Human history has been marked by three pivotal revolutions: the Cognitive Revolution (around 70,000 years ago), the Agricultural Revolution (about 10,000 years ago), and the Scientific Revolution (roughly 500 years ago).

These turning points empowered Homo sapiens to create and organise around shared ideas and beliefs—such as religion, capitalism, and politics—that exist only in our imaginations.

These collective myths have enabled our species to dominate the planet and bring us to a point where we may soon surpass the forces of natural selection.

Key Insights and Lessons

The emergence of culture began around 70,000 years ago, with Homo sapiens evolving in Africa about 2.5 million years ago.

For most of prehistory, humans were ordinary animals, not dominant. Only in the last 100,000 years did we rapidly rise to the top of the food chain, which left both us and other species unprepared for the consequences.

Our large brains use a disproportionate amount of energy, and our ability to communicate complex, abstract ideas sets us apart from other animals.

Human evolution wasn’t linear—multiple human species coexisted for millennia, and Homo sapiens’ survival involved a mix of interbreeding and replacement of other species like Neanderthals.

Part I of Mustafa Suleyman’s “The Coming Wave” offers a sweeping historical panorama of technological surges, charting humanity’s journey from fire and stone tools to electrification, digital computing, and beyond.

Suleyman frames these transformative eras as “waves”—periods when a foundational innovation emerges, propagates rapidly, and irreversibly reshapes the world. These waves are propelled not only by market dynamics and competition, but by a deep-seated human drive to transcend boundaries and realise what was previously impossible.

Suleyman’s narrative draws on vivid examples: the agricultural revolution, the invention of the printing press, the combustion engine, and the computer age. Each began as an arcane or costly oddity, then matured into an indispensable aspect of everyday life. Even nuclear technology, often cited as an exception because of attempts at containment, is revealed to be precariously managed—riven by near-misses, accidents, and international tensions. Suleyman argues that true containment, in which society decisively curbs the spread and impact of a powerful technology, is virtually non-existent. Innovation, he contends, is inherently viral: it leaps borders, ignites breakthroughs, and resists even the most strenuous efforts to constrain it.

This leads to what Suleyman terms the “containment problem”: as the velocity of innovation increases—particularly with fields like AI and synthetic biology—so does the challenge of ensuring that these technologies do more good than harm. History suggests that, once a powerful tool is discovered, shutting the door again is nearly impossible. Now, Suleyman insists, we no longer have the luxury of slow, reactive governance. The “containment problem”—once obscure—is thrust into the spotlight. Our task is to balance humanity’s primordial urge to build, invent, and explore with the new imperative to constrain and safeguard unprecedented power. Is this even possible?

A sense of inevitability permeates these chapters.

Suleyman argues that the “Cambrian explosion” of new capabilities has already begun: tools like ChatGPT, DALL·E, and advances in CRISPR are mere harbingers of a much broader transformation. He warns that societies are largely unprepared to harness or moderate this tidal wave of change, let alone anticipate its cascading effects.

The real question is no longer “if” but “how” we can meaningfully contain or govern such unstoppable forces—especially as states and corporations have every incentive to accelerate them. The four core features Suleyman describes—asymmetry, hyper-evolution, omni-use, and autonomy—promise to upend all conventional approaches to regulation, ethics, and global governance. The analogy to the medieval stirrup is apt—where one invention shifted the balance of power for centuries. Today’s tech is “stirrups on steroids,” offering both authoritarian states and small groups unprecedented offensive and disruptive capabilities.

Part III sketches two simultaneous trends:

1. Centralisation: Some states and corporations may seize the wave to establish pervasive surveillance and control, risking new forms of technocratic authoritarianism.

2. Fragmentation: Conversely, power can splinter, with small groups or “micro-states” wielding advanced tech once reserved for superpowers, leading to radical autonomy and the potential for chaos.

The paradox is clear: We need unstoppable technology to solve humanity’s gravest challenges, but we must also contain it to avoid disaster.

4. Insider Accountability: Encourage critics to work within companies and labs, building safety and oversight directly into the most advanced systems.

5. New Corporate Forms: Experiment with business structures that balance profit and ethical purpose, embedding safety as a core organisational value.

6. Government Reform: Scale up public sector expertise, license advanced systems, reform taxation, and build rapid response capabilities for technological crises.

7. Alliances and Treaties: Pursue international agreements to manage global risks—just as with nuclear non-proliferation or climate accords.

In 2013, Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist and renowned Wharton professor, published the influential book Give and Take.

Already a New York Times bestselling author, Grant’s work quickly gained recognition, earning spots on best books lists by the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Oprah, and the Washington Post.

In Give and Take, Grant shifts the focus from individual achievement to team dynamics, emphasizing the importance of employee interactions—particularly the willingness to help others.

His research reveals that an organization’s success increasingly hinges on collaboration, categorizing people in the workplace as takers (who primarily receive), matchers (who seek balance in giving and receiving), and givers (who help others without expecting anything in return).

After reading the first chapter and watching Grant’s TED talk, it’s clear that most people identify as matchers.

Grant’s extensive research—spanning engineers, medical students, and sales professionals—showed a surprising trend: the most generous individuals often had the lowest performance metrics, such as sales figures or grades, because their time and energy were devoted to helping others.

Within organizations, some leaders stand out as Talent Magnets—they attract top performers, help them thrive, and prepare them for future success. These leaders are recognized not just for achieving great outcomes, but for cultivating environments where emerging talent can develop and advance. They play a pivotal role in accelerating the growth of others’ careers.

In contrast, some leaders focus on acquiring people as assets to build their own stature. Instead of nurturing and developing talent, they simply assign individuals to tasks, often leaving their potential untapped.

Talent Magnets exemplify the Multiplier approach. They draw exceptional people to their teams, not just through recruitment skills, but because professionals seek them out, knowing their abilities will be recognized and their value enhanced. These leaders are adept at bringing out the best in everyone, unlocking hidden potential, and ensuring individuals are working in roles where they can make the greatest impact.

3. The Liberator

“Multipliers, by contrast, liberate people from the oppressive forces within the corporate hierarchy. They free people to think, to speak, and to act with reason. They create an environment where the best ideas surface and where people do their best work.”

In most hierarchical organizations, power dynamics often create an uneven playing field. Senior leaders occupy the top, allowing their ideas and decisions to flow downward, which can unintentionally stifle independent thinking and enable authoritarian ‘Tyrants’ to dominate.

Tyrants foster a stressful, anxiety-filled atmosphere where people feel constrained. In contrast, Liberators cultivate a demanding yet energizing environment—one that calls for focus, dedication, and effort. Here, individuals are motivated to think independently and feel compelled to give their best. While Tyrants make people hesitant to stand out, Liberators inspire them to take initiative.

When it comes to setting direction, Multipliers take on the role of Challengers. They leverage their intelligence to identify valuable opportunities and then push their organizations to reach for them. Rather than being constrained by their own expertise, they encourage their teams to extend beyond what anyone currently knows. This approach fosters organizations that thoroughly understand the obstacles they face and are energized and focused on tackling them.

In contrast, Diminishers act as Know-It-Alls. They believe their job is to be the most knowledgeable person in the room and to dictate what needs to be done. This leads teams to center their efforts around the leader’s knowledge, often wasting time trying to anticipate or please the boss. Ultimately, this mindset restricts what the team can achieve and leaves employees feeling demotivated instead of inspired.

5. The Debate Maker

Although some leaders try to include others in discussions, they often still believe that only a select few possess the true intelligence within the organization. This limited perspective overlooks the potential insights that can emerge when more people are actively involved and challenged.

A leader’s ability to tap into the full intellectual capacity of their team is shaped by their core beliefs. Diminishers typically think that only certain voices matter, while Multipliers value input from everyone who can contribute. As ‘Debate Makers,’ Multipliers understand that while not every decision needs group input, important choices benefit from thorough, fact-based debate. Through open discussion, they encourage people to challenge each other’s thinking, which ultimately raises the organization’s collective intelligence.

Rather than dominating conversations or making unilateral decisions like Diminishers, Multipliers set up meaningful debates, encourage diverse viewpoints, and help guide the group toward well-informed decisions.

6. The Investor

“Multipliers invest in the success of others. They may jump in to teach and share their ideas, but they always return to accountability.”

When a team encounters problems, do you step in and take control, or do you empower others to resolve it? If you add your ideas to a discussion, do you ultimately return ownership to the team, or do you keep control yourself? Leaders who hold onto ownership foster dependence—this is the Diminisher’s approach. They often intervene directly and achieve results through their own involvement.

In contrast, Multipliers build independent teams by giving people responsibility for outcomes and supporting their growth. They understand they can’t always be present to fix every issue, so they help team members become capable and self-reliant.

As ‘Investors,’ Multipliers hand responsibility back to their teams, reinforcing accountability where it belongs. This approach helps create organizations where people don’t constantly rely on the leader to step in and solve problems.

7. The Accidental Diminisher

“While the narcissistic leaders grab the headlines, the vast majority of diminishing happening inside our workplaces is done by the Accidental Diminisher; managers with the best of intentions, good people who think they are doing a good job leading.”

Many well-meaning managers unintentionally hold their teams back through their genuine efforts to help or lead. This can happen if they’re too quick to offer solutions, act swiftly, or are overly supportive and enthusiastic.

One of the most common unintentional diminishing behaviors is the role of the ‘Rescuer.’ These leaders dislike watching others struggle or make mistakes, so at the first sign of trouble, they intervene—sometimes dramatically, but more often by simply stepping in to resolve issues and ensure the team succeeds.

While their motives are positive, frequent rescuing deprives team members of critical learning experiences. When leaders help too quickly and too often, employees can become dependent and less capable. Rather than feeling accomplished, team members may end up frustrated and less confident because they didn’t achieve success on their own.

It’s important to realize that these actions don’t make someone a Diminisher, but they do increase the risk of unintentionally having a diminishing effect. Often, leaders are unaware of the negative impact and may be the last to recognize it. Developing self-awareness and noticing these patterns early is the best way to prevent accidental diminishing.

8. Dealing with Diminishers

“It is tempting to hit a wall and confront your Diminisher; it is equally tempting to fall back and comply. But there is a third, more productive alternative: multiply your way out.”

Many well-intentioned managers find themselves working under diminishing leaders. Although they want to bring out the best in others, they often feel pulled down by the influence of a Diminisher.

The most common responses to Diminishers are to confront them directly, avoid them, keep your head down and comply, try to persuade them you’re right, or escalate the issue to HR. However, while these strategies are popular, they are rarely effective. Diminishers can undermine your ability to think clearly and cope well, making it even harder to respond constructively.

Navigating the challenges posed by Diminishers demands your sharpest thinking. With the right approach and thoughtful strategies, you can lessen the negative impact such leaders have on you. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution—only practical ideas that require careful judgment and tact.

Whereas leading like a Multiplier can be taught as a science, handling Diminishers is more of an art. But if you persist and act wisely, you can become one of the ‘Invincibles’—people who continue to perform at their best and contribute their full intelligence, even when surrounded by diminishing leadership.
