There was a time when no one questioned the importance of managing a household.

In the days of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott, more than 50 years and an ocean apart, the mistress of a household was expected to do far more than cook meals and keep things tidy. Whether she lived in a country house, grand estate, or a modest town home, she managed resources, planned ahead, extended hospitality, oversaw daily operations, and shaped the culture of family life.

She wasn’t just maintaining a home. She was running one.

Today, homemaking is often understood as a collection of tasks: cooking, cleaning, laundry, childcare. We have lost the distinction between doing the work of a household and managing it.

The women of the nineteenth century kept accounts, planned menus around budgets and seasons, organized the work of the home, educated children, cared for relatives, coordinated social obligations, and preserved family traditions. Some supervised servants. The household was an enterprise that required management.

The work of the home was not a side project but one of the central institutions of society.

We still recognize these skills when they appear elsewhere. Resource management, long-term planning, leadership, logistics, creating culture, and setting standards are all respected abilities in the workplace. Yet when practiced within the home, we often fail to see them at all.

Scripture does not share that view.

The woman described in Proverbs 31 plans, provides, purchases, plants, oversees, and looks well to the ways of her household. Her work extends beyond chores to stewardship.

Perhaps we’ve forgotten that a household is more than the sum of its tasks.

It is where children’s values are formed, traditions are handed down, meals become memories, and faith is practiced in ordinary ways. It is where much of life takes place.

Most of us do not live in grand houses. We may not oversee servants or vast properties. But the principle remains: a household is still something to be stewarded.

Homemaking becomes more meaningful when we stop seeing ourselves merely as women completing domestic tasks and start thinking of ourselves as the lady of the estate - the one entrusted with the care and management of a home.

The phrase may belong to another century.

But the idea does not.

Not just individually, but culturally.

The way a nation gardens reveals what it values. Efficiency or beauty. Formality or wildness. Production or pleasure. Whether land is viewed primarily as something to control, something to survive from, or something to tend lovingly over time.

I grew up on a homestead where my main summer job was mowing the lawn and helping my mom with the landscaping. My dad’s jurisdiction was the vegetable garden, which was abundant in both produce and weeds.

My mom loves neat and tidy landscaping with plenty of warm-toned plants such as hibiscus, red begonias, magenta impatiens, golden daylilies, and hostas tucked neatly into borders.

My dad’s garden was practical. Rows of vegetables. Bare dirt (and sometimes cardboard) paths. Buckets of tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, and okra. And plenty of sweat equity.

I think I inherited both instincts.

I tend toward cottage-feeling landscaping with a French country flair. But I also have this burning desire to tuck in edibles like herbs, berries, greens, and the occasional tomato plant wherever I can justify it. Beauty paired with function, which is more or less how my parents raised me.

Lately, this has been especially on my mind because I have a large empty bed of raw dirt where I’ve grown annual vegetables in the past but am tired of starting over every year and am craving something more beautiful and permanent.

Less “patch of dirt producing vegetables.” More “beautiful edible landscape.”

So I began curating pictures and researching the kind of garden I was imagining. And unsurprisingly, the French and English seem to have mastered the art of the beautiful, edible landscape. Here’s what I found…

The French Potager

The French potager, literally meaning “for the soup pot,” is a vegetable garden fashioned to fill the belly and please the eye in equal measure. Traditionally, French garden design prized order, symmetry, and nature thoughtfully arranged. Geometric layouts, artistically trimmed hedges, gravel paths, espaliered fruit trees, herbs tucked between lettuces, and vegetables arranged with artistic intention as much as agricultural efficiency.

Across cultures, the formal geometric garden has long carried a symbolic weight; an assertion of human order over wild nature. Louis XIV's Versailles is the perfect example of a landscape engineered to announce mastery and control.

To the French, feeding your family and making something beautiful were never two separate ambitions. They were the same gesture, expressed in the garden as naturally as anywhere else. Today the potager often takes a more relaxed form, but its origins were decidedly structured.

The English Kitchen Garden

The English kitchen garden shared the same goal: beauty and utility together. But the English defined beauty entirely differently.

Where the French traditionally saw perfection in order and control, the English saw beauty in the appearance of freedom. Rather than being bordered by hedges, an English kitchen garden was enclosed by stone or brick walls and kept close to the house for practical access to herbs, vegetables, and fruit. An English kitchen gardener might let a squash vine wander across a brick path, not from neglect but by design, because the ideal was a garden that looked as though nature had arranged it. Roses and vegetables growing together. Herbs spilling onto pathways. Structure present but softened by abundance.

The English landscape tradition valued what looked natural over what looked controlled. The ideal was not a garden conquered but a garden befriended.

Same overarching goal as the French. Same love of beauty paired with function. Entirely different ideas about what beauty actually is.

The American Vegetable Garden

The American vegetable garden is a different creature entirely.

If the French potager is art and the English kitchen garden is a romance, the American vegetable garden is a working farm in miniature. It was not designed for lifestyle or beauty. It was designed to feed a family through a long winter with enough potatoes, beans, and squash to fill a root cellar, not just enough herbs for tonight’s dinner.

Straight rows and bare dirt paths made sense. You planted what you could eat, got to the weeds when you could, and that was enough.

Beauty was not the point. Survival was.

There is nothing wrong with that tradition. It is honest and serious and it fed people.

But in spite of that connotation, American women also enjoyed mixing beauty with function, as is evidenced in this letter from a 1932 women’s magazine:

“Beans and beets and spinach and carrots are important foods for the body, but just as important to me are the early pansies and violets, the purple and pink and white of larkspur and cosmos and phlox and zinnias. They are food for the soul.”

Across cultures, there seems to be a recurring desire to unite beauty with utility. Raised beds, heirloom vegetables, cut flower gardens, and edible landscaping are not merely aesthetic trends, but living arguments that function does not have to be unsightly.

The disciplined beauty of the French potager. The romantic abundance of the English cottage garden. The honest, hardworking practicality of the American vegetable garden.

I find myself drawn to some combination of all three traditions and aim to create a garden that is both physically nourishing and aesthetically pleasing. A place where lavender grows beside tomatoes, herbs spill onto pathways, usefulness is not considered unsightly, and beauty is not considered frivolous.

Just as God created the Garden of Eden to be both pleasing to the eye and good for food, perhaps beauty and function were never meant to be separated at all.

A garden can feed your family and still be worth looking at. Utility and delight can grow side by side.

Perhaps deeper still, gardens are reflections of the civilization surrounding them. Geometric precision speaks of order and dominion. Rambling abundance often emerges in seasons of stability, leisure, and delight in beauty. Rows of vegetables and worn dirt paths tell stories of practicality, resilience, and seasons where survival took precedence over aesthetics.

In every age, people cultivate the land according to what they believe matters most.

That expanse of raw dirt in my backyard is still waiting. But I think I know now what I want to grow there.

Something worth tending for a long time.

I had visions of all the pictures I was going to take for you and all the bounty I was going to leave with.

Instead, I left empty-handed and didn’t get a single pic. Not because they didn’t have anything beautiful (there was plenty of loveliness), but because they didn’t have the varieties I was looking for, and certainly not at the prices I was hoping for.

I sometimes miss when there wasn’t endless information online and whatever the nursery happened to have were the choices. You didn’t know about seventeen obscure hydrangea cultivars, so you were perfectly happy with the one sitting in front of you. Good times.

I then headed to Walmart to pick up some cedar mulch. I had bought the exact right amount to cover everything…almost. Just a couple of bare spots hiding under some bushes. And since I was going to be in the garden department anyway, I thought I’d take a quick peek at plants. Not that I was planning to buy anything, given my abysmally low success rate with Walmart plants.

Naturally, I proceeded to find the most gorgeous, fragrant gardenia (when is a gardenia not gorgeous and fragrant?) and was completely smitten. Did I have a place for it? No. But I have a lot of empty space at the moment, so I was sure it would work somewhere.

Never mind that this was Walmart or that gardenias aren’t the exactly the easiest things to grow. She had me at hello.

All of those things are certainly part of it. But what I find most interesting are the daily habits surrounding the home. A slower rhythm. A reverence for ordinary life. Spaces that feel lived in, tended, and welcoming. The French are known for their joie de vivre, or enjoyment of life, and much of that seems to begin at home.

Modern life pushes us to consume quickly, rush constantly, and treat the home as little more than a place to pass through between obligations.

But the home was always meant to be something much more meaningful than that.

It was designed to serve as a refuge, a workshop, and a place of nourishment.

These are five French homemaking habits that beautifully support that kind of home.

1. Prioritize Mealtime

French culture has long treated meals as an important part of daily life, not just a necessity. People sit down together, linger, and talk. Dinner isn’t something to race through while standing at the counter scrolling a phone.

Many families barely sit together anymore. Everyone eats at different times, in different rooms, and often distracted by screens. And while every season looks different, there’s still genuine value in protecting shared meals when you can.

Dinner itself doesn’t need to look impressive. Sometimes it’s simple food after a long day when everyone is tired. Maybe the table isn’t perfectly set or cleared off. It’s part of the charm of family life.

Meals give people time to actually see and hear one another. That’s the beauty of gathering around the table.

2. Choose Quality Over Quantity

French homemakers have traditionally favored fewer, better things that are durable, useful, and beautiful. That mindset feels almost foreign now because modern culture encourages constant replacement. New décor for every season. Cheap furniture that barely survives one move. Closets full of things people don’t even like wearing.

But stewardship requires slowing down before bringing something into the home and asking:

Will this actually serve our family well? Will I still value it a year from now? Or am I buying it because I’m bored, restless, or chasing a feeling?

Homes often feel richer without excess in them. An old wooden table with scratches from years of family dinners carries more character than rooms filled with trendy pieces bought for quick visual impact. The most beautiful homes are curated gradually, over time, with care and restraint.

3. Use Beautiful Things Daily

One of my favorite French habits is using beautiful things in ordinary life instead of saving them for some future special occasion that may never come.

The good dishes get used. A beautiful dress might be worn at home just because. Linen towels are allowed to be part of daily life. Flowers appear on the table without waiting for a special occasion.

French homes also tend to favor things that are both beautiful and functional. A well-made wooden table, a linen apron, a ceramic pitcher sitting on the counter ready to be used. Beauty is woven into daily life rather than treated as something separate from it.

Many women spend years postponing enjoyment while waiting for life to finally feel settled enough to deserve it. But joy doesn’t have to wait for ideal circumstances.

4. Create a Sanctuary

French interiors are often designed for comfort rather than show. Softer lighting. Well-loved chairs people actually want to sit in. Natural textures like linen, wood, wicker, and stone. Rooms that feel welcoming instead of overstimulating.

But creating a peaceful home goes beyond décor. A home’s atmosphere is shaped by the way life is lived inside it, and truly restful homes are increasingly rare these days. There’s a noticeable difference between a home that feels constantly frantic and one that feels steady.

That sense of peace is often built through very ordinary things. Lamps glowing in the evening instead of harsh overhead lighting. Fresh flowers on the counter. Soft music while folding laundry. Predictable mealtimes. Less clutter competing for attention. Family worship woven naturally into the rhythm of the home.

Homes that feel like a haven are shaped slowly, through small habits repeated over time.

5. Practice Gentle Self-Care Rituals

French women are known for looking polished without appearing overly consumed by appearance. But that look is supported by consistency and care: hair brushed, well-made clothing that’s cared for, dressing with intention, simple self-care routines practiced faithfully. Presentation matters, but without the obsession influencer culture often attaches to beauty.

That balance is worth aspiring to.

Simple, healthy habits, practiced faithfully, can have a profound effect, both on your own wellbeing and those you care for.

Things like: nourishing meals, sunlight, movement, proper rest, prayer and time spent in the Word, and getting dressed for the day…

Small but meaningful ways of caring for yourself so you can better care for the life God has given you.

These French habits remind us that homemaking isn’t just about efficiency, keeping a house, or checking off tasks. It’s about creating and noticing beauty in the everyday.

And over time, those small habits shape the atmosphere people feel when they walk through the door.

Not necessarily better furnished, bigger, or wealthier.

Just…calmer.

You can feel it when you read old journals, old homemaking books, or listen to older people describe daily life. There was a steadiness to the home that is very difficult to find now, even in Christian homes that are trying to live biblically.

We assume they were calmer because life was slower.

But that’s not actually true.

Life was physically harder. Work was constant. Children had chores. Mothers did not necessarily have appliances. Fathers worked long hours.

And yet the home itself carried a kind of quiet order that kept everyone’s nerves from being constantly frayed.

That calm did not come from personality.

It came from ordinary habits that almost no one practices anymore.

“If it seems too hard, you’re probably doing something wrong.”

Winter Storms

A major winter storm was forecast for our area this week. People rushed the stores. Lines for propane stretched longer than I’ve ever seen. Grocery pick-up shoppers overflowed the parking lot. One driver even cut around the line on the wrong side of the road to steal a grocery pick-up parking spot.

It was a scene of urgency, anxiety, and survival at the expense of courtesy and kindness.

Quite the opposite composure of a woman who is not afraid of snow for her household.

Ironically, my pantry looked sparser than usual because I had recently overhauled our grocery budget. If we were iced in, we might have run out of some of our usual weekly items.

But we would not have been without food.

And that made me think deeply about the balance between good stewardship vs. barely scrimping by and depending on availability of items at the local grocery store.

This is where stewardship and trusting in God’s provision intersect.

Lately, I have been decluttering our home. Letting go of the “just in case” items. And it has been freeing. But storms like this expose the tension every homemaker feels…

How do we avoid hoarding without being unprepared?

She Is Not Afraid

Why is the woman of Proverbs 31 not afraid of snow for her household? Because all of her household is clothed with scarlet (verse 21) - representing expensive, high quality, warm clothing.

But it wasn’t because she panic-shopped.

Earlier in the chapter, we find where the woman gets the clothing:
“She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands.” Proverbs 31:13

She prepared long before the storm ever came.

She developed skill. She built systems. She learned stewardship. She used her husband’s provision wisely over time to create stability in her home.

She’s not just “making money.” She’s making provision.

It’s a beautiful example of true partnership between a husband and wife. Her husband is respected in the gates, and he trusts his wife completely. He not only trusts her, but “praises her” (verse 28). She uses their resources to provide food, clothing, and additional income for the household. And help for the needy.

She considers a field and buys it. She plants a vineyard. She makes garments and sells them.

This is a woman who knows how to turn resources into more resources. So when snow comes, she is calm. Not because she stored excessively, but because she cultivated capability.

That is a wise woman whose worth is far above rubies.

January is my birth month, and for whatever reason, it still fills me with childlike giddiness. Maybe it’s the small loveliness it brings to the middle of winter, or maybe it’s hearing from loved ones, letting me know they’re thinking of me. Whatever the reason, it remains my favorite time of year.

I’m not sure how it happened, but it’s kind of a half-joke, half-tradition to celebrate all of January as my birth month rather than just celebrating my birthday for one day. It really helps keep the winter doldrums away and my heart filled with gratitude.

One tradition I’ve always loved is going clothes shopping with my mom to pick out a birthday outfit. Since we no longer live near one another, this year she offered to buy me a pair of boots I’d mentioned wanting but hadn’t yet purchased.

I’ve been slowly upgrading my wardrobe with nicer, more intentional pieces, and rain boots were on the list. I had initially planned on purchasing some Hunter wellies, but after reading reviews, and learning the company had been bought out, I couldn’t justify the $190 price tag given the reported decline in quality.

Then there were the so-called “Princess Kate wellies.” Lovely, of course. Also, unsurprisingly, even more costly at $300.

I briefly considered a budget-friendly pair at Target, but reviews mentioned an unflattering shape, so not great as both fashion and chore boots. Pass.

And then I found these beauties!

Made of rubber (not plastic), lovely colors, and on sale to boot (couldn’t resist ;)). I ordered the olive green color in my usual size, and they fit perfectly. Love the adjustable strap on the side. Comfortable to walk in. Nice sole that doesn’t have too high a heel. The color is a lovely lighter grayish-green - dubbed “faded muck” by my aunt - which works beautifully with my palette.

I’ve mostly been wearing them for outdoor chores, but they’re polished enough to wear out in public. All I need now is a rainy day errand, so I can properly debut my Princess Kate–inspired wellies.

My daughter is a senior in high school, and the question of the hour is, “What are you going to do next year?”

She wants to be a homemaker, but there’s no clear path for that. No guidance counselor. No obvious training track. No career ladder.

Which raises an interesting question:

What if we treated homemaking as a career?

After all, Titus 2 tells older women to “admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers…” Titus 2:4-5

But even among homemakers, homemaking is often framed as temporary - what you do while the children are young, or what you do until you return to the paid workforce. It’s spoken of as an interim role, a supporting role, or something you fit in around “real work,” but rarely as the primary calling itself.

And yet…

The home is the most expensive, influential, and emotionally complex institution most people will ever manage. It functions like a small organization. But many women are doing executive-level work with intern-level training and mindset.

Treating homemaking as a career changes how you plan, how you see yourself, and how you measure success.

The word career often conjures images of cubicles or climbing ladders, but according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it simply means a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a long-term calling.

Homemaking deserves to be treated as a career, not because it needs validation, but because it already functions like one.

Our family (except me, praise the Lord) has been sick for the past couple of weeks, and the margin in our days has made room for real rest instead of just survival. It reminded me how much I value flexibility. And how easily life becomes heavy when everything is packed too tightly.

A neighbor we had never met before gifted us a loaf of pumpkin bread.

Just a warm, wrapped offering given quietly, received with surprised delight, and sliced gratefully later that evening.

This isn’t a checklist or a rulebook. Just a collection of ideas to return to when you want gift giving to feel calmer and more grounded.
