But one thing I knew going into it, was just how much we would love it in a coastal Massachusetts town. I never had a doubt. I knew from day one this would be the best decision we ever made. And it was.

Living on the south shore of Massachusetts is like waking up on a Saturday, every day. It’s like ordering the first lobster roll of the season, waiting in line for the first ice cream cone, and heading to the beach on the first 80 degree day. It’s feeling like you’re living in a summer rom-com that you binge and want to relive over and over again. It’s knowing how lucky you are to be here and how grateful you are to experience it.

It’s drives to the beach in the middle of the day, romanticizing your lunch in the sand, tasting the salt water on your tongue, your dog swimming in the ocean, and saying things like “let’s eat outdoors somewhere.” or “I want a fun cocktail”

It’s watching the sunset in your favorite spot, listening to live music, laughing with loved ones, and being so present you forget what time it is.

It’s knowing that as big and grand as this world is, there’s nowhere else you’d rather be

But do we always want it this way? That’s been a tough question to answer.

Living in a quiet and peaceful home is one thing, but knowing if motherhood is for you is a completely separate question. I have battled with this thought most of my twenties and still go back and forth in my early 30s. And while I am almost certain I have my answer, I wanted to share what my thought process has been like.

Society’s Pressure to Become A Mother

There isn’t a woman on the face of the earth who hasn’t, at some point, felt the pressure to have kids. It is ingrained in our society and is still valued as the most important thing a woman can do with her life. And the most selfless.

On the contrary, and I mean 0 disrespect when I say this, but I have always viewed it to be quite selfish. I say that because it takes an incredible amount of strength, discipline, and calculation to raise a child to be a good person. While I do think that everyone is good by default, you can still have a child at the wrong time, under unideal circumstances, and can negatively affect the kind of person they will become.

And honestly what is more selfish than raising a human to be just like you? Add your value in society, self-preservation, having your bloodline continue, your last name carried on, etc. It’s all selfish. But that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad thing.

I say this to make the point that we place such importance on something that is literally bigger than we could ever imagine. You can be the best parents in the world and your kid will still take on all the worst parts of you if you aren’t careful.

How often do people actually stop to think about this? For a society that loves to see women become mothers, there’s very little emphasis on waiting until you’re ready.

“Well, you’ll never be ready.” That’s exactly my point.

Society’s Perception of Mothers

Coincidentally, once a woman becomes a mother, they are now classified as a certain type of person in society. This may be the most unfair stigma of all. Mothers are expected to be the ones that do it all. The ones who make sacrifices and stay strong through the years. They look out for everyone. But my question has always been, so who looks out for them?

The Physical & Emotional Labor of Becoming a Mom

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t terrified of childbirth. Imagining being in a hospital with a belly about to burst and having to give birth to a child is something unfathomable to me, especially since I have only ever been in the hospital for stitches as a kid.

Not only does the entire process of giving birth sound terrible but the aftermath doesn’t sound any better. My eyes have been opened to postpartum depression in more ways than one and it sounds debilitating. And even with the most supportive partner, the mother is almost always doing the majority of the work as caretaker.

Life is Amazing Without Kids

I know there are so many women who knew their entire lives they wanted to be a mom. That was never me. It was something I knew I had to do up until my mid twenties when I realized I actually don’t have to if I didn’t want to.

If you follow me on social media, then you know how incredibly happy and positive I am. I’ve been this way my entire life. I have a supportive family, the best friends, an amazing fiancé, a career I’m obsessed with and a dog that I love with my entire heart. Life continues to get better and there are so many things I enjoy about life including travel, reading, eating, seasons, holidays, celebrations, learning, connecting with others etc.

I have never felt like something is missing. Life feels complete.

I Don’t Want To Lose My Identity

Perhaps the most jarring reality is how much you change when you become a mom. How you view the world, your life, others, and yourself. I know this is the kind of love that knocks you over and I’m scared of losing what makes me, me. I’m a headstrong, driven, understanding, empathetic, and curious person. What if these things change?

But on the flip side…

Being Pregnant Is An Experience I’m Curious About

While childbirth isn’t something I would look forward to, being pregnant sounds like a one-of-a-kind experience. Assuming that I am able to bear a child, the act of growing a baby in your body is incredible. I imagine you start to feel very in-tune with your body and seeing yourself differently and what you are capable of. Also, I think I could rock a pregnant belly.

Having Kids Sounds Incredibly Fulfilling

Witnessing your baby absorb and learn the world around them sounds amazing. Teaching them, playing with them, helping them, and guiding them must be fulfilling in a way that no one can understand unless you are in it. And having your own little family unit is such a powerful thing to have.

I Have So Much Love And Positivity To Give

I feel I have a duty to pass on my love and positivity for life as much as I can. It’s hard to imagine a world in which I didn’t want to pass this on to children who would greatly benefit from it. There’s a lot of broken people in this world and at least I know I would do everything in my power to cultivate a happy life for them too.

I Want To Hangout With My Adult Kids

Kids are cute but I love the idea of having a relationship with my adult child. Assuming they want to hangout with me too, I want to always be a happy and safe space for them so they will want to be with me just as much.

It Sounds Like The Greatest Adventure of All

While I obviously and firmly believe you can have the utmost fulfilling and adventurous life without kids, I do think it is likely the greatest adventure you could embark on. Because it sounds like something bigger than yourself.

So yeah, at 34 years old, my mind goes back and forth. And while I love my quiet home, my peaceful life, and paws on the wood floors….maybe tiny feet wouldn’t be so bad.

Maybe, just maybe, it would make sense after all.

How to Get to Nantucket

If you’re planning a trip to Nantucket, there are several ferry options to choose from depending on where you’re coming from and whether you plan to bring a car. Hy-Line Cruises, departing from Hyannis, offers high-speed service only (no cars allowed), with a travel time of about an hour. Round-trip fares are approximately $91 for adults and $55 for kids. This is a popular option, so it’s best to book early for summer weekends.

The Steamship Authority, also from Hyannis, offers both traditional and high-speed ferries. The traditional ferry allows cars and is more affordable at $41 round trip for adults, while the high-speed option is priced around $89 round trip. If you’re planning to bring a vehicle, make sure to book several months in advance as space fills up quickly.

Coming from Southern Massachusetts or Rhode Island? The Seastreak ferry from New Bedford is a great choice. This high-speed ferry does not allow cars and takes about two hours. Round-trip adult tickets are priced around $104, making it a convenient and comfortable option if you’re starting from farther south.

For those staying in the Mid-Cape area, the Freedom Cruise Line from Harwich Port is a seasonal fast ferry that takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It does not accommodate cars, but it’s a solid choice for a quick trip from that region. Adult round-trip fares are around $99, and kids’ tickets are $65.

Each ferry offers a unique route to the island, so the best choice depends on your location, travel preferences, and whether you need to bring a car.

If you’re short on time (or love a scenic aerial view), direct flights to Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK) are available from Boston, NYC, and beyond, especially during peak summer season.

Rent a Jeep for the ultimate Nantucket off-roading experience

If you’re looking for a fun way to explore the island, this is the way to go! We rented a Jeep from Young’s Bike Shop, a family-owned business renting bikes, cars and jeeps to visitors since 1931. They pride themselves in offering convenience, competitive pricing, and an easy rental process to make things super straightforward. The pickup location is right within walking distance from the ferry so once you pop in to pick up your car, you’ll be on your way within minutes.

Beaches To Check Out on Nantucket

Brant Point Lighthouse

Brant Point Lighthouse is one of Nantucket’s most iconic landmarks and a highlight of any trip to the island. Located at the northeastern tip, just a short walk from downtown, this historic lighthouse has stood since 1746, making it one of the oldest in the United States. It continues to serve as a navigational aid for vessels entering Nantucket Harbor and is a beloved sight for those arriving by ferry.

The lighthouse’s classic architecture, the charming homes nearby, and the scenic coastal views all come together to create a setting that’s both peaceful and picturesque. Its close proximity to town, combined with the calm atmosphere and natural beauty, make Brant Point a perfect stop for a quiet moment or a quick photo session with a view.

Jetties Beach

Might be my favorite spot on island. Jetties Beach is a popular spot located on Nantucket with a beautiful stretch of sandy shoreline that offers stunning views of the ocean and is known for its calm waters and family-friendly atmosphere.

Jetties Beach provides various amenities and facilities including lifeguards on duty, restrooms, showers, and picnic areas. It’s also home to the famous Jetties Beach Bar & Restaurant, a beachside eatery that offers food, drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat or enjoy a refreshing beverage while enjoying the beach surroundings!

Steps Beach

One of the most magical beaches in Massachusetts. Located on the north shore of Nantucket Island off Cliff Road, is this hidden gem known for its breathtaking beauty.

True to its name, accessing the beach requires descending a series of steps that lead from the bluff to the sandy shoreline below. The journey down is totally worth it, as you’ll be rewarded with pristine stretches of soft sand, picturesque dunes, and captivating views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Steps Beach is about a 20 minute walk right off the ferry and is a must-see for your trip to the island.

Dionis Beach

Dionis Beach is a hidden gem on the north shore of Nantucket, known for its calm waters, soft sand, and peaceful atmosphere. Tucked away just a few miles from town, this beach feels secluded and quiet, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing day by the ocean. With fewer crowds than the island’s more popular beaches, Dionis is perfect for anyone looking to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of Nantucket.

It’s also where Bubs and I got engaged so it holds an extra special place in my heart.

The Whaling Museum

If you’re curious about the island’s rich maritime past, don’t skip the Whaling Museum. Operated by the Nantucket Historical Association, this beautifully curated museum offers everything from ship models and scrimshaw to a massive sperm whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling. It’s a fascinating look into how Nantucket became the whaling capital of the world and a great activity if you hit a rainy day.

Scenic Trail: The ‘Sconset Bluff Walk

One of the most famous and scenic hikes that was on my bucket list for a long time is none other than The ‘Sconset Bluff Walk. This quiet coastal path winds past rose-covered cottages, ocean cliffs, and ends with a view of the iconic Sankaty Head Lighthouse. It feels like a dream, but it’s totally real, and open to the public.

Start your stroll in the heart of Siasconset village, grab a treat from Sconset Market, and enjoy one of the most peaceful and photogenic spots on the island.

Where to Eat on Nantucket

Island dining is a mix of elegant seafood spots, casual bites, and local favorites. Here’s where to eat in Nantucket for a truly unforgettable foodie experience:

Bar Yoshi

My favorite restaurant on Nantucket! Bar Yoshi is a fabulous waterfront spot just a quick walk from the ferry with some of the most fresh and delicious sushi and small bites I’ve had. The drinks are unique, the food is full of flavor, the atmosphere is top notch, and the staff is exceptional. Highly recommend this place for a fancy meal on the best island.

Brotherhood of Thieves

This 1840s whaling bar & tavern is one of the coziest places on island with multiple floors, rustic interiors, fireplaces, and an expansive menu to choose from. The space is made up of 4 concepts with include Brotherhood of Thieves, Notch Whiskey Bar, Cisco Surf Bar, and the Beer Garden.

This is a beloved spot to locals and tourists alike and you’ll always find a busy and inviting atmosphere here. I loved the food, staff, and ambiance! It’s a must visit whether for a meal or a drink during your time on the island.

Sister Ship

If a restaurant could give main character energy, it would be Sister Ship on Nantucket. This restaurant located at Faraway Hotels is like a crossover between a luxury cruise ship and a White Lotus hotel.

Here you’ll find elevated cocktails, seafood-forward favorites, Mediterranean dishes & local ingredients. Everything was so fresh and delicious! It’s a fun fancy option and a unique experience between the food, cocktails, and atmosphere.

Black Eyed Susans

Tucked into the heart of Nantucket’s historic downtown, Black-Eyed Susan’s is a longtime island favorite known for its cozy atmosphere and thoughtfully crafted, seasonal dishes. The restaurant is set in a charming cottage, creating an intimate dining experience that feels both welcoming and special. We celebrated at our engagement here for dinner and brought our own wine since it’s BYOB!

The Juice Bar

You haven’t truly done Nantucket until you’ve waited in line for homemade ice cream at The Juice Bar. The waffle cone smell alone is reason enough to go and their ice cream is delicious!

Cisco Brewery

Cisco Brewery is must-visit for craft beer lovers and live music fans. Grab a lobster roll, a summer ale, and enjoy the laid-back crowd. And the best part, it’s dog-friendly!

Right in the heart of downtown you’ll find Four Winds Gifts, a family-owned business operating since 1970 with authentic Nantucket products. It’s the perfect place to visit for all your souvenir needs to bring home a piece of Nantucket with some of the most affordable prices.

They have everything like coasters, pillows, magnets, mugs, glassware, sweatshirts, and more! I grabbed some prints for my office, a mug, coasters, a comfy set, and a cute tote bag.

REMY Creations showcases a collection of clothing and accessories designed for both coastal relaxation and urban outings. Highlights include their signature cashmere SHARK sweaters, dresses suitable for beach days or dining out, jeans, and custom jewelry. REMY’s offerings cater to those looking for versatile fashion that transitions seamlessly from the farmer’s market to evening.

Many won’t agree that they are the same because of how hated the word “Influencer” (and the people behind it) is. But in my eyes, it is merely an adaptation of the same thing. A person or people who create online. And while we know that an influencer isn’t just a white girl with a tripod trying to sell you something, everyone continues to view it that way.

When a silly controversy started with a Nantucket business having a “No Influencers” quarterboard sign in their stunning and historic shop, I knew I wanted to weigh in. Not because I’m offended, but because it reached the internet and therefore, it goes way deeper.

I find that many who are defending the sign, especially those in the creator space themselves, either don’t take themselves seriously or haven’t been exposed to every side of this industry. And those who are amped up with fury and hatred are just being given permission to hate influencers even more for no damn reason.

This is the same old rhetoric, the same old story, the same nasty comments. As someone in the travel space who has built their own following on travel and experiences with overall highly positive content, I have still received some of the nastiest comments I’ve ever seen in my life. I can’t imagine the creators who deal with far worse.

This industry is one of the most interesting, innovative, and demanding to break into. For anyone who does it full-time, they will tell you how many hours, days, and years it took to get them where they are. And my God has it changed drastically over the last decade.

In order to be a content creator, you had to gain and maintain a following. Now? There are endless opportunities for literally any person who wants to do something for themselves. Whether it’s a creative outlet, a part-time gig, or a full-fledged business, you have the power right at your fingertips.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity right? Well, not when the industry is female-dominated and if you’re tired of hearing this and roll your eyes then I’m afraid you’re falling for it too. This could be a separate Substack all on its own, but what I will say is that even with the creator economy being made up of over 70% of women, men still get paid more and are taken more seriously. Women are more often referred to as influencers and men are referred to as content creators.

Paige Lorenze is facing far more scrutiny and criticism for one comment she made on a post while Dave Portnoy received far less for being the most obnoxious human being on the internet. Both have ties to Nantucket.

All this to say that at the end of the day I think we as a society have a major comprehension problem with innovation. I don’t say this lightly! There is a very small percentage of people that I know or have seen who truly understand the age in which we are in. People love to complain and blame their problems on other people. The internet is a frenzy of keyboard warriors projecting and spreading their hate in any way they can.

And when you add in “influencers” it becomes dangerous because that hatred is amplified and projected onto women. Just like men have been doing since the beginning of time. Women just want to feel safe and be able to express themselves without fearing for their life.

So yes, when you say is it really that serious? I nod and say absolutely the fuck it is.

I’m not going to pretend like this is something that can be fixed but what I do know is that when we keep people accountable, show respect and share nuance, we can change things.

Being an influencer has changed my entire life. I worked my ass off for years to have the life that I do and I am in a position where I have the most freedom and flexibility. I have worked with dream brands, I’ve met incredible small business owners, I’ve sold rooms, vacation homes, meals, and experiences all from sharing it on my platform. I’ve connected with my audience on deep levels, laughed from their messages, and have taken their advice. I feel so in love with life that I want to spread it to others every day. I literally have used my platform to tell others YOU CAN DO THIS TOO. The Creator Economy is open to everyone.

One of the main reasons why people hate influencers so much other than the false idea that they are “ruining places” is that they are too scared to do something of their own. Whatever that looks like to them. A career, a hobby, a business, a move, a skill, etc. Anyone who is actually happy and confident in their own lives would never take their time to write something hateful online to someone they don’t know. And the saddest part is how many of these people there are.

My biggest prediction in the next 10-20 years is that eventually, everyone will own something online. Or have a personal brand. I say this to everyone. And I know how many people will wish they started sooner. I say this to myself now, as someone fully in it for 6 years.

To end this, I want to thank anyone who supports me, supports creators, understands nuance in a space like this and simply doesn’t follow people they don’t like. I will never understand this piece. If you don’t like someone and what they are doing, just don’t follow them.

In a world where there is so much scrutiny, hate, and judgement, I choose to be someone who lifts people up. I hope you do too.

The reason spring is especially difficult for me is because it reminds me of hard times. Aprils of the past haven’t treated me very well and for some reason I can’t shake the feeling of sadness every time it rolls around. Especially feelings of grief. However, this year felt different. We’re in a new town, new home, are making new friends, and have so much to look forward to. A much needed new chapter.

Our Never-Ending House Projects

The most exciting part of home ownership has been the craft of making a house a home. I’m not the most hands-on person when it comes to crafts and projects, so thank goodness for my fiancé, who somehow happens to be good at everything he tries on the first attempt.

My favorite project so far. It completely transforms the living room. We tested different color stains and are going with the middle shade to match our coffee table and dining room table.

Busy Season Is Busy-ing

And just like clock-work, I am swamped with work. I basically have nothing going on from January to mid-April and then it’s a frenzy of client and collaboration inquiries. It’s pretty much been this way since I started freelancing in 2020, but it didn’t really hit me until this year that this is my business reality. And it’s been a huge relief because now I can fully rest and enjoy my winters without feeling useless that I have nothing going on and hopeless because my business is going up in flames.

When you work for yourself, it’s feast or famine. So when you’re in the thick of business you really have to give it all you got because you have to prepare for the slow months. It’s stressful, it’s overwhelming, I stretch myself too thin and at the same time, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Wedding Planning Updates Because Everyone Keeps Asking

Oh boy do I have updates for you! What went from “Oh, we will just do something small and intimate”, turned into a full-fledged wedding reception. Hosting our ceremony in private has been a priority since day 1, but we were always flexible on having a party to celebrate with friends and family. And now that’s a reality. I can’t believe it.

I don’t want to give too much away because I want to protect our privacy but will be sharing everything after. But to give you a hint, it’s every coastal lover’s dream venue. And it will have you saying “of course she’s getting married there.”

And then lastly and predictably, coastal living is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am just obsessed with where we live every single day. Rockport, Massachusetts

This is the number one place I recommend people visit when they are going to Boston and want to go somewhere outside the city. It’s simply stunning. Rockport, Massachusetts can get pretty crowded in the summer due to its popularity, so spring is a great opportunity to avoid the crowds.

Rockport is within the Cape Ann peninsula and is known for its stunning coastal scenery, vibrant arts community, and historic fishing heritage. One of its most iconic landmarks is Motif No. 1, a red fishing shack that has become a symbol of New England’s maritime culture and a favorite subject for artists. It’s also where a famous scene from the movie The Proposal was filmed featuring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds!

A trip to Rockport isn’t complete without seeing Motif No. 1, the town’s most famous landmark. This bright red fishing shack on Bradley Wharf is said to be the most painted building in America! A true New England icon, beautiful in all seasons.

Go Whale Watching

Spring is an excellent time for whale watching, as migrating humpbacks, finbacks, and minkes return to the waters off Cape Ann. Book a tour with 7 Seas Whale Watch or Captain Bill & Sons Whale Watch in nearby Gloucester for an amazing marine adventure.

Go Kayaking

Paddle along Rockport’s scenic coastline for a peaceful and picturesque way to explore the area. Rent a kayak from North Shore Kayak Outdoor Center and venture into the quiet coves and harbors, taking in stunning views of the rocky shoreline and marine life.

Visit Front Beach

For a relaxing beach day, head to Front Beach, a small yet beautiful sandy retreat perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze. Located just steps from downtown, this beach is ideal for families and offers gorgeous sunrise views.

Hike at Halibut Point

One of my favorite places to visit every time I’m in Rockport. Outdoor lovers will appreciate Halibut Point State Park, where rugged coastal trails wind through an old granite quarry, leading to panoramic ocean views. On a clear day, you can even see all the way to Mount Agamenticus in Maine and the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast.

Stay at Addison Choate Hotel

Addison Choate is a classy, intimate, coastal New England experience with all the luxuries you need from plush king beds, marble-covered bathrooms, comfortable robes and bed in breakfast. I don’t believe a stay to Rockport is complete without staying here as the reputation, hospitality and proximity are truly unmatched!

Burlington, Vermont

What a special place. Burlington, Vermont is one of those overlooked towns in New England but happens to be one of the liveliest places. It’s also in my top foodie spots as it has some of the best cuisine I’ve had. We came here during a warm spring weekend and it was so much fun between the outdoor scene, downtown shops, restaurants and breweries.

Burlington is best known for its vibrant arts scene, outdoor recreation, and stunning location on the shores of Lake Champlain. As Vermont’s largest city, it offers a mix of history with modern culture, along the bustling Church Street Marketplace. This pedestrian-only street is lined with local boutiques, farm-to-table restaurants, and live street performances. Burlington offers so much to do outdoors including biking along the Burlington Greenway, kayaking on the lake, and exploring nearby hiking trails in the Green Mountains.

The city is also home to the University of Vermont, adding a youthful energy and a commitment to sustainability. Known for its craft beer culture, Burlington has legendary breweries like Foam Brewers and The Alchemist, making it a top destination for beer lovers! We love breweries because we can always take our golden retriever, Morgan with us.

A place I wish I could spend so much more time in! Spring is a great season to explore Newport, RI, as the city awakens with vibrant colors and pleasant coastal breezes. The iconic Gilded Age mansions, including The Breakers and Marble House, are less crowded, allowing you to fully appreciate the architectural grandeur and lush gardens in bloom. Outdoor lovers can take advantage of ideal temperatures for strolling the famous Cliff Walk, a scenic 3.5-mile trail that showcases Newport’s dramatic coastline and historic estates. Spring also marks the start of Newport’s sailing season, filling the harbor with energy as boats set sail against the backdrop of stunning ocean views.

Newport is home to several beautiful beaches in close proximity to each other, including Easton’s Beach and Gooseberry Beach.

Famous for its Gilded Age mansions, Newport is also home to the summer homes for some of America’s wealthiest families including The Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff.

Scenic Cliff Walk

This 3.5-mile public walkway combines the natural beauty of the coastline with the architectural history of Newport’s famous mansions. It’s a perfect place for a stroll with amazing ocean views!

Festivals and Events

Summer in Newport is packed with events like the Newport Oyster & Chowder Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, and the Newport International Boat Show. I attended the Oyster & Chowder Festival this year and it did not disappoint with fresh oysters, craft cocktails, and live music.

Delicious Seafood

Charming Downtown

The downtown area is full of boutique shops, art galleries, cafes, and historic buildings. Thames Street, in particular, is vibrant and perfect for a leisurely day of shopping and dining.

Hotel Viking

Staying at the historic Hotel Viking adds a touch of luxury and elegance to any Newport visit. It was my second time here and I felt right at home! The hotel opened in 1926 and is located on Bellevue Avenue, a close walk to downtown. Here you can enjoy the rooftop bar with stunning views, an award-winning spa, and fine dining at One Bellevue.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Ahh, my happy place. Spring is the perfect time to visit Cape Cod, offering a peaceful escape before the summer crowds arrive. With mild temperatures, blooming flowers, and stunning coastal views, this season is ideal for exploring charming seaside towns like Chatham, Provincetown, and Hyannis. Here you can enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants, take scenic bike rides along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, or stroll along quiet beaches to spot migrating shorebirds. Spring also brings seasonal events, from whale watching tours to art festivals, making it a vibrant time to experience the Cape’s natural beauty and rich culture.

No lie, one of the best bagels I’ve had in Massachusetts. Cape Cod Bagel is known for its freshly baked bagels, homemade cream cheese, and rich coffee. It’s a must-visit down the Cape!

Chatham Pier Fish Market

For some of the freshest seafood on the Cape, stop by Chatham Pier Fish Market, where you can watch local fishermen unload their daily catch. As part of an influencer trip, I got a behind-the-scenes tour of the market and learned so much about the process and freshness of Massahcusetts lobsters. It’s truly one of the best places to grab seafood with lobster rolls, fried clams, or clam chowder, all while taking in the picturesque harbor views.

The Knob

LOVE it here and have visited in all seasons. If you’re looking for a scenic nature walk, The Knob is a must-visit. This short but rewarding trail leads to breathtaking panoramic views of Buzzards Bay, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful escape or a sunset picnic. The trail is surrounded by lush coastal greenery, creating a picture-perfect Cape Cod experience.

Grays Beach

One of Cape Cod’s most stunning natural spots, Grays Beach features an iconic boardwalk that stretches over the salt marshes, offering spectacular views at sunrise and sunset. It’s a great place for a peaceful stroll, birdwatching, or capturing beautiful photos of the ever-changing coastal landscape.

Downtown Chatham

Charming and full of classic New England character, Downtown Chatham is a great place to wander through boutique shops, art galleries, and cafés. Grab an ice cream, browse unique coastal-inspired gifts, or simply soak in the quaint atmosphere of one of the Cape’s most picturesque towns.

After long days, fast food, frustration, and disappointment, I’m finally home. And you know what? I’m still thinking about where I want to fly to next. All thanks to my annoyingly optimistic mindset and ability to be patient. Being stuck at the airport means I can catch up on emails, pitch brands, dive into client work, listen to podcasts and read books. Being mad about something I can’t control has never served me in the past. I’m patient so I can continue to experience life on my terms.

Patience isn’t just the key driver to my success and happiness in life, but the main pillar of the past 6 years of entrepreneurship. You have to have an insane amount of patience to work for yourself and make ends meet. It is the very reason why so many don’t pursue the things they want to because they want success immediately.

If you want true success and happiness in life, patience needs to be your best friend. Be patient when things don’t go your way. Be patient when you’re waiting for it to be your turn. Be patient after 100 failures. Be patient with family members. Be patient with friends.

Be patient with yourself. The life you’re building isn’t meant to happen overnight.

I started reflecting on this notion that we as humans just constantly compare ourselves to others and deem ourselves unworthy of attention. The fear of being negatively perceived or judged is what often stops us from sharing our thoughts and opinions. This goes well beyond being a content creator online.

In a world where we must have strong opinions one way or another, it’s become impossible to feel comfortable showing up as is. Like if we don’t match the energy or outrage of others, we are categorized as being one way. And yes, I’m talking about politics. I used to love talking about politics, humanity, and uncomfortable conversations and now it’s become a competition to who can have the hottest take or who is a better person than the other. It’s no longer about problem solving but rather, who is right.

Politics aside, I think the world is craving more connection than ever and it’s always been a goal of mine to share my thoughts, positivity and optimism. I think humans will always deal with humility but I believe the outcome should be greater than the fear. So when you have thoughts, topics, or ideas you want to share with others, you should share them because it could change someone’s life.

There are endless ways to leave legacies in our world. It used to be through books, teaching, speeches, and awards. Now, it can be from the device in your hands.

My Story

With that said, I’ll start with a little background for you. It’s the evening of March 7, 2020 and I just received an email from our Office Coordinator that we will be working from home until further notice. I was excited to be receiving a WFH day on a Friday but what I didn’t realize was how serious the pandemic was or that it would be the last day I would ever step foot in an office.

Weeks and months went by with my boyfriend (at the time, now fiancé) and I working from home in our tiny Northern California apartment, not really knowing what the future holds. As for my job, that changed drastically. I was an Events Specialist for Boston Consulting Group and with the nature of events, everything for the year was canceled. I had a really hard time with the adjustment and was more homesick than usual.

We knew it was time to make our way back home to the east coast. It had been almost 4 years since moving from New York to California and I was ready to have my friends and family regularly back in my life again. That’s when I applied for a Social Media Specialist position at BCG in the Boston office. Since my fiancé is from Massachusetts, we decided to make the move to New England and start a new chapter in our lives.

As a reputable employee of BCG, I was almost certain I would be hired for this new role with a pay increase and would be on my happy way to Boston working in a city I always wanted to spend more time in. Only, I didn’t get the role. After 4 interviews and weeks of waiting, I was told they went with a candidate who had more experience in corporate social media and advertising. Honestly, I didn’t blame them because I was only just brushing the surface of corporate social media and mostly had experience with my personal account. That didn’t stop me from crying hysterically because I was told no from a company I loved.

Regardless, I still had my current role even though it was remote and was told I could continue working for them when I moved back home. This is the best case scenario, right? So I thought, until they decided to give select employees options. For those of us whose role had changed, we had the option to stay in our roles and/or take on new tasks and responsibilities OR start a new journey. Meaning, take a severance package and leave the company. I’ve always been a bit of a risk taker, so with some thought and talking to loved ones, I made the decision to leave.

It was a difficult one and it was even harder knowing that I wouldn’t be able to say goodbye to all my co-workers who I worked with for years since I was moving during the pandemic. But, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made and I don’t have an ounce of regret. Since quitting my 9-5 I’ve worked with hundreds of small businesses, hotels, tourism boards, and brands, and have traveled more than I ever have in my life. I may have thrived as a corporate baddie, but I’m truly living as a freelance girly.

If you’re interested and craving the lifestyle of working for yourself, I have a few tips and takeaways for you.

Evaluate why you want to work for yourself.

This is the most important step. In a world full of somewhat problematic phrases like “quit your job” and “life is too short,” you want to make sure that quitting your 9-5 job is for the right reasons. Are you craving entrepreneurship or are you just unhappy in your current role? Are you a creative and innovative person or do you prefer structure and resources? Are you adaptable and quick on your feet or do you not like change and prefer routine? Are you okay with varying months of income or do you prefer a steady paycheck? These, among many other questions, are what you should be asking yourself. Because there would be nothing scarier than quitting your job for the wrong reasons.

Determine what you want long-term.

For me, time, flexibility, and uncapped income are at the top of my list. Being able to gain time back, choose my own schedule, and make as much money as possible, has always been a priority. Despite how nice this all sounds, it takes years to build a reputation and actually make real money. That’s why entrepreneurship is so hard. There is no instant gratification and absolutely no promises. Just long hours, hustling, pivoting, finding balance, and climbing (for years) to get there. I have had terrible months and I have had months where I doubled my income that I used to make in a month at my old job. A trusted and admired BCG partner told me when I was leaving the company, “the highs will be high and the lows will be low.” He was right.

Consider your financial situation and goals.

You simply cannot quit your 9-5 without financial stability and then some. If you’re ready to go all in, whether you have a side hustle, a business, or want to take your current skills with you to freelance, you must have a cushion of savings to get you through the beginning. I’ve read that 6 months of living expenses should be saved, but I would argue a year’s worth of living expenses. There is nothing worse than feeling financially strapped, especially when taking a risk.

Because of my savings, severance package, and dual-income with my partner, the decision came a lot easier. Make sure your financial decision is a smart one.

Acknowledge what you’re good at and what you’re not good at.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to freelancing. There’s hundreds of ways to make money online or freelancing including copywriting, graphic design, website building, social media management, affiliate marketing, sales, photography, consulting, etc. While there are always people hiring for these roles, it’s so important to lean into the skills you are best at and can maintain overtime. Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should.

Don’t chase perfectionism.

Entrepreneurship is…messy. If you chase the perfect business plan, perfect brand, perfect aesthetic, you’ll obsess over the wrong details and get burnt out quickly. Instead, focus on the main ingredients that sets you apart from others, why people should hire you, and make sure every interaction with potential employers is a positive one.

Use social media to promote your services.

Not everyone agrees, but as a social media influencer, having a social presence is a must, regardless of your niche or industry. Social media is the way consumers interact with services and products in the most modern form and it is only going to get bigger from here. There isn’t a set number of platforms you need to be on but I suggest choosing the platforms where your audience and demographic hangout and try to be on as many that are sustainable for your life and schedule.

When it comes to choosing what content to put out there, it’s best to stick to 3-5 main topics that you’ll cover for your audience so they know what to expect from you. There are many other factors to consider like branding, colors, content buckets, consistency, analytics, and more, but that’s for another article perhaps.

Get on the right platforms to find work.

This is KEY for being successful as a freelancer. Depending on your expertise, you’ll want to explore several platforms and get your name, experience, and offerings out there. While there are so many platforms to consider, networking online or in your local community is the best place to start. I’ve been offered some of my best opportunities by networking and building relationships in the New England community. The age old saying “It’s about who you know” really rings true in any generation. Put yourself out there and meet whoever there is to meet. You never know where the relationship will take you.

Focus on multiple streams of income.

This is the best advice for anyone, whether corporate or freelance. Having multiple streams of income not only provides stability and cushion but allows you to fall back on different outlets when one isn’t doing as well or falls through. This is especially helpful in the freelance world when jobs and projects aren’t always guaranteed long-term.

Here are some examples of multiple streams of income:

• Website Development

• Social Media Management

• Email Marketing Management

• Content Creation

• Affiliate Marketing

• Amazon Seller

These are just some of the industries I have experience with, but there are hundreds of more ways to make some extra cash.

Don’t take on more than you can handle.

When you run your own business and schedule, it can be hard to say no, especially when you have a few tight months. I’ve been there and have done what I needed to, but it led to severe burnout and resentment to myself because I took on way too much. My suggestion is to decide how many hours you want to work a week and build your schedule around that.

Charge more, work less.

In order to prevent burnout and actually sustain a life that is healthy and meaningful, you’ll need to figure out how to charge more for your services and work less. This is the beauty of freelance work because you ultimately choose how much or how little you want to make. Of course, this relies on many factors and will sometimes take years to build a portfolio and reputation in your industry, but the payoff is worth it in the end. ALWAYS know that you are worthy of sustainable income. This is especially important for women to remember because finance conversations weren’t a top priority for most of us growing up.

Be an innovator and adapter of change.

This is a non-negotiable. You must always assume that your businesses model, opportunities, and social media algorithm are going to change. This fits into the “never get comfortable” mentality because if you do, it’ll be a constant losing battle with yourself. I am a longtime lover and supporter of , who preaches being obsessed with losing. If you really want to stay winning, you have to change your mindset and be embrace the realities of the world of business.

Make your business a lifestyle.

This sounds so toxic, but what I mean is that if you really want this lifestyle, it needs to be a part of you. For a while, you will need to hustle hard and put in the work to achieve your goals. The reason why most people don’t work for themselves, or put themselves out there, or try to build an audience online, is because of the amount of work it actually takes to get there with very little in return. Being an entrepreneur, a freelancer, an influencer, etc. is not about short-term gratification. It’s about the long term. And I can tell you with every ounce of my soul that it’s worth it.

Is it worth it for you?

If someone told me 10 years I’d be in the position I am now, I would actually believe them.

I’ve never been a person who relies on luck or fate to determine the course of my life. From a young age, I felt that life is truly what you make it and the things you want are yours as long as you go after them.

I remember putting in my notice at my corporate job in 2020 and the HR manager saying this feels very, “following your dreams.” She was right.

Here’s what building a dream life in coastal New England actually looks like:

It looks like finding the cutest small town and community.

After a year of researching neighborhoods, weighing pros and cons, and gazing at houses we can’t afford, we knew we had 2 choices. Either head out to Western Mass to get more bang for our buck OR buy something smaller on the south shore, a place we’ve grown to love. It was a no brainer. And just a year later, we moved into the cutest new-build townhouse in a charming coastal town in Massachusetts.

I guess they were right when they said “location, location, location.” We couldn’t be happier with where we are and know we will stay for a long time. Between the beachy culture, local history, bars & restaurants, outdoor scene, and proximity to so many great surrounding areas, we’ve never felt more at home.

It looks like spending the most money I ever have in my life.

It’s all fun and games until it’s time to put money down and commit to a mortgage. And then once that’s all said and done, you have to actually furnish and decorate your home. Sheesh! Can’t I catch a break? Well, yes actually. Thankfully, I am doing this all with my fiancé who has lessened this burden in more ways than one.

Despite the costs and expenses of owning a home, we are happy, proud, and determined to live a life on our own terms. Furniture will be purchased within time, projects will be tackled periodically, and decor will be introduced over the years. Slow and steady wins the race here.

It looks like slower living, cozy routines and quiet moments on the beach.

I have always been a city girl. I never had the opportunity to live in a city but I always worked in them. The culture, energy and vibrance of a city compares to none and I will always be grateful for the experiences I had and will continue to have.

However, as a 30-something, I was craving a slower, more grounded life more than ever. Struggling with generalized anxiety most of my life, there have been some pretty big defining moments for me that made me realize what I want longterm. As much as I love travel, experiences, and being on the go, nothing fills my cup more than slow movement, cozy routines, and walks on the beach. Having these 3 things regularly has already been life-changing.

It looks like freedom and flexibility, coastal-version.

If you ask me what’s most important to me in my career, it will never be the money, although super important too. It will always be freedom and flexibility. I feel rich in life ever since quitting my corporate job because I’ve been introduced to a lifestyle I never knew before. A life where I wake up slowly, start work when I want to, meet friends in the middle of the day, take calls from my parents at any time, and overall have the ability to choose what every day looks like. That’s priceless.

It looks like intentional travel while building a home life.

You’ll always catch me scoping out New England spots and gems, but not at the level that I used to. No, you’ll see me saying no to hotel stays and yes to cozy nights at home. I’ll be honest, it’s been a tough balance this past year but between setting boundaries and staying intentional with local and domestic travel, I’ve been able to create a travel schedule that works for me.

It looks like romanticizing every season.

How lucky are we to live in a world with seasons and even luckier to live in a place where they are all so drastically different. I love the anticipation of every season, the rituals and nostalgia that comes along with them, but mostly, living out our dreams as New Englanders. I’ve lived in a lot of places but as of now and hopefully forever, It’s New England or nowhere.

We chase careers, relationships, milestones, and expectations, often without stopping to ask what kind of life we actually want to build.

For me, that question eventually led me somewhere unexpected: coastal Massachusetts.

Hi, I’m Jess, a South Shore–based content creator who is currently navigating life as a 30-something in coastal Massachusetts. As someone who is chronically online, I wanted a new platform to explore, but more importantly, a place to share long-form content. I debated starting a YouTube channel for over a year, but I knew I would never be able to sustain a platform like that. Between the editing, the impossible algorithm, and receiving very little in return, I knew it would cause more stress than joy.

Writing, however, is a different story. I had always been a writer throughout my childhood and in school. I would get so embarrassed when teachers would make me read my essays out loud, but then I had people telling me how good they were or how they made them feel something. And it is the very reason I have an online presence today.

Before apps and AI, there were blogs. I started blogging in 2014, and it was the first investment I ever made in myself. A website to call my own. I even had my first piece of content go viral, a blog on my college town, with over 30,000 views and thousands of comments from all over the world. “Wow,” I thought. “Look at the impact we can have from our devices.”

And so that sealed the deal for me. Being able to share what you love and what you’re good at with others is a gift I will never take for granted.

My hope is for this page to become one of comfort. I want to share all the ups and downs of adulthood while sharing the life I’m building in a place I love. Moving to coastal Massachusetts is one of the best decisions I’ve made, and I’m on a mission to convince everyone to live out their dreams, whatever that looks like for you.
