Smart email, good idea, and I was ready to like them. So I did what everyone does before saying yes.

I Googled them.

Nothing. No newsletter, no posts, no product. The bio on their one social profile didn't even match the story in the email.

I didn't say no. I just never replied with the enthusiasm I had two minutes earlier, and they'll never know why.

Silence is an answer

When someone searches your name and finds nothing, they don't think "how mysterious." They quietly assume one of three things. You haven't done the work. You did it but never shipped it, which looks the same from the outside. Or you talk more than you build.

Maybe none of that is true about you. Doesn't matter. Checking a person takes ten seconds now, and an empty result gets read as a verdict.

You're being searched right now, by the way. A potential client. A podcast host choosing between two guests. A reader hovering over your paid tier. The opportunities that die at that search bar never send a rejection email.

And Google is only half of it now

Here's the newer problem, and almost nobody in our space is talking about it yet.

People have stopped Googling "best newsletter about X." They open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask, "who's worth reading on X?" And the AI gives them three names. Not ten blue links to scroll past. Three names, stated with total confidence.

Those tools can only recommend what exists in public text. Your published archive is literally the raw material they learn from and cite. No archive means you're not buried on page two anymore. You're simply absent from the answer.

Try it. Ask ChatGPT who the go-to people are in your niche. If you're not in there, that's not an insult, it's an instruction.

The upside is that this game is still young. Most of your competitors have thin public footprints too. A year of consistent publishing under one clear name, on one topic, is enough to start showing up in AI answers while everyone else is still debating whether to start.

The fix hasn't changed. The urgency has.

If your name currently returns nothing, human search or AI search, here's my honest 30-day version:

First, claim your ground. Your name or brand on a Substack URL, plus one social handle, plus a bio that says what you do in one plain sentence. Everything links back to one home.

Second, write one flagship post. Your best thinking on the problem you solve, deep enough that you'd happily send it instead of a sales call.

Then publish weekly. Not perfect posts, public ones. Both Google and AI models reward the same boring thing: the same name, the same topic, showing up again and again. A pattern is what makes strangers trust you, and it's also what makes machines associate a subject with your name.

Nobody can fake a two-year archive. That's the moat.

"But I'm a private person"

Fine. So am I, mostly. This isn't about sharing your breakfast or your feelings.

A post about how you'd solve a client's problem reveals nothing about your life and everything about your competence. Professional evidence, not personal exposure. That's the trade.

The homework

Two searches, five minutes.

Google your name plus what you do. Then ask an AI who's worth following in your niche.

Whatever comes back is your current first impression with every stranger who matters to your business, human or machine. If you don't like it, at least now you know exactly what the next 30 days are for.

Build something. Publish it. Make yourself findable in both places people actually look.

Share

P.S. What comes up when you Google your name? Not just banks. Salespeople, employers, landlords, even friends. And the treatment changes in ways that are predictable enough to write down.

I’ve personally lived through several of these levels, from the corporate employee watching every euro to running a seven-figure business, and the shifts genuinely shocked me. Some upgrades are real. Most are bait. And the biggest secret sits at the top of this article’s last section, so let’s climb.

One honest note before we start: the levels below are patterns, stitched from my own life, my students’ stories, and what people at each level consistently report. Your mileage will vary. The pattern won’t.

Subscribe now

Level 1: $0, living paycheck to paycheck

At this level, the world charges you for being poor. That’s not a metaphor. It’s the business model.

Everything costs more when you have nothing. The account below minimum balance gets the monthly fee. The overdraft that exists because you ran out of money charges you money for running out of money. Can’t buy in bulk, so you pay the highest unit price in the store. Can’t pay insurance annually, so you pay the monthly markup. The bank answers you through a phone tree, the landlord wants a guarantor, and every application form is designed on the assumption that you’re a risk.

at this level, the world’s treatment teaches you that money problems are character problems.

They’re not.

A system that charges fees to people defined by not having money is not a neutral system.

If you’re here right now, the game is genuinely rigged on this floor, and the single most profitable thing you can do is get one month ahead, because that’s the level where the fees stop.

Level 2: $10K saved

Ten thousand doesn’t change how the world treats you. It changes how you treat the world, and that turns out to matter more.

Nobody rolls out a carpet at ten grand. The bank still doesn’t know your name. But something shifts in every room you walk into: you can say no. No to the terrible job, for a while. No to the exploitative rent, because you can afford a deposit elsewhere. No to the emergency panic, because a broken laptop is now an errand, not a crisis.

I remember crossing this level in my corporate years and being confused by how different I felt in meetings. Same salary, same title. But I negotiated differently, because for the first time I wasn’t negotiating scared.

The world treats desperate people worse. Not out of cruelty, out of leverage.

The first ten thousand doesn’t buy you status. It buys back your posture. And people can smell posture.

Level 3: $100K

This is the level where the machine notices you, and the machine’s first move is to flatter you.

The bank that ignored you now emails about your “exclusive” premium account, which is mostly the same account with a metal card and a fee.

Financial advisers start finding you. So does every private banking funnel, every “wealth management” seminar, every salesperson trained to say “someone at your level.”

Write this sentence somewhere you’ll see it:

at every level of wealth, an industry exists to sell you the feeling of the next level.

At $100K it’s premium cards and adviser lunches. The treatment upgrade is real, warmer voices, faster service, but you’re not the client being served. You’re the product being harvested, because $100K is exactly the level where fees start compounding into someone else’s fortune.

The counterintuitive move here: keep behaving like Level 2. The people who pass through $100K fastest are the ones who accept none of the upgrades.

Level 4: $1M

Two things happen at a million, and they pull in opposite directions.

First, doors open that you didn’t know were doors. Access to investments with minimums designed to keep smaller money out. Bankers who call you back the same hour. Mistakes that get waived with an apology instead of a fee. The world becomes noticeably softer, and softest exactly where it used to be hardest: when something goes wrong.

Second, and nobody prepares you for this: the treatment change you feel most isn’t from institutions. It’s from people.

Some friends get weird. Family members develop opinions about what you should do for them. You learn to say “we’re just ok” and change the subject, which is why wealthy people all sound identically vague. They’re not being modest. They’re being safe.

And here’s the fact that breaks most people’s mental model of this level: a million no longer looks like the movies. It looks like a paid-off house and index funds. The person at this level often drives the older car from my last essay.
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"9e482ad5-75f3-43cc-a290-52a54db3e79a","caption":"I spent fifteen years in corporate marketing before I got out. Instead, everything becomes access and discretion.

Private banking stops emailing and starts visiting. Problems you have are handled by people whose job title is handling.

The world essentially pre-clears your path, and the last friction disappears.

Which produces the strangest reported effect of the whole ladder: money stops being felt. Not because life is empty, but because money at this level is like oxygen, only noticeable if it’s missing. The scoreboard that organized decades of striving just stops updating.

And so the people here, the ones who stay sane anyway, all migrate to the same three currencies: time, health, and who’s at the table.

Ask them what wealthy means now and none of them answers with a number. Every single answer is some version of “my mornings are mine and I like the people in my calendar.”

Hold that thought, because it’s the entire punchline of this article.

Reading this from a forward? You have a good friend. The adviser lunches are bait. Even much of the softness at $1M is institutions being kind to their revenue.

Strip the bait away and the real prizes on the ladder are the posture you gain at $10K and the autonomy the $10M crowd ends up worshipping.

One of those costs ten thousand. The other one, if you build income you own instead of income you’re allowed, arrives decades before eight figures ever would.

I know because the treatment change I felt most in my entire life wasn’t at any savings milestone. It was the day I stopped needing an employer’s permission to live a Tuesday.

The bank didn’t notice. Every other part of my life did.

So climb, genuinely. Get past the floor where they fee you for being poor, that part is not optional. First one online in the morning, last name in the evening threads, present in every meeting, replying to everything within minutes, weekends included. If effort were a currency, she would have been the richest person in the building. People used her as an example. Managers said her name with a certain warmth. “Now that,” they’d say, “is commitment.”

She got passed over three promotion cycles in a row.

Meanwhile a colleague nobody would have called a hard worker, out the door at five, famously unreachable on Friday afternoons, kept moving up. He skipped meetings. He answered emails once a day, sometimes with one line. It offended me back then, watching him rise while she drowned in gold stars. It felt like proof the game was rigged.

It took me years, and leaving that world entirely, to understand what I’d actually been looking at. The game wasn’t rigged. It was just scoring something different than what she was doing. She was doing the visible work. He was doing the scary work. And every field, every single one, quietly runs on that split.

The short answer, before the long one: hardworking people stay broke because they fill their hours with work that cannot be rejected, and income only ever follows work that can. Everything below is that one sentence, lived.

Every industry has its own version of hiding

The pattern, once you finally see it, cannot be unseen. In every line of work there’s a category of activity that is safe, endless, socially praised, and almost completely disconnected from results.

In corporate, it’s meetings and instant replies. You can attend meetings forever. There is always another one. Nobody ever got fired in a meeting, and nobody ever got rich in one either.

For writers and creators, it’s engagement. Commenting, liking, supporting, restacking, being everywhere. I watch talented people spend three hours a day in comment sections, generous and exhausted and broke, and call it strategy.

For founders, it’s networking events and “exploring synergies” over coffees that lead nowhere slowly. For freelancers, it’s polishing the portfolio one more time before sending it to no one. For students, it’s a fourth highlighter pass over notes already read. For job seekers, it’s perfecting the CV instead of messaging the human who could hire them. And for almost everyone alive, it’s research: the infinitely renewable permission slip to not start yet.

Different costumes, same function. Because these activities all share three features. They’re comfortable, no one can reject you inside them. They’re endless, so you can never finish them and be forced to face what comes next. And they’re visible, so everyone around you nods along and calls you dedicated.

That’s what makes this the most socially acceptable way to stay broke. Other bad habits come with warnings. This one comes with applause.

How to tell real work from hiding

So how do you know whether what you’re doing right now is real work or a well-decorated hiding place? There’s a test. It stings.

Ask what the activity is postponing.

Because there’s always a second list. The short list. The scary one. Asking for the sale. Publishing the thing. Naming your price out loud, to a real person, without softening it into apology. Sending the pitch to the one publication or client that could actually change your year. Asking for the promotion directly instead of hoping the meetings get noticed. Telling your boss you’re leaving. Every career, every business, every project has a version of this list, and it’s rarely longer than three items. Three. The entire terrifying agenda of your next level usually fits on a sticky note.

The visible work is almost always an elegant way of not doing the sticky note. It feels productive precisely because it protects you. Nobody can reject you in a meeting you merely attended. Nobody can say no to a post you engaged with instead of an offer you made. Nobody can laugh at a price you never named. The comfort is the warning. If an activity can be done indefinitely without any risk of hearing the word no, it belongs on the suspicion list.

Reading this because someone forwarded it to you? They know you. I write one essay like this every week for go-getters building wealth and freedom on their own terms, no corporate ladder required. Join us free and next week’s lands in your inbox.

Get 50% off for 1 year

My own hiding place cost me a year

I’d love to tell this story from above, but I lived it from inside.

When I started writing online after fifteen years of corporate, I “built community” with the best of them. I was in everyone’s comments. I celebrated everyone’s wins. I replied to every single person who so much as breathed near my work. And I remember exactly why, though I couldn’t have admitted it at the time: making direct offers felt vulnerable and salesy, and being generous in public felt virtuous and safe. One of those activities could be rejected. The other could only be liked.

My engagement grew beautifully. My income did not move at all. Not slowly. Not at all.

The day I finally understood that my generosity was a hiding place was one of the more embarrassing and profitable days of my life. Nothing about my talent changed that day. Nothing about my audience changed. The only thing that changed is that I started doing the short list: naming what I sold, saying the price, asking directly, once in every handful of posts, without apology. The money that had been impossible for a year showed up within weeks. It had been waiting behind the ask the entire time.

I want to be careful here, because this is where people mishear me. The generosity wasn’t wrong. The relationships weren’t wasted. They became the soil everything grew in later. What was wrong was the ratio: one hundred percent soil, zero percent seed, and a farmer genuinely confused about the missing harvest.

Where is your version?

Take a second before the next section, because this article works only if it stops being about my colleague and starts being about your Tuesday. Tap the one that’s eating most of your hours right now, it takes one second and it tells me exactly what to write for you next:

I read these results like tea leaves, and the next essays come straight from them.

The economics of applause

Why does the visible work feel so irresistible? Because it pays instantly, just not in money.

Every meeting attended, every comment left, every hour of research produces an immediate hit of social credit. Someone nods. Someone likes. Someone says thank you. The scary work pays in the opposite pattern: it costs immediately, the fear, the exposure, the possible no, and pays later, sometimes much later, in money and freedom.

So we’re all standing at two vending machines. One dispenses applause now. One dispenses freedom later. And we keep feeding our best hours into the applause machine, then wondering why we’re rich in gold stars and short on options.

The people who get ahead, the annoying ones who seem to work less and gain more, are not luckier and are rarely smarter. They’ve simply inverted the ratio. They do the shortest defensible version of the visible work, and they do the sticky note first, while everyone else does the visible work all day and promises themselves the scary list “once things calm down.”

Things never calm down. That is the design. Calm is not coming, and the belief that it is might be the most expensive belief you own.

What the short list looks like in real lives

Because “do the scary work” is easy to nod at and easy to misplace, let me make it concrete across a few lives I know well.

For the employee, the list is usually: ask for the raise with a number in the sentence, apply for the role you’re “not ready” for, and tell your manager what you actually want next. Not hint. Tell.

For the freelancer: raise your price with existing clients, not just new ones. Pitch the three dream clients you’ve been saving for “when the portfolio is ready.” Send the invoice without the apologetic paragraph.

For the mother rebuilding a career or a business in the cracks of the day, and I write this one from experience: the list is often a single item. Show the thing to someone who can pay for it. The course half-built, the service almost defined, the newsletter written but never sold from. The hiding place is “finishing.” The ask is showing it now, at eighty percent, to a real buyer.

For the creator: name what you sell in public, once in every handful of posts, at full price, without the discount reflex.

Notice that not one item on any of these lists takes longer than an afternoon. The visible work takes months and can’t be rejected. The short list takes an afternoon and can. That asymmetry is the whole secret, and it’s why the people who act on it seem to move in fast-forward.

The one-quarter rule: how much of your work should be able to get rejected

The operating rule I run my whole business through now, and teach, goes like this. Roughly one quarter of your working effort should be direct asks. Offers made. Prices named. Pitches sent. Requests stated plainly to a human who has the power to say yes or no.

The test at the end of each week takes ten seconds: did anything I did this week have the possibility of being rejected? If the answer is no, I didn’t work that week. I performed work, in front of an audience that would have applauded me all the way to nowhere.

The other three quarters can stay, and should. The craft, the learning, the relationships, the generosity. Those matter enormously. They’re the muscle. But muscle without a moment of asking is a gym you never leave. You just get stronger and stronger at staying in the same place.

If a whole quarter feels violent to you right now, start smaller but start dated: one ask this week. One. A named price, a sent pitch, a direct question to a decision-maker. Put it in the calendar like a meeting, because unlike your meetings, this one pays.

Share

This post has bonus content for paid subscribers. Visible is not valuable. Applause is not income. And the work everyone approves of is usually the work that changes nothing, precisely because approval was the point of it.

Your version of the scary list exists. You already know at least one thing on it. You felt it flicker while reading, that small internal flinch around a specific name, a specific number, a specific unsent thing. You’ve been doing something respectable instead of it, possibly for months, possibly with excellent metrics to show for the hiding.

The woman from my old office never did find out what the game was scoring. Last I heard she was still first online every morning, still admired, still waiting. I think about her more than she’d guess. Not with judgment. With the specific tenderness you feel for a person doing everything right inside the wrong game, because I was her, for years, with better branding.

You don’t have to be. The list is three items long. href="/__u/howwegrowtoday.substack.com/p/retirement-is-the-worst-financial?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share">Share

We call this “the responsible plan.” It is the only financial product where you pay with life and get paid in leftovers, and the marketing has been so good for so long that questioning it sounds unhinged.

So let’s be unhinged for twelve minutes.

An invention with a birthday

Retirement feels eternal, like harvest or marriage. It isn’t. It has a birthday and a marketing department.

The modern retirement system was invented in 1889 by Otto von Bismarck, who offered German workers a state pension starting at age 70, at a time when the average worker didn’t live to see it. Read that twice: the product was designed so that most customers would die before collecting. It was never a promise of golden years. It was a pressure valve, priced to rarely pay out.

Then the twentieth century turned it into a story: work hard, defer everything, and at the end there’s a beach. The story worked because for one brief historical window (roughly one generation, in a handful of countries, with defined-benefit pensions and affordable houses) it was approximately true.

That window closed. The story kept running.

Retirement is a 130-year-old product still being sold with a 70-year-old brochure.

The three failures nobody puts in the brochure

Failure 1: The math. The deal assumes forty years of uninterrupted contributions, markets that cooperate, and a life that doesn’t interrupt. Real lives interrupt. And the target itself keeps inflating: the number that meant freedom for your parents is a down payment now. Millions of people are running a forty-year program toward a finish line that moves eleven meters for every ten they run.

Failure 2: The psychology. Here’s the twist the industry never mentions: the people who DO reach the number mostly can’t spend it. Study after study, video after viral video of retirees confessing the same thing: after four decades of practicing scarcity, the muscle that spends without guilt has atrophied. They hoard through their seventies and die with the pile intact. The product’s biggest success stories never consume the product.

Forty years of practicing “not yet” does not produce a person capable of “now.”

Failure 3: The identity. Ask the recently retired what shocked them. It’s rarely money. It’s the silence. The calendar that no one wants anything from. Work, for all its indignities, answered three questions daily: where do I go, what do I do, who needs me. Retirement cancels all three overnight and replaces them with golf. The epidemic of post-retirement depression is not a personal weakness. It’s a design flaw.

The product fails if you don’t reach the number, fails if you reach it and can’t spend it, and fails if you spend it and discover the beach was never the point.

The misdiagnosis

Now, the important part. Why does the product exist at all?

Retirement is not the dream. Retirement is the painkiller. The actual condition being treated is this: most work is an arrangement people need to recover from. Rented hours, surrendered calendars, someone else’s thermostat. OF COURSE the endpoint of that is escape. If your Mondays require an exit fantasy, the fantasy will be sold to you, at forty years and six percent annually.

But watch the people who own their work instead of renting it out. The writers, the founders, the craftsmen, the woman with the small fierce business serving people she chose. Notice something? They don’t retire. Not because they can’t. Because the thing everyone else is saving to escape is the thing they’ve already built their life inside.

Nobody retires from a life they designed. Retirement is the refund you demand for a life you didn’t.

That reframe changes the entire financial question. The goal was never “stop working at 65.” The goal was always “stop renting as soon as possible.” Those are wildly different projects with wildly different price tags:

Escaping work forever requires a fortune, because it must replace your income passively, permanently, inflation-adjusted, till death.

Escaping the ARRANGEMENT requires something much smaller: an owned income. A few thousand a month from an asset that’s yours (an audience, a product, a skill sold directly) doesn’t just supplement the pension math. It replaces the entire premise. Work you’d do anyway, at hours you chose, from a place you picked, is not the thing you save forty years to flee.

(One paragraph of receipts, then back to principles: I watched this math flip in my own life. Fifteen corporate years of dutiful deferring, then two years of building a newsletter and products I own. The owned version already out-earns the rented one, and here’s the part relevant to this letter: the desire to “someday stop” evaporated. Turns out I never wanted to stop working. I wanted to stop renting.)

Temperature check

[POLL] What’s your honest retirement plan?

The classic: save hard, exit at 65-ish

Hoping it works out, trying not to look

Building income I own so the question changes

I plan to work forever, by design, at things I love

The objections, taken seriously

“Compounding is real. Starting early matters.” Completely true, and nothing here says drain the fund. Keep the investments. This is not either/or. It’s an audit of what the fund is FOR. If it’s for optionality, wonderful. If it’s the sole exit from a life you wouldn’t otherwise choose, the fund isn’t a plan, it’s a hostage payment scheduled for your seventies.

“Not everyone can love their work. Someone has to do the hard jobs.” Also true, and this letter isn’t addressed to everyone. It’s addressed to the specific person reading a newsletter about ownership: skilled, experienced, employable, sitting on expertise someone would pay for directly. For that person, “I have no alternative” stopped being true several years ago. What remains is habit wearing a realism costume.

“Isn’t ‘never retire’ just glorifying hustle?” The opposite. Hustle is renting your hours to a fantasy of stopping. This is the slower, calmer project of building work that doesn’t require an exit. Fifteen owned hours can be more restful than a rented sabbatical, because rest isn’t the absence of work. It’s the absence of dread.

Subscribe now

The portfolio nobody manages

Everyone tracks one account: the money. But the retirement question is actually funded by four accounts, and the money is the only one that can’t buy back the others:

Financial capital: the savings. Necessary, worshipped, and the only account with an entire industry reminding you about it.

Skill capital: what you can do that people pay for. Compounds with use, decays in a niche of one employer. The most under-audited asset of the four: most people’s skills are worth several times their salary on the open market and have simply never been listed for sale.

Audience capital: who knows you can do it. The newest asset class and the great equalizer, because it converts skill capital into income without an employer’s permission, at any age. It is also the only account that makes the other three optional to touch.

Meaning capital: the reason to get up, independent of the badge. The account whose bankruptcy causes the post-retirement crash, and the only one that cannot be bought retroactively at any price.

The traditional plan maxes account one and quietly liquidates the other three, then acts surprised at the outcome.

A rich retirement with poor meaning is just a well-funded waiting room.

The alternative plan is boring and available: keep the investments, but spend this decade converting some skill capital into audience capital, so income becomes something you own rather than something you’re granted. The finish line stops moving the moment you stop running toward one.

Somewhere today, someone deferred a life again and called it planning.

But the endpoint of a well-designed life is not escape.

There is nothing to escape from.

Ana

If a line here hit something true, restack it with the line quoted; that’s how this reaches the people still paying the hostage fee. And in the comments: what would you keep doing even if you never had to? I read everything.

Share

P.S. Building the owned income that changes this whole equation is exactly what I’m doing with 30 women this summer inside The 6-Figures Newsletter Bootcamp: seven weeks, live, turning what you already know into an offer, a launch, and income you own before September. 250+ women are on the waitlist for 30 seats. href="/__u/howwegrowtoday.substack.com/p/the-middle-class-isnt-dying-its-being?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share">Share

Here is what almost nobody says plainly: the middle class was never an income level. It was a price. The price of a specific basket of goods (housing, education, healthcare, retirement) measured in one unit: years of ordinary salary.

And the price changed.

Not the story. The story still runs everywhere: study, work, save, arrive. The price changed. The same bundle that cost one ordinary salary now costs, depending on your city, two salaries, or two salaries plus debt, or two salaries plus debt plus a miracle in the housing market timed before you were old enough to vote.

This is why an entire generation feels crazy. They’re following the map precisely and arriving nowhere, so they assume the failure is personal. Millions of people privately concluding “I must be bad with money” simultaneously is not a coincidence of character flaws.

When everyone following the map gets lost in the same place, the problem is the map.

What actually got repriced

Look at where the money goes and the pattern is impossible to unsee. The things that got cheap are the things that don’t build a life: screens, clothes, gadgets, entertainment, calories. The things that exploded are the four pillars the middle class deal was made of: the house, the degree, the healthcare, the retirement.

Cheap dopamine, expensive foundations. You can furnish an entire apartment for a month’s salary and can’t buy the apartment with a decade of them.

The result is a generation that LOOKS rich by their grandparents’ standards (phones, flights, food delivery) and IS poor by the only measure that matters: how many months could you stop working before the structure collapses? That number, for most dual-income professional households, is embarrassingly small. The bundle got heavier while the grip got weaker.

The old poverty was having nothing. The new poverty is having everything except a margin.

The trap of playing the old game harder

Watch what people do when a game stops paying out: they play it harder. More overtime at the job whose raises trail inflation. A second degree to compete for the same repriced bundle. Cutting the coffee, the famous coffee, as if the gap between salaries and houses were made of cappuccinos.

This is the critical error, and it deserves its own line:

The old deal didn’t fail because people worked too little. It failed because one income stream, owned by someone else, stopped being enough to buy the bundle.

Read the repriced world through that lens and the response becomes obvious. Not “work harder inside the single stream.” Not even “spend less around it.” The response is structural:

The old middle class had one income and stability. The new middle class has multiple incomes and owns at least one of them.

That’s the entire repricing, from the other side. The deal your parents had was employment plus time. The deal that works now is employment plus ownership. The job stops being the whole plan and becomes what it honestly is: one income stream, the funding round for the streams you own.

Subscribe now

The ownership ladder (what “owning a stream” actually means)

“Own an income” sounds like founder cosplay. It isn’t. There’s a ladder, and the first rungs are absurdly accessible:

Rung 1: Sell a skill directly. The same expertise your employer buys wholesale, sold retail to even one client, changes your relationship with every paycheck. Not because of the money. Because of the proof: the salary is a price someone chose, not the price you’re worth.

Rung 2: Package the skill. A workshop, a guide, a template, a small product. Now the skill sells without your hours attached. This rung is where the time-for-money link, the load-bearing wall of the old deal, quietly breaks.

Rung 3: Own the audience. A list of people who chose to hear from you. This is the rung that changes the math permanently, because it makes rungs 1 and 2 repeatable on demand. It’s also the only asset class in history with an entry price of zero and no landlord.

(Receipts paragraph, briefly: this ladder isn’t theory to me. Fifteen years of corporate salary bought exactly what the repriced world sells: comfort minus margin. Two years of climbing these rungs, a newsletter past 80,000 readers, products from $27 to $797, built alongside life with a baby, out-earned the salary and, more to the point, changed WHO SETS THE PRICE. That’s the variable the old deal never let you touch.)

The middle class your parents had was granted. The one that exists now is built. Unfair, and true, and the truth is more useful than the fairness.

Temperature check

The objections, taken seriously

“This is just survivorship bias. Most side businesses fail.” Most side businesses fail because they’re started as businesses: inventory, ads, logos, risk. The ladder above starts as income, not enterprise: sell a skill you demonstrably have to a person who demonstrably needs it. The failure rate of “help someone with the thing you’re already paid to do” is not a startup statistic.

“I don’t have time. The job takes everything.” True, and worth saying with compassion: the repriced world consumes exactly enough of you that fixing your position feels impossible. But the honest accounting is this: the old deal’s hours bought security. The new deal’s hours buy recovery. Fifteen hours a week redirected from recovery to ownership is not hustle. It’s the minimum viable renovation of a deal that expired.

“Isn’t this just telling individuals to fix a systemic problem?” The system should change; wages, housing, all of it. And you should not wait for it. Both are true. The repricing took forty years to happen and will not un-happen before your mortgage does. Structural anger and personal strategy are not opposites. One votes. The other builds.

The new arithmetic

The old deal’s math: one salary × forty years = the bundle. That equation is dead; mourn it briefly.

The new math is smaller and stranger: the gap between a repriced life and a margin is usually one owned income stream of a few thousand a month. Not a startup exit. Not passive-income mythology. One skill, packaged, sold to a modest audience, repeatedly.

A thousand people who trust you. One offer that solves one expensive problem. A $97 product bought by 100 of them is $9,700 per launch. Twice a year. Alongside the job, on 15 owned hours a week. That’s not the fantasy version of the numbers. That’s the boring version, and boring is what makes it real.

The bundle got repriced. Fine. Reprice yourself.

Somewhere today, someone is cutting their fourth coffee of the week and wondering why the map keeps lying.

The map is fine. It’s just a map of a country that no longer exists.

Draw your own.

Ana

If one line here named something you’ve felt but not said, restack it with the line quoted; the people gaslighting themselves about the map need to find this.

Share

And in the comments: what did your parents buy on one salary that would take you two? My business did $7figures this year on 2 hours a day, but I’ve also been the person at zero: I left 15 years of corporate with no plan, and it took me five years and several failed ventures to earn my first own dollars. I know exactly which of those five years were wasted and why.

So here’s the plan I’d run today, knowing what I know. Ninety days, three phases, every move numbered.

Steal all of it.

First, the three rules the plan runs on

Rule 1: One stream. One audience. One offer.

At zero, diversification is self-sabotage with better branding. You get rich by focusing. You stay rich by diversifying. Different steps.

Rule 2: At zero, YOU are the investment.

Not index funds, not crypto, not the $400 emergency fund optimized to death. The highest-return asset you own is a skill people pay for, aimed properly. Every hour and dollar goes there first.

Rule 3: Sell embarrassingly early.

My wasted years had one common thread: building before selling. Galleries, projects, platforms... all built first, validated never. The plan below sells in week 6, before anything feels ready. Especially before.

Phase 1 (Days 1-30): Deploy the scar tissue

Move 1: I’d pick the ONE topic where my experience is deepest and people already pay. Not the passion project. Not the fresh start. The scar tissue. For me that’s marketing and monetization; for you it’s whatever colleagues DM you about. The market has been telling you your topic for years. Believe it.

Move 2: I’d start a newsletter on day one, ugly. No logo week, no branding month, no name agonizing. (I’ve watched people spend six weeks on a name for a newsletter with zero readers. The name is not the bottleneck. It never was.)

Move 3: I’d publish two pieces a week: one deep, one fast. The deep one proves judgment. The fast one (a breakdown, a teardown, a mistake confessed) earns shares. Every piece ends with a question, because replies are the entire strategy right now.

Move 4: I’d spend 30 minutes a day being useful in public. Thoughtful comments and notes where my people already gather. Not promoting. Answering. At zero, generosity is the only distribution you can afford, and conveniently, it’s also the best one.

Target by day 30: a few hundred subscribers who reply. Not thousands. A small list that talks beats a big list that scrolls.

Share

Phase 2 (Days 31-60): Find the one problem

Move 5: I’d read every reply like it’s market research, because it is. Somewhere in weeks 3 to 6, the same problem starts appearing in different words. That repetition is the business. I’d stop looking for ideas and start counting frequencies.

Move 6: I’d ask the list directly. One email: “What’s the thing you’re most stuck on with [topic]? Hit reply.” Then, and this is the move everyone skips, I’d get on 5 to 10 short calls with the people who answered. Not to sell. To listen to the exact WORDS they use. Those words become the offer’s name, promise, and sales copy. Copywriting is mostly eavesdropping done politely.

Move 7: I’d design ONE offer that solves that one problem in one clear timeframe. A live 2-day workshop or a 30-day sprint, priced $97 to $197. Not a course empire. Not a membership. One promise, one price, one date.

where would YOU be starting from?

Phase 3 (Days 61-90): Sell before ready

Move 8: I’d announce the offer to my tiny list with a founding price. Five emails across launch week. It will feel like too much. It’s not; most people miss most emails. The founding-members frame is honest at zero: they get the lowest price ever, I get the testimonials.

Move 9: I’d run it live, imperfectly, and over-deliver like my life depends on it. Because it does: at zero, the first 10 customers aren’t revenue, they’re the marketing department. Their results and words fund everything after.

Move 10: I’d immediately run it AGAIN. Same offer, improved, new price tier, next month. Not a new thing. The same thing, better and louder. This is the step where past-me always self-sabotaged out of boredom, and the step where the current business was actually built. Boring makes money. Variety makes work.

Day 90 realistic scorecard, run honestly: a talking list, one validated offer, the first $1-3K earned, and (the part no one prices) the permanent rewiring that happens when strangers pay you. From there, $10K months are not a miracle. They’re repetition with growing volume: same system, run again each month, louder, to a list that compounds.

That’s the plan. No ads, no funnels, no 12-hour days, no waiting until it feels ready.

It never feels ready. Sell anyway.

If you want to run this plan WITH me instead of alone (offer design, buyer identification, launch, in 30 days) that’s exactly what 10K Launch Lab does. Bring the scar tissue. I’ll bring the system, and 830+ wins say it works.

Below the line for paid subscribers: The Zero Playbook, expanded. The week-by-week execution calendar for all 10 moves (what to do each Monday morning), the 5 listening-call questions that extract an offer from any conversation, my exact founding-launch email sequence structure (all 5 emails, outlined beat by beat), and the three day-30 diagnostics that tell you whether to proceed, adjust the topic, or adjust the audience. If you’re at zero or restarting, this is the map I paid five years for.

Subscribe now

The Zero Playbook, Expanded

The week-by-week calendar

an engineering department

Lifestyle inflation is usually explained as a character flaw: people are vain, spending creeps, discipline fails. Comforting, and wrong. The creep is engineered, and it runs on three lawful-seeming mechanisms:

Mechanism one: spending is social, and your society upgrades with you. Every raise, every promotion, every better job relocates you into a reference group that spends more. The neighborhood, the colleagues, the school gate, the LinkedIn feed. You never feel richer, because the people around you got more expensive at exactly your pace. Wealth is always defined by the local average, and the local average is a moving walkway.

Mechanism two: the anesthesia budget. A large fraction of professional-class spending isn’t consumption. It’s compensation: purchases that treat the life the income requires. The delivery because there’s no energy to cook. The holiday that’s really a recovery ward. The upgrades that whisper “this is why I do it.” The harder the job, the bigger the anesthesia line, which produces the quietly vicious loop: the income creates the exhaustion that consumes the income.

Half of lifestyle inflation is just the cost of numbing the lifestyle.

Mechanism three: fixed costs ratchet. Variable spending (dinners, gadgets) gets all the moral attention, but it’s the fixed commitments that imprison: the mortgage sized to the peak salary, the car payments, the subscriptions, the school, the everything-on-autopay. Each upgrade is reversible in theory and humiliating to reverse in practice, so the floor only rises. And a high fixed floor is the exact definition of fragility: it converts your entire income into a hostage of its continuation.

Add the three together and you get the professional-class signature: the more they earn, the less they can afford to stop.

Margin, the invisible metric

Here’s the reframe this entire letter exists for. The financial metric that actually predicts freedom, calm, and options is not income. It never was. It’s margin: the gap between what comes in and what the life requires, measured in one brutal unit:

How many months could you stop, or say no, before the structure collapses?

Watch what margin buys that income can’t. The ability to leave the bad boss without a spreadsheet of terror. To take the risk, the sabbatical, the pivot. To negotiate from “I don’t need this” instead of from fear, which is, not coincidentally, the only position from which negotiations are won. To absorb the surprise (the illness, the layoff, the divorce, the opportunity) as an event instead of a catastrophe.

Income is how fast money arrives. Margin is whether you’re free. The professional class optimized the first and mortgaged the second.

And notice the dark elegance of the trap: a person with a high income and no margin is MORE controllable than a person with a modest income and high margin. The golden handcuffs aren’t a metaphor. They’re a compensation strategy, and they work precisely because the lifestyle ratchet does the locking voluntarily.

The person with margin can say the most powerful word in professional life (”no”) for free. The person without it pays for every no in dread.

The second lever (because cutting has a floor)

The standard advice ends here: spend less, budget harder, cancel things. Necessary, and insufficient, because cutting has a floor (the life still has to be lived) while the anxiety has no ceiling.

The lever nobody’s parents taught: margin has two sides, and the income side is no longer fixed. One additional stream, owned rather than granted (a skill sold directly, knowledge packaged, an audience built on 15 hours a week), does something no raise accomplishes: it de-concentrates the risk. The household stops being a single point of failure. A few thousand owned monthly income doesn’t sound like wealth, but run it through the margin math: it can double or triple the “months before collapse” number, which is the number your nervous system actually reads at 3am.

A raise increases the income the treadmill absorbs. An owned stream increases the margin the treadmill can’t touch, because it isn’t attached to the employer, the commute, or the anesthesia budget that job requires.

The rich-feeling and the free-feeling turn out to be different purchases. Almost everyone is buying the first with money meant for the second.

Temperature check

The objections, taken seriously

“Costs are structural. Housing and childcare, not lattes.” Largely true, and it’s why this letter hasn’t mentioned coffee once. The fixed-cost ratchet IS the structural story. But structural pressure makes margin more urgent, not less relevant: when the floor is high and rising, the only two moves left are ruthless prioritization of the fixed lines and the second stream. Fatalism is the one strategy with a guaranteed outcome.

“Life is short. I refuse to live joylessly for a spreadsheet.” Agreed, entirely, and look closer at what’s actually joyless: the margin-less life IS the joyless one; its pleasures are anesthesia consumed under a hum of dread. Margin isn’t deferred living. It’s what makes the pleasures optional rather than medicinal, which is the difference between a glass of wine and a prescription.

“Isn’t an extra income stream just more work for someone already exhausted?” In hours, briefly, yes. In energy, no, and this is the strangest finding of everyone who does it: owned work draws from a different tank than rented work. Fifteen hours building something yours often refunds more energy than it costs, because agency is a stimulant and dread is the actual exhaustion. The anesthesia budget shrinks accordingly, which is where the first margin appears before a single sale is made.

Somewhere today, someone got the raise, upgraded the car within the month, and moved their collapse date not one single day.

The salary was never the score.

The margin was.

Ana

If a line here read your bank account without permission, restack it with the line quoted; the person scoffing at six-figure broke-ness needs the mechanism, not the mockery.

Share

Comments: what did your last raise actually buy? Then factories. Then software. Then platforms.

Each time, the pattern is identical: a new form of leverage appears, the majority panics about what it destroys, and a small minority quietly asks what it multiplies. The panic is always louder. The minority always wins.

AI is this generation’s transfer, and it’s happening on a compressed timeline, in public, with commentary. Turn on any podcast: men in expensive chairs debating the end of the middle class. Millions of views on the death of “safe” careers. Fear is the last truly renewable resource, and it’s being harvested at industrial scale.

The fear isn’t stupid. Jobs are being repriced in real time. Categories of work our parents called secure are quietly becoming line items. If the twenty-year plan is “keep doing what I do, the way I do it,” nervousness is the rational response.

We are living through the largest renegotiation of what human time is worth since the assembly line.

But here’s what the expensive chairs keep missing. Everyone is asking the same question:

“Will AI take my job?”

Almost nobody is asking the question that actually determines what happens to them:

“What do I own that AI can be trained ON?”

Read both again, slowly. The first casts you as the acted-upon: the raw material, the line item, the cost to be optimized. The second casts you as the owner of something scarce, deciding what to do with it.

Same technology. Same decade. Two different futures, and the fork between them is not talent, money, youth, or code.

It’s which question you’re asking.

Renters and owners

Strip away the headlines and the divide forming underneath is old, not new. It is not humans versus machines. It never was.

It’s people who rent out their hours versus people who own systems.

<a class="image-link image2 is a direct trade of hours for money, AI is genuinely threatening, because AI is, at its core, a machine for making hours cheaper. It will do to knowledge-hours what the tractor did to field-hours and the spreadsheet did to rooms full of human calculators. Being angry at it works exactly as well as it worked for the men with scythes.

Flip the position and the same machine flips with it. If you own a system (an audience, a method, a product, a documented process), AI is not the replacement.

It’s the first employee you never had to hire.

Doesn’t sleep. Doesn’t quit. Doesn’t need the explanation twice. Works for the price of a coffee subscription. And it comes with one catch, the catch that decides the whole game:

It is only as valuable as what it’s trained on. Generic in, generic out.

AI is catastrophic for people who sell time and a gift for people who own systems. The entry ticket to the second group is not code. It’s expertise.

The commodity trap

“But if AI can do everything,” says the sensible objection, “why would anyone need any individual expert at all?”

Because generic AI is a commodity, and commodities converge to worthless.

Ask a general chatbot about pricing and you get the Wikipedia of pricing: correct, comprehensive, balanced, and useless at 11pm in front of a checkout page, scared to type $500. What’s needed in that moment isn’t information. It’s judgment. A specific voice that knows the specific trap, because it’s been in it, and says: that number is fear, add a zero, now build the offer that earns it.

Here is the hierarchy that decides who gets paid in the next decade:

Information was valuable until the internet made it free. Answers were valuable until AI made them instant. Judgment (knowing which answer applies to which person in which situation, and in what order) is the last scarce asset. And judgment doesn’t come from the averaged internet. It comes from a decade of pattern recognition, the launches that flopped, the clients that surprised you, the sequence found by breaking three others.

That data exists in exactly one place.

The moat was never the technology. The moat is the decade you spent becoming you.

Which produces the single most important sentence of this letter:

Your expertise is training data that only you own.

The averaged internet trained the models everyone has. Your unaveraged decade trains the one nobody else can build. Not the biggest AI lab in the world, not the twenty-two-year-old “automation agency” in your DMs. The bottleneck isn’t compute. It’s lived pattern recognition, and you’re holding it.

(One paragraph of receipts, because claims need collateral: this is not theory to me. Two years ago I was a corporate marketer with zero digital income. The newsletter came first, past 80,000 subscribers within a year and a half. Then products, $27 to $5,797. Then the strange part: AI tools trained on my own frameworks that score offers, structure launches, and answer questions in my voice, some free, some paid, all working while I don’t. Built without writing a line of code. If a non-technical marketer can productize her judgment, the excuse inventory gets thin.)

The leverage stack

Put the pieces in order and you get the actual playbook of this transfer, the one the fear economy never explains:

Level 0: Hours. You do the work. Income stops when you stop. This is where 95% of skilled people live, including brilliant ones, because nobody told them the building had other floors.

Level 1: Audience. Your knowledge, written down, distributed. The same explanation, given once, read by thousands. Writing is the first machine that clones your thinking.

Level 2: Products. Your method, packaged. The explanation becomes a system someone can buy without booking you. Income detaches from calendar.

Level 3: Trained AI. Your judgment, interactive. The method now asks the follow-up question, catches the mistake, adapts to the person, at 3am, in your voice, at zero marginal cost.

Each level is built FROM the one below it. You cannot train an AI on judgment you never wrote down, and you cannot write down judgment for an audience you never built. Which is why “learn AI” is terrible advice and “package your expertise, then multiply it” is the actual sequence.

Machines get cheaper every year. Judgment gets more expensive. Position yourself accordingly.

Temperature check

The objections, taken seriously

“AI makes things up.” Unconstrained AI improvises, which is exactly why the value sits in constraint. A tool built on a specific checklist, specific rules, specific boundaries is not a slot machine. It’s a script with flexibility. You’re not signing your name on the model. You’re signing it on the method, which was always yours.

“People want a human.” They do, and they still get one. The tool absorbs the fiftieth repetition of the same explanation, the 2am panic, the “quick question” that eats a Tuesday. It’s not a replacement for presence. It’s a moat around it. The expert whose method answers clients between sessions isn’t less human. She’s less exhausted, and exhaustion was never the humanity.

“Isn’t this automating myself out of my own business?” Trust cannot be automated. Only the queue in front of it can. Free tools bring people in; paid tools serve the people you’d never have hours for; and the people who want the real, live expert still want the real, live expert, at prices the tools make easier to justify.

“I’m too late.” Everyone is consuming AI. A vanishingly small number of experts are packaging their own judgment into it. In most niches, for most specific audiences, that seat is still empty. It will not stay empty out of politeness.

The Training Data Test

The free gift, before the paywall: four questions that locate the trainable expertise in any career. Pen, paper, honesty.

The Repetition Question. What explanation have you given so many times you could recite it angry, tired, or asleep? Repetition means there’s a method, even if it’s never been written down.

The 2am Question. What do your clients, colleagues, or friends need at the exact moments you’re not available? The gap between their panic and your office hours is the product.

The Disagreement Question. Where does your advice differ from your field’s standard advice? Generic AI gives standard advice by definition. All of your value lives in the deviation. Name three things “everyone says” that you tell people to ignore.

The Checklist Question. When you evaluate anything in your domain (a plan, a text, a decision, a budget), what do you check, and in what order? That invisible mental checklist, extracted, is 80% of an AI tool. The other 20% is a weekend.

Two specific answers or more, and you’re sitting on trainable expertise. The only remaining question is whether you package it or keep renting it out one meeting at a time.

The wave arrives either way. You can be the job it replaces or the expertise it amplifies.

Same water. Different swimmer.

Ana

If one line here landed, restack it with the line quoted; that’s how this reaches people before the wave does. And in the comments, answer the Repetition Question: what have you explained a thousand times? Someone will read your answer and want to pay for it.

P.S. Packaging expertise into offers, launches, and yes, your own trained AI tool is exactly what I’m teaching live this summer inside The 6-Figures Newsletter Bootcamp: seven weeks, 30 women, me in your corner. The waitlist gets everything first: a live kickoff call July 7 where I demo this exact system, then doors open on that call, before the public. 250+ women, 30 seats.
<div Twelve hours in the car. Two dogs, a 9-month-old, and what felt like our entire life in bags wedged into every gap a human body wasn't already occupying. Eva did the thing babies do where they sleep through the dramatic mountain scenery and wake up, furious, the second you find a parking spot.

We got in. We unpacked half of it. And then I sat on the floor of a half-set-up kitchen, in a country whose language I'm still learning, surrounded by labels I can't fully read, and thought: this is exactly how I used to feel about my own business.

Because for a long time, I thought the answer was more.

More posts. More platforms. More threads and reels and carousels and "let me just quickly batch 30 Notes before the baby wakes up." I had a content calendar that looked like a NASA launch schedule and the energy of someone who had not slept since 2024.

And the wild part? It mostly worked. Numbers went up. I was visible. I was, on paper, doing everything right.

Share

I was also one missed nap away from quietly deleting the whole thing and going back to corporate, where at least burnout came with dental.

Here is what nobody tells you when they sell you "be everywhere": being everywhere is a tax. You pay it in attention, in originality, in the part of your brain that used to have good ideas in the shower and now just rehearses captions. Spread thin is not a strategy. It is a slow leak.

So I stopped. Not because I'm zen. Because I was tired. And tiredness, it turns out, is an excellent editor.

Greece is teaching me the same lesson, just slower and with more cheese involved. When you move somewhere new, you have two options. You can spend your energy fighting everything you don't understand. Why is the pharmacy closed at this hour, why does this form need a stamp, why is nobody answering the phone (they're at lunch, the lunch is sacred, leave them alone). Or you can stop arguing with the place and start noticing what already works, and lean your whole weight on that.

We're learning the language. We're learning the local rhythms. And mostly we're learning to stop pushing against the things that were never going to move and to use the things that quietly, reliably do. The neighbour who knows everyone. The one shop that's always open. The rhythm of the day instead of the rhythm we brought with us.

That is the entire strategy. Stop fighting what you don't understand. Leverage what works. It's how you survive a new country with a baby and two dogs, and it is, weirdly, exactly how you fix a business that's drowning in content.

Which brings me to the lemon.

One lemon, a whole jug

You don't make lemonade by squeezing twelve lemons into a thimble. You take one good lemon and you add water. A lot of water. One concentrated thing, generously distributed, and suddenly there's enough for everybody at the table.

Most creators are out here trying to grow a lemon orchard. Twelve trees. Twelve harvests. Twelve completely different things to keep alive. And they wonder why they're exhausted and the jug is still empty.

You don't need more lemons. You have a lemon. You have several, probably, sitting in old drafts and replies you fired off in two minutes that were better than anything you "produced" on purpose.

The lemon is the idea. The work. The thing that's actually yours.

The water is distribution. It's the ecosystem of places your idea shows up without you personally being there, sweating, performing, starting from zero every single morning.

The mistake we make is thinking the lemon is the hard part. It's not. The lemon is the easy part. You're full of lemons. The skill, the thing almost nobody builds on purpose, is the water.

The thing I'm not going to pretend

I'm not going to pretend distribution is some mystical force. It's a system. A boring, repeatable, deeply unsexy system that does the showing-up so you don't have to do it manually until your eye twitches.

The creators who look "lucky," who seem to be everywhere while clearly also having a life, are not producing more than you. I promise you they're producing less. They've just built an ecosystem where one lemon flavors the entire jug.

I'm going to show you exactly how I built mine. The specific moves, the places, the order I'd do them in if I were starting today with one baby, zero free time, and no patience for funnel theatre.

But first, a confession with a real number in it, because I think we owe each other those.

Subscribe

Casually. Apropos of nothing. Loud enough that you’d definitely catch it.

Then one night, Eva finally asleep, Stefan watching something with the subtitles on in the next room, I exported the actual data. All of it. Opens, clicks, the people who had ever replied, the people who had ever bought a single thing.

I sat there and felt my face go hot in an empty kitchen.

One list, 37,000 people, had a 93% never-opened-anything rate. Ninety-three. That’s not an audience, that’s a cemetery with my name on every headstone. The number of humans genuinely paying attention was a thin slice of the trophy number I’d been waving around at dinner parties. And the number who would have actually paid me money? You could seat them comfortably at a medium wedding.

Hundred thousand subscribers. I had built a stadium and forgotten to sell tickets. Or hot dogs. Or anything at all, really, except the warm feeling of telling people I owned a stadium.

So let’s have the conversation nobody invites you to. You write well. Possibly better than me, I’m not being humble. You’ve read the frameworks, you publish on a schedule a Swiss train would envy, you “add value” until your hands cramp. And your paid count is parked at six, two of whom share your last name.

Why won’t anyone pay you?

I have turned this over more than almost anything in my business. The answer is not the one you want. It’s also the only one that ever got me anywhere.

Subscribe now

Sentences are the cover charge. Nobody got rich on the cover charge.

People do not pay for sentences.

They don’t pay for your clean structure or your tidy little three-part framework or the fact that you, unlike the savages, know where a semicolon goes.

Good writing gets you let in the door. That’s its entire job. It is the cover charge. And I have never once seen a bar make rent on the cover charge.

What people actually open their wallet for is the feeling of being slightly less insane. The 11pm “oh, it’s not just me.” The Monday where they read your thing and decide to send the scary email after all. They pay because somewhere in your words they recognized themselves and it loosened something in their chest.

A flawless paragraph that makes a reader feel precisely nothing is worth precisely nothing. I have written hundreds of those. They were gorgeous. They were furniture in a house with no one living in it.

The how-to is where scared writers go to hide

Here is the move every clever person makes, and I made it harder than anyone.

We teach. We write the how-to, the “5 ways to,” the ultimate guide, the breakdown, the framework with the little arrows. It feels responsible. It feels like generosity. Look how much I know. Look how neatly I’ve stacked it.

Two problems.

First, a chatbot will now write a perfectly competent how-to on anything in about nine seconds, and it will do it at 3am without a nap, a snack, or a small existential crisis. If your whole offer is “information, but arranged nicely,” you have entered a knife fight against a machine that arranges things nicely for free, forever, and never once feels insecure about it. Bring a bigger knife. Or, better, leave the fight.

The second problem is quieter and it’s the one that actually mattered for me. Teaching is a hideout. As long as I’m explaining something to you, I never have to admit anything to you. I get to stand at the whiteboard with the marker instead of standing inside the story with my hands shaking. The whiteboard is safe. The whiteboard is also broke.

I went on about this in a video, the one where I argue that the Substack creators who’ll actually get rich in 2026 are the storytellers and not the strategists, and you can watch the whole rant here if you want it with my face on it.

The compressed version: the how-to era is wearing a toe tag. The story economy is what walked in to replace it. And most genuinely good writers are still polishing a skill for an era that already left.

Share

satisfied. That’ll do it, I thought. Now they’ll politely go away and I can have my quiet maternity leave with a clear conscience.

They said yes!

And the second they said yes, I felt sick.

Not happy-sick. Not pinch-me-sick. Actual dread. Within a day I had assembled a tidy little list of reasons I couldn’t possibly sell. They wouldn’t protect the soul of it. They’d strip out everything that made it mine. They’d turn it into something I’d be ashamed to have my name near.

And look, some of that was true. I’ll come back to which part was true, because it matters.

But the honest version is messier than the noble version. The honest version is this:

I had a number in my head for what I was allowed to be worth. And half a million dollars sat way, way above it.

So my brain did the thing brains do. It didn’t say “you’re scared.” It said “you have principles.” Much nicer story. Same outcome.

Does this resonate with you, btw?

I’d done the exact same thing for 15 years, just slower

Before the course business, before any of this, I spent 15 years in a corporate job.

I was good at it. I had the title. I had the salary that made people’s eyebrows go up at dinner. And the whole time, underneath the LinkedIn version of me, I wanted to build something of my own so badly it ached.

I didn’t leave. For 15 years I didn’t leave.

I told everyone it was the responsible choice. There was always a reason. The market. The timing. The “let me just hit this next milestone first.”

Here’s what I wouldn’t say out loud: I did not believe I could make that kind of money any other way. The salary wasn’t just money. It had quietly become my proof of what I was capable of earning. Leaving didn’t feel like a risk. It felt like volunteering to be worth less.

So I stayed somewhere I’d outgrown, for years longer than made any sense, because the version of “losing” I could see (the paycheck) felt more real than the version of “winning” I couldn’t see yet (the business).

Two completely different decisions. The job and the half-million. Fifteen years apart. Exact same glitch.

Your income has a thermostat, and somebody else set it

Here’s the thing I’ve come to believe after living both of those stories.

Most of us walk around with a number we’ve quietly decided we’re “the kind of person who makes.” Not a goal. A setting. Like a thermostat.

And the thermostat doesn’t care what you’re actually capable of. It cares about staying at temperature.

Go too far above your setting and something gets uncomfortable. You overspend. You self-sabotage. You find a moral reason to say no to half a million dollars. Drop too far below it and you panic, you scramble, you claw your way back to the number that feels like “you.”

I didn’t set my thermostat. Neither did you. We absorbed it. From what money felt like in the house we grew up in. From the things the adults around us said when the bills came. From whatever we decided, at seven years old, money “is” and what kind of people get to have it.

You did not write that script. But it is absolutely running your pricing.

This is why you keep underpricing (and don’t even feel it)

Stay with me, because this is the part that’s actually costing you money this week.

When most creators price an offer, they think they’re pricing the offer. They’re not. They’re pricing themselves. They’re quietly asking, “what can I imagine someone paying... me?” And then they set the price right under that.

The offer might be worth $500. The thermostat says $97. Guess which one ends up on the sales page.

You want to know how I can tell you’re underpriced? It’s that flinch.

The little jolt of “oh that’s too much, they’ll never pay that” when you imagine charging what the thing is actually worth. We treat that flinch like it’s market research. Like it knows something. It doesn’t. The flinch is just your thermostat noticing you’re about to walk into a warmer room.

I literally proved this to myself with the half-million. I picked the number that felt absurd. The number designed to make them say no. And the market looked at my “absurd” and said “sure.” My absurd was their reasonable. The gap between those two numbers was the exact size of my thermostat.

You have that same gap. I’d put money on it.

👉 Be honest with me: what’s actually capping your income right now? (I read every one of these, and they tell me what to build for you next.)

I undercharge. My offer is probably worth more than I’m charging.

I haven’t built the offer yet. The idea’s in my head, not in the world.

I’ve got the offer, I just can’t get people to actually pay.

I’m still in the job. Haven’t made the jump.

Okay. Here’s where I want to take you next, and I’m putting it behind the paywall on purpose. It’s the good stuff, and I want to do it just for the people who’ve decided this is worth investing in.

On the other side of this, I’m going to walk you through:

The four “money scripts” we run without realizing it, and how to spot which one is secretly writing your prices. (One of them looks exactly like being responsible. It’s the most expensive one.)

The two questions I now ask before I price anything or say no to any money. They take ten seconds and they’ve changed every number I’ve put out since.

The real reason I eventually didn’t sell. The part that was true, pulled apart from the part that was just fear in a nice outfit. And what I’d tell the version of me who panicked.

Plus, I’m dropping a full free workshop for paid subscribers at the very bottom. The kind I’d normally only run live.

If you’ve ever felt that flinch, the next part is for you.

Subscribe now

Eva didn’t exist yet. Stefan was asleep. And I was at the kitchen table answering a support email, after writing a newsletter, after fixing a broken checkout, after designing a graphic, after recording a lesson, after chasing an invoice.

I had left a fifteen-year corporate career to be free. To finally be my own boss.

And somewhere around that 11pm email, it landed on me like a piano.

I wasn’t free. I had just hired the worst boss I’d ever had.

Me.

I’d quit a boss I didn’t respect and replaced him with one who never let me leave, never once said “good job,” and called at every hour of the night. I told myself I owned a business. What I actually owned was a job. The kind with no sick days, no holidays, and nobody else on earth who could do it.

Then I read a book that explained, almost insultingly precisely, how I had done this to myself. It’s called The E-Myth Revisited, and it is about why most small businesses quietly strangle the very people who start them. It also handed me the map out.

That map is the only reason I now run a seven-figure business in about two hours a day, from a country I wasn’t born in, while a nine-month-old naps in the next room.

I want to give you the whole thing.

Here’s what’s in the rest of this piece:

The one fatal assumption almost everyone makes before they even start (it’s why being brilliant at your craft can be the exact thing that sinks you)

The three people fighting inside every founder, and the one who quietly runs your life into the ground

The three stages every business moves through, and the precise moment most of them die

The single shift that let me build something that runs without me, and how to install it before you burn out instead of after

The boring three-step system that is the real reason behind the two-hour workday

This is the piece I wish someone had slid across that kitchen table to me at 11pm. It lives behind the paywall, because it’s the actual operating manual, not the highlight reel. If you’ve ever felt like your own business is eating you alive, this is the one to unlock.

Get 90% off for 1 year
