We were talking about how college is so social and I asked him if I could give him some auntie/tia-type advice.

“You’ll meet your people, it’s been like a week…”

“3 weeks.”

“That’s truly nothing man. Also don’t think that it’s all up to you to find your people, focus on the vibe you’re dropping too – if you’re in full alignment with you – that will call in the right people.”

The vibe you’re dropping…

The guy at my beyond-standard late night corner store has shifted from playing bad pop on the speakers to opera.

I’m surprised how much I like it. Opera really works when you’re picking out which peaches you’re going to buy, searching for the right jar of pesto.

The highly-specialized barista who has turned coffee into an art form and who runs my favorite cafe steps out from behind the bar to give me a big hug each time I come in there. He does this for all his regulars.

It’s a great way to start a Monday.

… You know – I recently discovered a playlist called “Chessy’s denim shirt in the Parent Trap.”

Also a swimming club where people who swim laps at a pool together also go for extended day trips along the coast here, which includes hiking from town to town, swimming from cove to cove, barbecuing at the end.

Is it “the vibe” that’s being dropped by all these people, or is it just deliberately choosing to have more fun with what they’re doing?

To be more tapped in, playful, more themselves, more…

Experiential.

If you ask me who I want to spend a weekend with it’s the person with the loco look in their eyes who pulls out a map and draws out a complicated route between obscure countryside villages where your mission together, if you choose to accept it, is to acquire a random souvenir from each.

The person who names their playlists things like “Running through the airport for a last minute love confession” (God I love the internet.)

My buddy who just hiked Kilimanjaro.

A waiter who gets away with calling everyone “babieeeeesssszzzzzz” and it works for them.

The invite I’m responding to is one where we’re going to “Work from Beach” on Friday.

The colleagues and collaborators I’m working with are the ones who genuinely nerd out about the briefs they’re sending. Who take the last 5 minutes at the end of the call to… vibe.

Maybe making things Experiential is having an extra “commitment” to the “vibe?”

My industry is about vibes.

Creating vibes. Dropping vibes.

A vibe is a consequence of personality and thoughtfulness.

oooh I like that - yes -

What the vibe does to you, which parts of you that a specific vibe inspires you to lean into, what happens to you and the people when you do.

On a call the other day I said “developers build destinations, we design the reason people fall in love with them.”

Companies don’t want to be brands anymore, they want to be emotionally resonant and commercially memorable – just like the rest of us.

To be especially distinctive and real in a world that also has AI and bots.

Who doesn’t want that?

When things, words, ideas become cheap, the value of the human experience goes up.

All that’s left is what someone, some place, some group, makes you feel.

Our thesis with AMARIMA is that real feeling - those desired feelings - are studied, designed, created, orchestrated.

Dots connected, vibes achieved. ✌️

P.S. What’s next: Luxury broke itself.

“Companies are doing status quo plus maybe 10% of something new. AMARIMA is operating at the frontier.” This dear friend then continued to detail that we’re made for that 10% of something new.

The word “frontier” has come up in three separate conversations in the last 36 hours. I wish I was exaggerating.

“Jenna this is frontierism, you’re hacking the field, it’s gonna take a bit for them to catch up.”

It’s weird hearing the same odd word repeatedly. It’s like the universe playing a joke on you.

Even my neighbor who I grabbed coffee with this morning started uploading images of my sculptures to AI, showing me renders, and talking about the same concept, but this time about AMARIMA being at the frontier of art in hotels.

Though it was a ChatGPT job in 2 seconds, the renders looked really good. And yes - I was oddly comforted by his AI rendering the woman walking on water.

Did you all listen to the same podcast or something?

I keep trying to understand and wrap my head around what this means, this “frontier.”

Is it a good thing, I wonder?

If I was at a panel in front of a bunch of sharks, they’d tell me to not be at the frontier at all. To instead start a business taking photos of food for menus, or being the middle man for an absurdly specific product like CBD-infused massage oil, to invest in a laundromat empire, or something.

Instead, in meetings with Vitor and Jon here at AMARIMA, I’ve mentioned this “frontier” phenomenon, showed them my neighbor’s ChatGPT renders. We smile, keep chatting, keep going.

Having incredible collaborators who are all in with you on your “frontier” business helps you feel better about the imagined sharks.

Our clients get it, too.

We have multiple incredible people at some of the best brands in the world who are desperately trying to get us through rounds of approvals, budget holds. Someone’s boss’s boss.

You know, I have half a mind to just offer up AMARIMA as the experiential R&D lab of a major hotel brand.

To be the kooky ones with the mysterious rep internally where no one knows what the F they do but they see revenue tripling, wacky cool new things are happening, and they’re like “how do I get on that team?”

Speaking of, we continue to have a funny pattern happening where a lot of the people we’re pitching end up instead pitching us to work for us instead.

It happened again in my last meeting just now.

I have half a mind to just announce that we’re taking investment in the first location of AMARIMA. To do napkin math like the rest of the real estate people, give penthouse apartments to the first 3 investors, and use that first round to hire all these awesome colleagues of ours who want to be at the frontier with us.

I promise we won’t do shark tank, if you promise to help us find the people who want to camp out with us at the frontier.

Maybe we’ll set a fire, roast some marshmallows.
Get a friend to DJ or bring their instrument.
Look at the stars.
Set up a lot of cool tents.

Like a 15-20 min podcast of their own that you never subscribed to?

How about a dinner that you can’t get out of. A performance or show that’s truly grating. A date where you keep secretly checking the time on your phone.

With my experience design / hospitality / research friends we talk about something quite often that I know that not enough people consider which is:

Captivity, in experiences.

If you hold someone hostage for a period of time in the service of your experience (or in service of hanging out with you), it better be a short enough period of time, there better be variability within how that time is spent, they better feel like they have a role/say in how it’s all going.

These factors make it worth it. Some other rules for you:

Most meetings shouldn’t be longer than 30 minutes, and if you schedule a ton you’re encouraged to take at least a few 10 minute breaks.

As you can guess, this doesn’t just apply to work meetings.

In experiential design, we often design for very small amounts of time, and captive experiences are usually less than 45 minutes max.

In our work we describe experiences with language like “Acts” or “Movements” and intentionally structure in free time and down time where people can get back to their own lives, thoughts - take in some fresh air. Be free.

We also vary how much happens within a specific short block of time because the more variability you pack into a period of time, the longer that period of time feels (novelty and time perception).

This means that if you spend an evening out with someone - it’s best to actually go to 2-3 different places throughout that evening. Don't just do dinner: do drinks/apps somewhere and then dinner somewhere else.

Now you know why you’re always going to at least two different places with me. Why I often cut hangs short to walk together somewhere / walk home to introduce a new location.

You also have to factor in, among many other variables, the peak-end rule - people judge an experience almost entirely by the most intense point (the peak) and how it all ended.

This is why we often try to end our coffee club hangs sitting in the grass together in the middle of a beautiful park.

When I was in a perfume class a few years ago I remember that each of us around the table were talking about why we wear perfume, and one person responded:

“to curate another person’s experience of me.”

Consider captivity in how people experience you, your brand.

Do people have enough time to breathe? Digest what was discussed?

Share? Work with the material? Contribute their own ideas?

Co-create? A recent study we worked on with some of our AMARIMA partners found that people rate experiences more highly the more participatory they are.

For those that are looking for more background: the logo is inspired by ink as it dries on paper, and waves from the sea. The format here is showing you my process, because for me as an artist working on these pieces is what’s most fun, in addition to the final and polished ceramic, resin, bronze forms that feel complete and that… say the whole sentence. Some of these are pre fire, others are post. I chose “Jenna Mari” to be my brand because, apart from being my first and middle name, I use this name often here in Barcelona. My practice is translating the depth with which I feel everything into new emergent forms that are reminiscent of ancient ones: coral, bone, fractals. I improvise all my pieces in the moment and in response to the material in front of me, with very little preplanning save for the material choice and final size. This improvisation is a trance-like state where I attempt to freeze a feeling that is mine, or one entrusted to me by the person commissioning the work, into a form that reads as if it were once alive, or that perhaps it’s still breathing, blooming, becoming.

+ Feelings frozen into bronze and ceramic forms that are reminiscent of coral and bone I had a meeting with a guy a year ago who was imploring me to not go public with my sculpture work and to instead do it under an artist name because “people won’t pay you as an artist when they know that you do different things.” What’s funny is that now AMARIMA is representing me, I’m collaborating with friends, I’m working on private commissions and galleries are sharing my work, and I’m about to launch a separate artist site. I’ve found that being an artist too only validates my experiential work - how could I help people to feel inspired in cool places if I wasn’t inspired myself? How could I bring more creativity to the world if I didn’t fully own my own?

I get why this guy told me this. For the past decade so much of business has been about specialization. But now with AI we are seeing the power of being at the edge of a lot of different disciplines, the power of being human and connecting the dots. This is literally one of the principles AMARIMA is founded on. It’s also a strategy that I’ve been running for quite some time. At the height of some of my most serious, suited-up communications work I wrote a book of poetry.

I don’t care that it involves a bit more explanation before someone chooses which way they want to connect with me.

So, to recap I am:

• The Founder of AMARIMA. Alongside our client work with companies and individuals, together with our friends we produce some awesome community-driven and experiential initiatives like Coffee Club Barcelona and The Human Board. Let’s do great work together.

I know so many of you personally - this is very much my inner circle here - but there are also so many new people here who I don’t know yet who get these personal notes from me. It helps me to know why you’re here, what you want from me, and get into dialogues together about the things I write.

You know, every time that I get positive feedback from you I save it in a folder on my email called “Love.” I read through this when being an entrepreneur gets tough, when I doubt myself. So many of the best replies have come from these notes, and from you all, and I want to thank you for that.

We are all the compilation of all the people we have ever known and I’m me because of you.

She writes handwritten notes. Collects seashells and stones.

She listens to music, constantly - big over-the-ear headphones, playlists with poetic titles.

She’s incredibly observant. Kind. Empathic.

She is the best friend that you could possibly ever have.

She feels everything - everyone - deeply. She keeps a note on her phone with snippets of conversations she hears.

Come to think of it - she remembers just about everything that she hears.

The silent one in me is the artist. She paints, she writes, but the thing that she loves to do most is sculpt.

Art is a kind of language that doesn’t use words, right?

Well, there’s a language in form.

I feel things. Textures, rooms. Energy.

I also see what something wants to become. This influences my strategist side too - I bring it to life.

You might call it “achieving clarity,” I call it listening to it, feeling it, and then bringing it into existence.

It starts with a clean table, a brick of clay, a wire, a pen knife, a bowl of water, a turntable, a good playlist or at the least a song.

If you feel me, then I’ll tell you that it really starts with a feeling.

I press those feelings into the clay, first. Palm wide on the full block of clay. Meditating on it.

I begin to freeze them, those feelings, into the clay, into time.

I have no plan. I feel it, all.

Pressing, carving, pulling, burrowing, unfurling, washing.

I lose myself entirely. It’s one of those blissful moments where I don’t think anymore.

I get so… present.

Listening to my music, shifting my weight into a certain section, breathing life into mud.

Saying all I want to say, without any words at all. Moving with something so pliable that it becomes those feelings, somehow. It imprints them. Blooms them.

It’s like continually shifting into that dream state, but you’re very much awake.

You’re silent, but you’re speaking.

What’s crazy is when people start hearing what you’re saying, in that form.

In sharing my pieces, I started to notice what people picked up on, and some people could really hear them.

Saw themselves, in them.

They asked questions that showed that they were listening to what the form said.

“It’s somehow alive.”

“… a safe place, right?”

“I can almost hear it.”

“It’s… something new emerging.”

Yes.

Can you have an artifact from the future?

A relic from something that is still becoming, inside of you?

Also - I have to say that I admire Jon because he’s an amazing father of four, he’s built an incredible creative business, and really has his head on straight. He is exactly who you want as a business partner, especially as a creative one. I feel really seen by him, and safe to share my work with him and do FORMS together.

I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while but it’s a bit… hard to articulate.

I’ll do my best for you.

But just know that while I’m typing, this image keeps coming to mind.

This darkness pops up in meetings, in the people I work with.

My friends.

You can’t go too far into the positive side without experiencing its opposite.

I can design for joy, rest, quality time. But the people that need these things the most are the ones who don’t have it.

When I build ‘community,’ I meet so many people’s loneliness head on.

Camaraderie, as I always say, is the new luxury.

Hospitality is nothing without warmth. Resonance can’t happen without a bit of vulnerability.

Transformation is often sparked by unexpected, unplanned moments. And a lot of people in today’s world don’t have the tools or bandwidth to receive those.

I’m in meetings about how to reimagine hotel lobbies, why experiences aren’t diner menu items, how to ground experiential creativity in theory, tested research and insight.

Trust the process, I say. Value the creative side as much as the business side.

I cannot design any of these ways of experiencing without intimately knowing their opposite.

I can’t imagine the world’s best hotel without thinking of an fluorescent hallway on floor six, or an entirely empty lobby with a horrible smooth jazz soundtrack.

It’s not just both sides of the coin,

It’s the entire object, spinning. All edges, grooves.

Faces.

Shadows.

It’s a bit overwhelming, this darkness.

It even shows up in some of the best feedback I’ve ever gotten, as the specter of what I’m contending with:

”And when I started going… I could actually believe on that different perspective and that I can handle dark moments. Hearing about people’s stories made me connect with them but also with myself more and more. And today I had the feeling of being interested and curious about where life is going to take me, and it might sound small but it’s a huge thing for me. I don’t think I ever felt this way.”

There is no message that I can ever text back to something like this that will adequately speak to this person’s experience or provide further comfort that what we’re all up against is…

not ever going to not be there.

Have you ever stopped to think why I’m specifically good at all of this?

I’ve seen a lot of darkness take over people in my life.

It’s why I show up the way that I do.

Why this is all my calling.

People sense it. It’s why they feel like they can text me like this.

Meta trends - like a lot of people are going on these epic adventures lately, quests.

Moving beyond a beach vacation towards a journey so that they really feel alive.

The constant questions I get about designing for romance, connection. Because who doesn’t want or need more of either?

How sometimes, people don’t even know what they want, or need, anymore.

Or want to. Or have time to.

”I don’t need you to personalize it. Choose it for me, all I want to do is feel it. I need to feel.”

You don’t become excellent at living without experiencing enough people who are explicitly unwilling or unable to…

live well.

Like I’ve said, some of the experts in the things that we all need more of are also in dire need of getting better at those things themselves.

I just finished writing feedback to an expert in communication that they need to be better at communicating.

Lightly suggesting to a friend I know who is a literal expert in fun that they need to build more fun into their own life.

Why is the other side of the coin always there? Sometimes so obviously?

Why can’t we all just stay in the light?

Or do we just have to see the dark side of the moon, too.

Is it a feature in all of this?

Maybe we can’t ever escape it.

Maybe we have to accept the haunting.

I’ve had a week of some strange happenings - my free initiatives that I love so much not feeling worth my effort anymore.

I’ve made hard decisions to stop investing in certain things that I simply can’t invest in anymore.

I’ve had to turn my kitchen table into a detective’s evidence board just to understand what one new project is truly asking of me and my team.

I’ve also heard,

“You have a very specific kind of taste that I want more of in my life, Jenna.”

• 

I keep going, even with the darkness hanging out, over there.

Terrorizing my best people. The next person I’ll meet.

Causing havoc with even the most amazing plans.

It’s a haunting, of sorts.

Inescapable.

All the more reason to first just sit with it.

Draw the lines.

Recognize that it’ll always be there, in a way.

The best people I know in experiences, hospitality, creativity - sit with it.

Pour it a glass of wine.

Take it for a walk.

Unstructured time? Lazy hours in bed?

How about snacking on something delicious? What about your favorite dish?

A really good drive somewhere. Listening to new music that you love.

When I ask you who you want to do all these things with, is it another person? People?

Or just you?

“We’ll take a slow morning. Grab a coffee. Go for a long walk along the water. Maybe check out the market - I know you’ll love the sculptures at the market, Jenna. Then I’ll take you to my favorite place for dinner.”

I spend a lot of time with people who are so obsessive about prioritizing this kind of life.

And it’s also very true that these same people who are so obsessive about these kinds of slow mornings are the same ones that need to be reminded emphatically to take more of them.

Work hard, play hard? They’re my people.

It’s me, too.

I create it for others all the time and I also need to create it more for myself.

Work hard, play hard sure.

But what about just…

…

…how do I describe it?

I go back to the beginning. The feeling of a snow day.

Crisp cold sheets and piles of blankets on top of me in bed.

Everything’s quiet outside, sparkling. No one needed anything from me. I didn’t need anything from anyone but just a few more minutes, warm, curled up and nested like a little animal. Breathing.

This is catnip for my heart -

Likely you have your own version of it -

A slow, chill day that you really need.

A person that you want to spend it with, or a glorious rabbit hole away from the universe into a different headspace and time - alone.

I love the person that I am when I have this kind of time. When I’m without it, my inner monologue whines about wanting more of it, and then my continued inner monologue whines at me about whining about it.

How can I put this… okay, here’s a metaphor:

Given that I’m now accidentally one of Barcelona’s experts on coffee, I’ve realized that I prefer to take mine with cinnamon.

It just feels a bit extra to dash a little on the top. I then have AI tell me all the health benefits of cinnamon.

Too often we treat this “slow mornings” kind of time like it’s cinnamon - a spice.

A nice-to-have extra.

“I want to run my schedule like someone in the army.” I say often.

If I become so regimented with my time, I tell myself, I can free up more blocks of it that no one can fuck with, except me.

It’s good in principle, but then I also think about the other day when I woke up and, upon receiving really cool news about a project that I’m on, decided that I deserved a day off.

I had a friend staying with me at the time so I proclaimed that it was a day off, enjoyed a coffee (with cinnamon), and then sat there and thought to myself:

Okay, now what.

I ended up being productive. I spent the morning filling out a year’s compass for last year. If you don’t know those exercises, they’re really helpful and this one no doubt was.

But my day off was a total fail.

I should have gotten the f out of the house and taken my coffee down at the beach.

I should have sat in that spot that I love on that concrete pillar and watched the waves come back to Barcelona from Mallorca.

Maybe picked up my favorite sandwich from that Italian spot that I always recommend to people who are visiting.

I do this all, often. I live in a city that is built for it. But it’s never enough.

It’s never enough for any of us, because we all need more of it.

There isn’t a single person I know who doesn’t need more of it.

The pillows were this crisp white. The sheets very smooth, like silk. The air was slightly cold and still.

It was early morning on Sunday, still dark out, but a bit of that pre-sunrise glow outside.

I listened to the silence, awake. Curled up in a ball, breathing.

Smiling a bit to myself about all that happened the night before.

It felt like a snow day, again.

What if cinnamon was essential?

What if I should never take my coffee again without it?

What’s your cinnamon?

What if this kind of spaciousness - this emotional time that we’re talking about here - was the essential missing component for so many of us in our lives?

I can and will continue to design incredible experiences for you, your guests, your clients.

They will profoundly change how you’ll see the world - yes.

But they’ll be so much more resonant if you don’t forget your own cinnamon.

Add the cinnamon, before you even find me.

Especially - my dear friends - these days.

Recently in a meeting with one of them we established that I needed to form a specific pitch for a future piece of work and we agreed to the parameters.

As we wrapped up that meeting this client then said to me:

“I just want you to know: I value your friendship more than any of this work.”

This happens to me all the time. It happens to me often enough that I’ve thoroughly parsed it with my closest friends, my therapist. I have an internal protocol for it.

Some version of: “Hey, I’ve been thinking, can we be friends?” Happening before, after, or during my best work.

Even once, after an especially intensive strategy session, another client accidentally blurted out, “Thank you so much for this. I’ve got to run to my next meeting. We’ve got to wrap up. I love you.”

We both paused for a beat and burst out laughing.

“I love you, too.” I said.

“Oh my god,” they laughed. “I mean I do, but not in some romantic or creepy way.”

“I know.”

These moments are honestly the best signals that I get that I’m good at what I do.

That it’s all working.

In hospitality, experiential design, and community architecture, the work is relational at its core.

I operate in intimate territories. It is my job to give camaraderie, to all who enter the space or that experience that I’m designing, professionally.

My work needs to create ease, warmth, trust. I need to understand what someone needs for their best moments, or in *that specific moment,* and build it. Give them that.

It requires an immediate subtle emotional read and proximity.

And before you start thinking it I have to caveat this:

This all is not strategic or manipulative in the way that you might think it would be.

Good vibes only work when they’re real - when they’re coming from someone who genuinely feels them.

There’s a debate going on in my field about what the strongest human emotion is and, contrary to most people thinking it’s love, many believe it’s actually authenticity.

You can’t fake authenticity.

This kind of open friendship vibe is innate - for me and for all the best people I know in experiences and hospitality. If you test people who work in these industries, we’re more likely to be open to experience, open to new people.

And that authenticity also requires me keeping it relentlessly real and sharing my universe when people offer up their own inner worlds too.

To be known, back.

To be so completely embodied and myself.

If I don’t do that, everyone feels it.

If I don’t do that - it all turns into service instead of hospitality.

About 90% of the time - what happens when you’re in the groove - this work is incredible. About 5% it can get a bit awkward because people aren’t used to feeling seen, or being in an environment where a bunch of people feel that way at once (aka a real and functioning community), and they have something going on in their world where it’s difficult for them to process it/be fully present, or they get triggered, or they literally have a conversation - with themselves - in front of you, and you just kind of need to leave them to it. The extra 5% is a total mystery.

When your business is creating belonging, friendship becomes a byproduct. And it’s, again, very real.

I’m genuinely friends with so many people I meet during work.

You can be an awesome friend to all, a good friend to a group, and a close friend to a chosen few.

I believe that we all were built for this.

Having a bunch of people who know you - loose but strong connections that you can count on, weekly.

It’s the whole premise of my Coffee Club Barcelona - which is so big now that we’re taking over my favorite cafe Friday morning.

On a work level Coffee Club is an experiential design testing lab where I explore the conditions necessary for genuine connection.

I’ve also met some absolutely awesome good friends of mine through it.

Both things can be true at once.

You can have emotional fluency in business and outside of it.

I’d argue that it’s required.

The skill is in understanding resonance well enough to design environments where others feel profoundly connected.

If I were some kind of superhero I would want to speak every language, and have infinite time.

I want to create the conditions where as many people as possible feel immensely comfortable, inspired, at home or blown away, and fully themselves.

This especially includes my own team.

I’m so committed to this because I know that I have finite time - I cannot be a close* friend to everyone - so if I create a space where this happens and people build relationships with each other - I’ve done my part.

That’s designing for resonance.

My company name - AMARIMA - comes from my full name Jenna Mari Matecki - but it also comes from AMAR RIMA from Spanish (with linguistic roots in Latin and Greek).

It’s a poetic play on words and meaning:

To love / rhyme

I’ve never been so convinced of this fact.

We are deeply social, tactile, warm creatures.

When I say this I don’t mean that we need to live in an introvert’s worst nightmare. Alone time is important.

But a fundamental human need is a functioning community.

Multiple people who know you on a constant, continual basis. People who are around you enough to notice when something goes wrong, and who have the built intimacy with you and the felt agency to say it.

I am deeply fortunate to have built an incredible community of people in my life.

This was partly out of necessity (living nomadically as I did and abroad from my home country as long as I have, being an entrepreneur since 2015).

It’s also partly out of a calling - you know I’m good at bringing people together. I’ve been doing it as long as I can remember.

I do it professionally.

Therefore I think that I’ve built enough where I can make a strong proclamation like this and you can believe it:

One of the greatest sources of suffering that we will ever encounter is disconnection from each other.

And yet, somehow, so many of us keep *choosing that disconnection. Over and over and over again.

It’s like watching a train crash. Over and over again.

Each time I witness this it makes my heart break, over and over again.

Each time I feel the need - in so many amazing people who are around me - I feel like I’m trying to fix a dam with scotch tape.

Over and over again.

We’re tempted to examine the why, but I’d rather ask instead what we can do.

When a dam broke and you only have scotch tape in your hand - it’s a little late for the why. And there are so many highly qualified expert people at examining that piece. That “why” piece.

So, what can we do about it?

Apart from making my career about building resonant places and moments where this happens, I think you know me well enough now where I can write a list like the one I’m typing out below, and ask you to do it.

1. Message someone you know and express deep gratitude for one of their innate qualities, something they did, something they continue to do. Watch what happens.

2. Call a friend that you want to get to know more, admit that you want to get to know them more, and co-plan a time where you can do this together.

3. Share with someone that you admire why you admire them. It might be uncomfortable at first but you’ve got to power through.

4. Organize a group gathering. A group gathering needs to have at least 6-8 people. Have the stamina to make it happen. Note that it doesn’t have to even be a “party” or a “dinner” - it can literally be you all working on something in the same room together, watching a game. If you wanna be bold, organize a group trip. 2-3 day / weekend outings are the sweet spot.

5. Reward someone else’s existing vulnerability with you by saying “thanks for sharing that with me” If you feel it, also say something like “you can always talk to me about this, this kind of thing/life/this situation can be lonely and you’re not alone.”

6. Encourage someone you love to find a great therapist (they have to be great) to work with, and/or recommend that amazing book that you read that was a good self-guided stand in for the therapist you needed for _______ work that you’ve done.

7. Get over yourself and ask for help with what you need help with from someone who you think may be (keyword, MAY be) able to help you out. Try again with someone new if it falls up short the first time. Take that heavy/confusing/WTF/continual loop thing that you’re dealing with get it out of your own mind.

8. If you feel funky, tell someone that you feel funky. If you can identify why you feel funky or a specific need that you have that they can help with that will help that funky-ness, maybe share that. If it’s better to not talk after you proclaim that you’re feeling funky, say something like “I just wanted to let you know, nothing else required.”

9. Follow up with someone. Check in on them. Even just a “I’m checking in on you” or “I had a note in my calendar that X was happening for you this week, right?” is so, so powerful.

10. Identify someone in your life that you think is similar to you in a specific way and say “hey I think we’re similar in X, Y, Z, am I right?”

And when in doubt with all of this list, exercise curiosity. Turn to a person next to you and inquire about what’s going on with them, ask them a question like “what do you want your day to be about today?” or “what are you looking forward to?”

There’s more but let’s leave it at 10 + a plea for more curiosity.

You have me furiously tap-typing this out because I found myself holding scotch tape in my hands today, again. I love you all too much to not ask you, to not plead with you, to do this list of ten because of this.

I alchemize feelings into action and I need your help with this one.

Do the list of ten, please. Tell me that you did it. Please give me the comfort of knowing that you did these 10 actions. At least 3.

Watch what happens.

I need to know that there’s an antidote to this train crash, over and over again.

Founded Coffee Club Barcelona, biweekly keep-it-real coffee walks with amazing strangers, and grew it to 1,005 people.

This isn’t your usual coffee club.

Coffee Club Barcelona started in March as a way for me to bring together complete strangers in Barcelona to enjoy a coffee, go for a walk together, and talk about something real. It started with six people grabbing a coffee at a coffee stand near my apartment. It was one of my... experiential experiments for AMARIMA.

We now have 1,005 members of Coffee Club. I’ve personally hosted 282 of these people.

The topics each time have all focused on examining empowering... I’d call them “open-ended concepts.” We’ve examined what “fate” is, what “success” looks like, what “power” should mean. We’ve talked about life, death, relationships, wins, WTF-level challenges. Every human experience across the spectrum.

When I meet new people in Barcelona now they have heard of it. I’ve needed to cap the amount of RSVPs because the groups have gotten too large for me to handle solo. I want to keep it intimate.

One of the top review criteria for Coffee Club is that people feel safe. They also said:

“You are a warrior. You are changing people’s lives.”

“I felt very included. By everyone. Was so nice.”

“Everybody was so open and cool.”

The talks I gave centered on AMARIMA, reimagining the hotel experience, the future of hospitality, how AI can enable more humanity, which brands around the world are getting it right, regenerative hospitality, and what sustainability should mean for the sector. My favorites being at The World Experience Organization Experience Week in London where I threw a slide up that said “YOU ARE AN ANIMAL,” and a regenerative hospitality masterclass that I hosted as an experiment last week where we dove into what “sustainability” actually should mean in hospitality and the brands that are actually getting it right.

“Our conversation was genuinely enlightening - you shared perspectives and examples that really opened my eyes and helped me see things in a new way.”

The interviews that I gave were really fun and a chance to articulate the ‘why’ behind what I do.

There’s the product, and then there’s the world the product lives in.

The best hospitality is delivered by what I call professional friends, but what makes you want to spend time with them is the seduction of the world that they create, and wanting your own universe to operate just a bit more like it.

Their lifestyle. Their way of spending their time.

I like spending time with an herbalist because I imagine myself picking herbs, drinking complicated infusions, inhaling green things, feeling amazing.

I like going to a bakery not only to pick up the warm cardamom bun that they made, but also because the place feels and smells like the kitchen that I wish I had.

People work the same way.

You know when you meet someone and you’re blown away by how cool they are? Their universe of choices, the way they spend their time?

My work these days has been about orchestrating these kinds of inspirational worlds.

They start with reflecting the unique way that you see things.

For instance, on a video call with a stressed friend I told him to make himself a hot tea, “a drinkable hug.”

Hospitality done right is just as much about inspiration as it is service.

A kind of magic.

The best experiences give you an inspirational shift, a moment where you break open and see things just a bit differently, and want to take that way of seeing with you.

Where you connect more deeply with yourself and the people and places around you.

When the veil, as another friend recently described it, between you, someone else, and the place you’re in is much, much thinner.

And you feel more.

Life becomes a little brighter. Technicolor.

Where your full attention feels easy to give, where a new world is yours to receive.

It’s all inspiration as much as it is service.

“When I’m with my son and he has a tantrum, the first thing I think of is how he’s doing physically - ‘Are you comfortable? Did you eat? Do you need warmer socks on?’ Yet somehow adults completely forget this when they are taking care of themselves. They’ll be upset and they don’t ask themselves about what’s happening in their bodies, first. Sometimes it really is that simple - you’re exhausted, you need food, water. You’re too hot, cold. You need a bath.”

I found that to be brilliant and it’s been lodged in my mind (or is it somewhere else? my left pinky toe?) ever since.

Now that so many of my friends are professional hosts in some way, shape, or form - I’ve noticed how in tune they are with the frequency of these basic needs of the people around them.

Spending time with these people spoils you rotten.

How magically a plate of tomato slices with fresh sunny olive oil drizzled on top will seemingly appear out of nowhere with a wink. A mug of warm barley tea. A scarf wordlessly wrapped around a friend’s shoulders after a barely perceptible shiver.

It’s a love language - all things somatic.

When you get it right it’s a threshold to comfort, a portal to a deeper level of understanding, a gateway to intimacy. Resonance.

When it’s wrong, you’ve lost someone before you’ve all even started.

Think of conversations you’ve had while swimming. In a sauna. Picking at something incredibly delicious. Wrapped in a blanket. Going on a run together.

You get somewhere further, right?

Even walking and talking there’s something special unlocked.

You arrive in your body, first.

And if you aren’t there, none of what you experience will really hit as strongly as it could.

We are porous, permeable creatures - sensitive bodies of water.

We have physical, somatic needs.

When they’re tended to, the rest of us can arrive.

I’m currently drinking a deep red hibiscus tea, nibbling on the last bits of a crispy, mineral apple, with a hot water bottle on my lap, and my feet up on a padded stool underneath my desk while my sweet black cat lounges in a sunny spot on the floor next to me and yawns when he realizes that I’m giving him attention.

I hear the cars and some motorcycles zoom up the street outside the window, muffled voices of passerby, and the tap tap of these worn-down keys as I press them.

These small comforts of mine all lead to us having this suspended moment now, as you read this in your inbox.

What is deliciously comfortable, for you?

What are the small physical things that, when you tend to them, change the quality, color, light behind everything else you do?

Amazing experiences start there, first.

That’s where you find someone, before they even enter the room.

Mayhem.

Specifically, a joyful, safe mayhem.

A happy, aghast ‘WTF is this?! what’s happening?!’ mayhem.

And surprises.

Happy surprises.

‘I could have never expected that but wow’ moments.

Often before a big insight there’s a period of deep confusion, or a lot of different variables being thrown at you. Overstimulation. Too much at once.

Before an “aha” moment there’s a certain type of chaos.

A primordial ‘ARGHHHHHH!!!!’ kind of grunt.

Think about a group brainstorm where nothing comes, it’s all a mess, everyone’s word vomiting, and then some profound insight is reached.

A comment seemingly from nowhere, but there’s such a prescient and clear wisdom behind it that’s almost eerie. It resonates, it chimes.

A tapas spread of a million little plates on a table with candles thrown in to the mix and flavors that seemingly make no sense together but are f’ing delicious.

During a camping trip, someone you love tapping on your tent with a flashlight in hand and telling you to get out of bed immediately to come watch a meteor shower with them.

An old friend told me something that I always keep close which is that the thing about life is that you always obsess over so many things, but the things that actually happen and move you forward are things you could have never planned or predicted.

And I’d add into that mix that before those things happen there’s always mayhem.

So when designing an experience we need both mayhem and surprises.

For both I look at them like catalysts. You can introduce a game or framework that encourages mayhem. You can unleash surprises at key moments that your guests and friends could have never predicted - announce yourself as an agent of mayhem and start changing up the rules that you yourself introduced just minutes before (highly recommend).

Now, both ‘mayhem’ and ‘surprises’ need multiple witnesses.

They need collaborators, friends.

Mayhem, something so clearly linked to laughs and fun, without others experiencing this mayhem with you, is likely to induce angst and existential dread. Surprises are best when they’re witnessed and experienced by multiple people at once.

Both are gifts for everyone involved, the givers and the receivers.

It’s like watching someone open a gift that you got them that you know they’ll love. The gift is for them, and it’s also for you to experience the joy of giving it, to them. Feeling their happiness.

It’s because of this that I think a lot about group experiences, moments, outings, trips these days. The power of being in the company of multiple awesome people.

And I think about how mayhem and surprises are gateways, catalysts, openings for something new.

And I’m wondering, at the end of my workday this Monday, what would happen if we embraced these misunderstood friends of ours a bit more?

A grey cat was laying in the grass belly up next to me, looking back up at me as I looked down at her. In the distance there was a herd of goats watching our verbena harvest with interest and ear twitches, and down the hill a flock of giant white ducks were quacking loudly.

While I waited for the cuttings, I already had my hands full with a box of six fresh duck eggs with feathers still sticking on them, a book on how to identify Galician seaweed varieties, a manual on herbs titled “The New Era of Herbs” from 1990, and a how-to guide on potpourri that she threw on top of the pile because she thought I might like it. Over my right shoulder I had a canvas bag sagging from the weight of a giant jar of honey from their last bee colony, and three smaller jars of fresh homemade jam and marmalade: strawberry, orange, and bitter orange.

My friend’s mom is that kind of supremely giving person.

Earlier in the afternoon she made us a plate to pick at of a cured cheese that tasted a bit like lavender with the strawberry jam dolloped on it (literally the best jam I’ve ever had - I never knew berries could taste like that) and toasted seed bread. We all had glasses of sparkling Vichy Catalan water next to us like we were in some kind of idyllic commercial for the brand.

But once I had my giant bouquet of verbena - that since has perfumed my fridge like it’s some kind of cold herbal eden with mood lighting - we packed up the car to head back to the city. We were ready to go.

”Oh no, I forgot the other bag for you!” my friend’s mom then said, turning to quickly scramble back towards her stone farmhouse in the distance.

“I don’t think time exists on your farm,” I said to my friend. He nodded.

It took us maybe 90 minutes to leave, as all good places do.

I continue to go full tilt on building AMARIMA. I’ve been busy having discussions for projects that are about to kick off that genuinely are the coolest, most fun, most meaningful briefs I have ever been asked to work on, with people who I want to spend loads of time with. I’ll tell you about these experiences here once they launch and it’s time. It’s momentum and I’m excited.

In my other hours I’m also full tilt on spending quality time with wonderful new friends here in Barcelona.

Apart from the AMARIMA experiences I’ve got a few others... brewing let’s say -

My Barcelona Coffee Club is on summer holidays - it’s glorious how both everything and nothing happens here in Spain in August - but our next meeting is in early September which I’m excited about. We have about 500 people in the group now so it’s really hitting its stride. Just this week one of our club members texted everyone asking who wanted to hang out apart from our events, which made me proud of this idea that I doodled in my notebook last March.

And our global Human Board is humming along. We’ve received a series of new applications for meetings for the fall. I continue to be amazed by how incredible our board members are - it’s been so fun to witness them all become friends with each other, to get random photo texts from them all meeting up in whichever city they happen to be in, arm in arm and smiling. I said pretty much exactly this:

“Do you have a minute to talk about the sensory elements? Awesome. So for lighting, I’m thinking that we have handheld globe lights - warmish yellow soft LED spheres. This way, someone looking out across the garden will see these floating in the night - this effect will be even more magical as the sun goes down and we get the pinks and purples from the sunset interacting with the scene. Then, I think we should each walk around with gold body paint. We can create a ritual around dabbing the guests with it - a thumbprint on a cheek or brow, or they can create their own designs - making it the “cool kid” thing to have at the party, signaling that they need to come to us and experience what we have to offer in order to get it. This gold will also reflect off the lights, and create an atmospheric element that ties the guests into the scene - helping them all get a bit more corporeal with us. Then, I was thinking of creating a few signature scents, based on certain emotions, which guests can choose to spritz themselves with. The only other update I have for you is just a highlight that for the altar for the wishkeeper, I’d like to source natural materials from the location itself - blossoms, tree branches, shells, sand, some salts, so I’ll be taking time to do that the morning of. Oh and do you know if I can fly with incense packed in my bag? Little wisps of smoke at the altar will be gorgeous.”

All of this is sensorial design.

When it’s done well, it can take an already incredible experience and elevate it to an unforgettable visceral moment.

When it’s done poorly, like a plastic LED candle (number one vibe killer - you could never convince me otherwise) it completely ruins the feel and makes a moment feel cheap.

Sensorial design is so much more than perfume, but scent is incredibly evocative and it needs to be designed into what we experience so much more.

Why do you wear a scent? Use a specific shampoo (yes - still a scent)?

It’s part of how you curate the experience of you, for the people around you.

Places also have scents, but not just in the most obvious way that you might be thinking of - at a store or in a hotel lobby.

For instance, at the park around the corner from where I live there’s a wall of jasmine in full bloom.

This was planted intentionally because we all love flowers, and especially the scent of jasmine.

It makes my almost-daily walk through this park a gorgeous experience.

The moment that I breathe in as I round the corner and inhale jasmine.

This smell is the exact same scent as last year at this time, pinning me in late May, early June, in Barcelona, making me think of where I was at last year when I rounded the same corner, what was happening in my life then.

This is sensorial design.

Food, music, textures are all part of this too. Anything that really grounds you in your body.

We are all little animals, body and mind, and we love engaging with our senses.
