Data Centres, Australian Sovereignty and Why Victoria Is in the Firing Line

Australians have been encouraged to think of “the cloud” as something clean, weightless and almost magical—a limitless digital atmosphere in which our photographs, medical records, bank accounts, government services and artificial-intelligence systems simply float.

They do not.

The cloud has foundations. It has concrete walls, substations, transmission connections, cooling equipment, water pipes, batteries and emergency generators. It occupies land, consumes electricity every hour of every day, produces heat and noise, and depends upon fibre-optic cables and extraordinarily concentrated systems of corporate and governmental power.

Data centres are not merely large sheds filled with computers. At their greatest scale they are industrial facilities, critical infrastructure, repositories of national memory and the engine rooms of the emerging artificial-intelligence economy. That makes them necessary—but it also makes them dangerous when their ownership, purpose, resource demands and social consequences escape proper scrutiny.

I am not opposed to technology. I am opposed to technology being used as an incantation to silence questions. I am opposed to the word “innovation” being used to excuse secrecy, public subsidy, environmental damage or the transfer of sovereign capacity into private and often foreign hands.

As a physician, I have spent my life asking basic questions before supporting an intervention. What is the indication? What is the dose? What are the benefits? What are the adverse effects? Who carries the risk? What monitoring is required? When should the intervention be stopped?

Australia should ask precisely the same questions about the data-centre boom.

Why Australia genuinely needs data centres

There is a legitimate and compelling case for maintaining substantial data-centre capacity in Australia.

Modern hospitals, banks, universities, businesses, transport networks, telecommunications systems and emergency services depend upon reliable data storage and processing. Cloud services enable smaller businesses to use computing resources they could never afford to build themselves. Local data centres reduce latency, support disaster recovery and make it possible to keep certain sensitive information within Australian jurisdiction. They enable medical research, weather forecasting, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, scientific modelling and, increasingly, artificial intelligence.

The Commonwealth already recognises data storage and processing as a critical-infrastructure sector under the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018. Operators of qualifying critical assets must provide ownership and operational information, report cyber incidents and maintain risk-management programs. That is not bureaucratic overreach; it is recognition that a failure, hostile takeover, cyberattack or prolonged outage could disrupt essential services across society. Australian-hosted computing can also contribute to national resilience. Victoria’s new subsea fibre system, for example, is intended to link Australia’s east and west coasts through Victoria and connect directly to the United States, Singapore and India. The Victorian Government says this will provide alternative communications routes during natural disasters and support cloud services and data centres. That is a genuine strategic benefit, not merely a corporate talking point. The Victorian Government’s description of the project makes the resilience case clearly.

Nor should we dismiss the economic opportunity. Construction generates work for engineers, electricians, builders, security specialists and technology suppliers. A well-designed domestic compute sector could support Australian research, defence capability, start-ups and advanced industries. If tied to Australian training, procurement, research and intellectual property, it could help us become a producer rather than merely a consumer of advanced technology.

The crucial words are ‘if tied to Australian benefit.’

A building on Australian soil is not automatically an Australian sovereign asset. A local server does not guarantee local control. Infrastructure may sit in Melbourne while its ownership, software, encryption keys, algorithms, profits and ultimate legal obligations remain overseas.

Even the Commonwealth now concedes this. In August 2026, Assistant Minister Andrew Charlton warned that Australia could supply the land and electricity, host the machines and still allow much of the value and economic rent to flow offshore. “Simply building data centres in Australia does not necessarily mean that Australia captures the economics of AI,” he said. That is perhaps the most important admission in the entire debate.

We must not become a digital quarry—exporting cheap land, water and electricity while importing expensive intelligence, software and control.

Why Victoria has become a target

Victoria has not become a target for data centres by accident. It has actively presented itself as one.

The Victorian Government’s August 2026 Sustainable Data Centre Action Plan declares its intention to strengthen Victoria’s position as a global investment destination and promote a project pipeline said to be worth more than $25 billion. The Government advertises available industrial land, a competitive energy market, a large technology workforce, research institutions and a culture of innovation.

Its investment-promotion material goes further. Invest Victoria states that Melbourne had more than 50 operating data centres by mid-2026, extensive fibre networks, internet exchanges, proximity to international cable landing points, industrial-zoned land, battery-storage capacity, recycled water and roughly 30 per cent of Australia’s technology workforce. Existing facilities create a network effect: once carriers, cloud providers, specialist contractors and customers gather in one place, the next operator has another reason to locate nearby.

Melbourne is also a very large market in its own right. Financial services, health, education, government, research, retail and technology companies all generate demand for low-latency computing. The western and northern industrial corridors offer relatively large parcels of land near transmission infrastructure and a growing population. The new subsea cables and Melbourne–Geelong fibre connection strengthen international and domestic connectivity.

Then there is government facilitation. Victoria’s Development Facilitation Program provides a streamlined approval route for eligible projects. The State’s own promotional material boasts that the Investment Coordinator-General helps break down “regulatory silos” and accelerate projects. To an investor, that combination-land, fibre, power, workforce, government assistance and planning speed—is highly attractive.

But one person’s regulatory silo is another person’s democratic safeguard.

The City of Melbourne’s August 2026 Draft Data Centres and Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Position Paper identified approximately 52 data centres in Greater Melbourne. It found that ten permits had been granted through the ministerial pathway established under Clause 53.22 since October 2020, with another five applications under consideration as of July 2026. Where that pathway applies, the Minister for Planning becomes the responsible authority and the decision cannot be appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The City warns that this can reduce the influence of councils and communities.

That is part of the answer to why Victoria has been targeted. It possesses the physical assets industry wants, and its government has deliberately reduced investment friction.

The unresolved question is whether it has also reduced public protection.

The electricity question can no longer be minimised

Data centres run continuously. They cannot simply switch off when the grid is strained or renewable generation falls-at least not under present operating models, where uptime is treated as sacred.

Australian data centres consumed an estimated 3.9 terawatt-hours of electricity in the 2024–25 financial year, equivalent to approximately two per cent of grid-supplied electricity in the National Electricity Market. Under AEMO’s Step Change scenario, consumption is forecast to reach 12 terawatt-hours by 2030 and 34.5 terawatt-hours by 2050- approximately six per cent and twelve per cent respectively of NEM grid-supplied electricity. These are forecasts rather than certainties, but they demonstrate the scale of the potential transformation. The figures come from analysis prepared for AEMO by Oxford Economics Australia.

The Victorian trend is already visible. In its Quarterly Energy Dynamics report for the second quarter of 2026, AEMO found that Victorian data-centre demand had nearly doubled in one year-from an average of 104 megawatts in the second quarter of 2025 to 204 megawatts in the corresponding quarter of 2026. AEMO’s current assessment is that large data centres are relatively inflexible loads and that their scale, concentration and continuous operation require careful management of system strength, voltage stability and transmission investment.

Eleven large projects representing 5.4 gigawatts of maximum demand were progressing through the NEM transmission-connection process at the end of March 2026. About 40 per cent of that proposed capacity was in Victoria. Most projects were still at an early stage, and not all will be built, but even a portion would represent a profound new claim upon the electricity system.

The moral issue is straightforward. Australian families and small businesses must not be forced to subsidise the grid connections, transmission upgrades, storage or firming required by some of the wealthiest corporations on Earth. A data centre must not be permitted to contract renewable electricity that already exists, rebrand itself as “green” and leave households dependent upon higher-priced or higher-emission marginal generation. Its new load must be matched by genuinely additional generation and storage, with the operator paying the attributable network costs.

The Commonwealth’s own expectations for data-centre developers, published in March 2026, say precisely that: new facilities should secure additional clean generation or storage, cover their share of transmission and distribution costs, improve efficiency and avoid upward pressure on energy prices.

The problem is that expectations are not the same as enforceable law.

Good intentions do not stabilise a grid. Contracts, standards, engineering and enforceable obligations do.

Water, land, heat, noise and the jobs claim

Electricity is only the beginning.

Some data centres consume significant quantities of water for cooling; others use closed-loop, air-cooled or direct-to-chip systems that can greatly reduce potable-water demand. Other more sophisticate chips consume far less water for cooling. It is therefore misleading to speak of every data centre as though it has the same water footprint. But it is equally misleading to approve vast facilities without publicly disclosing their expected consumption, water source, cooling technology and drought plan.

The Commonwealth estimated that Australian data centres used about seven gigalitres of water for cooling in 2024–25. Nationally, that was a small fraction of industrial water use, but national averages can conceal severe local pressure. A gigalitre consumed beside a secure recycled-water supply is not the same as a gigalitre drawn from a stressed drinking-water system. Victoria must assess water locally, cumulatively and under drought conditions-not by hiding behind an Australia-wide percentage.

Land is another cost. Large data centres can occupy strategic industrial or peri-urban land while producing relatively few permanent jobs per hectare. The City of Melbourne’s position paper acknowledges that individual facilities may generate limited direct employment even while supporting a wider digital economy. That distinction matters. Construction jobs are real, but temporary. Indirect economic benefits may be substantial, but they must be demonstrated rather than assumed. Governments should publish the expected number of construction jobs, continuing full-time jobs, local apprenticeships, Australian procurement, taxable income and public subsidies for every major project.

Local communities also bear the physical footprint: building bulk, security fencing, constant cooling noise, vibration, bright lighting, generator testing, traffic and waste heat. Backup diesel or gas generation can create local air pollution and emissions. None of this proves that every proposal is unacceptable. It proves that scale-sensitive planning, health protection, noise limits and cumulative assessment are essential.

The proposed Victorian AI Hub at Plumpton illustrates the change in scale. According to the developer’s publicly reported concept, the site would cover 350 hectares, with 140 hectares accommodating four data-centre buildings and a stated maximum capacity of 2.4 gigawatts. It remains a proposal requiring planning and environmental approvals, and maximum capacity is not the same as initial consumption. Nevertheless, a project of this magnitude is not an ordinary commercial development. It is comparable to major energy and industrial infrastructure and must be assessed accordingly. Residents are entitled to ask what will power it, what will cool it, how much gas or diesel backup will be installed, who the tenants will be, how many permanent local jobs will result, what happens during drought or grid stress, and who pays for the new infrastructure. Asking those questions is not anti-technology. It is democracy.

Data sovereignty is more than data residency

The term “sovereign data centre” is now used with impressive frequency and inadequate precision.

Data residency asks where the servers are. Data sovereignty asks who ultimately controls the data, the encryption keys, the software, the administrators, the legal obligations and the power to deny access. An Australian building owned or controlled through foreign corporate structures may still be subject to foreign laws or directions.

The Australian Signals Directorate’s cybersecurity guidance expressly warns that businesses based in foreign countries may be subject to foreign-government control and laws that conflict with Australian interests. It advises critical-infrastructure operators to understand where information is stored, who can access it and whether cloud or AI systems are externally controlled. That warning appears in the Government’s own principles for secure AI integration.

Nor should we pretend data centres are politically neutral merely because concrete and silicon have no ideology. The facilities themselves are not a digital identity system, a central bank digital currency or a surveillance program. But they are part of the infrastructure capable of supporting such systems. The same computing power that can analyse medical images can also enable biometric tracking, behavioural profiling, algorithmic censorship and automated restrictions on citizens.

The answer is not to reject computing. It is to place firm democratic limits on its use. Technology must remain the servant of the citizen. The citizen must never become a parameter inside an unaccountable machine.

The strongest case against the present rush

The strongest argument against the uncontrolled expansion of Australian data centres is not a claim that every facility is harmful. It is that governments have begun promoting and facilitating a new class of critical industrial infrastructure before establishing a coherent, enforceable and transparent framework governing its cumulative effects.

The City of Melbourne has identified the gaps with unusual candour. Victoria lacks a coordinated spatial strategy identifying appropriate and inappropriate locations. Its planning provisions do not yet provide a dedicated, scale-sensitive framework. There are no consistent data-centre-specific planning benchmarks for energy, water, emissions or cumulative impact. Public site-level information on electricity, water, emissions, backup generation and infrastructure demands remains limited. Mechanisms ensuring that developers fund attributable infrastructure and deliver measurable community benefits are also limited.

This is not the accusation of a fringe protest group. It is the assessment of the City now hosting much of the expansion.

Meanwhile, Victoria is spending public money to attract the industry, marketing accelerated approvals and promoting a $25 billion pipeline. Promotion has raced ahead of protection.

We have seen this pattern before: announce the economic prize, characterise the project as inevitable, promise jobs, minimise externalities, fast-track the approvals and ask the public to trust that problems will be managed later. By the time later arrives, contracts are signed, capital is committed and governments declare that reversing course would be too costly.

That is not planning. It is the manufacture of inevitability.

What Australia and Victoria should require

I do not support an indiscriminate ban on data centres. Australia requires them. I support a moratorium on approving new hyperscale and AI-scale developments where governments cannot yet demonstrate adequate electricity, water, planning and public-interest safeguards. The pause should last only until enforceable standards are in place; it should not obstruct small enterprise, edge or on-site facilities with modest impacts.

First, Australia needs a public national register of major proposed and operating data centres, recording beneficial Australian ownership, Australian control, approved and expected power demand, water source, cooling method, backup generation, emissions, land area, expected permanent employment and committed infrastructure contributions. Commercial confidentiality should not be permitted and there should be no secrets.

Second, every major proposal should undergo an independent cumulative impact assessment - not merely a project-by-project assessment that pretends neighbouring facilities do not exist. Electricity, transmission, water, traffic, air quality, noise, heat, biodiversity and emergency risk must be considered across the entire region.

Third, additional demand must be matched by additional, deliverable and appropriately firmed electricity supply. Developers must pay the full attributable cost of grid connections, transmission augmentation, storage and system-strength measures. Household bills must not become the hidden financing mechanism for ‘foreign’ AI infrastructure.

Fourth, potable water should be the cooling source of last resort. Closed-loop, low-water, non-water and recycled-water systems should be required, with public reporting of actual annual use and enforceable drought-response plans.

Fifth, the phrase “Australian sovereignty” must be defined in law. It should address beneficial ownership, control of encryption keys, administrator access, no foreign legal exposure, data portability, cybersecurity, continuity during geopolitical conflict and the ability of Australian authorities to keep essential and non-essential services operating if a foreign provider withdraws.

Sixth, major approvals should include enforceable Australian-benefit agreements covering local jobs, apprenticeships, research partnerships, access to compute for Australian universities and start-ups, domestic procurement, taxation and measurable community infrastructure. A promise in a media release is not a public benefit. A binding condition is.

Seventh, Victoria must restore meaningful community participation and ownership. Ministerial assessment should not extinguish transparent public notice, independent review and effective appeal rights. Speed may be desirable, but administrative convenience is not a sufficient reason to remove citizens from decisions that may reshape their district for generations.

Finally, approvals should be staged. A speculative 2.4-gigawatt ambition should not reserve grid capacity, sterilise land or distort public planning as though every megawatt were already contracted and necessary. Each stage should proceed only when tenants, power, water, environmental performance and public benefits are independently verified.

No blank cheque for the digital empire

Australians must decide.

We can build secure, efficient and appropriately distributed digital infrastructure that strengthens our hospitals, universities, businesses, research and national resilience. We can require new generation, protect water, preserve community rights, develop Australian expertise and retain our ownership of the economic value created here.

Or we can become the landlord and power station for a foreign-controlled digital empire - providing the land, the water, the grid and the subsidies while the intellectual property, profits and ultimate authority flow elsewhere.

Victoria has become a target because it offers what the industry needs and because its government wants the investment. Those facts are not, by themselves, evidence of corruption or conspiracy. They are evidence of a deliberate economic strategy. But a strategy of this magnitude must be judged not by the value of its announcements, but by its consequences for the people.

Who benefits? Who pays? Who owns? Who controls? Who is accountable when the promises fail?

Those are not obstacles to progress. They are the minimum questions of a free, sovereign and responsible nation.

I would therefore go further than merely requiring data to be stored on Australian soil. Data centres carrying government information, health records, financial data, defence-related material or other critical national functions should be beneficially owned and operationally controlled by Australians. That means more than registering a local subsidiary or placing an Australian flag on the building. The controlling ownership, board authority, senior operational command, security administration and custody of encryption keys must remain in Australian hands. Australian superannuation funds, locally controlled companies, public investment vehicles and other domestic institutions have ample capacity to finance critical infrastructure when government establishes the right framework. Our national data must not depend upon decisions made in a foreign boardroom.

Large international technology and infrastructure companies could still invest capital, provide equipment, licence technology or bring customers to these facilities, but they should participate as non-controlling investors rather than sovereign proprietors. Their return could take the form of a transparent, contractually defined percentage of operating income or an agreed return on invested capital. What they should not receive in exchange is control of the asset, the data, the encryption keys, the operating company or its strategic decisions. Foreign investment may legitimately purchase a fair financial return; it must never purchase Australian sovereignty. The greater share of the income, employment, expertise, taxation and long-term asset value generated from Australian land, water, electricity and public infrastructure should remain in Australia for the benefit of Australians.

The cloud is not in the sky. It is here - on our land, connected to our grid, drawing upon our resources and storing the intimate records of our lives.

It must therefore answer to us.

No One Has the Right to Rewrite the Biosphere

The case for a global prohibition on the genetic manipulation of viruses, bacteria and other self-replicating organisms

I’m a physician. I’m a father. I’m a husband. I’m human.

I did not create the genetic architecture of life. Human beings did not create the genetic architecture of life. We inherited a biosphere of immeasurable complexity—an interconnected system refined through billions of years of evolution. Yet a comparatively small group of scientists, corporations, military agencies, governments and private foundations has assumed the authority to cut, recombine, delete, insert, synthesise and redesign the genetic material of living organisms.

I did not give them permission to do so. They do this without the informed consent of humanity. They do it without the consent of future generations. They do it despite being unable to predict all the biological, ecological and evolutionary consequences. And they do it knowing that a single mistake involving a replication-competent organism will be impossible to recall.

I believe the time has come to confront the fundamental question that biotechnology has carefully avoided:

Does any person, laboratory, corporation, military program or philanthropic foundation possess the moral right to create new forms of self-replicating biological life whose descendants may escape, evolve, spread and alter the shared biosphere?

My answer is no!!!

The deliberate genetic manipulation of viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants, animals and other replication-competent organisms should be prohibited internationally. This prohibition should include gain-of-function and loss-of-function engineering, recombinant and chimeric organisms, reverse genetics, synthetic genomes, gene drives, artificial chromosomes, transmissible genetic systems, the reconstruction of extinct pathogens, AI-assisted genome design and every attempt to create self-replicating “mirror life.”

This is a more sweeping position than current scientific policy. But current policy begins with the presumption that genetic manipulation should continue unless a particular experiment can be shown to be too dangerous. I believe that presumption must be reversed. When an experiment can create an evolving, reproducing agent, the burden should rest upon the researcher to prove that catastrophic harm is impossible—not merely unlikely.

That burden cannot be met!!!

Living organisms are not programmable machines

The biotechnology industry frequently describes DNA as though it were computer code. Genes are “edited,” biological systems are “programmed,” organisms become “platforms,” and unwanted characteristics are supposedly “deleted.”

This language is dangerously misleading.

A living organism is not a static machine executing a simple program. Genes interact with other genes, regulatory sequences, proteins, metabolites, immune systems, microbial communities and environmental conditions. The effect of a genetic alteration may change across tissues, species, generations and environments. A modification that appears stable in a controlled laboratory may behave differently under heat, nutritional stress, competition, infection, mutation, stress or exposure to another organism.

One gene can affect multiple biological characteristics. Multiple genes can contribute to the same characteristic. A change intended to produce one benefit may create numerous secondary effects that were never anticipated. Even when a genetic edit occurs at the intended location, the process can produce large deletions, rearrangements, chromosomal damage and other unintended outcomes. The phrase “precision gene editing” therefore describes the intention of the engineer more accurately than the total biological result.

Scientists can sequence an organism after modification, but sequencing cannot predict every future interaction or evolutionary pathway. It cannot simulate every ecosystem into which an organism might escape. It cannot tell us how the modified organism will behave after thousands of generations, after recombination with other organisms or after exposure to selective pressures that do not exist inside the laboratory.

Biology does not remain still while human beings analyse it. It mutates, adapts, competes, exchanges genetic material and evolves.

The unique danger of manipulating viruses

Viruses occupy a particularly dangerous position because replication, mutation and transmission are intrinsic to their biology. A genetically modified virus may acquire changes in infectivity, pathogenicity, tissue targeting, host range, immune evasion, environmental stability or susceptibility to existing treatments.

Experiments may be undertaken with the stated intention of understanding which changes could make a virus more transmissible or dangerous. But creating the altered organism is not merely observing a threat. It is bringing the threat into physical existence.

In 2001, researchers reported that inserting an immune-signalling gene into mousepox virus unexpectedly produced an organism capable of overcoming genetic resistance in mice and undermining perceived vaccine protection. The modification had been pursued for a different experimental purpose, yet it generated a more formidable pathogen. Recombinant mousepox study

In 2012, researchers published work in which modified H5N1 influenza viruses acquired airborne transmissibility between ferrets, a commonly used model for mammalian influenza transmission. Whatever knowledge may have been gained, the experiments also created biological material with characteristics that raised worldwide concern. H5N1 transmission experiment

In 2002, scientists synthesised infectious poliovirus using its published genetic sequence without requiring a natural viral template. The study demonstrated that written sequence information could be converted into a functioning pathogen. Synthetic poliovirus study

In 2018, researchers reported the construction of infectious horsepox virus using synthetic biology. Horsepox is related to variola virus, the cause of smallpox. Critics warned that the demonstration lowered conceptual and technical barriers to reconstructing dangerous poxviruses. Horsepox synthesis

Most recently, generative artificial intelligence has been used to design complete, viable bacteriophage genomes. Those particular viruses infected bacteria, not people, but the experiment demonstrated the transition from AI-generated sequence to a functioning, self-replicating biological agent. These experiments form a technological progression: altering existing pathogens, identifying mutations associated with dangerous properties, reconstructing viruses from sequence information, synthesising large viral genomes and finally using AI to design genomes that did not previously exist.

The claim that each individual experiment was safely contained misses the cumulative danger. Every experiment expands the global repertoire of techniques, sequences, models and practical knowledge that may be copied, stolen or deliberately misused.

The discovery cannot be made safe merely by locking the original sample in a freezer.

Accidents are not hypothetical

No laboratory is infallible. Human beings become tired, distracted and complacent. Equipment fails. Samples are mislabelled. Waste is handled incorrectly. Freezers malfunction. Security systems are breached. Institutions conceal embarrassing incidents. Pathogens are transported, misplaced and occasionally sent to the wrong destination.

In 2014, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledged several serious failures involving potential anthrax exposure, contamination of an influenza sample with H5N1 and the discovery of forgotten smallpox-labelled vials in a storage room. The CDC director described the events as unacceptable and stated that they should never have happened. CDC laboratory-safety statement

These incidents occurred within some of the most prominent government biomedical institutions in the world. They demonstrate that prestige, funding and formal biosafety rules do not eliminate human error.

Containment can reduce risk, but it cannot reduce risk to zero. With an ordinary chemical, an accidental spill may remain localised. With a replication-competent biological agent, the material can reproduce after release. If transmissible, it may move from one host to another before the laboratory even recognises that containment has failed.

The risk is asymmetric. Thousands of successful experiments do not compensate for one catastrophic escape.

Bacteria can distribute engineered genes

Genetically modified bacteria present a different but equally serious set of risks. Bacteria reproduce quickly, adapt to new environments and exchange genetic information through horizontal gene transfer. Genetic material can move between related and sometimes distantly related microorganisms by several natural mechanisms.

An engineered bacterial gene does not necessarily remain within the strain into which it was inserted. Under appropriate conditions, genetic material associated with antimicrobial resistance, environmental persistence, metabolic advantage, toxin production or altered host interactions could move into other microbial populations.

I believe the following consequences may occur but are not limited to this list:

• New reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistance genes.

• Transfer of engineered characteristics into pathogenic bacteria.

• Disruption of human, animal or plant microbiomes.

• Persistent contamination of soil, water or food-production environments.

• Altered nutrient cycling and ecological competition.

• Unexpected toxin or metabolite production.

• Colonisation of organisms or habitats never included in the original testing.

• Evolutionary changes that disable engineered “kill switches.”

• Interaction with naturally occurring plasmids, phages and mobile genetic elements.

The World Health Organization and other international bodies recognise that antimicrobial-resistant organisms and resistance genes can move through water, soil, food systems, animals and human populations. The microbial world is not divided into the neat administrative compartments used in laboratory risk assessments. WHO One Health assessment

Once an engineered gene becomes established in an environmental microbial community, recovery may be impossible.

Gene drives could alter entire species

Gene-drive technology is designed to defeat ordinary inheritance and force a chosen genetic trait through a population. This may be proposed to suppress mosquitoes, control invasive species or alter agricultural pests.

But a technology designed to spread is fundamentally incompatible with the claim that it can always be contained.

A gene-drive organism may cross political borders, enter neighbouring ecosystems and interbreed with related populations. It may affect predators, prey, pollinators and competitors. Ecological niches left by a suppressed species may be filled by something more dangerous. Mutations may create resistance to the gene drive or alter its effects. A trait designed for one environmental setting may behave differently in another.

The US National Academies has recognised that gene drives are intended to spread traits through populations and that their ecological effects may be irreversible. It has also acknowledged that technical development has advanced faster than the knowledge required to predict environmental consequences. National Academies assessment

No laboratory can obtain informed consent from every population into whose territory a gene-drive organism might travel. No country has the ethical authority to release an organism that may genetically alter a species shared with neighbouring countries.

My firm belief is that a gene drive is not merely a local experiment. It is a biological intervention in the common inheritance of the planet and it will remain so.

Genetically modified plants and animals can escape human control

The genetic alteration of plants and animals introduces further dangers: unintended effects on nutrition and toxicity, genetic flow into wild relatives, resistant weeds or pests, damage to non-target species, loss of biodiversity, increased agricultural uniformity and dependence on patented biological systems.

Modified fish can escape. Modified insects can fly. Pollen can travel considerable distances. Seeds can be dispersed by wind, water, animals, machinery and international trade. Microorganisms associated with modified plants can themselves change. The receiving ecosystem is not a sealed experimental chamber.

The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety exists because genetically modified living organisms may have adverse effects on biodiversity and human health, particularly when they move across borders. But its regulatory model remains centred largely upon assessment and management, not upon the more fundamental question of whether humanity should be introducing novel inheritable combinations into the environment at all. Risk assessments are inevitably based upon incomplete evidence. Rare effects may not appear during limited trials. Long-term ecosystem changes may take decades to become visible. By the time damage is recognised, the modified organism may already have reproduced, migrated or interbred.

Unlike a defective machine, a genetically altered population cannot necessarily be recalled by its manufacturer.

Synthetic and “mirror” life could defeat natural defences

Synthetic biology is moving beyond modifying existing organisms toward constructing genomes, cells and biological systems that have no exact natural precedent.

The most extreme example is “mirror life”: hypothetical organisms constructed from mirror-image versions of the molecules used by natural life. In 2024, a multidisciplinary group of scientists warned that mirror bacteria might evade immune defences and natural predators because biological recognition frequently depends on molecular orientation. They concluded that such organisms might cause untreatable infections and irreversible ecological disruption and argued that mirror bacteria should not be created. This warning exposes the weakness of incremental regulation. If science continues advancing every enabling technology until the final step becomes technically feasible, a moratorium imposed at that final step will have, in my opinion, arrived too late. The expertise, components, automation and infrastructure will already exist.

The only reliable way to prevent mirror organisms is to prohibit not only their final assembly but also coordinated research specifically intended to make their construction possible.

There are some experiments whose successful completion would itself be the failure.

Genetic modification creates deliberate-misuse capabilities

Every method capable of producing a beneficial biological change may also be adapted to create harm. The same knowledge used to alter host range may facilitate the targeting of a new species. The same approach used to evade an unwanted immune reaction may aid immune escape. The same technology used to improve a microbial manufacturing strain may increase the environmental survival of a pathogen. The same gene-delivery system used therapeutically may be adapted for coercive or destructive purposes.

This is the essence of dual-use research.

The WHO acknowledges that advances in synthetic biology, genome editing, virology, artificial intelligence and related fields may cause accidental, unintended or deliberate harm to human beings, animals, agriculture and the environment. Its current framework nevertheless seeks to manage these dangers while preserving scientific development. WHO global guidance framework

Management is not enough when the potential consequence is irreversible mass harm.

Information is now distributed globally within seconds. Laboratory automation reduces the practical expertise previously needed for complex procedures. AI can assist in analysing vast biological datasets and designing genetic sequences. DNA synthesis converts digital instructions into physical material. Cyberattacks may expose unpublished sequences, experimental records and model weights.

The boundary between cyber risk and biological risk is dissolving. A stolen password may become the first step in a physical biological incident.

Oversight is structurally conflicted

The organisations deciding whether genetic experiments should proceed frequently have strong incentives for them to proceed.

Researchers want publications, prestige, grants, patents and career advancement. Universities want funding and intellectual property. Biotechnology companies want commercial products. Military agencies want strategic capabilities. Journals want important papers. Philanthropic foundations want measurable technological achievements. Governments want economic and geopolitical advantage.

Ethics and biosafety committees are often embedded within the same institutions that benefit from approval. Reviewers may be drawn from the same professional networks as the researchers. Funders may support both the scientific projects and the policy organisations supposedly evaluating their risks.

This is not necessarily evidence of individual corruption. It is evidence of a system in which the incentives to proceed are concentrated and immediate, while the risks are dispersed across humanity and the future.

The people exposed to the consequences have no meaningful vote. A farmer cannot refuse pollen arriving from a neighbouring property. A country cannot easily stop a flying gene-drive insect at its border. A future generation cannot consent to inherited genomic changes. An ecosystem cannot appoint a lawyer.

The benefits argument must be confronted honestly

An absolute prohibition would carry real costs. Genetic engineering has contributed to recombinant insulin, clotting factors, enzymes, some vaccines, research models, diagnostic reagents, agricultural products and emerging gene and cell therapies. Abruptly terminating established production systems could harm patients who depend upon them.

That fact must not be concealed.

A credible prohibition should therefore distinguish between the creation or further alteration of replication-competent organisms and the temporary, tightly contained manufacture of essential products through already established systems. Existing patients must not be abandoned. A carefully supervised transition would be required while non-genetic or cell-free manufacturing alternatives are developed.

But the existence of past benefits does not justify unlimited future manipulation.

Humanity routinely prohibits technologies whose risks outweigh their benefits, even when useful applications can be imagined. Chemical and biological weapons are not legitimised because the underlying chemistry and microbiology may also serve medicine. The ethical question is not whether genetic engineering has ever produced something beneficial. It is whether those benefits justify maintaining a technological capability that can create self-replicating hazards with potentially irreversible consequences.

I do not believe they do!!!

Necessity should also be tested rigorously. Many desired objectives can be pursued through sanitation, ecological management, nutrition, conventional breeding, natural-product research, non-replicating therapeutics, cell-free manufacturing, observation of naturally occurring organisms, epidemiology, computational modelling and other methods that do not release engineered heredity into the world. Scientific convenience is not the same as medical necessity.

A global prohibition is required

National regulation cannot control a technology whose products, data and consequences can cross borders. If one country imposes strong restrictions while another offers permissive laboratories and private funding, the activity will migrate.

What is required is a binding international convention prohibiting the deliberate creation or genetic alteration of replication-competent biological organisms.

The convention should prohibit but is not limited too:

• Genetic enhancement of pathogenicity, transmissibility, host range, tissue targeting, immune evasion, environmental stability or resistance to treatment.

• Creation of recombinant or chimeric viruses and bacteria.

• De novo synthesis or reconstruction of complete infectious viral genomes.

• Resurrection of extinct or eradicated pathogens.

• AI-assisted generation of replication-competent biological genomes.

• Creation and environmental release of genetically modified microorganisms, plants, animals or insects.

• Engineered gene drives and other self-propagating genetic systems.

• Creation of mirror bacteria or other self-replicating mirror organisms.

• Alteration of human, animal or plant germ lines.

• Publication or distribution of enabling information when it materially lowers the barrier to producing a dangerous biological agent.

• Private, military, corporate or philanthropic funding of prohibited work.

• Patenting or commercial licensing of prohibited organisms and techniques.

Observation, sequencing and non-interventional study of naturally occurring organisms could continue. Research involving non-replicating molecules, non-heritable treatments and genuinely cell-free systems could continue, subject to ordinary safety requirements. Existing essential medicines produced through established recombinant organisms would require temporary, audited continuity arrangements while safer alternatives were developed.

Enforcement should occur principally through national law under a common treaty. It should include mandatory registration of relevant facilities, independent inspections, transparent funding disclosures, secure destruction of prohibited stocks, protection for whistleblowers, institutional and personal liability, and sanctions against organisations that relocate forbidden work to weaker jurisdictions.

This must not become an excuse for surveillance of ordinary citizens or the centralisation of medical authority. The controls should be directed at the laboratories, corporations, military bodies, governments and funders possessing the capability to manipulate living genomes.

No private foundation should be permitted to evade the prohibition by funding an intermediary. No government should be able to hide behind national security. No university should escape responsibility by describing the work as curiosity-driven science.

The precautionary principle must finally mean something

The precautionary principle is often praised and rarely applied when powerful institutions want an experiment to proceed.

In the case of genetically altered organisms, genuine precaution means recognising four realities.

First, uncertainty is not evidence of safety.

Second, containment reduces risk but cannot eliminate it.

Third, self-replicating organisms can evolve beyond their original design.

Fourth, some forms of biological damage may be irreversible.

If an engineered organism escapes and disappears, the experiment may be recoverable. If it establishes itself, transfers its genes, alters an ecosystem or initiates sustained transmission, no committee can vote the biosphere back to its earlier state.

That is why the moral threshold must be higher than “the anticipated benefit exceeds the estimated risk.” Both sides of that equation are usually speculative, and the people making the estimate frequently benefit from proceeding.

Where the possible harm is unlimited, transboundary and irreversible, the absence of certainty must be the reason to stop.

We must choose restraint while restraint remains possible

Human intelligence has given us the ability to examine the genetic foundations of life. It has not given us complete wisdom about how those foundations interact across species, ecosystems and generations.

The capacity to perform an experiment does not create the right to perform it.

We can study nature without claiming ownership of it. We can treat disease without manufacturing new replicating threats. We can pursue knowledge while recognising boundaries. We can decide that some doors should remain closed because opening them exposes everyone—including those who never consented—to consequences that no laboratory can guarantee it will control.

Genetic engineering is frequently presented as the inevitable future. It is not inevitable. It is a political, financial and moral choice.

I choose the integrity of the biosphere over the ambitions of the laboratory.

I choose the rights of future generations over the prestige of present institutions.

I choose precaution over promises, restraint over hubris and life over the uncontrolled rewriting of life.

The world prohibited chemical and biological warfare because certain capabilities were judged incompatible with human survival. We must now extend that wisdom to the creation of genetically altered, self-replicating organisms.

Before another engineered virus is made more transmissible, before another synthetic genome is converted into a living agent, before another gene drive is released and before synthetic biology produces something that nature cannot recognise or restrain, humanity must say clearly and collectively:

The manipulation must stop. The funding must stop. The laboratories must be redirected toward safer science. And a binding global prohibition must be established while the possibility of prevention still remains.

No individual, corporation, military program, government or private foundation has the right to gamble with the genetic inheritance of the Earth.

Who does he think he is. Greater than God.

Bill Gates is correct that AI-enabled biological terrorism is a genuine emerging threat. But his warning cannot be separated from the fact that his own foundation has financially supported scientists developing precisely the kind of genome-design capability that makes that threat increasingly plausible. That does not prove malicious intent or a Gates-directed bioweapons project.

It does, however, reveal a profound conflict of responsibility.

The central scandal is not that these 16 bacteriophages were themselves human bioweapons—they were not. It is that the technological barrier has been crossed while effective governance remains dangerously behind.

No individual, corporation, military program, government or private foundation has the right to gamble with the genetic inheritance of the Earth.

The manipulation must stop. The funding must stop. The laboratories must be redirected toward safer science. And a binding global prohibition must be established while the possibility of prevention still remains.

CDC — Autism and Vaccines

Updated 22 July 2026, it states that the categorical assertion that “vaccines do not cause autism” is not an evidence-based claim. It further says:

• Existing studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines contribute to autism.

• “Studies supporting a link have been ignored by health authorities.”

• Possible causal links and biological mechanisms require further investigation.

An important distinction: the CDC page does not declare that vaccines have been conclusively proven to cause autism. It declares that the possibility has not been adequately excluded and that the former blanket assurance was scientifically unjustified.

Interestingly, an older CDC autism FAQ, dated November 2024, still says studies show vaccines are not associated with autism—so the CDC website currently contains conflicting statements.

The Children’s Health Defence has filed a lawsuit against the American Academy of Paediatrics

The AAP is the sole named defendant. The case alleges violations of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act—specifically 18 U.S.C. §§1962(c) and (d). It is a civil RICO lawsuit, not a criminal prosecution brought by the Department of Justice. Read the filed complaint.

What CHD alleges

The complaint’s central accusation is that the AAP has spent more than two decades giving parents, doctors and policymakers categorical assurances that the complete childhood vaccination schedule is “fully tested” and safe, while allegedly knowing that the cumulative schedule—as distinct from its individual vaccines—has not been comprehensively studied.

It alleges that:

• The AAP used its journal Pediatrics, its Red Book, HealthyChildren.org and its network of approximately 67,000 paediatricians to disseminate these assurances.

• A 2002 paper led by Dr Paul Offit, calculating that infants could theoretically respond immunologically to approximately 10,000 vaccines simultaneously, was used to answer a broader safety question that the calculation itself did not examine.

• The AAP opposed or discouraged the vaccinated-versus-unvaccinated and alternative-schedule research recommended for consideration by Institute of Medicine reports in 2002 and 2013.

• Pharmaceutical companies—including Pfizer, Merck, Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline—provided financial support to the AAP, while insurers’ performance incentives financially rewarded practices achieving vaccination targets.

• The Red Book, board certification, hospital credentialling and medical-board standards allegedly formed an enforcement structure that punished doctors who departed from the accepted schedule.

• AAP statements, publications and electronic communications constituted repeated acts of mail and wire fraud.

• The alleged “enterprise” included the AAP, vaccine manufacturers, the American Board of Pediatrics and certain influential vaccine spokespeople.

CHD compares the alleged conduct to the tobacco industry’s historic strategy—not because the products are identical, but because it says both systems used ostensibly authoritative scientific organisations to create a misleading public narrative. CHD’s explanation of its case.

The individual plaintiffs

Andrea Shaw’s claim originally alleged that her 18-month-old twins died eight days after receiving DTaP, hepatitis A and influenza vaccinations. The complaint stated that no alternative cause had been identified and that a homicide investigation reflected the medical system’s refusal to consider vaccination.

Shanticia Nelson alleges that her one-year-old daughter died less than twelve hours after receiving six injections during a catch-up appointment.

“Jane Doe” alleges that a school medical consultant rejected exemptions written by her daughter’s treating doctors, after which the child was vaccinated and experienced further medical problems.

Dr Paul Thomas and Dr Kenneth Stoller allege economic and professional injuries arising from disciplinary action over their vaccination practices and medical exemptions.

CHD itself seeks relief in a representative capacity for members of its community.

What the plaintiffs want

They seek:

• A judicial declaration that the complete schedule has not been proven safe and that specified AAP statements were materially misleading.

• An injunction compelling the AAP to publish corrective disclosures in the Red Book and other publications.

• An order preventing further unqualified safety claims.

• Treble damages for the individual plaintiffs’ alleged economic losses.

• Legal costs and attorneys’ fees.

• A jury trial.

The AAP’s response

On 3 April 2026, the AAP filed a motion asking the court to dismiss the entire case. Its principal arguments are that:

• A scientific dispute or research limitation is not fraudulent racketeering.

• The complaint fails to identify sufficiently precise, objectively false statements made with an intention to deceive.

• It does not plead the alleged mail and wire fraud with the particularity required by federal law.

• Donations, professional cooperation and shared policy positions do not establish a criminal RICO enterprise.

• The AAP does not license vaccines, control medical boards or make individual treatment decisions.

• The alleged injuries depend upon intervening decisions by doctors, regulators, schools and other parties, making causation too remote.

• CHD has not established organisational or associational standing.

• Private civil-RICO plaintiffs may not be entitled to the sweeping corrective injunction requested.

The AAP characterises the case as an attempt to transform disagreement over scientific evidence into accusations of criminality. Read the AAP’s dismissal memorandum.

A major subsequent complication

On 29 June 2026, an Idaho grand jury indicted Andrea Shaw on two counts of first-degree murder, alleging that she suffocated her twins. Prosecutors say the autopsy findings and other evidence support smothering; her defence continues to dispute that account and maintains that the children became severely ill after vaccination. Shaw has pleaded not guilty.

An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction, and she remains entitled to the presumption of innocence. Nevertheless, it directly contradicts the complaint’s assertion that no alternative cause of death had been identified. It therefore seriously weakens the causation allegations attached to the lead plaintiff, although it does not automatically dispose of the claims made by the other plaintiffs. Where the case stands

The AAP filed its dismissal motion on 3 April; the plaintiffs filed their opposition on 9 June; and the AAP filed its reply on 14 July. As of 23 August 2026, the public docket records no decision on that motion. The case remains pending, but it has not reached discovery or trial, and no court has found that the AAP committed fraud or racketeering. Current case docket.

The frank assessment by ‘Chat GPT’

The complaint identifies a legitimate question: evidence concerning the entire cumulative schedule is less comprehensive than evidence concerning individual vaccines and particular combinations. The 2013 Institute of Medicine report expressly supported continuing observational research using systems such as the Vaccine Safety Datalink.

However, the complaint presents only one side of that report. The same IOM committee stated that it found no evidence of major safety concerns associated with adherence to the childhood schedule and no evidence base linking the schedule to the chronic conditions it examined. It recommended further surveillance, not the conclusion that the schedule was fraudulent or unsafe. Read the IOM’s actual summary.

That distinction is legally decisive. An incomplete evidence base, excessive institutional certainty or a poorly disclosed conflict of interest may justify criticism and further research. They do not, without much more, prove deliberate mail fraud, a criminal agreement or direct financial injury under RICO. Corporate funding may establish a reason for scrutiny, but funding alone does not establish racketeering.

The assessment is therefore that the lawsuit raises important transparency and conflict-of-interest questions, but its present RICO formulation faces a high risk of dismissal. The strongest public-interest issue is whether the AAP has communicated the limitations of cumulative-schedule research honestly. The weakest legal proposition is that scientific advocacy, professional guidelines and industry relationships automatically amount to an organised criminal enterprise. Filing this lawsuit is significant; it is not evidence that its allegations have been proven.

And the studies show that unvaccinated children are healthier than the vaccinated.

The Royal Commission Australia Was Denied. New Zealand’s warning and Australia’s continuing failure to confront the COVID years.

New Zealand’s COVID-19 Royal Commission proceeded in two phases, but the experience raises a fundamental warning: a Royal Commission is only as independent and effective as its terms of reference, commissioners, evidentiary processes and willingness to confront those who exercised power.

Phase One was established under the Labour Government and chaired by Professor Tony Blakely, an epidemiologist and public-health physician now based at the University of Melbourne. Blakely had previously co-authored work examining the costs and benefits of lockdowns and, according to the correspondence, had advised the New Zealand Government on aspects of its pandemic response before being appointed. We therefore found it surprising that the Phase One report, while acknowledging that some restrictions lasted too long and caused serious social and economic damage, remained broadly favourable towards the initial response.

Neither phase adequately examined the changing infection-fatality risk of COVID-19 over time. Nevertheless, Voices for Freedom received some recognition during Phase One. Blakely reportedly acknowledged that the organisation had changed the commissioners’ thinking on mandates, represented a “not insignificant minority” of New Zealanders and had published a considerable amount of scientifically accurate material.

After the National-led coalition came to power, public pressure produced a broader second phase. Voices for Freedom helped draft proposed terms of reference, worked with New Zealand First and prepared The People’s Position, an extensive evidence-based submission identifying both the matters requiring investigation and the questions that should be put directly to decision-makers.

The organisation and its experts spent approximately nine hours presenting evidence to the Phase Two Commission. Its public appearance culminated in a contentious cross-examination for which the chair subsequently apologised. More seriously, several central political and public-sector decision-makers declined to give evidence publicly. Although the Commission possessed coercive powers, it did not compel those people to appear publicly and answer questions about policies that profoundly affected the population.

According to the author, some private questioning of decision-makers was remarkably deferential, while many obvious and important questions were never asked despite having been supplied through The People’s Position. The final report did recognise significant harms and the erosion of public trust, but Voices for Freedom’s evidence received only cursory treatment and many of the issues it raised were not substantively addressed.

Voices for Freedom has therefore begun producing The People’s Report. Its first chapter examines New Zealand’s Vaccine Pass: the evidence available to government, the policy’s stated justification, its effects on transmission and vaccination, its implications for fundamental rights and the social consequences of excluding unvaccinated people from much of ordinary life.

The central lesson is that the label “Royal Commission” does not guarantee accountability. What matters is who writes the terms of reference, who appoints the commissioners, which evidence is tested, which witnesses are compelled and whether the inquiry is prepared to ask questions that may embarrass governments and powerful institutions. The official New Zealand terms confirm that Phase Two was confined to specified decisions involving vaccines, mandates, lockdowns, testing and tracing, and excluded several other categories of decision-making. For Australia, the warning is unmistakable. Governments closed borders, confined people to their homes, closed schools and businesses, restricted employment, imposed vaccine mandates and certification systems, disrupted medical care and spent extraordinary amounts of public money. Whatever position one takes on the original justification for those decisions, measures of such magnitude require rigorous retrospective examination. An inquiry must determine whether they were necessary, proportionate and supported by the evidence available at the time; what contrary evidence was considered; how collateral harms were weighed; whether rights were protected; and whether government advisers and regulatory institutions acted independently and transparently.

The second part of the correspondence identifies three further developments in international pandemic policy.

First, a ten-point “Reality Check” has been prepared for Australian parliamentarians. It challenges claims that pandemics and serious outbreaks are rapidly increasing, questions estimates of their overall disease burden, examines the proposed annual expenditure of approximately US$31 billion on pandemic preparedness, considers changes in WHO guidance during COVID-19 and identifies the institutional and financial incentives created by the expanding pandemic-preparedness system.

Second, the University of Leeds REPPARE project’s critique of WHO and World Bank financing assumptions has now appeared as a peer-reviewed academic Perspective. It questions the calculations, assumptions and claimed return on investment behind the US$31.1 billion annual preparedness figure and asks whether this level of spending is proportionate when compared with competing global-health priorities.

Third, the WHO Pandemic Agreement remains incomplete in an important practical sense. The main text was adopted in May 2025, but it cannot proceed to signature and ratification until the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing annex is finalised. Negotiations remain unresolved over pathogen samples and genetic sequences, contractual obligations and the vaccines, diagnostics and treatments that supplying countries would receive in return. The disagreement concerns equity, reciprocity, sovereignty and the distribution of benefits between countries supplying biological information and countries or corporations controlling pharmaceutical manufacturing. Commentary: Australia’s Great COVID Betrayal

Anthony Albanese approached the 2022 election telling Australians that a national reckoning was unavoidable. His exact words must be recorded honestly: “Whether that be a Royal Commission or some form of inquiry, that will need to happen.” It was not an unconditional promise that the process must carry the title “Royal Commission,” but it was unmistakably an undertaking that the pandemic response would receive a serious and credible assessment. What Australians ultimately received was not a national reckoning. It was a government-designed administrative review—selected by the government, supported by a taskforce inside the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, deprived of Royal Commission powers and expressly prohibited from investigating actions taken unilaterally by state and territory governments. That exclusion was breathtaking. Many of the most coercive measures Australians experienced—prolonged lockdowns, curfews, border closures, school closures, restrictions on movement, policing of public-health orders and major employment mandates—were imposed or administered by the states. Excluding unilateral state decisions was not a minor technical limitation. It removed much of the beating heart of the controversy.

The panel undoubtedly performed useful work. It received 2,201 submissions, conducted roundtables and produced nine guiding recommendations, 19 immediate actions and seven medium-term actions. But useful policy analysis is not the same thing as accountability. The inquiry was built to ask how government might manage the next crisis more effectively—not to compel every responsible official to explain, under oath and in public, whether the last crisis was managed lawfully, proportionately, honestly and competently. When journalists asked Albanese what a Royal Commission could do that his inquiry could not, he answered: “Nothing.” That assertion was plainly wrong. A Commonwealth Royal Commission can summon witnesses, compel the production of documents, take sworn evidence, obtain search warrants and punish refusal, false evidence, document destruction and contempt. These are not decorative distinctions. They are the machinery that prevents powerful witnesses from deciding for themselves whether, how and where they will answer questions. The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee subsequently recommended a properly constituted Royal Commission, complementary state legislation, comprehensive terms of reference and public consultation on those terms. That rejection was an act of political cowardice.

Australians were subjected to the greatest peacetime exercise of government power in their lives. Families were separated. Businesses were destroyed. Children lost schooling and social development. People were prevented from working. Medical procedures were postponed. Australians were stranded interstate and overseas. Citizens were pressured to accept medical interventions under threat of losing employment, education, travel and participation in ordinary society. Enormous public expenditure was committed, frequently under emergency conditions and limited scrutiny.

Yet when the time came to account for these decisions, the Prime Minister offered a controlled review without the powers required to force reluctant officials into the witness box.

This was not sufficient. It was an administrative debrief dressed up as accountability. It allowed government to speak endlessly about “lessons for the next crisis” while avoiding the far more threatening question: who was responsible for the failures of this one?

The government’s refusal does not prove a conspiracy or cover-up. It does, however, create the entirely reasonable appearance of institutional self-protection. A government confident that the decisions were sound should welcome compulsory testimony, full document production, public hearings and searching cross-examination. It should not fear the evidence. It should demand that the evidence be exposed.

New Zealand demonstrates that even a Royal Commission may be tamed by narrow terms, cautious commissioners and deferential questioning. But Australia has done something worse: it has refused even to establish the body possessing the powers needed to penetrate official silence.

Albanese cannot credibly say that Australians received the inquiry they were led to expect. They received the inquiry his government was comfortable controlling. The people who exercised unprecedented power were protected from unprecedented scrutiny. Those who bore the harms were invited to make submissions, while those responsible for the decisions were spared compulsory public examination.

That is not accountability. It is political containment.

Australia still requires a genuinely national Royal Commission with bipartisan and publicly consulted terms of reference, an independent judicial chair, full coercive powers and participation by every state and territory. It must investigate lockdowns, border closures, school closures, vaccine procurement and indemnities, mandates, certification systems, vaccine-safety surveillance, restrictions on medical practice, the evidentiary basis of public-health advice, National Cabinet secrecy, censorship and information control, economic damage, mental-health consequences and the proportionality of every intervention.

The Prime Minister must stop pretending that a departmental inquiry was an adequate substitute. History will not measure his conduct by the report his government commissioned. It will measure him by the questions his government refused to compel anyone to answer.

THE INQUISITION OF JOURNALISM

Why ABC 7.30’s defence of Anthony Fauci was an abandonment of public-interest journalism

A taxpayer-funded broadcaster owes the public questions, evidence and pluralism — not a televised brief for the defence.

A verdict the ABC earned.

The ABC did not report an inquiry into Anthony Fauci. It staged a defence case. The 17 August 2026 edition of 7.30 used the visual grammar of current affairs - archive, expert interviews, congressional footage and sober narration - while arranging those elements toward a predetermined verdict: Fauci as distinguished public servant, his questioners as vindictive zealots, the lab-origin issue as venom, released records as humiliation, and accountability as persecution. The closing image, ‘I stand with Fauci’, was not an incidental social-media flourish. It was the programme’s argument reduced to four words.

That is an extraordinary failure by a taxpayer-funded national broadcaster. Australians are entitled to expect the ABC to test power, especially power exercised during an emergency that closed schools and businesses, restricted movement, divided families, conditioned employment on medical compliance and disciplined doctors who challenged official policy. Instead, 7.30 asked viewers to sympathise with the official who wielded extraordinary influence and to distrust the legislators seeking answers. It inverted the proper direction of scrutiny.

The condemnation must be institutional and personal in the proper sense. The ABC commissioned, broadcast and archived the piece. Sarah Ferguson presented the programme and lent its flagship authority to the segment. Adam Harvey reported and authored the treatment. There is no need to pretend that Ferguson wrote every line or that Harvey alone controls ABC editorial policy. Their responsibilities are different, but neither is zero. Ferguson fronted an overwhelmingly one-sided item without an on-air caveat or corrective question. Harvey supplied the loaded narration, the asymmetrical guest list and the decisive omissions. Both helped convert advocacy into the appearance of objective journalism.

The language was a verdict before the evidence

The loaded wording is relentless. Fauci is said to have ‘led the fight’ against COVID and to have provided a ‘steady hand’. His critics are associated with ‘venom’, ‘humiliation’, ‘trashing’ and an ‘inquisition’. Americans are told to have turned on restrictions when those measures interfered with what they ‘wanted to do’, as though objections to lost livelihoods, closed schools, coerced vaccination, delayed care, isolation and civil-liberty restrictions were merely selfish impatience. Even the title — The inquisition of Dr Anthony Fauci over COVID - decides who is victim and who is persecutor before the viewer hears a serious allegation.

Contrast that generosity with the treatment of Fauci’s critics. Republican senators appear principally as flashes of anger and profanity. Rand Paul is granted one short question, immediately wrapped in Harvey’s claim that the scrutiny carries ‘venom’. No critic is interviewed at length. No scientist or lawyer is invited to explain the strongest evidentiary case for congressional scrutiny. No vaccine-injured person, dismissed worker, censored doctor, parent of a child harmed by school closure, or advocate of early treatment is given comparable human depth. The audience is shown rage without reasons and defence without cross-examination.

The early-treatment controversy is reduced to a Donald Trump montage: hydroxychloroquine, followed immediately by the ultraviolet-light remark. Whatever one concludes about hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, remdesivir or other disputed treatments, that edit is a rhetorical shortcut. It invites ridicule without examining trials, changing evidence, regulatory decisions, prescribing restrictions or the clinicians who argued that early treatment deserved a serious hearing. The ABC did not resolve the controversy. It used Trump to make inquiry itself look foolish.

The source balance is equally revealing. The principal expert voices — Gavin Yamey, Georges Benjamin and Sharon Lewin — are all favourable to Fauci. Lewin is expressly introduced as someone who worked closely with him, yet that proximity is treated as a credential rather than a potential source of partiality. Former prosecutor Amanda Vaughn addresses the procedure and possible penalty, but she does not test the substantive allegations. The result is not a difficult conversation. It is a chorus.

The records were not merely gossip

The most serious editorial misconduct lies in what the programme omitted. Harvey told viewers that critics released Fauci’s diary and text messages because they were ‘determined to humiliate him’. He then selected two self-regarding diary excerpts about fame and admiring nurses. That choice trivialised the release as voyeurism and vanity-hunting. Yet only one week earlier, senators had published a January 2021 text chain in which Fauci raised a theoretical association between significant post-dose fever or immune reaction and first-trimester miscarriage. Walensky called it a good point. On 16 August — the day before the ABC broadcast — additional released material reported that NIAID Vaccine Research Center director John Mascola had messaged Fauci that initial studies avoided first-trimester vaccination because of fever and higher miscarriage rates.

Precision is essential. Those messages record a theoretical concern; they do not prove that an mRNA vaccine caused miscarriage. Later observational research and a systematic review generally found no increased miscarriage risk, although the review itself noted limitations in the evidence base. But that scientific qualification does not rescue the ABC. It deepens the indictment. A responsible current-affairs programme could have explained exactly what the messages did and did not establish, then asked whether pregnant women in early 2021 received adequate disclosure while controlled pregnancy data were limited. Instead, 7.30 concealed the substance and told viewers the records were released to humiliate Fauci.

The same 16 August release included a May 2021 email from then acting FDA commissioner Janet Woodcock about reports of chronic, complex post-vaccination symptoms that conventional surveillance systems might miss. She urged study rather than dismissal. Fauci forwarded the message and wrote that it could not be ignored. Again, this email is not proof of every injury attributed to vaccination. It is proof that senior officials were privately discussing surveillance blind spots and the need for research. The ABC broadcast its defence of Fauci within twenty-four hours and said nothing about it.

This omission mirrors the concern developed throughout my previous Substack writing: official uncertainty was too often discussed privately while public communication hardened into slogans; people who raised good-faith questions were grouped with false claims; and the media substituted confidence management for informed consent. The ABC’s own 2021 RMIT Fact Check coverage placed pregnancy concerns inside a package advertised as ‘debunked misinformation’ and repeated official assurances that surveillance had found no significant concern at any stage of pregnancy. The problem is not that every online claim was valid. Some were not. The problem is that the ABC treated the boundary of permissible inquiry as whatever public-health authorities were prepared to acknowledge at the time.

The lab-origin issue was grossly misrepresented

Harvey’s description of a ‘lab-leak theory’ driven by ‘venom’ is indefensible in the context of the public record available on 17 August 2026. The origin of SARS-CoV-2 remains a contested question most probably of laboratory origin, and official bodies have reached different conclusions at different confidence levels. That uncertainty should have led to careful reporting. Instead, the programme deployed a dismissive label and omitted the material that made the question impossible to wave away.

The HHS Office of Inspector General found that NIH and EcoHealth Alliance did not effectively monitor awards and subawards, including funding connected with the Wuhan Institute of Virology. A US House select committee’s 2024 final report concluded that a laboratory origin was most likely and criticised NIH, EcoHealth and the handling of the Proximal Origin paper; that report is a congressional finding, not a judicial verdict, but it is plainly relevant. Most strikingly, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence published a June 2026 release alleging that Fauci influenced intelligence assessments and that US-funded Wuhan research was linked to the pandemic. Those are serious executive-branch allegations and remain contestable; a journalist should test them. The ABC did not test them. It pretended they did not exist.

That is not balance following the weight of evidence. It is evidence avoidance. The ABC was free to challenge Rand Paul, the House report, the current ODNI leadership and every allegation arising from the released communications. It could have interviewed scientists defending zoonosis and scientists supporting a research-related origin. It could have separated the fact of US funding flows from the unresolved question of causation. What it could not honestly do was reduce the issue to ‘venom’ and then call the resulting defence impartial current affairs.

Accountability is not persecution

The Fifth Amendment point requires the same discipline. Fauci’s invocation of the constitutional protection against self-incrimination is not proof of guilt. The author’s previous work has expressly preserved that qualification, and this review does too. Nor is the Senate contempt dispute legally simple: the committee majority says the pardon and prepared statement affected Fauci’s claim of privilege, while the ranking minority says the contempt resolution lacks a sound legal basis and threatens constitutional protections. Those competing positions deserved sober treatment.

But constitutional entitlement does not convert the underlying questions into persecution. Nor does it make public accountability an attack on science. Fauci was not an obscure laboratory worker dragged before a mob. He was one of the most influential public officials of the pandemic era, a regular media presence whose advice shaped restrictions, mandates, vaccine promotion and the definition of acceptable scientific speech. A democratic legislature examining that record is performing oversight. The ABC’s repeated use of ‘inquisition’ and ‘persecution’ delegitimised scrutiny itself.

The asymmetry is morally jarring. Ordinary doctors in Australia and elsewhere were expected to repeat the official catechism while evidence was evolving. Some faced investigation, suspension, deplatforming or professional ruin for departing from authorised messaging. Patients who described vaccine injury often struggled to be heard. Yet when a senior architect of public policy asserted his full constitutional rights, the ABC’s instinct was protective sympathy. The powerful official was allowed complexity; the dissenting doctor and injured citizen were not even invited into the frame. A powerful institutional delusion.

A breach of the ABC’s own professed standards

The ABC’s editorial standards require due impartiality, a diversity of perspectives within a reasonable timeframe, care not to present analysis as the ABC’s editorial opinion, and avoidance of undue favour toward one perspective. Its guidance says contentious current affairs should make real efforts to include principal perspectives and that interviewers should challenge broadly agreeing guests. This segment fails that test on its face.

Three sympathetic experts were allowed to praise Fauci’s record, character and scientific contribution. Their assertions were not meaningfully challenged. Yamey’s sweeping counterfactual claim that hundreds of thousands of people would be alive had they been vaccinated was broadcast without method, uncertainty range or a competing expert. Benjamin’s statement that people rejected restrictions when they interfered with what they wanted to do was allowed to reduce complex social, medical and constitutional harms to selfishness. Lewin’s character testimony - highest integrity, commitment to truth - appeared in the companion article without being tested against the current controversies. The ABC did not merely fail to balance these claims; its reporter joined them through narration.

The programme’s companion digital article makes the advocacy still more explicit. Its headline and summary describe Fauci’s ‘persecution’, say that health professionals are frightened by his treatment, and give extensive space to supporters who call the hearing a show trial and lab-origin allegations a ridiculous conspiracy theory. A reader can disagree with the committee and still recognise that this is a brief for one side. The ABC’s public-service duty is not satisfied by inserting a few hostile Senate clips into a narrative whose architecture tells audiences whom to admire and whom to despise.

Sarah Ferguson’s failure as presenter

Sarah Ferguson’s stature makes the failure more serious, not less. 7.30 is sold to Australians as a flagship programme of scrutiny. The presenter’s role is not ceremonial when a segment arrives with loaded narration, a uniform guest list and major omissions. Ferguson put the authority of her office behind a story that treated Fauci’s reputation as the central injury and the public’s unanswered questions as a threat to vaccine confidence.

She could have introduced the piece as a contested account. She could have noted that current official releases raised substantive questions beyond the two diary quotations shown. She could have asked why no critic, no vaccine-injury advocate and no dissenting scientist appeared. She could have demanded that claims of hundreds of thousands of counterfactual deaths be evidenced. She did none of those things on air. The result was not neutrality by silence. It was endorsement by presentation.

Ferguson should therefore be condemned for allowing the flagship she fronts to become a vehicle for institutional self-protection. The criticism is about her public journalistic function, not an invented claim about her private motives. Australians cannot know her personal view, and they need not. They can judge what she presented: a segment whose title, script, sources, omissions and closing slogan all favoured Fauci.

Adam Harvey’s failure as reporter and compere

Adam Harvey’s responsibility is more direct. He wrote and voiced the decisive editorial phrases. He chose ‘venom’. He chose ‘humiliate’. He chose ‘inquisition’. He chose to describe released diary and text material through two vanity excerpts while suppressing the policy and safety communications made public days earlier. He chose to humanise Fauci through a long career retrospective and to render critics through anger, profanity and protest footage. He chose a concluding montage of supportive posts and ‘I stand with Fauci’.

Those are not stray infelicities. They are a coherent editorial design.

Harvey did not follow the evidence into a difficult story; he arranged evidence to protect a protagonist. He did not interrogate power; he pathologised the act of interrogation. For a reporter on 7.30, that is a grave professional failure and a betrayal of the programme’s purpose.

The larger pattern: narrative consolidation

This broadcast cannot be excused as one poor item. It belongs to the pattern described across my Substacks and longer work: the ABC repeatedly treated government health messaging as the safe centre, marginalised dissenting experts, amplified ‘safe and effective’ certainty, helped legitimise mandates and social division, and failed to give sustained attention to vaccine injury, informed-consent failures, early-treatment controversies, questions about possible post-vaccination cancer signals, and the professional coercion of doctors. Signals and temporal associations are not proof of causation; they are reasons for investigation. The mechanisms of media failure need not amount to a secret conspiracy. Narrative capture can arise through institutional homogeneity, dependence on the same approved experts, fear of legitimising dissent and the professional incentives of a media culture that confuses consensus with truth.

That distinction matters. The review does not need to prove that the ABC took instructions from the Trusted News Initiative or any government department. The observable failure is sufficient: a narrow range of permissible opinion, repeated reliance on institutionally aligned voices, moralised treatment of dissent, and omission of evidence that complicates the authorised story. Whether produced by coordination or conformity, the democratic consequence is the same — epistemic closure.

Public trust cannot be commanded by repeating that criticism damages trust. Trust is earned through candour, correction, disclosure of uncertainty and visible willingness to investigate one’s own prior reporting. The ABC segment said scrutiny of Fauci would weaken vaccine confidence. It failed to consider the opposite possibility: confidence collapses when institutions conceal uncertainty, caricature critics and defend officials after serious contrary evidence enters the record.

What genuine public-interest journalism would have done

A defensible 7.30 report would have begun with the contempt dispute but widened the lens. It would have explained the competing legal arguments over the Fifth Amendment and the pardon. It would have identified the specific subjects Fauci declined to address. It would have examined the August 2026 pregnancy and surveillance communications with the explicit caveat that signals and theoretical concerns are not proof of causation. It would have compared the current ODNI allegations, the House committee findings, the HHS OIG audit and the scientific case for zoonosis. It would have interviewed at least one serious critic and challenged every guest, including Fauci’s defenders. It would have asked how the same institutions that demand public trust propose to restore it through transparency.

Most importantly, it would have treated Australians as adults. It would not have hidden contested evidence out of fear that viewers might lose faith in vaccines or public health. Journalism is not risk communication on behalf of authorities. Its function is to tell the public what is known, what is alleged, what remains uncertain and who bears responsibility for answering the unanswered.

Conclusion: the ABC must answer for this

The 17 August broadcast was a disgrace to the ABC’s public mandate. Its sins were not merely imbalance or poor phrasing. It transformed one of the largest accountability disputes of the post-pandemic period into a sentimental defence of a powerful official. The attack appears to have been orchestrated by more than the two people involved but they are the responsible parties. It minimised the substance of newly released records, misrepresented the lab-origin controversy, excluded principal critics, used openly loaded narration and ended with a declaration of solidarity. It was advocacy pathetically disguised as current affairs.

The ABC should publish a correction or substantial follow-up, disclose how the guest list and framing were approved, and provide comparable airtime to the strongest evidence-based critics. Sarah Ferguson should explain how this item satisfied the standards of 7.30. Adam Harvey should answer for the choice to call substantive document releases humiliation and for omitting the most consequential contents. The broadcaster should also commission an independent review of its COVID-era editorial decisions, including the treatment of mandates, coercion of injection of an experimental gene therapy, vaccine injury, pregnancy evidence, early treatment, lab-origin reporting and medical dissent.

Beyond the ABC, Australia needs an independent Royal Commission with subpoena power capable of examining pandemic decision-making, conflicts, censorship relationships, regulatory coercion, informed-consent failures and the media’s role in enforcing official narratives. Its terms should permit investigation of misfeasance and malfeasance wherever the evidence leads. They should also permit evidence relevant to any properly supported allegation of serious criminality, including crimes against humanity, with referral to competent authorities where warranted — while respecting due process and never treating an allegation as proven wrongdoing.

The final judgment on this programme is severe because the failure was severe. Sarah Ferguson and Adam Harvey did not give Australians a rigorous account of Anthony Fauci’s record. They gave Fauci protection under the ABC’s most prestigious current-affairs banner. They asked the public to stand with him before they had shown the public what he was being asked to answer. That is not fearless journalism. It is institutional cowardice, and Australians paid for it.

Reforming Global Health for an Age of Mistrust, Fragmentation and Overlapping Crises.

Summary of the article

The article argues that the global health system is being destabilised by overlapping pandemic threats, climate change, armed conflict, economic inequality, geopolitical rivalry and falling development assistance. Its authors contend that the central problem is no longer a shortage of reform proposals, but the absence of a coherent political process capable of aligning them. See my discussion of the authors below.

They organise their prescription around three themes:

1. Rebalancing power. Aid-recipient countries should have greater authority over national health priorities, donors should align their funding with country-led plans, regional organisations should gain influence, and civil society and community groups should be given a more meaningful role. Sounds lovely.

2. Reinforcing systems. Donors should move away from narrow, disease-specific programmes and invest in primary care, laboratories, health workforces, surveillance, regulation and financing systems able to serve routine needs as well as emergencies. Health policy should also be linked with climate, conflict, development and macroeconomic policy. We need more money.

3. Restoring trust. Governments and institutions should improve public financing, data governance, communication and social participation; donors should offer more predictable and accountable partnerships; and WHO governance and financing reforms should give low- and middle-income countries greater oversight. We will reinforce social license and inclusiveness.

To operationalise this agenda, the authors propose several connected reform tracks: independent initiatives led by supportive heads of state; a WHO-hosted process; adoption and implementation through the World Health Assembly; broader coordination through the UN General Assembly; and regional coalitions able to proceed when universal consensus fails. Pooled financing, joint planning and interoperable systems would provide the machinery of coordination.

The article contains several valid observations. It recognises that global health is fragmented, that donor priorities often override local needs, that institutions protect their own budgets and mandates, that geopolitical interests distort health assistance, and that legitimacy ultimately turns on power. Its conclusion is that reform should be judged by whether it closes the gap in access to essential health services. It’s all b……t.

Global Health Reform Without Repentance

The architects of failure ask for a larger drawing board

The article begins with a truth: the global health architecture is fractured, mistrusted and increasingly incapable of commanding public confidence.

It then performs an extraordinary manoeuvre. Having diagnosed a crisis created by concentrated power, institutional self-preservation, donor dominance and political manipulation, it prescribes more coordination through the same class of institutions whose conduct is now in question.

More WHO. More World Health Assembly. More United Nations. More pooled financing. More interoperable data systems. More “head-of-state champions”. More transnational machinery operating across health, climate, finance, trade, security and development. This is not a transfer of power. It is a renovation of the control room.

The wallpaper may change. The people holding the levers do not.

A confession disguised as a reform agenda

The authors make several revealing admissions. Donors impose priorities. Recipients accept misaligned programmes because they fear losing money. Multilateral bodies tolerate duplication because their governance structures reward institutional survival. Health assistance is used to secure diplomatic leverage, pathogen data, supply chains and critical minerals.

These are not minor defects in an otherwise sound machine. They are evidence of a political economy built around dependency, influence and self-preservation.

Yet no one is held responsible.

Which institution distorted national priorities? Which donor attached which condition? Which programme displaced primary care? Which decision-makers benefited? Which failures cost lives? Where are the audits, the names, the contracts, the minutes, the data and the consequences? The article speaks confidently about “accountability” while providing no mechanism by which the powerful would actually be made accountable. It offers architecture without adjudication, governance without liability and reform without reckoning. This was not accountability. It was administration.

Sovereignty — but only within approved boundaries

The article states that sovereignty is the precondition for equal cooperation. Correct. But almost immediately, sovereignty is confined within a framework whose “legitimising anchors” are the WHO, the World Health Assembly and the UN General Assembly. Coalitions of willing states may advance reforms when consensus fails. Global health law is presented as a platform for rebuilding trust. Interoperable systems and cross-sector coordination are to reach into climate, finance, security and development.

So what happens when a sovereign parliament, a national government or a population says no? What happens when citizens reject the priorities of the “head-of-state champions”? What happens when local evidence conflicts with a global norm? What happens when a country refuses to share sensitive data, accept a programme, adopt a declaration or subordinate domestic policy to an international timetable?

The article never squarely answers these questions. Its model permits national participation, but only inside an architecture whose destination has largely been chosen in advance. That is sovereignty by invitation. Sovereignty on licence. Sovereignty until it becomes inconvenient. Cooperation among nations can be valuable. Subordination is something else. The distinction is not semantic. It is constitutional, democratic and moral.

Trust is not a communications problem

The weakest section is the one the article treats as indispensable: restoring trust.

The authors acknowledge political polarisation, democratic backsliding, human-rights violations and questionable donor motives. But at community level they quickly return to the familiar language of “misinformation”, social media, artificial intelligence and declining vaccine confidence. Once again, the public is placed in the dock. Mistrust becomes an information disorder. Dissent becomes a communications obstacle. The institutional response becomes better messaging, more “credible communication” and more management of the public narrative.

But trust is not a public-relations input. Trust is a verdict.

People do not owe trust to institutions because those institutions describe themselves as scientific, equitable or multilateral. Trust must be earned by conduct. It requires candour about uncertainty. It requires access to evidence. It requires disclosure of conflicts. It requires correction of error. It requires tolerance of dissent. It requires consequences for deception, coercion and abuse. The article asks how institutions can restore confidence without first asking what those institutions did to lose it.

Where is the serious accounting of pandemic-era decision-making? Where is the examination of censorship, mandates, emergency powers, conflicts of interest, suppression of professional dissent, opacity of contracts and the sidelining of ordinary clinical judgement? One need not accept every criticism of pandemic policy to recognise that these matters are central to the crisis of legitimacy. Yet they are almost entirely absent. You cannot censor your way to credibility. You cannot model your way to consent. You cannot label your critics and call the label evidence.

And you cannot rebuild trust by demanding it from the people you have refused to answer.

The missing sovereign is the human person

The article discusses power among donors, recipient governments, multilateral institutions, regional blocs, ministries, civil-society organisations and private actors. But the most important unit of sovereignty is barely visible: the individual human being.

Where is bodily autonomy? Where is voluntary and fully informed consent? Where is the right of a patient to refuse? Where is the right of a doctor to exercise independent clinical judgement? Where is the protection of scientific dissent, freedom of speech and due process?

A health system may be impeccably coordinated and still be coercive. It may be fully interoperable and still violate privacy. It may be generously financed and still serve institutional interests before human needs. It may speak endlessly of equity while treating the individual as an object of policy rather than the subject of rights.

The first purpose of medicine is not to make populations administratively legible. It is to care for persons. Without that principle, “global health” can become health without the patient and governance without consent.

Mandate expansion masquerading as systems thinking

The article folds pandemics, routine healthcare, climate change, food systems, migration, armed conflict, macroeconomics, trade, finance, development and security into a single global-health frame. Some of these forces plainly affect health. But recognising an influence does not automatically justify transferring authority over that domain to global health institutions.

If every determinant of health becomes a global-health mandate, there is almost no field of human activity left outside its reach. Agriculture becomes health policy. Energy becomes health policy. Speech becomes health policy. Trade becomes health policy. Fiscal policy becomes health policy. National security becomes health policy.

This is how institutional missions metastasise: not through a dramatic seizure of power, but through the apparently reasonable claim that everything is connected to everything else. Systems thinking can illuminate relationships. It can also erase boundaries. The authors never supply a limiting principle. They do not tell us which powers global health bodies should not possess, which decisions must remain national, which decisions must remain local, and which decisions belong to the patient alone.

An architecture without boundaries does not merely coordinate. It expands.

Follow the money — all the way

The authors criticise donor incentives and institutional competition, but their own solution remains deeply dependent on pooled funding, multilateral finance, development banks, the IMF, the World Bank, public-private initiatives and global market-shaping organisations. This is precisely where a serious reform paper should become forensic.

Who funds the agenda? Who selects the priorities? Who owns the technology? Who controls procurement? Who holds the intellectual property? Who profits from the emergency? Who evaluates the intervention? Who has access to the raw data? Who bears liability when the intervention causes harm?

The article names CEPI, Gavi, the Global Fund, Unitaid and the private sector, yet does not submit this ecosystem to the same rigorous analysis it applies to geopolitical conditionality. It calls for transparency but does not propose a radical public register of financial relationships, grants, contracts, advisory roles, lobbying, intellectual-property interests and revolving-door appointments across the global-health complex.

“No competing interests” declared by the authors is not the same thing as no structural conflicts in the system they defend. The problem is not simply that money is insufficient. The problem is that money purchases priorities, access, influence and silence.

What genuine reform would require

Real reform would begin with limits, rights and consequences—not another summit and not another layer of coordination.

It would require:

1. A return to prevention and primary care, with health measured in human wellbeing rather than programme reach, product uptake or bureaucratic compliance.

2. An independent public accounting of pandemic-era governance, with access to contracts, models, data, meeting records, advisory processes and the evidentiary basis for major interventions.

3. Radical conflict-of-interest disclosure, covering governments, regulators, researchers, journals, foundations, pharmaceutical companies, public-private partnerships and multilateral agencies.

4. Legally enforceable informed consent and bodily autonomy, without coercion through employment, education, travel, licensing or access to public life.

5. Protection for scientific disagreement and medical independence, including due process for clinicians and researchers who challenge official policy in good faith.

6. National democratic control over international commitments, with parliamentary scrutiny, transparent ratification, clear reservations, opt-out provisions and withdrawal rights.

7. Open data and independent replication, so that institutional claims can be tested rather than merely repeated.

8. Liability and remedy, including accessible compensation and adjudication when programmes or emergency measures cause harm.

9. Sunset clauses and institutional failure tests, so that bodies which duplicate, underperform or exceed their mandate can actually be closed.

10. Genuine localisation, in which communities control priorities and resources rather than merely supplying legitimacy to plans developed elsewhere.

That would be the best but temporary reform. It would redistribute not merely the seats at the table, but the authority to say NO!!!

The final contradiction

The article’s finest sentence is also the one that undoes its argument:

“Reform is ultimately a contest over power.”

Exactly.

The question is not whether global health needs a cleaner organisational chart. The question is who commands, who complies, who profits, who decides and who pays when those decisions are wrong.

The authors want institutions to be trusted without first requiring them to become trustworthy. They want sovereignty without an enforceable right of refusal. They want participation without ceding control. They want accountability without defendants. They want reform without repentance.

This is not a programme for global health reform. It is a proposal to preserve the existing order by making it broader, smoother and more presentable.

Everything less than truth, consent, transparency and accountability is a whitewash.

The Authors

Addendum: The Global Health Club Investigates Itself

Seven authors, one closed circuit of power

Let us begin with the allegation that cannot honestly be made.

I have found no public evidence that these seven authors personally accepted bribes, embezzled money or committed a criminal act. To allege that would be reckless.

But bribery is only the crudest form of corruption.

Institutional corruption is subtler. It occurs when a system’s incentives, careers, funding relationships, prestige hierarchies and revolving networks bend an institution away from its stated public purpose. The participants may be intelligent. They may be sincere. They may even believe themselves to be reformers. Yet the system continually promotes those who enlarge its authority, cite its assumptions and speak its language.

That is the issue here.

These authors present themselves as diagnosticians of a failing global-health architecture. But many are not standing outside that architecture. They are its advisers, former officials, commissioners, consultants, legal theorists, programme managers and beneficiaries of its prestige economy.

They are not auditing a foreign machine.

They are describing the machine from inside the control room—and recommending a larger control room.

The declaration that declares almost nothing

The Nature Health page gives the article a reassuring ethical benediction: “The authors declare no competing interests.” Yet Springer Nature itself says competing interests can include professional relationships that may be perceived as relevant to a manuscript, and that relationships capable of influencing—or appearing to influence-a work should be disclosed.

Consider what the bare declaration does not tell the ordinary reader.

It does not say that one author has worked across WHO, the World Bank, PAHO, USAID, the US health bureaucracy and the ACT-Accelerator. It does not say that another sits on WHO, Africa CDC, UNFPA and IPPF advisory bodies. It does not say that another previously headed the scientific secretariat of a WHO commission and is affiliated with a United Nations university institute. It does not say that another belongs to a WHO-established pandemic panel. It does not say that another is a former WHO Representative and WHO director who now co-chairs a partnership hosted by WHO in collaboration with the World Bank and OECD. It does not say that another consults for international organisations while helping construct the intellectual field of global health law.

Perhaps none of these relationships meets the journal’s technical threshold for a competing interest. But that is precisely the problem. A disclosure rule that produces “no competing interests” from a group so professionally entangled with the institutions under discussion is too narrow to illuminate the conflict that matters.

The conflict is not necessarily a secret payment.

It is institutional alignment.

Arush Lal: an insider’s guide to insider reform

Arush Lal is the corresponding author and the paper’s principal intellectual entrepreneur. His LSE profile records work or roles involving USAID’s COVID-19 Response Team, WHO, the World Bank, PAHO, the US Office of Pandemics and Emerging Threats, the ACT-Accelerator and the Chatham House Commission for Universal Health.

That is an impressive résumé. It is also an itinerary through the very ecosystem the article proposes to strengthen.

Lal is therefore not merely studying global-health architecture as an external observer. His professional authority has been accumulated through proximity to its central organisations, initiatives and policy networks. Again, this does not establish personal dishonesty. It establishes something more relevant to the article: a powerful institutional standpoint that the two-word conflict declaration leaves invisible.

The circularity continues in the bibliography. Of the article’s fifteen references, three are Lal’s own publications. Seven of the fifteen directly name at least one of the seven authors. The authors diagnose the system, substantiate the diagnosis with their own writings and then prescribe a future that enlarges the domain in which their expertise carries value.

This is not independent corroboration. It is a citation circle.

The paper speaks of “rebalancing power”, but Lal’s model does not remove power from the transnational policy class. It improves the policy class’s coordination. The governors become better networked; the governed become better consulted.

That is not devolution. It is professionalised centralisation.

Luchuo Engelbert Bain: the adviser’s web

Luchuo Engelbert Bain’s published biography describes service on advisory groups connected with WHO, Africa CDC, UNFPA and the International Planned Parenthood Federation. It also records his previous management of a roughly CAD100 million global-health portfolio at Canada’s International Development Research Centre.

The relevant criticism is not that such experience is disqualifying. It is that extensive participation in funding, advisory and implementation networks should be treated as central context when an author recommends how those networks should be governed and expanded.

Bain writes from the junction at which research, finance, policy, advocacy and implementation meet. Yet the article asks readers to accept the collective judgement of its authors without mapping how their advisory positions, institutional relationships and professional interests intersect with the reforms proposed.

The system calls this expertise.

The public is entitled to call it proximity to power.

A genuine anti-corruption analysis would ask whether the same individuals and organisations repeatedly rotate between identifying problems, defining solutions, distributing funds, advising implementation and evaluating outcomes. The article does not ask. Its authors inhabit that world too comfortably to place the revolving structure itself on trial.

Nelson Aghogho Evaborhene: dissent absorbed by the architecture

Nelson Aghogho Evaborhene presents a more complicated case. He is a PandemiX doctoral fellow whose work centres on pandemic governance. In 2023 he led a paper explicitly expressing scepticism about the Pandemic Treaty and Pandemic Fund, criticising the treaty’s top-down approach and calling for equity, transparency and stronger African regional institutions.

That earlier scepticism deserves acknowledgement. It shows that he cannot fairly be caricatured as an uncritical defender of every global institution.

But it also sharpens the contradiction in the present article.

What becomes of that scepticism when the final prescription once again relies upon WHO-hosted reform, World Health Assembly legitimacy, UN General Assembly coordination and interoperable transnational systems? Has the architecture been made accountable—or has dissent merely been incorporated into its vocabulary?

This is how resilient systems preserve themselves. They absorb the language of sovereignty, equity and decolonisation. They place it in preambles, panels and consultation documents. They recruit articulate critics from the global south. Then the institutional centre remains exactly where it was.

Representation changes. Command does not.

Evaborhene’s presence gives the paper a language of African agency. But agency that must remain “interoperable” with the prevailing global-security architecture risks becoming autonomy with an umbilical cord—permitted to move, never permitted to separate.

Sharon Friel: when health becomes a jurisdiction over everything

Sharon Friel is an ANU professor of health equity, director of the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse and Australian Research Centre for Health Equity, a principal visiting fellow at the United Nations University’s International Institute for Global Health, and a former head of the scientific secretariat for WHO’s Commission on Social Determinants of Health. Her work on commercial power, inequality and the political economy of health may be entirely sincere. The danger lies elsewhere: in the conversion of every social, economic and environmental question into a global-health jurisdiction.

Climate, trade, food, finance, energy, migration, urbanisation and security all affect health. But if everything affecting health becomes governable through a global-health frame, there is no meaningful limit to the field’s mandate. This is technocratic empire by conceptual expansion.

The language is benevolent. The jurisdiction is potentially total.

Friel rightly criticises concentrated corporate power. But concentrated bureaucratic power does not become benign merely because it is exercised by academics, international agencies and people fluent in the language of equity. Public institutions can also become self-referential, coercive and insulated from consequence.

One form of concentrated power is not cured by another.

Joanne Liu: independence appointed from above

Joanne Liu brings formidable humanitarian credibility from her years with Médecins Sans Frontières. That service should not be belittled. But her present institutional position still requires scrutiny.

McGill identifies Liu as director of its Pandemic and Emergency Readiness Lab and a member of the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, established by WHO. The panel’s own account states that its co-chairs were appointed by the WHO Director-General, that they selected the panellists, and that the panel reported to WHO’s governing bodies. That panel may have criticised WHO. Its members may have acted conscientiously. But independence is not created merely by placing the word “Independent” in a title.

A body commissioned through the institutional chain it reviews is not equivalent to a tribunal created by citizens, courts or genuinely external investigators. Its structural independence should be demonstrated, not assumed. Liu’s involvement illustrates the global-health club’s preferred model of accountability: senior insiders appoint distinguished insiders, supported by expert insiders, to review institutional insiders and recommend stronger international institutions.

Everyone is eminent but no one is answerable to the injured citizen.

Magda Robalo: the revolving door standing still

Magda Robalo embodies the article’s institutional circularity more clearly than any other author.

WHO’s own biography identifies her as a former WHO Representative and WHO Director of Communicable Diseases, a former health minister and Presidential High Commissioner for Guinea-Bissau’s COVID-19 response, and the current co-chair of UHC2030. UHC2030 states that it is hosted by WHO in collaboration with the World Bank and OECD.

Now consider the loop.

A former WHO official, now co-chairing a WHO-hosted global partnership, co-authors an article arguing that WHO should host the reform process and that the World Health Assembly should serve as its legitimising anchor. The article then declares no competing interests. This does not prove bribery. It does not prove bad faith. It proves that the conventional disclosure system is almost comically incapable of describing institutional self-interest.

Robalo may genuinely desire equity. But the model she endorses asks the global-health establishment to investigate, redesign and legitimate itself. The people who travelled through the system become the custodians of its reform. The revolving door no longer needs to revolve; the same people can occupy several sides of the structure at once. This is governance by interlocking directorate.

Benjamin Mason Meier: writing the law that enlarges the lawmakers

Benjamin Mason Meier is a professor of global health policy, a senior scholar at Georgetown’s O’Neill Institute, a Global Health Law Consortium leader and a consultant to international organisations, governments and NGOs. His scholarship focuses expressly on rights-based global-health governance and the role of international law.

He is therefore not a neutral technician who happened upon the idea of expanding global-health law. He is one of the field’s intellectual architects and advocates.

There is nothing improper about advocacy. The impropriety begins when advocacy is presented as detached expertise, when an argument for expanded international legal authority is wrapped in the prestige of science, and when the author’s professional investment in that governance paradigm disappears behind “no competing interests”.

The legal language of rights can protect human beings. It can also be used to move decisions away from voters, parliaments, patients and local clinicians into distant systems of norms, reporting mechanisms and expert interpretation. Rights without enforceable consent can become duties imposed on the individual. Law without democratic proximity can become administration with a moral vocabulary.

Meier’s framework demands a question the article avoids: who protects the individual from the global institutions claiming to protect humanity?

Nature Health: prestige laundering behind a paywall

The publisher also deserves scrutiny.

Nature labels this piece a Comment, not primary research. It contains no original dataset capable of proving that the proposed architecture will restore trust. It is an argument by seven policy insiders, supported by only fifteen references—at least seven of which directly include members of the author group.

Yet the Nature name confers a glow of scientific authority that the article’s evidentiary structure does not earn.

Then comes the final irony. A commentary lamenting inequity and calling for more inclusive global governance is offered on Nature’s public page for CHF34.95. The global poor may be invoked as the moral foundation of the argument. They are not necessarily invited to read it.

This is the political economy of academic prestige: publicly important claims, privately controlled access, insider citation networks and a declaration form that makes institutional entanglement disappear.

The article calls misinformation a threat to trust. Nature should ask whether prestige laundering, paywalls and inadequate disclosure also corrode trust.

The corruption is the closed loop

The corruption exposed here is not a brown envelope passed beneath a table. It is a closed system in which:

• institutions help manufacture the experts;

• experts advise the institutions;

• institutions fund and platform the experts;

• experts cite one another;

• journals convert opinion into prestige;

• policy networks describe their own expansion as reform;

• and the public is told that mistrust arises from misinformation.

Failure rarely ends a career in this system. It creates a new commission.

A failed programme produces a review. The review produces a framework. The framework produces a partnership. The partnership produces a secretariat. The secretariat produces indicators. The indicators demonstrate the need for more funding. The funding sustains the institutions that designed the programme.

This is not a conspiracy. It is an incentive structure.

And incentive structures can corrupt public purpose without requiring every participant to be corrupt.

Questions the seven authors should answer

Before these authors ask the world to entrust more authority to WHO, the WHA, the UN system and their surrounding networks, they should answer plainly:

1. What present and former advisory, consulting, funding, governance and professional relationships do they have with every institution their article proposes to empower?

2. Who funded the work, meetings and networks from which this article emerged?

3. Why were seven of fifteen references drawn directly from the authors’ own publications?

4. What failures would cause them to recommend reducing—not enlarging—WHO or UN authority?

5. Which global-health powers must never override national parliaments?

6. Which powers must never override patients, parents or clinicians?

7. What enforceable right of refusal accompanies their model of cooperation?

8. Who is liable when a globally coordinated intervention causes harm?

9. What independent body, structurally separate from WHO and its partners, would investigate misconduct?

10. Why should the public accept “no competing interests” when the article’s authors are so extensively embedded in the ecosystem under review?

Until those questions are answered, the article should be read not as an independent blueprint for reform but as a manifesto from a professional class seeking to preserve its jurisdiction.

THE LICENCE AS LEASH

Australia issued its warning before it knew the future. There is a particular kind of violence that does not leave a bruise.

It arrives as a letter.

The letter is written in the bloodless dialect of administration: notification, immediate action, public interest, professional standards. It does not shout. It does not need to. It tells a doctor that the profession for which he sacrificed youth, sleep, money and years of his life has been taken from him - now, before any final hearing, sometimes before he has seen the full case against him. His patients are redistributed. His income stops. His reputation is fed into a search engine. His family learns that due process is a luxury item: available, perhaps, after years of litigation, if he can afford it and if there is anything left to restore.

This is how a modern liberal democracy can destroy a person while insisting that no punishment has yet occurred. Australia calls it “protective”, not punitive.

That verbal trick is the first obscenity. If the state takes a doctor’s livelihood, vocation, standing and patients for years, the ruin does not become merciful because a lawyer classifies it as an interim measure. A boot on the neck does not become a pillow because an administrator changes the label.

The attached article about Dr Pierre Kory’s case in California matters because an American court has now looked directly at the same trick—the attempt to convert disputed speech into “conduct”, “treatment”, a “standard-of-care departure” or an “informed-consent violation”—and said that constitutional protection cannot be defeated by wordplay.

Australia should read that judgment as an accusation.

California built an orthodoxy. A court found the emergency exit.

The attached article below recounts the rise and partial collapse of California’s attempt to police COVID-era medical speech. In 2022, California enacted AB 2098, deeming the dissemination of COVID-19 “misinformation” to patients a form of unprofessional conduct. The law attached professional jeopardy to information said to contradict “contemporary scientific consensus”. It never solved the central problem: who determines that consensus, at what moment, using which evidence, and with what protection against political or institutional self-interest?

That defect was not academic. The pandemic was a period in which evidence changed rapidly and arguments about transmission, natural immunity, masking, vaccination, myocarditis and early treatment were often treated as moral offences before they could be resolved as scientific questions. California’s answer was not humility. It was a threat attached to a medical licence.

AB 2098 was enjoined in separate litigation and later repealed, effective 1 January 2024. Yet the claimed power survived the statute. California’s boards maintained that ordinary disciplinary provisions could still reach the same COVID speech if it were redescribed as substandard care or deficient informed consent.

So, on 2 January 2024, Kory and fellow physicians Le Trinh Hoang and Brian Tyson sued. They initially lost. The district court treated words spoken during treatment as regulable professional conduct, and the Ninth Circuit affirmed the denial of preliminary relief.

Then came Chiles v. Salazar. In March 2026, the United States Supreme Court held by 8–1 that a state cannot strip speech of constitutional protection by calling it conduct or treatment. Justice Neil Gorsuch’s formula was devastatingly simple:

“The First Amendment is no word game.”

On 5 August 2026, Senior US District Judge William B. Shubb applied that principle in Kory v. Bonta. He granted a preliminary injunction preventing California’s Attorney-General and medical boards from investigating, prosecuting or sanctioning the three physician plaintiffs because of the viewpoint of their COVID advice, including because their advice departs from the position of public-health authorities. The order says the boards may not convert a physician’s refusal to convey the government’s position on a contested COVID question into an informed-consent or standard-of-care charge.

The limits matter. This is preliminary relief, not a final judgment. It protects three physicians, not every doctor in California. It does not immunise negligent examinations, dishonest certificates, unsafe prescribing or false records. It does not declare every opinion held by Kory, Hoang or Tyson scientifically correct. What it does is almost more important: it separates a regulator’s legitimate power over demonstrable professional misconduct from an illegitimate power to punish disfavoured viewpoints as such.

The distinction is the difference between a medical board and a ministry of truth.

The attached article also places the injunction beside the July 2026 Senate testimony of Dr Anthony Fauci. An official Senate committee resolution confirms that Fauci appeared, gave a prepared statement and then invoked the Fifth Amendment in refusing to answer questions. The article says he invoked it 111 times and uses the episode as a savage image of institutional asymmetry: doctors were expected to speak the official catechism without hesitation, while one of the most powerful architects of that catechism later declined to answer under oath.

Invoking the Fifth Amendment is not proof of guilt, and any honest account must say so. But it does expose the grotesque imbalance. Ordinary doctors faced the possible loss of their licences for questioning claims made in real time. Senior officials retained the full armour of constitutional procedure when called to account later.

The little doctor was required to be certain; the powerful official was permitted to be silent.

Australia issued its warning before it knew the future

Australia’s regulatory position was blunter.

On 9 March 2021, Ahpra and the National Boards issued a COVID-19 vaccination position statement. It expressly acknowledged that information about COVID-19 and vaccination was still developing. In the same document, practitioners were warned that anti-vaccination statements, advice contradicting the “best available scientific evidence”, or efforts to undermine the national immunisation campaign could trigger investigation and regulatory action. Practitioners with a conscientious objection were told not to discourage patients from vaccination.

Read those propositions together. The information was developing, but the permitted conclusion had already arrived.

This was not merely advice to avoid fabrication, disclose uncertainty, take a proper history or obtain informed consent. Those are ordinary and essential professional duties. The statement tied professional acceptability to consistency with a government campaign. “Best available evidence” and “do not undermine the campaign” were pushed into the same regulatory sentence, as if testing evidence and advancing policy were identical activities.

They are not.

Science asks whether a claim survives challenge. A campaign asks whether a message produces compliance. Medicine serves the person in the consulting room. Public relations serves an objective set elsewhere. When a regulator blurs those roles and holds the doctor’s livelihood as collateral, “consensus” stops being a description of evidence and becomes an instruction to obey.

The cruelty is magnified by Australia’s constitutional weakness. Australia has no general constitutional right to freedom of speech.

The implied freedom of political communication is a limit on governmental power arising from representative government; the High Court repeatedly says it is not a personal right comparable to the US First Amendment. An Australian doctor can engage in obviously political speech and still discover that the constitutional shield is thin, indirect and brutally expensive to test.

California’s doctors could ultimately say: the state is discriminating against our viewpoint. Australian doctors must navigate a colder maze: statutory powers, “public interest” judgments, merits review, judicial review, distinctions between speech and practice, and an implied freedom that protects the constitutional system rather than the speaker as an individual.

The licence therefore becomes a leash. The regulator need not prove its case promptly to achieve silence. It need only make the cost of dissent professionally suicidal.

William Bay: the case that stripped away the euphemisms

No Australian case exposes the machinery more brutally than Bay v Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Dr William Bay, then a Queensland GP registrar, publicly campaigned against COVID-19 vaccination. He spoke online, protested outside Ahpra’s office and interrupted an Australian Medical Association conference. His speech was confrontational. Some of his claims were grave. None of that entitled a regulator to bias, lawlessness or procedural ambush.

The Medical Board suspended his registration in August 2022 on the basis of five notifications. He was put out of medicine immediately.

More than two years later, the Supreme Court of Queensland set the suspension, investigations and tribunal referral aside. Justice Thomas Bradley found apprehended bias and a failure to afford procedural fairness. The judgment stressed that the five complaints concerned political meetings, broadcasts, protests or demonstrations—not Dr Bay’s clinical practice. None alleged that clinical services he provided failed to meet professional standards. The Board’s role did not extend to protecting government and regulatory bodies from political criticism.

Then the judgment became an autopsy of administrative behaviour.

The Board and Ahpra produced critical evidence revealing the errors in the suspension decision only on the final day of the hearing. The evidence had been available to them. The Court found that the regulators had the means to identify that the Board had acted beyond power, yet spent years seeking to prevent Bay’s judicial-review application from being heard. Justice Bradley described their conduct as “profoundly unsatisfactory” and said the unexplained defence of the suspension indicated an “animus” consonant with the bias infecting the original decision.

That is not the language of a crank blog or a furious protester. It is the Supreme Court of Queensland describing the conduct of bodies entrusted with fairness, public protection and professional integrity.

Bay did not win every constitutional argument he advanced. The Court rejected his attack on the validity of the national regulatory scheme. Nor did it decide that his claims about vaccines were medically correct. Those qualifications do not rescue the regulators. They make the core finding harder to evade. Even without endorsing Bay’s science or constitutional theory, the Court found bias, unfairness, action beyond power, late disclosure and an institutional animus.

The Board was supposed to protect the public from unprofessional conduct. Who protects the public from an unprofessional regulator?

A costs order is not an answer. It does not return two years of a career. It does not restore training opportunities, income, professional relationships or the ordinary dignity of waking up with useful work to do. The decision retrospectively set aside the suspension, but a court order cannot retroactively reopen a clinic or give a family back the nights spent wondering whether ruin was permanent.

In Australia, vindication can arrive after the punishment has eaten the thing being vindicated.

Suspension first. Hearing someday.

Bay is not an isolated warning about delay. The “immediate action” system permits suspension before final disciplinary findings when the statutory threshold is met. There are legitimate reasons for such a power: a regulator must be able to stop a genuinely dangerous practitioner before another patient is harmed. But emergency power is morally defensible only when paired with scrupulous neutrality, prompt disclosure, a swift merits determination and a real remedy for error.

Without those safeguards, “immediate” describes only the destruction. Justice moves at administrative speed.

The Victorian litigation involving Dr Valerie Peers illustrates the structural trap. She challenged the continuation of an immediate-action suspension arising from COVID-19 vaccination exemptions and related conduct. In 2026, the Victorian Court of Appeal accepted that the Board has an implied statutory duty to decide whether to refer alleged professional misconduct to VCAT within an objectively reasonable time. But by then a referral had been made, leaving no outstanding act for mandamus to compel. The legal pathway existed in theory; delay could narrow the remedy in practice.

That is a system capable of converting time into institutional immunity. Suspend first. Investigate at length. Refer before the court can compel referral. Then point to the referral as proof that the machinery is moving. The doctor remains outside medicine while each gear congratulates the next gear for turning.

Dr Mark Hobart was suspended in November 2021 amid allegations concerning large numbers of COVID-19 vaccination and mask exemptions and ivermectin prescribing. He denied wrongdoing. His challenges to the immediate suspension failed, and substantive proceedings followed. Whatever the final view of his clinical conduct, years out of practice before final resolution are not a procedural footnote. They are the sanction. A legal system that calls this “interim” is using grammar to conceal chronology.

Do not replace one orthodoxy with another

Regulators also abandon the discipline of justice when they confuse disagreement with danger, political criticism with clinical incompetence, provisional guidance with eternal truth, or an allegation with a concluded case. The answer to regulatory orthodoxy is not dissident orthodoxy. It is evidence, particularity, proportionality and fair process.

Every case must be separated into its real components:

• What exactly was said?

• Was it political speech, patient-specific advice, advertising, prescribing, certification or record-keeping?

• What concrete risk did it create?

• What evidence was available at the time?

• Was the doctor given the complete case and a genuinely neutral hearing?

• Was suspension necessary, or could narrower conditions have protected patients?

• How quickly was the final allegation determined?

• What happens when the regulator itself acts unlawfully?

The current machinery is tempted by bundling. Put the protest speech, clinical opinion, social-media post, prescribing decision and paperwork allegation into one ominous dossier; invoke “public confidence”; impose immediate action; allow time and poverty to do the rest. By the time a tribunal distinguishes the parts, the accused doctor may have been professionally dead for years.

The Kory question Australia cannot avoid

The attached Kory article ends with a proposition that should be unremarkable: a doctor’s primary duty runs to the patient, not to the state. In Australia, that principle was dangerously muddied during COVID by regulatory language demanding consistency with public-health campaigns while admitting that the evidence was still evolving and becoming quite shonky.

Kory v. Bonta does not prove that every dissenting doctor was right. It proves that being licensed does not make a physician’s viewpoint government property. It says a state may punish actual professional misconduct but may not manufacture misconduct out of a refusal to repeat the government’s position on a contested question.

Australia has no equivalent personal constitutional guarantee. That absence is not an abstract civics lesson. It changes the balance inside every consulting room. If the doctor knows that one unapproved conclusion may provoke an emergency suspension, “independent clinical judgment” becomes ceremonial language. The safest doctor is the doctor who says what the regulator already believes. The safest informed-consent discussion is the one that never informs the patient of anything controversial. The safest science is the science that arrives after permission.

That is not safety. It is intellectual sterilisation.

A regulator worthy of trust would welcome hard limits on its own power. It would distinguish political speech from clinical acts with precision. It would publish the evidence for its standards and the uncertainty around them. It would provide the complete case immediately. It would impose the least restrictive protective measure. It would guarantee an expedited independent hearing whenever a livelihood is stopped. It would compensate practitioners when immediate action is found unlawful. It would report its own procedural failures as aggressively as it publicises doctors’ misconduct.

Above all, it would understand that public confidence cannot be manufactured by silencing the people who expose regulatory failure. Confidence earned by censorship is not confidence. It is compliance wearing makeup.

Australia’s medical bureaucracy likes the language of protection. The Bay judgment shows what can hide behind that language: bias, unfair process, unlawful action, withheld evidence and animus. Kory shows why strong regulation must never become viewpoint rule.

The choice is not between medical anarchy and bureaucratic obedience. That is the false choice of every institution that wants power without scrutiny. The real choice is between a system disciplined by evidence and due process, and a system in which the regulator defines truth, prosecutes dissent, controls the timetable and calls the wreckage protection.

Australian doctors have already paid for that confusion with years of their lives.

The brutal question is no longer whether the system can destroy a doctor before proving its case. It plainly can.

The question is why Australia still permits it to do so with so little accountability—and why, after Bay exposed the rot and Kory exposed the constitutional alternative, anyone should trust silence as evidence that the rest of the profession agrees.

Silence under threat is not consensus.

It is the sound a leash makes.

Informed Consent Is Not a Footnote

I listened to the announcement and heard grand language, dramatic statistics and promises of future research. What I did not hear was the reckoning the public deserves.

Calling an executive order “major action” does not make it meaningful. Revising recommendations is not the same as subjecting the entire vaccination programme to independent scrutiny. Promising research is not enough unless the studies are transparent, properly controlled, free from financial conflicts and open to public examination. An order without firm deadlines, enforceable duties and publicly accessible evidence risks becoming political theatre- a way of appearing to act while leaving the same institutions in control.

I am also not satisfied by praise for the polio vaccine as though the word “polio” should end every question. Oral and injectable polio vaccines are different products with different benefits and risks. Historical evidence for one formulation cannot automatically answer every question about every later product, manufacturing process or vaccination schedule. If the evidence is strong, it should withstand rigorous examination. No vaccine should be protected from scrutiny by sentiment, history or repetition.

Separating injections may reduce the number given at one appointment, but spacing is not proof of safety. Five visits instead of one do not answer whether every product is necessary, whether every ingredient has been adequately evaluated, whether the full schedule has been studied as administered, or whether an individual child faces particular risks. Rearranging a programme is not the same as independently examining it.

The same applies to separating measles, mumps and rubella vaccines. Saying that someone has “heard concerns” is not evidence. But declaring the combined product beyond question is not a substitute for evidence either. Families deserve direct comparisons, complete safety data and honest explanations of what is known, what remains uncertain and what has never been adequately tested. They should not be forced to choose between uncritical reassurance and unsupported speculation.

Autism must not be used as a political prop. A dramatic rise in reported prevalence does not, by itself, establish its cause. Changes in diagnostic definitions, recognition and reporting may account for part of that rise, while possible biological and environmental contributors still deserve serious investigation. Neither side should begin with its preferred conclusion and work backwards.

Autistic people are not statistics to be brandished from a podium. They are human beings entitled to dignity, support and honest science. If the government intends to investigate possible causes, it must publish the questions, methods, data, conflicts of interest and results—including findings that contradict the administration’s expectations.

Nor do I accept the claim that this policy has “little downside.” Every public-health decision has consequences. More medical appointments may mean additional costs, time away from work, transportation problems and unequal access. Saying that an administration will “work with families” is not a guarantee. If families are expected to make additional visits, the practical and financial support must be explicit, funded and enforceable.

There is, however, one principle in the announcement that I support without reservation: freely given, full and informed consent.

Informed consent must mean more than obtaining a signature. It requires understandable information about the expected benefits, known risks, important uncertainties, reasonable alternatives and the consequences of declining. It requires time to ask questions. It requires access to the relevant evidence. Above all, it requires a decision made without threats, manipulation or punishment.

Consent extracted through fear of losing employment, education, medical care or participation in society is not freely given consent. Parental choice that exists only when parents agree with the official recommendation is not genuine choice. Public trust cannot be commanded, and it cannot be manufactured through slogans. It must be earned through transparency, accountability and respect.

I want freely given, full and informed consent protected in law, with meaningful remedies when it is violated. I want doctors able to speak honestly, parents able to ask difficult questions and patients treated as autonomous human beings—not as obstacles to a target.

That principle should have been the foundation of the announcement. Instead, it appeared as a reassuring phrase around a policy that leaves too many fundamental questions unanswered.

I will not mistake an executive order for evidence. I will not mistake promises for accountability. I will not accept autism as a rhetorical weapon or vaccine policy as an article of faith.

If the government wants public trust, it must earn it. Open the evidence. Fund genuinely independent research. Disclose conflicts. Admit uncertainty. Protect dissent. Make freely given, full and informed consent enforceable. If it is not given, punitive damages must be awarded and the provider of the vaccination punished.

Everything less is a whitewash.

The Causes of Autism

Children’s Health Defense (CHD) describes autism as a complex developmental condition arising from several interacting causes rather than one isolated factor. It rejects the position that the increase in autism diagnoses can be explained primarily by genetics, broader diagnostic criteria or improved awareness. Instead, CHD argues that genetically or biologically susceptible children may develop autism following environmental and medical exposures during critical periods of brain development.

Vaccination occupies a central place in CHD’s explanation. The organisation argues that vaccines contribute to autism in some susceptible children through immune activation, the cumulative intensity of the vaccination schedule or ingredients such as thimerosal and aluminium adjuvants. It also raises concerns about polysorbate 80, polyethylene glycol, manufacturing residuals, formaldehyde and residual biological material. CHD proposes that administering multiple vaccines close together create a cumulative inflammatory burden, particularly in children with mitochondrial, immune or metabolic vulnerabilities. CHD’s vaccines-and-autism position

CHD also identifies acetaminophen—particularly during pregnancy, infancy or around vaccination—as a contributor. It proposes that acetaminophen can reduce glutathione, an antioxidant involved in processing reactive chemicals, thereby increasing oxidative stress in susceptible children.

Other exposures identified by CHD include pesticides and herbicides such as glyphosate, flame retardants, mercury, lead, air pollution, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, contaminated food or water and, in some publications, mold. CHD describes these exposures as forming a cumulative “toxic load” rather than acting independently.

The biological mechanisms proposed by CHD include:

• Chronic immune activation and neuroinflammation

• Oxidative stress and glutathione depletion

• Mitochondrial dysfunction

• Altered gut permeability and microbiome disruption

• Microglial activation in the brain

• Autoimmune reactions and abnormal cytokine activity

• Impaired metabolic or detoxification pathways

In my professional opinion based on my observations and the available evidence, vaccination is the cause of autism and the autism spectrum.

The Silence of Anthony Fauci: The Man Who Demanded Our Obedience Now Refuses to Answer

On 29 July 2026, Dr Anthony Fauci returned to the United States Congress.

This should have been his opportunity to answer the questions that have accumulated during six years of controversy, contradiction, secrecy and public distrust. It should have been an opportunity to explain what he knew about the origins of SARS-CoV-2, what his agency funded, what risks were recognised, what records were preserved or deleted, and why so many pandemic policies were presented to the public with a certainty that the underlying evidence did not always justify.

Instead, the world witnessed a spectacle of calculated silence.

Before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times—widely reported as 111 invocations-and refused to answer questions about his conduct, his communications, his agency’s research funding and his role in the pandemic response. The hearing lasted approximately three hours. He even invoked the Fifth when asked such elementary questions as what day it was and what kind of tie he was wearing.

I regard that performance as a disgrace.

Let me immediately make one legal point absolutely clear. The Fifth Amendment is a constitutional protection. Invoking it is not, by itself, proof of guilt. No honest commentator should pretend otherwise. A person may rely upon the privilege because truthful answers could expose him to investigation, because ambiguous answers could be misconstrued, or because prosecutors might attempt to construct a new offence from present testimony.

But constitutional legality does not eliminate political, professional or moral accountability.

Fauci was not an ordinary private citizen dragged unexpectedly into a police interview. He was one of the most powerful public-health officials in modern history. For decades, he controlled or influenced enormous research budgets, advised presidents and shaped international health policy. During COVID-19, his words affected schools, businesses, hospitals, universities, workplaces, travel, vaccination policies and the basic civil liberties of hundreds of millions of people around the globe.

He did not hesitate to speak when his pronouncements carried authority.

He did not hesitate to appear before cameras.

He did not hesitate to criticise dissenters.

He did not hesitate to tell the public what precautions it should take, which scientific opinions were supposedly credible, what conduct was responsible and what conduct was dangerous.

Yet when summoned under subpoena to account for the record, he transformed himself from the voice of certainty into the embodiment of silence.

That is not leadership.

It is the antithesis of leadership.

From “Trust the Science” to “I Invoke the Fifth”

For years, Fauci’s public authority rested on a carefully cultivated identification between himself and science itself. His statements were frequently treated not merely as expert opinions but as declarations of scientific truth.

The public was encouraged to trust him because he represented the institutions of science.

But science is not a person. It is not an office, a title, a television personality or a government department. Science is a method of inquiry built upon evidence, replication, transparency, challenge, correction and an acceptance that even prestigious authorities can be wrong.

The moment a scientist places himself beyond questioning, he ceases to represent the scientific method and begins to represent institutional power.

The tragedy of Fauci’s congressional performance was not merely that he remained silent. It was that his silence followed years during which others were expected to speak, comply, disclose, submit and obey.

Doctors were threatened professionally for questioning official policies. Scientists were ridiculed for considering a laboratory-related origin. Citizens were told that disagreement was misinformation. Families were divided over mandates. Workers lost employment. Children lost education, normal social development and precious years of childhood.

Fauci now insists that Senator Rand Paul has an “unhinged obsession” with prosecuting him. He claimed that the hearing was intended to make him say something—anything—that could be used to put him behind bars. His lawyers characterised the investigation as an obsessive and groundless vendetta. Democratic senators similarly described the proceedings as partisan persecution and a campaign against science.

Those arguments deserve to be heard. Congressional hearings can certainly become partisan theatre. Senatorial questioning can be aggressive, prejudicial and designed for television. Fauci is entitled to legal counsel, due process and the presumption of innocence.

But accusations of partisanship do not answer the underlying questions.

Calling Rand Paul obsessive does not explain the documentary record.

Calling the hearing a witch-hunt does not reconcile inconsistent statements.

Calling criticism an attack on science does not establish that every policy was sound, every representation accurate or every research programme responsibly supervised.

Fauci attempted to turn the hearing into a trial of Rand Paul’s motives. But Paul’s personality is not the issue. The central issue is whether a senior public official gave Congress and the public a complete and accurate account of matters of profound national and international importance.

That question remains unanswered.

The Pardon Makes the Silence More Troubling

Fauci’s refusal is particularly extraordinary because President Joe Biden granted him a broad pre-emptive pardon on 19 January 2025, covering potential federal offences dating from 2014 until the date of the pardon. Biden said the pardon was intended to protect Fauci from politically motivated prosecution.

The pardon does not prove that Fauci committed a crime. Nor does accepting or receiving a pardon necessarily constitute an admission of guilt.

Nevertheless, it creates an obvious public question: if Fauci has been protected from prosecution for conduct occurring during the relevant pandemic years, why can he not give a candid account of that conduct?

His lawyers argue that he could still expose himself to new jeopardy. An answer given in 2026 might become the basis of a new allegation of perjury, false statement or obstruction not covered by the 2025 pardon. Senator Paul argues that the pardon removes the original possibility of self-incrimination and therefore undermines Fauci’s blanket reliance on the Fifth Amendment. The legal question is novel and unresolved; it may ultimately require judicial determination.

I do not pretend that this legal dispute is simple.

But politically and morally, the spectacle is devastating.

Fauci has received protection from prosecution for his earlier conduct, yet he still refuses to describe that conduct. He has been shielded from one set of consequences while claiming that answering questions might create another.

That may be prudent legal strategy.

It is not public accountability.

The American people were not pardoned from the consequences of pandemic policy. The business owner who lost a lifetime’s work received no pardon. The child deprived of schooling received no pardon. The employee dismissed under a mandate received no pardon. The family prevented from visiting a dying relative received no pardon.

Those people lived with the consequences.

The official at the centre of the system received legal protection and then silence.

The Questions Fauci Would Not Answer

The hearing was not concerned merely with whether Fauci had made an occasional error during an unprecedented emergency. Error is inevitable in medicine. Scientific understanding develops. Recommendations must change as evidence changes.

The more serious questions involve candour, research oversight, conflicts of interest, record preservation and the possibility that the public narrative was managed more aggressively than the evidence warranted.

Before the hearing, Senator Paul released more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s pandemic-era diary. The entries recorded discussions with senior officials, scientists and media figures during the crisis. According to reporting on the documents, the early private discussions reflected substantial uncertainty about the virus’s origins, including debate among scientists over whether unusual features might be consistent with laboratory manipulation or experimentation. Fauci’s defenders argue that this simply reflects the normal uncertainty of an emerging scientific crisis. His critics argue that the private uncertainty contrasts with the confidence later projected publicly.

The distinction is crucial.

There is nothing improper about scientists considering multiple hypotheses privately. That is exactly what scientists should do.

The potential misconduct would lie in suppressing a legitimate hypothesis publicly, mischaracterising the degree of private concern, manipulating scientific publication, or using institutional authority to stigmatise questions that officials themselves considered credible behind closed doors.

When the origin of a pandemic that killed millions remains uncertain, every relevant communication, funding decision, risk assessment and scientific discussion should be preserved and examined. There should be no selective release of documents, no linguistic games over definitions, no private backchannels and certainly no casual deletion of official communications.

The Deletion Instructions

The Senate committee’s investigation has placed particular emphasis on emails in which Fauci allegedly instructed recipients to delete communications after reading them.

In September 2025, Chairman Paul’s committee stated that it had obtained a February 2020 email in which Fauci told then-NIH director Francis Collins: “Please delete this e-mail after you read it.” The committee also cited a July 2020 email to Fauci’s chief of staff containing another deletion instruction. The committee contends that these documents conflict with Fauci’s previous testimony concerning federal records and document destruction.

These are allegations advanced by a Republican-led committee. They are not criminal convictions, and the full context and legal status of the communications must be assessed fairly.

But they cannot simply be dismissed.

A senior federal official dealing with a once-in-a-century pandemic should understand that communications concerning the origins of the virus, research funding and government deliberations may constitute records of enormous public importance.

Even if the instruction was casual, unnecessary or unrelated to an attempt at concealment, it demands a clear explanation.

Why request deletion?

Was the email an official federal record?

Was it preserved elsewhere?

Were similar instructions given routinely?

Did any deletion frustrate Freedom of Information requests or congressional oversight?

Did Fauci believe he was entitled to decide personally which communications concerning the pandemic would survive?

These are not trivial questions. Yet the man best positioned to answer them invoked the Fifth Amendment.

The Gain-of-Function Semantic Fog

Another unresolved controversy concerns whether the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology through EcoHealth Alliance.

Fauci previously told Senator Paul that the NIH had not funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan laboratory. Critics argue that experiments supported through EcoHealth enhanced properties of bat coronaviruses and therefore met an ordinary scientific understanding of gain of function. Fauci and his defenders have relied upon a narrower regulatory definition concerning especially dangerous research on potential pandemic pathogens.

This semantic distinction has obscured the central public-policy issue.

The question should not be reduced to whether a particular experiment fitted a bureaucratic definition at a particular moment. The real questions are whether American funds supported experiments that made viruses more infectious, pathogenic or capable of using new cellular pathways; whether those experiments created unacceptable risks; whether they were conducted under adequate biosafety conditions; and whether the grant recipients complied with reporting requirements.

A 2024 House committee hearing highlighted testimony from former acting NIH director Lawrence Tabak acknowledging that research funded through EcoHealth met a broader definition of gain of function, while maintaining distinctions involving the more restricted federal oversight category. Fauci continued to deny that NIH had funded the type of gain-of-function research at issue in his exchanges with Paul.

This is precisely why Fauci’s 2026 silence is so unacceptable.

If his previous testimony was entirely accurate, he should have been able to explain the definitions, the grants, the experiments, the oversight and the documentary record in rigorous detail.

If the disagreement is merely semantic, he should have exposed that semantic confusion.

If mistakes were made, he should have acknowledged them.

Instead, the public received the Fifth Amendment.

Policies That “Sort of Just Appeared”

Fauci’s latest refusal must also be considered in light of his January 2024 congressional interview.

When questioned about the six-foot social-distancing rule, Fauci said that he did not recall the process by which six feet was selected. According to the transcript, the recommendation “sort of just appeared.” He also said he was not aware of studies specifically supporting six feet. When asked about evidence supporting the masking of children, he said he might have reviewed studies but could not specifically recall doing so.

That testimony should have caused a national reckoning.

Six feet was not a harmless slogan. It influenced whether classrooms could open, whether businesses could operate, how workplaces were configured and whether ordinary human interaction was permissible.

A policy capable of restructuring society should not “sort of just appear.”

It should have a documented evidentiary basis, a clear chain of responsibility, a process of review, an analysis of foreseeable harms and mechanisms for rapid revision as evidence develops.

Fauci was not solely responsible for every lockdown, school closure, mask rule or vaccine mandate. Presidents, governors, mayors, health departments, regulators, employers, universities and professional bodies made their own decisions. It would be inaccurate to blame one man for every pandemic measure.

But Fauci was the most recognisable scientific authority behind the response. His public standing lent legitimacy to the broader system. He benefited from that authority and repeatedly exercised it.

Authority and accountability must be inseparable.

A public official cannot claim limited responsibility when policies fail while claiming expansive authority when demanding compliance.

The Cult of Expertise

What I condemn most strongly is not merely Fauci the individual. I condemn the culture of unaccountable expertise that he came to represent.

During the pandemic, institutional credentials were too often treated as substitutes for evidence. Questions were judged according to who asked them rather than whether they were valid. Those outside approved institutions were expected to disclose every conflict, defend every statement and tolerate relentless scrutiny. Those inside the institutions were often protected by prestige, bureaucracy and sympathetic media.

This was profoundly anti-scientific.

Real expertise does not fear examination.

Real medicine recognises uncertainty.

Real public health respects proportionality.

Real ethics demands informed consent.

Real scientific leadership does not rely upon censorship or personal authority. It explains the evidence, acknowledges its limits, identifies competing interpretations and corrects errors openly.

I have spent more than four decades in medicine. I understand that clinical and scientific decisions must sometimes be made before all the evidence is available. But uncertainty imposes a duty of humility. It does not grant a licence for authoritarian certainty.

The greater the uncertainty, the more carefully officials should distinguish between established fact, provisional judgment and political policy.

Fauci and the institutions surrounding him repeatedly blurred those categories.

Policy preferences were described as science.

Debatable judgments became moral commandments.

Critics were treated as threats.

Later revisions were explained as the natural evolution of knowledge, while those who had raised the same concerns earlier received neither apology nor vindication from the institutions that had condemned them.

The Defence of Fauci Does Not Resolve the Record

More than 150 scientists, physicians and public-health advocates signed a letter defending Fauci before the hearing. The American Society for Microbiology also praised his decades of scientific leadership, including his contribution to infectious-disease research and programmes such as PEPFAR. Supporters warned that the congressional campaign against him could discourage scientists from public service and undermine confidence in public health.

Fauci’s earlier contributions must be acknowledged. A fair assessment should not erase an entire career or deny beneficial work merely because his COVID-era conduct is under scrutiny.

But distinguished service does not confer lifetime immunity from accountability.

One hundred and fifty scientists cannot answer questions about Fauci’s personal communications.

Professional endorsements cannot explain deletion instructions.

Past accomplishments cannot settle the origin of SARS-CoV-2.

Institutional prestige cannot transform disputed testimony into established fact.

And the phrase “attack on science” cannot become a shield against the investigation of scientists who exercise government power.

Science is strengthened when misconduct is exposed, errors are corrected and institutions are made transparent. It is weakened when prominent scientists are treated as though scrutiny of them constitutes sacrilege.

What Accountability Must Now Mean

I do not call for mob justice. I do not call for punishment based on anger, political affiliation or internet speculation.

I call for lawful, disciplined and relentless accountability.

The Senate committee has announced a contempt vote, reportedly scheduled for 5 August 2026. The legal validity of compelling Fauci’s testimony despite his pardon and Fifth Amendment claim must be resolved through proper constitutional processes.

Congress should obtain and publish all relevant records, subject only to legitimate national-security and privacy protections. Every email, diary entry, grant document, risk assessment, meeting note and communication concerning EcoHealth Alliance, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Proximal Origin paper and federal research oversight should be preserved and independently examined.

Any allegation of destroyed federal records should be investigated by authorities independent of the institutions implicated.

Any apparent inconsistency in sworn testimony should be assessed against the complete transcript and documentary record—not political summaries alone.

Any evidence of criminal conduct should be referred for prosecution and tested in a court of law.

Any finding of administrative negligence, even if not criminal, should be made public.

And if the evidence ultimately clears Fauci of criminal wrongdoing, that conclusion should also be stated honestly.

But exoneration cannot be presumed merely because his supporters call the investigation partisan. Nor can guilt be presumed merely because his critics despise him.

The standard must be evidence.

The Final Betrayal

Fauci’s congressional silence is the fitting final image of a disastrous era.

When the public was frightened, he spoke with confidence.

When dissenters questioned him, he spoke with contempt.

When institutions amplified him, he spoke with authority.

When citizens were ordered to change their lives, he spoke of responsibility.

But when the questions finally turned towards his own responsibility, he pleaded the Fifth.

Again, I recognise his constitutional right to do so. But I also reserve my right—and, I believe, my duty—to condemn the profound hypocrisy of the spectacle.

Fauci asked the public to trust institutions that now resist full disclosure.

He defended policies whose foundations were sometimes uncertain.

He participated in a culture that marginalised legitimate dissent.

He enjoyed extraordinary power without accepting commensurate responsibility.

And in his most recent appearance before Congress, rather than providing clarity, contrition or explanation, he delivered silence.

That silence must not be allowed to end the investigation.

It must intensify it.

The world deserves to know how the pandemic began. It deserves to know what research was funded, what risks were taken, what officials knew and what information was withheld. It deserves to know whether public-health policy was distorted by institutional self-protection, political pressure, conflicts of interest or fear of reputational damage.

Above all, it deserves a system in which no official—however decorated, connected or celebrated—is above accountability.

Anthony Fauci once stood before the world as the voice of unquestionable authority.

On 29 July 2026, he stood before Congress as the voice of no answer at all.

History should remember the difference.

Having weighed the evidence and testimony presented, I have reached the firm personal conclusion that Anthony Fauci is guilty of grave misconduct and should face the full measure of punishment lawfully imposed after an independent and transparent judicial process; however, I would support limited mitigation if he provides complete, verifiable evidence identifying other responsible officials, funders and decision-makers, and if that cooperation leads to their investigation and conviction—not as an escape from accountability, but as recognition that exposing the entire chain of responsibility may serve the public interest.

Beale v Queensland: The Mandates on Trial

A Landmark Challenge Concerning Human Rights, Medical Coercion and Government Accountability

I am deeply honoured to introduce the remarkable story of Jayden Beale and his determined pursuit of truth, transparency and justice. At a time when fear and conformity too often displaced open scientific inquiry, informed consent and respect for individual conscience, Jayden chose the more difficult path: he stood his ground. With limited resources, no powerful institution behind him and much to lose personally and professionally, he asked a simple but profoundly important question - could a government lawfully compel its citizens to undergo a medical intervention while withholding the evidence upon which that coercion was based? His case is about far more than one man’s objection to a government mandate. It concerns bodily autonomy, freedom of conscience, the right to refuse medical treatment, the proper limits of emergency power and the enduring obligation of government to justify its actions with credible evidence.

Jayden Beale describes his four-year legal challenge to the Queensland Government’s COVID-19 vaccination mandates as an unprecedented human-rights and anti-discrimination case. Unlike most mandate litigation, which concerned particular employment disputes, his case challenges the lawfulness of imposing vaccination requirements upon the general population, including people as young as sixteen. He argues that the mandates violated bodily autonomy, religious freedom, the right to refuse medical treatment, the right to life, and the protection against non-consensual medical experimentation.

Beale explains that he was a relatively junior legal professional when the mandates were introduced in December 2021. After studying engineering briefly, playing in a punk-rock band, and completing degrees in law and criminology, he worked at Queensland’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and later in personal-injury and institutional-abuse law. He had also received early exposure to Queensland’s Human Rights Act 2019, which became an important foundation for his case.

He says he had not been particularly involved in the COVID-19 controversy before the mandates. As a Christian who generally avoided pharmaceutical products, however, he did not intend to be vaccinated. When a legal colleague warned that unvaccinated people would be excluded from much of public life, Beale decided that he would challenge the government rather than accept what he regarded as coercion. The decision cost him, by his estimate, approximately 70 per cent of his friends.

His concern intensified after his partner and two friends reported health problems that they associated with their vaccinations, including chest pain, an irregular heartbeat and severe hypertension. Beale also recounts a conversation with a general practitioner who allegedly said he was facing professional action after advising a patient with comorbidities against vaccination. A subsequent encounter with an anti-mandate demonstration convinced Beale that those opposing the policy were ordinary citizens with legitimate concerns rather than the irrational extremists portrayed by parts of the media.

Beale commenced proceedings in the Queensland Supreme Court on the day the mandate took effect. He had little experience in administrative law, was self-represented and had only days to prepare. He recalls that the judge and government barrister initially questioned whether he understood the applicable law or had identified a reviewable decision. After hearing his argument, however, the judge accepted that the case could proceed. Beale presents this as evidence that a determined individual, even without a large law firm or significant resources, can successfully challenge government power.

The proceedings later moved to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal after the mandates ended and a dispute arose over disclosure of the material relied upon by the government. Beale says the government has repeatedly refused to disclose the evidentiary basis for the mandates and has attempted on six occasions to have his case dismissed. He reports that all six dismissal attempts have failed and that the tribunal has now ordered the government to file its evidence.

Beale says his case is supported by thirteen expert reports from medical, scientific and regulatory specialists. He names Professor Wendy Hoy, Professor Robert Clancy, Professor Angus Dalgleish, myself, Dr Philip Altman, Dr Melissa McCann and Dr Luke McLindon, among others. According to Beale, these reports address immunology, medicine, oncology, pharmacology, psychiatry, reproductive medicine, nutritional medicine and pharmaceutical regulation. He contrasts this with what he describes as the Queensland Government’s failure, thus far, to file any expert evidence. He refers to a very well connected medical doctor Jerry Brady as the source of his experts.

The case alleges that the government required people to receive provisionally approved products whose longer-term safety and effectiveness were not established. Beale argues that ongoing phase-three trials and the TGA’s provisional-approval framework meant that safety remained subject to continuing evaluation. From this, he characterises the mandates as non-consensual medical experimentation. He further argues that the risks posed by COVID-19 did not justify coercing the entire population.

Beale particularly condemns the severity of the restrictions imposed upon unvaccinated people. He notes that breaches of public-health directions could theoretically attract substantial penalties, including imprisonment, and says unvaccinated citizens were effectively excluded from libraries, businesses, venues and social life. He regards this as an extraordinary and disproportionate use of government power.

He also discusses Queensland’s Wellcamp quarantine facility. Beale speculates that, because most vaccinated people were being permitted to return to ordinary life, the facility might ultimately have been used to isolate unvaccinated people. He acknowledges that this is his inference rather than an established fact. Nevertheless, he presents the construction of the facility as a warning about how rapidly coercive government policies can escalate when they are not challenged.

Beale emphasises that responsibility for defending the mandates crosses party lines. Although the policies originated under the Palaszczuk Labor Government, he says the succeeding Crisafulli Government has continued to defend them and has described mandates as an important public-health measure. His criticism is therefore directed at the political establishment generally rather than exclusively at one party.

The speech includes serious allegations concerning Queensland Health’s conduct of the litigation. Beale says he wrote to the department in 2024 alleging that the former chief health officer, Dr John Gerrard, had either misled government lawyers or that lawyers had misled the court and introduced material into the factual record improperly. He notes that Gerrard announced his resignation shortly before the department was due to respond. He also says lawyers previously associated with the matter subsequently disappeared from the department’s contact system and that responsibility for the case was transferred to a new Crown Law team.

Beale believes his correspondence and litigation may have contributed to those personnel changes, but expressly acknowledges that this is his opinion. He makes a similar inference concerning the decision not to extend the Queensland Governor’s term, noting that she is a potential witness because of her former role as chief health officer. The timing is notable.

A recent dismissal application reportedly argued that Beale could not rely upon the Bible as the foundation of his religious belief and that the government should not be required to produce evidence defending the alleged human-rights infringement. Beale says the tribunal rejected these arguments, clearing the way for the case to advance toward trial. He expects the trial to occur the following year and believes the government will face substantial difficulty if his thirteen experts remain effectively unanswered.

Beale credits the case’s survival to supporters, donors, volunteer lawyers and particularly retired doctor and biotechnology entrepreneur Jerry Brady, who helped connect him with expert witnesses. He says the litigation has proceeded without a conventional law firm, secure funding or significant media attention and has required him to work late into the night while continuing his government employment.

The speech concludes with a broader message about courage, personal responsibility and institutional culture. Beale accepts that legal and governmental systems can be deeply flawed, but argues that institutions ultimately operate through individuals. Honest and courageous people can uphold justice, while dishonest or incompetent people can corrupt the same system. He urges his audience not to surrender to pessimism but to strengthen honesty, integrity and courage within their families, professions and communities.

Beale believes that a favourable judgment could have consequences far beyond Queensland. If a court accepts that governments imposed inadequately tested medical products through coercive measures, he argues, people in other jurisdictions may use that finding to demand disclosure, accountability and stronger protections for bodily autonomy and informed consent. His central message is that determined citizens can still confront government overreach - and that this case may become an important test of whether fundamental human rights survive during a declared public-health emergency.

I have been privileged to contribute expert evidence to this case and to stand alongside an exceptional group of medical, scientific and regulatory experts. Whatever the tribunal ultimately determines, Jayden has already achieved something significant. He has kept vital questions alive, resisted repeated efforts to prevent those questions from being heard and demonstrated that an individual of courage and conviction can still require powerful institutions to account for their decisions. His perseverance should inspire every Australian who believes that human rights must be protected most carefully—not when circumstances are easy, but when fear, pressure and uncertainty make their abandonment most tempting.

Anthony Fauci and the Architecture of the COVID Era

My Demand for Truth, Evidence and Accountability

I have spent more than four decades challenging a medical system that too often confuses authority with truth, pharmaceutical profitability with progress, and professional conformity with scientific integrity. I confronted this culture during the AIDS era, when I argued that immune function, nutrition and individualised care could not simply be dismissed because they sat outside the prevailing pharmaceutical paradigm. I saw patients, doctors and independent researchers marginalised because their observations did not fit the approved narrative.

When COVID-19 appeared, I recognised the pattern almost immediately.

I saw a novel infectious disease rapidly transformed into something larger than a medical emergency. It became a political emergency, a commercial opportunity, a mechanism for social control and a test of whether populations would surrender bodily autonomy in the name of collective safety. Governments imposed lockdowns, businesses were destroyed, children were removed from classrooms, families were separated, doctors were instructed what they could say, and millions of people were pressured to accept a new medical technology as a condition of employment, travel and participation in society.

I wrote to Australian political and health leaders advocating nutritional and immunological support, including vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc. I believed—and still believe—that governments should have explored every plausible means of reducing vulnerability, supporting immune competence and treating patients early. Instead, the prevailing message was effectively to remain at home, wait until illness became serious, and then await the pharmaceutical solution.

My broader work has described the resulting crisis as a betrayal of informed consent, medical independence and open scientific inquiry. It has called for an Australian Royal Commission with powers to compel testimony, obtain unredacted contracts, protect whistleblowers and investigate the origin of the virus, vaccine approvals, injuries, mandates, censorship and the influence of international bodies such as WHO, Gavi, CEPI and the Gates Foundation.

But I must now make an equally important commitment: I will not replace one form of dogma with another.

I will not accept the establishment’s claim that everything was done correctly, that serious vaccine injuries were negligible, that every critic was irresponsible, or that no conflicts of interest existed. Nor will I declare, without adequate evidence, that every participant knowingly joined a premeditated extermination programme.

The truth may ultimately be extremely damaging to the people and institutions involved. But if I am to demand honesty from them, I must apply the same standard to my own conclusions.

Anthony Fauci was not the entire system—but he was central to it

Anthony Fauci should not be treated as a solitary mastermind who personally designed every pandemic policy, funded every experiment, authorised every vaccine and ordered every mandate. That is not how the system operated.

He was, however, one of its most influential figures.

As director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Fauci occupied a powerful position at the intersection of government funding, infectious-disease research, vaccine development, scientific publishing and public communication. During COVID-19, he became something more: the symbolic embodiment of officially approved science.

Political leaders invoked his authority. Media organisations elevated him. Pharmaceutical programmes benefited from his advocacy. Critics were frequently portrayed not merely as disagreeing with one official, but as opposing science itself.

That concentration of authority deserves serious scrutiny.

It is established that NIH funding passed through EcoHealth Alliance to coronavirus research involving the Wuhan Institute of Virology. An audit by the US Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General examined approximately US$8 million in NIH awards to EcoHealth, including about US$1.8 million in subawards to eight institutions, one of which was the Wuhan laboratory. The Inspector General found that NIH failed to monitor the grants effectively, failed to respond promptly to compliance problems and missed opportunities to address risks associated with the research.

That finding does not prove that Fauci ordered the creation of SARS-CoV-2. It does not prove that the EcoHealth-funded experiments produced the pandemic virus. It does, however, demolish the simplistic impression that American public money had no meaningful connection with coronavirus experimentation at Wuhan.

The controversy over “gain-of-function” research arose partly because Fauci relied on a narrow regulatory definition. In ordinary scientific language, an experiment that increases viral replication, infectivity, host range or pathogenicity may reasonably be described as producing a gain of function. Under the narrower federal regulatory framework, only certain enhanced potential pandemic pathogens were placed within the most restricted category.

Fauci therefore defended his testimony by arguing that the NIH-supported research did not meet the formal regulatory definition he was using.

My conclusion is that his categorical denial was misleading in ordinary language. A more candid answer would have been:

NIH money supported genetically altered coronavirus research in Wuhan, although NIH did not classify that work as federally regulated enhanced-potential-pandemic -pathogen research.

That answer would have acknowledged the experiments while explaining the regulatory distinction.

Instead, the public heard an absolute denial. Whether that amounted to criminal perjury is a different question. Perjury or a knowingly false statement requires proof that Fauci understood his testimony to be false and deliberately gave it anyway. A semantic dispute, evasive wording or an unduly narrow definition may be politically damaging and ethically unacceptable without necessarily satisfying the elements of a criminal offence.

I will not confuse “misleading” with “criminally proved.” But nor will I pretend that the wording was transparent. It is up to the US inquiries to determine the truth from the evidence.

Anthony Fauci’s appearance before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee intensified already serious allegations concerning his conduct during the COVID-19 crisis. Summoned to answer questions under subpoena, Fauci reportedly invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times, refusing to address questions about pandemic policy, vaccine implementation, gain-of-function research and possible federal involvement with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

His refusal was especially striking because he had received a sweeping pre-emptive pardon from former President Joe Biden. Senator Rand Paul challenged Fauci’s reliance on the privilege against self-incrimination, arguing that the pardon removed any credible fear of federal prosecution for the matters covered by it. Paul warned that Fauci’s continued refusal to answer could constitute obstruction of a congressional investigation and that the committee would consider what consequences should follow.

The allegations raised during the hearing were not minor procedural criticisms. They went to the heart of whether one of the most powerful public-health officials in the world misled Congress, concealed government involvement in dangerous research, helped suppress competing scientific views and promoted policies that inflicted immense damage on the public.

Senators Rand Paul, Ron Johnson and Bernie Moreno questioned Fauci about research connected to the Wuhan laboratory, the possible laboratory origin of COVID-19 and the federal government’s role in funding or facilitating gain-of-function experimentation. The central allegation was that Fauci and associated officials may have attempted to distance themselves from research that could have contributed to the creation or emergence of the virus, while publicly dismissing or discrediting those who sought a full investigation.

The hearing also focused on the devastating consequences of the pandemic response overseen and defended by Fauci. Schools were closed, businesses were destroyed, livelihoods were lost, medical care was disrupted and families were divided. Critics alleged that these policies were imposed with inadequate evidence, little accountability and an intolerant attitude towards scientific disagreement.

Fauci was described as slumped, trembling, downcast and visibly fearful. Fauci did not resemble the confident and combative official previously seen before Congress. He appeared like a man deeply concerned about personal culpability and the possibility that his private conduct was finally being exposed.

Particular attention was given to approximately 1,100 pages of diary entries and private records reportedly discovered on government computer systems. According to the broadcast, these documents portray a radically different Fauci from the carefully cultivated public image of “America’s doctor.”

The records were alleged to show a man preoccupied with status, publicity, awards and personal advancement while the country was enduring an unprecedented national crisis. The broadcast claimed that Fauci privately celebrated his growing global prominence, undermined President Trump and other members of the White House task force, and cultivated close relationships with influential media figures.

Among the most serious allegations was that Fauci colluded with CNN journalist Jake Tapper, privately socialised with Tapper and his wife, and supplied or suggested questions that could be used against other public officials. If accurately characterised, such conduct would represent a disturbing alliance between a senior government official and a supposedly independent journalist, designed not merely to inform the public but to manipulate the political and media narrative.

The broadcast further alleged that Fauci directed taxpayer-funded government employees to work on applications for private awards and financial prizes from which he personally benefited. Such conduct, if established, would raise serious questions about misuse of public resources, conflicts of interest and potential violations of federal ethics rules.

Taken together, the allegations paint a profoundly troubling picture: a senior public servant who may have concealed critical information, misled elected representatives, promoted destructive policies, coordinated with sympathetic media figures, marginalised dissenting scientists and used the machinery of government to enhance his reputation and personal interests.

Fauci’s repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment does not legally prove guilt. However, it deprives the American people of answers to questions of enormous public importance. His silence does not resolve the allegations; it magnifies them.

Covid was a disaster, but Fauci did not help -Donald Trump:

The central issue is no longer simply whether mistakes were made during an emergency. It is whether officials entrusted with extraordinary power acted dishonestly, protected themselves and their institutions, and obstructed attempts to uncover the truth. These allegations demand a complete investigation, the release of all relevant records and genuine legal accountability wherever misconduct can be proven.

The Flu Jab Illusion - The annual Theatre of Compliance

Every winter, the same dull propaganda machine lurches back to life.

The posters go up. The pharmacy banners flap in the window. The government slogans return like seasonal mould. Employers begin their polite little pressure campaigns. Media outlets dutifully repeat the script. And the public is told, once again, to roll up its sleeve and call it responsibility. But responsibility to whom? To health? To evidence? To informed consent?

Or to a system that has learned how to convert fear, obedience and medical marketing into public policy?

The annual flu jab is not a fortress. It is not durable immunity. It is not comprehensive winter protection. It is not some sacred act of civic virtue. It is a short-lived, strain-dependent, seasonally reformulated product aimed at a virus that keeps changing. Its performance varies. Its benefits are often modest. Its failures are quietly excused. Its limitations are buried beneath slogans. And it can kill.

And still, every year, the machinery demands reverence.

That is the flu jab illusion.

A limited intervention has been dressed up as a public health commandment. A product with variable effectiveness has been elevated into a moral test. A personal medical decision has been dragged into the theatre of social compliance.

Take it, and you are responsible.

Question it, and you are difficult.

Decline it, and you are selfish.

This is not medicine. This is manipulation.

The public is rarely spoken to like adults. It is not told plainly enough that flu vaccine effectiveness depends on strain matching, age, immune function, timing and the unpredictable behaviour of circulating viruses. It is not told loudly enough that many winter illnesses are not influenza. It is not told honestly enough that vaccinated people can still get sick, still spread respiratory infections, and still end up in hospital.

Instead, it gets bumper-sticker public health.

“Get protected.”

“Do your part.”

“Protect the vulnerable.”

These are not explanations. They are behavioural commands dressed in warm language. They do not invite thought. They do not encourage informed consent. They herd.

And that is the real political genius of the flu jab campaign. It turns a weak and imperfect tool into a loyalty ritual. It allows governments to pretend they have a winter health policy. It allows employers to parade cheap virtue. It allows pharmacies to wrap commerce in the language of care. It allows bureaucrats to count injections and call it prevention.

But dose counts are not health.

Compliance is not immunity.

Marketing is not science.

And a needle is not a national health strategy.

A serious health system would talk about nutrition, sunlight, vitamin D, metabolic disease, obesity, frailty, ventilation, sleep, early treatment, aged-care neglect and the shattered state of population resilience. It would ask why so many people enter winter inflamed, deficient, exhausted, overmedicated and immunologically fragile.

But that would require courage.

It would require honesty.

It would require confronting the deeper failures of modern health policy.

So instead, the bureaucracy reaches for its favourite answer: another campaign, another slogan, another jab, another winter of managed obedience.

The annual flu jab may have a place for some people, particularly those at higher risk, after honest individual advice. But it does not belong on a pedestal. It does not deserve religious treatment. It should not be used as a badge of virtue or a weapon of social pressure.

It is not the foundation of winter health.

It is not a substitute for genuine prevention.

It is not proof that you care.

It is a seasonal product of limited and variable effectiveness that has been politically inflated beyond recognition.

And until we say that plainly, public health will continue doing what it now does best: overselling weak interventions, ignoring root causes, moralising personal choices, and mistaking obedience for health.

The flu jab illusion must end.

Not because every person must refuse it.

But because every person deserves the truth before being pressured to accept it.

The Winter Appointment

Every April, without fail, Eleanor Hayes received a letter reminding her that winter was coming.

The envelope was always reassuring. It spoke of protection, responsibility and peace of mind. At first, she barely gave the decision any thought. She was a schoolteacher, surrounded by coughing children and circulating infections. Her doctor recommended the influenza injection, her employer encouraged it, and the posters in the clinic described it as a simple way to protect herself and others.

So Eleanor rolled up her sleeve.

The first few years passed without incident. She might have felt tired for a day or developed an aching arm, but nothing that seemed important. She accepted these reactions as the price of being sensible.

As she grew older, however, the aftermath began to change.

One year, she developed a fever that lasted several days. The following year, she experienced strange pains in her hands and feet. Her fingers became stiff in the mornings, and a burning sensation travelled along her legs at night. She mentioned it to her doctor, but the symptoms had begun several weeks after her injection, and no connection was considered likely.

“It could be age,” she was told.

Eleanor was only fifty-three.

The next winter, she hesitated. She remembered the exhaustion, the headaches and the peculiar tingling that had never entirely disappeared. But the clinic nurse reassured her that the influenza virus itself could be far more dangerous. No mention of vitamin D.

Eleanor rolled up her sleeve again.

Within days, she felt as though a switch had been thrown inside her body. Her heart raced without warning. Bright light hurt her eyes. Her muscles trembled after the smallest exertion. She began waking at three in the morning drenched in perspiration, her mind alert but her body profoundly weak.

Blood tests showed inflammation, but no one could explain its origin. One specialist suspected an autoimmune disorder. Another thought the symptoms might be hormonal. A third suggested anxiety.

The word anxiety followed Eleanor from appointment to appointment.

She knew her own body. Something had changed.

Her immune system, which had once quietly defended her, now seemed confused and agitated. It reacted to harmless foods, perfumes, medications and changes in temperature. She developed rashes after eating meals she had enjoyed all her life. Her joints swelled. Her thyroid became unstable. Infections that once lasted several days now persisted for weeks.

Still, each autumn, the reminder arrived.

Eleanor began bringing her medical history to appointments. She described the timing of her symptoms and asked whether the annual injections could be contributing to her decline.

The responses were polite but dismissive.

“Temporal association does not prove causation.”

“The benefits outweigh the risks.”

“There is no recognised pattern here.”

No one appeared willing to consider the possibility that Eleanor might be an individual whose immune system responded differently from that of the ‘average’ patient. Medicine spoke in populations, while Eleanor was living inside one particular body.

At fifty-seven, after another winter injection, she collapsed in her kitchen.

She awoke in hospital unable to feel her left foot. Her muscles were weak, her reflexes abnormal, and her blood pressure fluctuated wildly. For several days, doctors investigated possible neurological and autoimmune causes. She received steroids, intravenous fluids and a succession of powerful medications.

She improved enough to return home, but she never returned to her former life.

She resigned from teaching because the noise and fluorescent lights exhausted her. She stopped walking along the beach because her legs could no longer be trusted. Friends invited her to dinners, but she declined because she never knew which foods might produce swelling, palpitations or breathlessness.

Her world gradually contracted to the rooms of her house.

The following autumn, Eleanor refused the reminder.

For the first time in years, she did not roll up her sleeve.

Yet the damage—whatever its cause—had already accumulated. Her immune system remained unstable. She developed recurrent pneumonia, inflammatory heart problems and progressive neurological weakness. One doctor described her condition as a “multisystem disorder of uncertain origin.”

Those words were scientifically honest, but they offered Eleanor little comfort.

She did not want certainty where certainty was impossible. She wanted curiosity. She wanted someone to ask whether each intervention had been right for her, rather than assuming that a recommendation for millions must automatically be safe for every individual.

In her final year, Eleanor began writing down her experience.

She did not call herself an activist. She did not claim that every vaccination was dangerous or that every illness had a single explanation. She simply recorded the sequence of events: the dates, the reactions, the worsening symptoms and the repeated assurances that none of them could be connected.

Her final entry was written in an unsteady hand.

“I was never against medicine,” she wrote. “I was against medicine refusing to listen.”

Eleanor died at sixty-one after a severe respiratory infection overwhelmed her weakened body. Her death certificate listed pneumonia, cardiac complications and autoimmune disease. It did not mention the series of winter appointments that she and her family believed had marked the beginning of her decline.

Perhaps no one could ever prove exactly what had happened.

Perhaps her illness had several causes: genetic vulnerability, environmental exposures, infections, medications and repeated stimulation of an already disturbed immune system. Human biology rarely obeys the simplicity of public-health slogans.

But one truth remained.

Eleanor had reported that something was wrong, and the system had treated her observations as an inconvenience.

After her funeral, her daughter found the unopened vaccination reminder on the hall table. It was addressed to a woman who was no longer alive.

On the front were the familiar words:

Protect yourself this winter.

Her daughter held the letter for a long time.

Then she placed it beside Eleanor’s notebook—the record of a life shortened, a warning disregarded and a patient who had asked not for fear, but for caution; not for ideology, but for individualised care; and not for blind rejection of medicine, but for medicine humble enough to admit that no intervention is without risk, no patient is merely an average, and no suffering person should ever be silenced simply because her experience does not fit the approved narrative. And no person should be coerced into a medication when there is a safer alternative.

I hope it is not too late for Europe.

The speaker, Eva Vlaardingerbroek, addresses a gathering at the European Parliament on the subjects of lawfare, freedom of speech, immigration and the Save Europe Act.

She begins by describing her background as a Dutch political commentator who studied law. She recalls questioning, while at university, whether judges can always separate their personal political beliefs from their professional decisions. According to her account, her professor responded that raising such questions could undermine the legitimacy of the legal system. How I am flabbergasted?

Vlaardingerbroek argues that lawfare - the use of legal proceedings and state institutions to weaken political opponents - is taking place across Europe. Her central contention is that prosecutions for offences such as hate speech, discrimination and incitement are applied disproportionately against patriotic, nationalist and right-wing political figures.

She identifies two groups that she believes are particularly vulnerable to this treatment: pro-life campaigners and people who oppose mass immigration or support remigration. She refers to cases in which people have reportedly been arrested for silently praying near abortion clinics. She also argues that opposition to mass immigration has become one of the most heavily restricted subjects in European political debate.

A major theme of the speech is her belief that mass immigration is changing the demographic and cultural character of Europe. She argues that, unless current policies are reversed, European communities, traditions and national identities will be progressively weakened. She presents remigration as a necessary policy for reversing these developments and protecting the inheritance of future generations.

She refers to recent violent deaths of young Europeans and argues that governments and European institutions are failing to protect their citizens. She warns that the consequences of present immigration policies will become more serious over the next twenty years and asks the audience to consider what kind of Europe their children will inherit.

Vlaardingerbroek then gives examples of what she describes as lawfare and political intimidation. She refers to right-wing commentators and politicians in the Netherlands who have been prosecuted or convicted under laws concerning discrimination or insulting groups.

She also describes her own experiences. She says she was removed from a PhD program because she was considered too politically outspoken, despite other students being permitted to express opposing political views. She says she has been banned from numerous social-media platforms, that police visited her parents to discuss her online conduct, and that she was refused entry to the United Kingdom after criticising Prime Minister Keir Starmer. What was the crime?

She further states that Apple warned her that her telephone had been targeted by mercenary spyware. She explains that the possibility of surveillance has influenced the way she approaches her political commentary, not because she intends to break the law, but because she believes laws and enforcement mechanisms can be interpreted selectively against political dissidents.

Vlaardingerbroek accuses European institutions of presenting themselves as defenders of democracy while restricting legitimate political opposition. She argues that concepts such as “European values” are often defined so vaguely that they can be used to exclude political initiatives that challenge the policies of the European Commission.

She also refers to proposed European measures commonly described as “chat control.” She argues that such systems could allow widespread monitoring of private communications and that surveillance capabilities once reserved for individually targeted operations could become broadly applied.

The final section of the speech concerns the Save Europe Act, which she describes as a European Citizens’ Initiative intended to promote secure borders, oppose mass immigration and support remigration. She says the organisers deliberately used an official European Union democratic mechanism because it is presented as a means through which citizens can bring important issues before the European Commission.

According to Vlaardingerbroek, European authorities have attempted to prevent or reject the initiative’s registration on the grounds that it conflicts with European values. She argues that preventing citizens from registering an initiative - before its merits have even been formally considered - -demonstrates the anti-democratic use of vague legal and administrative standards.

She concludes by calling for public participation in the Save Europe Act. She states that more than half a million people signed the initiative in less than two months and that it must reach at least one million signatures. She asks supporters to encourage their friends and families to sign and describes the initiative as both a legal campaign and a broader movement to preserve Europe’s borders, peoples, cultures and civilisation.

I hope she succeeds.

Australian COVID-19 patients were given morphine and midazolam together in palliative and end-of-life care.

Australian and New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine guidance recommended, for a dying patient with severe dyspnoea or agitation:

• morphine 10 mg plus midazolam 10 mg by subcutaneous syringe driver over 24 hours when regular medication was required; and

• in severe distress, morphine 5 mg plus midazolam 5 mg subcutaneously, repeated every 15 minutes until comfort was achieved.

A South Eastern Sydney Local Health District guideline similarly specified a continuous subcutaneous infusion of morphine 10 mg plus midazolam 10 mg over 24 hours for COVID-19 patients approaching the end of life whose symptoms remained uncontrolled. The document expressly described its purpose as the management of end-of-life symptoms—including hypoxia, dyspnoea, tachypnoea, delirium and agitation—and its approval history dates the original guideline to 2021.

This was not merely theoretical guidance. A published review of 55 COVID-19 patients referred to a Melbourne tertiary hospital’s palliative-care service found that most were referred for end-of-life care; 71% received continuous subcutaneous infusions, most commonly opioids and benzodiazepines. Eighty-one per cent required no more than 20 mg of subcutaneous morphine-equivalent per day, while 64% required no more than 10 mg of midazolam per day.

Why were they combined?

Morphine was principally used to relieve pain, severe breathlessness and the sensation of air hunger. Midazolam was used for anxiety, panic, agitation, delirium or refractory respiratory distress. The combination was therefore intended to relieve different components of severe terminal distress.

The combination is nevertheless clinically potent. Australian product information warns that midazolam used with an opioid can intensify sedation and increase the risk of hypoventilation, apnoea, cardiorespiratory depression, coma or death; doses must be individualised and generally reduced when the drugs are combined.

Consequently, the important conclusion is:

Morphine and midazolam were deliberately prescribed and administered together in Australian hospitals to some COVID-19 patients, particularly those placed on an end-of-life pathway. That fact alone does not establish euthanasia or improper care. Assessing an individual death would require the complete medication chart, doses and timing, syringe-driver records, observations, stated goals of care, consent or substitute-decision-making records, palliative-care assessment, and evidence that potentially reversible causes of respiratory deterioration were considered.

However, I am aware that Australian nurses, relatives and other observers have alleged that some COVID-19 patients received morphine and midazolam despite appearing calm, conscious or not visibly distressed. Those accounts should not be dismissed merely because they have not yet been assembled into a formal national investigation. I have not located a comprehensive Australian audit, coronial finding or judicial determination establishing how frequently this occurred or whether it represented a coordinated practice.

The critical distinction is between prescribing and administering these drugs. The ANZSPM COVID guidance explicitly promoted “anticipatory prescribing”: clinicians could place morphine and midazolam on the medication chart before symptoms developed, once end-of-life goals had been agreed. But it directed clinicians to start with medication as required, and contemplated regular morphine–midazolam infusion when regular dosing became necessary because of severe dyspnoea or agitation.

The NSW hospital guideline is even clearer. It says opioid and benzodiazepine doses should be “proportional to symptom requirements.” The combined continuous infusion of morphine 10 mg and midazolam 10 mg was to be considered when the patient remained symptomatic despite earlier measures. It identifies dyspnoea, tachypnoea, hypoxia with agitation or delirium, and emotional anguish as relevant symptoms, and requires medical and nursing staff to document their actions and conversations.

Therefore:

• A patient having these drugs charted but not administered while comfortable may reflect anticipatory prescribing.

• A patient receiving them for ventilation, a procedure, seizure control, pain or documented agitation may have another legitimate indication.

• But administering morphine and midazolam to a spontaneously breathing patient who had no pain, dyspnoea, tachypnoea, agitation, anxiety, seizure, procedural requirement or other documented indication would not be explained by the cited COVID palliative-care guidance. It would warrant serious clinical and potentially medico-legal scrutiny.

This matters because midazolam and opioids have additive-synergistic respiratory-depressant effects. Australian prescribing information warns that their combination can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma and death, and says that the lowest effective doses should be used with close observation. That warning does not prove that any particular death was caused or hastened by the medicines, but it makes undocumented or unjustified administration a grave matter.

We need to establish what happened!

Nurses’ contemporaneous evidence would be important, particularly when supported by:

• medication administration records—not merely prescription charts;

• doses, routes, frequency and commencement times;

• respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and oxygen requirement immediately before each dose;

• pain, agitation, sedation and consciousness assessments;

• syringe-driver records and subsequent dose escalations;

• progress notes documenting the claimed refractory symptom;

• palliative-care referrals and goals-of-care decisions;

• communications with the patient or family;

• whether active treatment was withdrawn before medication commenced;

• the interval between commencement and loss of consciousness or death.

A repeated pattern—comfortable patients placed on an end-of-life pathway, commencement of both medicines without documented refractory symptoms, rapid loss of consciousness, and inadequate consultation-would be profoundly concerning. It would justify an independent, clinician-led forensic audit of medication charts and deaths, with legal protection for nurses who give evidence.

I recognise that these allegations exist and that nurses may have witnessed matters not captured in published studies. What I cannot responsibly do without the individual records is declare every such administration unlawful or causative of death. But neither should the testimony be waved away under the general label of “palliative care.” The records should be examined.

And the above would have not been necessary had vitamin D, vitamin C & Zinc been used as prevention and early intervention of hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin been used.
