The First High: How Losing Over $135,000 Taught Me to Master Technical Analysis

Most people believe traders lose money because they don’t understand the stock market.

That wasn’t my problem.

My biggest obstacle wasn’t the market—it was the mindset I brought into it.

Growing up, money was always tight for me. My dad worked long hours to provide for our family while we shared a home with my cousins. From an early age, I understood that financial security wasn’t something you could take for granted. It had to be earned.

When I discovered the stock market nearly 23 years ago, I wasn’t looking for excitement. I was searching for freedom. I believed trading could become the vehicle that changed my financial future.

What I didn’t realize was that I also brought fear, impatience, and the desire to get rich quickly into every trade.

Looking back now, I wasn’t investing.

I was gambling with hope.

My First Taste of Success

My introduction to the market came from a friend named Chris, who worked at Local Fitness gym. One day he mentioned a penny stock called APTY. Curious, I downloaded the TD Ameritrade app (Schwabs) and bought my first shares.

Then something incredible happened.

The stock exploded.

My account grew faster than I ever imagined. My unrealized profit eventually reached over $82,000.

I remember staring at my screen thinking my life had changed forever.

I felt invincible.

There was only one problem.

I had no exit strategy.

I didn’t understand risk management. I wasn’t evaluating the company’s fundamentals or asking whether the move was sustainable. I simply believed it would continue climbing.

It didn’t.

Momentum faded, the company struggled, and the stock eventually collapsed. I watched almost every dollar disappear.

That experience taught me one lesson I’ll never forget:

An unrealized gain is just a number until you lock it in.

Hope Can Be Expensive

Determined to recover, I shifted my attention to CVM a bio company.

Unlike my first trade, I convinced myself this was a long-term investment.

I believed regulatory approval for immunology cancer drug would eventually send the stock soaring.

Instead, I spent nearly two years waiting.

Every delay became another reason to hold.

Every decline became another opportunity to average down.

Instead of following price action, I followed hope.

When I finally admitted I was wrong and sold, I had lost more than $30,000 of my own capital.

That trade taught me another painful lesson.

Hope is never a trading strategy.

Chasing Losses

After those experiences, I became obsessed with making my money back as quickly as possible.

That’s when I discovered options.

I treated earnings announcements like lottery tickets. Every company reporting earnings looked like the opportunity that would erase my previous mistakes.

Instead, I accumulated another $25,000 in losses.

The situation became so difficult that I borrowed money from friends and family just to continue trading.

At that point, I wasn’t managing risk.

I was trying to outrun my losses.

Everything Changed

After years of frustration, I stopped asking the wrong question.

Instead of asking,

“What’s the next stock that’s going to make me rich?”

I began asking,

“How do consistently profitable traders survive?”

That question changed everything.

I stopped chasing headlines and started studying charts.

I became fascinated with price action, market psychology, support and resistance, volume, trend structure, and recurring technical patterns.

Rather than searching for certainty, I began searching for probabilities.

The market isn’t about predicting the future.

It’s about recognizing repeating behaviors and managing risk when those opportunities appear.

Over time, mastering technical analysis completely changed how I approached trading.

The Biggest Lesson

The biggest lesson wasn’t about charts.

It wasn’t about indicators.

It wasn’t even about technical analysis.

It was about discipline.

The traders who survive aren’t the ones who win every trade.

They’re the ones who protect their capital, accept being wrong quickly, and allow their winning trades to outweigh their losing ones.

Losing more than $135,000 wasn’t the end of my story.

It became the tuition I paid to finally understand what successful trading really requires.

Today, my goal isn’t to help people find the next hot stock.

It’s to help traders develop the discipline, patience, and technical skills that I wish someone had taught me before I ever placed my first trade.
