This particular scene happens about 70% of the way into book, when the issues one might imagine could crop up in a Grim Reaper-human relationship start to rear their head. When I explained to Flora what I wanted, she ran with it —and created this absolute masterpiece. The yearning, y’all!!!

Saturday, August 29, marked the third anniversary of MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE coming into the world. And, incredibly, the third anniversary of me becoming a published author.

Frederick, Cassie, and their book that changed my life is currently in its 9th printing. For those of you who have been with me since the beginning (or even BEFORE the beginning), I cannot thank you enough. (And for those of you who miss Frederick and Cassie as much as I do, I hope very much that I will have more of their story to share with you one day soon.

Okay, I need to get back to packing for DragonCon. My cosplay is going to be… a little embarassing in that it will likely be echoed by 50% of the people at the con. (One hint: heart boxers. IYKYK). Before I go, my parting question for you is: do you cosplay? And if so, what’s your go-to?

Like, a LOT a lot.

Before I get to that, I should probably disclose that I’m writing this newsletter at an elevation of roughly 35,000 feet, somewhere between Denver and Nashville. I’m on my way back home from the first leg of the Jenna is going to be traveling A LOT for book stuff phase of 2026. I spent the past few days in Bozeman, Montana, visiting with some of my oldest writing friends and critique partners and attending the first ever BZN Book Con, hosted by Exes&Oh’s Books. Exes&Oh’s is a brand new romance bookstore with a wild, diverse selection of books to choose from.

In an era where it seems like we’re hearing about one disaster book event after another, BZN Book Con was a shining example of what events can be when they’re done right. Everything about the event went off without a hitch. I got to meet so many readers—some of whom were new to my books, others have been with me since Frederick conjured his first kumquats. These booksellers really know how to put on a party.

If you are a romance reader (or author!) and live anywhere near Bozeman, I highly recommend both this event and this bookstore for all your romance needs! New Book Announcement!

The other massive news I have to share with you: My publisher has just announced the book I’ve been working on not-so-secretly and nonstop the past few months!

This one’s for all the girlies who have ever thought to themselves, “I bet meeting my romantasy book boyfriend and kissing him right on the mouth would fix me.” What could possibly go wrong?? For the first time ever, I will be publishing a book in which NONE of the main characters are dead, undead, or, you know — Death itself. Trying new things is hard at my age so I honestly think my growth here is a thing to be celebrated. This book is without question the most ambitious one I’ve ever attempted, and I’m so honored and excited that my publisher has enough faith in my idea to let me run with it.

Unfortunately, there’s going to be a bit of a gap between LOVE YOU TO DEATH’s publication and BOOK BOOK ACCIDENTAL MAIN CHARACTER. I’m still writing this one, and it likely won’t be in stores until sometime in the first half of 2028. That said, I plan to share lots of tidbits about this book as I work on it, (and I definitely have some surprises up my sleeve for 2027) so if seeing sneak peaks is the kind of thing you’re into, you are in luck. <3

I’m writing this from deep within my air conditioned home, where I shall endeavor to stay for the rest of my life because Tennessee summers hate me.

When my family and I moved here from the midwest six years ago (at the beginning of the pandemic, lol; moving at that time was a terrible idea, and if you didn’t do that you are smarter than we were) we knew summers here would be hot. But six years later we, and our midwestern sensibilities, are still struggling to acclimate.

For those who know me well, you know I also don’t like harsh winters.

The reality is I want it to be 72 degrees and partly cloud year-round. I see no problem with this.

EVENTS

I’ll admit that I am more than a little nervous about how much travel I have for the rest of 2026.

I will be visiting… well, let’s just say a lot of places. Both for book-related travel and for family travel (my daughter is applying to college this fall! we are checking out college campuses! So exciting, but also I’m like 99% sure she was in preschool just a couple years ago??)

All of it is good! I love traveling! Doing events is truly one of the best part of this career! Meeting readers in person, chatting with other authors — it makes the hard parts of this industry so much sweeter. BUT — I also don’t have the same energy level I once did. (Ohhh, aging, you stupid bitch.) And despite loving meeting new people, I’m also terribly awkward and self-conscious. (I usually mask this by entering stand-up comedian mode in front of a crowd—so you’ll never know.)

TOP-SECRET NEW PROJECT

So it turns out I’ve been keeping a secret. Several secrets, actually.

I have more books on contract after LOVE YOU TO DEATH comes out on October 13.

I’ve been working on the first of them all summer and having the time of my life.

These new books have not yet been announced yet —but they will be, and soon.

Very, very soon.

I am very, very excited about this.

Because I have poor self-control, I’m treating you to three hints about what book 5 will be about. Though honestly—in giving you these treats, I’m treating myself. Keeping secrets about exciting things on the horizon is one of the hardest things about being an author, and I’ve been sitting on my hands, biting my tongue, etc. etc. etc. to keep myself from blabbing it all out on social media and in my newsletter.

Here are the hints:

1. I’ve been calling this new novel BOOK BOOK when talking about it with the tiny handful of people I’ve confided in.

2. It’s a departure, genre-wise, from anything I’ve published before.

3. Here is an excerpt, courtesy of the terrible voice recognition software I use to dictate:

“Well, shit.” To the extent any books can help me untangle hooks on magic will almost certainly be more helI walk to the edge of a

As I write this, I am recovering from the whirlwind of travel that was my June. I’m an odd one in that I crave both travel and keeping my ass at home pretty much in equal measure. June definitely featured lots of travel… so to keep things balanced, my July will have me staying entirely at home and working hard on projects I’m not allowed to announce yet (though I really want to!).

For those who are interested in where I went in June, I spent the first week in Washington state for a Levine-family get-together in a big house on a lake.

While there, I met my soulmate: a grumpy old troll who lives under a bridge.

And on my last day in Washington, I got to meet up with some of my favorite authors!

Then, after less than two weeks at home, I brought my daughter to a summer program in a city two hours away from us by plane, where she will be living in dorms and cosplaying as an actual college student for six weeks. And after that, I flew to Edinburgh to meet up with my hubby for an early 25th anniversary vacation. We got to experience the joy of being in Scotland while their beloved football team was (briefly, alas) in the World Cup. I saw pretty islands, pretty lochs, and —best of all— got to meet some “Highland Coos.”

Anyway, you probably didn’t open this email to read about my June travels (though if you want to know more, I have an entire phone’s worth of pictures so let me know!). For those who are unfamiliar with NetGalley, it’s a site where readers can request and download books before publication in exchange for an honest review. NetGalley books are “uncorrected proofs,” meaning they haven’t gone through their very final edit yet. So the version of LOVE YOU TO DEATH you’ll get on NetGalley miiiiight have a few typos and and misplaced words. I’m working on cleaning those up as we speak, so the final version in stores on October 13 won’t have any of those mistakes. <3

Life News

I don’t usually get too personal with these newsletters. I am an awkward turtle who never thinks her life is all that interesting, and I am always concerned I will irritate people if I overshare.

But I’m gonna make an exception here because this is really big news, and it’s only happening because of all of you. So it’s kind of a “thank you for being here and supporting me” more than a “Jenna overshares about her life,” I think.

After years of trying (and, tbh, mostly failing) to successfully balance being an author, having a demanding day job, and maintaining a semblance of a healthy life, I am in the process of winding one of those three things down. Not the healthy life thing (in fact, I hope to only increase my access to that now!) or the author thing (I actually have MORE exciting news on that front I’ll hopefully get to share soon).

But the full-time demanding day job thing? Yeah. That’s the one.

A celebrity I make fun of in my head every time I hear about her once described her divorce as a “conscious uncoupling.” While I still make fun of that figure of speech in my head, literally all the time, I actually feel it pretty accurately describes what is happening with me and my day job. I am on leave from my day job for the rest of 2026, and by this time next year…. I will be an entirely free Jeeno. Free to focus entirely on my health, my life, my family, and my books. In short, all the stuff that actually truly matters. I am terrified (anyone who knows me knows that I am the most risk averse person alive, and that taking the plunge into being a full time author is like, one of the riskiest things you can do that doesn’t involve a skateboard). But sometimes, the things most worth doing are the scariest.

To all of you who have supported me, cheered me on, read my books, and in general been here with me every step of the way, I literally could not be doing this without you. I owe this next, hopefully greatest chapter of my life entirely to you <3

This morning I’m waking up in my home in middle Tennessee, suuuuper ready to move on from 2025 (despite the year having some really wonderful moments) and ready to face 2026. I have a giant mug of coffee in my hands and edits on my fourth book on my laptop (much more on that below 🌺).

I tend to get very stuck in my head when I’m in editing mode and so I know it’s been a minute since I’ve said hello. I have a few updates to share, an apology or two, a full-throated recommendation, and some pics from a really fabulous Parisian vacation I took on a whim with friends.

So, without further ado:

In December, I visited Paris for the first time with my close friends Thea Guanzon, Katie Shepard, and Elizabeth Davis.

I’d never been to Paris before and haven’t really done a lot of European travel in general. But this was truly a trip of a lifetime and sharing it with good friends made it even better.

Book News

Other than a quick jaunt to Paris and becoming unexpectedly hyperfixated on a TV show I never saw coming (more on that below!) all I have really been doing since ROAD TRIP WITH A VAMPIRE came out in September is write and edit my fourth book. As I’ve mentioned in the past, this book is a romance between Daniel, a jaded grim reaper who’s tired of his job, and Lucy, the ray of sunshine human soul he’s assigned to collect who isn’t quite ready to go with him just yet.

I am so in love with this book, and with Daniel and Lucy. And now we have a pub date!

This book is a bit of a departure for me in that there are no vampires (!!) And the humor is much darker than it is in the MY VAMPIRES series But It’s still funny as hell (In my opinion). And the romance, I think, is possibly the best one written. I can’t wait to be able to finally share it with you.

I will be partnering again with Parnassus Books here in Nashville for anybody who would like a signed and personalized copy as well as a secret-for-now pre-order gift. Recommendation

Most of you who are in online bookish spaces are already well aware of the phenomenon that Heated Rivalry has become. I usually try and shut out all forms of media when I’m in edit mode, but friends— when I tell you that this show (and the wonderful books they are based on!) have utterly consumed my brain since I saw the first episode three weeks ago, please believe me. I can’t remember the last time a love story has captivated me so much. Ilya and Shane, you will always be famous.

If you haven’t seen this show about queer professional hockey players and their 🔥🔥🔥 love story yet, run don’t walk to HBOMax, make sure nobody under the age of 18 is within viewing distance (no seriously), and Get ready to bask in some of the best romantic storytelling I’ve ever seen.

Current Emotional State

Today, friends, I am emotional.

Nearly four years ago, I received what felt like an opportunity of a lifetime to publish a novel with Berkley Romance, my current publisher. Until that point I was squarely focused on a very, very different career path. While writing had been a passionate love of mine for many years, publishing actual novels had long been relegated to “bucket list” status for me.

Fast forward to now and I have published three books with Berkley, with a fourth coming in 2026. My debut, MY ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE, is and/or soon will be available in over a dozen countries and in ten languages. My books have sold more than 200,000 copies worldwide and counting. Most importantly: I have met, hugged, and laughed with readers from all over the United States and Europe. I have met people who I know will be friends for a lifetime.

(And of course, it goes without saying that I am now officially the coolest person to ever work at my day job. If you know what my day job is I know you agree with me on this. ;))

Now that ROAD TRIP WITH A VAMPIRE is finally in readers’ hands and my first traditionally-published series has come to a close, I am just so damn grateful for this opportunity to write stories for you. If you have been with me since before I was a traditionally published author (*coughcough IYKYK*), if you’ve only just discovered my writing this week— or, hell, even if you just somehow stumbled upon this newsletter by accident and now regret opening this email—thank you from the bottom of my heart. <3.

• Wednesday, September 24: I will be at Fable Hollow Book Shoppe in Knoxville with Hannah Whitten! This event is sold out — HOWEVER! I will be signing extra stock at both Fable Hollow and Good Girls Books in Knoxville. Basically, if you live in East Tennessee and want a signed copy of any of my books I’ve got you covered.

• Friday, September 26: I will be at A Novel Romance in Louisville with Sarah Hawley, who is both my partner in crime and the cheese to macaroni. I think she plans to mostly troll me during this conversation? Not sure, but what I AM sure about is it will be a rollicking good time (with wine!)

• Saturday, October 18: I will be a panelist at the Southern Festival of Books here in Nashville! (This is also the day before a major milestone birthday of mine — you should see me in a tiara ;))

• Sunday, October 26: I’ll be at Wild Geese Bookshop in Franklin, IN, with the incredible Alexandria Bellefleur and Mallory Marlow as part of a paranormal romance panel!

As I prepare to launch ROAD TRIP WITH A VAMPIRE into the world and bring the MY VAMPIRES series to a close, I have been hard at work on my fourth book, tentatively called LOVE YOU TO DEATH.

My name is Moonpie.

Those of you who follow my person on social media may have heard of me already. In case I am news to you, however, here is me in a nutshell:

I’m fifteen years old.

A five year cancer surviver.

And spry as hell.

Despite my fabulousness, I’ll admit I have had happier days.

You see, my human is simultaneously “under deadline for her fourth book,” “about to launch her third book,” as well as “really really busy with day job.” To be clear, I don’t know what these words mean. Because I am a cat. All I know is that instead of playing with ME, and petting ME, and spending time with ME, she been hiding in a room with the door closed for days. Not even Lucie, the annoying “other cat who lives with us,” is allowed in.

As a favor to her (and with the hopes it will result in her finally having a few minutes to spare for what’s really important (specifically: buying me treats)) I’m taking over her newsletter for a while.

Honestly? I couldn’t be more excited about this change. Everyone who’s excited about the last book in the MY VAMPIRES series can now read it almost a full month early—and right smack in the middle of spooky season.

What hasn’t changed:

Unfortunately, this date change has happened relatively last minute (at least for traditional publishing and bookstore events), so we’re at square one again with setting things up. I do know my tour will be smaller and more local to me this time around, for both personal and professional reasons. But as soon as I know where I’ll be and when I will let you know.

And now for something completely different…

Every author has projects they like writing, projects that are a struggle, and projects that are just an absolute joy to write from the time they open their computers in the morning (or whenever) until the time they shut it again (in the evening, or whenever). Now that I am drafting my fourth book, I can honestly say I have now experienced each of these versions of “being a writer.”

And while I know I just sent out a newsletter not that long ago, I couldn’t stop myself from sending another one once the title of my fourth book — a book that fits squarely in the “omg this is such a goddamn delight to write I can’t stand it” category— was finalized. Please forgive me for the mailbox spam but when I am this excited it’s hard to get me to stop talking.

Without further ado, I give you the title of Daniel and Laren’s story:

(Other titles considered [by me and my tipsy friends], but which were eliminated pretty early on [again by me and my tipsy friends] included MY ROOMMATE IS A GRIM REAPER; REAPED AND RAVISHED; and MY GRIM REAPER IS NOT A VAMPIRE. Idk, I kinda like that last one, not sure why it was struck down.)

What is this book about?

Good question! As you can see by the approximate pub date at the bottom of that graphic, there’s a (very, very) long time to go before things like book covers and order links go live. So I can’t go into too much detail yet on what this book is about. In general terms though — and as you might have already guessed by the little Reaper in the corner of that graphic, and from my complete lack of chill about this book in all my AMAs— this book follows the romantic misadventures of a woman whose soul is the last one a very jaded grim reaper has to collect that week.

I have been falling in love with these star-crossed characters while I write about them falling for each other and even though it’s gonna be a good long while before readers can have this book in their hands, I couldn’t be more excited for the day when that happens.

Writing News

As I write this newsletter, I have been very hard at work drafting my fourth book (tentative pub date: Fall, 2026), which features a love interest who is NOT a vampire (!!!!!) but who is also NOT exactly alive (!!!!!!???). It’s still very early days but right now it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever written. Of course, once I get more in the weeds and into the nitty gritty of editing I may feel differently about it (editing is real rough, y’all). But for now I’m enjoying not having a tight deadline yet and just having fun with these new characters.

It’s been a minute since I’ve had a newsletter, and I hope you’ve all been doing well.

Things here have been on balance fine, though it’s been a rougher time for me than usual recently. Both for personal reasons (we just had to put one of our beloved cats down after a brief but very aggressive illness) and professional (it’s a hell of a time to be working in law in the United States). On the upside, though, writing has been one of the best escapes I’ve ever had, and being able to hide away in the silly little worlds I’ve created has been such a comfort lately.

Writing News

As I write this newsletter and begin to gear up for promoting ROAD TRIP, I have been very hard at work drafting my fourth book. It’s an idea I have been SUPER excited about for years now, and so far it is shaping up to be my favorite thing I’ve ever written. (Hint #1: it’s not about a vampire. Hint #2: Not to get too far afield from my brand, the male love interest isn’t exactly alive.) I’ve teased about this book a lot on my Instagram, and once I get the go ahead I plan to be extremely unrelentingly annoying about how much I will talk about this book so be forewarned ;)

As of right now the tentative pub date for this not-so-secret project is Fall, 2026. Stay tuned. ;)

The gorgeous cover for my third book, ROAD TRIP WITH A VAMPIRE, will be officially shared throughout social media on January 22, not only on my accounts but also on the accounts of a number of lovely bookstagrammers and friends who have agreed to help (y’all know who you are). But given… well… everything (*gestures vaguely to the entire damn world and also to my immediate surroundings*), I wanted to thank those of you who have supported me and my books by giving you a peak at ROAD TRIP WITH A VAMPIRE’s amazing cover before anyone else.

My cover artist Roxie Vizcarra has once again hit it out of the park, capturing the whimsy of the final book in the MY VAMPIRE Series better than I could have ever dreamed. (For those who don’t know me, I have basically no aesthetic or visualization skills. Roxie, and Berkley’s incredible art department, have created all of my masterpiece book covers with nearly zero help from me).

I’ve had this gorgeousness in my inbox since before the holidays and when I tell you my hands have nearly slipped and plastered the cover everywhere at least 23523 times please believe me it’s only a slight exaggeration.

A vampire who can’t remember his past and a witch with secrets of her own hit the road in this zany, cross-country romantic comedy from beloved author Jenna Levine.

Reformed bad witch Grizelda “Zelda” Watson had hoped to never see another vampire again when she slipped away to sunny California for a fresh start. She'd grown tired of them and their nonsense ages ago. I will be featuring a different author each time by asking them which fictional vampires they would F, M, or K. This feature will be every bit as serious as it sounds (in other words, not very), and I would love to hear which authors you would like to see featured here in this very serious way. (With the caveat that I, uh…. don’t know everyone who writes books, not even close ;)).

BOOK THREE NEWS!!!

I have spent the past few weeks feverishly editing Book 3 in the My Vampires series, whose title I recently announced on my Instagram with the uber fancy graphics my followers have come to expect:

ROAD TRIP WITH A VAMPIRE will be the final book in this series, and is another book where the title functions as a summary hehehehe ;). But to give you more of a hint as to what it’s about, it follows the adventures (and misadventures) of a very naughty witch who we were introduced to briefly in MY VAMPIRE PLUS-ONE as a close former friend of Reginald’s. I’ve had so much fun writing this book and cannot wait to share more about it with you! Pre-order links, cover reveals, and all that other good stuff will go live in January, 2025, so stay tuned. :)
