It was his birthday, so of course, after cozying up to the “good guy” Iranians, Trump blamed the people who use oil and gasoline. Was this delusional, or are all the negative posts against the war because of the price of gasoline, just more deepfake propaganda from bots paid for by Iranian oil money?

The price of gas was too great for Americans to endure. Yet Israel, which has been fighting valiantly since tribal times, had no say in this deal, and will probably be told that self-defense is now illegal for Jews to object to, since the USA surrendered, even though Israel was not a party to the agreement.

How to Win a War

We can argue about the niceties, but the only way to permanently stop a war is to win.

Lasting peace is a simple two-step process:

1. Inflict unbearable pain on the aggressor’s civilian population, and

2. Inflict more pain until the leadership accepts unconditional surrender.

One side has to impose unbearable pain until the other side sues for peace. This is difficult to do with Iran, because the more people they lose, the prouder Iran is of their sacrifice, and the less people Iran has to feed. Since the money the US is sending to Iran will surely go for rebuilding armament, expect Trump to double down and send humanitarian aid to the Iranian people!

Trump extracted nothing of value from Iran, and gave away Hormuz, the threat to the regime, and the security of Israel, which he had pledged.

The irony of Iran’s victory over the United States of America is that we could see Iran making a case against the USA for reparations and postwar assistance. The Geneva Convention, requires humanitarian aid to the civilian population, read any civilian population, which is this case is the population of the aggressor, Iran. The Iranian people have been starved and brutalized for 47 years and the reward to the Iranian theocracy is that the US will get to feed them.

Iran could also make a case against Israel because Israel continues to defend itself against Iran’s proxies who want the productive riches of Israel, achieved by determination to make the desert bloom. Israel built a modern productive economy, which was formerly home to sand, camels, and Bedouins in tents.

It seems that IRAN was 100% successful in embarrassing Trump into the shame of surrender because Trump wanted a neat gift of a “peace deal” on his 80^th birthday. How many men in the world can say that! How many men would be shameless enough to even think that the surrender of the USA, which he has sworn to protect, is a suitable birthday present?

This “gift” is worse than an embarrassment; Trump has sold the USA to the dogs of war as a personal birthday gift to himself.

Antisemitism on the Rise

Since October 7^th, antisemitism, simmering in the shadows for decades, is making a virulent reprise on the world stage.

Many people have complained that “it’s always the Jews.” Thoughtful people ask why. There is one and only one good reason why it is always the Jews. That one, good, precise reason explains all the other reasons people have suggested. We’ll take that up in the next issue of Precise Thinking.

My mother died late in the year 2002. When she was alive, we bickered almost every day. I can recall only a few times when we were truly in sync.

She wanted this. I wanted that.

After Mom died, she haunted my thoughts more than when she was alive. Looking back on the last twenty-plus years in terms of selfhood, I noticed a strange phenomenon. Since she died, I have become closer to my mother than I ever was when she was alive. For years after 2002, she was active in my head, guiding my thoughts. I knew what she would and wouldn’t like if I were faced with a hard choice.

Mourning was brief, not because I was angry, but because her last years were too difficult and painful for anyone to wish prolonged. What little joy she knew turned into torture. My thinking about Mom since 2003 has never stopped, and her presence in my inner life has been a surprise and a blessing.

I am closer to my mother now than I ever was when she was alive. For the first ten years, she was very active in my head, sometimes impinging on my thoughts. I knew what she would and wouldn’t like if I were faced with hard choices.

Also, I knew when I was right for me, why I was right, and mostly still do, but Mom’s point of view was always cogent. Thinking of her often made me think twice about what I wanted to do.

She was the other half of “I want to do this or want to do that.” Mom represented the why or why not.

Maybe, after considering her possible diverse opinions, I realized that Mom might have suggested some small adjustments when she was alive that would have been better than my initial plan. So Mom became my personal Yoda, but always more beautiful. Our relationship worked because there’s no personality to her. Just two different approaches to dealing with the facts and how she would have viewed the options.

There was no “I’m an adult now” versus “I’m your mother, and I know you’ll be better off doing….”

I could tell more than a few stories about Mom when she was alive and ornery. Three stories and one picture stand out:

• The one time in my life that I wanted my mother instead of Nanny.

• .The story of a futile family search for lunch.

• The picture of Mom glowing with happiness in 1976.

• Her last outrageous pronouncement.

However, these stories are for another time. The point here is that shortly after her death, she was with me almost every day. My ability to learn from Mom’s wisdom after she was gone was as if she hadn’t been gone at all.

Shakespeare wrote in his play, Julius Caesar,

“The evil that men do live after them. The good is oft interred with their bones.”

After twenty-plus years, we (Mom and I) still consult about the really hard stuff, but less often than every day. Mom is still present deep in my brain, but the last twenty years of occasional listening to her ghostly opinions on hard choices mean she is alive enough in my inner self to remain my sage.

And this, I think, is how people survive after their own death, by being in someone else’s head as a force for good, proving Shakespeare wrong.

I don’t miss her because I have her and love her more than ever. Maybe she was the “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” element in my life.

To be honest, she would disparage my current relationship with her memory, but eventually she’d come around. Deep down, I know she would be pleased. She always wanted the best for me. And for so many disagreements, as much as I complained, she turned out to be right often enough to be grateful.

Peace with Mom in my head is certainly easier than without her. I feel that we have become closer, but, of course, objectively, I’m still in the world, and she is… gone. However, not gone from my mind, and now, alive on this page.

Mom’s Happiest Snapshot, June 1976

This story about prunes, by rights, should start with the prunes, but since this is a story about people and prunes, we will start with the people.

Here in the first picture above are Mom and Dad in 1944, happy and hopeful on the left, and on the right, he’s off to war, and both are worried. These are my only two pictures of them alone together. My late mother made a small family photo album in 2002, after Dad died. On the right, you can see the sergeant stripes on his sleeve. The letter T below the stripes indicates he was a technical sergeant, in charge of things rather than people. In his case, the things were trucks. His job was to keep the trucks running to supply the army with food and equipment at the front in Normandy, France. These photos are of the spring and fall before he left for Europe.

The pictures show their mood before and after the war got personal. Before, they were looking in the same direction. After, their outlooks diverge. The picture is only a snapshot in time. But for me, the pictures explained their relationship. Remarkably, they were looking in different directions, with different points of view, and seemed never to be quite in sync for the next 48 years.

Most stories about moral virtues emphasize the negative, so by custom, you might expect this story to really be about dishonesty, and if that’s your hope, you will be disappointed. No one in this story lies.

In the winter of 1950, my father was going to drive from our apartment in the Bronx to Albany. Somehow, my mother wanted him to take me along. I had a vague idea that it was a long trip, but the chance to be alone with my handsome and mysterious Daddy made me excited beyond words.

Mommy packed my little suitcase and the lunch box. She also held up a small brown paper bag. “These are the prunes. Make sure your father eats the prunes. They’re not for you, but you can have one for lunch if you like.” She put the brown bag in the lunch box.

There was no direct route from the Bronx to Albany, so the cars had to go on local roads, and there was a lot of construction. The road was like a washboard, and the car went up and down with many bumpity-bumps. I thought it was the greatest thing that the car was bumping along the road so much that I was bumping way up and down on my seat. This was before seat belts and child safety seats. I loved the bumping, and was bored when we got to the smooth road, and I didn’t bump anymore.

We stopped for lunch on the way to Albany. It was winter. It was very cold. The car’s heater was just adequate, but Daddy couldn’t leave it running while the car was stopped. I was on a special trip with my Daddy, cold didn’t matter. We had to get out and eat our lunch standing next to a big, metal barrel with a fire in it. There were some men and big boys standing around the barrel to keep warm as well. I was the only girl.

The men and big boys were throwing in more wood and paper to keep the fire going. So, we were standing near the fire, keeping warm and eating. I ate my lunch, then remembered the prunes. So I got the prunes out of the lunchbox, and I gave the brown paper bag to Daddy.

“Mommy says you have to eat the prunes.”

As usual, my father didn’t say much: “Do you want one?”

“No.”

And he tossed the bag of prunes into the fire.

Albany was even colder, but Nanny Lena’s apartment was warm, and she had a stove that burned wood in the kitchen. I think we stayed one night, and then drove home.

The day after we got home, my father went to work, and my mother asked me, “What happened to the prunes?”

“Daddy threw them into the fire.”

Mom looked at me hard. She didn’t say anything.

Some days later, my father said to me, “Ilene, let’s go for a ride.” We went in the car together, and he drove around the corner to the next block. We were alone.

He said, “Why did you tell your mother that I threw the prunes into the fire?”

“She asked me.”

My father didn’t say anything.

When I remember this winter of the prunes, I am overwhelmed with a sense of being blessed. To be accurate, they didn’t praise me either. They kept their evaluations to themselves.

A query to ChatGPT about lying reported that the consensus is that lying is generally considered a weak strategy, and the app gave a list of different deflection strategies and a white lie strategy. The bottom line seems to be that weak people find excuses to lie; it takes courage to face reality, pause, and if you value the person, summon up the words and the courage to tell the truth. It often takes courage to tell the truth.

The surprise is that, despite their apparent divergence in outlook, they were an unbreakable unit, looking in two different directions. Bickering over their differences, but where it counted, they were always together on related aspects of the issues that mattered.

Of course, truth can be told in a brutal or caring way. Caring is better. Speak when you’re ready. Keep it real, tell the truth with the strength, dignity, and grace that the truth deserves, even if it’s only about prunes.

It’s the honest way to preserve your own selfhood, but it was not enough.

If you did the math, you may have noticed a contradiction: 1944 plus 48 years brings the story to 1992. You might have guessed that the last ten years were different.

Young Girl Facing Dragons

An Unexpected Answer, 1963

The young girl walked home from school considering an optional composition for the senior year seminar, Problems Facing Mankind Today. It could be about the Atomic Age, or Man versus Machine, or Problems with Welfare, or a Cure for Cancer, or any other problem men happen to have. The girl vowed to ask the wisest person about this question.

When she got home, he was there and in response to her question, her father said, “The problem facing Man today is that Man cannot face it.”

The answer was so direct and shocking that it took the girl some seconds to comprehend. Then she was elated that her father was even wiser than she had known. She was also reverent of this fact. The girl finished her afternoon glass of milk and began to ponder the wonderful answer. Her father realized that the girl understood the secret, and was silent.

With her new knowledge, the girl delved deep into thought. She decided that the best way to face a problem was to think. No problem could be solved by mere action. The worst way to face a problem is by scheming, because the problem soon comes back even worse, like the boomerang of World War II, when Russia, China, Korea and Cuba revealed that their leaders were adversaries, not allies.

The girl imagined herself as a knight on the white steed of Truth. As each fire-breathing problem appeared, she must annihilate it quickly and not try to avoid it because she knew that the growing dragon might someday pursue her instead of the other way around. Above all, honesty would be her most important asset when facing a problem; a problem must be recognized for what it is. The girl ended the matter by going to the kitchen for an apple.

This quiet moment marked the beginning of the girl’s adult selfhood, the gradual forming of who she would become. When she read Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged in 1966, her course was set. Her devotion to deep thinking continued.

During the Vietnam War, the girl became a woman. She recognized the hateful unfairness of the draft. That injustice ended in 1973. The professionalism of the US all-volunteer military proved that justice for all is not simply a catch-phrase but an excellent and conclusive demonstration that the moral is the practical.

The St. Louis bridge over the Mississippi River

Ayn Rand imagined a bridge. Her inspiration was real, built in 1874.

In Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand presents the world with a monumental image: the Taggart Bridge spanning the Mississippi River. Dagny Taggart makes it her strictest rule to keep the bridge in perfect condition. The bridge is not merely a structure of steel and stone; it is an anchor, binding the industrial East to the vast farmlands of the West. Every transcontinental journey depends on the Taggart Bridge. If it fails, the system it supports collapses.

In the real world, the Eads Bridge at St. Louis echoes the story Ayn Rand told in Atlas Shrugged.

Ferry service across the Mississippi River in the 1800s was slow, expensive, and dangerous. Shipwrecks on its waters were frequent. As a young man, James B. Eads began by recovering the lost cargoes from wrecked steamboats. Then, self-taught, he designed a new salvage boat and turned his early interest into a profitable enterprise. By the late 1850s, he had become wealthy by reclaiming losses from the depths of the river.

In 1867, Eads proposed and designed a massive fixed bridge that would largely eliminate the need for ferries, making the dangerous ship crossing unnecessary. Eads insisted that the bridge be anchored in the bedrock.

The ferryboat captains, unsurprisingly, took strong exception to his plan—just as the fictional ferrymen opposed Nat Taggart’s bridge in Atlas Shrugged.

Two smaller bridges were built upriver of the Eads. Neither was anchored to bedrock, nor did either bridge endure.

The Eads Bridge was the first bridge to carry tracks for railroad traffic across the Mississippi. Pneumatic caissons were sunk to the unprecedented depth of 123 feet.

The Eads Bridge crossing the Mississippi at St. Louis was completed in 1874. Before its official opening, the public demanded proof of its strength. In one dramatic test, 10,000 people paid for the privilege of being among the first to walk across the new bridge. John Robinson’s Circus led an elephant across the span, followed by fourteen locomotives. The spectacle helped quiet fears about the unfamiliar use of steel.

Andrew Carnegie personally traveled to St. Louis to observe his specially fabricated steel perform under load and stress. The Eads Bridge was the first major bridge in the world to use steel as its primary structural material. Carnegie’s high-strength steel was far superior to iron. The Eads Bridge proved the advantage of steel over iron. The Eads Bridge also combined a truss with an arch, a detail Ayn Rand also used in Atlas Shrugged for Rearden Metal. Steel was to iron in reality what Rearden Metal is to steel in Atlas Shrugged.

On July 4, President Ulysses S. Grant dedicated the Eads Bridge before an audience of 150,000 people, followed by an evening of fireworks. With the controversy now settled, the bridge carried rail, road, and foot traffic across the Mississippi River—an unprecedented integration for its time. Spanning 1.22 miles (1.96 kilometers), the Eads Bridge stood not merely as a feat of engineering but as a monumental expression of human ingenuity and confidence in a new era.

Structural Profile of the Eads Bridge

At the opening of the bridge, a reporter asked if Eads was relieved that his bridge had passed the test. He answered, “No. I was not relieved. I had no anxiety.”

The real first use of combining a truss with an arch was on the Eads Bridge! Readers can recall a telephone call between Dagny and Rearden in Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand used these engineering innovations to dramatic effect in her novel.

To reach that bedrock, Eads had descended into the river’s depths using pressurized caissons of his own design. He did not speculate about what lay beneath the surface—he knew. He had seen the bedrock, tested it, and anchored his structure to it.

The result was a bridge built not merely to stand, but to endure. More than 150 years later, it still carries traffic across the Mississippi.

Eads built his bridge to endure by anchoring it to bedrock. He achieved his structural plan by using reason: observing, thinking, calculating, testing, and acting in accordance with reality. The Eads Bridge is still in use today for vehicles and the St. Louis MetroLink light rail.

We think, we plan, we reason. We must guide our values, decisions, and actions across the span of a lifetime. We call that complex process rationality.

When we use reason anchored to reality, we endure.

Some achievements are not surpassed. They redefine the scale of the possible.

More than a photograph could ever capture, this painting, on the wall of my office in Florida, recaptures the respect he deserved and the respect I had for him, making his own way when New York City was the place in the world for artists to draw and paint nudes from life.

Jim Brown wisely advised me to show examples of selfhood, so this painting of Jeremiah is just that: two selves are revealed. First, Jeremiah is self-contained, self-satisfied, self-confident, and relaxed in his pose, and self-satisfied with his approach to life in New York. And second, Ilene, the artist, is excited to have the challenge not only to capture his likeness, but his attitude, confidence, and overall self-possession, his selfhood.

Sixteen years after this short encounter in 2010, Jeremiah is still alive in my memory, and I experience an inner smile every time I look up from my desk and see him across the room. For me, Jeremiah’s selfhood as represented in this little painting is a part of my day, and my awareness of him as a good and worthy person whom I have known is made manifest.

Yes, my feelings could be called “selfish” because only I benefit from them, but the word selfish is entirely inadequate to express my overflowing joy. Also, since Jeremiah is here on the wall, anyone in the room can see him and react (or not at all). That doesn’t change Jeremiah for me in the least. The word “selfish” is inadequate for a second reason: you are seeing Jeremiah for the first time at the heading of this article. Does that change anything for me? No. You may like the painting or hate it. You will never have the experience of creating it, which added to my accomplishments, pride, and sense of self, my selfhood. Nothing you do could change that except the destruction of the picture, and of course, my own death, when my selfhood ends.

The problem with the word "selfish" as a positive descriptor is that people are more opposed to it today than they were when Ayn Rand introduced it in The Virtue of Selfishness (1960s).

At that time, some dictionary definitions described selfishness as “concern with one’s own interests.” Ayn Rand’s usage was novel, but plausible. Today, all the dictionaries I have found say something like “concerned with one’s own interest, to the harm or detriment of others.”

Some Objectivists tried to add to the definition by saying concern for one’s own interests without hurting others, but that doesn’t work because a definition usually needs two positive elements. Rational self-interest was always more accurate to Ayn Rand’s intention.

You can fall back on “rational self-interest,” which has not changed in the 69 years since Atlas Shrugged was published, but society’s acceptance of selfishness as a positive is not likely anytime soon. Objectivists can continue fighting this lost battle or find an alternative with the benefit of a positive, trending etymological history. The word selfhood is such a word.

I, for one, think selfhood is an attainment— a special feeling about oneself, the feeling I had when I was 19 and first reading Atlas Shrugged. Maybe you have had this feeling too. At the beginning of the book, I became so excited, I knew that this was a book for me, I started over and read very, very carefully.

I remember somewhere about 2/3 through the book, looking up from the page, and thinking to my 19-year old self, yes, this is my life, this will be my life. That feeling has never changed through good times and bad. That’s what I call selfhood.

For many years, people who admire the philosophy of rational self-interest have run into the same small but stubborn problem: the word selfishness. However carefully it is defined, the word carries a heavy burden from everyday language. To most people, “selfish” suggests pettiness, indifference to others, or grabbing more than one’s share. That is not what thoughtful advocates of rational self-interest usually mean. What they mean is something much simpler and more humane: the idea that a person’s own life matters, and that each of us has both the right and the responsibility to live it thoughtfully.

Because of this, it may be worth considering a different word—one that expresses the same idea without the unnecessary baggage. A promising candidate is selfhood.

Selfhood is not a strange or invented construction. It follows a very familiar pattern in English. We already use words like childhood, adulthood, brotherhood, manhood, and womanhood. In each case, the ending “-hood” simply refers to the condition or state of being something. Childhood is the state of being a child. Adulthood is the state of being an adult. In the same way, selfhood simply means the condition of being a self.

What do you think of the word selfhood to replace selfish?

That small shift in wording can make a large difference in tone. Instead of beginning a discussion by defending “selfishness,” which many listeners instinctively distrust, the conversation can begin with a more obvious and agreeable fact: every human being is a self. Each of us sees the world from our own point of view. Each of us thinks, chooses, and acts from our own center of awareness. Our lives unfold through that individual perspective.

Seen this way, the idea behind rational self-interest becomes less controversial and more natural. If each person is a self, then it makes sense that each person must take responsibility for living his or her own life. Caring about one’s own thinking, work, character, and happiness is not something suspicious; it is simply part of taking one’s selfhood seriously.

Using the word "selfhood" also highlights something positive. The emphasis is not on grabbing or competing with others, but on the fact that a human being has an individual consciousness with an individual life to live. From that recognition flow the qualities that sustain a good life: thinking clearly, making independent choices, producing, creating, building relationships, and pursuing goals that give life meaning.

Appreciating each individual’s selfhood is respectful, and benevolent — it’s the concept of self that can help us more easily find “our kinds of people." When we know ourselves and like ourselves we can recognize people who inspire us to be our best version of our own self, our selfhood.

Of course, no single word solves every philosophical problem without careful explanation of the context and meaning. And no one is obliged to adopt a new term simply because it is suggested. But sometimes language quietly shapes how ideas are received, remembered, adopted and become language — the shared wisdom of a culture. When a word carries centuries of misunderstanding, it can obscure the very idea it is meant to express.

Selfhood may offer a clearer starting point. It names something that is already true of every person: we are selves, each living one life from a unique point of view. Recognizing that fact does not set us against others. Instead, it reminds us that a healthy society is made up of individuals who take their own lives, choices, ambitions and responsibilities seriously.

In that sense, the idea of selfhood is not radical at all. It is simply a friendly and straightforward way of acknowledging the dignity of being a human individual.

Humans develop cultural practices and pass them to their descendants. Isolated cultures develop independently. The oldest practices for any particular culture support survival: for example, stone arrowheads for hunting and pottery for cooking. Here are some facts:

1. Independent invention of hunting technology

One of the clearest examples is the development of stone projectile points for hunting.

• In North America, Paleo-Indians produced the famous Clovis points around 13,000 years ago.

• In Europe and Asia, earlier hunter-gatherers had already developed stone spear points and blades.

• In southern Africa, Middle Stone Age cultures made finely worked spearheads long before that.

These technologies appear independently in multiple regions because hunting large animals required the same basic solution: a sharp, durable point attached to a shaft.

Most people recognize this from museum displays or textbooks showing arrowheads and spear points from different continents that look strikingly similar.

2. Pottery emerging separately in multiple regions

Pottery is another survival-oriented practice that arose independently.

• The oldest known pottery comes from East Asia (China and Japan) around 18,000–20,000 years ago.

• Pottery appeared much later in the Americas, but was developed independently by Indigenous cultures.

• Early Near Eastern societies also created pottery as they settled into agriculture.

Pottery allowed people to:

• boil foods (including grains and roots)

• store water

• preserve surplus harvests

Many people recognize early pottery traditions, such as the Jōmon culture in Japan, which is famous for its cord-marked pottery dating back more than 14,000 years.

3. Agriculture emerged in several parts of the world

Perhaps the most dramatic example of independent cultural development is agriculture.

Major agricultural systems arose separately in different regions:

• Fertile Crescent — wheat and barley farming

• Yellow River Valley — millet farming

• Mesoamerica — maize domestication

• Andes — potatoes and quinoa

These developments occurred thousands of years apart and among populations with no contact, yet they all reflect the same survival pressure: a reliable food supply.

Most people recognize the domestication of maize by early American civilizations as a classic historical example. In the islands of Hawaii and the South Pacific, only Hawaii is large enough to produce agricultural products on a worldwide industrial scale.

4. Shelter technologies across climates

Different cultures independently developed housing suited to their environments:

• Igloo among Inuit peoples for Arctic survival

• Yurt among Central Asian nomads

• Longhouse used by some Indigenous North American groups

Each solution uses locally available materials and meets the same basic need: protection from the weather.

5. Fire use and cooking practices

The controlled use of fire is nearly universal in human societies.

Evidence of controlled fire goes back hundreds of thousands of years, often associated with Homo erectus.

Cooking:

• increases calorie availability

• reduces toxins

• preserves food

These survival advantages explain why every human culture eventually developed cooking traditions.

The historical and archaeological record strongly supports three ideas:

1. Early cultural practices centered on survival (food, tools, shelter, cooking).

2. Isolated cultures often independently invent similar solutions.

3. These early solutions form the foundation for later cultural complexity.

In other words, culture does not begin with abstract philosophy or art — it begins with practical techniques for staying alive. Art, religion, and philosophy typically emerge after societies achieve some stability and surplus.

The purpose of this post is to clarify why a preemptive US strike on Iran, although controversial, addresses a major global threat. Iran being months away from a nuclear bomb is not just a U.S. problem, but an existential risk to the world.

This post uses the standards of precise thinking and Ayn Rand’s moral framework to evaluate the necessity and justification of decisive action against Iran. The intent is to offer clear analysis, define the core moral actors, and confront the reality of the ongoing conflict without evasion or emotional appeals.

The following overview highlights major aggressive acts by Iranian terrorists, Iran-sponsored terrorist groups, and state actors since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. These acts include well-documented assassinations, bombings, attacks, hijackings, and proxy-led violence. “Iran-sponsored” refers to actions carried out by groups directly supported, trained, financed, equipped, or directed by Iran’s government or by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), particularly its Quds Force. The IRGC-QF is frequently designated by the U.S. and other governments for terrorist activities.

In 1600, England stood out as the freest country in Europe. Ruled for over 40 years by the benevolent and mostly hands-off Elizabeth I, freedom meant religious freedom and the opportunity to escape the bonds of serfdom. Immigrants flooded in, especially from rigid, authoritarian France. Modernity was on the rise. In the arts, Shakespeare, a playwright, led the charge, setting a backdrop for new ideas about selfhood and truth.

William Shakespeare knew his audience. In Act I, Scene III, Polonius gives his son, Laertes, advice as he leaves for college in Paris. The Sorbonne students embraced the play as an engraved invitation to travel to London.

They traveled to London to see Hamlet for themselves. The play’s most famous soliloquy, “To be or not to be, that is the question…” was unaskable in France. Students returned repeatedly, copying the speech to bring back to France. Hamlet became a rite of passage to experience in person.

Shakespeare is often credited as the first author of modern English. His line “to thine own self be true” ties honesty to the self. In Hamlet, this line serves as a tease, a polite social nicety. However, the reference to “thy own self” raises an original thought: there is value in a moral virtue, both personally and socially. Honesty ultimately fails in Hamlet, not because of its goodness (Shakespeare’s view), but because it lacks the structure that future thinkers would add.

Ayn Rand, in the twentieth century, understood honesty as more than a social virtue. In The Objectivist Ethics, she identified Rationality, Productivity, and Pride as major virtues, with honesty as a component of rationality.

Understanding Rand’s view, rationality is the use of your mind to understand the world. Your rational faculty can function only when you ground your thinking in your honest assessment of reality. Without honesty, there is no logical structure to guide your actions. Honesty is a survival practice—loyalty to reality as the precondition of self-preservation.

Two American Presidents made their reputations on truthfulness. A young George Washington accepted responsibility for a mishap, saying, “Father, I cannot tell a lie.” Abraham Lincoln was known affectionately as Honest Abe,

Honesty as a virtue is implicit — “do not lie,” for children between ages three and five. As we mature, the meaning of honesty becomes more complex and foundational.

Seen this way, honesty sits at the base of rationality, anchoring man’s fidelity both to reason as his means of survival and to the reality in which he lives. This foundation links the philosophical to the practical.

To be honest is to refuse to fake reality—to keep one’s consciousness aligned with facts because one’s life depends on it. The “self” to which one must be true is not a feeling, a role, or a persona, but the reasoning mind in a human body whose life is conditional. In this sense, honesty is not altruistic or sacrificial; it is a tool of self-preservation.

Hamlet, written in 1602, is Shakespeare’s most performed play and a study of “good” intentions failing in the absence of a rational moral structure. Polonius’s advice, “To thine own self be true,” reflects a vain hope rather than a method. Ayn Rand’s philosophy would emerge centuries later, so Hamlet stands as a vivid examination of what results when honesty is abandoned or replaced with dishonesty.

Ayn Rand frequently spoke of a “hierarchy of values,” and in doing so left open the work of discovery rather than closing it off. The purpose of this essay is not to revise that hierarchy, but to stand gratefully beside her achievement and identify its base: honesty, the ground beneath rationality, from which we come to understand the rest. This provides a clear path for further exploration.

As a result, we can view Hamlet as a brilliant case study of honesty abandoned at every turn. The results are death: by stabbing while hiding behind a hanging rug (Polonius), drowning (Ophelia), and suicide (Hamlet). The fact that Ayn Rand’s philosophy came 350 years later must not count against the Bard’s work. Hamlet is still a play worth knowing. It is a graphic depiction of the damage of abandoning reality for the sake of wishful thinking or irrational motives.

Mary is monumental. She has to be. She was intended to be. Jesus is near death…he will soon be gone. Mary, alone, will survive. Michelangelo, the sculptor who made her, had a distant, ill-suited mother who died young. Lorenzo di Medici, who commissioned the sculpture for the Pope, had lost the love of his life and soulmate, Clarice Orsini, ten years before. She was his wife and the mother of his ten children; Lorenzo mourned her still. He needed a monument.

Standing, Mary would be seven feet tall. This is art with intention, not mistake. In fact, her size is a clue to Michelangelo’s intention. The artist explains, “It is necessary to keep one’s compass in one’s eyes, and not the hand, for the hands execute, but the eye judges.” Jesus is life-sized. Mary, as she accepts her role of sorrow and strength, demands to be monumental. Here we shall see further how the artist achieves his vision.

We continue with careful observation, noting that Ayn Rand said, rightly,

“…the base of all of man’s knowledge is the perceptual stage.”

Under massive marble robes, Mary sets her right leg on a platform. Her raised thigh supports Jesus as her right arm cradles his back. We see the fingers of her right hand splayed on the cloth of her robe. We see Jesus’ ribs continue to direct our eyes down the slope of his body to his legs, his left arm and Mary’s upraised left palm, just visible beyond his knee. The open palm has been, and is still, a universal human sign of acceptance — another clue that Mary accepts the world, and continues.

Jesus is looking out at his future and destiny. Mary’s head is bowed, but her eyes are wide open. Mary’s face is almost directly above Jesus’ navel, the original point of attachment between mother and child. Mary’s wide eyes imply that she is no longer focused on the navel, but in contemplation of the entire sequence of Jesus’ life, annunciation, birth, childhood, rebellion, sentence and demise. All of those memories are awakened by Jesus, dying in her arms. Mary represents strength and acceptance in the face of tragedy and loss. Respect for the sanctity of life and the finality of death. No celebration. No tears, no religious symbols. Most important of all, Mary is at peace with the reality of herself, radiating harmony of body, mind and spirit —a third clue.

We are therefore recommended by our fidelity to truth, to perceive the world before we judge it, and each of us to judge it by the standard of our own life applied directly to the world we perceive. If we are interested in the artwork, if we love art, it behooves us to think about the creator of the work, and what message Michelangelo may have intended to send to the world.

This is especially true of Mary’s role in the Pietà. She is the Christian symbol of motherhood. However, without any religious symbology, she can be the story of any mother, religious symbols neither evident nor needed — the fourth clue.

Yet, we notice that this young woman is too young to be the mother of the man across her lap. Is this accidental? No! It is intention — the fifth clue.

When Michelangelo refused to apologize to the Pope for the youth of Mary, the Pope thought to bring the city fathers of Florence against the artist. The Pope called them to the draped sculpture of the Pietà, and when it was unveiled, and the Pope posed the question of Mary’s age. The city fathers of Florence were indignant, saying that of course the Mother of God would not age like mortal women. She would show her youth and innocence for a lifetime. The Pope had to relent. This is our sixth clue — the people’s acceptance of Michelangelo’s intention.

Even so, the controversy of the city fathers of Florence had another bothersome leg, and this time the Pope had no answer. The city fathers were so overwhelmed by the beauty of the sculpture and its fidelity to human form they declared that the statue was made by God, Himself, and that God placed the sculpture in the church as a reward for the glory of Florence.

“No mortal man could have made this! This is God’s work by his own hand!”

The Pope had no answer, but Michelangelo was hiding in a nearby apse. During the night, the artist added his answer to the blank sash across Mary’s chest:

MICHÆLANGELVS BONAROTVS FLORENTINVS FACIEBAT

(English: “Michelangelo Buonarroti the Florentine made this”)

The Pope called the city fathers in again to see the sash. Yes, they relented and agreed that God had given Michelangelo the skill, and had charged Michelangelo with this task. There was no compromise between the role of God and the role of man except for the most significant: Michelangelo had shown mankind what a single individual could do. As piety ruled the day, everyone agreed, including Michelangelo, that God had shown, through the artist, what mortal Man could achieve.

The birth of secularism was foretold in the Pietà. Whether by the artist’s intention or by implication of our own hindsight, we see in Michelangelo’s Pietà the evidence of human worldly vision, focused intention and consummate skill, the hallmark of truely great art.

Mary, birthing, nurturing and abiding is the strength and inspiration. The proof is the message on her sash, that a mortal man can accomplish the unimaginable, the unbelieveable. This is our seventh and final clue — the first sculpture to be signed in the modern, western world. The message is with us to this day.

When I read Atlas Shrugged in September of 1966, I was 19. This sentence stayed with me:

“To hold an unchanging youth is to reach at the end, the vision with which one started.”

I was always interested in how things came to be. My children’s picture bible started with God and the seven days of Creation. There was a man in the clouds. I asked my mother, “Is that God?”

“No, it’s a picture.”

“But is that what God looks like?”

“No.”

“But how do you know it’s God.”

“Because that’s what the story says.”

“But how do you know He’s real.”

“…you can read about God in big books.”

The story of Adam and Eve made me scared of snakes, but my takeaway was that apples made people smart. Wow!

My mother read to me a lot, and I loved that. When I was four, learning to read became my highest desire. I thought reading was the key into this mysterious grownup world. Reading would help me understand.

When I read Atlas in 1966, the world was new again.

I didn’t find all the answers, but I did find something far more important — I found myself and in celebration, I wrote this poem.

Adam’s Song

Temptation’s taste lies guiltless on my tongue

For those who would love liberty to kiss.

While snickering the Serpent slyly sung

A tune to render Eden much amiss.

By giving Man the burden to know pain,

And death and war and holocaust and age,

The Serpent sought to teach Man to complain,

And turn to humble fool who now is sage.

But only open eyes can clearly see

The wondrous beauty that is naked Eve,

Thus little patience have I with decree

That happiness is not mine to achieve.

For apples, I have paid no higher stake,

Than to live and learn and love for my own sake.

A subscriber shared his Pietà experience:

“Ayn Rand was a genius. And while I didn’t know how to think about reality (or thinking itself) until I read Rand, when I was nineteen years old I strolled into the Vatican and stumbled upon La Pietà. … I inexplicably fell to my knees and sobbed like a baby. I’m approaching fifty-nine years of age and have never reacted to a piece of art like that before or since. … What an unexpected reaction.”

The story of the Crucifixion tells us that Jesus died on the cross, that he was taken down and delivered to Mary, who wept. There are many versions of this story; Michelangelo’s version in marble, finished in 1499, continues to elicit deep and surprising emotions—like those expressed above by a subscriber. Once encountered, especially in person, the Pietà is almost impossible to forget.

Before conclusions, then, before concepts, before words — is the perceptual stage; we look. And if we intend to see deeply, we look slowly, and thoughtfully at the stone, the man of stone, and the art in the stone.

In the detail above, we see the face of Jesus as he lies across Mary’s lap. His eyes are slightly open, showing the curved and delicate edges of the eyelids as if he were resting half asleep rather than extinguished. His mouth is soft—upper and lower lips relaxed, parted just enough to reveal a hint of teeth. The chin is firm, not slack. There is no strain in the face, no collapse.

By contrast, in death, the eyes flatten and sink into their sockets. The mouth stiffens in its dying position; the flesh loses its tension. Here, we see none of these clues of demise. This is the face of a living man—sculpted by Michelangelo to play the role of Jesus.

One might think the model was a man half-awake, dozing. But Michelangelo rarely worked from live models. He sketched rapid drawings, from memory, and from an unmatched understanding of human anatomy and its dynamics. The dozing man—if there ever was one—and the sculptor, himself have long since died. Yet the Pietà remains fully present in our world.

And that fact raises a quiet but decisive question.

If the face before us is not the face of death, then what, exactly, are we looking at?

This is where the artist completes his work—not by explaining, not by instructing, but by asking something of the viewer. The sculpture does not tell us whether this is the final moment of life or the first stillness after it. It does not resolve the question. The sculpture places itself—gently, inexorably—into our awareness.

And awareness requires an action, look again.

To stand before this face and really see it is already a choice.

Not a theological choice. Not yet a philosophical one. A perceptual choice.

Looking closely, what more do we learn about the man in the stone, the art, and the artist?

We resume our exploration with what the eye can register before interpretation takes over. The human face follows certain patterns. Living flesh holds itself together; dead flesh yields. Eyelids settle differently. The mouth changes. Structure loosens. These are not cultural ideas so much as physical facts—things we recognize long before we have words for them.

Seen in that light, the face before us is curious. The eyes are not closed. The mouth is relaxed, not slack. The chin holds its form. This face does not read as having surrendered to death. That perception alone does not explain the sculpture—but it does invite attention.

And attention, once engaged, naturally turns toward the artist, and his intention.

Michelangelo’s choices here are deliberate, though not explanatory. He does not dramatize suffering. He does not insist on despair. He does not clarify this, the final moment of life, on the edge of eternity. Instead, he holds the moment open. The effect is not confusion so much as creative ambiguity —a pause in which more than one meaning is possible at the same time.

This may be what gives the sculpture its unusual staying power. It approaches the story from the moment of anticipation. It does not settle the story for us, instead we see it happening. It is the story of the man, Jesus on the brink of meeting his destiny. To the atheist, it is his death. To the Christian, it is God the Son, and a promise of eternal life. To Michelangelo, both can be simultaneously true. We are looking at it in the process as a great soul leaves the room.

That room matters, especially when we remember the cultural setting in which the Pietà was made. Michelangelo and his audience lived within a world where belief in the Crucifixion and the Resurrection was assumed—taught, reinforced, and required by the Church. The story was already known. The doctrine already established.

And yet knowing a story is not the same as encountering it as a pause on the edge of eternity.

The Pietà does not argue for belief, nor does it illustrate dogma in a straightforward way. Instead, it offers a visual experience that makes belief—whatever one’s relationship to it—feel immediate and human. For some viewers, that experience may deepen faith. For others, it may complicate it. For still others, it may simply linger without resolving into anything definite at all, yet somehow still unforgettable.

Mary’s presence seems central to this effect. We will look closely at Mary in the our third exploration of Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Michaelangelo made his famous Pieta, the marble sculpture of Mary holding a dying Jesus on her lap, so the world could be inspired by the teachings of the Church. Approximately 50 million people visit the Vatican every year. Most of them get a glimpse of this sculpture.

Ayn Rand famous definition of art:

Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value-judgments.

In my estimation, Rand’s definition is the best, clearest and most concise definition ever offered to the world. The ambition of the After Rand is that people come to realize her genius.

We can re-word Rand’s definition so that a child can understand it: an artist creates a new thing in the world to show what’s important to him, so he can see it himself, think about it, and maybe show it to others.

A child uses his crayons to draw his family, house and pets, or his supermen, monsters and sometimes his anger.

Rand was equally famous for insisting that non-objective (abstract) art is not art at all. She held that unless art presented recognizable objects, it could not qualify as art. Many of her admirers continue to treat these two claims as inseparable and valid.

My argument begins with logic. All artists are human, and all humans have value judgements. Even nihilists have value judgements: they value their hatred more than they value their life. If they get overwhelmed with hate, they end their life. Sometimes nihilists do it quietly, and sometimes they end their life making headlines, to show the world the extent of their anger and hatred.

Non-objective art is art. It is the art of nihilism, corruption, displacement and alienation. It may be art seeking order, like the designs of Mondrian. It may be the art of seeking new principles of art, like the art of Picasso. Above all the noise and confusion, the marks on a surface or blotches and drips on a canvas are evidence of each artist’s personal metaphysical value judgements of the universe he inhabits. The marks cannot be anything else.

Objectivists (and others) may evaluate this type of art as disgusting, depraved, outrageous, and horrible, but in the end, the creation, the artwork is still “a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value-judgments.” The canvas and the paint are real in the world. By the logic of Ayn Rand’s definition alone, it is art. This art was created by a human, Jackson Pollock, to realize his conception and evaluation of reality.

The fact that Jackson Pollock’s art is actually art and not some type of fraud reflects on Pollock, his nihilism and his culture which celebrated him. Art, like all other human productive endeavors, encourages the individual to use independent judgement to evaluate the work. It’s no wonder to me that Jackson Pollock did a number of these massive nihilistic canvases, each one taking days of painstaking labor to drip, fling and drop different colors of paint. His paintings gave him fame and fortune. Today, this painting hangs in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) as the leader of the Abstract Expressionist Movement in the 1940s. In 1956, Pollack, in a drunken haze, crashed his car into a tree in South Hampton, NY. He died instantly. Some think of Pollack’s death as a suicide by accident.

Ayn Rand’s quote from the Bible is apt:

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36

There is much more to say on the subject of modern art. Ayn Rand rejected the culture that Pollack embraced. Art mirrors the culture in which the artist finds his voice. Certainly Atlas Shrugged mirrors the culture of decline and decay, when the men of the mind abandon the world. In that world, it feels to Cheryl, a minor character, that there are no solid objects, no absolutes and no way out. Non-objective art mirrors the culture of that same world. Jackson Pollock’s One takes you directly to the world as Cheryl felt it at the end of her life.

The good news is that non-objective visual art is in decline and modern representational art has been on the rise since 1990.

For now, know that art always reflects the metaphysical value judgements of its creator, the aspects of reality that the creator deems important. That’s the beauty and logic of Ayn Rand’s excellent definition. To understand any artwork, as a realist, stripped for a moment from your personal emotional reaction, it is merely a matter of asking yourself, what is being depicted in this work?

One final thought of comfort to artists who have read this essay:

The project starts with Rand’s recognition that art is essential to human life, while expanding Rand’s concept of art deeper and wider than the limits of conceptual philosophy. My concept of art is grounded anthropology: the study of man as a sensate individual, capable of reason and positioned in a social context.

This project continues Rand’s quest for clarity and meaning, not by rejecting her, but by building on her foundation to understand art as a universal human practice rooted in our senses, emotions, and evolutionary and cultural history.

My goal is to make this project compelling to the widest possible audience.

Why Me? Why Ayn Rand?

When asked about Ayn Rand, President Obama quipped that everybody reads Rand, and then they grow out of it.

In 1966, I was 19, confused and alone. My life was balanced on the edge of a trap, desperate for answers. I read Rand. She had the answers. My story began there. I will tell it here, in the After Rand.

Cooking is life enhancing, possibly the primary factor in human flourishing, because cooking concentrates food energy into small, tastier and easier to digest portions than uncooked food. The benefits of being the “cooking” animal is a key to life and leisure as a human being.
