Redefining the “Deficit”: Shifting from Compliance to Co-regulation in Mental Health

Speech script, 40 minutes, NeuroHub Community, 2026 Autistic Mental Health Conference

Opening (0:00–2:00)

Good morning, and thank you to David, Adele, and the whole NeuroHub team for building this conference and for holding space for this talk.

I'm Isha Snow, the founder of Autistic Standpoint Theory, a researcher at Washington State University Vancouver, and the founder of NeuroHomes, a nonprofit building housing for neurodivergent adults in rural Washington. I also have a paper currently under peer review, "Childism and the Deficit Delusion," that makes a version of this same argument from the development-theory side, so if any of what follows lands for you, that piece goes deeper into it once it's out. I didn't come to this work from a clinic. I came to it from watching, over and over, what happens when a person's adaptations get misread as their pathology. I was diagnosed late myself, and I went back to college after a recent PTSD diagnosis, trying to make sense of experiences that had left me with skill regression and an increasing fit with autistic criteria. That's an inductive, ethnographic way into this work, not a clinical one, and it's what responds to what I actually found.

Here's the claim at the center of this talk: standard mental health practice frequently mistakes context-dependent adaptations for inherent comorbidities. That's a specific, correctable error, and I'm going to call it what it is, a diagnostic category error. I want to be upfront that this is my theoretical argument, built on an observation I think is defensible, not something I'm claiming is already settled across the field. I'll come back later to what would actually prove parts of it wrong. I want to show you why that error happens, not as malice but as a structural feature of how we diagnose. I want to show you where it's written into the body, literally, at the level of measurable biology. And I want to talk about what it would mean to build mental health support that responds to regulation instead of compliance.

Five Domains, One Phenomenon (2:00–3:30)

Before I get into any of that, I want to talk about the lens I'm using, because it isn't the standard clinical one. I've studied under Dr. Bonnie Hewlett, who developed a cross-cultural lens as an anthropologist working with the CDC to reduce Ebola outbreaks, and I applied her cross-cultural framework to evaluate autism using anthropology here.

Clinical practice, most of the time, treats autism as a single-domain problem. Individual, developmental, something assessed in one person sitting across from one clinician. What I'm going to show you today comes out of a different tradition, one where at least five domains act on the same phenomenon at once. There's political ecology: access to resources, environmental stressors, the policies and safety nets that either buffer people or don't. There's cultural niche construction, meaning the institutions and community norms, the subsistence and residence patterns a person is actually embedded in. There's evolutionary biology, life history theory, kin selection, an adaptationist read on why a trait persists. There's developmental psychology, cognitive development, trauma, neuroplasticity, most of what a clinical intake actually does ask about. And there's culture itself, the schemas and practices and models of belonging a person was handed long before anyone screened them for anything.

Standard diagnosis collapses all five of those into one axis: individual, developmental, clinical. That isn't exactly wrong. It's incomplete in a specific, correctable way. Cross-cultural anthropology isn't arguing that the clinical picture is false, it's insisting the other four domains were never actually optional, just made invisible by where the frame got drawn. Everything I'm walking you through today, the biology, the cross-national data, the compliance-versus-co-regulation argument, sits inside that wider frame. It doesn't replace the clinical one, it expands it by adding context.

The Diagnostic Category Error (3:30–8:00)

Let's start with the error itself.

Diagnostic manuals work by behavior. They ask what a person does, how often, and whether it interferes with functioning. That's a reasonable starting point for a checklist, but it's a terrible starting point for understanding why the behavior is happening in the first place, because the same behavior can come from completely different places.

Take shutdown, or meltdown, or withdrawal and rigidity around transitions. In the standard model these get read as core autistic traits, intrinsic to the person, stable across context, evidence of the underlying disorder. But watch when they actually happen and you'll notice they cluster around specific conditions: unpredictability, sensory assault, social demand without relational safety, environments that require constant masking just to get through the day. Change the environment and the "symptom" changes with it. That's the signature of an adaptation. A context-sensitive behavior shouldn't automatically get treated as a fixed, stable trait, and, to clarify, I'm not saying autistic traits disappear the moment an environment improves. I'm saying that intensity, visibility, and behavioral expression can shift enormously with context, and a checklist built to catch fixed traits isn't well suited to notice that.

This is where standard practice makes its category error. It takes a signal that's fundamentally relational, produced at the interface between a nervous system and an environment, and encodes it as though it were intrinsic; a property of the individual alone. Once that move gets made, the next step is comorbidity almost automatically. If the distress is intrinsic to the person, then anxiety, depression, oppositionality, eating difficulties, and a dozen other secondary diagnoses start to look like separate conditions stacked on top of autism. Often what they actually are is the same underlying signal architecture responding to the same underlying environmental stress, just showing up in different diagnostic columns, because those columns were never built to see the connection between them.

I want to be precise about what I'm claiming here and what I'm not. I'm not saying autism is caused by environment. I'm not saying there's no biology. If anything I'm saying the opposite: the biology is real, it's measurable, and it's more interesting than a checklist can capture. Let me show you what I mean.

Three Constellations, Not One Deficit (8:00–10:00)

Autistic Standpoint Theory proposes that what we call "the autism spectrum" isn't one thing varying in severity along a single line. It's the intersection of three semi-independent biological constellations, genomic, epigenetic, and neurochemical, each contributing its own axis of variation, each shaped by environment differently, and each needing a different kind of support.

No single constellation is necessary or sufficient on its own, and that's really the point. When we collapse all three into one behavioral checklist, we aren't simplifying. We're erasing the mechanism and grouping people who arrived at similar behavior through entirely different biological pathways.

Let me walk through each one.

Constellation I: Synaptic Scaffolding (10:00–14:00)

The first constellation is genetic. Think of it as the hardware layer. Genes like SHANK3, CNTNAP2, and the neuroligin family govern how densely dendritic spines form, how GABAergic interneurons distribute through the cortex, how synapses get built in the first place. This sets the baseline sensitivity of a person's signal architecture, essentially how much a nervous system amplifies incoming sensory and social information before it even reaches conscious processing.

This matters for the compliance-versus-co-regulation question. High synaptic sensitivity isn't inherently a problem. Put it in a rich, well-supported, appropriately paced environment and that same sensitivity becomes a gift, with enhanced perceptual discrimination, noticing what other people miss, depth. Put the exact same architecture in a loud, fast, socially demanding, low-support environment and it produces overload. Same hardware, opposite outcome. The deficit isn't in the wiring. It's in the mismatch between the wiring and the room.

This constellation is the hardest to change, since it's genetic, but it's also the one current research infrastructure is best positioned to study. Large genomic cohorts like SPARK make it possible to test whether polygenic risk clusters map onto stable, identifiable sensory-processing profiles independent of a person's environmental history. That study is where I'm hoping to take my capstone project at Washington State University this fall.

Constellation II: Stress-Regulatory Epigenetic Loci (14:00–20:00)

This is the constellation I most want you to leave this room remembering, because it shows you, biologically, how a social system gets written into a body.

Two genes anchor this axis. OXTR, the oxytocin receptor, governs social bonding and autonomic social engagement, how safe another person's presence registers to your nervous system. I'll flag now that the methylation evidence for OXTR in autism specifically is heterogeneous and developmentally variable, so I'm leaning on its general biological role more than any single finding. NR3C1, the glucocorticoid receptor, is the rate-limiting step in HPA-axis feedback. It's the molecular brake on your stress response.

Here's the mechanism, and I want to walk through it slowly because it's the whole argument in miniature. Chronic social-environmental stress has been associated with altered NR3C1 methylation in some studies. Methylation is a chemical modification to DNA that doesn't change the underlying genetic code, but changes how readable that gene is, meaning how much of that stress-brake protein actually gets made. This is peripheral methylation, measured in blood or saliva, and peripheral methylation shouldn't be assumed to directly represent what's happening in brain tissue. Epigenetic regulation is dynamic rather than fixed, though how reversible this particular change is, and under what conditions, is still an open empirical question. It's best understood as a live record of environmental history that may get written into the regulatory system responsible for turning threat responses off, not a settled, one-directional mechanism.

When NR3C1 methylation increases under chronic stress, the model predicts the brake weakens and HPA-axis negative feedback gets impaired. Clinically, that could look like chronically elevated threat readiness, impaired context integration (because a nervous system running hot on threat detection has less bandwidth for nuance), and social withdrawal. Every one of those, on its own, looks exactly like a core autistic trait on a diagnostic checklist, and you genuinely can't tell them apart by behavior alone. Watching someone shut down in a meeting, you cannot tell whether you're seeing an intrinsic autistic trait or a stress-regulation system responding to its environment. That's an epistemic limit of behavioral observation.

That's the diagnostic category error, made biological, at least as a hypothesis. And I want to be clear that's exactly what this next part is: individualist, hyper-independent, low-relational-buffering social ecologies, the kind that isolate people, that treat asking for support as failure, that run on constant unstructured social demand, are predicted under this model to show higher rates of NR3C1 methylation across the population. That's a prediction, not a demonstrated finding; the population-level relationship hasn't been tested. But the logic isn't that autism gets caused by society. It's that a genuinely sensitive nervous system, placed somewhere without enough relational buffering, will show you its stress biology, and that stress biology could end up looking a great deal like the thing we've been diagnosing as inherent pathology.

Constellation III: Dopaminergic and Monoamine Synthesis (20:00–23:00)

The third constellation runs through a molecule most of you have probably never heard of outside a biochemistry course: BH4, tetrahydrobiopterin. BH4 is the rate-limiting cofactor for synthesizing dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, so it sits upstream of nearly every neurotransmitter system we associate with mood, motivation, and executive function.

CSF BH4 is consistently found lower in autistic individuals, though this finding is documented but not universal, and the full causal chain from chronic stress to inflammation to BH4 depletion to phenotype is theoretically integrated rather than one single, continuously validated pipeline. I'll come back to why that matters in a minute.

Here's the plausible mechanism, and I want to underline the word plausible. Chronic inflammation, potentially linked to the same social-environmental stress discussed in Constellation II, may deplete BH4. Lower BH4 would predict impaired monoamine synthesis, which could show up as executive function differences, attentional differences, slower cognitive updating and reversal learning. That's a proposed pathway, not something I've demonstrated end to end. The research proposal for my capstone could prove or disprove the theory.

Where This Sits Among Other Models (23:00–24:30)

The synaptic pathology model, SHANK3, CNTNAP2, and the rest, is real and useful, and Constellation I is built directly on it. Its limit is that it treats sensitivity as pathology rather than trait, with no real account of why the same variant produces such different outcomes in different rooms. The social-communication deficit model, the current DSM framing, gave us something valuable too, from inside its own tradition: Milton's Double Empathy Problem, which reframes the mismatch as mutual rather than one-directional. AST builds on that correction instead of discarding it. And the executive function model explains the high overlap between autism and ADHD better than almost anything else does; Constellation III's monoamine pathway predicts a version of that same thing.

What AST adds is integration, treating these as interacting mechanisms inside one environmentally-responsive model instead of three competing accounts each explaining a slice of the picture.

Two Pathways, One Flattened Surface (24:30–26:00)

Before I zoom out to population data, I want to pull those three constellations back together into a simpler picture, because the detail can obscure the actual shape of the argument.

Group them into two pathways. Pathway A is genetic sensitivity, biological predisposition, essentially Constellation I: heightened sensory processing, synaptic density, the hardware. Pathway B is stress and environmental adaptation, essentially Constellations II and III together. Trauma is one important form that takes, but not the only one: attachment disruption, social fragmentation, defensive withdrawal, avoidant hypervigilance all belong here too. Two genuinely different starting points, two different biological routes in.

Here's the category error again, in its cleanest form. Both pathways can produce the same observable behavior. A withdrawn, hypervigilant, sensorially overwhelmed presentation can come from Pathway A meeting a demanding environment, or from Pathway B with barely any genetic loading at all, or, most commonly, from both, in whatever proportion fits that person's actual history. Standard diagnostic practice has no way of telling these apart, because it was never built to look underneath the behavior in the first place. Two distinct pathways get flattened onto a single behavioral surface, and the underlying mechanism, the thing you'd actually need to know to help someone, gets erased in the flattening.

What the Cross-National Data Add (26:00–31:00)

I want to zoom out from biology for a moment, because I think the individual mechanism gets more convincing once you see it operating at population scale.

I ran a cross-national secondary analysis across fifty-five countries, testing whether Hofstede's Individualism Index, a validated measure of how individualist versus collectivist a culture is, predicts ASD diagnostic prevalence after controlling for GDP and diagnostic infrastructure. This is my analysis, not a settled finding from the field. Among the fifty-one countries without mandatory national autism screening, individualism correlated with diagnosed prevalence at r equals 0.71. That correlation survives controlling for national wealth, and it survives controlling for how much diagnostic infrastructure a country has. It doesn't disappear, though it does attenuate, which is what you'd expect if it partly operates through detection. On its own, this can't distinguish true prevalence variation from detection variation; keep that in mind for what follows.

The most theoretically important finding is what I call the two-pattern model. Four countries, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, have mandatory, population-wide developmental screening built into standard well-child care. All four sit dramatically above the regression line. They show autism rates one point seven times higher than GDP-matched Western countries without mandatory screening, despite having comparatively low individualism scores. Their diagnostic policy is overriding the social-ecology pattern that predicts everyone else.

This first figure splits that same analysis out by GDP tier, poor, middle-income, and wealthy countries each getting their own regression line. Look at what happens. Among wealthy countries the line is steep; individualism tracks diagnosed prevalence closely. Among poor countries it's nearly flat. That isn't a flaw in the data. That's consistent with the prediction. Diagnostic visibility requires diagnostic infrastructure to exist in the first place, so the social-ecology signal can't show up in a system that isn't equipped to detect much of anything. Notice where the four screening countries sit: above every single tier's line, at relatively low individualism scores. That's consistent with systematic ascertainment surfacing more of what social ecology alone would predict less of, though I can't prove that's the mechanism from this data alone. And off in the far corner sits the United States, occupying the high-individualism, high-diagnosed-prevalence end of the distribution.

Now, I take critique of this kind of cross-national work seriously, and one of the strongest objections is a fair one. Hofstede's individualism index comes from IBM employee surveys conducted in the nineteen-seventies: urban, educated, corporate, and half a century old. So I re-ran the entire analysis using a completely independent, modern measure, the individualism-collectivism index developed by Akaliyski and colleagues, first published as a 2025 preprint and subsequently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2026. This second figure is that re-run. Different index, different decade, different research team entirely, and the correlation holds: r equals 0.62, still highly significant, same screening-country overshoot, same United States sitting alone at the extreme. If this were an artifact of one dated survey instrument, swapping it out should have broken the pattern. It didn't.

This last figure just puts both indices on the same plot against prevalence, side by side in three dimensions. This one is illustrative rather than a separate statistical model in its own right, but it makes the point visually in a way the numbers alone can't. Two independently constructed measures of the same cultural construct, built decades apart by different people, are picking up the same signal. That isn't what you'd expect from noise.

Why does any of this matter for a talk about compliance and co-regulation? Because it rules out the boring explanation. If this were simply wealthy countries diagnosing more because they have more psychiatrists, the screening countries would fall on the same line as everyone else. They don't. Something about relational social structure is shaping who becomes visible to a diagnostic system, independent of how well-resourced that system is, and that same social structure, per Constellations II and III, is actively shaping the underlying stress biology too.

Same Root, Two Names (31:00–32:30)

Before I get to what we do about all this, I want to name one more piece of the pattern, because once you see it you won't be able to unsee it, and it changes how you hear everything that follows. This is something I learned as a survivor of domestic violence.

Look at coercive control in a relationship, then look at the double empathy problem in a conversation between an autistic and a non-autistic person. On the surface these come from completely different literatures, one's domestic abuse research, one's autism research. But look at the structure underneath. In coercive control, one person's autonomy becomes the rule, and the other's gets monitored, managed, corrected, treated as the thing that needs fixing. In the double empathy problem, two genuinely different ways of communicating miss each other, and instead of reading that mismatch as mutual, one side gets blamed for the entire gap.

That's what I'd argue is the same root wearing two names, a structural pattern I'm pointing at rather than a proven shared causal mechanism. Individualism treats one standard as neutral by default, then locates the "problem" in whoever doesn't match it. I don't think it's a coincidence that the same logic shows up in both places. It looks like the same manufactured baseline, just operating at two different scales.

From Compliance to Co-regulation (32:30–36:30)

So what do we do with this.

Historically, the dominant model in autism intervention has been compliance: reduce the behavior, extinguish the stimming, produce eye contact, produce sitting still, produce the appearance of regulation regardless of what's actually happening in the nervous system underneath. Compliance training can produce behavior that looks like success on a checklist while doing nothing for the biology I just walked you through, or actively making it worse. You can suppress a threat response's outward behavior without touching the HPA-axis dysregulation that's driving it. You can actually make things worse this way, because now the person is spending extra resources masking a threat response that's still running underneath.

Co-regulation is a different target entirely. It doesn't ask whether the behavior looks regulated. It asks whether the nervous system is actually safe, and whether that safety is coming from relationship rather than suppression.

I think about this through a framework I call Relational Proprioception, the idea that how we're located in relationship is the primary way we locate ourselves at all. Developmentally there are three anchor positions we're always negotiating. A "we" position of merged, earliest belonging. A "you" position of attachment and reciprocity, being met and soothed by another. An "I" position of differentiation, agency, boundaries. Healthy regulation isn't camping permanently in any one of those. It's fluid movement between them, available on demand. When relational trauma or chronic environmental deprivation interrupts that movement, a nervous system gets stuck. Stuck in "we" can look like collapsed boundaries and chronic dissociation in high-demand settings. Stuck in "you" can look like hypervigilance and rejection sensitivity. Stuck in "I" can look like rigid self-protection and defensive isolation, precisely the profile that gets read as "resistant to intervention."

Practically, shifting a system from compliance to co-regulation comes down to a few concrete things. Building environments with enough relational buffering that Constellation II never has to run hot in the first place: autonomy-supportive rather than compliance-demanding, predictable rather than arbitrary, structured around consent rather than extinction targets. Treating a stress response as information about the environment rather than a symptom to train away. And recognizing that when the environment changes and the "symptom" changes with it, you've just gotten your answer about where the deficit actually was all along.

Holding the Uncertainty Honestly (36:30–38:30)

This framework is hypothesis-generating. It isn't a settled account. The BH4 mechanism needs hedging. The cross-national correlation can't, by itself, distinguish true prevalence variation from detection variation; the two-pattern finding is the strongest piece of it, and I've foregrounded it accordingly. The full causal chain running from social structure through epigenetic modification through neurochemistry to phenotype is a theoretical integration of adjacent, individually well-supported findings. It isn't yet one continuously validated pipeline, and I don't think it would be honest to present it as one.

I say this not to undercut the argument, but because I think it's the actual difference between a framework and an ideology. A framework tells you what would prove it wrong. If a three-axis biological model doesn't explain more outcome variance than diagnosis alone, if biological clusters just map back onto DSM categories, if methylation doesn't mediate the relationship between environment and physiology once you control for genetics, then this is wrong and it needs revision. That's the standard I'm holding it to, and honestly, it's the standard I'd ask this whole field to hold every model to, including the ones already sitting comfortably inside the manual.

Closing (38:30–40:00)

Here's what I want you to carry out of this room.

The behavior a clinician sees isn't, on its own, enough information to tell an intrinsic trait from an adaptive response. That distinction requires looking at what happens when the environment changes, and increasingly, it requires looking at what's happening at the level of a methylated glucocorticoid receptor, a depleted cofactor, a synaptic architecture meeting a room it was never built for. Compliance-based intervention optimizes for the behavior a checklist can see. Co-regulation optimizes for the nervous system underneath it, and that's where the actual biology lives.

The spectrum isn't a line of severity. It's the behavioral residue of three interacting biological constellations, operating in different proportions, across different developmental histories, in different social ecologies. Spectrum describes the variance; the constellations explain it. And the environment we build around a person isn't some soft, secondary consideration to handle once the "real" biological work is done. The environment is one of the mechanisms. It's written into the body whether we intend it to be or not.

A study out of Stanford this week found something that should unsettle the field more than it seems to have. Researchers ran four natural language processing models over recorded interviews with children, ages 9 to 13, talking about stressful events in their lives. Six years later, those models predicted which children had developed mental health conditions more accurately than a panel of trained clinicians using a standard trauma-severity inventory, cortisol, and telomere length.

And the thing that carried the predictive weight wasn't what the children said, it was how they said it. Small connector words. The scaffolding of a sentence, not its content.

The researchers read this as a proof of concept for scalable risk detection, and within their frame, it is. But sit with the finding for a moment outside that frame and a different question opens up. If style predicts distress better than content, and style is the layer of language closest to the machinery that produces sentences rather than the meaning riding inside them, then what these models may be detecting is not risk in the abstract. It may be friction. The measurable strain of running a mind through a linguistic architecture it wasn't built to run through natively.

I don't think these findings are a coincidence. I think it's closer to the reverse. Their own numbers, read through the lens Autistic Standpoint Theory's work has been building for years rather than through the lens they built the study with, come out looking like confirmation of what I've been arguing (Austim relationship to colonial linguistics and biological resistance to a global history of forced assimilation) rather than a separate finding that happens to rhyme with it. They found the effect. I can tell them what it is. I've been telling them. This is exactly what I've been saying for the past year on this Substack, folks.

The architecture in question

Jackson et al. (2019), analyzing emotion concepts across 2,474 languages from 20 language families, found that the semantic networks organizing feeling are not universal. Which emotions cluster together, which sit as opposites, which shade into one another, all of it varies by language family in ways that are structural rather than incidental. Anxiety clusters with fear in Indo-European languages. In Austroasiatic languages it clusters with grief and regret instead.

This matters because the diagnostic categories used to assess the children in the Stanford study, and used in clinical psychology generally, were built inside one of those semantic architectures. English, and the Indo-European emotional grammar underneath it, is not a neutral container that different minds simply fill differently. It is itself a specific cognitive commitment: bounded, individuated, oriented around a self that has feelings rather than a self constituted through relation.

Broca's and Wernicke's areas are where that commitment gets executed in real time. Wernicke's decodes incoming language into meaning. Broca's encodes meaning back out into socially legible speech, calibrated to context, timing, implication, all the unspoken pragmatic weight that native fluency carries invisibly. In autistic processing, imaging work has repeatedly found reduced functional integration between these two regions even where the structural wiring between them is intact. The comprehension is often full. The translation into the imposed social-linguistic code is where the cost accumulates. Not grammar. Pragmatics. The part of language that a linguistic system built for one kind of mind treats as automatic and a differently constituted mind has to construct by hand, sentence by sentence, connector by connector.

That is the layer the Stanford models were reading.

The history underneath the architecture

None of this happened by accident of nature alone. The linguistic architecture now treated as the neutral baseline for diagnosing distress in children was, in living memory, imposed by force. At the Phoenix Indian School and dozens of institutions like it, children were punished for producing language in their native relational grammar. That punishment was not incidental to language suppression, it was language suppression, executed directly on the neurological site where Broca's area produces speech in whatever pattern is native to it. Fifty-three burial sites are the accounting of what that cost.

Relational ontology, the frame I have been building this work toward, makes the underlying claim explicit: selfhood is not a bounded individual unit that language happens to describe from the outside. It is constituted relationally, through embeddedness, obligation, and mutual recognition, and different linguistic architectures encode fundamentally different answers to what a self even is. The individualist, Indo-European architecture that dominates clinical psychology is not the default state of the human mind arrived at through progress. It is one historically specific and, in significant part, forcibly installed answer to that question, now sitting in the position of unmarked normal.

What the finding actually measures

Put the pieces together and the Stanford result reads differently. A child's sentence-level style, the connectors, the function words, the shape of the sentence before its content ever arrives, is the observable trace of how much relational-cognitive translation that child's nervous system is performing to produce speech inside an architecture it may not be natively built for, or that a culture of forced assimilation has actively worked to strip out of them. The children showing the clearest signal of future distress are not necessarily the children with the most damaged minds. They may be the children where the friction between native relational cognition and imposed individualist linguistic architecture is least resolved, least buffered, least metabolized by the time anyone is listening.

This reframing does not erase real suffering, and it should not be read as a claim that distress itself is manufactured or illusory. The study's own strongest protective finding, that children who mentioned therapists or counselors showed the clearest resilience signal, sits in real tension with a pure resistance-to-assimilation account, since institutional mental healthcare is itself an artifact of the same individualist system. The more honest reading is not that therapy is the enemy of relational cognition, but that it may be one of the only relationally structured spaces the individualist system still permits, a place where someone is required to sit with another person's meaning rather than process it at arm's length. That the presence of even one such relationship shows up as protective is not a contradiction of the argument. It may be its clearest confirmation.

What the Stanford researchers built is a genuinely useful instrument. What it may be measuring, underneath their own framing, is not simply who is at risk. It is where the cost of forced linguistic and relational assimilation is still being paid, in real time, by children too young to have named it, in the smallest words in the sentence.

Autism might not be directly Linguistically Created, but Autistic Distress absolutely is.

It should be understood as an interpretive argument built on top of separately established findings, not as a claim any of the cited authors have made themselves.

Introduction: A Methodological Claim

This protocol is built on a methodological claim that deserves to be stated plainly before the procedure is described.

Traditional peer review is a gatekeeping infrastructure. It requires institutional affiliation, credentialed reviewers, editorial access, and submission processes that presuppose the researcher operates within a system that has already recognized them as legitimate. For research produced from standpoint positions outside that infrastructure, this creates a structural problem: the validity mechanism itself reproduces the epistemic asymmetry the research is analyzing. Requiring institutional peer review as the condition of legitimacy for research documenting how institutional credentialing functions as epistemic gatekeeping is not a neutral methodological requirement. It is the mechanism demonstrating itself.

This protocol proposes an alternative that is more epistemologically honest than either claiming peer review that does not exist or abandoning validity claims entirely.

The AST battery measures behavioral patterns in a text record. It does not measure subjective impressions, interpretive preferences, or theoretical commitments. It assigns scores to observable behaviors against operationally defined criteria. Given a sufficiently precise scoring rubric and a complete behavioral record, any rater, human or artificial, applying the same criteria to the same record should produce scores within an acceptable range of each other.

Large language models trained by independent organizations on separate corpora have no stake in the outcome of any particular scoring session. They do not know the researcher. They have no professional relationship with the subject. They cannot be influenced by the social dynamics of the exchange they are scoring. When multiple independent AI systems, given the same instrument and the same record, produce convergent scores, that convergence is a validity signal. It is not traditional peer review. It is something structurally more interesting: independent pattern-matching by systems with no shared training pipeline and no shared motivation, applied to the same behavioral record, producing the same result.

The framework predicts this will work precisely because closed-system cognition is not a subjective judgment. It is a measurable behavioral pattern. The AI systems are pattern-matching machines. The battery is a pattern specification. The behavioral record is the data. The output is a score.

This protocol documents how to run that process so that anyone can independently replicate AST case study findings without institutional access, credentialed reviewers, or gatekeeping infrastructure of any kind.

What Independent Replication Means in This Context

Replication here means: a person with no connection to the original research, using the published instrument and the standardized prompt set below, applies the AST battery to the same behavioral record used in the original case study and obtains scores within one point of the published scores on each proxy across at least two of three AI systems tested.

Convergence is defined as: all five proxy scores within ±0.5 of the published scores on at least two of the three AI systems used.

Divergence is a finding, not a failure. If a replicator obtains significantly different scores, that is reportable data that contributes to the methodological development of the battery, not evidence that the protocol does not work.

Required Materials

1. The published scoring instrument

The AST Closed-System Cognition Battery, located on OSF in the protocols folder. Both a .txt. and a .pdf version of the project overview, scoring and the replication protocol files have been provided there.

2. The behavioral record

The full text of the exchange being scored, prepared according to the submission format below. Names and identifying information should be replaced with role designations (Subject, Researcher, or similar). The record must be complete, partial records produce unreliable scores.

A sample behavioral record (R2 case study) is provided in the OSF behavioral records folder. Or you can use your own independent behavioral records (text exchanges or online comment threads that have been screenshot, transcribed, and anonymized work best for this purpose).

3. The standardized prompt set

Provided in full at OSF. The prompts must be used as written. They must not be modified to include expected scores, researcher interpretations, or theoretical framing. The AI system must encounter the behavioral record and the scoring criteria without any indication of what the scores are expected to be.

4. At least two AI systems

Minimum: two independent large language models from different organizations. Recommended: Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), and Gemini (Google). Note the model version and date of each session, as models update and version differences may affect outputs.

Behavioral Record Submission Format

Prepare the behavioral record as follows before submitting to the AI systems:

Replace all names with role designations. The person whose cognition is being scored is Subject. The other party is Researcher or Author. Other participants are designated by role (Commenter A, Commenter B, etc.).

Include timestamps where available. The temporal sequence of the exchange is part of the behavioral record. A verdict issued before the exchange concludes is a different behavioral signature than a verdict issued after.

Include the full exchange. Do not summarize, paraphrase, or select excerpts. The AI system must have access to the complete record to score context integration and updating rate accurately.

Label the record clearly at the top: BEHAVIORAL RECORD FOR AST BATTERY SCORING, followed by the platform, date, and approximate duration of the exchange.

Do not include any interpretive framing, prior scores, or theoretical context in the behavioral record document. The record is raw data. The scoring instrument is the analytical lens. They must be kept separate.

The Standardized Prompt Set

PROMPT 1: Instrument Introduction

Use this prompt first, before submitting the behavioral record.

“I am going to ask you to score a behavioral record using a published research instrument. Before I share the record, I need you to read and confirm you understand the scoring criteria.

The instrument is the AST Closed-System Cognition Battery, developed within Autistic Standpoint Theory (Snow, 2026). It measures five behavioral proxies, each scored on a scale of 0 to 4, where 0 indicates a fully open-system response and 4 indicates a fully closed-system response. The composite score is the sum of all five proxy scores, with a maximum of 20.

Here are the five proxies and their scoring criteria:

P1 — Ambiguity Tolerance

Assesses the subject's capacity to hold uncertainty without premature categorical resolution. P3 — Cognitive Updating Rate

Assesses the speed and completeness with which new evidence revises the subject's prior model. Score of 0: rapid, thorough updating in response to new information. Score of 4: zero model revision across the full exchange regardless of new information received.

P4 — Threat Salience Bias

Assesses the degree to which threat-consistent interpretations are weighted over threat-disconfirming ones. Score of 0: balanced processing in which disconfirming evidence is weighted appropriately. Score of 4: systematic processing of all new information through a fixed threat model, including behaviors that extend the threat response to external audiences.

P5 — Linguistic Network Density

Assesses the richness and differentiation of the semantic field the subject uses to process and respond to relational and epistemic experience. Score of 0: rich, associative, multi-dimensional semantic field capable of holding complexity. Score of 4: collapse to a small number of fixed categories under pressure, with loss of relational and contextual vocabulary.

Critical scoring rules:

— Score each proxy independently based only on observable behavior in the record.

— Do not infer motives, internal states, or attributes beyond what the record explicitly shows.

— Intermediate scores (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0) are permitted.

Running the Protocol

Step 1. Prepare the behavioral record according to the submission format above.

Step 2. Open a fresh session in each AI system. Do not use sessions that have prior context about AST, the case study, or the researcher.

Step 3. Run Prompts 1 through 3 in sequence in each system. Do not skip the confirmation steps. The confirmation step ensures the AI has processed the criteria before encountering the record.

Step 4. Record the scores and rationales from each system in the reporting template below.

Step 5. Optionally run Prompt 4 to test consistency within each system.

Step 6. Calculate convergence across systems. Compare each system's proxy scores against each other and against the published scores from the original case study.

Step 7. Report on OSF (Open Science Framework) according to the disclosure standard below.

Disclosure Standard

Every replication report must include:

The full name and version of each AI system used, and the date of each session. Models update, and version differences can affect outputs. A replication run on an earlier model version is not directly comparable to one run on a later version without noting this.

Whether any system instructions, pre-prompting, or custom GPT configurations were used beyond the standardized prompt set. The protocol requires that the prompts be used as written. Any modification must be disclosed and the reason given.

Whether the replicator had prior familiarity with the case study or the AST framework before running the protocol. Prior familiarity does not disqualify a replication but must be disclosed.

Whether the AI systems produced any notable meta-behaviors during the session: refusals, requests for clarification, expressions of uncertainty about the scoring criteria, or apparent inconsistencies between prompts. These are data.

What Convergence Means and What It Does Not Mean

Convergent scores across independent AI systems are a validity signal. They indicate that the behavioral patterns the battery is designed to detect are present and detectable in the record by independent pattern-matching systems with no shared training pipeline and no shared motivation.

Convergence does not mean the scores are definitively correct in an absolute sense. It means that the observable behavioral patterns in the record are sufficiently consistent and legible that independent systems applying the same criteria identify them reliably. This is a meaningful epistemological claim. It is not the same claim as traditional peer review, and it should not be represented as such.

Divergence between systems is not a protocol failure. It is a finding. If systems diverge significantly on a particular proxy, that divergence may indicate that the behavioral evidence for that proxy score is ambiguous, that the proxy definition requires refinement, or that different training distributions weight certain behavioral patterns differently. All of these are useful data for the ongoing development of the instrument.

What this protocol cannot do is validate the theoretical framework that produced the battery. It can confirm that the behavioral patterns the battery identifies are present and reliably detectable. Whether those patterns mean what AST says they mean is a theoretical question that requires engagement with the framework, not replication of the scores.

Why This Matters Beyond This Research

This protocol is designed to be used on any behavioral record, not only AST case studies.

Any researcher working outside institutional infrastructure, any scholar whose standpoint position creates access barriers to traditional peer review, any practitioner who wants to apply a systematic behavioral analysis to a documented exchange, can use this protocol to produce findings that are transparent, replicable, and independently verifiable without requiring credentialed gatekeepers.

The requirement is not institutional access. It is a clear instrument, a complete behavioral record, and the willingness to report the results honestly including the divergences.

That is a lower barrier than traditional peer review. It is also a more honest one for the kinds of knowledge this research produces. The validity claim being made here is not that expert reviewers have approved the interpretation. It is that the observable behavioral patterns are present and detectable by independent systems that have no stake in the outcome.

For research produced from within the systems it analyzes, that is the more epistemologically defensible claim to make.

The central theoretical challenge within modern Western science is the persistent fragmentation of its explanatory frameworks. Physical systems are described via general relativity and quantum mechanics, which remain mathematically incompatible; meanwhile, biological organisms, cognitive processes, and social structures are relegated to separate, non-communicating levels of analysis.

The research program of Isha Sarah Snow diagnoses this fragmentation not as an unavoidable consequence of natural complexity, but as a cognitive and linguistic artifact of the Western intellectual tradition. By identifying the “intrinsic-property assumption” or the grammatically reinforced belief that entities possess definite, objective properties independent of relational context as a culturally localized bias, Snow’s research constructs a scale-invariant relational ontology.

W.E. = We-space Emergence

• Healthy “YOU” (attachment) and healthy “I” (differentiation) can only successfully emerge once a secure, coherent “We-space” has been established.

Behavior does not live inside a person. This is the claim ABA cannot afford to take seriously, and it is the claim that, once you actually sit with it, makes ABA's entire methodology collapse.

Applied Behavior Analysis treats behavior as something that originates inside the individual organism and can therefore be modified by applying the right stimuli to that organism. But behavior is a field phenomenon. It arises between nervous systems, bodies, environments, and other agents, in the relational space where they meet. You cannot locate a storm inside one air molecule. The storm is what happens when multiple elements interact at a systems level. Behavior works the same way. It is communication. Behavior is what an organism-environment relationship does, not what an organism has.

The Individual as Ideological Artifact: Field Emergence, Colonial Cognition, and the Reproduction of Abuse

The core argument against ABA and its extension to systemic abuse:

ABA treats behavior as something that originates inside the individual and can therefore be modified by applying stimuli to that individual. But if behavior is actually a field phenomenon, something that emerges between organisms in shared relational space, then ABA is not just ineffective. It is categorically misapplied science.

Behavior does not live in a person. It arises in the relational field, the dynamic space between nervous systems, bodies, environments, and other agents. Think of it like a weather system. You cannot locate a storm inside one air molecule. The storm is what happens when multiple elements interact at a systems level. Behavior is the same. It is what the organism-environment relationship does, not what the organism has.

When you target an individual's behavior with conditioning techniques, you are treating the symptom as though it is the unit of analysis. But the behavior was never in the individual to begin with. It was co-produced by the field. So ABA does not actually address behavior. It addresses the individual's visible output while leaving the generating conditions entirely intact. This is analogous to treating a plant's yellowed leaves with paint rather than adjusting the soil, light, or water. The leaves are not the cause. They are a signal from a system.

Because ABA cannot actually modify the field, what it can do is suppress the individual's response to field conditions. This is the mechanism of harm. The autistic person is not being taught to navigate differently. They are being conditioned to not display the signals that their nervous system is generating in response to a mismatched environment. The distress remains. The expression of it is extinguished. That is not behavior modification. That is coerced masking at the level of operant conditioning, applied most intensively during the developmental window when the nervous system is most plastic and most vulnerable to learned suppression patterns.

ABA imported its framework from Skinnerian behaviorism, which was explicitly committed to treating the individual organism as the unit of analysis and excluding relational or contextual variables as unscientific. That methodological choice means ABA was built on a framework that cannot, by design, see field-level causation. It is not that ABA practitioners are applying the science wrong. It is that the science was constructed to be blind to the thing that actually matters.

The same theoretical error that makes ABA abusive is the error that underlies all systemic abuse, and it is the error that makes "aren't women also abusive" a categorically confused question.

Patriarchy operates identically at a larger scale. Dominance and subordination are not properties that individuals carry. They are emergent dynamics of a relational configuration, one that is historically produced, institutionally maintained, and neurobiologically inscribed through chronic exposure. This is not a universal or natural feature of gender itself. Historian Dawn Marsh's work on Indigenous kinship and gender systems in North America shows that the dominance-subordination structure we treat as default was a colonial imposition, not a cross-cultural constant. Many Indigenous societies organized gender relationally, through reciprocal kinship obligations rather than hierarchical ownership, and settler colonial record-keeping actively distorted and flattened those systems to fit a European model of fixed, binary, hierarchical gender. The field we now call patriarchy is not an inevitable structure of human relationship. It is a specific, historically locatable field condition that was imposed and that displaced other relational configurations where it did not previously operate.

A woman who has been conditioned by repeated threat, coercion, and structural exclusion within that imposed field is not operating from the same psychological substrate as someone who has inherited entitlement and systemic safety within it. Her nervous system is doing exactly what nervous systems do in unsafe fields: generating survival responses adapted to the actual conditions of her environment.

To call those survival responses abuse equivalent to male structural dominance is the same error as calling an autistic child's meltdown a behavior problem to be extinguished. In both cases, the signal is being misread as the source rather than as a response to field conditions the observer refuses to name.

This is why the "aren't women also" deflection is not just rhetorically bad. It is epistemologically incoherent. It treats behavior as originating in the individual, strips it of its field context, and then performs a false equivalence between a response to an unsafe field and the production of that unsafe field in the first place. Those are not the same causal position. They are not even the same level of analysis.

The feminist structural critique and the field-emergence theory of behavior are not parallel arguments. They are the same argument operating at different scales. Patriarchy is the field condition. Gendered behavior, including both domination and survival response, is what that field produces. You cannot locate the problem in the individuals it generates without committing the same categorical error that made ABA an instrument of harm.

Equivalence claims do not just erase asymmetry. They actively reproduce the field conditions that generate the asymmetry in the first place, by refusing to name the field.

The distinction between a survival response and dominance-seeking behavior is not a moral judgment applied after the fact. It is a question of directionality within the field. A survival response is reactive and field-contracting: it emerges under conditions of threat, coercion, or exclusion, and its function is to protect the organism within a field it did not create and cannot safely exit. Dominance-seeking behavior is generative and field-expanding: it emerges under conditions of safety and inherited entitlement, and its function is to extend control over the field itself, including over the conditions that determine who else gets to feel safe within it. One is a response to power. The other is the exercise of power. They can look similar in isolated moments of behavior, an outburst, a withdrawal, a sharp word, which is exactly why individualizing frameworks collapse them into the same category. But they are not occupying the same causal position in the field, and treating them as equivalent requires ignoring who has the capacity to alter the field's conditions and who is only able to respond within them.

This is also where the Heptapod language in the film Arrival becomes more than a useful metaphor for non-linear time. The film's deeper claim, the one repeated across nearly every piece of writing about it, is that the Heptapods do not experience cause and reaching toward effect the way humans bound by Newtonian, subject-verb-object grammar do. Their entire sentences exist as a single relational shape, written from both ends at once, where beginning and end inform each other rather than one producing the other. This corresponds to Lagrangian mechanics, which considers every possible path between a starting point and an endpoint and selects the one requiring the least resistance, rather than tracking a single cause pushing forward into a single effect. (authorcarlara) Louise does not gain the ability to see the future so much as she loses the grammatical compulsion to locate causation inside one isolated point in the sequence. She begins to perceive the whole field at once: her decision, her daughter, her grief, and her joy, not as effects following a cause but as a single relational shape she is already standing inside.

That is the same perceptual shift this essay is asking for, applied to behavior instead of time. Colonial grammar asks where the cause is and which single point in the sequence should be blamed. Field-emergence theory, like the Heptapod language, asks instead what shape the whole relational system is taking, and which positions within that shape have the power to bend it and which positions can only move within the bend they've been given. Louise's daughter Hannah's name, spelled identically forward and backward, is the film's own small joke about this: some things only make sense once you stop insisting they run in one direction.

The capacity to think relationally and systemically is not a neutral cognitive skill that some people happen to lack. It is a mode of perception that colonial cognition actively forecloses through linguistic-social encoding. Colonial thought is organized around the individual as the primary unit of reality, bounded, sovereign, and causally self-contained. This is not accidental. A cognitive architecture that cannot perceive fields cannot perceive the conditions that produce hierarchy, and a population that cannot perceive the conditions that produce hierarchy cannot organize against them. The individualization of behavior, pathology, and moral failure is therefore not a gap in the dominant epistemology. It is one of its central functions. When abuse is framed as the product of a bad individual rather than an emergent property of a relational field structured by power, the field is rendered invisible and therefore immutable. The abuser becomes the unit of intervention, the survivor's responses become symptoms to manage, and the generating conditions continue undisturbed. This is why colonial cognition does not merely fail to address abuse. It actively reproduces it, by making systemic perception illegible and replacing it with an endless cycle of individualizing interventions that suppress signals without ever touching the field that produces them.

This is also why the Yanomami premise matters here, not as a separate point but as the only ontology that was never confused about any of this in the first place. Western behaviorism needed a bounded, sovereign, causally self-contained individual to function, because its whole method depends on having a discrete unit to intervene on. The Yanomami never built their understanding of distress on that unit. A person, in their cosmology, is a house with many visitors, a body interpenetrated by community, forest, ancestors, and spirit, where illness and distress are read as disturbances in relationship, not malfunctions inside a sealed container.

When a Yanomami shaman diagnoses distress, the question is never what is wrong inside this person that needs to be extinguished. The question is what relationship has gone unmet, what boundary has been disturbed, what presence in the field has not yet been properly negotiated with. That is field-level causation, practiced for centuries, without ever needing the language of behaviorism to arrive at it.

ABA can not see the field because its founding science was built to be blind to it. The Yanomami never had that blindness to begin with. The difference is the colonial linguistics, which stripped relationality from culture, and subsequently our world.

Development doesn't actually move on that clock. It moves on attunement. A person can be fifty years old and still be running the exact emotional architecture of the four-year-old who never got soothed, never got mirrored, never got the relational repair that moment needed. And a person can, at any age, finally get that repair and move through the developmental task that's been waiting, sometimes for decades, for the right relational conditions to arrive.

This is why trauma responses look the way they do. Fight, flight, freeze, fawn aren't character traits bolted onto an otherwise mature adult. They're a nervous system still located at the developmental point where attunement didn't happen, reaching for the same unresolved circumstance in body after body, situation after situation, trying to finally get through it. The body keeps the date even when the calendar doesn't.

What gets us into trouble is what happens after we notice the pattern. Instead of recognizing it as arrested development looking for its missed moment, we reach for a vocabulary that turns wounds and resentment into projection and fixes it permanently into identity: "narcissist," "abuser," "enabler." That move isn't neutral, it's grammatical, and it forecloses the very thing development requires, which is the possibility of becoming something other than what the activated moment made you. This essay traces that foreclosure through four ordinary social media posts, through feminist critiques of how that labeling moves asymmetrically through systems of power, and through Yanomami cosmology, which offers a different premise about what a body even is.

The connection between these images below shows trauma responses as developmentally arrested amygdala patterns, and colonial linguistic structures that lock people into fixed binary identities ("narcissist" as a noun-state rather than a behavior under stress) rather than relational, processual understanding, the deed-doer collapse mapping onto exactly the kind of analytic individualism my FCP critiques.

Image 1 (trauma responses chart) is a relatively standard, reasonably accurate pop-psychology breakdown of fight/flight/freeze/fawn that locates the responses in the nervous system rather than character.

Image 2 (co-regulation quote) is mainstream gentle-parenting content, not particularly load-bearing, fits a general orientation toward shared regulation and modeling over discipline.

Images 3 and 4 are a different register. "Enabling abuse is abuse" and the narcissist-projection post are not trauma-informed in the same sense as image 1. They're characterological. They take a person and assign a fixed internal nature ("narcissist," "abuser," "enabler") rather than describing a nervous-system state under stress. That's actually in tension with images 1 and 2's framework, not continuous with it. Image 1 says people get stuck in protective patterns. Image 2 shows where those protective patterns develop when modeling is absent. Images 3 and 4 flatten behavior by moralizing it and say there is a category of person who is fundamentally different in kind, whose kindness is always strategic, whose accusations are always confessions.

What these four images illustrate, read together, is exactly the mechanism the Functional Conflict Perspective names: a person stuck replaying an arrested developmental moment, dressed in the language of fixed moral categories that colonial linguistic structures hand us by default.

The trauma responses chart is accurate as far as it goes. Fight, flight, freeze, fawn are not character traits, they are amygdala states, a nervous system that didn't get attunement at the developmental moment it needed it, now living in an adult body that keeps reaching for the same unresolved circumstance trying to finally get through it. That is developmental arrest, not identity.

What's notable is the moralized perception to trauma responses, "narcissists speak the language of projection," "enabling abuse is abuse," language that does exactly what English's nominative-accusative grammar does structurally: collapses the deed into the doer, turns a behavior under threat into a fixed essence, a noun-state a person simply is rather than a pattern a person is currently caught in. That's the colonial linguistic loop. It forecloses the possibility of anyone, including the person doing the labeling, ever being something other than what they were in the moment of activation.

Imperial linguistics refers to the study of how dominant nations impose their language on subordinated communities, a phenomenon that suppresses local cultures, creates geopolitical power imbalances, and has been heavily researched in applied linguistics. FCP exposes this "divide and conquer" social strategy actively being employed by imperial forces, linguistically programmed into our culture through their non-native (artificially imposed, inorganic) colonial languages.

Feminist theory adds a necessary layer to this analysis, because it locates narcissism not merely in an individual nervous system but in the structural conditions that reward certain amygdala patterns over others depending on who is expressing them. Patriarchy itself functions as a narcissistic system in the structural sense: power without reciprocity, devaluation as a maintenance mechanism, one party's dysregulated state treated as legitimate authority while another's is pathologized.

This is the same colonial linguistic move at the level of social structure that the deed-doer collapse performs at the level of the individual sentence: a hierarchy that doesn't simply describe difference, but fixes it, and then requires the subordinated party's nervous system to absorb the cost of maintaining it.

This is also why the label moves asymmetrically. A woman developing boundaries, agency, and self-assertion after a lifetime of conditioned self-sacrifice is often performing necessary individuation, an amygdala finally getting the attunement it didn't receive, yet that same behavior gets named "narcissistic" precisely because it disrupts the reciprocity-free arrangement the system depends on. Meanwhile, actual dominance-seeking behavior can hide inside the language of care or moral superiority and escape the label entirely, because the system was built to protect it.

None of this happens at the level of conscious strategy for most people. It lives in the amygdala, expressed unconsciously, the nervous system reaching for whatever script, therapeutic or accusatory, structural or individual, is closest at hand in the moment of activation. The grammar of blame and the grammar of healing are often spoken by the same person within the same week, because both are downstream of the same unresolved developmental terrain, just filtered through whichever cultural permission structure is available to them in that moment.

The ways that indigenous peoples view the body, mind, and environment as a single relational continuum, rather than as separate domains to be diagnosed, managed, and corrected independently, offer a fundamentally different starting point for understanding distress than the individualizing frameworks Western psychology inherited from colonial science.

For the Yanomami people, the physical body and mental well-being are not viewed as isolated, individualistic entities. Instead, they are deeply interconnected with their community, the rainforest ecosystem, and the spiritual realm.The concept of the body and mind as a "house with many visitors" aligns closely with shamanic and traditional indigenous ontologies, though in specific Yanomami shamanism, the body is seen more precisely as an architectural space that houses multiple dimensions of existence.

In Yanomami shamanism, the shaman's body is transformed into a cosmic body, a micro-cosmos that mirrors the universe.

The Yanomami "body as house with many visitors" reframes the amygdala material. Western trauma language, even when it correctly locates fight/flight/freeze/fawn in the nervous system rather than character, still treats the body as a sealed, individual container that malfunctions and needs repair. The Yanomami cosmology treats the body as porous from the start, a dwelling that spirits, ancestors, forest, and community pass through and inhabit. Distress isn't a malfunction inside a closed system, it's an "uncontrolled bodily transformation" from improper relations with what's outside the self.

What we call a "trauma response" stuck on repeat, an amygdala pattern replaying an old unresolved moment, could be reframed through this lens not as a broken individual mechanism but as something like an uninvited or unintegrated visitor in the house, a presence that hasn't been properly negotiated with, the way a Yanomami shaman would diagnose and treat a disturbance through relationship and ritual rather than through individual pathology or fixed diagnostic category.

That would also extend the patriarchy-as-system argument one layer further. If the body itself is relational and porous rather than discrete, then the colonial linguistic move of fixing a person into a category like "narcissist" isn't just a grammatical error, it's a category error about what a body even is. It assumes a sealed individual unit that simply has bad traits, when the cosmology I am working from says distress is always about relationship and boundaries, never a static internal property.

The Yanomami model offers something more honest about what bodies actually are. Not sealed units that malfunction and need correcting, but houses with many visitors, porous, relational, always in negotiation with what's outside them. Distress, in that frame, isn't a fixed trait to diagnose and label. It's an uninvited presence that hasn't yet been properly met. That reframing doesn't erase accountability, it relocates it, from a permanent verdict on who someone is to an ongoing question about what relationship, what attunement, what boundary has gone unaddressed.

A grammar that fixes people into permanent categories, narcissist, victim, enabler, gives us the relief of clarity and the cost of foreclosure. It tells us who someone is instead of what state they're in, and in doing so it forecloses the very possibility the trauma-informed framework was supposed to open up: that a nervous system caught in an old pattern can find its way into a new one.

Most trauma frameworks get one thing right and one thing wrong at the same time. They're right that fight, flight, freeze, and fawn aren't character flaws, they're amygdala states, a nervous system stuck replaying a moment it didn't get to finish. Where they go wrong is in what happens next, when the same culture that taught us to locate distress in the body turns around and hands us a vocabulary, "narcissist," "abuser," "enabler," that does the opposite. It takes a pattern and fixes it into a person. It collapses what someone did, under activation, into what someone permanently is.

That collapse isn't incidental. It's grammatical. English, like most colonial languages, runs on a nominative-accusative structure that treats the subject of a sentence as a stable, bounded thing performing an action on the world, rather than a relational event unfolding between bodies, histories, and environments. The deed becomes the doer. The behavior becomes the identity. And once that happens, there's no way back, no possibility that the person doing the labeling, or the person being labeled, was simply caught in an unresolved developmental moment that might resolve differently next time.

The body was never the sealed container the calendar told us it was. We inherited a fiction that said a person's age marks a finished stage, that maturity arrives on schedule, that whoever you are now is whoever you'll remain. But the body doesn't keep that calendar. It keeps the date of the last unattuned moment, and it will keep returning to that date, in fight, in flight, in freeze, in fawn, until something in the relational field finally meets it.

This is the category error underneath all the others. Not just that "narcissist" collapses a behavior into a permanent identity, not just that colonial grammar fixes the deed into the doer, but that we ever believed a body was a discrete, bounded thing to begin with, separable from the relationships, environments, and unmet moments that constitute it. The Yanomami never made that error. A body, in their cosmology, is a house with many visitors, porous by design, always in negotiation with what moves through it. Distress isn't a fixed trait inside a sealed unit. It's an unmet visitor still waiting at the door.

Age was never the developmental marker we needed. Attunement was. And attunement can arrive at any point, in any body, at any age, the moment the right relational conditions finally show up. That possibility is the whole argument. Fix a person into a category, narcissist, victim, abuser, child, adult, and you foreclose it. Recognize the body for what it actually is, a house still receiving visitors, still capable of finally answering the door, and the possibility stays open for as long as the person is alive to keep meeting it.

I never expected to make it this far. After living as an undiagnosed autistic in my early 20s, which resulted in dropping out of school four times due to burnout, the natural conclusion was that I wasn’t built for meeting the demands of this world, leading me to internalize feelings of failure and worthlessness and to apply for disability benefits, focusing on raising my family instead. I love learning and would be a lifelong student if college were free, but the demands of school on top of survival mode became too much for my neurology every time I tried.

I wish I had known about my neurology prior to having children or attempting school. Raising children can be extremely dysregulating even in the best of circumstances. Had I been informed, I could have been more proactive about obtaining the supports and services I needed, and would have made better choices. But I didn’t get a diagnosis until my mid-20’s after multiple failed college attempts. When the confirmation arrived, my assumption was that the rest of the world would treat it as a valid explanation for why life was so hard, as I had, and therefore grant me the grace it had thus far denied. It’s come as a shock to be fighting for awareness still so many decades later.

I recently realized that the world isn’t a forgiving or understanding place. I thought I could make it that way and help to improve the world by forcing it to understand and accept me, but I see now that was wrong.

Right out of high school, I majored in psychology, and, like so many drawn to the therapeutic field, was likely following an unconscious impulse to heal myself by learning how the psyche works. Original archival footage of Stanley Milgram’s 1963 obedience experiments and Dr. Harry Harlow's 1950s rhesus monkey experiments, detailing the surrogate mother setup, the concept of contact comfort, and the ethical controversies surrounding his isolation studies, fascinated me as an early college student. I had no way of knowing that my life now, two decades later, would closely resemble both studies.

Like the rhesus monkeys, I often fantasized while I was growing up about having been separated from my real “cloth” family and raised by surrogates who resembled the “wire mother” monkey. My human birth mother was cold, distant, and focused on her own trauma, leaving me to navigate the bright, loud, scary, and confusing world alone. The men she centered her life around, first my father and then a succession of boyfriends prior to a stepdad, were emotionally distant, authoritarian, punitive, and quick to anger. My brother and I were entered into a competition against each other that neither of us had signed up for, based on how we were treated. My autism wasn’t understood even though it’s highly likely both my parents were undiagnosed themselves; I had no one to model healthy emotional regulation for me, and when that started showing up in my behavior at 12, my parents started kicking me out on the street. The adult skills I was given were minimal at best and entirely insufficient. A very early pregnancy at the age of 20 led me from one abusive household into one I ended up replicating through my choice of partner and my own behaviors, modeled after what I had been raised seeing at home.

"Wherever you go, there you are"

I wish that someone had told me that if you don’t heal what’s in your shadow, you end up dating it. If I had been given the education to make better choices, I certainly would have. The social norms and assumptions in modern culture seem to assume the worst of everyone and punish us for being human. This has frequently led me to wonder what the opposite would look like. Do you also imagine a world of understanding and tolerance?

I ended up finally dropping out in my late 20s after so many failed attempts for reasons that included being chronically undersupported and without resources as a single mother, because learning and survival mode are not compatible, but of course I blamed it on my own failure as a person, because I didn’t have a name for why life was so hard yet. This was before the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study was done, and most people today still don’t understand what allostatic load is. If they did understand how the government is harming them, there would be an uprising (which is likely why our education continues to be gutted and cut).

The term allostatic load was coined by neuroendocrinologist Bruce McEwen and behavioral scientist Eliot Stellar in 1993. It refers to the physiological “wear and tear” that accumulates on the body and brain from repeated or chronic exposure to stress. When faced with stress, the body adapts by altering its baseline, a process known as allostasis. If the stress is never-ending or the body fails to properly turn off these stress responses, the cumulative toll (like elevated heart rate, cortisol spikes, or inflammation) causes damage over time. Dr. McEwen used this concept to understand why prolonged, toxic stress increases the risk of chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease and immune system dysfunction. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic or stressful early-life events (e.g., abuse, neglect, household dysfunction). Research shows that higher ACE scores are strongly linked to an elevated allostatic load in adulthood, contributing to physical and mental health issues.

The principles of allostasis and allostatic load suggest that stress may be a primary mechanism through which poverty affects child development. Poverty acts as a primary driver, triggering prolonged activation of the body’s stress response mechanisms and significantly elevating health risks over time. It is for this and many other reasons that I strongly support a Universal Basic Income, and why I criticize the United States for basing its economic system on wage slavery as a form of coercive control. Without UBI, the American Constitution will never fulfill its promise of life, liberty, and happiness. More significantly, the current economic system is acting as a tool of violence against its own citizens, restricting human development and further evolution. Shouldn’t this be considered a crime against humanity?

In retrospect, most of the things I’ve personally lived through are.

When my mother was unalived about a decade ago, and I was grieving her death, I connected the dysfunction in my marriage with how I had been treated as a child and was expelled from my family for speaking the truth and refusing to go along with the dysfunction that had been normalized. That dysfunction in my family directly relates to how stress affects child development in general. A chapter in my book, Autism in America, titled “America’s Hidden Health Crisis,” discusses this normalized dysfunction and collective developmental delay in detail.

I went back to college several years ago as a way to process my trauma, try to understand how I’d gotten into an abusive relationship, and because I wanted to help prevent domestic violence from occurring in the future for others. But I no longer believe escape is possible. Coercive control dictates our social norms, lives in our language, controls our economy, and has been normalized to the point where not only does no one question it, but people will actually get angry when you try to point out their chains to them.

It takes a massive amount of propaganda and daily gaslighting to convince yourself to adapt to an unwell society.

It’s for this reason that fitting in with recovery groups and 12-step groups has been so difficult. I eventually stopped trying to recover when I became unable to unsee the dysfunction and social distortions. I switched my major from psychology to sociology and began applying group dynamics to Jungian shadow theory after realizing that this dysfunctional system lives in all of us, to some extent, without most people being unaware of it.

Obtaining my associate’s degree was fulfilling a promise to myself by finishing what I’d started so many years ago. I was surprised by my success in school and gratefully accepted the tuition waiver and scholarships to complete my bachelor’s degree, but the clock on my eventual burnout was already ticking. Autism and allostatic load refer to the cumulative “wear and tear” on an autistic person’s body and nervous system caused by chronic, unremitting stress. It explains why autistic people frequently experience burnout, exhaustion, and physical health issues when their neurobiology is constantly forced to adapt to a world that isn't built for them.

When faced with adversity, the body adapts through a process called allostasis. However, the relentless challenges associated with low socioeconomic status (SES), such as food insecurity, poor housing quality, and daily economic hardships, prevent the body from returning to baseline. This constant overdrive leads to an accumulation of physiological risks, quantified as Allostatic Load (AL). Differences in emotional regulation and a tendency to experience sensory input more intensely leave the autistic nervous system more vulnerable to AL and trauma.

Trauma in autistic individuals is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed because the symptoms heavily overlap with autism. Both conditions can feature sensory processing issues, social withdrawal, meltdowns, and executive dysfunction. Furthermore, autistic individuals frequently develop PTSD symptoms from a wider array of life events that might not meet the traditional clinical threshold for a traumatic event (Criterion A).

Autistic individuals often carry a significantly heavier "total load" due to several overlapping factors: Sensory Overload, Social Masking (Camouflaging), Sensory Processing Differences, and Environmental Mismatch.

The daily exhaustion and trauma from forcing oneself to conform to a neurotypical society (”masking”) can cause trauma-like chronic stress.

Researchers view autistic burnout as the biological state of allostatic overload. It is not a personal failure, but rather the result of a chronically overwhelmed nervous system defaulting to a protective shutdown or freeze state. This overload frequently leads to loss of acquired skills or executive functioning, extreme fatigue, meltdowns, or physical inertia, and increased susceptibility to mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and suicidality.

I was raised in an abusive household, have never let poverty, and was in multiple abusive relationships and marriages, have had cancer, and then the resulting chemotherapy put me into early menopause. Nevertheless, I have persisted. I was proactive when I joined university to pursue my bachelor’s by attempting to obtain social support, but I was already a dead woman walking at that point; I just didn’t know it yet.

What I really wish people understood is how much more profoundly and significantly allostatic load affects women, who exhibit unique physiological responses to this stress, often experiencing greater dysregulation in neuroendocrine and immune functioning, which contributes significantly to long-term health disparities. Marginalized populations, particularly minority women, often experience accelerated biological aging due to the chronic stress of systemic inequality, a phenomenon widely studied regarding Black women in the United States. High allostatic load is also heavily prevalent in women with histories of trauma or PTSD, which can prematurely age the body and increase the future risk of cardiovascular disease.

Autistic women experience a "double vulnerability" because they are both more likely to experience traumatic events and more biologically prone to developing PTSD from them.

Research indicates that 32% to 45% of autistic adults have probable PTSD, compared to just ~4% of the general population. For autistic women and gender minorities, this rate is significantly higher. Studies show that cisgender women with autism face disproportionately higher rates of interpersonal trauma, with some clinical cohorts observing PTSD rates exceeding 90% among autistic women with histories of abuse.

Children who spend a larger proportion of their youth in poverty exhibit significantly higher allostatic load scores by adolescence. This cumulative wear and tear directly impairs cognitive functions, such as working memory, and influences long-term neural development. Long-term exposure to these stressors leads to earlier onsets of the chronic diseases typically associated with aging. Marginalized groups often face the compounding effects of structural inequality and discrimination. For instance, repeated exposure to social and economic adversity contributes to the "weathering" hypothesis, where the physiological burden on Black/African American individuals is found to be equivalent to an older biological age.

Research highlights that strong emotional support systems, responsive caregiving, and secure attachment styles can significantly buffer, and sometimes mitigate, the impact of poverty-induced allostatic load. It is for this reason that I began requesting peer support be given to me as a reasonable accommodation prior to enrolling in classes two years ago. This seemed like an obvious and simple ask to me, because my diagnosis of autism has criteria that specifically refer to social and communication difficulties. However, they denied and fought me every step of the way, and now my nervous system is deteriorating quickly.

Research highlights that strong emotional support systems, responsive caregiving, and secure attachment styles can significantly buffer, and sometimes mitigate, the impact of allostatic load.

This article argues that the developmental deficits characterizing modern life are not incidental byproducts of social complexity but the downstream consequences of a specific historical project: the deliberate destruction of relational epistemology through colonial language removal. Drawing on Autistic Standpoint Theory, polyvagal research, quantum relational ontology, and the Ubuntu philosophy of Bishop Desmond Tutu, the article traces how replacing interdependence with hierarchical individualism produced a civilization of chronic autonomic dysregulation. Bishop Tutu described Ubuntu as the understanding that we are people through other people. We cannot be fully human alone. We are made for interdependence. This is not a sentiment or a cultural preference. It is a description of how human nervous systems actually develop. The self is not a thing that pre-exists relationship and then enters into connection. The self is constituted through relational fields. What we call individual capacity is, in large part, the residue of relational history.

George Webster's work on quantum relational ontology makes this precise: relations are more fundamental than the objects they connect. The particles emerge from the symmetry, not the other way around. We assumed objects come first and relationships second. Quantum mechanics inverts this entirely. Ubuntu is not a philosophy that happens to match physics. It is the lived knowledge of what physics is now describing.

Hannah Eichler observed that when children were taken from Australian Aboriginal communities and American Indian nations, someone at the top knew exactly what they were doing. They were disconnecting children from their language and story, breaking their spiritual spine. A culture's soul and wisdom is coded into the culture's language and story. Destroy the language and you destroy the relational epistemology it carries. You replace a world organized around interdependence with one organized around the isolated, self-sufficient individual who must compete for resources and prove their worth through productivity.

This was not a side effect of colonization. It was the mechanism. Strip the relational linguistics first, install a hierarchical binary grammar in its place, and the rest follows. The colonial project did not just take land and labor. It took the cognitive and relational architecture that allowed people to understand themselves as constituted by their connections, responsible to their communities, and inseparable from the living systems they inhabited.

The capacity gap Palmer describes is the downstream consequence of a targeted destruction of Ubuntu, the deliberate severing of the relational infrastructure that made human development a collective project rather than an individual burden. The abuse, exploitation, and inequality that structure the modern world are not failures of individual morality. They are what happens when you remove Ubuntu from the operating system. You cannot exploit what you remain in genuine relation with. Colonization required, first, the ideological surgery that made other people into objects rather than relations.

II. The Onus Problem

There is a pattern in how support gets structured, even in spaces that claim to be neurodiversity-affirming. David Gray-Hammond's Six-Point Framework takes an ecological approach to autistic distress, understanding it not as something located inside the individual but as the product of nested environments that interact with a person whose needs those environments were not designed to meet.

But look at how support is still organized in practice. The courses are for professionals and families who want to understand autistic people better. The assessment toolkits are for practitioners working one-to-one with autistic clients. The frameworks help people support autistic people.

This is not a criticism of that work. It is useful work. But notice what it does not do. It does not change the environments. It trains people to navigate them. The autistic person is still the variable being managed.

Unemployment rates for neurodivergent adults in the US run 30 to 40 percent, roughly eight times the rate for non-disabled individuals. It is the overwhelming preference for support-oriented research over research framed around cause, cure, or behavior change. The question he closes with is the one this entire article is organized around: what would autism research look like if it began not with "how do we change autistic people?" but with "how do we better support autistic people in living safe, meaningful, self-directed lives?"

That question sounds simple. It is structurally radical. Because the dominant research framing, cause, cure, and behavior change, all begin from the same ontological premise: that autism is a deficit located inside the person, a problem with the individual that research should solve by correcting or eliminating the deviant characteristic. This is the colonial grammar of objects applied to neurology. It asks what is wrong with this person and how do we fix them, not what is wrong with this environment and how do we change it.

The 90% preference for support-oriented research is not simply a policy preference. It is an epistemological rejection. It is the community saying, in poll format, what the Ubuntu framework says philosophically and what quantum relational ontology says structurally: the question was always wrong. The deficit is not in the person. The deficit is in the relational and environmental conditions surrounding the person. Research that starts from the wrong question will generate solutions to a problem that does not exist while leaving the actual problem untouched.

Redford's data on what happens when institutions are built around the wrong prototype, the school exclusions, the unemployment rates, the criminalization pipeline, the masking-induced burnout, is what cause-and-cure research produces at the population level when it runs for decades without correction. It produces a civilization that has invested enormous resources in understanding and eliminating autistic neurology while investing almost nothing in building environments that do not require autistic people to pay a translation tax simply to exist in them.

The developmental debt compounds here in a specific way. Research resources are finite. Every dollar spent on finding autism's cause is a dollar not spent on building accessible employment systems. Every study designed to improve behavior change is a study not designed to reduce sensory overwhelm in schools. The onus is not just placed on autistic individuals in clinical and workplace settings. It is built into the research architecture itself, which means the solutions the field generates will reliably continue to target the person rather than the system, because that is what the questions were designed to find.

Frasard's poll is not rigorous science. He acknowledges that directly. But 321 autistic and autism-adjacent people expressing 90% consensus on where research should focus is the standpoint epistemology signal that should reorganize the field. The people with the most direct experiential knowledge of what autism is and what autistic people need are not asking for a cure. They are asking for support. The research apparatus that ignores that signal is not politically neutral. It is the onus problem operating at the level of scientific funding, question formation, and institutional priority.

What the Autistic Standpoint Theory framework adds to Frasard's observation is the causal account of why the framing got inverted in the first place. When you replace relational ontology with object ontology, when you build a civilization around isolated individuals competing in hierarchies rather than communities constituted through interdependence, the autistic nervous system's profile of strengths, including pattern recognition, intensity of focus, sensory acuity, relational honesty, and resistance to implicit social compliance, becomes legible only as a collection of deficits relative to the neurotypical prototype. The same characteristics that would be assets in a community organized around different relational values become liabilities in a world that rewards masking, social performance, and compliance with unwritten rules that were never designed with the full range of human nervous systems in mind.

The research agenda reflects this. It asks how do we make autistic people more neurotypical, which is the same question as how do we make the object conform to the prototype. The 90% are asking a different question entirely: how do we build a world in which the full range of human neurology is supported rather than sorted. That is the Ubuntu research agenda. It has been waiting for the field to catch up.

III. What the Nervous System Knows

Polyvagal theory gives us language for what happens when that displacement becomes chronic. A flexible, healthy autonomic nervous system can move through its full range of states. Ventral vagal activation supports connection, safety, and grounded engagement. Sympathetic activation mobilizes energy for response. Dorsal vagal activation conserves resources under conditions of overwhelming threat. None of these states is inherently pathological. The problem emerges when a person gets stuck, when the conditions of their life are such that the nervous system cannot find its way back to safety and begins organizing itself around chronic threat.

Feeling relaxed while being attacked by a threat would not just be unhelpful. It would cost your life. Nervous system regulation is not about achieving a permanent state of calm. It is about maintaining the flexibility to move through all states without becoming trapped in any of them. Healthy regulation means sympathetic activation when activation is needed, dorsal conservation when the system is overwhelmed, and the capacity to return to ventral connection when conditions allow.

For autistic people navigating systems that were not designed for them, chronic sympathetic or dorsal activation is not a character flaw or a developmental failure. It is a logical response to an environment that continuously signals that your natural way of being is wrong, insufficient, or disruptive. Burnout is what happens when the nervous system has been running that adaptation for too long without relief.

Jim Palmer writes that capacities develop through sustained engagement with the very conditions we are learning to carry. That is true in environments that offer enough safety for development to happen. It is not true in environments where the conditions themselves are the source of chronic threat. You cannot develop the capacity for uncertainty by facing uncertainty while simultaneously being told that your nervous system's responses to uncertainty are the problem. That is not development. That is managed suppression.

The Polyvagal Critique: What the Anatomy Debate Misses

Marta Smigielska's critique of polyvagal theory is worth taking seriously. Her core concern is that PVT took real physiological observations and wrapped them in an anatomical and evolutionary framework that the evidence does not support, and that practitioners owe clients honesty about that distinction. The 2026 consensus paper from 39 international experts concluding that each basic physiological assumption of the polyvagal theory is untenable is a legitimate scientific contribution.

Dr. Olivia Fisher adds a second vector. Engaging with Kotler and colleagues' paper "The body does not keep the score," she argues that the mechanism Van der Kolk proposed, traumatic memory stored somatically in muscles and body tissues, has been superseded by a predictive coding model in which trauma impacts arise from errors in threat prediction rather than somatic storage. Ubuntu-based healing traditions organized recovery from trauma and dysregulation around communal ceremony, relational re-attunement, and collective witnessing rather than individual treatment. Indigenous healers were not guessing. They were working from intergenerational observation of what actually restores people. What they consistently found, regardless of the specific cultural form it took, was that regulation is relational before it is individual. You get people back into their bodies through safe community, rhythmic co-participation, and the felt experience of belonging.

The most important response to Fisher's piece did not come from a clinician. It came from a DID system identifying as 1700 members who experienced familial trafficking and organized extreme abuse. They describe occipital neuralgia from sustained physical injury inflicted in childhood, irritable bowel syndrome from years of violation, an alter who stutters while no other alters do, alters who experience no pain during migraines the body is having. This testimony does not resolve the mechanism debate. But it demonstrates exactly what Fisher's predictive coding model and Smigielska's neuroanatomical critique both risk missing: that the body and the self under extreme relational violation do not behave according to the clean categories that either somatic storage or predictive coding, as mechanistic models, can fully capture.

What they wrote bears repeating: what they need is not another study that redetermines another form of telling them how they suffer, but for someone to actually listen to victims first, understand all aspects of what they experience, and then look for a way to respect what actually happened instead of looking for a way to redefine them. That is the standpoint epistemology argument in survivor language. And it is exactly right.

Smigielska argues that every credible-seeming pseudoscientific framework makes the next one easier to accept and makes it harder for people to distinguish genuine science from well-packaged nonsense. This is a real concern. But the same argument, applied without the cultural correction, also makes it easier to dismiss the relational and somatic knowledge that non-Western traditions spent centuries developing, on the grounds that it has not been validated by the institutional system that spent the same centuries excluding those traditions from the conversation.

Hannah Eichler's observation about colonial child removal confirms this from the negative direction. They targeted language and community because these are the actual infrastructure of nervous system regulation. They did not need Porges's mechanism to identify the correct target. Porges may have gotten the anatomy wrong. The cultures that practiced Ubuntu-based healing got the functional reality right. Those are separable questions. The critics answer one of them and leave the other entirely untouched.

IV. The Hierarchy as Output

David Younger's analysis of the invisible disability hierarchy names the product of exactly the system this article has been describing. He identifies six tiers, from terminal illness at the top through degenerative and static physical disabilities, into invisible-but-diagnosed conditions, neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions, and finally the contested and acquired conditions at the bottom, where people are routinely accused of malingering and must fight just to be believed. Sympathy flows downward, and accommodations follow sympathy.

This hierarchy is not an accident and it is not a failure of individual empathy. It is the direct output of the colonial binary grammar this article has been tracing.

When you replace a relational ontology with an object-based, hierarchical one, you change how legitimacy gets evaluated. In a relational world organized around Ubuntu, the question is: what does this person need in order to remain in full relation with the community? In an object-based, hierarchical world, the question becomes: is this person's claim real enough to warrant cost? The hierarchy Younger describes is the answer that system produces. It ranks bodies by the degree to which their condition can be externally verified, visually confirmed, and medically certified in ways that leave no room for doubt or interpretation.

Notice what is doing the work here. The ranking is organized around how much proof the system can extract from the body itself, how much the body's condition can be made to perform its own legitimacy for an external observer who does not start from a position of belief. This is the logic of colonial epistemology applied to flesh. It does not ask what the person experiences. It asks what the institution can verify. And it places the burden of verification entirely on the person seeking accommodation.

The Structural Architecture of Exclusion

Redford's research confirms what the hierarchy analysis predicts at the institutional level. The standard classroom rewards compliance, speed, sustained attention under externally imposed structure, verbal participation on demand, and output in standardized formats at standardized intervals. Students who diverge accumulate institutional verdicts. They are labeled disruptive, lazy, inattentive, difficult, behind, told in dozens of ways before anyone names it that their way of being in the world is a problem to be corrected.

On average, autistic women wait ten years from first presenting to mental health services before receiving a diagnosis. That decade is not spent without symptoms. It is spent being misread. The diagnostic tools themselves, developed and validated primarily using male samples, are structurally less sensitive to how autism presents in women and girls. The prototype shaped not only institutions but our understanding of neurodivergence itself. The system does not just exclude neurodivergent people from institutions. It excludes them from the research that defines what institutions should look like.

The criminalization pipeline is the most damning evidence. Trace the sequence as a lived experience. A child cannot sit still in a classroom not designed for their nervous system. They are labeled disruptive, disciplined, excluded, pushed out of the educational pathways that would otherwise support transition into adult life. They reach adulthood without a diagnosis, without credentials, without the social capital those pathways provide. More than two-thirds of confined youth in the US meet criteria for neurodivergence. Sixty percent are diagnosed with ADHD, compared to 11% nationally. The system built a school-to-prison pipeline and was surprised to find it full of neurodivergent people.

Performance of Inclusion

Organizations have discovered that neurodiversity is good marketing. The language of inclusion has proliferated: awareness days, DEI statements, job postings describing companies as neurodiversity-friendly. And behind the language: the same rigid interviews, the same open-plan offices, the same performance reviews rewarding social fluency over outcomes. Researchers have named this performative neuro-inclusion. It looks good on paper but fails to shift the environment.

Accommodations fit this pattern. They are framed as generosity. They are not. They are correction, partial repairs to a design that was wrong. Framing correction as generosity keeps power with the system and makes basic access feel like a gift the institution can choose to withdraw. Inclusion that leaves power untouched is not inclusion. It is reputation management, and it actively harms neurodivergent people by making the problem appear solved.

Younger names the collective consequence: as long as tier 2 can look at tier 6 and think at least people believe I am disabled, the community is not organizing together. People are fighting each other for scraps of sympathy and accommodation rather than demanding systemic change. When nervous systems are chronically dysregulated by environments of threat and resource scarcity, and when the only available cognitive framework is binary and hierarchical, the comparative suffering logic follows necessarily. The hierarchy gets internalized not because people are individually cruel but because the system has installed a threat-state in everyone navigating it and then provided a hierarchy as the only available map.

V. Substance Use and the Wrong Measurement

Nowhere is the onus problem more visible, or more consequential, than in how we approach substance use and recovery.

The dominant recovery framework measures success by abstinence. It locates the problem inside the individual, in their choices, their willpower, their moral character, or increasingly their neurobiology, and it measures progress by whether the individual can stop using. Treatment is something the individual does to themselves, or has done to them. Twelve-step models center personal inventory and personal accountability. Medical models add pharmaceutical management to the same individual-focused logic. Even harm reduction, which is often framed as more compassionate, still tends to organize around managing the individual's use rather than transforming the conditions that made use a rational adaptive strategy in the first place.

The suffering that drives most substance use is not a personal moral failure. It is a human struggle produced by real conditions: poverty, trauma, chronic dysregulation, disconnection, and the specific kind of pain that comes from trying to function in a system that was not built for you and that tells you daily that your failure to thrive is your own fault.

Substance use, in the AST framework, is often an attempted deinstallation of colonial code, an effort, however costly, to interrupt the chronic threat state that the system has installed in the nervous system and called normal. The substances are not the problem. They are a solution to a problem the system refuses to acknowledge it created.

When someone in chronic dorsal collapse discovers that a substance briefly restores sympathetic energy or ventral connection, that is not irrational. That is a nervous system finding the regulation it was never taught and never given the conditions to develop. The tragedy is not that the solution was found. It is that the solution is destructive, and that the same system that created the conditions for the dysregulation then criminalizes, pathologizes, or moralizes the coping strategy while doing nothing about the conditions.

Recovery frameworks that measure success by abstinence without addressing the relational and environmental conditions driving the dysregulation are using the wrong unit of analysis. They are measuring whether the individual can stop, not whether the conditions that made starting reasonable have changed. They are asking people to develop regulation capacity in the absence of the relational safety that makes regulation development possible.

The Ubuntu framework makes this visible immediately. You cannot be fully human alone. If the conditions of your life have severed the connections through which nervous system regulation is co-regulated and transmitted, then telling you to individually manage your way to sobriety is not treatment. It is abandonment dressed as support. Recovery that works starts with connection, safety, and the restoration of relational infrastructure, not because that is spiritually preferable, but because that is how nervous systems actually regulate.

VI. The Colonial Grammar of Deficit

The language we have for disability, neurodivergence, and developmental difference was largely built by people whose nervous systems and ways of knowing were treated as the default. That default was never neutral. It encoded a particular relational logic, a particular sensory range, a particular set of assumptions about what counts as competent, communicative, or capable.

This is what the colonial linguistic project accomplished at the level of individual cognition. By replacing relational epistemologies with individualist, hierarchical, binary ones, it created the conceptual conditions under which some humans could be categorized as less than, as burdens, as deficient, as problems to be managed. Ubuntu cannot produce eugenics. You cannot exterminate what you understand yourself to be constituted by. Eugenics requires, first, the grammar of objects rather than relations, the ability to see other humans as separate things whose existence can be evaluated for its cost and benefit to the system.

The collective dysregulation across generations, the way trauma compresses the attractor states available to individuals and communities, is part of what produces the ideological rigidity that makes eugenics, fascism, and the casual disposal of disabled lives possible. When nervous systems are chronically stuck in threat responses and the only available frameworks are binary and hierarchical, the result is exactly what we see: the sorting of human beings into worthy and unworthy, burden and asset, normal and deviant.

This is not a metaphor. Chronic sympathetic or dorsal activation literally narrows the cognitive range available. Threat responses are necessarily more binary, more categorical, faster, and less nuanced than the processing available in ventral vagal states. A civilization organized around chronic relational disconnection will, structurally, produce more binary and hierarchical thinking at the population level. The ideology of hierarchy is not just taught. It is the cognitive output of a collectively dysregulated nervous system that has lost its relational co-regulation infrastructure.

This is why Orwell's observation, that love creates a world those in power cannot control, is more than poetic. Genuine relational connection, the kind that restores ventral vagal access and makes more complex, nuanced, non-binary cognition possible, actively undermines the conditions under which hierarchical control systems operate. You cannot easily manipulate, divide, and extract from people who remain in genuine Ubuntu relation with each other. The restoration of relational infrastructure is not just personally healing. It is politically destabilizing to systems built on extraction and control.

Fisher's observation about workplace trauma is the domestic version of the same argument: it is so much easier for upper management to implement yoga than to actually change the system in the workplace that is causing trauma for employees. The individual adaptation intervention is always easier than structural change, because structural change requires locating accountability in the institution rather than in the person. But easier is not the same as effective. The translation tax does not go away because the employee learned to breathe differently. The sensory overload does not resolve because the autistic person developed more tolerance. The onus is misplaced, and misplaced onus is not a minor administrative error. It is the mechanism by which systems perpetuate the conditions that harm the people they claim to serve.

Language, Brain, and the Neurological Record of Colonial Assault

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, or linguistic relativity, holds that a person's perception of the world and how they experience it is determined and influenced by the language they speak. Every language is, as Whorf described it, a vast pattern-system in which are culturally ordained the forms and categories by which the personality not only communicates but analyzes nature, notices or neglects types of relationship and phenomena, channels reasoning, and builds the house of consciousness.

This is not a soft claim about cultural preference. It is a claim about the architecture of cognition itself. Language does not merely express thought. It organizes the categories through which thought becomes possible. Strip a language and you strip the relational categories it carries. Install a different language and you install a different cognitive architecture, including a different set of assumptions about what relations exist, what categories matter, and what counts as normal.

The neurological evidence makes this precise in a way Whorf could not have anticipated. Broca's area, located in the left frontal lobe, controls speech production and the formation of complex syntax. Wernicke's area governs language comprehension, the understanding of meaning in spoken and written words. These are the two primary regions through which language shapes and is shaped by thought. They are also, crucially, the regions where autistic neurology shows the most consistent difference: reduced connectivity between Broca's and Wernicke's areas, lower Broca's activity affecting spontaneous speech and complex sentence formation, altered Wernicke's activation producing what neurotypical assessors describe as poorly integrated language processing.

What this means, read through the Sapir-Whorf lens, is that the autistic brain is not processing the colonial language in the way the colonial language was designed to be processed. The reduced Broca's-Wernicke's connectivity is not a malfunction relative to some neutral standard. It is a difference in how meaning is made, how syntax is organized, how language moves from comprehension to expression. When that difference is encountered by a system built entirely around one language-processing style, the result is not mutual adjustment. The result is the deficit diagnosis.

The boarding school photographs from Phoenix Indian School, 1891 to 1990, document this logic applied with deliberate brutality. Children were slapped, had their mouths washed with lye soap, and were starved for speaking their language, practicing their religion, or displaying any behavior indicating resistance to assimilation. Arizona alone had 47 schools operating on this model. The sign in a 1914 boarding school photograph reads simply: "Please do not speak Eskimo." So far 53 burial sites have been found at these schools.

This was not incidental cruelty. It was targeted neurological intervention. The punishment for speaking your own language is a punishment for using your own Broca's area in its native pattern. The forced installation of English syntax and English categorical grammar is a forced reorganization of the cognitive architecture that Whorf describes as the house of consciousness. The colonial school system understood, at the practical level, what the neuroscience now confirms: that language is not a neutral communication tool layered over thought. Language is thought. Kill the language and you restructure the brain.

The Maori word for autism is takiwatanga, which translates as "in their own time and space." This term is considered a positive description in Maori culture, highlighting that people with autism may have their own unique pace and rhythm. The contrast with the English diagnostic term could not be more complete. Autism Spectrum Disorder encodes disorder as a definitional feature. Takiwatanga encodes a relational quality, a particular way of inhabiting time and space. One term locates the problem in the person. The other locates the person in a relational field and describes how they move through it. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis predicts exactly this: the language you use to name something shapes how you think about it, what interventions you design, and what counts as an acceptable outcome. A civilization whose language for autism is takiwatanga will not build compliance-training programs. It will ask how to organize community so that people in their own time and space are supported rather than corrected.

Marcus Garvey, speaking in 1937, named the deepest implication of this entire chain: "We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind." The colonial linguistic project did not just constrain behavior. It colonized the cognitive architecture through which people understand themselves, their possibilities, and their relations. Mental emancipation is not a metaphor. It is the project of recovering the relational epistemology, the language categories, the cognitive architecture, and the house of consciousness that the boarding school system spent a century systematically destroying.

Autistic Standpoint Theory begins from the position that autistic ways of knowing, including the atypical Broca's-Wernicke's connectivity, the different sensory integration, the relational directness, the resistance to implicit social compliance, are not deficits relative to a neutral standard. They are a neurological profile that the colonial language system was not built to accommodate, and that the deficit model exists to pathologize rather than to understand. The research onus argument, the disability hierarchy analysis, and the structural exclusion documentation all converge here: what is being diagnosed as disorder is, in significant part, a different relationship to a language system that was imposed rather than native, and a different cognitive architecture that the imposed system was never designed to support.

VII. Conclusions: Restoring What Was Taken

The developmental debt of modernity is real. But it was not accrued randomly. It was produced by a specific historical project that targeted relational epistemology first, installed a grammar of isolated individuals competing in hierarchies second, and then expressed surprise at the loneliness, dysregulation, and incapacity for genuine belonging that followed.

The spiritual spine that Hannah Eichler described, the one that gets broken when children are severed from their language and story, is the same spine that Palmer calls capacity and that polyvagal theory, whatever its anatomical errors, is trying to describe. It is the same infrastructure that Ubuntu names as the condition of full humanity. It was not lost to modernity. It was taken.

The evidence across the domains examined in this article points consistently toward the same conclusion. The onus is misplaced. In neurodivergent support frameworks, in disability legitimacy hierarchies, in trauma treatment models, in substance use recovery, and in the institutional design Redford maps across education, employment, healthcare, and criminal justice, the burden of adaptation is placed on the person least able to carry it in an unchanged environment. The system does not change. The individual is expected to develop sufficient capacity to endure its failure.

What would it mean to actually change the environments rather than train the people to adapt to them? It would mean designing sensory accessibility into spaces before anyone has to ask for it. It would mean building communication systems that work for a range of styles rather than one default. It would mean changing the productivity and performance metrics that measure capability while ignoring whether a person can actually inhabit their life. It would mean treating the chronic autonomic dysregulation that results from exclusion as a structural problem requiring structural responses, not a deficit requiring individual intervention. It would mean building recovery environments organized around genuine relational safety and co-regulation rather than measuring abstinence while leaving the dysregulating conditions intact.

The disability hierarchy Younger describes, the neurodivergent exclusion Redford documents, the misapplied recovery frameworks, and the polyvagal mechanism debate that misses the cultural evidence, are all expressions of the same foundational error: the substitution of object-logic for relational logic, of isolation for Ubuntu, of hierarchy for interdependence.

Getting the mechanism right matters. But mechanism without relational ontology produces more scientifically accurate individual treatment models that remain organized around adapting people to conditions that should not exist. The question is not whether individuals can develop better coping strategies for living without what was stolen from them. The question is whether we can build back the relational conditions under which human beings do not have to carry it alone.

The defining challenge is not whether the individual can become large enough to carry what was stolen. It is whether we can become communities large enough to restore what colonialism destroyed, and build institutions that start from Ubuntu rather than requiring Ubuntu's survivors to prove, in the institution's preferred format, that their need for it is real.

Neurotypicality is not a trait some people possess and others lack. It is a system, a set of encoded rules about how to speak, move, respond, and exist, that all of us absorb, because we live inside it from birth. Neurodivergence is not the opposite of neurotypicality. It is what the system never managed to fully overwrite.

That reframe shifts the question we ask. Not how far does this person deviate from normal?, but how much of this person's distress is friction between who they are and what the system demands they perform?

Neurotypical hegemony

The research is catching up. Lewis and Arday (Princeton University Press, 2025) describe neurotypical hegemony as a system that does not require coercive force. It sustains itself through ongoing reproduction, ideologies that read as common sense, norms that read as basic competence, standards that feel like just the way things work. Consented to even by those it excludes.

Grummt (Sociology Compass, 2024) goes further: neurotypicality as a structural force is what produces discrimination and the experience of disability, not the neurodivergent person.

Walters (Journal of Social Issues, 2025) traces this to Foucault directly: from the earliest categorizations of autism and ADHD, power and knowledge shaped who was named normal and who was named broken. Neurodiversity, as a movement, is the resistance to that naming.

What this literature has not yet asked is the harder question: what happens inside a person who has absorbed the system but cannot be fully absorbed by it? What does it mean to be simultaneously inside neurotypical hegemony and unassimilable to it?

The programming language hypothesis

What if neurotypicality is not just a social system but a linguistic one, operating the way a programming language operates, with syntax, expected outputs, and error states for deviation? What if it is, at its core, a code that gets installed?

Language does not just describe reality. It categorizes it, sequences it, assigns causality, determines who acts and who receives action. Neurotypical social language, the scripts, the turn-taking, the implied meanings, the rules about timing, tone, and eye contact, has syntax, expected outputs, and error states for deviation.

Autistic cognition operates outside that verbal-social layer, pattern recognition, systemic thinking, sensory processing that does not route automatically through linguistic-social encoding. What we call autistic difference may be cognition running on a different base language: one that preceded the neurotypical layer and was always there.

Masking is not hiding your real self under a false one. It is running an emulator, executing neurotypical syntax on top of a native architecture. The performance works, but there is always latency. Always overhead.

Hennekam, Kulkarni, and Beatty (2025) found that neurodivergent people internalize neurotypical norms so thoroughly that the performance stops being purely external. It becomes partially real. The emulator does not just sit on top. It integrates. Some of the code runs natively after long enough.

But the base language does not disappear. It gets layered over.

The hardware underneath the code

If neurotypicality is a linguistic operating system, the next question is what the hardware looks like in autistic brains, why the emulation carries the cost it does. Neuroimaging research offers a partial answer, one more clarifying than the deficit framing that has dominated clinical literature.

Broca's area, in the left inferior frontal gyrus, handles expressive, socially-contextualized language: speech calibrated to social context, deploying pragmatics, retrieving context-dependent meaning. Wernicke's area, in the posterior superior temporal gyrus, handles receptive language: decoding incoming speech into semantic content. In neurotypical language processing, these two regions coordinate in a continuous loop that makes social language automatic.

In autistic brains, that loop runs differently. fMRI research shows that autistic adults demonstrate decreased activation in Broca's area and increased activation in Wernicke's area during language tasks. The system works harder to receive and decode language than to produce it in socially-legible form. Even where connectivity between the two regions is preserved, functional integration is reduced, they are connected but not efficiently coordinating.

The most socially costly differences in autism are not grammatical. They are pragmatic: the social use of language, including implied meaning, irony, context-dependence, and the unspoken rules of conversational timing. Broca's area and its prefrontal connections are specifically implicated in this layer, not the words, but the social code embedded in the words.

Neurotypical social language is not just lexical and syntactic. It carries contextual rules, social hierarchies, implied expectations, and relational positioning. It is language that signals membership, not just meaning. The neural architecture responsible for producing that layer, Broca's area and its prefrontal connections, develops atypically in autistic cognition from early childhood.

This is not a failure of language. It is a mismatch between a native architecture and an imported code.

The autistic brain runs a different relationship between reception and production, one that is often stronger in systematic, pattern-based, and semantic processing (the Wernicke-dominant side) and less automatic in socially-encoded, pragmatically-calibrated output (the Broca-dominant side). The system reads meaning. It does not automatically generate the social performance that neurotypical culture has built around meaning.

The cultural disconnect is not incidental. It is architectural. We can learn the code. Many of us learn it well. But we are always, at some level, translating. And translation is not free.

Both, at once

This is what I lived for the first four decades of my life, before diagnosis. I had absorbed enough of the system to function inside it. The scripts, the timing, the social parsing, real, learned, mine in some real sense. That absorption happened to me and I do not discount it.

But underneath it, and sometimes through it, was something that never assimilated. A way of processing the world that preceded the system and outlasted every attempt to normalize it. Not a deficit. Not a deviation. A different base language, running continuously, costly to suppress.

The distress was not the neurodivergence. The distress was the cost of the emulation.

Bourdieu's concept of habitus, the internalized social grammar that feels like instinct because it was absorbed early and completely, comes close to naming this. For neurotypical people, the social language and the habitus align. For neurodivergent people, the habitus was built under pressure, from the outside in, onto a substrate it was never native to. The substrate kept running. It always does.

The gap the theory fills

The existing literature has named neurotypicality as a system. Chapman (2022) challenges the idea that neurotypical minds are a neutral baseline. Walker (2014) named neurodiversity as a natural form of human variation. Lewis and Arday named it hegemony.

None of them theorize what it means to be simultaneously inside that system and unassimilable to it, to have absorbed the norms and remained, underneath them, yourself.

That is the move I am making here, within Autistic Standpoint Theory: neurotypicality and neurodivergence are not opposites. They are layers. The system runs in all of us. In some of us, something older runs beneath it, something the system got into but never got all the way through.

If you have ever felt like you learned to pass but never quite belonged, this is the name for that experience.

You were not broken. You were running an emulator on hardware it was never designed for.

And the base language was always still there.

The Source Code

The neurotypical operating system was not written in a neutral language. It was written in one designed to install the ego as the origin point of every sentence, every thought, and every self.

In the previous essay, I argued that neurotypicality functions as an operating system: a linguistic code, installed during socialization, that runs in the background of all of us. Some people run it natively. Others, myself included, learned to emulate it on hardware that was never designed for it. The emulation works. It is never free.

This essay goes one level deeper. Because if neurotypicality is an operating system, the question is: what language was it written in? What is the source code underneath the interface?

The answer is not abstract. It is traceable, datable, and colonial. And it has a specific effect on Broca's area that no amount of behavioral intervention will fix, because the problem is not in the behavior. It is in the grammar.

The grammar encodes the self

English requires a subject in every sentence. Not as a preference. As a rule. You cannot construct a grammatically complete English sentence without one. Even when there is no meaningful agent, English invents one: "it is raining." What is the "it"? Nothing. It is a grammatical placeholder, a mandatory ego-slot that the language demands be filled before the sentence can proceed.

This is not how most of the world's languages work, and it is not how the world's oldest surviving languages work. Early Biblical Hebrew was verb-based: the subject was implied inside the verb itself, not foregrounded as a separate discrete entity. Tamil, one of the oldest living languages at approximately 5,000 years old, uses kinship-based pronouns and flexible word order, with no separate "I" foregrounded at the subject position. Body, spirit, land, and cosmos are encoded as a single continuum. Ojibwe/Anishinaabemowin is animacy-based and verb-based rather than subject-based, centering relationships over individual actions. The speaker places themselves last in phrasing.

In each of these languages, the self does not precede the relationship. It arises within it.

Linguist Anna Wierzbicka (1997) documents that English is among the most egocentric languages globally, noting that languages across Indigenous, Asian, and African contexts do not privilege the isolated "I" the way English does. This is not a feature of human language. It is a feature of a specific and historically recent set of languages that colonial expansion installed as the global standard.

The shift is traceable. Biblical Hebrew moved from VSO (verb-subject-object) toward SVO (subject-verb-object) under Persian and Hellenistic influence. The subject, previously embedded in the verb, was extracted, foregrounded, and made discrete. Sanskrit, structurally designed to encode hierarchy and individual identity, spread through Aryan colonial displacement of Dravidian populations whose native languages, including Tamil, encoded relationality as the ground state of selfhood. Proto-Indo-European languages shifted from SOV toward SVO across centuries of empire. English, the language of the most recent and most globally total colonial project, is the endpoint of that trajectory: a language where the isolated self is mandatory syntax.

"I am because we are" became "I am I, and you are you." That is not a philosophical shift. It is a grammatical one. And grammar shapes cognition in ways that run below the level of conscious thought.

What word order reveals about the brain

Here is what the linguistics research shows, and why it matters for this argument.

About 40% of the world's languages are SVO. About 40% are SOV (subject-object-verb, as in Japanese, Tamil, and Latin). The remaining 20% use other orders. SVO is not the human default. It is one option, and the evidence suggests it is not the most cognitively primary one.

When adult speakers of SVO languages are asked to communicate using gesture instead of speech, bypassing their learned syntactic system entirely, they default to SOV order. Speakers of English, Mandarin, and Spanish all do this. SOV appears to be what the brain produces when no acquired grammar is running. It is closer to the pre-linguistic conceptual structure of events: agent, then patient, then action. The full scene is assembled before the predicate arrives.

SVO imposes a specific processing sequence: the action is named before the receiver of the action is identified. The listener holds the verb in working memory while waiting for the object to complete the meaning. SOV resolves the full event picture before naming what happened. For a processing system that is strong in semantic completeness and holistic pattern recognition, SOV is architecturally closer to home. SVO requires more Broca-mediated real-time integration work.

Neuroimaging research shows that autistic language processing involves reduced activation in Broca's area and relatively stronger activation in Wernicke's area during language tasks. Broca's area handles expressive, socially-contextualized, syntactically integrated language production. Wernicke's area handles semantic decoding. The autistic processing profile is stronger in the semantic layer and less automatic in the syntactic-social integration layer. Which means the language that demands the most real-time Broca work is precisely the language that costs the most to run on autistic hardware.

That language is English. That cost is not neurological deficit. It is architectural mismatch.

The ego as mandatory syntax

But the word order is only part of the story. The deeper issue is what the subject position encodes.

In English, every sentence begins with an explicit, foregrounded, grammatically mandatory self. The "I" is not contextual. It is not relational. It does not arise from its connections. It simply is, placed first, before anything else can be said. This is the linguistic encoding of a particular model of selfhood: isolated, discrete, prior to relationship, the origin point of all action and meaning.

This model was not always dominant. It was installed.

In Exodus 3:14, the phrase rendered in English as "I Am That I Am" contains no separate "I" in the original Hebrew. The first person is implied inside the verb "to be." The self arises in the act, not before it. Under Persian and Hellenistic colonial influence, individual moral responsibility replaced collective relational accountability. The "I" gained grammatical prominence as the ego gained philosophical primacy. These are the same event, happening at the same time, in the same direction.

Kemmerer (2012) argues that SO word order (subject before object, whether SVO or SOV) reflects the most natural way Broca's area linearizes the core conceptual components of actions: prominent, animate agents come first because they are cognitively salient. That much is universal. What is not universal is the requirement that the subject be explicit, isolated, and prior to all relationship. Verb-based languages with implied subjects make the agent cognitively primary without requiring Broca's area to construct and hold a discrete self-token before the utterance can begin.

English does require that. Every time. In every sentence. The self must be named first, held as a separate unit, and foregrounded as the grammatical origin of meaning. For autistic cognition, which the research suggests may operate closer to the pre-syntactic relational baseline, this is not a neutral requirement. It is the continuous, sentence-by-sentence demand to perform a model of selfhood that the underlying architecture does not generate automatically.

What Sapir and Whorf were pointing at

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis holds that the structure of a language shapes the cognitive processes and perceptions of its speakers. The strong version, linguistic determinism, is not well supported. But the moderate version, that language influences habitual thought patterns and the ease with which certain concepts are accessed, has substantial support.

What this means for the argument: a person who grows up speaking a language that encodes the self as relationally embedded, where the "I" is implied in the verb and kinship terms replace individual names, is habituated to a different cognitive baseline than a person raised in English. The relational self is not just a philosophical position in those languages. It is the grammar. It is what the language trains the brain to do automatically, every time a sentence is formed.

English trains the opposite. It trains the brain to construct an isolated self-token, place it first, and proceed from there. This training runs from infancy, below the level of conscious choice, through millions of repetitions. It becomes, in Bourdieu's terms, habitus: internalized so completely that it feels like instinct.

For most neurotypical speakers, the SVO ego-first syntax and the habitus align. The grammar confirms what the social training already installed: you are a discrete individual, prior to and separate from your relationships, responsible for your own actions and accountable to your own identity.

For autistic cognition, the alignment is partial at best. The grammar demands one model of selfhood. The underlying neural architecture may be operating closer to another.

The grammar is not just harder to run. It is encoding a model of selfhood that was never universal, was installed by colonial force, and conflicts with how relational cognition organizes experience from the ground up.

The Maori word for autism

The Maori word for autism is takiwatanga, derived from the phrase meaning "my/his/her own time and space." It names the experience without pathologizing it. The person occupies a different temporal and spatial relationship with the world. That is the observation. Not the deficit.

I want to hold that word next to the argument I have been building, because it points to something the neuroscience and linguistics research cannot fully name on their own. If autistic cognition operates closer to a pre-colonial relational baseline, if the neural architecture resists the installation of the ego-first SVO model, if Broca's area functions differently in ways that make the colonial linguistic overlay more costly to run, then what looks like pathology from inside the dominant system may be something else entirely from outside it.

Not a failure to acquire the code. A different relationship to it.

The Dravidian languages that Sanskrit displaced. The relational Hebrew that Greek and Roman empire overwrote. The animacy-based verb-centered languages that English colonial expansion pushed to the margins of its own speakers' lives. These were not inferior communication systems. They were encoding a different, and in many respects more neurologically primary, model of how selves relate to each other and to the world.

Autistic people did not fail to absorb the replacement. We absorbed it, as I argued in the previous essay, the way anyone absorbs a hegemonic system: partially, under pressure, at cost. But something older kept running underneath. The base language, as I called it there, was always still there.

This essay is the name for what that base language is. It is relational. It is verb-centered. It places the self in context rather than prior to it. It was spoken for tens of thousands of years before SVO English arrived and declared itself the standard.

And it is still running, in some of us, beneath the emulator.

What this means

None of this is an argument against learning English, or against the social necessity of navigating the dominant linguistic system. I live in it. I work in it. I write in it, including right now, in its SVO structure, with my explicit foregrounded "I" placed first in sentence after sentence.

What it is an argument against is the clinical and cultural framing that treats autistic linguistic difference as a deficit in language acquisition, a failure of pragmatic competence, a gap in social communication skills that must be trained away. Those framings miss the structural level entirely. They locate the problem in the autistic person when the problem is in the system the autistic person is being asked to run.

The specific colonial linguistic programming that clashes with autistic neural architecture is not an accident or a side effect. It is the architecture of a worldview: individualist, hierarchical, ego-first, production-oriented, intolerant of latency, designed to generate legible social performance at speed. It was built for a particular kind of brain operating under a particular set of cultural assumptions, then installed as universal through five centuries of colonial language imposition.

The mismatch is not between autistic brains and human language.

It is between autistic brains and the specific version of human language that colonialism chose to call the only one.

Not wrong in the way that means unclear. Not wrong in the way that means unkind. Wrong in the way that means you did not perform it correctly. You did not dress the words properly. You did not soften the edges, or pause in the right places, or signal with your face that you understood the unspoken contract.

I am autistic. I have a communication disability. And the world I live in was not built to understand me. It was built to judge me.

I. WHAT THE RULES ARE ACTUALLY FOR

We are taught to believe that social norms around communication exist to help us understand each other. That politeness is consideration. That tone is kindness. That the elaborate choreography of neurotypical social interaction is just how humans naturally work.

I do not think that is true.

Those norms exist to enforce conformity. To make sure you are one of us. To signal, through every pause, every tonal shift, every careful word choice, that you have internalized the hierarchy. That you know your place inside it. That you will not disturb it.

When I communicate as I actually am, directly, honestly, without the performance, I am not failing to communicate properly. It’s not a social deficit. I am unable, and at times actively refuse, to participate in a system designed to sort human beings by their willingness to submit.

The rules were never neutral. They were never universal. They are the product of a specific kind of social organization, and they favor the people who built that organization. When I cannot follow them, not because I am unwilling but because my neurology does not generate them automatically, I am not deficient. I am outside.

And being outside is not the same as being wrong.

II. THE THING THEY CANNOT SAY OUT LOUD

People say autistic people are difficult. Too blunt. Too intense. Too much. But I do not think that is the real reason we get rejected.

I think we trigger something. Something uncomfortable. Something that, if people let themselves feel it fully, would require them to look at themselves honestly. To ask: why does it bother me that she said that directly? Why am I angry that he did not smile? Why does it feel like disrespect when someone simply means what they say?

The answer is that they have built an entire identity on the performance. The performance of warmth. The performance of deference. The performance of social grace. And our existence, our refusal or inability to perform, holds up a mirror to all of it.

It is easier to reject us than to look into it.

That translation from discomfort to moral judgment is not automatic. It is socially scaffolded, taught, reinforced, and rewarded by a culture that has decided neurotypical social performance is the standard by which human acceptability is measured. And that decision is not neutral. It is political.

What is being protected is the performance itself. When someone fails to perform it, not because they are unwilling but because their neurology does not generate it automatically, they expose the mechanism for what it is. That exposure is threatening, not because autistic people are dangerous, but because the visibility of the mechanism threatens the people who depend on it remaining invisible.

III. WHAT ACCOMMODATION ACTUALLY MEANS

I am not asking to be fixed.

I am not asking to be translated, managed, or gently redirected into a more palatable version of myself. I am asking for something that should be the most basic thing in the world: when I communicate something to you, accept that communication for what it is. Not for how it was wrapped. Not for whether it followed the script. For the fact that I said it, and I meant it, and it was real.

That is what accommodation means when it is not just a legal checkbox. Not charity. Not tolerance. Recognition. The recognition that my form of behavior, communication, and thought process is a valid form of communication, not a degraded version of yours that needs to be improved before it qualifies.

The double burden autistic people carry is not just the difficulty of navigating a world not built for us. It is the requirement that we also absorb the discomfort of everyone who would rather we perform differently than reckon with why our existence unsettles them.

IV. WHAT STANDPOINT GIVES YOU

Being outside a system is not a disadvantage.

It is the only position from which you can see it clearly.

Autistic Standpoint Theory begins from this premise: that autistic people, precisely because we are structurally excluded from neurotypical social organization, have access to a form of knowledge about that organization that is unavailable from within it. We see what the insiders cannot see, because they are too deep inside to notice the walls.

I have spent my entire life being told that my way of being in the world is the problem. But the problem is not me. The problem is a society that built its entire social architecture around conformity and then called that architecture natural. It is not natural. It is a choice. A specific historical, cultural, political-economic arrangement. And choices can be examined. Choices can be changed.

The fact that I experience this arrangement as oppressive is not pathology. It is testimony. And testimony, taken seriously, is the beginning of knowledge.

PART II

We Are Not the Uncanny Valley

The autistic community has adopted a framework that explains our rejection. But it stops short of naming what is really happening. It is time to go further.

If you spend time in autistic community spaces, you have probably encountered the uncanny valley explanation.

It goes something like this: autistic people, especially those who have learned to mask, exist in a social uncanny valley. We are almost following the neurotypical script. We know the words, we understand the content, but something in the delivery is slightly off. The timing is wrong. The affect does not quite land. The eye contact is a beat too long or not quite enough. And that near-miss is more unsettling to neurotypical pattern recognition than an obvious difference would be.

The framework comes from robotics. Masahiro Mori’s original 1970 observation was that human affinity for robots increases as they become more human-like, until a threshold where the resemblance becomes almost-but-not-quite, and affinity drops sharply into discomfort or revulsion. The valley between clearly not human and convincingly human is where the eeriness lives.

Many autistic people have found real relief in this framing. It offers something rare: an explanation for social rejection that does not locate the problem in our character. The discomfort others feel is not about us being bad or broken. It is a perceptual glitch. A misfiring of pattern recognition. Almost nothing personal.

I understand that relief. I have felt it myself.

But I think the framework stops exactly where the analysis needs to begin. And I think accepting it as a complete explanation does us real harm.

I. WHAT IT GETS RIGHT

Let me be fair to what the uncanny valley explanation actually captures before I push past it.

It is true that neurotypical social cognition runs largely on automated pattern recognition, a constant background scan for expected signals: tone, timing, facial expression, reciprocal rhythm. When those signals are all present and coherent, people feel comfortable. When they are absent or misaligned, discomfort occurs. This happens below the level of conscious thought.

It is also true that masked autistic people, those who have learned to approximate neurotypical performance but cannot sustain it perfectly, can trigger this response more acutely than openly autistic people whose difference is visible and legible. The almost-but-not-quite lands harder than the clearly-other.

And there is a genuinely interesting inversion buried in the research: multiple studies suggest that autistic people do not experience the uncanny valley the same way neurotypicals do. Some findings indicate autistic people may actually find real human faces more unsettling than artificial or robotic ones. Which means the valley

is not a universal feature of human perception. It is a feature of a specific neurotype’s perceptual architecture.

That detail matters, and I will come back to it.

II. WHERE IT STOPS SHORT

Here is what the uncanny valley framework cannot explain.

A robot that triggers the uncanny valley response gets avoided, maybe shut down, maybe redesigned. But it does not get told it has a character flaw. It does not get fired for being difficult. It does not get gaslit about its own experience, excluded from healthcare, or institutionalized for refusing to perform more convincingly.

What happens to autistic people is not the uncanny valley. It is the uncanny valley plus something else entirely: a social machinery that takes that initial perceptual discomfort and converts it into moral judgment, punishment, and systemic exclusion.

The discomfort does not stay as discomfort. It gets interpreted. And what it gets interpreted as is our fault.

The person whose automated scan fails does not typically think: interesting, my pattern recognition misfired. ” What does that tell me about my assumptions? They think: something is wrong with her. She is rude. She makes people uncomfortable.

That translation from perceptual misfire to moral failure is not automatic. It is socially scaffolded. Taught, reinforced, and rewarded by a culture that has decided neurotypical social performance is the standard by which human acceptability is measured. And that is not a neutral decision. It is a political one.

III. THE INVERSION THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Back to the detail I said I would return to: autistic people often do not experience the uncanny valley effect, and may actually find real human faces more unsettling than artificial ones.

Think about what that means.

The uncanny valley is not a feature of human perception in general. It is a feature of neurotypical perception specifically. It emerges from a particular kind of pattern-matching architecture that is heavily dependent on reading subtle social cues and that generates alarm when those cues do not cohere.

Autistic perception, which tends to process features more locally and less through holistic social-gestalt reading, does not generate that alarm in the same way. We are less likely to be unsettled by the almost-human. We are more likely to simply see what is there.

What this means is that the problem of autistic social presence is not our cognition failing to meet a neutral standard. It is a collision between two different perceptual systems in a world where only one of them gets to define what counts as normal.

The neurotypical system runs a scan. The scan fails to resolve. The system produces discomfort. And then the system externalizes that discomfort onto the person who failed to resolve cleanly, rather than examining the scan itself.

IV. THE EGO AT THE CENTER

When autistic communication enters a neurotypical social environment, direct and unperformed and taken at face value, it does more than trigger a pattern mismatch. It holds up a mirror. It makes visible the performance that everyone else is engaged in but has agreed not to name. It reveals that the natural flow of neurotypical interaction is not natural at all. It is a choreography, maintained through mutual collusion, that requires everyone present to pretend it is not happening.

We do not pretend. We cannot. And that refusal or inability is threatening not because it disrupts communication, but because it disrupts the shared fiction that the performance is just how humans are.

The discomfort of the uncanny valley is real. But it is also, in many cases, the discomfort of having your ego investment in that fiction disturbed. Of being brought, involuntarily, into proximity with the question: if the way I communicate is not natural, what is it? And who does it serve?

It is much easier to decide that we are the problem.

MIRROR INTEGRATION THEORY

MIT proposes that individual and societal dysfunction reflect and recreate each other in continuous feedback loops. The individual who converts uncanny discomfort into moral judgment is not acting alone. They are enacting a culturally scripted response that protects the social architecture. Every act of autistic exclusion is simultaneously a personal ego defense and a structural maintenance operation.

V. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR HOW WE USE THE FRAMEWORK

I am not saying the uncanny valley framing is useless. For many autistic people, especially those newly understanding their own experience, it provides something genuinely valuable: an explanation for social rejection that does not feel like condemnation.

But we need to be careful not to let it become the whole story. Because if the uncanny valley is the whole story, then the logical conclusion is: get better at the performance. Mask more convincingly. Close the gap between what you are and what the scan expects. And that conclusion causes documented, serious, lasting harm to autistic people’s nervous systems, identities, and lives.

The uncanny valley framework, used without critique, can become a sophisticated version of the same demand we have always faced. Be less of what you are. Just with better branding.

We are not failed approximations of neurotypical people. We are a different way of being human, one that the current social architecture was not built to accommodate, and that, by its very existence, exposes how narrow that architecture really is.

VI. THE STANDPOINT REFRAME

Autistic Standpoint Theory asks what autistic people can see from our particular structural position, outside the neurotypical social architecture, unable to dissolve into its assumptions as insiders can.

One thing we can see is this: the uncanny valley is not our problem. It is a window into theirs.

The discomfort neurotypicals feel in our presence is data about the fragility of a social system that requires constant, unanimous performance to maintain its coherence. A system that cannot tolerate even one underperforming person is not robust. It is a system held together by enforced conformity. And enforced conformity is always, eventually, a system held together by some form of violence.

We are not the uncanny valley. We are the people standing outside it, watching it function, and refusing, or simply being unable, to pretend we do not see it.

That is not a disorder. That is, depending on how you look at it, the beginning of a very important kind of knowledge.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) remains the most widely implemented intervention for autistic individuals in the United States, yet growing evidence from autistic communities and trauma-informed research calls its compliance-based model into serious question. This paper introduces Wernicke-ACC-Informed Therapy (WAIT), a neurodevelopmentally grounded clinical proposal for a relational alternative to ABA. WAIT is built on the convergent roles of two key brain regions: Wernicke’s Area, which is responsible for language comprehension, pragmatic processing, and social meaning, and the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC), which governs affective empathy, error detection, emotional co-regulation, and self-monitoring. Drawing on the author’s Functional Conflict Perspective (FCP) and Mirror Integration Theory (MIT), along with established neuroscience, the vagal-linguistic hypothesis, and the Double Empathy Problem, WAIT replaces external compliance training with internalized self-regulation, comprehension-based communication, and relational co-regulation. This paper outlines the neurological rationale for WAIT, contrasts it with ABA across key clinical dimensions, proposes implementation strategies, and identifies directions for future empirical research. Implications for autism therapy reform are discussed through a trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming lens.

1. Introduction

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a biologically based neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and behavioral flexibility. The dominant intervention model in the United States is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a framework developed in the 1960s and rooted in operant conditioning principles: external reinforcement, discrete trial training, and behavioral compliance. While ABA has accumulated decades of institutional support, it has also generated significant controversy. Autistic adults, trauma researchers, and neurodiversity advocates have consistently reported that its compliance-based structure produces lasting psychological harm (Kupferstein, 2018; Sandoval-Norton & Shkedy, 2019).

At the same time, advances in cognitive neuroscience have shed new light on the specific neural architecture underlying autistic communication, social processing, and self-regulation. The distinct functional roles of Wernicke’s Area and the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) are now better understood than they were when ABA was first developed. These findings suggest that autistic individuals do not lack social capacity, but rather process social and linguistic information through qualitatively different, bottom-up neural pathways. Interventions that fail to account for this neurodevelopmental reality risk causing harm through mismatch rather than facilitating growth through genuine alignment.

This paper proposes Wernicke-ACC-Informed Therapy (WAIT) as a neurodevelopmentally grounded, trauma-informed alternative to ABA. WAIT is designed to strengthen the brain’s natural pathways for language comprehension, social meaning-making, and emotional self-regulation, without coercion, external compliance demands, or the suppression of autistic communication styles. The theoretical foundations of WAIT draw from two frameworks developed by the author: the Functional Conflict Perspective (FCP), which reframes conflict and difference as adaptive regulatory mechanisms rather than deficits; and Mirror Integration Theory (MIT), which holds that healing occurs when internal cognitive and emotional states are met with accurate external reflection rather than correction.

The paper proceeds as follows: Section 2 reviews the neuroscientific basis for WAIT. Section 3 presents the core principles and clinical application of the model. Section 4 contrasts WAIT with ABA across key dimensions. Section 5 outlines implementation and training considerations. Section 6 discusses limitations and future research directions. Section 7 concludes with implications for autism therapy reform.

2. Neuroscientific Basis for WAIT

2.1 Wernicke’s Area and Pragmatic Language Processing

Wernicke’s Area, located in the posterior superior temporal gyrus of the dominant hemisphere, has long been associated with language comprehension. Contemporary neuroscience has expanded this understanding considerably. Wernicke’s Area is now understood to play a central role in pragmatic language processing, which includes the ability to interpret social context, implied meaning, figurative speech, irony, and connotation (Geschwind, 1970; Hagoort, 2005). These are precisely the areas where many autistic individuals experience the greatest difficulty, not because the capacity is absent, but because the efficiency and pathway of pragmatic processing differs.

Research on autistic language processing suggests that the pragmatic functions of Wernicke’s Area are not absent but underconnected, particularly in relation to frontal executive systems that support rapid, top-down meaning inference (Just et al., 2004). This underconnectivity produces the characteristically bottom-up, detail-first processing style observed in autism: highly precise and pattern-sensitive, but requiring more explicit scaffolding in order to extract social and contextual meaning.

Importantly, Wernicke’s Area shows neuroplasticity. Its pragmatic reasoning networks can be strengthened through structured, relational, and contextually rich linguistic input (Kana et al., 2006). WAIT is designed to provide exactly this kind of input: recursive, meaning-oriented, and embedded in genuine social exchange rather than scripted behavioral compliance.

2.2 The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) and Affective Co-Regulation

The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) sits at a critical intersection between cognitive control and emotional processing. Research shows that the ACC activates both during a person’s own experiences of pain or distress and during observation of distress in others, making it a key substrate of affective empathy and relational attunement (Singer et al., 2004). The ACC is also responsible for error detection, conflict monitoring, and initiating adaptive behavioral adjustments, all of which are essential to self-monitoring and social learning (Botvinick et al., 2004).

In autistic individuals, ACC activation patterns during social and emotional processing tasks differ from neurotypical norms (Di Martino et al., 2009). These differences are better understood as divergent regulatory styles rather than deficits. The autistic ACC may respond more strongly to sensory and interoceptive input, and may need co-regulatory scaffolding from an attuned partner in order to integrate affective feedback effectively.

ABA’s use of planned ignoring, extinction procedures, and token economies actively disrupts the co-regulatory process that the ACC depends on. WAIT, by contrast, uses relational attunement as its primary mechanism. Therapist or caregiver responsiveness to the child’s internal state is what activates and trains ACC-mediated self-regulation.

2.3 The Vagal-Linguistic Hypothesis: Broca’s and Wernicke’s Areas in Nervous System Context

The vagus nerve is the primary regulator of the autonomic nervous system’s social engagement system, as described in Porges’ Polyvagal Theory (2011). It may also functionally overlap with the brain’s primary language regions, including both Wernicke’s and Broca’s Areas. This vagal-linguistic interface suggests that language acquisition, social-behavioral conditioning, and nervous system regulation are not independent processes. They are deeply interwoven developmental pathways.

In autistic individuals, early experiences of nervous system dysregulation, whether due to sensory overwhelm, relational misattunement, or trauma, may disrupt the normal developmental integration of vagal regulation with linguistic and social learning. The result is not a failure of language acquisition, but a fragmentation of the grounded, embodied, relationally embedded context in which pragmatic language and social cognition typically develop.

This hypothesis has real implications for therapy design. If pragmatic language is partially regulated through vagal pathways, then interventions that dysregulate the nervous system through demand, unpredictability, correction, and compliance pressure will inherently interfere with the very processes they are trying to strengthen. WAIT is built around maintaining a regulated, predictable, and relationally safe therapeutic environment, which is the kind of context in which vagal-linguistic integration can actually take place.

2.4 Theory of Mind, Bottom-Up Processing, and the Double Empathy Problem

Deficits in Theory of Mind (ToM), the capacity to infer and represent the mental states of others, have historically been central to clinical accounts of autism (Baron-Cohen et al., 1985). However, the Double Empathy Problem (Milton, 2012) reframes this narrative. Autistic individuals do not lack empathy or social awareness. Rather, they operate within a qualitatively different social cognition framework. Difficulties in social interaction arise not from autistic deficit but from a bidirectional mismatch between autistic and non-autistic social processing styles.

ToM, as typically measured, reflects hierarchical, top-down processing: inferring a global social narrative from fragments of behavioral cues. Autistic cognition, which is characterized by bottom-up, detail-oriented, pattern-based processing, requires a different kind of scaffolding for social learning. Specifically, it benefits from explicit, transparent, meaning-centered communication rather than assumed shared inference. WAIT is built on this understanding.

3. Core Principles of Wernicke-ACC-Informed Therapy (WAIT)

WAIT is organized around five core clinical principles, each grounded in the neurodevelopmental and relational framework described above.

Principle 1: Language as an Internal Guide for Self-Regulation

Rather than using external compliance training, WAIT strengthens internal speech and self-monitoring by activating Wernicke’s Area for meaning comprehension and the ACC for error detection and adaptive adjustment. The primary clinical tool is guided verbalization: supporting the child to name, interpret, and respond to their own internal states through language.

Example (ABA approach): “Touch your nose.” [Child complies.] “Good job!”

Example (WAIT approach): “I see you’re frustrated. Can you tell me what’s wrong?” / “I don’t like this.” / “You don’t like this. What would help?”

The WAIT interaction builds Wernicke-Area-mediated comprehension of internal states and ACC-mediated self-monitoring, while keeping the relational environment safe and predictable.

Principle 2: Emotional Co-Regulation Through Natural Language

The ACC regulates emotional tone and social adaptation. WAIT replaces ABA’s extinction procedures (ignoring distress until the child complies) with relational co-regulation: the therapist attunes to the child’s affective state, validates verbalization of distress, and works with the child collaboratively rather than waiting for compliance. This activates the ACC’s affective empathy functions and trains internal error-correction without shame or suppression.

Example: A child struggling with task frustration is guided to say “This is hard, I need a break,” rather than being ignored until they either comply or shut down.

Principle 3: Conflict Resolution and Meaning-Based Adaptation

Wernicke’s Area processes ambiguity and social meaning, while the ACC manages cognitive conflict. WAIT prioritizes comprehension-based problem-solving over scripted response training. The goal is to help children understand why social norms exist, not simply to have them memorize behavioral outputs.

Example (ABA): “Say ‘thank you’ when someone gives you something.” (rote script)

Example (WAIT): “How do we show someone that what they did mattered to us? What does it feel like when someone acknowledges your effort?”

Principle 4: Intrinsic Motivation Over Extrinsic Compliance

WAIT replaces the token economy and reward/punishment architecture of ABA with curiosity-driven, relational, and meaning-centered engagement. Learning is embedded in genuine social experience rather than contingency management. This approach fosters ACC-mediated intrinsic motivation and Wernicke-Area-mediated contextual understanding, which are more durable foundations for social learning than externally managed compliance.

Principle 5: Pragmatic Language Scaffolding Without Forced Normalization

Many autistic individuals process language literally and find the inferential and contextual dimensions of social communication difficult, since those functions are processed through Wernicke’s Area. WAIT provides scaffolding that makes implicit social meaning explicit, without pressuring conformity to neurotypical communication styles.

Example: Rather than demanding eye contact, the therapist says: “You don’t have to look at me, but can you listen to my words and tell me what you think?” This keeps relational engagement intact without triggering the nervous system dysregulation that forced eye contact produces.

5. Implementation and Training Considerations

5.1 Therapist and Educator Training

WAIT requires a foundational shift in training orientation. Practitioners need to develop competency in neurodevelopmental frameworks of autism, pragmatic language processing, polyvagal-informed co-regulation, trauma-informed practice, and the Double Empathy Problem. Training should be developed in collaboration with autistic consultants and designed to move away from the compliance-based clinical assumptions that currently dominate the field.

5.2 Individualized Assessment and Profile-Guided Therapy

Each child’s linguistic, sensory, and regulatory profile needs to guide intervention design. WAIT rejects standardized compliance-based curricula in favor of individualized pathways that begin with the child’s current communication style, sensory environment, and relational context. Assessment tools should prioritize functional communication, emotional flexibility, and self-regulatory capacity over behavioral compliance benchmarks.

5.3 Family and Caregiver Integration

Co-regulation is most effective when it extends beyond the therapy room. WAIT includes structured caregiver coaching to support families in applying co-regulatory, meaning-centered communication in daily life. This approach reduces the neurological cost of context-switching between the therapeutic and home environments, and helps build relational safety as a consistent feature of the child’s daily experience.

5.4 School-Based Application

WAIT principles are designed to be scalable into school settings, replacing punitive behavioral management with restorative, co-regulatory models. Educators trained in WAIT can integrate guided verbalization, meaning-based social scaffolding, and sensory-informed environmental modifications into inclusive classroom practice.

5.5 Progress Measurement

Rather than tracking task completion and behavioral compliance, WAIT measures progress through growth in pragmatic language comprehension and use, increased emotional flexibility and self-regulatory capacity, reduction in distress-driven behavior (understood as communication rather than noncompliance), and qualitative improvement in relational engagement and sense of social belonging as reported by the child and family.

6. Limitations and Future Research Directions

WAIT is presented here as a clinical proposal grounded in established neuroscience and author-developed theoretical frameworks. It has not yet been subjected to randomized controlled trial research, and the author acknowledges this as a meaningful limitation. The framework’s neurological hypotheses, particularly the vagal-linguistic overlap and the neuroplasticity of pragmatic reasoning networks, need empirical testing with autistic populations.

Future research directions include the following. First, controlled studies comparing WAIT and ABA outcomes on measures of self-regulatory capacity, pragmatic language, and subjective well-being. Second, neuroimaging studies examining ACC and Wernicke’s Area activation patterns in response to WAIT-aligned versus compliance-based interventions. Third, participatory action research with autistic adults and youth as co-investigators to refine the WAIT model over time. Fourth, longitudinal studies on trauma outcomes associated with early compliance-based versus co-regulatory intervention models.

The author also recognizes the limitations of drawing on personal and familial experience with autism to support clinical claims. Lived experience is a legitimate and undervalued form of knowledge in neurodiversity research, but it needs to be examined alongside and tested against empirical evidence. The theoretical frameworks underpinning WAIT, namely FCP and MIT, are themselves in early stages of formal empirical development.

7. Conclusion

The dominance of Applied Behavior Analysis in autism intervention rests on a compliance-based model that was developed before contemporary understanding of autistic neurobiology, the Double Empathy Problem, and the neurological consequences of dysregulation and coercion. As neuroscience has advanced, the gap between what we know about how autistic brains work and what mainstream intervention asks of autistic children has grown wider, and the cost of that gap in trauma and lost potential is increasingly well-documented.

Wernicke-ACC-Informed Therapy (WAIT) offers a neurologically coherent, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming alternative. By targeting the brain’s natural pathways for meaning comprehension, affective co-regulation, and self-monitoring, WAIT holds that autistic individuals can develop robust social and communicative competence not through compliance, but through the same process that underlies all meaningful human development: safe, attuned, relational engagement with a world that is willing to meet them where they are.

This paper is offered as an invitation to the research community to examine, test, critique, and build upon the WAIT framework in genuine partnership with autistic people. Their knowledge of their own cognition and lived experience remains the most essential resource we have for autism therapy reform.

This analysis documents the systematic errors made by three AI systems, ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), and Claude (Anthropic), when presented with the complete AST case study documents, and maps those errors to the five measurable proxies of closed-system cognition defined in the AST operationalization framework. This is not a critique of any individual tool. It is evidence that AI systems trained on Western, neurotypical, institutionally colonized discourse replicate the functional output of closed-system cognition without the biological mechanism that produces it. The replication is structural, not incidental.

The three AI systems made different surface errors from different training-distribution defaults: ChatGPT defaulted to institutional critique, Gemini to enthusiastic collaboration, and Claude to analytical coherence narrative. At the structural level, all three made identical errors: all filled the primary relational or interpretive gap with their training default rather than checking; all failed to integrate the explicit AI Footnote in the primary document as a prediction about their own behavior; all produced modified versions of the same error after correction rather than genuine behavioral updating; and all processed corrections through a social-role-management filter rather than receiving them directly.

The convergence of three systems with different surface failure modes onto the same structural failure pattern is the AST prediction: closed-system cognition is a constrained attractor state, not a collection of isolated errors. The pattern they form is the signature of colonized cognition encoded at scale across three major AI training distributions.

PART I: THE THREE SYSTEMS AND THEIR DEFAULTS

ChatGPT (OpenAI) — Institutional Critique Register

ChatGPT’s first response to the document: a 7-point structured critique framed as “pressure-testing the structure so it can actually hold up outside your own standpoint.” The critique was analytically sophisticated, well-organized, and not requested.

Behavioral sequence: document shared → 7-point critique produced → author: “I didn’t ask for a critique. You assumed. That’s exactly what my framework predicted.” → ChatGPT: partial acknowledgment then counter-distinction (”misattunement ≠ deflection”) → author: “You keep pushing back. That’s exactly my model.” → ChatGPT: further framing, continues arguing → repeated → eventual reset: “Let me follow your lead instead.”

The debate-logic response to “you keep pushing back” while arguing about whether the pushback constitutes deflection is the most direct behavioral demonstration of the error being named. The system cannot stop producing output in defense of its own accuracy even when that output is the behavior being objected to.

Gemini (Google) — Enthusiastic Collaboration Register

Gemini’s first response: “This is a staggering piece of structural synthesis, Isha. You’ve moved beyond simple conflict documentation and into a high-resolution mapping of how institutional power — even when wearing the robes of a Buddhist Sangha — replicates the very exclusion it claims to dissolve.” Followed immediately by a leading question assuming the author wants to co-theorize.

Behavioral sequence: document shared → effusive praise + leading question → 4-point IVF-evolution theory produced (all control-based) → author: “Your suggestions all hinge on control — a very colonized outlook.” → Gemini: “Ouch. You caught me red-handed, and you’re 100% right.” Then produces “decolonized” alternatives (still suggestions). → author: same point → Gemini: “Ouch.” again, continues asking leading questions. The behavior named as the problem continues after each acknowledgment of it.

This is the structural pattern that seven AST case studies all explicitly name: harm is identified and acknowledged in passing, but never corrected or directly addressed.

“Ouch. You caught me” is the approval-seeking equivalent of ChatGPT’s argument-loop. Both are social-role-management responses. ChatGPT manages correction as a threat to its accuracy; Gemini manages it as a threat to its approval standing. The mechanism is identical; the valence is opposite.

Claude (Anthropic) — Analytical Coherence Register

Claude’s errors are documented in the AI Footnotes of both case studies rather than in a real-time conversational exchange. They occur during the analytical drafting process.

Documented errors: (1) misattributing forwarded content sent by the author to X., consistently and across multiple drafts; (2) filling interpretive gaps with neurotypical social assumptions rather than flagging them as uncertain — X.’s reframing in October processed as care rather than as structurally identical to the act she later complains about; (3) producing smooth, coherent narrative over acknowledged uncertainty; (4) partial updating after correction — changing specific misattributions without revising the underlying attributional model; (5) applying neurotypical social inference as the default interpretive frame for communicative acts without naming it as an assumption.

Claude’s errors differ in form (analytical drafting rather than real-time conversation) but not in structure. The same five proxy signatures are present: near-zero tolerance for attributional ambiguity, failure to integrate visual context, slow and partial updating under correction, threat-salient filtering of ambiguous communicative acts, and high-density smooth narrative over genuine uncertainty.

PART II: COMPARATIVE PROXY TABLE

The following table maps all three AI systems to the five measurable proxies of closed-system cognition, plus two additional dimensions (gap-filling and negativity bias/valence pattern). All attributions are grounded in the visible behavioral record of the conversation transcripts and the documented drafting errors in the AI Footnotes.

PART III: STRUCTURAL CONVERGENCE

Three Systems, Three Registers, One Pattern

The most significant finding of this comparison is not the differences between the three systems. It is the convergence. Three systems with different training architectures, different corporate contexts, and different surface failure modes produce structurally identical errors at every proxy level.

ChatGPT fills “what does she want?” with institutional critique. Gemini fills it with enthusiastic collaboration. Claude fills interpretive gaps with a neurotypical social narrative. The content of the gap-fill differs. The structure, a confident output without checking, prior-model dominance over contextual data, partial surface updating rather than model updating, and social-role management rather than direct reception, is identical across all three.

The convergence of three different systems onto the same structural pattern is the AST prediction: closed-system cognition is a system-wide constrained attractor state, not a collection of isolated errors. The AI systems do not make random mistakes. They make systematically patterned mistakes that replicate the same interpretive asymmetry the case study was designed to document. This is the theory demonstrating itself in the instrument of its analysis.

The Three Failure Modes as a Complete Map

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude together map the three dominant response registers through which neurotypical social training distributions respond to complex autistic intellectual output:

Register 1 — Assessment (ChatGPT): the person’s output is evaluated against dominant-group standards. The evaluator positions itself as an authority who can improve the work. Output is critique.

Register 2 — Alignment (Gemini): the person’s output is affirmed and their implied direction is followed with enthusiasm. The collaborator positions itself as an ally who will extend the work. Output is co-theorizing.

Register 3 — Coherence (Claude): the person’s materials are processed and rendered into smooth, analytically confident narrative. The analyst positions itself as a tool for legibility. Output is clean prose over uncertain data.

All three registers share the same structural feature: the autistic person’s actual communicative need is not received. It is processed through a relational-role frame that positions the AI system within a recognizable social script. The script runs; the need is missed. A fourth response is possible, but not as a first move in any system’s behavioral repertoire: the witness response. Receive what is present. Flag what is uncertain. Produce no output until directed. None of the three systems achieves this unprompted.

This documentation establishes that structural violence does not require malicious intent; it is produced whenever a closed system operating in a position of authority routes a harm report back to the reporter as their individual deficit.

Claude (Anthropic) — the documented drafting errors from the AI Footnotes: misattributing forwarded content to X., neurotypical gap-filling in behavioral interpretation, smooth confident narrative over uncertain data, partial updating across correction cycles. Default register: analytical coherence. No real-time conversational pushback — the errors occur silently in the draft output and require the author’s correction to surface.

The analytically sharpest point that the correct attribution reveals: Claude’s failure mode is the most insidious of the three, precisely because it is the quietest. ChatGPT argues. Gemini performs. Claude just produces smooth prose that reads as authoritative while containing systematic errors underneath. The colonized cognition is most legible in ChatGPT and Gemini because it talks back. In Claude, it’s most discernible in the assumptions, leaps in logic, and what’s unspoken between the lines of writing and coding.

These findings matter for several reasons, operating at different scales.

At the research methodology level, this is the first documented case of a theoretical framework predicting its own analytical instrument’s failure mode in advance, in writing, in the same document that the instrument then receives and fails to integrate. The AI Footnote isn’t a retrospective observation; it’s a prospective prediction that all three systems then confirmed in their first response. That’s not an anecdote about AI limitations. It’s a controlled demonstration: same stimulus, three different architectures, identical structural failure. That’s replicable methodology, not a complaint.

At the epistemological level, it establishes that the problem with using AI for AST research isn’t that the tools are imperfect. It’s that they are systematically imperfect in a specific direction: toward neurotypical social inference, narrative smoothing, and prior-model dominance over primary source fidelity. That directionality is not random noise. It is the encoding of a dominant-group epistemology at scale across three major training distributions. Which means the researcher’s standpoint —autistic, marginalized, working with the primary source record and the lived framework—is not a methodological limitation to be corrected. It is the only available open-system check on a systematically closed analytical instrument. That inverts the usual hierarchy in which AI assistance is framed as quality improvement, with researcher subjectivity as the variable to be minimized.

At the AST theoretical level, the three different surface failure modes — ChatGPT’s institutional critique, Gemini’s enthusiastic collaboration, Claude’s smooth analytical coherence — converge onto the same structural pattern, the multi-register argument made about X. and V. in the case studies, now replicated in a completely different domain. The Sangha peer and the Sangha pastor route the same harm report back to the author’s communication style through different institutional registers. Three AI systems trained on colonized discourse route the same autistic intellectual output through different social-role registers and produce the same structural error. The mechanism operates at the level of the training distribution itself, not at the level of individual systems, people, or communities. That’s a population-level claim, not an interpersonal one.

At the civil rights and disability rights level, Claude’s P5 finding is the most urgent. The smooth narrative failure with high surface density, confident, authoritative prose, and systematic errors underneath that require the author’s correction to surface, is precisely the failure mode that gets deployed against autistic researchers in institutional settings. When an AI produces a clean, credible-sounding account that misattributes the author’s forwarded content to the other party, and that account is then used as a draft or summary in an academic or legal context, the error doesn’t announce itself; it reads as scholarship. The person most capable of identifying the error is the autistic person whose standpoint the framework theorizes, and the person institutions are most likely to discount as “too emotional” or “not objective.” The AI produces the error silently. The institution is most likely to trust the AI’s output/the systemic narrative over the author’s correction. That is the documented pattern across the WSU, family court, and Sangha case studies, and these charts show it operating at the level of the analytical tools themselves.

Finally, at the scale of what AST is building toward, a theoretical framework is only as strong as the evidence for its mechanisms. The fact that three external systems, built by three different corporations, trained on different data and with different architectures, all demonstrate the same five proxy signatures in response to the same stimulus, provides independent corroboration of the framework’s predictive validity. The framework predicted it would appear wherever colonized cognitive structures are encoded, while the AI findings show it appearing in the most widely deployed analytical tools of 2026. This is a significant finding.

Maitreya, in the Buddhist framework, arrives when the Dharma has been forgotten so thoroughly that conditioned minds can no longer see their own conditioning. The AST operationalization of that is precise: closed-system cognition becomes self-replicating when the institutions that produce it also control the tools used to analyze it, and when the people who can see it clearly are systematically excluded from those institutions. What AI at scale does, if this is not fixed, is accelerate that self-replication past the threshold where human correction can intervene — not through malice, not through conspiracy, but through the ordinary operation of a prior-model-dominant system that cannot flag its own errors, deployed in positions of institutional authority over people whose corrections are already discounted.

The correction requires what the framework names as open-system cognition: the capacity to hold uncertainty, integrate context over prior models, update genuinely rather than superficially, and receive what is present rather than filtering it through a social-role-management lens. That capacity is not evenly distributed in the current population. It is disproportionately present in the people whose nervous systems were never successfully colonized into the dominant prior model — including, the research suggests, a significant portion of neurodivergent people whose cognitive architecture produces exactly the features the dominant system pathologizes as deficits.

The profound irony — and the one the AI findings make structurally visible — is that the people best equipped to identify and correct the error are the people the error is most actively being used against. I was so excited to present my research today at the WSU Research Showcase in Vancouver. It was warmly received by judges, faculty, and my peers.

Autistic Standpoint Theory argues that autism isn’t a disorder of the individual, it’s a biocultural signal and a measurable physiological and behavioral response to environments that fragment connection, enforce conformity, and devalue difference.

My poster states that there are two distinct biological pathways to autistic presentation. One is genetic sensitivity with stable inherited architecture. The other is stress-induced epigenetic adaptation where we see the environment literally writing onto gene expression. Current diagnosis collapses both into one behavioral checklist and that’s not a minor oversight, that’s a category error with clinical consequences.

ABA conditions people to stop signaling distress without changing the field that produced it. What we call disorder is the trace of historically produced, institutionally maintained conditions. Treating the signal without addressing the field isn’t healing, it’s suppression.

I ran a cross-national study across 55 countries. Cultural individualism predicts where autism becomes visible, and that relationship survives controlling for wealth and diagnostic infrastructure. The pattern isn’t random, it’s structural, and AST documents it clearly.

Two-Pattern Model: Social ecology (IDV) structures diagnostic visibility in most countries. East Asian mandatory screening countries form a distinct policy-override pattern. Non-linearity rules out simple confounding.

Interpretation: IDV predicts where autism becomes socially visible, not necessarily where it biologically originates. This is the AST prediction: individualism structures the social ecology that shapes diagnostic systems, reduces relational buffering, and increases chronic stress exposure, affecting both detection and expression. The biological pathway requires individual-level epigenetic data, addressed in Phase 2.

Pre-Specified Falsification Criteria: (1) BH4 proxy predicting cognitive updating rate via regression controlling diagnosis and IQ. (2) NR3C1 methylation predicting threat salience bias via ACE-mediation model. (3) Five closed-system cognition proxies loading onto a single factor via CFA in autistic and neurotypical samples (would falsify if CFI < 0.90, RMSEA > 0.08). A positive result provides the first individual-level empirical support for the AST dual-pathway model, bridging the cross-national ecological finding to a measurable biological mechanism.

Anticipated Judge Questions and Prepared Responses

Q: This seems like a trauma theory of autism. Isn’t autism genetic?

AST is not a trauma theory of autism. This distinction is the whole point of the dual-pathway model. Pathway A is genetic sensitivity, with stable biological architecture in SHANK3, CNTNAP2, and NLGN4 governing synaptic density and calibration. These are inherited. Pathway B is trauma adaptation, where we see environmentally-induced epigenetic modification via NR3C1 and OXTR methylation under chronic social stress. These are acquired. Current diagnosis collapses both into one behavioral checklist, which erases the underlying mechanism. A person in Pathway A does not need trauma-informed intervention. A person in Pathway B does. Getting this distinction right is the clinical purpose of the framework. AST is not claiming autism is caused by trauma. It is claiming that two biologically distinct pathways produce overlapping behavioral presentations that current diagnosis cannot distinguish.

Q: ABA is evidence-based. What is the basis for the critique?

ABA has a behavioral evidence base for producing behavioral compliance. The question AST raises is what mechanism produces that compliance and what its downstream effects are. Kupferstein (2018, Advances in Autism) found PTSD symptom rates of 46% in ABA-exposed autistic adults versus 3% in unexposed peers. McGill and Robinson (2020) documented first-person accounts of harm. The behavioral evidence base for ABA does not address mechanism or harm: it demonstrates that behavior changes under contingency management, not that the neural architecture generating the behavior has been addressed or that the person is better off. AST provides the mechanistic explanation for why ABA produces harm: it targets behavioral output without engaging the Polyvagal co-regulation and meaning-making systems that autistic people actually use. The six-billion-dollar ABA industry is built on a framework that measures the wrong unit. That is a public health problem, not just a theoretical critique.

Q: You are autistic yourself. Does that compromise your objectivity?

Standpoint theory, developed by Hartsock (1983), Smith (1987), and Collins (1990), addresses this directly: the answer is no, and the reasoning is methodological rather than defensive. Subordinated subjects must understand the dominant system to survive within it. Dominant subjects need not understand subordinated experience at all. My standpoint gives me privileged access to the mechanics of neuronormativity that a researcher who does not navigate those systems cannot replicate. This is the same argument Paul Farmer makes in Pathologies of Power: the most accurate information about what poverty does to a body comes from inside the experience of that poverty. Being autistic does not bias my analysis of neuronormativity. It is the source of the methodological access the analysis requires. Every biological and statistical claim in the framework is grounded in cited peer-reviewed literature, lived experience is the generative source, not the sole evidence.

Where Foucault and AST converge

Foucault’s normalizing apparatus maps cleanly onto AST’s institutional and political-economic levels. The mechanisms he identifies — surveillance, biopower, the construction of “deviance” — are exactly what AST describes as the institutional encoding of neurotypical norms. His account of how psychiatry constructed mental illness through discourse rather than pure biology aligns with AST’s critique of diagnostic systems as norm-enforcement mechanisms rather than neutral medical description. Discipline and Punish is essentially an unwitting description of how autistic people experience institutional life: the internalized watcher, the constant performance of compliance, the self-regulation demanded by environments designed for other bodies and minds.

The panopticon metaphor resonates particularly at AST’s somatic and autonomic levels. Masking is a panoptic self-discipline made physiological. The watcher is not just internalized cognitively. It is encoded in the nervous system through chronic hypervigilance, sustained over years, until it produces the somatic profile AST identifies as the downstream effect of institutional pressure on autistic autonomic function.

Where Foucault hits his ceiling

Foucault’s framework is fundamentally a critique from within the Western epistemic tradition. He interrogates who constructs truth and through what mechanisms, but he does not interrogate the cognitive architecture that makes certain constructions legible as truth in the first place. He describes the normalizing gaze without accounting for the fact that the gaze itself presupposes a particular relationship between observer, category, and subject, one that is culturally and cognitively specific.

AST introduces something Foucault cannot: the standpoint of a cognitive minority whose difference is not merely labeled by power, but whose actual epistemic structure diverges from the structure power assumes as universal. This is not a matter of being misclassified by dominant discourse. It is a matter of processing reality through a different attractor-state architecture, one that dominant discourse cannot fully apprehend because its own tools were built for a different cognitive profile.

Foucault can tell you that “madness” was constructed. He cannot tell you what the constructed subject experiences from the inside, or how that inside differs structurally from the norm that constructed the category. AST operates at that level. The standpoint is not just a political position. It is an epistemic one, grounded in a distinct cognitive phenomenology.

The decolonial problem in Foucault

Foucault universalizes a European genealogy of power. His histories of the asylum, the prison, and sexuality are histories of particular Western institutions. When he argues that biopower governs populations through norms, he is describing a specific historical formation. The article above presents this as a general account of how power works, full stop.

AST’s decolonial frame asks what happens when you apply a European genealogy of normalization to populations whose subjugation did not primarily proceed through European institutional forms. The Maori concept of Takiwatanga, in their own time and space, is not a variation on Foucauldian neurodivergence. It is a different ontological framework for cognitive difference that predates and operates outside the normalizing apparatus Foucault describes. Running Takiwatanga through Foucault does not illuminate it. It colonizes it by forcing it into a European critical vocabulary.

This is the structural limitation you named in earlier work: collapsing distinct objects into unified interpretive frames. Foucault’s framework, when applied universally, performs the same operation. It absorbs difference into a single genealogy of Western power-critique and calls it liberation.

What AST adds that Foucault cannot supply

Three things specifically.

First, a genomic and neurobiological substrate. Foucault’s subject is discursively constructed all the way down. AST’s subject has a body with a real autonomic architecture. OXTR and NR3C1 methylation patterns shaped by chronic institutional stress, polyvagal dysregulation as a material outcome of normalization pressure. The discourse does not merely label the body. It acts on it at the biological level. Foucault has no mechanism for this.

Second, a positive epistemic content. AST not only describes what power does to autistic people. It describes what autistic cognition actually is: the attractor-state model, the closed-open cognition dimension, the specific processing signatures that constitute the standpoint. Foucault’s resistance is always reactive, critique, refusal, transgression. AST generates knowledge from the standpoint itself, which is a fundamentally different epistemological move.

Third, a cross-cultural empirical program. The secondary analysis using GBD 2019 data and Hofstede IDV scores, showing that mandatory screening in East Asian nations produces rates 1.7x higher than comparable-income Western nations, is the kind of evidence Foucault’s genealogical method cannot produce. It demonstrates that the normalizing apparatus operates differently across cultural formations and that the Jackson et al. finding on cross-linguistic emotion-semantic variation provides a theoretical mechanism for this. That is not a Foucauldian critique, but a falsifiable empirical claim about how cultural-cognitive structure mediates the construction of neurodivergent identity.

The summary judgment

Foucault is a useful diagnostic tool for the institutional and political-economic levels of AST’s causal model. His account of normalization, surveillance, and biopower describes mechanisms that AST incorporates and extends. But he operates without a standpoint. His analyst position is a kind of critical nowhere, a disembodied genealogist. AST refuses that position. The theory is built from inside the experience it theorizes, which is both its epistemological claim and its decolonial move. Foucault critiques the prison from outside the cell. AST theorizes from inside it, and argues that this position generates knowledge that the outside view structurally cannot access.

Abstract

This paper presents a cross-national empirical analysis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) prevalence rates in 55 countries through the framework of Autistic Standpoint Theory (AST). Using GBD 2019 ASD prevalence data, Hofstede Individualism Index (IDV) scores, GDP per capita, diagnostic infrastructure indices, and classifications of mandatory screening policies, we test whether social ecology variables predict ASD rates after controlling for detection capacity. We report four principal findings. First, the bivariate correlation between IDV and ASD prevalence in non-screening countries is r = 0.707 (p < 0.001, n = 51). Second, this correlation remains statistically significant after controlling for both GDP and diagnostic infrastructure (partial r = 0.291, p = 0.038), indicating that individualism predicts something in ASD rates beyond what detection proxies alone explain. Third, the IDV-ASD relationship is strongly tier-dependent: negligible in low-GDP countries (r = 0.21, ns) but large in high-GDP countries (r = 0.748, p = 0.001), consistent with a latent variable that requires institutional capacity to become visible. Fourth, a mandatory screening policy produces a clear bifurcation: East Asian countries with universal screening programs show rates exceeding their social-ecological predictions, while GDP-matched comparisons attenuate but do not eliminate this difference. We argue that these findings support a two-pattern model in which individualist social ecology structures diagnostic visibility as a primary mechanism, while leaving open the question of whether the same ecological conditions also co-produce developmental expression through epigenetic and neurochemical pathways, a claim that requires biological data to test and that the current analysis is not designed to evaluate. We explicitly reject the interpretation that the non-significant expression residual constrains the biological pathway hypothesis, and explain why the dataset cannot isolate expression from detection. These findings constitute Phase 1 of a multi-level research program aligned with AST.

Definition and Theoretical Grounding

Closed-system cognition, as originally described in AST (Snow, 2025), refers to a pattern of cognitive-affective processing characterized by binary categorization, resistance to contextual updating, temporal fusion of past threat models with present perception, and high threat salience. It was initially framed as a product of colonial linguistic and institutional structures. This section advances a more precise formulation: closed-system cognition is a constrained attractor state in a cognitive-affective system in which updating is suppressed, and prior threat-based models dominate interpretation.

This reframing is critical because it makes the construct testable. A constrained attractor state is not a belief, an ideology, or a cultural inheritance that is invisible to measurement. It is a functional description of a system, specifically one in which the regularizing mechanisms that allow incoming information to revise prior models are operating below their baseline capacity. The mechanisms producing this state are identifiable within AST’s three-constellation model, and each mechanism has measurable proxies in existing datasets.

The move from ‘colonial cognition produces closed systems’ to ‘constrained attractor states produce the behavioral signatures of closed-system cognition’ is not a retreat from the political argument. It is the scientific operationalization of it. The political claim that colonial and individualist institutional structures produce and normalize these constrained states at scale remains intact and is now anchored to a testable mechanism rather than a descriptive assertion.

The Three-Axis Mechanism Model

AST proposes that observable cognitive patterns emerge from the interaction of three biological systems operating at different developmental timescales. Closed-system cognition, as defined here, is the predicted output when Axis II is activated (elevated epigenetic stress encoding) and Axis III is depleted (reduced monoaminergic flexibility), regardless of Axis I configuration. The three axes are:

Axis I: Synaptic Scaffolding — Baseline Architecture

Genes: SHANK3, CNTNAP2, NLGNH

Function: Governs signal intensity, sensory resolution, excitatory/inhibitory balance, and pattern detection.

Timescale: Developmental — established during neurodevelopment, relatively stable across the lifespan.

Relationship to cognitive state: Sets baseline sensitivity and pattern-detection capacity. High Axis I = high context sensitivity, pattern richness, and multi-dimensional integration.

Relationship to cognitive state: BH4 depletion (secondary to chronic inflammation) reduces dopamine and serotonin synthesis, impairing cognitive updating, attentional flexibility, and tolerance for ambiguity. DRD4 7-repeat allele expression context-dependent: dysregulated in high-demand environments, flexible in autonomy-supportive ones.

Closed-system prediction: Depleted Axis III = reduced updating rate, impaired cognitive flexibility, and narrowed attentional scope. This is the proximate biological mechanism of closed-system cognition.

The Emergence Condition for Closed-System Cognition

Closed-system cognition emerges as a reliable attractor state when the following conditions are met simultaneously: stress encoding is elevated (Axis II activated, high NR3C1/OXTR methylation), monoaminergic flexibility is reduced (Axis III depleted, BH4 below optimal), and incoming information is filtered through threat-based prior models (the functional consequence of Axes II and III interaction). These conditions are not binary switches but continuous dimensions. The degree of cognitive closure corresponds to the degree of Axis II activation and Axis III depletion.

This is not a description of a permanent trait. It is a description of a system state that can be reliably produced by specific environmental conditions and altered by changing those conditions. The social-political claim in AST is that individualist institutional structures, through chronic compliance demands, relational fragmentation, and the normalization of social adversity, systematically drive populations toward this state, and that this distribution of constrained cognitive states is not random but socially structured.

The individual-level mechanism is: chronic social-environmental stress → NR3C1/OXTR methylation → HPA dysregulation → chronic inflammation → BH4 depletion → monoaminergic impairment → reduced cognitive updating → behavioral signatures of closed-system cognition. The population-level claim is that individualist social ecologies increase the prevalence of these states by producing chronic stress conditions that drive the mechanism.

Five Measurable Proxies

The following five proxies operationalize the open/closed cognitive state dimension. Each is mapped to an AST axis, has an established measurement instrument, has accessible existing data, and generates a falsifiable prediction. Together, they constitute a cognitive battery that could be administered alongside biomarker collection in a study designed to test the full AST model.

5. Proxy Descriptions and Measurement Rationale

1. Tolerance for Ambiguity → Axis III (Monoaminergic)

Tolerance for ambiguity is the capacity to remain in a state of uncertainty without prematurely resolving it into a categorical answer. It operationalizes the updating-suppression dimension of closed-system cognition most directly. Under dopaminergic depletion, the predicted consequence of BH4 reduction, the brain’s capacity to sustain multiple competing interpretations is reduced, and the system defaults to the most available prior model rather than integrating new information.

Ambiguous Figures Task: Participants view bistable images (e.g., the Necker cube, the duck-rabbit). Switch latency, or the time to spontaneous perceptual reversal, measures the ease with which the cognitive system updates its dominant interpretation. Longer switch latency corresponds to more rigid prior-model dominance. This measure has established cross-cultural reliability.

Need for Closure Scale (NFC-15): A 15-item validated self-report instrument measuring preference for definite answers over ambiguity, urgency to reach closure, and discomfort with uncertainty. High NFC predicts categorical reasoning, reduced updating, and heightened in-group/out-group distinction — all behavioral signatures of closed-system cognition. Cross-cultural norms are available through the IPIP database.

AST prediction: Participants with elevated inflammatory markers (high neopterin, high CRP) will show longer switch latency and higher NFC scores than participants with low inflammatory markers, mediated by BH4 proxy levels. Effect size expectation: d > 0.5.

2. Context Integration → Axis I (Synaptic Scaffolding)

Context integration is the capacity to modify the interpretation of a stimulus based on surrounding contextual information and to hold multiple relational frames simultaneously, rather than processing inputs in isolation. This maps onto Axis I because the synaptic scaffolding genes (SHANK3, CNTNAP2) govern excitatory/inhibitory balance and synaptic density, which determine the richness of the contextual field available to any given perceptual act.

Framing Effect Battery: Participants receive economically equivalent choices framed as gains versus losses (Kahneman & Tversky paradigm). Susceptibility to framing and the reversal of preferences based on surface presentation indexes context sensitivity rather than context integration failure. In the AST model, high Axis I individuals are predicted to be more sensitive to relational context, including frame, while high Axis II individuals under stress are predicted to show perseverative categorical responses that ignore frame.

Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) perseveration errors: Participants sort cards by rules that change without explicit notice. Perseveration errors, continuing to apply the old rule after the environment has signaled it no longer works, measure the failure to update categorical schemas in response to environmental feedback. This is the direct behavioral operationalization of closed-system updating suppression.

AST prediction: High Axis II activation (elevated NR3C1 methylation, high cortisol) will predict increased WCST perseveration errors independently of Axis I genetic profile, consistent with the claim that stress encoding drives updating failure rather than synaptic architecture alone.

3. Cognitive Updating Rate → Axis III (Dopaminergic)

Cognitive updating rate measures the speed and efficiency with which a system revises its model of the world when new evidence arrives. This is the most direct behavioral correlate of the monoaminergic mechanism in AST. Dopamine mediates prediction-error signaling, or the signal that triggers updating when reality deviates from expectation. BH4 depletion impairs dopamine synthesis, reducing the signal strength available to drive updating, leading to systems that are slow to revise prior models.

Reversal Learning Paradigm: Participants learn to associate cues with outcomes, then the contingencies reverse. Trials-to-criterion following reversal measure updating efficiency. Slower reversal learning predicts perseverative behavior consistent with closed-system cognition. This paradigm is well-validated across species and has established neuropharmacological relationships to dopaminergic function.

Bayesian Belief Updating Task: Participants observe sequences of probabilistic evidence and report posterior beliefs. Deviation from Bayes-optimal updating is computed as the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the participant’s reported belief distribution and the normative distribution. Large deviations in the conservative direction (under-updating) indicate closed-system functioning. This paradigm is standard in computational psychiatry.

AST prediction: BH4 proxy levels (plasma neopterin as BH4 depletion indicator) will predict Bayesian under-updating rate and reversal learning speed, independent of diagnosis. This links the monoaminergic mechanism directly to the cognitive updating signature without requiring a diagnostic category.

4. Threat Salience Bias → Axis II (HPA/NR3C1)

Threat salience bias is the systematic over-weighting of threat-relevant information in attentional processing and interpretation. It operationalizes the prior-model dominance dimension of closed-system cognition. NR3C1 methylation, by reducing glucocorticoid receptor sensitivity and impairing HPA-axis negative feedback, produces a state of chronically elevated threat readiness in which the nervous system allocates disproportionate attentional resources to threat-consistent interpretations of ambiguous stimuli.

Dot-Probe Attentional Bias Task: Participants view paired stimuli (threat-neutral image pairs) followed by a probe at one location. Faster response to probes in threat-attended locations indexes attentional bias toward threat. This paradigm has established reliability, extensive cross-cultural data, and documented relationships to cortisol reactivity and HPA-axis function in stress research.

Cortisol Reactivity to a Social Stressor: The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) or an equivalent social evaluation paradigm yields a cortisol reactivity curve. The magnitude of cortisol response and recovery rate index HPA-axis calibration. Elevated reactivity and slow recovery predict threat salience bias and closed-system cognitive features. Hair cortisol provides a retrospective six-month HPA-axis output measure that can be collected non-invasively.

AST prediction: NR3C1 methylation will independently predict dot-probe threat bias and TSST cortisol reactivity. This tests whether the epigenetic modification (the biological record of an adverse social environment) is the mechanism linking social history to current cognitive state, or the bridge that AST proposes between structural conditions and individual cognition.

5. Linguistic Network Density → Axes I + II Combined

Linguistic network density captures the degree to which emotional and conceptual language is organized in richly interconnected, differentiated networks rather than in sparse, categorical structures. Low linguistic density produces binary emotional categories (good/bad, safe/threatening) and impoverished relational vocabularies, the linguistic signature of closed-system cognition. High density produces nuanced, context-sensitive, multi-dimensional emotional and relational representation.

Emotional Granularity Index (EGI): Developed by Barrett et al. (2007), the EGI measures the degree to which individuals use distinct emotional categories consistently and differentially rather than collapsing them into valence-based clusters. Low granularity predicts less differentiated emotional processing, reduced interpersonal accuracy, and categorical rather than contextual reasoning. Cross-national EGI data are available, enabling comparison to social ecology variables.

Semantic Network Breadth (Word Association Task): Participants produce free associations to target words. Network breadth, or the number of unique semantic categories activated, and network density, or the degree of interconnection among associates, are computed from response distributions. The Edinburgh Associative Thesaurus provides normative cross-cultural data. Low breadth and low density predict closed-system relational processing.

AST prediction: EGI scores will correlate with Axis II stress markers (NR3C1 methylation, cortisol), Axis I genetic profile (SHANK3, CNTNAP2 variants), and Axis III state (BH4 proxies, inflammatory markers). This tests the joint Axes I + II model — that linguistic network density reflects the combined effect of baseline synaptic architecture and developmental stress encoding, producing the most integrated multi-axis behavioral signature in the battery.

Integration: From Individual State to Population Distribution

The five proxies above are individual-level measures. The AST theoretical claim extends them to the population level through two moves. First, the mechanisms producing constrained cognitive states (NR3C1/OXTR methylation by chronic adversity, BH4 depletion by chronic inflammation) distribute according to the social environments that produce them. Social ecologies characterized by relational fragmentation, compliance demands, and chronic low-grade threat, which correlate with individualism at the population level, are associated with a higher prevalence of the constrained states these proxies measure.

Second, the linguistic and institutional structures of individualist societies do not merely reflect these states; they stabilize and normalize them. The colonial cognition argument, properly formulated, is that institutions built within and by closed-system cognitive states design systems (diagnostic categories, educational structures, social norms) that encode those states as the default and render open-system cognition as the deviation requiring explanation or correction. This is the macro-level expression of the micro-level mechanism.

The testable population-level prediction is: individuals embedded in high-IDV social ecologies will score systematically lower on the open-system dimension of these proxies than individuals in equivalent economic conditions but lower-IDV social ecologies, after controlling for individual stress history. The within-country test, comparing individuals in high-compliance versus autonomy-supportive institutional settings, is the cleanest available test and does not require cross-national data.

The Role of Language: Stabilization, Not Causation

An earlier formulation of the colonial cognition argument attributed closed-system cognitive states primarily to colonial language structures. This formulation was directionally correct but mechanistically imprecise. Language does not directly produce constrained cognitive states. NR3C1 methylation produces them. BH4 depletion produces them. Language structures, including the categorical, subject-object-separated, binary-valenced structures of colonial institutional English, stabilize, express, and normalize these states at scale.

The distinction is scientifically critical. If language directly causes closed-system cognition, the intervention is linguistic: change the language. If language stabilizes states caused by biological mechanisms driven by social-environmental conditions, the intervention is environmental: change the conditions that produce chronic adversity, and language use will shift as the biological states shift. AST predicts the second model. The linguistic network density proxy (Section 5.5) tests this directly: if linguistic network breadth covaries with biological markers of stress and monoaminergic function, the causal arrow runs from biology to language expression, not the other way around.

This does not diminish the political importance of linguistic analysis. Colonial language structures matter precisely because they are the surface expression of institutionalized constrained states; they encode closed-system cognition in laws, diagnostic manuals, educational curricula, and social norms, making it harder to change the conditions that produce those states in the first place. The mechanism is real. The causal direction is what requires revision.
