It was still coffee-in-hand early when I opened Facebook and scrolled by a feline kidney support group thread that was growing exponentially by the minute. Scared cat people. Hopeful cat people. People who were just trying to help. All of them going for each other’s throats over what actually causes CKD.

I told myself I’d just skim it. I did not just skim it.

I sat down on the couch and read for probably twenty minutes longer than I meant to. At first there was a little spark in it. People in that thread pushing back on the automatic response to CKD, the prescription kidney food handed over like it’s the only option that exists, people asking about raw diets, about species appropriate feeding, about why nobody starts with hydration first. That’s the thread I’ve wanted to see for almost 8 years. That’s the thread I’ve built my entire life around trying to help exist.

Then it turned on me. I said something true, something I’ve lived and researched and rebuilt my whole world around, and within a few replies I was being told I didn’t know what I was talking about, by people who seemed completely closed off to the possibility that healing could exist outside the conventional veterinary model. That specific whiplash, excited to attacked, in the span of a few minutes, is a feeling I know well now. My stomach did the thing it does when I’m being attacked. The same tightening I get when I think I’ve done something wrong, when I feel like I’m in trouble, even when I know I haven’t and I’m not. Eight years of learning, studying, questioning, and immersing myself in root-cause healing, feline biology, nutrition, and holistic cat care doesn’t stop that feeling from showing up first, before anything logical gets a say.

I hadn’t said anything radical. I’d offered a perspective that’s contrary to the norm but not contrary to what actually works. The kind of thing I’ve watched play out in my own home. That was enough. Someone put words in my mouth that I never said. Someone tore apart research I’d shared and gave nothing back except a laughing emoji. Not one thing constructive. Just wrong, wrong, wrong, in a dozen different voices, and underneath all of it, tons of strangers stacking their fear on top of each other, one reply at a time. None of them realizing they were doing to each other exactly what this disease does to a cat’s body. Compensating for what isn’t working. Meeting fear with anger and uncertainty with attacks, until there’s no room left for questions, curiosity, or the possibility of learning anything new.

I kept closing my phone and opening it again, checking for replies like some part of me wanted the fight to keep going. I was angry. Triggered. I’d been trying to meet people with some kind of compassion and grace and getting nothing back but hostility and a lot of words that didn’t actually say anything. And somewhere in that loop of closing and opening, closing and opening, it hit me.

Nobody in that thread was the villain. They were all just scared in different ways.

Some of them gripping control so tight their knuckles were white. Some throwing their hands up in surrender, telling themselves it’s just genetics, there’s nothing to be done, because that felt safer than trying and being wrong. Some just begging somebody, anybody, to hand them the one thing they could do to keep their cat from getting this wretched disease.

I sat with that longer than felt comfortable, because I recognized every single one of them in myself at some point over the last few years. The one insisting diet is everything is scared she missed something and thinks she can control everything. The one insisting it’s all genetic is scared of being blamed for something she couldn’t control. The one begging for a checklist doesn’t trust herself yet, and who could blame her, in a comment section like that one and so much conflicting information out there.

I have two cats living with CKD right now. Joey and Jacky, both managed holistically, both here, both thriving. Maybe that’s why I couldn’t close the app the way someone with nothing at stake could have. I wasn’t just watching a thread fall apart. I was watching a bunch of different versions of a fear I already know, intimately.

What settled in me wasn’t an answer, and it definitely wasn’t anything I could have typed into that comment section without it getting torn apart too.

Some of this was never going to be mine to control. Genetics. Timing. A body doing what bodies do no matter how many things I got right. But some of it was mine. Is mine. The food. The water. The paying attention. The constant learning and growing. And I think that’s the part nobody in that thread could say out loud, because saying it means living in the middle instead of picking a side. Gripping tight enough to believe I can prevent everything is easier than the middle. So is letting go completely and calling it genetics. The middle doesn’t come with certainty. It just comes with the actual work, and no promise of what it buys you. You could do everything “right” and your cat could still get CKD. That’s fucking scary.

I closed that thread feeling indicted and dismissed in the same breath, which I don’t think is a coincidence. Nobody in it, on any side, not one of them, was a person who didn’t love her cat. That was never actually what they were fighting about.

Which one are you right now. The one gripping. The one who’s already surrendered because it hurts less. Or the one still waiting for somebody to just tell you what to do.

If you’ve ever stood in front of a cabinet full of bottles wondering what half of them are still doing there, this is for you.

A probiotic for the gut. Omega-3s for inflammation. A liver formula to support detoxification. Digestive enzymes because your cat eats raw. Colostrum for immune support after a rough season. These are all legitimate reasons to reach for a supplement, and I’d recommend most of them myself…for the right cat, at the right time.

The problem isn’t the supplements. It’s what happens when you start giving four or five of them in the same week, without a plan for evaluating any of them individually. You start everything at once, something changes a few days later, and suddenly you’re trying to troubleshoot five variables with no way of knowing which one made the difference and which one caused the problem.

That’s not a supplement problem. It’s a sequencing problem.

And that’s what I want to fix here: giving you a simple way to introduce the supplements that make sense for your cat, track what happens, and actually know what’s working.

First: Supplements Are the Icing, Not the Cake

I say this as someone who has spent real money and found out the hard way: a supplement cannot fix a foundation that isn’t right. Food, hydration, vet care, a calm environment. That’s the cake. Supplements are icing.

If your cat already eats a complete, species-appropriate diet, piling more vitamins and minerals on top doesn’t automatically make it helpful or “healthy”. Some of them get dangerous in excess, not helpful…dangerous.

And if the foundation is off, fix the foundation. Don’t try to cover it with another capsule.

This isn’t to say supplements are pointless. I use them. I trust them when there’s a good reason, for the right cat, at the right time.

It just means I stopped asking, “What should every cat be taking?” a long time ago. That’s the wrong question.

The question I ask now is much smaller, and much more useful:

“Does this cat have a real reason for this supplement, right now?”

Once I have this answer, I can move onto the next step.

Before You Start: When to Loop Your Vet In

This protocol is designed to help you make more thoughtful decisions, not replace disease-specific veterinary care. The more medically complex your cat is, the less this becomes a “figure it out yourself” situation and the more it becomes “loop your vet in before you start.”

Talk to your vet first if your cat:

• has kidney, liver, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, or endocrine disease

• takes prescription medications

• is undergoing cancer treatment

• has a history of adverse reactions

• is pregnant or nursing

• is a kitten with specialized nutritional requirements

• is eating a therapeutic veterinary diet

• has significant appetite loss, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or another unexplained symptom

I want to be really clear about something, because I see this mistake constantly: herbs and supplements aren’t automatically safe just because they came from a plant instead of a lab.

They can have real pharmacologic effects, the same way a medication does. Nutrients that are perfectly fine at normal amounts can become harmful at high ones. Supplements can interact with medications your cat is already on. And sometimes a supplement doesn’t cause a problem, it just makes an existing one harder to read, muddying the exact symptom you’re trying to track.

I’m not telling you this to scare you. I’m telling you because the more complex your cat’s health is, the less room there is for guessing. A healthy cat can absorb a little trial and error. A cat managing kidney disease, or on medication, or recovering from something serious, can’t always afford that same margin of error. In those cases, every addition deserves to be a decision you made on purpose, with your vet in the loop, not something you tried because it sounded promising.

The Conversation To Have With Your Vet

You don’t need to walk in and ask permission. “Can my cat take this” is a yes-or-no question, and it puts your vet in the position of either rubber-stamping something they haven’t actually looked at or shutting you down without a real reason. Neither one helps you.

Give them context instead. Something like:

“I’m considering [supplement] because I’m trying to support [specific goal]. Right now my cat is on [medications/supplements]. I’m planning to introduce it on its own, starting low, and I’ll be watching [specific things] over the next week or two. Is there anything in her bloodwork, her current meds, or her diet that would make this a bad idea? And is there anything specific you’d want me to keep an eye on?”

That’s a completely different conversation. You’re not asking for a yes or no. You’re handing them something they can actually evaluate, which makes it a lot harder for them to wave you off with “should be fine” and a lot easier for them to catch something real, like an interaction with a medication, a kidney value that changes how a supplement should be dosed, a reason this particular product isn’t a fit for this particular cat.

You’re not trying to get your vet’s blessing. You’re trying to make sure nothing you’re doing at home works against what they’re doing in the vet clinic. Those are different goals, and the second one is the one that actually helps your cat.

Six steps. I use this exact sequence every time, no matter which cat or which supplement. The point of the protocol is to make it possible to tell what you’re actually doing, why you’re doing it, and whether it’s helping.

A few weeks ago, a subscriber wrote to me about her cat’s CKD experience. Daily fluids. A fight to get her eating. Anticipatory grief she couldn’t stop ruminating about, not even for an afternoon. She asked me how I regulate myself through something like that.

A subscriber wrote in a few weeks ago asking what herbs to give her cat after a fresh cancer diagnosis.

I can assume she’s not short on information. She’s most likely drowning in it. Every account she’s found has a different plant that’s supposedly the answer, and none of them agree, and she’s trying to make a decision with a browser full of contradictions and no way to tell which sources are backed by anything real.

Herbs are only one piece of a much bigger, better-researched picture.

It’s Bigger Than Herbs

Search “herbs for cat cancer” and you get the same three plants recycled across a dozen blog posts, usually with no sourcing and no acknowledgment of what’s actually known versus hoped.

The Foundation: What You Feed Matters

Cancer cells preferentially run on glucose. That’s basic tumor metabolism, not folk wisdom. It’s part of why some integrative vets look at lower-carbohydrate, higher-fat feeding during cancer support.

Before anything else, the baseline has to be right. Cats are obligate carnivores. They weren’t built to run on carbohydrate and kibble. Dry, high-carb, loaded with fillers, cooked at high heat is the opposite of what a cancer-stressed body needs. If your cat is still eating kibble, this is the moment to move off it. Species-appropriate, moisture-rich, low-carb food isn’t an upgrade here. It’s the absolute necessity.

A few things to know before you touch your cat’s food:

• This is individualized. Tumor location and type change the ratio that makes sense. This gets built with a holistic vet or feline nutritionist reading your cat’s specific diagnosis, not lifted from a blog recipe.

• Fat quality matters more than fat source. Rancid or heat-damaged fat causes its own problems. Fresh, unoxidized fat is the baseline, whatever form it comes in.

Omega-3s: The One Not to Skip

In everything I’ve researched, omega-3s help more conditions than any other single supplement. Cancer included.

Here’s why: chronic inflammation drives cancer progression. Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory, and they support immune and nervous system function at the same time. That’s not a small thing when a cat’s whole system is under siege.

One detail that trips people up…flax and other plant-based sources don’t work well here! Cats convert plant ALA into usable EPA and DHA poorly. Fish or krill oil gets there directly. Flax is a human strategy that doesn’t translate to feline biology, no matter how often it shows up in “natural” pet content.

As a general reference point, integrative vets commonly cite somewhere around 1,000mg of fish oil (roughly 300mg combined EPA/DHA) or 500mg of krill oil per 10 pounds of body weight, daily. That’s a starting figure, not a prescription. Confirm the right amount for your cat with your vet before you start, especially if your cat is already in active treatment, where interactions and dosing precision matter more than usual.

Herbs: Curcumin, Milk Thistle, Echinacea, and Dandelion Root

Curcumin has the deepest research base of anything on this list. It has anti-inflammatory effects, slows tumor growth in some studies, and offers better chemo tolerance in others.

Sprinkling turmeric from your spice rack onto food does almost nothing. Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, so most of it passes through without reaching the tissue that needs it. Fat helps it absorb better. The simplest way to use that: give a curcumin supplement with a meal, mixed with a small amount of fish oil or coconut oil to help with absorption.

Some research suggests curcumin may ease chemo side effects. Promising, but “may help with side effects” isn’t the same as “won’t interfere with this specific drug.” Bring it to your vet before adding it during active treatment.

Milk thistle supports the liver, which matters here because the liver is processing both the cancer itself and, if your cat is on chemo, the drugs treating it. It’s one of the more established herbs for that specific role.

Echinacea is short-term immune support, built for acute stimulation, not daily use. Continuous echinacea in a cat already undergoing cancer treatment isn’t how this herb was designed to work. More immune stimulation isn’t automatically better when the immune system is already under strain. This one’s a vet conversation, not a default add.

Dandelion root is the one that surprises people. Researchers at the University of Windsor found that dandelion root extract triggered cancer cells to self-destruct in the lab (leukemia, colon, and pancreatic cancer cells specifically), while leaving healthy cells alone. That selectivity is the part that got scientists’ attention. Most things that kill cancer cells in a dish kill healthy cells too. This didn’t. The lab work has been going on for over a decade, and it’s moved from petri dishes into small early-phase human trials.

There’s no dandelion root trial in cats, and even the human research is still early. It’s promising but not necessarily a proven treatment.

Vitamin C

You’ve probably seen vitamin C on more than one list like this. It shows up constantly in integrative cancer support: general immune backing, antioxidant support, the kind of thing that sounds safe and obviously good.

Here’s what most of those lists don’t tell you: your cat already makes her own vitamin C. He or she doesn’t need it from food or a supplement the way you do. So before you add one more thing to the pile, it’s worth understanding what you’d actually be doing.

The real question isn’t “is my cat deficient.“ It’s whether his or her body can keep making enough on its own while it’s under this much strain. Cancer is hard on a body. Chemo, if they’re on it, adds more. It’s reasonable to wonder if her own production is keeping pace, or falling behind.

If your holistic vet agrees it’s worth adding, look for a liposomal form. It absorbs better and tends to be gentler on the stomach than the standard kind, which matters when their gut is already dealing with enough.

Medicinal Mushrooms

Of everything on this list, mushrooms have some of the strongest research behind them. They also have some of the worst quality control in the entire pet supplement industry. Both things are true, and you need to know both before you buy anything.

Four are worth knowing:

• Turkey tail — the most studied for cancer support specifically. Immune defense, better quality of life in cancer patients.

• Reishi — immune modulation, general longevity support.

• Chaga — antioxidant, anti-inflammatory.

• Lion’s mane — neurological support. This one’s more about overall resilience than cancer directly.

Some integrative practitioners pair turkey tail with chaga specifically for cancer support. I’m telling you that so you understand how these get used in practice, not so you go mix them yourself. It’s a decision between yourself and your vet.

Mushroom supplements are measured by beta-glucan content. That’s the compound doing the actual work. But there’s no flat “give this much” number, because beta-glucan content isn’t standardized across brands. It depends entirely on extraction method. A lot of mushroom supplements on the market are mostly starch and filler, with barely any active compound in them at all. The label can say “mushroom powder” and still be telling you almost nothing about what’s actually inside the capsule.

This is the same problem I bring up with every product category on this brand. Labeled is not the same as verified. Before you buy a mushroom supplement, look for one that’s third-party tested and specifies its beta-glucan percentage. If a brand can’t tell you that number, they probably don’t know it either.

Others…

Cannabinoids get their own honest breakdown, because the research is real and promising.

CBD and THC have shown anti-proliferative and anti-metastatic effects, meaning they’ve slowed or stopped cancer cell growth in cell-culture and animal-model studies. That’s genuinely worth knowing about. But “killed cancer cells in a lab dish” and “will shrink your cat’s tumor” are two very different claims, so you should just be aware of it. Cannabinoid research in cats specifically is still thin, and cats are more sensitive to THC than dogs or humans, which makes dosing a real concern.

What actually has solid support is CBD’s role in appetite, pain, and inflammation during cancer treatment. If your cat is struggling to eat or seems uncomfortable, that’s the honest, evidence-backed reason to bring CBD up with your vet. Not the anti-tumor claim. The appetite and comfort support is how I’d use it with my cats if I were in this position. Let that be the reason, not the hope of a cure.

Traditional Chinese Vet Medicine (TCVM)

TCVM herbal formulas aren’t chosen by disease name. They’re chosen based on your specific cat; their pattern, constitution, and where his or her body is right now. This is not something you piece together from an article. It requires a certified TCVM practitioner who has actually examined your cat.

A few named formulas, so you at least know what exists and what to ask about:

• Wei Qi Booster — tonifies Qi and Blood. Typically used for cats who are debilitated or deficient.

• Stasis Breaker — stronger, built for cats with more robust constitutions and a more aggressive presentation.

• Si Jun Zi Tang — supports digestive Qi function. Studied for slowing tumor growth and reducing chemo toxicity.

Two cats can have the exact same diagnosis and need completely different formulas. One is older and depleted. One is younger with a strong pulse and more reserve. Same cancer, same stage, different bodies, different treatment. That’s the entire reason TCVM isn’t a DIY category, and it’s not me being overly cautious. It’s how this medicine actually works.

Acupuncture belongs in this same conversation. It’s used alongside herbal formulas for pain and inflammation in cancer patients, not as treatment for the cancer itself. Same rule applies: this is performed by a certified veterinary acupuncturist, not something to try at home. The value here is real, and it’s specifically about your cat’s comfort and quality of life during treatment. Not the tumor.

What the Research Actually Shows (and Doesn’t)

Most accounts pushing these compounds skip the one distinction that actually matters: what kind of study you’re looking at.

A lot of this research is preclinical. That means mouse studies, or cells in a petri dish, not actual cats going through actual treatment. Preclinical isn’t worthless. It’s often where real discoveries start. But it’s a different category of evidence than a clinical trial in cats, and that category is a lot thinner than most people realize.

Here’s where the compounds on this list actually stand:

Curcumin has real, reasonably substantial research behind it. Tumor growth inhibition, reduced chemo side effects. This is one of the stronger evidence bases on this whole list. Giordano & Tommonaro, 2019, Curcumin and Cancer, Nutrients.

Artemisinin showed a meaningful jump in cancer cell reduction when combined with pressurized oxygen, in a study on leukemia cells in a lab dish. Not a cat. Ohgami et al., 2010, Anticancer Research; foundational work in Lai, Sasaki & Singh, 2005, Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets.

Fenbendazole — the antiparasitic drug people are repurposing off-label, showed tumor growth inhibition when paired with supplemental vitamins. Again, a lab study. Not a clinical trial in cats. Gao, Dang & Watson, 2008, JAALAS.

Si Jun Zi Tang, a TCVM formula covered in the next section, actually has the most feline-adjacent evidence on this whole list. Several studies on bladder tumor growth, antioxidant effects, and chemo toxicity reduction, specifically in mice. Li, Li & Shu, 2004; Li, Shu & Li, 2003; Li, Li & Shu, 2005.

Saying “studies show” without saying which kind of study is how false hope gets sold on this exact topic, over and over. I’m not going to do that to you.

Where to Start

Given everything above, here’s the single most defensible starting point: omega-3s, plus a direct conversation with your vet about curcumin. Those two carry the broadest support and the lowest interaction risk of anything on this list.

The practical next move isn’t adding supplements at home without your vet knowing. It’s bringing this list to your next vet appointment and asking which pieces fit your cat’s specific treatment plan. Watch for steady appetite, no worsening GI symptoms, and confirmation from your vet that nothing conflicts with the current treatment.

You’re not the guardian who grabs whatever a wellness account promised this week. You’re the one who brings a researched list to the appointment instead of a hunch.

You may have an essential oil bottle somewhere in your house right now. Maybe you bought it. Maybe someone gave it to you. The label says safe. The label says natural. You have never once questioned that.

You should. Not because essential oils are dangerous by nature. Because “natural” is a word a bottle gets to use without anyone checking if it’s true. Nobody tested it. Nobody verified the label matches what’s actually inside. You’ve been trusting a claim, not a fact, and you didn’t know there was a difference.

Over the last 5+ years, I’ve spent hundreds of hours going through everything written about essential oils and cats. I expected to find bad diffusing advice (oregano, tea tree, citrus, the stuff that circulates in comment sections from people who don’t understand a cat’s liver). That advice exists. But it wasn’t the real problem. The real problem is that almost nobody, me included a few years back, knows how to tell a genuinely pure essential oil from a bottle that’s only pretending to be one.

The Same Failure, Just With Better Branding

I already lived this once, on the other side of the aisle.

Veda wore a Seresto collar for months. It went through EPA review before it ever reached a shelf. That review wasn’t nothing, yet it wasn’t enough. More than 100,000 incident reports and over 2,500 pet deaths were eventually filed with the EPA connected to that collar. A 2024 federal watchdog report went further, describing serious lapses in the agency’s own scientific oversight of the product. Elanco, the company that now owns the collar, settled a class action lawsuit for $15 million over the injuries and deaths tied to it.

Veda’s neck burned. Raw, red, weeping. The box said safe. A regulatory process existed behind that word. It just wasn’t rigorous enough to catch what it should have caught before her skin did.

That’s not the same story as your essential oil bottle. It’s a different flavor of the same problem. With the collar, a checking process existed and failed. With most essential oils, the checking is optional, and most companies skip it. There’s no agency that has to sign off on the word “pure” before it goes on a bottle. There are real standards a company could meet if they wanted to be held to something. Most just don’t bother, because nothing makes them.

This is where both sides of the conversation get it wrong.

The mainstream take is “essential oils are toxic to cats,” full stop, no nuance, end of discussion. That’s not true, and it’s not useful. Some oils are genuinely dangerous for cats at any concentration. Others are fine and even helpful at the right dilution from the right source. Treating “essential oil” as one blanket category is exactly the kind of oversimplification that makes people stop listening (and stop thinking critically).

The natural-wellness take swings the other way: essential oil = natural = safe. Also not true. The oil itself was never the whole issue. The real variables are which oil, how pure, sourced from where, how diluted, and whether any of that has been verified. Not whether the words “essential oil” appear on the bottle.

Why Purity Matters So Much

This matters more for cats specifically than for dogs, people, or the internet in general.

Cats have a limited version of a liver enzyme pathway called glucuronidation. It’s how most mammals break down and clear phenolic compounds (the chemical family found in a lot of plant oils, including relatively safe ones like lavender). Without that pathway, a cat’s body can’t process those compounds the way yours or a dog’s can.

That vulnerability changes what actually matters. Even a pure, correctly diluted oil is extra work for a liver that already has one less way to process it. A fake or cut oil asks that same liver to process something it can’t predict at all.

Fake, Cut, and Fragrance Oil: What the Words Actually Mean

“Fake” usually means the bottle contains a different, cheaper plant than the one on the label. Lavandin, a hardier and cheaper-to-grow relative of lavender, gets sold as lavender constantly. It smells close enough that most people can’t tell the difference. But it’s not the same plant, and it doesn’t behave the same way once it’s in a cat’s body.

“Cut” means the essential oil has been stretched with something else like a cheap carrier oil, a synthetic version of one of the oil’s natural compounds, or sometimes both. So the bottle contains less of the real thing than the label implies. A bottle can be 20% true lavender and 80% filler and still legally say “lavender essential oil” on the front, because nothing requires the company to disclose the ratio.

And then there’s the one people don’t even think to check for: fragrance oil pretending to be essential oil. A fragrance oil, sometimes called “perfume oil” or “aroma oil”, isn’t a plant extract at all (or only partly one). It’s a blend of aroma chemicals, often synthetic, engineered to smell like lavender or eucalyptus or whatever’s on the label. Some fragrance oils do contain real essential oil mixed in. Most contain little or none. You cannot tell which one you’re holding by smell alone. These show up constantly in candles, diffuser blends, and cheap “aromatherapy” products, and the word “oil” on the front is SO misleading.

Here’s why most of the time, you won’t catch any of it yourself:

• Smell won’t tell you, because synthetic isolates and fragrance oils are often built specifically to smell like the real compound, sometimes more intensely “true to type” than the actual plant extract is. A stronger, cleaner smell doesn’t mean more real. It can actually mean the opposite. REAL essential oils vary batch to batch because they come from a plant. A scent that smells identical every single time is a signal that it’s synthetic, not a signal it’s pure and real.

• Price won’t tell you on its own, though it’s a clue. Genuinely pure oils are expensive to make. Sourcing the plant material, the distillation, and testing all cost money, so an oil priced far below everything else in its category is worth a second look. But price isn’t proof either way. Adulteration and fragrance substitution happen at the supplier level, before a brand even bottles it. An expensive company can unknowingly be selling a cut product. A cheap one occasionally isn’t.

• The label won’t tell you, because nobody’s forcing the difference to be obvious. “100% natural essential oil” and “fragrance oil” can sit right next to each other on a shelf, worded almost identically, same clean font, same leaf on the front. Nothing requires a company to make that distinction easy to spot. You have to read the actual ingredient list, not the front of the bottle, to find out which one you’re holding. Most people never do.

That’s the REAL problem. Not “all essential oils are toxic.“ You have no reliable way to confirm what’s in the bottle without a 3rd party lab test, almost nobody’s asking for one, and most people don’t even know to ask for it.

Is There Actually a Grading System? (No, But There Are Standards)

You’ve probably seen essential oils sorted into “grades” online: Therapeutic Grade, Grade A, Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade, Medical Grade. It sounds official…but it isn’t. Again, it’s just marketing copy designed to trick you into paying a higher price without proving anything about what’s actually in the bottle.

No government agency, and no single global authority, grades essential oils. “Therapeutic grade” isn’t a certification anyone has to earn. In one well-known case, “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade” is a phrase trademarked by a single company, meaning no competitor could use it even if their oil met an identical standard. It’s a marketing term with a trademark symbol, not a quality benchmark!

The FDA doesn’t grade essential oils either. Some oils, like peppermint, appear on the FDA’s “Generally Recognized as Safe” list, but that only means the substance is considered safe as a flavoring agent in food, in tiny amounts. It says nothing about purity, and nothing about whether a specific bottle on a shelf actually contains what it claims.

But real standards do exist. However, they’re just optional, and most brands don’t bother.

• ISO standards (set by the International Organization for Standardization) define what characteristics and chemical specifications an oil actually has to meet to be called a genuine, unadulterated essential oil of a given species. A company can test against these standards. Most don’t advertise whether they do. The good ones will, and make it prominent and transparent.

• Certified organic is a real, regulated designation. Unlike “therapeutic grade,” it requires third-party certification (bodies like USDA Organic in the U.S., ACO in Australia, or EU Organic (Regulation 2018/848)) confirming the plants were grown without pesticides and the extraction process met organic standards.

• Fragrance oils fall under a different framework entirely. They’re usually a blend of synthetic aroma chemicals built to mimic a scent (lavender, eucalyptus, whatever’s on the label). Some do contain a real essential oil mixed in somewhere in that blend. Most don’t, or only in a trace amount that does nothing. You cannot tell the difference by smell, because that’s the entire point of a fragrance oil: to smell like the real thing regardless of what’s actually in it. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) sets safety limits for the aroma chemicals used in these products (how concentrated they’re allowed to be in a finished item like a candle or a diffuser blend). IFRA compliance means the chemicals fall within a safe concentration for that product type. It says nothing about whether the bottle is honestly labeled “essential oil” instead of what it actually is. A product can be fully IFRA-compliant and still be mislabeled as something it’s not.

So the honest version is this: there’s no system forcing a bottle to prove it’s pure. There is a system for proving it, if a company chooses to use it and show you the results.

And that’s exactly what makes this so hard to navigate as the person buying the bottle. The standards that actually mean something (ISO, organic certification, IFRA) are technical, optional, and buried in paperwork most companies never show you. The words that sound like standards (therapeutic grade, medical grade, 100% pure) mean nothing and cost a company nothing to print. You’re left comparing a real certification you can’t easily verify against a fake one that looks identical on the shelf. No wonder almost nobody catches the difference. You were never given the tools to.

So What Should You Actually Check For?

Don’t vet an oil by reading the front label. That’s marketing copy. Check for this instead:

• A named, batch-specific GC/MS report. Not a general certificate that applies to the brand as a whole. A test tied to that specific bottle’s batch number. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry is what actually verifies chemical composition. If a company can’t hand you one for the exact batch you’re buying, they haven’t proven anything.

• Third-party testing, not testing the company did on itself. A brand telling you their own lab checked their own oil isn’t verification. It’s a company grading its own homework. Ask who ran the test, and whether that lab has any relationship to the company selling you the bottle.

• The botanical Latin name, not just the common name. Lavandula angustifolia, not just “lavender.” That’s what confirms the species. Species substitution (lavandin sold as lavender) is one of the most common swaps in the industry, and it never shows up if you’re only reading the common name.

• Country of origin and growing conditions. Where the plant was grown, and how (organically, with pesticides, wild-harvested, etc.). This affects what actually ends up in the oil, and it’s information a transparent company will volunteer without you asking twice.

• Distillation method. How the plant was processed into oil. Steam distilled, cold pressed, solvent extracted, these methods change the chemical makeup of the final product. A company that knows their own process well enough to explain it to you is a company that’s actually paying attention to it.

• Verifiable facility certifications. Not just a claim of certification, something you can look up independently and confirm is real and current, tied to that specific facility.

• A complete traceability system. The ability to follow the oil backward from the bottle in your hand to the specific farm and batch it came from. If a company can’t trace it that far back, they’re trusting their own supply chain on faith, same as you’d be trusting them.

• Watch the language on the bottle itself. “Fragrance oil” or “aromatherapy oil” on a label can be a clear signal you’re looking at a synthetic or lower-grade product, even when the bottle is sitting on a shelf next to genuine essential oils and priced similarly.

The pattern across all of this is the same: look for evidence, not adjectives. A company confident in what’s actually in the bottle will hand you batch-specific test reports, named third-party labs, sourcing and growing detail, distillation method, and real facility certification, all without you having to ask twice. If a brand can’t produce any of that, or gets vague when you push, that’s your answer. Steer clear.

The One Thing to Do Today

Of everything on that list above, 2 things get you the most information for the least effort. Start there.

Pick one essential oil you already own. Just one. Go find the bottle.

Look at the label. Is there a botanical Latin name on it, or just “lavender”? Is there a batch number anywhere? Then go to the company’s website and look for one thing: a GC/MS report, or any mention of third-party testing.

If it’s there, you’re in good shape. If it’s not there, or the site says “therapeutic grade” and nothing else, send the company one email: “Can you share the GC/MS report for this batch?” That’s it. That’s your homework.

A company with nothing to hide sends you a report, or points you to where it’s already posted. A company that gets vague, stalls, or never responds has told you what you needed to know without saying it directly. Steer clear.

The rest of the checklist (sourcing, distillation, traceability, facility certification) matters, and it’s worth building into a habit over time. But the Latin name and the lab report are where you start, because they’re the fastest way to find out if a company has anything real behind their claims at all.

What This Doesn’t Mean

I’m not telling you to throw out everything on your shelf or panic about a bottle that’s been sitting there for two years doing nothing.

And I’m not telling you to email a company and then take whatever they send back at face value either. A GC/MS report with no lab name on it isn’t proof. A “certification” you can’t independently look up isn’t proof. Companies know these words build trust now, which means some of them will start using the words without doing the work behind them. I don’t say this to scare you. That’s just what happens once people start asking questions. The answers get better at sounding right before they get better at actually being right.

This is the same instinct I’m asking you to build everywhere else in your cat’s life. Don’t trust “vet recommended” because a vet said it. Don’t trust “natural” because a label says it. Don’t trust a lab report because a company sent it to you unprompted, either. Check who’s behind it. Check if it’s actually verifiable, not just official-sounding. That’s the muscle we’re trying to build. Discernment. Not “who do I trust instead,” but “what actually holds up when I look closer.“

I know this is a lot. I’m asking you to question a label, then question the answer you get when you ask about the label, and keep going one layer past where most people stop. That’s not a small ask. It takes actual effort to be this diligent about something as small as a bottle of essential oil.

But this is what it looks like to be proactive instead of reactive. You’re not being paranoid by asking who checked this. You’re just refusing to let “sounds official” stand in for “someone actually checked.” That’s worth the work. It’s worth it for the oil in your diffuser, and it’s worth it for everything else you’re being asked to trust on your cat’s behalf.

Stop assuming every bottle with a green leaf on it is natural. Stop assuming a company that sells wellness products is automatically a wellness company. The marketing is designed to make you stop asking questions right at the moment you should be asking more of them. That’s not an accident. That’s the whole business model.

Everything in that house was still new. We’d just bought brand new furniture for the house and it still had that faint showroom smell. We’d left city-living after almost a decade and moved an hour out into the country, somewhere quiet enough that I lay there at 2am straining to hear a car, a siren, anything familiar (besides dogs barking), and hearing nothing. My friends were an hour away. The walls of this house didn’t know me yet. I didn’t know them either. And I was flat on my back with a cold that wouldn’t quit, in a bed that still felt like someone else’s.

Vinney didn’t skip a night. Four nights running, he found the same spot like he’d already mapped it the first time and didn’t need to search again. He’d land soft, no hesitation, and start kneading slow and deliberate, one paw and then the other, pressing down like he was working something loose. He’d knead for a minute, maybe two, and then just stop and lay there, full weight, paws still flat against me, like he’d finished doing whatever he came to do and now his job was just to stay. I already slept under a weighted blanket most nights, the kind that’s supposed to trick your nervous system into feeling held. Vinney just added himself on top of it, like he’d decided one layer wasn’t enough.

I’ve spent a long time being the one who notices things first (hello, hypervigilance as a trauma response 👋). A shift in someone’s tone before they say anything’s wrong. The way a person goes quiet in a room they’re usually loud in. A change in energy I can’t always name but can always feel. With cats, that instinct runs even deeper. I’m always scanning, always aware. I'm the one who shows up, even when I don't feel steady myself. Even sick. Especially sick. That's just been my role for years, the one I never questioned. I knew the importance of it and felt honored to hold the space.

So when Vinney started climbing up on my chest every single night that week, my first read was the obvious one. He’s cold. He likes the warmth of my body that’s probably running a fever. Cats do that.

But he wasn’t hunting for heat. He was focused when he jumped on the bed and knew exactly what he was meant for. And he was still when he landed. Deliberate. He’d knead for a minute, then stop, then just stay, paws pressed flat, like he was holding something down instead of warming himself up. His normal curl into a cute little ball didn’t happen. I'd always assumed I was the one doing the settling. That week, he settled me. It was then that I realized it went both ways. I honestly don’t know what took me so long…but that was the moment it finally really hit me and I got it.

I don’t think I’m the only person this has happened to. The cat who always finds your lap on the one night you needed it most. The one who shows up the second you finally go still enough to let him. Most of us call that sweet and leave it there, because it’s easier than asking what it actually means about the furry ones who love us. Vinney still climbs up like that sometimes, when the energy in the house gets too chaotic or I’m too tired to hold myself together. I don’t wave it off anymore. I let it be what it is. Sometimes I need to be held and so I let him. My protector, my warrior, my Vinney cat.

Five cats live in my house right now, and every one of them wears, eats, or gets rubbed with something a label swore was safe. Only one has a scar to prove what “safe“ actually meant (or didn’t mean, in her case).

It was an ordinary morning in Sayulita, Mexico. I was on the bed with Veda tucked beside me, running my fingers along her back, up toward the soft plastic of the Seresto collar I’d put on her the night before. The vet recommended it. The box said it was safe. She was scratching frantically. When I looked under the flea collar I saw raw, red skin, bleeding in areas, and a burn circling her neck in the exact shape of the collar. I ripped it off, threw it away, and held her while I cried. (And then obviously, got her to the vet).

I THOUGHT I was doing the responsible thing. I THOUGHT I was being a “good” cat guardian to her. I blindly trusted what was handed to me and what was on the box. That’s the distinction I kept coming back to. It was one of the moments in my cat care journey that had me start questioning the decisions I was making and the people I was listening to.

Afterward I went looking for how a “safe” product could burn my cat’s neck, and found Seresto is linked to more than 2,500 pet deaths and 100,000+ EPA incident reports, a 2024 watchdog report on the agency’s own oversight lapses, and a $15 million class action lawsuit against the manufacturer. The product is still on shelves. It’s still being widely recommended to pet parents.

I’m telling you this because I think a lot of you are standing exactly where I was that morning. You’re probably a relatively healthy person. You’re pretty intentional about doing what’s best for your cat. You buy what’s recommended by your vet. You trust the label. Probably buy the most expensive or healthy-looking products. And still, some part of you may sense that something isn’t right, even when you can’t prove it yet. This series is for that instinct.

It’s broken into a multi-part series, not a hundred-item list you’ll skim once and forget. Each one is a category you can (hopefully) actually finish. This one, part 1, walks you through exactly what products to check that go on your cat’s body. What goes on and in your cat’s skin is a place with the most direct route into your cat’s bloodstream. Below I’ll tell you what’s risky in those products, what to swap them for, and why. I’m going to try to make it straight forward and simple, so you can start making changes today instead of guessing. Part 2 is what goes in your cat (what they consume, eat, or digest). Part 3 is the air and the floor. Part 3 is the objects your cat uses every day. Part 4 is all about enrichment & the nervous system.

What “Safe” Actually Means

Here’s what that research turned up, and why it changed how I read every label since. Most pet product safety testing is built around one question: “would this kill a cat outright at a normal dose”. It was never built around what happens to a six-pound animal with a fast metabolism and thin, permeable skin when that same “safe” dose sits against her body for weeks at a time.

Here’s something you need to know, first. When your cat eats something, her gut and liver get first crack at it, breaking it down and filtering out some of what’s harmful before it ever reaches the rest of her body in force. Anything absorbed through skin, or anything injected, skips that step entirely and goes straight into the bloodstream, unprocessed. That’s true of a topical flea treatment sitting against her neck, and it’s true of a vaccine going into the muscle. Neither one gets the liver’s first pass at moderating it.

That’s why it’s so important to be even more careful with what touches her skin, and what gets injected into her, than what she eats. So here are the products and injections I’d check first, and what to reach for instead.

If you’re new here: Fifi is the feral cat who adopted us. He showed up in our neighborhood a year and a half ago, probably eight or nine years old, likely with little to no gentle human contact in his life before us. It took six months before he’d let me get close enough to touch him. Now he eats here twice a day, comes inside, snuggles with my five cats, sleeps on my lap, and lets me clean out wounds from the fights he still gets into with other ferals outside. He’s family. He also still has limits, and they move depending on the day.

We were on the grass that morning. Coffee, sun, my cats sprawled around us sunbathing, chewing grass, minding their own business. I called Fifi over, which he does now, easy, unbothered, like it’s just part of his day.

He doesn’t usually go to Lucas (my partner). That morning he did.

I have it on video, and watching it back, you can see the whole thing happen in real time. Lucas reached out and scratched the top of Fifi’s head. Fifi gave a swipe, quick, controlled, claws barely out. A warning, not an attack. Lucas didn’t catch it. He went back in for another scratch. Fifi’s ears pinned back and he swiped again, a little harder this time. Still not trying to hurt him. Just: back off, buddy.

I don’t say any of this to make Lucas sound careless, because he isn’t. He’s been with me 10+ years. He isn’t a cat person. Wasn’t, before me. Ten years in, he’s better. Genuinely better. He’s absorbed a lot just from being next to someone who’s spent her whole life translating what cats won’t say out loud. But absorbing isn’t the same as reading. He can tell you when a cat is obviously happy. What he still misses is the part before the obvious part. He still misses the ten seconds before a swipe, the ear shift, the stillness, the moment an invitation closes or boundaries are set.

After the second swipe, Fifi walked away from Lucas and came straight to me. And this is the part I don’t love admitting, and it would have been easier to leave it out (but also inauthentic). I reached for him right away, the same way Lucas did. I told myself the trust between us meant this exact moment was safe, that I could skip the read and go straight to contact. He does trust me, more than probably any human. But trusting me in general and being ready for a hand on him in that specific second are two different things, and I skipped the question that would have told me which one I was dealing with.

He settled with me faster than he did with Lucas. Within seconds he rubbed against my legs, let me scratch his back, flopped down in the grass in front of me, and gave a little meow. On the surface, it would’ve been easy to tell myself, “See? He trusts me.”

But that’s not actually what happened.

What happened is that his nervous system recovered. He regulated. And because I’ve spent the last year and a half paying attention to the tiny signals most people never realize are there, I recognized the moment his body said, “Okay...I’m ready again.”

That’s the part I almost skipped.

The mistake I made wasn’t reaching for him. It was assuming that because he trusts me most days, I didn’t need to ask how he felt in this moment. I almost treated our history together like permission, instead of checking in with the cat standing in front of me.

That’s the same skill Lucas is still learning. Not because he’s careless. Simply because nobody teaches us that cats are communicating long before they ever hiss, growl, or swipe.

Most people think a swipe comes out of nowhere.

It almost never does.

Cats aren’t acting out of spite. They’re communicating the only way they know how after softer signals have gone unnoticed.

Reading a cat isn’t something you automatically know how to do. You learn by paying attention. By watching. By getting it wrong sometimes. By realizing that what looked like “out of nowhere“ actually started ten seconds earlier.

Watching the video back reminded me of something I already knew, but apparently needed to learn again.

Trust doesn’t mean a cat stops communicating.

It means they trust you to keep paying attention.

Even after months or years together, every interaction is still a new conversation. And if we’re not listening, they’ll eventually find a louder way to make sure we do.

Your CKD cat looked at her bowl this morning, maybe sniffed it, then walked away. I think every cat guardian with a CKD cat has been there. It’s incredibly infuriating, frustrating, and devastating all at the same time.

You know the food is right. It’s the kidney-support diet, phosphorus-controlled, exactly what you were told to feed. She still won’t touch it. And you’re standing in the kitchen doing the math nobody wants to do: how many days can a cat go without eating before it becomes an emergency. Or before she drops too much weight.

Here’s what you need to know before you touch another supplement

Appetite loss isn’t a food problem (most of the time). It’s a kidney problem showing up as a food problem. What’s that mean exactly?…

As kidney function declines, waste products build up in the blood that a healthy body would have filtered out. That buildup causes nausea. It can cause mouth ulcers. It changes how food actually tastes and smells to your cat, sometimes overnight. So when she turns away from a bowl of food that’s nutritionally correct, she’s not being picky. Her body is telling her that eating feels bad right now, or that the food in front of her doesn’t register as food the way it used to.

This matters because it changes what you’re actually solving for. You are not trying to find the “right” food anymore. You already have that. You’re trying to get any food in, consistently, while her body works through the nausea or pain. And that’s a different problem with a different tool.

Cats with CKD lose muscle mass faster than they lose fat, and muscle loss accelerates the disease itself. A cat who isn’t eating enough is losing the exact thing she needs to fight this. That’s why “she’ll eat when she’s hungry” is the wrong instinct here. Undereating for even a few days in an already-compromised cat is not something to wait out.

A simple solution to get your cat eating again

A DIY meat puree (the recipe is below). But this is one option of many. If it doesn’t click with your cat, there are a dozen other ways to work around appetite loss. I break down more of them here.

But this one is worth trying first because it’s the lowest effort for the highest payoff: a spoonful of something wildly aromatic sitting directly on top of the food she already has. Warm pureed meat with bone broth, right on top of her existing bowl. She smells it before she sees it. She eats around it, then eats the food underneath it, without you changing her diet at all.

That’s the entire mechanism behind a topper: you’re not replacing the nutritionally balanced food your holistic vet or feline nutritionist has you on. You’re making the existing food impossible to ignore.

The one thing to do today…Try this DIY CKD-friendly puree topper

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 8 minutes (plus natural pressure release)

Total time: 25 minutes

Yield: About 10–12 topper portions (1 tsp–1 tbsp each, depending on your cat’s size)

Tools

• Instant Pot

• Blender or food processor

• Food-grade silicon ice cube trays

• Spatula

Ingredients

• 4 oz dark meat chicken (thigh), pork loin, or rabbit. (These options are lower in phosphorus than chicken breast or beef, though beef or bison is fine here since this is about appetite, not macros.)

• ¼ cup cat-safe, low-sodium bone broth (here’s the recipe I use), plus more for blending

• 1 tbsp cooked, mashed sweet potato (carrot or zucchini work too, but sweet potato is ideal)

• 1 small pinch of ground turmeric

• 1 small pinch of dried stinging nettle

• ½ sardine packed in water, or ¼ tsp green-lipped mussel powder

• 1 egg yolk

Instructions

1. Add the meat, sweet potato, and bone broth to the Instant Pot.

2. Seal and pressure cook on high for 2-3 minutes (1 minute if you’re using ground meat). Let it naturally release for 5 minutes, then quick release the rest.

3. Let cool for about 15-20 minutes then transfer the cooked meat, sweet potato, and cooking liquid to a blender.

4. Add the turmeric, nettle, sardine or mussel powder, and egg yolk. Blend until you get a soft, spoonable puree. Add extra bone broth a little at a time if it’s too thick.

5. Portion into silicon ice cube trays for single servings. Freeze the extras.

6. Always warm one portion before serving.

Pro tip: Start with a smaller portion than you think you need. The goal is a spoonful on top of her regular food, not a second meal. Too much topper and she fills up on that instead of the balanced diet underneath it.

Storage: Keeps 3 days refrigerated, up to 4 months frozen in individual portions.

Why these ingredients

Every ingredient in this topper is doing a specific job, not just filling space.

• Dark meat chicken, pork loin, or rabbit. These are lower in phosphorus than chicken breast, beef, or lamb. Phosphorus is the mineral compromised kidneys struggle to filter, so the less she’s taking in from the topper, the less load you’re adding on top of her balanced CKD diet.

• Bone broth. This is what makes the topper spoonable and aromatic instead of just meat sitting in a bowl. It also adds moisture, which matters more than people realize. CKD cats are chronically under-hydrated because failing kidneys can’t concentrate urine the way they used to. Every bit of moisture you get into her is doing real work.

• Sweet potato or carrot. These veggies add additional nutrients, vitamins, fiber and potassium. Potassium is one of the electrolytes CKD cats commonly run low on.

• Turmeric. This is anti-inflammatory, and inflammation is part of what’s driving the disease to progress more rapidly, not just a symptom of it. A pinch goes a long way. This isn’t a dose that needs to be measured to the milligram, but more isn’t better here.

• Stinging nettle. Think of this as the multivitamin of the group. It’s a gentle source of trace minerals without adding phosphorus load.

• Sardine or green-lipped mussel. This is your omega-3 source. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory effects that specifically help slow kidney inflammation, which is part of why fish oil shows up so often in kidney-support protocols.

• Egg yolk. Added protein and fat in a form that’s easy to digest, which matters when her appetite is already fragile and you’re not trying to ask more of her gut than necessary.

None of these ingredients are here by accident, and none of them are here to replace her actual food. They’re here to make the food she’s already eating smell like something worth eating.

What to watch for

If she sniffs it and walks away, that’s not a crisis. It’s data. Try a different meat. Try water instead of bone broth if the fat content seems to be the issue. Some cats want it colder, most want it warmer, and the only way to find out is to experiment and pay attention to what she actually does, not what you assumed she’d do.

This is one option out of many, and it won’t be the right one for every cat. Document what you try and what happens (which protein, which temperature, which day). That documentation is worth more than any single recipe, because it tells you the pattern instead of just the guess.

Before you cycle through toppers for weeks, it’s worth ruling out why she’s not eating in the first place. Dental pain is one of the most commonly missed reasons a CKD cat goes off food. A mouth that hurts doesn’t care how good the topper smells. Nausea is the other big one, and it’s worth addressing directly rather than working around it. Here are natural options I use for nausea and upset stomach that can make her more receptive to food in general, topper or not.

If she hasn’t eaten in over 24 hours regardless of what you offer, that’s not a topper problem anymore. That’s a vet visit today, not tomorrow, situation. Appetite stimulants and anti-nausea medication exist for exactly this, and there’s no holistic points for waiting it out when muscle is being lost in the meantime.

Your senior cat’s coat feels different. Nothing crazy. Just... off. A little rougher along the spine. Greasier near the base of the tail. A mat starting behind one ear that wasn’t there last month. You’ve been telling yourself it’s the season, or she’s just grooming less because she’s older, or it’s probably nothing.

Coat Issues are a Body Clue

Most people think coat issues are a grooming problem. If it’s a grooming issue, you brush more, maybe switch shampoos, move on. If it’s a body clue, you start paying attention to what else is changing at the same time.

The coat is one of the earliest visible places a cat’s body registers that something internally is changing or needs support. Not the most definitive signal. But one of the earliest. The body is already compensating (for pain, for dehydration, for metabolic load, for something it hasn’t announced loudly yet), and the coat is showing you first.

You’ve been trained to read that as cosmetic. It isn’t.

What the Coat Is Actually Telling You

Older cats groom themselves less effectively as they age, and reduced grooming isn’t just about flexibility. It can reflect pain, lower energy, or a body working harder on something else. When grooming decreases, you get matting, skin odor, and coat texture changes that compound into their own inflammatory load.

A few key things worth knowing:

• Poor coat quality is a recognized early sign in feline hyperthyroidism, which disproportionately affects senior cats.

• In cats managing early CKD (common in this age group), dehydration and metabolic changes can show up in coat quality before they’re obvious anywhere else.

• Cats with osteoarthritis, extremely common by age ten, and wildly underdiagnosed because cats don’t limp the way dogs do, lose the flexibility to reach their hips, lower back, and tail base. That’s exactly where guardians report the greasy patches and matting showing up first.

• Dental pain changes grooming too. A mouth that hurts to open wide gets used less for self-grooming, and the coat around the head and jawline is often where that shows up before anything else does.

None of this means a coat change diagnoses anything. It means a coat change in a senior cat is a signal. A warning flag that tells you, “hey, I need to pay more attention and maybe even get my cat to a vet”.

Why This Is Easy to Miss

Coat changes happen slowly. A little duller this week. A little greasier next month. Matted behind one ear by the time you finally say something about it. Gradual change is the hardest kind to catch, because you’re comparing today to yesterday instead of today to six months ago. Nothing about “slightly different than yesterday” registers as urgent.

That’s also why it gets dismissed so easily. A coat change doesn’t look like an emergency. It looks like laziness, or age, or a cat who’s overdue for a brushing. A vet won’t flag it in a routine visit unless it’s severe. A guardian won’t mention it because it feels too small to bring up. So nobody says anything. Not the vet, not you. And nothing gets said or done for months.

I nearly missed it with Veda. Her coat went less shiny, a little dull along her back. A small change that could have easily been dismissed, if I wasn’t already paying attention (and KNEW what to pay attention to). I knew her baseline well enough to notice the change within days instead of months. That’s the entire difference. Most guardians don’t have that baseline because nobody ever tells them to build one. So the coat keeps changing subtly, the guardian keeps explaining it away, and by the time it’s obvious enough to worry about, the body has been compensating for a long time already.

The trap isn’t that the signal is hidden. It’s that it’s easy to dismiss one week at a time until it isn’t a week anymore.

The Pattern Matters More Than Any Single Sign

A rougher coat by itself doesn’t tell you much. Add a few more small things happening around the same time, and it tells you a lot.

• Coat change + drinking more + losing weight while still eating normally: that combination of changes is one of the earliest signs guardians catch & report before a hyperthyroid or early kidney diagnosis. Alone, any one of those three gets explained away. Together, you know you need to get to the vet and have bloodwork done.

• Coat change + slower to jump up + more time spent lying down: that’s often the body compensating for joint pain or arthritis, not “just getting older.” Cats rarely limp the way dogs or humans do. The coat and the hesitation are frequently the only signals you get.

• Coat change + eating slower + a little more withdrawn than usual: this group of signals shows up often with dental pain or general discomfort. A cat who has pain when he chews also grooms less, eats slower, and wants to be left alone. None of those three alone looks like much. Together, you know it’s time for a dental checkup.

Each of those signs on its own has a dozen innocent explanations and are easy to explain away. But signs that keep showing up together (i.e. the pattern), on the same cat, in the same stretch of weeks, aren’t a coincidence. That’s a body communicating with you…telling you something isn’t right. That's the whole reason patterns matter more than any single symptom ever will. A body doesn't send one signal when something is wrong. It typically sends several, over weeks, and waits for someone to notice they're connected.

One Thing to Do This Week

For the next two weeks, run your hands along your cat’s spine, base of the tail, and behind the ears once a day. Write down three things only:

• How the coat texture feels

• Whether your cat is grooming differently

• Whether the change is stable, getting worse, or comes and goes

You’re not checking for anything in particular. You’re creating a baseline. You’re learning what her coat actually feels like right now, this month, on this specific cat…the texture, the amount of oil, whether it’s the same every day or changes. That’s the whole action.

Most guardians can describe their cat’s personality down to the smallest habit and couldn’t tell you what her coat felt like three months ago. You can’t catch a change against a baseline you never built. Build it now, while nothing urgent is happening, and the next real change won’t sit there unnoticed for months. It’ll be obvious the week it starts.

The Guardian Who Catches It Early

The guardian who catches it early isn't the one with more information. She's the one who touched her cat's coat in a normal month, not just a worried one. She built the baseline before she needed it, so the change couldn't hide inside "maybe it's nothing" for six months.

You thought “natural” meant safe.

The bottle had a leaf on it. The label listed words you could pronounce. You felt good switching from the blue jugs to something gentler. Especially with cats in the house. Surely a plant-based formula wouldn’t hurt them.

Except it has for years. Every time you mopped the floors. Every time your cat groomed their paws and ingested what you’d cleaned with. The synthetic fragrances that smell like “spring breeze”; those aren’t oils. They’re chemical compounds designed to smell pleasant to humans while silently accumulating in your cat’s system.

This is how the system works. The label earns your trust. You never look closer.

Here’s what I learned after noticing Veda over-grooming her front paws for months before I connected it to what I was cleaning the floors with: I needed to stop trusting labels and start making my own. Because controlling the ingredients meant I could actually keep her safe.

Why Make Your Own

Store-bought “natural” detergents still contain surfactants, binders, and fragrances designed to earn your trust, not actually formulated with cats’ neurology and detox pathways in mind. When you make your own, you know exactly what’s touching your cat’s skin, what they’re breathing around, and what stays in the fabric they sleep on.

It costs pennies per load. It works. And it smells like what you actually put in it. Not like a marketing department’s idea of “fresh.”

The Two Versions

I use both, depending on what I’m washing. The powdered version for sheets and heavy loads. The liquid for delicates and when I want something I can grab quickly.

Powdered Detergent

Makes about 50-100 loads

• 2 lbs Borax

• 1.5 lbs Washing Soda

• 1.25 lbs Baking Soda

• 1/4 cup of Epsom salt (or regular salt)

• 3 bars Castile bar soap (grated)

• 30–80 drops high quality essential oil (optional)

• Large glass jar with lid

Steps:

1. Grate the soap finely using a box grater or food processor.

2. In a large bowl, combine the Borax, washing soda, baking soda, and salt.

3. Add the grated soap and mix thoroughly.

4. If you’re using essential oils, add them drop by drop and stir well to distribute evenly (you want the scent absorbed into the mixture, not clumped).

5. Transfer to a glass jar and seal.

6. Use 2 tablespoons per standard load, 1 tablespoon for HE machines.

Liquid Detergent

Makes about 64 oz

• 1⅔ cups Washing Soda

• 1 cup liquid Castile Soap

• 10 cups boiling water

• 30 drops high quality essential oils

• 64 oz glass jar (or gallon container)

Optional materials:

• ½ cup Distilled White Vinegar (added per load for softening)

• Funnel (optional, but helpful)

Steps:

1. Dissolve the washing soda in 4 cups of boiling water, stirring until fully dissolved.

2. Add the Castile soap with another 4 cups of water and mix.

3. Add 2 more cups of water to reach the right consistency.

4. If you’re using oils, add them now and stir well.

5. Let it cool, then pour into jars using a funnel.

6. Shake before each use. The mixture separates as it sits, which is normal.

7. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup per load depending on how soiled the laundry is.

Essential Oil Pairings by Mood

Relaxing:

• Lavender + Roman Chamomile — Soft, floral, and deeply calming without overstimulation.

• Cedarwood (Himalayan) + Frankincense — Grounding and emotionally balancing, perfect for cozy days.

Energizing:

• Grapefruit + Lemon — Bright and citrusy; safe when fully rinsed and dried.

• Lavender + Rosemary — A gently uplifting combo.

One Critical Addition: Vinegar in the Rinse

For a natural fabric softener (and to remove any residue), add 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar to your rinse cycle. This is the move that makes the difference. It ensures nothing clings to the fabric your cat will sleep on.

Why These Ingredients Are Safe

Borax is a naturally occurring mineral. Washing soda is just sodium carbonate (the same thing in baking soda, just in different form). Castile soap is plant-based and fully biodegradable. Baking soda is baking soda. None of these leave residues that accumulate in your cat’s system or off-gas synthetic chemicals.

Essential oils, if you use them, should be high-quality (I trust AnimalEO, Plant Therapy, and Mountain Rose Herbs) and used sparingly. The oils are fully diluted into the detergent, dried on fabric, and not in any concentration that would be harmful when trace amounts are absorbed through grooming. But if you’re anxious about any oil exposure, skip them entirely. Unscented works perfectly.

What to Avoid

Don’t use tea tree, peppermint, or eucalyptus oils around cats. Don’t use so many oils that they’re overwhelming in scent. The goal is subtle, not perfumey. Don’t add anything else unless you know exactly what it is and how cats process it.

Storage & Shelf Life

Glass jars. Airtight lids. A cool, dry place. Powdered lasts 6-12 months. Liquid lasts 3-6 months (it can thicken or separate, but still works. Just shake it well). Label with the date you made it.

The Bigger Picture

The goal here is to lower the total toxic load in your cat’s environment, which matters more than you’ve probably been told. The things that touch their cats most.

You’re becoming the kind of guardian who doesn’t outsource her cat’s safety to a label. That’s more important and meaningful than you probably realize. Give yourself some credit!

Make a batch this week. Notice how different your home smells…like nothing artificial. Notice how your cat’s skin looks after a few weeks. Notice how much cheaper it is.

Your cat is drinking more water. You noticed it. You probably felt relieved.

You shouldn’t.

In a cat, especially a senior cat or one on a raw or wet food diet, drinking water more regularly isn’t a sign that things are going well. It’s a signal that something is working harder than it should, most likely, the kidneys. And the difference between reading that signal correctly and explaining it away is sometimes the difference between catching something early and managing a crisis.

Your cat drinking more water isn’t a good sign. Here’s why.

Cats are desert animals. They evolved over thousands of years to get the vast majority of their hydration from prey; raw, moisture-dense tissue with a water content of 70% or higher. Their thirst drive is deliberately weak by design. They were never built to drink from a bowl the way a dog does. When a cat begins seeking out water consistently, the body is compensating for something it isn’t getting from food.

This is the part the pet food industry doesn’t put on the bag. Every kibble label with a little water bowl illustration is selling you a framework; that hydration equals access to water, that a full bowl next to a full dish is a complete picture of a cared-for cat. It isn’t. It was never designed to be. That framing served the product. It didn’t serve your cat.

A cat who is drinking more is not a cat who is well-hydrated. Drinking is the signal that hydration is already behind. The body is trying to catch up. The bowl isn’t the solution; it’s the evidence that the solution is missing from food, i.e. hydration.

This matters even more as cats age. Senior cats lose kidney concentration efficiency over time. It’s a normal part of aging, and it happens gradually and subtly. Their kidneys need more fluid volume to do the same filtration work they did at 4 years old. A senior cat who appears to be “drinking fine” can still be chronically under-hydrated at the cellular level, particularly if she’s eating low-moisture food or her system is already under any kind of stress. You can’t see cellular hydration. But you can see other things, if you know what you’re looking for. The inflammation pattern that shows up before the obvious signs is one of the things I track alongside hydration in senior cats.

What I noticed with Veda, and what it was actually telling me.

Veda has been on a raw diet for years. My cats almost never touch the water bowl (they get what they need from their food). That’s how it’s supposed to work when they’re eating the way their bodies were designed to eat.

So when Veda started drinking from the bowl semi-regularly, I noticed immediately. Not because I was scanning for it. Because it was out of the ordinary.

Then I started noticing a slight change in her coat. A little less shine than usual. Slightly greasy-looking. The kind of thing a stranger walking through my house would never clock. But I know her coat. I know what it looks like when she’s doing well. And this wasn’t it.

Two incredibly subtle signals, easy to dismiss individually. Coat texture? She’s getting older. Drinking more? At least she’s staying hydrated. That’s how the explaining-away starts. But together, those two signals were pointing at the same thing: her system was working harder than it should. Not in crisis (yet). Not even symptomatic in any conventional sense. Just... under more load than usual. And I took note and started making slight changes to her routine. A few weeks later, she was back to her normal self.

Coat quality and water-seeking behavior are two of the signals I track most closely in senior cats. They rarely show up alone. When they show up together, I listen. The other early signals that tend to cluster with these two are worth knowing before you need them.

Hydration isn’t just kidney function in isolation; it’s connected to EVERYTHING.

• Gut health.

• Skin and coat quality.

• Digestion.

When those small signals start stacking, the body is telling you something well before the labs ever will. That window (between the first signal and the first abnormal lab result) is the most important window you have. It’s when you can make changes (like I did) to support her system and help her body heal on its own.

So, you’re probably wondering, “well, what can I do then?”. Here’s one super simple, yet highly impactful thing you can start doing TODAY to start improving your cat’s hydration.

Add warm bone broth to every meal.

Not a food overhaul. Not a supplement protocol. One or 2 tablespoons, warm, poured over whatever your cat is already eating. It works with kibble, wet food, and raw. It increases fluid intake without a transition battle, without your cat deciding today is the day they go on a hunger strike. How to know if it’s working.

After a week of adding broth, you’re looking for two things (and neither of them is the water bowl). You’ll want to look for:

1. Is your cat cleaning the their food bowl? Finishing faster than usual?

2. Do the litter box clumps look larger and more dilute than before? (Larger clumps, lighter in color, less compact than usual. That’s dilute urine. That’s the kidneys getting the fluid they needed.)

Those two observations tell you more about your cat’s actual hydration status than the water bowl ever will. If you’re seeing both, great. Keep going. If you’re not seeing much change after a week or two, that’s information too. It means your cat’s body needs more support than one intervention can give it. At that point, I’d be looking at additional things like food, kidney function, what else might be adding load to the kidneys & liver, and I’d be scheduling a call with my vet to get bloodwork done and voice the changes I’ve been noticing.
