I recently attended a Kizomba dance festival. The rooms were packed with people taking classes 7 hours a day, practicing, dancing until late into the night. Kizomba may look sexy from the outside: the close embrace, the fluidity, the way two bodies move almost as one, but it isn’t a dance about sex. It’s a social and family dance, danced between friends, siblings, cousins, parents and children. The closeness is part of the language of the dance, not a sexual proposition.

People weren’t there to get laid. They were there to feel more.

What makes a dance good isn’t how many moves you know. It’s connection.

Kizomba requires presence, attunement, responsiveness, trust. You have to pay attention to another human being, not just mentally, but with your whole body.

And we’re in San Francisco: leads and follows aren’t always male or female. A female can be a lead, a male can learn to follow, which is actually a valuable skill, to know what it’s like being on the following side of things. And dancers across the gender spectrum can find themselves at home in either role.

As a follow I have to resist anticipating what my partner is going to do. If I make a move before he/she leads me there, I’ve stopped listening.

Instead, I have to feel what’s actually happening.

A shift in weight. A change in pressure. A pause. An invitation to move.

Sound familiar?

As a sex therapist. I can’t help but notice how transferable these skills are.

Good sex asks much the same of us. Not better technique, not an impressive repertoire of moves, not figuring out what comes next.

It asks us to pay attention.

To notice how the other person responds, to stay connected to our own bodies while remaining curious and attuned to theirs, to stop performing and start listening, to tolerate not knowing exactly where things are going.

And perhaps most importantly, to respond to what is actually happening rather than what we think should be happening.

There’s a delicious paradox here: the more we try to make something happen, on the dance floor or in bed, the more easily we can lose the connection that makes it good.

The skills are transferable. The intention is not.

Presence, attunement, trust, responsiveness, playfulness, the ability to listen with your body.

These are skills worth practicing anywhere we can.

Because whether we’re dancing or making love, connection doesn’t come from knowing all the right moves.

It comes from being exquisitely available to the person in front , or beside, behind, us.

So the next time you’re with someone, on the dance floor or in bed, try doing a little less and feeling a little more.

Stop worrying about the next move.

Pay attention to the person you’re with.

Notice what happens when you trade performance for presence.

I recently read an article about Esther Perel in The Atlantic that described what she calls not merely a “sex recession,” but an eroticism recession. Her argument resonated deeply with me. The problem isn’t simply that people are having less sex. It’s that many of us have drifted away from what it means to feel fully alive.

As someone who grew up in France and first visited the US at thirteen, and emigrated at nineteen, I’ve often reflected on the cultural differences that shape our relationship with pleasure, presence, and sensuality.

This isn’t about one culture being better than the other. America has given me a wonderful life, remarkable opportunities, and an entrepreneurial spirit I admire. But France gave me something else, something I didn’t even realize was cultural until I left.

Being born and raised in France has given me an understanding that being an erotic human being has very little to do with having sex.

When I first came here one thing struck me almost immediately: everything seemed designed for efficiency: fast food, drive-through banking, two-day shipping, everything bigger, faster, easier, more convenient. There is tremendous value in convenience. But convenience is not the same thing as aliveness.

Real life contains uncertainty, waiting, mystery, inconvenience, seasons that cannot be hurried, conversations that wander, meals that take time, relationships that unfold instead of being optimized.

The French tend to expect life to ask something of them. Americans often expect life to remove every obstacle. Neither approach is entirely right or wrong, but they produce very different nervous systems.

I also remember being fascinated by American television. Every few minutes came another commercial break. Just as you became immersed in a story, the connection was interrupted. Looking back, I sometimes wonder whether Americans have become culturally conditioned to expect, and even tolerate, constant interruption. It makes me crazy. We rarely stay with one experience long enough for it to deepen.

Presence becomes fragmented. Attention becomes scarce. And eroticism, which depends on sustained attention, quietly disappears.

To me, being an erotic woman has never meant wearing tighter clothing, revealing more skin, or what I jokingly call “hoochifying” yourself. Eroticism isn’t packaging. It isn’t performance. It isn’t something you throw around hoping someone else will notice.

It’s a way of inhabiting your own body. It’s how you experience your skin from the inside.

It’s the quiet confidence of feeling at home in yourself. It’s caring for your body because it is your home, not because you’re trying to make it acceptable to someone else’s gaze.

It’s enjoying the texture of a beautiful scarf, the warmth of sunlight on your shoulders, the smell of basil as you chop it for dinner, the first sip of coffee before anyone else wakes up.

It is entirely possible to be profoundly erotic while standing in the grocery store buying apples with your child. No one looking at you would necessarily know. That’s precisely the point. Eroticism is not a performance for an audience. It is an internal relationship with vitality.

The French, I think, understand this almost instinctively. There is an appreciation for caring for oneself, not through extremes or perfection, but through moderation. Pleasure isn’t something earned after suffering. It is woven into ordinary life: a walk, a meal, a conversation, fresh flowers on the kitchen table, good bread, well-made shoes that last twenty years. There is an implicit belief that beauty nourishes us. Not because it makes us attractive. Because it makes us alive.

As a sex therapist, people often assume that when I talk about becoming more erotic, I’m talking about becoming more sexual. I’m not. You can have plenty of sex and be profoundly disconnected from your own erotic self.

And you can be widowed, celibate, single, eighty-three years old, or simply not interested in sex right now, and still be deeply erotic. Because eroticism is your relationship with life itself.

It is curiosity, wonder, play, presence. It is allowing yourself to linger instead of rushing, to notice instead of consuming, to savor instead of optimizing.

Perhaps the opposite of eroticism isn’t celibacy.

Perhaps it’s living on autopilot.

And if that’s true, then cultivating an erotic life begins long before the bedroom.

It begins in the way you walk through an ordinary Tuesday.

How do you experience your eroticism?

My homeowners’ association has recently been grappling with a community crisis: children. Playing. In the swimming pool. During summer. Heavens!

There has also been a secondary emergency involving the occasional strains of jazz music drifting gently across the water on a sunny afternoon.

Now, before anyone accuses me of advocating for chaos, let me be clear: I’m all for being a considerate neighbour. If someone is blasting death metal at midnight or hosting an outdoor karaoke marathon every Tuesday, we need to have a conversation. But children laughing in a pool on a July afternoon? Jazz? Really? Here’s a radical thought: if you buy a home (should you be fortunate enough to do so) next to a swimming pool, there’s a reasonable chance you’ll hear... swimming noises.

If you buy next to an airport, you’ll probably notice the occasional airplane. If you move next to a freeway or an amusement park, you have to anticipate, and accept, that there may be noise emanating from such places.

And if you buy a home overlooking a cemetery, complaining that it’s “a bit too peaceful around here” seems like an odd hill to die on. You have to adjust and make it work for you.

Life comes with terms and conditions. Most of us simply don’t read them. Instead, we spend extraordinary amounts of energy trying to negotiate with reality. Reality, I’ve noticed, is a terrible negotiator. Part of living life on it’s own terms is accepting that there are inalienable consequences to certain things.

I see the same thing in relationships every day. People arrive in my office exhausted and heartbroken after years, sometimes decades, of trying to ‘improve’ another human being.

“If only he’d communicate differently.” “If only she’d stop overthinking.” “If only he wanted sex more.” “If only she wanted sex less.” “If only they liked my family.” “If only they loaded the dishwasher correctly.”

We become convinced that peace is waiting just on the other side of someone else’s personality transplant. It rarely works. One of the most profound, and irritating, truths about adulthood is this: you don’t get to control reality.

Not your partner.

Not your children.

Not your neighbour’s taste in music.

Not the weather.

Not the person ahead of you in the grocery store who suddenly remembers they have seventeen coupons that expired in 2021.

You get exactly one human being to manage: you. That’s it!

You can only control how you comport yourself in the face of whatever is upsetting you.

You can ask. You can negotiate. You can compromise. You can set boundaries. You can decide what you’re willing, or unwilling, to live with. That you do get to control.

And sometimes, you can walk away.

But you cannot spend your life trying to remodel the world into a place where nothing ever irritates you. Because here’s the uncomfortable truth: if children laughing, jazz floating on the breeze, or someone loading the dishwasher “incorrectly” can completely dismantle your peace of mind, the problem probably isn’t the children, the jazz, or the dishwasher.

It’s that you’ve handed the keys to your emotional well-being over to circumstances you don’t control.

Take responsibility for your own experience. Respond instead of react. Adjust instead of demand. Become curious instead of combative. The world is gloriously inconvenient.

People will splash.

Planes will fly.

Partners will be imperfect.

Jazz will occasionally drift across the pool on a summer afternoon.

Thank goodness!

Because a life with no surprises, no laughter, no children playing, no music, and no inconvenience at all would be perfectly controlled...

...and unbearably dull.

It’s the same with relationships.

Erotic Integrity® isn’t just about what happens in the bedroom. It’s about having the courage to stop managing everyone else’s experience and start becoming responsible for your own. That’s where intimacy begins.

“I’m just not sure we’re compatible.” It’s one of the most common reasons people give for ending a relationship. Sometimes they’re right.

If one partner is deeply committed to monogamy and the other knows they need ethical non-monogamy to feel fully alive, that’s a real incompatibility. If one person is exclusively attracted to men and the other is a woman, no amount of communication will bridge that gap. There are genuine differences that matter. If one wants children and the other doesn’t, that’s a dealbreaker.

But most of the time, what people call incompatibility is something else entirely. They’ve confused difference with doom.

Some of the happiest couples I’ve worked with don’t like the same music, don’t vote the same way, don’t vacation the same way, don’t have identical sex drives, and certainly don’t fold towels the same way.

What makes them work isn’t similarity, it’s flexibility, curiosity. It’s the willingness to say: “Help me understand your world,” instead of: “Convince me you’re wrong”, because I need to be right.

We have a romantic fantasy that somewhere out there is a person who naturally wants what we want, exactly when we want it, in precisely the way we imagined. How convenient.

That is what I call magical thinking.

The truth is, every long-term relationship eventually introduces you to someone who isn’t quite the person you thought you married. Not because they deceived you, but because people evolve.

Bodies change, desires change, priorities shift, children arrive, parents age. Hormones retire without giving notice. The question isn’t whether your partner will change. The question is whether your relationship can.

I’ve watched couples transform what looked like impossible differences into deeply satisfying relationships, not because they eliminated those differences, but because they stopped treating them as evidence that someone was wrong.

One partner loved frequent sex. The other preferred slower, less frequent intimacy. Instead of arguing about who was “normal,” they became curious about what intimacy meant to each of them. Hallelujah!

One partner needed more independence. The other longed for more closeness. Instead of diagnosing each other, they learned to translate. That’s not compatibility. That’s relationship!

This is where Erotic Integrity® comes in. Erotic Integrity isn’t about becoming someone your partner will like better. It’s about knowing who you are, what is true for you, and bringing that truth into the relationship with honesty and kindness.

When people ask me whether they’re compatible, I usually ask a different question:

Can the two of you stay curious when you’re different? Because compatibility doesn’t thrive on agreement. It thrives on the ability to remain connected while disagreeing.

The strongest relationships aren’t built by people who never encounter differences.

They’re built by people who refuse to let those differences become the end of the conversation.

Compatibility isn’t something you stumble upon.

It’s something you create.

One honest conversation at a time.

The goal isn’t to find someone exactly like you. It’s to find someone who’s willing to keep discovering you, and whom you’re willing to keep discovering in return.

Before you decide you’re incompatible, ask yourself one question: Have we exhausted our curiosity, or just our assumptions?

Couples often tell me, “We stopped having sex”, as though that were the beginning of the story. It rarely is. Sex is one of the first things to disappear in a struggling relationship, but it’s almost never the first thing to go wrong.

Long before bodies stopped touching, something else quietly slipped away: curiosity, playfulness, feeling chosen, feeling safe, feeling seen.

By the time a couple notices they’re no longer having sex, they’ve often been emotionally drifting for months or even years.

I don’t believe sex is the canary in the coal mine. I think it’s the smoke alarm. By the time it’s blaring, the fire has already started somewhere else. That’s why I smile a little when people tell me they have a “low libido problem.” Maybe. But before we diagnose the libido, I’d like to know what happened to the friendship.

What happened to the conversations that lasted until midnight?

What happened to reaching for each other’s hand in the grocery store?

What happened to laughing together?

What happened to telling your partner something vulnerable before telling people on your phone?

It’s very difficult to feel erotic toward someone you no longer feel emotionally connected to.

Not impossible, just difficult.

I’ve spent more than three decades sitting with couples who thought they came to see me because of sex. Very few of them actually did. They came because they felt lonely. Lonely while sharing a bed. Lonely while raising children together. Lonely while running businesses, paying mortgages, taking vacations, and posting happy pictures of themselves online.

The sex wasn’t the problem. The loneliness was.

Here’s the irony. Many couples stop talking because they’re no longer having sex. In reality, they’re no longer having sex because they stopped talking. Not talking about schedules or groceries, talking about themselves. Their fears, their disappointments, their longings, their resentments, their dreams. The conversations that make us feel known. The intimate/into-me-you-see conversations. The dialogs that require courage.

When those disappear, sex often follows.

I call this Erotic Integrity®. Being willing to show your whole self, not the polished version, not the agreeable version, not the version that says, “I’m fine.” The real one. Because desire doesn’t flourish where authenticity is absent.

It flourishes where two people continue discovering each other. Even after twenty or more years. Especially after twenty years.

So if your relationship has become sexless, don’t make the mistake of assuming the answer begins in the bedroom. It probably begins on the couch, or over coffee, or during a walk. It begins with one person saying something true that they’ve been afraid to say. And the other person staying. Not fixing. Not defending. Just staying.

People very often ask me how to bring the sex back. Sometimes the answer surprises them. I talk to them about not focusing on the ‘doing’ of sex but rather the ‘being’ of sex.

If you’ve worked with me you’ve no doubt heard my soapbox talk about desire versus arousal. If you live under a rock and haven’t heard it, here it is, because it bears repeating.

People tend to confuse desire and arousal, and do themselves a disservice.

I keep repeating it because this one distinction has probably relieved more anxiety than anything else I talk to people about.

People confuse desire and arousal all the time and then conclude something is wrong with them. It’s misguided.

Desire is the willingness to get started, the willingness to move toward your partner, to engage. It’s saying, “I’m willing to see where this goes.” Notice I didn’t say you’re already turned on. You don’t have to be.

Desire can come from three very different places.

First, your crotch. That horny, wanna fuck kinda feeling. Nothing wrong with that.

Second, your heart. You love this person. You want to feel close, you want to kiss them, smell them, laugh with them, melt into them. The motivation isn’t raw lust. It’s connection.

Third, your head, because it’d be a good idea to get it on. Perhaps it’s been a while. Perhaps you’ve both been working too much. Perhaps you remember that every single time you make love you’re glad you did, even if neither of you was exactly swinging from the chandeliers beforehand. Believe it or not, that’s desire too.

People often think starting from their head somehow “doesn’t count.” Nonsense. You don’t refuse to go to the gym because you’re not already sweaty. You don’t refuse dinner because you’re not already full. Sometimes willingness comes first. The appetite follows.

Now let’s talk about arousal.

Arousal is what your body does after you’re underway. It’s the increased blood flow, lubrication, heavy breathing, contortions, flushed skin. The delicious physiological evidence that your nervous system has joined the party.

Here’s where people get themselves into trouble. They wait for arousal before giving themselves permission to have desire. “I don’t feel turned on, so I guess I don’t want sex.”

Not necessarily. Especially if you’re menopausal. Especially if you’re under stress. Especially if you’ve been parenting young children. Especially if life has simply been...life.

For many people—particularly women after menopause, though certainly not exclusively, arousal is more responsive than spontaneous. It shows up after the invitation has been accepted, not before.

Understanding this can feel incredibly liberating.

It means you’re not broken because fireworks didn’t begin at breakfast.

It means you don’t need to fix yourself before you can enjoy intimacy. It means your body may simply have a different sequence. And sequences matter.

So the next time you think, “I don’t have any desire,” ask yourself a different question.

Am I willing?

Because willingness is often enough to open the door. And once you’re through that door, your body may surprise you.

Nobody is broken.

Nobody needs fixing.

“Maybe we’re just sexually incompatible.” It’s one of the most common conclusions I hear when couples struggle with their sex life. And most of the time, I don’t buy it.

People often imagine sexual compatibility as if it were astrology: two people either magically fit together or they don’t. If the chemistry fades, if desire becomes mismatched, or if someone wants something the other doesn’t, they assume they simply chose the wrong partner. That’s a comforting story and it gets you off the hook. It’s also usually the wrong one.

In my experience, sexual compatibility has far more to do with two people’s willingness to understand each other than with finding someone who checks every erotic box on a mythical compatibility list. And lord knows the internet is replete with all sorts of compatibility tests, all claiming to be the latest and most accurate.

Now, there are genuine deal-breakers. If one partner is deeply committed to monogamy while the other cannot imagine a fulfilling life without multiple partners, that’s a fundamental incompatibility. If one person requires a dominant/submissive dynamic to feel sexually alive and the other has no interest in that world, that may be incompatible. If you’re attracted to women and you’re trying to build a sexual relationship with a man, no amount of communication will solve that. Some differences cannot be negotiated.

But many more can. Let’s say one partner enjoys cross-dressing and the other simply isn’t turned on by it. Does that automatically mean the relationship is doomed? Not necessarily. With curiosity, compassion, and creativity, couples often discover solutions neither would have imagined at the beginning. Perhaps one partner enjoys expressing that side of themselves independently while still maintaining a deeply satisfying intimate relationship together. Perhaps the other partner doesn’t need to share the interest to respect it.

Compatibility isn’t always about wanting the same things. Sometimes it’s about making room for each other’s authenticity. Sex, at its best, isn’t about technique. It’s about attention, presence, the willingness to feel and be felt. You don’t need to take the other person over. You don’t need to lose yourself. In fact, the most powerful connection happens when two people stay fully in themselves, and meet there.

What I often discover underneath complaints about “sexual incompatibility” is something far less mysterious: people haven’t actually told each other the truth of what they want, yearn for, fantasize about, and how they feel. One person has been quietly tolerating unsatisfying sex for years. The other has been avoiding difficult conversations for fear of rejection. Both have been guessing what the other wants rather than asking. That’s not incompatibility. That’s loneliness.

Good sex doesn’t come from two perfectly matched bodies. It comes from two people willing to be known.

The couples with the most fulfilling sex lives aren’t necessarily the ones who started out wanting exactly the same things. They’re the ones who remain curious about each other. They negotiate, they experiment, they disappoint each other sometimes. They repair, they laugh, they keep talking. They understand that desire evolves, and so must the relationship.

This is where Erotic Integrity® becomes essential. Erotic Integrity isn’t about getting everything you want. It’s about knowing what is true for you sexually and having the courage to bring that truth into the relationship with kindness rather than demand, and honesty rather than performance.

Ironically, the more authentically each partner shows up, the easier it becomes to discover whether they’re truly compatible. Not because they’ve become more alike, but because they’re no longer hiding.

Sexual compatibility isn’t something you find. More often than not it’s something you create. One honest conversation at a time.

How many kissing techniques are there? Probably about as many as there are people.

Everyone has their own style. Some people arrive with confidence. Some with hesitation. Some kiss like they’re asking a question. Others kiss like they’ve already decided on the answer.

And just like sex, which often follows kissing, the quality of the experience has surprisingly little to do with technique.

“What’s the best way to kiss?” Wrong question. The better question is: Who are you when you kiss?

Because kissing isn’t a performance. It’s a conversation.

That said, there are a few recognizable classics:

• The blown kiss, equal parts affection and theater. Ideally delivered with enthusiasm and perhaps a dramatic flourish of the hand.

• The unforgettable first kiss. Whether you’ve imagined it for weeks or it sneaks up on you, you only get one first kiss with someone. Once it’s happened, it’s gone forever.

• The polite peck on the cheek. Sometimes genuine affection. Sometimes social obligation. Sometimes it lands just a little too close to the corner of the mouth... and suddenly everyone is wondering whether that was an accident.

• The I’ve wanted to do this all day kiss. The one that ends with someone laughing because they’re suddenly pinned against the wall.

• The lingering kiss, slow, curious. The kind that makes time temporarily irrelevant.

• The playful nibble. Just enough to say, “I’d like your attention,” without requiring first aid.

• The glorious chaos we call French kissing. Tongues have an impressive vocabulary when two people are actually listening to each other.

• I grew up in France, where greeting someone usually involves two to four alternating cheek kisses. Entirely unsexy. Mostly. Though every now and then tourists become wonderfully confused.

• And then there are the rapid-fire kisses I shower on my son when we cuddle in the morning, the kind only a parent can get away with before a child reaches the age where they wipe them off dramatically.

Those cover most of the categories. Human creativity takes care of the rest.

What makes the perfect kiss?

Presence.

Breath.

Chemistry.

And perhaps most importantly... someone you actually want to kiss.

A polyamorous friend once told me that one of his partners thought he was an extraordinary kisser, while another insisted he wasn’t a very good one. He hadn’t changed his technique. The chemistry had.

We love the fantasy that there is a secret sequence of lip movements that guarantees passion. There isn’t. A kiss isn’t something one person gives. It’s something two nervous systems create together.

The best kisses don’t happen because someone mastered a technique. They happen because, for a few delicious moments, two people stop trying to impress each other... and actually meet.

What’s the most unforgettable kiss you’ve ever had—and what made it unforgettable?

Let’s talk about “sexual boredom.” I don’t actually think sexual boredom exists. At least not in the way most people think it does.

When couples tell me they’re bored with their sex life, my antennae immediately go up. Because what they’re usually describing isn’t boredom at all. It’s what happens when uncomfortable feelings have been quietly accumulating beneath the surface and nobody wants to feel them. The brain is clever that way. Rather than letting us feel vulnerable, rejected, resentful, insecure, lonely, disappointed, inadequate, or disconnected, it slaps a more socially acceptable label on the experience: “I’m bored.”

Boredom isn’t particularly pleasant, but it’s often easier than facing what’s really there.

In my experience, “sexual boredom” is one of the most common explanations people give when they’ve lost interest in sex with a long-term partner. But underneath that label, I often find unresolved conflict, unspoken resentments, fear of rejection, power struggles, emotional distance, low desire, hormonal changes, stress, depression, feeling unappreciated, lack of confidence, or simply years of taking each other for granted.

In other words, stagnant energy. Sexual energy is life energy. And when life energy stops moving, everything starts to feel flat. Including sex.

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is believing that better sex requires focusing more on technique, novelty, positions, toys, or performance. Those things can be fun. But they don’t create eroticism. Eroticism comes from presence. And presence requires vulnerability.

Ironically, many people disconnect emotionally during sex because intimacy makes them anxious. They retreat into physical sensation and try to stay there, believing it will make sex more enjoyable.

It usually does the opposite. Then you stop making emotional contact, sex may continue, but aliveness begins to disappear. The solution isn’t necessarily a new position. It may be a new conversation. It may be looking your partner in the eyes instead of avoiding their gaze. It may be admitting that you’re hurt, scared, angry, longing, or lonely. It may be revealing something you’ve never dared to say out loud.

“Boredom” is often an invitation into emotional growth. It’s the canary in the coal mine of intimacy.

It’s your relationship tapping you on the shoulder and saying, “Pay attention. Something important needs you.” The good news? If boredom isn’t the problem, then you don’t need to spend years chasing excitement. You need to create movement, in your relationship, towards each other.

Couples often settle for uninspired sex because, on some level, it’s safer than truly being seen. Real eroticism asks more of us. It asks us to risk ourselves, to tell the truth, to stay present, to reveal who we are.

What makes sex extraordinary isn’t what you’re doing. It’s how fully you’re showing up while you’re doing it. Eroticism lives in the being, not the doing. And that’s where Erotic Integrity begins.

When couples think about trust, they often think about the big things: infidelity, financial betrayal, broken promises. But in my work, I see trust built, and eroded, in much smaller moments.

People often assume relationships end because two people are fundamentally incompatible. Sometimes that’s true. But in my work, I see another culprit far more often: anxiety.

Not the garden variety anxiety of daily life. I mean the anxiety that arises when someone matters. The anxiety of vulnerability. The anxiety of being seen. The anxiety of needing someone. The anxiety of not knowing how the story ends.

Many people think they’re waiting for certainty before moving forward in a relationship. What they’re actually waiting for is for anxiety to disappear. I call that waiting for divine intervention. It doesn’t happen.

A man tells himself he’s not sure the relationship is right because he’s worried he won’t be a good enough partner. A woman convinces herself she needs more information before she can fully commit. Someone else pulls away because the feelings are getting too strong. Another person becomes preoccupied with practical concerns that may be real but have suddenly become much larger than life. The stated concern is rarely the whole story. Beneath it often lives a more vulnerable fear: “What if I disappoint them?” “What if I fail?” “What if they need something I can’t provide?” “What if they really know me and decide I’m not enough?”

Sometimes people don’t leave because the relationship is wrong. They leave because they’re scared. Or they remain physically present while quietly retreating emotionally.

This is where intimacy tolerance comes in.

Most people think they have a high tolerance for intimacy because they crave connection. But craving intimacy and tolerating intimacy are not the same thing. No way. Intimacy requires uncertainty. It requires staying present when you don’t know exactly what will happen next. Because you never do anyway. It requires remaining open when there are no guarantees. It requires continuing to move toward someone even while your nervous system is busy imagining every possible catastrophe.

The irony is that the very people who long most deeply for connection are sometimes the most likely to flee from it, not because they don’t care. Because they care so much.

I often see this with people who worry about not measuring up. They become preoccupied with whether they’ll be good enough as a partner, a lover, a parent, a stepparent, a provider, a companion. Their sense of responsibility is admirable. Their anxiety is understandable.

But eventually there comes a moment when no amount of thinking can answer the question. The only thing left is participation. Love is a lived experience.

You do not discover whether you can build a meaningful relationship by standing safely on the shore analyzing the water. You discover it by getting in, slowly, imperfectly, courageously.

For my 50th birthday I learned skydiving. I didn’t just go once, strapped onto a professional guy. I learned AFF (Accelerated Free Fall). I learned to jump all by myself out of a perfectly good plane, to overcome that fear that tells you: “This is not a good survival strategy”. Each day I went to the drop zone was briefly terrifying and ultimately exhilarating.

This kind of thing isn’t for everyone, but the experience of choosing to overcome fear and move forward was priceless. Relationships offer us that opportunity, if we’re paying attention.

The healthiest relationships are not built by people who never feel fear. They are built by people who learn not to let fear make all of their decisions.

Love does not require certainty. It requires courage. And courage is not the absence of anxiety. It is the willingness to move forward while anxiety is present. Despite it.

Because the relationship may not be stuck. Your nervous system might be.

And that’s a very different problem.

The good news is that nervous systems can learn. This is your growing edge. Sometimes the path forward is not finding the right answer. It’s becoming capable of tolerating the uncertainty that love requires.

And when people learn to stay present through that discomfort, they often discover that the relationship was never the obstacle. Fear was.

A client of mine recently complained that his partner was “sexual, but not sexy”, which got me thinking about the distinction. I knew exactly what he meant.

The two overlap, but they are not the same thing. And the distinction matters enormously in relationships. Many couples lose ‘sexy’ long before they stop being sexual. They still have intercourse, bodies still meet, orgasms may still happen, but the flirtation, curiosity, playfulness, tension, admiration and emotional charge have disappeared. The feeling that something alive is happening between two people rather than merely to them has evaporated.

Being sexual can come primarily from the body, the crotch, the throbbing loins aspect of desire, the raw instinct of “I want to fuck.” There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Sometimes sex is gloriously primal. Sometimes it’s sweaty and urgent and deliciously unsophisticated. Sometimes the lust comes after the eye gazing and whispered sweet nothings have already dissolved into hunger. But that’s not what my client was describing. What he was describing was the absence of erotic energy.

Because sexy is not merely sexual availability. Sexy lives somewhere else entirely.

Sexy lives in anticipation, confidence, emotional risk, vitality and connection to self. Self-possession. Sexy is deeply connected to how someone inhabits themselves.

And contrary to popular belief, sexy is often less about physical appearance than about energetic presence. I’ve known conventionally beautiful people who felt utterly erotically flat. And I’ve known people who would never grace the cover of a magazine who could charge a room simply by crossing it.

Being sexy can encompass many things: one’s vibe, aura, way of being, walking, moving in the world. The way one carries oneself, unapologetically but not provocatively.

It might be humor, curiosity, physicality and aliveness, the affinity for remaining connected to desire without performing it.

Sexy can be profoundly relational. It’s attunement. It’s noticing.

Sexy might be the way you run your nails along your lover’s ribs and feel them quiver, nibbling their lip when you kiss them because you’re so turned on, rolling your hips and hearing them groan, knowing the difference between when they need it slow and gentle vs hard and untamed ~ and giving it to them because you know how to read them, how they pin you down while cupping your face gently and somehow making you feel both undone and profoundly safe, your fingers gripping their... Ok, I’m getting carried away. Or am I?

Perhaps this is precisely the point.

Sexy is not mechanical, it cannot be reduced to technique, frequency, or sexual openness. It is an atmosphere, an energy exchange, a conversation between nervous systems.

And sexy extends far beyond the bedroom. Sexy is how someone treats the waiter, how they speak to a child, how they occupy space without making everyone else smaller.

How they elevate the people in their life. Sexy is emotional presence.

Which is why many couples slowly lose it. Not because they stop having sex, but because they stop seeing each other. They stop playing, stop risking, stop revealing themselves, stop bringing fresh energy into the relationship. They become efficient domestic partners while quietly ceasing to be lovers. The relationship becomes functional, efficient, polite.

And then they wonder where the erotic charge went.

But sexy was never about lingerie, novelty, or sexual frequency. Sexy lives in aliveness, in presence, in emotional risk, in the willingness to stay connected to yourself and truly encounter another person.

Sexy is not just what you do in bed.

It’s how vividly you inhabit yourself.

What does sexy vs sexual mean to you? I’m curious.

Difficult conversations are rarely difficult because we don’t know what to say.

They’re difficult because we know, on some level, that once certain truths are spoken aloud, the relationship can no longer remain exactly as it was.

And most humans, despite claiming to want intimacy, are surprisingly devoted to maintaining emotional equilibrium. We avoid difficult conversations the way people avoid cold ocean water: circling the edge, dipping in one toe, convincing ourselves maybe it won’t be necessary after all. We tell ourselves the timing isn’t right, the kids are too young, work is too stressful, the relationship is basically fine. Maybe the issue will resolve itself if we’re patient enough, loving enough, accommodating enough.

I call this waiting for divine intervention. It rarely arrives.

Meanwhile, the unspoken conversation grows louder.

I see this constantly in my work: couples who haven’t fought in years but haven’t truly touched emotionally in years either. Partners who pride themselves on “getting along,” while quietly starving for honesty, eroticism, or emotional contact, people who have become so conflict avoidant that politeness slowly replaces intimacy.

And then they wonder where the desire went.

But desire is rarely nourished by emotional withholding. Eroticism requires aliveness, and aliveness requires truth.

Sometimes the difficult conversation is:

“I miss you.”

“I don’t feel chosen.”

“I’m lonely next to you.”

“I’m afraid to tell you what I want sexually.”

“I don’t know who I became in this relationship.”

“I want more.”

“I want less.”

“I want different.”

These are vulnerable sentences. And vulnerability is profoundly disorganizing to the nervous system. We imagine catastrophe: rejection, conflict, abandonment, humiliation. So instead we manage, adapt, accommodate, suppress. Humans are extraordinarily skilled at surviving relationally while slowly disappearing emotionally.

The irony is that the conversations we avoid in order to preserve the relationship are often the very conversations capable of saving it. Not because every difficult conversation ends beautifully. Sometimes they do not. Sometimes truth rearranges things. But silence rearranges things too, only more slowly, more quietly, more deadeningly.

I often say that intimacy is not synonymous with sex. Intimacy means: into-me-you-see, the willingness to let another person encounter us honestly, not performatively, not strategically, not just the polished, agreeable version.

And this is where many couples get stuck. They want closeness, but they do not want the discomfort required for real closeness. They want harmony without confrontation, connection without exposure, desire without uncertainty.

But relationships do not deepen through mind-reading and emotional choreography. They deepen through the terrifying and liberating act of saying the thing.

Not aggressively. Not cruelly. Not as indictment. But truthfully.

A difficult conversation does not need to become emotional bloodsport. It can be an inquiry, a revealing, a moment of saying: “Something important is happening inside me, and I want you to know.”

And yes, it helps to speak skillfully, to use “I” statements, to remain curious about the other person’s experience, to avoid making them wrong. But technique alone is not what transforms relationships.

Courage does.

Most couples do not need more communication hacks. They need greater tolerance for the discomfort of honesty. Because what destroys relationships is often not conflict.

It’s chronic emotional evasion.

What conversation are you avoiding because you’re afraid it might change the relationship?

And what is the silence already changing?

A couple comes in arguing about screen time. One parent thinks the child should have stricter limits. The other thinks the first parent is too rigid. They bicker about iPads, boundaries, consistency, consequences. On the surface, it sounds like a parenting issue.

It often isn’t. Or at least not entirely.

Because underneath the argument about screens may live a completely different conversation:

“I feel alone.”

“I’m exhausted.”

“I carry the mental load.”

“I miss us.”

“I resent you.”

“I don’t feel desired.”

“I feel criticized no matter what I do.”

“You only notice me when something is wrong.”

This is one of the things I see over and over in my work with couples: parenting struggles are frequently reflections of relationship dynamics already under strain. The child becomes the visible symptom. The relationship is often the invisible ecosystem surrounding it.

And to be clear, I’m not blaming parents. Parenting is genuinely hard. I know. I’m a parent. Kids can be anxious, explosive, sensitive, neurodivergent, strong-willed, overstimulated, under-slept, or emotionally struggling. Sometimes parents are simply overwhelmed and feeling helpless about what their child needs. But often the parenting issue becomes electrically charged because it’s plugged into unresolved tension between the adults.

Take the screen time fight. Maybe one parent has become the default emotional manager of the household, constantly tracking schedules, moods, snacks, school forms, and dentist appointments while also trying to remain sexually available at the end of the day to a partner they quietly resent. Maybe “You let him stay on the iPad too long” actually means: “I feel unsupported and invisible.”

Meanwhile the other parent may feel perpetually criticized, shut out, or like they can never quite get parenting right. Perhaps they retreat into work, avoidance, scrolling, emotional distance, or eventually an affair, not because they are evil, but because the relationship has become a place of tension rather than a soft place to land. Again, the argument appears to be about the child. But the emotional temperature in the room tells another story.

Children are exquisitely sensitive to relationship dynamics. They absorb tension long before adults acknowledge it openly. And many parenting conflicts are less about differing philosophies than about two dysregulated adults trying to manage stress while quietly starving for emotional connection themselves.

When parenting issues present as a roadblock to sex and relationship issues, one very practical shift I often suggest is that before continuing the parenting argument, a couple ask themselves, and each other: “What is happening between us right now?”

Not “What’s wrong with our child?”, but “What emotional dynamic are we acting out through this parenting issue?” That question changes everything.

Because sometimes the solution to a parenting problem is not another sticker chart, parenting strategy, or consequences system. Sometimes the deeper intervention is repairing the emotional alliance between the adults. Children feel safer when parents feel connected.

And interestingly, couples often rediscover eroticism through this process too. Not because talking about bedtime routines is sexy (good grief, no), but because teamwork, appreciation, authenticity, and feeling emotionally chosen are profoundly erotic precursors.

The irony is that many couples stop seeing each other entirely while focusing intensely on the child. And then one day they look up from soccer practice, orthodontist appointments, and arguments about Roblox and realize that they became co-managers of a household instead of lovers.

The parenting issue may be real.

But sometimes it’s also carrying the emotional weight of an entire relationship.

What argument do you keep having about your child that may not actually be about your child?

The other night, sitting in front of the fire with my 9 ½ year old son, as we often do, he asked me: “Maman… how many sperm are there?”

I took a breath, not because I was uncomfortable, but because I wanted to answer thoughtfully and honestly, and to figure out where to start, in a way that matched his age and curiosity.

I explained that sperm is made in the testicles, which he already knew, and that when he gets older, white fluid will come out of his penis during wet dreams and orgasms. I told him that if he ever wakes up and the bed feels wet or sticky, nothing bad has happened and there’s nothing to be afraid of. That he can always ask me questions if he feels confused or concerned. It also will come out when he masturbates, and later when he has sex with a partner and has an orgasm.

It was calm, simple.

Then, after a little pause, he asked: “Maman… how many orgasms are there?”

I smiled: “As many as you want, mon chéri.”

And then we moved on to another topic entirely. His pet snake, why flowers are different colours, why the colours of the rainbow appear in the order they do (a question I cannot answer.)

I’ve always thought it’s important to educate kids about sex before they’re interested in doing it. I myself asked questions at a very young age and had most of the information by the time I was five. Granted, I’m French and have a more liberal view of such things. I’m just matter of fact about it.

Curiosity flows naturally. Children don’t usually bring shame to conversations about bodies and sexuality. Adults do. And children are exquisitely sensitive to our emotional tone. The real lesson is often not the information itself, but the atmosphere surrounding it.

Did the adult tense up? Did the room suddenly feel awkward? Did curiosity get punished, avoided, or loaded with anxiety?

Or did the child learn that they can ask anything, that nothing about them is too embarrassing to bring up?

As a relationship therapist and sexologist, I’ve spent decades watching adults struggle to speak about their bodies, desires, fears, and questions. Many were never given language for these things. Many learned early that sexuality was something dangerous, shameful, or unspeakable.

I’m French, and perhaps culturally we tend to be a little more matter of fact about bodies and sexuality. But beyond culture, what matters to me is emotional intelligence: creating an environment where a child’s curiosity does not become fused with shame.

Because children remember less of the exact facts than they do the feeling. They remember whether their questions were met with warmth or discomfort, whether their curiosity felt welcome or threatening, whether their growing bodies felt like a source of embarrassment or simply part of being human.

To me, that is the deeper conversation: not just about sex but about trust and emotional safety, about teaching my child that there is nothing so human he cannot bring to me. So far so good.

What’s a question about bodies or sex you wish had been answered honestly when you were young?

It’s one of the most confusing moments in intimacy. I’ve touched on this before but it bears repeating as I still encounter it frequently in my clients. You’re there, together, connected enough to begin. And then, something subtle happens.

You pull back.

You go quiet.

You disappear just a little.

Not dramatically. Not consciously, even. But enough that something shifts. And what could have deepened… stalls.

I hear about this all the time in my office. From both men and women. It’s incredibly common, and rarely understood. Because it doesn’t mean you don’t love your partner.

It doesn’t mean you don’t want connection. So what is it?

For many women, the challenge isn’t lack of desire. It’s lack of bandwidth.

By the time intimacy becomes possible, the day has already happened: work , home, kids, logistics, the endless mental tabs still open. She finally gets to the moment where she could turn toward her partner, and something in her hesitates.

Not because she doesn’t care. But because she knows: To really be here, I’d have to drop everything else. And that’s not nothing. Presence requires a kind of internal clearing. A willingness to leave the lists, the roles, the thinking mind, and enter her body.

And sometimes, she simply doesn’t have the energy for that shift. Or she thinks she doesn’t. So she shuts down instead, quietly, efficiently, without naming it.

And the payoff? She gets to stay in control. She avoids the effort of transition. She protects herself from showing up halfway and feeling inadequate.

It’s not that she doesn’t want intimacy.

It’s that real intimacy asks more of her than she feels she has to give in that moment.

Men have their own version of this edge.

Alone, everything works. There’s no pressure. No one else to read, respond to, or stay connected with.

But with a real live human being on the other end of their cock, something changes.

Even if he’s not consciously anxious, there can be a subtle shift into monitoring, anticipating, wondering if he’ll “stay with it”. And the body responds accordingly. In other words, not well. Because the truth is the body doesn’t respond to half-presence. It responds to safety, focus, and engagement.

So what looks like a physical issue is often something else entirely: a nervous system that’s not fully settled, attention that’s split, a moment of being just slightly outside the experience instead of inside it.

And here’s the part no one talks about: that moment, right when things could get good, is often the most vulnerable point. Because it requires you to stay present and engaged, to soften, and to allow yourself to be affected emotionally.

And that’s when people retreat.

Not because they don’t want the connection. But because they’re not sure they can fully arrive for it. So they hover instead, acting as if they’re fully there, or they check out, exit. And then they or their partner calls it lack of desire or a performance issue. But more often than not, it’s neither.

It’s the edge of intimacy.

And learning to stay there, even imperfectly, is what changes everything.

I was listening to Rick Steves, travel guide celebrity, talk about travel, and he used a phrase I love: imposed discomfort (or something like that).

The idea is that when you travel well, not resort-wrapped, not curated to the point of anesthesia, you will feel awkward, disoriented, maybe a little incompetent. You won’t know where to stand, how to order, which train is yours, or whether that was a greeting or a mild insult. And the good traveler feels the discomfort and anxiety and learns to overcome it and keep going.

That’s not a travel philosophy. That’s a life skill.

We’ve been sold a quiet lie: that discomfort means something is wrong. That if you feel anxious, unsure, exposed, you’ve taken a wrong turn. But what if discomfort isn’t a warning sign? What if it’s a doorway, an invitation?

I’ve been saying for years: “growth comes from discomfort.” Not the performative kind, not the masochistic kind, but the chosen kind. The kind where you raise your hand to speak when your voice trembles. The kind where you say, “I’m attracted to you,” and your stomach drops like you’ve missed a step on the stairs. The kind where you interview for the job you’re not sure you deserve.

When has anyone ever died of discomfort?

We treat it like it’s fatal. It’s not. It’s information. It’s aliveness. It’s the body saying, “something here matters.”

In relationships, discomfort is practically the main character. You want intimacy? Welcome to the land of not knowing. You will misread. You will reach and not be met exactly as you hoped. You will want more, less, different. You will have to say things you wish you didn’t have to say. You will discover that being liked is not the same as being known, and being known is a much riskier business. But so worth it.

And sex? Please. Sex without discomfort is often sex without depth. Not because discomfort is the goal, but because vulnerability is unavoidable. Bodies change, desire ebbs and surges. We carry histories into the bed: our fears, our shame, our longings we can barely name. To stay present there requires a tolerance for awkwardness, for imperfect choreography, for cramps and farts, for the moment when you think: “Is this working? Am I working?”

Yes. You’re working. Stay.

The seasoned traveler doesn’t eliminate discomfort, they build a relationship with it. They learn its dialects. There’s the sharp edge of fear that says, “don’t do this,” and the quieter, electric hum that says, “this matters.” This is kind of exciting. Wisdom is learning the difference.

So try this: the next time you feel that familiar tightening, before a hard conversation, a first kiss, a risky ask, don’t rush to anesthetize it or pretend it’s not there. Don’t immediately interpret it as a stop sign. Instead, get curious.

What kind of discomfort is this?

Is it protecting me, or initiating me?

Because most of the meaningful moments of your life will not feel like ease at the beginning. They will feel like stepping into a country where you don’t yet speak the language.

And then, slowly, you will.

Not because the place changed, but because you did.

Discomfort isn’t the problem. Avoiding it is.

There are moments that don’t make sense and yet feel more real than anything else.

You meet someone and something in you just… knows.

Not necessarily romantic, not necessarily appropriate, not even something you’d act on.

But there’s a recognition, an energetic click. A quiet, unmistakable yes.

Some people call it love at first sight. Others dismiss it entirely, because they’re not used to paying attention to that layer of experience. But if you slow down enough, you start to notice that we are constantly reading each other, not just with our minds, but with our bodies, our energy bodies. And when the signal is clear, the connection is immediate.

The Healer

Anyone who works with people (therapists, body workers, energy practitioners) knows this terrain. You sit with someone, and if you’re attuned, you can feel them: their tension their grief, their agitation. You don’t need them to explain it. It’s in the room.

There’s a crucial distinction between empathy and compassion. Empathy is when you move into the other person’s energy. You feel what they feel, often as if it’s your own.

Compassion is different. You stay in yourself, grounded, steady, and from there, you meet them. You don’t carry their pain. You don’t absorb it. You remain present with them, not lost in them. And paradoxically, that’s what allows real healing.

That’s why a lot of therapists get burned out: they take it on.

The same is true with animals, if you’re paying attention. They don’t need your overwhelm. They respond to your clarity.

The Dance

In kizomba dancing, which I practice, this becomes unmistakably clear.

From the outside, it can look intimate, even sensual. But what makes it good has nothing to do with seduction. It’s about connection, two people moving together, not through force, but through attunement. Subtle shifts, micro-responses, listening through the body.

When it works, it feels effortless and joyful. When it doesn’t, no amount of technique can fix it.

It’s simple.

But not easy.

Because it requires presence. It requires you to be in your body, not in your head, not anticipating, not controlling.

Just… responding.

Sex

And yes, all this applies to sex. Completely.

You can have all the attraction in the world, but without that energetic connection, something feels off, mechanical, disconnected, performative. And this happens in some long term couples. They lose the connection and can’t find their way back to each other without help.

When that connection is there, everything changes. Not because of what you’re doing, but because of how you’re meeting.

Sex, at its best, isn’t about technique. It’s about attention, presence, the willingness to feel and be felt. You don’t need to take the other person over. You don’t need to lose yourself.

In fact, the most powerful connection happens when two people stay fully in themselves, and meet there.

We tend to think connection is something we build. And it is. But sometimes, it’s something we recognize. Instantly.

The question is whether we trust it. And whether we know how to stay present enough to let it unfold. That uncertainty can be uncomfortable, and exciting.
