This week I made doughnuts.

I coloured with my kids. Watched movies in the middle of the day. Sat in rooms with no agenda and no outcome and no deliverable waiting on the other side.

And before you say it, no…

This isn’t another “rest and recharge” post.

I know you’ve read that one a hundred times and it didn’t change anything.

This is something different.

The highest performers I’ve ever been around, the ones genuinely operating at a level most people only talk about, they all do something that looks irresponsible from the outside.

They disappear.

Not on vacation, or at a spa. Not optimizing their sleep with a $400 sleep tracker.

They step completely outside of who they are professionally and spend real time being someone else entirely. A parent. A hobbyist. A person who makes doughnuts on a Tuesday for absolutely no reason other than it sounded good.

They don’t do this because they’re lazy. They do it because they figured something out that most ambitious people spend years resisting.

You cannot think clearly about your life when you’re fully inside it.

“Don’t miss this!”

The problem with being a high achiever is that your identity and your output become the same thing. You stop being a person who does great work and start being the great work itself. And when that happens every moment of stillness or relaxation feels like falling behind.

Every unproductive hour feels like a betrayal of the momentum you’ve worked so hard to build.

So you fill it. With more content. More strategy. More planning. More optimizing.

And you wonder why nothing feels fresh anymore. Why the ideas that used to come easily now feel forced. Why you’re doing all the right things and still feel like you’re running on fumes.

It’s not burnout. It’s overexposure to yourself.

The version of you that’s going to solve your biggest problems, generate your best ideas, and lead with the kind of clarity that actually moves things forward, that version needs distance from the current one.

Doughnuts gave me that this week. Colouring outside the lines with my kids gave me that. Doing things with zero professional purpose gave me that.

And my mind has never felt clearer.

3 Ways To Disappear Intentionally This Week:

1. Do something with your hands that has zero strategic value.
Cook. Build. Draw. Garden. Bake something ridiculous. The goal is to get your brain working in a completely different mode. Not consuming. Not planning. Just making something physical and real with zero expectation attached to it. Your best ideas will show up here. Not because you were looking for them. Because you finally stopped blocking them with busyness.

2. Spend two hours being someone’s anything other than a leader.
Not a boss. Not a brand. Not a speaker, founder, executive, or entrepreneur. Just a parent, a friend, a partner, a human being with no agenda. Two hours. This week. Full presence, no phone, no half attention. You’ll come back to your work feeling like someone hit a reset button you didn’t know existed.

3. Protect one full day this month with nothing on it.
Not a light day. Nothing. No meetings, no calls, no content, no strategy. A day where you have absolutely no professional identity to perform. Most high achievers can’t do this without feeling guilty. That guilt is the exact sign you need it most. The day feels unproductive. What it’s actually doing is giving the best version of you room to breathe and show back up.

You don’t need more hustle right now.

You need more distance from it.

The next level you’re chasing isn’t hiding in another strategy session. It’s waiting on the other side of actually stepping away long enough to remember who you are when nobody’s watching and nothing’s due.

Go disappear for a little while.

Come back dangerous.

Last week my wife and I told the kids to grab their backpacks.

We were taking them to their grandparents house. Routine. Normal. Nothing special.

My youngest, seven years old, grabbed his bag, looked up with full confidence and said

“YES. We’re going to South Korea!”

Me & My wife: “……?”

Not a question. A statement. An absolute conviction that today was the day we were spontaneously flying to South Korea because his parents said grab your bags and in his world that’s a completely reasonable conclusion.

He wasn’t being silly. He genuinely believed it. Because nobody had taught him yet that dreams need timelines and budgets and careful planning and about fourteen reasons why now isn’t quite the right moment.

We did not go to South Korea.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about him the rest of the day. The ease of it. The zero hesitation. The complete absence of obstacle between wanting something and believing it was already happening.

I aspire to that. Genuinely.

A few mornings later I was sitting with my other son, nine years old, working on something I’ve been quietly building for a while now…

My journey back to tea.

Sixteen years I’ve been in this industry. Built something real with it. And somewhere along the way the craft of it, the pure sensory joy of just sitting with a cup and paying attention, got buried under the business of it.

So I’m finding my way back. Slowly. Intentionally.

That morning my son sat with me. I handed him a cup and asked him one simple question.

What do you smell?

He didn’t pause. Didn’t search for the right vocabulary. Didn’t worry about whether his answer was technically correct or professionally articulate.

He just said what was true.

And it was better. More honest, more vivid, more accurate than half the tasting notes I’ve written in sixteen years of doing this.

No training. No overthinking. No filter between what he experienced and what he said.

Just pure, unguarded attention.

That’s the whole craft really. Of tea. Of leadership. Of building anything worth building.

Paying attention. Saying what’s true. Seeing what’s actually there instead of what you’ve been conditioned to expect.

Kids do this without trying. Because nobody has taught them yet to second guess their instincts, dress up their observations in the right language, or wait until they’re sure before they speak.

We used to do it too.

Somewhere between growing up and getting serious we learned to filter everything. Our ideas. Our instincts. Our dreams. Our honest first reactions to things. We learned to run everything through the question of whether it was practical, professional, realistic, or ready enough to say out loud.

And in doing that we lost something. Something that was actually one of our greatest advantages.

The ability to just see things clearly and say them honestly without all the noise in between.

3 Ways To Get It Back Starting This Week:

1. Ask a child in your life about your biggest current challenge. Not for the answer. For the question they ask back. Kids don’t carry the assumptions we do. They ask the obvious question we stopped asking because we assumed we already knew the answer. That question, the simple obvious one we’ve been too sophisticated to ask ourselves, is almost always the one that unlocks everything. Sit down with a kid this week, explain your challenge in simple terms, and pay close attention to what they ask you first. It’ll cut straight to the thing you’ve been overthinking.

2. Give yourself a “no filter” five minutes before your next big decision. Before you run it through every practical consideration, every risk assessment, every “but what about” in your head, give yourself five unfiltered minutes to just say what you actually think, feel, and want. Write it down without editing. No judgment. No practicality filter. Just pure honest first response. Then look at what you wrote before you make your decision. More often than not your unfiltered instinct knows something your carefully considered analysis is trying to talk you out of.

3. Say the simple thing out loud. In your next meeting, your next pitch, your next important conversation, resist the urge to make it sophisticated. Say the simple version first. The one that a seven year old could understand. Watch what happens to the energy in the room when complexity gets replaced with clarity. The most powerful communicators in any room aren’t the ones with the most impressive vocabulary. They’re the ones brave enough to say the obvious true thing that everyone else was too polished to admit.

I’m finding my way back to tea.

And what I didn’t expect was that two of my greatest teachers along the way would be under four feet tall and have absolutely no idea they were teaching me anything.

My youngest packed his bags for South Korea on a Tuesday with zero hesitation and zero doubt.

My oldest described a cup of tea with more honesty and precision than a decade and a half of industry experience gave me.

Both of them saw something I’d stopped seeing.

Not because they’re smarter. Because they haven’t learned yet to get in their own way.

Neither of us is too far gone to find that again.

But we have to want it enough to stop overthinking and start paying attention.

The clearest thinking available to you right now might be sitting at your kitchen table eating cereal with their hands.

Listen to them.

About a month ago I made a decision I was completely convinced was genius.

I rebranded my entire speaking business. New messaging. New positioning. New website. The whole thing. I went all in on what I believed was the most timely, most relevant, most needed conversation happening in leadership right now.

I called it “The Most Human Thing Left.”

The idea was simple and I thought obvious. We’re living in the AI era. Everything is being automated, optimized, and digitized. And the things that make us irreplaceable, trust, connection, belonging, empathy, those are the things I help leaders protect and build. I wanted event planners, conference organizers, and leadership teams to know that I wasn’t just keeping up with the times. I was speaking directly to the most urgent human challenge inside them.

I was fired up. I launched it. I waited for the response.

And the response I got was not what I expected.

My agent called me.

Confused.

Other agents reached out. Also confused.

Clients who had known my work for years suddenly weren’t sure what I actually did anymore.

And the feedback, when I really listened to it, was painfully consistent.

They thought I’d become the AI guy.

Not the human connection guy using AI as the context. The AI guy. The one who talks about technology and automation and the future of work in a way that puts me in a completely different category than the one I’ve spent fifteen years building.

That was not my intention. Not even close.

But here’s the thing about intention. It doesn’t matter nearly as much as we think it does.

Jeff Bezos said it better than I ever could. Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room. And what people were saying about me when I wasn’t in the room was that Daniel Lewis had pivoted to AI.

I hadn’t pivoted to anything. I was trying to make my existing message more relevant. But that’s not how it landed. And how it lands is the only thing that actually counts.

This is the communication lesson that most leaders learn the hard way

And I’m apparently no exception.

It doesn’t matter how clear the vision is in your head. It doesn’t matter how much passion went into building it. It doesn’t matter how logical it feels when you’re the one who created it.

What matters is whether the person on the receiving end understands it the same way you do.

And most of the time? They don’t.

Not because they’re not paying attention. Because you’re too close to it. You know too much about what you meant to see clearly what you actually said.

I was so deep in the idea of “keeping humanity alive in the AI era” that I couldn’t see how someone encountering it cold would read it. To me it was obvious. To them it was confusing. And confused people don’t book speakers. Confused teams don’t follow visions. Confused customers don’t buy.

Confusion is silent. It doesn’t argue with you. It just quietly walks away.

Incase you’re wondering…

I fixed it. Pulled back. Repositioned. Went back to what was always true about my brand and made sure the message reflected that clearly instead of cleverly…

Still used a bit of Ai to drop a few lbs in the face though 🫣 (Take a peek)

But I want to be honest about what it cost me.

Time. Energy. Momentum. A period where my own positioning was working against me instead of for me.

And all of it was avoidable if I had done one thing before I launched.

Asked the right people if they understood it.

Not the people who love me. Not the people who were going to be supportive regardless. The people who would tell me the truth. The ones who would read it cold, with fresh eyes, and give me their honest first impression before I built an entire brand around an assumption.

I skipped that step. And I paid for it.

3 Ways To Make Sure Your Message Actually Lands:

1. Test your message on someone who will tell you the truth before you tell the world. Not your biggest supporter. Not your business partner who’s been in the idea with you from the beginning. Find someone who has zero emotional investment in whether it works and ask them one question. What do you think I do based on what you just read? Their answer will tell you everything. If it matches what you intended, you’re ready. If it doesn’t, you just saved yourself a very expensive lesson.

2. Separate what you meant from what you said. Before any important communication, whether it’s a rebrand, a vision rollout, a team announcement, or a strategic pivot, write down what you intend to communicate in one clear sentence. Then read what you actually wrote or said and ask if a stranger would arrive at that same sentence. Most of the time there’s a gap. That gap is where confusion lives. Find it before your audience does.

3. Listen for confusion the way you listen for applause. Most leaders pay close attention to positive signals and miss the quiet ones. Confused people rarely tell you they’re confused. They nod. They say “interesting.” They go quiet. They stop engaging. This week pay attention to the moments where the energy drops slightly after you’ve communicated something important. That drop is feedback. It’s your audience telling you something didn’t land the way you thought it did. Get curious about it instead of moving past it. Ask what questions people have. Create space for the confusion to surface before it becomes a problem you find out about too late.

The honest truth.. Which Sucks!

I’m a communication speaker. I literally get paid to help leaders communicate more clearly and effectively with their teams.

And I still got this wrong.

Which tells me two things.

1. Nobody is immune to this.

2. And the leaders who catch it fastest are the ones willing to be honest about it when it happens instead of doubling down on something that isn’t working because they’re too proud to pivot.

Your message is only as powerful as the clarity it lands with.

Not the clarity you intended. The clarity they received.

Those are two very different things. And the gap between them is where most leadership communication quietly falls apart.

Check your gap. Before the market checks it for you.

A few days ago I walked into LegoLand in downtown New York City with my kids.

And I stood there. Just watched.

Run. Touch. Explore. Build. Break. Build again. Touch again. Run again. Smile. Laugh. Imagine. Act. Entertain. Live.

The easy observation is “wow look at kids being kids.”

That’s not what I thought.

I stood there watching and thought, wow. What a beautiful and powerful thing we’ve lost.

Not the Lego. Not the colours. Not the noise.

The permission to play.

What happened to us…

Somewhere between growing up and getting serious we made a collective decision that play was the enemy of productivity. That fun was the opposite of professional. That if something looked like a good time it probably wasn’t good for business.

And so we built cultures that reflect that decision.

Cultures where nobody takes chances because taking chances looks like playing around. Where curiosity gets quietly discouraged because asking too many questions looks like you don’t know what you’re doing. Where creativity gets scheduled into a one hour brainstorm once a quarter and then immediately filtered through seventeen layers of approval until it’s unrecognizable.

We even weaponized the language.

“Stop playing around.”
“Don’t play with me.”
“What does this look like, a playground?”

We say these things because we mean business. Because we want people to know the stakes are real and the work matters.

But here’s what we accidentally communicated instead.

Curiosity isn’t welcome here. Experimentation is risky. And if you try something and it doesn’t work immediately, that’s not learning. That’s failure.

The result? Stale. Uninspiring. Safe to the point of suffocation.

And then leaders sit in strategy meetings wondering why nobody brings fresh ideas anymore.

What I observed…

Here’s what I know from watching my kids at LegoLand and from fifteen years of building teams and standing on stages in front of organizations navigating real change.

Play isn’t the opposite of work. It’s the ingredient that makes work actually work.

Every trait we associate with high performing teams, creativity, curiosity, resilience, collaboration, the willingness to try something and fail and try again, every single one of those traits is native to play. Kids don’t have to be taught these things. They come standard. We just spend years of “professional development” quietly training them out.

I built an entire keynote around this called The 3 Ingredients Every Culture Needs To Evolve and Elevate. People. Purpose. Play.

Not because play is a nice to have. Because without it the other two don’t work nearly as well as they should.

When your people feel safe enough to play, to experiment, to be curious, to fail without it defining them, that’s when real momentum starts. That’s when change stops feeling like a threat and starts feeling like an opportunity. That’s when your culture stops being something you manage and starts being something people actually want to be part of.

3 Ways To Bring Play Back Into Your Culture This Week:

1. Start your next meeting with a two minute build challenge.
Seriously. Give everyone in the room something to build with. Pens, paper clips, sticky notes, whatever’s on the table. Give them two minutes to build something that represents how they’re feeling about the current project or challenge. No rules. No right answer. Then spend five minutes letting people share what they built and why. What you’ll get in those seven minutes is more honest, more creative, and more energizing than the first thirty minutes of any standard agenda. Play unlocks things in people that PowerPoint simply cannot.

2. Create a “bad ideas welcome” space.
Most organizations accidentally punish bad ideas by only celebrating the ones that work. This week create a dedicated space, a channel, a whiteboard, a five minute slot in a meeting, where bad ideas are not just tolerated but genuinely celebrated. The rule is simple. The worse the idea the better. Laugh at them. Build on them. See where they go. What happens when people feel safe enough to say the ridiculous thing out loud is that the brilliant thing hiding behind it finally gets said too. Permission to play badly is what unlocks playing well.

3. Let someone lead something they’ve never led before.
Play is fundamentally about exploration. Trying something new without knowing exactly how it’ll turn out. This week give someone on your team ownership of something completely outside their usual lane. Not because they’re the most qualified. Because they’re curious about it. Watch what happens when someone gets to explore instead of just execute. The energy is completely different. The investment is completely different. And the results will surprise you in the best possible way.

My kids didn’t need a strategy session to figure out how to have fun at LegoLand.

They just walked in and started.

No fear of looking silly. No worry about whether their build was good enough. No hesitation about trying something they’d never tried before.

They played. And in playing they learned, collaborated, failed, adjusted, created, and thrived in ways that most adult teams spend thousands of dollars on consultants trying to manufacture.

The most powerful thing happening at LegoLand has nothing to do with Lego.

It’s the reminder of who we were before we decided that playing around wasn’t serious enough for the work we were trying to do.

Bring it back. Your culture is waiting for it.

Think about where you were five years ago.

The things you were figuring out. The uncertainty you were navigating. The version of success you were chasing that felt so far away it almost seemed irresponsible to want it.

Now look at where you are.

You built things. You survived things. You became things that the five years ago version of you would have genuinely struggled to believe were possible.

And yet.

Here you are. Still hesitating. Still waiting. Still talking yourself out of the next thing with reasons that sound remarkably more polished and professional than they used to.

That’s the sneaky thing about growth…

Your excuses grow with you.

They used to sound like “I don’t have enough experience.” Now they sound like “the timing isn’t quite right” and “I need to be more strategic about this” and “I want to make sure I’m fully prepared before I move.”

Same fear. Better vocabulary. And honestly? Way more convincing.

The five years ago version of you had rougher excuses but more audacity. They jumped before they were ready because they didn’t know enough to be scared of everything that could go wrong.

You do know now. And that knowledge, that hard earned, real world, been through it knowledge, is somehow making you smaller instead of bolder.

That’s not wisdom. That’s experience being used against yourself.

So, let’s fix this today!

Write down the decision you’ve been sitting on the longest. The one with the most sophisticated excuse attached to it. Then ask yourself one question.

If the five years ago version of me heard this excuse, would they believe it or would they just go ahead and do the thing anyway?

You already know the answer.

Go do the thing.

I remember the exact feeling.

Sitting in a franchise planning meeting for Domino’s Pizza. Stable income. Clear path. A future that made complete sense on paper and felt completely wrong in my chest.

And I kept thinking, if I don’t leave now I might never leave.

So I left.

Not to something polished or planned or ready. I left to a kettle, a dream, and a folding table at a garage sale selling $5 teas to people who were mostly just being polite.

No investor or safety net. No guarantee that any of it was going to work.

Just a decision that the risk of not trying was more dangerous than the risk of failing.

That one decision changed everything.

But here’s what I want to be honest about.

It wasn’t just once.

I’ve made that same terrifying leap more times than I can count. Each one felt just as uncertain as the first.

I launched a marketing agency because people kept telling me our own marketing was impressive. No waiting list of clients or agency experience. Just the logic that if I could do it for myself maybe I could do it for others.

I got married at 22, without a stable job or my own home. No investments or version of ready that the world would recognize. Just absolute certainty about the person I was choosing and the life I wanted to build with her.

I taught myself to invest by actually investing. Made mistakes that still sting when I think about them. (Quick tip.. You only lose when you realize your losses (If you know you know lol) But the lessons those mistakes gave me are worth more than any course I could have taken.

I opened multiple shops and pop up markets simultaneously, five locations to test a franchise model, building the plane on the way down from jumping out of it.

I joined two boards of directors before I even knew what minutes in a meeting were. Sat in rooms completely out of my depth and figured it out. Eventually became chairman.

Every single time the voice in my head said you’re not ready. Every single time I jumped anyway.

And here’s what I learned from every single one of those leaps.

Waiting to be ready is the longest, most expensive, most comfortable way to never actually live the life you keep saying you want.

Ready isn’t a feeling that arrives.

It’s a story we tell ourselves to justify staying where we are. And staying where we are feels safe right up until the moment we realize that safety was quietly costing us everything we actually wanted.

The people I’ve watched thrive, really thrive, not just succeed on paper but actually feel alive in what they’re building, they all made one decision at some point that everyone around them thought was too soon, too risky, too much.

They jumped before the net appeared.

And the jumping? That’s what built the net.

3 Ways To Make Your Own Leap This Week:

1. Name the thing you’re waiting to be ready for.
Write it down. The business you haven’t started. The career move you haven’t made. The conversation you haven’t had. The investment you haven’t pulled the trigger on. Now ask yourself honestly, what would actually be different if you waited another six months? Another year? In most cases the answer is nothing except more time spent on the wrong side of the decision. Clarity doesn’t come from waiting. It comes from moving and adjusting as you go.

2. Find the smallest version of the leap and take it this week.
I didn’t start with five locations. I started with a kettle and a garage sale. Or going back to my new podcast…

It’s me, my phone camera, my bedroom and my wife, that’s it. I decided to use what I had within my reach.

Every big leap has a smallest possible version that costs you almost nothing except the comfort of staying still. What’s yours? One conversation. One application. One phone call. One decision made out loud instead of kept quietly in your head. Take the smallest version of the thing this week. Not because it’ll change everything immediately. Because momentum is built one small irreversible decision at a time.

3. Reframe what failure actually costs you.
Most people are so focused on what they could lose by trying that they never stop to calculate what they’re losing by not trying. Time. Energy. Confidence that quietly erodes the longer you stay somewhere that doesn’t fit. The version of yourself that only exists on the other side of that leap. Sit down this week and actually write out both sides. What’s the real cost of trying and failing? And what’s the real cost of never trying at all? For most people that second list is far more terrifying than the first. Let it be the thing that finally moves you.

The truth and nothing but the truth…

I’m not going to tell you every leap worked out perfectly. Some of them were messy. Some of them hurt. Some of them taught me lessons I would have preferred to learn a cheaper way.

But not one of them, not a single leap I’ve ever taken, was worse than the feeling of almost staying.

Almost staying is where dreams go to become regrets.

The most dangerous risk you’ll ever take isn’t the leap.

It’s standing at the edge long enough that you start to convince yourself the edge is actually fine.

It’s not fine. You know it’s not fine.

Jump.

The World Cup ended yesterday.

And within hours, the narrative had already shifted.

“Messi didn’t perform at his best.”
”Messi looked tired.”
”Messi’s era is over.”
”Maybe it was already over before the tournament even started.”

And I sat with that for a minute. Because it bothered me in a way I couldn’t immediately name.

Here was a man who gave everything. Literally everything. Decades of his life dedicated to a sport, to a standard of excellence, to a version of the beautiful game that most players only ever dream of touching.

A man who carried an entire nation on his back for years, who finally lifted that World Cup trophy in 2022 in what felt like one of the most emotionally complete moments in sporting history.

And now, because one tournament didn’t go the way we wanted, suddenly the conversation sounds like none of it happened.

That’s not a soccer problem. That’s a people problem, and there’s a lot we can dissect and learn from this.

We do this constantly. In business. In leadership. In life.

We celebrate people loudly on the way up and quietly erase them on the way down. We measure contribution by the last result instead of the full body of work. We treat legacy like a live scoreboard instead of a permanent record.

And the message that sends, not just to the person at the end of their run but to everyone watching, is terrifying.

It says your value here is conditional. It says we’re with you when you’re winning. It says the moment you stop delivering at the highest level we ever saw from you, we reserve the right to rewrite the story of everything you built.

If you led a team that way, you’d lose every great person you ever had. Nobody pours everything into something they can’t trust to remember them fairly when the season ends.

And then there’s Lamine Yamal.

Nineteen years old. Lighting up the biggest stage in the world with a kind of fearless, joyful, electric brilliance that made everyone watching lean forward in their seats.

The world is already crowning him. Already writing his future. Already handing him the torch.

And here’s the thing. He deserves every bit of it. He’s extraordinary.

But watch how we talk about him right now compared to how we’re talking about Messi. Watch the language. Watch the energy. Watch how quickly we pivot from one to the other as if the handoff is clean and the past is simply replaced by the present.

Yamal isn’t Messi’s replacement. He’s Messi’s continuation. The reason a nineteen year old can walk onto that stage with that kind of confidence, that kind of belief that extraordinary is possible, is because people like Messi spent decades proving it was.

Legacy doesn’t die when the last game ends. It lives in everyone who watched and decided to become something because of what they saw.

That’s not a footnote. That’s the whole point.

So what does any of this have to do with you?

Everything.

Because you’re either building something worth remembering or you’re leading in a way that conditions your people to believe their worth expires with their last win. And both of those are choices you’re making right now whether you realize it or not.

3 Things Worth Taking Into Your Week:

1. Audit how you talk about people who are no longer at their peak.
The colleague who used to be the top performer and isn’t anymore. The mentor who built something great that’s now showing its age. The team member whose best days look different than they used to. Pay attention to the language you use about them when they’re not in the room. That language is the truest measurement of your leadership character. People who pour themselves into something need to know that the pouring meant something regardless of how the last chapter reads.

2. Find your Yamal and tell them what they’re standing on.
Somewhere in your world there’s someone younger, newer, just starting to find their brilliance, who has no idea how much of what they’re capable of was built by the people who came before them. Tell them. Specifically. Name the shoulders they’re standing on. Connect them to the legacy they’re inheriting. Because confidence built on context is unshakeable in a way that raw talent alone never is. Yamal is extraordinary. He’s also extraordinary in a world that Messi helped build. Both things are true and both things matter.

3. Build something today that you’d be proud of at the end of your run.
Not at the peak. Not when the results are undeniable and the crowd is loud. At the end. When the last result didn’t go the way you planned and the narrative is shifting and the world is already looking at the next shiny thing. What do you want the full body of work to say? Because that question, answered honestly and lived deliberately, is the only thing that actually protects your legacy from the people who’d reduce it to your last performance.

Messi’s era might be over.

But what he built, what he proved was possible, what he lit in the hearts of every kid who watched him and decided to believe in something bigger than what was in front of them, that doesn’t end with a tournament result.

Legacy isn’t a trophy. It’s a transfer.

And the fact that Yamal exists, that he plays the way he plays, that he walks onto the biggest stage in the world at nineteen years old looking like he belongs there, that is Messi’s legacy running in real time whether anyone acknowledges it or not.

How you treat people at the end of their run reveals everything about what you valued during it.

Make sure the people in your world know their contribution meant something before the final whistle blows.

I want to tell you about a room I walked into a few years ago.

Around the table sat senior executives from Coca Cola, Maple Lodge Farms, RBC, and several other corporations whose logos you’d recognize immediately. Combined experience, combined revenue, combined influence, it was wild.

And then there was me.

Founder of a small but growing tea shop in a mid-sized city. No Fortune 500 behind my name. No corner office. No decade long corporate pedigree to lean on.

By every conventional measure of who belongs in a room like that, I probably didn’t.

But here’s the thing. That’s not how I saw it.

I wasn’t there to talk about tea.

I was there to advocate for something I believed in so completely that the size of my company was completely irrelevant to the size of what I had to say.

I was fighting for young people with criminal records. Specifically, the ones who made a mistake when they were young, immature, still figuring out who they were — and were still being defined by that single moment years later. Automatically screened out of job applications. Quietly disqualified before they ever got a chance to show who they’d become.

I knew that story personally. Because in a different version of my life, I was that person.

And so I stood in that boardroom, surrounded by people with every credential I didn’t have, and I spoke with everything I had. Not because I was the most qualified person in the room. Because I was the most convicted one.

No notes. No PowerPoint. Just absolute clarity on why this mattered and who it was going to change if anyone around that table had the courage to act on it.

By the end of that meeting, multiple companies had committed to revisiting their hiring policies. Real conversations started that day about creating real opportunities for multi-barrier youth with positive track records of change.

Not because I outranked anyone in that room.

Because I out-believed them.

That’s what conviction does.

It doesn’t ask permission. It doesn’t wait for the right title or the right moment or the right level of experience before it speaks.

It just shows up. Fully. And it changes the temperature of every room it walks into.

Here’s what I’ve learned about conviction that most people get wrong. They think it’s something you either have or you don’t. Like it’s a personality trait. A natural gift. Something the loud, confident, extroverted people were born with and everyone else has to fake.

That’s not what conviction is.

Conviction is clarity plus courage. It’s knowing exactly what you believe, exactly why you believe it, and being willing to say it out loud even when the room is intimidating, even when you’re the smallest name at the table, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

And clarity plus courage? Both of those are buildable.

3 Ways To Build Conviction Starting This Week:

1. Find the thing you’d argue for even if it cost you something. Not the thing you believe when it’s safe and popular and everyone agrees. The thing you’d stand behind in a room full of people who don’t. That’s where your real conviction lives. This week sit down and write one belief you hold about your industry, your leadership, your community, or the world that you’ve been keeping at a comfortable volume. Then ask yourself honestly, am I saying this as loudly as I actually believe it? If the answer is no, that’s your starting point. Conviction that only shows up when it’s convenient isn’t conviction. It’s just opinion.

2. Walk into one room this week as if you already belong there. Not with arrogance. With certainty. There’s a massive difference. Arrogance is performing confidence you’re trying to convince others of. Certainty is knowing your perspective has value before anyone else confirms it. Pick one meeting, one conversation, one situation this week where you’d normally shrink a little, qualify your ideas a little, wait for someone else to validate the direction before you commit to it. Don’t do that this time. Walk in decided. Speak like your perspective matters because it does. See what the room does in response. It’ll surprise you.

3. Get clear on your “because” before you walk into any important room. Most people know what they want to say. Very few know why it matters beyond the surface level. Before your next important conversation, pitch, or presentation, ask yourself this one question. Why does this actually matter to the people I’m talking to and to the world beyond this room? Dig past the obvious answer. Keep asking why until you hit something that actually moves you. That’s your conviction. And when you speak from that place, something shifts in how people receive you. They stop evaluating your credentials and start feeling your certainty. Those are two completely different experiences for everyone in the room.

“Talent gets you considered.

Conviction gets you remembered.”

The most influential people I’ve ever encountered weren’t always the most experienced, the most credentialed, or the most polished. They were the ones who knew exactly what they believed and had the courage to say it clearly, even when the room was full of reasons not to.

You don’t need a bigger title to have a bigger impact.

You just need to be the most convicted person in the room.

And that? That starts before you ever walk through the door.

Pay attention to your words today.

“I’m not really a tech person.”
“I’ve never been good at that.”
“That’s just not how I work.”

Sounds harmless right?

It’s not. Every time you say something like that you’re not just making an observation. You’re issuing an instruction, to yourself and your brain. The crazy part is that, your brain is extremely loyal to you, so it follows those instructions without question.

It’s so sad to see…

I’ve watched people talk themselves out of opportunities they were completely qualified for. Even personal relationships, gone to shreds…

Not because the person lacked skill or experience or intelligence. Because the language running in the background of their mind was doing a quiet, relentless job of keeping them exactly where they were or worse.

The inverse is equally true and honestly way more exciting.

The people who seem to move through life with an almost unfair level of momentum, the ones who find opportunities in rooms where everyone else sees walls, they speak differently.

Not in that forced toxic positivity kind of way. Just more openly and more curiously, like the outcome hasn’t been decided yet.

“I haven’t figured that out yet” instead of “I can’t do that.”

“That’s interesting, tell me more” instead of “that’ll never work.”

“What would this look like if it actually went well” instead of “knowing my luck.”

Same situation. Completely different path forward.

Words also do something sneakier in how other people see you.

The leader who walks into a room and says “this is going to be a tough one” has already set the temperature before a single agenda item gets discussed.

The person who pitches their idea with “I don’t know if this is right but...” has undermined themselves before anyone else gets the chance to.

You’re constantly signalling to the room what to believe about you. Mostly unconsciously. With words you’ve been using so long they feel like facts.

They’re not facts. They’re habits. And habits can change.

3 Things You Can Start Today:

1. Do a language audit on yourself for 48 hours. Don’t change anything yet. Just notice. Pay attention to the words you reach for when things go sideways, when someone asks what you do, when you’re describing a challenge. Write down the phrases that keep showing up. You’ll see patterns you never noticed before because you’ve been saying them so long they became invisible. That list is one of the most honest mirrors you’ve ever looked into.

2. Replace one limiting sentence with an open question. Pick the phrase from your audit that stings the most. Now rewrite it as a question instead of a statement. “I’m terrible at selling” becomes “what would it look like if I got better at this?” “I never have enough time” becomes “where am I actually choosing to spend it?” Questions open doors. Declarations close them. One swap this week. See what shifts.

3. Change how you answer “how are you?” Most people answer on autopilot. Busy. Tired. Surviving. Fine. And they say it so often it starts to feel true even when it isn’t.

This week answer with something real and forward leaning. Something you’re genuinely excited about. Not fake, just intentional. Watch how the energy of the conversation changes immediately. Your words set the tone for every room you walk into and it starts with that one question.

The Facts

You’ve been handed the most powerful tool available to any human being and you’ve been using it on autopilot.

Your words shape what you believe is possible. What you go after. How people see you. What opportunities find their way to you and which ones quietly pass by.

None of that is fixed. All of it is a choice.

Coming Up…

I’m going to tell you something I share with every leader, but still struggle to do myself.

On stage, I talk a lot about presence.

I tell senior leaders, executives, founders, that their team needs to feel them there. Not just physically in the building, but actually present. Engaged. Available. Showing up in a way that says I’m with you, not just I’m paying you.

People come up to me after almost every keynote and tell me that message hit them hard. Some of them get a little emotional about it. And I mean every word of it when I say it.

Here’s the part that’s a little harder to say.

Sometimes I disappear for three weeks straight.

Flights. Hotels. Back to back engagements in city after city, the kind of stretch where the days blur together and you’re already thinking about the next gate before you’ve even left the last one.

And somewhere in the middle of that stretch, my own team is sitting there wondering where I went.

The exact thing I warn every leader in the room not to do to their people. (*Face palm*)

I used to feel like a fraud about this.

Like maybe I didn’t have the right to teach presence when my own calendar told a different story.

But I’ve started to see it differently.

The gap isn’t the problem. Pretending the gap doesn’t exist is.

Most leaders who teach something they personally struggle with either hide it or quietly stop teaching it altogether. I don’t think that’s the right move. I think the best way is to be honest about the tension and actually do something about it instead of pretending it isn’t there.

Because here’s what I’ve learned in the middle of my own contradiction.

Presence was never really about being in the room.

It was about whether your people feel like they matter to you, whether they can reach you, whether they know you’re thinking about them even when you’re three time zones away.

I can’t always be in the room.

Nobody with a demanding career can.

But I can absolutely be present in other ways. And honestly, wrestling with how to do that has taught me more about leadership than most of the keynotes I’ve delivered.

This isn’t a confession with a neat bowtie on it.

I’m still working through this.

Still adjusting. Still catching myself slipping back into the old pattern of out of sight, out of mind, especially during a heavy travel stretch.

B-B-B-B- BUT…

Below, I listed a few ideas I’ve been thinking through, ways to stay present even when I physically can’t be.

3 Ideas For Staying Present When You Can’t Be There:

1. Send the message that has nothing to do with work. Before leaving for a stretch of travel, send at least one message to someone on the team that has zero business purpose. A check in on something personal. A genuine question about how they’re doing. It takes thirty seconds and tells them I see you as a person, not just a function, even when I’m not physically around.

2. Leave something behind that proves you were thinking about them. A quick voice note or video before a big trip. Not a status update. Something specific to that person. An encouragement, a thank you for something they did recently, a heads up about something you’re excited for them to take on. It shows the thinking happened before you left, not just whenever you got around to it.

3. Build one non negotiable point of contact, no matter where you are. One specific time each week, no matter what city or time zone, where you’re actually reachable. Not “available” in theory. Actually reachable, phone in hand, full attention. It’s not about quantity. It’s about reliability. When people know exactly when they can count on you, the gaps in between feel a lot less like absence and more like rhythm.

I haven’t mastered any of these yet…

I’m still figuring it out in real time, same as anyone juggling a demanding schedule and a team that deserves better than silence.

So I’ll ask you directly.

Everyone shows up well when the room is full.

The big presentation. The important client meeting. The stage. The interview. Those moments come with an audience and a reason to perform, and most people rise to meet them. That’s not character. That’s incentive.

Character lives somewhere else entirely.

It lives in how you talk to the server who got your order wrong. How you respond to the email that didn’t need a fast reply but you sent a sharp one anyway. How you treat the assistant, the intern, the person who can do absolutely nothing for your career. It lives in the moment you think nobody’s paying attention.

Here’s the crazy thing we often forget, people are always paying attention. Just not in the way you think.

I’ve sat across from some incredibly successful people in my life. Founders, executives, public figures, people with serious influence and serious money. And the ones I respect most were never the ones who were impressive on stage.

They were the ones who were exactly the same person backstage as they were in front of the crowd. The ones who remembered the name of the person who set up the AV equipment. The ones who said thank you to the driver like they meant it. The ones who treated a closed door conversation with the same integrity as an open one.

That consistency, that’s the entire game. Not talent. Not charisma.

Consistency between who you are when it counts and who you are when nobody’s counting.

And the opposite is just as true.

I’ve met people who could light up a stage and completely shrink the moment the cameras turned off. People who were warm in public and cold the second there was nothing left to gain. You feel that. Everyone feels that eventually. And once people feel it, the reputation you spent years building starts quietly eroding in ways you can’t see until it’s too late.

Here’s what makes this so dangerous.

Reputation doesn’t crumble all at once. It erodes in small unnoticed moments, one at a time, until one day someone says something about you that doesn’t match the version of yourself you thought you were presenting.

You didn’t get caught lying. You just stopped being consistent. And inconsistency is its own kind of dishonesty.

The good news is the opposite is true too. You can build a genuinely extraordinary reputation, not by being impressive in the moments everyone’s watching, but by being exactly who you say you are in the moments nobody is.

3 Ways To Build A Reputation That Actually Holds Up:

1. Treat the person who (you think) can do nothing for you, exactly like the person who can do everything for you.
This week, pay close attention to how you behave with people who have zero professional value to offer you. The barista. The new hire. The person two levels below you on an org chart. Not because you’re performing kindness for an audience but because that’s exactly where your real character lives. If there’s a gap between how you treat people who matter to your career and people who don’t, that gap is the truest measurement of who you actually are.

2. Audit your private behaviour, not your public one.
Most people spend enormous energy managing their public image and almost none auditing their private one. This week ask yourself honestly, would the way I behave in private mortify me if it became public? The way you talk about people when they’re not in the room. The corners you cut when nobody would notice. The promises you make casually and forget just as casually. That private behaviour is the actual foundation everything else is built on. Fix it there first.

3. Do one generous thing this week that nobody will ever know about.
Not a public good deed. Not something you mention later in conversation. Something completely invisible. Help someone without telling anyone. Give credit privately instead of publicly. Show up for someone with zero intention of it ever being acknowledged. This single act recalibrates something important in you. It reminds you that your character doesn’t need an audience to be real. And the more often you practice that, the less your integrity depends on who happens to be watching.

The big moments will always get the attention. The stage, the deal, the headline win.

But your actual reputation, the one people quietly trust you with, the one that opens doors you never even see, that gets built in the small invisible moments stacked on top of each other for years.

Nobody’s grading you in those moments.

That’s exactly why they matter the most.

Who you are when there’s nothing to gain is who you actually are.

Make sure that person is someone you’re proud of.

And let’s be clear about something…

This was not a vacation or a retreat. It also wasn’t a carefully curated wellness experience designed to make me feel good about myself.

This was a week of doing things that genuinely scared me. Back to back. With no recovery time in between.

It started on the first night. My wife and I walked a six acre farm and woodland at Upper Humber Settlement B&B, foraging our own vegetables for dinner. In the open forest, with zero idea what we were doing. First time for everything.

The next morning we got on a Zodiac boat and rode out into the open ocean over waves that were absolutely smashing against the boat. I’ll be honest, I spent most of that ride holding in my lunch through sheer willpower and pride. (geesh the memories lol)

Then we got dropped off. Just the two of us. On an isolated island called Quirpon Island. And when I say isolated I mean isolated. No roads in. No way out until someone came to get us, two days later.

We had to hike 5.5 kilometres through rain, fog, and what felt genuinely like hail to reach our accommodation. An old lighthouse sitting alone at the edge of the world.

We stayed there for two days completely off the grid. No phone signal. No internet. I couldn’t even look at old photos on my phone because they were stored in the cloud and the cloud did not exist out there.

It was just me, my wife, nature, and strangers who by the end of our time on that island felt like family.

And then the driving situation. OMG… (internally crying… again)

Twelve+ hours on winding mountainous roads completely swallowed by fog. I didn’t drive those roads so much as hydroplane across them. Fifteen moose and four caribou spotted along the way, every single one of them requiring a horn and a prayer to clear the path.

It was the tensest, most uncomfortable, most relentlessly challenging week of my life.

And I would do every single second of it again without hesitation.

Because here’s what I learned in Newfoundland that I couldn’t have learned anywhere else.

Comfort is not neutral. It isn’t just a preference or a personality trait or a reasonable lifestyle choice.

Comfort is actively making you smaller.

Every single day you choose the familiar over the uncomfortable, the safe over the uncertain, the known over the unknown, you’re quietly shrinking the edges of what you believe you’re capable of.

And the cruel thing about it is you can’t feel it happening. It’s too gradual. Too comfortable. Too easy to justify.

You don’t notice you’ve been shrinking until you’re standing at the edge of something that genuinely scares you and realize you can’t remember the last time you felt this alive.

That’s what Quirpon Island did to me.

It didn’t just challenge me physically. It reminded me of a version of myself I had been slowly drifting away from. The one who does hard things not because they’re easy but because the doing of them builds something inside you that nothing else can.

There’s a version of your life sitting just outside your comfort zone right now that you can’t see from where you’re standing.

You won’t find it in another planning session. You won’t find it in a strategy document or a vision board or a podcast about optimal morning routines.

You’ll find it by doing something hard. On purpose. Before you feel ready.

That’s it. That’s the whole lesson from five days in Newfoundland.

Do hard things. Everything else gets easier.

3 simple challenges for this week that will Jump start that ‘Oomph’ in you again:

1. Do one physical thing that genuinely intimidates you. Not a workout, or your regular run with an extra kilometre added on. Something that makes you slightly nervous when you think about signing up for it. A cold water swim. A hike on a trail that feels too long. A physical experience you have been putting off because the timing never felt right.

The reason this matters is not fitness. It’s the direct transfer of physical courage into every other area of your life. When your body proves to you that it can handle hard things your brain starts to believe it too. That belief travels with you into every meeting, every pitch, every difficult conversation you need to have.

Trust me… I’m so comfortable with the Moose now, I actually ate it for dinner lol.

2. Spend 24 hours without your phone and pay attention to what surfaces. Not airplane mode. Actually without it. Leave it at home, in the car, in a drawer, somewhere it can’t be reached for a full day. No checking. No quick glances. No just seeing if anything important came in.

What happens in that space is different for everyone but it’s always revealing. Some people find anxiety they didn’t know they were carrying. Some people find creativity they forgot they had. Some people just find silence and realise how desperately they needed it. Whatever surfaces for you in those 24 hours is worth paying attention to. It’s your actual baseline without the noise.

3. Say yes this week to the invitation that makes you uncomfortable. You know the one. It has probably already shown up in your life recently and you have already started building the excuse. The trip that feels too spontaneous. The experience that feels too unfamiliar. The conversation you keep postponing because the outcome is uncertain. Say yes to it this week. Not because you are ready. Because readiness is a myth that comfort invented to keep you exactly where you are.

The people living the biggest most interesting most fully alive versions of their lives are not more courageous than you. They are just more willing to be uncomfortable for a little while.

Quirpon Island had no WiFi or phone signal. No connection to anything outside of itself.

And it was the most connected I have felt in years.

Connected to my wife. To strangers who became family over shared meals and shared weather and shared isolation. To a version of myself that does not need a perfect plan or a guaranteed outcome to take the next step.

Comfort had been quietly making me smaller.

Newfoundland gave me my edges back. in a BIG way!

Go do something hard this week. Something that makes your stomach flip a little when you think about it.

That feeling is not a warning.

It’s direction.

Smart people are hesitating. Entrepreneurs who would have pulled the trigger six months ago are sitting on decisions. Leaders who built real things through real adversity are suddenly second guessing themselves in ways that have nothing to do with logic and everything to do with the slow drip of anxiety that comes from consuming too much noise for too long.

When I create these blogs, my goal is to be as real and raw as I can… Because that’s where the value is.. So let me say this directly, caution is not a strategy. Waiting for stability before you make your next move is not wisdom.

The world has always been uncertain. The difference right now is that the uncertainty is louder and more visible than usual. And loud visible uncertainty has a way of making even the most grounded people shrink without realizing they are shrinking.

I refused to let that happen to me.

When I started feeling the pressure of the noise I made a decision. I was not going to get more careful. I was already careful. I was going to get more offensive.

So that is exactly what I did.

I went all in on learning AI. Not talking about it, actually building with it. I built a mental clarity app. An inventory management system. A digital human connection art canvas. I entered industries I had never touched before just to understand what was possible. I diversified my investments. And I repositioned my tea company to better reflect the reality I was actually observing in the market rather than the reality I wished existed.

None of that came from confidence I already had sitting around waiting to be used.

It came from choosing action over anxiety. Repeatedly and on purpose.

The most dangerous thing the economic noise does is not empty your bank account. It rewires how you see yourself and what you believe you are capable of doing right now. And that rewiring happens slowly, quietly, and without permission.

You stop pitching the big idea. You scale back the vision. You tell yourself you are being strategic when really you are just being scared.

I get it. But I am not letting it slide.

3 Ways To Protect Your Confidence Right Now:

1. Replace consumption with creation this week. Every hour you spend consuming economic news is an hour your brain spends processing threat. Swap one of those hours for building something. Anything. A new offer. A new skill. A new idea you have been sitting on. Creation is the fastest reset for a confidence that has been slowly eroded by consumption. You cannot feel small and be actively building something at the same time. Try it and see.

2. Make one decision you have been sitting on. Right now, somewhere in your business or your career, there is a decision that has been waiting for the right moment. A hire. A pivot. A price increase. A new direction. The right moment is not coming. Pick the decision that has the most upside and make it this week. Not because the timing is perfect. Because momentum is a confidence builder and paralysis is a confidence killer. One decision changes the energy of everything around it.

3. Audit what you are feeding your brain daily. Write down the five things you consume most regularly. News sources. Social feeds. Conversations. Podcasts. Now ask yourself honestly, are these making me sharper and more energized or are they making me more anxious and more uncertain? You do not have to go off the grid. Just be intentional. Replace one source of noise with one source of genuine signal this week. A book. A conversation with someone who is building despite the climate. A podcast from someone playing offence right now. What you feed your brain becomes the lens you see every opportunity through.

The economy is going to do what it does.

You do not control that. What you control is whether you let it write the story of what you are capable of right now.

The most successful people coming out the other side of this period are not going to be the ones who waited it out carefully. They are going to be the ones who got uncomfortable on purpose. Who up-skilled when everyone else froze. Who made moves when the noise said wait.

Stop playing defence with your potential.

Get offensive. Stay human. Keep building.

The noise does not get to decide what you are worth, unless you allow it to.

And somewhere between landing and finding the ocean I noticed something strange.

My brain started working differently.

Here is something nobody in the productivity space wants to admit.

Most high achievers are not tired because they are working too hard. They are tired because they never actually stop. There is a massive difference between those two things.

Working hard is sustainable when you recover. But most of us are not recovering. We are just switching between different types of doing. Work mode becomes email mode becomes social media mode becomes thinking about work mode becomes falling asleep with the phone on our chest mode.

We call that rest. It is not rest. It is just exhaustion wearing a different outfit.

Real disconnection, the kind where your brain has absolutely nothing it needs to process or perform or produce, that is where something remarkable happens. Ideas surface that the noise was drowning out. Clarity arrives that the busyness was blocking. And you remember, sometimes for the first time in a long time, what it actually feels like to think instead of just react.

Honduras gave me that. Not because it is magic. But because it was new enough and unfamiliar enough that I could not default to autopilot. I had to actually show up. And in showing up fully present I accidentally gave my brain the one thing it had been starving for.

Space.

I came back with more creative energy, more clarity, and more genuine excitement about my work than I have felt in months. Not because I learned something new. Because I finally stopped long enough to hear what I already knew.

That is the cruel irony of the always on culture we have built around ourselves. The answers we are chasing in the next meeting, the next strategy session, the next productivity hack, they are often already inside us. We just cannot hear them over the noise we refuse to turn down.

The most productive thing I did last week had nothing to do with output. It had everything to do with input. Specifically, what I stopped inputting long enough to actually process.

3 Ways To Give Your Brain The Space It Is Desperately Asking For:

1. Take a trip somewhere your autopilot doesn’t work. It does not have to be Honduras. It does not have to be international. It just has to be somewhere unfamiliar enough that you cannot default to routine. A new city. A different environment. Somewhere your brain has to actually engage with what is in front of it instead of running on habit. Novelty is one of the most underrated thinking tools available to every single one of us. And it costs less than another productivity course.

2. Build one hour of genuine nothing into your week. Not a walk where you listen to a podcast. Not a bath where you mentally run through your to do list. Nothing. Sit somewhere without your phone, without input, without an agenda, and just let your brain wander wherever it wants to go. This will feel deeply uncomfortable for the first ten minutes. That discomfort is exactly the point. The ideas that show up in that space will surprise you every single time.

3. Stop glorifying busy out loud. Every time you tell someone how slammed you are, how little sleep you got, how back to back your week was, you are reinforcing a story that is keeping you trapped. This week catch yourself doing it and replace it with something true. I am working on some things I am really excited about. I am figuring out where to focus my energy right now. Anything that does not treat exhaustion like a trophy. The way you talk about your pace shapes the pace you feel permission to keep. Change the language and watch how quickly the pressure shifts.

I am back. Recharged. Full of ideas. Ready to build something great.

And I did not get here by doing more.

I got here by finally, genuinely, unapologetically doing nothing for a little while.

Sixteen years ago I was standing in my teashop about to make one of the biggest mistakes of my entrepreneurial life…

And I didn’t even know it yet.

I was looking around at the competition. David’s Tea. All these polished, built out operations with shiny equipment, top tier everything. And I thought to myself, okay, this is what I need to do. I need to match that. I need to come out perfect. I need the best equipment, the best looking store, everything dialled in before I even open the doors.

The stress of that was absolutely crushing me.

I was trying to launch like I was already established. Like I had already won. Like my customers were already waiting for me and all I had to do was show up looking flawless.

That is when my mom pulled me aside and changed everything.

She looked at me and said something I have never forgotten.

“Start with where you’re at. Start with what you have.”

At that moment, what I had was a kettle. That was literally it. A kettle.

I remember walking through those cafes and seeing all these massive hot water machines. These beautiful stainless steel tanks. Equipment that screamed success and polish and “we’ve got this figured out.”

And then I looked at my kettle and thought, this is embarrassing.

But my mom said something that reframed the entire thing for me.

She said when you start where you’re at and you let your customers grow with you, when you make them the reason that you grow, they become invested in what you’re doing. Not because you gave them the perfect product on day one. But because they felt like they were part of making it better. They felt like their support, their belief, their loyalty actually mattered to the journey.

And that builds a different kind of customer. Not a transaction. A relationship.

So I followed her advice. I started with the kettle. I started small. I started real.

And what happened next was something I could have never built with all the polish and perfection in the world.

A loyal brand. A community. Customers who became like family because they celebrated every single win with us. Every upgrade. Every challenge. Every moment where we got a little bit better.

When we finally upgraded from that kettle to a hot water tank, it was big news. Our customers were genuinely excited. They wanted to see us get better chairs. They wanted to see us invest in ourselves because they had invested in us first.

We didn’t build this business alone. We built it with them. And they felt that. They knew it.

That loyalty, that community, that sense of being part of something real and honest and growing, that is what my mom gave me with one piece of advice.

Start where you’re at.

Here is what most people miss about that advice.

It is not about being small or settling or being okay with less. It is about being honest. It is about starting from a place of truth instead of a place of pretense.

Not the good kind of quiet. Not the “wow that was profound” quiet.

The “nobody wants to admit they have absolutely no idea what just happened” quiet.

Everyone nodding slowly. Eyes doing that polite glaze. One person writing something down just to look engaged. And somewhere in the back someone is genuinely considering faking a phone call to escape.

We have all been in that room. And if we’re being completely honest, some of us have BEEN that person at the front of it.

Here is the myth that needs to die today.

Complex language does not equal intelligence. It equals confusion with confidence. And confident confusion is one of the most common and most expensive communication mistakes happening in boardrooms, pitches, presentations, and networking events all over the world right now.

I have been in some remarkable rooms in my life. Conversations with the King and royal officials. Meetings with government leaders and dignitaries. Roundtables with medical experts from around the world. Rooms full of tech founders, financial gurus, and yes, billionaires.

And here is what I learned sitting in every single one of those rooms.

The most impressive people were never the ones using the biggest words. They were the ones who could take something impossibly complex and make it feel like a conversation you were having over coffee with a really smart friend.

That is the superpower. And almost nobody is talking about it.

I made a decision early in my career to keep my language simple. Not because I couldn’t match the vocabulary in the room. But because I realised that making someone feel understood is infinitely more powerful than making them feel educated.

There is a massive difference between those two things.

When someone says “I like to measure our KPIs against competing metrics to gauge overall performance trajectory” I hear someone trying to sound smart.

When someone says “I focus on the main things that are actually helping us grow” I hear someone who genuinely understands what they’re talking about.

Simple is not dumbed down. Simple is mastery. Einstein said it. Da Vinci lived it. And every great communicator you have ever admired in your life practiced it whether they knew it or not.

The truth is brutal and beautiful at the same time. If you cannot explain something simply, you do not understand it as well as you think you do. The complexity in your explanation is not proof of your knowledge. It is the gap in it.

And the room? The room always knows. They are just too polite to tell you.

3 Ways To Become The Clearest Communicator In Every Room You Walk Into:

1. The Grandmother Test. Before any important conversation, presentation, or pitch, ask yourself this one question. Could I explain this to my grandmother in under two minutes and have her genuinely understand it? Not patronise her. Not oversimplify it into meaninglessness. But explain it clearly enough that someone with zero context walks away actually getting it. If the answer is no, you are not ready to present it to anyone else either. Clarity starts with your own understanding. And the grandmother test will expose every gap you didn’t know you had.

2. Kill one piece of jargon every week. Pick one word or phrase you use regularly that sounds professional but actually means nothing to most people. KPIs. Synergy. Leverage. Ecosystem. Circle back. Move the needle. Pick one and replace it this week with plain language that says exactly what you mean. Then do it again next week. And the week after. This is not about dumbing down your communication. It is about cleaning it up. The leaders, speakers, and professionals who are remembered are the ones who said something clearly enough that it actually stuck.

3. Watch peoples faces, not your slides. The most underused communication feedback tool in the world is the face of the person you are talking to. It tells you everything in real time. The slight furrow of confusion. The polite nod that means nothing. The eyes that are present versus the eyes that left five minutes ago. Most people are so focused on what they are saying that they completely miss what the room is telling them. This week in every important conversation or presentation you have, spend less time looking at your notes and more time reading the room. If you see confusion, stop and ask. Something is shifting. You can feel it.

I don’t know if AI is going to change everything forever. Nobody does. And anyone telling you they know exactly how this plays out is selling something.

What I do know is this. Right now there is a window open. And windows don’t stay open forever.

Remember the internet boom?

A lot of companies crashed and burned. But the people who got in, learned the skills, built the muscle, and stayed curious? They walked away with something nobody could take from them. And when the dust settled they were the ones who built what came next.

This feels exactly like that moment. Except the window might be even bigger.

I think about it like the 90s when computers first showed up. Everything felt possible. Nobody knew the rules yet. And the people who just started playing with it, breaking things, building things, figuring it out as they went, those people had a massive head start on everyone who waited until it felt safe.

That’s where we are right now with AI. And I’m not watching from the sidelines.

Here’s my personal game plan and what I’ve been building.

1. Do the “Used To” audit- tonight. Open your notes app and write down everything you used to do that made you feel genuinely alive. Not things you were good at, things that lit you up. Then look at your calendar for the last 90 days and count how many times any of those things showed up. That gap between the list and the calendar? That’s exactly where your energy went.

2. Schedule one completely useless thing this week. Not productive. Not strategic. Not networkable. Something that exists entirely because it makes you feel something good. High achievers are terrible at this because everything has to have a point. But joy doesn’t need a point. One hour. No agenda. Just you doing something that feels good for absolutely no reason at all.

3. Have the honest conversation with yourself you’ve been outsourcing to your calendar. Look at your next two weeks and ask, does this schedule belong to someone building a life they love? Or someone managing obligations and calling it ambition? Don’t blow it up. Just make one edit. Remove one thing that drains you. Add one thing that charges you. This week. As a signal to yourself that you still have a say in how your own life gets built.

Achievement was never supposed to be the whole story…

It was supposed to be the vehicle, not the destination.

You don’t need to start over. You just need to reintroduce yourself to the version of you that existed before success had so many requirements.

That person isn’t gone.

They’re just waiting for you to remember them.

You’ve heard it a thousand times.

Probably said it yourself.

In the town hall. In the all-hands. In the carefully worded email after another round of “organizational changes.” In the glossy values poster hanging in the lobby that nobody looks at anymore.

“Our people are our greatest asset.”

It sounds right. It feels right when you say it. And somewhere in there, most leaders actually believe it, at least in the moment they’re saying it.

But then the budget gets tight. And the first thing cut is training. And the team restructure happens with a 30 minute Zoom call and a scripted HR message. And the high performer who’s been quietly carrying the team for two years gets passed over again, because someone more comfortable to promote was standing closer.

And the mental health initiative that got a big launch in January gets forgotten by March because the numbers needed attention.

And the people? They noticed all of it. Every single time.

Here’s what nobody in the leadership space wants to say directly: most organizations don’t actually treat people like assets. They treat them like expenses. Things to be managed, minimized, and optimized, until they’re needed again for the next big push.

Assets get invested in. Assets get protected. Assets appreciate in value when you take care of them. Assets don’t get a ping on a Friday afternoon telling them their role has been eliminated effective immediately.

The gap between what leaders say about their people and how they actually treat them isn’t just a culture problem. It’s a trust problem. And trust, once it’s gone, doesn’t come back because you hired a new HR consultant or launched a wellness app.

Anyways, your people are not naive. They are not waiting to be inspired by another company value. They are watching what you do, in the small moments, in the hard decisions, in the way you show up when it costs you something to actually mean what you say.

And right now, a lot of them have already made up their minds about what kind of leader you really are. They just haven’t told you yet.

3 Ways To Stop Saying It And Start Showing It, This Week:

1. Replace one policy with one conversation.

Somewhere in your organization there is a rule, a process, or a policy that exists for the benefit of the system — not the people inside it. Find it. Then instead of defending it, sit down with the people it affects most and ask them one question: “If we could change one thing about how we operate that would make you feel more valued here what would it be?” You don’t have to fix everything overnight. But asking the question and actually doing something with the answer, sends a signal that no company value poster ever could.

2. Make someone’s invisible work visible- publicly.

Right now, on your team, there is at least one person doing extraordinary work that nobody is talking about. Not because it isn’t happening, but because they’re not loud about it, and you’ve been too busy to shine a light on it. This week, in a team meeting, a group chat, a LinkedIn post, an email, name them. Specifically. Not a generic “great job everyone” call out exactly what they did and exactly why it mattered. Recognition that is specific and public costs you nothing and means absolutely everything to the person receiving it. Assets appreciate when you invest attention in them.

3. Have the conversation you’ve been putting off for their benefit, not yours.

There is someone on your team right now who needs feedback, clarity, a new challenge, or an honest conversation about their future and they’re not getting it because having that conversation is uncomfortable for you. That discomfort is costing them their growth. This week, have the conversation you’ve been avoiding, not because it’s easy, but because they deserve a leader who cares enough to be honest. That is what treating someone like an asset actually looks like. Not the words. The willingness to show up for them even when it’s hard.

Saying “people are our greatest asset” is easy.

Proving it is a daily choice. In how you spend your budget. In how you make your decisions. In how you show up for the people who are showing up for you.

Your team doesn’t need another value statement. They need a leader who makes them feel like the words on the wall actually mean something.

That leader can be you. Starting this week.
