History leaves traces. Repeated behavior tells us which traces deserve another look.

That is not the same as proof.

Patterns can mislead us. Coincidences happen. People commit suicide. Governments improvise. Institutions collapse. Powerful people know other powerful people without belonging to the same conspiracy.

But the opposite mistake is equally dangerous: treating every event as isolated simply because no signed document has yet been found connecting A to B.

Intelligence services do not normally leave minutes saying:

This is our forty-year plan.

So this is not an accusation and it is not a finished theory.

NoteRemember that China makes 100 year plans!

It is a working hypothesis.

I want historians, intelligence professionals, archivists, journalists, Russian speakers and people with access to primary sources to attack it, correct it — and, where the evidence supports it, fill in the missing pieces.

The distinction matters throughout:

Fact is fact. An indication is an indication. An allegation is an allegation.

Do not mix them.

But do not ignore the pattern either.

Start before Putin

The strange Russian association with people falling from windows did not begin with Vladimir Putin.

In March 1948, only weeks after the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk was found dead below a window of his official residence. His death was initially announced as suicide. More than seven decades later, the circumstances remain sufficiently unresolved that Czech police reopened the case as a murder investigation in 2025 after new archival material emerged.

And Masaryk was not even the only extraordinary window case surrounding that takeover.

Former Justice Minister Prokop Drtina, an opponent of the Communist takeover, also fell from a window shortly after the February coup. He survived. Contemporary scholarship noted the extraordinary fact that both men were found beneath windows in the immediate aftermath of the Communist seizure of power.

Does that prove a Soviet method?

No.

It proves something much narrower, and more useful:

Ambiguous deaths around political transitions, followed by official explanations that leave questions unanswered, predate Putin by generations.

That historical continuity deserves attention.

Then comes August 1991

The familiar story is simple.

Hard-line Soviet officials formed the GKChP, isolated Mikhail Gorbachev, attempted a coup, sent armored vehicles into Moscow, and failed after three days. Boris Yeltsin became the heroic face of resistance, famously standing on a tank outside the Russian White House.

Three civilians — Dmitry Komar, Vladimir Usov and Ilya Krichevsky — were killed during the confrontation.

The coup collapsed.

Democracy won.

Except that this description leaves out what happened to power.

Within days, Yeltsin was not merely defending constitutional order. He was rapidly transferring authority away from Soviet institutions and toward the Russian republic.

And here is the detail that changed my own view of the events:

On September 5, 1991, U.S. National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft sent President George H.W. Bush a memorandum describing Yeltsin’s moves.

The U.S. National Security Archive summarizes Scowcroft’s assessment using the remarkable expression:

“This ‘second coup’ by Yeltsin…”

That phrase was written weeks after the event — inside the American national-security system.

Not thirty-five years later on social media.

A serious European analysis has reached essentially the same conclusion, describing the Yeltsin power grab as a second coup and arguing that this was ultimately the coup that mattered.

Suddenly the right question changes.

Not:

Did the August coup fail?

Clearly, the GKChP failed.

The better question is:

Who emerged with powers he did not possess before August 19?

The answer is Boris Yeltsin.

Watch what happens to Gorbachev

There is a piece of film that deserves far more attention.

After returning from his isolation in Crimea, Gorbachev appears publicly with Yeltsin.

Yeltsin produces documents.

Gorbachev indicates that he has not read them.

He is made to deal with them publicly, in front of the cameras, while Yeltsin demonstrates that political initiative has moved away from the president of the Soviet Union.

Finnish broadcaster Yle’s former Moscow correspondent Jyrki Saarikoski later described the scene in unusually direct terms: after Gorbachev returned from Crimea, his time was over, and Yeltsin publicly humiliated him before the cameras.

Forget their formal titles for a moment.

• Watch their behavior.

• Who appears to possess power?

• Who is responding to whom?

• Who controls the documents?

• Who controls the agenda?

• Who controls the room?

Institutions tell us who should be powerful.

Behavior often tells us who is.

Then people start dying

Again, discipline is essential here.

I am not claiming these people were murdered.

The official explanations were suicides.

But the sequence belongs on the timeline because the concentration is extraordinary.

On August 22, Soviet Interior Minister Boris Pugo, one of the coup participants, was found shot dead (3 bullits in his head). His wife was also fatally wounded. The official account was murder-suicide/suicide.

On August 24, Marshal Sergei Akhromeyev, former chief of the Soviet General Staff and Gorbachev’s military adviser, was found dead in his Kremlin office. His death was reported as suicide.

On August 26, Nikolai Kruchina, the Communist Party official responsible for administering its enormous financial resources, fell from his apartment. His death was also treated as suicide. Contemporary reporting emphasized that Kruchina would have possessed intimate knowledge of the party’s finances.

Three senior figures.

August 22.

August 24.

August 26.

That sequence does not prove murder.

But good investigation does not require us to choose prematurely between “obviously murder” and “nothing to see here.”

The proper question is:

What did each man know, whom had he spoken to, what records did he control, and what testimony disappeared with him?

That is an archival question.

Someone may already know the answer.

The state collapses. The security culture does not necessarily collapse with it.

This is where Vladimir Putin matters.

Putin’s official biography records that he entered the KGB in 1975. He subsequently moved into politics, became director of the FSB in 1998, and was appointed prime minister in August 1999.

Then came December 31, 1999.

Boris Yeltsin resigned and explicitly transferred presidential powers to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Putin became acting president. The Kremlin’s own archive preserves both Yeltsin’s statement and Putin’s address that day.

Think about the institutional arc:

KGB officer → political administration → Kremlin → FSB director → prime minister → presidency.

Again, that does not prove that Putin secretly orchestrated 1991.

He plainly did not occupy a position from which we can responsibly claim that.

But it raises a different systems question:

What if the institution disappeared faster than its people, networks, methods and worldview did?

Organizations are more than logos and organizational charts.

Destroy the box on the chart and the relationships may remain.

People remain.

Knowledge remains.

Loyalties remain.

Files remain.

Methods remain.

And opportunity returns.

1987: another thread enters the timeline

Donald Trump visited Moscow in 1987.

Former Soviet and post-Soviet intelligence figures have subsequently made much stronger claims about that visit. Most dramatically, former Kazakh intelligence chief Alnur Mussayev alleged in 2025 that Trump was recruited by the KGB under the codename “Krasnov.”

That allegation has not been substantiated by publicly available documentary evidence and must be labeled accordingly. Trump has repeatedly denied working for Russia.

So I am not putting “Krasnov” in the fact column.

I am putting it in the:

Show us the evidence column.

And there is an important conceptual point here.

An intelligence service does not need someone to be a conscious, contracted spy for that person to become useful.

Cultivation, access, ego, business interests, ideological affinity, personal weaknesses, flattery, financial dependence, social relationships and kompromat are different mechanisms.

The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee’s bipartisan investigation established the existence of a broad Russian active-measures campaign against the 2016 American election and described cyber operations, information operations and efforts to exploit vulnerabilities in the American political system.

The useful question therefore is not only:

“Was he an agent?”

It is also:

“Was he useful?”

Those are very different questions.

Then add Jeffrey Epstein

This is where the timeline becomes uncomfortable.

Trump and Jeffrey Epstein were socially acquainted for years. In 2002 Trump said publicly that he had known Epstein for fifteen years, called him a “terrific guy,” and remarked on Epstein’s interest in beautiful women, including women “on the younger side.” Their social association is documented; that fact by itself is not evidence that Trump participated in Epstein’s crimes.

Epstein, however, was not merely a wealthy criminal.

He was an extraordinary access node.

His network reached into finance, politics, academia, royalty and international diplomacy.

In January 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the release of approximately 3.5 million pages of material responsive to the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The DOJ itself warns, in effect, that disclosure does not authenticate every allegation contained in raw investigative material.

And Russian connections appear repeatedly in the released material. Reuters reported that Russia is mentioned thousands of times in the files, while the Kremlin rejected suggestions that Epstein had been a Russian intelligence asset.

Most intriguing are documented attempts by Epstein to gain access to senior Russian figures.

Files released in 2026 show Epstein asking former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland to help arrange contact with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and saying he had insight that could be useful to Vladimir Putin. Jagland said he would raise the matter with Lavrov’s assistant. Those revelations have contributed to wider investigations in Norway into relationships surrounding Epstein; Jagland has not been convicted of wrongdoing in connection with them.

That does not prove Epstein worked for Russian intelligence.

But it destroys another simplistic assumption:

Epstein’s universe and Russia’s political elite were not entirely separate worlds.

There were contact points.

Now we need to understand what flowed through them.

Stop looking for a Hollywood conspiracy

Perhaps the biggest mistake is imagining that a long-term intelligence strategy must resemble a movie script.

It does not require Putin to sit in a room in 1987 and design every event through 2026.

That would indeed be megalomania.

Real adaptive power can be more sophisticated.

Keep relationships alive.

Cultivate useful people.

Collect information.

Understand weaknesses.

Preserve optionality.

Exploit crises.

Change tactics when circumstances change.

Allow other people to pursue their own ambitions when those ambitions happen to serve your interests.

Never depend on one plan when you can maintain ten possibilities.

That is not omniscience.

It is strategic patience combined with adaptation.

And this may be the central hypothesis worth investigating:

The Soviet Union may have collapsed as a state much faster than the Soviet security state’s networks, culture, methods and strategic logic disappeared. Putin did not need to invent that tradition. He inherited it, learned from it, adapted it and eventually gained the power to use it.

If this hypothesis is wrong, evidence should kill it.

If it is partly right, evidence should refine it.

That is what serious inquiry is for.

What I am NOT claiming

I am not claiming that Putin personally designed a forty-year operation beginning in 1987.

Maybe Trump has been proven to be a Russian intelligence agent.

Probably the “Krasnov” allegation has been proven.

Epstein files might also proove he did work for the KGB, FSB or any other intelligence service.

Very probably Pugo, Akhromeyev, Kruchina or Epstein were murdered.

Putins August 1991 GKChP coup was a smart false-flag operation designed to install Yeltsin, who later rewarded the man who made him President and gave the position back to Putin.

Those would require evidence we do not currently have in our hands.

But here is what I am saying:

There are enough documented traces that dismissing the facts are no longer intellectually satisfactory.

The United States’ own national-security records called Yeltsin’s post-coup actions a “second coup.”

Yeltsin emerged from August 1991 with power while Gorbachev emerged politically crippled; contemporary and later accounts document the dramatic public reversal between them.

The former KGB officer, who found #krasnov eventually became Yeltsin’s chosen constitutional successor and inherited the presidency when Yeltsin resigned.

Russia conducted documented active-measures operations aimed at the American political system.

Trump had a long-documented social relationship with Epstein, while newly released Epstein material reveals contact pathways toward senior Russian figures.

These facts do not complete the puzzle.

They establish that there is a puzzle.

So help fill it in

This is why I am publishing the timeline rather than a conclusion.

I want the gaps exposed.

If you have primary documents from August 1991, bring them.

If you know who issued — or withheld — the orders concerning Yeltsin and the White House, bring them.

If you have reliable material concerning Pugo, Akhromeyev or Kruchina, bring it.

If you can document the continuity of personnel between KGB structures, post-Soviet institutions and Putin’s later security apparatus, bring it.

If you have evidence supporting or disproving the “Krasnov” allegation, bring it.

If you can trace Epstein’s Russian relationships beyond social contact and into actual operational behavior or demonstrate convincingly that there was no such connection bring that too. In short We need the #Epstein files!

Correct the timeline rather than attacking the question.

Because history leaves traces.

And when institutions change names while behaviors, relationships and methods keep reappearing, those traces deserve to be followed.

Not because we already know where they lead.

Because we don’t.

A new report from Google Threat Intelligence Group should make us stop and think.

Not panic.

Think.

The report describes the pro-Russia influence ecosystem as something far more structured than random propaganda. It identifies five broad strategic goals: to undermine democratic processes, split Western coalitions, strengthen Russia’s own image and regional interests, maintain internal stability inside Russia, and legitimize Russia internationally.

That matters.

Because when we discuss disinformation, we often reduce it to individual lies, fake accounts, bots, deepfakes, or manipulated images. Those things matter. But they are not the core.

The core is the narrative.

What picture of reality is someone trying to build?

What doubts are they trying to activate?

Which divisions are they trying to deepen?

Who benefits if we begin to mistrust each other, our institutions, our alliances, and our own ability to act together?

Google’s report also points to something that is now becoming impossible to ignore: generative AI is accelerating the influence cycle. It can support planning, reconnaissance, research, targeting, content production, translation, and adaptation of messages. What previously required time, language skills, networks, and resources can now be done faster, cheaper, and at greater scale.

But we should not fool ourselves.

This did not start with AI.

The Soviet Union developed its machinery for influence, disinformation, and what became known as “active measures” long before the digital age. During the Cold War, Sweden was one of the countries repeatedly exposed to Soviet espionage and influence efforts. This included attempts to plant narratives, infiltrate organizations, shape public debate, and influence political opinion without the true sender being visible.

The methods have changed.

The logic has not.

Find the cracks in a society.

Amplify them.

Find voices that already exist in the public debate and that, out of their own conviction, arrive at positions that serve Moscow’s interests.

Then strengthen those voices.

This is where the phrase “useful idiot” often appears.

It is a harsh expression, and it is often used carelessly. It is also frequently attributed to Lenin, but that attribution is not supported by preserved evidence. The phrase seems to have developed in Western political language during the Cold War. Still, regardless of its exact origin, it points to something real.

The most effective carrier of a narrative is rarely the obvious sender.

It is often a person who genuinely believes what they are saying.

That is what makes influence difficult to handle in a democracy.

We cannot and should not label every uncomfortable opinion as hostile influence. A free society must allow disagreement. It must allow criticism of government, NATO, defence policy, military spending, sanctions, Ukraine policy, and everything else that belongs in democratic debate.

But a democracy must also be mature enough to see the difference between legitimate disagreement and systematic narrative amplification that benefits an authoritarian aggressor.

That is the uncomfortable part.

Some worldviews have been shaped over decades by exposure to narratives originally designed to serve Soviet, and later Russian, interests. This is not always about conscious bad faith. Often it is about habit, identity, old reflexes, and arguments repeated so many times by credible voices that they begin to feel like common sense rather than claims that should be examined.

We see this especially in questions related to defence, NATO, and support for Ukraine.

Some arguments still carry the emotional structure of the Cold War, even though reality has changed radically. Europe is no longer facing the same security environment. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has shown, with brutal clarity, that imperial thinking did not disappear with the Soviet Union.

And here we need the right order of thinking.

First: purpose.

Then: method.

Then: technology.

If we start with technology, we will talk mainly about bots, AI-generated images, fake videos, platform rules, and detection tools. All of that matters, but it is not enough. The real question is not only whether a specific piece of content is fake.

The deeper question is:

What narrative does this content serve?

Does it weaken democratic trust?

Does it split Western coalitions?

Does it make support for Ukraine look pointless, corrupt, dangerous, or morally suspect?

Does it portray Russia as misunderstood, inevitable, traditional, or globally legitimate?

Does it make free societies doubt themselves more than they examine the aggressor?

That is where influence becomes powerful.

Not when it convinces everyone.

But when it makes enough people hesitate, doubt, disengage, or turn against one another.

AI does not change this logic. AI accelerates it.

It lowers the cost of producing believable content. It makes tailored messaging easier. It allows influence actors to test, adapt, and scale narratives faster than before. In other words, AI does not create the old machinery. It gives the old machinery a faster engine.

So what should democratic societies do?

Not censorship.

Not panic.

Not suspicion against every citizen who thinks differently.

We need something more demanding: democratic quality.

That means education, source criticism, historical memory, institutional trust, and a public culture strong enough to ask hard questions without destroying the conversation.

Who benefits from this narrative?

Why does this argument feel obvious to me?

What assumptions have I inherited?

Am I reacting to today’s reality, or to yesterday’s reflexes?

Am I defending peace, or am I unintentionally weakening the victim of aggression?

Am I criticizing power, or am I repeating a narrative designed by another power?

These questions are uncomfortable.

They should be.

Because the defence of democracy is not only a technical problem. It is not only a cyber problem. It is not only a communications problem.

It is a quality problem.

A society that cannot understand how narratives work will become easier to manipulate. A society that cannot distinguish between disagreement and hostile amplification will either become naive or repressive. Both are failures.

The difficult task is to remain open without being gullible.

To defend free speech without becoming a delivery mechanism for authoritarian narratives.

To allow disagreement without ignoring the machinery that exploits disagreement.

The new report from Google Threat Intelligence Group is important because it reminds us of this: the apparatus is not random. It has goals. It has methods. It has history. And now it has AI.

Old logic.

New speed.

That is why democracies need more than technical security.

They need democratic quality since chaos and uncertainty create a system where very wealthy actors (oligarchs), platform owners and authoritarian states are given more room to maneuver than democratic institutions and ordinary people.

They do not need to be coordinated. It is enough that their interests partly point in the same direction. It is actually a systemic connection, not primarily a conspiracy.

It is strategic theater.

And the intended audience is not only Russia.
Nor is it only the United States.

It is the world.

The message is unmistakable:

China no longer sees itself as simply another great power.
China increasingly sees itself as the organizing center of a new global order.

And perhaps most importantly:
Xi Jinping wants the world to understand that China thinks longer than the West does.

China Thinks in Centuries. The West Thinks in News Cycles.

Western democracies are often trapped inside:

• four-year election cycles

• quarterly earnings pressure

• media outrage cycles

• short-term political survival

China operates differently.

The Chinese Communist Party thinks in terms of continuity, state endurance, and civilizational time horizons.
American politics often struggles to think beyond the next election.
China routinely thinks beyond the next generation.

That difference matters more than many in Washington are willing to admit.

Xi Jinping appears to understand something fundamental:

Democracies are incredibly powerful when trust is high.
But democracies become deeply vulnerable when trust erodes from within.

This is why information warfare matters so much.

Not because propaganda alone wins wars —
but because fragmented societies eventually lose the ability to coordinate.

Russia Became More Valuable to China After Ukraine

Many in the West assumed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would isolate Moscow permanently.

Instead, it accelerated Russia’s dependence on China.

Today Russia increasingly relies on China for:

• trade

• industrial components

• financial pathways

• technology access

• geopolitical legitimacy

Xi does not need to “control” Putin in the traditional sense.
He only needs Russia to lack viable alternatives.

And after Ukraine, that dependency has deepened dramatically.

Yet Russia still possesses assets China values enormously:

• vast natural resources

• military capabilities

• nuclear deterrence

• Arctic access

• geopolitical disruption power

• expertise in hybrid warfare

This creates an asymmetric but mutually useful relationship.

Russia destabilizes.
China consolidates.

Russia creates friction inside Western systems.
China patiently builds industrial, technological, and geopolitical leverage over time.

That combination is strategically dangerous.

The Strange Detail About Longevity

Reports have occasionally surfaced suggesting that Xi and Putin have privately discussed longevity, health, and extending life — including references to traditional health practices and dietary methods.

If true, many Western observers may laugh it off as eccentric.

That would be a mistake.

Because it reveals something deeper about how authoritarian systems evolve.

In highly centralized political systems, leaders increasingly become embodiments of historical continuity.
Their personal survival becomes psychologically tied to the survival of the national project itself.

Xi Jinping does not appear to see himself as merely a temporary officeholder.
He increasingly presents himself as a civilizational steward.

Putin similarly frames himself less as a president and more as a historical figure restoring Russia’s destiny.

To Western audiences, this can sound absurd or theatrical.
But strategically, it matters.

Leaders who think in terms of legacy behave very differently from leaders trapped inside polling cycles.

Hybrid Warfare Is Not Primarily About Military Power

Many Americans still think hybrid warfare means cyberattacks or online propaganda.

That is only the surface layer.

The real objective is to weaken:

• institutional trust

• social cohesion

• decision-making capacity

• long-term coordination

• shared national identity

Once citizens begin viewing each other as enemies rather than fellow countrymen, the system starts weakening itself internally.

That is the true battlefield.

And this is where America faces a profound challenge.

America’s Greatest Vulnerability Is Internal Fragmentation

The greatest threat to the United States may not be China’s navy or Russia’s nuclear arsenal.

It may be America’s inability to sustain long-term strategic coherence.

When:

• institutions lose legitimacy

• politics becomes permanent outrage

• truth becomes tribal

• expertise becomes suspect

• governance becomes performative

• every issue becomes cultural warfare

…strategic endurance collapses.

Xi Jinping almost certainly sees this.

Not necessarily because China is invincible.
China has enormous internal problems of its own.

But Beijing appears increasingly convinced that the United States may exhaust itself faster than China does.

That is the core strategic bet.

Democrats Need to Understand the Scale of the Challenge

This is where Democrats — particularly institutional Democrats — must think more clearly and more structurally.

The challenge is not simply “winning the next election.”
The challenge is preserving the long-term adaptive capacity of democratic civilization itself.

That requires rebuilding:

• trust

• institutional competence

• infrastructure

• industrial resilience

• civic cohesion

• strategic patience

• educational quality

• technological sovereignty

Democracy cannot survive indefinitely as a system optimized only for short-term emotional reactions.

A civilization that cannot think beyond the next election eventually loses to civilizations that can think beyond the next century.

Democracies Must Rediscover Long-Term Thinking

None of this means democracies should imitate authoritarianism.

Quite the opposite.

But democracies must relearn how to:

• build durable institutions

• invest long-term

• protect social trust

• maintain strategic consistency

• reward competence over spectacle

Because in the end, this is not only about Xi Jinping or Vladimir Putin.

It is about whether open societies still possess the discipline, wisdom, and cohesion necessary to survive in a world where their adversaries are playing a much longer game.

History is rarely decided by whoever appears strongest in the moment.

More often, history belongs to whoever can sustain direction the longest.

Fast reactions.
Anger.
Fear.
Instinct.
Us versus them.

But almost no reflection.
No consequence analysis.
No institutional responsibility.
No long-term purpose.

Just speed without direction.

When leadership becomes narcissism disguised as strength, we do not get courage.
We get chaos.

When truth becomes optional, democracy becomes fragile.

When every critic becomes an enemy, leadership turns into loyalty cults.

He burns them.

Alliances.
Institutions.
Trust.
The rule of law.

And the most dangerous part is that many people still mistake this for strength.

It is not strength to escalate everything.
It is not strategy to attack everything.
It is not leadership to never admit failure.

It is short-term domination with long-term destruction.

“No turning back” may sound powerful.
In reality, it often means you have destroyed every road home.

History shows something important:

Authoritarianism often defeats itself by becoming too visible.

The lies become too obvious.
The corruption becomes too shameless.
The oligarchs become too greedy.
The performance becomes too absurd to hide.

Hungary and Viktor Orbán remind us of this lesson:
when power believes it is untouchable, it often accelerates its own decline.

Democracy is not strengthened by silence.
It is strengthened when the public finally says: enough.

The oligarch era may not end with revolution.
It may end because people simply stop believing the performance.

Like dinosaurs, some systems survive for a long time because people assume they are too big to fail.

Until suddenly, they are not.

Democracy does not need perfect people.
It needs enough people willing to think slowly, defend truth, and protect institutions before it is too late.

Quality creates trust.
Trust protects democracy.

And when lies become too loud, sometimes that is exactly when democracy starts fighting back.
