Once the World Was Perfect

Once the world was perfect, and we were happy in that world.

 Then we took it for granted.

 Discontent began a small rumble in the earthly mind.

 Then Doubt pushed through with its spiked head.

 And once Doubt ruptured the web,

 All manner of demon thoughts

 Jumped through—

 We destroyed the world we had been given

 For inspiration, for life—

 Each stone of jealousy, each stone

 Of fear, greed, envy, and hatred, put out the light.

 No one was without a stone in his or her hand.

 There we were,

 Right back where we had started.

 We were bumping into each other

 In the dark.

 And now we had no place to live, since we didn’t know

 How to live with each other.

 Then one of the stumbling ones took pity on another

 And shared a blanket.

 A spark of kindness made a light.

 The light made an opening in the darkness.

 Everyone worked together to make a ladder.

 A Wind Clan person climbed out first into the next world,

 And then the other clans, the children of those clans, their children,

 And their children, all the way through time—

 To now, into this morning light to you.

Anyway, I want to start with a dream. And what I’ve learned, I learn a lot in dreams. I’ll just read this. But one thing I’ve learned too, is that, what he was showing you, in a way, the wonderful images and the sounds, was kind of like it’s a kind of dreaming. And you could say.

Sometimes I challenge myself to think that I’m walking through a dream right now. And maybe we are. And what would I do? What would I do in that if I understood that we are in the dream field, or the story field. I call it the story field.

When I was young in my poetry making, I was a mother to two young children with a full time job and tending to what my art demanded. I was beset by dreams that were appearing more and more dimensional and real. I was as awake in them as I was in my living.

In one of my dreams, I was taken by a guardian far above the earth. Earth was dressed in blue and green. She was lit from within. I was enveloped in a lush darkness that extended forever to eternity. Space was not empty. Rather, there was a profound depth of sound presence like an echo stacked within many layers of echoing. There were blues that don’t exist in everyday earthly existence. Stars and planets gleamed like giant colored diamonds. I was in a circle of exquisite belonging.

When I looked closer to the detail, I saw a lit field of stories. They were all over the world, through all time. The stories were continually shifting in shape and color. Where there was kindness, there was light. Meanness made upheaval. There were those who created light and shared it, and others who stole and devoured it.

Every story that ever happened made an imprint on the field. The past was just as mobile as the present and future. Everyone’s thoughts, dreams and actions were motivated by the story direction. And when I say everyone, also the animals, the plants, the stones, the winds. Everyone’s thoughts and dreams and actions were motivated by the story direction, the energetic particles around and through everything were made of what we Muskogee people called “vnokeckv” (uh-no-getch-kuh), or love. It is a fierce love that is strong enough to compel to beauty and right action. It is a love beyond what is fully comprehensible by any singular mind. We need all of our minds to comprehend us. it is happening now. In the dream, I understood that we are “ēkvnv” (i:kaná), Earth. In my Muskogee language, we are the story. All of this was shown to me. Then I woke up. I was much like you. I turned off the alarm, slid out of bed, and stepped into the details of the day.

We are all part of a living story, one that requires deep listening and understanding, inside and outside. This notion of being interconnected is a recurring theme throughout her work, as she encourages us to recognize our place within the larger narrative of life on Earth.

The Joshua tree, composed of two species, Yucca brevifolia and Y. jaegeriana (Asparagaceae), stands as the living symbol of the Mojave Desert, its twisted silhouette with a natural range almost perfectly tracing the boundary of the Mojave ecoregion, which includes Death Valley. But the tree that defines this so-called High Desert is now struggling. Rising temperatures, deepening drought, and a growing list of human pressures are converging to threaten not just individual Joshua trees, but the entire ecological web they hold together.

Joshua Tree: An Ecological Anchor

Our guest, desert ecologist James Cornett from a 2021 interview with Jessica Aldridge, called this special tree a keystone species. In fact, dozens of desert animals and plants rely on the tree’s branching structure, blossoms, roots, inner chambers, and decaying husks to fulfill their life cycles: skipper butterflies, termites, ants, desert night lizards, kangaroo rats, woodrats, and 20 species of birds, including Scott’s orioles, wrens, ladder-backed woodpeckers, and great horned owls.

The Joshua tree flowers exist in an mutually beneficial partnership with a single pollinator, the yucca moth, which lays its eggs inside the blossoms it fertilizes and is the tree’s only means of reproduction. Remove the tree, and that entire cascade of dependent life loses its anchor.

James Cornett shared with us his many decades of studying and writing about desert ecosystems, and what landscape changes we can expect in the future with a heating climate.

Moreover, many other important desert plants and animals face an uncertain future. There exist so many unique symbiotic relationships, from the ocotillo blossoms and migrating hummingbirds to the spiny teddy bear cholla and the innovative woodrat. Some scientists have gone so far as to compare the Joshua tree’s symbolic weight in the desert Southwest to the polar bear’s in the Arctic — both are sentinel species whose decline signals broader ecosystem stress.

A Tree Struggling to Reproduce

The clearest warning sign isn’t dying adults — Joshua trees can live over a century — it’s the absence of young ones. Researchers studying populations across the Mojave have reported seeing far fewer juvenile trees, a sign that something is interfering with seedling survival. Scientists note that seedlings sprouting today face a markedly harsher climate than the one their parent trees experienced when they were young, and it’s unclear how much the species can adapt within a single generation.

Compounding the problem, invasive grasses have fueled wildfires that have burned millions of Joshua trees in just the past five years, while rapid urbanization and energy development continue to shrink the tree’s viable habitat. Long-term modeling adds to the concern: the species’ range is known to have contracted significantly over the last 10,000 years, and current climate forecasts suggest widespread population losses could follow as warming continues.

Desert Tortoises and Solar: Caught Between Two Green Agendas

The same desert now hosts a different climate solution — utility-scale solar — that carries its own ecological toll. Desert tortoises, a threatened species, are frequently displaced from project footprints and relocated, a process far from benign. At the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, biologists initially estimated as few as 32 tortoises on site but ultimately handled and relocated close to 1,000 animals, at a cost of roughly $56 million. Ivanpah is partially closed in early 2026 after Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) terminated two of its power purchase agreements due to high operating costs and the rise of more efficient solar technologies. Oops.

To put into perspective solar so-called farms in the Mojave Desert, we turn back to Kim Stringfellow’s Mojave Project. She wrote:

Electricity generation has long been the largest contributor to atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂). In response, many countries are shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources that produce electricity with little or no carbon footprint.

At the same time, energy-intensive data centers supporting cloud streaming, artificial intelligence (AI), and cryptocurrency mining are growing rapidly, putting additional strain on the electrical grid. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that global electricity demand from these sectors will double in 2026, amounting to Japan’s annual consumption of 902 terawatt-hours (TWh). To put it in perspective, a single “hyperscale” AI data center can consume from 100 to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power between 80,000 to 800,000 homes.

A transformation is underway across the Desert West to meet current and future electricity needs, especially in California and Nevada’s biodiverse deserts, where vast, open areas are being converted into industrial energy zones that previously hosted desert tortoises, kit foxes, and old-growth Joshua trees. View-obstructing transmission lines will crisscross the land, and data centers may follow. This change, driven by a collision of sunlight, technology, and ecology, will be significant and permanent, and is reshaping the desert as we know it.

Relocation of tortoises carries real risk: federal agencies have estimated translocated tortoise mortality at approximately 15 percent, and in one Nevada solar project, dozens of relocated tortoises were killed by predators within weeks of being moved, likely because drought and disorientation left them more vulnerable.

Across the region, tens of thousands of acres of desert tortoise habitat have already been converted to utility-scale solar, and the species has seen a documented long-term, range-wide population decline. Some newer projects have tried to soften the impact — one recent facility raised its perimeter fencing several inches so tortoises could pass underneath, and tortoises have since been observed sheltering beneath the panels — but wildlife agencies still treat large-scale relocation as a serious, only partially mitigated harm.

The Fight Over Water at Cadiz

Threats to the Mojave aren’t limited to heat and habitat loss — water itself is contested. I have been spending a lot of time in the Mojave researching and touring for our High and Dry project on PBS SoCal. We have a two-part photo essay coming out soon, where we looked at the railroad, the alphabetical towns founded to serve water to the steam trains, the Route 66 passage through the desert that followed. The Cadiz Project, also known as the Mojave Groundwater Bank, was summed up well by Julia Sizek and Kim Stringfellow on Kim’s Mojave Project website:

Cadiz Inc.’s 34,000-acre property is located just south of the old Santa Fe railroad line between one of the last undeveloped stretches of historic Route 66. Here, a string of alphabetically named desert towns of Amboy, Bolo, Cadiz, Danby, Essex, Fenner and others were first established as eastern Mojave railroad water stops. Below Cadiz Inc.’s holdings lies the Fenner Basin, an ancient aquifer estimated to hold between seventeen million and thirty-four million acre-feet of water, slowly replenished by infrequent rainfall events occurring in the surrounding federally protected desert mountain ranges. The scarce surface water that seeps into the aquifer through gravitational forces is part of an unfathomable aqueous process that has occurred, largely uninterrupted, for thousands of years. A contentious public-private water grab pipeline may change that.

Trump and his cronies just green-lighted the federal pipeline permit for this project like a zombie that cannot be killed. Indigenous Mojave and Chemehuevi, environmental and conservation interests, and state officials argue the project would draw down the aquifer faster than it can recharge, drying up desert springs that sustain tortoises, bighorn sheep, and Indigenous communities who consider the water sacred.

Statement from Daniel Leivas, Chairman of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe:

“Our people have been here since time immemorial, and we will not allow the Cadiz Corporation and federal government to destroy the living landscapes that preserve and teach our traditional ways. That is why we are taking this fight for Indigenous rights and cultural survival to the courts. Ocean Woman is the Great Spirit of all water. The cycle and flow of the Living Spirit of water within all the trees, plants, people, animals, land and sky have been present since time immemorial. The ancient waters that formed and shaped the land we know today rest within the Earth below Cadiz. It is the living heart of the desert; to drain it would be to drain the life out of the entire desert. No profit is worth such desecration.”

The original permit pushed for under the previous Trump administration was vacated after a court found it had been approved without the legally required environmental review of groundwater depletion. The project now faces new federal lawsuits over this pipeline spanning more than 200 miles of largely federal land. They are stepping up to defend this region again from the senseless and continuous depredation. The dispute illustrates how, in a landscape already stressed by climate change, even a single water diversion project can ripple through an entire ecosystem.

What This Means for Joshua Tree National Park

Inside the park itself, distribution models have long suggested Joshua trees could lose the large majority of their currently suitable habitat within park boundaries by the end of the century, with the species persisting mainly at higher, cooler elevations that serve as climate refugia. In response, park managers have moved away from simply trying to preserve the status quo everywhere, toward a “resist-accept-direct” framework — deciding where to actively defend existing groves, where to accept inevitable loss, and where to assist the species’ migration into newly suitable terrain.

The long-term health of Joshua Tree National Park will likely depend less on halting change entirely than on managing it deliberately: affording the Joshua tree, and the desert ecosystem surrounding it, time to adapt, migrate, or be helped along by the people who have come to see it as irreplaceable.

Fiesta de la Tirana is an annual festival held in the unusual stands of Tamarugo trees, in the midst of the rolling pampas of the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The celebration happens in the locality of La Tirana during the week of July 16 in honor of both the Virgin of Carmen and the Virgen de La Tirana. La Tirana is the biggest geographically localized religious festival in Chile and attracts between 200,000 and 250,000 visitors during the week of celebrations, while the village’s permanent population normally numbers 5,000 inhabitants.

This includes a diverse array of visitors: the devoted, the curious, the observant, the vow-makers or pilgrims/dancers fulfilling their spiritual promises, and business folk selling their wares.

This small village streets are full of costumed, shielded, and masked dancers and brass bands with flutes, drums, and matracas, marching, fondas selling food, dust as they call it chuspa is everywhere, it is both extremely hot under a burning sun all day and freezing by night, fireworks exploding amid an atmosphere that carries the air of mystery, tradition, playful enactments, devotional expression, all sustained by the cult, the concept, the veneration of one of the two versions of the sacred virgins.

We should note that the Atacama Desert is mining territory, dominated historically by copper, silver, nitrate or saltpeter, and now lithium. The population of these hot rolling pampas and Andean Altiplano are forced to survive in this dangerous dance of the underground forces, dominated by what the Andean god of the underworld Supay, supreme lord of the Uku Pacha or underworld, a multifaceted force that represented shadow, night, darkness, chaos, and the inevitable transition of death.

Some in the Catholic Church see them as devils, but they are purveyors of both positive and negative forces in the universe. Others call them Uncle of the Mines. Thus was born the Diabladas, Dances of the Diablos between the good and the bad, the light and the shadow, played out at La Tirana and many other festivals across Bolivia and Peru.

Racial stereotypes; Chinese people as slaves, the portrayal of North American Indigenous peoples, the morenos or black Indigenous, the gypsies who we would not regularly use that derogatory term. My apologies to listeners who find these references offensive. All I can say is the portrayal of all these peoples is meant in veneration, in identifying with their place in society, in their way of living in the world. The dancers in La Tirana see these peoples as brothers and sisters to emulate through song, dance, and costume. I think Rodolfo makes this point well, but for those listening who might take this out of context, when you investigate further and actually experience the dances…

He studied journalism and holds an MA in Art History. He has worked in directing, promoting, and diffusing transdisciplinary projects. Furthermore Rodolfo Andaur has taken part in curatorial teams that focus on critical analysis and reflection about anthropocene, climate change, and eco-geopolitics in Latin America.

Not only those proposals produce knowledge through the visual arts, but they have also contributed to the dissemination of renewed thoughts to research into unknown territories. With this background his work has been prized both by Tarapacá Regional Government for his contribution to cultural management (2011), and for his participation in the international project called “examples to follow, expedition in aesthetics and sustainability” (2017).

Also he has been involved in curatorial residencies in Brazil, Denmark, Germany, México, Morocco, New Zealand, Poland, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, South Korea, and the United States. Rodolfo is currently a columnist in several online art magazines and visiting lecturer in a couple of universities and art institutions.

It is the final chapter of a groundbreaking documentary trilogy following Kiss the Ground and Common Ground, a cinematic exploration across five continents narrated by Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson.

So, what is regenerative agriculture, you ask? Rebecca defines it in many different ways and from alternative perspectives. Yes, it is an overused buzzword, but we agree it still has meaning.

To me, regenerative agriculture practices combine Indigenous knowledge with western science and technology to enhance life/ecosystem/soil while producing food and products. It is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming systems. It should eschew the use of petroleum fertilizers, noxious/poisonous herbicides and insecticides, unsafe genetically modified organisms and expensive single-use seeds. I wanted to give these details first because some entities push for a fake regenerative farming using all the same industrial monocrop, till-spray-feed-cut-spray-more-harvest model that results in depleted (dead, eroded) soils, contaminated (or absent) water, accelerated greenhouse gas emissions (and reflected heat in a bare-soil world), viral and bacterial outbreaks, farm bankruptcies, enormous wealth disparities, and increasing hunger.

This model focuses on topsoil regeneration and oh so much more. Biodiversity in organisms proliferate, leading to plant florescence, insect buzzing, and wildlife roaming. We want more rain. We want rain to soak into the soil, erosion to be limited, and whatever water runs off to be cleaned through the soil. We want the rain-soaked soil to hold onto that water, in collaboration with the hydrological cycle, which calls for more rain and cloud.

Anyone for ecosystem services? To make it simple, consider the two main types of climate disruption factors: 1) burning so much carbon it becomes the wet blanket over the atmosphere leading to a hot hot hot world, superstorms, ice melting, you know. And 2) then there’s the heat created/reflected/radiated from and rain-not-falling on the denuded bare soil we call fallow industrial agricultural fields, hard-packed, dry, unable to absorb or hold moisture.

Regeneration supports carbon biosequestration, increasing resilience to this thing they call climate change. Regeneration operates with the small water cycle to strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil, farm plants, farm animals, farm workers, people who eat from farms, you know.

Our success in this endeavor had to do with connecting with our Uruguayan visionary friend Pameluz Allala, who we knew from our experiences in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. She then introduced us to Rafo Nunjar, a self-taught musician, founder, curator, and owner of the Museum of Traditional Instruments Paccha, in Urubamba, Peru.

In this episode, Rafo takes us on a ride through the rich musical and cultural tapestry of Highland Peru. From the traditional sounds of the Andes to the vibrant celebrations that connect communities with their land, Rafo shares insights on the significance of music, instruments, and rituals in Andean culture.

Peru is massive, the third largest South American country, over twice the size of France. Lima, the capital on the coastal ribbon is the economic center of the country, where right now another right-wing dictatorial-descended Keiko Fujimori has seized power. Her neoliberal-free-trade-Trump-aligned-law-and-order-with-organized-crime-connections candidacy has been vaulted over the moderate-leftist Roberto Sanchez, thanks to votes coming in late from expatriated Peruvians in the U.S. Which sounds like fraud, with assertions that the U.S. Ambassador Bernie Navarro meddled in the election.

A major mobilization against these results is underway in Lima, Arequipa, and Puno, but let’s face facts. Alberto Fujimori is known for the crackdown on the Shining Path Maoist insurgency before his government collapsed in a mess of corruption and human rights abuses. His daughter is a three-time election loser who for many reasons had her vote total inflated enough to pretend to win. It’s up to the rest of us to not pretend to believe them.

Yet the rest of the country lives under another form of Indigenous self-government of the Sierra, averaging over 3,000 meters in altitude, 5,000 communities where Spanish is the second language, people living on steep, rocky, deforested land at excessive density, many without traditional services, infrastructure, and maintained roads.

Yet, the Cusco region we are reporting from has sophisticated water and irrigation canal systems managing running water drained from the high glaciers above, with a pastoral and agricultural subsistence, grazing llama, alpacas, and sheep, weaving their clothes from the wool, and growing potatoes, cereals, and vegetables. There is tourism. There is mining. There is little crime, but people have learned to live without many of the conveniences, and many of the headaches and expenses, we have in the states.

Highland Peru is not an easy place for an outsider to understand. The mountains rise in all directions, so it’s easy to never know where you are headed. There are Spanish conquest monuments and Inca ruins in every direction as well, but many civilizations predated them going back to 20,000 BC.

The Qhapaq Ch’unchu dance represents the native Inca warriors who hid out in the Amazonian jungle, known (in a pejorative way) as the wild people. They usually bring fruits, huayruro (a native plant to Peru who’s seeds are used in handcrafted jewelry), and other products that were used to trade. The troupe is composed of the ch’unchu king (head of the dance), a group of ch’unchu organized in two parallel rows, and a kusillu or monkey (a dancer in disguise). They are also accompanied by a child or chunchu reicito.

Music and dance dominate this Andean heartland, the instruments, the quena and charango, and the costumes, have their place and particular meaning in what seems almost constant festivities. So that is where we will begin with musician and all around social commentator Rafo Nunjar.

Greetings from the Sacred Valley of Peru. This show was recorded in the Atacama Desert in Chile in 2024. While the cultural and environmental landscape remains the same, political exigencies have accelerated in a negative direction from the perspective of Eduardo Galleano’s 1973 work, Open Veins of Latin America. Chile has elected a Pinochet acolyte, and son of a Nazi, José Antonio Kast, and we have to wonder, how are political memories in the world so short?

We did a recent show with Rights Action on Honduras, and the latest on the Hondurasgate scandal that no one knows about is that drug trafficker Juan Orlando Hernandez was released by Trump, through the advocacy of Netanyahu’s Israeli murderous fanatics to continue their proxy-hegemonic dance in Latin America.

What does Israel want with a drug trafficking former president? They are creating a nation-state-club based on war, violence, and hate, with the victims, Palestine, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Venezuela, Cuba, the list could go on.

Trump pushed right-wing-stooge Nasry Asfura with threats to the Honduran people of bankrupting the state, and it worked, maybe the claims of fraud or more than just claims. They have now returned that country to the flavor of dictatorship sponsored by both U.S. political parties, began by Obama and Hilary Clinton in 2009, and lasted until 2022. It’s not a pretty picture, I’m sorry to say.

Then this sordid cabal got together with Javier Milei, Argentina’s inflationary nightmare known for chainsawing social programs and selling off publicly owned assets. The fraternity of fascists is attempting to subvert left-leaning governments in Mexico and Brazil and upcoming elections in Colombia.

The sordid fun continues in Bolivia, where workers are in open revolt against the neo-liberal Milei-style government of Spanish-born Rodrigo Paz Pereira. The movement which closed the airport for a while and shut down the entire society demanded Paz resign and new elections planned. Paz and his people, meanwhile, are looting Bolivia’s Central Bank, leaving the public coffers empty. They are doing the same thing they did with Venezuela and its gold.

This is why the U.S. wants pliant governments, so they can plunder the wealth of countries, and then proceed to bail them out with insane loans that will never be paid back. Milei’s regime also took the gold from Argentina’s central bank and won’t tell where it is. See any theme’s here? Is Chile next?

Wilfredo Dorador is the father of the renowned University of Antofagasta academic Cristina Dorador, who specializes in the study of the microbiology of the salt flats (salitreras) of the Atacama that are so threatened by the present lithium boom. Chacabuco is an abandoned nitrate or saltpeter town in the Atacama Desert. It became a concentration camp during the Pinochet regime in 1973. To this day it remains surrounded by about 98 lost landmines, but we visited without getting blown up in 2025.

These are the streets
of my early childhood.
This is the salt
the loneliness that overwhelms them.

This is the home of the absent sea.
And there are hands like the bread of the new encounter.
The pepper and its breeze,
the neighborly voices,
the pupils, the longings of my beloved;

Joy is the swarm towards the origin.

These are the Open Veins of Latin America, that continue to resound as either wondrous places where the angel of frost sings, or the site of plunder and murder. We really do have a choice in this world. I choose that frost angel, no matter how cold she might be…

Consider that Big Tech is destroying U.S. farmland to build $700 billion data centers that could become outdated tech albatrosses within three years. We know how our computers become obsolete within a few years, planned by the capitalist race to keep us spending and throwing away. Trump signed an executive order streamlining permitting for any project over $500 million, which lets developers bypass local opposition in exchange for the extreme dreams of these multinational behemoths.

Saline Township in Michigan voted no to a $16 billion Open AI-Oracle data center. The developer, Related Digital, founded by billionaire Stephen Ross, has a Vice President married to Michigan’s Secretary of State, who is now running for governor. The township couldn’t afford to fight when these monsters sued, so they settled. Construction started immediately.

The buildings are permanent, the destruction is permanent, but the chips are disposable.

A data center in Fayetteville, Georgia, drained 30 million gallons of water through hook-ups unknown to the local utility. Local residents figured it out when their water pressure disappeared. A Project Blue data center in Tucson, Arizona, was caught trucking municipal water out of the city that had voted against the project. The problem is government and utility regulatory frameworks are not prepared to deal with the sheer industrial immensity of these hyperscale projects.

On this show we share a panel discussion put together by Pasadena California Climate Commons with leaders working at the intersection of technology, energy, and sustainability. Here they explore how the rapid rise of artificial intelligence is reshaping demand for water and power across modern data centers and what is being done to address it.

​This is a little different and maybe techno-optimist than our last recent show on Artificial Intelligence Data Centers.

Yet it is helpful to listen to industry people share their version of both sides of the equation:

• ​The environmental footprint of modern computing and data infrastructure

• ​How AI and advanced computing can also support climate research and clean energy innovation

• ​Practical steps developers, companies, and policymakers can take to ensure technology supports a more sustainable future

There is much more to be said than these folks we are sharing on this show. We face an urgent situation with AI and the imperative movements towards moratoria and all-out rejection of many of these data centers. The problem we face is yes, Big Tech can do better, and we hear that in this show. Yet they really aren’t forced through strong regulations to do better.

Generating their own energy isn’t really enough when we are talking 9 gigawatts of power necessary. Diesel and natural gas generators are the go-to source before solar panels on so many of these projects. Closed loop water systems still require significant water.

Noise abatement techniques employed by regulators have no idea how to mitigate the 24-hour low-frequency hum reported from neighbors of these projects, measured as infrasound, sound below the human hearing. This causes dizziness, nausea, vertigo, and sleep disruption. The noise comes from cooling systems and on-site gas turbines used to “generate their own power.”

Utah’s Box Elder County project is the largest in the world, 62 square miles. There is really no mitigating a project like that. The sheer size of many more of these projects is bordering insane. Strong regulations, not the ones written by corporate captured agencies, seem to never be enough when the convergence of political and financial power is at stake. So, listen with an open mind, because there is great need for everyone to make their voices heard in these struggles.

Earth Day — April 22 — marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. After witnessing the ravages of the Santa Barbara oil spill and the burning of Cleveland’s toxic Cuyahoga River in 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed a national teach-in in the spirit of the student anti-war movement. By promoting public consciousness about air and water pollution, he and his co-founders advanced environmental protection onto the national political agenda. The movement now in its 56th year remains as relevant and necessary as ever.

Here are some of the voices we feature on this show. We start with Wendsler Nosie Senior of Apache Stronghold. He has been advocating for the protection of sacred sites, in particular Oak Flat (known in Apache as Chi'chil Biłdagoteel), located in Arizona’s vibrant Tonto National Forest where Native Americans have gone to worship, pray, and conduct religious ceremonies since forever. Resolution Copper, a joint venture of two foreign companies, plans to mountaintop-remove what is estimated to be the largest copper ore deposit in North America at Oak Flat.

The best teacher to wake you up is Mother Earth. The best teacher is the water, the trees, the wind. To look outside and say, this is real.

Without this, you can’t live. That’s when your true religion starts. Because we’re intertwined together. You know we need them as much as, you know, they need us.

But with respect, we work together, we help each other. So I just say that to the people out there, you already have it. You don’t have to look for it, but go there and greet yourself.

Go in there, go there, and then as you’re in those deep sleeps, it will begin to talk to you. Because the wind speaks through the trees, when the trees make the noise. And then in a deep sleep, then it’s translated, Then it gives you visions.

There’s times that the wind will hit the tree and it’ll sound like somebody talking to you. That’s what we lost because we were colonized. And we’re all forced to live in this capitalist world. So if I could leave that for anybody around the world, don’t forget that. Because it was everywhere. Not just here among Native people, it was everywhere. And the only reason why we know it is because they’re trying to make us like them. Where we turn off the volume and we hear nothing from Mother Earth. And we look at it as a commodity, we look at it as a resource, we sell it. That’s what they want to teach us. Scary.

Happy Earth Day.

As happy and joyous as we can be, standing together, united against insanity,

the fact that we are using technology that’s using up all the water is just to say, yes, water is life and AI is death.

But on the upswing of everything that we’re doing, we know that we need to protect, defend and honor Earth Mother.

And she gives us everything we need.

And I don’t see how we can go another year, another two years without putting a stop to the extraction.

And the only way that we’re going to do that is standing united and definitely with the same plan.

It’s simple. Protect, defend, and honor our Earth Mother.

Anything else is just so, so, so not being a better relative.

I just need you all to know with a loving heart and good intentions to find something to do today different.

Do something out of your comfort zone.

Be daring. Be willing to speak up and speak out.

And hold your head up high.

Because we are Earth Mother’s children and we’re all related.

Just some people don’t get invited to the dinner on Sunday, right?

All right. With that I say happy and the best Earth Day.

We can make it possible to stop this extraction, stop the poisoning and do everything we can to be gentle and to be graceful and to be respectful of our Earth Mother.

The economic growth we all pretend is central to our existence is not shall we say sustainable. And another way is possible without having to move into a palapa hut made of palm fronds propped up against a formerly illuminating light-pole on Sunset Boulevard after someone stole all the copper wiring.

Anyone who argues our present reality is working has to stop taking whatever their psychiatrist is recommending. Our U.S. war machine economy led by Israeli-government-influenced politicians are set to invade Iran with boots on the ground. Don’t forget Lebanon too (already did Gaza and Syria and Venezuela and…). Bombing campaigns, regime change attempts, murdering of civilians and destroying institutions and infrastructure, to get the oil and gas flowing into U.S.-controlled corporate donors. This is a business model for the criminally deluded.

The only result is chaos, which if you followed Jamie Dimon’s comments this week, is a Goldman Sachs money pot. We know, as Smedley Butler famously said, “War is a racket.” But for THEM, the criminal corporatist-imperialists who seem to thrive, while it is the rest of US who pay the price. Violence, murder, exploded residential towers, girls’ schools, universities, hospitals, polluted skies, rivers, oceans, world economy in shambles, $8 a gallon for biodiesel even.

A Cosmovision of Interconnectedness

Yet there is another way, and this is more of the bigger way. Not just the war question, but how we live our society. We cannot lose sight of what Henry David Thoreau understood well, living under the white pines and oaks around Walden Pond. Voluntary simplicity engenders freedom. Friedrich Nietzsche thus spake, “Blessed be a modest poverty.” Consider the disasters wrought on us by a sort of dualism that separates human and nature, man and woman, white and non white, normal and abnormal.

The mountaintop removed to seize the rare and non-rare-earth minerals is the same as opening up your head to mine your consciousness, to sell your ideas. There are other ways than spilling the blood and poisoning the rivers to get at the wonders hidden in our land-and-body organism.

Consider how in the Peruvian Amazon, the Ashaninka people have been resisting extractivism by relying on Kametsa Asaike, a cosmovision that envisions the world as “a network of mutually constituted human and non-human actors.” Contemporary Ashaninka life is centered on the belief inherited from their ancestors that teaches emotional restraint and the sharing of food in order to create the right type of Ashaninka person. Yet, this understanding applies to what we consider civilization: school education, leadership and conflict resolution, money, intercultural health, and a strong political federation to defend their right to pursue kametsa asaiki.

Okay, this can get abstract and esoteric, but to transfer out of this killing mode is going to take some mental and physical work. I was looking into the Indigenous Tayal-Taiwanese concept of Gaga– everything is connected - to take on the problems encountered by overpopulation, technology, capitalism. Of course, traditional societies have something that we have been socialized out of in what is called the U.S. and Europe: a connection to the land and the ancestors, and an invisible mytho-structure. Unpeel the layers, and we can find the lands we now inhabit can assist in instilling that ethic if you just put your ear to the ground.

When the power of the wild gets a seat at the decision making table, we will be forced to rethink everything.

The Beauty of Degrowth

So that’s what we’re talking with Stan Cox about in this show. And we feature multiple clips of scholars such as Joan Martinez Alier, Jason Hickel, and Richard Wolff to round out the movement perspective.

How do we go from here? Wars for oil and supremacy, climate collapse, massive strife between us and them to there retrofitting our cities and suburbs for ecologic health and human welfare. Living interconnected, living together. And it’s a cliche, but harmony, okay, that’s what we’re working for and not the cliched version. I’ll leave you all with this counter-thought…

Solutions, Solutions

Yes, we are utopian here, a wilder-utopia where you have to deal with the frogs and gulls and bugs and fierce wind out of the north. Consider that opposition to the concept of Green Growth does not mean we are against a technological transition to cleaner and more efficient form of energy consumption. We subscribe to Project Drawdown’s postulation of priority solutions to climate collapse (only a sample). These do not have to be about growth, just re-orientation for survival on a changing world.

• Reducing Food Waste

• Plant-rich diets

• Tropical Forest Protection

• Educating girls

• Family Planning

• Utility-scale Solar

• Silvopasture

Yes we must take action in our lives, have faith we can overcome these bullying domination-themed institutions and their mouthpieces, dream larger than the rest of us, and make good on what 8 million people demanded at No Kings recently: WE CAN AND WILL DO BETTER.

But first, a commentary on what’s going down…

We as a society are facing a massive convergence of crises, climactic and geopolitical. So this winter, 2025-26, for the Western U.S. has been nightmarish. We have been undergoing and are now under the influence of really astonishing meteorological anomalies. This now has produced a record-shattering March heat wave. That term really just doesn’t seem to do justice to the hot-summerish brutality of this never seen during the November to March period, a ridiculously resilient ridge of high pressure.

It’s another of a long list of these crazy anomalies, exaggerated weather, that we can’t even come up with ways to describe it.

People say, “It’s always hot and sunny in the desert.” Weather is not climate, so let’s step back from this for a minute. Nearly 200 daily temperature records were broken yesterday, including 30 all-time March records. Four locations hit 112 degrees, setting a new March temperature record for the U.S., in some cases besting both April and May records.

The western snowpack’s gonna just be gone, completely melted and drained away. What little there was, as and there’s some areas in the west that had some snow, but mostly not.

And these already drying rivers, like the Colorado and its disappearing reservoirs, will continue to evaporate in the hot, broiling sun.

As our mountains dry up, so do the grasses, bushes, trees, making wildfire more likely.

As Professor Stefan Romsdorf said, “At breakneck speed, we are leaving the stable Holocene climate in which human society developed and thrived.”

Of course, this is a man-made disaster on a global scale. And we keep compounding that.

War For Oil and…

And now we have Trump’s second war for oil.

Venezuela.

Now Iran.

There is also an argument that Iran is a war for Israel too, which our Secretary of State has already pointed out, but let’s be real. This is the U.S. imperial business model, first pushed in 1953 when the CIA launched a coup against the popular democratic government of Mohammad Mossadegh. He made the mistake of nationalizing the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, which would become British Petroleum, or BP, and the Shah was placed at his abusive helm of dictatorship.

Yet in this most recent case of Trump regime change it is definitely a suicidal project. For us, for them, for everyone on this planet. Political, social, and environmental.

What are the U.S. and Israeli and in response Iranian militaries doing? Bombing oil and gas fields. These fires smoke horrific oil clouds and methane plumes. It’s raining mercury and soot down on the cities, as well as food farms.

They’re bombing cities. Poisonous lead, dust that will travel on the wind.

Radioactive shells, depleted uranium, armor-piercing, shot, killed, exploded, and left. So they’ll poison the soil forever.

Factory strikes, releasing forever chemicals.

And let’s not leave out the desalination plants, just cutting off the water, brutalizing people and communities.

No Wars for Solar and Wind, but…

So renewable energy is something we’re not going to fight wars for.

There’s always issues with every energy supply.

These spiraling fossil fuel prices from the war. Strait of Hormuz is closed, which has so many impacts throughout the global economy, just completely turning it upside down. And Trump is threatening a ground invasion of Kharg Island, the forbidden island, to forcibly unblock the flow of that oil we are all addicted to. Sounds like an idiot plan to get lots of people killed, but…

Is this what some of you voted for from The Peace President?

Did the war planners think ahead, war-game that this was going to happen?

Well, they thought that they got Venezuela’s oil and it would protect them against this. But, you know, that, of course, wasn’t true because it’s just a fantasy.

The system is in place.

OK, and right now it’s completely disrupted.

A Renewable Society for…

So George Monbiot, who I don’t always love, commented in a recent piece in the Guardian about the cost of renewables. So keep in mind, renewable energy is plentiful and highly competitive.

The sun is shining, the wind is blowing. This relative cost is low, but resultantly it’s low profit. You know, they can’t make money on it.

They’re closing a major solar plant, or trying to close major solar destruction of the desert out in California. Because it’s just not making them money. And of course it was a fossil-gas-burning, technical, economic, and environmental nightmare from the start. Kim Stringfellow has lots to say about this. That’s why we need to put these solar panels on our roofs, where we have local control and community know-how, not these profit motive companies/utilities that are destroying irreplaceable desert habitats.

It’s a whole other issue that we can confront in another post.

But fossil fuels, of course, are uncompetitive and high profit. Billionaires and their media proprietors gain much by investing in them. And then their reports talk about, well, we need this war for oil.

And it’s a short-term pain for long-term gain, as we featured on the last week’s show.

The Long View and Mike Davis’ Socialist Utopia

Look, we are in a situation right now. And I don’t know how we’re going to get out of it. But let us keep in mind, let’s keep focused on the way forward. Because it’s going to get us through.

There’s a lot of good people, pushing forward for positive things. So we need to keep in mind that we can overcome what’s happening with these wars.

But of course, the wars must be stopped as soon as possible.

And keep in mind, as Dr. Paul Dorfman wrote on X, that more power was generated worldwide from renewable energy than from coal. And 91% of new renewables are now cheaper than fossil fuels. With all of that implies for global energy policy and climate action. Wind and solar worldwide currently generate 70% more electricity than nuclear reactors, while each year nuclear adds only as much net global power capacity as renewable adds every two days.

Not impressed.

The nuclear apologists need to step back, okay?

Nuclear is now facing the same challenges as fossil fuels. Uncompetitive costs, stranded assets, a polluting legacy, and unrivaled competition from renewables.

Because the sun keeps shining and the wind keeps blowing.

And the oil that we need, well, we need to overthrow Iran and Venezuela to get that oil.

And, you know, what does a war cost? There are some costs, and right now we’re paying for it at the pump, food prices rising, what’s next?

So we don’t have to fight a war to get out in front of the sun and capture it, okay? It’s not without impacts, as we always say, but it’s a fraction.

So we need to change. We need to jump off this aircraft carrier to nowhere. And the apologists for this administration, for the war machine, you need to listen to reason because you are, you know, turning this country/world/ecosystem/economy upside down.

So on that note, we’re going to hear from Mike Davis, and come together to turn things around, ASAP.

Our U.S. elites—and many of the elite-supporters—suffer from this sense that we can do anything we want in the world with no consequences. Our military-industrial-congressional-complex has invested the wealth of this country into a mass killing machine. We have all these arms, we have all these bases. If there’s a nation out there that we don’t like, we can change their government. And they should just be happy for the help.

This is a quote from Policy Tensor. It’s on Substack. It says in the Anthropocene, catastrophes, including the meta catastrophe of runaway global heating, are man made. Specifically, they’re caused by an incongruence between elite discourse and ground realities. “Ground realities” means the wild spaces we cannot see, the natural environmental processes invisible to us, and the communities of people, cultures, of whom we don’t know very well. We don’t know what they’re capable of. We just assume, and I’m talking of the United States versus other nations that are called “developing.” Put simply, elites think the world is a certain way, but it is not. And that is what causes the catastrophe.

We’re talking about the catastrophe of runaway global heating, which we’re experiencing everywhere. And this U.S. government and their supporters call it a climate scam to sell solar panels. Instead they start wars for OIL. Not wars for solar panels, mind you, but the substance-burnt that causes all the problems. Heroin addict behavior.

They say, “We’ll just get this war over. It’ll take a week, it’ll take five days, it’ll take three weeks, it’ll take six months, it’ll take eight years.” They’re not sure, they have no plan, but they just think they’re going to win because they should win. Because, right, we told them that they shouldn’t do this, but they’ve done it.

The history of the modern era, according to Policy Tensor, is a history of catastrophes with their origins in elite group-think. You might call them the Epstein Class group-think. These are the people who are running the show here. Many whistle-blower types have been trying to prove to the rest of us just who these Epstein Class Elites are. Have we seen anyone fired? Impeached? Disgraced? Inconvenienced? Not in the U.S. There’s been complete impunity. And this war is going to show us, this Iran bombing war, this brutal campaign is going to show us how wrong we are.

Can I just say that we have a clear and unambiguous case here of not just catastrophically bad foreign policymaking, but also military planning. Policy Tensor continues to explain what they mean here:

They (the elite decision makers) did not anticipate that Iran would escalate immediately to counter attacks across the Gulf. They did not anticipate that Iran could destroy U.S. air bases in the region and push back U.S. forces. They did not anticipate that they will be unable to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. All of the failures stem from the same overriding premise that Iran was weak and defenseless, that the U.S. was so powerful that it could simply dictate political terms.

They simply could not understand why the Iranians were not capitulating to their demand that they disarm and resign themselves to being ruled by the air, by Israel. Okay, basically we need to rethink how we see the way forward for this great country, the United States, for this great society of the Western world, including Western Europe and Australia and other countries and how they interrelate with the rest of the world. With West Asia, with East Asia countries like China, with India, with the BRICS countries, South America. This notion of force/economic dominance, heavy handed, tight-fisted, militaristic pounding.

Right now the United States has violent-militaristic-processes going on in Ecuador. They’re trying to starve/regime-change Cuba. They just kidnapped Venezuela’s leadership and they’re stealing their resources, their oil. I just heard about gold being stolen. Okay, who’s next? Where’s next? What is this thinking?

So we need to rethink. So that’s what this show is about it is about how do we survive into the future. And the only way that we, the royal we, not just me, not just a small community, but this society, if this society is going to survive, they’re going to have to rethink. But the, unfortunately reality is the society that I live in is showing evidence that they’re not going to survive. Okay, so keep that in mind, all of us, because there’s something called the Samson option. Now look it up. But, that is the potential of nuclear weapons being used in this conflict. When things get really desperate, who is overseeing this? Who is guarding against this? Who is saying, no, that’s not the way forward? I don’t know if anyone’s in charge unless their name is Benjamin Netanyahu.

We had Kelly Ryerson on the show in 2023, and we update you all on her work and relevant clips with Robert Kennedy Jr. and Rep. Thomas Massie. We also feature excerpts of that interview, as she covers the basics about glyphosate, Monsanto/Bayer’s Roundup herbicide, and its impact on environmental health.

Glyphosate is a common ingredient in herbicides, including Bayer/Monsanto’s infamous weedkiller: Round Up. The latter is one of the world’s most widely used herbicides with various applications including: weed control in agriculture, vegetation control, as a crop desiccant, in consumer home gardens and lawns, and in massive aerial sprayings to control illegal crops. It is also used extensively in home gardens and lawns, landscape, ornamental nursery, forestry, roadside and turf management.

With the introduction of glyphosate-resistant GM (genetically modified) crop varieties (aka. Roundup ready crops) in 1996, beginning with soybeans and later: cotton, canola, corn, alfalfa, and sugarbeets, glyphosate’s use in agriculture increased significantly. Monsanto is now owned by pharmaceutical giant, Bayer.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic in humans”; studies had confirmed it caused cancer in lab animals. However, the EPA maintains that glyphosate is safe for human use, despite multiple studies demonstrating otherwise. RoundUp and glyphosate-based products have had devastating impacts on our food systems, agriculture, public health, and ecosystem in the broadest sense.

Introduced in 1974 as part of the “Green Revolution,” Roundup (the first glyphosate-based product) was touted as a panacea for poverty for its capacity to increase crop yields and agricultural production. Glyphosate radically changed the face of farming on this continent. Small family farms, once the norm, were quickly overshadowed by the industrial farms of Big Ag and Big Chem. Biocides (herbicides, pesticides, fungicides), GMO’s, monocropping, and soil degradation became the standard over biodiversity, regenerative farming practices, and soil health.

We can attribute our current, astounding rates of chronic and degenerative diseases to this industrial-scale transition. Cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, digestive disorders, diabetes, obesity, autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, allergies, kidney, liver, and autoimmune diseases, are often correlated with widespread use of glyphosate, as well as reproductive issues, infertility, and sperm count declines.

We don’t have to accept our own superfluity. I don’t argue with Shumer’s premise, to use AI and get ahead of the game, to go on fancy machine friends, Chat GPT or Claude, and make it guess for you/entertain you/social post for you, often making ridiculous mistakes or hallucinations. The dangerous kind.

Yet another perspective is to ask: AT WHAT COST. The recording-your-every-data-whim ethic has become an epidemic self-own. It accelerates power-burning-polluting-consuming, paying off the trusty oligarchs who ironically seem to need your money. At the expense of wild animals and winter snow, and embeds mass surveillance heating up your fingertips, your “smart” doorbell, biometric sensors, your EV “entertainment system” complete with facial recognition and constant report-backs to the mother ship. They can even predict, mostly unreliably and dangerously if you are a non-confomist, how you walk, talk, think, dream, emote.

In 2025, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta invested $465 billion in building out computing and networking infrastructure for AI, according to Goldman Sachs. Data is the new oil, and AI is the noxious refinery processor building our monetized personal profiles to cast us as characters in its own late-capitalist fascist charade.

“The race toward superintelligence is reshaping infrastructure requirements across every industry,” said Michael Wall, executive vice president at Prime Data Centers in the Los Angeles Times, which built the data center next to downtown LA in Vernon. “We’re working to give businesses the foundation they need to build and deploy the next generation of AI models — faster, more efficiently and at massive scale.”

One Harvard economist estimated that without data center investments, the U.S.’s gross domestic product growth could have come to a near standstill this year. Which is frankly more make believe. Thank you, Harvard, can we hear from someone from a community college who might actually understand what’s going on?

Los Angeles has more than 70 data centers. The hub for them has long been the One Wilshire building in downtown Los Angeles. It is the destination for massive undersea cables that connect the U.S. to Asia.

Prime and other developers, including Goodman Group, CoreSite, and Digital Realty, are planning hundreds of megawatts of new data center capacity in Vernon, said Darren Eades, managing director of JLL, who specializes in data centers.

Speaking of megawatts, consider the electricity necessary to power this worldwide-data-grab-operation. Data centers today consume 415 terawatt-hours of electricity, more than Japan’s entire grid. Artificial Intelligence accounts for nearly half of that surge, driven by hyperscalers whose cooling towers evaporate five million gallons per day per facility, enough to supply twenty thousand homes.

By 2040, under projected 15–20% annual growth cited by Goldman Sachs and the International Energy Agency, AI alone will demand 3,800 terawatt-hours, roughly the electricity used by the United States today.

Electricity grids already strain, so consider this upscaling. Rolling blackouts might turn Manhattan into Guatemala City, the latter who regularly face disruptions. The diesel backups for hospitals and nuclear power plants. Coal plants in West Virginia, China, and India are restarting to meet demand, adding millions of tons of carbon dioxide annually, even as AI systems promise to “model” the climate, they intensify it. This is structural escalation, not innovation.

Water tells the darker story. Current hyperscaler demand is estimated at hundreds of billions of liters annually. By 2030, projections approach six trillion liters — equivalent to the annual flow of ten Colorado Rivers.

By 2040, estimates rise toward fifteen trillion liters, comparable to draining the Nile. Los Angeles consumes roughly one billion liters daily. AI will outdrink Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston combined.

Hereditary Chief Phil Lane Jr., of the Ihanktonwan and Chickasaw Nations, the man who led our climate march back in 2013, has been speaking out about a better way forward. He spoke on the Binding Planetary Peace Treaty, initiated at the World Peace Gathering, July 2025, at Dripsey Castle, Cork, by Indigenous elders, spiritual leaders, and global peacebuilders, proposes structural redirection: end armed conflict, reallocate trillions from military expenditure toward ecological restoration, submit to the United Nations General Assembly, and open for global ratification, by all members of our Human Family.

If we lived under the Binding Planetary Peace Treaty to End War, initiated at the World Peace Gathering in Ireland, July 10–20, 2025, where nations chose cooperation over competition, the development of artificial intelligence would take on an entirely different character. Instead of fragmented national strategies, the United States, China, Russia, Europe, and others racing to outbuild one another, we could imagine a shared planetary framework rooted in unity rather than rivalry. In such a world, AI would not be an instrument of dominance, but a coordinated intelligence infrastructure serving the whole human family. Such a future begins with collective choice.

Consider a different way forward. Let’s not only consider it, but work to unite all of us for a better future. According to Chief Phil Lane, without coordinated governance, Artificial Intelligence becomes a force multiplier for surveillance, digital enclosure, and fortified compute enclaves. With coordinated restraint, we reclaim the Planetary Commons: water for life, equity, energy, and computation for restoration rather than extraction.

He concludes with the reminder that this is not a prophecy. This is arithmetic. We have fourteen years (really much less than that), not generations, to decide whether Artificial Intelligence accelerates collapse or supports planetary stabilization. The biosphere does not negotiate. The algorithm does not care who pays the cost.

The essay begins with the concept of a mirage in the desert, and what that really is according to the Indigenous folks:

The spirits are seen in the morning in the desert, in the form of mirages, of people, bodies of water, and villages. Thus, the people know the spirits still live and show their power to the people. We know that we are not forgotten.

The blooming desert miracle that would become Palm Springs (P.S.) all began with the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Springs. The sacred water source of the original Cahuilla People was considered more than just a commodity, but a living being, a sentient entity with its own rights. The Agua Caliente valley location was used for warm baths, potable water, irrigation, and healing powers. The hot springs and the surrounding grove of indigenous Desert Fan Palm trees spawned the name Palm Springs, a place that would attract spa retreatants, SoCal weekenders, retirees, and snowbirds from all over the world.

In the essay I cover the esoteric concept of the power of the living forces, called ?kiva?a; the powers of sun, wind, fire, and water; that the Indigenous Cahuilla had to work within to survive in the desert. Today we have bent the rules of living within our means, and I posit a way we could re-frame our concept of condo and golf course development working within the universal forces of the nature.

Let’s just say if you run afoul of the forces of ?kiva?a, then you have to face ancient sacred beings like Tahquitz, who lives in a cave high on Mount San Jacinto, told about by Francisco Patencio:

Tahquitz was a man of great power. He was one of the first creators. But he did not do any good… He became a very bad spirit. He speaks through thunder and lightning, and is seen everywhere. He kills the people, and also spirits of the people. He kills animals as well. Causes the wrecks of trains and automobiles, and delights in everything that makes people trouble.

Now, when Tahquitz invests one with his malign power, they may become a billionaire, or even a president, or even a billionaire-president. Yet, they are a danger to us all. Francisco warns:

Now in the early days, Tahquitz appearing in the dreams of some men of power gave them some of his power.

But this could be prevented or cured by those very individuals of power or other healers who can see these things:

…so that they knew when Tahquitz had taken the spirit of some of the people and they had his power to make him drop them and they cured them.

Maybe the Cahuilla translation might be inexact, but understand that the people—and systems—causing great damage to our world can be cured, despite their various dangerous dreams of unchecked capitalist glory. But we must adopt this INDIGENOUS system of reciprocity with the forces of nature to have any hope for tomorrow.

And I thought I would muse just a bit on the legacy of the work of Joseph Conrad and his piece, Heart of Darkness, that has so inspired me and became the root of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now surreal Vietnam meditation. It also was a literary pre-formation of my experiences traveling the Patuca River in Miskitu Territory of Honduras. My forthcoming novel Monkey Charm goes there. This literary vision can be applied to the confused era of today’s U.S. imperialist ransacking of societies and their political formations, Palestine, Venezuela, Syria, Iran, many more before and to come, under the illusion of rare-earth-plunder/pretend-democracy/non-drug-interdiction/regime change, whatever. Listen to Michael Parenti, he lays it all out in his 1986 lecture.

This following Conrad fragment of Marlow’s trip upriver into the Congo wilderness to see Kurtz into the Heart of Darkness, our own personal/societal heart, attempts to sum up what we are losing, trashing, chopping down and leaving behind a ruined world…

“Going up that river was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted the earth and the big trees were kings. An empty stream, a great silence, an impenetrable forest. The air was warm, thick, heavy, sluggish. There was no joy in the brilliance of sunshine. The long stretches of the waterway ran on, deserted, into the gloom of overshadowed distances. On silvery sandbanks hippos and alligators sunned themselves side by side. The broadening waters flowed through a mob of wooded islands. You lost your way on that river as you would in a desert and butted all day long against the shoals trying to find the channel until you thought yourself bewitched and cut off forever from everything you had ever known once—somewhere—far away—in another existence perhaps. There were moments when one’s past came back to one, as it will sometimes when you have not a moment to spare to yourself: but it came in the shape of an unrestful and noisy dream remembered with wonder amongst the overwhelming realities in this strange world of plants and water and silence. And this stillness of life did not in the least resemble a peace. It was the stillness of an implacable force brooding over an inscrutable intention. It looked at you with a vengeful aspect.”

Let’s all keep in mind to overcome the inscrutable intention that hangs over our worlds. And remember the vengeance will be slow, invisible, until one day very large and undeniable. There is still time for all of us to get on the road to beauty and wonder, so let’s get there, ASAP.
