One is delicate, heavy with water, and slowly moving toward spoilage from the moment it is harvested. The other is smaller, lighter, and capable of sitting on a shelf for months. That difference matters almost everywhere, but it matters especially in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan is one of only two double-landlocked countries in the world. To reach an ocean port, an Uzbek product must cross at least two national borders. For a box of fresh grapes, every extra hour, inspection, and change of vehicle can matter. A raisin is far more patient.

This gives us a useful way to think about dried fruit. Drying is not just food processing. It is a way of redesigning a product for distance.

The problem hidden inside a fresh grape

When we see grapes in a market, transportation is probably not the first thing we think about. Yet grapes are unusually demanding travellers.

They can be crushed. They lose quality over time. They need suitable packaging, careful handling, and often refrigeration. An exporter must move them quickly enough that they still look appealing when they reach the buyer. A delay at a border does not merely make the delivery late. It may reduce the value of the product itself.

Fresh grapes also contain a great deal of water. From the consumer’s perspective, that is part of what makes them enjoyable. From the exporter’s perspective, it means paying to transport weight that will not remain in the final dried product.

The transformation is dramatic. Depending on the grape and the drying method, roughly four or five kilograms of fresh grapes may be needed to produce one kilogram of raisins. Most of the missing weight is water.

Drying therefore appears, at first, to destroy a large part of the product. But the remaining kilogram has acquired something valuable: time.

A raisin is a more patient grape

A raisin can survive a journey that would be much riskier for a fresh grape. It does not require the same uninterrupted cold chain. It occupies less weight and volume relative to its concentrated food content. It can be stored after harvest and sold later rather than being rushed onto the market immediately.

This changes the bargaining position of producers and exporters.

Imagine that thousands of farmers harvest fresh grapes during the same short period. If those grapes must be sold quickly, buyers know that time is working against the farmers. A producer cannot simply wait several months for a better offer while the fruit sits outside.

Drying does not eliminate this pressure, but it can weaken it. A product that lasts longer gives its owner more freedom over when and where to sell it. It also makes more distant markets possible. The farmer is no longer trying to outrun the biology of a fresh grape.

For a country separated from seaports by other countries, this durability is particularly useful. Uzbekistan’s trade routes depend on roads, railways, border crossings, and the cooperation of transit countries. Even when the system works well, distance costs money. When it works unpredictably, perishability makes that cost more dangerous.

The raisin does not remove Uzbekistan’s geography. It makes the product less vulnerable to it.

Removing water can add economic value

This sounds paradoxical. How can a product become more useful after losing most of its weight?

The answer is that value is not determined by weight alone. It also depends on location, timing, reliability, and what the buyer wants.

A kilogram of fresh grapes available beside the vineyard and a kilogram available in a foreign supermarket are not economically identical. Someone must sort, package, transport, and preserve the fruit between those two places. The more fragile it is, the more demanding that journey becomes.

Drying changes the calculation. The exporter ships less water and gains a longer selling window. The product can enter uses that fresh grapes cannot, including baking, confectionery, cereals, and packaged snacks. In this sense, a raisin is not simply an old grape. It is a different commercial product.

This principle extends far beyond raisins. Tomatoes become paste. Milk becomes cheese or powder. Apricots and plums become dried fruit. Cotton becomes yarn, fabric, and clothing. Each transformation changes not only the product, but also the cost and risk of moving it.

For countries far from major consumer markets, successful exporting may depend partly on choosing forms that travel well.

Drying is not a free upgrade

It would be easy to end the argument here and declare that Uzbekistan should dry every grape. That would be wrong.

Fresh grapes can command attractive prices, and Uzbekistan already exports large quantities of them. Drying requires suitable varieties, space or equipment, labor, time, hygiene, sorting, and quality control. Poor drying can cause contamination, discoloration, or inconsistent quality. Producers also lose most of the original weight, so the price per kilogram of raisins must compensate for the grapes and work used to produce them.

The best choice depends on the variety, harvest quality, available buyers, fresh-grape prices, processing costs, and access to refrigeration and transport. A grower close to a reliable high-value market may earn more by selling fresh grapes. Another facing a temporary surplus or a difficult journey may benefit from drying them.

Processing also does not solve every trade problem. Raisins still need buyers, recognized safety standards, dependable packaging, and competitive prices. A longer shelf life is helpful, but it cannot replace good logistics or market access.

So the lesson is not that processed products are always superior. It is that the physical form of a product can determine which markets it can realistically reach.

Geography does not end at the map

We often describe Uzbekistan as double-landlocked as if this were simply an interesting geographical fact. But geography enters everyday products in quiet ways. It influences which crops are profitable, how quickly goods must move, how much packaging they require, and whether one delayed truck becomes a minor inconvenience or a ruined shipment.

A raisin carries this entire story in miniature.

It begins as a fruit full of water and vulnerable to time. Through drying, it gives up weight and freshness in exchange for durability. That exchange can be especially valuable when the road to the customer is long and uncertain.

Sometimes export competitiveness begins with a new railway, a trade agreement, or a faster border crossing. Sometimes it begins with changing the product itself.

A raisin is not merely a dried grape. For a landlocked exporter, it is a grape redesigned for international trade.

The data existed, but the answer was difficult to find.

Statistics were scattered across government releases, international databases, news reports, and lengthy documents. Some sources reported export values, while others reported production or destination markets. Connecting these numbers into one clear explanation required more time than I expected.

This experience led me to create Central Asia Trade Research, an independent platform that answers specific questions about Central Asian trade by turning scattered data into clear, accessible research.

My interest in trade comes partly from where I live. Uzbekistan produces and exports large quantities of fruits, vegetables, textiles, and other goods. However, being landlocked means that reaching international markets is rarely simple. Products may cross several borders, depend on limited transport corridors, or face high delivery costs. A change in tariffs, transport routes, or demand can affect thousands of producers and traders.

These issues are economically important, but they are not always explained in a way that students and general readers can easily understand.

My first major article examined Uzbekistan’s raisin exports. The numbers revealed a striking change. Export revenue increased from about $65 million in 2024 to nearly $144 million in 2025. Yet the headline figure raised more questions than it answered. Did Uzbekistan export a larger quantity, receive a higher price, or both? Which countries bought the raisins? How are they transported? Can this growth continue?

That is the kind of question I want the platform to explore.

Each article begins with data, but the goal is not simply to display numbers. I want to connect export trends with production, destination markets, trade routes, transport constraints, and economic risks. The website also includes charts, datasets, and quizzes that help readers test what they have learned.

The project is still young, and I am learning as I build it. Finding reliable sources is difficult. Different databases sometimes report conflicting figures. A chart can look convincing even when its context is incomplete. I have learned that good research requires not only calculations, but also careful definitions, transparent sources, and a willingness to correct mistakes.

In the coming months, I plan to publish more product level research, improve the available datasets, and examine broader questions about trade policy and export diversification in Central Asia.

Russia’s GDP growth dipped (approximately -2.1% in 2022), while Uzbekistan’s surged (reaching 7.7% by 2025). Shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Russian ruble plunged to a record low, partly driven by the freezing of Russia’s foreign reserves and the resulting financial uncertainty. Another factor contributing to the ruble’s devaluation was the disruption of Russia’s trade and financial flows. Sanctions targeting Russia’s energy exports restricted access to some foreign markets and complicated international payments, reducing the country’s ability to earn and access foreign currency such as US dollars. This placed additional pressure on the ruble. Finally, sanctions disrupted Russia’s access to international financial markets and foreign investment. Restrictions on Russian banks and businesses made it more difficult for firms to obtain foreign financing, invest in new projects, and maintain international operations. This weakened economic activity and contributed to the contraction in GDP.

A major driver of this growth was remittances to Uzbekistan, which reached a record $14.8 billion in 2024. Russia remained the primary source of these transfers, meaning that Uzbekistan’s economic growth was closely connected to the same country experiencing a major economic shock. The increase in remittances may have supported domestic consumption, household incomes, and economic activity in Uzbekistan. However, this also reveals a paradox: while Uzbekistan appeared to demonstrate resilience to Russia’s economic difficulties, its growth remained partly dependent on financial flows originating from Russia.

Remittances were not the only financial flow supporting Uzbekistan’s economy. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an influx of Russian citizens also relocated to Uzbekistan, bringing capital and increasing demand for local goods and services. This created a short-term stimulus for sectors such as real estate, hospitality, and services, although the extent to which these inflows contributed to Uzbekistan’s overall GDP growth remains difficult to isolate.

2. The Shared Burden: Inflation

Both countries experienced significant increases in inflation, with Russia’s inflation rate reaching approximately 12–17% and Uzbekistan’s reaching around 12%.

Sanctions on Russia disrupted established trade and supply chains, contributing to higher prices for commodities and imported goods across the region. As Russia is an important supplier of products such as grain, fuel, and vegetable oil to Uzbekistan, disruptions to trade and changes in import costs may have contributed to additional inflationary pressure in Uzbekistan. These higher costs could then be passed on to consumers, increasing the cost of essential goods. As a result, inflation placed additional pressure on Uzbek households, particularly those with lower incomes, even as the country’s overall economy continued to grow.

3. Currency and Financial Decoupling

Uzbekistan reduced its exposure to the Russian ruble and financial system.

The Central Bank of Uzbekistan tightened monetary policy to limit pressure on the Uzbek som following the ruble’s sharp depreciation. At the same time, Uzbekistan continued efforts to diversify its trade and economic relationships, particularly by strengthening ties with China and the European Union. These measures helped reduce the country’s dependence on Russia and limited the extent to which instability in the Russian economy could directly affect Uzbekistan’s financial system. However, reducing dependence on the ruble did not mean that Uzbekistan had become independent of Russia’s economy, as remittances and labor migration continued to link the two countries closely.

Remittance Diversification: Remittances to Uzbekistan reached a record $18.9 billion in 2025. Although Russia remained the largest source of these transfers, remittances from non-traditional destinations grew considerably faster. Transfers from the United Kingdom increased by 39%, while those from the European Union rose by 37% to $563 million. Remittances from the United States also increased by 15%, reaching $665 million. This suggests that Uzbekistan’s dependence on Russia as a source of migrant income may be gradually declining as Uzbek workers increasingly seek employment in other labor markets. However, Russia remains the dominant destination for Uzbek labor migrants, meaning that diversification has reduced but not eliminated Uzbekistan’s exposure to economic shocks originating there.

Conclusion:

The sanctions on Russia did not simply isolate one economy; they reshaped economic relationships across the region. For Uzbekistan, the result was a paradox: strong economic growth alongside rising inflationary pressures and continued dependence on external economic conditions.

This raises a deeper question: how resilient is growth when some of its supporting factors depend on external developments that Uzbekistan cannot control? Uzbekistan’s recent performance is impressive, but its long-term resilience will depend on its ability to diversify its trade and sources of remittances while strengthening its domestic economy. The country may have reduced its dependence on Russia, but it has not eliminated its vulnerability to external shocks.

Perfect competition is a state described by economists as the ideal and default state of the market, where supply meets demand perfectly. In this state, the market sets the price of a particular product or service.

What if a new company enters the market? Well, in that situation, supply increases, driving the price down as a result. Too many companies give up; they cannot function with those low prices. However, there will be a number of companies, and prices go back to a sustainable amount. In the long run, no company can make a profit in this state of the market.

Companies that hold a monopoly, however, have their own markets. Those companies set their own prices and limit production to maximise their profits. Most, including me, associate monopoly with negative aspects, arguing that the power possessed by monopolists is too much. However, companies that create monopolies have certain positive aspects that allow them to do so. First and foremost, they have products or services so good that no one can offer a close substitute.

Monopolists never brag about the fact because it might cause them to get attacked, audited, or scrutinised. Therefore, they talk about the competition (non-existent) they have in the market. For example, although Google owns 68% (2014, Peter Thiel) of the search engine market, the company identifies itself as a tech company, of which it owns 0.24%.

On the other hand, non-monopolists exaggerate their distinction by focusing on and combining smaller markets. For example, you want to open an ice-cream shop in a smaller town in Tashkent. You are planning to sell only a type of ice cream made from a recipe left to you by your great-grandmother. No one else sells this type, so you might think you own the market in its entirety. But this is wrong; you are focusing on the wrong market. Your market is the entire ice-cream industry in the town, in which you are merely a small player.

A highly competitive ecosystem is increasingly ruthless, guaranteeing death to most new companies, while monopolists can enjoy large profits. Although this money comes from society’s wallet, companies that hold the relevant form of market structure make society better off. They create new things and abundance. They have so many resources that they can plan for the future and invest in R&D (Research & Development). On the other hand, companies in perfectly competitive markets fight for survival every single day.

Every successful business is a monopoly.

Sanctions on Russia disrupted supply chains. Since Russia is a top provider of grain, fuel and vegetable oil to Uzbekistan, the “Sanctioned prices” in Russia travelled across the border. As imports from Russia became more expensive, those higher costs were passed directly to Uzbek consumers. This led to a cost-of-living crisis for low-income Uzbek families, even as the overall economy grew.

3. Currency and Financial Decoupling

Uzbekistan successfully “de-ruble-ized” its economy.

The Central Bank of Uzbekistan (CBU) tightened its policy to prevent the Som from crashing alongside the Ruble. By diversifying trade (moving toward China and the EU), Uzbekistan reduced its ­­­dependency on the Russian financial system.

For the first time, China has overtaken Russia as the #1 partner, accounting for 21.2% of total trade ($17.2B), while Russia’s share has stabilized at 16% ($13B).

Labor Diversification: Remittances reached a record $18.9 billion in 2025. While Russia is still the largest source, transfers from non-traditional markets grew much faster:

• United Kingdom: +39%

• European Union: +37% (totaling $563 million)

• United States: +15% ($665 million)

Conclusion:

The sanctions on Russia did not just isolate one economy, they reshaped an entire region. For Uzbekistan, the result was a paradox: faster growth alongside rising costs of living.

This raises a deeper issue. If economic gains come from external disruption rather than domestic strength, how stable are they? Uzbekistan’s recent performance may be impressive, but its long-term resilience will depend on how well it reduces its exposure to shocks it cannot control.
