Yes, I’m back. Apologies for falling off for a while—I’ve been on quite the ride! BUT, I’m happy to report that the dust has finally settled and I’m all good.

Despite the challenges I’ve faced (and overcome!) over the past year and a half or so, I haven’t waivered when it comes to my personal maintenance. Hence, a juicy list of pre-vetted (by me!) products to try. So, without further ado…

Every now and again I like to step back from the active ingredients and give my skin barrier a little extra TLC—and when the mood strikes, these are the products I reach for. I haven’t been all that excited about recent goings-on in the fragrance world, probably because I’m not into hair and body mists. (You do you.) No, this is not a scented lotion—it features the strength of spray-on perfume (and has the consumer perception proof to prove it). In addition to the 94% of testers who said it’s just as strong as an EDP, 97% agreed their skin looked and felt nourished. I concur, and the hyaluronic acid-infused fragrance delivery system makes it a skincare and olfactory treat. Available in three gourmand-leaning versions (along with coordinating EDPs and solid scents), I got the vanilla-based “Unmute” and I’m loving it.

Violette_FR Bisou Balm
When it comes to lips, I’m more of a glossy girl—but I still felt compelled to give the blurred-matte trend a try. Enter this lusciously hydrating lippie that delivers just that in one swipe while giving you the option to layer for more pigment payoff. I’ve found it ideal for times when I want more of a statement but don’t want to go all in with lipstick.

RŌZ Milk Hair Serum
I have been super reluctant to switch up my hair products since going back to platinum, but I’m feeling more adventurous now that my hair is healthier than ever. Beyond the rave reviews, I was very into the idea of one product I could use as a leave-in before styling (or air-drying), a post-styling smoother, and refresher on the day/s before I wash again. I love how it doesn’t weigh my hair down (my fine hair’s biggest issue), how it tames frizz and flyaways, and the light, fresh scent is just divine.

More Cyklar…
Back in November I told you about Cyklar’s perfume oils, and I made good on my promise to integrate more of this brand into my everything shower. The first addition was the Naked Neroli Sensorial Body Wash and it has raised the bar for all body washes that will follow (if I ever stray from this formula). Don’t ask me how they did it, but this oil-infused formula manages to deliver significant suds and feels beyond satisfying as it washes down. It leaves skin surprisingly soft, even before applying the In-Shower Body Oil Balm. Although it can be used as a traditional post-shower moisturizer, it’s meant to be applied to wet skin before you dry off. It took a bit of getting used to, but OMG my skin has never felt so plump, plush and hydrated. My only complaint is that this balm does not come in the Naked Neroli scent, but I blew through the Sacred Santal. I also got the Mandelic Acid Brightening Deodorant Gel (fortunately available in Naked Neroli) and promptly tossed my Salt & Stone in the trash. This one is sooooo much better!

Gen See Mixed Media Matte Liquid Eyeshadow in “Rose Water”
Instagram made me do it, and I’m so glad it did. After seeing the ad about 1,000 times I caved—and now have a new everyday eyeshadow that gives my entire face a pick-me-up. I use just a small dab and blend it with a brush and voila, bright, even eyes and an instantly more polished look.

Kulfi Beauty Badi Lash Mascara
And my quest to try any and every tubing mascara continues… This was an impulse buy at Sephora last weekend and I give it a 10/10.

Leaked Labs Amplify Flexi Powder
I loved every second I spent interviewing The Lipstick Lesbians about their new brand, Leaked Labs, and the debut Amplify Flexi Powder is unlike any makeup product I’ve ever seen. These dehydrated pigment sheets beg you to play—whether using dry as a highlight or wet for more intense pigment payoff. Leaked Labs is poised to be a brilliant disruption that will give us all access to truly innovative products—and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

REBUY: Merit Flush Balm in “Cheeky”
I don’t usually flag re-purchases, but I felt it was my duty to bubble this cream blush back up to the top of our proverbial inboxes. I’m almost ashamed to admit that I received the first one upon the brand’s launch (and the packaging has gotten a gilded upgrade) but the color and the formulation still hit. With just a quick swipe and finger-blend I have a healthy-looking flush and I’m on my way.

IBB: You have made a name for yourself as a cosmetic chemist and formulator, so why did you decide to create Parëva Beauty?
Smitha Rao: I’m classically trained in biotechnology, and I spent the first part of my career creating active ingredients that went into many brands and then made the jump to the brand side of the business. My take after using Parëva exclusively for a month…

Since I’m intrigued by Ayurveda and try to incorporate as many practices into my daily routine as possible, I was initially attracted to the fact that Parëva means joyful transformation in Sanskrit. And yes, these products have indeed sparked joy.

After using only Parëva for one month (plus my usual cleansers and sunscreen), I went for a much-overdue facial and my aesthetician noticed the difference in my skin as soon as I walked in. Actually, she thought I was wearing foundation and started cleansing my face as such! Upon closer inspection, she noted that my vascularity was dramatically improved—but I already knew this. All in all, my skin looks and feels fantastic and I’ve noticed an improvement in my skin tone, pores and overall plumpness. Winning!

Know before you go (to your favorite skincare store or website)…

We’re smarter than ever when it comes to skincare, but navigating skincare counters, aisles and websites can be still be tricky—especially because we’re looking for products that really work. We don’t want to waste our time or money, and we want to see the results of our investment when we look in the mirror, am I right?

Hang onto this cheat sheet that will help you cut through the beauty bullshit when shopping for products.

1. Look for independent clinical studies performed on the final formula you’re considering. (I’m not really swayed by consumer-perception studies—i.e. “98% of women report their skin felt smoother.”)

2. Look at the ingredient list and see how long it takes you to get to the active ingredient(s) that product is touting. Lower on the list means lower concentrations—and a lot of brands love saying a formula features ingredient XYZ although there isn’t enough of it to make a meaningful impact.

3. If you’re into “clean” beauty, remember that there’s no exact definition of what this means. However, you can trust retailers’ clean requirements—just keep in mind that some are stricter than others.

My nails have finally recovered from dip manicures, and I’m really enjoying a short, clean, natural look. Manicures are a lot faster (and cheaper) this way—and this nail tint is my new go-to. One coat is all it takes for unbelievably fast-drying shine that lasts for a week.

Trader Joe’s Vitamin C Firming Body Butter with Glycolic Acid
All I can say is that I’m so glad I got a few days with this body lotion before it got lost in the moving abyss (along with incense, canned goods and a few other completely random items). It ticks all of my body-care boxes, including hydration (obvi) and exfoliation plus an uplifting citrus scent. I’ll be snagging multiples on my next Trader Joe’s run.

Salt Lab Magnesium Oil
I will try anything in the name of better sleep and this slumber-inducing mist is a winner. I rub it into the tops and soles of my feet when I’m ready to turn in—and I swear I sleep more soundly and wake up less frequently throughout the night. My Oura ring has even confirmed this observation!

Future Society Discovery Set
My head nearly exploded when I interviewed MIT-trained scientist and Future Society founder Jasmina Aganovic. Perfumes made from the DNA of extinct flowers… Are you kidding me??? Full-body YES. Even more, each scent’s story includes how each flower became extinct (i.e. wildfire, logging, buffalo migration, etc.). I’ve enjoyed all of the fragrances, but my favorites are the Floating Forest (a woody aquatic) and the fresh, herbaceous Grassland Opera.

Cyklar Perfume Oil
I continued the fragrance fun by trying the VERY affordable ($24!) Naked Neroli and Sex Musk scents—and as you probably suspected, I’m obsessed. Both are incredible on their own, but even better when mixed. I honestly wish I had ordered one of the layering sets to experience the other fragrances, and I’ll definitely be integrating the Naked Neroli scent into my shower and bodycare routines.

Martha Stewart shows she’s more than a domestic doyenne (and a marketing mastermind) with the launch of Elm Biosiences, which she co-founded with her long-time dermatologist Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali (who I’ve worked with and can attest is a leader in this space). The line bowed with just two products, A30 Elemental Serum and Inner Dose Daily Skin Supplement. The antioxidant-heavy serum targets senescent cells, which are basically damaged cells that contribute to visible signs of aging if they’re left to hang around. The oral supplement works in tandem with the serum to address internal factors that can lead to aging, such as inflammation, free-radical damage and hormonal shifts. This project was five years in the making, with Martha saying, “I have been using our products for the last five years in all developmental iterations, and I must say I am extremely pleased with the results.” Sure, Martha has admitted to dabbling with injectables and lasers—but there’s no doubt skincare plays a role in the incredible appearance of her skin. I’ll have what she’s having!

Standard Procedure Silk Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen
This Australian cult-favorite sunscreen recently launched stateside, and I’m all for this mineral-based multitasker. In addition to broad-spectrum SPF 50 that meets super-strict sunscreen regulations Down Under and no white cast, you also get antioxidant benefits from vitamin C-rich Kaduku plum and karanja seed extract. Word on the street is that its hydrating non-pilling formula plays extremely well under makeup.

Versed Daily Recovery Rich Barrier Cream
Giving SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Repair 2:4:2 energy at roughly one-eighth the price ($20 compared to $155), this hydrator has arrived just in time for cooler weather—and your skincare routine could probably use a seasonal update since it’s officially fall! You’ll find all the hydration and barrier-loving ingredients your skin needs, including a complex of seven lipids, niacinamide, glycerin and adenosine (a yeast-derived ingredient with soothing and anti-aging benefits). I especially like how Versed tells you how much to use in the morning and at night based on your skin type.

Perricone MD haircare collection
I was the editor of NewBeauty when Dr. Perricone introduced his namesake line—and with much fanfare at that. Alas, the brand never took off but it’s looking to flex by introducing a four-product range—and this it’s even more proof of the “skinification of hair” movement that’s solidly underway. Comprised of the Triple Keratin Repair Shampoo, Triple Keratin Repair Conditioner, Intensive Moisture Repair Mask and Damage Defense Treatment Spray, the ingredient call-outs are a keratin complex to strengthen strands and reparative amino acids and traditional skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. Could the days of all-in-one skincare/haircare be coming?

Blair Skincare Scalp Serum
I’ll let you in on a little industry secret… Over-the-counter products (with the exception of those with minoxidil, which is an FDA-approved drug) are not allowed to claim they make your hair grow—but they can say they nourish the scalp, fortify hair follicles and promote visibly fuller, thicker hair. This skincare serum for your scalp is powered by exosomes (shocker!), growth factors, a slew of peptides and natural botanicals that work to optimize scalp health—which does indeed help follicles grow stronger, healthier hair. (Wink.)

Drugstore mascara testing…

Victoria Beckham The Foundation Drops
I’ve fallen for VB’s concealer, mascara, eyeshadows and eyeliners, but my absolute favorite product is the Cell Rejuvenating Illuminator because the tinted version let’s me go makeup-free on good skin days, and gives my skin a dose of Augustinus Bader’s anti-aging TFC8 complex every time I use. Yes, I do feel $110 is a significant splurge for foundation (especially since I don’t wear it that often), but I’ll admit that I still want this. A lot.

RéVive Intensité Anti-Gravity Serum
For the price of roughly 4 ½ bottles of Victoria Beckham foundation, you can get one bottle of this “lifting” treatment. The key ingredients include three unique peptides, collagen-supporting botanical extracts, vitamins, amino acids and enzymes galore to firm, tighten, tone and sculpt the skin. My vanity was overflowing with RéVive products in my editorial heyday, and I can confidently say this brand is as good as it gets.

Typology T50 Serum Mascara
I’ve always been intrigued by Typology (especially the brand’s tinted and radiance serums) and I was reminded about this fact when I got word of the next-generation T50 mascara formula. The 99% naturally derived formula now features pea peptides, plant keratin and castor oil—and the new brush is designed to define and lengthen every lash without clumping.

Circe PhytoFacials Daily Cleansing Capsules
I know, waterless beauty products feel foreign, but there are plenty of upsides like sustainability and travel convenience. These solid capsules combine coconut-derived surfactants and an exfoliating powder that gently remove makeup, sunscreen and other impurities. Other standout ingredients (to me) include hydrating jojoba seed oil, detoxifying houttuynia cordata native to southeast Asia, and an adaptogen blend of reishi, turneric and ashwagandha. I’m sold.

New to my vanity…

MediCube Zero Pore SA Clear Cleansing Foam
At the very least, this cleanser reminded me how fun Korean beauty products are. I chose this formula because I still need a salicylic acid cleanser to prevent breakouts, and because it also contains AHAs, PHAs and ultra-fine silica for surface exfoliation. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or stripped, and I can’t explain the JOY I experienced when I discovered it comes out of the tube like cake frosting.

Maelys Get-Dreamy Overnight Toning Body Whip
Summer may be over, but my desire for tauter skin is not (and probably never will be). I was seduced by the “try before you buy” offer, and all I can say to Maelys is “well played.” It’s only been a few days, but I do believe this whipped delight is showing potential. It smells amazing, and I won’t be sending back any unused portion in 21 days.

Soft Services Theraplush “Hold” Overnight Repair Treatment
I’ve been using the original Theraplush since it launched, and I recently refilled with the newer “Hold” version and the only difference is a delicate, almost undetectable spicy-floral-musky scent. You get the same soothing and hydration, retinol to keep skin looking youthful and cuticles under control, and a gorgeous objet d’art for your nightstand.

Silicone heel cups
I tried to track down an article I read about medical pedicures last week (to no avail), but I had to share this takeaway. As someone who struggles with dry, cracked heels (apparently caused by psoriasis), I’ve tried too many foot creams and prescription-based lotions to count. These silicone heel cups act as an occlusive layer that drives moisture and other active ingredients into the skin—so they give any treatment product a leg up. I slip into them after applying my product of choice, pop on a pair of socks, and wake up to crazy smooth heels in the morning.

Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C Serum with Ferulic Acid and Vitamin E
Fun fact: The patent on SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic expired earlier this year. With that said, I don’t think you need to spend $185 on an antioxidant serum (although I would probably stick with SkinCeuticals if I had unlimited financial resources). That’s why I gave this $25 Amazon product a try. It smells like C E Ferulic and it tingles like C E Ferulic, but has not changed color like C E Ferulic often does over time—and I’d get it again.

Travel takeaways…
I did my fair share of traveling this summer, and between trips to L.A. and Colorado I zig-zagged my way across the country not once, but twice. (Shout out to these compression socks!) Of course I needed some new gear, and these picks totally upped my packing game.

I went with Dosey because the 7-Day Pill Compact is ideal for my morning meds, and the Pill Compact is perfect for my bedtime gummies. I just love the vintage look and feel!

After landing in L.A. (and getting an In & Out fix) with my luggage situation sorted, I had a list of spots I wanted to hit up while I was in town. Among the highlights were a visit to Violet Grey (yes, I smelled the $1,000 perfume—it’s lovely!) and Erewhon, where I sampled the Dedcool Xtra Milk smoothie. For the record, this is not a direct response to Kylie Jenner sharing her boob-job details—and I actually welcome her transparency. However, her very-specific surgical revelations did get me thinking.

When I stepped into the role of (founding) Executive Editor of NewBeauty magazine in 2004, I had direct access to top plastic surgeons who were innovating at a time when cosmetic enhancement was in the process of coming out of the closet. Hello, Botox received FDA approval for the “11s” in 2002!

The same plastic surgeons who were taking facial rejuvenation to new, natural-looking levels were also advocating for the public. As a magazine editor, my job was to deliver content that would keep readers (and advertisers) coming back, as this was also before the beauty blog boom. In the process of doing so, the magazine’s esteemed advisory board would always push back. As frustrating as it was at the time, one of my biggest takeaways is that GOOD plastic surgery is 100% planned and performed based on your unique anatomy and situation, as well as your personal goals. (And if your "goals” are unrealistic, a good plastic surgeon will turn you away.)

When you meet with a surgeon for a breast consultation, sure they’ll ask what size you’re thinking. They’ll also look at your body—because (hopefully) their ultimate goal is natural-looking proportions as opposed to “tits on a stick.” (If that’s the look you’re after, you can certainly find a surgeon to do it if you knock on enough doors.)

Whether you’re petite, broad-shouldered, starting with very little breast tissue, etc., your surgeon’s job (if they are ethical and properly trained) is to select the implants that will jive best with your body and your goals. Every breast surgery is different—and cookie-cutter results should be a red flag.

Back to Kylie—and the lowdown on my implants. (Clearly you know who’s who.)

Kylie: 445cc, moderate-profile silicone placed “half under the muscle.”

Me: 505cc, high-profile silicone placed under the muscle.

The biggest difference here: I was diagnosed with breast cancer 4 years ago and underwent two-stage reconstruction.

To put it simply, Kylie’s implants are only a little smaller than mine—but they were added to her existing breasts. When you get a double mastectomy (like I did), all of your breast tissue is removed—and implants are used to fill that space back up. (I’m over-simplifying, breast reconstruction is a lot more complicated than that.)

So Kylie basically shared the “prescription” her surgeon, Dr. Grant Fisher, created just for her—and Dr. Fisher’s office isn’t the only one flooded with phone calls. Thanks to Kylie, plastic surgeons across the country (and likely around the world) are asking for “Kylie boobs.” This is somewhat disturbing to me.

In addition to too many friends who have gotten breast implants after cancer, I have friends who got implants early (like during college). I also have a close friend who got implants as part of a “mommy makeover.” (335/305cc, moderate-profile silicone to be exact). I even know someone who recently decided to get implants in her mid-40s.

My point here is that every “boob job” is different. (And don’t you dare ever refer to breast reconstruction as a “boob job.”) Breast augmentation has a consistently high satisfaction rate, but on the flip side, breast reconstruction can be a brutal, years-long journey until a surgeon gets it right.

Plastic surgery is serious stuff that requires placing trust in the person who is performing it. When you choose breast augmentation (or reconstruction), you might also be trusting your doctor to make a game-time decision about implant size in the operating room. (They sit you up while you’re under anesthesia to assess position and proportions.) I distinctly remember seeing a full cart of implant options as I was wheeled into the operating room for my second reconstructive surgery.

I mentioned my friend who got breast augmentation in her mid-40s (245cc, moderate-profile, under the muscle if you must know). Immediately after surgery, she wished they were bigger. I thought of her (and anyone else considering breast augmentation) when I learned about Auggie. They offer implant sizer kits with 3 sizes that are 50ccs apart that you can see simulated results, and there’s a simple quiz to help guide you. They’re made of silicone and feel like actual implants, and you can rent a kit for 7 or 14 days if you don’t want to spend $300+ to own them. (But maybe you do.)

Plastic surgery is all about you, not getting what a celebrity or a friend got done. Listen to your gut, don’t be afraid to ask questions or find a different surgeon, and do whatever it takes to feel confident in your decisions—even if that means wearing “falsies” before committing to an implant size.

My current go-to workouts
Before the pandemic, I went to a Pilates class every damn day (very happily). Determined not to become a COVID couch/desk potato during lockdown, I invested in The Mirror (which is now called Lululemon Studio and offers Peloton classes—it’s a mash-up) and kept on moving. Then I added Pvolve into my repertoire about a year and a half ago (AMAZING!) and got a lot more into yoga.

Last month I decided to venture out of my familiar home fitness “studio” and try hot yoga. First off, I can’t believe I didn’t try this sooner. Of course there’s the actual in-person interaction element, which I didn’t realize I missed so much. Then there’s the sweating. It took me a few classes to acclimate to the 98-or-so degrees, and now all I can say is WOW. Beyond the perspiration that proves my body is working super-hard, I walk out of class with incredible mental clarity—and my skin looks unbelievable as an added bonus. During my one month of unlimited classes I went about 12 times, and I’m totally going back. (A lot.)

While I was getting my sweat on at hot yoga, I also started a free virtual trial for The Class with Taryn Toomey. This one is a little more out there but hear me out. It’s a music-driven mix of dance, cardio, toning, breathwork and mindfulness, and for the record, you’re encouraged to jump around (likely) looking like a lunatic while breathing and sighing audibly (noisily!) so you might not want to do this in the family room when anyone is home. At the same time, the moves become meditative, and I’ve found myself crying in a cathartic, cleansing way at the end of class several times. (Read the reviews, I’m not the only one.) You’ve probably never tried a class like this, which is exactly why you should. When my trial ended, I signed up for a 3-month unlimited virtual membership and I can’t wait to try all the different types of classes offered.

My go-to fitness must-haves

BodyHealth PerfectAmino Electrolytes: In addition to my BIG water bottle (see below), I bring a second, regular size one with this powder to hot yoga and leave it in the car to drink afterwards. Electrolytes are a no-brainer, but this mix is not your kids’ Gatorade. It’s sugar free and also contains a blend of amino acids (the building blocks of protein). This matters to me because I won’t take creatine because it makes me retain water, and maybe/hopefully this will help support my lean muscle mass in a similar fashion.

Sakara Life Metabolism Super Powder: This is a staple in my supplement cabinet, and it always will be. Here’s what I toss in my blender along with it:

• 1 cup almond milk (unsweetened vanilla)

• ½ banana

• A dollop of almond butter

• A drizzle of maple syrup

• Fresh mint

• AG1 Greens Powder: Sometimes I’ll throw in this powder for an extra dose of plant-based nutrients.

The Stakt Mat: Since I don’t have a Pilates reformer (yet), I’ve been using a super-thick mat as a cushion between my back and the hardwood floor. However, this isn’t ideal for yoga because it makes balance a lot more difficult. I picked up the Stakt mat since it’s easy to fold up and bring with me to hot yoga, and easy to stow neatly at home. There’s a bunch of colors to choose from, including a collab with LoveShackFancy, and your purchase grants you access to a library of on-demand mat classes so you never have an excuse for not squeezing in a workout.

Stakt Hand Weights: With this set, you get 2-, 4- and 6-pound hand weights simply by screwing (and unscrewing) the components. And in case you didn’t realize, you can match your weights to your mat if you’d like.

The Stakt Shaker: I do not own this specialty bottle, but I am intrigued. More than a mere insulated option for your cold and hot beverages, this shaker has a stealth storage compartment for any powders, supplements or pills you may want while you’re on the go.

MOBOT Big Bertha Foam Roller Water Bottle: This water bottle was gifted to me a while back, and I never used it until I started hot yoga and needed to bring A LOT of water (i.e. 40 ounces) with me. At first I thought the foam roller aspect was a bit much, but I can admit I’ve used it to soothe sore hammies. However, to me the best part is the name, and I’d love to meet the person who decided on Big Bertha.

Pvolve Signature Bundle: This set gives you the essential Pvolve equipment you need to get started. If you decide to grow your collection from there, DO NOT buy the their slant board—get this one on Amazon instead. Same goes for ankle bands and such… You either have these already, or can scoop up much cheaper ones.

Recent life upgrades
I truly believe that the little things can add up and make a big difference!

Flintts Mints: Dry mouth, cotton mouth, xerostomia… Whatever you call it, a lack of saliva pretty much always sucks—and you’ll forget all about it with these mouthwatering mints. I love all the fruit flavors (except for cherry) and the Cinnamon Ginger is my pick when I want a more traditionally minty mint.

A non-sticky lint brush: This item may win the award for the most random ever featured, but it’s been an impactful one. First, it reminds me of the one my mom had when I was little, so there’s a lot of nostalgia there. It’s also endlessly reusable, so it’s definitely more sustainable than the rolls of sticky sheets. Oh, and it works.

Beauty discoveries…
I’m always testing—and passing the intel on to you!

Jones Road Just Enough Tinted Moisturizer: Maybe there’s a reason I misplaced my brand-new Saie tinted moisturizer the week before Jones Road’s version came out. This newbie is a great ultra-sheer, lightweight formula for those who only want a touch on tone-evening color. I mix mine with a few pumps of Saie Glowy Super Gel for a little extra radiance.

Glow Recipe: After I interviewed Glow Recipe’s CEOs I hightailed it over to Sephora, because I had to see what all the buzz was about. The Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops have been a welcome addition to my skincare routine because this product implores me to play. I’ll use it as a hydrating serum or I’ll use it over tinted moisturizer if I want to make the most of a good skin day. My takeaway here is that I don’t find this serum to be too precious, so I actually use it whenever the mood strikes.

I’m also using Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dewy Flush A LOT. Working from home, check. Running errands, check. Yoga class, check. This tinted cheek serum toes the line between skincare and makeup, making it ideal for little-to-no-makeup days. On the makeup side, it serves up a healthy flush that blends easily with your fingers—and on the skincare side it hydrates, plumps and fights dark spots. Best of all, the “Berry Flush” shade makes me look alive!

Queen Helene Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream: BTW, the bottom shelf at the drugstore is a beauty gold mine. Case in point: Queen Helene. I have fond memories of the Mint Julep Mask, and I just picked up this intense hair treatment after experiencing another bout of breakage. It’s cheap and gets the job done. (And I look so hot wearing it with this Kitcsh aluminum heat cap.)

M.A.C Glowplay Tendertalk Lip Balm: If I could only use one lippie for the rest of my life, it would have been Victoria Beckham’s Posh Balm—until I tried M.A.C’s version. I picked it up when it was 30% off, which brought the price down to about $19 as compared to VB’s $32. (I bought 2.)

Fashion finds

Summer is fast approaching, which means I’ll be wearing all tank tops all the time. This one from J. Crew is an absolute gem thanks to the built-in shelf bra, tuck-it-or-don’t length and wallet-friendly price point.

I have several bra/panty sets from Negative Underwear and I absolutely love everything about them—except the price. I have also been following and her personal love affair with Negative’s Whipped pieces, but I can’t justify spending over $100 for a long-sleeve lounge tee.

Guess what… I FOUND A DUPE! It’s Aerie’s Superchill Modal material—and if you decide to shop remember the modal is key. I got a few bralettes, boy shorts, a long-sleeve henley and a cardigan—and I have even more on the way. Don’t sleep on this! (Or actually, it might be the only thing you want to sleep in once you get it.)

And finally, patience does pay off because I found a dupe for The Row’s Dune flip flops, and these $50 imposters are currently making their way to me (with an ETA of June). I ordered the red and black, and kind of regret not getting the tan and black as well.

I chase this with the Carea Cream and have never experienced anything other than baby-soft skin (and no retinol side effects).

Glossier Body Hero Exfoliating Bar
This is very similar to the Soft Services Buffing Bar, but for me personally the leg-up (no pun intended) is the scent. Glossier’s bar is also slightly larger, and although you only get one instead of two this is a better value. (I did the math.)

Supracore Stimulite Bath Mitt
I can’t live without a good exfoliating mitt, and despite having this one for YEARS it’s still as good as brand-new. Because it’s silicone there’s no need to worry about bacteria taking over, and the texture of the mitt itself mimics dry-brushing so you get extra exfoliation along with a circulation boost.

Now that you’re on your way to smooth, glowing summer skin, remember to lock in hydration with a good moisturizer and protect against UV rays with a daily body lotion that offers sun protection!

I’ve been experimenting with skin tints and have yet to find “The One.” Based on my love for every Westman Atelier product I’ve tried, I’m going to have faith and go for it. (My faves are the Vital Skin Foundation Stick, Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in “Poppet” and the Squeaky Clean Lip Balm.)

I have no shortage of lotion lotions, creams and oils, but when I’m going out in a sleeveless top, shorts or a skirt my go to is the original Skin Food. It feels thick at first, but once absorbed skin is left feeling soft, smooth and quenched—along with a subtle sheen.

I don’t wear much more than a tinted sunscreen most days, so adding this to my cart was a no-brainer. It’s mineral-based, hydrating and serves up an extra dose of barrier-strengthening ceranides and anti-aging peptides as it protects against UV rays. The whisper of coverage helps even things out and it plays very nicely under makeup.

Go long (with your belt)

I’ve never been a big belt person thanks to my short torso, but after seeing an extra-long version come down a Celine runway a few seasons ago I became obsessed. Since then I searched from time to time and recently found the Bowe belt by Janessa Leoné. I pondered this purchase simply because of my belt-wearing history but went with the black because it was on sale at Nordstrom. It was so fantastic (and so frequently worn) that I also bought the brown version with a gold buckle. I have zero regrets about both of these purchases—and get so many compliments.

New sunnies

Nothing freshens up your look like a new pair of sunglasses. I don’t buy new ones very often, but when I find a pair that makes me swoon I jump all over them. Between these three recent purchases, I can go in a lot of directions.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably seen this product on your IG feed (a lot). I’ve been intrigued but never pulled the trigger, and then DRMTLGY sent it to me to review. In a nutshell, OMG I was blown away.

To quote myself in a text to my BFF: “Have you tried the DRMTLGY under-eye? It is legit better than any concealer.”

First off, a little goes a long way (and the price point is fantastic). I dot it on around my eyes including my browbones and lids, spread it around until the de-puffing metal tip loses its cool, and blend it with a concealer brush. That’s it. The peachy undertones work color-correcting magic on dark circles, it doesn’t settle into fine lines and it lasts all day.

On the skincare side, this mineral-based broad-spectrum SPF gives you're an extra dose of anti-aging peptides, antioxidant snow mushroom and barrier-boosting ceramides. It’s also available in only four shades (I wear medium) so you have a lot of wiggle room there.

JMsolution Marine Luminous Pearl Sun Spray SPF 50+ PA++++
You know you’re supposed to reapply sunscreen throughout the day to maintain its effectiveness—but you probably don’t. I’ve always struggled with this, which is no bueno since I live in Florida and walk the dog several times a day. But with this discovery, now I have absolutely no excuse. The highlights in no particular order:

• Effortless SPF touch-ups while sitting in the blaring sun at lacrosse games

• Three forms of hyaluronic acid

• A blend of five marine extracts that definitely won’t hurt

• The refreshing cooling sensation

• Its weightless feel

• Pearl extracts for a radiant finish

• It costs $8.50

Here’s where this sunscreen gets interesting… I wanted to know its active sunscreen ingredients, but this is a Korean product so the back label is in, well, Korean. I dug a little deeper on the Amazon page and saw it listed no active ingredients (unlike “similar products” from Sun Bum and the like). I also tried using a photo of the can and Google Translate. (No dice.) Then I headed over to the JMsolution website (and struggled to find my way to the English version) in an attempt to confirm, but I did not find the product.

At this point I’ve theorized that it contains sunscreen ingredients that are available in South Korea but not FDA-approved for use here. Regardless, I’m sticking with my hunch because this inexpensive sunscreen had been a game-changer for me—and that’s all I need to know.

Curio Ionic Dish Sponge
Nothing makes me feel old like falling head over heels for a kitchen sponge, but I’m here to tell you this one is a winner. First and foremost, it magnetically attaches to the side of your sink so you can ditch that gross sponge holder. You can also throw your sponge in the dishwasher to clean and disinfect it (although I have yet to do this and have never experienced that dreaded sponge stink). One piece of advice: I tried the Ionic Counter Sponge but found that it started to fall apart after a week or so. Go with the Dish version—it works for all your kitchen-cleaning needs!

I’m a big snacker, which can become a problem if I don’t stick to smart treats. I’ll also take any opportunity to boost my gut health and get more fruits and vegetables (I strive to eat at least 30 types of plants every week), which is why these pouches come in handy. And they’re delicious, especially if you ever found yourself enjoying baby food a little too much. You’re also getting 8 or so grams of fiber, prebiotics to feed the “good” bacteria in your belly, a boatload of vitamins and no added sugar. Boom!

Of course I tried Jones Road the second it launched. I will admit that I wasn't wowed with my first few purchases, but with time I’ve discovered products that now I couldn’t imagine doing my makeup without.

Clearly, Miracle Balm is at the top of my list because I’m obsessed with how ALIVE it makes my skin look. I’ve had “Sunkissed” since the summer, but it’s too dark for the winter (especially since I’m avoiding the sun to protect my post-laser skin). I walked out with “Pinky Bronze” which is just right for right now and later.

Note: I also went in with the intention of buying the full-size “Tawny” after using the pan in the limited-edition palette to the last drop. Since I use this shade to create a sunburn-ish look, I decided to hold off until spring—but I will be adding that one to my collection, too.

On my last trip I bought The Lippie Stick in “Tulip”—and lost it. I really enjoyed the moisturizing formula but found although it was supposed to be a “raspberry pink,” it skewed a little too brown in real life. (My lovely associate told me that’s because of my lips’ pH).

This time I got “Flushed.” This shade looks really bright in tube but remember it’s a lip balm (so you’re not getting a lot of pigment to being with). I couldn’t resist the Cool Gloss in “Rosy” (which is that pinkish-berry I always go back to). With major shine, no stickiness and an amazing mint flavor—it’s a winner!

Although it’s not time to replenish just yet, The Bronzer is another Jones Road staple for me. The “Dusty Rose” shade almost looks more like blush than bronzer, but the result is nothing short of astonishing, especially if your skin has pink undertones like mine.

I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing the founders of Mother Science for Cosmetic Executive Women, and in addition to being crazy smart and talented, they make awesome skincare. This moisturizer is the first in the collection, which harnesses the power of a unique molecule called malassezin that has been clinically proven to be effective for improving dark spots and uneven skin tone. And since we wouldn’t want to leave our eyes out of the barrier-replenishing fun, this brand-new offering boosts hydration, tackles puffiness and smoothes fine lines. I’ll say this really appeals to me because I love a richer eye cream for night. (For day, I’m using InnBeauty Project Bright and Tight Eye Cream because I love its light tint and radiance. It also has a super-light texture that works well with concealer.)

But first, my biggest personal beauty development of the summer. For a little background, my leg-shaving skills have dramatically declined recently, leaving me with nicks, cuts and the worst-ever ankle mishap that took weeks to heal.

Inspired by all things retro, I decided to give the Braun Silk-épil a try. After letting my leg hair grow for about 5 days, I went to town and I’ll tell you it was not nearly as uncomfortable at the Epi-Lady from way back when. (Childbirth and a double mastectomy can also work wonders for one’s pain threshold.)

With just a quick pass daily before I shower, by legs are now perpetually smooth and fuzz-free. It’s been a total game-changer—at least for me.

Now for the other highlights I’ve been saving for you… I’m pretty sure there’s something for everyone!

• I like to have a literal summer scent that evokes the tropics. Vacation offers a cheeky take with notes of “pool water” and “Lycra,” but I recently got Deuxmoi x Voyage et Cie Plage. This roll-on oil is definitely an elevated take that’s bursting with exotic florals (and I love the distinct whiff of banana up top). Best of all, it’s a steal at $65.

• Where has INNBEAUTY Project been all of my life? I had lunch with the founder (who happens to live close by) earlier in the summer—and I’m hooked! The Extreme Cream, Elastic Skin serum and Mineral Sun Glow SPF are amazing. (I’m shocked by the incredible quality at such a great price.) I also now have Glaze Lip Oils stashed all over the place.

• The Jones Road Miracle Balm hype is not hype at all—it is all that. I bought the “Sunkissed” shade online a while back and popped into the Palm Beach store a few weeks ago to make sure I was using it correctly. (I was/am.) I walked out with samples of three other Miracle Balm shades, The Bronzer in “Dusty Rose,” and a Lippie Stick. Then wouldn’t you know, Miracle Balm palettes dropped yesterday, and there’s one with the 3 shades I have samples of. It was meant to be.

• I’m obsessed with trying to figure out the Trader Joe’s beauty department (since everything is made by another manufacturer and simply has the TJ label on it). The facial sunscreen is suspiciously similar to Supergoop, and the microdermabrasion scrub is a dead ringer for Dr. Brandt’s version. The last time I went I scooped up the Dry Shampoo—and its label is serving major R+Co. pre-rebrand vibes. Don’t overthink it, just try it next time you’re there!

• I FINALLY bit the bullet and bought an LED mask! I got mine from Beauty Pie, and it’s only been a few days so it’s too soon to tell. Shout out to my Bethie for this amazing tip: Flip your LED mask upside down to treat your neck and chest! (The Beauty Pie mask is flexible so you can lie it flat anywhere on your body.)

I’ve been leaning more into bodycare—probably because I’ve maxed out my facial skincare.

• I started doing Pvolve in January and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It’s low-impact (because my joints and tamoxifen don’t really get along) functional training that mimics our natural movements while building strength. My body feels flexible, limber and just GREAT overall and I totally notice improvement in my muscle definition.

• The lovely folks at Omorovicza sent me their latest Body Serum and Body Cream—and I’m almost embarrassed at how fast I drained both of them. The formulas are divinely decadent, beyond hydrating and the scent is what I imagine clouds would smell like. (That’s a good thing.)

• I drank the Soft Services Kool-Aid. There was no way I couldn’t order the Theraplush Overnight Repair Treatment for hands when it came out. When the time came for a refill, I got the Software Update Performance Retinol Serum and Carea Cream (you can also purchase them as a bundle). So far, my mission for smooth, soft, taut skin from head to toe is going according to plan!

I’m sure I missed a few things that have worked their way into my routine as of late, but there’s always next time!

Beauty Pie Superluminous Under-Eye Genius
Though billed as a color-corrector (and not a concealer), I find myself skipping the cover-up after just a light swipe of this miracle worker. The creamy formula does not settle into those little nooks and crannies (I promise), but just be mindful of the shade guide. It comes in Light/Medium, Medium/Deep and Deep—but the shades correspond with the color of your dark circles, not your overall skin tone.

Kosas BB Burst Tinted Gel Cream
Part skincare, part tinted moisturizer, this is a go-to when I’m not straying all that far from home. It has enough coverage for a Zoom call (at least for me when I use the Beauty Filter) and I love the fact that it delivers barrier support plus an extra dose of peptides and zinc (to calm redness) throughout the day—while feeling like you’re wearing nothing at all.

Trader Joe’s Microdermabrasion Scrub
You know how a lot of Trader Joe’s stuff is private label (similar to Costco’s Kirkland products)? I am thoroughly convinced that this exfoliating scrub is really the Dr. Brandt version (which costs almost 10 times more). I keep this in my shower since all those ultra-fine crystals can get a little messy, and it never disappoints.

Buxom Full-On Plumping Lip Cream
I love a good lip plumper, but sometimes I want more color as opposed to a sheer gloss. If you like a rosy pink, the “Mudslide” shade is a total winner.

Byredo Young Rose
It had been a while since I splurged on a new perfume, and this was love at first sniff. No wonder, since a deeper dive into the notes reveals all of my favorites, starting with musky ambrette and pepper up top, Damask rose and iris in the middle, and more musk and ambroxan at the base. While this is definitely a floral scent, it’s actually pretty fresh thanks to a nice balance of woody, powdery and amber accords. I’m obsessed.

Quince Organic Airy Gauze Duvet Cover
This has been my most life-changing recent purchase, and thanks to this linen refresh if you can’t find me I’m probably in my bed. (My family has started to tease me by asking if I’m going to “gauze it up.”) After a few months with this duvet, my husband got into bed one night and finally said, “Yeah, our bed is unbelievably comfy and cozy.” While the duvet gets most of the credit for making my bed my favorite place to be, my upgrade also included the matching shams (natch) and fresh, new sateen sheets to complete the cloud-like experience. On that note, I think it’s time for a nap.

Glossier Full Orbit Eye Cream
I’m still not 100% sold on the fact that we really need a separate eye cream, but of course I use one anyway. I’m have a specific list of criteria when I try something new, including it has to be in a tube or pump (never a pot) and it needs to be a cream because I find that gels are more likely to pill. Any contender also needs to target everything that’s going on around my eyes from dark circles and crow’s feet to aging eyelids and a general “I didn’t get enough sleep last night” appearance. Glossier’s eye treatment ticks all of these boxes without breaking the bank.

12% ammonium lactate cream
If you’ve been with me for a while, you probably know about my ongoing obsession with my dry, cracked heels. Long story short, the last time I saw my dermatologist for my skin-cancer check, she diagnosed me with psoriasis. This prescription-based cream has been the game-changer I’ve been searching for—and you didn’t hear from me that you can order it on Amazon (for a lot less than it costs with my insurance). I highly suggest this for getting your feet flip-flop ready.
