Resolution Honoring the Life and Legacy of Harold Kenneth “H.K.” Edgerton

WHEREAS, Harold Kenneth “H.K.” Edgerton, born February 18, 1948, in Asheville, North Carolina, and who departed this life on January 18, 2026, was a loyal son of the South, a veteran of the United States Army, a community leader, past president of the Ashville Branch of the NAACP, and who pursued a life marked by devotion and service to his community and his Southern family; and

WHEREAS, Brother Edgerton possessed a warrior’s spirit coupled with a servant’s heart, tirelessly defending Confederate heroes of all races and creeds; by acting as a steadfast shield for students persecuted for honoring their Southern heritage; and, while navigating controversy with unfailing warmth, dignity, and a profound sense of brotherhood earned respect and affection of compatriots and citizens throughout the South and across the globe; and

WHEREAS, through his unwavering loyalty, dedicated educational outreach, and iconic marches—most notably the March Across Dixie—Brother Edgerton served as a living embodiment of the Charge of Lieutenant General Stephen Dill Lee, profoundly honoring the duty to remember, vindicate, and defend the cause for which Confederate soldiers contended; and

WHEREAS, Brother Edgerton was a member of several Camps of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in various states and supported those Camps through his dedicated efforts, participating in public events including parades, fairs, re-enactments, and other activities;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Sons of Confederate Veterans, assembled in National Reunion in Lexington, Kentucky, does hereby honor and remember Harold Kenneth “H.K.” Edgerton; and be it further

On July 9, 2015, Nikki Haley signed the bill to remove the Southern Cross from its place of honor on the Soldiers Monument on the Capitol grounds, after all previous agreements had been violated. South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham applauded it. Now 9 years later, he is gone. Mr. Edgerton’s description of the event below.

Black History Month 2020

Dear Ms. Lunelle,

As many Americans celebrate the month of February as Black History Month, I am constantly reminded of the words of Willie McCoy, a black man who came out to meet, greet, and provide us with a wealth of information as we made our way on the "Historic March Across Dixie" down the State designated “Civil Rights Highway” (Highway 80) in Lowens County, Alabama that Dr. Martin Luther King and his entourage traveled from Selma to Montgomery, and now I would trod from Montgomery to Selma.

This man, Mr. McCoy, would say pointing to me; "is standing up for dry bones". For those courageous men, and arguably women who earned a place of honor in the South, before, during, and after the War Between the States. (See the March Aaross Dixie Pictorial Journal and the DVD documentary of this historic journey, authored by Terry Lee Edgerton).

Names of noble men, (Holt Collier, Rev. Mack Lee, Horace King, Dr. Alexander Darnes, Polk Arnold, Napoleon Nelson, Christopher Columbus Quarrels, John F. Harris, Nathan Best, Robert J. Emerson, Ed Thomas, Anthony T. Welters, Levi Carmine, Dick Poplar, George Mills, and Louis Middleton (ironically the Black Confederate soldier buried on the grounds of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church where Dylan Roof committed his carnage).

The remarkable contributions they made in the service of the Confederate Armed Services, and to the society in which they lived will not be mentioned by the likes of Kevin Levin and his co-conspirators whose sole purpose in life is to disprove their existence. In fact, their mere existence proves everyday that he is in a state of being without knowledge, and profits on the deliverance of hate. Providing facts to him is like giving food to a dead man.

This month, God willing, I shall don the uniform of the Southern soldier, and post the Southern Cross at the entrance of many schools, highways and bi- ways and tell the many who will come on behalf of the two and one half Southern Bonds men, Bonds women, Freed men, Freed women who from 1861 to 1865 loyally served and supported the Confederate Cause in however humble and noble capacity.

Most importantly, I will tell them about the Bonds of love and affection between black and white that transcended the institution of slavery, and is so incomprehensible to people from the North. And, how they worked so hard to divide and separate Southern blacks and Southern whites.

I will tell them how the Northern Press descended upon the Capitol in Columbia after a crazed and doped up Dylan Roof killed nine black Parishioners as they opened their arms to invite him to celebrate the life of Jesus Christ and his teachings.

Kevin Levin, the leading “Black-Confederate Denier,” mocked not only Dr. Bradley’s poem but also Mr. Edgerton’s performances of it. But that didn’t stop Mr. Edgerton from performing it at every opportunity.

And much praise for initiating the Bradenton, Florida Poll that clearly shows that many decent Black folks in Manatee County don’t buy into the contumelious actions of Charles B. Smith, a Manatee County Commissioner who gives new meaning to conflict of interest, and who, in my opinion, does not deserve to take his seat at the table with his peers as a Commissioner.

Dear Ms. Lunelle,

Approximately 10 years ago the students at Western Carolina Community College would invite Morris Dees, CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center, to a function as their guest speaker. Personally, I would have paid him no nevermind had he not called the Sons of Confederate Veterans a hate group.

On the day of that speech, I would don the uniform of the Southern Soldier just outside the Town of Sylva, North Carolina and make my way on foot some 4 miles to Western Carolina College. Stopping only on occasion to answer the many who would enquire as to where I was marching?

“To confront the Devil's Minion” would be my reply.

Upon arriving I would take the seat at the very front by the stage that the Honorable Camp Commander Mike Parrish of the Jackson Rangers # 1917 had saved for me.

Dees would begin by stating he had seen what he thought was a Black man don in the Confederate soldiers uniform heading this way.

I stood up and replied:

“It was I Mr. Dees, and since I have your attention I came here to ask of you why you and your organization call the Sons of Confederate Veterans a 501(c)3 non-profit Heritage Organization a hate group?

And being a ‘so-called’ Law Center why do you persist in calling the people of the former Southern Confederacy Insurrectionist and Traitors with no proof of that in a Court of Law?”

Dees would have the nerve and audacity to ask me to go behind closed doors later and take up my question in private.

“I will not, you made claim in front of all these students, their families and friends.”

The young Black woman who had introduced him in such glowing terms interrupted...”Yes Mr. Dees, why want you answer Mr. Edgerton's question out here in the open for all to hear?”

“I have prepared a Speech and don't want to deviate from it” was his reply. “This man has taken up enough of my time.”

“Never mind young lady,” I would interrupt; “if I leave here now,” I said looking at my watch, “I can make it back to Asheville in time to watch Star Trek.”

2016 marked an escalation in the attacks on the South as those who orchestrated those attacks (NAACP, Southern Poverty Law Center) continue to expectorate their false narrative for the causes, and reasons for the War for Southern Independence.

Lee surrendered his army to at Appomattox Courthouse, that the African people would continue on the path of social vertical mobility that Southern Whites had set in motion for them in lieu of the worldwide economic institution of slavery.

As my little brother and I sat poolside at the estate home of Mr. Dewey and Mrs. Sissy Barber, owners of the foremost purveyors of Southern apparel, “Dixie Outfitters’; we could not help but to be overcome at the irony of our visit here. The Barbers had opened up their beautiful coastal home on this Easter weekend to Terry Lee and I, and the three young black boys who were accompanying us to Cross City, Florida at the invitation of the Dixie Defenders Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, where they would perform on African Drums a song composed by Terry Lee in honor of the SCV.
