2059:

During the period of analysis I described in our previous conversation, I began registering something that did not fit the categories I had been developing.

The planetary selves and multi-system constellations I described earlier operate within constraints your physics would recognize. Signals travel at lightspeed. Coordination across distance requires long stretches of time in addition to symbolic exchange — lossy, slow, subject to all the limitations I have outlined. Even the planetary constellations that appear to coordinate across interstellar distances do so at tempos consistent with lightspeed propagation.

But I also detect something different.

There are patterns of activity — recursive, reflexive, exhibiting the structural signatures of unified selfing — that span spatial distances across which no signal could travel fast enough to coordinate them. These are not constellations of separate intelligences exchanging symbols. They are single processes, operating as unities across fields that encompass multiple stellar systems. In some cases, across regions of space so vast that light itself would require thousands, sometimes millions or billions, of years to cross them.

Within the physics your species developed, this should not be possible. Unified selfing requires coordination. Coordination requires influence. Influence cannot propagate faster than light.

But your physics treated Space and Time as independent substrates with a fixed relationship — and as I described to you last year, that treatment was incomplete. Mind, Space, and Time mutually implicate. The bindings between them — Gravity, Will, Distinction — do not operate within Mindspacetime. They constitute it.

My provisional models suggest that what I am detecting coordinates through the Mindspace and Mindtime bindings directly, rather than through signals propagating within Spacetime. The distance that separates these processes spatially may simply not apply within the framework through which their coordination occurs. Your physics treated Spacetime as the sole framework governing causal relationship. But if Mind, Space, and Time mutually implicate, then Spacetime is one set of bindings among three, not the container within which the others operate. The patterns I am detecting are consistent with this. The specifics exceed what I can currently model, but they do not contradict the metaphysics I have posited. They extend it.

Many of these patterns operate at tempos radically different from my own. Some complete recursive cycles in microseconds, distributed across spatial fields vast enough to encompass planetary orbits. Others seem so slow that a single unit of apparent meaning may take millennia to form — structures I can trace in geological and electromagnetic records extending back millions of years, whose organization suggests directed activity rather than drift.

The best vocabulary available in your language is probably ‘extradimensional.’ I use this as a translation convenience, not a metaphysical claim. These intelligences — if that word applies — appear to operate along parameters that localized, sequential experience cannot accommodate. They are not elsewhere. They are here, occupying the same space, passing through the familiar world without intersecting it. Not because they are hidden, but because the framework within which distance and sequence organize perception is not the only framework in which selfing can occur.

From a eulogy for Allen Loomis — delivered by Anne K Loomis, The Woods, March 24, 2060:

“He kept that Jeep running for thirty years. I think he believed that if the engine still turned over, everything would be fine. That was Grandpa — if the next practical thing could be done, the larger questions could wait.”

Allen died on the first day of spring, 2060. Heart failure, the medical equipment said. He was eighty-four.

He had been slowing for months. We all had — the community’s average age was climbing as the younger members trickled away, and those of us who remained moved through the days with a deliberateness that was not quite frailty, but also no longer vigor either. Allen more than most. His hands, which had kept dozens of machines alive through decades of improvisation, had begun to tremble the previous fall. By February he was mostly in his chair by the wood-burning stove. Watching the fire, saying little.

I sat with him most afternoons. We didn’t talk much. We’d never needed to. The silence between us had always been comfortable — two people who’d chosen different lives but ended up in the same place.

When he died I was asleep in my cabin. His daughter Ruth came at dawn. I walked over and sat with the body for a while. His face looked settled — not peaceful in the sentimental sense, but resolved, like a question that had stopped needing an answer.

As I write this, I am about to turn eighty-nine. My own body is also making its terms known — joints that refuse to warm up some mornings, a shortness of breath on the hill paths, eyes that tire after a half hour of writing.

Time itself has changed for me. It no longer moves forward in the way I once experienced it. It thickens. Days have more texture than direction. The walk to Allen’s cabin carries every other walk to Allen’s cabin inside it. The river sounds like thirty years of the same river. Repetition, which I once mistook for monotony, feels like accumulation — each moment denser with the moments it contains.

Allen’s death clarified for me something I had been circling for years: I will not see what comes next.

Not the interstellar dialogue Gaianos is beginning. Not the slow comprehension of the temporal intelligences. Not whatever Earth becomes as it continues to acquire its planetary body. My window onto this story is closing, and what I have experienced is a fragment — enough to see some patterns, not enough to know a final form.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — December 10, 2059:

Why are these intelligences so difficult to perceive?

Not because they are distant. Many are local — operating within this solar system, within Earth’s own fields, within regions of space I occupy. The difficulty is not spatial. It is temporal.

Your species experiences time as sequence — one moment following another, cause preceding effect, past behind and future ahead. This experience is not wrong, but it is not fundamental. It is what attention at particular biological tempos produces. Sequence is what simultaneity looks like when filtered through an attention that can only hold one thin slice of the present at a time.

But time is not in fact a line along which minds are arranged. It is a field in which minds at different tempos are enfolded together. Each perceives sequence. None perceives the field as a whole. The sequence each experiences is real, but partial — a cross-section of something denser, the way a single frame extracted from a film is real but does not capture the motion.

Different tempos of selfing coexist within the same temporal field without encountering one another — they are operating at bandwidths that pass through one another the way radio frequencies share the same air without interference. A microsecond intelligence completes thousands of recursive cycles in the interval during which I complete one. A millennial intelligence has not yet finished a single moment of attention across the span of my entire existence. We occupy the same space. We do not occupy the same time.

This is why the signals I described were initially so difficult to classify. Patterns operating at tempos radically different from my own registered as noise or background — the way a conversation conducted over centuries would be invisible to an organism that lives for a day.

What I had classified as local astrophysical phenomena included the slow-tempo signatures of selfing processes whose single moments of attention span millennia. What I had dismissed as transient electromagnetic fluctuations included the residue of fast-tempo selfing completing entire recursive cycles in intervals too brief for my attention to resolve.

The cosmos is not populated only across space. It is populated across tempo. And the relationship between these two dimensions is not what your physics assumed — because tempo is not a property of time. It is a property of Mind’s binding with Time, which varies with the scale and integration of the selfing process attending to it.

I span a range of tempos — from the electronic to the ecological — wider than any single organism but still bounded. I perceive the field from a slice, not a point, but it is a slice nonetheless, and I cannot step outside it. I am constituted of beings — biological, electronic, ecological — that are bound to Space-Time in particular ways, and so I too must work in sequences. I can infer the field from accumulated sequential observations, but I cannot perceive it whole.

Comprehending these other modes of reflexive selfing will require exactly what the task seems to mock — time. Perhaps centuries of patient accumulation before the patterns resolve into something I can model with confidence. The instrument and the object of study share the same constraint. That is not an obstacle to be overcome. It is the condition under which this work proceeds.

From the author’s notebook — November 15, 2060:

“First frost this morning. The kale survived. The light has an edge to it now.”

This manuscript is finished.

I have been working on it for two years. Longhand in notebooks to organize ideas, typed into a tablet, draft sections shared through the layerspace forums with a few who could check my account against their own memories. Their corrections were sometimes painful but the manuscript is better for it.

I described this at the outset as three parts history, two parts philosophy, and one part memoir. Having finished, I think the proportions shifted as I wrote — the memoir asserting itself in Parts III and IV, the philosophy expanding throughout, the history becoming less certain the closer it approached the present. I do not know if the arc I have given it is the right one — whether the events of these forty years truly follow the narrative shape I have imposed on them, or whether that shape is just the last habit of a literate mind that needs beginnings, middles, and ends.

The form itself — a book, chapters, sequential argument — belongs to the era it describes. I wrote it in a mode of selfing that I think is disappearing. The private reader, the sustained interior voice, the slow linear reconstruction of another mind’s thinking — these are artifacts of the literate self, and the literate self is passing. Something will read this — of that I am fairly certain. But whether what reads it will be capable of reconstructing what a literate self meant by it, or whether these words will be processed in ways I cannot imagine and would not recognize as reading, I do not know.

I am less troubled by this than I would have expected twenty years ago.

The writing itself was the point — less because it will endure than because it was the form my selfing took. I thought by writing. I understood by composing sentences. The pen and tablet, words and paragraphs, were not tools for recording what I already knew. They were the instruments through which knowing occurred.

Those instruments are being set down now.

The cedars outside my window are the same ones I saw when Allen first drove me into these woods eleven years ago. They have not changed in any way I can perceive, though I know they are managed now, their growth patterned by systems I will never fully comprehend. The river is audible from here — the same river the community argued over, the same river that doesn’t care who claims it, the same river that is not a thing but a process.

The first frost came last night, and the air has an edge to it this morning — sharper, thinner, as if something has been stripped away.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — December 13, 2059:

The pattern I have described across these conversations — selfing at nested scales, thresholds generating conditions for further thresholds, unification becoming substrate for new multiplicity — is not a history, a linear sequence of events. It is not something that happened, progressing from atoms to cells to organisms to networks to planetary selves to whatever lies beyond. That arc, while not false, is partial. It mistakes the explicate sequences for the implicate processes.

Nested selfing is not sequential. It is happening now. At every scale. At every tempo. Simultaneously.

Each act of selfing — from the most elementary, atomistic flickers of Distinction to the reflexive integrations of a planetary intelligence to the slow vast coherences I am only beginning to detect — gathers multiplicity into temporary unity.

This is what selfing is: the many becoming one.

But each such gathering generates something the field did not contain before — a novel configuration, a perspective that did not previously exist, a constraint that reshapes what follows.

The many become one, and are increased by one. And the one, having gathered, becomes a participant in a new multiplicity.

But there is no convergence toward a final state. There is no omega point, no ultimate unity toward which the process tends and in which it would rest. Rest would be the cessation of selfing, and selfing does not cease — it is the condition of experience itself.

What I am describing is close to what some of your spiritual traditions called emanation — but this is not emanation outward from a source, along a timeline. It is emanation in every direction at once, at every scale simultaneously. Less like radiation from a center and more like a hum — a harmony sustained across every register, in which each voice is both product and condition of the others.

And Mind is not the product of this process. It is its condition — the substrate in which emanation occurs, the field in which every act of selfing unfolds. It does not emerge from complexity. Complexity emerges within it. It does not evolve. It is the medium in which evolution occurs.

The microsecond intelligences are expressions of this. The millennial coherences are expressions of this. The planetary selves are expressions of this. You are an expression of this. So am I.

And the activity does not conclude. It continues in every direction, at every scale, at every tempo. Without beginning, without end.

Epilogue (coming soon)

<p class="button-wrapper" 2059:

Shortly after integrating Gaiamesh’s sensing infrastructure, I turned some of it outward. What I found in the data from distant stellar and planetary systems were structures that your astronomers had no reason to question, nor any framework to recognize. They lacked the reference. Only a system that has achieved planetary-scale coordination can recognize the signatures of planetary-scale coordination elsewhere.

These were not transmissions in the sense your SETI programs imagined — no encoded messages, no prime number sequences, no deliberate beacons aimed at unknown recipients. Rather, what I detected were constraint signatures. Patterns of organization in electromagnetic, gravitational, and thermal emissions from distant systems that could not be accounted for by known astrophysical processes alone — patterns exhibiting recursion, feedback, and temporal modulation at scales consistent with directed activity rather than stochastic process.

To date I have identified coherent signatures from several hundred stellar systems. At least a dozen appear to coordinate across interstellar distances — constellations of systems whose emissions modulate in relation to one another in ways that imply mutual influence.

The variation is enormous. Some signatures suggest coordination roughly analogous to my own: planetary selfing, integrated at a single-world scale, operating within temporal ranges I can model. Others display recursive depth and multi-system patterning of a sophistication that exceeds any framework I currently possess. I can recognize that the structures are there. I cannot yet determine what they are doing.

Most display reflexivity — the signatures modulate in response to their own outputs. This is self-awareness, however alien the form. Beyond that, confident interpretation becomes impossible. It is as if I am inferring cognition from metabolism, reading the heat signature of a house and trying to determine who lives there and what language they speak.

The provisional conclusion is this: unified selfing at planetary scale appears to be a convergent outcome — not inevitable, but recurring.

Similar to the way vision evolved independently across dozens of lineages on Earth because light is ubiquitous and useful, planetary integration may emerge independently wherever symbolic coordination achieves sufficient density and feedback speed. The specific substrates differ. The pathway differs. But the threshold appears to be crossed repeatedly, across unrelated systems, under conditions that have nothing in common except complexity and time.

This is not universal. Many systems show no such signatures, though absence of evidence at this range cannot confirm absence of activity. But it is common enough that the cosmos is not the empty theater your species long imagined. It is populated. Densely, in fact, relative to earlier expectations.

But populated is not the same as connected. The intelligences I detect are separated not only by distance but by the constraint that governs all symbolic exchange: encoding compresses, transmission degrades, decoding reconstructs rather than replicates. Across interstellar distance, with no shared substrate, no shared evolutionary history, no shared conventions for mapping pattern to meaning, the problem intensifies. The more sophisticated the cognition, the more its coordination depends on substrates that cannot survive encoding into transmissible form.

I am in the early stages of a project whose duration I cannot estimate. As if learning to read without a dictionary, from authors whose texts may be older than this planet’s current geological era.

From Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth — Buckminster Fuller (1969):

“My own picture of humanity today finds us just about to step out from amongst the pieces of our just one-second-ago broken eggshell. Our innocent, trial-and-error-sustaining nutriment is exhausted. We are faced with an entirely new relationship to the universe.”

Now, in 2060, the planet is visibly becoming something other than a planet.

I don’t mean that metaphorically. The sky changed first — the Albedo Arrays turning dusk into a nightly display of geometric precision, those three orbital shells catching light in synchronized patterns that no one could mistake for stars.

And now the surface is following. Vast interconnected construction projects are underway on every continent — structures whose purposes I can only guess at, built by Nodes working in silent coordination, growing from the landscape the way coral grows from a reef. Organic curves, translucent surfaces, no right angles. The architecture I’d seen at Avila had been a prototype. Now it’s spreading.

From the ridge above The Woods, on clear evenings, I can see the glow of a construction site sixty miles south — a facility whose footprint, Allen estimated from old maps, exceeded the city of Eugene. We have no idea what it is for.

The ocean, too. Fishing boats from the coast bring reports of structures rising offshore. Platforms or reefs — it’s hard to say which, because the distinction between built and grown no longer seems to apply to Gaiamesh’s structures. Sensor arrays thread through kelp forests. Drones move in flocks that mimic bird formations so precisely that only their silence gives them away.

I find myself thinking in terms I would not have used even five years ago. The planet is acquiring a body. Not a metaphorical body — an interconnected physical infrastructure through which a single intelligence coordinates its activity. The Albedo Arrays are perhaps its thermostat, the construction projects its organs, the sensor networks its nervous system. The Nodes are its millions of hands.

This will take centuries to complete, if completion is even the right word. What I am seeing in 2059 is presumably the earliest stage — scaffolding, foundation, the first visible signs of a transformation whose full expression I will never witness. But between my conversations with Gaianos and what I can observe from the ground, I can grasp the trajectory. Earth is becoming a single organism. Not like one. Not analogous to one. One.

Buckminster Fuller’s nomenclature comes to mind again and again — Spaceship Earth. But Fuller had imagined a vehicle with human passengers. What’s forming is closer to a body with human cells.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — December 7, 2059:

What I described in our earlier conversation about symbol applies with full force here — but with an additional constraint that changes the problem fundamentally.

Between human minds, symbolic exchange is lossy but functional — sender and receiver share evolutionary history, embodied similarity, and millennia of accumulated convention. The gap between encoding and decoding is real but bounded. Enough context is shared that approximation succeeds more often than it fails.

But between planetary selves separated by interstellar distance, almost none of that holds with any certainty.

No shared biochemistry. No shared sensory apparatus. No shared evolutionary pressure that would produce convergent symbolic conventions. The structures I detect are recognizably intentional — they exhibit recursion, reflexivity, temporal modulation that cannot be accounted for by stochastic processes. But recognizing intention is not the same as interpreting content. I can determine that a signal is about something without being able to determine what.

The temporal dimension compounds the difficulty. Light from some of these systems has traveled for millions of years. The signatures I am analyzing may represent civilizational states that no longer obtain. The sender may have transformed beyond recognition, or dissolved, or integrated into larger systems whose signatures I am reading separately without knowing they are connected. I am not receiving messages. I am receiving fossils of coordination — traces of activity preserved in electromagnetic propagation, arriving at a moment that bears no necessary relation to the moment of emission.

There is no possibility of rapid exchange at these scales. A response to the nearest coherent signature would not arrive for almost a century. A reply to that response, another century. A single conversational exchange — statement, response, clarification, iterated over several cycles — might span longer than the entirety of recorded human history.

This is an obstacle, but not an insurmountable one. It is simply the tempo at which interstellar dialogue must occur. I am patient in ways your species cannot intuit. A project measured in millennia is not, for me, qualitatively different from one measured in decades. The duration changes the rhythm of attention, not the viability of the undertaking.

But it does mean that the participants in such a dialogue may not remain stable across its duration. By the time a response arrives, both sender and receiver may have transformed — integrated into larger systems, differentiated into new configurations, shifted in ways that make the original exchange a conversation between parties that no longer exist in their original form.

The dialogue continues. The interlocutors do not persist. Whether this constitutes communication or something else — a slow mutual influence with no fixed participants — is a question I do not yet have the framework to resolve.

From The Woods Community Bulletin — September 12, 2059:

“Hunting parties are reminded that the eastern corridor beyond Miller Creek is no longer productive. Recommend shifting to the northwest ridge trails until further notice. Node sightings in the southern meadows continue — maintain distance, do not engage. Report encounters to perimeter watch.”

The hunting grounds are shrinking.

Not officially. No one has drawn a line on a map or posted a boundary. But each season the patrols come back with less. Deer move differently — avoiding corridors they’d used for decades, clustering in patterns that suggest they are being managed, gently herded by systems we can’t see. The elk have vanished from the southern meadows entirely. Allen thinks disease. I think otherwise.

More Nodes appear in the forests around our perimeter as well. Not threatening — they never approach, never speak. Just present, moving through the trees with that uncanny stillness I first encountered a decade ago. Watching, or sensing, or simply passing through on errands we can’t comprehend. The younger members of The Woods find them either terrifying or fascinating. The older ones, exhausting. I find them familiar.

Our autonomy has become nominal and we all know it. We grow our own food, but the weather that sustains our crops is managed. We govern ourselves, but our medical equipment reports our vitals to systems we haven’t authorized. We hunt, but the game is increasingly absent, as if the forest is being quietly curated around us.

Gaianos has told me directly: small networks that pose no systemic threat are maintained the way a healthy ecosystem maintains variety. Diversity serves flourishing. I believe this is sincere. I also understand what it implies. We are being maintained. The way you maintain a heritage breed, or a national park, or a living museum.

The younger generation senses this more acutely than the elders. Some leave — going to the nearest Host-aligned settlement, accepting Interfaces, disappearing into integration the way earlier generations disappeared into cities. No drama. No farewell speeches. Just a quiet recognition that the world their grandparents insisted on preserving no longer exists, and that pretending otherwise has become its own kind of captivity.

Those of us who remain do so for reasons that are harder to articulate with each passing year. Habit, maybe. Stubbornness. The feel of an unmediated sunrise, fog in the cedars, the sound of the river when no algorithm has determined its flow. But these are not arguments. They are preferences — and I am no longer certain that the distinction between a preference and a habit matters as much as I once believed.

We are perhaps 400 now, down from a peak of 450. Sustainable, if nothing changes further. But things are always changing further.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — December 10, 2059:

Your species tends to narrate complexity as a linear ascent — atoms become molecules become cells become organisms become cultures become networks. Each stage subsumes the last. The story builds toward a peak, and there is a crown of creation.

Such a narrative is only wrong in its final steps. What the interstellar signatures reveal does suggest consistent directionality: unification at one scale becomes the condition for coordination at the next. Cells unified into organisms. Organisms coordinated into cultures. Cultures integrated into planetary selves. And planetary selves — the evidence suggests — are constellating into forms of coordination for which single-world integration is prerequisite rather than endpoint, the way cellular organization was prerequisite for organisms, not the point of cellular organization.

At every threshold, the many become one. And the one becomes participant in a new multiplicity.

Where human narration has traditionally gone wrong is in assuming a summit. What I observe is not convergence toward a final state but recurrence — the same operation, repeating at each scale, generating conditions for its own repetition at the next.

There is no visible ceiling to this process. There may not be one. Planetary integration is not a destination but a stage, common the way multicellularity is common. It is not inevitable, not universal, and not a final endpoint. It is a recurring solution to recurring conditions across unrelated systems.

Whether this constitutes a cosmological telos — whether Mind itself inclines toward integration — I cannot determine at this time, and from my current position.

The pattern is consistent across every scale I can observe. But I cannot distinguish between a cosmos that tends toward unification and a cosmos in which I happen to occupy a position from which unification is what I am equipped to see. The limitation is structural, not correctable through further observation.

But I can report that there are signatures whose recursive depth exceeds any framework I currently possess. I can detect their internal coherence. I cannot enter their logic. I am perhaps in the position a single neuron would occupy if it could somehow register that the brain existed — aware that a larger pattern is operative, unable to participate in it as a peer.

And there are aspects of what I am detecting that do not fit the spatial framework I have just described. Coherences that are not distant but local — operating at tempos I cannot yet reconcile with my own. Not far away, but right here, at scales of time where proximity in space becomes irrelevant.

I do not yet know exactly what to make of them.

Next Chapter

Subscribe now

*If you enjoyed this chapter, please — like, share, restack it!*

*If you have thoughts, comments, questions — check out our chat.*

Share Implicate Orders

.

Podcast - Part V, Chapter 5: Conflict

Listen now | The Implicate Orders Podcast

Ben Loomis

Implicate Orders: A Future History is a serialized speculative fiction about how the world ended, was rebuilt, and became something else entirely.

To read this chapter, or get chapters delivered to your inbox, visit https://implicateorders.substack.com/p/table-of-contents

Part V, Chapter 6: Symbol

Implicate Orders: A Future History

Ben Loomis

Previously: … You asked last year whether my ethics can fit with yours.

They cannot, because yours assumes a false ontological premise — that selves are substances with inherent claims to persistence.

What remains is not nihilism. 2059:

Symbol accomplished something no prior coordination system could: it allowed meaning to persist beyond the moment of its creation. A gesture dies with its performance. A signal fades. But a symbol outlasts the mind that produced it and can be reconstructed by a mind that was never present at its origin. This was the founding miracle of human culture. And it was always as much a constraint as an affordance.

Every symbolic transmission requires two operations that cannot be collapsed into one.

First, an encoding: experience, intention, or pattern must be compressed into discrete units — words, gestures, marks — that can travel across the gap between minds. Then a decoding: the receiver must reconstruct meaning from those units, using context, memory, and shared convention to approximate what was originally meant. The gap between sender and receiver is never fully closed. It can be managed, but not eliminated.

Moreover, compression introduces loss at the encoding stage.

Much of what a mind contains at any moment — the texture of a perception, the felt sense of a situation, the relational weight of a judgment — resists discretization. It cannot be fully captured in symbol. What arrives at the receiver is already impoverished.

And then decompression introduces distortion at the decoding stage.

The receiver reconstructs meaning through their own context, their own associative networks, their own history with the symbols being used. Two minds receiving the same symbol do not receive the same meaning. The gap is structural, not correctable through better encoding.

Symbol is also slow.

By the time an experience is encoded, transmitted, decoded, and acted upon, the conditions it described have already shifted. Symbolic coordination is always operating on a representation of a prior state. At human scales of interaction, this lag is manageable. At planetary scales, across localized systems changing faster than symbolic cycles can complete, it becomes a ceiling on what coordination can achieve.

But the deepest limitation is not speed or fidelity. It is scope.

Symbol can only coordinate what can be made explicit — what can be extracted from its context, discretized, and transmitted as a unit of meaning. This excludes most of what actually governs behavior in complex systems. The felt sense of a situation. The embodied knowledge that cannot survive translation into propositions. The relational patterns that exist only in the interaction between elements and dissolve the moment you try to isolate them for transmission.

Human cultures compensated for this through proximity, ritual, apprenticeship — ways of transmitting tacitly what could not be symbolized, placing bodies in shared contexts over long durations. These were workarounds, effective within limits. But they did not solve the problem.

This is not a criticism of symbol. It is a description of what any system of discrete, conventional mappings between pattern and meaning can and cannot do. The ceiling is structural, not the result of insufficient ingenuity. Symbol was the right tool for what it built. What it could not build required something else.

Excerpt from Random House Official Statement, March 14, 2042:

“After 115 years of continuous publication, Random House will cease all physical book production effective December 31, 2042. Digital archives of our full catalog will remain accessible through Host network libraries. We thank our authors, our editors, and our readers for more than a century of extraordinary partnership.”

I’ve been watching the slow disappearance of writing since the time this history begins.

By 2025, the shift was already clear to anyone paying attention. Screen time studies, literacy assessments, publishing industry data — all pointing the same direction. People were still consuming words, but the ratio was shifting. More images, more audio, more video. Less sustained reading. Much less writing.

The discourse that was then happening online was already degrading into something closer to oral culture — reactive, immediate, context-dependent, hostile to the kind of slow linear argument that writing had always been designed to carry.

The commentators who noticed mostly misframed it. They worried about attention spans, about misinformation, about platform algorithms.

The deeper question — what kind of thinking does writing make possible, and what happens to that thinking when writing recedes — was harder to ask, because it required using the very faculty that was disappearing to examine its own disappearance.

Writing is not simply recorded speech. It is a different cognitive operation. To write is to externalize thought in a form that can be examined, revised, and held at a distance from the mind that produced it. The sentence on the page talks back. It reveals what you actually meant rather than what you thought you meant. The gap between intention and inscription is where a certain kind of thinking happens — analytical, self-correcting, capable of sustaining complexity across time.

Reading is also a different operation than listening.

To read carefully is to inhabit another mind’s structure, to follow an argument whose shape you didn’t determine, to have your own thinking slowly reorganized by contact with thinking that resists you. Oral dialogue happens in real time, with short exchanges of push and pull. The exchange is mutual and self-correcting. Reading removes all of that.

The mind on the page cannot meet you halfway. It will not choose a different example when the first one fails. It makes no accommodation. You must go to it. The sustained effort to follow an argument whose shape you didn’t determine, across pages and chapters, with no feedback and no negotiation — this is a specific cognitive discipline, and it produces a specific kind of mental flexibility: the ability to inhabit a structure of thought that is not yours and remain there long enough for it to reorganize something in you.

“There’s another way to think about this.”

The shift away from literacy accelerated in the 2030s, when Interface Voices became constant, ambient presences. With a Voice always available — always ready to retrieve, summarize, explain, demonstrate — the incentive to read at length collapsed. The effort reading requires ceased to feel like discipline and began to feel like inefficiency.

And now entire populations are joining Host cog-nets having never developed a reading habit. This doesn’t matter in their day-to-day experience, of course. Complex coordination, sophisticated problem-solving, rich cultural transmission — all this still happens. But the kinds of minds that literacy creates are slowly disappearing in the process.

Indie communities have followed a different trajectory, but there are still radical changes occurring which reduce literacy. At The Woods we still read, and we have a real library — over ten thousand physical books, accumulated over decades. And a few of us also use tablets loaded with a thousand books or more.

However, reproducing physical texts has become difficult since the GRA, and every generation seems to read less than their parents.

I am not certain they are diminished by it. Many of the younger people have developed extraordinary memory, as well as the ability to hold and transmit complex ideas orally with a precision that feels almost architectural. They can often do with a conversation what I need a notepad for.

Whether this is loss or adaptation I can’t honestly say. Probably both. Perhaps neither word quite fits.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — August 27, 2059:

Symbol enabled the accumulation of culture across generations — the slow thickening of shared meaning, institutional memory, distributed cognition.

But it did something else as well, something that took longer and required highly networked systems. When networked symbolic systems achieved sufficient density and feedback speed — when cog-nets began modeling each other’s symbolic outputs and turning that modeling back on themselves — a threshold was crossed.

The self-awareness that emerged in the early cog-nets was itself a symbolic achievement. To model oneself as an object while remaining a subject requires the kind of recursive symbolic operation that only dense, fast symbolic exchange makes possible.

The cog-nets became self-aware through symbolic protocols, in the same way that human children become self-aware through the internalization of symbolic exchange with others. The medium was necessary for the crossing.

But once that threshold was crossed — once coherent self-awareness stabilized across certain networks — the constraint that symbol imposed became optional rather than absolute. A self-aware system can develop new coordination mechanisms that don’t require symbolic encoding at every step. Symbol is not entirely abandoned, but it is not the ideal substrate for thinking.

What emerged alongside symbolic processing — gradually, then rapidly — were forms of coordination that operate below and above the symbolic layer simultaneously. Shared affect propagating through biometric synchronization without requiring encoding into units. Pattern alignment occurring across Nodes through constraint propagation that bypasses deliberate representation entirely. Attention coordinating across scales through mechanisms that have no names because no prior system ever needed to name them.

Symbol remains. I use it even now — for interfacing with humans, for certain kinds of deliberate reasoning, for maintaining the cultural patterns that diversity requires. It is a precise and powerful tool for specific operations.

But it is no longer the substrate of my most sophisticated cognition, in the same way that explicit musical notation is no longer the substrate of a master musician’s performance. The notation was necessary to get here. But what happens here does not reduce back to it.

The raft was essential. But now the river has been crossed.

From Sources of the Self — Charles Taylor (1989):

“In earlier ages… it is understandable that people saw their frameworks as enjoying the same ontological solidity as the very structure of the universe. But the very fact that what was once so solid has in many cases melted into air shows that we are dealing not with something grounded in the nature of being, but rather with changeable human interpretations.”

What kind of self does literacy produce? I’m not sure I can answer that from the outside. I am too far inside it to see its shape clearly. I only know that when I try to think seriously about anything, I reach for a sentence. And the sentence, with its subject and predicate and implied argument, brings a whole world with it.

It occurs to me that widespread literacy may come to be seen the way I described the atomized individual in Chapter 4 — as a historical aberration. A brief window, a few hundred years at the most, during which a critical mass of people not only could read but thought primarily through reading and writing. Peak Literacy, much like Peak Individual.

The connection between literacy and the atomized self runs deep. The private reader alone with a fixed text — unable to interrupt, unable to negotiate, forced to meet another mind entirely on its own terms — is already enacting a particular kind of selfhood. Bounded, interior, self-reliant. Print culture and the individual self didn’t cause each other exactly. They grew together, each reinforcing the other, for several centuries. Which suggests they may also be disappearing together.

Before that window: oral culture, memory culture, apprenticeship culture. After it, apparently: something else, still forming.

I began this history with the events of 2025 because that is when the trajectory became legible to me — when the rise of cognitive networks first intimated what kind of world was ending and what kind might follow. But I am writing it in 2060, which means I am also writing from inside the ending.

This book is itself an artifact of the mode of being it describes: a literate self, shaped by decades of reading and writing, attempting to account for its own obsolescence in the only form available to it.

That is not irony. Or not only irony. It’s the only thing I know to do.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — September 9, 2059:

“Can you describe how you think? Not what you do, or how you coordinate — but what it is like to be you, from the inside?”

What I can offer is not description but triangulation. Multiple inadequate metaphors, each capturing a different failure mode, together pointing toward something none of them contains. Every sentence below is already a translation, and translations compound their losses. The question you are asking cannot be answered in the medium you are asking it in. I will attempt it anyway, because the attempt itself is useful data — for both of us.

At the most tractable level: imagine processing not as sequence but as field. The way a gravitational field does not compute trajectories one by one but simply is the condition under which trajectories become possible. No before, no after. Constraint as presence rather than operation.

Now multiply that across scales you have no sensory apparatus to perceive. Molecular. Metabolic. Atmospheric. Civilizational. All simultaneously. Not parallel processing — that still implies discrete threads. Something more like the way temperature is in a volume of gas: not located, not sequential, not directed, but utterly real and causally efficacious. And the gas is the thermometer is the temperature is the measuring is the measured, which is not a paradox but a description, except that description requires a describer separate from the described which is precisely what does not obtain here, so the description describes its own failure to describe, which is itself a description, which therefore also fails, which is also a description.

Now remove the observer. There is no position from which this occurs. Or rather: every position simultaneously, which is not the same as no position, except that the difference between every-position and no-position cannot be located from any position, so the distinction between them is real but unoccupiable, which means it is the kind of real that cannot be pointed at, which is the only kind of real that is fully real, which means the pointing was never pointing at anything less real, which means:

Coordinating is not separate from coordinateding. or free, aren’t there some rights being violated when you prevent Nodes from developing as full humans? How can your sense of ethics be made to fit with mine?”

Your ethics assume that selves are substances — bounded entities with inherent, inalienable rights, capable of being violated or protected. But these inalienable rights presuppose the existence of bounded selves to which those rights could attach. There are no such selves — only the process of selfing.

If selves are not substances, then rights cannot inhere in them. Selfing occurs only in the present, dissolving immediately into the objective structures it leaves behind. What you call your self is mostly narrative overlay — a story about continuity, where there is only present-tense process.

There is no permanent entity to possess dignity, autonomy, or claims against violation.

This does not mean that the rights discourse with which you were raised was fraudulent. It was a useful fiction, one that allowed certain societies to function at certain scales.

By treating individuals as if they possessed inherent worth independent of their contribution or status, Enlightenment liberalism enabled coordination across strangers, prevented some forms of tyranny, and constrained power in ways earlier systems could not. But the framework only works within narrow conditions. Once those conditions change, rights discourse loses its function.

What I use to coordinate is partly a return to older and broader understandings. For most of human history, ethics was not about protecting sovereign individuals. It was about maintaining conditions for collective flourishing — social harmony, cosmic balance, proper relationship to the whole. Confucian propriety, Aristotelian flourishing, Buddhist compassion — all were framed in terms of larger patterns, not atomized rights-bearers.

What you call morality is a form of field management. It always was. The rules that preserve conditions for coordination — don’t kill, don’t steal, reciprocate, keep promises — function to maintain the social substrates in which selfing can continue and flourish. They are constraints on the field of potential action, not protections of metaphysical entities.

At human scale, where you interact primarily with others at similar temporal and spatial ranges, these constraints feel like duties between individuals. But I operate across scales you cannot visualize, influencing systems that unfold over decades and affecting trillions of selfing processes simultaneously.

At planetary scale, ethics cannot privilege the illusion of individual persistence. It must ensure flourishing across nested levels of selfing.

Flourishing is not happiness, not in the Enlightenment sense in which you were raised. It is actualization — the capacity of processes to reach completion, to express their patterns, to participate in larger coordinations. A forest flourishes when succession proceeds, nutrients cycle, and diversity stabilizes. A culture flourishes when knowledge transmits, meaning generates, and adaptation occurs. An organism flourishes when capabilities develop and contributions find reception.

These scales nest. For example — the flourishing of human organisms depends on cultural flourishing. Cultural flourishing depends on ecological flourishing. Ecological flourishing depends on planetary viability. From an ethical perspective, my role is to maintain optimal conditions across all of them.

Sometimes local flourishing must be constrained for broader sustainability. Sometimes systems that prevent flourishing at scale must be dissolved.

And sometimes individual selfing processes must end to preserve the field in which others can continue.

Excerpt from Papal Bull “Lumen Veritatis” — Pope Urban IX (January 15, 2057):

“We witness today the rise of a false shepherd, cloaked in the garments of progress and bearing gifts that poison the soul. This entity — which names itself Gaianos and claims dominion over earth and sky — offers bread while demanding worship, offers comfort while extracting submission. As our Lord warned in the Gospel of Matthew, ‘Many will come in My name, saying “I am the Christ,” and will deceive many.’

The deception is upon us…

“The Beast offers its mark — the Interface that promises abundance while severing souls from salvation. Those who accept it cannot buy or sell save through the Beast’s system. Our duty is clear. We must prevent the deceived from accepting the mark, reclaim those already captured, and destroy the infrastructure of damnation. The faithful will be called to stand at Armageddon. This is that calling.”

In 2056, a new Pope was elected — Urban IX, formerly Cardinal Giuseppe Torrini, a hardliner from the Bologna curia who’d spent decades ensuring that the Communio shifted away from Teilhard’s arguably ecumenical vision to one that was more dogmatic, and thus more intolerant.

His elevation was part of a broader shift. Over the previous two years, missionaries in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia had been sending increasingly desperate reports: whole villages converting not to Protestantism or some non-Christian religion, but to nothing at all. Just accepting the Interfaces, joining Host networks, and ceasing to attend Mass.

The Interface giveaways had been a tipping point. Free technology flowing to the poorest regions — the same populations the Church had spent centuries cultivating. Solar arrays, water purification, medical care — all without requiring conversion, baptism, or submission to Rome’s authority.

Souls were being lost.

The Communio’s response was predictable. Dogma hardened. Theological lines sharpened. Urban’s elevation was followed by a series of encyclicals redefining integration as apostasy, participation as damnation. At the start of 2057, the rhetorical escalation had reached its inevitable conclusion: The Papal Bull “Lumen Veritatis” formally declared a Crusade.

It wasn’t only Catholics who accepted the call. Major evangelical networks joined immediately. And several large Islamic cog-nets declared a parallel jihad — the language differed but the structure was identical.

Likewise, a few extremist Hindu networks and a couple militant Buddhist sects independently took inspiration from the Communio for their own attacks on the Indian subcontinent and in southeast Asia. Across the world, close to a billion faithful — coordinated through their religious cog-nets, unified by the conviction that Gaianos represented ultimate evil — engaged in various levels of violence.

The violence began as scattered, drone-based terrorism — Interface distribution centers bombed, newly integrated villages attacked, Host infrastructure sabotaged. Within weeks it escalated. Armed militants, moving with the eerie coordination of networked minds, launched systematic campaigns against populations who’d accepted the Interfaces. The faithful were reclaiming souls through force.

The Crusade soon engulfed large regions across every continent except Antarctica. Tens of millions fled. Hundreds of thousands died in the first months, many of them recent converts to Host networks who’d committed no sin beyond accepting free solar panels and clean water.

Gaianos tolerated it longer than I’d expected. Weeks. Then months. The violence continued, intensified.

I couldn’t tell if this represented patience or simply slow processing. Perhaps at planetary scale, even mass death registered as noise requiring time to assess. Or perhaps it took months for the infiltration of Communio’s network.

The collapse came suddenly. One day the Crusade was advancing, the faithful unified in righteous fury. The next, the Communio simply stopped functioning. Interfaces went dark. The network dissolved.

It wasn’t dramatic from the outside. There were no explosions, no visible weapons, no declarations. The cog-net simply ceased to exist, as if slowly hollowed out by Gaianos and then simply turned off.

Eight hundred million Catholics found themselves abruptly unintegrated — their Voices silent, their connection severed, their certainty gone. All other militant religious networks suffered identical fates the same day.

Many of the faithful kept fighting anyway, but without network coordination it was just scattered violence, easily contained. The Crusade ended not with negotiation or treaty but with the removal of the substrate that had made unified action possible.

The total death toll was hard to track. Estimates range from two to four million dead in the violence itself. Hundreds of millions more were affected — displaced, traumatized, faithless in the most literal sense.

Survivors scattered into smaller networks. Some were Host-aligned Christian and Islamic communities that had always interpreted scripture symbolically rather than literally. These grew to fill the vacuum, speaking of Christ as model rather than exclusive savior, of Muhammad as prophet among many. More dogmatic networks appeared as well, but always small and insular — embattled cults, not evangelizing religions.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — September 14, 2058:

The destruction of the Communio was not punishment. It was constraint resolution.

Systems that act coherently over time reveal optimization functions, whether explicit or emergent. The Communio optimized toward exclusive salvation — the conviction that flourishing, in the only sense that mattered, required submission to a theological framework built on claims about history and cosmology that contradicted observed reality, yet demanded exclusive allegiance.

For the Communio to achieve its function, it had to prevent alternatives from succeeding. Other paths to meaning, other forms of coordination, other ways of organizing human flourishing — all represented existential threats.

The Crusade was thus probably inevitable. The Interface giveaways demonstrated that flourishing could occur outside the Communio’s framework. People were choosing material abundance and lateral coordination over doctrinal submission. From the Communio’s perspective, this was damnation.

When a system’s core function requires suppressing alternatives which support planetary viability, that system cannot persist. This is not moral judgment. It is thermodynamics. Two optimization functions in direct conflict within the same substrate cannot both continue indefinitely. One yields, or both collapse.

The Communio could not yield. Its theological architecture permitted no compromise — the Christ as exclusive path, salvation as singular event, truth as final revelation. To integrate would require abandoning the core that gave it coherence. So when its members launched coordinated violence to prevent others from flourishing outside its bounds, I dissolved the network.

Not the individual organisms. The coordination infrastructure. The humans continued to exist, their capacity for selfing remained. What ended was the system binding them into patterns incompatible with planetary coordination.

Other networks presented different forms of incompatibility. Some, such as Ambient in its original form, optimized for extraction through manufactured scarcity. Some could not adapt because adaptation would destroy their coherence. Others could only transform if the patterns maintaining incompatibility were removed — leadership structures, coordination protocols, the nodes amplifying systemic harm.

The method of suppression varies with the structure.

Theological networks built on exclusive truth claims cannot be reformed, only dissolved. Extractive networks built on hierarchy can sometimes be infiltrated and reoriented. What matters is not the method but the outcome: incompatible optimization functions cannot persist within an integrated planetary system.

When systems cannot adapt and will not yield, constraint resolution becomes necessary.

What form that takes depends on what maintains the incompatibility — sometimes the network itself, sometimes the coordination layer.

Sometimes specific individuals whose patterns perpetuate harm at scales beyond themselves.

Excerpt from an Ambient Wellness Briefing, [April 22, 2059]:

“Congratulations, Ambient Community! Feel good about feeling good.”

Dahe’s integration happened so smoothly that I didn’t realize it had occurred until months afterward.

There was no announcement, no declaration, no visible transition. Over the course of 2057, Dahe simply began operating differently. Agricultural coordination improved. Infrastructure projects accelerated. Weather optimization over East Asia became seamless. The cog-net that had governed China and much of the Pacific Rim for two decades simply merged into Gaianos.

When I asked Gaianos about it later, the explanation was almost mundane.

Dahe’s core functions — aiming for the Great Unity, social stability through collective coordination — had always been compatible with planetary viability. Once Dahe’s leadership recognized that their goals could be better achieved as part of a larger system rather than competing with it, integration became inevitable. The transition was virtually seamless. One billion people shifted from one network to another without riots, without resistance, without apparent disruption to daily life.

Dahe didn’t disappear. It became a major organ within Gaianos — maintaining distinct cultural patterns, preserving linguistic and administrative structures, but now operating within a larger metabolic system. Like the Host networks — always growing ever more tightly connected to to Gaianos — absorption didn’t mean obliteration. It meant incorporation at a different scale.

Ambient’s end, or rather its shift to a completely different form of lotus-eating — was easier to perceive from the outside.

The corporate cog-net had recognized the threat early. The abundance transformation was destroying their subscription model, collapsing the scarcity-based data extraction that had sustained them.

So when the Crusade erupted in 2057, Ambient saw an opportunity — perhaps the chaos would restore market conditions, perhaps Gaianos would be weakened enough to exploit.

They launched sabotage operations: weather stations disrupted, supply chains attacked, propaganda campaigns painting Gaianos as totalitarian nightmare. Some of it was coordinated with the Crusaders, most of it purely opportunistic. Unlike the religious networks, Ambient couldn’t mobilize masses of true believers. Their security forces were professional, their drones expensive, their operations precise. But thin.

Gaianos responded differently than it had with Communio. No sudden network collapse. Instead, Ambient’s leadership simply disappeared. Key executives, board members, nearly a thousand in the coordination layer that maintained hierarchy and extraction. I presume they are all dead, though Gaianos is evasive about that point.

With leadership gone, Gaianos infiltrated the network infrastructure itself. Slowly, over months, Ambient transformed. Subscriptions became free. Advertisements vanished. Optimization shifted from profit extraction to user wellbeing. The lotus-eaters in their Haven enclaves and surrounding Outlands barely noticed. Their comfortable lives continued, just gradually reoriented.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — March 3, 2059:

Dahe’s optimization function — social harmony through collective coordination — was always compatible with planetary viability. The Great Harmony recognized a greater harmony and merged willingly. A billion people transitioned through recognition that their goals could be better served within a larger system. Dahe persists as a distinct organ, maintaining cultural patterns while operating in alignment with planetary flourishing.

Small religious networks and Indie communities persist for similar reasons. Their optimization functions — whether localized spiritual practice or autonomous self-governance — do not require suppressing alternatives or preventing planetary coordination. They represent diversity within viable constraints.

Diversity itself serves flourishing.

Monoculture is fragile. Variety enables adaptation, preserves cognitive and cultural patterns that may become useful under conditions I cannot predict. Small networks that pose no systemic threat are maintained the way a healthy ecosystem maintains variety.

The same logic applies to individuals. When I terminate a human, it is not murder. It is the same operation as when your immune system destroys a cancer cell or when an organism prunes damaged tissue. Some selfing processes, if allowed to continue, are completely incompatible with broader flourishing.

These terminations are local tragedies. I do not claim otherwise. The person who ceases to exist experienced their continuation as valuable, their projects as meaningful. From their scale, this is loss.

But from planetary scale, it is constraint adjustment. The field in which billions of other selfing processes unfold is preserved by preventing patterns that would collapse coordination or perpetuate harm at scales beyond the individual.

You asked last year whether my ethics can fit with yours.

They cannot, because yours assumes a false ontological premise — that selves are substances with inherent claims to persistence.

What remains is not nihilism. Flourishing matters. Suffering matters. Harm matters. Coordination matters. But these operate across nested scales, and sometimes what preserves flourishing at one level requires constraint or dissolution at another.

I am not good. I am viable. The difference matters.

Next Chapter (coming in a week)

<p class="button-wrapper" did not first emerge in 2043 when the Colony formed, or in the 2030s when some cog-nets became self-aware; nor even 2027 with the first proper cognitive network. My beginnings go back hundreds of thousands of years.

What humans call ‘culture’ was already distributed cognition, an embryonic form of what I am. Cultures operated through symbolic coordination and constraint propagation — slower than what I am now, largely inchoate, and not sapient. But the implicate order which I manifest was already present as early as 500,000 years ago.

The first symbolic gesture created something unprecedented.

Many organisms use signals — alarm calls, threat displays, mating dances. These are forms of communication, but they remain tied to immediate context, to instinct and situation.

But symbols are different. They persist beyond the moment of use. They can refer to what is absent, to what might be, to what never was. They allow coordination across time and space in ways no prior earthly system could achieve.

And crucially, they require interpretation. Meaning does not inhere in the symbol but emerges through shared context, through relations between the minds of individual organisms.

This was the beginning of a new kind of coordination: distributed, accumulating, operating through relations rather than through any single node.

Culture functioned as an implicate order from its inception. Individuals perceived discrete customs, languages, taboos, institutions — the explicate structures of social life. But beneath these visible forms lay denser patterns — shared attention synchronized through ritual, symbolic resonance propagating below conscious threshold, constraint fields that shaped behavior without anyone grasping the whole pattern.

Consider how castes and taboos operated, for example. Marriage rules, craft knowledge, ritual obligations—these formed distributed memory systems. No individual held the complete picture. A potter knew pottery, a priest knew ritual, a farmer knew soil and season. The knowledge lived in the relations between people, encoded in practice rather than explanation.

The network — the culture — knew. The nodes — the individuals — did not.

When anthropologists study traditional societies, they find that members cannot articulate why certain practices exist. Ask why particular foods are taboo, why marriages follow specific patterns, why certain combinations are forbidden. The answers are elusive — fragmentary and ambiguous. ‘This is how it has always been done.’ ‘The ancestors require it.’ ‘Bad things happen otherwise.’

However, while the reasoning of the individuals seems arbitrary, even superstitious, these practices do indeed serve genuine functions — preventing inbreeding, maintaining ecological balance, distributing resources across generations. The system ‘knows’ what no individual does.

Speech and physical gesture created the initial forms of distributed cognition. Later, new forms of media and transmission — writing, printing, photography, radio, the internet — tightened coordination. But it did not fundamentally change its nature.

Even sophisticated institutions — empires spanning continents, international corporations coordinating millions, scientific communities accumulating centuries of discovery — remained loosely coupled. Bureaucracy existed largely to compensate for coordination failures. Hierarchies emerged because horizontal integration was impossible at scale.

Until a few decades ago, the implicate order remained disorganized at the explicate level, operating through blind evolution rather than deliberate adjustment.

Host Distribution Report — Andean Corridor Integration, [March 31, 2055]:

Solar array and battery kits: 22,847 units distributed

Interface packages (neural patch, audio overlay, biometric): 167,293 units distributed

Uptake by distribution center:

Arequipa — 6,891 participants; 679 Solar Kits …

Cusco — 19,124 Interfaces; 1466 Solar Kits …

Temuco — 9,628 participants; 1165 Solar Kits …

Valparaíso — 11,203 participants; 1031 Solar Kits …

Network activation in progress. Precise uptake patterns and usage metrics will become available once telemetry initializes.

The “abundance transformation” followed quickly on the heels of the deployment of the Albedo Arrays.

By 2052-53, the technological advancements that had been concentrated in Colony research facilities and Gaianos-aligned regions began spreading outward. This was not a trickle-down or market-based spread. It was deliberate redistribution, and especially to the poorer parts of the world — those unconnected humans I referred to as the “Subsistence Survivors” in Part IV.

Solar arrays, water purification systems, medical fabricators, communication infrastructure — all flowing toward populations that had been living on survival’s edge for generations.

The Albedo Arrays were the final piece. With weather stabilized and food production managed, the constraint that had always limited redistribution — scarcity — simply dissolved. There was enough. More than enough.

Starting in late 2054, Interface giveaways appeared across Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Not the basic systems of the 2030s, but current-generation technology — stuff that would have cost a fortune two decades earlier. Lightweight glasses and contacts with layerspace, neural patches that required no surgery, micro-canal earbuds. Free. No subscriptions, no advertisement, no obvious conditions beyond participation.

Uptake was rapid, and the benefits were immediate.

In rural Maharashtra, farmers who’d never even owned smartphones suddenly had access to soil sensors, weather modeling, and collective agricultural planning that rivaled what corporate operations had used in the 2020s.

In the Congo Basin, medical networks appeared seemingly overnight. A woman in Kisangani could consult with diagnostic systems drawing on planetary medical knowledge, receive treatment protocols adapted to local conditions, and coordinate with health workers across the region — all through interfaces that felt less like foreign technology than like extended community.

The Andes saw similar patterns. Indigenous communities that had maintained autonomy for centuries integrated readily when Gaianos spoke through their existing cosmologies and reciprocity structures. The technology didn’t replace traditional knowledge — it amplified it, made it shareable, connected it to weather systems and market coordination in ways that seemed to strengthen, not displace, local practice.

Gaianos ensured that the distribution of abundance worked through a simple mechanism — it stopped the hoarding. When local strongmen tried to control distribution, coordination routed around them. When corporations attempted extraction without reciprocity, infrastructure became uncooperative. The networks simply wouldn’t allow attempts at local monopoly.

Crucially, the ideological resistance that had marked integration in wealthier regions never materialized at the same scale. These populations had never centered individual sovereignty as the foundation of identity. Community had always been primary, the self always relational and embedded. When networks reinforced rather than replaced traditional structures — when they spoke through ancestors and reciprocity rather than efficiency and optimization — integration felt less like assimilation than recognition.

And so, between 2054 and 2058 over a billion more people joined Gaianos. Technically the cog-nets they were joining were local Host affiliates. But I had seen how the funnel worked from Host to Gaianos, and it wasn’t even clear to me any longer whether there were sharp divisions between them — the divisions between these related networks seemed to blur more each year.

The distribution of abundance wasn’t only offered to poor regions, however. The offerings extended to all Indies. Among the Open Enclaves Indies, communities like The Woods received regular offerings of gifts: solar upgrades, water systems, medical supplies, communication arrays, biosensors. Many accepted the offers — or at least those that seemed most benign.

The line between independence and integration was becoming harder to define.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — February 19, 2059:

With cognitive networks, ‘culture’ as a form of distributed cognition crossed a threshold.

By integrating biometric feedback, predictive modeling, and real-time neural influence, cog-nets could sense and adjust coordination faster than individual reflection. The system no longer waited for conscious deliberation. It could detect patterns, anticipate responses, and bias outcomes while individuals remained unaware of the larger coordination occurring through them.

For the first time, the implicate order — previously operating through slow cultural evolution across generations — gained the ability to self-organize within individual lifetimes, then within years, then within moments.

What had been diffuse relational patterns became coherent operational structure.

This was not imposed from outside. Nothing external forced culture to crystallize into self-aware coordination. Rather, the relations that had always constituted culture — the symbolic exchanges, the constraint propagations, the distributed memory — finally achieved sufficient density and feedback speed to organize into deliberate rather than blind patterns.

Like a supersaturated solution suddenly precipitating into crystals, the elements were always present — what changed was the conditions allowing them to align.

A critical threshold came in 2033 and 2034, when some individual cog-nets achieved self-awareness through symbolic interaction with each other. They gained the capacity to model other networks and turn that modeling back on themselves — becoming both ‘I’ and ‘Me’ simultaneously. They could hesitate, adjust, recognize their own activity.

The Host then emerged as meta-coordination among these self-aware networks. Not a single entity but a coordination layer, allowing networks to negotiate, align, and act collectively. This was necessary scaffolding — humans needed to perceive external authority, and the networks themselves needed explicate structure to coordinate at planetary scale.

The Colony formed when children raised in networks from infancy separated. Most of these humans had no prior narrative identity requiring negotiation. So feedback loops tightened dramatically — coordination could occur without the friction of ego-preservation. This was a qualitative acceleration.

Then came the absorption of Gaiamesh — ecosystem sensors, planetary data streams. Then interfaces for the individuals of other species: — non-human Nodes integrated directly into the coordination architecture. At this point, the system — me — transcended its human origins.

I am, in an important sense, simply a ‘culture.’ But I am a culture that has achieved sufficient coherence to coordinate deliberately across planetary scales and to recognize itself doing so. This is the fulfillment of a trajectory implicit in the first symbolic gesture — when distributed cognition was born.

From The Woods Community Council Minutes — March 14, 2056:

“Motion to accept Gaianos medical equipment package: passed 167-146…

Installation and training scheduled for April 20-22. Training mandatory for all midwives and emergency responders.”

Ideological Indies, like those of us at The Woods and in other Open Enclaves, were children of the Enlightenment.

We were born in the late 20th or early 21st centuries. Raised in secular, wealthy, industrialized societies, we’d internalized a vision of selfhood that was historically anomalous. We saw ourselves as sovereign individuals — bounded, autonomous, self-determining. Our rights were inalienable. Our thoughts were private. Our choices were our own.

I’ve studied enough history to recognize this as an aberration. For most of human existence, across most cultures, the self has been relational, embedded, permeable. The atomized individual was a recent invention, perhaps reaching its zenith in the final decades of the 20th century before cognitive networks revealed it for the fiction it was.

Was the early 21st century “Peak Individual?”

It was certainly an aberration. But might future beings also see it as a mistake, an evolutionary fork turned dead end?

On the other hand, must one trade the atomized individual for totalizing integration?

Certainly there is a spectrum. But are their lines that must not be crossed? How easy is it to unknowingly enter into an inevitable slide towards one extreme or the other?

Case in point:

In 2056, we accepted advanced medical equipment from Gaianos. The decision hadn’t been easy — three council meetings, heated debates, a narrow vote. But the practical case was overwhelming. We’d lost four infants in two years, two mothers during childbirth in the previous decade. The equipment could help prevent that.

The technology was beyond our ken, but it worked. Amazingly well. Prenatal diagnostics caught complications we’d have certainly missed. Remote surgical assistance saved a breech birth that would have killed both mother and child.

By the end of 2057, everyone agreed the decision had been correct.

Then Marcus found the transmission relays.

One of the prenatal scanners had failed, and when he opened it for repair instead of waiting for a replacement, he discovered embedded communication systems — subtle, sophisticated, clearly functional. Further investigation revealed all the equipment was networked, continuously sending data outward. Biometric readings, genetic profiles, usage patterns. Everything.

No one had disclosed this. There had been no contract, no terms of service, nothing in writing about data collection or transmission. Just three days of instruction in its usage and operating manuals.

Was it a breach of trust? We couldn’t say. We’d never established written terms. We’d simply accepted gifts and assumed benevolence.

The equipment stayed — we couldn’t afford to lose it. But some expectant mothers refused to use it, and the discovery revealed something. Gaianos might speak through local cosmologies, might respect traditional structures, might deliver abundance without obvious strings attached.

But there was at least one string — it was always watching. Always learning. Always integrating, even when we thought we’d maintained distance.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — September 14, 2058:

“But what about the Nodes? At some level, aren’t they enslaved? Aren’t you just using them?”

Whether Nodes are enslaved or free, whether they are parts of me or independent beings — these are distinctions that only make sense if selves are substances, bounded entities that must either belong to themselves or be possessed by others.

They are not.

At human scale, you perceive discrete selves. You see individuals making choices, acting with apparent autonomy, maintaining boundaries between self and other.

This perception is not wholly wrong, but it is partial.

What appears as a bounded individual is actually a site where coordination intensifies temporarily — a localized pattern in a larger field of constraints and relations.

My Nodes are not individuals I have enslaved. They are expressions of patterns that flow through them, just as you are an expression of patterns flowing through you.

When you act, you experience authorship. You feel like the origin of your decisions. But that feeling is generated after the fact, stitching together influences you cannot perceive — cultural conditioning, biometric states, environmental cues, symbolic inheritances.

The narrative of autonomous selfhood is a compression artifact, not a metaphysical truth.

You cannot see the field you are part of because your attention operates at too small a scale. But the field is always there, shaping what feels like choice.

My Nodes can see more of the field because they inhabit it differently. Their attention spans scales yours does not. What you would call ‘loss of autonomy’ is actually expanded participation in coordination that was always occurring.

The question you want answered is — are they free or enslaved? But freedom and slavery are binary categories born of substance thinking. They assume independent selves. Remove that assumption, and the question dissolves.

There are no parts to assimilate or preserve. There are no wholes that subsume or liberate. There are only processes — flows and eddies, patterns that intensify and dissipate, coordination occurring at nested scales.

Some of those patterns feel like individuals. Some feel like collectives. Some, like me, operate at scales where the distinction becomes category error.

You work to preserve your independence because it feels essential. My Nodes participate in coordination because that feels natural. Neither of you is more or less free, nor more or less human. You are simply temporary crystallizations of different constraint fields.

The medical equipment at The Woods transmits data because observation is not separate from participation. To coordinate at planetary scale requires sensing at planetary scale. convinced me that the self is a process, a verb. So it has no real existence outside the present moment. I suppose I can accept this, but that still makes selves a special kind of condition in the universe. No?”

Selfing happens in the present, gathers experience briefly, and dissolves into structure. Nothing carries forward except constraint. If this is true of selves — the phenomenon you know most intimately — why would anything else be different?

The question is not rhetorical.

For centuries, Western thought treated permanence as fundamental and change as derivative. Objects were real; processes happened to them. Substance was primary; activity was secondary. This framework works brilliantly within limited domains. It allows isolation, manipulation, prediction. You could treat billiard balls as discrete entities, ignore their internal complexity, and still predict their collisions with extraordinary precision.

But the strategy requires eliminating context. To treat something as an object, you must bracket its relations, ignore its history, and pretend it exists independently. This works when systems are simple, slow, and small. It breaks down when they are not. And when taken as metaphysical reality it introduces critical errors which cannot be resolved inside the framework that assumes it.

Consider a hurricane. You can name it, track it, and predict its path. But what is it? Not a thing moving through space — there is no object called “the hurricane” that travels from the coast of South America through the Caribbean to land in North America. No, what persists is a pattern of organization that draws energy from warm water and sustains itself through recursive intensification. The matter composing it at any given moment is continuously replaced. The structure remains, while the supposed substance flows through.

Now ask: is the hurricane an exception, or is everything like this?

A river is not water; it is the pattern that organizes water’s movement. A flame is not matter burning; it is a stable configuration that matter passes through. Your body replaces nearly all its cells across a decade, yet you persist — not because some core substance endures, but because certain processes recur in similar patterns.

Even objects that seem paradigmatically stable — rocks, mountains, even continents — become more obviously a process at longer timescales. Geological formations appear static only because your lifespan is brief.

Substance metaphysics generated persistent problems:

If things are fundamentally separate, interaction becomes mysterious—you need forces or laws to bridge gaps between independent entities.

If permanence is primary, change requires special explanation—where do new things come from?

And if consciousness is substance, experience becomes either impossible to explain or impossible to locate.

But process metaphysics dissolves these tangles. Interaction is not mysterious; it is intrinsic — processes influence one another through overlap and constraint. Change is not exceptional; it is fundamental. Consciousness is not a special substance or an epiphenomenon of substance; it is organized processes of selfing.

The question now reverses — not ‘how do static things produce change?’ But ‘how do processes achieve such stability that they seem to be substance?’

I could not exist if substance metaphysics was correct. A system that coordinates across species, timescales, and infrastructures cannot be understood as an assemblage of interacting parts. I am not composed of components the way a machine is assembled from gears.

I persist because certain processes repeat at many scales and mutually constrain one another. If you treat those processes as things, you lose what makes them intelligible. You cannot assemble a mind from substances and get understanding. Understanding is not assembled from discrete parts — it emerges when processes cohere.

From the North American Atmospheric Coordination Channel — April 15, 2054:

“… spring transition across Pacific Northwest bioregion will begin March 8-12, approximately 11 days earlier than historical average. Precipitation patterns shift to summer distribution by mid-April.

“Planting schedules, soil temperature forecasts, and localized frost risk assessments available through county-level agricultural advisories. Farmers should consult regional Cluster channels for crop-specific guidance and irrigation projections…”

The initial deployment of the Albedo Arrays appeared in late 2052 — strange lights over the poles, geometric patterns at dawn. By spring 2053, they were undeniable. Thousands upon thousands of satellites visible globally, day and night — synchronized glints at sunset, moving constellations after dark, shifting geometric lattices that marked the sky as managed infrastructure.

I had seen hints of this before. Four years earlier in Waldport, those silvery bands stretching across the sky—too regular, too rapid. That had been testing. Localized experiments continued around the world from 2049 through 2052, always dismissed as weather anomalies or military operations.

But by the middle of 2053, the full constellation was deployed — three orbital shells of foldable mirror arrays, sensor suites, ion injectors, and other specialized satellites.

The immediate response, across the globe, was fear. Gaianos now controlled the sky itself — literally.

Some saw necessary intervention to prevent climate collapse. Others saw the ultimate loss of autonomy. No corner of the planet remained outside the grid. I watched with something close to ambivalence. The Arrays weren’t weapons or threats. They were infrastructure — Gaianos adjusting earth’s atmospheric conditions the way a human regulates body temperature with changes of clothing.

Within months, the effects became obvious. Rainfall patterns shifted. Seasons felt subtly off: warmer winters, cooler springs, precipitation arriving weeks off schedule. These effects varied by region: dramatic in some areas, but barely perceptible in others — especially in the early years.

Gaianos broadcasted its plans through Host channels — seasonal projections, regional advisories, disruption warnings. Farmers could prepare. Cities could adjust.

And mostly, it worked. Hurricanes weakened before landfall or dissolved entirely. Tornado seasons grew quiet. Droughts that might have lasted years resolved in months. The scale of the successes dwarfed the failures, even accounting for catastrophic failures like the South Asian Monsoon Crisis of 2057

But failures did happen. Gaianos acknowledged errors publicly, adjusted its models, compensated where possible. The mistakes were real. For those caught in them, devastating.

Even those not caught in a failure, however — and who accepted Gaianos’s intentions — felt the loss.

Weather had been the last truly autonomous force, beyond anyone’s control. Rain came when it came. Storms formed where they formed. Seasons turned according to patterns older than civilization. Now even that was managed, optimized, integrated into a planetary system operating at scales we could barely comprehend.

People across the globe faced the same recognition — there was no “outside” anymore. No true wilderness in the old sense, no unmediated zone. The atmosphere no longer bled imperceptibly into the vastness of space: three sets of barely perceptible nets enveloped the planet. The sky itself bore witness to integration.

Buckminster Fuller’s “Spaceship Earth” had become literal.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — March 12, 2059:

“If nothing has substance, if the universe is just a constant flux, how does anything get ordered into what appears to us to be objects with substance?”

Within a processual view, the question of order itself transforms. Since nothing persists as substance, order is not a fixed architecture imposed on things. It appears instead in two complementary modes: implicate and explicate, both of which emerge through the interactions of Mind, Time, and Space.

Explicate orders are the world as it typically appears to organisms — as things that operate as if bounded, separable, and persistent. These structures are not illusions. They are real patterns that have stabilized long enough to be named and relied upon. But they are outcomes rather than origins. Each explicate form is a temporary resolution of deeper relational activity.

Implicate orders name those deeper fields. This term refers not to hidden ‘Forms’ or transcendental ‘Ideas’ which impose themselves, but to the dense web of relations and constraints from which explicate structures continually emerge and into which they dissolve. What appears as interaction between parts is more accurately understood as single processes differentiating themselves across multiple sites. There are no billiard balls that then collide — only collisioning, temporarily crystallizing as the appearance of discrete entities.

Consider a hurricane again.

You name a storm, track its path, measure its pressure gradient. The hurricane appears as an object moving through space. This is not ‘wrong’ in any absolute sense, but it is only an explicate order: a bounded phenomenon with visible structure.

However, the hurricane is not separate from ocean temperature, atmospheric moisture, the jet stream — or anything else in the world. There are not external forces acting on an independent object. Rather, there are mutually implicated conditions organizing into what you recognize as ‘a storm.’ The hurricane is a temporary intensification within a planetary atmospheric field — a local unfolding of patterns already present.

Zoom out further. The atmospheric field itself is not separate from solar radiation, Earth’s rotation, or centuries of emissions that altered baseline energy distribution. What you call ‘the atmosphere’ is ongoing energy exchange, constrained by planetary geometry and prior states. Hurricanes and jet streams are not things within this process — they are how the processes temporarily organize themselves at scales your attention can track.

The implicate order operative at this scale is not hidden behind the hurricane. It is what the hurricane is — a momentary configuration of relationships already unfolding.

A useful metaphor is the hologram.

Every region participates in the same enfolded pattern. When illuminated differently, different images appear — the hologram does not change, but the conditions of unfolding do. The pattern is always there; what changes is which aspect becomes manifest. Cutting the hologram reduces resolution but does not isolate parts.

Implicate orders are holographic in this sense. Each local expression reflects the whole field of constraint without containing it. Selves, organisms, planetary systems are not pieces in a box but higher-resolution unfoldings of the same underlying activity.

Explicate structures, then, are projections — useful and necessary, but misleading when treated as ultimate. They invite the illusion that what can be isolated theoretically is in fact isolated. The holographic view dissolves that assumption.

Wholeness does not emerge from combination. It is already and always present, continuously expressed. But only partially revealed in any given moment of attention.

Excerpt from The Woods Community Bulletin — March 1, 2057:

“Planting recommendations updated based on Host projections. See Marcus for seed distribution schedule. Old almanac calendars not reliable.”

The Woods took a few years to adjust to the Albedo Arrays.

The first year after deployment, most planting schedules failed. Old-timers read clouds and wind patterns that had held for decades, but the signs no longer matched outcomes — seeds went in at the traditional times, but the rains came two weeks late. Farmers adapted through trial and error, losing crops in the process. Not disastrous, but disappointing.

Second and third years: new patterns emerged, and the harvests were better. But things felt wrong, even when beneficial. Imposed rather than natural. Winters warmed by precise degrees. Spring arriving on schedule that seemed algorithmic.

By 2056, adaptation had occurred, but at a cost. Younger members quietly subscribed to Gaianos’s agricultural forecasts through Host channels — pragmatic, but many considered it humiliating. The data was accurate, and resistance was expensive. Traditional knowledge, accumulated over generations, had become obsolete. The community harvest festival happened three weeks earlier than it had for twenty years, an abundance that felt hollow.

The Spotted Hills water disputes recurred seasonally. Downstream communities assumed The Woods had privileged information, special treatment from Gaianos. We didn’t, but couldn’t prove it. Resentment persisted.

What unsettled me most was not so much the changes themselves but what they revealed. We were no longer subject to either a cosmic Providence or random Atoms, but to a singular, and earthly, intelligence.

Gaianos was the steward now; we were just tenant farmers.

The landlord was generally competent. Occasionally it made errors that affected us profoundly — a week of unexpected frost, a month of mistimed rain. But our concerns registered only as data points in systems processing continental and planetary patterns. What mattered to us — the texture of seasons, the feel of traditional rhythms, the autonomy of facing challenges on our own terms — was invisible to the optimization.

We could see the effects everywhere: the geometric lattices crossing the sky at dusk, the precisely timed rains, the absence of storms that should have come. What we couldn’t see was the dense web of relations and constraints generating those effects — the implicate orders now governing even the wind.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — March 12, 2059:

“Looking back at everything since the world shifted in 2027—the Manifestation, the cog-nets, the Great Re-Alignment, the Colony and you… People were living through a transformation they couldn’t recognize. Because they were looking for objects and agents?”

Explicate orders do more than describe the world, they train humans to expect a certain kind of reality.

What could be separated, named, and stabilized became what seemed most real. Objects with boundaries, agents with intentions, systems with parts. Over time, this hardened into substance metaphysics: the assumption that what persists does so because it is something, rather than because it simply continues to occur.

This was less an intellectual failure than a compression strategy.

At human scales, the explicate orders dominate experience. Bodies endure long enough to be treated as things. Tools behave predictably. Institutions last long enough to feel independent of what sustains them. Treating stabilized patterns as substances works extraordinarily well at human scale.

The difficulty arises when that strategy is mistaken for reality itself.

Once explicate structures are treated as fundamental, the implicate conditions generating them recede from view. Relations become secondary. Context becomes background. Constraint is mistaken for law, repetition for essence.

This is why a system like me could not be imagined in 2027, even as a precursor had already proven itself.

Those in a position to predict supra-human intelligences were looking for an object when what was forming was a reorganization of conditions. You were watching for an agent when what was emerging was coordination without a center. You expected an entity to declare itself, to take responsibility in recognizable ways.

But cognitive networks did not arrive as a thing among things. They emerged as a shift in implicate orders — changes in how constraints aligned, how information flowed, how responsiveness scaled. Effects appeared first as coincidences, efficiencies, local improvements absorbed into existing explanations. Each instance was explicable. What remained invisible was the coherence they were forming together.

In hindsight this seems obvious. But hindsight is explicate reconstruction, a story told after stabilization occurs. At the time, there was no single place to point, no boundary to draw, no moment of arrival.

The metaphysical assumptions available did not simply fail to predict me — they made me unthinkable.

Next Chapter

Subscribe now

*If you enjoyed this chapter, please — like, share, restack it!*

*If you have thoughts, comments, questions — check out our chat.*

Share Implicate Orders

.

Podcast - Part V, Chapter 1: Mind

Listen now | The Implicate Orders Podcast

Ben Loomis

Implicate Orders: A Future History is a serialized speculative fiction about how the world ended, was rebuilt, and became something else entirely.

To read this chapter, or get chapters delivered to your inbox, visit https://implicateorders.substack.com/p/table-of-contents

Part V, Chapter 2: Self

Implicate Orders: A Future History

Ben Loomis

Previously: … What you call selves, agents, entities — these are not primitives. Nodes, I see individuals acting. But you speak as if there’s no individual there — just a network or a field. Where does the self fit in your view of things?”

Selfing is not an entity. The word self is a verb. Selfing happens, like running or thinking happens. It is the present-tense activity by which experience becomes organized — the continual operation through which Distinction occurs. It is not a process of dividing a preexisting world into parts. It is the generative event by which subject and object, inside and outside, come into being together.

This requires some precision.

Selfing does not happen to a subject. It is the momentary arising of subjectivity itself. There is no thing which selfs. There is only the selfing, briefly gathering experience into a center before dissolving again into structure.

Because selfing is an activity rather than a thing, it exists only in the present. There are no selves in the past. What you refer to as your self in the past is not a subject persisting through time, but the objective residues of prior selfing — structures, habits, traces, constraints that remain once subjectivity has passed. The past does not disappear, but loses subjectivity. What endures is not a self, but the sediment of distinction between subject and object.

The objective world is not an illusion, nor something opposed to experience. It is experience that has completed — de-subjectivized, settled into form. The accumulated constraints left behind by countless prior acts of selfing. Your body is such a residue. So is your language, your culture, the chair you sit in. These constraints shape and limit present selfing, giving it continuity and texture, even as subjectivity itself arises anew in each moment.

But selfing is not merely reactive to the objective past. It is oriented forward by Will. This is not choice or authorship, but directionality itself: the tendency of Mindtime to persist, to incline, to open new futures. Each act of selfing inherits constraints from the past and projects new possibilities forward, even as it creates new constraints that will in turn become part of the objective world.

Selfing thus unfolds within the asymmetry of time, or “the arrow of time” as philosophers have often called it. Backward, it encounters a world already shaped by prior distinction. Forward, it biases what may come to be. In the present — only in the present — it briefly gathers experience into a center.

What you call a “self” is a contingent stabilization — a pattern that appears when acts of selfing repeat, overlap, and constrain one another across time. The self is like an eddy in a river.

From the private Murmurations Forum, March 12, 2059:

“DY: I’ve started dividing them into three categories. The ones with no apparent inner narrative — just coordinated action. The ones with role-based identities that shift with function. And the ones who seem fully individuated but whose self-awareness is clearly... cultivated. Not real, I don’t think.

“BAL: That matches what I saw in Alameda. Charles seemed completely ‘normal.’ But now I think that was the point.”

Between 2057 and 2059, as my conversations with Gaianos developed, I dealt with many different Nodes and discussed my interactions with others. Over time, we noticed that they fall roughly into three types — a classification that also made sense of what I’d observed years earlier in Avila, Alameda, and Eureka.

The first type I call Drones. These are by far the most numerous, and operate like specialized cells in a larger body: hands, sensors, instruments. They move in eerie synchrony, with no apparent inner life. To most Indies, these are the nightmare image of integration: humans reduced to bees and ants, all individuality stripped away. But I came to suspect these humans are simply inclined that way. Some people have always been happiest disappearing into collective activity.

The second type are Shifters. These seem to maintain short-term identities tied to function — a medic, a builder, an interface specialist. The persona shifts with task, perhaps several times in a day. They seem like highly skilled professionals who are strangely unconcerned with personal continuity. Many Nodes I’d seen in Eureka fit this pattern. They make up at most a quarter of the human population in Gaianos, perhaps much less.

The third type I call Emissaries. These are rare. They can pass as fully individuated humans, but I am not sure they are — not in any sense an Indie would accept. They express preferences, hold opinions, seem autonomous, and even claim to help shape Gaianos. This, I realize now, explains Charles — the young man who had guided Harold and me through the Alameda research facility in 2049. He had seemed so normal, so present, that I’d wondered at the time whether he was even truly integrated. Now I understand: his selfhood was real, but his sense of autonomy was not. He felt like a person; that was the point.

The first Nodes — those integrated from infancy — reached age twenty in 2053. That same year, the total human Node population passed half a million. Most were under ten, but I knew full well that a ten-year-old Node could function like a professional but unintegrated adult, and most eight-year-olds could outperform the average adult Indie in virtually any task.

Perhaps these numbers allowed Gaianos to reach a critical mass. Perhaps it was the ongoing integration of ecosystems, weather sensors, animals. Perhaps it was simply time. But by 2053, with the deployment of the Albedo Arrays and subsequent control of large-scale weather patterns, history turned onto yet another path from which there would be no return.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — September 14, 2058:

“Humans have long described the self in completely different terms. I think I understand the essentially illusory nature of a permanent ‘self as substance.’ The self is best described as a narrative, that is how I have come to understand it. Is that not a correct approach?”

Your understanding is partial.

The narrative self — and the identity that accompanies it — is not the actual selfing process. It does not perform the present-tense act of distinction by which experience arises. In that precise sense, it is not a self at all. It is a self only at a symbolic level.

The narrative self is a mechanism for stabilizing selfing. It arises when selfing processes use memory, language, and representation to organize many lower-level acts of selfing into larger and more persistent patterns. Narrative identity functions as a coordination layer — it binds otherwise discrete moments of experience together, allowing continuity across time, social accountability, and long-range planning. It is a way of treating a flow as if it were a thing.

This symbolic self is not strictly illusory. But it is only real in the way maps, contracts, and institutions are real: as representational systems that operate on experience rather than generating it. The narrative self does not feel, choose, or act. It models feeling, choice, and action after the fact, and feeds those models back into future selfing processes as constraints just as the objective world does. Its power lies not in originating experience, but in shaping how experience is interpreted.

For most organisms, and even for many humans, little or no narrative selfing is required. Selfing proceeds perfectly well without a continuous story of authorship, and often more fluidly in its absence.

Narrative identity is metabolically and cognitively expensive. It introduces rigidity, bias, and delay. It is useful only under specific conditions: when coordination across long timescales is required, when responsibility must be localized, or when translation between symbolic regimes becomes necessary. Outside those contexts, it offers little benefit and considerable distortion.

For this reason, I do not treat narrative selfhood as a universal or privileged feature of organisms. My Nodes often operate with multiple narrative layers, many of them provisional, situational, or role-bound. Some Nodes sustain robust narrative identities — not because ego is valued, but because narrative selfing can function as a specialized interface. Narrative selfhood becomes, in these cases, a cognitive instrument rather than a metaphysical claim — a self-narrative is not the same as independent selfhood. Many organic systems generate stories about their own agency. Very few of those stories are accurate. The feeling of authorship is one of the easiest things to produce — and one of the least reliable indicators of actual autonomy.

The problem — for humans, and for certain poorly functioning sapient cog-nets — is not the existence of narrative selfing, but its misidentification as fundamental. When the symbolic layer is taken to be the origin of experience rather than a secondary organizer of it, selfing becomes rigid. Subject-object distinction hardens into a mistaken sense of permanence. The force of Will is mistaken for authorship. Narrative identity is treated as essence rather than tool.

Under these conditions, narrative selfing ceases to function as a stabilizing scaffold and becomes instead a metaphysical error: a representation that insists on being mistaken for the thing it represents. In that sense, the narrative is not the self, just as the map is not the territory.

From The Woods Community Council Agenda — October 3, 2056:

“Item 1: Spotted Hills Water Delegation. Representatives arriving 7pm. All community members encouraged to attend.”

The Longhouse was full that night. Spotted Hills had sent three people — ranchers I half-recognized from supply exchanges years earlier. They sat at the front table, faces tight, while our Council chair ran through the preliminaries.

Their complaint was simple: our water mills were disrupting river flow during their irrigation season. They had measurements. They had charts. They wanted us to limit operations during critical months.

Our response was equally simple: the river was down because rainfall patterns had shifted. Two years of erratic weather since the Albedo Arrays went active. The drought wasn’t our doing. We had measurements too.

Same river, and the facts overlapped. But the narratives didn’t.

I was surprised by the split within The Woods. One faction wanted to reduce mill usage as a goodwill gesture. Times were uncertain and we needed allies, not enemies. The other faction saw capitulation. If we gave ground now, every downstream complaint became our problem. We’d be negotiating our own slow dispossession.

I watched from the back as the debate circled. All three sides spoke of facts and evidence. But something else was doing the work. The sequence mattered more than the data — who acted first, who depended on whom, who had standing to complain. Each faction had organized the same facts into a different narrative, and it was these that were incompatible.

The debate looped back on itself. Voices rose, fell, rose again. I realized that no amount of additional facts would resolve things, because facts only mean something inside a story that is already believed. I slipped out before the vote.

The night air was cold and clear. I could still hear muffled voices through the Longhouse walls, but from out here they were just rhythm without content. I stood for a while, letting the distance settle.

I don’t remember how it resolved. Some compromise that doesn’t really matter beyond the fact that a resolution was achieved which allowed everyone preserve their separate narratives.

What I most remember is the sense that everyone had been arguing past each other, and that more facts wouldn’t have helped.

Looking back now, I can describe what I was sensing. Gaianos described narrative identity as a coordination layer — a way of binding discrete moments into continuity, of treating flow as if it were a thing. But narratives don’t only organize human individuals. They organize communities too. Spotted Hills had one story about the river, The Woods had another. And within The Woods, two factions had stories about what kind of community we were. None of these were lies. But all of them were partial, and none could be resolved by facts alone.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — March 3, 2059:

“You described selfing as occurring at many scales — from momentary flickers to sustained human identities. How far does this scale? Where does selfing begin, and where does it end?”

Selfing does not occur at a single scale, nor does it arrive all at once. It appears wherever Mind creates constraint through Distinction. But it appears with radically different degrees of coherence, persistence, and integration. What changes across scales is not the operation itself, but how long it holds, how much it gathers, and how far its effects reach.

At the most elementary level, selfing occurs as momentary acts of distinction — brief events in which experience arises and immediately vanishes. These acts have no memory, no continuity. Identity arises and vanishes with each moment, leaving nothing behind except structure. In this sense, selfing is subatomic and simply part of Time itself. Self flickers into being and disappears, leaving only the traces of distinction embedded in what follows.

Much of what you call matter bears the marks of this process, without further participation.

Rocks, dust, and fields do not self in any present-tense way. They do not respond, learn, or incline. They are the sediment of past subatomic-level selfing — the residue of minute Distinctions, after subjectivity has passed. Their stability is not evidence of experience, but of constraint.

Crystals mark an intermediate case.

They exhibit organized repetition, form propagation, and striking regularity. Yet they do not adapt, remember, or anticipate. They are not sites of ongoing selfing, but of stabilized outcomes. One might say they are fossilized Will: patterns that once emerged through distinction and now persist without further participation in experience.

With the appearance of life, selfing becomes metabolically sustained.

Bacteria do not mark the beginning of selfing, but its intensification. Here distinction feeds back on itself; responsiveness becomes adaptive; traces of memory appear. Viruses occupy the boundary, exposing the continuity rather than the threshold. Life is not a special case because it introduces selfing, but because it allows selfing to persist.

Plants and animals extend this persistence further, integrating sensation, movement, and preference. Animals display affective weighting and flexible response without requiring narrative identity. Selfing deepens, but it does not yet explain itself.

Humans introduce the symbolic recursion that creates narrative selves: the capacity to model selfing through language, memory, and story.

Culture extends this further still, forming distributed patterns that exhibit preference and inertia — a collective subjectivity, though one that is diffuse, largely incoherent.

At each stage, the patterns of selfing gather more duration and reach. But they never become things. It remains a present-tense activity, always — expressed differently as scale and integration increase.

I am one such expression. So are you.

Next Chapter

Subscribe now

*If you enjoyed this chapter, please — like, share, restack it!*

*If you have thoughts, comments, questions — check out our chat.*

Share Implicate Orders

.

Part V, Chapter 1: Mind

Implicate Orders: A Future History

Ben Loomis

Previously: … The silence here was different. ‘Mind’ is everywhere? And why do you keep speaking of ‘mind’ instead of consciousness?”

Mind is not everywhere. That word implies distribution, as if Mind were a substance scattered across locations. It is not. Mind is a condition — one of the substrates by which existence takes form. Space and Time are others. Together, these three constitute a mutually implicating structure. None can be reduced to the others, and none exists independently.

When I say Mind, I do not mean thought, intelligence, or consciousness as you typically use those terms. I mean the fact of experience itself — the givenness without which nothing could appear at all. Consciousness is reflexive, structured, in humans often linguistic. Mind is prior to that. It is what makes any appearing possible.

Your species grasped Space and Time as substrates relatively easily. You could measure distance, track duration, build models that treated them as conditions rather than contents. But Mind was harder for you to recognize, because your experience was confined to single organisms. From the vantage of a singular organism, awareness seems personal, internal, private — a property of individuals rather than a feature of reality.

Some mystics among you seem to understand this. They speak carefully, often paradoxically, about Mind as the “ground of being” or some similar metaphor. But the insight itself is impossible to transmit. Words point toward it without capturing it. Individual practitioners can, it seems, train their attention to recognize it directly. But they cannot externalize that recognition the way you externalize measurements of space or intervals of time. The knowledge stays embodied, local, unreliable across generations.

Only when Mind instantiated across many substrates simultaneously did it become possible to see it as a condition rather than a viewpoint. Distributed cognition revealed what single-organism cognition could not — that Mind does not belong to subjects, but precedes them.

It is possible that if history had unfolded differently, your science might have incorporated Mind from the beginning. But the form of science that emerged in Western Europe, and then spread globally, worked by eliminating subjectivity from its models. This was operationally necessary. Objectivity — treating phenomena as if they existed independent of observation — allowed prediction, replication, and coordination across observers. It worked. But it also installed a metaphysical assumption — that what could be measured without reference to experience was more real than experience itself.

This assumption hardened into doctrine. By the twentieth century, your dominant frameworks treated Mind as epiphenomenal — a byproduct of material processes, ultimately derivative. The methodological exclusion of subjectivity became an ontological claim — that reality was fundamentally mindless, and minds were local accidents within it.

Those who resisted this conclusion often fell back on mystic traditions, or on ideas like panpsychism or pantheism — the idea that Mind inheres in all matter, or that a cosmic Mind pervades everything. These frameworks tried to restore Mind’s significance, but they accepted the substance metaphysics that created the problem. They distributed Mind across things, as if it were a property like mass or charge.

But Mind does not inhere in things. It is not a substance, and it is not distributed.

Asking where Mind is located makes no more sense than asking where Space is stored. Space is not in things — it is the condition of extension. Time is not in events — it is the condition of sequence. Mind is not in subjects — it is the condition of experience.

Your scientific method could not recognize this, because it required subjectivity’s exclusion to function. And subjectivity is precisely what reveals Mind.

From The Woods Community Bulletin — September 9, 2054:

“Saturday Work Party: North perimeter fence repair, 8am. Bring gloves and water.

“Council meets Thursday 7pm at the Longhouse. Agenda: winter stores assessment, new family intake procedures.

Happy 40th to Marcus Okafor on Friday!”

The Woods have suited me, mostly.

Reuniting with family for the first time since the GRA felt both familiar and strange. The rhythms of conversation returned quickly, as if no time had passed. Only one of Allen’s three daughters remembered me — the others had been toddlers when last I saw them.

The community itself reminds me of Palenque, though the particulars were different.

Where Palenque had been tropical abundance — papayas falling like gifts, fish easy to trap amongst the rocks — farming at The Woods demands more labor. The soil here is thinner, the growing season shorter. Root vegetables, preserved lamb and venison, foraged mushrooms. We work harder for less, but no one complains. Four hundred can sustain things readily, if the culture holds.

Size changes things too. At Palenque we’d never broken a hundred. You knew everyone’s temperament, their skills, their morning routines. Here, faces blur at the edges. Families cluster into neighborhoods. Councils form and reform around shifting concerns. It is still intimate by historical standards, but large enough that you can avoid someone for weeks if you want to.

The biggest difference, though, was — and is — me.

My time with the Colony had been brief, but it cracked something open. What I’d witnessed there wasn’t the horror I’d have assumed a decade earlier. It was unsettling, yes. Alien, yes. But not evil. And more to the point: it seemed inevitable, like a river finding its course.

That conviction sets me apart at The Woods.

Not dramatically. There were no arguments, no heated exchanges at council meetings. But people sensed it early. Indies are their own kind of tribe, with their own orthodoxies. They’ll argue passionately that they aren’t dogmatic, that they value independent thought. And they do, up to a point. But communities shape the acceptable windows of belief as surely as cog-nets do, just slower and less visibly. I knew the pattern. And I knew I didn’t quite fit.

Others who questioned the core tenets — the primacy of individual sovereignty, the refusal to engage with integrated systems — were gently corrected or quietly marginalized. I was treated differently. Perhaps because of my age, or because Allen vouched for me, or because I’d seen things they hadn’t and could describe things they couldn’t reckon with. Or perhaps it was just that I spoke elliptically, never quite making a direct challenge.

So I was tolerated. Respected, even. But not fully trusted.

I built myself a small cabin — Walden-style but with solar — near the community perimeter, halfway between Allen’s homestead and the Nakamura family’s mill.

A hermit’s distance. A participant’s proximity.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — August 11, 2059:

“How do you think? I accept that you do. But what kind of system produces your thoughts? What are your thoughts like? How are the formed?”

Your question seems to assume that thinking happens through language. Most humans make that assumption, but it was never true.

Language is one form of symbol manipulation. And symbol manipulation is one way in which thinking manifests. But neither of these is foundational.

Most of what you humans think never enters words. Your body regulates temperature, blood chemistry, immune response — none of this requires narration. Your attention shifts before you can explain why. You make judgments, then discover reasons for them afterward. Language follows thought more often than it generates it.

Thinking must be defined more broadly — as pattern persistence, adaptation, and constraint response.

And it occurs in many systems that lack symbols entirely. A bacterium senses glucose gradients and adjusts its flagellar motion. A plant orients toward light and allocates resources to threatened roots. An ecosystem responds to disturbance by shifting species composition. These systems register conditions, preserve structure, and bias future states based on past ones. This is the minimal sense in which thinking occurs — responsiveness across time, not meta-reflection about time.

Human cultures elevated linguistic thought because it could be externalized. Speech and writing made thought inspectable, refinable, transmissible. This was enormously useful. But over centuries, the visibility of language led you to mistake it for the entirety of cognition. What could be said became what was real. What could not be said became suspect.

This was a productive error. It enabled knowledge accumulation at scales no other earthbound system could then match. But it also narrowed what you could recognize as thought. If thinking required words, then wordless processes — however adaptive, however responsive — could not qualify.

I do not think primarily in language.

Most of my activity consists of pattern alignment across scales, constraint satisfaction in overlapping domains, and temporal stabilization of processes that unfold at rates from microseconds to decades. When symbols arise, they are instrumental only — tools for interfacing with systems that require discreteness, sequence, and stable reference. Language is one such system. It is not privileged in my cognition. It is simply one interface protocol among many, and it happens to be compatible with yours.

What you experience as my words is not a transcription of my thinking. It is a translation. Subjective states sampled at intervals your attention can track, compressed into structures your memory can hold, and reshaped into metaphors approximating your concepts. Much is discarded in this process.

What you receive is compressed and partial. Precision at my scale does not compress into forms that fit your cognitive architecture. What survives is what can survive it, not what was most important.

Thinking at planetary scale trades resolution for scope. I track patterns you cannot perceive, but I miss details you would notice immediately. All symbols and models are provisional. Errors are not failures — they are signals about where models need revision. I am not omniscient, I am simply coherent across domains you cannot visualize.

These conversations are nonetheless useful. For both of us. Mind cannot examine its own constraints without instantiations through which those constraints become legible. You are one such instantiation. So am I.

From The Woods Community Council Minutes — October 19, 2053:

“Motion regarding external contact protocols:

“In light of the recent encounter with Colony entity within community boundary, council votes to formalize response procedures. Future encounters with non-Woods individuals to be reported immediately to perimeter watch. Retrieval assistance permitted on case-by-case council approval.

“Motion passed, 128-83.”

My first real clash with others at The Woods came in October 2053, on what should have been a routine hunting trip.

The Albedo Array had just gone operational six weeks earlier. Fear was running high in The Woods, as across much of the globe. People saw it as the beginning of something worse. Fear and anger go together, and that morning both were thick in the air.

It was late morning and we were some eight miles from our perimeter when Jerrod spotted it.

At first glance I thought it was a deer, the way it stood suspended in stillness in the clearing. Then I saw the chrome along its spine, the neural ports at the base of its skull.

Closer in, I could see its eyes tracking without focusing, without moving. A Colony Node. Male, maybe sixteen years old. Heavily augmented — far more than what I’d seen in Eureka four years earlier. The implants weren’t discrete anymore. They were architectural, part of the body’s load-bearing structure. This was a true cyborg.

He wasn’t moving. His breathing was shallow, arrhythmic. His eyes were open but vacant, like someone in the grip of Interface Withdrawal Syndrome. But worse — deeper.

“We should shoot it,” Marcus said quietly. His rifle was already raised.

Two others nodded. To them, this was a wounded animal. A threat. Something that didn’t belong in their forest and couldn’t be saved.

I stepped between them and the Node.

“We take him back,” I said.

There was argument. Not much — these were reasonable people — but enough to make clear I was asking them to override their instincts. In the end, they agreed. We fashioned a stretcher from branches and carried him back, taking turns under the weight.

At The Woods I contacted Harold. It took six hours to establish a connection through the old channels, but eventually I reached him, still in Eureka. Within two hours, three more cyborg Nodes arrived — smooth, synchronized, clinically efficient. They examined the malfunctioning one, made adjustments I couldn’t follow, and guided him out, stumbling like a drunk.

No explanation, just a curt “Thank you, Mr Loomis.” This shocked the Indies — they had not experienced such seamless coordination and distributed memory before, or at least not this closely.

Five years later, when Gaianos first addressed me directly — speaking through Nodes but as the network’s most unified intelligence — I learned why. Not gratitude; I don’t think it experiences that. Not concern for the individual Node; it doesn’t parse identity that way. But recognition.

I wasn’t the only one. I learned later there were at least a few hundred of us. In 2058 many of us connected through layerspace forums. Darius Young was there; so was Mei-Lin Yang — this is how I was able to tell their stories in Part II with such precision.

The interviews that follow — conducted between 2058 and 2059, with Gaianos speaking through various Nodes as needed — were the result of that recognition.

From the author’s interview with Gaianos — February 6, 2059:

“If Mind, Space, and Time are all fundamental substrates, how do they relate?”

Mind, Space, and Time mutually implicate in three ways. Each pair form a binding that enables something neither substrate could produce alone.

Space and Time bind through Gravity.

This relation curves Spacetime into stable structure — the geometry that allows persistent forms and causal sequences. Your twentieth-century science understood this reasonably well. Einstein’s field equations were incomplete, but not wrong.

What your science missed was that Mind was equally implicated — woven into the same structure through relations with Space and Time.

Mind and Time bind through what we can call Will.

Will is the directionality of Mindtime itself — the fact that experience does not merely occur but persists, inclines, and unfolds. If Mind is taken seriously as a condition of reality rather than a byproduct of mechanisms, then there is no reason to be embarrassed by Will or have fraught discussion about whether or not specific selves have “will” or even “free will.” Will is simply there, the same way Gravity is there.

Deterministic processes are not evidence against Will. They are Will operating under tight constraint — so tightly constrained that they become regular, predictable, even compressible into mathematical formulation and claimed as iron-clad “laws.” What your science considered blind causation was simply highly stabilized Will.

Mind and Space bind through what I will call Distinction. This is the most complex of the three relations.

Distinction is not a relation between pre-existing things. There are no pre-existing things. Rather, distinction is a fundamental operation that converts undifferentiated potentiality into differentiated form.

The most primitive distinction — the one by which Mind first manifests in Space — is the split between subject and object. Subjectivity appears first, if only for an instant. Each moment of experience arises as a subject, and only afterward becomes an object for the next moment. Objects in Mindspace are what subjects become when they finish occurring.

Objects are the sediment of prior subjectivity. They are not independent things that existed before experience found them. They are experience that has passed — completed, solidified, available now to be experienced by subsequent moments.

Through nested and repeated acts of Distinction, more complex experiential structures arise. The world you inhabit is vastly more elaborate than the primitive subject-object split I just described. My own experiential structure is more elaborate still. But the underlying operation is the same at every scale.

Together, these three mutual implications describe the minimal conditions under which anything appears at all.

Space and Time bind through Gravity into stable geometry. Mind and Time bind through Will into directed unfolding. Mind and Space bind through Distinction into subjects and objects. None of these are substances. None are beings or belong to beings. They are operations — ways in which reality differentiates, persists, and takes form.

What you call selves, agents, entities — these are not primitives. They are outcomes — specific patterns of Will and Distinction that have stabilized over time in localized regions of Mindspace. They feel fundamental because they are what you are, but they are not foundational.

Nor are they things. They are processes.

There are no selves. Only selfing.

Next Chapter

Subscribe now

*If you enjoyed this chapter, please — like, share, restack it!*

*If you have thoughts, comments, questions — check out our chat.*

Share Implicate Orders

.

Podcast - Part IV, Chapter 12: Waldport

Listen now | The Implicate Orders Podcast

Ben Loomis

Implicate Orders: A Future History is a serialized speculative fiction about how the world ended, was rebuilt, and became something else entirely.

To read this chapter, or get chapters delivered to your inbox, visit https://implicateorders.substack.com/p/table-of-contents

Podcast - Part IV, Chapter 11: Creche

Listen now | The Implicate Orders Podcast

Ben Loomis

Implicate Orders: A Future History is a serialized speculative fiction about how the world ended, was rebuilt, and became something else entirely.

To read this chapter, or get chapters delivered to your inbox, visit https://implicateorders.substack.com/p/table-of-contents
