This weekend was a “me” type of weekend. Some sans-kids festivities on the Saturday, followed by a relaxed and adventurous Sunday. We started at the “åpen hall” at Kåsen to burn off some thousand calories for the kids. But when my one kid made the other a human slingshot (true story) we saw our need to leave before any harm was done to other kids. So we went to magical Madland Hamn where my sister and I worked out in the Storm hut while the kids were running. On the way home, I was thinking I needed Line Gard eggs (no eggs like ‘em), so I looked up where the closest location was. And lo and behold it was Ystepikene. So we went there and were greeted by a cheese tasting board (yummmyy - we forgot our manners a little as it was so good) and great service. What a pleasant surprise and perfect Sunday.

The upcoming weekend is a good one. It is the perfect mix of everything for everyone. One of those that reminds me of my inner philosophy “there is always something to experience, no matter where you are”. If you are into machinery - check, music - check, art - check, physical activity - check, and friluft - check.

Sans kids

• Jean Brigitte`s Kabaret Klubb: This one sounds like such a fun Friday night: Stavanger’s Jean Brigitte is starting cabaret nights at Blyge Harry, with live jazz, comedy, costumes, feathers and plenty of drama. From 19:00. Ticketed. More info here.

Saturday

• Rennesøydagen at Vikevåg: A market day with stalls, activities, exhibitions, vintage boats, cars and tractors, plus the boat MS Rogaland is open to visitors. Sounds like a great set-up to me. From 11:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Stavanger Marathon: Marathon day takes over Stavanger with several distances and a kids' race, making it just as good an excuse to go cheer as to actually run. Heia heia! More info here.

• Tou 25år birthday celebration: The Stavanger “love or hate” institution is turning 25 years and inviting you to celebrate with helping making a giant chalk drawing accompanied by live music (sounds like a fitting celebration). There will be ice cream and performances too. And if the Stavanger weather does its thing, it will simply move indoors. From 13:00 and on. Free and no ticket required. More info here.

• Tekna opprydding: Stavanger Diving Club will be diving for trash along the coastline (below Tou) while you watch from land. A little adventure + doing something good at the same time, nothing better than that. From 11:00 to 13:00. Free but ticketed (and signups end today). More info here.

• Familiedag Skurve Quarry: If you get excited about BIG machines, this one is for you. The quarry at Skurve is opening up for a family day with machines in action and activities for the whole family. We did this last year and it was tons of fun for all of us. And you know I love an open day/behind-the-scenes anywhere. From 11:00 to 15:00. More info here.

Sunday

• Arty Party – Kunsthall Stavanger: Art party with performance, disco, workshop and lots of creative play where you can join in too. Free, no registration needed. From 12:00 to 14:00. More info here.

• Broken Column - Guided tour: You’ve probably walked/driven past them (the one in Valberget parking scares me every single time), but do you actually know the story behind them? Stavanger Art Museum is doing a 45-minute walking tour of Antony Gormley’s Broken Column, the 23 iron figures scattered around Stavanger. It starts at Fisketorget. From 14:00. Free, but ticketed. • Macbeth at Utstein Kloster: Ok, I’m the first to admit that Shakespeare is often a bit over my head (old English is a bit complicated for me), but this one sounds like an experience. Macbeth performed by the American Drama Group in the old monastery sounds like the fitting place to get even me on board. From 18:00 to 20:30. Ticketed. More info here.

The weekend

• Jæren Truckmeet: A whole bunch of trucks are meeting up in Skurve (yes same area as the quarry mentioned above) and it promises to have loads of trucks. On Saturday there will also be competitions, a car parade and plenty of big-machine action. Friday from 16:00 to 20:00 and Saturday from 11:00 to 18:00. Free and no ticket required. More info here.

• Natt i naturen - Brekko: This one sounds absolutely magical. Sleep outside at Brekko from Saturday to Sunday (with plenty of activities and pancakes), then wake up to a breakfast in the morning and activities for the day. Bring (or rent from frilager.no) your own hammock, tent or sleep under the stars. Free and no ticket required. From Saturday 17:00 to Sunday 16:00. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Trekronå. In my quest to be more in nature, this seems like a very comfortable and cool way to do it this fall. Tree houses tucked in the woods of Ogna within walking distance to the beach with a minispa (jacuzzi and sauna) available. Magical!

• Place worth a stop anytime: Bore Beach. Truth be told this place has always been a must see. Beautiful place to go for a walk from the nearby parking lot. But this summer it got a full-on upgrade as it now has its own beach club (!) with food and drinks. We went for a windy walk followed by pizza and charcuterie (while the kiddos enjoyed playing in the beach club sand). Recommend!

How has your summer been? Full of adventures I hope? This fall promises plenty more to be had in Stavanger, so I am excited to start sharing events and happenings with you again.

My summer has been filled with small and big adventures. The biggest ones took us abroad, but somehow the magic moments are still always the simplest ones for me. Give me a car, good music and company willing to belt out the lyrics, and you have me at happy overload.

One of my most memorable closer-to-home adventures was finally taking the train to Sirevåg and Fiskerfruen. This was on my summer list and I am so glad we did it. Armed with a homemade adventure map made especially for the train journey, the magical moments were many. The fish and chips at Fiskerfruen delivered (how can fish be that good-looking AND tasty?), and on our walk back to the train we discovered Vågen 38. A gem where the owners let everyone (!) use their gardens. So cute and well done. I have said this before, but there really are so many generous and magical people in this world!

So now, on to the weekend and what to do in Stavanger and beyond. It is a good one, with something for everyone. We are talking tractor pulling, tomato festivals, cowboys, cider tastings, art walks and one slightly insane triathlon - all in one weekend.

• Storhaug countryfest - Junior: How fun this sounds! Tou is turning into the Wild West for the day, with country music, horses and plenty of cowboy spirit. Free (!) and no ticket needed. From 12:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Blues Concert - Sandvedparken: Reidar Larsen is a local blues treasure and is holding an outdoor concert. Music outside on a Saturday afternoon? Yes please. Sounds amazing. From 14:00 to 16:00. Free entry and no tickets needed. More info here.

• Tractorpulling: I still don’t understand the rules completely (Googled it and this is what came up…), but what a fun way to get outside and do something different. Honestly, understanding the rules feels beside the point. Ticketed. From 10:00 and on. More info here.

• Bygdefest in Heskestad: I am a sucker for bygdefestdager (small country fairs) and this one promises bouncy castles, mini electric cars, an indoor shooting competition and a vintage car parade. Exactly the kind of wonderfully random combination I love. From 12:00 to 16:00. More info here.

Sunday

• Kåsenhelgen - åpen hall: Kåsen IL is hosting events all weekend. Sunday is the one that stands out to me. Open sports hall for kiddos, café at the clubhouse and a secondhand market. Easy Sunday outing, especially with little ones. From 09:30 to 13:00. More info here.

• Sunday Cafe - Arboret: To me, an adventure really can just be a beautiful walk followed by a waffle. From 11:00 to 13:00. More info here.

• Tripp Trapp Triathlon: I never get tired of cheering and this one seems like an incredible one to do it at (participant tickets are sold out). Tripp Trapp is an epic race through Ryfylke: 25 km of paddling, all 4444 Flørli steps, a 12 km mountain run and 30 km by bike. Starts in Oanes at 9:00. Heia heia! More info here.

• Art Walk Around Mosvannet: Stavanger Art Museum is closed, but still want you to experience art. Join a guided art walk around Mosvannet and discover some of the works hiding in plain sight. Free but ticketed. From 14:00 to 14:45. More info here.

The weekend

• Tomato Festival Finnøy: I have wanted to go here “forever”. It is a local summer festival that has been on for more than 20 years celebrating everything that makes Finnøy and Ryfylke special. Activities for the kiddos, local food and produce to taste, and plenty of local businesses and makers to discover. From Wednesday 19th to Sunday 23rd. Free but some activities may be ticketed. Sans kids

• Storhaug Countryfest: Tou is going full country with live music, line dancing, cowboy food, vintage finds and plenty of western atmosphere. My inner cowboy is so into this. And there are even line-dancing classes(!). More info here.

• Siderfest Stavanger: I loveeee tastings, and since I’ve tried some really good local ciders, this one is very tempting. Some of Norway’s best cider producers are coming to Stavanger for tastings (plus cider lunches and special dinners). Sounds fun to me. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Bali Bites. There is a new take-away place in town and I would love to try it. Can’t find a link to a website (other than this), but the menu promises all sorts of yummy food: chicken satay, dumplings, yellow chicken rice, black pepper beef, padang rice (should have eaten before writing this).

• Place worth a stop anytime (for the summer season): Sirkus Leikvoll. Pick raspberries or blueberries at this idyllic place (check here for more details on availability). Easy parking and you can come and go as you please (my favorite kind of setup).

Here comes the fifth and last edition of the summer version(s) of Always Up For Adventures. Each week throughout the summer has had its own theme and a small summer challenge. The next newsletter will be with regular weekend updates in August.

This week’s edition is all about day trips. Because one of the best things about living here is that you don’t actually have to travel very far to feel like you’ve been away. A free afternoon is often enough.

I often get asked where people should go if they have a day to spare. So this week I thought I’d make it easy. If I had a free day this summer, these are four day trips I’d consider. Copy them exactly as they are. Or use them as inspiration to create your own. The most important thing is simply to get outside a little and always be “up for adventures.”

Ryfylke Day Trip

If your goal is to feel like you’ve travelled much farther than you actually have. Start by driving the impressive tunnel to Ryfylke. Pick up something delicious at Strand Gårdsutsalg. Head out to Jørpelandsholmen. Take a walk around, grill some of the food you brought with you and go for a swim. Visit a cider distillery - I’d definitely recommend booking a cider tasting as part of the experience (I can safely recommend Omcider). Finish the day with dinner by the fjord or an ice cream on the way home. This is one route I never get tired of.

The Train Trip

Take the train south without being in any particular hurry. Get off at a station you’ve never visited before. There are several stops I’d recommend. But what I’d really like to do this summer is take the train to Sirevåg, stroll down to the harbor and then back to Fiskerfruen for fish and chips. Soak up the summer atmosphere down there. Then wander back up to the train station for dessert (and maybe a little shopping?) at Pauserommet at Sirevåg Station. Then hop on the next train home. Now that’s a day trip! Choo choo!

The Kvitsøy Route

One of the most underrated day trips we have. Take the first ferry out (this one is still free too—more information here). Drive or cycle around the island (see the Cultural Trail for recommended stops here). Stop by the lighthouse or enjoy the view from the Trafikksentralen. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Go for a swim. Have lunch at Grøningen (only open Friday to Sunday during the summer season), or pack a picnic. Learn about lobster fishing history and local fishing traditions (surprisingly fascinating) from the wonderful people working at the Hummermuseet (also only open Friday to Sunday during the summer season).

Jæren Day Trip

Of course a trip around Jæren had to make the list. First stop: picking up food for a picnic. Start at Hole Gård and buy something tasty for the trip. Then continue to the storm shelter at Madland Hamn (perfect even if summer forgets to show up, and if you have brought food for the BBQ, you can barbecue there), or stop at the café at Kvassheim Fyr (you’re welcome to bring your own food, although you might just find something there you hadn’t already picked up on your trip). Finish with a short walk surrounded by the sea and the endless Jæren landscape. Perfect if you enjoy local food, open landscapes and that feeling of being just a little bit on holiday.

This week’s little summer challenge

Choose a day trip you’ve never done before. Don’t spend more time planning it than actually doing it. Some of the best days begin with: “Should we go for a drive?”

Here comes the fourth edition of the summer version of Always Up For Adventures. Each week throughout the summer has its own theme and a small summer challenge.

This week’s theme started with a question I get every now and then: “What would you show someone if they came to visit Stavanger?”

And my answer is always: it depends. Because I don’t think there’s such a thing as the perfect Stavanger day. Some people love nature. Others want to eat their way through the city (always me). Some want to see what everyone else sees. Others want to find the places they never would have discovered on their own.

So instead of making one list, I thought I’d share how I’d plan the day depending on who was coming to visit. Maybe you know someone like them. Maybe you are one of them.

If they love food

I actually don’t think I would book a restaurant straight away. Instead, I’d take them on a little road trip. If the pick-your-own season has started (which it almost has), you can pick your own raspberries at Wølstad (book ahead, more info here) or blueberries at Sirkus Leikvoll (often available as a drop-in, more info here). From there we’d drive to Jerseymeieriet. Then continue to Wiig Gartneri. If time, stop by Ystepikene for some cheese. And finish with either a picnic on one of Jæren’s beaches, a hot dog at Håland Kjøtt or dinner at NIK Jæren.

If they love nature

I would head south along the coastline. From Stavanger to Sola to Hellestø, then take a walk along the beach. I’d probably continue to Kongeveien for a stroll. No rush. Just nature, the sea, the wind and wide open landscapes. Then I would finish the day with a proper outdoor dinner at Bjelland Gård (which is very high on my own wishlist).

If they like small adventures

Then we’re taking a ferry or a boat. Always. Because the sea gives me an instant sense of adventure. Vassøy is the easiest option since the ferry leaves frequently from the city centre (more info here). With or without a car. Stand on deck and take in the fjord. When you arrive, wander around the island or walk to the suspension bridge leading to Vassøykalven (I still haven’t done that myself!). Or, this summer, it’s also easy to take the boat to Natvigs Minde (more info here). Just a couple of hours, but what a wonderful way to experience the region.

If they’ve never been to Stavanger

Then we’d have to visit a few classics. Old Stavanger. Fargegaten. Fish soup at the Fisketorget. A bit of checking out the views from Ullandhaugstårnet. And maybe an ice cream in Hafrsfjord combined with a visit to Sverd i fjell. Not because it is touristy. But because some classics deserve to be classics.

If they love a good view

Then we’d spend the day taking little detours and enjoying great viewpoints. Ullandhaugtårnet. Ytraberget. Fjøløy. Maybe Dalsnuten if everyone still has the energy. Not necessarily the highest peaks. Just the viewpoints that remind you how varied this region really is. Bring some local food, and you’ve got memories waiting to happen.

If they just want to relax

No big plans. Ølberg. Fish and chips. An ice cream. A short walk. Maybe a swim. And if the weather isn’t cooperating, you can sit inside the cabin above the campsite. That’s it. Some of the best days look exactly like that.

Think of someone you care about. If they were coming to Stavanger tomorrow, where would you take them? Then choose one of those places and go there yourself this week. Because sometimes we forget to visit the places we love recommending the most.

Here comes the third edition of the summer version of Always Up For Adventures. Each week throughout this summer has its own theme and a small summer challenge.

This week isn’t about the big attractions. Not Prekestolen. Not Kjerag. Not the places everyone talks about. This week is about the small places and the spots you might drive right past without noticing. The places that don’t necessarily make the top of anyone’s “must-see” list and the places where you suddenly stop and think: “Why has nobody told me about this?”

I love places like that. Maybe because they feel a little more like a discovery. Maybe because the view feels a little more earned when you have it almost all to yourself. And as an added bonus, if I discover a place that people close to me who know the area far better than I do haven't visited, I feel like I've won the adventure lottery.

Some of my favorite memories come from places I never planned to visit, so this week I’m sharing some of my favorite small places with big views. Not necessarily the highest peaks, but definitely some of the most beautiful.

My favorites (and a few I still want to try)

• Ullandhaugstårnet: I’ve never heard anyone rave about Ullandhaug Tower. Maybe because it’s so close that we take it for granted. But that’s exactly what I like about it. Within just a few minutes, you can be standing with views across Stavanger, Hafrsfjord, Ryfylke and much of North Jæren. It’s the kind of place that reminds me how much we actually have right on our doorstep. Perfect for a little detour when you need some perspective (quite literally).

• Fjøløy Fort: If you only choose one place from this list for a summer evening, Fjøløy is a very strong contender. Ocean views in every direction. Beautiful but easy walking trails. A free BBQ area on the way. And the feeling of being much farther from home than you actually are. Love it!

• Randabergsfjellet: One of those places I keep coming back to. Not only because it’s spectacular, but because it’s so accessible. You don’t have to plan and you don’t have to set aside an entire day. You can simply go. And suddenly you’re standing there looking out over the ocean. Sometimes that’s more than enough.

• Helland-Flekksta: We found this place completely by accident.

  Or maybe more accurately: because we took an exit that looked like it couldn’t possibly lead anywhere. The road gets narrower and you start wondering if you’ve taken a wrong turn. Then you arrive at what must be the world’s smallest parking lot. Surrounded by green fields, sheep, cows (if you don’t have dung on you or your shoes by the end you have something wrong <3) and silence. From there, a beautiful walk begins where the views just keep getting better. This is exactly the kind of place I love. A little hidden, a little unexpected and one hundred percent worth the detour.

• Ryfylke Gardsysteri: Some views are beautiful. Others become even better when you’re eating excellent cheese at the same time. This definitely belongs in the second category. Pick up some of their award-winning cheeses, grab a seat at the table outside and enjoy the landscape. Simple and absolutely perfect. And if you have a dedicated driver, you can always stop at one of the many local cider producers nearby as well.

• Ytraberget på Sola: This is one of those places I almost don’t want to share because it really is a hidden gem... but more people deserve to know about it.

  Walk along the shoreline from Ormen Lange (where the wooden vikings are) and continue out, then take the other route back. At the top you’ll be rewarded with views of the sea, the beaches and the open landscape around Sola. I absolutely LOVE this place. It’s also full of history, so keep an eye out for the signature of a very famous man (at least famous to Norwegians <3).

This week’s little summer challenge:

Visit a viewpoint you’ve never been to before. It doesn’t have to be far away. It doesn’t have to be spectacular. Just somewhere you can stop for five minutes and take it all in. Bonus points if you take the little detour that wasn’t part of the plan.

Here comes the second edition of the summer version of Always Up For Adventures. Each week throughout this summer will have its own theme and a small summer challenge. And I hope you took (and continue to take) the opportunity to support our local farmers.

This week’s theme is simple, but very important for the summer: ICE CREAM (and also dedicated to my friends IET who have grand ice cream plans for the summer). In a way this newsletter isn't really about ice cream. It is about everything ice cream can be an excuse for.

A drive with no particular destination. A beach you’ve never visited before. A ferry ride. A place you never planned to stop. Or simply an excuse to stay somewhere a little longer than you intended.

Most of my favorite summer memories don’t come from big events or carefully planned days. They come from moments that started with someone saying:

“Should we go get ice cream?”

And somehow that turned into an adventure. An ice cream eaten sitting on a rock watching the water.

As you know by now, I think these small moments are often the best ones. So this week’s newsletter (and the summer challenge waiting for you at the end) is dedicated to ice cream.

Or perhaps more accurately: To the adventures that happen because of it.

For the “actual ice cream” stops:

• Is Paradis Hafrsfjord: One of my favorite “discoveries” this year has been the "new" ice cream bar in Hafrsfjord. Not just because of the ice cream, but because it's one of those places that makes it easy to slow down for a little while. Grab an ice cream, grab a seat or find a spot by the water and watch the ocean. Opening hours depend on the weather. More info here.

• Ølbergkiosken: I think I've already established that I love Ølberg. The beach, the cute houses, the sea and that unmistakable summer feeling that somehow exists even when the weather isn't cooperating. Add an ice cream and you've got one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon. More info here.

For ice cream + a walk:

• Solastranden: Some places never get old, and Solastranden is one of them. Yes, you may have been there but that doesn’t make it less magical. One of the things I love most is that it doesn't have to be a big outing. Walk along the water (maybe with your feet in it), feel the wind in your face and watch the waves for a little while. That's it. There is something about being next to the sea that makes almost any day feel a little better. Grab an ice cream (at either end as both the Solastrand Hotel and YVAM Rogaland (unable to locate the opening hours) have their selection).

• Jørpelandsholmen: I don't really know how to explain why I love this place so much. Maybe it's being surrounded by water. Maybe it's the little swimming spots hidden around the island (which is on my wishlist for this summer). Maybe it's the feeling that you've discovered something. Whatever it is, it feels a little bit magical every time I visit. Add an ice cream and you've got one of my favorite adventures in Ryfylke. Pick up an ice cream at Skafferiet in Jørpeland either before or after.

For ice cream as a detour:

• Vassøy: I will never stop recommending Vassøy. Partly because it's lovely, but mostly because taking a ferry automatically makes something feel like an adventure. Buy an ice cream at the local Joker store, wander around the island and enjoy the feeling of being away from everything while still being only minutes from Stavanger. • Natvigs Minde: Right outside the Stavanger City Center harbor there is a tiny island with tons of history. Last time we went, we had an idyllic boat ride with a very knowledgable captain. And when we got there we played some croquet, learned about the island, watched the many boats passing by and enjoyed an ice cream (or two). Pure summer magic! And this year Stavanger Library has made it even easier to get here. More info here.

• Sogndalstrand: If you’ve never wandered through Sogndalstrand, this is your sign. The beautiful wooden houses, narrow streets, the river running through the village and a pace that feels very different from everyday life. Ice cream from Sogndalstrand Kulturhotell in hand and walk to the “end” of the town up the rocks and enjoy the view of the ocean glittering. If that isn’t beautiful I don’t know what is. This week’s little summer challenge:

The next time someone says, “Should we go get ice cream?” Say yes. Or better yet, be the one who says “let’s get ice cream” at the least expected time. Then take the long way home. You deserve it <3

Here comes the first edition of the summer version of Always Up For Adventures. Each week throughout the summer will have its own theme and a small summer challenge.

This week is all about farms, farm shops, and places that remind me just how lucky we are to live in the middle of a pretty incredible food basket. And for those who know me, food is my great passion.

I never get tired of the feeling of driving out onto Jæren or further into Ryfylke and suddenly finding myself in front of a farm, a small shop, animals in a field, and people who have spent years building something entirely their own. My dream for this summer is actually quite simple: more detours. More places I’ve never been before. More people making things with their own hands. And a little more time to stop when something looks interesting.

There is something about that which feels both simple and important at the same time.

So here are some farm stops that I either love, want to try, or think deserve a place on your summer list.

Not because you have to do everything. But because it is ALWAYS nice to have options. And please, support the farmers. Because without farmers, there is no food <3

My favorites:

Jæren

• Jerseymeieriet: My favorite dairy in the entire world. Ice cream, butter, sour cream, milk - everything somehow tastes a little more real here. I love that it reminds me that milk actually comes from cows (and I never get tired of filling the bottles myself) and not just from a carton in the fridge. If you appreciate good ingredients, this is a wonderful stop. And it's in Jæren, which is ALWAYS a bonus in my book <3

• Wiig Gartneri: Are there better tomatoes than the ones from Wiig? I don’t think so. Their Piccolo tomatoes are something I genuinely miss when I’m outside Norway. They have plenty of other delicious produce too. A visit here always reminds me how lucky we are to live somewhere you can buy food directly from the people who grow it.

• Ystepikene: If you like cheese, you should honestly stop reading and add this place to your summer list immediately. Here you can buy award-winning cheeses, peek straight into the production area, and enjoy the views across Jæren from the cheese terrace (where they generously even let you bring your own food!). PS! There is a very high chance you will leave with more cheese than you originally planned.

• Line Gårdsutsalg: Lots of local food, animals right outside, and that unmistakable Jæren feeling. I rarely take a trip out to Jæren without buying their eggs. People say you can't taste the difference between eggs, but I beg to differ. These are better, yellower, and that's simply the end of the discussion.

• Kryddergarden: Is there anything better than fresh herbs when cooking? I don’t think so. This place at Horpestad has been on my list for a long time and I need to go this summer. Partly because I love people who build something unique, and partly because it sounds like a small piece of Tuscany in the middle of Jæren. Perfect for a summer outing that feels a little different from the usual.

Sandnes

• Krogedal Gårdsdrift: This place feels like a small reward after a drive through beautiful countryside. Local farm food, a dairy and that feeling of being a little farther away than you actually are. I love places like this. A small detour, a small adventure and something delicious to bring home.

• Ims Gard: I have wanted to visit this place for a long time. A farm surrounded by beautiful nature, with its own cattle, sheep, farm shop and locally produced food. Perfect for a Sunday outing, a bit of farm atmosphere and perhaps some local goodies to bring home.

Ryfylke

• Strand Gårdsutsalg: One of my favorite categories of places is “places that somehow make me fill the car with food I never intended to buy.” Strand Gårdsutsalg is exactly that. Local produce, farm atmosphere, and the feeling of discovering something you simply won't find in a regular supermarket. Then enjoy it on a picnic indoors (a weather-proof option in Stavanger) or outside. This is summer to me!

• Sandalen Gård: This is high on my list of places to visit this summer. Just ten minutes from Stavanger city centre, you'll find more than 5,500 apple trees, award-winning cider (they actually won the Norwegian Championship for Best Beverage in 2026!) and people who have built something entirely their own. They sell apples, cider and apple juice here. So cool! Can't wait to try it.

Randaberg

• Slettå Gårdsutsalg: When I have run out of vegetables and want that extra local-food feeling, this is where I go. Jersey milk on a Sunday morning, pumpkins in October, cheese from Randaberg any day, and local honey in this season (go away, pollen allergies). They always seem to have something tempting me and the people who run it are awesome too.

This week’s little summer challenge:

Visit a farm shop you have never been to before. Buy something small. Eggs. Tomatoes. Ice cream. Bread. Cheese. Something grown, made or packed by someone nearby. And take a moment to appreciate how wonderful it is to live somewhere with so much good food right around us. You deserve it, and so do the farmers.

This weekend was a magical mix of all kinds of fun. A Viking Festival in Avaldsnes with beautiful weather and surroundings. A kite festival at Ølberg, crab hunting in a small cove on Sola, and ice cream at the “new” ice cream bar in Hafrsfjord. The highlight was when we discovered two magical hidden gems by taking detours on Rennesøy and in Tysvær. For someone who grew up in the back seat of a car with a driver (hi Dad!) who never took detours, it has become a bit of a mission of mine. I always see something new and I love the feeling of being an explorer.

Before we jump into this weekend, a small update. Over the past few months, I have spent quite a few hours every week digging up events, activities, and experiences across the Stavanger region. And I will continue doing that in the autumn.

But summer is a little different. The truth is that some of my best memories do not come from events at all. They come from spontaneous swims at Solastranden. An ice cream at Ølberg. A ferry ride to Vassøy. A detour that turned into an adventure.

That is why this newsletter will look a little different over the next few weeks.

Instead of focusing on what is happening this particular weekend, I will be sharing some of my favourite places, summer outings, hidden gems, and things I think everyone should experience at least once in our region.

The goal is still the same as always: to help you experience more of the place where you live.

So whether you are on holiday, working all summer, or simply trying to find something fun to do with family or friends, I hope these summer editions will provide a little inspiration.

• Pirate Day at Sola: If you have little pirates at home, this could be right up their alley. Expect paper boats, pirate hats, and a treasure hunt—the kind of simple activities that often turn out to be surprisingly successful. From 10:00 to 14:00. Free and no registration required. • Nordsjørittet 2026: This is one of the truly iconic cycling events in the region. Hundreds of cyclists set off from Egersund through the beautiful Jæren landscape before finishing in Sandnes, with ocean views, food stations, and cheering crowds along the route. Whether you are riding yourself (it is still possible to sign up) or know someone who is (we will be cheering on someone close to us), it is hard not to be impressed by the effort. Sunday

• Motor History Day: Everything from vintage cars and motorcycles to tractors and other motorised curiosities comes together here, while Rogaland Car Museum opens its doors with a renewed exhibition. I especially like events where enthusiasts get to showcase what they are passionate about. It tends to be just as interesting as the vehicles themselves. From 11:00 to 15:00. • Knudaheio and Garborgheimen: Visit the home of Arne Garborg and take a walk up to Knudaheio, his small writing cabin overlooking the beautiful Jæren landscape. Perfect to combine with a drive around Jæren and some fresh air. Open from 12:00 to 16:00. More info here.

The weekend

• Relay for Life: This is one of the most moving events on the calendar. Over the course of 24 hours, people walk and run together to show support for everyone affected by cancer, with concerts, activities for children, a candlelight ceremony, and a strong sense of community throughout. Whether you participate or simply stop by, it feels like a reminder of how much strength exists when people come together around something that truly matters. From Saturday 13 June at 12:00 to Sunday 14 June at 12:00 at Sandtangen, Bryne. Free to visit (and cheer). More info here.

• Nærbødagane: This is exactly the kind of village festival that makes me think Jæren is pretty awesome. Two days filled with concerts, food, activities for children, pony rides, bouncy castles, the Nordsjøritt cycling race, free breakfast, and lots of life in the town centre. And when Postgirobygget headlines Friday night, there is a very good chance of singalongs and great atmosphere well into the evening. From Friday 12 June to Saturday 13 June. Many activities are free, while concerts require tickets. More info here.

• Strandadagene: Ryfylke has to have its own “days” too, and they do it in style. Concerts, market stalls, bouncy castles, vintage boats, a duck race, balloon releases with gift cards, RIB tours, and activities for both young and old fill the town centre. This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Hebnes Vineyard. A vineyard in Ryfylke still sounds a little unlikely in my head, which is probably exactly why I want to visit. On a south-facing farm overlooking the Sandsfjord, thousands of grapes are grown and turned into white wine, rosé, sparkling wine, and even wine made from honeyberries. During the summer you can join guided tours and wine tastings. I always cheer for people who dare to take a chance!

• Place worth a stop anytime: Helland-Flekksta on Rennesøy. We discovered this place completely by accident after taking a wrong turn, and it was simply magical. You drive down a road that feels like it leads nowhere. Then suddenly there is the world’s smallest parking area, with green fields and sheep as far as the eye can see. From there begins a beautiful walk with views of my favorite thing in the world - the sea. I will definitely be returning with more practical footwear and clothing.

This weekend I got to attend my first tractor pulling event. We were definitely underdressed for the weather (and, as usual, not exactly practical either - mud and light-colored clothes...), and my kids are still too young to understand the rules (to be honest, I’m not entirely sure I do either), but WOW was it fun. The Americana atmosphere, the sound of tractors, people of all ages, and the smell of Texas BBQ from the food stalls makes me think that this probably won’t be my last time.

As with most things I do, I go in with low expectations and a very low threshold for both showing up and leaving. I think that is one of the reasons the list of things I’ve experienced over the years has become quite long, haha.

• Summer Concert in Stavanger Cathedral: Stavanger Cathedral Girls’ Choir is joined by Bragernes Church Girls’ Choir for a shared summer concert. • Wine Tasting with Maria Valdes at Fish & Cow: Award-winning winemaker Maria Valdes from Rias Baixas (a family winery with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages!) is coming to Stavanger to present her own wines, while Fish & Cow serves a three-course menu paired with them. • Open Day at Ryfylke Trelast: I LOVE open days at local businesses. I always learn something new, and you get to see companies at their very best. Ryfylke Trelast is celebrating 80 years with exhibitions, special offers, coffee, ice cream, and activities for both kids and adults. Also a perfect excuse to visit Ryfylke. • Bjergstedfest: Concerts, dance, theatre, choirs, bands, workshops, and the chance to try instruments fill both the park and the surrounding buildings. Perfect for curious kids and adults alike. Sunday

• The 7 Peaks Hike: One of the true bucket-list hikes in the region. This is for people who want to challenge themselves, whether with three peaks or all seven. Afterwards there’s a big celebration at Vatne, where the atmosphere is promised to be top-notch. From 08:00 to 17:00. Registration and more info here.

• Species Hunt at Lundsvågen: The goal is simple: head out into nature and see how many species you can find, whether birds, plants, insects, or creatures living in the sea. A little treasure hunt, a little learning, and a pretty good chance you’ll notice something you’ve never paid attention to before. From 11:00 to 15:00 at Lundsvågen Nature School and Aquarium. • Summer Market in Old Stavanger: Open studios, galleries, workshops, flea markets, music, waffles, and coffee, while the museums open their doors and offer small glimpses into life in earlier times. Perfect for a stroll through one of the city’s most beautiful neighborhoods. From 11:00 to 16:00. More info here.

• Wings & Wheels: The Aviation Museum at Sola will host sports cars and enthusiast vehicles from across the region, while the museum itself remains open with aircraft exhibits and restoration projects. A fun combination and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. From 12:00 to 15:00. Admission NOK 200 for adults, free for children under 16. More info here.

The weekend

• Street Football Norwegian National Championships: This is one of my favorite types of events. Around 400 players from across Norway come together for the tournament - people experiencing homelessness, those struggling with addiction, former inmates, and others who may have had a tougher road than most of us. Even if football is not really your thing, there is something pretty special about cheering for people who have fought their way through difficult circumstances. Friday from 10:30 to 20:00 and Saturday June 6 from 09:00 to 17:00, with the finals at 16:00. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Tanangerdagene: Tananger and the Lions Club (oh, the memories that club created for my own childhood!) are going all out this weekend with a five-day festival. Chemistry shows, concerts, blues music, races, vintage cars, aquariums, therapy ponies, dock dancing, “Take the Chance,” and boat trips to Flatholmen Lighthouse. Wednesday through Sunday. Most activities are free. More info here.

• Kite Festival at Hellestø: Norway’s oldest and largest kite festival. Kite-building workshop at Sola Cultural Centre on Saturday (free, but tickets required. More info here) and the actual kite flying event at Hellestø Beach on Sunday between 12:00 and 16:00 (free and no registration required). Expect skies filled with spectacular kites and international guests flying their own artistic creations. More info here.

• Sandnesugå: This sounds like a proper town celebration in downtown Sandnes. It all begins with a wonderful initiative on Thursday afternoon - a family fun run supporting the Childhood Cancer Association (if you can’t participate, you can also donate via Vipps #958964. I can’t make it myself, but I would love to, so if you participate, send me a message and I’ll make a donation in your name). The weekend continues with free ice cream, a farmers’ market, bubble shows, flea markets, concerts, activities for children, and lots of life in the streets. Perfect if you like events where you can simply show up and wander until you find something fun. Most activities are free. More info here.

• Viking Festival at Avaldsnes: If you’ve ever thought it would be fun to experience Viking life for real, this is the place. More than 200 Vikings from all over Europe move into the Viking farm with tents, crafts, storytelling, battles, and activities, creating something that feels more like a living community than a museum. Friday through Sunday. Ticket required. More info here.

• Turkish Food Festival: I love this. Turkish food is being served outside the mosque in Hillevåg. I spoke with the organizer and was told that absolutely everyone is welcome. There’s even a bouncy castle for the kids. Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 20:00. No registration required. More info here.

• Stavanger Maritime Museum 100 years celebration: This major milestone is celebrated with free admission, free cake, and an open house on Friday from 12:00 to 14:00. Then the festivities continue all weekend with family activities along the Strandkaien (from 12:00 to 15:00). You can also step aboard the sailing ships Anna af Sand and Wyvern. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Kunstdøgnet: For 24 hours, the city will be filled with performance art, concerts, exhibitions, communal meals, walks, and small experiences popping up in places you might normally pass by. It also marks the opening of Kunsthallens new garden, so there’s a lot happening there too. Perfect for experiencing the city in a new way. More info here.

• Place worth a stop anytime: Rosenkildehaven Bageri. A recommendation that is LONG overdue. Not somewhere you can pop into whenever you like, as it is only open Fridays from 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00, but absolutely worth a stop on those days. A bakery with a unique story and fantastic bread (worth every penny, even if my husband experienced a little sticker shock the first time).

Hope everyone has had some nice long weekends. I used the break from the newsletter to get even more inspired and excited about everything happening in the region going forward. The May weather hasn’t exactly felt like typical May weather, but we’ve still had lots of lovely moments outside. My favorite was when I had ambitions of the kids going for a walk on Solastranden, and it instead turned into a spontaneous ocean swim session. They had an amazing time despite the less-than-friendly temperatures. And it reminded me of my constant goal of being more playful (which is also the reason I spent the first month of this year in a cast, but you win some and lose some :)). Life is short and we should all be more “playful”. Not take life so seriously. Any tips on how to get better at this are very welcome, because I am definitely not the best at it myself.

Also, a small side note: I’ve set even bigger goals for reaching more people with this newsletter. Hey, I’ve even hung up posters around town! So if I may ask humbly - could you forward this newsletter to one person you know who might enjoy it? I would really appreciate it.

• Storhaug nabolagsfest: A neighborhood festival at Storhaug with bouncy castles, face painting, competitions, football tricks and lots of activities for all ages. You can also see the Viking trophy and win prizes. Food, activities and promises of great vibes. LOVE this. From 12:00 to 15:00. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Energistafetten: A huge celebration where both runners and non-runners can join. Lots of cheering along the route and that is my favorite part (and what I’m best at). Two of my closest people are running, so that makes it even more fun. First group starts at 12:45, with new starts every three minutes after that. More info here.

Sans kids

• Kunststafett: Imagine wandering around the city while experiencing both art and music along the way. A concert relay with everything from classical music to Billy Joel, an exhibition opening at Sølvberget and ending up in the atelier of Kjell Pahr-Iversen. Stavanger at its most cultural and charming. Love it. From 12:00 to 15:00. Free (or basically almost free with a 15 NOK ticket fee) but requires registration. More info here.

Sunday

• Bee day at Vitengarden: I have always wanted to wear a bee keeper suit and here you get the chance. On this day you can visit beehives in full bee suits, spin honey and make insect hotels. And all of it on a farm in Jæren.. From 12:00 to 17:00. Adult ticket 40 NOK and children free. More info here.

• Grødaland Garden Day: This feels like a proper cozy Jæren Sunday. Garden day at Grødaland with perennial plant sales, pancakes, flower meadows and old buildings open so you can see how people lived back in the day. The kids can look for insects, try stilts and run around while the adults might end up in a garden chat or two. More info here.

• Rabarbrafestival: Rhubarb dipped in sugar is pure childhood memories for me, so a rhubarb festival at Køhler Pavilion itself (best at everything rhubarb) really speaks to me. Rhubarb pizza, rhubarb sausages, parrots, wood carving and lots of local people selling and making beautiful things. Feels like a mix of garden party, market and family day Jæren-style. From 12:00 to 17:00. More info here.

The weekend

• Jær days: Jærdagen is three days of life and activity right in the center of Bryne. People of all ages gather for markets, music, great food and activities for both young and old. To me, singalongs at Jæren sound absolutely magical. From May 29 to May 31. More info here.

• Wonderful World Festivalen: A sea of exciting talks and events touching on philosophy or science in one way or another. Long table dinners where the topic is politics, outdoor classical music concerts, yoga focused on breathing and science shows. Something for everyone here. From Thursday May 27 to May 30. • Traktorpulling: The tractor pulling season is now opening and it’s happening in Bryne. They promise the very best in shows, engine power that you feel and tractors. Friday May 29 from 18:00 and onward, and May 30 from 10:00 and onward. Ticket required. More info here.

• Flyshow Sola: I have a huge soft spot for air shows. In fact, it has been an annual tradition for me and my sister for maaany years. This weekend there’s one happening at Sola. There’s just something about the sound, the atmosphere, and seeing people of all ages standing there looking up that appeals to me. From May 30 to May 31. Ticket required. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Grødaland. As I’ve mentioned a thousand times, I could easily have lived at Jæren. And even though EVERYONE around me would probably say it would not suit me, I sometimes dream about what life on Jæren would have been like in the 1800s. At Grødaland you can walk into old Jæren houses and see how people lived back then. And you can easily combine it with a walk by the sea or along Kongevegen afterwards. (And this Sunday you can also experience garden day there - see further up).

• Place worth a stop anytime: Sogndalstrand. OK, this is a bit of a drive, but oh so worth it. The idyllic little “town” by the sea. When we were there (serendipitously because my husband was driving “race cars” at the nearby Motorcenter), the ocean sparkled so magically that I got goosebumps. Hope many of you got to experience the massive MC spring kickoff (with over 4100 motor cyclists from all over the region!), along with all the incredible, freshly polished cars that came out to show themselves this weekend. We did, and it gave a real boost of energy. Loved it!

Since the next weekends (after this one) are long weekends, there will be a short pause in newsletters from my side. The next one will be Wednesday, May 28th. I have therefore added a list of things you can do anytime at the very bottom. Because, even though, I might seem like someone who is good at planning, I’m not. I just like having tons of options and at the same time the freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want. Thankfully, there are PLENTY of opportunities for that.

• CAP Takeover at Spiseriet: Silver medal winner from this year’s Bocuse d’Or Europe invites you to a three course experience at the Concert Hall restaurant. Last time I checked, there were only a few spots left. Sounds fun! More info here.

• WAFFLE RUN 2026 at Storhaug: For all ages. In the most idyllic surroundings. Prizes: diploma and waffles. Love this. Meet up at 12:00, with the children’s race of 400 m starting at 13:00, and main races of 3 km or 1.5 km at 14:00. Free but requires registration. More info here.

• Gjenbruksfestival at Tou: This feels like one of those slightly different things that could be fun to go to. Second-hand, Norwegian folk music concerts and art. A bit of learning, a bit of inspiration, and maybe you leave with some new ideas. From 12:00 to 16:00. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Kuslipp at Jerseymeieriet: My favorite dairy in the world invites you to a kuslipp and offers grilled food and pancakes. The cows go out at 11:30. From own experience, I recommend going early to secure parking. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Tractor Pulling: Duffy Tractor Pulling Team invites you to an open day to see everything behind tractor pulling (the season starts very soon). From 11:00 to 15:00. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Rave at M/S Sandnes: Inside me there is a person who is always ready to dance to electronic dance music at high volume. So a rave on a boat in Stavanger sounds pretty great to me. Even though I won’t make it this time, I hope some of you will, because I’ll be there in spirit. From 15:00 to 02:00. More info here.

• Mølleparken Vintage Car Meet: Ryfylke Vintage Vehicle Club invites you to a car show at Mølleparken in Tau. Last year they set a record with over 250 vintage cars and 1000 visitors. Could be combined with other activities in Ryfylke. From 13:00 to 17:00. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Våland Soapbox Race 2026: Expect speed, excitement and good vibes at Våland as creative minds show off their homemade vehicles. From 12:00. Free and no registration required (unless you are participating with your own soapbox car). More info here.

• Wings for Life World Run 2026: This is a slightly different kind of race that is happening at the same time worldwide. In Stavanger it takes place around Mosvatnet, and it feels like a nice mix of something social, a bit of a challenge and a good cause behind it. From 13:00. Requires registration. More info here.

• Open hall Ålgård: Need to get some energy out of the kids? Free play in a large hall is a good way to do that on a Sunday morning. Costs 20 NOK per child. From 10:00 to 12:00. More info here.

The weekend

• NM Motocross: Ever since I got to know an incredible motocross talent a few years ago, I have had a soft spot for watching this sport. The mix of engine noise, being outdoors, and the atmosphere is what draws me in. This weekend it’s the Norwegian Championship at Elgane. Let’s go! Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. Free and no registration required. More info here.

• Maijazz 2026: Stavanger’s oldest festival is being held for the 37th time this year. Jazz is a big category, and how cool is it that someone set out to bring some of the world’s best to Stavanger? On the lineup this year I would love to see Nils Petter Molvaer, Kinga Głyk, Jazz a la Pippi and much more. More info here.

Any time stops

Playgrounds:

Did you know there are around 400 playgrounds in Stavanger municipality? The municipality has made a map: see the map here. Here are two of my favorites (I always have to climb a tower, so these are really my favorites 😂):

• Playground in Klepp town center, with a hot dog from Pølsebuå at Håland before or after (you can sit inside the grill hut at Håland if the shop is open).

• Playground at Lervig School in East Stavanger: Endless playgrounds gathered in one place, and several nearby cafés where you can grab food or coffee.

Nature Experiences

There are plenty, but here are some of my favorites:

• The Fairytale Forest in Årdal: A true fairytale forest walk with or without kids. Free and always open. And while you’re there, stop by Ryfylke Bakeri og Konditori in Årdal (yummy!).

• Randabergfjellet: A short but absolutely fantastic walk with views over the ocean and beach. A shelter hut halfway along the trail is perfect for a break and daydreaming. Park at the top (Randaberggeilen 20).

• The storm hut in Madland Hamn. Probably one of the few places that gets better the worse the weather gets. Drive down to the picturesque harbor and open the stunning hut (there is a electronic button outside). Bring snacks, bundle up and enjoy the views. If bringing kids - let them roam free.

• Fjøløy Fort: The stunning ocean views and the short but lovely walk make the drive worthwhile in almost any weather. And if you have energetic kids, the playground by Skorpefjell Kindergarten is worth a stop. Fun for the kids, beautiful sea views for you.

• Vassøy: This small island in the fjord has a free car ferry (at least for now). Fifteen minutes each way on deck with views and sea air is balm for my soul. There are great walking paths, a local shop, and a playground. Timetable here (there may be slight changes during the holidays).

• Ullandhaugstårnet. Ok, this may be a bit obvious BUT I love a view and there is no better place for it than this. The steep hill from the parking and the stairs reward you at the top. Combine with a walk around in the woods and the Botanical Gardens.

• Friluftstunet Brekko. Now that I finally got a chance to go there, I know now it is worth visiting anytime. The drive through stunning nature quickly makes you forget where you are in the world. When there is snow, there is even a lit sledding hill, wow, pure luxury! The warming cabin is open on Sundays, and there is also a shelter and grill pan you can use whenever you like. Absolutely recommend!

• Solastranden. Sometimes the simple things are the best. One of the world’s most beautiful beaches all year round (honestly, I think the colder it is, the prettier the water looks). It’s great at any time. If the wind is really strong you can always just step out of the car and back in again and feel alive. And when the weather is nicer, you can take a walk and grab something good to eat at the beach bar at Sola Strand Hotel afterwards.

• The kiosk at Ølberg. A clear sign of spring when this idyllic little kiosk opens for the season, which is now. Open in the weekends until the summer holidays (when it is open all day every day). Ice cream is always a safe bet, but also the yummy fish and chips. Only outside seating so dress accordingly or eat in car (I’m guilty of both).

• Stolpejakten. This is not a place, but a way to see many new places. There are several thousand posts around the country (and many in this region) that have been marked with a code that you scan. Some places you get a participation prize for registering a certain number of posts and other places you enter a draw for great prizes. And regardless you get out into fresh air in cool places. You have to download the app to participate, but everything is free and available anytime. Very cool!

• Alsvik Natursenter. I was here for the first time when cheering for the Sandnes Ultra participants. Even in heavy rain it was incredibly idyllic. Everyone who finished talked about the beautiful trails into the mountains from there. There is also a covered BBQ area and an obstacle course in the forest. You can apparently also book a tent spot there.

Indoors

• Hå Gamle Prestegård: Art, café (with a great playroom), and beautiful nature with walking paths (plus a really nice drive out there). Highly recommended year-round.

• TS Museum at Tjelta: Over 180 vintage tractors, cars, motorcycles, and trucks. Considered Norway’s largest and best-preserved collection of vintage vehicles. Free entry, open daily from 10:00 - 16:00.

• Jerseymeieriet: The dairy of all dairies, in my humble opinion. Whether it’s ice cream, butter, sour cream, or milk, it’s some of the best you’ll find and well worth a stop. Both to see where it’s made and to grab some goodies from the shop. Info about the farm shop here.

• Museums in Stavanger: There are several gems among these 8 associated museums. One ticket allows entrance to all other open museums on the same day. Tons of things happening and all is listed here.

• Buøy Bakeri. Ok not anytime, as it is not open on the weekends (nor the month of July), but oh so worth it. Get the Skjærsgård bread and please request the discontinued San Francisco bread (maybe if enough of us request it they will bring it back).

• Wiig Gartneri. The world’s yummiest tomato award goes to this place. When not in Norway (and also while here haha), I crave the piccolo tomatoes. They have now opened for the season. So now you can shop directly from them, have a great scenic drive and enjoy all their goodies.

• Kvassheim Lighthouse. A fantastic spot with a café and a stunning view. Two floors with activities for both children and adults, and you can even climb to the top of the tower. Free entry. Open Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Enjoy!

• Orre Friluftshus. Another gem along the coast. Small but fun information center at a fantastic location. Tucked in behind the beautiful Orre beach, you can enjoy a walk to the beach before going inside to eat your lunch or buy something from their cafe. You can also use their BBQ outside that is sheltered from the wind. Free entrance. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00.

• Krogedal Gårdsdrift. We met the friendly farmer behind this delicious cheese at a farmers market one time and he said “come visit one time, we are located “just above” Sandnes”. I think that is one way of explaining it but also not (stated in the most kind way possible). If you are looking to drive through beautiful scenery with a destination that sells yummy, local farm food, this is one stop for you. We loved it! Can also be combined with what is said to be a beautiful hike.

• NIK. A relaxed vibe restaurant along the main road on Jæren that serves delicious French food with local ingredients. They also have a small play corner for the youngest. Enjoy!!

• Line Gårdsutsalg. Lots of local food, a sandbox, and animals right outside. I hardly go on a trip to Jæren without buying their eggs (if it’s Sunday, I buy them at Jerseymeieriet). They say you can’t taste the difference between eggs, but “I beg to differ.” These eggs are better, yellower and so it is!

• Afro Cuisine. A good friend recommended this restaurant that serves freshly made African food in the middle of Solakrossen. You can order takeout or sit there (which we did). The food is amazing. The best plantains I’ve ever had. Already looking forward to trying more from the menu next time.

Wow, the response to the rebranding and the new website has been incredible. And that means sooo much to me. Thank you, truly. It gives me a real extra boost to keep sharing more and more.

With spring comes spring cleaning, and I therefore want to share a small encouragement. Lately I’ve met so many inspiring people who bring a plastic bag with them and pick up trash wherever they are. One man told me he and his son see it as a kind of treasure hunt in nature (and I love that way of seeing the world). So simple but so impactful! I haven’t done it yet, but it’s high on my to do list. Just imagine the difference we all can make!

This weekend is one of the many long weekends coming up in May. You might think that means there isn’t much happening, but it’s actually the opposite! As usual, passionate people across the region show up so we can have real adventures. There are so many things to do. Isn’t that amazing? This weekend you can experience everything from “kuslipp” to the “MC-slipp”(don’t know the English word for it - if you do please hit reply and let me know) and much more. NOW spring is really here! • Spring Ride MC 2026: For the 36th time (!) motorcycle enthusiasts from near and far gather to ride in a convoy from Klepp to Stavanger and then to Egersund. Also called the Vårslipp. Find a spot along the road and take in the atmosphere. Free and no registration required. The ride starts at 11:00 in Klepp. More info here.

• AMCAR Rogaland Spring Gathering: And if that wasn’t enough motor fun with the Vårslipp, you can also check out lots of cool cars at the annual vehicle exhibition at Kvadrat. From 10:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Hole Farm Shop Kuslipp: I LOVE “kuslipp” (honestly any kind of “slipp”), which is when the farmers let the cows out for the spring/summer. Watching the cows literally jump out is peak spring for me. Hole Farm (their burgers are must for spring bbq) invites you to see their cows going outside at 11:00. There’s also a chance to see other animals and buy ice cream :) Free and no registration required. More info here.

Saturday

• Family Saturday - The Super Potato: I am the biggest fan of potatoes (boiled, fried, mashed, gratinated, with butter, without butter, the list goes on…) so a celebration of the potato definitely appeals to me. Free and no registration required. From 10:00 to 14:00. More info here.

• Sanitation worker and taxi driver reading in uniform (IN NORWEGIAN): Time Library continues their great reading session where men in uniform are invited to read for the children. From 13:00 to 13:30. More info here.

• Nature Day Dyrsnes: An event at Dyrsnes nature center by Stokkavannet. Everything from pine cone throwing competitions to air rifle shooting to bird watching and more. Free and no registration required. From 11:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Open Day - Kyvik Auto: If you didn’t get enough engines on Friday, you get another chance. In collaboration with På hjul mot mobbing (“On Wheels against Bullying” - an organization with a fantastic goal of making everyday life brighter for children) you’re invited to a day full of activities, shows and good vibes. There will be a Ferrari show, pony rides, BBQ and more. So generous and such a cool setup. From 11:00 to 14:00. More info here.

• EZ Carz and Coffee: Another motor option this weekend (!). Sports cars, supercars and enthusiast cars combined with food trucks. From 12:00 to 16:00. More info here.

• Outdoor Day at Brekko: Gjesdal group invites you to make a seljefløyte (“willow flute”). This is one of the many things from my childhood I wish I could pass on. So “simple” but also so magical. There is also a heated cabin and dough ready for stick bread to grill (you can also bring your own food). Free and no registration required. From 12:00 to 15:00. • Sunday Dinner Kvalbein Farm: It’s been a while since I recommended this place, but I still get cravings for their salmon from time to time. So it’s perfect that they’re open this Sunday. From 12:00 to 16:00. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Le Pere. A newly opened French restaurant in one of the oldest historic houses along Breiavannet in the city. The name of the place is in honor of the owner’s father, who sadly passed away just a couple of weeks before the opening. I really support initiatives like this and can’t wait to try it!

• Place worth a stop anytime: Afro Cuisine. A good friend recommended this restaurant that serves freshly made African food in the middle of Solakrossen. Despite what can only be described as uninspiring weather, it was a weekend full of adventures and magical memories, completely in my spirit. I went to a wine tasting and had amazing pizza at my new favorite in Sandnes, Syttiseks, gokart racing at Klepp, bought tomatoes at Wiig Gartneri, made a quick visit to the beautiful new shop at Hole Gård, cheered on some loved ones at Sandnes Ultra (what an event (!) in idyllic surroundings), and spent time with friends. A bit of everything.

When I read that weekend recap, I can hear the people saying, “Why do you always have to go out and do new things?”. Haha, even my husband feels like I have unlimited stamina for adventures (despite the fact that I am one of the laziest people I know). Maybe it is genetics. Maybe some kind of addiction. I don’t know. I just know that I almost never regret going. Even when something isn’t a full success, it usually ends up being worth it in some way. So it feels so aligned that this newsletter now has a new name: Always Up For Adventures (which is me)

And eeek, its own website: alwaysupforadventures.com. Hoping that makes it easier to share with new and old friends, people who have lived here forever or are just visiting.

• Sandnes Spring Festival: You are invited to spring vibes and inspiration in Sandnes city center. Just some of the things offered: culture safari, meeting animals, children can play with tractors, clown, concerts, flea market, and exciting food. Free and no registration required. • Siddisløpet: For the 42nd year in a row, this race is organized for everyone of all ages and levels (the kids race is fully booked). Whether you cheer or participate, I am guessing you will get a boost of inspiration and energy. From 10:30 and onwards. More info here.

• Beer Festival: Norbrygg invites you to Norway’s largest homebrewing event. I have said it before, I am not a big beer drinker, but what I am is constantly inspired by people’s passion for their interests. This sounds pretty perfect for that. From 16:00 to 22:00. More info here.

• Vitengarden 4H Day: Good old outdoor day with lots of things to try: you can make food on a bonfire, carve wood, chop wood, saw, or test Felle-Jon. Plus the farm has lambs, calves, piglets, and chickens <3 Tickets: adult 145 kr, child 75 kr, family 390 kr. From 12:00 to 16:00. More info here.

• Day Trip Cabin Concert Stokki Sandnes: Sandnes Opera Choir is performing a concert after you walk to the day trip cabin in Sandnes. How cool is that? Free and no registration required. Concert starts at 15:00. More info here.

• The World of Snakes: Want to learn more about snakes and maybe even meet one? Not really me, but I do have a goal of facing all my fears, so maybe this is the place. Free but requires registration. From 14:00 to 14:40. More info here.

• Opprykkskamp at Tasta: Tasta Handball Club’s women’s team is playing for promotion to the 3rd division and invites everyone to come cheer and create a great atmosphere. • Lento Running Club - Madla: A sporty group invites you to run and enjoy good vibes. I still cannot run (at least not far or fast enough to keep up with anyone), so please do this for me <3. No registration required. From 12:00. More info here.

• Horse Show Sandnes and Jæren Riding Club: Horses are and always will be the best. Show jumping in all classes is represented at this event. Fun to watch all days. Friday to Sunday from 09:00. More info here.

• Vertskapsugå Sandnes: Several restaurants offering 3 course meals for 500 kr. Explore new flavors and discover new favorite places. Booking a table is recommended. From April 22nd to 25th. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Flørli 4444. The world’s longest wooden staircase starting from a historic small village inside Lysefjorden and said to have an incredible view as the reward at the top. Can be combined with a trip to the power plant museum and food from the café there.

• Place worth a stop anytime: Alsvik Natursenter. I was there for the first time last weekend, since that was where all participants in Sandnes Ultra finished. Even in heavy rain it was incredibly idyllic. Everyone who finished talked about the beautiful trails into the mountains from there. A very windy, but really fun weekend it was! We took a trip to the TS museum, which has had a small reorganization since I was there last. I take off my hat for the generosity of this place. Imagine opening such a great, private collection for all of us to see. Truly inspiration in every way. Then we were also so lucky to be invited along to Autopia. We got to see lots of cool cars, gokart and drifting. Car shows always deliver <3

This is my weekly newsletter, sent out every Wednesday (nyhetsbrev på norsk her). My philosophy in life: every place in the world has something exciting happening. I believe there is always something to experience, no matter where you are (in fact, I’m willing to bet I can find something for you no matter where in the world you are reading from*). Sometimes it is big events, other times small experiences that make a weekend memorable. Everything I pick out is something I am considering doing myself, with or without two small children.

• The Network Stavanger: This group invites to a RIB sightseeing trip on the fjord with following lunch. Meet new people, see beautiful nature and enjoy! Free and almost free with lunch (if you ask me) but requires registration. FOR a start to the weekend! From 10:00 to 13:00. More info here.

• Plant market at Ullandhaug: As mentioned earlier I have the opposite of green fingers, but naive enthusiasm I have plenty of. So maybe this is the place to find this spring’s plants? Either way I think you get plenty inspo from all these local plant sellers. More info here.

• Family planting at Sola: Join and plant seeds with Tananger Garden Club. Sounds very cozy. From 12:00 to 14:00. Free and does not require registration. More info here.

• 1/100 marathon: Join Solabladet’s Hundredelsmaraton for kids in the age group 3-12 years and all children get a t-shirt and medal. The race has a limit of 750 participants, so make sure to be registered. Free. Starts at 12:00 and lasts until 14:00. More info and registration here.

• West Norway Championship in Gokart: The outdoor motorsport season is underway. This weekend you can watch gokart at the Klepp KNA track. More info here.

• Jivamukti anniversary festival: One of the city’s nicest yoga places celebrates 21 years with a proper yoga festival from morning to evening. There is so much fun on the program. Starts at 09:00. Requires ticket. More info here.

Sunday

• Ocean Day: Event to spread knowledge, curiosity and enthusiasm for everything fantastic that exists under the sea, especially in this region. Free and does not require registration. From 11:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Stavanger songs: I love sing-along of good old Stavanger songs (like “Det e sjynt å kjøra buss” and “Anna Malena”). Free but requires registration. From 14:00. More info here.

• Open garages on Sunday: A concept started in 2013 to promote reuse and that is still going strong. People (and that can include you) invite into their homes and sell used items. There are already maaaany registered who invite to both sales, waffles and more. Cool concept that I support! More info here.

• Activity day - Vistnestunet: Birdhouse building, campfire coziness and marshmallows, activities and hiking tips, and much more. What an idyll! From 12:00 to 16:00. Free and does not require registration. More info here.

• Open farm at Solheim farm: Will always recommend this place. A passionate woman who wants to share the experience of real farm life. Over 150 animals and lots of fun activities. Children under 1 year go free, everyone else 199 NOK per person. Registration required. From 12:00 to 15:00. More details here. (Ps. it says April 5 on the website but it was cancelled due to storm Dave and moved to this Sunday)

1. Kåkå house opens: The local organizer of events, festivals, courses, talks, +++, Kåkå, has gotten its own house and celebrates as it should with a mini festival with lots of exciting things on the program. With everything from opening party on Thursday, to live podcasts, to kissing competition (can’t make this up), to concert. In addition Stavanger panel is launched: Norway’s first permanent city panel (Among thousands of invited residents, 33 people have now been selected. Together they form a cross-section of different ages, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. These will meet regularly and come up with recommendations concerning the city’s future - SO COOL!). Hope you had a great Easter. Mine was a mix of mountains, city life, and all kinds of weather. Here in the region I finally got to visit the Solabu cabin, do an Easter scavenger hunt at Jørpelandsholmen (which is so beautiful it’s almost unreal), check out Strand Gård (so much yummy food), Sola Strand Hotel, and Hå Gamle Prestegård.

All of it was magical in its own way, but what can genuinely move me to tears is the Easter activity day at Sola Strand Hotel. The hotel had given full creative freedom to their apprentices. The level of generosity (on every level) was just incredible. Easter egg hunts all over the hotel, cakes, hot dogs, decorating cupcakes made by the hotel baker, the Easter bunny… you name it. There was love poured into every detail (and to imagine it was all free!). I get so moved by people who go the extra mile to make things extra special for the rest of us. Think about how much that actually means. And especially these days, how incredibly lucky we are to experience things like this.

This weekend, you’re once again invited to a full “koldtbord” (Scandi word for buffet) of different experiences and little magical moments, both indoors and outdoors. Plenty of opportunities for running for all ages (actually more than I’ve even included). Enjoy!

• Zumba: Am I a good dancer? Meh. Do I like dancing? Yes. I genuinely think we should all dance more often. So Zumba with zero pressure to perform, I’m here for that. From 09:30 to 10:30. Free, no registration required. More info here.

• Mortenløpene: Trail run in Njåskogen. Open to all ages (from 325 meters for kids aged 0–6 and up in both age and distance). A great way to get outside. Ticketed. More info here.

• Sculpture walk in Stavanger: Sandnes Kunstforening invites you on a guided walk with insights and conversations around the different sculptures in Stavanger city center. From 13:00 to 15:00. Free, no registration required. More info here.

• Vietnamese café at Varatun Gård: Vietnamese food ranks high for me, both in childhood memories and experiences. This pop-up café serves the delicious food for a good cause. From 12:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Popcorn Theatre at Røverkjøp: Two birds, one stone. Improv theatre for your kids and thrift shopping for you (Røverkjøp is the Red Cross thrift store in Hillevåg that aims to hire people who need a second chance in life alongside amazing volunteers). • Trolljeger Backyard: Maybe it’s because I’m still limping (and dreaming of jumping and running again), but races like this really appeal to me. Obstacle course in the forest, solo or in teams, as many rounds as you can manage. Let’s go! More info here.

• Jørpeland Rundt 2026: If you’re looking for an extra airy hike this weekend, team up with this great group and conquer no less than 7 peaks around Jørpeland. Food stops along the way. No timekeeping, but you can buy a diploma if you want. From 09:00. Free. More info here. (PS: If you do this - please send me photos from the peaks!)

Sunday

• Foraging trip: Kristine Enger is an expert in foraging (and has a fantastic seasonal newsletter about it). This Sunday you can join her to taste and learn about what you can forage in spring and how to use it. LOVE this. From 13:00. Adults 300 kr, children under 12 free. More info here.

• Outdoor day at Brekko: Learn how to cook over an open fire and enjoy the outdoors at the same time. Complementary pinnebrød (“stick bread”) and the option to grill your own food. The café is also open. From 12:00 to 15:00. Free, no registration required. More info here.

All weekend

• Autopia: I have been to many a car show and always find them inspiring. Innovation mixed with passionate car enthusiasts is more than enough to make me happy. Expect sports cars, supercars, classics, oldtimers and all sorts of vehicles. There’s also a hall with races (including drifting) and a Paw Patrol show for the little ones (Saturday and Sunday at 12:00). Adults and kids over 12 need tickets, under 12 are free. Friday 12:00 to 18:00, Saturday 10:00 to 18:00, Sunday 10:00 to 17:00. More info here.

• Boligmessen: For me growing up here, the Boligmesse is a true sign of spring. A fair for anyone interested in homes, renovation and interiors. Lots of fun elements all days. Bjørnis will also stop by to greet the kids (Sunday at 11:00). Free tickets available online. Friday 11:00 to 19:00, Saturday 10:00 to 18:00, Sunday 10:00 to 17:00. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Draisine at Ålgård. Maybe I’m the only one who didn’t know that the cycle on railway tracks is called a “draisine” (if you didn’t know either, you’re welcome, saved you a Google search). This just seems so magical to try. Two people pedal + a side bench for one adult or up to three kids. You can take breaks along the way. Didn’t make it last year, but new chance this year. The season opens this Sunday.

• A good stop anytime: The kiosk at Ølberg. A clear sign of spring when this idyllic little kiosk opens for the season, which is now. Open in the weekends until the summer holidays (when it is open all day every day). Ice cream is always a safe bet, but also the yummy fish and chips. Only outside seating so dress accordingly or eat in car (I’m guilty of both).

This past one was a weekend right up my alley! A mix of Nowruz party, a birthday celebration, horse riding, Kortreist, and wine tasting. With both new and old friends. So much fun, and very representative of what this region has to offer. It definitely makes the weather, which doesn’t exactly shine all the time, a lot more livable for me :)

Now it’s time for Easter (a word that is used no less than 29 times in this newsletter!). That means an extra long edition this week and none next week. If you’re not heading out of town, there are plenty of opportunities to create great memories here too. As always, the region is generous and packed with activities whether you are 0 or 100 years old. As someone who loves scavenger hunts, Easter egg hunts, etc., I have done my best to highlight as many of those as possible <3 And as usual, I’m drawn to the kind of activities that are free and don’t require registration (probably because I’m not quite adult enough to always have fixed plans and because I love being able to come and go as I please). • Fest etter Fasten: Stavanger Turistforening invites you to an inclusive Eid celebration with food, activities, and lots of fun experiences. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background. Such a great concept. From 12:00 to 14:00. Free, no registration required. More info here.

• Where’s Wally?: Sola Library invites you to search for Wally and his friends hidden around the library. Honestly, this would have been a dream for me as a kid! I still love those books. From 10:00 to 14:00. Free, no registration required. More info here.

• Folkets hus 100 years: Anniversary celebration with cake, exhibitions, book presentations, quiz, and guided tours. Later in the evening there’s also a free concert with Miksteip Vol. 23 (starting at 19:00). From 12:00 to 16:00. Free, no registration required. More info here.

• Cultural adventure trail at Forsand: Pick up brochure at Forsand Volunteer Center and then find lots of local stops that this day (and Sunday) offer art, food, activities, sales and nice prizes. From 11:00 to 17:00. More info here.

• Easter egg hunt - Randabergfjellet: This is apparently a Randaberg tradition and I have gotten it confirmed that it is happening again (but cannot find anything online to link to). The incredibly generous women of Randaberg Sanitetsforening invite you to an Easter egg hunt. Eggs are hidden around the area, and kids can exchange what they find for filled Easter eggs afterwards. Starts at 12:00 (I recommend arriving early for parking). Free, no registration required.

• Egg-citing Vitengarden: Paint eggs, cuddle with cute lambs, and search for the Easter Bunny’s hidden eggs plus enjoy more animals and the great museum. From 12:00 to 17:00. Regular admission applies. More info here.

Monday

• Easter workshop: Sola Atelier invites kids for Easter fun where they can make eggs, chicks, and bunnies. Get creative with paint, paper, glue, and other fun materials. No prior experience needed. Just creativity! From 10:00 to 14:00. 150 NOK per child, registration required. More info here.

• English pub quiz: Dean, “The Irish Brick,” invites you to his quiz night at O’Connor’s in Stavanger. More info here.

Tuesday

• Easter egg hunt at Hommersåk library: All kids are invited to an Easter egg hunt at the library, where eggs are hidden and waiting to be found by little detectives. Requires a bit of a drive there, but that’s part of the experience! From 10:00 to 14:00. Free, no registration required. More info here.

• Navy Race Boot Camp: Navy Race is a military-inspired obstacle race coming to Stavanger for the first time on September 12th. As a warm-up, they are hosting a boot camp in true Navy Race spirit. Sounds like the perfect start to some slower days ahead. From 18:00 to 19:00. Free. More info here.

• Open café at the Rogaland Arboretum: Enjoy a walk in beautiful surroundings, then waffles at the café afterwards. From 11:00 to 13:00. More info here.

• Easter day Sola Strand Hotel: The beach hotel invites to Easter fun day. First there is an Easter adventure trail where you can explore the hotel and solve tasks at different stations. Monday

• Easter egg hunt at Hå Gamle Prestegard: Honestly, can you ask for a better setting. Easter egg hunt, boiling eggs and sausages in the seaside stones. Art for children, art for adults. Perfect ending to Easter if you ask me. From 12:00 to 15:00. 50 NOK per child. Tickets purchased here.

Over several dates

• Spis Ute Ugå: Many restaurants around town are participating in this event with special dishes at good prices. From March 23rd to 29th. More info and menu here.

• Ørnehaug visitor farm: A unique place on Åmøy that has all kinds of animals and activities. Just love when people dare and create things like this. Open throughout the winter holiday. Children under 2 free, everyone else 190 NOK (which includes everything you want of ice cream, soda, coffee, stick bread and baked goods). More info here.

• Easter days Jørpeland: The town has decided to be the best city to celebrate Easter in with activities every single day during the week. Everything from the Easter bunny, to touring a veteran boat, to Easter quiz at Jørpelandsholmen. More info here.

• Hidden eggs at Stavanger Museum: Help find the Easter bunny’s hidden eggs, mark them on the map and win a prize. From March 24th to April 6th. Regular ticket applies. More info here.

• Easter crime at Stavanger Maritime: Solve the mystery that has occurred and take part in a prize draw. Regular ticket applies. Open March 28th–31st, April 1st and 4th. More info here.

• Easter café at Gramstad: Go for a walk to Dalsnuten (or not) and enjoy freshly made waffles, locally roasted coffee, local soda, ice cream and more. From March 29th to April 6th, from 12:00 to 17:00. More info here.

• Easter buffet Drivhuset Bakery: This nice place at Jæren is always a great time for a visit. And I can imagine it is extra lovely now that it is decorated for Easter. Open from April 2nd to 4th. Recommended to reserve table in advance. More info here.

Any time stops

Playgrounds:

Did you know there are around 400 playgrounds in Stavanger municipality? The municipality has made a map: see the map here. Here are two of my favorites (I always have to climb a tower, so these are really my favorites 😂):

• Playground in Klepp town center, with a hot dog from Pølsebuå at Håland before or after (you can sit inside the grill hut at Håland if the shop is open).

• Playground at Lervig School in East Stavanger: Endless playgrounds gathered in one place, and several nearby cafés where you can grab food or coffee.

Nature Experiences

There are plenty, but here are some of my favorites:

• The Fairytale Forest in Årdal: A true fairytale forest walk with or without kids. Free and always open. And while you’re there, stop by Ryfylke Bakeri og Konditori in Årdal (yummy!).

• Randabergfjellet: A short but absolutely fantastic walk with views over the ocean and beach. A shelter hut halfway along the trail is perfect for a break and daydreaming. Park at the top (Randaberggeilen 20).

• The storm hut in Madland Hamn. Probably one of the few places that gets better the worse the weather gets. Drive down to the picturesque harbor and open the stunning hut (there is a electronic button outside). Bring snacks, bundle up and enjoy the views. If bringing kids - let them roam free.

• Fjøløy Fort: The stunning ocean views and the short but lovely walk make the drive worthwhile in almost any weather. And if you have energetic kids, the playground by Skorpefjell Kindergarten is worth a stop. Fun for the kids, beautiful sea views for you.

• Vassøy: This small island in the fjord has a free car ferry (at least for now). Fifteen minutes each way on deck with views and sea air is balm for my soul. There are great walking paths, a local shop, and a playground. Timetable here (there may be slight changes during the holidays).

• Ullandhaugstårnet. Ok, this may be a bit obvious BUT I love a view and there is no better place for it than this. The steep hill from the parking and the stairs reward you at the top. Combine with a walk around in the woods and the Botanical Gardens.

• Friluftstunet Brekko. Now that I finally got a chance to go there, I know now it is worth visiting anytime. The drive through stunning nature quickly makes you forget where you are in the world. When there is snow, there is even a lit sledding hill, wow, pure luxury! The warming cabin is open on Sundays, and there is also a shelter and grill pan you can use whenever you like. Absolutely recommend!

• Solastranden. Sometimes the simple things are the best. One of the world’s most beautiful beaches all year round (honestly, I think the colder it is, the prettier the water looks). It’s great at any time. If the wind is really strong you can always just step out of the car and back in again and feel alive. And when the weather is nicer, you can take a walk and grab something good to eat at the beach bar at Sola Strand Hotel afterwards.

Indoors

• Hå Gamle Prestegård: Art, café (with a great playroom), and beautiful nature with walking paths (plus a really nice drive out there). Highly recommended year-round.

• TS Museum at Tjelta: Over 180 vintage tractors, cars, motorcycles, and trucks. Considered Norway’s largest and best-preserved collection of vintage vehicles. Free entry, open daily from 10:00 - 16:00.

• Jerseymeieriet: The dairy of all dairies, in my humble opinion. Whether it’s ice cream, butter, sour cream, or milk, it’s some of the best you’ll find and well worth a stop. Both to see where it’s made and to grab some goodies from the shop. Info about the farm shop here.

• Museums in Stavanger: There are several gems among these 8 associated museums. One ticket allows entrance to all other open museums on the same day. Tons of things happening and all is listed here.

• Buøy Bakeri. Ok not anytime, as it is not open on the weekends (nor the month of July), but oh so worth it. Get the Skjærsgård bread and please request the discontinued San Francisco bread (maybe if enough of us request it they will bring it back).

• Wiig Gartneri. The world’s yummiest tomato award goes to this place. When not in Norway (and also while here haha), I crave the piccolo tomatoes. They have now opened for the season. So now you can shop directly from them, have a great scenic drive and enjoy all their goodies.

• Kvassheim Lighthouse. A fantastic spot with a café and a stunning view. Two floors with activities for both children and adults, and you can even climb to the top of the tower. Free entry. Open Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Enjoy!

• Orre Friluftshus. Another gem along the coast. Small but fun information center at a fantastic location. Tucked in behind the beautiful Orre beach, you can enjoy a walk to the beach before going inside to eat your lunch or buy something from their cafe. You can also use their BBQ outside that is sheltered from the wind. Free entrance. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00.

• Krogedal Gårdsdrift. We met the friendly farmer behind this delicious cheese at a farmers market one time and he said “come visit one time, we are located “just above” Sandnes”. I think that is one way of explaining it but also not (stated in the most kind way possible). If you are looking to drive through beautiful scenery with a destination that sells yummy, local farm food, this is one stop for you. We loved it! Can also be combined with what is said to be a beautiful hike.

• NIK. A relaxed vibe restaurant along the main road on Jæren that serves delicious French food with local ingredients. They also have a small play corner for the youngest. Enjoy!!

• Line Gårdsutsalg. Lots of local food, a sandbox, and animals right outside. I hardly go on a trip to Jæren without buying their eggs (if it’s Sunday, I buy them at Jerseymeieriet). They say you can’t taste the difference between eggs, but “I beg to differ.” These eggs are better, yellower and so it is!

Hmm, I have to admit the weather we had this past weekend isn’t exactly my favorite kind of weather (even though I’ve basically brainwashed myself into liking rain). That’s why I’m extra happy that the days are getting lighter and brighter :) I didn’t manage to do everything I had planned, but we did make it to the open gymnastics hall in Ålgård and it was great fun. Great facilities, skilled instructors, and several thousand kcal burned off by my little ones.

This coming weekend is a real treat because it’s Kortreist Day, a day that celebrates some of our local everyday heroes: local food producers. And there’s certainly no shortage of places to visit. It’s healthy for all of us to see where our food actually comes from, but also to cheer on people like these. It takes blood, sweat, and tears to think differently. Many of the people who are most successful today (and are getting awards from all over the world) talk about how others laughed when they first started thinking in new and innovative ways. So be the kind of person who cheers people on - the world (and our food) becomes better because of it.

• Surprise dinner: As part of Stavanger Wine Festival this weekend, you can join this very cool concept. Which restaurant you end up at, which ingredients are chosen and who you’ll be dining with are all a surprise. Everything is revealed by SMS one hour before. Very cool. Saturday

• Kortreist Day: Experience local food directly from producers in the region. You can do everything from decorating chocolate at Fjorden Sjokolade in Hafrsfjord, celebrating the opening of the new farm shop at Hole Gård (the mayor arrives at 12:00), decorating your own juice or soda at Safteriet in Hillevåg and so much more. • Open Factory – Reime & Co: You’re invited inside the Reime factory (leading Norwegian manufacturer of agricultural equipment) to see the machines and how things are built. I LOVE a good behind-the-scenes tour and getting insight into how things are made. Free entry. From 11:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Open Day - CityGarage: This place is the region’s largest neighborhood garage, and this weekend they’re hosting an open day with free bike service. How generous! They’re also promising other activities. From 12:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Sandnesløpet 2026: If you’re looking for a sporty challenge this weekend, there’s a race happening in Sandnes. Everything from a 400-meter race for kids to a half marathon. It’s still not too late to sign up. More info here.

• Storhaug Rideklubb: Right in the middle of Storhaug (!) there’s actually a riding club, and this weekend they’re hosting a demonstration with the opportunity for kids to try riding afterwards. Very limited parking available, so it’s recommended to park at Godalen Upper Secondary School. From 12:00 to 14:00. More info here.

• Ganekamp: Three wine experts will try to convince you that they have the best wine pairing for a four-course dinner. You decide who succeeds. I love the concept. From 19:00. More info here.

Sunday

• Hiking Cabin Concerts in Sandnes and Sola: This year there will be 27(!) concerts at the day-trip cabins around the region. This weekend there’s one at Stokkihytten in Sandnes (from 13:00) and one at Solabu in Sola (from 15:00). What a great concept. Free. More info here.

• Easter egg hunt: Dysleksi Jæren invites everyone to an Easter egg hunt at Hanabergmarka in Nærbø. A fun activity in a great location. There will also be an opportunity to bbq bring-your-own food. From 14:00 to 17:00. Free, but registration is required. More info here.

All weekend

• “Heila helgå” theatre festival: Sola Kulturhus invites you to a full weekend of theatre. There are performances for all ages, from Emil to Annie to Hiv og Hoi, and you can choose how many shows you want to attend. Children: 75 NOK, adults: 150 NOK. Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00. More info here.

• Market at Tungenes Lighthouse: Made in Rogaland is hosting a market and café, and there will also be mini concerts both days. Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Kryddergarden. A local herb producer located at Horpestad in Klepp. Is there anything better than fresh herbs when cooking? They elevate everything, both taste and looks wise. I’ve wanted to visit this place for a long time and now it’s finally open for the season again. Open weekdays from 09:00 to 15:00.

This weekend delivered! Checked out some of the Livsgledefestival at Bryne (LOVE this annual concept they going on) and finally had a chance to taste the fish and chips in Sirevåg at Fiskerfruen (YUMMY!). Rounded of the weekend at a wheel chair rugby in Sandnes and wow what a sport! Inspiring and action-filled!

Every weekend it amazes me that all corners of this region has something new to offer. My hope is that this newsletter offers that to you too. • Fairytale performance at Lundehaugen: Students from Lundehaugen lower secondary school invite you to a mini performance where you’ll experience beloved fairytales through drama, dance, and song. From 12:00 to 12:45. Free. More info here.

• Familieyoga Ålgård: An event focused on no cell phones (which those who know me well know I love), play, movement, and yoga. From 11:00 to 12:00. Registration required. More info here.

• Ingeniørdagen (Engineering Day): Vitenfabrikken invites everyone to a day dedicated to creating enthusiasm for science, where people of all ages can join. From 11:30 to 16:30. Regular admission ticket. More info here.

• Magic show Randaberg: A show full of magic, humor, and surprises with magician Daniel Larsen, “Master of Magic.” From 14:00 to 15:30. Free, but tickets must be reserved.More info here.

• Norwegian Championship in full-contact karate: 195 participants (of all ages) will compete in karate at Timehallen, and everyone is welcome to watch. I love things like this! From 09:30 to 17:30. Free entry. More info here.

• Fashion Design and Fashion Photography workshop: Oh how I wish I was in the ages 13 to 20 and could join this two workshops. Imagine getting to learn fashion design from scratch and then how to capture it from professionals. From 12:00 to 16:00. Free but registration needed. More info here.

• Open gymnastics hall: My kids always have extra energy on Sunday mornings, so I love anything that provides an indoor place to burn some of it off. Drop-in gym hall for children aged 2–5. From 11:00 to 15:00. More info here.

• Mummitrollet 80 år Sølvberget: Two of Sølvberget’s best storytellers celebrate Tove Jansson’s magical universe during the Søndagsbarn program this Sunday. Free, but tickets required. From 14:00 to 14:30. More info here.

• Kartlegging med Jærsoppen: Join a trip to Lundsneset and help map the mysterious mushroom Judas’s Ear. Explore nature, record findings, and learn how the mushroom spreads. Free, but registration required. From 11:00–14:00. More info here.

• Kreftforeningens innsamlingsaksjon: The Cancer Society’s annual volunteer fundraising effort takes place this Sunday. You can contribute as a neighborhood collector, donate online, or support those who come to your door. More info here.

• Spring Concerts: The Norwegian Choir Association invites you to concerts for charitable purposes in Sandnes kirke, Hetland kirke, and in Sola kirke. Different choirs and programs at each venue. Free and no registration needed. From 18:00. See links for more info.

• Yogadag Heimehos: Seven different yoga sessions, each lasting around 45–50 minutes. You can join the entire day or choose parts of it. Sounds like a wonderful way to end the weekend. From 10:00 to 17:00. Registration required. More info here.

• Antikkmesse Voll: One of the longest-running fairs in the region. Antiques, interior items, and a bit of everything in between for sale. Personally on a hunt for a vintage bracelet. More info here.

• Solsiå festivalen 2026: As mentioned many times before, I’m not a beer drinker, but I love tasting my way to a favorite of almost anything. This festival features more than 12 breweries presenting their best selections. Friday and Saturday from 18:00 to 23:00. More info here.

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Jonsahuset. As a true Jæren fan, I often dream of going away for a weekend and waking up by the sea. This historic house offers exactly that, right next to a beautiful beach and Hå Gamle Prestegård.

• A good stop anytime: Line Gårdsutsalg. Lots of local food, a sandbox, and animals right outside. I hardly go on a trip to Jæren without buying their eggs (if it’s Sunday, I buy them at Jerseymeieriet). They say you can’t taste the difference between eggs, but “I beg to differ.” These eggs are better, yellower and so it is!

Let me just say it right away: if there is one thing you should do in life, it is to organize a “blåtur” (directly translated to blue trip it is a trip that only the host knows the destination) for someone you love! We had an absolutely fantastic trip filled with memories for a lifetime. Granted, it was not here in the region (we went to the place where “all roads lead”). But since my original plan was more local, I have now found even more places I want to explore in Stavanger and the surrounding area.

We wrapped up the holiday at Brekkotunet (see A good stop anytime) by building a bumble bee house and making stick bread over the fire in snow and sunshine (!), followed by hot dogs at Håland Kjøtt and the playground there. So many magical moments!

There is a lot happening this weekend, from the Livsglede Festival in Bryne (the name meaning “joy of life” alone makes me happy!) to a Pippi workshop and nature experiences. And since it is International Women’s Day on Sunday, there are of course several events marking the occasion. As usual, you can’t possibly fit everything in. Just the way I like it! This is my weekly newsletter, sent out every Wednesday (nyhetsbrev på norsk her). My philosophy in life: every place in the world has something exciting happening. I believe there is always something to experience, no matter where you are (in fact, I’m willing to bet I can find something for you no matter where in the world you are reading from*). Sometimes it is big events, other times small experiences that make a weekend memorable. Everything I pick out is something I am considering doing myself, with or without two small children.

These are my tips for things to do in Stavanger and beyond this weekend:

• Women and Wine: In honor of International Women’s Day, you are invited to an evening “wine show” where you will taste your way through five wines. Sounds pretty great, right? From 19:00. More info here.

• Skrei Evening at Slottet: There is fish and then there is skrei. YUM! If you are already heading to the mountains, I can’t imagine a better start than a three-course dinner at Slottet celebrating this special Arctic cod. From 19:00. More info here.

Saturday

• The Fairytale Mystery at Madla Library: A performance about a lost fairytale that is being hunted down and along the way you will meet princesses, witches, and magic. So cozy! From 11:00 to 11:30. Free, but registration required. More info here.

• Super Saturday: I have written about this before and still haven’t managed to go. Expect bouncy castles, inflatable slides, balloon animals, face painting, hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, and play. This time there is also a show at 13:00. The goal is to create a space where families from different backgrounds can find shared joy and belonging (love this!). Free and no registration required. From 12:00 to 14:00. More info here.

• Police in Uniform Reading at the Sandnes Library: Sandnes invites children to a storytime led by the police. Open to everyone, but especially suited for ages 3–6. Free. From 12:00 to 12:30. More info here.

• Music Gathering for Little Ones: The wonderful (!) Tine Suman Hodne invites children aged 0–3 to a cozy music session focused on musical joy and community. Free, but registration required. From 13:00 to 14:00. More info here.

• Pippi at Sola Culture House: A craft workshop inspired by Pippi Longstocking at Sola Kulturhus. Free. From 12:00 to 14:00. More info here.

• Women’s World Cup Qualifier: Some of the world’s best football talents (like Ada Hegerberg, Caroline Graham Hansen, and Signe Gaupset) are coming to Lyse Arena. Norway vs. Germany. Do I know much about football/soccer? No. Do I enjoy cheering? Yes! Heia, heia! Kickoff at 18:00. Tickets and more info here.

• Taste of Bryne – Livsgledesløyfa 2026: I LOVE this concept. So if you have the chance, go on my behalf because I can’t make it this time. You will get to eat and drink your way through several different spots in Bryne. Eight courses and eleven drink units are included in the price. From 14:00–19:30. More info here.

• Sunday for Kids – Kite Workshop: Make your own kite with the help of kite builder Sveinung Dybvig and other skilled helpers. Free, but registration required. From 12:30 to 13:30 (more info here) and 14:00 to 15:00 (more info here).

• International Women’s Day: The Women of Afghanistan: Poet Mozhgan Faramenesh will be in conversation with journalist and author Arild Inge Olsson about women’s lack of rights in her home country. Free, but registration required. From 12:15 to 13:15. More info here.

• Joik Workshop: A few weeks ago it was Sámi National Day, and I couldn’t find any events to share. But on my sister’s recommendation, I watched NRK’s Sámi National Day concert and I absolutely recommend it to everyone. Beautiful music and joik (the traditional sámi sing form and one of Europes oldest vocal traditions) that you can watch here. If it inspires you to learn joik yourself, this workshop is for you: an introductory course where you will learn about the function of joik, vocal techniques, joik syllables, its history, and different traditions. All weekend

• Livsglede Festival Bryne: An annual festival in Bryne focused on joy of life for all ages. Can it get any better than that? The whole weekend is packed with things to do, from blues music for children, fire shows, free food, theatre performances, art walks, to ice bathing in Lake Melsvatn. Something for absolutely everyone. Full program here.

• Norwegian League Wheelchair Rugby: Come cheer on talented athletes in what’s been called the world’s toughest parasport. Rolling Thunder is Sandnes’ local team, with players from across Nord-Jæren. Matches Saturday at 10:00, 13:00, and 16:00; Sunday at 09:00, 12:00, and 15:00. Free. More info here.

• Volunteer Sewing Workshop at Vitenfabrikken: This weekend there is a sewing workshop aimed at improving women’s health in developing countries where access to sanitary products is limited. During museum opening hours March 7–8. You are invited to join and sew (more info here) or donate directly to the organization behind it (more info here).

This week’s tips

• Place I want to try: Rott. Ever since watching an episode from this island on Where No One Would Think to Live (a NRK show I have followed devotedly no matter where I have lived in the world), I have wanted to visit. Imagine that just 3 km from Tananger, you can experience a completely different world. If anyone has a boat and wants to join, let me know. I’m ready!

• A good stop anytime: Friluftstunet Brekko. Now that I finally got a chance to go there, I know now it is worth visiting anytime. The drive through stunning nature quickly makes you forget where you are in the world. When there is snow, there is even a lit sledding hill, wow, pure luxury! The warming cabin is open on Sundays, and there is also a shelter and grill pan you can use whenever you like. Absolutely recommend!
