Hace ya cinco años, mientras navegaba una noche calurosa de verano por el catálogo de Netflix, me topé con Ya no estoy aquí, una película mexicana que inmediatamente llamó mi atención.

En la portada salía el rostro de perfil de un chico con un peinado de lo más peculiar y, sin pensarlo dos veces y sin saber nada de la trama, le di al play. Enseguida me vi sumergido en un mundo que era para mí totalmente desconocido, a pesar de que hablamos el mismo idioma y de que incluso había paseado por las calles de Monterrey (ciudad donde tiene lugar la película) durante una temporada que viví en México.

En la película, un grupo de adolescentes que se hacen llamar Los Terkos bailan al son de una cumbia1 muy lenta, visten de una manera llamativa y hacen gestos extraños con las manos. Sin darme cuenta, estaba adentrándome en la subcultura Kolombia, quedando desde entonces fascinado por ella.

Kolombia con K hace referencia a una subcultura urbana que nace en los barrios periféricos a través de la mezcla de diferentes culturas con el paso de los años, hasta crear una identidad propia en Monterrey, en el norte de México.

El origen de este fenómeno se puede remontar a finales de los años sesenta y principios de los setenta, cuando los géneros musicales de la cumbia y el vallenato2, originarios de Colombia, empiezan a llegar a la ciudad de Monterrey a través de discos importados de Ciudad de México y Houston. Una década después empiezan a surgir los grupos locales, que adaptan estos ritmos a las características propias de Monterrey. Algunas voces destacadas de esta década son Celso Piña o la Tropa Colombiana.

Es a partir de entonces cuando se empieza a definir lo que realmente caracteriza a la subcultura Kolombia: la cumbia rebajada y la estética cholombiana.

La cumbia rebajada hace referencia a un sonido que nació de manera accidental y que cambió la forma de entender la cumbia original en los barrios de Monterrey. La leyenda cuenta que Gabriel Dueñez, un sonidero3 conocido en la ciudad, estaba tocando su música cuando, debido al calor, la tornamesa sufrió una especie de fallo técnico que hizo que sonara más lenta de lo habitual. El error tardó varias semanas en arreglarse, y en ese tiempo el público se enganchó a esa versión rebajada de las canciones. Así nació un estilo propio de la región que, junto con la estética, define bien lo que es esta subcultura.

La estética cholombiana, el otro eje central de este movimiento, es una mezcla de dos palabras: cholo, que designa a un joven de origen latino ligado a la subcultura de las pandillas, y colombiano. Esta estética está influenciada por la de las pandillas de Estados Unidos (producto de la deportación de muchos jóvenes en la época) y se mezcla con iconografía religiosa y símbolos colombianos. Los rasgos más icónicos incluyen el peinado «patilludo» (grandes patillas moldeadas con gel), ropa muy holgada conocida como «tumbadilla», camisas floreadas y escapularios4 artesanales.

En definitiva, lo Kolombia iba más allá de la estética o el sonido. Era un sistema de pertenencia para muchos jóvenes de los barrios más empinados de Monterrey, como la colonia Independencia o la Loma Larga. En estos barrios, muy alejados del centro moderno tanto en lo económico como en lo social, los jóvenes crearon un microcosmos donde el orgullo de pertenencia iba por delante de cualquier carencia.

Uno de los rituales más importantes de este cosmos eran, sin duda, los bailes públicos. Aquí la figura del sonidero (el DJ encargado de poner las pistas) cobraba una gran relevancia. Era el encargado de poner la música, pero también de lanzar los famosos «saludos», menciones en vivo que para el cholombiano y su pandilla suponían un orgullo máximo. En la pista bailaban el «gavilán» o la «motoneta», con movimientos sueltos y pausados que les dejaban «volar», una sensación que a veces subrayaba el consumo de sustancias.

La subcultura Kolombia era mayoritariamente pacífica, pero su declive comenzó a partir de la segunda mitad de la década de los 2000. En plena «guerra contra el narcotráfico»5, estos jóvenes se convirtieron en objetivo fácil para la policía. Ser cholombiano pasó de ser una marca de orgullo a ser un símbolo de sospecha criminal. La policía los detenía de manera arbitraria y los humillaba con regularidad, cortándoles las patillas y el cabello, tan característicos de su estética.

A raíz de este acoso, sumado a la inseguridad que empezaba a respirarse en las calles, muchos jóvenes se vieron forzados a abandonar la estética como mecanismo de supervivencia. Hoy, aunque el fenómeno que a principios de siglo reinaba en los barrios de Monterrey ha desaparecido en su forma más pura, la cumbia rebajada salió del estado de Nuevo León: el cine la ha rescatado y suena en circuitos de medio mundo. Para mí, esos jóvenes que se hacían llamar Los Terkos, con una estética de lo más variopinta a la que llegué de casualidad aquella noche de verano, siempre tendrán un lugar en mi lista de reproducción. Five years ago now, scrolling through the Netflix catalogue one hot summer night, I came across Ya no estoy aquí (I’m No Longer Here), a Mexican film that caught my eye.

The cover showed a boy in profile with the most peculiar haircut, and without a second thought, knowing nothing about the plot, I hit play. Within minutes I was lost in a world I knew nothing about, even though we speak the same language, and even though I had once walked the streets of Monterrey, the city where the film is set, during a spell I spent living in Mexico.

In it, a group of teenagers who call themselves Los Terkos dance to a very slow cumbia, dress in striking clothes and make strange gestures with their hands. Without realising it, I was stepping into the Kolombia subculture, and I’ve been fascinated by it ever since.

Kolombia, with a K, is an urban subculture born on the city’s outskirts, where over the years a mix of different cultures grew into an identity of its own, in Monterrey, northern Mexico.

Its origins go back to the late sixties and early seventies, when cumbia and vallenato, both Colombian genres, began reaching Monterrey on records imported from Mexico City and Houston. A decade later, local groups started to appear, adapting these rhythms to Monterrey’s own character. Celso Piña and la Tropa Colombiana are two of the names that stand out from those years.

Around then, the two things that define the Kolombia subculture began to take shape: la cumbia rebajada and the cholombiano look.

La cumbia rebajada, or “slowed-down cumbia”, is a sound born by accident, one that changed how the barrios of Monterrey heard cumbia. As the story goes, Gabriel Dueñez, a well-known sonidero (DJ) in the city, was playing his music when, because of the heat, his turntable developed some kind of fault and started running slower than usual. It took a few weeks to fix, and in that time the crowd grew hooked on this slowed-down version of the songs. That is how the region got a sound of its own, one that, together with the look, sums up what this subculture is.

The cholombiano look, the other pillar of the movement, is a blend of two words: cholo, a young Latino tied to gang subculture, and colombiano. It draws on the style of US gangs (a legacy of the many young people deported in those years) and mixes it with religious imagery and Colombian symbols. Its most iconic features: the patilludo haircut (long sideburns sculpted with gel), very baggy clothes known as tumbadilla, flowery shirts and handmade scapulars.

In the end, Kolombia was about more than a look or a sound. It was a way of belonging for many young people in Monterrey’s steepest hillside barrios, like colonia Independencia or Loma Larga. In these neighbourhoods, far from the modern city centre in both wealth and status, they built a world of their own, where the pride of belonging came before any hardship.

One of this world’s most important rituals was, without doubt, the public dances. Here the sonidero, the DJ in charge of the tracks, took on real importance. He played the music, but he also gave out the famous saludos, live shout-outs that were a point of great pride for a cholombiano and his crew. On the floor they danced the gavilán or the motoneta, loose, unhurried movements that let them “fly”, a feeling drugs sometimes heightened.

The Kolombia subculture was for the most part peaceful, but its decline set in around the second half of the 2000s. In the thick of the “war on drugs”, these young people became an easy target for the police. Being cholombiano went from a badge of pride to a mark of criminal suspicion. The police stopped them at random and humiliated them time and again, cutting off their sideburns and hair, so central to the look, by force.

Between this harassment and the growing sense of danger on the streets, many dropped the look just to get by. Today, though the phenomenon that once ruled Monterrey’s barrios at the turn of the century has vanished in its purest form, la cumbia rebajada has travelled well beyond Nuevo León: film has brought it back, and it plays in clubs half a world away. For me, those kids who called themselves Los Terkos, with the wonderfully motley look I stumbled onto by chance that summer night, will always have a place on my playlist. De Monterrey para el mundo. El mes de agosto está siendo de pausa, por eso estoy menos activo en general por aquí. He estado viajando por España de sur a norte y recargando pilas antes de comenzar una nueva aventura, en un país totalmente nuevo para mí, como profesor de español. Mientras tanto, este mes de agosto os dejo con las recomendaciones un poco anticipadas para los más curiosos, los que en España llamamos culos inquietos, que no pueden parar ni durante las vacaciones de verano.

August has been a quiet month, which is why I've been less active around here in general. I've been traveling across Spain from south to north, recharging before starting a new adventure as a Spanish teacher, in a country that's completely new to me. In September I'll be back with more essays, recommendations and interactive activities. In the meantime, this August I'm leaving you with these slightly early recommendations for the most curious among you — the ones we in Spain call culos inquietos, the restless souls who can't sit still even during the summer holidays.

Una de las propuestas más interesantes que he visto este verano en España ha sido esta miniserie de seis capítulos que transcurre en pleno centro de Barcelona, en el emblemático barrio del Raval. Funciona a modo de thriller, con un ritmo frenético y una trama que gira en torno a uno de los mayores problemas de la España actual (y de tantos otros lugares del mundo): la gentrificación. Los protagonistas son una familia que regenta un restaurante de toda la vida en el corazón de la Ciudad Condal1. Sin embargo, los planes de un fondo de inversión para el barrio, y para el restaurante, no coinciden con los suyos. A raíz de esto empiezan a suceder cosas que afectan de inmediato a muchas de las familias de alrededor. La serie está principalmente en catalán, pero merece mucho la pena: se sumerge en el corazón de la ciudad más visitada de España y aborda, de manera indirecta, muchos de los problemas que sufre la gente actualmente.

One of the most interesting things I've watched in Spain this summer is this six-episode miniseries set right in the center of Barcelona, in the iconic neighborhood of El Raval. It plays out as a thriller, with a frantic pace and a plot built around one of the biggest problems facing Spain today —and so many other places in the world: gentrification. The protagonists are a family who run a long-standing restaurant in the heart of the city. But an investment fund has very different plans for the neighborhood —and for the restaurant— than the family does. From there, things start to unfold that immediately affect many of the families around them. The series is mostly in Catalan, but it's well worth it: it dives into the heart of Spain's most-visited city and touches, indirectly, on many of the problems people are facing today.

Si me tuviera que quedar con una lectura de este verano (y probablemente de lo que va de año, aunque quizá me esté viniendo muy arriba), esa es Poeta chileno, de Alejandro Zambra. Terminé la novela hace cosa de diez días y puedo afirmar que la he disfrutado de principio a fin. Con grandes dosis de humor, se adentra en el mundo de la poesía chilena a la vez que entrelaza varias historias de personajes que cargan, cada uno, con sus propios dilemas. Lo cierto es que uno acaba cogiéndoles cariño a algunos y disfruta viendo cómo van avanzando en sus diferentes caminos. Zambra, además, tiene un talento maravilloso para el manejo de la narración, y la cantidad de referencias culturales (muy chilenas, eso sí) convierte esta novela en una auténtica joya para quienes buscan adentrarse en la cultura que hay detrás del español.

If I had to pick one read from this summer (and probably from the whole year so far, though maybe I’m getting carried away), it would be Poeta chileno, by Alejandro Zambra. I finished the novel about ten days ago, and I can say I enjoyed it from beginning to end. With great doses of humor, it dives into the world of Chilean poetry while weaving together several stories of characters who each carry their own dilemmas. The truth is you end up growing fond of some of them and enjoy watching them move along their different paths. Zambra also has a wonderful gift for handling narrative, and the number of cultural references (very Chilean ones, mind you) makes this novel a real gem for anyone looking to get closer to the culture behind the Spanish language.

Milo J es posiblemente el Lamine Yamal de la música hispana actual (que me peroden por esta referencia los no futboleros). A pesar de tener solo 19 años, este cantante de origen argentino se ha convertido en todo un referente para la música en nuestro idioma y diría que ha conseguido calar en todos los países de habla hispana. Aunque comenzó su carrera más ligada al género urbano, su música siempre ha estado unida al folklore argentino y latinoamericano. Para mí, lo que más destaca de su música es precisamente eso: que un chico joven sea capaz de mirar atrás y no olvidar de dónde viene ni lo que le enseñaron sus mayores. Sin duda, en el panorama actual hacen mucha falta voces como la de Milo J, que llegan a tanta gente de tantos sitios diferentes. En un mundo donde toda la industria musical a veces tiende a fundirse en una, Milo J rescata sonidos tradicionales que forman parte de la Argentina más profunda y los mezcla con sonidos más actuales. Evoluciona, pero sin olvidar de dónde viene.

Os recomiendo escuchar toda su obra, con especial hincapié en su último disco, La vida era más corta. Aquí os dejo su Tiny Desk, que es una absoluta maravilla. Canta algunas de sus canciones más famosas y hace gala de lo que hablábamos antes: la diversidad cultural musical del Río de la Plata. Le acompaña Agarrate Catalina, una murga uruguaya muy famosa, posiblemente la más premiada del carnaval uruguayo (hermanado con el de Cádiz, en España) de las últimas dos décadas.

Milo J is quite possibly the Lamine Yamal of today’s Spanish-language music (and forgive me for this reference those of you who despise football). Despite being only 19, this Argentine singer has become a real point of reference for music in our language, and I’d say he’s managed to resonate across every Spanish-speaking country. Although he started his career more tied to urban genres, his music has always been bound to Argentine and Latin American folk. For me, what stands out most about his music is exactly that: that someone so young is able to look back and not forget where he comes from or what his elders taught him. In today’s landscape, we badly need voices like Milo J’s, ones that reach so many people in so many different places. In a world where the whole music industry sometimes tends to blur into one, Milo J recovers traditional sounds that belong to the deepest Argentina and blends them with more contemporary ones. He evolves, but without forgetting where he comes from.

I’d recommend listening to his whole body of work, with special emphasis on his latest album, La vida era más corta. Here I’m leaving you his Tiny Desk, which is an absolute marvel. He sings some of his best-known songs and showcases what we were talking about earlier: the musical and cultural richness of the Río de la Plata. He’s joined by Agarrate Catalina, a very famous Uruguayan murga, quite possibly the most awarded in carnival over the past two decades.

Living Spanish is the practical part of the newsletter. Every so often I take a piece of Spanish as it’s actually spoken and put it where you’d really use it.

Each edition comes in two parts: the piece, where the phrases arrive in context, and an interactive exercise where you try them yourself and see which ones a native would really reach for.

What is a Feria?

For a week or two each August, the towns of the south turn loud. Málaga fills up in mid-August, Almería at the end of the month, and almost every pueblo runs its own version somewhere in between. They all work more or less the same way. Anywhere in Andalucía this month, you won’t have to go looking for the feria. It finds you.

Other cities hold theirs in other seasons. The most famous, Sevilla’s, comes in April.

The night the lights go on

It starts with a switch. On the first night the whole town drifts in the same direction at the same hour, toward a giant illuminated gate, la portada, that some committee has spent months designing and will take down to nothing in ten days. Everyone waits while someone counts, and then thousands of bulbs come on at once and the fairground appears out of the dark like a second town that wasn’t there yesterday.

That switch-on has a name: el alumbrado (or el encendido), the lighting. It’s the official start, and from that moment the town keeps different hours. For the length of the feria it goes to bed at dawn and calls that normal.

The fairground itself is el real, el real de la feria: the patch of ground, empty eleven months a year, where the whole thing gets built.

Casetas, and the small heartbreak of the private one

The caseta is the basic unit of the feria: a marquee, strung with farolillos (paper lanterns), where a family, a bar, a union or even a political party sets up music, a counter and rows of tables. A feria is hundreds of casetas side by side, each with its own song leaking into the next.

One thing decides an outsider’s whole night. In Sevilla, most casetas are privadas, members and guests only, and there’s a particular flavour of sadness in standing outside one, hearing the party, not getting in. The south’s August ferias run mostly on casetas públicas, open to anyone. The question that sorts your evening is “¿tenéis caseta?”, do you have a caseta? Meaning: is there somewhere we belong tonight, or are we wandering.

And the word for the thing you’re chasing in there: el ambiente. It doesn’t translate. The closest is atmosphere, though warmer and more collective, the feeling that a place is alive with people. “Hay muy buen ambiente” is about the highest praise a feria night can earn, and when the place is heaving you’ll hear it stretched to “¡qué ambientazo!”.

What you’ll drink, what you’ll eat

The feria drink is el rebujito: manzanilla or fino (the south's dry sherry) cut with lemon soda and served cold by the jug. Purists wince at it; everyone drinks it. It's what lets you drink sherry all night in 35-degree heat without folding by eleven.

To order a little something to eat, "una tapita". The diminutive means just a bit, don't make a thing of it, even when you order six. Fried fish, pescaíto frito, is the classic; in Málaga you'll also meet the espeto, sardines skewered on a cane and grilled over embers on the sand. And the line that opens every plan: "¿nos tomamos algo?", shall we get something? The most-used sentence of the Spanish summer, and never about the drink.

Dancing, and dressing for it

At some point the music turns to sevillanas, the dance of the feria: four short movements couples learn as children and half-remember as adults. You don’t need to know them. A “¿Bailas?” (will you dance?) and a willingness to be bad in public will do.

And the dress. The traje de flamenca (many say traje de gitana) is the only regional costume in Spain with a fashion of its own: the ruffles, the colours and the cut change every year, and women follow the season’s trends the way they would with any other clothes. They own it, alter it, wear it; nobody rents it to look Spanish for an evening. To turn up dressed for the occasion, at a feria or anywhere else, is to go de punta en blanco, done up to the nines.

The other feria

Every feria hides a second one. There's the grown-up feria in the casetas, and the one the children came for: los cacharritos, the fairground rides, from a word that sounds like what they are, rattly little contraptions. Nobody bothers with the tidy term, las atracciones. In some cities the split is official: Málaga runs a feria de día in the old centre, sunlit and family-shaped, and a feria de noche out at the real, a different animal altogether.

Feria time, and the bill for it

The feria runs on a cruel clock. To stay out till dawn is trasnochar, and the walk home in daylight is its own small ritual. Tomorrow comes anyway: el madrugón (the brutal early start) and la resaca (the hangover) turn up together. Every night ends on the same beautiful lie, said across the south by people who will still be there at four: "una y nos vamos", one more and we're off.

The words that outlast the week

From football you inherit a whole drawer of ready-made idioms. From the feria you get something else: the vocabulary of celebration, which you’ll keep hearing all year, no fairground in sight.

• tirar la casa por la ventana (to throw the house out the window): spare no expense. You’ll hear it for a wedding, a birthday, anything worth overdoing.

• pasarlo bomba (to have a bomb of a time): an absolute blast. Swap in en grande or de miedo for the same joy.

• la juerga: the loud, late, happy night out that a feria is a week of. Irse de juerga means going to look for one on purpose.

• hasta el año que viene (until next year): what people say, half-joking, when the portada goes dark on the last night and the second town dissolves back into empty ground.

Estamos a finales de julio y, como se dice aquí en España, el cuerpo —y la mente— lo saben. Así que este mes mis elecciones van hacia lo ligero: cosas para ver una tarde en la que te derrites en el sofá y el calor no te deja concentrarte, o para leer a la orilla de la playa o una piscina, si tienes la suerte de tener una cerca.

It's late July and, as we say here in Spain, the body — and the mind — knows it. So this month my picks lean toward the light: things to watch on an afternoon when you're melting on the sofa and the heat won't let you focus, or to read by the sea or a pool, if you're lucky enough to have one nearby.

La película de este mes es Rondallas, de Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, una película con una trama sencilla a priori: «Dos años después del naufragio de un pesquero donde murieron siete tripulantes, los habitantes de un pequeño pueblo pesquero de la costa de Galicia intentan resucitar su banda y seguir con las tradiciones, pero para ello necesitan recuperar la ilusión.»

Esa "banda" que quieren resucitar es una rondalla, y con ella la película te lleva al corazón de la Galicia profunda. Confieso que no tenía ni idea de qué era una rondalla antes de verla —y como yo, probablemente, muchos otros españoles—. Parece que su origen es medieval y que designaba sobre todo a un grupo de instrumentos de cuerda, aunque hoy el término se ha abierto mucho. Se puede ahondar bastante en el asunto, pero prefiero definirla por lo que vi en la película: un grupo de personas, normalmente del mismo pueblo, que tocan canciones folclóricas o versiones, con su desfile de banderas incluido. Algo similar a esto:

Una película pequeña sobre un pueblo pequeño que intenta recuperar la ilusión tocando música. A veces no hace falta más. Yo terminé la película sabiendo algo de mi propio país que ignoraba por completo. No sé si eso es aprender español o simplemente España, pero en esta newsletter viene a ser lo mismo.

This month’s film is Rondallas, by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo — a film with a seemingly simple plot: “Two years after the shipwreck of a fishing boat in which seven crew members died, the people of a small fishing village on the coast of Galicia try to revive their band and keep their traditions alive, but to do so they need to rekindle their spirit.”

That “band” they want to revive is a rondalla, and through it the film takes you into the heart of la Galicia profunda — deep, rural Galicia. I’ll admit I had no idea what a rondalla was before watching it — and like me, probably, plenty of other Spaniards didn’t either. Its origins seem to be medieval, and the word once referred mainly to a group of string instruments, though today the term has broadened a great deal. You could dig deep into all this, but I’d rather define it by what I saw in the film: a group of people, usually from the same village, playing folk songs or covers, flag parade included. Something like the video embedded in the Spanish version.

A small film about a small village trying to rekindle its spirit through music. Sometimes that’s all it takes. I finished the film knowing something about my own country that I’d been completely unaware of. I’m not sure whether that counts as learning Spanish or simply learning Spain, but in this newsletter it comes to much the same thing.

Si eres como yo de los que en la playa, la piscina o en esos días libres de verano en que quieres darle un respiro a la mente sueles devorar alguna novela negra, entonces La novia gitana es para ti.

Empieza con una desaparición: Susana, gitana criada como paya, se esfuma tras su despedida de soltera y aparece muerta días después. Lo perturbador es que su hermana corrió la misma suerte siete años antes, también en vísperas de su boda, solo que el culpable de aquello sigue en la cárcel. De ese imposible tira la inspectora Elena Blanco, una de las protagonistas más raras y magnéticas del noir español reciente: solitaria, aficionada a la grappa y al karaoke, tan rota como brillante. Más allá del thriller, la novela se adentra en un mundo poco visitado por la ficción popular: el de los gitanos que renuncian a sus costumbres para integrarse y el de quienes no se lo perdonan.

Un detalle que añade morbo: Carmen Mola era, según su editorial, una profesora madrileña de casi cincuenta años que escribía novela negra a ratos, casada y con tres hijos. En 2021, cuando subieron a recoger el Premio Planeta, resultó ser el disfraz de tres guionistas: Jorge Díaz, Agustín Martínez y Antonio Mercero. La escritora anónima más vendida del país no existía.

Un apunte sobre el nivel: la prosa es ágil y engancha, pero el vocabulario es amplio y hay bastante jerga policial y coloquialismos. Se disfruta más con un español ya asentado; si estás empezando, quizá sea de esos libros que dan más placer con un par de años más de rodaje encima. Y si te atrapa, estás de suerte: es el primero de una trilogía protagonizada por Elena Blanco.

If you’re like me — the kind of person who devours a crime novel on the beach, by the pool, or on those free summer days when you want to give your mind a rest — then La novia gitana (The Gypsy Bride) is for you.

It starts with a disappearance: Susana, a Roma woman raised as a paya (non-Roma), vanishes after her bachelorette party and turns up dead days later. The unsettling part is that her sister met the same fate seven years earlier, also on the eve of her wedding — except the culprit in that case is still behind bars. Inspector Elena Blanco pulls at that impossible thread: one of the strangest, most magnetic leads in recent Spanish noir — solitary, fond of grappa and karaoke, as broken as she is brilliant. Beyond the thriller, the novel steps into a world rarely visited by popular fiction: that of the Roma who give up their customs to fit in, and of those who never forgive them for it.

A detail that adds to the intrigue: according to her publisher, Carmen Mola was a Madrid schoolteacher in her late forties who wrote crime novels in her spare time, married with three children. In 2021, when they walked up to collect the Premio Planeta, “she” turned out to be the disguise of three screenwriters: Jorge Díaz, Agustín Martínez and Antonio Mercero. The country’s best-selling anonymous author didn’t exist.

A note on level: the prose is nimble and pulls you along, but the vocabulary is wide-ranging, with a fair amount of police slang and colloquialisms. It’s best enjoyed with Spanish that’s already settled; if you’re starting out, it may be one of those books that gives more pleasure with a couple more years under your belt. And if it grabs you, you’re in luck: it’s the first of a trilogy featuring Elena Blanco.

Para escuchar, un grupo entero más que una canción: Bomba Estéreo, colombianos de Bogotá que llevan casi veinte años haciendo lo que ellos llaman “cumbia psicodélica”. Algo así como cumbia y sonidos del Caribe metidas en la batidora de la electrónica.

Los recomiendo precisamente por lo que a un purista le chirriaría: cantan en español, en inglés, en spanglish; colaboran con Bad Bunny y hasta cerraron un Grammy Latino junto a Will Smith. No es un defecto, es el retrato de algo: el español de América hoy no vive encerrado, se mezcla, viaja y vuelve cambiado. Escucharlos es oír una lengua viva, no un idioma de manual.

Para entrar, su Tiny Desk de NPR: tocan “Soy Yo” y “Somos Dos” casi desnudas, sin el estruendo de los directos, y ahí se oye de verdad la voz de Li Saumet y lo que dice. Desde ahí ya caes por el resto tú solo.

For listening, a whole band rather than a single song: Bomba Estéreo, Colombians from Bogotá who’ve spent nearly twenty years making what they call “psychedelic cumbia” — something like cumbia and Caribbean sounds thrown into a blender with electronica.

I recommend them precisely for what would make a purist wince: they sing in Spanish, in English, in Spanglish; they’ve collaborated with Bad Bunny and even closed a Latin Grammy alongside Will Smith. It’s not a flaw — it’s a portrait of something: the Spanish of the Americas today doesn’t live shut away; it mixes, travels, and comes back changed. Listening to them is hearing a living language, not a textbook one.

To get in, their NPR Tiny Desk: they play “Soy Yo” and “Somos Dos” almost bare, without the roar of their live shows, and there you really hear Li Saumet’s voice and what she’s saying. From there you’ll fall for the rest on your own.

Son las doce de un domingo. Un rincón cualquiera de España. De la cocina llega ese olor característico. Patatas friéndose en aceite caliente. Algo en el cerebro se activa antes de que puedas pensarlo. No hace falta mirar. Sabes exactamente lo que hay en esa sartén, y sabes que hoy, como tantos otros domingos, va a ser un buen día.

Tres ingredientes. Cuatro si eres de los que añaden cebolla. Y sin embargo, algo en esa sartén ha calado tan hondo1 que nadie se detiene a preguntarse cómo llegó hasta aquí. La tortilla de patatas es sagrada, y como todo lo sagrado, casi nadie cuestiona su origen.

La patata no es originaria de España. Llega en el siglo XVI desde América y al principio genera rechazo: durante casi dos siglos queda relegada2 a comida de animales y de los más pobres. Es más una solución de emergencia que un alimento con identidad propia.

No es hasta finales del siglo XVIII cuando aparece algo parecido a lo que hoy conocemos como tortilla de patatas. En Villanueva de la Serena, Extremadura, un documento habla de una mezcla de huevos y patatas. Sin nombre, sin receta. Solo alguien aprovechando lo poco que tiene.

La leyenda más extendida llega algo después, durante las Guerras Carlistas3, en Navarra. El general Zumalacárregui necesita alimentar a sus tropas con algo barato y rápido. Una campesina improvisa con lo que hay: huevos y patatas. Ahí, según la historia popular, nace la tortilla. El problema es que nadie puede verificarlo, ya que ni siquiera aparece en los libros que narran la vida del propio general.

Lo que sí está documentado es lo que vino después. En 1867, la tortilla de patatas formó parte del menú del restaurante español en la Exposición Universal de París. El rey Alfonso XII se la sirvió al príncipe de Gales. El mismo plato que nació de no tener nada había llegado a las mesas más altas del país en menos de un siglo.

El origen exacto no está claro y probablemente nunca lo estará. Pero hay algo en lo que todas las versiones coinciden: la tortilla de patatas no nació en una cocina con recursos. Nació de la escasez de la España profunda. Del ingenio de campesinos que utilizaban los pocos recursos que tenían para conseguir llevar algo digno a la mesa.

De la escasez a las mesas de todos los hogares. Esta es la sencilla — y compleja — historia de la tortilla de patatas, un símbolo cultural y gastronómico que «cohesiona4 más a España que muchos artículos de la Constitución», en palabras de Javier López Linage, el investigador que habla de su posible origen en ese pequeño pueblo de Extremadura.

Un elemento cohesionador hasta que en una mesa alguien saca una tortilla de patatas sin cebolla y alguien dice: «¿Sin cebolla? ¿Esto qué es?» Y es que a pesar de que casi todo español ama una buena tortilla de patatas, su proceso de elaboración es objeto de disputa constante. Y creo que eso la hace ser lo que es en la sociedad española, porque la discusión sobre cosas sin sentido está impresa en el ADN del español tanto como lo está la tortilla de patatas. Una tortilla que sabe a casa, a olor a fritanga5 de la cocina, y que nunca sabe igual si no estás en el lugar que la vio nacer.

It’s twelve o’clock on a Sunday. Somewhere in Spain. From the kitchen comes that unmistakable smell. Potatoes frying in hot oil. Something in the brain activates before you can even think about it. There’s no need to look. You know exactly what’s in that pan, and you know that today, like so many other Sundays, is going to be a good day.

Three ingredients. Four if you’re the kind of person who adds onion. And yet, something about that pan has embedded itself so deeply that nobody stops to wonder how it got here. The tortilla de patatas is sacred, and like all things sacred, almost no one questions its origin.

The potato is not native to Spain. It arrived in the sixteenth century from the Americas and was met with resistance: for nearly two centuries it was relegated to food for animals and the very poor. It was more an emergency solution than an ingredient with an identity of its own.

It wasn’t until the late eighteenth century that something resembling what we now know as tortilla de patatas appeared for the first time in writing. In Villanueva de la Serena, Extremadura, a document refers to a mixture of eggs and potatoes. No name, no recipe. Just someone making the most of what little they had.

The most widespread legend comes slightly later, during the Carlist Wars, in Navarre. General Zumalacárregui needed to feed his troops with something cheap and quick. A local peasant woman improvised with what she had: eggs and potatoes. That, according to popular history, is where the tortilla was born. The problem is that nobody can verify it — it doesn’t even appear in the books that chronicle the general’s own life.

What is documented is what came next. In 1867, the tortilla de patatas featured on the menu of the Spanish restaurant at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. King Alfonso XII served it to the Prince of Wales. The same dish that was born from having nothing had reached the highest tables in the country in less than a century.

The exact origin is unclear and probably always will be. But there is one thing all versions agree on: the tortilla de patatas was not born in a well-stocked kitchen. It was born from scarcity — from the depths of a poorer Spain. From the resourcefulness of peasants who made the most of what little they had to put something worthy on the table.

From scarcity to every household table. This is the simple — and complex — history of the tortilla de patatas, a cultural and gastronomic symbol that, in the words of Javier López Linage, the researcher who traced its possible origins to that small town in Extremadura, “brings Spain together more than many articles of the Constitution.”

A unifying force — until someone at the table produces a tortilla without onion and someone else says: “No onion? What is this supposed to be?” Because despite the fact that almost every Spaniard loves a good tortilla de patatas, how it’s made is a source of constant dispute. And I think that’s part of what makes it what it is in Spanish society — because arguing about things that don’t matter is as Spanish as the tortilla de patatas itself. A tortilla that tastes like home, like the smell of frying oil drifting from the kitchen, and that never quite tastes the same if you’re not in the place that gave it life.

And on timing, I’ll be straight with you: this first one is about the World Cup, and it comes a little late. But Spain play on Friday, and every round they survive buys us another match. Late, then, but not too late to be useful.

A goal you hear before you see it

Last night, Mikel Merino’s last-minute goal was heard in the streets of Spain before it was seen on any screen: first the roar pouring out of every open window at once, and a few seconds later — courtesy of the streaming delay — the picture.

On Friday, against Belgium, it will happen again. This guide is so that this time you understand everything being shouted so you can shout some of it back.

The plan: Spain plays the quarter-final this Friday the 10th. If they get through, the semi-final falls on the 14th or 15th; the final, Sunday the 19th. In the best case, we have, at most, three matches and two weeks of the most alive Spanish of the year ahead of us. If not, we will be supporting any other team. Let’s go scene by scene.

Before the match: the faith and la porra

The first thing you’ll hear in the days beforehand: la porra — the informal betting pool, at the office or in some WhatsApp groups, where everyone throws in a score prediction and a couple of euros if things get spicy. The unwritten law of every porra: it’s always won by the person who has never watched a match in their life.

The hours before kick-off carry two opposing liturgies, and it pays to recognize both. The optimist’s: “tengo buenas sensaciones” — I’ve got a good feeling about this. The quiet confidence of someone who has decided, against all evidence, that today is the day. Its darker twin is the one you’ll actually hear most: “me da mala espina” — literally it gives me a bad thorn — the pang of dread when something feels off. Spanish trusts the bad feeling more than the good one; the thorn only really grows in the negative. And the protective pessimist’s: “yo es que no quiero ilusionarme” — I just don’t want to get my hopes up — which is the Spanish way of getting your hopes up enormously while pretending otherwise. Ilusionarse is one of those words that won’t cross into English cleanly: it isn’t illusion; it’s anticipated joy, the hope you let yourself feel. Drop either line into a group of Spaniards on Friday afternoon and it works like a password.

And the question that synchronizes the whole country, ready to use as is: “¿a qué hora es el partido?” — what time’s the match? With this World Cup in America, the answer tends to be “late”: nine, ten, midnight. Hence the phrase of these weeks: “me quedo a verlo” — I’m staying up for it — even when tomorrow starts early.

During the match: the “uy” and the -azo

Your first task on Friday is to listen for the “¡uy!”. It’s the collective sound of almost — the shot that grazes the post, the header that misses by nothing. Those two pieces of woodwork have names worth knowing, because you’ll hear them cursed all night: el palo (the post) and el larguero (the crossbar). When the ball strikes them, half the country ages a year.

And that sound never comes from one throat. An entire bar going “uy” at the same time is Spain in its purest form — that’s la afición, the collective of fans, made of hinchas (the serious word) and forofos (the fond, slightly over-the-top one). When the crowd leans in and roars a team forward, they say that la afición aprieta — it squeezes. Join in without fear: the “uy” isn’t language, it’s membership.

When the goal finally comes, watch what the language does: gol isn’t enough — it’s a golazo. The suffix -azo blows anything up to size: a partidazo is a tremendous match, a jugadorazo is a very good football player; and from parada we can hear paradón — here the augmentative flips to -ón — an impossible save. This is the grammar of emotion: Spanish stretches its words when the world outgrows them.

Two more, for beauty, in case the match is feeling generous: a vaselina is the soft touch that floats the ball over the keeper — yes, like the ointment: a goal spread, not struck. A caño is slipping it between an opponent’s legs, the most celebrated humiliation in the sport. If you’ve watched Lamine Yamal play, you know exactly the one I mean.

Then the VAR arrives, and with it an entire genre of indignation to debut. The canonical line: “¡eso es penalti de toda la vida!” — that’s a penalty, always has been. De toda la vida: the way it’s been done since the world began; works for penalties, recipes and bars alike. And the sofa conspiracy theory: “el árbitro nos tiene manía” — the ref has it in for us. Tenerle manía a alguien will serve you far beyond football: your boss, your teacher, the algorithm.

Then the final minutes, and your two survival phrases: “no puedo mirar” (I can’t watch) and “me va a dar algo” — roughly I’m going to have a fit, sofa edition. This is where the match decides how it wants to torture you.

There are three ways it can. If ninety minutes aren’t enough, you go into la prórroga (extra time), thirty minutes nobody wants and everybody remembers. And if that settles nothing, los penaltis — the shootout, known in Spain with statistical resignation as la lotería, the lottery. But the cruelty most nights lives closer than that: el descuento, stoppage time, the few added minutes where Merino’s goal was born last night and where Spain has staged half its history. Against Portugal, the whole country said those two survival phrases for ninety minutes. In the ninetieth, Merino.

After the match: a country of managers

The whistle blows and the third half begins, played at the bar and in the group chat: la tertulia — the word comes from the 19th-century café gatherings and names something deeply Spanish: talking for the sheer pleasure of talking, firm opinions on flimsy evidence. During a World Cup, Spain becomes a country of 48 million seleccionadores (national-team managers), and here’s your minimum kit: “yo hubiera sacado a...” (I’d have brought on...), “lo vi venir” (I saw it coming — always after the fact) and “es que así no se puede jugar” (you just can’t play like this). Three phrases and you can hold twenty minutes at any bar counter knowing nothing about football. Nobody will notice.

At some point someone will note, with a knowing look, that hay cantera — there’s a quarry: la cantera is the young talent pushing up from below, as though footballers were mined out of local rock. And if the night was suffered and survived, someone will crown a remontada — a comeback so characteristically Spanish that French borrowed the word untranslated after a certain Barcelona night in 2017.

The next morning, the password at any workplace: “¿viste el partido?” — did you see the match? It isn’t a question; it’s a greeting. Answer it even if you didn’t. And when the win came the hard way, the formula of relief: “de la que nos hemos librado” — what a close call, literally “the one we got out of”.

If Spain go out, you’ll hear the phrase that cures everything and nothing: “el fútbol es así” — that’s football for you. And if Spain win — well, that’s a piece I’ll have to write on the 20th.

Off the pitch

Here’s the strange gift of it all: the best football language doesn’t stay on the football. Long after the summer, in conversations with no ball in sight, you’ll catch these:

Echar balones fuera — to kick the ball out of play: to dodge a question, deflect. What a politician does at a press conference, and what your coworker does when you ask whose mistake it was.

Colgar las botas — to hang up your boots: to retire, from anything at all. A footballer, a bullfighter, your aunt leaving the school she taught at for thirty years — they all hang up their boots.

Pillar a alguien en fuera de juego — to catch someone offside: to catch them off guard, out of position. La pregunta me pilló en fuera de juego.

Casarse de penalti — to marry by penalty kick: to marry with a baby already on the way. The expression is a good deal older than the VAR and still surfaces at any Sunday lunch.

Football ends; the language it makes, stays.

Un poeta es la mejor película que he visto este año.

Sigue a Óscar Restrepo, un adulto desempleado y poeta frustrado cuya vida cambia cuando empieza a dar clase en un instituto y conoce a Yurlady, una adolescente de origen humilde con un talento innato para la poesía. Intentando ayudarla, empieza a entenderse a sí mismo.

Es una oda a la lengua española. En Colombia existe una cultura de la oratoria que eleva el idioma a una dimensión distinta y Óscar Restrepo lo encarna a la perfección. En sus innumerables discusiones, muchas sin destino aparente, jamás deja de rendir homenaje a la lengua y hasta en los momentos más oscuros, no deja de encontrar las palabras adecuadas.

Navega entre el drama, la esperanza y un sarcasmo muy sutil que han hecho que Óscar Restrepo consiga entrar en mi memoria como lo que es, un gran poeta.

El nivel es avanzado: el ritmo es rápido, el vocabulario complejo, y la poesía exige un dominio sólido del idioma. Eso no quita que cualquier persona interesada en el español deba acercarse a esta película, aunque sea con subtítulos en inglés.

Un poeta is the best film I’ve seen this year. It follows Óscar Restrepo, an unemployed adult and frustrated poet whose life changes when he starts teaching at a secondary school and meets Yurlady, a teenager from a humble background with an innate talent for poetry. In trying to help her, he begins to understand himself.

It’s an ode to the Spanish language. In Colombia there is a culture of oratory that elevates the language to a different dimension, and Óscar Restrepo embodies it perfectly. In his countless discussions — many of them going nowhere — he never stops paying tribute to the language, and even in his darkest moments, he never fails to find the right words.

It navigates between drama, hope, and a very subtle sarcasm that have made Óscar Restrepo find his way into my memory for what he is: a great poet.

The level is advanced: the pace is fast, the vocabulary complex, and poetry demands a solid command of the language. That shouldn’t stop anyone interested in Spanish from watching this film, even with English subtitles.

Estos meses estoy intentando reencontrarme con la literatura española, leyendo clásicos que tenía en el tintero. El Camino ha sido uno de esos libros que llegan en el momento justo.

Cuenta la historia de Daniel, el Mochuelo, un chaval de 11 años que vive en un pueblo castellano de posguerra. La noche antes de que deba irse a la ciudad a estudiar, Daniel repasa todo lo que va a dejar atrás. Para sus padres, quedarse en el pueblo es quedarse atrás. Para él, progresar tiene un precio que nadie ha querido calcular.

Delibes escribe en un castellano pegado a la tierra y muy costumbrista. El idioma de los animales, del campo, de los pueblos de Castilla. Es un vocabulario que no vas a encontrar en ningún manual, pero que forma parte de lo que hace al español distinto de cualquier otra lengua.

Escrita en 1950, Delibes supo plasmar en Daniel el Mochuelo un dilema atemporal. Con los tiempos que corren, el chaval de pueblo tenía más razón de la que parecía. Y yo, que como él tuve que irme del lugar que me vio nacer para progresar, me sigo haciendo la misma pregunta años después.

These past months I’ve been trying to reconnect with Spanish literature, reading classics I’d been meaning to get to. El Camino has been one of those books that arrive at exactly the right time.

It follows Daniel, el Mochuelo, an 11-year-old boy living in a Castilian village in post-war Spain. The night before he must leave for the city to study, Daniel goes over everything he’s about to leave behind. For his parents, staying in the village means falling behind. For him, progress comes at a price nobody has wanted to calculate.

Delibes writes in a Castilian Spanish rooted in the land — the language of animals, fields, and the villages of Castile. It’s a vocabulary you won’t find in any textbook, but one that is part of what makes Spanish unlike any other language.

Written in 1950, Delibes managed to capture in Daniel el Mochuelo a timeless dilemma. Given the times we’re living in, the village kid was more right than he seemed. And I, who like him had to leave the place I was born to move forward, am still asking myself the same question years later.

La recomendación musical va a ser breve y concisa. Hay artistas que descubres y sientes que llevaban tiempo esperándote. Es el caso de Silvana Estrada, cantautora mexicana que descubrí hace ya unos años y a la que vuelvo constantemente. Silvana tiene una voz angelical, única, con unos giros que hace que el tiempo se detenga cuando canta. No es música de fondo. Es música que exige que te sientes y cierres los ojos.

El mejor lugar para empezar es su Tiny Desk Concert, pero cualquier canción suya te lleva a algún otro lugar.

Silvana has an angelic, one-of-a-kind voice, with turns that make time stop when she sings. This isn’t background music. It’s music that asks you to sit down and close your eyes.

Imagina estar caminando entre los barrancos de La Gomera, una pequeña isla de las ocho que conforman Canarias, cuando empiezas a escuchar unos silbidos fuertes que cortan el viento. Sonidos que no reconoces como música ni como ruido aleatorio. Sigues tu camino un poco mosca1, pensando que igual son una especie de pájaro que habita esa isla y que se comunica de esa manera tan estridente.2

Al rato te das cuenta de que no son pájaros. Son dos personas a varios kilómetros de distancia que parecen estar comunicándose entre ellas con un propósito claro.

Y todo encaja.

Lo que acabas de escuchar no es un lenguaje inventado. Es un lenguaje desarrollado durante siglos que se conoce como Silbo gomero. Y es español, el mismo español que utilizo para escribir estas palabras, pero convertido en silbido.

El Silbo gomero reemplaza las vocales y consonantes del español por silbidos diferenciados. Dos silbidos sustituyen a las cinco vocales y otros cuatro a las consonantes; lo que varía es el tono, la interrupción o la continuidad de estos. Con práctica, los habitantes de La Gomera pueden transmitir cualquier tipo de mensaje en español a través del silbido hasta a 5 kilómetros de distancia.

Fueron los guanches (aborígenes canarios) quienes crearon este sistema de comunicación. Se sabe poco sobre la lengua que hablaban, y se cree que su sistema fonético era sencillo, lo que dio lugar al Silbo. Con la llegada de los españoles, el Silbo se adaptó, pasando a ser español silbado. Hay evidencia de que se utilizaba también en otras islas Canarias, pero La Gomera es el único lugar donde ha conseguido sobrevivir.

Para entender el uso del silbo, hay que entender la orografía3 de la isla. Su desarrollo se produjo principalmente en el mundo rural, ya que la posibilidad de comunicarse entre barrancos4 y valles a grandes distancias lo hacía muy efectivo. Es por eso que en el siglo XX, con la emigración a las ciudades y la aparición del teléfono y otros medios de comunicación, el Silbo gomero se vio en peligro de desaparecer.

Frente al riesgo de desaparición, la propia comunidad gomera se esforzó en transmitir el Silbo a las generaciones más jóvenes. Para ello se abrieron centros y asociaciones que dieran acceso a este lenguaje único. A todo esto se sumó la iniciativa del Gobierno de Canarias, que estableció el Silbo como asignatura obligatoria en las escuelas desde 1999 y creó una Escuela de Silbo Gomero, dando la posibilidad de profundizar más allá de los estudios obligatorios a todo aquel que esté interesado.

Dominar el silbo a la perfección está al alcance de pocos; aunque la mayoría de habitantes de la isla pueden entenderlo, solo los nacidos antes de 1950 y quienes empezaron a estudiarlo a partir de 1999 son capaces de ponerlo en práctica.

Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO desde 2009, el silbo gomero es una historia de supervivencia de un pueblo que nunca quiso olvidar de dónde vino.

Imagine walking through the ravines of La Gomera, a small island among the eight that make up the Canary Islands, when you start hearing loud whistles cutting through the wind. Sounds you don’t recognise as music or random noise. You keep walking, a little unsettled, thinking they might be some kind of bird native to the island, communicating in that sharp, piercing way.

Then you realise they’re not birds. They’re two people, several kilometres away, who seem to be communicating with each other — with clear purpose.

And everything clicks.

What you just heard is not an invented language. It is a language developed over centuries, known as the silbo gomero. And it is Spanish — the same Spanish I use to write these words — but turned into a whistle.

The silbo gomero replaces the vowels and consonants of Spanish with differentiated whistles. Two whistles substitute the five Spanish vowels; four others replace the consonants. What varies is the tone, interruption, or continuity of each sound. With practice, the inhabitants of La Gomera can convey any message in Spanish through whistling across distances of up to 5 kilometres.

It was the Guanches — the indigenous people of the Canary Islands — who created this system of communication. Little is known about the language they spoke, but their phonetic system is believed to have been simple enough to give rise to the silbo. With the arrival of the Spanish, the silbo adapted, becoming whistled Spanish. There is evidence that it was used on other Canary Islands too, but La Gomera is the only place where it has managed to survive.

To understand the silbo, you need to understand the geography of the island. It developed primarily in rural life, where the ability to communicate across ravines and valleys over great distances made it extraordinarily useful. That is why, in the twentieth century, as people moved to cities and the telephone and other means of communication arrived, the silbo gomero found itself in danger of disappearing.

Mastering the silbo fully is within reach of only a few; although most inhabitants of the island can understand it, only those born before 1950 and those who began studying it from 1999 onwards are able to put it into practice.

Faced with the risk of disappearance, the Gomero community made every effort to pass the silbo on to younger generations. Centres and associations were opened to give access to this unique language. The Government of the Canary Islands went further, making the silbo a compulsory subject in schools from 1999 and creating a School of Silbo Gomero, offering anyone interested the chance to go deeper than the compulsory curriculum.

Recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2009, the silbo gomero is a story of survival — of a people who never wanted to forget where they came from.

Cada verano, en algún punto entre las ocho de la tarde y las diez de la noche, las puertas de muchas casas del sur de España se abren y la gente saca las sillas a la calle.

Esta actividad tiene un nombre: tomar el fresco o la fresquita. La mecánica es muy sencilla: buscas una silla fácil de transportar, la bajas a la calle, te plantas en el sitio de siempre y esperas a que lleguen los demás.

Para llegar a este momento, primero hay que pasar por el calor sofocante1 que recorre el sur de España durante los meses de verano. Las consecuencias se notan en las rutinas. Las tardes se hacen interminables, las persianas están bajadas, apenas se ve un alma en las calles antes de las seis de la tarde y hay un silencio sepulcral que solo se interrumpe con el sonido del ventilador tratando de dar un poco de alivio en el salón de la casa.

Después, alguien se asoma a la ventana, decide que el calor es más o menos soportable, coge su silla y se baja a la calle, abriendo la veda2 a que el resto del grupo vaya llegando.

Aunque he escuchado tomar el fresco en diferentes sitios, la palabra que me pertenece es fresquita. Hay algo en ese diminutivo que aporta un matiz íntimo, familiar. Tomar la fresquita significa volver al lugar de siempre, sin planes preestablecidos, con la gente de siempre, que sabes que llegarán en algún momento.

Lo que ocurre tomando la fresquita es todo y nada a la vez. Se habla del programa de la tarde, del último cotilleo3, se juega a las cartas o simplemente se está presente en el momento, acompañándose en un silencio que no incomoda a nadie. Nuestros mayores practicaban mindfulness mucho antes de que nadie le pusiera nombre. Sin agenda, sin justificación. El placer de no hacer nada era suficiente razón.

«¿Cuál es el plan?», es quizás la pregunta más repetida entre la gente de mi generación. Quedar sin un plan, el tiempo sin actividad, genera incomodidad y en muchos casos, culpa. Tomar la fresquita no propone nada, no tiene duración fija y no produce nada. Es simplemente estar ahí.

Hoy, las sillas se quedan dentro. El aire acondicionado ha resuelto el problema del calor de otra manera: más eficiente, más privada, más sola. Las pantallas han llenado el silencio que antes se llenaba con los vecinos y el aburrimiento es algo difícilmente tolerable entre las nuevas generaciones.

La fresquita no ha desaparecido del todo, pero se ha vuelto cosa de mayores, de pueblos pequeños, de veranos en casa de los abuelos. Y sé que puede que esté romantizando este hábito que he decidido llamar arte. Pero hay algo que sé: nada me acercaría más a ese sentimiento de pertenencia que coger una silla y bajarme a la puerta. Volver a sentir esa sensación de adolescencia de no hacer nada y hacerlo todo a la vez.

Every summer, somewhere between eight and ten in the evening, the doors of many houses in the south of Spain open and people bring their chairs out to the street.

This has a name: tomar el fresco, or la fresquita. The mechanics are simple: you grab a chair that’s easy to carry, take it downstairs, set it up in the usual spot, and wait for the others to arrive.

To get to that moment, you first have to get through the suffocating heat that covers the south of Spain during the summer months. You can feel it in the daily routines. Afternoons stretch on endlessly, the blinds are down, there’s barely a soul on the streets before six in the evening, and a deep silence settles over everything, broken only by the sound of a fan trying to bring some relief to the living room.

Then, someone leans out of the window, decides the heat is more or less bearable, picks up their chair and heads downstairs — and that’s the signal for everyone else to start showing up.

I’ve heard people call it tomar el fresco in different places, but the word that belongs to me is fresquita. There’s something in that diminutive that feels intimate, familiar. Tomar la fresquita means going back to the usual spot, with no plans, with the usual people — who you know will show up at some point.

What happens during la fresquita is everything and nothing at once. People talk about the afternoon TV show, the latest gossip, play cards, or simply stay present — keeping each other company in a silence that doesn’t bother anyone. Our elders were practising mindfulness long before anyone gave it a name. No agenda, no justification. The pleasure of doing nothing was reason enough.

“What’s the plan?” is perhaps the most common question among people my age. Meeting up without a plan, time without activity — it creates discomfort, and often guilt. La fresquita proposes nothing, has no fixed duration, and produces nothing. It’s simply being there.

Today, the chairs stay inside. Air conditioning has solved the heat problem in a different way — more efficient, more private, more alone. Screens have filled the silence that used to be filled by neighbours, and boredom has become something younger generations find hard to tolerate.

La fresquita hasn’t disappeared entirely, but it’s become something for older people, small villages, summers at your grandparents’ house. I know I might be romanticising a habit I’ve decided to call an art. But there’s one thing I’m sure of: nothing would bring me closer to that feeling of belonging than picking up a chair and heading downstairs. To feel again that teenage sense of doing nothing and doing everything at once.

Cuando le digo a alguien fuera de España (o a veces incluso gente nacional) que vivo en Almería, la reacción suele ser la misma: un silencio educado. A veces alguien menciona las playas, a veces el desierto de Tabernas. Pero casi nunca nadie menciona el plástico. Y el plástico es lo primero que ves cuando llegas.

Y es que Almería es una paradoja en sí misma. Es, por un lado, la provincia más árida de Europa, hogar del único desierto de Europa del que ya hablé brevemente en mi primera publicación y, por otro lado, es la despensa del continente.

When I tell someone outside Spain — or sometimes even people within the country — that I live in Almería, the reaction is usually the same: a polite silence. Sometimes someone mentions the beaches, sometimes the Tabernas desert. But almost no one ever mentions the plastic. And the plastic is the first thing you see when you arrive.

Almería is, in itself, a paradox. On one hand, it is the most arid province in Europe, home to the continent’s only desert — which I wrote about briefly in my first post — and on the other, it is the pantry of Europe.

La curiosidad cultural

Este ecosistema de invernaderos del que he hablado en la introducción recibe el nombre de mar de plástico y como curiosidad, os diré, que es junto a la Gran Barrera de Coral australiana, la única estructura terrestre que se puede ver desde el espacio (algo que confirmó el astronauta español Pedro Duque).

El impacto visual es terrible, no os lo voy a negar, y lo cierto es que cuando estás entrando en la provincia y te encuentras con semejante panorama, a veces dan ganas de darse la vuelta. Sin embargo, detrás de estas toneladas de plástico se esconden varios puntos interesantes.

El primer aspecto es el económico. Almería produce anualmente más de tres millones de toneladas de frutas y verduras (tomates, pimientos, pepinos, berenjenas…) que abastecen los supermercados de media Europa. En invierno, cuando en el norte del continente no crece nada, Almería no para. Es un milagro logístico construido sobre tierra casi desértica.

El segundo aspecto es el ambiental. El plástico que cubre la provincia, que supera las 30.000 hectáreas, genera un problema de residuos enorme. Y, sin embargo, paradójicamente, el sistema de invernadero consume menos agua que la agricultura tradicional al aire libre, y ha convertido una de las zonas más pobres de España en una de las más productivas. No es una historia de buenos y malos. Es más complicado que eso y entender todo este ecosistema requiere una investigación que va más allá de lo que cabe aquí.

Y luego está la cara más oscura, la que raramente aparece en los titulares: la mayor parte del trabajo en los invernaderos lo realizan trabajadores migrantes en condiciones que contrastan duramente con la abundancia que producen. Es un tema complejo y debatido, y merece más espacio del que tengo aquí.

Para terminar, la paradoja que más me sorprende. Los estudios meteorológicos detectaron hace años que la temperatura media en la zona de los invernaderos es ligeramente inferior a la del entorno. El plástico blanco refleja la luz solar en lugar de absorberla. El mar de plástico, en su pequeña escala, está enfriando el terreno que cubre. La naturaleza y la intervención humana produciendo resultados que nadie esperaba.

Almería es así: árida y fértil, fea y fascinante, un problema y una solución al mismo tiempo. Una paradoja que se ve desde el espacio.

This ecosystem of greenhouses, which I mentioned in the introduction, is known as the mar de plástico — the sea of plastic. As a curious fact, it is, along with the Australian Great Barrier Reef, one of the only man-made structures visible from space — something confirmed by Spanish astronaut Pedro Duque. That alone should give you a sense of the scale we’re talking about.

The visual impact is striking, I won’t deny it. When you’re driving into the province and you come across that panorama, part of you wants to turn around. And yet, behind all that plastic, there are several interesting things worth unpacking.

The first is economic. Almería produces over three million tonnes of fruit and vegetables every year — tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergines — supplying supermarkets across half of Europe. In winter, when nothing grows in the north of the continent, Almería doesn’t stop. It is a logistical miracle built on near-desert land.

The second is environmental. The plastic covering the province spans over 30,000 hectares and generates an enormous waste problem. And yet, paradoxically, greenhouse farming uses less water than traditional open-air agriculture, and has turned one of the poorest regions in Spain into one of its most productive. This is not a story of good and evil. It’s more complicated than that — and understanding this ecosystem fully goes well beyond what fits here.

Then there is the darker side, the one that rarely makes the headlines: most of the work in the greenhouses is carried out by migrant workers in conditions that stand in stark contrast to the abundance they produce. It’s a complex and contested issue, and it deserves more space than I have here.

Finally, the paradox that surprises me most. Meteorological studies detected years ago that the average temperature in the greenhouse zone is slightly lower than in the surrounding area. The white plastic reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it. The sea of plastic, on its small scale, is cooling the land it covers. Nature and human intervention producing results nobody expected.

Almería is like that: arid and fertile, ugly and fascinating, a problem and a solution at the same time. A paradox visible from space.

Lo que no está en el diccionario

Hay palabras en español que no tienen traducción exacta en inglés, y agobio es una de ellas.

Overwhelm se acerca, pero no llega. El agobio tiene una dimensión casi física. Es el peso que sientes cuando hay demasiado: demasiado ruido, demasiado trabajo, demasiada gente, demasiado plástico. Es una sensación que oprime, que carga.

En España se usa constantemente y en contextos muy distintos:

“Tengo un agobio con el trabajo esta semana.”

“Qué agobio de ciudad en agosto.”

“Me agobia no saber qué va a pasar.”

Y también como adjetivo: una situación agobiante, o como estado: estoy agobiado/a.

Lo interesante es que el agobio no es pánico ni ansiedad clínica, es algo más cotidiano. Una queja legítima ante lo que aprieta demasiado.

Vale la pena mencionar que en Latinoamérica el agobio existe, pero no tiene el mismo peso cotidiano. En México es más común escuchar agotado o estresado para expresar sensaciones similares. En Argentina se usa agobiado, pero con menos frecuencia que en España, donde el sustantivo agobio es casi omnipresente. Como tantas cosas en el español, la palabra es la misma, pero el uso dice mucho sobre la cultura de cada lugar.

Some words in Spanish have no exact equivalent in English, and agobio is one of them.

Overwhelm comes close, but doesn’t quite get there. Agobio has an almost physical dimension. It’s the weight you feel when there’s too much: too much noise, too much work, too many people, too much plastic. It’s a sensation that presses down, that bears on you.

In Spain it’s used constantly and in very different contexts:

“Tengo un agobio con el trabajo esta semana.” — I’m overwhelmed with work this week.

“Qué agobio de ciudad en agosto.” — This city is unbearable in August.

“Me agobia no saber qué va a pasar.” — Not knowing what’s going to happen is getting to me.

It also works as an adjective: una situación agobiante — an overwhelming situation — or as a state: estoy agobiado/a — I’m overwhelmed.

What’s interesting is that agobio is not panic or clinical anxiety. It’s something more everyday. A legitimate complaint about whatever is pressing too hard.

It’s worth noting that in Latin America the word exists, but doesn’t carry the same everyday weight. In Mexico, agotado or estresado are more commonly used to express similar feelings. In Argentina, agobiado appears but less frequently than in Spain, where the noun agobio is almost omnipresent. As with so many things in Spanish, the word is the same — but how it’s used says a lot about the culture of each place.

Una recomendación en clave de español

En consonancia con el tema de hoy, existe una serie española de 2015 ambientada precisamente en esta zona de Almería, y que recibe un nombre que no te vas a creer: Mar de plástico.

No la he visto, así que no voy a recomendarla con propiedad. Por lo que sé, es un thriller de cadena generalista con un poco de todo: crímenes, amor, intrigas. El tipo de serie que no reinventa nada, pero que, si estás aprendiendo español y buscas contenido real ambientado en España, puede ser una opción entretenida y accesible.

In keeping with today’s theme, there is a Spanish series from 2015 set precisely in this part of Almería, and with a name you won’t believe: Mar de plástico — The Sea of Plastic.

I haven’t seen it, so I won’t recommend it in good conscience. From what I know, it’s a mainstream network thriller with a bit of everything: crime, romance, intrigue. The kind of series that doesn’t reinvent anything, but if you’re learning Spanish and looking for content set in real Spain, it could be an entertaining and accessible option.

¡Hola a todos/as! Hace mucho que no escribo una edición de Spanish Lab, a pesar de que prometí hacerlo al menos una vez al mes. Mea culpa. Pero como decimos en España: nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena.

Hoy quiero hablaros de un problema al que yo mismo me enfrento cada vez que aprendo un idioma nuevo: encontrar contenido de calidad en la lengua meta. Pasarme horas intentando dar con el mejor material posible es un hábito que tengo muy arraigado y que acaba convirtiéndose en una espiral que no lleva a ningún lado, y mucho menos a lo que realmente importa: recibir ese input tan necesario.

Por eso hoy os hablo de una de mis plataformas favoritas para consumir contenido real en español: RTVE Play.

Como español que ha vivido fuera durante muchos años, la apuesta de la televisión pública por esta plataforma ha sido un auténtico salvavidas. Poder acceder al contenido que se consume en los hogares españoles (además del maravilloso catálogo que tiene la plataforma) reduce ese inevitable sentimiento de aislamiento que aparece cuando vives lejos. Y lo que para mí es un acercamiento a lo que llamo hogar, para vosotros, que estáis aprendiendo el idioma, puede ser una puerta de entrada a la cultura española real y al input más auténtico que existe.

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I last wrote a Spanish Lab edition, even though I promised to do it at least once a month. Mea culpa. But as we say in Spain: nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena — better late than never.

Today I want to talk about a problem I face every time I learn a new language: finding quality content in the target language. It’s a deeply ingrained habit of mine — spending hours trying to track down the best possible material — which ends up turning into a spiral that leads nowhere, and least of all to what actually matters: getting that much-needed input.

So today I’m telling you about one of my favourite platforms for consuming real Spanish content: RTVE Play.

As a Spaniard who lived abroad for many years, the investment Spain’s public broadcaster has made in this platform has been an absolute lifesaver. Being able to access the content that people watch in Spanish homes — with the full catalogue that comes with it — eases that inevitable sense of isolation that creeps in when you live far away. And what for me feels like a step closer to what I call home, for those of you learning the language, can be a doorway into real Spanish culture and the most authentic input you’ll find.

Acceder a RTVE Play es más sencillo de lo que parece. Solo tienes que entrar en rtve.es/play desde cualquier navegador y empezar a explorar. No hace falta crear una cuenta hasta dónde yo sé, aunque registrarse es gratuito y te permite guardar contenido para verlo más tarde y posiblemente acceder a más contenido (no he probado la opción sin registro, así que esto lo digo un poco por intuición).

La plataforma está organizada por categorías y es muy intuitiva: series, películas, documentales, informativos, infantil… Lo cual facilita bastante encontrar algo que se ajuste a tu nivel o a tus intereses. Mi recomendación es que no te pierdas demasiado tiempo navegando: elige algo, dale al play y empieza. Ya habrá tiempo de explorar más.

Un detalle importante: la mayoría del contenido tiene subtítulos disponibles en español, lo cual lo convierte en una herramienta ideal para el aprendizaje. Si eres principiante, úsalos sin culpa. Si ya tienes un nivel intermedio, prueba a ver un episodio sin ellos primero y luego con ellos para comprobar cuánto has entendido.

Accessing RTVE Play is simpler than it sounds. Just go to rtve.es/play from any browser and start exploring. As far as I know, you don’t need to create an account — though signing up is free and lets you save content to watch later, and possibly unlocks access to more content too (I haven’t actually tried it without an account, so I’m going partly on instinct here).

The platform is organised by category and very intuitive: series, films, documentaries, news, kids’ content… which makes it pretty easy to find something that suits your level or interests. My recommendation: don’t spend too long browsing. Pick something, hit play, and get started. There’ll be plenty of time to explore later.

One important detail: most content has Spanish subtitles available, which makes it an ideal learning tool. If you’re a beginner, use them — no guilt. If you’re at an intermediate level, try watching an episode without them first, then again with them to see how much you actually understood.

¿Qué me recomiendas?

Eso ya es más difícil y personal. Para gustos, colores. Lo que recomiendo principalmente es que dediquéis tiempo a explorar la plataforma y encontréis vuestro contenido preferente para escuchar y ver español. Os voy a dejar por aquí algunos de los contenidos más populares de la plataforma y de España para que os hagáis una idea:

Uno de los programas más vistos de España (especialmente por la gente joven) es La Revuelta, un late night de humor con entrevistas, sketches y un ambiente que recuerda más a una fiesta que a un plató de televisión. El programa tiene una dinámica muy particular y adictiva. Es ideal para niveles intermedios-avanzados: el humor es rápido, hay mucho argot y referencias culturales, pero precisamente por eso es oro puro para aprender español real.

Otro programa, en este caso un concurso, que te permitirá experimentar el español en situaciones reales y que goza de gran popularidad es Masterchef. El formato busca al mejor cocinero amateur de España y lleva en antena desde 2013. Lo que lo hace especialmente interesante para aprender español es que el vocabulario gira en torno a la cocina, las instrucciones, la presión y las emociones (todo ello en situaciones muy concretas y fáciles de seguir visualmente). Además, si la cocina española te interesa, es una ventana perfecta a ingredientes, técnicas y referencias gastronómicas del país. Existe también una versión con famosos, MasterChef Celebrity, que tiene un tono más distendido y quizás resulta más entretenida para niveles iniciales.

Si buscas una serie con la que sumergirte de verdad en la historia y la cultura española, Cuéntame cómo pasó es la recomendación obligatoria. Con 23 temporadas y 413 episodios emitidos entre 2001 y 2023, fue la serie de prime time más longeva de la historia de la televisión en España. Narra la vida de los Alcántara, una familia de clase media madrileña, desde los últimos años del franquismo hasta la llegada de la democracia. Es una ventana única a lo que vivieron generaciones enteras de españoles: el idioma es claro y accesible, el contexto histórico está siempre bien explicado, y es prácticamente imposible no encariñarse con los personajes.

Podría tirarme horas haciendo recomendaciones, pero lo mejor es que cada uno explore y encuentre lo que le engancha. La plataforma es gratuita, el catálogo es enorme, y la única regla es darle al play.

That’s a trickier one — and a more personal question. Different strokes for different folks. My main recommendation is that you spend some time exploring the platform and find the content that works best for you when it comes to listening to and watching Spanish. I’ll leave you with some of the most popular content on the platform and in Spain to give you a feel for what’s out there:

One of the most-watched shows in Spain (especially among younger audiences) is La Revuelta, a comedy late-night show with interviews, sketches, and an atmosphere that feels more like a party than a TV set. The show has a very particular and addictive dynamic. Best suited for intermediate to advanced learners — the humour is fast, there’s plenty of slang and cultural references, but that’s exactly what makes it gold for learning real Spanish.

Another programme — this time a competition format — that will let you experience Spanish in real-life situations and is hugely popular in Spain is MasterChef. The show has been searching for the best amateur cook in Spain since 2013. What makes it particularly useful for language learners is that the vocabulary revolves around cooking, instructions, pressure and emotions — all in very specific, visually supported situations that are easy to follow. And if Spanish cuisine interests you, it’s a perfect window into the ingredients, techniques and food culture of the country. There’s also a celebrity version, MasterChef Celebrity, which has a more relaxed tone and might be more entertaining for beginners.

If you’re looking for a series that will truly immerse you in Spanish history and culture, Cuéntame cómo pasó is the essential recommendation. With 23 seasons and 413 episodes broadcast between 2001 and 2023, it was the longest-running prime time series in the history of Spanish television. It follows the Alcántara family, a middle-class Madrid household, through the final years of the Franco dictatorship and into the arrival of democracy. 🗝️ El Glosario

• Mea culpa — a Latin expression used in Spanish (and English) to admit personal fault or responsibility. More dramatic than a simple “sorry”, and often used with a touch of humour. “Prometí escribir una vez al mes. Mea culpa.”

• Lengua meta — the target language — the language you are actively trying to learn. A term used in linguistics and language teaching that has made its way into everyday conversation among language learners. “Encontrar contenido de calidad en la lengua meta es más difícil de lo que parece.”

• Nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena — better late than never — literally, “it’s never too late if the joy is good”. A common Spanish proverb used to justify arriving late to something, whether physically or metaphorically. “Prometí escribir esto hace meses. Nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena.”

• Para gustos, colores — different strokes for different folks — literally, “for tastes, colours”. One of those expressions that resists direct translation but everyone understands immediately. Used to acknowledge that personal preferences vary and none is more valid than another.

• Argot — slang — informal, colloquial language used within a particular group or in everyday speech. In Spain, argot changes quickly and varies a lot by region and generation. “En La Revuelta hay mucho argot y referencias culturales.”

• Plató — TV set or studio — the physical space where a television programme is filmed. Not to be confused with plateau in English, despite the similar spelling. “Un ambiente que recuerda más a una fiesta que a un plató de televisión.”

• El franquismo — the Franco dictatorship — the political regime led by Francisco Franco that governed Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. A period of enormous cultural, social and political weight that continues to shape Spanish identity and conversation today.

• Engancharse — to get hooked — to become addicted to or captivated by something, whether a series, a habit or a person. One of those verbs that feels more visceral in Spanish than any English equivalent. “La única regla es encontrar lo que te engancha.”

La curiosidad cultural

En el sur de España, haciendo frontera con Cádiz, hay un pequeño trozo de tierra que pertenece al Reino Unido y que desde siempre ha levantado ampollas a uno y otro lado de la verja. Pero hoy no vengo a hablar de política. Vengo a hablar de algo que me deja literalmente sin palabras cada vez que lo encuentro en algún rincón de internet.

La mezcla cultural de Gibraltar (inglés británico con andaluz cerrado, de toda la vida) ha dado lugar a una variación lingüística que se conoce como llanito. Y el llanito no es una mezcla torpe, no es que la gente no sepa bien qué idioma hablar. Es algo con lógica propia, con una gramática que sabe exactamente en qué lengua está en cada momento aunque cambie a mitad de frase. No alternan idiomas como quien cambia de canal: construyen oraciones que pertenecen a las dos lenguas a la vez.

Podría pasarme horas escuchando a los gibraltareños fluir entre el español andaluz y el inglés británico. Lo más sorprendente es que si dominas ambas lenguas, el cerebro desconecta. Deja de registrar el cambio. Y de repente ya no sabes cuándo estás en una y cuándo en la otra.

La verdad que hay algo en el llanito que me hipnotiza y podría pasarme horas escuchándolo.

In the south of Spain, right on the border with Cádiz, there is a small patch of land that belongs to the United Kingdom — and that has always rubbed people up the wrong way on both sides of the fence. But I’m not here to talk about politics today. I’m here to talk about something that leaves me literally speechless every time I come across it somewhere on the internet.

The cultural mix of Gibraltar — British English colliding with thick Andalusian Spanish, as it has for generations — has given rise to a linguistic variation known as llanito. And llanito is not some clumsy blend, not a sign that people can’t quite decide which language they’re speaking. It has its own logic, its own grammar that knows exactly which language it’s in at any given moment, even mid-sentence. Speakers don’t switch languages the way you’d flick between channels: they build sentences that belong to both at once.

I could spend hours listening to Gibraltarians move between Andalusian Spanish and British English. The most remarkable thing is that if you know both languages well, your brain just... switches off. It stops registering the shift. And suddenly you can no longer tell which one you’re in.

There’s something about llanito that genuinely hypnotises me. I could listen to it for hours.

Lo que he visto

Esta semana, mi mujer y yo vimos La grazia, lo último de Paolo Sorrentino. Un presidente ficticio de la República italiana, al final de su mandato, enfrentándose a dilemas morales que ya no sabe muy bien cómo resolver. Eso, en manos de Sorrentino, da para mucho.

Me pasa con este director algo parecido a lo que os contaba antes con el llanito: hay algo en su estética que me invita a quedarme dentro, a no querer salir. Sorrentino ha filmado aquí una de sus cintas más austeras hasta la fecha, más contenida que otras suyas, pero sin perder lo que le hace inconfundible: esa capacidad para convertir un plano en algo casi hipnótico, para filmar la melancolía con una elegancia que duele un poco.

Es rara la película suya que me deja un mal sabor de boca. Y es que solo por la fotografía, por esa reivindicación de lo clásico y lo mediterráneo, ya merece el viaje. Entiendo que no es cine para todos. Para algunos puede resultar lenta o frustrante. Pero yo la recomiendo sin dudarlo: gran fotografía, gran estética, y un fondo existencialista que se te queda pegado mucho después de que acaben los créditos.

This week, my wife and I watched La grazia, Paolo Sorrentino’s latest film. A fictional president of the Italian Republic, at the end of his term, facing moral dilemmas he no longer quite knows how to resolve. In Sorrentino’s hands, that’s more than enough to work with.

Something happens to me with this director that’s not unlike what I was telling you about llanito earlier: there’s something in his aesthetic that invites me to stay inside it, to not want to leave. He has made one of his most restrained films here — more contained than others — but without losing what makes him unmistakable: that ability to turn a single shot into something almost hypnotic, to film melancholy with an elegance that stings a little.

It’s rare that one of his films leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And honestly, the photography alone — that celebration of the classical and the Mediterranean — is already worth the trip. I understand it’s not cinema for everyone. Some may find it slow or frustrating. But I recommend it without hesitation: stunning visuals, a distinctive aesthetic, and an existentialist undercurrent that stays with you long after the credits roll.

Una recomendación en clave de español

Esta semana os traigo una recomendación que es, a la vez, un retrato de familia y un trozo de la cultura española más auténtica.

Flores para Antonio es un documental de 2025 en el que Alba Flores (actriz bastante conocida por su participación en La casa de papel) se embarca en la búsqueda de su padre: Antonio Flores, músico legendario que murió cuando ella tenía ocho años. Alba dejó de cantar al perderle. Este documental es su intento de recuperar su voz y reconciliarse con su propia historia.

El motivo por el que os recomiendo Flores para Antonio es porque es una de esas piezas que solo pueden entenderse del todo si conoces el idioma desde dentro. La música de Antonio combina rock, blues y tintes flamencos, con letras cargadas de sensibilidad, amor y poesía urbana. Canciones como No dudaría forman parte del imaginario colectivo español de una manera que es muy difícil de explicar desde fuera: hay palabras, hay giros, hay una forma de sentir que vive en la letra y que solo se abre del todo cuando el español es tuyo.

Y luego está el clan Flores en sí: Lola, Rosario, Lolita, Antonio. Una familia que es casi un símbolo cultural en este país, con toda la carga emocional que eso conlleva. El documental recorre esa memoria familiar a través de dibujos, collages, cintas inéditas y la voz de gente como Joaquín Sabina o Ariel Rot.

Lo encontráis en Movistar Plus+. Y si estáis aprendiendo español, es el tipo de documento cultural que vale más que cien horas de clase.

This week I bring you a recommendation that is, at the same time, a family portrait and a piece of the most authentic Spanish culture.

Flores para Antonio is a 2025 documentary in which Alba Flores — the actress, probably best known internationally for her role in Money Heist — sets out in search of her father: Antonio Flores, a legendary musician who died when she was eight years old. Alba stopped singing when she lost him. This documentary is her attempt to find her voice again and make peace with her own story.

The reason I’m recommending Flores para Antonio in this section is because it’s one of those pieces you can only fully understand if you know the language from the inside. Antonio’s music blends rock, blues and flashes of flamenco, with lyrics full of sensitivity, love and urban poetry. Songs like No dudaría are woven into the Spanish collective consciousness in a way that’s very hard to explain from the outside: there are words, turns of phrase, a way of feeling that lives inside the lyrics — and that only fully opens up when Spanish is yours.

And then there’s the Flores family itself: Lola, Rosario, Lolita, Antonio. A family that is almost a cultural symbol in this country, with all the emotional weight that carries. The documentary traces that family memory through drawings, collages, unseen footage and the voices of people like Joaquín Sabina and Ariel Rot.

You can find it on Movistar Plus+. And if you’re learning Spanish, this is the kind of cultural document that’s worth more than a hundred hours of class.

• Levantar ampollas — literally to raise blisters — used when something stirs controversy or rubs people the wrong way. “Gibraltar siempre ha levantado ampollas a uno y otro lado de la verja.”

• La verja — the fence or gate — in the context of Gibraltar, it refers specifically to the border crossing between Spain and the British territory. A word loaded with political and historical meaning.

• El imaginario colectivo — the collective imagination or shared cultural consciousness. Used to describe the ideas, symbols and feelings a society holds in common. “Canciones como No dudaría forman parte del imaginario colectivo español.”

• Giros — turns of phrase — the small idiomatic twists that make a language feel alive and that are almost impossible to translate literally. “Hay palabras, hay giros, hay una forma de sentir que solo se abre del todo cuando el español es tuyo.”

• Trasfondo — the underlying layer, the deeper meaning beneath the surface of something. “Una gran película con un trasfondo existencialista.”

Como seguramente ya sabéis, el último fin de semana de marzo se lleva a cabo un cambio de hora en toda Europa para adoptar el llamado horario de verano.

Lo cierto es que, viviendo en Centroeuropa, esperaba este cambio como agua de mayo. Llegar al final de un invierno largo, donde a las cuatro de la tarde ya es de noche, y ganarle una hora a la luz del día cambia mucho el estado de ánimo y la manera de vivir los días. Sin embargo, de vuelta en España, este cambio de hora me ha trastocado por completo. Ya se hacía de noche cerca de las ocho de la tarde en marzo y, con el cambio de hora, en plena primavera, anochece a eso de las nueve. Desde mi perspectiva, acostumbrado ya a unos ritmos algo distintos a los españoles, me descoloca bastante. Más de una semana después, todavía me siento extraño y, honestamente, no sé si termina de gustarme.

Hay un gran debate en España entre quienes defienden el horario de verano y quienes adoptarían el horario de invierno de manera indefinida, y este debate lleva años trasladándose incluso al ámbito político.

Yo, antes de salir de España, era un ferviente defensor de que anocheciera lo más tarde posible y miraba con extrañeza a los guiris que cenaban en una terraza a las seis o siete de la tarde. Después de vivir fuera y adaptarme a otras formas de vida, tengo que reconocer que, aunque los españoles vivimos la vida a nuestro modo y hay mucho de positivo en eso, creo que esto no es una de las cosas que nos favorece. Tenemos unos horarios —tanto laborales como de comidas— un poco desajustados, especialmente a la hora de la cena. En España está muy arraigada la idea de cenar cuando cae la noche, lo que hace que, con este horario, mucha gente acabe cenando fácilmente a las diez, con las consecuencias que eso tiene: irse a la cama con el estómago lleno o acostarse bastante tarde.

A mí no me termina de convencer y sé que no estoy solo en esto. Dicho lo cual, mucha gente opina lo contrario y disfruta de unas tardes más largas. Para gustos, los colores. Me gustaría saber vuestra opinión:

As you probably know, on the last weekend of March, clocks change across Europe to adopt what’s known as summer time.

The truth is that, living in Central Europe, I used to look forward to this change. Coming out of a long winter — where it’s already dark by four in the afternoon — and gaining an extra hour of daylight makes a real difference to your mood and the way you experience your days. Back in Spain, however, this time change has thrown me off completely. It was already getting dark around eight in the evening in March, and now, in the middle of spring, night falls at around nine. From my perspective — having grown used to a rather different rhythm from the Spanish one — it’s quite disorienting. More than a week later, I still feel out of sorts and, honestly, I’m not sure I like it.

There’s an ongoing debate in Spain between those who support summer time and those who would keep winter time permanently, and this debate has been making its way into the political arena for years.

Before I left Spain, I was a firm believer that the later it got dark, the better — and I used to look at those guiris eating dinner on a terrace at six or seven in the evening as if they were mad. After living abroad and adapting to different ways of life, I have to admit that, while Spaniards have a wonderful way of living and there’s a lot to be said for it, I don’t think this particular aspect does us any favours. Our schedules — both work and mealtimes — are a little out of sync, especially when it comes to dinner. In Spain, there’s a deeply ingrained idea that you eat dinner when the sun goes down, which means that, with this time change, a lot of people end up having dinner easily at ten at night — with all the consequences that brings: going to bed on a full stomach, or going to bed quite late.

I’m not fully convinced by it, and I know I’m not alone. That said, plenty of people feel the opposite and love having those longer evenings. Different strokes for different folks. I’d love to hear what you think (you can vote below the text in Spanish).

Uno de mis pueblos favoritos de mi provincia es La Isleta del Moro, un pequeño pueblo pesquero en el corazón del maravilloso Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata.

Recuerdo pasar allí varios veranos de mi adolescencia. De esos veranos en los que el tiempo parecía no tener prisa, donde los días se estiraban entre el olor a salitre, los barcos de los pescadores y el color imposible del agua. Un lugar donde todavía se respira algo que en muchos sitios ya se ha perdido: la calma de lo auténtico.

Es un pueblo pequeño, de los de verdad. Unas pocas casas encaladas asomadas al mar, una playa de piedras y arena oscura volcánica, y la sensación constante de que el mundo va más despacio aquí. Su nombre, curiosamente, tiene origen en una pequeña isleta rocosa frente a la costa que en su día sirvió de refugio y punto de vigilancia frente a los ataques piratas que asolaban esta costa durante los siglos XVI y XVII. Esa historia de aislamiento y resistencia se nota todavía en el carácter del lugar.

El pueblo nació y creció alrededor de la pesca, y aunque el turismo ha llegado como a todos lados, sigue siendo una comunidad de pescadores. No hay grandes infraestructuras ni turismo masivo, y esa es precisamente su magia. En verano, las barcas siguen saliendo al amanecer y por las tardes se puede comprar el pescado directamente a quien lo ha sacado del mar esa misma mañana.

One of my favourite villages in my province is La Isleta del Moro, a small fishing village in the heart of the stunning Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

I remember spending several summers there during my teenage years. The kind of summers where time seemed to be in no hurry, where the days stretched out between the smell of saltwater, the fishermen’s boats and the impossible colour of the water. A place where you can still breathe something that has been lost in so many other spots: the quiet of the real.

It’s a small village, genuinely small. A few whitewashed houses looking out to sea, a beach of rocks and dark volcanic sand, and the constant feeling that the world moves a little slower here. Its name, interestingly, comes from a small rocky islet just off the coast that once served as a refuge and lookout point against the pirate raids that plagued this coastline during the 16th and 17th centuries. That history of isolation and resilience can still be felt in the character of the place.

The village was born and grew around fishing, and although tourism has arrived — as it has everywhere — it remains a fishing community at heart. There are no big developments or mass tourism, and that is precisely its magic. In summer, the boats still head out at dawn, and in the afternoons you can buy fish directly from the person who pulled it out of the sea that very morning.

If you ever visit Almería and want to escape the noise, you know where to go.

🇪🇸 Una recomendación en clave de español · A Spanish-flavoured recommendation

La semana pasada vi El maestro que prometió el mar, una película basada en hechos reales sobre la vida de Antoni Benaiges, un maestro catalán que llega a un pequeño pueblo de Burgos en los meses previos al estallido de la Guerra Civil. Una película muy necesaria sobre las injusticias cometidas durante aquella época, y especialmente emotiva para quienes, como yo, nos dedicamos al mundo de la educación. Es maravilloso ver cómo, hace casi cien años, ya se aplicaban en pequeñas aulas de pueblo métodos que hoy en día se considerarían revolucionarios en la mayoría de centros educativos.

Last week I watched The Teacher Who Promised the Sea, a film based on the true story of Antoni Benaiges, a Catalan teacher who arrives in a small village in Burgos in the months leading up to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. A deeply necessary film about the injustices committed during that period, and one that will resonate especially with those of us who work in education. It's wonderful to see how, almost a hundred years ago, methods were already being used in tiny village classrooms that would be considered revolutionary in most schools today.

Llevo tres semanas de vuelta en mi ciudad natal y todo se ve diferente. Es raro volver: el lugar es el mismo, pero yo he cambiado. El trabajo estable que tenía en Centroeuropa aquí no existe, y los planes que tenía para los próximos meses han desaparecido. En parte, por la situación política en Oriente Medio, que cada vez se nota más cerca.

En medio de todo esto, escuché hablar sobre una idea del filósofo Albert Camus. Él escribió que ser pobre en un lugar soleado y mediterráneo es diferente a serlo en un lugar frío y oscuro. La belleza del entorno cambia cómo vivimos las cosas difíciles.

No sé si tiene razón. Pero sí noto que la incertidumbre, aquí, con este sol, se lleva mejor. Y por ahora, eso me basta.

Welcome to a new edition of Insight Cultural, your trusted newsletter!

I have been back in my hometown for three weeks now and everything looks different. It feels strange to return: the place is the same, but I have changed. The stable work I had in Central Europe does not exist here, and the plans I had for the coming months have disappeared. Partly because of the political situation in the Middle East, which is starting to feel closer and closer.

In the middle of all this, I heard someone talk about an idea by the philosopher Albert Camus. He wrote that being poor in a sunny, Mediterranean place is different from being poor in a cold, dark one. The beauty of the surroundings changes how we experience difficult things.

I do not know if he is right. But I do notice that uncertainty, here, with this sun, is easier to carry. And for now, that is enough.

And speaking of new beginnings: in the middle of all this uncertainty, I have decided to open online Spanish classes again. If you are reading this and are interested, write to me. I would love to hear from you.

¿Sabías que en España hay personas que se visten de fantasma para pedir perdón?

La Semana Santa es una de las celebraciones más importantes de España. Cada año, entre marzo y abril, miles de personas salen a la calle para conmemorar la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo. Pero no lo hacen de cualquier manera.

Lo más llamativo son las procesiones: largas filas de personas que caminan por las calles en silencio, con música, imágenes religiosas enormes y mucho incienso. Entre ellos, hay un grupo que llama especialmente la atención: los nazarenos. Visten túnicas largas y capuchas puntiagudas que les tapan completamente la cara. Su origen es religioso: ese anonimato simboliza la humildad. La persona que camina bajo la túnica no importa. Lo que importa es el acto de penitencia.

La Semana Santa más famosa es la de Sevilla, conocida en todo el mundo por su dramatismo y su belleza. Pero cada ciudad y cada pueblo tiene la suya propia, con sus tradiciones y sus particularidades.

Y un último detalle curioso: esas capuchas puntiagudas tienen un nombre propio en español, capirote, y su imagen ha viajado tan lejos que en algunos países se asocia con algo muy diferente y mucho menos espiritual. Un malentendido cultural de dimensiones históricas.

Did you know that in Spain there are people who dress like ghosts to ask for forgiveness?

Holy Week is one of the most important celebrations in Spain. Every year, between March and April, thousands of people take to the streets to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But not in just any way.

The most striking part are the processions: long lines of people walking through the streets in silence, with music, enormous religious figures and a lot of incense. Among them, there is a group that draws particular attention: the nazarenos. They wear long robes and pointed hoods that completely cover their faces. Their origin is religious: that anonymity symbolises humility. The person walking under the robe does not matter. What matters is the act of penance.

The most famous Holy Week is the one in Seville, known throughout the world for its drama and beauty. But every city and every town has its own, with its own traditions and particularities.

And one last curious detail: those pointed hoods have their own name in Spanish, capirote, and their image has travelled so far that in some countries it is associated with something very different and much less spiritual. A cultural misunderstanding of historic proportions.

Lo que he visto

La semana pasada vimos la serie noruega Un hombre mejor. La trama es sencilla: un hombre solitario y misógino que alimenta su odio en internet queda expuesto después de un escándalo a nivel nacional. Lo que hace para escapar es, cuanto menos, sorprendente: se presenta en sociedad como mujer. A partir de ahí, la serie profundiza en temas muy interesantes: el papel de la mujer en la sociedad, el machismo y los peligros de internet. Una serie diferente, necesaria y muy recomendable.

Last week we watched the Norwegian series Un hombre mejor — A Better Man in English. The plot is simple: a lonely, misogynistic man who feeds his hatred online is exposed after a nationwide scandal. What he does to escape is, to say the least, surprising: he presents himself to society as a woman. From there, the series explores some very interesting themes: the role of women in society, sexism, and the dangers of the internet. A different, necessary and highly recommended series.

Una recomendación en clave de español

Hoy, para seguir con la temática de Semana Santa, vengo a recomendaros algo para entenderla desde dentro: su música. Normalmente, a las procesiones le acompañan un sonido muy característico que puedes escuchar en las calles durante toda la semana: la banda de cornetas y tambores. Es un sonido grave, lento y muy emocionante. Una de las marchas más famosas es Amarguras, compuesta por José Font Marimont en 1919. Más de cien años después, sigue sonando en las calles de toda España cada primavera. Te dejo un video para que lo escuches con los ojos cerrados. No necesitas entender nada más.

Y os dejo la que, personalmente es una de mis favoritas:

Today, to continue with the Holy Week theme, I want to recommend something to help you understand it from the inside: its music. Processions are usually accompanied by a very distinctive sound that you can hear in the streets throughout the entire week: the brass and drum band. It is a deep, slow and deeply moving sound. One of the most famous marches is Amarguras, composed by José Font Marimont in 1919. More than a hundred years later, it still plays in the streets all over Spain every spring. Después de cinco años viviendo entre Chequia y Eslovaquia, ha llegado el momento de cerrar esta etapa. No ha sido una decisión fácil, pero a veces la única manera de salir de una espiral complicada cuando se vive fuera es tomar decisiones drásticas y romper con todo.

Ahora toca volver a España, descansar la mente y coger energía para los nuevos retos que se avecinan. Es una etapa transitoria, aunque los planes a corto plazo puede que se vean afectados por la situación tan convulsa que está viviendo el mundo. Tiempos inciertos que hay que abrazar con paciencia.

After five years living between the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the time has come to close this chapter. It wasn’t an easy decision, but sometimes the only way out of a complicated spiral when you live abroad is to make drastic decisions and break with everything.

Now it’s time to return to Spain, rest my mind and gather energy for the new challenges ahead. It’s a transitional period, though my short-term plans may be affected by the turbulent situation the world is going through. Uncertain times that must be embraced with patience.

La curiosidad cultural

¿Sabías que en Galicia existe una procesión de muertos que camina por los bosques de noche?

La Santa Compaña es una leyenda muy popular del noroeste de España, especialmente en Galicia. Cuenta la historia de un grupo de almas en pena, es decir, espíritus de personas muertas, que caminan en procesión por los caminos y bosques durante la noche. Visten túnicas oscuras, llevan velas encendidas y caminan descalzas mientras entonan rezos en voz baja.

Lo más curioso de la leyenda es que la procesión va guiada por una persona viva que lleva una cruz. Esta persona no recuerda nada de lo que ocurre durante la noche y está condenada a caminar con los muertos cada noche hasta morir de agotamiento. La única forma de escapar es entregarle la cruz a alguien que se cruce en su camino, convirtiéndolo así en el nuevo guía.

El origen de esta leyenda se encuentra probablemente en el Samhain, una festividad celta en la que se creía que los espíritus de los muertos podían caminar entre los vivos. Con la llegada del cristianismo, esta creencia antigua fue transformándose hasta convertirse en la leyenda que conocemos hoy.

Y un último detalle curioso: algunos expertos señalan que llamarla “santa” es un error, porque la Compaña puede ser muchas cosas, pero santa, desde luego, no lo es.

Did you know that in Galicia there is a procession of the dead that walks through the forests at night?

La Santa Compaña is a very popular legend from the northwest of Spain, especially in Galicia. It tells the story of a group of restless souls — that is, spirits of dead people — who walk in procession along roads and through forests during the night. They wear dark robes, carry lit candles, and walk barefoot while whispering prayers.

The most curious part of the legend is that the procession is led by a living person carrying a cross. This person has no memory of what happens during the night and is condemned to walk with the dead every night until they die of exhaustion. The only way to escape is to hand the cross to someone who crosses their path, making that person the new guide.

The origin of this legend most likely lies in Samhain, a Celtic festival during which it was believed that the spirits of the dead could walk among the living. With the arrival of Christianity, this ancient belief gradually transformed into the legend we know today.

One last curious detail: some experts point out that calling it “santa” — meaning holy — is actually a mistake, because the Compaña may be many things, but holy it certainly is not.

Lo que he leído

La semana pasada terminé la novela Comerás flores, de Lucía Solla Sobral. El libro cuenta la historia de Marina, una chica joven que a los pocos meses de perder a su padre conoce a Jaime, un hombre veinte años mayor que ella. Poco a poco, Marina se va sumergiendo en el mundo de Jaime y deja atrás la vida que tenía. Jaime es encantador y tiene ganada a toda la familia, así que ¿qué podría salir mal?

Lo que parece de color de rosa va convirtiéndose en gris oscuro, casi negro, narrando algo que muchas veces no sale a la luz pero que existe y puede llegar a ser aterrador: el maltrato psicológico.

Una novela necesaria, incómoda en el buen sentido, y que te hace reflexionar mucho después de cerrarla. Muy recomendable.

Last week I finished the novel Comerás flores, by Lucía Solla Sobral. The book tells the story of Marina, a young woman who, just a few months after losing her father, meets Jaime, a man twenty years her senior. Little by little, Marina becomes absorbed into Jaime’s world and leaves her old life behind. Jaime is charming and has won over the whole family — so what could possibly go wrong?

What starts out rosy gradually turns dark grey, almost black, portraying something that often goes unseen but exists and can be truly terrifying: psychological abuse.

A necessary novel, uncomfortable in the best possible way, that stays with you long after you’ve closed it. Highly recommended.

Una recomendación en clave de español

Llevaba mucho tiempo intentando verla y esta semana por fin lo he conseguido. Hablo de Los domingos, de Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, que se ha llevado cinco premios Goya en la reciente gala. En el poco tiempo que llevo escribiendo esta newsletter, el nombre de esta directora ya ha aparecido en varias ocasiones, y es que, en mi opinión, se está consolidando como una de las voces más importantes del cine español actual.

La película sigue a Ainara, una chica de diecisiete años a punto de terminar el instituto. El camino habitual a estas alturas sería decidir qué carrera estudiar, pero Ainara lo tiene claro: está enamorada de Dios y quiere ser monja de clausura. Una decisión que pilla por sorpresa a su familia y que Alauda Ruiz de Azúa convierte, una vez más, en una compleja trama de relaciones familiares que te hace pensar. Una película muy recomendable que aborda un tema poco habitual desde una perspectiva fresca e inesperada.

I had been trying to watch it for a long time and this week I finally managed to. I’m talking about Los domingos, by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, which won five Goya Awards at the recent ceremony. In the short time I’ve been writing this newsletter, this director’s name has already come up on several occasions — in my opinion, she is establishing herself as one of the most important voices in contemporary Spanish cinema.

The film follows Ainara, a seventeen-year-old girl who is about to finish high school. The usual path at this point would be to decide what to study at university, but Ainara has no doubts: she is in love with God and wants to become a cloistered nun. A decision that catches her family off guard, and which Alauda Ruiz de Azúa once again turns into a complex web of family relationships that keeps you thinking long after the credits roll. A highly recommended film that tackles an unusual subject from a fresh and unexpected perspective.

La reflexión

Estas últimas semanas he estado tentado de dejar la newsletter de manera definitiva. Cada vez que abría Substack veía lo mismo: publicaciones diseñadas para captar atención, contenido vacío para alimentar al algoritmo. Llegué aquí buscando un refugio del ruido de Instagram, TikTok o X, pero poco a poco Substack se está convirtiendo en más de lo mismo.

Me pregunté si tenía sentido buscar un hueco entre ese ruido. La respuesta es sí, pero no a cualquier precio. No quiero formar parte de estrategias de marketing que te obligan a publicar sin parar para crecer. Prefiero la calidad a la cantidad, aunque eso signifique crecer más despacio.

He tomado una decisión: voy a seguir adelante, pero con un formato más sostenible. A partir de ahora, Insight Spanish se centrará en los Insights Culturales, un formato accesible y consistente que encaja bien en esta red. De vez en cuando también aparecerá el Spanish Lab, con recursos y recomendaciones para mejorar el español. Todo el contenido será bilingüe, con traducción al inglés.

En marzo es posible que lance una nueva newsletter sobre educación. Os mantendré informados.

Welcome to a new edition of Insight Spanish!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been tempted to shut down the newsletter for good. Every time I opened Substack I saw the same thing: posts designed to grab attention, empty content to feed the algorithm. I came here looking for a refuge from the noise of Instagram, TikTok, or X, but little by little Substack is becoming more of the same.

I asked myself whether it made sense to carve out a space in all that noise. The answer is yes, but not at any cost. I don’t want to be part of marketing strategies that force you to publish non-stop just to grow. I’d rather prioritize quality over quantity, even if that means growing more slowly.

I’ve made a decision: I’m going to keep going, but with a more sustainable format. From now on, Insight Spanish will focus on Cultural Insights, an accessible and consistent format that fits well on this platform. Every now and then I’ll also bring back the Spanish Lab, with resources and recommendations to help you improve your Spanish. All content will be bilingual, with an English translation.

In March I may be launching a new newsletter about education. I’ll keep you posted.

La curiosidad cultural

¿Sabías que los delfines respiran de manera consciente?

Viendo el documental The Cove me llamó la atención una explicación de Ric O’Barry, antiguo entrenador de delfines y famoso por haber entrenado a Kathy, el delfín que interpretaba a Flipper en la serie de los años 60. Hoy es uno de los activistas más reconocidos contra el cautiverio de cetáceos.

Según cuenta Ric, lo que le impulsó a luchar contra la industria que él mismo ayudó a crear fue el suicidio de Kathy: un día, el delfín simplemente decidió dejar de respirar. Y es que, a diferencia de nosotros, los delfines respiran de manera consciente.

Los humanos respiramos de forma automática: nuestro cerebro lo hace sin que tengamos que pensarlo. Los delfines, en cambio, son respiradores voluntarios. Cada vez que necesitan aire, toman una decisión activa de subir a la superficie y respirar. Esto significa que nunca duermen del todo: mantienen la mitad del cerebro activa para no olvidarse de respirar, un fenómeno que los científicos llaman sueño unihemisférico.

Esta característica también explica por qué el cautiverio es especialmente duro para ellos. Un delfín sometido a un estrés extremo puede, literalmente, rendirse y dejar de respirar. No es una metáfora: es una decisión biológica posible. Quizás la verdadera libertad, para ellos, está en cada respiración que eligen dar.

Did you know that dolphins breathe consciously?

While watching the documentary The Cove, I was struck by something Ric O’Barry said. Ric is a former dolphin trainer, best known for training Kathy, the dolphin who played Flipper in the 1960s TV series. Today he is one of the most prominent activists against the captivity of cetaceans.

According to Ric, what drove him to fight against the very industry he helped build was the suicide of Kathy: one day, the dolphin simply chose to stop breathing. And that’s because, unlike us, dolphins breathe consciously.

Humans breathe automatically: our brain does it without us having to think about it. Dolphins, on the other hand, are voluntary breathers. Every time they need air, they make an active decision to surface and breathe. This means they never fully sleep: they keep half of their brain active so they don’t forget to breathe, a phenomenon scientists call unihemispheric sleep.

This characteristic also explains why captivity is especially hard on them. A dolphin under extreme stress can, literally, give up and stop breathing. It’s not a metaphor — it’s a biologically possible choice.

Perhaps true freedom, for them, lies in every breath they choose to take.

Lo que he visto

Esta semana he visto Hamnet, la última película de Chloé Zhao y adaptación de la novela homónima de Maggie O’Farrell. La historia narra, con elementos de ficción aunque respaldada por algunas teorías históricas, el suceso que pudo dar origen a la tragedia Hamlet de William Shakespeare.

Una película visualmente maravillosa sobre el duelo, el amor y la pérdida en la Inglaterra del siglo XVI. Las actuaciones de Jessie Buckley y Paul Mescal son excepcionales.

This week I watched Hamnet, Chloé Zhao’s latest film and an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel of the same name. The story portrays, with elements of fiction though supported by some historical theories, the event that may have inspired William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet.

A visually stunning film about grief, love and loss in sixteenth-century England. The performances of Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal are exceptional.

Una recomendación en clave de español

La semana pasada, mientras escuchaba Spotify en modo aleatorio, el algoritmo que tanto odio me hizo un favor inesperado: recomendarme el último disco de Russian Red, una artista española que escuchaba con frecuencia durante mi adolescencia y que tiene algo en su música que me hace desconectar del ruido del mundo.

Aunque el disco es de 2024, no conocía su existencia, y tiene algo particular: está cantado íntegramente en español. Russian Red, a pesar de ser española, ha desarrollado toda su carrera escribiendo y cantando en inglés, por lo que escucharla en su lengua materna es una experiencia diferente y, si cabe, aún más especial.

Last week, while listening to Spotify on shuffle, the algorithm I love to hate did me an unexpected favor: recommending the latest album by Russian Red, a Spanish artist I used to listen to frequently during my teenage years, and whose music has something that makes me disconnect from the noisy world.

Although the album came out in 2024, I had no idea it existed — and it has something special about it: it is sung entirely in Spanish. Russian Red, despite being Spanish, has built her entire career writing and singing in English, which makes hearing her in her mother tongue a different and, if anything, even more special experience.

I’d encourage you to take a moment to relax and listen to Volverme a enamorar.

Una de las cosas que más me ha ayudado a entender mejor diferentes países o culturas y que me acompaña desde hace muchos años de manera semanal es el cine. Y es que dicen que para conocer un país no basta con mirar el mapa, hay que escuchar sus historias.

Si estás aprendiendo español, seguro que ya te has peleado con las listas de verbos y los audios de diferentes libros de texto. Pero seamos sinceros: el idioma real no está en los manuales. El español de verdad —el que late, el que se ríe y el que insulta con arte— está en las conversaciones de barra de bar, en los silencios de un pueblo remoto y, sobre todo, en su cine.

Ver cine español no es solo un ejercicio de listening. Es una inmersión profunda en la psique de un país que es, a la vez, pasional, contradictorio, histórico y rabiosamente moderno. A través de la pantalla, puedes:

• Entrenar el oído: Captar los diferentes acentos, desde el deje gallego hasta el ritmo andaluz.

• Aprender contexto: Entender por qué la Guerra Civil sigue siendo una herida abierta o cómo es la vida en la España vaciada.

• Robar expresiones: Esas frases que solo un nativo diría y que te harán sonar mucho más natural.

Esta semana, he seleccionado 10 películas del siglo XXI que son mucho más que entretenimiento. Son diez ventanas abiertas para que entiendas mejor España y, de paso, lleves tu español al siguiente nivel.

Mis diez imprescindibles del cine español del siglo XXI

Lo primero de todo, decir que esta es una selección personal y es, por supuesto, cuestión de gustos. Son muchas las películas españolas de este siglo que merecen reconocimiento y yo he elegido aquellas que para mí destacan por encima del resto. Si tienes alguna que quieras incluir o si te gustaría darme tu opinión sobre alguna de ellas, házmelo saber en los comentarios.

1. As Bestas (2022)

   • El porqué: Una lección magistral sobre la xenofobia y la tensión rural. Es ideal para observar el choque cultural entre lo urbano y lo agrícola, además de practicar la escucha con el contraste entre el francés, el castellano y el gallego.

     

2. Los lunes al sol (2002)

   • El porqué: Retrata de forma cruda y humana las consecuencias del desempleo industrial. Es cine social puro; esencial para entender la identidad de la clase obrera española y manejar el lenguaje coloquial de “barrio”.

     

3. Te doy mis ojos (2003)

   • El porqué: Fue pionera en abordar la violencia de género con una sensibilidad extrema. Te ayudará a entender dinámicas familiares complejas y a apreciar una de las interpretaciones más premiadas del cine español.

     

4. El laberinto del fauno (2006)

   • El porqué: La fantasía se mezcla con la posguerra. Es perfecta para conocer la simbología de la resistencia española tras la Guerra Civil mientras disfrutas de una estética visual que hizo historia en los Oscar.

   

5. La trinchera infinita (2019)

   • El porqué: Explora la figura de los “topos”: personas que vivieron escondidas décadas por miedo a la represión franquista. Un ejercicio claustrofóbico que explica gran parte del miedo histórico del país.

     

6. El reino (2018)

   • El porqué: Si quieres entender cómo funciona la corrupción política y el ritmo frenético de las noticias en España, esta es tu película. El lenguaje es rápido, afilado y muy actual.

     

7. La isla mínima (2014)

   • El porqué: Un thriller visualmente hipnótico ambientado en las marismas del Guadalquivir. Es clave para ver cómo el pasado de la Transición seguía proyectando sombras largas en los años 80.

     

8. Maixabel (2021)

   • El porqué: Una obra fundamental sobre el perdón y el conflicto vasco (ETA). Ofrece una perspectiva humana y necesaria sobre la reconciliación y el valor ético del diálogo.

   

9. Cinco lobitos (2022)

   • El porqué: El retrato más honesto y actual sobre la maternidad y el cuidado de los padres. Ideal para aprender vocabulario doméstico, emocional y entender las estructuras familiares hoy en día.

10. Celda 211 (2009)

• El porqué: Un hito del cine de acción español. Es fascinante para ver la jerga carcelaria y disfrutar de un duelo actoral que ya es parte de la cultura popular de España.

Si te interesa el cine, aquí tienes trabajo para rato. Te aseguro que cada una de ellas te dejará pensando (y probablemente con un par de expresiones nuevas en tu vocabulario).

Buen cine y feliz semana,

Ha pasado ya algún tiempo desde que me senté a escribir un insight cultural, pero siento que el inicio de año y la (probablemente bien llamada) cuesta de enero me han arrollado por completo. Ha sido un comienzo de año muy intenso, con muchos cambios y mucha incertidumbre, pero ya se empieza a ver la luz al final del túnel.

Uno de los motivos por los que esta cuesta de enero se siente “más cuesta” es por la crudeza del invierno. Ya sé que mucha gente dirá que el invierno es así, pero ¿qué queréis que os diga? Yo he nacido en el desierto y estas temperaturas me anulan por completo. No veo el momento de que vuelva el sol y unas temperaturas un poco más amigables para recuperar esa energía.

¿Y qué hay de tu invierno? ¿Cómo está siendo desde el lugar desde el que me lees? ¿Lo disfrutas o se te hace también cuesta arriba como a mí?

La curiosidad cultural

Febrero está a la vuelta de la esquina y eso significa una cosa en España y en muchas otras partes del mundo: Carnaval. En España hay dos carnavales que destacan por encima del resto y que son Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional: el Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife y el Carnaval de Cádiz. De este último es del que quiero hablar hoy aquí.

En Cádiz, todos los años se celebra durante los meses de enero y febrero el Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones Carnavalescas (COAC), un evento que define el ingenio español. Durante un mes, la ciudad se convierte en el altavoz de la crítica social a través de cuatro tipos de grupos:

• La Chirigota: Muy centrada en el humor. Su objetivo principal es hacerte reír. Los grupos suelen ser de 12 personas y usan un tono sarcástico. Este año la chirigota más mediática está siendo “Una chirigota en teoría”, donde desde el respeto (aunque algunas personas dicen que no) hacen humor basado en Stephen Hawking y tienen un tipo (un disfraz) muy conseguido. Aquí podéis verlo y sacar vuestras propias conclusiones:

• La Comparsa: Es la modalidad más seria y poética. Se centran en la crítica social y la belleza musical de sus voces. Y he de confesar que es mi modalidad favorita. Me pierden (me encantan) esas voces tan afinadas y esas letras tan críticas y con pellizco. Aquí podéis ver una de mis favoritas de los últimos años:

• El Coro: Son los grupos más grandes (hasta 45 personas). Cantan acompañados de laúdes y bandurrias y suelen ir en carrozas llamadas bateas. Su ritmo estrella es el tango. Un ejemplo de coro es el siguiente:

El Cuarteto: Aunque se llamen así, pueden ser 3, 4 o 5 personas. No suelen cantar tanto, sino que representan una parodia (una pequeña obra de teatro cómica) basada en el diálogo y la rima. Aquí un ejemplo de cuarteto:

Lo más fascinante es que no son solo canciones de fiesta. Los gaditanos (gentilicio de Cádiz) practican lo que llamamos "periodismo cantado". Usan la ironía y el sarcasmo para repasar la actualidad política y social del año. Para un estudiante de español, escuchar estas agrupaciones es un reto increíble: es donde el idioma se vuelve más creativo, lleno de dobles sentidos, juegos de palabras y, sobre todo, mucho corazón. Si quieres entender el alma de Andalucía y su capacidad para reírse de todo (hasta de los problemas), no puedes perderte este concurso. Eso sí, es muy difícil de entender y puede llevar mucho tiempo, pero es un reto que merece la pena.

Lo que he visto

Ayer por la noche vi la película tunecina La voz de Hind Rajab, una de las nominadas al Premio Óscar a la mejor película extranjera. La película es un jarro de agua fría que, honestamente, te deja sin palabras.

La trama: 29 de enero de 2024. Los voluntarios de la Media Luna Roja reciben una llamada de emergencia. Una niña de 6 años está atrapada en un coche bajo el fuego en Gaza, suplicando ser rescatada. Mientras intentan mantener el contacto telefónico con ella, hacen todo lo posible por enviarle una ambulancia. Su nombre: Hind Rajab.

No hace falta decir mucho más. Una película necesaria y que no debería dejar indiferente a nadie. La recomiendo encarecidamente. Es la mejor película que he visto en lo que va de año.

Una recomendación en clave de español

Durante las vacaciones de Navidad tuve la oportunidad de ver la serie Querer, de Alauda Ruiz de Azúa. Es una miniserie de cuatro episodios que aborda un tema complejo y valiente: una mujer que, tras 30 años de matrimonio, decide denunciar a su marido por violación continuada. Lo que me fascina de esta serie para aprender español es que el lenguaje no es rebuscado, sino crudo y real.

A través de los interrogatorios y las conversaciones familiares, puedes aprender mucho vocabulario relacionado con el ámbito judicial y, sobre todo, expresiones para expresar sentimientos y conflictos internos. Es una joya para ver cómo cambia el registro de los personajes según están en el salón de su casa o frente a un juez. Eso sí, preparad los pañuelos porque es una historia que te remueve por dentro y te invita a reflexionar mucho después de terminar el último capítulo.

Vocabulario útil

Sobre el invierno y el ánimo:

Cuesta de enero: Expresión que usamos para describir lo difícil que es económicamente (y emocionalmente) empezar el año tras los gastos de Navidad.

Hacerse cuesta arriba: Una metáfora perfecta para decir que algo nos resulta muy difícil o pesado. “Este lunes se me hace cuesta arriba”.

Anular a alguien: En este contexto, significa dejar a alguien sin fuerzas o sin capacidad de reaccionar.

Sobre el Carnaval de Cádiz:

Tipo: ¡Ojo! No es un “tipo de persona”. En Cádiz, es el nombre que se le da al disfraz y a la caracterización del personaje.

Pellizco: Literalmente es un “pinch” con los dedos, pero en el arte (flamenco o carnaval) es esa emoción intensa que te hace estremecer al escuchar una letra.

Dobles sentidos: Frases que pueden entenderse de dos maneras, normalmente una literal y otra irónica o pícara.

Batea: Es el nombre específico de la carroza o remolque sobre el que cantan los coros mientras se desplazan por la ciudad.

Expresiones generales y cine:

Jarro de agua fría: Una noticia o situación inesperada que te corta el ánimo o te deja en shock.

En lo que va de año: Expresión temporal para decir “desde que empezó el año hasta el momento actual”.

No dejar indiferente: Algo que provoca una reacción fuerte, ya sea buena o mala; algo que no puedes ignorar.

Encarecidamente: Un adverbio que usamos para recomendar algo con mucha insistencia y sinceridad.

Ya son varias Navidades las que vengo reflexionando sobre lo rápido que el mundo ha cambiado y lo sigue haciendo; de cómo da igual dónde viva y adónde viaje, las celebraciones navideñas son cada vez más parecidas.

Cuando era pequeño, para mí la Navidad era una época mágica: de reunirme con la familia, disfrutar con los amigos y, sobre todo, de ejercitar la paciencia. Significaba esperar esos regalos que tanto me ilusionaban y que no llegaban hasta el final de las vacaciones.

En España, al menos cuando yo era niño y adolescente, no sabíamos mucho sobre Papá Noel. Que sí, que era un viejo señor gordo vestido de rojo que traía regalos a los niños americanos en las películas y quizás en alguna parte más de Europa, pero poco más. Aquí, al menos en mi ciudad, Papá Noel o Santa Claus —como le empezaban a decir algunos modernos ya— ni pinchaba ni cortaba. La tarea de traer los regalos estaba bien definida y corría a cargo de los Reyes Magos.

Los Reyes Magos son tres: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar. Cada niño, normalmente, tenía a su favorito, al que le escribía la carta en el colegio o en casa con sus padres para pedirle lo que quería recibir ese año. Esa carta, además, se recortaba de revistas o te llegaba en el colegio y era bastante estándar. Era un momento de sentarte a reflexionar sobre tu comportamiento y de escribir qué regalos te harían feliz ese año.

En aquel entonces, éramos conscientes de que las cosas requerían tiempo y que, para recibir los regalos, los Reyes Magos tenían que realizar un largo viaje desde Oriente con sus camellos. Pero, al final, el ansiado día llegaba. Había jornadas aburridas, días donde el tiempo volaba y otros en los que se mezclaban ambas sensaciones; pero la espera siempre terminaba. Después de Nochevieja, las mariposas en el estómago empezaban a hacerse cada vez más fuertes, alcanzando su clímax la noche del 5 de enero, el día donde el mundo se detenía para iniciar el ritual de recibimiento.

Los niños vivíamos ese día con nerviosismo, esperando la gran fiesta: la cabalgata. Ese es el momento en que la fantasía se vuelve real; ver a los pajes, los camellos y las carrozas te hacía sentir que toda la espera había merecido la pena. Era la antesala mágica: recoger caramelos que volaban por los aires y, después, correr a casa a poner en orden los últimos preparativos. Había que dejar el árbol bien provisto de comida y bebida para Sus Majestades y sus camellos. Luego llegaba el sueño ligero, esa sensación de intentar quedarse despierto para escucharlos entrar, el miedo a que te vieran y pasaran de largo, y el silencio absoluto de la casa en la madrugada más larga del año para un niño ilusionado.

Por último, llegaba la mañana del 6 de enero. Los niños nos despertábamos excesivamente temprano a consecuencia del nerviosismo y corríamos al árbol de Navidad a comprobar que los Reyes Magos no se habían olvidado de nosotros. Cuando veíamos que todo estaba en orden, despertábamos al resto de la familia para iniciar el esperado ritual: abrir los regalos —o el carbón que te recordaba que los malos comportamientos tienen consecuencias—, alegrarse o decepcionarse, y terminar la mañana desayunando el tradicional roscón de Reyes. Una mañana dulce que desbloquea esa nostalgia de infancia donde la espera siempre tenía su recompensa.

Hoy, en un mundo de envíos en 24 horas y gratificación instantánea, me pregunto si no habremos perdido algo valioso por el camino. Aquella espera interminable hasta el 6 de enero no era un castigo, sino un aprendizaje; nos enseñaba que lo más importante no es el regalo que aparece bajo el árbol, sino la capacidad de desearlo y de entender que las cosas importantes requieren tiempo. Aquellos camellos tardaban semanas en llegar, pero su huella duraba todo el año. Al final, el recuerdo de ese sueño ligero en la madrugada más larga me sigue recordando que la verdadera magia solo aparece cuando somos capaces de esperarla.

• la cabalgata: es el desfile que se realiza para el día de reyes; en inglés parade o procession.

• los pajes: los ayudantes o sirvientes de los Reyes; en inglés page

• las carrozas: es un vehículo decorado dónde los Reyes Magos desfilan el día de la cabalgata; en inglés es float.

• la antesala: la antesala es una situación anterior a otra; en inglés precursor.

For several Christmases now, I’ve been reflecting on how quickly the world has changed and continues to do so; on how, no matter where I live or where I travel, Christmas celebrations are becoming increasingly similar.

When I was a child, Christmas was a magical time: a time to gather with family, enjoy friends, and, above all, to exercise patience. It meant waiting for those gifts I was so excited about, which wouldn’t arrive until the very end of the holidays.

In Spain, at least when I was a boy and a teenager, we didn’t know much about Santa Claus. Sure, he was a jolly old fat man in red who brought gifts to American children in the movies and perhaps in some other parts of Europe, but not much else. Here, at least in my city, Santa Claus—or Papá Noel, as some “modern” people were starting to call him—didn’t really play a part. The task of bringing gifts was well-defined and was the responsibility of the Reyes Magos (the Three Wise Men).

The Three Kings are three: Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar. Every child usually had their favorite, to whom they would write their letter at school or at home with their parents to ask for what they wanted that year. That letter was often clipped from magazines or handed out at school, and it was quite standard. It was a moment to sit down, reflect on your behavior, and write about the gifts that would make you happy that year.

Back then, we were aware that things took time and that, to deliver the gifts, the Kings had to make a long journey from the East with their camels. But eventually, the long-awaited day arrived. There were boring days, days where time flew, and others where both sensations mingled; but the wait always ended. After New Year’s Eve, the butterflies in our stomachs grew stronger, reaching their climax on the night of January 5th—the day the world stopped to begin the welcoming ritual.

As children, we lived that day with nervousness, waiting for the great feast: the Cabalgata (the parade). This is the moment when fantasy becomes real; seeing the pages, the camels, and the floats made you feel that the entire wait had been worth it. It was the magical prelude: catching candies flying through the air and then rushing home to put the final preparations in order. We had to leave the tree well-stocked with food and drink for Their Majesties and their camels. Then came the light sleep—that sensation of trying to stay awake to hear them enter, the fear that they might see you and pass by, and the absolute silence of the house during the longest dawn of the year for an excited child.

Finally, the morning of January 6th arrived. We children woke up excessively early due to nerves and ran to the Christmas tree to check that the Kings hadn’t forgotten us. When we saw that everything was in order, we woke the rest of the family to start the long-awaited ritual: opening the presents—or the “coal” that reminded you that bad behavior has consequences—feeling joy or disappointment, and ending the morning having the traditional Roscón de Reyes for breakfast. A sweet morning that unlocks that childhood nostalgia where waiting always had its reward.

Today, in a world of 24-hour shipping and instant gratification, I wonder if we haven’t lost something valuable along the way. That endless wait until January 6th wasn’t a punishment, but a lesson; it taught us that the most important thing is not the gift that appears under the tree, but the capacity to desire it and to understand that important things take time. Those camels took weeks to arrive, but their footprint lasted all year. In the end, the memory of that light sleep during the longest dawn continues to remind me that true magic only appears when we are capable of waiting for it.
