Something struck me, a few weeks ago when I was walking along Merricks Beach with my dog*. Wandering along the mostly empty, winter shoreline, I kept marvelling at all the beautiful clumps of seaweed, shells, driftwood and other treasures on the sand and it dawned on me.

These beautiful offerings were gifts from the sea, washed up on the sand for our enjoyment. Intricate collections of delicate beauty, more precious than anything a florist or jeweller could ever dream up. Treasures from a hidden, underwater world which we can’t even fathom with our land-dwelling brains.

It’s been something I’ve been unable to shake ever since. Now, every time I take my dog to the beach, I look out for today’s gifts. And I smile.

Today, I want to share some of these with you. And invite you to ponder how so often, the things we artists create, are merely reflections of what we see in the natural world. Why our ideals of beauty are so closely aligned with the things that natural occur in the organic world.

It’s no accident.

Mother nature is the greatest artist of all time. We find her beautiful because it’s where we belong.

This week, I’d like to invite you to see if you can find any of your own gifts from the sea - or the sky, the river, the earth... And share them with me.

Oh. Some sad news. As indicated by my use of the word “dog” rather than plural. I haven’t felt ready to talk about it until now, but today is international dog day (apparently) and it seems fitting.

At the start of July, we farewelled our beautiful, old German Shepherd girl, Meredith. Twelve years of friendship, gone so suddenly. It was heartbreaking - we had no idea she was sick, but turns out she’d been hiding spleen cancer from us. It was all over within hours.

As hard as it was, it was a blessing that she didn’t suffer as so many old dogs tend to do. She was her usual happy, perky self until the end.

I know everyone thinks this and I’m no different - she truly was the best dog ever. And I’m so grateful to have had her in my life for so long.

Thankyou Mezzie. We’ll miss you always. xx

First up, I’m sorry - I know I was meant to do an online sound bath on Tuesday night, but when I woke up on that morning and asked myself if I had it in me, the resounding response was NO.

I’m sorry guys. I put everything I had into performing at and running the Red Hill Warm Mids (mini) Afternoon gig on Sunday and I needed a night off. I did what I always tell you guys to do - I honoured rest.

Meanwhile? Here’s some moments from what was a truly (and I mean it) magical afternoon in a little hall in the bush. Ps. Rather than doing bird stuff in the subject line every week, I’m now extending it to other beautiful things I’ve noticed in the natural world this week.

It struck me last week that despite always putting a recent bird encounter as my subject line, I’ve never actually shared a photo or any kind of evidence. Until now.

The Bronzewing is a native pigeon and they are hands down, one of my favourite birds to hear. They make this gorgeous, cooing sound which instantly calms and grounds me. The best bit is, they’re often found in pairs, calling to one another.

My fav bird photographer, Leila Jeffreys has a gorgeous shot of one.

The sound of the Bronzewing is also immortalized in this song on Awake Within the Dream (Sound Meditations vol. 1).

Last Friday, I was out for a walk along a creek near my daughter’s school, and I heard two Bronzewings hiding in the undergrowth, calling to each other from different sides of a path. This is a pretty common sound, but there was something special about these two birds. The amazing thing was, that they were singing to one another at almost the same, but not quite the same frequency. It almost resulted in a binaural beat (where two tones less than 35hz difference, creating a beat or wobble between them which directly impacts your brainwaves).

Thankfully, I had my phone and could record it. See if you can hear them amidst the human-made morning sounds. The binaural effect is particularly evident around the 13sec mark”.

Nature is infinitely healing, my friends.

I mean, here’s an example of something that millions of people worldwide are probably listening to on YouTube right now, to help them achieve the desired brainwave state - but in the wild.

Another amazing instance of this kind of thing is the fact that the optimum brainwave state for healing is around 7.8hz - which also happens to be the earth’s natural frequency or Schumann Resonance. In other words, if you tune into the frequency of the earth, your mind will settle. Wild. But also, makes so much sense…

So yeah, it’s that simple. Go outside, and listen to the sounds of the natural world and you’ll feel better. And you don’t need to go to the countryside - even in the busiest city, you’ll hear a bird. You just gotta listen out for it.

Time for another “meet someone I like heaps and want you to know about too”. And this one is someone very close to home - someone I get to play gigs with on the reg. He’s unreal.

Three years in the making, my second album of sound meditations (a follow up to “awake within the dream”) is coming. in all her forms (sound meditations vol. 2) will be released on Constellation Tatsu on 6 October. I met Karl a few years back when he reached out to me to ask whether I’d ever be keen to play gigs with him. I already knew his stuff and was a big fan - and the timing was perfect! I was booking my ‘abundance’ tour and wanted a support. In stepped Karl. So we went from being total strangers to playing a bunch of shows with each other over summer 2024.

Karl is ace. He’s one of those totally unflappable guys, who I swear, never gets even remotely frustrated. He’s so chill. And it shows in his music. I swear, whenever I hear his stuff, my entire being begins to melt. So much so, this album took over from Eno’s Thursday Afternoon as our fav soundtrack for yin yoga sessions at home. (Yoga teachers? Take note. Put this on and watch your class disappear into a puddle. Seriously).

Anyway, enough of my jibber-jabber, let’s find out some more about this legend human.

Share a book that you’ve read recently (or not so recently) and why you loved it.

Brian Eno - On Some Far Away Beach - I love biographies, especially biographies about musicians. I’m a huge fan of Eno and this book became a study and reference book more than anything. Every few pages I’m diving out of the book and into the music that Eno has collaborated, produced, written and played on with so many different artists and personas throughout his career. Inspiring!

What’s your go-to recipe at the moment?

Bocadillo de Calamares (Calamari Baguette with Alioli)

Cut your calamari in rings, coat them in semolina and egg (use buckwheat for gluten free), fry until tender.

Alioli - in a bowl add three fingers of olive oil approximately

1 egg

1 clove of garlic or 2 for extra spice

Blend with an electric hand blender, slowly blending the mix to a yoghurt consistency add a bit of salt and a dash of lemon juice

Find the crunchiest baguette you can find,

Add the calamari, a squeeze of lemon and be generous with the alioli.

Yum! Enjoy!

Favourite album or mix, to play at home on a Sunday morning OR when you’re cooking dinner.

My favourite album(s) at the moment are “Harmonia - Musik von Harmonia”. I’m going through a big Kosmische Musik phase from the 70’s at the moment and I love that motorik beat. I really like the track ‘Dino’ on this album, a great dinner making track or Sunday morning groove either way.

“Love as Restraint” by Crystalline Reflections aka Singing Sorrows, Desolate Horizons is a delicate and highly emotive album. The music ebbs and flows between beauty and grief. Highly recommended for a Sunday slumber.

A photo of the last time you were awestruck by somewhere, or something in the natural world.

I’m an avid fly fisher and have enjoyed exploring rivers in the Goulburn River and Lake Eildon regions in Victoria of late. I love to work my way up a new river, not knowing what’s around the next bend, to me the beauty of meandering water surrounded by lush forest is awe inspiring and certainly inspires the narratives in my music making.

Go outside and record the birds (or insects, frogs, rustling leaves - anything from the natural world) on your phone for 30 seconds.

This is one of many places we walk Luna, our short haired border collie, along the Merri creek with the sounds of the running water, birds, trees and the odd bicycle bell as they zip past. It’s a pleasant walk.

You know that hollow, empty feeling you get as you eat airport food? Not airplane food, (that’s a whole different thing) - but airport food. The stuff you buy when you’re in that no-man’s land between security and boarding.

It looks like food, but it isn’t. Not really.

You chew, you swallow - but at the end of it all, you feel empty. Your brain doesn’t register that it’s food.

You see, Airport cuisine is missing the key ingredient in any real food.

Love.

That’s why your mum’s bolognese is always the best. Or your grandma’s cookies. Or that Dhal from the Indian takeout down the road that’s been there since 1982? That’s why it nourishes your soul so much, you feel it tingling in your toes.

AI Music feels the same for me.

Yes. We’re going there.

Last week, the news was covered in the fact that the top song on commercial radio was produced by AI. A cover of Madonna’s classic “Like a Prayer”.

I listened to it once, and I felt nothing. Unlike the original, which gives me all the feels when I hear it, I knew I was listening to something but it didn’t feel like music to me. There was no reaction - good or bad. No joy. No “yuck”. Just nothing.

AI music feels empty. Hollow. It passes through without hitting any kind of nerve. I listen to it, but just like airport food that doesn’t taste like food, AI music doesn’t feel like music either. It’s just sound and vibration.

Because AI music contains no love. It contains no pain. No joy. And no sadness. No humanness.

And isn’t that what art is all about in the first place? Isn’t that what we as artists are trying to achieve with every single song we write, or painting we make?

So last month, The Atlantic released information on the millions of songs stolen, to train AI datasets. Lo and behold, 11 of the songs I’ve written in collaboration with anthène and Antarctic Wastelands were on it. 11 songs, licensed without my permission, to feed this ever-growing beast that none of us asked for.

These songs are songs of joy. Songs of pain. Songs written by human beings about the very human feelings that we experience, every single moment of every single day.

Like ‘Remission’, which I wrote and recorded moments after I had a call from my mum to tell me that her cancer was in remission.

Or ‘Lungs’, which I tentatively sang - my first attempt at vocalizing after my poor body was ravaged by weeks of covid symptoms.

These songs, like every single one of my songs are about human emotions. Human experiences. Music made by a human for other humans.

Because that’s what it’s all about, right?

Music (and indeed, all art) gives the writer the opportunity to express and process their big emotions using music as the outlet. And in turn, the audience gets to experience and feel these emotions and if they land, they feel seen. Understood. We feel connected.

How can a machine possibly do what (human) artists do? How can they process human experiences and emotions - pain, joy, fear, and the myriad other emotional colours - into a piece of artwork which reflects back on the viewer or listener?

They can’t. And they never will. It’s that simple.

Why? Leonard Cohen said it best.

“There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in”

AI music is devoid of feeling. It has no emotion, no character and no cracks. No light. No human-ness.

So what do we, as artists, do?

Simple. We level up our humanness. And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing.

I used to be obsessed with editing out all the imperfections in a song. Making them as “perfect” as I could. But not anymore. My two expansions albums were testament to this. There’s so many “mistakes” in them, it’s wild. But those things are what I love about the albums the most.

Instead of trying to make everything pristine, I now embrace imperfection. I embrace emotion. I leave in these little things that I once saw as flaws and now understand, make my music feel as though it was made by a human.

I leave in the cracks and I let the light come in.

I let the love come in.

So fellow artists, go forth and be as human as you possibly can be. Leave in the flaws. Embrace emotional expression above all else. If not for your audiences, but just for yourself. Because this is how we connect - through our shared human experience. Through our flaws. Through our beautiful, untouchable humanity. Through the cracks. Through love.

It’s our superpower. Embrace it.

Ps. blown away that this real, human being chose to open his special “Australian Ambient” DJ set with my song, coober pedy (pink dream) from expansion b (north). I recorded the pristine field recording of galahs and kestrels at dawn, exactly a year ago and recorded the guitars and synths in our caravan. So grateful to know that it hit one of music’s top curators in the feels too.

Nothing can compare with the pure presence, and intention of setting up a photo, knowing that you won’t see the finished result for weeks. Maybe months (if, like me, you tend to take several trips’ worth of photos per film).

Even the mere idea that each photo costs around $2.50AUD (film and developing costs) adds a layer of intention. And then, there’s the paper and chemicals involved, which then adds an environmental impact layer (although firing off 83 shots of the same group photo on your device, to then be housed on a massive server - that has it’s own unique environmental cost).

I’ve just finished sorting through the field recordings I took on Lord Howe Island back in April - a pristine beyond words paradise in the middle of the pacific, where there’s no evidence of human visitation or habitation pre-1788. Birds, fish, Galapagos sharks and insects were the only things living there.

On LHI, there’s not much to do - unless you like hiking, snorkelling, birdwatching, eating the freshest Kingfish and Avocados you’ve ever tasted, and seeing the plants that you keep hostage in your house, in their natural habitat (the Kentia Palm is endemic to the island).

It was perfection.

Ok so before we dive into this month’s chat with a mate who I think is unreal (and has some gems to share), put Sunday 16 August in your diary, as I will be filling the Red Hill Mechanics Hall, in Red Hill (duh) with my ambient bangers, made insanely lush thanks to the vocals and spoken words of Matt Wicking, and synthy goodness of Paul Raine. Then I’ll join in on some of their stunning music. 90min of continuous explorations, set in a magical little hall in the forest. Hope you can be there. I am so, so excited to introduce you to the absolutely bonkers-brilliant ceramic and mixed media artist Emily Counts. As you can see above, her creations are wild. They make me literally feel all of the feels, all at once. I’m sure she’s some kind of pixie or mythical being - there’s no way a mere human can make stuff this good.

So, I met Emily through her husband Josh (aka Party Store) - we made an album together a few years back, and Emily very kindly made the artwork for us, combining photos we’d both taken of natural wonders near our respective homes in Northwest Washington and Southeast Australia. Hence the album title.

From the moment I saw this image, I knew I had to find out more about her. When I saw her ceramics, my head exploded. Emily’s art has this impossibly-hard-to-get-right combination of childlike wonder, beauty, magic but with a pinch of darkness too. It honestly makes me feel all of the feels at once. She is remarkable.

I was lucky enough to hang out with her and Josh in LA when I was visiting in April, and we spent a day exploring galleries, sampling ice cream and comparing US/AUS vernacular together. They both rule.

Share a book that you’ve read recently (or not so recently) and why you loved it. I’ll share a couple books that I have not quite finished yet. I often don’t finish books, or it takes a long time to finish them because I get unreasonably sad about things ending. But I am still planning to finish reading these two that are on my nightstand currently :-)…The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin (1974) and Borne, by Jeff Vandermeer (2017).

These are both science fiction novels by two excellent writers. I find that the intricate world building within science fiction books relates to my art practice as well as the way that I dream. Being immersed in these imagined worlds is nourishment for my art. I’m not taking direct inspiration from the described imagery, but the richness and thoroughness of these other realities is like an energetic tea to steep inside of.

What’s your go-to recipe at the moment?

Lately I have been making a lot of hearty grain salads. This isn’t exactly a recipe because I don’t write down quantities and I just eyeball things and add ingredients to taste. But this is roughly how I would make a kale grain salad:

Cook farro (al dente) or quinoa for a base grain, 1 to 1.5 cups of dried grains before cooking.

Chop up a bunch of raw lacinato kale.

Wash your hands and squeeze the kale in fistfuls to break down the cells, making it more tender and accepting of dressing.

Coarsely chop a good handful of roasted almonds

Add any fun amount of either chopped apples or dried cranberries, or both.

Add crumbled goat cheese or feta, whatever amount looks tasty.

You could add a handful of finely chopped chives to the salad.

For dressing I mix olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper, all to taste.

Mix it all up, that’s lunch!

A photo of the last time you were awestruck by somewhere, or something in the natural world.

I am usually drawn to the small objects and details in nature. While on a hike on the Olympic Peninsula I took this photo of fungi growing on a fallen branch. These are known as alpine jelly cone or poor man’s gumdrop. I think they look like little squishy sacks of sunshine.

This was recorded at the lake park down the street from my house. You can hear birds in the background, children playing, and a little bit of the sound of cars. The best and most prominent sound is the voice of a bullfrog at the very end of the clip with a quieter responding bullfrog voice immediately after. I read that the American bullfrog is considered an invasive species here in Washington, a Prohibited Aquatic Animal Species. But their call is really bold and beautiful, I do enjoy the sound.

Last week, I exhibited at the Contemporary Art Now art fair in Ibiza, Spain. I was showing there with the wonderful gallery HAGD Contemporary that represents my work in Scandinavia, and alongside two other artists I admire- Nicklas Johannes and Manuel Garcia!

And other fun news...this summer I will start working on my first solo museum exhibition, to open next spring at the Tacoma Art Museum in Washington state, US. I started having intense and beautiful visions for this show last year and I’m excited to begin creating it. Also this summer I’m working on: relaxing, hiking, camping, house projects, ice cream sampling.

I can’t remember the exact year that I packed up my beloved CD collection and shipped it down to our family’s farm. Maybe 2005ish? I’m sure my husband remembers and is currently saying it out loud. He has a freakish talent for remembering facts such as this - that, and 80s/90s tv commercial jingles. It’s a real skill.

Anyway, I’m sure every one of us aged over 35 did it. You might have been toying with iTunes and iPods, flipping between digital and physical music consumption. But after a while (probs moving house a few times), decided to free up a shelf (or seven) and get rid of the clutter. Donate your hard-won CD collection to an Op Shop. Sorry if this is triggering. I feel you.

Then, in 2008ish, everything went to shit. Those of us hanging onto our CDs definitely reliquished them when Spotify launched. And why wouldn’t we? A service which would stream all of the music, all of the time - this seemed too good to be true!

Suddenly all those shelves of discs collecting dust seemed so redundant - why devote so much physical space in your home to something you could get (practically) free, online?

I totally drank that Kool-Aid. No question. I was like a kid in a candy store. Off chops on all the music, all of the time. No pauses. No gaps. A steady stream of earworms, rarities and all that stuff you never knew you wanted.

I’d always kept a small collection of records on the side - I saw vinyl as a fun party favour. Usually around the wee hours of the morning at a house party, when busting out a particular record would see the whole house errupt. You know the one I mean…

Please be upstanding for the greatest mullet (and one of the greatest voices) to ever come out of Oz.

But my CDs languished in boxes on a farm. Forgotten.

Until a few years back when we sold the property. Rather than donate the CDs, we welcomed them back into our home. A special bookshelf in my studio housed them. This collection of thousands of dollars spent during my teenage to mid 20s years - ranging from rainforest sounds to Tchaikovsky symphonies (the GOAT); Miles Davis to Nirvana, Ani di Franco to a massive selection of Global Underground Compilations (this one will never ever get old)

Little by little, I began to rediscover the joy of CDs. Sure, I could find these all on Spotify or Apple Music or as above, Youtube - but recently I’ve discovered why physical music has the edge over digital - and always will.

The whole physical engagement with music is one thing. Having to think about it; choose what you’re going to listen to, and then open the case, put it in the player, press play. It’s a nice process.

When the wifi is screwy, having music to play is definitely a bonus too.

And not using your device to play music - as someone said to me the other day, ‘when you use your phone to play music, you end up seeing something else like a text or notification, and your focus is pulled’.

Word.

I have a visceral reaction to playing digital music on weekend mornings now. I legit can’t do it.

But for me, the real beauty about playing a CD is what’s not there.

The silence. The pause.

Ok so at the end of the CD, what happens? It stops. Silence. A moment to stop, digest what you’ve just heard, and decide where to go next. You get the chance to ask yourself:

What music do I feel like listening to next?

or, I loved that so much, I’m gonna just hit play and start it all over again.

The choice is yours.

It’s even more so with a cassette. You not only get a pause at the end of the album but also in the middle; a brief respite as you hear the tape machine click and turn onto side B.

As for vinyl? You have to go and turn the thing over! You actually have to physically engage with the music to keep it going.

Not so with streaming services. There’s no pause. Ever.

The album finishes, and the algorithm cues up more music. It goes on and on. Neverending. No time to pause and consider where you would like to go. No choice.

Maybe you’re done with three hours of Khruangbin-esque music (nb: I adore K-bin and am very guilty of this exact thing), and if you had the choice, would put on some 90s hip hop instead? Or some jazz? Something that reflects your mood in this very moment.

But you don’t have this opportunity, because there’s no silence. No pause.

The pause is everything. It’s where our freedom lives. It’s where we have the chance to hear our inner voice, suggesting where to go next, rather than be told by an algorithm what we want.

We live in a society that is speeding up, faster and faster. Everything rushes past, no chance to stop and actually digest things. It’s exhausting. So pauses here and there. Silence. These things matter. We need them. It’s also why I always allow silence at the end of a sound bath - for this exact purpose.

Maybe a CD or vinyl collection isn’t on your 2026 bingo card and I get that - but maybe consider using Bandcamp or if you must stream, turn off the auto play option and don’t use their neverending playlists. See how much choice you can rein back in for yourself. It may seem like a small thing but I promise, changing your music consumption habits will trickle through to other areas of your life.

And if you were lucky enough to keep them, go dig out your cds. Dust them off and put them on. Relive some magic from years gone by.

And when the cd ends, be like Depeche Mode

Time for another “meet someone I like heaps and want you to know about too”. One of the nicest (and most prolific - seriously, he’s unstoppable in his output) guys in ambient music. So pour yourself a cuppa (for the non Aussies - this means a cup of Tea/coffee) and kick back.

Back in 2022, Sam from the excellent label, Ambientologist reached out to ask if I’d be keen to do a track for a compilation where he match-made me with another producer to make a new track. As luck would have it, he paired me up with someone who I was a massive fan of. anthène (aka Brad Deschamps).

I’ve always turned to Brad’s music in the morning. And for my evening, yin yoga sessions at home. Listening to his music makes me feel like I’m being hugged and want to cry and smile all at the same time. It’s magic. And I am so grateful to have made several things with him over the years.

Anyway, it seemed high time we chatted about what he’s been up to and what things he’s digging. So here we go.

Share a book that you’ve read recently (or not so recently) and why you loved it

I’ve recently gotten back into reading graphic novels, particularly ones that are autobiographical. Been enjoying a few books by Luke Healy (“Americana” and “Self-Esteem and the End of The World”) as well as Kate Beaton’s “Ducks”. It’s such beautifully written and drawn book about her experience working in the oil sands in Alberta, Canada. It touches on her personal challenges as well as the environmental impact of humanity’s reliance on oil. Highly recommended.

What’s your go-to recipe at the moment? 

I’m going to go with my go to vegan pancake recipe. Delicious every time, add some banana and chocolate chips and it’s perfect. I have a sweet tooth, as does my daughter, and this is a pretty common snack in our household. Sometimes vegan sweets and baked goods don’t turn out great, but this works!

Favourite album or mix, to play at home on a Sunday morning or when you’re cooking dinner.

I’m going to cheat and choose two albums that I’ve been playing a lot at home on a Sunday morning. The whole family has been enjoying these, music I can put on and everyone is happy to hear. First is Bill Callahan’s “My Days of 58”, this came out this year and is one of his best, “The Man I’m Supposed to Be” in particular is just an incredible song.

Second is Teenage Fanclub’s “Howdy”, which is one of their albums that took a bit to fully connect with me, but the songwriting is just brilliant. “Dumb Dumb Dumb” and “The Town and the City” are up there with my favourite Teenage Fanclub songs. One of the best bands ever.

This is actually the inspiration for the cover of an album on Dronarivm coming out this month. I took this photo out of the window of my office in downtown Toronto of a hawk just taking a moment to rest. I love images like this, where nature and our human made environments meet.

Go outside and record the birds (or insects, frogs, rustling leaves - anything from the natural world) on your phone for 30 seconds

This is a recording of the rain on a spring day in the alleyway behind my house. I’m actually going to use some of this in a piece I’m working on.

Last night’s free online sound bath streaming here until the next one, on 24 June x

As Autumn draws to a close in the southern hemisphere, and winter looms on the horizon, I’m feeling the darkness and quietude. And it’s lovely.

I used to fight the onset of winter, distract myself by travelling to Europe every couple of years to escape midwinter. Last year, I tried to escape it completely.

But alas our winter here in SE Australia doesn’t last three months anymore. It lasts five if we’re lucky. So returning from four months on the road last year to the supposed last month of winter? It wasn’t. I landed in the middle of the worst part of winter. The coldest. And it kept going til December. And it hit me. Hard.

I worked out why. It’s because I didn’t have the gradual shift. The gradual slowing. The gradual darkening.

This is what the seasons do. If we allow them to.

This year, I’m sinking into it. It’s easier than fighting it. Because now that I live away from the city, I feel the darkness WAY more.

Once the sun sets, the blackness enfolds you. There’s less street lights. Less house lights. And no billboards, illuminating the ink.

The dark is deep. And wide.

As I lean in, I feel a sense of alignment. And it feels good.

For those of us in the southern hemisphere, this is our invitation to slow down. Our invitation to conserve our energy over these colder months. Our invitation to go into hibernation. To rest, deeply.

So this week’s email is all about embracing some practices to help with the winter months. And for those of you friends who are in the Northern hemisphere, may these serve as moments to pause and rest amidst the building energy of the warmer months.

• breathe like a wave: Whatever you’re doing, stop right now, close your eyes and take three long, slow, conscious breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth (with an audible AHHHHH if you can)

• worship the sun like a cat: if the clouds part and the sun appears, take a moment to pause - close your eyes and put your face in it and soak up its radiance.

• go see some live music: live music is healing. Being with other people, too. This week I’ll be heading along to Abbotsford Convent for Warm Mids Afternoon, watching my mates Clariloops, Willebrant and My Lovely Haunting play while I lie down and zen out. If you’re there, come say hi.

• be like a dog: smile at a passing stranger in the street. You never know how much of an impact you may have.

• start reading a new book: I’ve just finished Sonic Youth legend Kim Gordon’s excellent bio “Girl in a Band” and am now onto ’s brilliant Alice Coltrane bio “Cosmic Music”. I also just devoured “Don’t Believe Everything You Think” by Joseph Ngyuen.

  

• go for a walk: right now. Ideally somewhere where you can hear a bird or the sound of leaves or feet crunching on gravel. Keep walking til the noise in your head quietens down a little bit.

• go discover some new music: Two that I’m currently rinsing are Zoltan Fecso and Anna Morley’s gorgeous “Desire Path”

Seventeen years ago, I said goodbye to my dad. He was just shy of 66 years old. He was far too young to die.

19 May, 2009 was a cold and misty morning. One where a blanket of cloud covered the early hours as we drove to the hospital for our final goodbyes. But as the city awoke, the skies opened up to clear, crystal blues. I still remember the feeling of that sunshine on my numb body.

This Tuesday marked the anniversary of his death and it began with a similar, thick fog, clearing to blue, sunny skies. I wanted to do something to connect with him on this day, so in his honour, I went for a walk to see if I could find some birds.

My dad loved birds. And ever since he died, I’ve seen him in bird form. Specifically, Willie Wagtails.

Not only was his nickname Willie (and surname Wilson) but he was a cheeky, vivacious bird who made himself known, the minute he walked into a room. Just like the Willie Wagtail.

But I didn’t choose this bird for dad - it chose me. And my sisters. All three of us had significant experiences with these gorgeous, little birds. I still do.

So on Tuesday, wandering into Buckley Reserve near my home in Balnarring, the sun beaming through the mist and the forest coming to life, I wandered into a patch of woodland and stood quietly in the sun, eyes closed.

At first, I could mostly hear the traffic on the nearby road but as I waited, the sounds of the natural world began to emerge. Dozens of birds, squawking for attention. A morning symphony, underpinned by a huge flock of yellow tailed black cockatoos in the distance.

And after a while, the familiar chirp of a Willie Wagtail.

Hi Dad.

I had my phone with me, so I hit record as I stood there, totally present

Ahhh, who knows if dad really is a Willie Wagtail bird now. I’d like to think that’s the case but even if it’s not, I think it’s nice that that whenever I see or hear one, it reminds me of him. I pause whatever I’m doing for a moment, and I remember him.

And as far as I’m concerned, that’s a beautiful thing.

There’s a few things that I mark in my calendar when I get my new, yearly (paper) diary.

Birthdays. Anniversaries. Long weekends. School holidays.

And Eurovision.

I’m serious. In our house, Eurovision is almost bigger than Christmas. Seriously. IYKYK.

I feel like there’s three camps of you guys right now, reading this.

1. The Uninitiated: You’re shrugging your shoulders with zero interest, and probs about to close and delete the email. Please don’t. I’d love to enlighten you.

2. The Traumatised: You’re cringing with memories of your parents forcing you to watch it as a kid. I see you. But give it another go. I promise.

3. The Tragics: You’re already humming the theme song to yourself with a huge grin on your face as you count down the moments til you watch semi final 1. Note: please no spoilers, I’ll be waiting til the weekend to watch them.

For those of you in the first two categories, let me highlight some of the reasons why this is the (other), most wonderful time of the year.

1. The laffs.

2. The theatrics

3. The voices (and staging)

4. The costumes (or lack thereof)

5. Genuinely, great songs

6. And this guy again. Full song this time.

Any show that can make you laugh, cry, and astounded at someone’s vocals or dance moves, has to be pretty special.

SOUND BATHS COMING UP

I’m sure many of you are familiar with this magical lady’s face. . Her name is synonymous with meditation in Australia and beyond, and I am so insanely grateful that she fell into my life, ten years ago (almost to the date). I was recovering from a major health scare and it prompted me to change a lot about my lifestyle. Beginning a daily meditation practice was the cornerstone of this shift. Under Laura’s guidance, I began a twice daily, Vedic practice and have been doing it ever since. First thing in the morning, again in the afternoon. An hour a day. Every day.

Laura truly is one of a kind. She emits a palpable, grounding energy unlike anyone I’ve ever met. She is wise, kindhearted and has a wicked sense of humour. She also has great taste in music, art and food. I’d call her a guru but tbh, she’d probs laugh at me if I said that. Like any true guru. ;)

So, for those of you who haven’t yet met this very special lady, let’s dive in…

Share a book that you’ve read recently (or not so recently) and why you loved it.

Currently reading Women Who Run With The Wolves - every woman needs to read this book (and actually finish reading it!) I’ve had it on my bedside book shelf for years now with my aim to finish it by Winter Solstice. Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ writing is like nothing else. She teaches through storytelling that changes something in you from the inside out.

The book isn’t dense in anyway, but so incredibly powerful that you need to put it down for a little bit to let each chapter, each story, integrate and bring you home to your Wild Woman. Chapter’s 8 and 9 have been incredibly relevant of late!

What’s your go-to recipe at the moment?

A really quick one I love are these rice paper egg rolls I saw on IG.

You take a piece of rice paper, wet it, then put it in a hot frypan that has a little oil/ghee. Then crack an egg on the rice paper, swirl it around with a spoon. Add pinch of salt and some shallot (or anything else you want!) When the egg has cooked, roll it up. Cut it into sections (optional to dip into a roasted chili sauce) and eat!

You know, I don’t really listen to music that much as I have really come to love my own silence or the sounds of nature where I live. Also, lyrics get stuck in my head real bad for weeks! But I do get obsessed with albums, the latest one is Raye.

I also listen to a lot of mantra music so my mind gets ‘caught by the mantras’ and the healing benefits then flow into my week spontaneously. My husband loves music and is always listening to it, so I also get his musical influence in my day ;)

On my last teaching trip in Melbourne I walked to the St Kilda Botanical Gardens and went straight to the rose garden. While listening to Vedic wisdom I went and smelled every rose in the garden. What a delight for the senses! I was awwwwing and ahhhhhing with each one a different subtle flavour of infinity!

So many projects... it feels like a very creative year! I’ll always be teaching Vedic meditation courses, and I have a couple Bali retreats in July. I’m launching a Vedic mentorship ecosystem with in July for our community of advanced Vedic meditators and teachers who are living, leading, and stewarding the Veda in their work and home lives. I’m also building a house! The creativity is in full power there. With many more expansions taking place into 2027.

I hope you enjoyed meeting Laura as much as I enjoyed receiving her recommendations and listening to that gorgeous field recording. She keeps telling me I have to come up and record her garden sounds - keep an eye out ;)

‘What am I doing here? This city is FULL of musicians. I don’t belong here’

I’m sure any artist reading this will be familiar with that voice - that old, inner critic. Sleep deprived and jet lagged, here it was, weaseling its way into my head.

It almost won.

After an epic 12hr sleep, I awoke the next morning and, while wandering the manicured streets around my Airbnb, I looked up to where that night, on Mulholland Drive, I would perform my first set of IKSRE music outside of Australia. And I realized something.

Sure, there were heaps of musicians in LA. I was a single, tiny fish in a massive ocean.

But also, i heard another voice. A more encouraging one.

Only I could do this gig. Only I could bring the sounds of the Aussie wilderness to the LA hills. No one else.

And so I told my inner critic to get bent, and later that evening, i did the hard thing. Jetlagged and nursing the tail end of a cold, I brought the sounds of Kakadu, Mallacoota, and Boonwurrung Country to the sunset soaked hills of LA.

We can do hard things. We can choose to ignore our inner critic. We can grow. Exponentially.

Oceans of gratitude to Noah and living earth for inviting me along to your magical sunset stage, for putting the gig together and capturing these stunning photos. And to my dear friend Cynthia Bernard (marine eyes) for booking the gig and opening the evening with a magical DJ set. For a first IKSRE gig away from home, it was pretty much perfect.

The days that followed were pretty unreal - hangs with collaborators, friends and cousins. City time. Mountain time. Snow. Tacos. Sushi. And new music made.

I’m looking forward to sharing more photos (and most likely the full recording from the gig in coming weeks). Til then, I’m skipping over 1 May and heading home to the future to see my loves Xx

In the past week, I’ve discovered just how fascinated people are by birds. I take it for granted, as I’ve spent more than half of my life with a guy who lives and breathes them. But in the past week, I’ve been in several conversations where birds have become the topic and my husband has gleefully regaled people with stories about them.

Birds are such a huge part of my daily life here on Boonwurrung/Bunurong Country - and in my music. So from now on, in my weekly email, I’m going to include my weekly fav bird encounter. If I have photos, I’ll share them too. Alas yesterday when I saw the huge flock of fourteen, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos (Wylahs) flying over our back yard, I didn’t reach for my phone and instead, remained fully present with that spellbinding sight. Which it was. That’s the key with any bird watching. Remaining present to the moment. Not grabbing your phone.

Just a short update this week, my friends. I’ve been away for the last week and am just settling back home, before I disappear off to LA next week to hang with one of my fav humans in the entire world. This lady.

This time around, she’ll be doing a DJ set before I play a set of my tunes overlooking LA on Mulholland Drive, under a Eucalypt grove. Legit.

I first met at workshop thing for a fashion label. I can’t remember how or why I wound up at it, but however I did, I am glad I did, as I got to meet this incredible lady.

Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to experience a number of her artistic outputs (one of which, SWELL, I mentioned in last month’s cuppa with Matt Wicking) and all of them leave me seeing the world in a vastly different way.

Janenne is one of the most wildly creative people you will ever meet. She oozes magic, art and beauty from every pore on her body. She is so connected to the natural world that hanging out with her on a walk along the Bunurong/Boonwurrung cliffs (as I did a few weeks back), it’s hard to tell where the landscape ends and she begins.

She brings this sense to the art she creates - across every form imaginable. Writing, poetry, sculpture, music, spoken word, visual arts, events… all alongside a punk rock ethos of surprise. Finding amazing stuff in random places. Like the artwork she created on Mushroom Reef, Flinders back in January. Combining sculpture, poetry and music, immersed in this ancient landscape on the beach - it took my breath away.

Anyway. Enough of my jibber jabber, over to Janenne.

The Way Around by Nicholas Triolo, about walking around mountains. It is circular, attentive, listening-led nature writing — and walks us back to love. All things that feel aligned and urgent for me.

What’s your go-to recipe at the moment?

For me cooking is based on the availability of fresh produce. I don’t follow recipes, I create with what I can source — I feel most drawn to foods that make me feel good.

For breakfast tomorrow I’ll be having Chia Pudding:

With a small whisk, mix together organic black chia seeds, a little water and natural or coconut yoghurt (I love Shultz Organic Dairy).

Then add a healthy serve of frozen raspberries (frozen is the key here) or any berries you have on hand.

Pop it in the fridge overnight.

FINALLY! Tell me what you’re up to and whether you have anything exciting coming up that you’d like to share.

I’m currently in California offering my debut book Empathy Bleed at the Bombay Beach Biennale. It’s about two vastly different seas, the space in between, empathy and breath.

I’ll be offering the book back at home in Australia soon.

We’re also creating an art book library at Deep See Survey in Shoreham. It will be open to our community once a month for reading and perusing over cups of tea. There’s something alive in this simple idea for me — creating conditions where people can come together without needing to speak.

I hope you dug meeting the incredible Janenne and getting a little glimpse into her world, and are intrigued to explore her offerings. She’s quite literally, remarkable.
