Okay, I have a lot to catch you up on!

First—and I still can’t quite believe I get to say this—I won a Scribe Award for Stranger Things: Starcourt Mall Escape!

The Scribe Awards are given by the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers at San Diego Comic-con and recognize excellence in writing for established worlds and franchises. Starcourt Mall Escape won in the Young Adult/Middle Grade category this year. I was lucky enough to be there in person and accept it from my friend Jonathan Maberry.

This one means a lot to me.

I’ve written in some pretty incredible worlds over the years—Disney, Star Wars, Stranger Things—and writing media tie-in books is both incredibly fun and deceptively difficult. You’re playing in a sandbox people already know and love. The characters have to sound like themselves. The world has rules. The fans know when you get something wrong.

But you also have to find the little pocket of story that hasn’t been told yet and make it feel like it was always there.

With Starcourt Mall Escape, I got to spend more time with Eleven and Max during one of my favorite eras of Stranger Things: the summer of 1985, when Starcourt Mall was brand-new and everything still felt colorful and fun before… well, if you’ve watched the show, you know.

I loved getting to explore their friendship and give them an adventure of their own.

So winning a Scribe for that book feels incredibly special. The book also hit the New York Times Bestseller list. It’s been a wonderful ride!

Thank you to everyone who has read it, reviewed it, recommended it, or sent me a photo of their copy. Authors really do see those things.

Meanwhile, I moved to Austin…

In other rather major life news, I recently packed up my life in California and moved to Austin, Texas.

Moving is weird.

You can know intellectually that you live somewhere new, while some part of your brain is still convinced you’re just staying there temporarily. Especially after two decades in SoCal. You have to build all the tiny things that make a place feel like home: your coffee place, your grocery store, your routes through town, the places you want to go back to.

I’m still very much in that stage. Exploring, learning, growing!

Austin and I are getting acquainted.

And yes, it is HOT. (I came from the Joshua Tree desert though!)

But I’m starting to really love it here.

One of my favorite Austin experiences so far was going to Flutter Romance Books for Romance Bookstore Day, and I had the best time.

There’s something particularly wonderful about walking into an independent bookstore absolutely packed with people who are excited about books.

Especially romance readers. They know how to show up.

It was also one of those moments where I thought: Okay. I live here now. I can do this.

I’ve spent so much of my career writing alone in a room—which is the glamorous reality of being an author—so finding a new book community in a new city has been really lovely.

And Austin has already started sneaking into my creative brain.

I’m not saying anything more about that yet. 👀

But writers steal from everything.

Even our own lives.

A little behind the scenes from my writing desk…

I’ve been writing a LOT lately.

Some of it I can talk about.

Some of it I very much cannot.

This is an occupational hazard.

But one thing I’ve been thinking about since moving is how quickly a new place starts working its way into your writing.

I don’t necessarily sit down and decide, I’m going to write about this thing I saw today.

It’s sneakier than that.

A neighborhood gets interesting. A weird interaction sticks in my head. I overhear a phrase. I notice the way a city feels at a particular hour. How HOT it is in summer.

Then six months later, some mutated version of it is in a book.

So here’s one tiny craft tip from my current writing life:

Pay attention to what you can’t stop noticing.

Not what you think you’re supposed to write about.

What keeps catching your attention?

What do you keep telling people about?

What’s strange or funny or unsettling enough that your brain keeps circling back to it?

That’s usually where the good stuff is.

And Austin has been giving me quite a bit to notice lately.

My Big Move to Texas Hill Country

On a personal note, I’ve just made the big move from California to Austin, Texas, and I’m settling into my new home. The transition has been full of new adventures (and a few boxes still to unpack!), but I’m already loving the energy here. I’ve been trying all the great new restaurants Austin has to offer—recommendations always welcome!—and yes, I’m definitely leaning on the air conditioner as summer settles in. 😅

If you’re in the Austin area (or nearby), I’d love to connect and make some new friends, especially in the writing community. Whether it’s coffee and craft talk, local literary events, or just saying hi, please reach out. I’m really looking forward to Austin becoming my new creative home.

1. Honor the Source Material: Stay true to the characters’ voices and the world’s established rules to resonate with fans.

2. Find Fresh Angles: Add new stories or perspectives (like Eleven’s summer escape taking place between Seasons 2 and 3) to expand the universe while respecting its core.

3. Collaborate Closely: Work with the IP holders to ensure authenticity and alignment with the franchise’s vision.

4. Balance Canon and Creativity: Weave in familiar details and characters(e.g., Starcourt Mall) while introducing original plot points to keep it engaging.

5. Know Your Audience: Cater to both die-hard fans and new readers by blending nostalgia with accessible storytelling.

6. Deadlines: Be prepared to write on crazy deadlines! Often, this means drafting a whole book in a month or two.

7. Outlines: Get really good at outlining because often you have to go through many approval processes and there isn't a lot of time for revision work. Outlines help everyone sign off and get on the same page before you start drafting.

Author Marketing Tips and How to Prepare for Book Publication

Howdy writers! I’m knee-deep in marketing plans for my TWO books dropping in 2025 (with a possible third still hush-hush). The above image is part of a marketing effort spearheaded by my publisher Podium Entertainment.

Publishing is a wild ride—thrilling, especially for a debut, but downright terrifying. One minute you’re fretting, “What if nobody reads my book?” and the next, “What if EVERYONE reads it—and hates it?!”

Sound familiar? Here’s how I’m tackling marketing and prepping for launch day to turn those fears into triumphs. Us introverts may WISH that hiding in dark rooms and pecking out our tales was enough, but let’s face it: killer marketing is the secret ingredient to a thriving writing career.

As an author, getting your book into readers' hands is as much about strategy as it is about storytelling. Whether you're a debut novelist or a seasoned writer, effective marketing and preparation for publication are key to building your audience and ensuring your book's success. Here are some of my best tips to help you navigate the journey from manuscript to market.

Marketing Tips for Authors

1. Build Your Author Platform Early

Your platform is your online presence and connection with your audience. Start building it before your book launches:

• Create a Website: A simple site with your bio, book details, and a blog can establish credibility. Include a newsletter sign-up form to capture reader emails.

• Leverage Social Media: Focus on platforms where your target audience hangs out. For romance or thriller readers, Instagram, TikTok, and X are great for sharing snippets, behind-the-scenes content, or book aesthetics. Focus on the one or two platforms that you best vibe with for the top engagement.

• Engage Authentically: Share your writing journey, inspirations, or even challenges. Readers love connecting with the person behind the pages.

2. Connect with Your Readers

Building a loyal readership takes effort but pays off:

• Start a Newsletter: Email lists are powerful for direct communication. Offer a free short story or sample chapter to entice sign-ups.

• Join Book Communities: Participate in Goodreads groups, Reddit’s r/books, or BookTok to discuss your genre and subtly promote your work.

• Host Giveaways: Use platforms like Amazon or Goodreads to run giveaways, boosting visibility and excitement. For example, we’re working toward Amazon sales and Goodreads giveaways for my forthcoming titles.

3. Get Strategic with Pre-Orders

Pre-orders can drive early sales and improve your book’s ranking on retailers like Amazon:

• Announce Early: Share pre-order links across your platforms as soon as they’re live. And don’t be afraid to keep plugging (even if you feel annoying). Remind readers that preorders can make or break a title, especially a debut. It can also determine if you get that second or third book in a series.

• Offer Incentives: Exclusive content, like a bonus chapter or signed bookplates, can motivate early purchases. These are known as “reader magnets.”

• Collaborate: Partner with bloggers or influencers in your genre to spread the word.

4. Utilize Reviews and Endorsements

Reviews lend credibility and influence purchasing decisions:

• NetGalley or ARC Programs: Distribute advance reader copies (ARCs) to bloggers, reviewers, and bookstagrammers.

• Ask for Blurbs: Reach out to authors in your genre for endorsements to feature on your cover or product page. This is scary, but still important in today’s publishing landscape. Trust me, I know! I’ve been sending out emails this week! Despite my nerves, every author I contacted has requested the galley.

• Encourage Reader Reviews: Politely ask readers to leave (honest) reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, or Barnes & Noble post-launch.

5. Plan a Launch Event

A launch event creates buzz and celebrates your achievement:

• Virtual or In-Person: Host a livestreamed Q&A, a local bookstore signing, or a hybrid event.

• Engage Your Audience: Share excerpts, discuss your inspiration, or run a raffle for signed copies.

• Promote Widely: Use your newsletter, social media, and local media to spread the word.

Preparing for Book Publication (if you’re going the indie route)

1. Polish Your Manuscript

A professional manuscript is non-negotiable:

• Hire an Editor: Developmental and copyediting ensure your story is cohesive and error-free.

• Beta Readers: Get feedback from trusted readers in your genre to catch plot holes or pacing issues.

• Proofread: A final proofread catches lingering typos that could distract readers.

2. Design a Standout Cover

Your cover is your book’s first impression:

• Hire a Professional: Invest in a designer familiar with your genre’s trends (e.g., dark, moody covers for thrillers or vibrant ones for romance).

• Test It: Share mockups with your audience to gauge reactions.

• Optimize for Thumbnails: Ensure the title and imagery are clear at small sizes for online retailers.

3. Understand Your Publishing Path

Whether traditional or self-publishing, know your responsibilities:

• Traditional Publishing: Work closely with your publisher on timelines, marketing plans, and distribution. Be proactive in supplementing their efforts.

• Self-Publishing: You’re in charge of formatting, uploading to platforms like Amazon KDP, and setting pricing. Research competitive pricing in your genre.

• Hybrid Publishing: Clarify what your hybrid publisher handles and what falls to you, especially marketing.

4. Plan Your Timeline

A clear timeline keeps you on track:

• 6–12 Months Out: Finalize your manuscript, start building your platform, and research editors/designers.

• 3–6 Months Out: Send ARCs, set up pre-orders, and plan your launch event.

• 1–3 Months Out: Ramp up marketing, schedule social media posts, and confirm distribution.

• Launch Week: Engage with readers, monitor sales, and celebrate!

Final Thoughts

Marketing and preparing for publication can feel overwhelming and like total nightmare fuel. Trust me, I know! I have a super hard time plugging my own work. However, breaking it into manageable steps makes it achievable. Start early, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to experiment with what resonates with your audience.

My reasons for leaving are well documented. I did some major news interviews with the LA Times and News Nation. The cost of living had skyrocketed, pricing out writers like me. Strikes were looming. But bigger than that, I saw how mismanaged the city (and the state) were during the pandemic with crime surging and more.

To quote Tom Petty: “Time to move on, time to get going …”

Still even out in the desert, we had power outages and refugees staying here. My last home in LA was in Malibu right on the beach. I wonder if it’s still standing. My friends out here predict Joshua Tree will now experience and big second wave of folks leaving LA and the cities. The world is reshaping itself before our very eyes.

Change is the only constant.

I realize I haven’t posted here in a moment (despite having some news to announce!). I was swamped under deadlines through the very end of the year. I confess to burnout. It’s hard to work through holidays when everyone else seems to have time off. Being a writer is like always having homework. My deadlines grow like resistant weeds.

Add to the mix of everdayness disaster to disaster lately. True to form, the new year erupted into flames to welcome us to 2025. What can any of us do in the face of disasters? And events far out of our control? Like everyone else, I doom scroll and flip to social media, but I’m bombarded by darkness and hysteria … and the algorithms feed that. Post something mundane and peace—and I bet nobody sees it.

This is a nice refuge for writing longer form and sharing thoughts. 2025 is shaping up to be a big year for me professionally. I have three books out this year. Luckily, the manuscript I turned in over Christmas looks solid. I got my editorial letter back. I have two more books to write this year … maybe more if an offer that came in manifests. I admit I was looking forward to more time off, but duty calls.

TIPS FOR STAYING SANE & WRITING THROUGH DISASTERS

1. Focus on what you can control. Release the rest of it. Sage if you must!

2. Cardio. Anything that moves your body. A walk around the block. A walking pad strolling through Hogwarts on your TV. Fight or flight necessitates movement.

3. Break big projects into smaller daily goals.

4. Then when you hit that goal, stop for the day. Have a true end and routine to unwind—exercise, shower or hot bath, make something nutritious to eat.

5. Writing Sprints. My students love these too. These help tremendously when you’re super distracted or burnt out. Hyper focus, then you can take a break.

6. Lean on friends. I have text buddies. That way, when you have a break, you can interact with humanity. Especially true if you write and work from home.

7. Meal prepping. This sounds unrelated to writing, but having healthy meals prepared ahead of time that you can grab and eat easily is a game changer.

8. Naps. You heard me. Writing is incredibly taxing on your brain! Rest helps to reboot and keeps you from burning out.

9. When it’s really tough, don’t feel bad for writing in bed with music or TV or whatever helps! I wrote a lot of books in my bed. Most of Disney Chills (a series spawned during the pandemic).

10. Give yourself grace. We are only human. Ask for extensions when you need them. Usually, I hit my deadlines. But I’ve needed extra time over the last year.

The election week I knew would be a heavy time, so I booked myself on a writing retreat in Ireland out of the country … and “The Washington Post” wrote about it.

The gift and curse of being a science fiction writing (especially one on the spectrum) is glimpsing futures before they fully manifest. I’m writing this from my humble writing desk in Dublin, looking out over the rooftops, sending so much love and light across the pond. I fly back home to California tomorrow to see the world anew.

Grief is real and needs to be felt deeply. But grief is not a destructive force unless you let it turn you and darken your soul. My biggest and best advice is the same thing I said to the journalist interviewing me. Channel it into your art! And keep celebrating creatives and art—and keep creating and supporting creatives!

Turn darkness and weave it into light. Light so bright, you can’t help but let it blind you and the world. Spread your light via your artwork, whatever medium you choose. I’m a writer, primarily of longform fiction, but also screenplays and a smattering of short stories. And I’m on a major deadline for “Namaste & Slay” my dark feminist “Most Dangerous Game” story. It’s adapted from a short story of mine that published, and yet has only become more topical over time. That’s how it goes sometimes.

Ireland has provided a lovely buffer and inspiration, where I broke the backbone of the dark thriller, crafting chapters and spinning stories out of thin air like magic.

MORE ON MY PROCESS

A Sacrifice of Blood and Stars has been a labor of love over the last many years.

Since I started this book, presidents have come and gone. We experienced a global pandemic. I wrote a seven-book series for Disney, along with stories for Star Wars, Frozen, and many anthologies. I moved. More than once. The world realigned itself. But interestingly, this book only became more topical (chilling to contemplate).

I first had the idea to write a “Dear John” in outer space sci-fi romance back in 2015, following the completion of my The 13th Continuum trilogy.

That was my debut as an author and marathon writing to meet deadlines for the second and third books. I wanted to explore the militarization of space that I figured was coming. I started writing in my own little bubble.

This is before the president announced Space Force.

ON WRITING SCI-FI

That’s the thing with being a sci-fi writer. The future tends to catch up to your work … if you’re doing your job right. That’s both exciting and horrifying in equal measure.

In fact, I had to pause drafting the book numerous times, including during the time between the infamous speech where the president accidentally-on-purpose (I mean, who really knows?) announced the creation of the fifth branch of the US military—and the official speech from our vice president solidifying this brave new world. We were officially militarizing outer space.

With the cascade of real world events, I had to go back and rework some of my worldbuilding. My little book had a spotlight on the subject matter. I had to rename the military branch that my character enlists in “Space Force.”

I had to call them not “soldiers” but “guardians.” Even the Star Trek-esque logo happened. I tucked my head down and kept writing.

Then Disney came knocking in this time period. I signed a deal for Disney Chills for three books. Then five books. All before the first one—Part of Your Nightmare with Ursula from The Little Mermaid had even come out. We debuted the series in Spring 2020 right in the midst of the pandemic. California was under strict lockdown.

I kept writing. On and off, I worked on Sacrifice in the shadows. Disney Chills burst into the world, miraculously finding an audience even though the main places for kids to discover new books—schools, libraries, and brick-and-mortar bookstores—were closed. The books got translated and went international. Next, Star Wars hired me to write a canon Darth Vader story. Disney wanted more books, expanding the series to seven total.

I kept writing. I moved again and again.

Why? The cost of living skyrocketed. This was true in SoCal more than anywhere. Across the city, rent soared. Inflation hit. Under the cover of the pandemic, corporations had bought up affordable single family housing that hadn’t already been converted to Airbnbs. Now, these companies own more than 40% of housing.

And I kept writing.

It wasn’t easy, but I finally finished the first draft of Sacrifice. I sent it to my agent … my breath held. The book was “new adult.” Stylistically it had YA accessibility and coming-of-age themes, but it was more of an adult-style romance. But also a military sci-fi.

Who would want this book?

Luckily, my agent loved it and gave notes. I started a big revision to clean up my sprawling draft (first draft was 185k words). I cut it down. This is a normal part of my process.

Unfortunately, “New Adult” was a dead zone per the Big Publishers. So was science fiction. It didn’t sell at Barnes and Noble—and they dictate the industry in a lot of ways. They passed and passed. They didn’t get it. They didn’t know how to market it. They pondered—where do we shelve it at Barnes & Noble? How do we market this book?

They kept passing.

But meanwhile, things were changing in the publishing landscape. Readers were speaking out about what they wanted to read—NA fantasy was catching fire. The books that were blowing up were indie-driven.

I won’t bore you with all the submission details. You can go back and read the archives, where I documented much of that process. I got lucky, too. The editor from my debut sci-fi series had gone to a new publisher that specialized in Sci-Fi and Fantasy. They had published “The Martian” audiobook among many others.

Also as mentioned, the market had shifted … again. Publishing was in total flux.

But “romantasy” had become the rage. An indie book called Fourth Wing was the biggest book in the world. The sequel was inspiring release parties at book stores. It was also NA with Hunger Games and military vibes. Would my little “astromance” align with what readers were craving? I signed my book deal and hoped.

I guess we’re going to find out!

It’s been a busy summer.

Is it still summer? What day is it … what month?

That’s what it feels like when you’re juggling two major book deadlines and a whole bunch of teaching and other work. I haven’t had a day off in months. Publishing (and Hollywood) often work this way … it’s feast or famine … and you can’t complain when you’re feasting. Especially with all the recent upheaval in our industries.

The good news? I got the drafts in on both deadlines.

This includes the STILL SECRET Disney project.

But turning in work as an author is like throwing a boomerang—it comes right back and with notes. The Disney project is already back for revision work with an editorial letter and line edits. Luckily, everyone likes the direction of the story. That’s a major relief. I have to turn it around by the end of the month … and I’ll dig in and get it done.

At least, that’s what I’m telling myself.

Fortunately, I’m off to the Studios of Key West on Friday for a two-week artist residency. I’ll be teaching a workshop on The Art of Villainy, but otherwise I have time to write and work in a beautiful location. And I will be working away.

The other book is the sequel to A Sacrifice of Blood & Stars—it’s a planned trilogy. The book is epic space opera and the draft came in at about 130k words. That’s right on target and comps to the first book that’s out on September 17th. Writing at this length is challenging, even seeing the wood through the trees, juggling two big POVs.

If you’re wondering what happened to The Winds of Winter or Name of the Wind Book 3 … no easy feat to pull off. My book is a wild ride. My editor should be reading it soon. I’m at the place of … I HOPE SHE DOESN’T HATE IT / IT’S NOT TERRIBLE!!!!

A totally normal part of the writing process that never changes even if you’re insanely successful with a major fan base. Writing is self-doubt. Writing is revising. Writing is always knowing it could bet better and hoping you have it in you to make it better.

Itinerant Writer / Have Laptop, Will Travel

I thought it would be fun to share where in the world I’m traveling and writing this year. Before the pandemic, I traveled a ton for different writing retreats, workshops & programs. I’ve decided this is the year that I kick back into “itinerant writer” mode.

I’m lucky that my work is largely portable and can travel anywhere in the world with me. I just finished teaching a summer writing program at Stanford, and now I’m up in Sonoma and wine country for a few days visiting my brother (and writing this). I love it up here so much, now I’m wondering if I should move up here.

Does anyone else travel and get moving fantasies??

I fly back home to Joshua Tree tomorrow PM … and then I’m off to Key West on Friday (leaving at some ungodly early hour from a not close airport). It’ll be worth it, however. My last stint in Key West for a month was memorable. I loved the tropical vibes, diverse culture, night life, and most of all, the gorgeous beaches and wonderful folks at the Studios of Key West. Oh, and Jude Blume’s bookstore Books & Books! I taught two workshops and did reading and signing for them.

I also closed my deal for Disney Chills while there … and the first book was Ursula!

Like I said—it was memorable!

This time, I’ll be working on revising the secret Disney project and teaching a workshop on The Art of Villainy.

Howdy from Joshua Tree! It’s been hot, but also cosmically beautiful with the stars and moon at night to keep me company from my desert enclave. The hammock is my favorite spot (as pictured in the LA Times article … see below).

I’ve been holed up writing all summer. Next, I’ll be traveling all of August. First, I’m headed to Stanford to teach a summer camp on writing fractured fairytales, then to Key West for a two-week residency with the Studios of Key West.

I’ll be back West in September in time for a horror writers retreat to Big Bear, then for the publication of A SACRIFICE OF BLOOD & STARS September 17th.

So, I thought I’d write up some quick updates from my writing desk (as I watch the world burn on the TV). This has not been the easiest summer to be writing. I just saw Jennifer L. Armentrout—an author I look up to and follow closely—post a “world burning” meme about how hard it is to write on deadline during this chaos.

Thankfully, I did get my secret Disney project draft out to my editor on Friday. Whew! I had less than three weeks to draft it once my outline got approved (which can be a lengthy process working with big IP). I’m super excited to announce this one!

Now come the nerves. I haven’t worked with this editor before. It's funny, no matter how many books you publish, I don't think the nerves ever fully go away. And with expectation, maybe they get even worse. What do you think? How do you deal with your work getting read both my editors and buy the wider world?

This week, I also have to finish the sequel to A SACRIFICE OF BLOOD & STARS, my new space romantasy series debuting in Sept. While wrapped around a romance, that book contains highly topical elements that build into the second book. The short answer is, it’s never been harder to be a creative, both because of the spiraling cost of living and stagnant or down pay, but also the incredible noise of the dimming world.

GREAT NEWS—the latest installment in my Disney Chills series CIRCLE OF TER-ROAR featuring Scar from "The Lion King" snagged a Scribe Award nomination for best Media Tie-In Fiction in the "Young Adult and Middle Grade" category.

This is the seventh book in my Disney villains series. I’m so pleased it got noticed. This also means that every book and series I’ve written has won or been nominated for books awards, including the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards, the Bram Stoker Awards, and more.

The truth is that I’ve been avoiding writing this post. Why? Because it’s still painful sometimes to process everything I’ve lost since the pandemic. In the aftermath of COVID leading into the double hollywood strikes, I made a drastic choice to leave LA and move out to the desert for one reason—the reduce my cost of living.

It’s hard talking about these things.

I’m “successful.” I work hard and have multiple book deals and income streams. I’m also pretty frugal and down-to-earth.

But none of that shielded me from what happened. And I’m not alone in my suffering. This issue is widespread through all of my industries (film/tv and publishing … and teaching). And it’s finally getting national media attention.

I decided to speak out even if it risked tarnishing my “successful” reputation. That turned into a profile in the LA Times that profiled me and told my whole story.

The easiest thing is to read it. That story ended up running on the front page. Then cable news started calling. Since then, I’ve heard from friends, acquaintances and strangers thanking me for speaking out and highlighting the problem. Many have been out of work for over a year since the strikes first happened.

The reasons are myriad and written about a lot. Corporatization and mergers of all media. Massive contraction of film and tv slates (and publishing). Stagnant pay or reduced—if you’re lucky enough to get paid. Fighting for residuals and royalties that sustain us gig to give, movie to movie, book to book, which these corporations are trying to reduce or eliminate. These industry trends were accelerated by pandemic polices. Then came the cost of living spikes.

Rent increases. The housing market. Inflation (though companies are making record profits, so it’s likely more price gouging and costflation).

Author Stephanie Land has a great Substack that talks about all of these issues that involve affordable housing and challenges for creatives. I highly recommend subscribing and reading her books, too.

The result is an exodus from LA of the creative class. This includes chefs, designers, and more. When a city loses its creative class, it loses its culture.

And it … dies.

It’s that simple. We’re priced out. I could kill myself to live in a box with no rent control in a crumbling neighborhood—or I could move to the desert and reduce my overhead, so I can keep writing. I am committed to my art at all costs. In many ways, it’s all I care about in this world; and it’s how I contribute, too.

I made a choice; it was a hard one. It took me away from a city that had been my home for twenty years since college, where all more of my friends and work contacts live. I’m restarting my life at age 44, in many ways from scratch. I spent the first year in the desert watching my industry go on strike. My manager said, “You picked a good year to be out of LA.” I saw him again recently at WonderCon, along with many other folks.

This was in March 2024 (this year). The catchphrase, which got quoted in the LA Times piece, was already “Stay alive ‘til 2025.” It felt too early in the year to be saying that, but now we’re staring down the barrel of another strike.

I get asked about Hollywood projects a lot. My debut series “The 13th Continuum” was setup at Sony Pictures for TV, packaged with a great producer and writers. They renewed the option to hold through the strikes … and then it, along with many other projects around town, became a causality of the the strikes and contraction.

That doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen; just not soon, I’m guessing.

So, I left at the right time. It’s hard to watch work you’ve spent years building crumble for reasons far outside your control (and pay grade). At the same time that happened, my rent kept getting raised out from under me, totally out of whack with income. Everything got impossibly expensive. I make more money now than I ever have (as a creative), yet I keep being able to afford less.

When I first moved to LA, I didn’t get paid anything. Michael Bay’s company paid me $500/week (yeah, you read that right). But I shared a Brentwood adjacent apartment with a roommate (a friend from Harvard). It was a 2 bed / 2 bath. My share was $650/ month. So, my rent was roughly a little more than 1/4 my income. I had to watch spending, but everything cost less. Technology hadn’t yet invaded our lives where we own nothing and pay monthly. I didn’t even own a home computer or internet.

My roommate had dial-up AOL I used to job search and print out Mapquest (to find interviews in the sprawling metropolis where I constantly got lost). I still had to go to Kinko’s to fax resumes for most job applications. FAX … yup.

This was Fall of 2001 (which was a terribly difficult time to find work post 9/11 … my specific year and class has gotten hammered at every turn). It turns out I probably arrived in town just a smidgen too late (by a year or two), or too early (before Facebook and the rise of tech).

LA was doable when I had rent control. But then when my landlords sold my house, it’s been free fall ever since. Even now, moving to a less expensive area and making more money, my rent and utilities are roughly 50% of my income. My story isn’t uncommon anymore. The math doesn’t math. Yes, I pick up gigs and side jobs. I think I probably have six jobs. Yes, I’m educated, skilled, and work super hard.

Luckily, the Joshua Tree community is vibrant, welcoming to artists, and still more affordable. But even that is beginning to change out here as more folks flee the cities and move out to the desert and other smaller communities. I wonder if it will last.

And it’s worth noting, that we are vulnerable to climate change (which I’ve begun to call “climate collapse”). Right now, as I write these words, we are weathering a record heat dome event. Palm Springs hit an all-time record temp of 123 degrees. Nobody is spared from the damage we’ve wrought to our planet in the end.

I miss LA. But as I said in the LA Times, the LA I miss doesn’t exist anymore.

The city is dying. It’s only for the wealthy elites now.

Creatives are leaving. You know what’s worse?

Young people aren’t moving there anymore. It’s not just LA, but most major cities of the past. I read that 40% of Gen Z still lives at home. Texas is booming. Why? It’s not the politics—it’s the affordability. Period. Older generations enriched themselves and cashed in on housing (many becoming millionaires without much effort) at the expense of their kids ever owning a home or having any housing stability.

I don’t think it will recover in my lifetime, but I hope it will be better for the kids growing up now (who I write many of my books for).

Howdy writers!

I’m back in the hi desert and recovering from StokerCon—the annual gathering of the Horror Writers Association! They’re my favorite professional writers trade group.

The funny thing is … I am an accidental horror writer.

My debut graphic novel SPECTRE DEEP 6 was a finalist for the Bram Stoker award. That surprised me because I didn't even think it was horror!

But in retrospect, the book is about ghosts… so yeah.

I also wasn’t planning to write a whole villains book series for Disney, but somehow that happened, too. And looking back, the very first films I worked on in Hollywood were Donnie Darko (as an intern during college for the producers) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake & prequel. I also then went to New Line Cinema … the “House that Freddy built.” Plus, I love horror movies, books … you name it.

So, I suppose the things you love have a way of finding you.

Maybe that’s the lesson?

I decided to hit StokerCon this year since it was in SoCal. I hadn’t been since the very first one back pre-Covid (where I remember hanging with George R.R. Martin and deciding he was never finishing his GOT book series). It was memorable, to say the least. But then COVID closed the world, and I hunkered down to write Disney Chills.

StokerCon was a blast this year! I had two great panels, including “Writing Middle Grade Horror” and writing IP (like Disney and Star Wars). Highlights included seeing friends like guest of honor Jonathan Maberry and friends like Scott Siglar.

I also taught an in-person “Worldbuilding for Horror” workshop for Horror University. And participated in the mass author signing. A big highlight was getting to read from my new “Weird Tales” story Denizen of Deep Holler from the recently released “Occult Detective” issue that went to #1 on Amazon in category.

When I first arrived, a woman approached me in the lobby and asked, “Are you Jennifer Brody?” She proceeded to tell me that she and her husband read my story on the plane to San Diego and that it was the standout story in the issue.

As a writer, you never know who will read your stuff. Or if it will even get noticed. It’s always amazing and validating to hear from readers. It helps keep us going.

Now, I’m back home and trying to recover. Cons are fun, but always take a lot out of you. I’m halfway through the second book in the A SACRIFICE OF BLOOD AND STARS series. I’m closing two new deals—and so excited to announce them!

I have a lot to write this summer, and into the next calendar year. Stay tuned for more fun announcements.
