I’m not devaluing someone’s incremental victories or successes. I’m not mocking the small wins. I’m not suggesting people shouldn’t celebrate their progress. I’m not saying these things don’t matter at all. They do. They’re part of the ecosystem. They’re part of the hustle. They’re part of the reality of being a creator in 2026.

But what I’m noticing is that in many of these declarations, people seem to be confusing these metrics with improvement in photography. They treat the numbers as proof of evolution. They treat the attention as evidence of mastery. They treat the engagement as validation of growth. And while those things could be connected, they mostly aren’t. They’re different currencies entirely. They operate on different timelines. They measure different things. They reward different behaviors. And when you start confusing one for the other, you begin steering your creative life toward applause instead of artistry.

The problem isn’t that metrics exist. The problem is that metrics are loud and growth is quiet. Metrics shout. Growth whispers. Metrics refresh instantly. Growth takes years. And if you’re not careful, you start shaping your photography around what performs instead of what grows. You start chasing the numbers instead of the craft. And here’s the uncomfortable truth: the things that make you a better photographer are rarely the things that get you more likes. They happen in the unshared frames. They happen in the photos that never make it online. But none of those things are inherently connected to becoming a better photographer.

And if you’re not careful, you’ll start steering your creative life toward applause instead of evolution. You’ll start shaping your photography around what performs instead of what grows. You’ll start confusing visibility with mastery. You’ll start believing that attention is proof of improvement. You’ll start mistaking noise for signal.

So here’s the rant, distilled: celebrate your metrics, enjoy your wins, appreciate your audience, but don’t confuse any of it with becoming a better photographer. For most of my adult life, I’ve lived in two overlapping worlds: the world of photographers and the world of writers. I didn’t plan it that way. It just happened. I felt like someone had just handed me a tool that might help me stay focused on the part of the equation I love most—photography.

This is the part where some of my writer friends raise an eyebrow. They don’t say it out loud, but I can hear the subtext: “Real writers don’t use AI.” Or, “If you use AI, you’re not really writing.” Or, “AI is a shortcut, and shortcuts cheapen the work.” They don’t mean it harshly. So let’s talk, briefly, about what AI gets right and what it gets wrong.

AI gets clarity right. It gets structure right. It gets rhythm right. It gets coherence right. It helps me say what I’m already thinking without stumbling over the mechanics. It helps me refine the voice I already have rather than inventing one I don’t. It helps me stay focused on the ideas instead of the grammar. It helps me keep my attention on the camera instead of the keyboard. It helps me write the way I speak—direct, intentional, unpretentious.

AI gets nuance wrong. It gets emotional texture wrong. It gets lived experience wrong. It gets the subtle contradictions of being human wrong. It gets the messy parts wrong. It gets the parts that come from memory, history, and personal truth wrong. It can echo those things, but it can’t originate them. That’s my job. That’s the part only I can do. That’s the part no tool can replace.

When I sit down to write, I’m not outsourcing my voice. I’m amplifying it. I’m not delegating my ideas. I’m shaping them. I’m not handing over the steering wheel. I’m asking for help with the map. It helps me show up more fully as a photographer who also writes, not a writer who occasionally takes pictures.

Some people will never understand that. Some people will insist that writing must remain untouched, unassisted, unaugmented. Some people will cling to the idea that purity is the only marker of authenticity. Some people will argue that using AI is a kind of creative betrayal. I’m not here to convince them otherwise. I’m not here to debate purity. I’m not here to defend my choices. I’m here to make work. I’m here to create. I’m here to photograph. I’m here to write in service of the images I make.

If AI helps me do that more clearly, more efficiently, more consistently, then I’m going to use it. Proudly. Unapologetically. Unashamedly. Not because it replaces me, but because it supports me. Not because it writes for me, but because it writes with me. Not because it gives me a voice, but because it helps me refine the one I already have.

My writer friends may never adopt these tools. They may never feel comfortable with them. They may never see them as anything other than a threat. That’s fine. They’re writers. Writing is their craft. Writing is their identity. Writing is their oxygen. They should protect it. They should defend it. They should honor it.

But I’m a photographer. My camera is my oxygen. My images are my identity. My work is built on light, not language. And if a writing tool helps me stay closer to the thing I love most, I’m going to embrace it. I’m going to lean into it. I’m going to use it without apology.

Because at the end of the day, the work is what matters. The intention is what matters. The honesty is what matters. The clarity is what matters. The voice is what matters. And the camera—the thing I’ve carried for fifty years—is still in my hands. AI didn’t take it away. It helped me keep it there.

A few months ago, I was road-tripping through West Texas and spent a couple of days wandering around Marfa. I had no particular agenda beyond the usual one. Drive around. Walk around. Bike around. Look at things. Take pictures. Eat something decent. Maybe have a drink at the end of the day. Then get up the next morning and do it all over again. Marfa is the kind of place where you can do that without feeling like you’re wasting time. In fact, wasting time may be one of the very best things to do there.

Somewhat serendipitously, I kept running into the same two women. I saw them once while I was walking around town, then again at a restaurant, and later that evening at a bar. By the third encounter, it seemed ridiculous not to introduce ourselves. They were probably in their late fifties or early sixties, although I’m terrible at guessing ages. Both were nicely dressed and nicely groomed, but there was something wonderfully free-form about them. They had just enough of the 1960s hanging around the edges to make me think that somewhere, buried deep in a closet back home, there might still be a tie-dyed shirt or two.

We started talking. They were funny, smart, curious, and easy to talk to. One lived in California, if I remember correctly, and the other somewhere in the Southwest. They had met years earlier and periodically traveled together. This particular trip, they explained, was part vacation and part spiritual pilgrimage. That, of course, got my attention.

They were meeting a small group later that evening for what they described as a portal gathering. I can’t remember the exact language they used, but the basic idea was that the group would come together in a spiritually intentional space, meditate, quiet themselves, become open to whatever energy or guidance might be present, and simply see what happened. Marfa and the surrounding desert, they told me, carried a certain kind of energy. Some places in the world apparently did. If you became quiet enough and receptive enough, they believed you could sometimes feel it.

I had heard this kind of language before. I have several dear friends who swim in these waters, so none of it was particularly shocking or even unfamiliar. I wasn’t unsympathetic, either. Skeptical, absolutely. But curious. And probably because I am curious by nature, I asked questions instead of rolling my eyes.

Then they invited me to come.

Actually, invited is probably too weak a word. They practically begged me to join them. My first instinct was to politely decline. This was not exactly how I had imagined spending my evening in Marfa. A cold beer and an early night sounded considerably more attractive than opening myself to the energetic vibrations of the West Texas desert. The tears were real. The emotions were real. The memories were real. These women weren’t actors performing for an audience. Something was clearly happening inside them, and I don’t dismiss that for a second.

But I also knew I was done.

I waited quietly for what seemed like an appropriate moment, thanked the woman leading the group, and politely excused myself. Nobody seemed offended. Nobody chased me down the driveway trying to realign my chakras. I got into my car and drove back into town, somewhat amused by the whole thing but also genuinely curious about what I had just witnessed.

Electric was one of the words they used. They talked about the energy in the room and the emotional release they had witnessed. The air was relatively cool, the streets were almost empty, and the light was soft and delicate as it slowly began to spread itself across the desert and the buildings around me. There was hardly any wind. Hardly any sound. Marfa felt completely different from the town I had been walking through the day before.

The night before, I had sat in a candlelit room with a group of perfectly lovely people waiting for something to happen. I had closed my eyes, breathed deeply, listened respectfully, and tried sincerely to remain open to the experience. Nothing much happened to me.

But here I was, twelve hours later, walking alone through the quiet streets of Marfa with a camera in my hand, feeling almost everything my two new friends had described.

The difference, of course, was in how I explained it.

I didn’t believe the West Texas desert had opened some invisible doorway for me. I didn’t think another dimension was communicating through the morning light. I didn’t believe the universe had arranged these scenes specifically for me or that some external spiritual energy had entered my body.

I thought I was simply paying attention.

But the more I walked that morning, the more I wondered whether that was what my friends had been doing too.

I’ve thought about those two women many times since then. I’ve thought about how easy it would be for me to dismiss their experience simply because I don’t share the language they use to explain it. I don’t believe in portals in the way they do. I don’t believe certain places contain invisible doorways into other dimensions, or that spiritual energy flows through particular patches of earth.

But I do believe in the experience of being completely present.

I know what that feels like.

I believe in those rare moments when the ordinary world suddenly becomes extraordinary, not necessarily because the world has changed, but because we have. We have slowed down enough to notice it. We have quieted ourselves enough to receive it. We have stepped outside the relentless chatter of ordinary life long enough to actually see where we are.

Maybe my two friends needed candles, meditation, ambient music, and a room filled with people searching for something. Maybe I needed sunrise, soft light, empty streets, and a camera in my hand. Maybe they called it energy, and I called it seeing.

I’m still skeptical about what we do with these experiences afterward. I think we need to be careful about confusing the experience itself with the explanation we attach to it. Goosebumps are real. Tears are real. Awe is real. A sense of connection is real. But none of those things, by themselves, prove that our interpretation of them is true.

My friends experienced something powerful that night.

So did I the next morning.

They interpreted their experience through a spiritual framework. I interpreted mine through fifty-one years of photography. And perhaps neither experience needs to diminish the other.

I still don’t believe in portals, at least not the kind that supposedly connect us to invisible dimensions or unseen worlds. But I’m beginning to understand the attraction.

Because if a portal is simply something that takes you out of the noise, slows you down, opens you up, and makes you feel intensely connected to the moment you’re standing in, then maybe I’ve been walking through one for most of my life.

Mine just happens to have a lens.

For most of my career, the photography world was built on a single, unspoken hierarchy. At the top were the traditional photographers — the big‑camera people, the dedicated‑gear people, the ones who carried two bodies and three lenses and a bag full of batteries. They validated themselves through the genres they mastered. Portrait photography. Fashion photography. Lifestyle photography. Food photography. Nature photography. Macro photography. Event photography. The genre was the badge. The genre was the proof. The genre was the identity.

If you wanted respect in that world, you didn’t just take good photos. You took good photos within a category. You shot portraits that looked like portraits. You shot landscapes that looked like landscapes. You shot food that looked like food. You shot macro that looked like macro. You stayed inside the lanes because the lanes were how the craft defined itself. The lanes were how you were judged. The lanes were how you were validated.

Traditional photographers validated themselves through other photographers. Their work was aimed at peers, not at people. They wanted the nod from someone who knew the rules. They wanted the approval of someone who understood the genre. They wanted the respect of someone who could say, “Yes, that is a proper portrait,” or “Yes, that is a proper landscape,” or “Yes, that is a proper macro shot.”

And because of that, traditional photographers tended to photograph predictable subject matter. Not because they lacked imagination, but because predictable subjects were the ones that fit neatly into the genre boxes they were taught. A portrait photographer photographed people. A landscape photographer photographed mountains. A food photographer photographed plates. A macro photographer photographed insects. The genre dictated the subject. The subject dictated the validation. The validation dictated the identity.'

Then the iPhone arrived and flipped the entire model upside down.

The iPhone snapper — the casual photographer, the everyday photographer, the person who never thought of themselves as a photographer at all — didn’t care about genres. They didn’t care about categories. They didn’t care about the invisible fences. They didn’t care about the rules. They didn’t care about the hierarchy. They didn’t care about the nod from a traditional photographer.

They cared about their lives.

They cared about their kids. Their dogs. Their gardens. Their dinners. Their sunsets. Their vacations. Their weekends. Their homes. Their hobbies. Their friendships. Their milestones. Their traditions. Their memories. Their moments.

They weren’t trying to create art. They were trying to create artful moments. They weren’t trying to impress other photographers. They were trying not to embarrass themselves. They weren’t trying to master genres. They were trying to preserve their lives. They weren’t trying to follow rules. They were trying to follow feelings.

And this is the part that traditional photographers never fully understood: iPhone photographers validate themselves through emotion, not through genre. They validate themselves through the reaction of the people in the photo, not through the reaction of other photographers. They validate themselves through the feeling the image gives them, not through the technical correctness of the image.

A traditional photographer wants another photographer to say, “Beautiful portrait.” An iPhone photographer wants their daughter to say, “I love that picture of me.”

A traditional photographer wants someone to admire the composition. An iPhone photographer wants someone to remember the moment.

A traditional photographer wants to be respected. An iPhone photographer wants to be connected.

A traditional photographer wants to be good. An iPhone photographer wants to be honest.

And here’s the deeper truth: the iPhone didn’t just democratize photography. It democratized validation. It made photography less about impressing the craft and more about expressing life. It made photography less about categories and more about humanity. It made photography less about rules and more about meaning.

Traditional photographers shoot genres. iPhone photographers shoot existence.

Traditional photographers chase perfection. iPhone photographers chase memory.

Traditional photographers seek approval from the craft. iPhone photographers seek approval from the people they love.

Traditional photographers photograph predictable subjects because that’s what the genre demands. iPhone photographers photograph unpredictable subjects because that’s what life demands.

The two tribes aren’t enemies. They’re just different. They’re built on different values, different desires, different fears, different hopes. One is built on mastery. The other is built on meaning. One is built on categories. The other is built on connection. One is built on tradition. The other is built on immediacy.

And the iPhone snapper — the everyday photographer — is not trying to replace the traditional photographer. They’re not trying to compete. They’re not trying to win. They’re not trying to be experts. They’re trying to be rememberers. They’re trying to be storytellers. They’re trying to be archivists of their own lives.

They’re trying to make sure the moments that matter don’t slip away.

And that’s why the iPhone changed everything. It didn’t just change the camera. It changed the purpose of the camera. It changed the audience. It changed the validation. It changed the identity. It changed the culture.

Maybe someday, when my knees finally give out, and my back decides it has had enough of my nonsense, I’ll spend more time editing than shooting. Maybe someday I’ll sit in a dark room with a big screen, a calibrated monitor, a stylus, and a cup of tea, gently massaging pixels into submission. Maybe someday I’ll become one of those people who can sit for hours, lost in the glow of a Mac, adjusting curves and masks and color channels like a surgeon. Maybe someday I’ll become a tapper.

But until that day comes… click, click, click.

I’m a hunter, not a farmer. A snapper, not a tapper. I prefer to be in the world, moving, looking, reacting, responding, chasing light, chasing moments, chasing the feeling of being alive with a camera in my hand. I prefer the wind, the noise, the unpredictability, the chaos, the immediacy. I prefer the world over the screen. I prefer the moment over the edit. I prefer the click over the correction.

And I’ll be honest: I’m a little jealous of the people who can sit for hours in a dark room and edit on their Macs and iPads. I watch them sometimes — the Lightroom monks, the Photoshop priests, the DaVinci colorists — and I marvel at their patience. Their stillness. Their ability to sit in one place and sculpt an image like a potter shaping clay. I admire it. I respect it. I envy it.

But that isn’t me. I’m not wired like that.

The biggest thrill in my iPhone photography — the thing that keeps me coming back, the thing that keeps me walking, looking, noticing, shooting — is the thrill of capture. The moment when the world arranges itself, and I’m there to receive it. The moment when the light hits just right. The moment when the geometry clicks. The moment when the scene reveals itself. The moment when the photograph happens.

Everything else is secondary.

Editing is refinement. Editing is polish. Editing is seasoning. Editing is the final touch. Editing is the afterthought. Editing is the dessert. But the capture — the moment — that’s the meal. That’s the reason I’m here. That’s the reason I shoot. That’s the reason I carry a camera everywhere. That’s the reason I walk through the world with my eyes open.

I want to know what a photograph — any photograph — looks like when framed and lit by me. I want to know what the world looks like through my seeing, not my sliders. I want to know what the moment looks like when I respond to it, not when I correct it. I want to know what the world looks like when I’m paying attention.

The people who attend my workshops and go on my field trips hardly ever come to learn my editing secrets. I have none. There is no magic slider. There is no secret LUT. There is no preset that transforms the world. There is no hidden technique. There is no mystical workflow. There is no editing gospel.

They come to learn how I see. They come to learn how I feel. They come to learn how I shoot.

They come to learn how to be in the world with a camera, not how to sit in a room with a screen.

And this is where I get a little blunt — not rude, just honest. I see a staggering number of YouTubers and influencers going on and on and on about their editing secrets, hacks, LUTs, presets, workflows, color grades, and magical techniques. They talk about editing like it’s the entire craft. They talk about editing like it’s the point. They talk about editing like it’s the soul of photography.

And then you look at their photos and… they’re pretty meh.

Go figure.

It’s almost funny. The more time someone spends talking about editing, the less interesting their photographs tend to be. Not always. Not universally. But often enough to notice. Often enough to wonder. Often enough to raise an eyebrow. Often enough to ask the obvious question: if the photograph isn’t compelling, what exactly are you editing?

Hmmmmm.

My advice — and I say this with love, with experience, with humility, and with the full weight of fifty years behind a camera — is simple: while you are learning iPhone photography, spend your days and nights learning to see. Learn to see in the field. Learn to see in the wild. Learn to see through capture. Learn to see through presence. Learn to see through attention. Learn to see through the act of being in the world.

Then, if and when you have some free time, invest in the editing process. Learn the tools. Learn the techniques. Learn the refinements. Learn the polish. Learn the craft of finishing.

But prioritize shooting over editing.

Prioritize the world over the screen. Prioritize the moment over the mask. Prioritize the light over the LUT. Prioritize the seeing over the sliders.

Because editing can make a photograph better. But only seeing can make a photograph worth editing.

“Every September, Apple unveils a new camera. This year, they may unveil a new idea.”

I know, for a fact, that many of you don’t follow Apple launches the way I do. Most people learn about new iPhones casually—an article here, a YouTube video there—often months after the devices have already shipped. But because this is my niche, my interest, and my specialty, I follow these launches closely and critically. I watch the rumors, the supply‑chain leaks, the analyst notes, the CAD drawings, the whispers from case manufacturers. I watch the patterns. And this year, the pattern is shifting.

We are now only weeks away from the iPhone 18 series. And although I have no secret pipeline into Cupertino, my intuition—and the rhythm of Apple’s camera development—tells me that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max cameras will be evolutionary, not revolutionary. All things being equal, I expect the 18 series to build on the 17 series rather than leap past it.

That means familiar territory: a refined forty‑eight‑megapixel main sensor, likely with improved thermal behavior; better noise handling; smarter fusion algorithms; and the usual annual gains in battery life, sensor optimization, and processing speed. I also expect Apple to push the telephoto lens forward—variable aperture is the most credible rumor, and it fits Apple’s long‑term trajectory toward more flexible optics. A variable aperture telephoto would give photographers better control in mixed lighting, more stability at higher zoom levels, and more consistency across the zoom range.

There are also smaller but meaningful upgrades that matter to photographer types: improved lens coatings for flare control, better corner sharpness on the ultrawide, and more intelligent computational blending between the one‑times and two‑times ranges. These are the kinds of refinements that don’t headline a keynote but absolutely show up in your photos.

But the hero of the launch—the thing Apple wants you to remember—won’t be the Pro Max. It will be the foldable.

Yes, you heard me right. Apple will likely introduce its first foldable phone, referred to in leaks as the iPhone Ultra. And if the leaks are even half‑accurate, this device will be the emotional center of the keynote.

A foldable phone, in brief, is a device that opens like a book. Closed, it behaves like a normal smartphone. Open, it becomes a small tablet. Samsung has been refining this category for years, and Apple appears to be responding directly to the design language established by the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The wider passport‑style outer display, the book‑like inner screen, the emphasis on durability and hinge stability—these are the cues Apple seems ready to adopt and reinterpret through its own design philosophy.

Apple’s version, if the leaks are correct, will follow the same general blueprint but with Apple’s usual obsession with materials, hinge engineering, and software polish. The outer screen will be compact, designed for quick interactions. The inner screen will be large enough to edit photos comfortably, especially with Apple Pencil support. That alone changes the workflow: shoot on the main camera, open the device, edit on a tablet‑sized display, publish immediately.

But here’s the catch. The iPhone Ultra will only have two lenses: the main twenty‑four millimeter one‑times lens and the thirteen millimeter ultra‑wide at zero‑point‑five. No telephoto. No four‑times. No eight‑times. No long‑reach compression. No portrait‑distance clarity. It’s a wide‑angle storyteller, not a full‑range camera system.

And that brings me to the dilemma.

I’ve purchased the Pro Max model every year since the iPhone 11. It has been my main camera, my daily shooter, my long‑lens tool. Now I have to choose between the three‑camera array of the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone Ultra with no telephoto at all.

The Ultra will have a hefty price tag. Foldables always do. And Apple’s first attempt will not be cheap. It will not be two thousand dollars. It will be more. Apple’s first entry into any new category always carries a premium, and a foldable—especially one built to Apple’s durability standards—will reflect both engineering and ambition.

Before I close, there are a few additional realities worth highlighting, especially for photographers who are weighing the Ultra against the Pro Max.

The foldable will be a different physical experience in the hand. It will be slightly wider than a regular iPhone and noticeably shorter, almost the same footprint as a passport. That shape changes how it sits in your palm, how it slips into a jacket pocket, how it feels when you’re shooting one‑handed. It’s not a small detail. It’s a new geometry, and geometry always affects photography.

And while the Ultra won’t have a telephoto lens, you won’t lose telephoto reach entirely. Third‑party manufacturers will absolutely produce two‑times and three‑times conversion lenses that mount over the main camera. They won’t replace the optical purity of a native telephoto, but they will give you reach, compression, and portrait‑distance framing when you need it. In other words, the Ultra won’t leave you stranded. It will simply require a different toolkit.

When the device is open, the full inner display will give you a roughly four‑by‑three aspect ratio. That shape is generous. It feels like a workspace. And it makes editing feel less like a chore and more like a craft. The ability to use an Apple Pencil on that surface is not a gimmick. It’s a workflow shift. It’s the difference between tapping sliders and actually drawing your edits. It’s the difference between adjusting and shaping.

And there’s something else. In the wide‑screen mode, you’ll be able to run two apps side by side. That means reference photos next to edits. Notes next to Lightroom. A browser next to your camera roll. It’s the kind of multitasking photographers have wanted for years but never had in a pocketable device.

So the decision becomes clearer.

If you want the most complete camera system Apple offers, the Pro Max remains the obvious choice. It gives you reach, flexibility, and the familiar rhythm of a three‑lens workflow.

But if you want a new way of working—a new surface, a new shape, a new editing experience, a new kind of photographic day—then the Ultra may be the device that changes how you think about mobile photography altogether.

The Pro Max will be the better camera.

The Ultra may be the better idea.

And that’s the fold in the road.

If there’s one theme I’ve seen over and over again in photography—across classrooms, workshops, critiques, conferences, and casual conversations—it’s that photographers are hopelessly, hilariously, stubbornly attached to the backstory of a photograph. And I don’t mean a little attached. I mean white‑knuckle, death‑grip, let‑me‑tell‑you‑every‑detail‑whether‑you‑asked‑or‑not attached. Photographers, of all people, should know better. But they don’t.

I’ve listened to so many go on at length about how long it took to get the shot, how complicated it was, how rare the conditions were, how specialized the technique was, how expensive the gear was, how much preparation went into it, how many times they failed before they succeeded, how many mosquitoes were involved, how many near‑death experiences were narrowly avoided, and how the universe itself seemed to conspire against them until—finally, triumphantly—they captured the image. It’s like listening to someone describe the making of a sandwich as if it were a moon landing.

And the funniest part? They think this makes the photograph better. They think the suffering is part of the art. They think the viewer will care. They think the viewer should care.

Spoiler: the viewer does not care.

What the Viewer Actually Sees

Here’s the truth: most people looking at your photograph don’t care about your backstory. Certainly not the way you do. I’m not saying the backstory isn’t important. It is. It’s meaningful. It’s personal. It’s part of the craft. But it’s usually far more important to the photographer who lived it than to the viewer who’s simply trying to experience the image.

The viewer sees the front story. The photographer clings to the back story.

And those two stories are not equal.

The front story is the photograph itself—the thing the viewer actually sees. The composition, the light, the moment, the emotion, the impact. It’s the story the viewer receives.

The back story is everything that happened before the shutter clicked—the planning, the gear, the technique, the struggle, the drama, the “you won’t believe what I went through to get this shot” saga. It’s the story the photographer tells.

The problem is that photographers often confuse the two. They think the backstory adds value to the front story. Sometimes it does. But often it doesn’t. Sometimes the backstory is just noise. Sometimes it’s a distraction. Sometimes it’s a way of saying, “Please admire how hard I worked,” instead of, “Please experience what I made.”

The Recipe Is Not the Meal

I’ve been in dozens of classroom situations where photographers talk about their work like the backstory is more important than the front story. And that’s like saying the recipe matters more than the meal, or the workout matters more than the touchdown, or the rehearsal matters more than the performance. It’s like insisting that the labor is more important than the baby.

The viewer doesn’t care how hard you worked. The viewer cares how the photograph feels.

This is the part photographers struggle with. They want credit for the effort. They want acknowledgment for the suffering. They want applause for the technique. They want admiration for the preparation.

But the viewer owes them nothing.

The viewer owes them only one thing: attention. And that attention is earned by the front story, not the back story.

Why Photographers Love the Back Story

So why do photographers cling to the back story? Why do they treat it like the main event?

Because the back story is where they lived. It’s where they struggled. It’s where they triumphed. It’s where they felt something.

The backstory is the photographer’s emotional attachment. The front story is the viewer’s emotional experience.

These are not the same thing.

The photographer remembers the hike, the weather, the gear, the technique, the frustration, the waiting, the moment of luck, the moment of clarity, the moment of relief. The viewer sees none of that. The viewer sees only the result.

This is why photographers often overvalue the backstory. It’s their memory. It’s their sweat. It’s their journey. It’s their proof of effort. It’s their badge of honor.

But the viewer doesn’t care about your badge. The viewer cares about your photograph.

When the Back Story Becomes a Crutch

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: if your photograph needs its back story to be interesting, then your photograph isn’t interesting enough on its own.

A strong front story stands alone. It doesn’t need a TED Talk. It doesn’t need a heroic monologue. It doesn’t need a gear list, a weather report, or a tale of personal suffering.

A strong front story works.

This is where photographers get into trouble. They lean on the back story because the front story isn’t strong enough. They use the back story as a crutch. They use it as a distraction. They use it to inflate the image's importance.

But the photograph is the photograph. Everything else is commentary.

The Back Story Is for You

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love a good back story. I’ve lived plenty of them. I’ve shot in conditions that would make a Boy Scout cry. I’ve carried gear through airports, jungles, deserts, and cities. I’ve waited hours for light that never came. I’ve been rained on, snowed on, sandblasted, sunburned, wind‑whipped, and occasionally emotionally compromised. I’ve earned my backstories.

But here’s the thing: the viewer doesn’t owe me anything for that.

The viewer doesn’t owe me admiration for my suffering. The viewer doesn’t owe me respect for my effort. The viewer doesn’t owe me appreciation for my technique. The viewer doesn’t owe me applause for my preparation.

The viewer owes me nothing.

My job is to make a photograph that stands on its own. My job is to make a front story that doesn’t need a back story to survive.

Photography Is a Front‑Facing Medium

When photographers forget this—when they cling to the back story like it’s the photograph itself—they miss the point of the medium. Photography is not a diary of effort. It’s a record of perception. It’s not a memoir of struggle. It’s a moment of clarity. It’s not a behind‑the‑scenes documentary. It’s a front‑and‑center experience.

The backstory is for the photographer. The front story is for the viewer.

And if you want to be a better photographer—if you want to make work that resonates, that connects, that lands—then you have to stop confusing the two.

Make the front story strong. Make the front story clear. Make the front story compelling. Make the front story worth looking at.

And then, if someone asks for the back story, tell it. But don’t lead with it. Don’t rely on it. Don’t hide behind it. Don’t mistake it for the work.

The Photograph Is the Photograph

They shoot frame after frame of experimental work using every app they can find. They layer filters, distortions, textures, overlays, and effects. They push the image until it becomes something else entirely. They are everywhere. They are loud. They are enthusiastic. They are constantly experimenting. And there is nothing wrong with that. Experimentation is part of art. But it can make you feel like your quieter, more photographic approach is somehow less creative or less modern.

Do not get confused by experimentation and intent. They are not the same thing. You can experiment too, but you can experiment inside a photographic approach. You can experiment with better exposure. You can experiment with better focus. You can experiment with better subject matter. You can experiment with better natural color balance. You can experiment with better light. You can experiment with better design. You can experiment with timing, framing, composition, and patience. You can experiment with the way you move through the world. You can experiment with the way you see. Experimentation does not require apps. Experimentation does not require filters. Experimentation does not require distortion. Experimentation can be quiet, subtle, and deeply photographic.

I want to be clear about something. I support those out there who take a wildly different path than I do in iPhone photography. Good on them. Go for it. Have fun. Make whatever you want to make. Photography is big enough for all of us. There is room for every style, every approach, every instinct. There is room for the experimental and the traditional. There is room for the abstract and the documentary. There is room for the heavily edited and the barely edited. There is room for the people who want to push the boundaries of what an iPhone can do and the people who want to honor the simplicity of what an iPhone already does well.

But I am not writing to them. I am writing to you. I am writing to the ones who want their iPhone photographs to look like photographs. There’s a therapeutic quality to gratitude that I didn’t fully understand until later in life. When you’re young, gratitude feels like a polite reflex — something you’re taught to express, something you perform because it’s expected. But as you age, gratitude becomes something else entirely. I am grateful for my life — the good and the bad, the ups and the downs, the haves and the have‑nots. I’ve lived an enviable life by any reasonable measure, and I’m deeply grateful for all of it. The Foundation I Was Given

I was born into a life that gave me more than I realized at the time. I had loving, giving, caring parents — the kind of parents who showed up, who paid attention, who believed in me even when I made it difficult. I had teachers who adored me even when I acted up, teachers who saw potential where I saw boredom, teachers who nudged me toward curiosity instead of punishment. I had siblings I admired and loved being around, siblings who shaped my sense of humor, my competitiveness, my loyalty, and my understanding of what it means to belong to something larger than yourself. I had neighborhood friends who filled my childhood with the kind of simple, unstructured joy that doesn’t exist anymore — the kind of joy that comes from bikes, backyards, and the freedom to roam until the streetlights came on.

I grew up in Reading, Massachusetts, a place that felt, at times, more Norman Rockwell than real life. It was safe, predictable, and comforting in a way that only small New England towns can be. And then there was Cape Cod — our second home, our summer sanctuary, the place where my childhood expanded into something bigger and more magical. Cape Cod wasn’t just a location; it was a season of life, a rhythm, a feeling. It was salt air, sand, sunburns, and the sense that the world was wide open.

These were the foundations of my life — the early blessings that shaped my worldview long before I had the language to describe them. Gratitude didn’t come naturally then, but it comes naturally now when I look back and realize how much of who I am was formed in those early years.

The Life I Built

As I moved into adulthood, the blessings didn’t stop. I had opportunities galore — educational, professional, and personal. I had the money and the motivation to pursue two master’s degrees — one in Theology and one in Instructional Design — after completing my undergraduate work at Bible college, where I first learned how to think, read, and write with intention. Those years shaped my intellectual backbone. They taught me how to question, how to interpret, how to wrestle with ideas larger than myself.

Later, I found myself equally grateful for my journey into secular humanism — a different lens, a different vocabulary, a different way of understanding the world. It didn’t replace my theological roots; it expanded them. It gave me a broader framework for meaning, morality, and the human experience.

I had mentors who taught me the ropes, who invested in me, who opened doors I didn’t even know existed. I had homes and cars and assets — the material comforts that make life easier but don’t define it.

I had two marriages across different chapters of my life, and I’m grateful for both in the ways they shaped me. My first marriage brought lessons I needed, and that’s all that needs to be said about it. It was part of my growth, part of my story, and part of the long arc of becoming who I am now.

And then there is Shannon — my second marriage, and the one true love of my life. Even though we eventually divorced, she remains the person who changed me the most, challenged me the most, and loved me in a way that left a permanent mark. What we had was real, deep, and rare. Gratitude doesn’t even begin to cover what she means to me. She is not a chapter; she is the book.

I had two of the best daughters a man could ever hope for — daughters who became the emotional center of my life, the anchor points that kept me steady through every transition. Dallas and Austin — the cities where they were born and raised — hold a permanent place in my heart because of that.

And now, as life continues to unfold, I’m deeply grateful for the new partners who have joined our family — Michael, Tom, and Sam — loving companions to Shannon, Emma, and Audrey. They are good men, steady men, kind men. They’ve expanded our circle, not complicated it. We are, in every sense, a modern family, and I’m grateful for the way love keeps finding its way into our lives in new forms.

And then there was photography — the career that became my identity, my passport, my education, and my livelihood. Around the same time, stereoscopic photography became wildly popular. Then came George Eastman. In 1885, he introduced the first roll film. In 1888, he launched the Kodak No. 1 camera, preloaded with a hundred exposures. The Ur‑Leica was not released to the public until the mid‑1920s, but its impact was immediate. It introduced a new way of seeing—quick, candid, intuitive. Barnack didn’t just invent a camera. He invented a format that changed how the world would be photographed.

The Rise of 35mm Film Stocks

As the Leica gained popularity, film manufacturers began producing dedicated 35mm still-camera film. By the 1930s, companies like Kodak, Agfa, and Ilford were releasing increasingly sophisticated emulsions—faster, finer-grained, more versatile. Kodak’s Tri‑X, introduced in 1954, became legendary. With its high speed and distinctive grain, Tri‑X allowed photographers to work in low light, capture movement, and shoot handheld in situations where earlier films would have failed. It became the film of choice for photojournalists, street photographers, and documentarians. The look of twentieth‑century photography—raw, immediate, alive—was shaped by 35mm film. Color followed. Documenting America: The FSA Photographers

During the Great Depression, the U.S. government hired photographers through the Farm Security Administration to document American life. Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, Arthur Rothstein, and Marion Post Wolcott created some of the most enduring images in American history. Their work shaped the nation’s understanding of poverty, resilience, and the American experience.

Ansel Adams and the American Sublime

And then there was Ansel Adams. If Cartier-Bresson revealed the soul of the Leica, Adams revealed the soul of the American landscape. His Zone System formalized the relationship between exposure and development, but his genius was not technical—it was spiritual. He saw the land not as scenery but as revelation. The mid-twentieth century also produced some of the greatest commercial portraitists the medium has ever known. Richard Avedon redefined the modern portrait with his stark, confrontational style. Irving Penn brought elegance, restraint, and sculptural clarity to fashion and portraiture. Yousuf Karsh created some of the most recognizable portraits of the twentieth century, capturing statesmen, artists, and cultural icons with a sense of dignity and gravitas. Their work shaped the visual language of celebrity, fashion, and public identity.

Instant Gratification

In 1948, Edwin Land introduced the first Polaroid instant camera. For the first time, you could take a picture and hold it minutes later. It was chemistry, magic, and innovation rolled into one. Instant photography became a cultural phenomenon.

The Disposable Era

In the 1980s, Fujifilm introduced the first widely successful disposable camera, soon followed by Kodak. Cheap, simple, and carefree, they were perfect for beaches, parties, travel, and weddings. Disposable cameras democratized photography again—low pressure, low cost, high spontaneity. They were the spiritual ancestors of smartphone photography.

The iPhone was not just a phone. It was a camera, a computer, a communication device, and a creative tool fused into one. Jobs understood that the future of photography was not only about optics—it was about accessibility, immediacy, and the merging of image-making with everyday life. The iPhone placed a capable camera into the hands of millions, then billions, and wrapped it in software that could process, enhance, and share images instantly. It was the moment photography became universal.

Where We Are Now

Today, photography is optical, digital, computational, mobile, social, and ubiquitous. We have gone from darkened rooms in ancient China to billions of images uploaded daily. From hours-long exposures to instant sharing. From chemistry to algorithms. From heavy gear to pocket devices. And yet, through all of it, the core remains unchanged. Photography is still light writing. Still curious. Still, the desire to see more clearly. Still, the human impulse to preserve what matters.

Creativity doesn’t replace technical mastery; it grows out of it.

There’s no getting around this. As much as I would love to tell you that you can dive straight into the creative part of iPhone photography without ever having to learn the technical, it simply doesn’t work that way. I wish it did. I wish photography were pure instinct, pure emotion, pure expression. I wish you could skip the mechanics entirely and go straight to the magic. But photography has never worked like that, and it never will. Creativity, more often than not, grows out of technical mastery. When the technical becomes automatic, reflexive, second nature, it frees your mind to focus on the creative work—the real reason you picked up a camera in the first place.

The Myth of Pure Creativity

There’s a romantic idea floating around in the photography world that creativity is something spontaneous, effortless, and unburdened by mechanics. It’s the myth of the natural artist—the person who simply “sees differently,” who doesn’t need to understand exposure or focus or shutter speed because their creativity is so powerful it overrides the technical. The iPhone is an extraordinary camera, but it still has a mind of its own. It makes decisions. It interprets scenes. It guesses what you want. And sometimes it guesses wrong. If you don’t understand what the camera is doing, you can’t correct it. You can’t override it. You can’t shape the image the way you want. You’re at the mercy of the machine.

Technical mastery is not about memorizing settings. It’s about understanding behavior. It’s about knowing how the camera sees light, how it handles motion, how it chooses focus, and how it processes color. When you understand these things, you stop fighting the camera. You start collaborating with it. And collaboration is where creativity begins.

The Moment Moves Too Fast for Hesitation

Photography is a timing art. Moments appear and disappear in fractions of a second. Light changes. People move. Expressions shift. The world doesn’t wait for you to figure out your settings. But because the moment moves too fast for hesitation. When the technical becomes automatic, you can respond to the moment instead of reacting to the camera. You can anticipate instead of adjust. The Brain Can’t Do Two Things at Once

There’s a cognitive reason for all of this. The brain doesn’t multitask. It switches. And switching has a cost. When you’re shooting, you’re in a perceptual mode—intuitive, responsive, open. When you’re adjusting settings, you’re in an analytical mode—evaluative, structured, deliberate. These two modes don’t play well together. They interrupt each other. They compete for attention.

This is why I teach my students to separate shooting from editing. Shoot now, edit later. Don’t try to do both at once. Don’t try to be intuitive and analytical at the same time. Don’t try to see and judge simultaneously. Shooting lives in one part of the mind. Editing lives in another. They are both essential, but they are not compatible at the same time.

Technical Mastery Creates Creative Freedom

The goal is to make photographs that feel alive, that feel honest, that feel like you. But you can’t get there if the technical keeps tripping you up. If I were to divide my photographic life into chapters, it would fall neatly into two acts—two eras separated not by age but by intention.

Act One lasted thirty‑five years. It was the era of earning a living. The era of dedicated cameras, assignments, clients, invoices, deadlines, and deliverables. Photography was performative in this period. It was a job, a profession, a career. I was hired to solve problems, to create images that served a purpose, to meet expectations. The work was rewarding, challenging, and often exhilarating, but it was also shaped by external demands. I was photographing for others. I was photographing to sustain a livelihood. I was photographing within the structures of commerce.

Act Two began fifteen years ago, when the iPhone entered my life and quietly rearranged everything. This era has been about living a photographic life rather than making a living from photography. It has been about curiosity, presence, mindfulness, and the simple act of noticing. It has been about returning to the reasons I fell in love with photography in the first place—the wonder, the attention, the sense of discovery. It has been about photographing not because I have to, but because I want to. Because it feels like breathing.

The more I think about it, the more the symbolism of the camera strap and the jock strap makes sense. Both are worn. Both are carried. Both are part of a uniform. Both represent a kind of readiness. But they also represent two different ways of being in the world.

My father lived in the world of the jock strap. I live in the world of the camera strap. But the underlying structure—the devotion, the repetition, the discipline—is the same. We were shaped by different tools, but the same temperament.

I sometimes wonder what my father thought of my photographic life. Not the career part—he understood careers. He understood work, effort, professionalism. But the path part. The part where photography became less about achievement and more about presence. Less about performance and more about attention. Less about doing and more about being.

I suspect he might not have understood it fully, but I also suspect he would have recognized the drive behind it. The need to practice. The need to improve. The need to return to the same craft day after day. The need to build a life around something that feels essential.

The hybrid photographer is the one who can pick up a full‑frame camera and shoot with precision, then slip an iPhone out of their pocket and shoot with instinct. They can move from aperture priority to computational photography without missing a beat. They can talk about dynamic range and also talk about convenience. They can appreciate the discipline of manual exposure and also appreciate the joy of tapping the screen and letting the phone do the work. They can shoot RAW on a mirrorless body and then edit a Live Photo on their phone with the same seriousness.

They are bilingual.

And that bilingualism gives them a kind of freedom that neither the native nor the immigrant fully possesses.

The hybrid photographer understands the history of photography — not as a burden, but as a foundation. They know who Atget is. They know why Eggleston matters. They know what Weston did with peppers and what Siskind did with walls. They know the lineage they’re stepping into. They know the conversations they’re joining. They know the shoulders they’re standing on. They know the craft they’re participating in. But they don’t feel obligated to reenact it. They don’t feel the need to prove anything. They don’t feel the pressure to perform reverence. They don’t feel the weight of tradition pressing down on them.

They carry the history lightly.

And because they carry it lightly, they can move freely.

The hybrid photographer also understands the iPhone — not as a shortcut, but as a legitimate photographic instrument. They know what the phone does well. They know what it struggles with. They know how to work with its computational decisions instead of fighting them. They know how to coax subtlety out of a device that defaults to boldness. They know how to edit with restraint in an ecosystem that encourages excess. They know how to see past the filters, past the presets, past the gimmicks, past the noise.

They know how to make the iPhone behave like a camera, not a toy.

This is the defining trait of the hybrid photographer: they are not threatened by ease. They are not suspicious of convenience. They are not nostalgic for difficulty. They do not believe that suffering is a prerequisite for art. They do not believe that the craft must be hard to be meaningful. They do not believe that the iPhone cheapens photography. They do not believe that the phone diminishes their skills.

They see the way it tries too hard to please. They see the way it hides the controls. They see the way it makes decisions that can’t be undone. They see the way it sometimes gets in the way of the very thing it’s trying to help.

And because they see both sides, they know when to reach for the phone and when to reach for something else.

This is what makes the hybrid photographer so compelling: they are not loyal to the device. They are loyal to the image.

They don’t care whether the photograph was made with a Leica or an iPhone. They care whether the photograph works. They care whether it says something. They care whether it feels alive. They care whether it carries intention. They care whether it holds together. They care whether it has presence. They care whether it has clarity. They care whether it has a design. They care whether it has meaning.

The hybrid photographer is not defined by their tools. They are defined by their seeing.

And that is the real difference between the hybrid and the other two tribes. The native photographer sees the world through the phone. The immigrant photographer sees the phone through the world. The hybrid photographer sees the world — and chooses the tool that best expresses what they see.

They are not app‑happy, but they are not app‑averse. They experiment, but they don’t hide behind experimentation. They edit, but they don’t overedit. They play, but they don’t lose themselves in play. They know when to push and when to hold back. They know when to let the phone lead and when to take control. They know when to trust the device and when to override it.

They are not trying to prove anything — not to themselves, not to the craft, not to the gatekeepers, not to the past.

They are simply trying to make the best photograph they can.

And here is the irony: the hybrid photographer often produces the most consistent, most thoughtful, most mature work of the three groups. It is the next chapter in a story that began long before any of us were born. It is the natural evolution of a medium that has always been shaped by technology, always been shaped by accessibility, always been shaped by convenience, always been shaped by the tools available.

The hybrid photographer is not caught between two worlds. They are the bridge between them.

They are the ones who can honor the past without being trapped by it. They are the ones who can embrace the present without being blinded by it. They are the ones who can move forward without abandoning what came before. They are the ones who can see the iPhone not as a threat, but as an opportunity — a chance to expand the craft, to deepen it, to democratize it, to evolve it.

They are the future of photography — not because they reject the past, but because they carry it with them lightly, gracefully, intelligently, and without fear.

I was born on January 3rd, 1954, in Hyannis, Massachusetts — Cape Cod. If you’ve ever been there in winter, you know it’s a place that teaches you humility early. My family lived a middle‑class life split between Reading, Massachusetts, in the winter and Cape Cod in the summer. My dad was a popular high‑school teacher and head football coach at Reading Memorial High School. My mom was the kind of woman who could make one hell of a seven‑layer bar, run a household, raise three kids, substitute teach, and still find time to be the emotional backbone of the entire neighborhood. I was the middle child, which means I learned early how to survive by being funny, adaptable, and occasionally invisible. It’s a skill set that comes in handy when you spend your life pointing cameras at people.

I wasn’t a prodigy. I wasn’t a straight‑A student. I wasn’t a kid with a plan. I was restless, rebellious, a little aimless, a little lost, a little too in love with hippie chicks, weed, beer, music, and wasting time. I smoked a lot of weed. I drank a lot of beer. I listened to a lot of music. I wasted a lot of time. I was a hippie without a cause, drifting through adolescence like a man waiting for someone to hand him a map. Eventually I found my mooring — but it took a while. And it didn’t come from school, even though I tried. I got an undergraduate degree in education. Then I got two master’s degrees — one in Theology and another in Instructional Systems Design — because apparently I thought the best way to avoid adulthood was to stay in school forever. None of this was part of a plan. I wasn’t building a career. I was just trying to figure out who the hell I was.

My first camera — the one that changed everything — was a Minolta SRT 101. It was 1975. I was young, restless, and working in the galley of a merchant marine ship on my first overseas trip. I didn’t know anything about photography. I didn’t know anything about travel. I didn’t know anything about myself. And I certainly didn’t know anything about life. But the moment I picked up that Minolta, something clicked. Not metaphorically. Literally. The shutter clicked, and something inside me woke up. I felt a connection — immediate, electric, undeniable — to the idea that you could freeze a moment and make it last longer than the moment itself. Photography became the thing that connected me to life. Seriously. It gave me direction. It gave me purpose. It gave me a way to see the world and a reason to move through it. Click again. And again. And again.

Over the next few decades, I shot with whatever cameras I could afford. In the 70s, it was Minoltas. In the 80s, it was Nikons. In the 90s, it was Mamiya medium format. In the 2000s, it was Canon. I shot commercial work, editorial work, travel work, resort work, hospitality work — anything that paid the bills and kept me moving. I shot in dozens of countries. I shot thousands of assignments. I shot hundreds of thousands of frames. I built a career the old‑fashioned way: slowly, painfully, imperfectly, with equal parts luck and stubbornness.

And then everything changed.

On February 18th, 2011, I picked up an iPhone 4 and took a photograph that felt more honest than anything I’d shot in years. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t technically impressive. It wasn’t the kind of image that wins awards or gets printed in glossy magazines. But it felt alive. It felt immediate. It felt like the kind of photograph I’d been trying to make my whole life — simple, human, unpretentious, present.

I didn’t know it then, but that moment was the beginning of the rest of my life.

Since that day, I’ve shot over one million iPhone photographs across fourteen devices in more than sixty countries. Humility aside, I am one of the very few photographers on earth who shoots exclusively with iPhone cameras. And I’m certainly one of the most prolific iPhone shooters you will ever meet. I don’t say that to brag. I say it because it’s the truth. I’ve lived this craft every day for fifteen years. I’ve shot more iPhone frames than most people have taken breaths. I’ve seen what this camera can do. I’ve seen what it can’t do. I’ve pushed it, broken it, cursed at it, praised it, and built a life around it.

I consider myself a traditional photographer who uses very non‑traditional tools. I’ve lived through all of it — analog, digital, mobile — and that gives me a perspective that very few people have today. My approach is unapologetically and unashamedly photographic in nature. I build everything I do around Light, Color, and Design. Those are my pillars. Those are my teachers. Those are the three things that have never failed me, no matter what camera I’m holding.

And because I shoot with an iPhone, I’ve had to deal with the DSLR‑mafia more than I ever bargained for. You know exactly who I mean — the folks who treat their camera bag like a personality trait, who believe photography stopped evolving sometime around the release of the Canon 5D Mark II, who think shooting with an iPhone is basically a moral failure. I’ve heard it all. “It’s not real photography.” “It’s cheating.” “It’s lazy.” “It’s disrespectful to the craft.” One guy once told me I was “destroying the industry,” which is hilarious because I’m pretty sure the industry didn’t even notice.

Did iPhone cameras ruin traditional photography?
Fuck no.

If anything, they added another rich chapter to its already textured tapestry. They democratized the craft. They opened the door wider. They permitted people to try. They made photography less intimidating and more playful. They made it possible for millions of people to discover that they actually love making images. And they forced the rest of the industry to evolve — which is exactly what every healthy art form does.

The iPhone didn’t kill photography.
It reminded photography that it was alive.

And somewhere along the way — somewhere between the travel assignments, the commercial shoots, the iPhone evangelism, the endless conversations about light and composition and storytelling — I fell in love with writing. Not the polished kind. Not the academic kind. Not the “let me impress you with my vocabulary” kind. I fell in love with the kind of writing that feels like talking. The kind that feels like thinking out loud. The kind that feels like sitting across from someone and telling them the truth.

In 2026, I moved to Substack because I wanted a place where I could write the way I shoot — honestly, imperfectly, passionately, with my whole damn heart. I wanted a place where I could teach iPhone photography without gatekeeping. I wanted a place where I could build a community of people who care more about the photograph than the gear. I wanted a place where I could talk about creativity, travel, identity, aging, curiosity, and the weird, wonderful, frustrating, beautiful experience of being a human with a camera in their pocket.

And because honesty matters, here’s the part most origin stories leave out: I’ve been divorced twice. I live alone now — alone but not lonely. I have two beautiful daughters, Emma and Audrey, who are the best things I’ve ever made. They are smart, funny, fierce, and far more evolved than I was at their age. I remain best friends with my former partner, Shannon, the mother of my girls — we didn’t make it as a couple, but we did a damn good job as parents, and we still show up for each other.

And in this current chapter of my life, there’s Shannon, the person who’s usually beside me when I’m chasing light across Cape Cod or whatever stretch of earth has decided to call my name that week. She’s my biggest cheerleader and the true family artist — the one who sees the world in color when I’m stuck in grayscale, the one who reminds me that creativity isn’t a hobby, it’s a way of breathing. She keeps me honest, keeps me curious, and keeps me moving. We found each other in the grass,

And nowhere is this more obvious than in the current obsession with “zero processing,” “no computational photography,” “pure sensor output,” “no HDR,” “no Deep Fusion,” “no Apple pipeline,” and whatever other monastic vows of digital abstinence people are taking this week. Every time I open Substack or YouTube, there’s another breathless announcement: “Finally! A way to bypass Apple’s processing!” As if someone just discovered fire. As if the world has been waiting for the chance to see what an iPhone photo looks like before Apple sprinkles its fairy dust on it.

Let me be clear: Apple’s processing is often too aggressive. It lifts shadows like it’s trying to rescue a drowning toddler. It protects highlights like they’re a national treasure. It smooths, brightens, balances, and “improves” until the image looks like a polite, well‑behaved version of reality. A little too polite. A little too well‑behaved. A little too eager to please. I get it. I’ve said it myself. Apple’s pipeline can be heavy‑handed.

But before we all start chanting “zero processing” like it’s the photographic equivalent of clean eating, let’s remember something important: Apple is not designing its camera system for experts. Apple is designing for the masses. For normal people. For people who want their photos to look “nice,” not “accurate.” For people who want their kids to look cute, their vacations to look sunny, their dinners to look delicious, and their dogs to look like angels. Apple is designing for the person who thinks “RAW” is something you order your steak.

So yes, Apple’s processing is aggressive. But it’s aggressive because it has to be. If Apple shipped true zero‑processing files to the average consumer, the entire planet would riot. People would return their phones. People would demand refunds. People would accuse Apple of sabotage. Because the average consumer does not want “natural.” The average consumer wants “shiny.” They want their photos to look like their lives, but slightly better. Slightly brighter. Slightly more flattering. Slightly more magical.

Which brings me back to the zero‑processing movement.

I’ve been looking at these posts. I’ve been watching these videos. I’ve been examining the images produced by these “pure sensor output” pipelines. And most of them look like they were taken with a potato. A potato that had a long night. A potato that needs therapy. A potato that has seen things.

These images are flat, gray, muddy, lifeless, dull, and aggressively unappealing. They look like security footage from a gas station. They look like the world before God said, “Let there be light.” They look like someone took a perfectly good iPhone and said, “What if we made this worse on purpose?”

And the people posting these images are so proud. So triumphant. So convinced they’ve unlocked the secret truth of photography. They hold up these files like they’re presenting the Dead Sea Scrolls. They say things like, “This is what the iPhone really sees,” as if that’s supposed to be inspiring. As if the iPhone’s unprocessed sensor output were some kind of artistic revelation rather than a reminder that physics is real and tiny sensors are tiny for a reason.

Maybe zero processing is perfect for consumers who want their photos to look like they were taken inside a submarine. Maybe it’s ideal for people who want their vacation memories to resemble a forensic reconstruction. Maybe it’s great for anyone who has ever looked at a beautiful sunset and thought, “You know what this needs? Less beauty.”

But come on, man.

Zero processing is not aimed at the masses. The masses would run screaming. Zero processing is aimed at a very specific type of person: the photographer who loves suffering. The photographer who wants full control. The photographer who wants to start with a file so flat, so dull, so lifeless, so aggressively neutral that it practically begs for intervention. The photographer who wants to spend an hour in Lightroom coaxing the image back from the dead like a digital Lazarus.

And that’s fine. That’s great. That’s a legitimate artistic choice. But let’s not pretend this is some kind of universal improvement. Let’s not pretend this is the future of iPhone photography. Let’s not pretend this is something the average person wants. Let’s not pretend this is a revolution. Let’s not pretend this is anything other than what it is: a niche preference for people who enjoy making their lives harder.

Because here’s the truth, no one wants to say out loud: most of the people celebrating zero processing have no idea how to edit. None. Zero. They think they do. They talk like they do. They use words like “dynamic range,” “color science,” and “tonal integrity” like they’re auditioning for a documentary. But then you look at their edits, and you realize they’re just dragging sliders around until the image looks like a radioactive postcard.

Zero processing is not a magic solution. Zero processing is not a shortcut to authenticity. Zero processing is not a badge of honor. Zero processing is not a personality. Zero processing is not a substitute for taste.

Zero processing is a starting point. And if you don’t know how to finish the job, your photos will look like unfinished homework.

But this is the deeper truth: photographers love making their lives harder. They love it. They crave it. They treat difficulty as a virtue. They treat suffering as a credential. They treat inconvenience as a badge of honor. They treat complexity as a sign of seriousness. They treat ease as a moral failing.

Photographers are the only people who will spend thousands of dollars on gear, hundreds of hours learning techniques, and countless nights arguing online — all to make their lives more difficult. They will reject convenience. They will reject automation. They will reject simplicity. They will reject anything that makes photography easier, faster, or more accessible.

Because deep down, photographers believe that if something is easy, it can’t be good. If something is simple, it can’t be serious. If something is accessible, it can’t be art.

This is why photographers love film. This is why photographers love manual focus. This is why photographers love legacy lenses. This is why photographers love obscure workflows. This is why photographers love anything that requires suffering.

Zero processing is just the latest chapter in a long tradition of photographers making their lives harder for no reason other than the belief that difficulty equals legitimacy.

It doesn’t.

Difficulty equals difficulty.

Photography is not a test of endurance. Photography is not a contest of suffering. Photography is not a competition to see who can make their life the hardest. Photography is the art of seeing. And if zero processing helps you see better, great. But if zero processing is just another way to prove how serious you are, then congratulations — you’ve turned photography into CrossFit.

It’s ridiculous. And also completely true.

Let’s start with the obvious: I was no ladies’ man in high school. Not even close. I had one girlfriend—singular—, and even that was short‑lived. She was from Cape Cod, and for a brief moment I felt like I had stumbled into a coming‑of‑age movie where the shy kid gets the girl. Outside of that, I had crushes. Tons of them. A whole emotional ecosystem of longing. But I was too shy, too unsure, too self‑conscious to do anything about any of it. I admired from afar. I pined in silence. I perfected the art of the hallway glance. I was the undisputed heavyweight champion of unexpressed teenage affection.

And here’s the strange part: I still seem to be attracted to the same “kind” and “style” of girls I dreamed about in high school.

Hippie chicks.

Not the caricatured version. Not the Halloween‑costume version. I mean the real ones—the earthy, artsy, free‑spirited, slightly bohemian women who look like they’ve read Rilke, know how to make a fire, and own at least one pair of Birkenstocks that have seen things. Women who seem like they could explain the meaning of life using only a river rock and a Leonard Cohen lyric.

It’s not that I don’t connect with non‑hippie‑chicks. I do. I have. I can. But hippie chicks still hold court in my heart. They always have. They always will. They are the gravitational pull I never outgrew.

And lately I’ve been wondering: is this psychological? Is this nostalgia? Is this unrequited teenage longing that never got resolved? Or is this just baked into my DNA like eye color and cholesterol levels?

Let’s explore.

The High School Imprint

There’s a theory—half psychology, half folklore—that the people we’re attracted to in adolescence leave a permanent imprint. Not because they were “the one,” but because they were the first. The first to stir something. The first to awaken the emotional machinery. The first to make us feel that strange, electric mix of longing and possibility.

For me, that imprint was unmistakable.

The girls I admired in high school were the ones who floated through the hallways like they were in a different movie than the rest of us. They had a softness, a looseness, a kind of unforced cool. They wore long skirts and oversized sweaters. They doodled in notebooks. They listened to James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. They smelled faintly of patchouli and rebellion. They were the ones who seemed to know something about life the rest of us hadn’t figured out yet.

I didn’t talk to them. I didn’t date them. I didn’t even try. But I noticed them. And apparently, that was enough.

Because here I am, decades later, still drawn to that same energy. Still responding to that same vibe. Still feeling that same gravitational pull toward women who look like they’ve been to a drum circle and cried during a sunrise.

Unrequited Love as a Lifelong Compass

There’s another theory—this one more psychological—that unrequited love becomes a kind of emotional compass. When you never get to explore a particular attraction, it stays suspended in your imagination. It never gets resolved. It never gets complicated. It never gets messy. It remains pure, idealized, untouched by reality.

In other words: the crush becomes the blueprint. And the blueprint becomes the preference. And the preference becomes the pattern. And the pattern becomes the thing you keep circling back to, even when you don’t fully understand why.

Was I in love with any of those girls in high school? No. I didn’t know them well enough to be in love. But I was in love with the idea of them—the vibe, the aesthetic, the energy, the freedom, the softness, the sense that they were living in a slightly different dimension where art and nature and emotion mattered more than football scores and cafeteria politics.

Maybe that’s what stuck. Maybe that’s what imprinted. Maybe that’s what my heart keeps returning to.

DNA or Daydream?

Of course, there’s always the possibility that this isn’t psychological at all. Maybe it’s biological. Maybe some of us are just wired for certain energies. Maybe attraction is less about memory and more about temperament.

I’ve always been drawn to creativity, introspection, curiosity, gentleness, and a certain kind of emotional openness. Hippie chicks tend to have those qualities in abundance. They’re expressive. They’re intuitive. They’re comfortable in their own skin. They’re connected to something—nature, art, music, meaning—that resonates with me.

Maybe it’s not about high school at all. Maybe it’s about who I am. Maybe it’s about who I’ve always been.

Or maybe it’s both. Maybe the wiring and the daydream fused. Maybe the teenage longing found a home in the adult personality. Maybe the heart doesn’t distinguish between memory and biology. Maybe it just knows what it likes.

A Necessary Humor Break

Let’s be honest: there’s something inherently funny about a grown man still being emotionally tethered to the aesthetic preferences of his 16‑year‑old self. It’s like my heart is saying:

“Sure, you’ve lived a full life. You’ve traveled the world. You’ve had relationships. You’ve grown, evolved, matured. But have you considered… a woman with a nose ring and a woven bag?”

Or:

“Yes, yes, emotional compatibility is important. Shared values matter. Communication is key. But what about someone who owns a pottery wheel and can recite poetry”

Or:

“Therapy is great. Self‑awareness is great. But have you tried falling for someone who makes her own granola?”

It’s ridiculous. And also completely true.

The Heart Remembers What the Mind Forgets

Here’s what I’ve come to believe: the heart has a memory. A long one. A stubborn one. A selective one. It remembers the early sparks. It remembers the early longings. It remembers the early archetypes. It remembers the early versions of beauty, desire, and connection.

Even when the mind moves on. Even when life evolves. Even when the circumstances change.

The heart keeps a file. And every once in a while, it pulls that file out and says: “Hey, remember this? This still matters.”

Where This Leaves Me

Honestly? Not much. And also everything.

It means I’m human. It means I’m shaped by my past. It means I’m wired a certain way. It means my attractions have a story. It means my preferences have roots. It means my heart is still in conversation with my younger self.

And there’s something kind of beautiful about that.

Because the truth is, we don’t outgrow our early selves. We carry them. We negotiate with them. We laugh at them. We learn from them. We forgive them. We listen to them. We let them remind us of who we were before life got complicated.

And sometimes—apparently—they still get a vote in who we’re attracted to.

I don’t think my attraction to hippie chicks is a problem to solve. I don’t think it’s a psychological wound. I don’t think it’s a sign of immaturity. I don’t think it’s nostalgia gone wild.

I think it’s a thread. A through‑line. A continuity between the boy I was and the man I am. A reminder that some parts of us stay consistent, even as everything else changes.

And honestly? I’m okay with that.

Because if the worst thing I’ve carried from high school into adulthood is a soft spot for women who love nature, art, music, and emotional openness… I’ll take it.

There are far worse ghosts to live with.

Which is why I’ve been reluctant to admit something I’ve quietly come to believe after more than fifty years behind a camera.

I don’t think photographers take photographs.

I think we received them.

I know exactly how that sounds.

Trust me, no one is rolling their eyes harder than I am.

But stay with me.

The older I get, the more the word “take” feels wrong. It’s such an aggressive little verb. We take pictures. We take portraits. We capture moments. We shoot people. It’s curious, really, that the language of photography borrows so heavily from possession, hunting, and conquest, as though the act of making a photograph is somehow about claiming ownership over the world.

Yet when I think about nearly every meaningful photograph I’ve ever made, that’s not what happened at all.

The photograph wasn’t mine.

The morning light wasn’t mine. The old man’s weathered face wasn’t mine. The yellow umbrella crossing a rain-soaked street wasn’t mine. The long shadow stretching across a white wall, the child laughing in a fountain, the peeling paint on an abandoned building, the flock of birds lifting into the evening sky—none of it belonged to me.

Those moments were already happening. They had their own existence, entirely independent of whether I showed up with a camera.

For one brief instant, I happened to notice.

That’s a very different experience from taking.

Every photograph I’ve ever loved began before I arrived. The light had already decided where it wanted to fall. Colors had already begun their quiet conversation with one another. People were already living their lives, completely unaware that they were about to become part of someone else’s visual memory. Even composition, that thing photographers love to congratulate themselves for, often feels less like invention than recognition. The relationships were already there. My job wasn’t to create them. My job was simply to see them.

Perhaps that’s why photography has always felt less like manufacturing something and more like discovering something.

Receiving, however, doesn’t mean waiting passively for the universe to sprinkle little masterpieces in front of your lens. That’s where the woo-woo crowd and I politely part company. There is no magic here. No cosmic energy directing traffic. No invisible force rewards photographers with good karma. No incense burning beside my camera bag. No sacred alignment of Jupiter and Venus determines whether today’s photographs will be sharp.

There’s only attention.

Deep, sustained, intentional attention.

Receiving photographs is surprisingly hard work because it asks something of us before we ever press the shutter. It asks us to slow down enough to notice. To become curious again. To leave behind the shopping list of subjects we think we should photograph and become available to the ones quietly presenting themselves.

That availability is harder than it sounds.

Most of us walk through the world with our minds somewhere else. We’re thinking about lunch, yesterday’s conversation, tomorrow’s meeting, the bills waiting at home, or whether we remembered to answer that email. Our eyes are open, but they’re rarely attentive. We see enough to navigate the sidewalk without bumping into people, but very little beyond that.

Photography asks for a different kind of seeing.

It asks us to linger.

It asks us to notice how afternoon light slides across a brick wall differently from morning light. It asks us to see that one small patch of orange is surrounded by a sea of blue. It asks us to recognize that a stranger’s gesture, lasting no more than half a second, somehow says something honest about being human.

None of those moments can be forced.

They can only be received.

When people ask me where I find my photographs, they’re often disappointed by the answer. I don’t really find them at all. I walk. I look. I pay attention. Most days, nothing particularly remarkable happens. Then, without warning, something ordinary rearranges itself into something quietly extraordinary. It might last two seconds. Sometimes less.

The photograph wasn’t hiding.

I finally noticed it.

Looking back over the past five decades, I’m beginning to think that the quality of my photography has had far less to do with the cameras I’ve owned than with the quality of my attention. Better cameras certainly make certain things easier, but they don’t make anyone more observant. They don’t teach patience. They don’t create curiosity. They don’t help us recognize beauty where everyone else sees only another ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

Those are human qualities.

Not technical ones.

Maybe that’s why I’ve become so attached to this little word.

Receive.

It reminds me that photography begins with humility. The world doesn’t owe me beautiful photographs. Every meaningful image I make is, in some small way, a gift of circumstance, timing, light, and awareness. My contribution matters, of course, but it comes after everything else has already fallen quietly into place.

I simply have to be present enough to recognize the invitation.

So yes, I realize this all sounds just a little woo-woo.

I’m comfortable with that.

After fifty years of photography, I’ve learned that some ideas sound softer than they really are. This isn’t a mystical philosophy. It’s a practical one. Slow down. Pay attention. Become receptive. The world is constantly arranging itself into photographs. Most of them will disappear unnoticed. Now and then, if we’re fortunate, patient, and fully present, one of them will briefly introduce itself.

And when it does, I no longer feel like I’ve taken anything.

I feel like I’ve been allowed to receive it.
