In Season 5 Episode 8 of the Idea Vault Podcast, we interviewed a familiar face here at the IDEA Bank. Some people wear many hats, but for Bethany Grimes, they all have one thing in common: serving others. As President of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, she’s the face of the Chamber, championing local businesses through ribbon cuttings, Lunch & Learns, networking events, and innovative programs that strengthen the community. But when the workday ends, another full-time job begins as a mom of five. In this episode, Bethany shares what it’s really like balancing two 24/7 callings while leading with purpose everywhere she goes.

We also dive into the personal journey that brought her here, from finding love after the loss of her husband, to moving back home, trusting God’s plan, and discovering how the puzzle pieces of a small town often fit together in unexpected ways. Bethany shares how she knows everyone you meet is carrying something you can’t see and how showing up with a smile and leading with kindness can change someone’s day. Her story is a reminder that purpose isn’t just found in the big moments, it’s found in the way you serve others, every single day.

⛱️“JUST START” Youth Entrepreneurship Academy

The week gave middle and high school students an immersive introduction to entrepreneurship through four days of hands-on learning, mentorship, and real-world experiences. Students participated in branding and pricing workshops, public speaking and professionalism sessions, learned from local entrepreneurs and business leaders, toured the Wiregrass Innovation Center, explored Troy University's campus, and developed the confidence to pitch their own ideas. Throughout the week, they built creativity, leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills while discovering what it means to think like an entrepreneur.

Do you have a child in Middle or High School interested in Troy University or entrepreneurship?

This summer program will take place July 22–25, 2026 on campus and at the IDEA Bank and is open to students entering 6th-12th grade. The program is designed to introduce students to entrepreneurship through hands-on learning, real-world application, and guided development of their own business ideas.

The program will conclude with a Pitch Competition on July 25, where students will present to a panel of judges. The grand prize winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship to Troy University, and the event will be open for family and community attendance. Students will also enjoy field trips throughout the program, including guided tours of Troy University’s Campus and the Wiregrass Innovation Center in Dothan, AL.

Additional Details:
• Daily sessions run from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (meals included)
• Overnight housing is available for students ages 15+
• Registration is $50 (commuter) or $100 (housing included)

HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY STUDENT-MADE TROY🥳

Student-Made Troy Store celebrated 1 year of open doors. In the first inaugural year the program has featured 43 creators and generated over $14,000 in student profit.

The creators celebrated with a sidewalk sale Downtown at the Fall Market with student products, a sweet treat 🎂, and a raffle!

We can’t wait for another year of student businesses. Here’s to year 2!

The Business Idea Competition is in Full Swing

All applications have been submitted and closed, Session 1 is complete, now on to Session 2! Every application we received is filled with potential, making the start of this years competition exciting yet anticipating!

The journey from initial concept ideas to pitch day is going to be filled with growth and change. So, keep your eyes peeled for Pitch Day on December 3rd, 2025, and watch as these students transform their ideas.

Episode 2 is so Impactful it’s SCARY!

In the latest episode of The Idea Vault Podcast, “Small Pond, Big Impact,” we dive into the journeys of two exceptional Troy University past and present students students, who leveraged their involvement with Student-Made Troy organization into significant corporate opportunities. Izzy Stokes, who you met above ⬆️⬆️, the current Website Manager for Student-Made Troy is also a Website Assistant for 10 other schools. She shares her insights on balancing a demanding role managing 1,000 products, along with her full-time student responsibilities—all while making a huge impact.

We also feature Maddie Reed, former Student-Made Troy Campus Manager, who discusses how her initial internship led to a full-time position with Student-Made headquarters as a Program Manager overseeing manager teams from 10 other schools. Maddie highlights the invaluable networking and connections she made, emphasizing that while burnout is inevitable, readjusting and persevering is key.

This episode is a testament to how small roles in the right organizations can open doors to a future shaped by experience, engagement, and strategic networking.

Innovate Alabama and IDEA Bank reflect on entrepreneurial expansions

In partnership with Innovate Alabama, we recently hosted a showcase of new investments helping students and small businesses drive innovation in Southeast Alabama. The event highlighted how statewide resources are fueling entrepreneurship beyond Alabama’s major cities and creating opportunities for long-term economic growth. Since 2024, the IDEA Bank has fueled 66 businesses, awarded $17,000 in pitch funding to six local innovators and generated $14,000 in revenue through student-run ventures. The showcase featured presentations from students and IDEA Bank members, tours of upgraded facilities and stories of how the program has become a launchpad for new businesses in Pike County.

Art and Design & IDEA Bank Alumni Rebrand Downtown Troy

Studio 207, a multi-media design company owned by four TROY Art and Design & IDEA Bank graduates, has rebranded Downtown Troy to include redesigned logos, updated colors, and a refreshed social media presence!

Founded and based in Troy, AL, Studio 207 is owned by recent TROY graduates Reanna Thompson (ME!!!), Jared Hester, Howard Purvee, and Nathan Hobbs.

“It’s incredible to see our graduates making such an impact in the community; their success is our success, this is why I teach,” said Chris Stagl, Associate Professor of Design.

Taste of Troy is back! This annual event organized by Troy University and the City of Troy introduces local businesses to Troy University students. Local Success and Opportunity

THAT’S A WRAP! The Idea Empowerment Series wrapped up just over a month ago, and awarded Jonas Shaw the $10,000 grand prize for the best idea in Pike County. His project, titled “Empowering Small Businesses with Strategic Media for Sustainable Growth” will provide advertising materials to five small businesses in our county.

Student finalist Madalyn Johnson was also awarded the Ignite Impact Prize and a $500 scholarship from the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, which recognized the potential social impact of her project, “The Future of Fabrication: A Community Maker Space”.

The IDEA Bank staff, judges, sponsors, and supportive community members have enjoyed watching these finalists grow and we look forward to seeing how they better Pike County. Thank you to our sponsors and everyone who was involved in this competition!

Congratulations to a team of Cognera Health, the former Troy University students who recently took home the top prize winning $100,000 in the Alabama Launchpad Life Sciences Track. After winning the IDEA Bank’s Fall 2024 Business Idea Competition, they developed Cognera Health, an AI platform improving mental health care access.

This funding will speed up their product launch and pilot programs. Alabama Launchpad supports early-stage startups driving innovation and growth in Alabama.

Launched in April 2025, the Innovate Alabama Talent Pilot Program is a new grant initiative designed to support innovative, for-profit programs that strengthen Alabama’s talent pipeline—especially those focused on work-based learning and rural impact. With up to $350,000 in funding available per recipient, this program aims to identify demonstratable and scalabale solutions to workforce and talent development in the state of Alabama.

In April, we concluded our 3rd Annual Marketing Competition by awarding an advertising bundle valued at over $2,000 to this year’s winner: Gabby Jent. Gabby is a senior at Troy University from Jasper, Alabama, and the owner of Gabby J. Photography—a business dedicated to capturing life’s moments.

Creators from Student-Made Troy took part in this year’s TroyFest Arts & Crafts Festival in Downtown Troy on April 26th–27th. IDEA Bank Named Finalist for National Entrepreneurship Education Award

We are thrilled to announce that the Troy University IDEA Bank has been recognized as a finalist for the USASBE Excellence in Co-Curricular Innovation Award. This prestigious award, presented by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE), honors innovative co-curricular programs that make a significant impact on entrepreneurship education.

Our Director, Lynne George, represented Troy University and the IDEA Bank at the USASBE 2025 Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada this past weekend where she participated in a finalist panel and presented two ongoing IDEA Bank programs.
