I apologize.

Yesterday, I was inconvenienced because a water main broke, and for a period of time, I didn’t have water coming from my faucet when I wanted it.

It was inconvenient. It disrupted my routine. I noticed it immediately.

But this morning, sitting still after Fajr, I began to think about how quickly we can become frustrated by an inconvenience that, in the larger picture, is actually a blessing.

I had to stop and remind myself: I am blessed.

There are people in Gary, Indiana, who have been without electricity for nearly two weeks. Nearly two weeks without the basic comfort and necessity of power. Families trying to navigate daily life without something many of us take for granted—the ability to turn on a light, preserve food, regulate the temperature in our homes, charge our phones, and simply live with a sense of normalcy.

Gary Indiana: 2 Weeks Still no power

My inconvenience lasted for a moment.

For others, the crisis continues day after day.

And that should make us pause.

Sometimes we need to sit still long enough to see things clearly.

After morning prayer, when the world has not yet become loud, there is something powerful about simply being quiet. No phone calls. No meetings. No social media. No demands. Just you, your thoughts, and Allah.

Those moments can recalibrate the heart.

They can remind us that what we call a problem may actually be an opportunity to recognize a blessing.

The Qur’an reminds us:

“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.”
— Qur’an 14:7

Gratitude is more than saying Alhamdulillah when things are going well. Gratitude is also learning to recognize what we have when something we depend on is temporarily taken away.

No water?

I should be grateful for all the days I have water.

No electricity?

I should be grateful for every night I have lights, refrigeration, heat or air conditioning, and the ability to live comfortably.

And when I hear that our brothers and sisters in Gary are still struggling, gratitude should not make me indifferent. It should make me more compassionate.

If I am blessed, what responsibility comes with that blessing?

That is the question I am sitting with this morning.

We should be praying for the people of Gary, yes. But our prayers should also move us toward concern, action, and accountability. When people are suffering from circumstances that threaten their basic quality of life, we should care—regardless of whether we live in the same city, state, or even the same country.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that believers are like one body: when one part of the body suffers, the whole body responds.

That is the kind of community consciousness we need.

So, this morning, I apologize—not because I was wrong to be inconvenienced, but because my inconvenience reminded me how easy it is to lose perspective.

Sometimes we don’t realize how blessed we are until something small is taken away.

Today, I am choosing gratitude.

I am choosing perspective.

And I am choosing to pray for those who are experiencing a crisis far greater than my inconvenience.

May Allah bring relief to the people of Gary, restore their power, strengthen their communities, and move those with the authority and resources to respond with urgency and compassion.

And may Allah help all of us recognize our blessings—not simply for ourselves, but as opportunities to become a blessing to someone else.

Alhamdulillah for the water. Alhamdulillah for the electricity. Alhamdulillah for the ability to pray, reflect, and serve.

Sometimes sitting still after Fajr can help you see things clearly.

I am blessed. And because I am blessed, I have a responsibility to care.

Some moments in life let faith stay comfortable—and others call us to move.

I believe we are living through one of those moments.

Many of us are watching what is happening in our country with growing concern. We see fear being weaponized, vulnerable communities targeted, institutions tested, and authoritarian tendencies becoming increasingly normalized. It can leave us asking: What am I supposed to do? What difference can I make? Am I really prepared for this?

These questions bring me back to one of my favorite prayers in the Qur’an—the dua of Prophet Musa (Moses), عليه السلام.

Allah tells Musa:

“Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.” (Qur’an 20:24)

The Arabic word used to describe Pharaoh is ṭaghā: he exceeded the proper limits of power and became oppressive. And Allah’s first command to Musa is strikingly simple:

Go.

Not watch. Not complain. Not wait for someone else.

Go.

The khutbah that inspired this reflection begins from that same premise: every generation eventually faces a moment when faith must shape not only what we believe, but what we are willing to do.

But Musa doesn’t immediately charge toward Pharaoh. First, he prays.

“My Lord, Expand My Chest”

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي

“My Lord, expand my chest.”

This is where preparation begins.

Before asking Allah to change Pharaoh, Musa asks Allah to prepare Musa.

That challenges me.

It is easy to identify what is wrong with the world. It is harder to ask: What needs to change in me so that I can respond faithfully?

Do I have the courage to act without becoming arrogant? Can I hold conviction without hatred? Can I resist injustice without becoming unjust myself?

Musa doesn’t ask Allah to remove the assignment. He essentially asks, “Make me capable of carrying it.”

Perhaps some of our prayers need to change.

Instead of only praying, “Allah, make this problem go away,” perhaps we also need to pray:

“Allah, prepare me to confront it.”

“Untie the Knot From My Tongue”

Musa continues:

وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي ۝ يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي

“Untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech.”

That makes me wonder:

What is the knot in our tongues?

Fear of consequences?

Fear of losing relationships?

Fear of being labeled “political”?

Feeling like we don’t know enough?

Or have we convinced ourselves that Islam belongs primarily inside the masjid?

Islam has something to say about justice, poverty, oppression, human dignity, public trust, consultation, and accountability. The challenge is communicating those values so our neighbors can understand them.

The world doesn’t simply need Muslims defending Islam.

The world needs Muslims demonstrating what Islam contributes to the defense of human dignity.

That requires us to find our voice.

Who Is Your Harun?

Then Musa makes another remarkable request:

“And appoint for me a helper from my family—Aaron, my brother.”

Musa understood something we sometimes forget:

I cannot do this alone.

Neither can you.

Neither can I.

Our fascination with individual heroes can blind us to how change actually happens. Sustainable change requires relationships, teams, congregations, organizations, and coalitions. Musa asks Allah for someone who will strengthen him and share the responsibility.

So let me ask you:

Who is your Harun?

Who makes you stronger?

Who has gifts you don’t have?

Who will challenge you when you’re wrong and stand beside you when courage becomes difficult?

And perhaps an even more important question:

Whose Harun are you?

From Isolation to Organized Power

Musa asks Allah:

“Strengthen me through him and let him share my task.”

That sounds remarkably like organizing.

One isolated person can feel powerless. Ten people in relationship become stronger. Those ten can organize one hundred. A hundred organized people can influence a neighborhood. Thousands can transform a city.

Authoritarianism benefits when ordinary people believe they are isolated, afraid, and powerless.

The Qur’anic response is community.

Musa doesn’t ask Harun simply to stand behind him. He asks Allah to let Harun share the task.

That means our goal cannot simply be gathering followers.

We must develop leaders.

Imagine if each of us identified five or ten people.

Listen to them.

Build relationships with them.

Discover what they care about.

Connect their concerns to our Islamic values.

Invite them into meaningful action.

Then help them develop others.

That is how communities discover their power.

What Is Your Moment?

We admire courageous people after history has vindicated them.

But courage feels very different before you know how the story ends.

Musa didn’t know everything that would happen when he walked toward Pharaoh.

He simply knew Who sent him.

So perhaps these are the questions we should sit with:

What is happening right now that my faith won't let me ignore?

What knot in my tongue is keeping me silent?

Who is my Harun?

What responsibility am I willing to carry?

And most importantly:

What if this is my moment?

You may not feel ready.

Neither did Musa.

You may be afraid.

Musa knew fear.

You may feel powerless.

Musa stood before Pharaoh.

You may feel like you cannot do it alone.

Neither could Musa.

So pray his prayer.

Find your voice.

Find your Harun.

Find your people.

Build your courage.

Build your power.

Prepare for your moment.

And when that moment comes—

اذْهَبْ

Go.

Every relationship changes when you truly know the person.

You learn what brings them joy. What disappoints them. What they value. What they will tolerate—and what they will not. Over time, knowledge creates intimacy. Intimacy creates trust. And trust changes how you respond.

So I have been sitting with a simple question:

How well do I really know Allah?

Not how much Qur’an can I recite.

Not how many years have I been Muslim.

Not how many khutbahs have I delivered or prayers have I led.

How well do I know the One I worship?

Allah says:

“To Allah belong the Most Beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them.”
— Qur’an 7:180

The Names of Allah are not simply a list for children to memorize or calligraphy to hang on our walls. They are an invitation into a deeper relationship with our Creator.

Knowledge should lead to reflection. Reflection should lead to action.

ʿIlm. Tafakkur. ʿAmal.

I recently spent time reflecting on three descriptions of Allah found in Surah Al-Hashr, verses 22–24. The more I sat with them, the more personal they became.

Allah Knows You

Allah is the Knower of the unseen and the seen.

That means Allah knows what people see—and what they don’t.

People see our titles.

Our smiles.

Our accomplishments.

Our social media posts.

Our public strength.

But Allah knows the private battles.

He knows the disappointment you haven’t told anyone about. The fear behind the confidence. The tears wiped away before you walked into the room. The du’a you have made so many times that you are beginning to wonder if you should keep asking.

Allah even knows the prayer you cannot find the words to pray.

There is tremendous comfort in worshipping a Lord who does not need an explanation before He understands.

But there is also accountability.

The same Allah who sees our private pain sees our private choices.

When nobody else knows, Allah knows.

That should give the wounded hope—and the careless pause.

Are People Safe With You?

One of Allah’s Beautiful Names is Al-Mu’min—the Source and Granter of Security.

The Arabic root connects faith, trust, peace, and security.

That connection fascinates me.

We live in a society obsessed with security. We buy cameras, locks, alarms, insurance policies, and sophisticated technology. Yet many people remain deeply anxious.

Because you can secure a building and still have an unsettled heart.

Real security is ultimately a gift from Allah.

But here is where the reflection becomes uncomfortable.

If I claim to worship Al-Mu’min, am I a source of security for others?

Does my wife feel safe with my words?

Do my children feel emotionally secure in my presence?

Can people trust what I say?

Do the vulnerable feel protected around me?

Is my community safer because I am in it?

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand people are safe.

Faith is not only what happens between you and Allah on a prayer rug.

Faith should affect what people experience when they encounter you.

Stop Apologizing for Allah’s Artistry

Allah is also Al-Musawwir—the Bestower of Forms and Shapes.

Every face. Every fingerprint. Every shade of skin. Every eye. Every voice.

Allah fashioned creation with intention.

For Black people in America, this truth carries particular weight. Generations were taught—directly and indirectly—that our features, hair, skin, and very Blackness were somehow less beautiful.

Coming to know Allah’s attribute of Al-Musawwir helped me, a young man struggling with my identity and internalizing messages that wanted me to doubt myself and my worth. These attributes gave me a profound lifeline.

Islam offers a profound correction:

You are looking at the artistry of Allah.

Allah says He created the human being “in the best of forms.”

Perhaps we should be more careful about criticizing the work of the Artist.

And Al-Musawwir is still shaping us.

Some of life’s hardest experiences have shaped my heart in ways comfort never could. Loss has shaped me. Leadership has shaped me. Failure has shaped me. Thirty years of serving people has shaped me.

Sometimes hardship is the chisel.

That does not mean every painful thing is good. It means Allah is capable of producing something meaningful even from what hurts.

Do not resent the chisel in the hands of the Master Craftsman.

These three Names remind me:

Allah knows me.

Allah secures me.

Allah is shaping me.

And perhaps knowing that is enough to help us walk into another week with a little more trust.

This week, choose one Name of Allah.

Study it.

Sit with it.

Call upon Allah by it.

Then ask yourself:

If I truly believed this about Allah, what would change about me?

Because the goal is not simply to memorize the Names of Allah.

The goal is to know Him.

And the more we know Him, the more our worship should become character—and our character should become service. Every relationship changes when you truly know the person.

In a few days, America will celebrate 250 years.

Fireworks will fill the sky. Flags will wave. Patriotic songs will echo across neighborhoods. Speeches will celebrate liberty, democracy, and the American experiment.

And yet, many Americans will quietly ask themselves a different question:

What exactly are we celebrating?

I ask that question as an American.

I ask it as a Muslim.

I ask it as an African American.

I ask it as a husband, father, son, brother, entrepreneur, community leader, and Imam who has spent nearly three decades walking with people through addiction, incarceration, poverty, violence, grief, and hope.

I have experienced the best of America.

I have also experienced enough of the worst to know that loving this country requires more than waving a flag. It requires telling the truth.

America’s founding documents contain some of the most revolutionary political ideas ever written. The Declaration of Independence boldly proclaimed that “all men are created equal.” The Constitution created a framework for self-government unlike anything the world had seen.

Yet many of the very men who penned those words enslaved human beings, accumulated wealth through bondage, or benefited from systems built upon stolen Indigenous land. The Constitution itself originally counted enslaved Africans as three-fifths of a person for representation while denying them basic human rights. It protected slavery without ever naming it directly.

The American promise was breathtaking.

Its application was selective.

For people who looked like me, freedom often arrived with an asterisk.

From slavery to Reconstruction...

From Jim Crow to legalized segregation...

From redlining to mass incarceration...

From literacy tests to the weakening of the Voting Rights Act...

From racial covenants to modern battles over voting districts in states like Louisiana and Texas...

History has repeatedly forced America to decide whether its ideals belong to everyone or only to those already holding power.

The Qur’an reminds believers:

“O you who believe! Stand firmly for justice as witnesses for Allah, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or your close relatives.” (Qur’an 4:135)

Justice begins with honest self-examination.

Not denial.

Not defensiveness.

Not selective memory.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught:

“The best jihad is a word of truth before a tyrannical ruler.”

Whether authentic faith is expressed in a mosque, church, synagogue, or temple, communities of faith have historically carried the responsibility of speaking uncomfortable truths to powerful people. From the Hebrew prophets confronting kings, to Jesus challenging religious hypocrisy, to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ confronting the injustices of tribal Arabia, faith has rarely been comfortable.

It has always been consequential.

Today’s America presents another contradiction.

We remain the richest nation on earth and one of history’s greatest military and economic powers.

Yet millions struggle to afford housing.

Parents work two or three jobs yet remain one emergency away from financial collapse.

Healthcare bankrupts families.

Educational opportunity depends largely upon ZIP code.

Food insecurity exists alongside unimaginable wealth.

How does a nation powerful enough to shape the global economy struggle to ensure dignity for its own people?

That question belongs to Republicans.

It belongs to Democrats.

It belongs to independents.

It belongs to every one of us.

Because if we are honest, neither party owns innocence.

Each has governed.

Each has compromised.

Each has protected interests that too often seem disconnected from ordinary Americans trying to afford groceries, childcare, gasoline, rent, and healthcare.

Perhaps the deeper crisis isn’t political.

Perhaps it is moral.

America exports extraordinary innovation, technology, entertainment, and military power around the globe. Yet we have often exported something else as well—the assumption that our story is the world’s story. Too often, we have caricatured other civilizations, religions, and cultures while failing to examine our own contradictions.

As a Muslim, I know what it means to have my faith explained by people who have never entered a mosque.

As an African American, I know what it means for history to be sanitized.

As an American, I know both experiences can exist simultaneously.

That is cognitive dissonance.

It is possible to love America while refusing to romanticize it.

In fact, that may be the highest form of patriotism.

Islam teaches that every human being is born upon the fitrah—a natural disposition inclined toward truth and goodness (Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim). Nations, like people, can drift away from that original disposition. They require repentance, accountability, and renewal.

Maybe America does too.

This Fourth of July arrives under a heat advisory across much of the country.

Meteorologists explain it scientifically.

People of faith may also see symbolism.

Throughout scripture, heat refines precious metals. Fire purifies. It exposes impurities. It also reminds humanity that consequences accompany injustice.

No, I am not claiming the weather is divine judgment.

But I am asking whether this oppressive heat can become an invitation.

An invitation to examine ourselves before blaming our neighbors.

An invitation to cool our rhetoric while increasing our courage.

An invitation to recover what is best about the American experiment.

As America enters its 250th year, perhaps we need something more profound than another birthday celebration.

We need a reckoning.

Not a Republican reckoning.

Not a Democratic reckoning.

An American reckoning.

Perhaps even what I would call a Come-to-Muhammad moment—not a call for conversion, but an invitation to the kind of honest moral accounting that Islam demands before God. A moment of truth. A moment of repentance. A moment of justice. A moment of mercy.

The question America should ask at 250 is not whether we are the greatest nation in history.

The question is simpler.

Are we becoming the nation we have always claimed to be?

Because history will not judge us by the eloquence of our founding documents.

It will judge us by whether we finally had the courage to extend our promises to everyone.

I have a confession.

Every so often, I have to stop and ask myself a question that is both deeply personal and profoundly uncomfortable:

Am I still keeping the main thing the main thing?

After nearly thirty years as an imam, I’ve learned that the greatest danger to a person’s faith isn’t always disbelief. The greatest danger to a leader isn’t always scandal. The greatest threat to an organization isn’t always a lack of resources.

More often than not, it’s a distraction.

The slow, almost imperceptible drift away from the reason we began in the first place.

It doesn’t happen overnight.

It happens one meeting at a time.

One deadline at a time.

One crisis at a time.

One success at a time.

Until one day we wake up realizing we’ve become incredibly efficient at doing things that no longer serve our deepest purpose.

I don’t think this is simply an individual problem.

I think it’s one of the defining spiritual challenges of our age.

The Age of Constant Motion

We live in a culture that rewards motion more than meaning.

Our calendars are packed.

Our inboxes are overflowing.

Our phones constantly remind us that someone needs something.

Leadership has become performance.

Productivity has become virtue.

Even rest has become something we try to optimize.

The irony is that while we’ve become more connected than any generation in history, many of us have become increasingly disconnected from ourselves, from one another, and from God.

We’re doing more than ever.

But are we becoming more of who we were created to be?

Those are two very different questions.

Purpose with a Capital “P”

Recently, while preparing remarks for an interfaith retreat called The Sacred Pause, I found myself reflecting on a verse from the Qur’an that has anchored Muslims for more than fourteen centuries:

﴿وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ﴾

“I did not create jinn and humankind except that they worship Me.” (Qur’an 51:56)

This verse has often been misunderstood as limiting life to ritual acts of worship.

It does the opposite.

It expands worship to encompass every dimension of life.

Work can become worship.

Parenting can become worship.

Teaching can become worship.

Organizing can become worship.

Serving the poor can become worship.

Seeking justice can become worship.

Building institutions can become worship.

But only if they remain connected to the One for whom they were intended.

I often describe this as Purpose with a capital “P.”

Every one of us has gifts.

Every one of us has talents.

Every one of us has a calling uniquely shaped by our experiences.

Those gifts matter.

They are part of our purpose portfolio.

But our gifts are never the destination.

They are entrusted to us in service of something infinitely greater.

When our gifts become disconnected from God, they become monuments to ourselves.

When they remain connected to God, they become acts of worship.

That distinction changes everything.

The Danger of Good Work

Here’s the uncomfortable truth.

Sometimes our greatest distractions are good things.

Especially for those of us who lead.

We become consumed by budgets.

Programs.

Campaigns.

Metrics.

Grant reports.

Strategic plans.

Community meetings.

Social media.

Emails.

The work is important.

But good work can quietly crowd out the deeper work.

I’ve seen people spend years building remarkable organizations while neglecting their marriages.

I’ve watched activists burn themselves out trying to save communities without tending to their own souls.

I’ve met clergy who preached eloquently about God while privately admitting they no longer made time to simply sit with God.

I’ve even caught myself doing it.

The danger isn’t that we’re doing bad things.

The danger is allowing important things to replace ultimate things.

The Pattern Hidden in Revelation

One of the most beautiful patterns shared across the Abrahamic traditions is that God almost never sends people into public leadership without first calling them into solitude.

Moses had the mountain.

Abraham had the stars.

Mary was silent.

Jesus had the wilderness.

Muhammad ﷺ had the Cave of Hira.

Before revelation came stillness.

Before leadership came listening.

Before changing the world, one must allow God to transform the heart.

That pattern should tell us something.

Perhaps we spend too much time asking God to bless our activity and not enough time allowing Him to reshape our identity.

Leadership Is Always a Heart Issue

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught:

“Indeed, there is a piece of flesh in the body. If it is sound, the whole body is sound. If it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Truly, it is the heart.”

I’ve come to believe that every leadership crisis eventually becomes a heart crisis.

Organizations lose their way because leaders lose their way.

Communities fracture because hearts become hardened.

Families weaken because presence gives way to distraction.

Even nations begin to decline when they forget the moral principles that gave them life.

The solutions we usually propose are structural.

Better strategies.

More funding.

New technology.

Different messaging.

Those things matter.

But they cannot substitute for healthy hearts.

Healthy institutions are built by healthy people.

Why This Matters Right Now

This moment in our country’s history is demanding more from us than political opinions.

It is demanding moral clarity.

Communities across America are wrestling with deep polarization, economic uncertainty, declining trust in institutions, rising loneliness, and growing authoritarian impulses. Many people are exhausted. Others are angry. Still others have simply checked out.

In moments like these, it is easy to confuse urgency with purpose.

Faith reminds us that they are not the same.

Our responsibility is not merely to react to every headline.

It is to remain anchored deeply enough that our response reflects our values rather than our fears.

That is true whether we are leading a family, a mosque, a nonprofit, a business, or a movement.

Returning to the Heart

At Al-Maa’uun, we often say that direct service is not the destination—it is the doorway.

Feeding families matters.

Housing people matters.

Recovery matters.

Leadership development matters.

Community organizing matters.

Protecting democracy matters.

Building power matters.

But none of those things are ends in themselves.

They are expressions of something deeper.

If we feed people but lose compassion...

we have forgotten the main thing.

If we build organizations but neglect our families...

we have forgotten the main thing.

If we win influence but lose humility...

we have forgotten the main thing.

If we spend our lives talking about God but rarely make time to be with God...

we have forgotten the main thing.

The Sacred Pause

The retreat I recently attended was called The Sacred Pause in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I have not been able to get those words out of my mind.

Because perhaps the Sacred Pause is not an event.

Perhaps it is a spiritual discipline.

The courage to stop.

To examine ourselves.

To ask difficult questions.

To repent when necessary.

To realign our priorities.

To remember why we began.

The world will always reward speed.

God often rewards faithfulness.

And faithfulness almost always begins with remembering.

So today, before you answer another email...

Before you attend another meeting...

Before you launch another project...

Pause.

Ask yourself the question I continue asking myself:

Am I still keeping the main thing the main thing?

Because our greatest contribution to the world will never come merely from what we accomplish.

It will come from becoming the kind of people whose work flows from hearts anchored in God.

Everything else is secondary.

Every healthy relationship requires reciprocity.

Not equality. Not sameness. Not keeping score.

Reciprocity means mutual investment in a shared future.

Whether it is a husband and wife, a friendship, a business and its customers, a nonprofit and the community it serves, or even a nation and its citizens, healthy relationships depend upon a mutual exchange of value. Each party brings something to the table. Each party receives something from the table. Together, they create something greater than either could create alone.

Years ago, I read Dr. Verna Price’s powerful book The Power of People: Four Kinds of People Who Can Change Your Life. Her framework of Adders, Subtracters, Dividers, and Multipliers gave language to something I had experienced throughout my life and leadership journey.

Some people add value wherever they go. Some subtract from every relationship they enter. Some divide people and communities for their own benefit. Others multiply opportunities, relationships, resources, and hope.

The older I get, the more I realize that success in life is often less about what you know and more about who is walking beside you.

John Hope Bryant, founder of Operation HOPE, offers a similar insight in his discussion of the dynamics between givers and takers. “Giver and giver is erotic, a giver and taker is neurotic, a taker and a taker is psychotic.”

Islam has been teaching these truths for more than fourteen centuries.

Allah says:

“The believers, men and women, are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong.”

(Qur’an 9:71)

Notice that Allah describes believers as awliya’—protectors, supporters, and allies of one another. This is reciprocity. A healthy Muslim community is not built on consumption but on contribution. It is not built on what we can get, but on what we can give while receiving support from others.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reinforced this principle when he said:

“The believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts reinforce one another.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

A building cannot stand if one wall carries all the weight while the others contribute nothing. Every part strengthens every other part. Mutual support is not optional; it is structural.

In another profound hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

This is reciprocity elevated beyond transaction into transformation. It moves us from self-interest to shared interest.

The challenge is that reciprocity operates on multiple levels.

At the level of the body, reciprocity includes tangible things: time, labor, money, meals, transportation, childcare, and practical support. Communities cannot survive without people willing to physically contribute.

At the level of the mind, reciprocity includes wisdom, encouragement, accountability, ideas, and problem-solving. Some people may not have money to give, but they offer insight that helps everyone move forward.

At the level of the spirit, reciprocity includes compassion, prayer, forgiveness, mercy, patience, and sincere concern for another person’s well-being. Some of the most powerful contributions we make are invisible.

Not everyone can contribute equally in every season.

A young mother struggling to raise children may not be able to volunteer forty hours a month. An elder living on a fixed income may not be able to make large donations. Someone recovering from addiction may need more support than they can presently provide.

That does not mean reciprocity is absent.

Healthy reciprocity recognizes that contributions vary while commitment remains mutual.

The question is not whether everyone gives the same amount.

The question is whether everyone is committed to the same future.

That is true in marriages. It is true in friendships. It is true in businesses. It is true in organizations. It is true in movements.

As I reflect on nearly thirty years of community leadership, I have come to believe that one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is this:

Am I adding, subtracting, dividing, or multiplying?

When people see your name on their phone, do they feel gratitude or exhaustion?

When you enter a room, do you bring solutions or problems?

When you join an organization, do you strengthen it or merely consume its resources?

When you leave a relationship, are people better because you were there?

The future we seek—strong families, thriving communities, economic justice, spiritual growth, and collective liberation—will not be built by takers alone.

It will be built by people who understand the power of reciprocity.

People who give and receive.

People who support and allow themselves to be supported.

People who recognize that the healthiest relationships are not transactional but transformational.

The question is not simply what others are bringing to your life.

The more important question is:

What are you bringing to theirs?

In Part One of this series, we explored why successful movements put relationships before transactions. In Part Two, we examined how movements survive and grow through intentional cultivation of leadership.

Now we arrive at the third and final staple of every successful movement:

Shared purpose and collective action.

Because relationships with leadership create community.

Leadership without action creates frustration.

But when relationships, leadership, and collective action come together, communities become powerful enough to shape history.

Today, there is an empty chair in America.

It sits at school board meetings.

It sits at city council meetings.

It sits at community gatherings.

It sits at polling places.

It sits at neighborhood associations.

It sits at environmental hearings.

It sits at public forums where decisions are being made about healthcare, housing, education, voting rights, public safety, and economic opportunity.

Too often, that empty chair belongs to us.

And when we leave our chairs empty, someone else fills them.

The question is not whether decisions will be made.

The question is who will be in the room when they are.

This reality carries particular urgency for the American Muslim community.

For decades, many Muslims have understandably focused on building institutions—masajid, schools, nonprofits, businesses, and charitable organizations. These institutions remain critically important. Yet the challenges facing our communities today require something more.

We must move from institution-building alone to power-building.

Not power over people.

Power with people.

Power rooted in relationships, leadership, and organized communities working together for the common good.

Islamic history offers a powerful lesson.

After the passing of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the Muslim community faced enormous uncertainty. The community could have fragmented under pressure. Instead, generations of companions, scholars, leaders, merchants, teachers, and ordinary believers assumed responsibility for preserving and advancing the mission.

The community endured because leadership became collective.

The work belonged to everyone.

This principle remains relevant today.

The challenges facing our nation are not abstract political debates. They affect real people in our neighborhoods every day.

Families worry about rising costs and economic insecurity.

Seniors worry about healthcare access and affordability.

Many communities are concerned about changes to environmental protections and the long-term impact on public health.

Returning citizens continue to face barriers to full participation in civic and economic life.

Communities across the country remain engaged in ongoing conversations about voting access, representation, and ensuring that every voice is heard.

In moments like these, disengagement is not neutrality.

Disengagement is surrender.

The answer is not anger.

The answer is organization.

At Al-Maa’uun, we believe direct service and community organizing are not separate activities. They are part of the same journey.

The person who comes for food assistance is not merely a recipient of services.

They are a future leader.

The senior receiving Meals on Wheels is not simply receiving support.

They possess wisdom that can strengthen a community.

The returning citizen rebuilding their life is not a problem to be solved.

They are a neighbor whose voice deserves to be heard.

The young person in a mentoring program is not simply being served.

They are being prepared to lead.

This is why there may be no more important work for the American Muslim community today than building people-centered movements rooted in service, leadership development, and civic participation.

We need people willing to knock on doors and listen.

People willing to help neighbors understand how public decisions affect their daily lives.

People are willing to ensure seniors can participate.

People willing to welcome returning citizens into community life.

People willing to register voters, encourage participation, and help protect every eligible person’s right to be heard.

People willing to build bridges across race, faith, class, and political differences.

History teaches us that democracy is not sustained by institutions alone.

It is sustained by participation.

It is sustained by ordinary people who refuse to leave their chairs empty.

Call to Action

This week, do three things:

1. Have one meaningful conversation with a neighbor about the future of your community.

2. Identify one person whose voice is often missing from public conversations and invite them into the discussion.

3. Commit to one act of civic engagement—attend a meeting, volunteer, help educate voters, or participate in a community organizing effort.

The future will not be decided solely by those with the most money, influence, or access.

It will be decided by those willing to show up.

The most dangerous place in America is the seat we leave unfilled.

The most powerful act we can take is to sit down, speak up, and bring others with us.

Because when ordinary people organize around a shared purpose, history changes.

And the chair is no longer empty.

In Part One of this series, we explored why successful movements put relationships before transactions. Relationships create trust, and trust creates the foundation for collective action.

But relationships alone are not enough.

If relationships are the foundation of a movement, leadership development is the engine that moves it forward.

One of the greatest mistakes organizations make is confusing activity with leadership. They recruit volunteers, fill committees, and organize events, but fail to intentionally develop new leaders. As a result, the same small group of people carries the burden year after year while everyone else remains on the sidelines.

Movements do not fail because they run out of problems to solve.

They fail because they run out of leaders.

This challenge is not new.

In Islamic history, one of the most remarkable aspects of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) leadership was his commitment to developing others. He did not build a community dependent upon his presence alone. Instead, he cultivated leaders at every level of society.

Consider the example of Mus’ab ibn Umayr. Before the migration to Madinah, the Prophet sent Mus’ab as a teacher, organizer, and ambassador. Mus’ab was not chosen because he was the wealthiest, oldest, or most influential person in Arabia. He was chosen because he had been developed into a capable leader who could build relationships, communicate values, and organize people around a shared vision.

By the time the Prophet arrived in Madinah, much of the groundwork for a thriving community had already been laid.

This is what leadership development looks like.

It is not about creating followers.

It is about creating more leaders.

Modern history offers a similar lesson.

The Civil Rights Movement is often remembered through iconic figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Yet historians have repeatedly pointed out that the movement’s true strength came from thousands of local leaders who organized neighborhoods, churches, schools, and communities across the South.

One of the movement’s most influential organizers, Ella Baker, famously argued that “strong people don’t need strong leaders.”

Her point was profound.

Movements become powerful when ordinary people discover their own capacity to lead.

The voter registration drives, freedom schools, community meetings, and grassroots campaigns that transformed America were successful because leadership was distributed throughout the community rather than concentrated in a few individuals.

Today’s challenges demand the same approach.

Communities are facing economic uncertainty, attacks on democratic norms, threats to voting access, environmental injustice, and growing political polarization. At the same time, many people feel powerless to influence the decisions affecting their lives.

The answer is not simply better messaging.

The answer is leadership development.

At Al-Maa’uun, we view direct service as a pathway to leadership. The senior receiving Meals on Wheels, the resident in transitional housing, the young person in a mentoring program, the returning citizen rebuilding their life, and the community member attending a food distribution all possess leadership potential.

The question is not whether leaders exist.

The question is whether we are creating opportunities for them to emerge.

A people-centered movement develops leaders by inviting people into meaningful responsibility. It trains them to facilitate conversations, organize neighbors, register voters, protect access to the ballot, advocate for their communities, and engage those who are often left out of public conversations.

Leadership is not reserved for elected officials, nonprofit executives, or public figures.

Leadership belongs to anyone willing to serve, organize, and help others act collectively.

In this moment, our communities need more than programs.

We need leaders.

Leaders who will knock on doors and listen.

Leaders who will engage seniors and ensure they are not forgotten.

Leaders who will welcome returning citizens back into civic life.

Leaders who will help neighbors understand the issues affecting their communities.

Leaders who believe that democracy works best when everyone has a voice and everyone participates.

The future of any movement depends on its ability to replace itself with something stronger.

That only happens when leadership is shared.

Call to Action

This week, identify one person who shows leadership potential and invest in them.

Invite them to a meeting. Ask them to help organize a community conversation. Encourage them to register voters, lead a volunteer project, or coordinate outreach in their neighborhood.

Most movements spend their time looking for heroes.

Successful movements build leaders.

And when leaders multiply, communities become powerful enough to shape their own future.

In our previous blog, The Power of People-Centered Movements, we identified three staples of successful movements. The first—and perhaps most foundational—is relationships before transactions.

This principle sounds simple, but in practice it is increasingly rare.

Too many institutions, organizations, and movements engage people only when they need something. We ask people to attend an event, sign a petition, volunteer for a program, donate money, or show up for a campaign. Yet we often fail to invest in the relationships that make long-term participation possible.

The result is predictable: people become disconnected, communities become fragmented, and movements struggle to sustain momentum.

At Al-Maa’uun, we have learned a different lesson.

For years, our work has centered on direct service: feeding families, supporting seniors, helping people find housing, assisting returning citizens, mentoring youth, and helping individuals overcome barriers to employment and stability. Yet we have never viewed direct service as the end goal.

Direct service is the beginning of the relationship.

Every meal delivered, every housing placement secured, every mentoring conversation, and every recovery support meeting creates an opportunity to build trust. Trust creates belonging. Belonging creates leadership. Leadership creates organized communities capable of solving larger problems together.

This approach has deep historical roots.

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established the community in Madinah, he did not begin with political institutions. He began by building relationships among people who previously saw themselves as separate tribes, competing interests, and disconnected communities. The strength of that society emerged not from wealth or power but from the bonds of trust that united ordinary people around a common purpose.

History repeatedly demonstrates this truth: communities become powerful when people see themselves as connected to one another.

That lesson is especially important today.

Across the country, many communities are experiencing growing economic pressure. Families are worried about the rising cost of living. Seniors are concerned about maintaining access to healthcare and essential services. Working families are struggling to keep food on the table. Returning citizens often face barriers to employment and civic participation. Communities are also engaged in important debates about voting access, environmental protections, public spending priorities, and the future direction of democratic institutions.

In moments like these, isolation becomes dangerous.

When people feel disconnected, they disengage. They stop participating in civic life. They stop believing their voices matter. They stop seeing themselves as part of the solution.

People-centered movements offer another path.

Instead of asking, “How can we use people to build our organization?” we ask, “How can we help people build power in their own communities?”

That means ensuring every voice is heard.

It means engaging seniors who may feel forgotten.

It means supporting returning citizens as they reconnect with their communities.

It means helping neighbors register to vote, understand issues that affect their lives, and participate in civic processes.

It means knocking on doors—not merely to persuade—but to listen.

It means creating spaces where people can discuss challenges, identify solutions, and take action together.

Strong democracies depend on strong relationships.

Voting matters. Civic engagement matters. Community conversations matter. But none of those activities are sustainable without trust.

Relationships transform spectators into participants and participants into leaders.

That is why Al-Maa’uun’s model focuses not only on meeting immediate needs but also on developing community leadership. The person receiving services today may become tomorrow’s volunteer. The volunteer may become tomorrow’s organizer. The organizer may become tomorrow’s community leader.

This is how people-powered movements grow.

Not through transactions.

Through relationships.

Call to Action

This week, commit to one act of intentional relationship-building. Visit a senior. Check on a neighbor. Reach out to a returning citizen. Attend a community meeting. Listen more than you speak.

Then ask one simple question:

“What issue matters most to you, and how can we work on it together?”

Every movement begins with a conversation.

Every conversation begins with a relationship.

And every relationship has the potential to change a community.

In every generation, there are moments when people are forced to decide whether change will come from institutions, charismatic leaders, or ordinary people working together. History consistently points to the same answer: lasting transformation happens when movements become people-centered and people-powered.

The most successful movements are rarely built on the wealthiest organizations, the most polished branding, or the loudest voices. Instead, they are built on relationships, trust, shared purpose, and the willingness of ordinary people to act collectively in pursuit of something greater than themselves.

History offers countless examples.

One of the most remarkable examples comes from early Islamic history. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers established the community in Madinah, they did not begin with wealth, political power, or military dominance. They began by building relationships among people from different tribes, backgrounds, and economic classes. The strength of that community was not found in its infrastructure but in its ability to create bonds of mutual responsibility and shared sacrifice. The movement grew because people believed they had ownership in its success.

This lesson extends far beyond religion. Historians often note that the endurance of the early Muslim community depended less on resources and more on its ability to organize people around common values and collective action. The movement’s greatest asset was its people.

Modern history tells a similar story.

The American Civil Rights Movement did not succeed because it had the most money or the strongest institutions. It succeeded because ordinary people organized churches, neighborhoods, schools, and communities. The Montgomery Bus Boycott lasted over a year because thousands of people made daily sacrifices. The movement’s victories were achieved not by a few famous leaders but by countless individuals whose names rarely appear in history books.

More recently, grassroots movements for immigrant rights, environmental justice, and criminal justice reform have demonstrated the same principle. Communities that were often dismissed as powerless have won policy changes, shifted public narratives, and held powerful institutions accountable by developing people power. Their strength came from organized relationships rather than organizational prestige.

This is an important lesson for our current moment.

Too often, movement spaces become distracted by what appears impressive on the surface. We celebrate large budgets, polished presentations, social media followings, and professionalized structures. While these things can be useful, they are not substitutes for genuine community power.

The shiniest organization is not always the strongest organization.

Many well-funded initiatives have disappeared after a few years because they lacked deep roots among the people they claimed to serve. Meanwhile, smaller organizations with fewer resources have survived for decades by investing in relationships, leadership development, and community ownership.

People-centered movements understand a simple truth: people are not consumers of change. They are producers of change.

If we hope to build movements capable of meeting today’s challenges—from economic inequality to threats against democracy—we must return to the fundamentals.

Three staples are essential for successful movement spaces:

Relationships Before Transactions

Strong movements are built on trust. People are more willing to take risks, stay engaged, and work through conflict when they feel seen, valued, and connected. Relationships create resilience that money cannot buy.

Leadership Development

Every successful movement invests in developing new leaders. Rather than concentrating authority in a few individuals, people-centered movements constantly identify, train, mentor, and empower others to lead. The goal is multiplication, not dependency.

Shared Purpose and Collective Action

People need a clear understanding of what they are fighting for and why it matters. Successful movements connect individual struggles to collective solutions and create opportunities for people to act together. Shared purpose transforms isolated frustration into organized power.

The challenges before us are significant. Yet history reminds us that ordinary people have repeatedly overcome extraordinary odds. They have done so not because they possessed the most resources, but because they possessed something more powerful: each other.

The future will not be shaped by the most impressive institutions alone. It will be shaped by communities willing to organize, sacrifice, build relationships, develop leaders, and act together.

The question is not whether change is possible.

The question is whether we are willing to become the people who make it possible.

In moments of public scandal and allegations of fraud, communities are often faced with two choices: pursue accountability with fairness or descend into collective blame and public hysteria. Unfortunately, history has shown that America too often chooses the second path when the accused are Black, immigrant, or from marginalized communities.

Islam speaks directly to moments like these. Allah says in the Qur’an:

“O you who believe! Stand firmly for justice as witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves, your parents, or your relatives.”
(Surah An-Nisā’ 4:135)

Justice in Islam is not selective. It is not based on race, tribe, wealth, or political convenience. It requires honesty, fairness, and moral consistency—even when uncomfortable.

The recent wave of allegations surrounding fraud in Minnesota has once again exposed a dangerous pattern. Instead of focusing narrowly on the individuals responsible, entire communities—particularly the Somali community—have come under suspicion, scrutiny, and demonization. This pattern is deeply troubling because it mirrors what America has historically done to African Americans for generations: take the actions of a few and project guilt onto the many.

The Qur’an explicitly rejects this principle of collective guilt:

“No soul shall bear the burden of another.”
(Surah Al-An‘ām 6:164)

Islamic justice is individualized. Responsibility belongs to those who commit wrongdoing—not entire ethnic groups, immigrant populations, or communities. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reinforced this principle repeatedly by refusing to punish entire tribes or families for the crimes of individuals.

We know the consequences of collective blame because Black America is still living with them.

For decades, African American communities were criminalized through media narratives, political rhetoric, and policy decisions that painted entire neighborhoods as inherently dangerous or corrupt. The “War on Drugs” became a war on Black communities. Harsh policing, mass incarceration, surveillance, disinvestment, and social stigma followed. Even today, long after many policies have been exposed as discriminatory and ineffective, the lingering effects remain: broken trust, economic instability, over-policing, and the psychological burden of always having to prove one’s innocence and humanity.

The Somali community now risks being pushed into a similar narrative.

Most Somali families in Minnesota are hardworking, law-abiding people striving to build stable lives, raise families, contribute to society, and pursue opportunity. Yet when allegations of fraud emerge, public discourse often shifts from investigating individuals to questioning an entire people. That is not justice. That is collective punishment through public perception.

Minority communities often live under what can be called the “group burden.” It is an unwritten social reality in which the actions of one person are perceived to reflect on the entire community. Members of marginalized groups know this burden intimately. They know that one scandal, one arrest, or one public failure can reinforce stereotypes that impact everyone else seeking employment, housing, funding, credibility, or equal treatment.

White communities are rarely subjected to this same standard. When white individuals commit fraud, violence, or corruption, society generally treats them as individuals. Their crimes are individualized. But when Black or immigrant communities are involved, the conversation often expands into cultural suspicion and racialized assumptions.

That double standard must be confronted honestly.

At the same time, accountability matters. Fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars cannot be ignored, minimized, or excused. Public trust depends upon program integrity. Every dollar stolen from public programs is a dollar taken away from vulnerable families, struggling children, seniors, and communities in need.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Whoever deceives us is not one of us.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Fraud is not merely a legal violation in Islam; it is a moral betrayal of society. Islam views public trust as sacred. The Qur’an commands:

“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due…”
(Surah An-Nisā’ 4:58)

A civilized society cannot function without trust. Communities must trust institutions. Taxpayers must trust that resources are used responsibly. Vulnerable people must trust that services intended for them will actually reach them. When fraud occurs, it weakens the social fabric for everyone.

But we must also tell the full truth: the responsibility for protecting taxpayer dollars does not rest solely on community organizations or service providers. The state itself bears enormous responsibility for creating systems with weak oversight, inadequate controls, poor monitoring, and inconsistent accountability mechanisms. Government agencies approved contracts, processed payments, and failed to implement safeguards that could have prevented abuse earlier. When systems lack transparency and oversight, fraud becomes easier to commit.

Yet the public response is often predictable. Instead of carefully fixing systemic failures, institutions overcorrect. Entire communities become over-policed, over-scrutinized, and burdened with excessive compliance measures that punish even honest organizations trying to serve people effectively.

Ironically, in some of the most publicized cases, the alleged ringleader was a white woman who, up until sentencing, reportedly failed to fully take responsibility while shifting blame onto others. Yet public outrage still disproportionately focused on Somali and Black communities. That reality reveals how racial bias shapes perception long before facts are fully understood.

We must resist both corruption and racial scapegoating simultaneously.

The real losers in all of this are the people who depend upon these services. Families needing food assistance. Seniors requiring care. Youth needing mentorship. Individuals seeking recovery support, housing, and workforce opportunities. When fraud scandals erupt, programs are frozen, funding disappears, trust erodes, and communities already struggling suffer even more.

Bad actors harm communities twice: first through theft, and second through the destruction of public confidence.

The path forward requires balance. We need strong program integrity, transparent oversight, and accountability for wrongdoing. But we also need moral courage to reject racialized narratives that criminalize entire communities. Justice must be specific, evidence-based, and fair—not driven by fear, bias, or political opportunism.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Do not let the hatred of a people cause you to be unjust. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.”
(Surah Al-Mā’idah 5:8)

If we fail to learn this lesson, we risk repeating a painful American cycle where marginalized communities become permanent suspects instead of equal citizens deserving dignity, fairness, and opportunity.

This weekend, I attended an Imam’s conference hosted by the North American Imams Fellows, and I was challenged by a powerful presentation from Shaykh Waleed Basyouni. His framing was both direct and unsettling in the best way—a provocation for Imams to examine not just what we say, but where we stand.

The central question lingered: “Is your minbar public or private?”

What is a Minbar?

It’s a simple question—but one that carries deep meaning, especially considering the responsibility it represents.

A minbar is the elevated platform or pulpit in a mosque from which the Imam delivers the khutbah (sermon), particularly on Jumu’ah (Friday) and during special occasions like Eid.

From that lens, five traps were laid out—real dangers that can quietly erode the integrity, relevance, and impact of the Imam in this critical moment for American Muslims.

1. The Private Minbar Trap

As highlighted by Shaykh Waleed, the Imam’s authority will not last if it remains confined to the masjid. When the minbar is treated as a private space, disconnected from the realities shaping people’s lives, it loses its transformative power.

The prophetic model was never limited to ritual leadership. It was public, engaged, and responsive.

If we are absent from the public square—where policies are made, and narratives are shaped—then we have limited our own relevance. The Imam must carry the moral voice of Islam beyond the walls of the mosque and into society.

2. The Partisan Trap

Shaykh Waleed warned against the danger of becoming a partisan Imam.

There is a critical distinction between being political and being partisan. Islam calls us to stand for justice, to speak on issues that affect human dignity. But partisanship—aligning blindly with a political party—compromises the Imam’s independence.

When an Imam becomes predictable in political allegiance, they risk losing the ability to speak truth across the board.

Our loyalty must remain with principles, not parties. We are not representatives of political platforms—we are carriers of a moral tradition.

3. Popularity Over Credibility

Another trap identified in the presentation was the temptation to prioritize popularity over credibility.

In an age driven by attention and visibility, it is easy for Imams to fall into the pattern of saying what is appealing rather than what is necessary.

But credibility is built over time—through knowledge, consistency, and integrity.

Shaykh Waleed’s point was clear: the Imam’s role is not to entertain or to build a following, but to guide. And guidance often requires discomfort. If we chase popularity, we risk diluting the very message we are entrusted to carry.

4. The Ego Trap

The minbar is an Amanah—a sacred trust. Yet, as Shaykh Waleed emphasized, the ego can quietly infiltrate that space.

When leadership becomes about self—recognition, influence, and control, it distorts intention. The focus shifts from service to self-preservation.

The Imam must remain vigilant against this trap by constantly renewing intention, seeking humility, and remembering that we are servants of the message—not the center of it.

True leadership is grounded in sincerity (ikhlāṣ) and service (khidmah), not personal elevation.

5. The Illusion of Privacy

Finally, Shaykh Waleed reminded us of a sobering reality: every word an Imam speaks is public.

There is no such thing as a “private” statement when you occupy a position of moral leadership. Whether spoken on the minbar, in a meeting, or online, our words carry weight and consequences.

This reality demands discipline. It calls us to speak with care, clarity, and principle. Not fearfully—but responsibly.

A Call to Action: Reclaiming the Public Minbar

These five traps are not theoretical—they are present realities. And they challenge us to reimagine the role of the Imam in America today.

We are living in a time of political polarization, social fragmentation, and intellectual confusion. Our communities are looking for guidance that is both rooted and relevant.

The question is no longer whether the Imam should engage the public sphere. The question is how we will do so—without losing our integrity.

We must:

• Extend our leadership beyond the masjid into the public square

• Remain principled without becoming partisan

• Choose credibility over popularity

• Lead with humility, guarding against ego

• Speak with awareness that our words carry public responsibility

The minbar was never meant to be private.

It is a trust. A platform. A responsibility.

And in this moment, it must become a bridge—connecting faith to action and belief to justice.

So again, the question stands before us:
Is your minbar public or private?

People spend a lifetime asking, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” At my age, I’ve learned something deeper: I’m still growing. And what I want to be—more than anything—is a man who leaves behind something worthy in you.

So this letter isn’t just about you growing up. It’s about who we are becoming—together.

Khi, my thoughtful and creative one—your sensitivity is not a weakness. Don’t let this world convince you otherwise. You feel deeply, you see things others miss, and you carry a kind of quiet wisdom. Guard that. Shape it. Use it to build, to write, to create beauty where others only see brokenness. The world can be harsh, especially to those who care. But I need you to stay soft in heart and strong in spirit. That balance will be your superpower.

Baby Nas, my determined one—you’ve got something in you that refuses to quit. I see it every time you set your mind on something. That grit will take you far, but remember: strength is not just about pushing through—it’s about knowing when to stand firm and when to stand for others. Discipline your energy. Aim it toward purpose. Never let your determination turn into stubbornness without direction. You were built to overcome—but also to uplift.

And Sai Sai, my little old soul—you watch, you listen, and you understand more than people expect. There’s a depth in you already, a calm awareness. Stay curious. Ask questions. Don’t rush to grow up, even though part of you already feels older than your years. Your intelligence will open doors, but your character will determine what you do once you walk through them.

My dear boys, you are growing up in a world that can feel confusing. There is division everywhere—people choosing sides instead of choosing truth. There is greed—people chasing more while forgetting what matters. There is misinformation—voices louder than wisdom.

But don’t miss this: there is also opportunity. There is promise. There are possibilities that generations before you could only dream of.

And that’s where my hope lives.

I won’t pretend I don’t worry. I do. I worry about what you’ll face, what you’ll have to unlearn, what you’ll have to stand against. But my faith is stronger than my fear. I believe in the strength Allah placed inside each of you. I believe you can navigate this world without losing your soul.

I challenge you to be different.

Be truthful when it’s easier to lie. Be generous when others are selfish. Be united when others divide. Be seekers of knowledge in a world full of noise.

And never forget who you are.

You come from people who pray, who serve, who stand up when it’s hard. You come from love. And you will always have mine.

So if you ever ask me, “Papa, what do you want to be when you grow up?” My answer is this:

I want to be a man who raised grandsons that made this world better than they found it.

And I believe, with all my heart, that you will.

In an age of endless information, one of the most valuable assets a person can have is not simply access to knowledge—but access to trusted knowledge. From a Muslim perspective, this is not a new concept. Our tradition is rooted in the idea that truth must be verified, chains must be authenticated, and sources must be reliable. The Qur’an reminds us: “If a corrupt person brings you news, verify it…” (49:6). This is more than advice—it is a framework for living with clarity and integrity.

A trusted source protects your mind, your decisions, and ultimately your destiny.

The Danger of Confirmation Bias

One of the greatest threats to sound judgment today is confirmation bias—the tendency to seek out, interpret, and remember information in a way that confirms what we already believe. It feels comfortable. It validates us. But it can also mislead us.

Confirmation bias turns opinions into “facts” and isolates us in echo chambers. It distorts reality and can lead to poor decisions in leadership, family life, health, and faith. A person trapped in confirmation bias is not learning—they are reinforcing.

From a spiritual perspective, this is dangerous. It can lead to arrogance, where one assumes they are always right, and closes the door to رشد (growth). It can even affect how we interpret the deen, selectively choosing opinions or interpretations that align with our desires rather than truth.

What’s the Opposite?

The opposite of confirmation bias is often described as intellectual humility or open-minded critical thinking.

In Islam, this is closely tied to ikhlāṣ (sincerity) and taqwā (God-consciousness). It is the willingness to say:

“I might be wrong. Let me seek what is right.”

It means actively seeking out credible, knowledgeable voices—even when they challenge you. It means weighing evidence, consulting scholars, and surrounding yourself with people who are not afraid to tell you the truth.

This is not weakness. It is strength.

Trusted Sources as a High-Performance Strategy

High performers—whether in business, leadership, or community building—do not operate in isolation. They build ecosystems of trust.

A trusted source does three critical things:

1. Clarifies Reality – They help you see things as they are, not as you wish them to be.

2. Challenges Blind Spots – They identify what you cannot see about yourself.

3. Accelerates Growth – They shorten your learning curve by offering wisdom, not just information.

In Islamic history, the scholars of hadith traveled thousands of miles to verify a single narration. Why? Because they understood that accuracy matters. Your source determines your outcome.

In your own life, the same principle applies. If your inputs are flawed, your outputs will be flawed.

Who’s in Your Circle?

This leads to a critical question: Who do you trust?

Your circle should not just be people who support you—they should be people who strengthen you.

Ask yourself:

• Do I have people who will correct me when I’m wrong?

• Do I have scholars or mentors I can turn to for guidance?

• Do I expose myself to diverse, credible perspectives?

• Or am I surrounded by voices that simply echo my own?

The Prophet ﷺ cultivated companions who spoke truth, even when it was difficult. Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) famously said, “May Allah have mercy on the one who shows me my faults.” That is the mindset of someone committed to growth.

Building Your Trusted Network

To build a circle of trusted sources:

• Seek people of knowledge and integrity

• Value truth over comfort

• Be teachable and open to correction

• Diversify your inputs while grounding yourself in authentic scholarship

Final Thought

In a world full of noise, discernment is power. A trusted source is not just a convenience—it is a necessity.

Your growth, your leadership, and your faith depend on it.

So ask yourself honestly:

Who’s shaping your thinking?

And are they worthy of that influence?

In a world that often measures generosity by dollars and cents, Islam calls us to something far greater. Generosity is not simply an act—it is a way of being, a reflection of the heart, and a sign of spiritual maturity. The believer is not only someone who gives, but someone who lives generously: with wealth, time, mercy, attention, and presence.

The Qur’an places generosity at the very center of righteousness. Allah says:

لَّيْسَ الْبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ قِبَلَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ … وَآتَى الْمَالَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ
“Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but true righteousness is… to give wealth, despite loving it…” (Qur’an 2:177)

This powerful concept of al-birr reminds us that true goodness is not performative—it is transformational. It shows up in how we care for others, especially when it requires sacrifice. Real generosity is not giving what is extra. It is giving what matters.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embodied this reality in the most complete way. He was described as the most generous of people, and his generosity extended far beyond money. He gave people his time, attention, compassion, and dignity. He uplifted others through his presence, making people feel valued and seen.

This teaches us an important truth: generosity is bigger than charity.

A generous life looks like:

• Giving your time to mentor a young person

• Offering patience to someone who is struggling

• Extending mercy when others fall short

• Sharing knowledge to guide someone forward

• Being fully present with those who feel alone

Some of the most meaningful acts of generosity cost nothing—but carry immeasurable value.

And the reality is, our communities are already rich with this spirit. The Muslim community does not lack generosity—it often lacks the means to tell its story. Research consistently shows that Muslims are among the most charitable communities, giving both within and beyond their faith circles. From supporting local masājid and food programs to funding global humanitarian relief, generosity is deeply embedded in our tradition.

But generosity grows when it is seen, shared, and celebrated.

The showcase is more than an exhibit—it is a living narrative. It invites us to see generosity not as isolated acts, but as a collective identity. Through storytelling, dialogue, and community engagement, it reminds us that generosity is not rare—it is who we are when we live our faith fully.

Because when we tell stories of generosity, we don’t just inform—we inspire.

Inspired generosity begins with a shift: from scarcity to abundance, from fear to trust, from isolation to responsibility. Allah reminds us that while Shayṭān threatens us with poverty, Allah promises us increase. Every act of giving becomes an act of faith.

So this week, challenge yourself: give something every day. Your wealth, your words, your time, your dua. And just as importantly—share the stories of generosity you witness.

Because in Islam, generosity is not just what we do.

It is who we are becoming.

In times of crisis, especially when fear and division seem to deepen, the challenge before us is not simply to react — it’s to respond in a way that strengthens our souls, our communities, and the fabric of the nation we still believe in.

America — as imperfect as it has been and continues to be — remains an idea worth fighting for and improving upon. As African Americans, as Muslims, as members of faith communities, and as human beings committed to justice and dignity, we know that the soul of this nation does not reside in power alone, but in how we uphold justice, extend mercy, and stand with the vulnerable.

Authoritarianism thrives on isolation, division, and loneliness. It gains ground when fear fractures community bonds and neighbors are pitted against one another. But in Islam — in iman (faith) — we are taught that true strength is not in dominance, but in ummah (community), cohesion, and brotherhood/sisterhood.

When fear was unleashed in Minnesota — when thousands of federal agents poured into neighborhoods, making even lawful U.S. citizens afraid to go to school or work, when parents worried about sending their children outside, and when constitutional rights were challenged — the faithful did not retreat into silence.   Instead, people organized, protested peacefully, cared for one another, and created mutual aid networks to support those most affected.  

This is true grit — not hardened aggression, but courage tempered with compassion.

Winning the Moment Without Losing Our Souls

Winning this moment does not mean defeating an opponent alone; it means upholding human dignity, defending constitutional rights, and ensuring our communities are not left behind in the turbulence of fear and political power.

Here’s what that looks like:

1. Ground Yourself in Faith and Community

Faith without action can languish in abstraction, but faith expressed through community is powerful. Islam teaches us that believers are like one body; when one part is hurt, the whole feels the pain. This moment calls us to embody our faith by being present, supportive, and active.

2. Offer Compassionate Mutual Aid

Food supplies, transportation support, childcare, legal resources, and accompaniment for those afraid to leave their homes are not just good deeds — they are manifestations of faith. Organizing donation drives, food deliveries, and community watch/support networks is a tangible way to protect neighbors.

3. Advocate Through Civic Channels

Call elected officials, support lawsuits and legal defenses that protect due process and civil rights, and attend public meetings. Our voices matter, and collective advocacy can redirect policy decisions and hold authorities accountable.

4. Educate and Empower

Know your rights and share them: what to do if stopped by law enforcement, how to document incidents safely, and how to access legal aid. Faith communities can host webinars and distribute right-to-know cards.

5. Stand in Peaceful Solidarity

Protests, vigils, and interfaith unity events show the world and our own communities that fear will not define us. Solidarity protects the vulnerable and strengthens the moral backbone of our nation.

A Call to Action

Now is not the time for paralysis. It is the time for practical compassion grounded in grit and faith. Here’s what you can do immediately:

    •    Contact your representatives — express concern about actions that threaten civil liberties and demand accountability and humane policy.

    •    Connect with local black and immigrant support organizations, donate or volunteer.

    •    Host community discussions rooted in shared faith values of justice and protection of the vulnerable.

    •    Offer support to neighbors who are afraid — check in, help with errands, provide resources.

    •    Educate your community on legal rights and mutual aid practices.

This moment tests not just what we oppose, but what we stand for. Let us stand for justice, for compassion, and for a nation that reflects the best of our shared humanity.

In moments of deep moral conviction, it is easy to believe that urgency justifies intrusion. History shows us that people pursuing justice often feel compelled to disrupt, confront, and interrupt. Yet faith traditions across the world draw a clear ethical boundary: houses of worship are not arenas for protest, but sanctuaries for the soul. When righteousness crosses that boundary, it risks losing the very moral authority it claims to uphold.

The Qur’an speaks with striking clarity on this matter. In one of its most inclusive passages, it declares that were it not for God’s protection, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques—places where God’s name is remembered—would be destroyed (Qur’an 22:40). This verse is remarkable not only for naming multiple faith traditions, but for affirming that all such spaces carry sacred weight. Their protection is presented as a divine concern, not a political preference.

Islamic ethics goes further by condemning any attempt to obstruct worship. The Qur’an asks, “Who is more unjust than one who prevents the name of God from being mentioned in His houses and strives toward their destruction?” (2:114). While this verse references mosques, its moral logic applies universally: interfering with prayer, reflection, or devotion is a profound injustice, regardless of who is worshipping.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embodied this principle throughout his life. Even during times of conflict, he strictly forbade harm to religious spaces and clergy. He instructed his companions not to attack monks in their monasteries or disrupt people devoted to worship. In Medina, he welcomed a delegation of Christians from Najran and allowed them to pray in his own mosque according to their tradition. This was not political theater—it was moral clarity. Sacred space, he demonstrated, deserves protection even amid disagreement.

These teachings challenge a dangerous assumption: that a righteous cause excuses unethical methods. Faith traditions remind us that how we pursue justice matters as much as why we pursue it. Violating a sanctuary in the name of moral urgency undermines the dignity of both worship and protest. It transforms a place meant for healing into a site of fear and fracture.

Houses of worship serve as refuges—especially for the weary, the grieving, and the searching. To intrude upon them is to disregard the vulnerability of those who enter seeking peace. Even when religious institutions themselves are part of broader social debates, the space of worship must remain protected. Accountability can and should occur, but never at the expense of the sacred.

At their best, faith traditions call us to restraint, empathy, and reverence. They remind us that God is not honored by coercion, nor justice advanced by desecration. When righteousness respects sacred boundaries, it deepens its moral force. When it does not, it risks becoming another form of harm.

Protecting houses of worship is not about silencing dissent—it is about preserving the dignity of the human spirit. And that, across faiths, is a cause worth defending.

In early January 2026, a shocking incident in Minneapolis jolted the nation. During what officials touted as the largest immigration enforcement operation ever – a deployment of some 2,000 federal agents in the Twin Cities area – an agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, while she sat unarmed in her car. Good, a local writer and mother, was killed only blocks from her home under circumstances that remain hotly disputed. Federal authorities, including President Trump, were quick to claim the agent acted in self-defense, alleging that Good tried to run him over. But multiple eyewitnesses and journalists have contested the official story, and even the Minneapolis mayor bluntly told ICE to “get out” of the city. In fact, Minnesota’s attorney general, Keith Ellison, and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar maintain that Good had been present merely as a legal observer of the ICE raid – exercising her civic right to watch and document law enforcement – when she was gunned down. Her death, the ninth shooting by ICE in a few months, has sparked outrage and mass protests in Minneapolis and beyond. Many see this tragedy as the latest example of American rights being violated under the guise of enforcement, raising urgent questions about how citizens should respond when those tasked with upholding the law commit injustices.

Civil Disobedience and Moral Law

The United States has a proud tradition of dissent against unjust authority. From the Boston Tea Party to the Civil Rights Movement, Americans have often engaged in civil disobedience – the refusal to comply with certain laws or commands – to uphold higher principles of justice. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote from his Birmingham jail cell, “one has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” In other words, blind obedience is not a virtue when the law itself becomes a tool of oppression. The Constitution guarantees us rights to free speech, peaceful assembly, and petitioning the government; these are the lawful avenues to resist and seek redress when authorities overstep. Yet, when even these rights are trampled – for example, if peaceful protesters and observers like Good are met with violence – citizens face a dilemma. Do we simply comply and stay silent, or do we take a stand, even if that means breaking minor rules or defying authorities’ commands? American history and conscience lean toward the latter. Indeed, civil rights advocates argue that the current administration has “normalized the erosion of constitutional rights, framing brutality as enforcement and accountability as weakness.” Such a climate makes prophetic resistance not only permissible but necessary: a stance where moral truth is valued above unjust regulations.

A Prophetic Mandate to Resist

This idea of standing up to injustice is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings as well. The Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) consistently urge believers to resist oppression and side with the oppressed. The Quran asks rhetorically, “And what is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah and for the oppressed – men, women, and children – who cry out: ‘Our Lord! Rescue us from this town of wrongdoers...’?” Standing up for the vulnerable is portrayed as a God-given duty. Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad emphasized active opposition to wrongdoing. He said, “Whoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he is not able, then with his tongue; and if he is not able, then with his heart – and that is the weakest of faith.” In other words, do something when you see injustice – physical action if possible, speaking out at minimum, and at the very least feeling the moral outrage internally. Doing nothing is not an option in the prophetic model.

Perhaps most striking is a famous hadith about speaking truth to power. When asked what the best form of struggle (jihad) is, the Prophet replied: “The best jihad is a word of truth in front of a tyrannical ruler.” This elevates non-violent resistance – telling the hard truth to an oppressive authority – as a supreme act of faith and courage. Throughout Islamic history, we see examples of this prophetic resistance: Prophet Moses confronted the tyranny of Pharaoh armed only with God’s words; early Muslims in Mecca endured persecution rather than bow to idol worship; the Prophet’s grandson Husayn ibn Ali stood against a corrupt ruler, sacrificing his life at Karbala rather than legitimize injustice. These stories, beloved in the Muslim tradition, all teach that resisting oppression is not an act of sedition, but a fulfillment of one’s moral and spiritual duty. Faith is not meant to be a passive affair – it calls believers to “enjoin the good and forbid the evil,” even when doing so is dangerous or unpopular.

Balancing Resistance and Responsibility

How, then, do we translate these principles into action as citizens? Both American law and Islamic ethics provide guidance on responsible resistance. First, any form of protest or resistance must strive to uphold justice rather than descend into chaos. The Quran cautions believers: “O you who believe! Be steadfast in justice... and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.” This means that even as we oppose abusive agents or unjust laws, we must not become unjust ourselves. Peaceful protests, legal challenges, vigils, and speaking truth to officials are all morally sound methods of resistance. What crosses the line is when activism turns into the very oppression or violence we initially stood against. If a protester were to harm innocent people or spread hate, that activism has gone too far – betraying the cause of justice. Both our faith and democratic values call us to a higher standard: to resist without rancor and to fight injustice without abandoning fairness. We are reminded that a good end cannot justify evil means.

At the same time, we have a responsibility toward our fellow citizens – both those facing oppression and even those perpetrating it. The Prophet Muhammad instructed, “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed.” When his companions, puzzled, asked how one could help an oppressor, he answered: “By preventing him from oppressing others.” This profound teaching aligns perfectly with civic duty. It means we should help victims of injustice, but also intervene to stop the wrongdoing of police or officials – because in doing so, we actually help save the soul of our society (and perhaps even the oppressor from further guilt). In practical terms, our duty as citizens is to hold our government and law enforcement accountable. We owe loyalty not to any agency or leader unconditionally, but to the principles of justice and mercy. When authorities respect those principles, we support them; when they violate them, we must lawfully oppose them. That could mean voting out officials who enable abuses, supporting lawsuits against unconstitutional practices, volunteering as legal observers, or simply recording an incident on your phone. It definitely means speaking up – at city council meetings, in the media, in our workplaces and mosques – to say this is not acceptable in our America.

Conclusion: Answering the Call

Moments like the killing of Renee Good serve as a test of our collective character. It is easy to feel intimidated when armed agents patrol our neighborhoods or cynical when leaders dismiss a grieving community. But our silence in the face of tyranny makes us complicit. The Prophet warned that when people witness oppression and fail to oppose it, they invite divine wrath upon all. History, too, warns us: as one famous saying goes, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” We cannot afford that neutrality. Prophetic resistance calls each of us – Muslim or otherwise – to find the courage of our convictions. It calls us to stand up, as our faith and conscience demand, before more lives are lost and more rights trampled. This doesn’t mean resorting to violence or anarchy; it means moral, creative, and persistent non-cooperation with injustice. Each of us has a role in building the just society we envision. Renee Good’s death is a tragic loss, but it must not be in vain. Let it ignite in us the kind of prophetic resistance that heals our nation: resistance rooted in love, justice, and unshakeable hope for a better tomorrow. The prophets would expect no less from us, and future generations will ask what we did in this moment. It’s our duty to answer that call – with both our words and our deeds.
