Last night I was talking with a young woman—Gen Z, maybe on the edge of Gen Y—and she said something that made me laugh at first.

She basically told me:

“The boys today need to learn how to be men from men like you.”

I laughed and said, “Awe shucks!”

But I knew what she meant.

She wasn’t talking about being macho. She wasn’t saying young guys need to walk around looking for fights, pounding their chests and trying to prove how tough they are.

Quite the opposite.

She was talking about confidence. Discipline. Knowing how to carry yourself. Looking somebody in the eye. Standing up for yourself without needing to tear somebody else down.

Knowing how to protect yourself—and knowing when not to fight.

Knowing how to lose.

Knowing how to get hit.

And knowing how to get back up.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized those are exactly the things martial arts gave me.

I Learned a Lot of My Life Lessons in the Ring

For those who only know me these days as an actor, filmmaker or author, martial arts was a huge part of my life long before any of that.

I was a professional kickboxer. I became a champion and eventually fought my way to being a highly ranked contender.

I’ve spent decades around fighters, trainers, gyms, movie sets and some incredibly tough human beings.

Then acting became another major chapter of my life. I’ve appeared in films including Death Match, Expert Weapon, American Street Fighter, Final Round, Ring of Fire 2 and Kickboxer 3, along with television work including Days of Our Lives and Just Shoot Me.

And these days I’m back working regularly as an actor in Los Angeles.

But something interesting has happened.

Between acting jobs, I’ve started teaching again.

And I’m remembering how much I love it.

Kickboxing Isn’t Really About Fighting

Anybody can get angry.

Anybody can throw a wild punch.

Real training teaches you something completely different.

It teaches you to stay relaxed when everything in your body wants to tense up.

It teaches you to breathe when you’re exhausted.

It teaches you that getting knocked down isn’t particularly interesting.

What you do next is.

And there’s an incredible confidence that comes from knowing you can defend yourself.

Ironically, some of the toughest fighters I’ve ever known had the least need to prove it.

That’s the kind of masculinity I think that young woman was talking about.

Not aggression.

Strength under control.

And women need those lessons too. I’ve trained women who wanted confidence, conditioning, self-defense or simply a workout that didn’t bore the living hell out of them.

You don’t have to want to become a fighter to train like one.

So I’m Opening Up a Few Training Slots in Los Angeles

I’m still a working actor—that’s where a lot of my energy is going these days—but my schedule leaves me some openings, and I’ve decided to take on a limited number of students.

I’m available in the Los Angeles area for private training in kickboxing, boxing-style conditioning, fitness/personal training, and practical coaching around diet and healthier lifestyle habits.

You can be 20 and want somebody to teach you how to throw your first proper punch.

You can be 50 and realize you want your body back.

You can be an actor who needs to look convincing throwing punches on camera.

You can be a woman who wants to feel stronger and more confident walking through the world.

Or maybe you’re somebody who doesn’t give a damn about fighting—you just want a workout that challenges your body and your mind.

You don’t have to be in shape before you call me.

That’s what training is for.

I’ve been the fighter in phenomenal condition.

I’ve also lived long enough to understand what it’s like when life gets in the way and you have to fight your way back toward the person you remember being.

Maybe that’s actually made me a better teacher.

Because I’m not interested in screaming at somebody because they can’t keep up.

I’m interested in finding out where you are—and seeing how far we can take you from there.

Maybe Gen X Still Has Something to Pass Down

That conversation last night stayed with me.

Every generation complains about the generation coming behind it. That’s nothing new.

I don’t want to do that.

I’d rather teach them something.

Maybe those of us who’ve been around awhile have an obligation to pass along what worked.

Discipline.

Resilience.

Physical confidence.

Respect.

A strong handshake.

The ability to defend yourself.

The humility to know you don’t always have to.

And perhaps most importantly:

When life knocks you on your ass, get back up.

They come to the people who stick around long enough.

That’s it.

There’s no secret handshake. No perfect timing. No guarantee.

Just persistence.

You keep training.
You keep showing up.
You keep saying yes to the next opportunity—even when the last one didn’t go how you wanted.

And then one day… it stacks.

A fight scene in the morning.
A moment with greatness at night.

Not because you got lucky…

But because you didn’t leave early.

That’s also why I started writing “Ianisms” and sharing thoughts online. Over time people started sending messages saying those short pieces helped them through a rough day. That meant a lot to me, because at the end of the day we’re all trying to keep moving forward, even when life gets difficult.

I remember in the 90’s becoming great friends with a guy from Germany. I asked him about Hitler, and he said Ian... how do you think one man made a whole country go against a whole race of people? He said he didn’t have to. They were already against them due to the leaders of the J*ws’ actions. Caveate: Talking about leaders here, not citizens.
