This is one of those stories:

For those of you who don’t know me, I was raised on a ranch in southwestern Wyoming. Ranch life has a way of teaching responsibility early, whether you feel ready for it or not. One spring during calving season, when I was probably eleven or twelve years old, it was my turn to take the dreaded middle-of-the-night calving check.

Now, I’ve always had a very active imagination. I don’t really need television to entertain me — my own imagination does a pretty good job of that all by itself. And unfortunately, at two o’clock in the morning on a cold, moonless Wyoming night, that imagination was not really my friend. Half asleep, I pulled on my heavy chore coat and boots, shoved my hands into my gloves, grabbed the flashlight, and stepped out into the darkness. The house behind me felt warm and safe. The barn ahead of me felt a long way off.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Suddenly, I was standing in complete darkness. The kind of darkness my granddad used to say was as “black as the inside of a cow.” I couldn’t see the ground beneath my feet, couldn’t make out the outline of the corral fence, couldn’t even tell exactly how far I was from the barn. Immediately, my imagination went into overdrive.

Every sound became suspicious. Every shadow felt threatening. I was sure something was out there waiting to pounce out at me: a wild critter, some lurking stranger, or maybe I’d simply trip over something hidden in the dark and break my neck before anyone even knew where I was.

I just stood there for a moment, frozen somewhere between the comfort of my bed and the responsibility waiting for me at the barn.

And in that moment, I realized I had a choice to make; I could turn around and go back to what was safe and comfortable. Or I could move forward into the unknown and do the hard thing my dad had entrusted me with. So, with more fear than courage, I decided that being brave mattered more than being comfortable. Being faithful to what my Dad asked of me had to overcome my fear.

I took one hesitant step forward. Then another. And within a few feet, I noticed it - a tiny pinprick of light in the distance. Dad had left the corral light on behind the barn. It wasn’t enough light to illuminate the whole path. It didn’t suddenly make the night feel less dark. But it was enough to give me a reference point and guide me forward.

Enough to help me find my bearings. Enough to keep me moving in the right direction until I reached the barn, flipped on the lights, found another flashlight in the vet room, checked the cows, and finally headed back to bed.

The next morning, when I gave Dad my report, I could sense the quiet satisfaction parents have when they know their child chose courage over comfort.

And Dad said something that stuck with me: he told me he always made sure to leave the corral light on during calving season, just in case one of our flashlights failed. He wanted us to be able to find our way, even in the darkest of dark nights.

When I think about fear in my life now, those words come back to me.

Because life with God sometimes feels a lot like that walk to the barn in the middle of the night. I want a floodlight for the whole journey, but so often God gives me just enough light for the next few steps. Enough to keep moving, putting just one foot in front of the other. Enough light to remind me that I’ve not been abandoned in the darkness. Enough to help me choose faithfulness over fear, obedience over comfort, and courage over retreat.

Over the summer, I’m going to spend some time sharing from a passage of Scripture that I have been camped at for a while now: Psalm 27, a psalm that beautifully reveals God’s light, salvation, and strength in the midst of fear and uncertainty.

Each week, I’ll share one verse along with some personal reflections and truths God has been impressing on my heart through this chapter.

If fear is something you are wrestling with right now. . . fear of the future, fear of circumstances, fear of what feels unknown or overwhelming. . . then this Psalm is for you.

So pull up a chair, sit down at the Table with me, and let’s open God’s Word together to discover the peace, courage, and confidence that can only be found in Him.

Grace Under Wide Skies is a reader-supported publication. Even now I can still remember the sensation of being underwater. I opened my eyes and saw nothing but muddy darkness all around me. To my seven-year-old mind, it felt as though I’d sunk to the bottom of an ocean. Then, through the murky water, I saw my father’s legs. A moment later, his strong hands reached down and pulled me up.

I probably panicked for a moment, but that isn’t what I remember most. What I remember is the overwhelming sense of peace and security I felt as Dad lifted me out of the water and held me close.

In many ways, that memory captures the role my father has played throughout my life. He often made me feel safe. Growing up, during seasons when I felt overwhelmed, uncertain, or as if I were drowning beneath the weight of circumstances, his steady presence brought reassurance and strength.

As we celebrate fathers, father-in-law, grandfathers, brothers, sons, and the many men who serve as father figures in our lives, I have found myself reflecting on the tremendous importance of fatherhood. In a culture that increasingly minimizes, mocks, or criticizes the role of fathers, we would do well to look beyond social media, entertainment, and popular opinion and instead consider what God says about the value and calling of fatherhood.

1. A Father Walks in Integrity

“The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.” — Proverbs 20:7 (NKJV)

God desires integrity to be one of the defining marks of a father. Integrity is “the quality or state of being complete or undivided” (Merriam-Webster). A father who walks in integrity lives consistently, practicing what he believes and striving to honor God both publicly and privately.

Children thrive when they know they can trust their father. A man of integrity is not double-minded or unstable (James 1:8), constantly pulled between the ways of God and the ways of the world. Instead, he stands firm because his trust is anchored in the Lord. His life becomes a living example of faithfulness, obedience, honesty, and loyalty. By keeping his word and living what he teaches, he shows his children what authentic leadership looks like.

2. A Father Teaches

“Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight.” — Proverbs 4:1-2 (ESV)

A good father intentionally participates in the education and discipleship of his children. Teaching requires time, patience, and consistency, but its rewards are immeasurable.

Whether through formal instruction or everyday conversations around the dinner table, in the pickup, or while working side by side, fathers have countless opportunities to impart wisdom. But before a father can effectively teach, he must first be willing to be taught himself. True wisdom begins with knowing God and understanding His Word.

The influence of a father who teaches biblical truth and models spiritual growth cannot be overstated. His instruction helps shape not only his children’s minds but also their hearts and worldview.

3. A Father Provides

“Which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?” — Matthew 7:9 (ESV)

A father’s provision offers children a beautiful picture of the faithful provision of our Heavenly Father.

When children experience a father who works diligently to care for their needs, they gain a tangible example of God’s care and generosity. An earthly father’s provision points beyond itself to the God who promises to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

No earthly father provides perfectly. Every dad has limitations and shortcomings. Yet even imperfect provision can point children toward a perfect Father who never fails, never forgets, and never withholds what is ultimately best for His children.

As Andrew Murray wisely wrote, “Every experience of the love and blessing of a home on earth can be a ladder by which to rise up and get nearer to the great Father-heart in heaven.”

4. A Father Disciplines and Corrects

“My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when He corrects you.” — Proverbs 3:11-12 (NLT)

Discipline is rarely enjoyable—either to give or to receive. Yet loving correction is one of the greatest gifts a father can offer his children.

When discipline is patient, consistent, and rooted in love, it produces “the peaceful fruit of righteousness” (Hebrews 12:11). Discipline is not about punishment for punishment’s sake. It is not about control, anger, or forcing children to simply “toe the line.” Rather, godly discipline seeks to guide, teach, and shape a child’s character.

Because a father loves his children, he helps them understand the difference between right and wrong. He corrects them because he desires their growth and flourishing. A Christian father’s greatest hope is that his children will increasingly reflect the character of Christ, and loving correction is one of the tools God uses to help accomplish that purpose.

5. A Father Protects

“In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and his children have a refuge.” — Proverbs 14:26 (HCSB)

One of the greatest protections a father can provide is his own fear of the Lord.

Biblical fear is not terror but reverence, awe, honor, and submission before God. A father who fears the Lord learns to exchange his own wisdom, plans, and desires for God’s. As he grows in wisdom, he creates an environment of safety, stability, and spiritual protection for his family.

A child will always be safest with a father who loves God and seeks His guidance. Through his example, children learn where true refuge is found—not ultimately in their earthly father, but in God Himself.

A godly father’s role is not to replace God as protector, but to faithfully point his family to the One who is their ultimate refuge and strength.

6. A Father Loves

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.” — Psalm 103:13 (NIV)

A father’s love shapes a child’s understanding of identity, belonging, and worth.

Children who know they are deeply loved by their fathers are better equipped to form healthy relationships and navigate life’s challenges with confidence. A father’s love is strong yet gentle, protective yet patient, steadfast yet tender.

Love is the motivation behind every other aspect of godly fatherhood. It is because he loves his children that a father pursues integrity, teaches diligently, provides faithfully, disciplines wisely, and protects courageously.

He recognizes that his children are a gift from God and a stewardship entrusted to his care. Because of this, he seeks to love them in a way that reflects the love of their Heavenly Father.

7. A Father Leaves a Legacy

“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.” — Proverbs 17:6 (ESV)

A father’s influence extends far beyond his own lifetime.

The decisions he makes today will affect future generations for years to come. Scripture repeatedly calls parents to pass God’s truth from one generation to the next (Deuteronomy 6:6-9), creating a legacy of faith that endures long after they are gone.

A father’s greatest inheritance is not land, possessions, accomplishments, or financial success. It is the legacy of a life devoted to God. When fathers teach their children to know, love, and follow the Lord, they leave behind a treasure that far outweighs any earthly inheritance.

The impact of a godly father echoes through generations.

Today, let’s thank God for the fathers and father figures He has placed in our lives. Let’s

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" I’m a Christian writer, speaker, ranch wife, mom, and disciple-maker with a deep love for God’s Word and a passion for helping others know Him more fully. I live beneath Wyoming’s wide skies, where life has a way of teaching lessons about faith, perseverance, grace, and dependence on God.

For years, I’ve written Bible studies, devotions, articles, and messages for churches, women’s ministries, and discipleship groups. Along the way, I’ve discovered something that continues to surprise me: people are hungry for truth. Not just inspirational quotes or quick fixes, but the deep, life-giving truth found in Scripture.

That’s why I created Grace Under Wide Skies.

This space is for those who want to grow deeper roots in God’s Word, develop a biblical worldview, and learn to follow Jesus faithfully in everyday life. My goal isn’t simply to provide information; it’s to encourage transformation. I want to help you move beyond simply reading the Bible to understanding it, living it, and viewing the world through the lens of God’s truth.

Here you’ll find biblical teaching, devotional reflections, discipleship resources, and practical encouragement for real life. Some posts will take us deep into Scripture. Others will explore how our faith shapes the way we think, live, work, parent, serve, and navigate a rapidly changing culture. Occasionally, you’ll find stories from ranch life, because our ranch is the backdrop for so many things God has taught me in ordinary places.

The name Grace Under Wide Skies reflects both my Wyoming roots and a spiritual reality I never want to forget: every one of us lives beneath the vastness of God’s grace. His grace meets us in our failures and our victories, in seasons of abundance and seasons of waiting, in moments of certainty and moments of doubt. No matter where we find ourselves, His grace is always greater than our need.

In a world filled with noise, confusion, and competing voices, I believe Christians need something solid to stand on. We need to know what we believe, why we believe it, and how to live it out with courage, conviction, and compassion. We need deep roots rather than shallow faith. We need truth that anchors us when circumstances change.

My prayer is that this space will encourage you to open your Bible, think deeply, love God more fully, and walk more faithfully with Him. I hope you’ll find practical tools for spiritual growth, biblical answers to life’s questions, and encouragement for whatever season you’re facing.

Most of all, I hope you’ll be reminded that God is faithful.

So pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and stay awhile. There is always room at my the worn table under the big Wyoming skies.

I’m grateful you’re here, and I’m excited to grow alongside you.

Welcome to Grace Under Wide Skies.

— Jana

Thanks for reading Grace Under Wide Skies!
