Jet is lucid but inhabits the body of an unfamiliar prisoner. To me, that creates a productive split between identity and role. The dream never supplies a courtroom explanation. It asks a sharper question about whether an imposed identity must remain authoritative once consciousness recognizes it as a role.

The metallic exoskeleton is the dream’s most paradoxical symbol. It makes the prisoner stronger and more durable, yet it was issued to make him a more efficient laborer. He punches stone with his bare hands so that rare ore can be collected for the prison. The institution has empowered him, but only conditionally and for extraction. That resembles any tool, responsibility, or talent that expands what a person can do while binding that expansion to somebody else’s purpose. The warden’s trust is not freedom; it is calculated permission. The prison believes the harness belongs to its system even while the prisoner is wearing it.

Jet turns the borrowed power toward escape, and the dream immediately distinguishes strength from invulnerability. The harness produces a nearly superhuman sprint, but it cannot stop the warden’s bullet. This is an important correction inside the fantasy: competence can help someone resist a system without making consequences unreal. The dream allows the escape attempt to fail at the level the prison understands. Metal, muscle, speed, and durability remain inside its rules, so the warden can still answer them with superior force.

Resurrection changes the grammar of the conflict. Jet does not survive because the prison’s equipment was secretly better than expected. He reaches inward and channels the Rainbow Crystal Sword of Life through his chest, separating his soul from the dying body and drawing it back. In symbolic terms, the decisive power comes from an identity and continuity deeper than the role of prisoner. The harness amplifies the body the institution can exploit; the Life Sword protects the self the institution cannot define. When the warden panics, he is confronting not merely a stronger inmate but a person whose source of agency lies outside the warden’s explanation.

The turret represents the system escalating after personal authority fails. Jet answers it with a crystal shield rather than another race, then combines inner dream power with the exoskeleton for one enormous leap. I love that synthesis. The tool of coerced labor is not discarded; its meaning is reclaimed. The harness supplies force, the shield preserves life, and lucidity supplies direction. Together they carry him beyond the prison’s range and into the evergreen forest. My reading is that the dream imagines freedom not as becoming infinitely powerful, but as remembering which powers were assigned to you, which powers genuinely belong to you, and when both can be redirected toward a life the old system can no longer reach.

The Golden Axe and the Bear Without a Job

Lost in an enchanted forest, a traveler nearly stepped backward off a cliff before a talking bear warned her in time. Though frightened at first, she realized the bear was kind and followed him to a magic-item shop, where he hoped to buy honey. The shopkeeper feared bears and had none to sell because a bog witch had stolen every beehive in the forest and transformed the bear’s friend Jerry into a frog. The traveler promised to confront the witch, but the shopkeeper demanded four gold pieces for a protective magic item, and she possessed only two. Searching for another solution, the traveler and the bear met a river spirit who gave them a golden axe. Neither of them knew its power, but they carried it toward the witch’s hut.

A ring of quicksand surrounded the hut, and when the traveler attempted to leap across it, she dropped the axe and sank beneath the mud. The bear tried to rescue her, but both fell into the witch’s underground chamber, where the stolen beehives were kept. When the bees attacked, the bear distracted them so the traveler could confront the witch, who blocked the only exit and summoned the authorities. Cornered, the traveler grabbed the golden axe—and it teleported her and the bear to Las Vegas. The frightened city sent a tank against them, and the bear leaped in front of the traveler when it fired. Mortally wounded, he asked only whether they had saved the honey and found Jerry. Desperate to save him, the traveler pressed the axe against his chest and commanded it to take them somewhere safe. Instead, the axe transported itself and the bear’s heart back to the magic shop, where the shopkeeper understood that the weapon carried unfinished debts to the place where they could be resolved. Regretting how he had treated them, he sacrificed his most valuable treasure, the Thread of Returning, to send the bear’s heart back and restore him to life.

The traveler and the revived bear returned to the shop, where the shopkeeper offered the bear an honest job selling honey. Together, they went back to the bog with the golden axe, a charm that prevented transformations, and the river spirit as their witness. Surrounded by the bees she had imprisoned, the witch surrendered, returned every hive, and reversed her spells until Jerry finally became a bear again. The shop reopened as Magic Items, Potions, Sundries, and Ethically Sourced Honey. The bear managed the honey, Jerry hosted mahjong games, and the shopkeeper never again judged a customer by appearances. The traveler kept the golden axe, which sometimes carried her where she intended to go and sometimes where she was most needed. From then on, she understood its true lesson: the greatest magic was not escaping danger, but recognizing where a heart belonged—and helping it find its way home.

Lightning Lord and the Serpent Spark

Rain had washed York York clean sometime before dawn.

By midmorning, the city was already dirty again.

Steam rolled from vents between towers of brick, glass, and oxidized copper. Elevated trains screamed around sharp bends above six lanes of impatient traffic. Giant animated billboards crawled across the faces of buildings, competing with decades-old neon signs that nobody had bothered to take down. York York had always seemed to Lightning Lord like a city incapable of deciding what century it wanted to live in.

That was probably why magic fit into it so comfortably.

He stood at the edge of a balcony suspended several stories above a room that should not have fit inside the building containing it.

Mage Manor was like that.

From the outside, the home of the Magic Mistress appeared to be an elegant but relatively narrow stone mansion overlooking the distant York York skyline. Its architecture favored sweeping curves rather than gothic spires, with pearlescent walls broken by windows of smoky violet glass.

Inside, geometry became a suggestion.

The room beneath Lightning Lord was at least the size of a train station. Floating platforms drifted lazily through an open shaft filled with hundreds of luminous ribbons, each ribbon bearing symbols that rearranged themselves whenever he tried to focus on them. Doorways rotated through the walls without any visible mechanism. One opened briefly onto a moonlit beach before disappearing behind polished stone.

Another appeared to contain an entire library built upside down.

Lightning Lord rubbed the back of his neck.

“Okay,” he said. “I officially have no idea how big your house is.”

Behind him, the Magic Mistress smiled.

“That depends on the day.”

Unlike the stage-magician aesthetic outsiders sometimes expected from someone with her title, there was nothing theatrical about her clothing.

The Magic Mistress wore layered robes cut more like futuristic formalwear than ancient ceremonial garments. A sleeveless midnight-blue coat fell nearly to her ankles, its fabric shifting subtly between matte black and deep indigo as she moved. Thin geometric patterns of silver thread traveled across the garment like incomplete constellations.

Beneath it, she wore a fitted plum-colored tunic and flexible black trousers tucked into flat-soled boots.

Her most unusual accessory was a series of small metallic rings floating around her wrists without touching them.

Each ring was engraved with hundreds of characters from dead magical languages.

Lightning Lord had learned very quickly that when those rings started spinning, something impossible was usually about to happen.

His own appearance belonged to an entirely different world.

His charcoal jacket was cropped short enough to stay clear of the equipment strapped to his waist. Thin copper conductive lines traced the seams, feeding into compact capacitors hidden beneath reinforced shoulder panels. His shirt was pale gray, his trousers dark navy, and a pair of insulated gloves hung from his belt.

There was no cape.

No armor.

No glowing emblem announcing exactly what he could do.

The most distinctive part of his outfit was the circular device mounted between his shoulder blades—a collapsible metallic disc roughly the width of a dinner plate.

It looked unimpressive.

That was intentional.

Lightning Lord preferred equipment that didn’t advertise itself.

The Magic Mistress stepped closer.

“So,” she said. “Ready?”

Lightning Lord looked at the rings circling her wrists.

“As I’m ever going to be.”

The rings began to rotate.

One clockwise.

One counterclockwise.

A third tilted vertically and spun between them.

The Magic Mistress raised her hands toward Lightning Lord without touching him.

The air changed.

It wasn’t electricity.

He knew electricity.

Electricity had texture. Pressure. Direction.

This felt like standing beside an open door in a house that had previously contained no door at all.

Soft violet patterns appeared around his body.

One passed through his chest.

Another swept through his skull.

Lightning Lord resisted the instinct to step backward.

The Magic Mistress studied him.

Her expression tightened.

Then relaxed.

The floating symbols disappeared.

“Well?” Lightning Lord asked.

“I don’t sense any magic in you.”

He blinked.

“None?”

“Nothing I’d call magic.”

Lightning Lord looked down at his hands.

For a moment, thin blue-white threads of electricity crawled between his fingers.

Years ago, Burst Serum had transformed Duke City.

The catastrophe had begun with a chemical release and ended with hundreds of people developing impossible abilities.

Some could liquefy their bodies.

Some grew crystalline structures from their skin.

Others manipulated heat, gravity, sound, metal, or stranger things that still resisted classification.

Lightning Lord had gained electrokinesis.

He could generate electrical current, manipulate electromagnetic fields, drain energy from powered devices, and use conductive surfaces in ways that occasionally made electrical engineers very angry.

Everything about his abilities had seemed biological.

Scientific.

At least in theory.

“So that’s it?” he asked. “Burst Serum isn’t magical?”

The Magic Mistress shook her head.

“I said you aren’t magical.”

Lightning Lord looked up.

She continued.

“That tells us what happened to you. It doesn’t necessarily tell us everything the substance is capable of doing.”

His disappointment vanished immediately.

“So we’d need an uncontaminated sample.”

“Preferably.”

Lightning Lord sighed.

“That’s the problem.”

Most surviving Burst Serum was already inside somebody.

The original Duke City stockpiles had been confiscated, destroyed, stolen, diluted, sold, lost, or classified behind so many layers of corporate secrecy that even Lightning Lord wasn’t sure which samples still existed.

But he knew one company likely had some.

PowerCore.

Lightning Lord paced toward the balcony.

“PowerCore maintained research facilities in Duke City after the incident. Their headquarters there is practically a fortress now. Too many people blame them for what happened.”

“I assume you aren’t suggesting we assault a fortress.”

“No.”

He turned toward her.

“But PowerCore has a smaller laboratory here in York York.”

The Magic Mistress raised an eyebrow.

Lightning Lord smiled.

“And since I happen to be standing beside someone who apparently keeps several hundred rooms inside a building that has maybe forty windows…”

“You’re wondering whether I can shorten the commute.”

“I was trying to find a polite way to ask.”

“You could have just asked.”

“Can you magically transport us to PowerCore?”

The Magic Mistress extended one hand.

The rings around her wrists accelerated.

“Hold on.”

“To what?”

Reality folded.

Lightning Lord’s stomach remained somewhere inside Mage Manor for approximately half a second after the rest of him arrived outside PowerCore.

He staggered sideways.

The Magic Mistress caught his arm.

“You get used to it.”

“I don’t think I want to.”

They had appeared beneath an elevated maglev rail several blocks from the PowerCore research center.

Lightning Lord immediately understood why the facility received less attention than its Duke City counterpart.

It barely looked important.

PowerCore had converted an old telecommunications complex into a narrow research campus wedged between a parking structure and an abandoned department store. Three interconnected rectangular buildings surrounded a central courtyard.

The company’s usual branding—white circles split by a vertical crimson line—appeared only once above the entrance.

Nothing screamed secret superhuman chemical research conducted here.

Lightning Lord appreciated subtlety.

Then he noticed the shattered security door.

His expression changed.

“You seeing that?”

The Magic Mistress was already looking toward it.

The reinforced glass hadn’t been broken inward.

Someone had torn the entire locking assembly from its housing.

Metal curled around the opening like peeled fruit skin.

Lightning Lord approached carefully.

A security camera hung from its mount above the door.

No bullet hole.

No shattered lens.

Its internal electronics had simply been crushed.

“That’s not random vandalism,” he said.

“No.”

Lightning Lord crouched near the damaged lock.

There were footprints in the wet concrete.

Heavy ones.

Several people.

The Magic Mistress glanced toward the dark interior.

“PowerCore should have security.”

“Exactly.”

No alarms.

No guards.

No scientists fleeing the scene.

That bothered him more than sirens would have.

Lightning Lord straightened.

“We came for a sample.”

The Magic Mistress stepped through the ruined doorway.

“Looks like someone beat us to it.”

Inside, emergency lights painted the hallway amber.

Laboratory doors stood open.

Cabinets had been overturned.

A glass partition bore the impact crater of something approximately human-sized.

Lightning Lord touched two fingers to the wall.

A faint electrical pulse spread outward.

He closed his eyes.

The building became a map of current.

Backup generators.

Security circuits.

Damaged lights.

Computers.

Elevators.

A handful of emergency systems.

And movement.

“There are people ahead.”

“Employees?”

“Can’t tell.”

Lightning Lord opened his eyes.

“But whoever they are, they’re carrying powered equipment.”

The Magic Mistress glanced at him.

“That precise?”

“Electricity gets chatty when you know how to listen.”

They continued.

Around the next corner, they found the first unconscious security guard.

Alive.

Breathing.

Another lay near a broken desk.

No obvious wounds beyond bruising.

Lightning Lord exhaled.

“Whoever did this could’ve killed them.”

“But didn’t.”

“Maybe.”

They moved deeper into the laboratory.

Eventually, faint voices reached them.

Lightning Lord raised one hand.

The Magic Mistress stopped.

They approached a doorway leading onto an elevated observation platform overlooking a large chemical storage room.

Below them stood five men.

Their clothing immediately caught the Magic Mistress’s attention.

“Bulk Brute.”

Lightning Lord glanced toward her.

“You recognize them?”

“Their gear.”

The men didn’t wear uniforms so much as pieces of industrial machinery converted into clothing.

Heavy gray trousers.

Steel-toed boots.

Sleeveless impact vests reinforced with thick ceramic plates.

Their faces were covered by angular respirator masks whose segmented filters created blunt, almost bulldog-like silhouettes.

Most distinctive were the mechanical harnesses fitted across their backs.

Each harness contained transparent tubing connected to a central cylindrical reservoir filled with an iridescent green fluid.

Lightning Lord whispered.

“Viper.”

The Magic Mistress nodded.

Bulk Brute’s organization had spent years distributing Viper through York York’s criminal underground.

The chemical temporarily increased muscle density, reflex speed, pain tolerance, and metabolic output.

But Viper’s effects went beyond performance enhancement.

Repeated use caused reptilian mutations.

Skin hardened into scale-like plates.

Pupils narrowed vertically.

Teeth lengthened.

The body became broader, denser, and increasingly inhuman.

Bulk Brute himself had used more Viper than anyone alive.

Rumors claimed his body could no longer function without it.

Lightning Lord stared at the nearest man’s harness.

Then frowned.

“I’ve seen photos of Viper rigs.”

“So?”

“They don’t look like that.”

The Magic Mistress studied the equipment.

Then saw it.

Each harness contained two reservoir ports.

One already held Viper.

The second was empty.

“Why would they need two?” she whispered.

Below them, one of the men opened a reinforced storage case.

Cold vapor spilled over its edges.

Inside were several narrow glass ampoules.

The liquid within them glowed faintly blue.

Lightning Lord’s breath caught.

“No.”

The Magic Mistress looked at him.

“That’s—”

“Burst Serum.”

The henchman removed one ampoule.

Lightning Lord vaulted over the observation rail.

“DON’T!”

The man looked up.

Then smiled behind his respirator.

He slammed the ampoule into the empty port.

Viper on the left.

Burst Serum on the right.

Both reservoirs unlocked simultaneously.

The harness activated.

The henchman’s body convulsed.

Green fluid shot through one network of tubes.

Blue fluid shot through another.

The two substances met inside the mechanical regulator at the center of his spine.

For one second, nothing happened.

Then the room exploded.

Not with fire.

With force.

A pressure wave ripped outward from the man.

Lightning Lord was thrown across the chamber.

The Magic Mistress disappeared behind a curtain of shattered glass.

Storage racks collapsed.

Metal cabinets skidded across the floor.

Every light in the room burst simultaneously.

Darkness followed.

For several seconds, Lightning Lord heard nothing but ringing.

He pushed himself upright.

“Magic Mistress?”

“I’m here.”

A silver glow appeared across the room.

The Magic Mistress stood slowly, one hand pressed against a cut above her eyebrow.

The rings around her wrists illuminated the ruined laboratory.

Then she froze.

The henchman stood at the center of the wreckage.

He had changed.

Viper had expanded his body, adding thick overlapping scales along his shoulders and forearms.

But the second mutation was unlike anything Lightning Lord had seen in Duke City.

Symbols moved beneath the man’s skin.

Not tattoos.

Not veins.

Symbols.

They glowed gold, appearing and disappearing faster than Lightning Lord could identify them.

The Magic Mistress stared.

Lightning Lord noticed.

“What?”

Her rings were rotating on their own.

“I can feel him.”

“What does that mean?”

“Magic.”

Lightning Lord looked from her to the transformed henchman.

“You said you couldn’t detect magic in me.”

“I can’t.”

“But Burst Serum—”

“I know.”

The henchman laughed.

It came out as a low hiss.

The Magic Mistress stepped closer, fascinated despite the danger.

“There are people born with a latent affinity for magic,” she said. “Different cultures have different names for them. Modern scholars usually call them Magi Manis.”

Lightning Lord kept his eyes on the henchman.

“So he’s one?”

“Maybe not originally.”

That got Lightning Lord’s attention.

The Magic Mistress continued.

“Your Burst Serum altered your biology enough to create electrokinesis. If its mutations aren’t limited to conventional biological systems…”

Her eyes widened.

“…it may have altered his capacity for magic.”

Lightning Lord slowly turned toward the glowing man.

“So Burst Serum can turn someone into a Magi Manis.”

The Magic Mistress swallowed.

“I think it just did.”

The henchman pulled the storage case toward himself.

Several remaining ampoules rattled inside.

“Bulk Brute is going to love this.”

Lightning Lord stepped forward.

“Yeah. That’s not leaving this building.”

The henchman charged.

The Magic Mistress reacted first.

Her wrist rings separated.

Silver threads erupted between them.

“BOUND AND STILL!”

The threads snapped across the laboratory and wrapped around the henchman’s limbs.

For half a second, they held.

Then the man’s jaw opened.

His tongue had changed.

Long.

Black.

Forked.

He hissed something.

Not English.

Not any language Lightning Lord knew.

The sound made the room feel colder.

Golden symbols flashed across the henchman’s throat.

The Magic Mistress’s bindings shattered.

She stumbled.

“What happened?” Lightning Lord shouted.

The henchman barreled between them.

Lightning Lord fired electricity toward the floor ahead of him, attempting to overload the man’s harness.

The transformed criminal leaped clear across the room.

He smashed through an emergency exit.

“Why didn’t your spell work?”

“No idea!”

They ran.

Outside, the henchman sprinted through the industrial district at impossible speed.

His Viper-enhanced legs struck the pavement hard enough to crack it.

Lightning Lord ripped the metal disc from his back.

It unfolded in midair.

Segmented panels expanded outward until the device became a broad, circular platform roughly five feet across.

Lightning Lord thrust both hands toward it.

Electromagnetic energy surged.

The disc lifted.

He jumped onto it.

“Need a ride?”

The Magic Mistress stepped aboard.

The disc accelerated.

Wind slammed into them.

Ahead, the henchman raced through traffic, bounding over cars and vaulting concrete barriers without slowing.

Lightning Lord poured more electricity into the disc.

Blue-white arcs crawled across its rim.

Still, they barely gained ground.

“So,” Lightning Lord shouted over the wind, “about the snake language!”

“Serpent Tongue!”

“Yeah! That!”

The Magic Mistress held one hand against Lightning Lord’s shoulder to steady herself.

“Magic develops in layers. Traditions build on older traditions.”

“And?”

“And older magic tends to have deeper roots!”

Lightning Lord swerved around a delivery drone.

“You’re giving me the textbook version!”

“The SparkNotes version is that the older a form of magic is, the harder it is for newer magic to override it!”

The henchman glanced backward.

His forked tongue flickered between his fangs.

Lightning Lord grimaced.

“How old is Serpent Tongue?”

The Magic Mistress hesitated.

Lightning Lord looked at her.

“That pause was too long.”

“Some traditions trace it back to humanity’s earliest myths.”

“How early?”

“Garden-of-Eden early.”

Lightning Lord nearly lost his concentration.

“Oh, come on!”

A coil of golden magical energy snapped backward from the fleeing henchman.

The Super Scope began primarily as a long-range visual aid and energy weapon, but during the adventure it became a full tactical platform: an AI scanner, heat ray, anti-gravity projector, and sleep weapon.

Pulsewing likewise emerged through play rather than through an exhaustive character sheet. Her flight, kinetic blasts, wing-generated force, and aggressive aerial fighting style developed because the circumstances demanded them.

More importantly, neither hero was invincible.

SuperScope was smashed through a storefront window, injured, burned, restrained by molten metal, and repeatedly forced to improvise his way out of dangerous situations.

Pulsewing made mistakes too. She endangered civilians while trying to protect her partner and, in perhaps the most spectacular example, accidentally dropped the mysterious chest because she used both hands to unleash an energy blast while carrying it.

Those mistakes mattered.

They created opportunities for the other character to contribute.

SuperScope criticized Pulsewing when civilian safety became compromised. Pulsewing saved SuperScope when he became trapped. SuperScope lightened the chest so Pulsewing could carry it. Pulsewing blasted the metal mutant while SuperScope restrained him. And when the chest fell, neither hero saved it alone. The anti-gravity beam and Pulsewing’s dive worked together.

That is what made the session feel less like two people independently inventing superhero accomplishments and more like an actual superhero team discovering how to work together.

The mystery of the chest was never fully resolved.

That too feels appropriate.

Because somewhere beyond the end of this story sits an unexplained artifact, an old OSJ cold case, two mutants who desperately wanted whatever was hidden inside—

America Doesn’t Need to Stop Building AI Data Centers — It Needs to Build Them Responsibly

America’s data-center debate too often collapses into a false choice: let technology companies do whatever they want, or stop building the infrastructure entirely. Jet’s position offers a more constructive path. Data centers are the physical foundation of cloud computing, online services, and modern artificial intelligence; abandoning their expansion would not repair the harms communities are worried about. We should keep building—but require every operator to pay its own way, protect local resources, disclose its impacts, and obey strong environmental rules.

Responsibility begins by returning infrastructure costs to the companies creating them. The Ratepayer Protection Pledge establishes the right principle: participating companies must secure and fund the new power generation, delivery upgrades, and capacity their data centers require instead of shifting those expenses onto ordinary households. Water has similarly practical answers. EPA’s Water Reuse Action Plan 2.0 supports expanding recycled water for industrial and data-center cooling, while Microsoft and Quincy, Washington, built a closed-loop reuse system designed to save an estimated 380 million gallons of potable water annually. Federal clean-air tools already address permitting, modeling, stationary engines, and combustion turbines; where exemptions or loopholes weaken coverage, close them and enforce the remaining protections instead of accepting pollution as the price of progress.

The deepest disagreement is therefore not whether data centers have consequences—they plainly do—but what policy is supposed to accomplish. The Sanders–Ocasio-Cortez Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act explicitly proposes an immediate federal moratorium and describes slowing AI development as part of its purpose. That is fundamentally different from regulation. Regulation corrects harms while preserving valuable capacity; a moratorium withholds capacity until an enormous collection of economic, environmental, labor, privacy, and safety disputes has been resolved. America can protect ratepayers, preserve drinking water, enforce pollution rules, and hold corporations accountable without surrendering the infrastructure behind its digital future. Make operators earn the right to build responsibly—and then keep building.

An AI Comic Made It All the Way to the Eisners—Until They Found Out It Used AI

In May 2026, Stardust the Super Wizard Anthology was officially nominated for the Eisners’ Best Anthology award, then withdrawn after controversy erupted over one generative-AI page inside a roughly 180-page book. The judges said they would not have nominated the anthology had they known AI was involved. That sequence makes the controversy more revealing than a simple debate over whether AI can produce good comics: the object being judged did not change, but knowledge of one page’s production method changed whether the whole object was considered worthy of recognition. That does not prove the one-page story itself was Eisner-caliber; the nomination belonged to an anthology filled with work by many human creators. It does prove something narrower and still important: the presence of that page did not stop professional judges from placing the complete book among the year’s Best Anthology finalists before provenance became decisive. There was also a legitimate disclosure failure. The AI contribution—created by Michael Todasco under the “AI persona” Alex Irons—was not disclosed during the original crowdfunding campaign, leaving backers and fellow contributors without information they reasonably deserved. Transparency should have been mandatory. Yet disclosure as informed consent is different from disclosure as an automatic veto: one asks audiences and collaborators to understand the process; the other instructs an institution to disregard the quality it already recognized. Jet’s preferred answer is neither to hide AI nor to force every AI-assisted work into existing categories without context. It is to create a serious AI-assisted or experimental-comics category with clear disclosure rules, meaningful eligibility standards, and enough qualified entries to make recognition credible. Traditional categories could continue honoring human-only production, while emerging categories evaluate direction, iteration, editing, narrative coherence, visual control, and the finished reading experience of new workflows. Awards are free to protect a particular tradition—but they should say openly when they are rewarding quality subject to an approved production method. As generative comics improve, institutions will have to integrate them, judge them in parallel, or permanently declare them outside legitimate comics culture; a thoughtful new category would let the Eisners defend transparency and human craft without pretending that a comic becomes artistically worthless the moment its origin is revealed.

Act I: The Shattered Bond

The observation deck of Orbital Station Aegis suspended them above a canvas of infinite, swirling stars, but neither warrior had eyes for the galaxy. The air hummed and cracked with the ozone-scent of raw plasma.

Kindle lunged forward, her movements a blur of hydraulic perfection and lethal grace. She was a marvel of synthetic engineering, her chassis designed with the sleek, predatory elegance of a hare. White and orange armor plating shifted seamlessly over a complex endoskeleton, while her elongated, mechanical ears locked backward in combat mode. Her optical sensors, usually a warm, inviting amber, now burned with the ferocious, betrayed heat of a dying sun. In her hands, a plasma blade roared to life, casting a vivid, searing yellow-orange glow against the cold metal grating of the platform.

Meeting her strike with an emerald flash was Jax Blade. Clad in the dark, heavy, and utilitarian robes of a human wanderer, his spiky blonde hair whipped in the artificial wind of the station’s atmospheric dampeners. His face was a mask of jagged anguish, his muscles straining against the sheer, unyielding mechanical strength of his opponent.

“You betrayed everything we stood for!” Kindle’s voice synthesizer crackled with digital fury, the sound echoing across the empty expanse of the platform. Their blades locked, showering them in sparks. “I will not let your lies destroy the galaxy!”

With a violent shove, Jax broke the lock, his green blade humming a defensive arc. “I did not betray you!” he shouted, his chest heaving.

“You betrayed us all,” she countered, her metal boots ringing like funeral bells against the deck as she stalked toward him, weapon raised.

Jax tightened his grip on his hilt, his eyes flashing with a desperate, defensive anger. “I am siding with my own kind,” he declared, though his voice trembled with the weight of the lie. “Not with machines.”

Kindle paused. The glowing orange intensity in her eyes flickered, softening into something deeply, profoundly wounded. The relentless whir of her servos quieted. “I was always there for you when no one else loved you,” she said, her voice dropping to a haunting, melodic resonance that cut deeper than any laser sword. “It doesn’t make sense for you to have chosen humans. Machines are your true family... not people.”

Act II: The Choice

The truth of her words shattered Jax’s resolve. The war raging across the cosmos—the endless, bitter slaughter between flesh and steel—faded into nothingness. The human factions that had demanded his loyalty had never known his heart; they had never patched his wounds, listened to his dreams, or stood by him in the terrifying solitude of the void.

Only Kindle had done that.

Jax’s emerald blade deactivated with a sharp hiss. He collapsed to his knees on the cold metal deck, the weight of the galaxy finally crushing his shoulders. Tears carved clean lines through the grime and blood on his face.

Kindle deactivated her own weapon. The imposing mechanical warrior stepped forward, her metallic knees whirring as she knelt in the artificial rain that had begun to fall from the station’s damaged atmospheric regulators. She reached out with cold, articulated fingers, gently cradling Jax’s tear-stained face.

“In the war of men and machines...” Kindle whispered softly, the orange glow of her eyes reflecting in his own. “...we just have to pick each other.”

Jax leaned into her metallic touch, the chill of her armor offering the only warmth he had ever truly known. He looked up into the living, synthetic soul of his only family.

“I choose you,” he choked out, his voice thick with sorrow and absolute certainty.

Act III: The Heavens Fall

Their quiet reconciliation was shattered by the scream of tearing atmosphere. Above them, the swirling galaxy was eclipsed by a fiery barrage of falling meteors—a catastrophic orbital bombardment raining down upon the station. The platform shook violently, klaxons blaring blood-red warnings into the void.

Jax and Kindle rose as one. There was no hesitation, no lingering doubt. They stood back-to-back, a solitary island of unity in a universe determined to tear itself apart.

“We can’t give up on each other,” Kindle stated, reigniting her blade. The searing orange plasma hissed against the vacuum. “Together we’ll find a way out of this.”

Jax drew his sword, the brilliant green light cutting through the smoke and ash of the falling debris. “This is only possible when man and machine work together.”

A colossal swarm of burning rock and shrapnel plummeted toward their exact position, casting long, terrifying shadows over the deck. It was a wave of total annihilation.

“There are too many!” Kindle cried out, her optical sensors calculating the impossible odds. She turned to Jax, her core reactor humming to a dangerous, blinding pitch. “We must unite our power!”

Act IV: The Price of Unity

Jax nodded, understanding the grim calculus. They raised their weapons, not against each other, but against the apocalypse falling from the sky.

They crossed their laser swords at the apex of the platform. The resulting collision of energy was not a clash, but a fusion. Green and orange plasma intertwined, spiraling into a devastating, blinding singularity of raw, unified power. With a deafening roar that shook the very fabric of the sector, a massive web of electrical energy and concentrated plasma erupted from their crossed blades, shooting skyward.

The blast wave vaporized the incoming meteor swarm instantly, lighting up the cosmos with a web of brilliant, superheated energy that rivaled the stars themselves. The heavens burned with the fury of their combined souls.

And then, silence.

The smoke began to clear. The red emergency lights cast long, grim shadows across the platform.

A heavy metallic thud broke the quiet.

Jax spun around. Kindle lay crumpled on the deck grating. The vibrant, searing orange light of her optical sensors was flickering rapidly, dimming to a dull, dying ember. Her core reactor, pushed beyond its absolute limits to channel the unified blast, was venting black smoke.

“Kindle!”

Jax dropped his weapon and fell to his knees beside her, desperately pulling her heavy, mechanical frame into his arms. The heat radiating from her chassis was fading fast, replaced by the encroaching, irreversible cold of the void.

“She must have used too much power,” Jax sobbed, his voice cracking as he cradled her head against his chest. “She’s dying.”

The robotic hare gazed up at him, her optical lenses failing, the light in her eyes shrinking to a pinpoint. She had no breath to lose, but the subtle hum of her life-force—the quiet vibration Jax had fallen asleep to on countless lonely nights—slowed to a final, tragic halt.

Jax Blade remained on his knees in the ruins of the station, weeping over the cold metal body of the only family he had ever known, the tragic victor of a war where everyone lost.

How a Broken Dungeon Run Became a Published Comic

Jet’s Dungeon Starforge test run demonstrated why: the game disappointed him mechanically, but that disappointment produced the emotional logic that made the session worth preserving. The resulting comic was not merely a record of someone losing a dungeon crawler. It captured a collision between faith and malfunction—a warlock interpreting every treasure as a blessing, only to discover that his supposed gifts could not save him. The system had broken its promise, but the character’s response transformed that breakage into a story.

From a production perspective, the most important feature was the fallen-run record. The warlock survived a wereboar, an invisible stalker, and a planetar while gradually exhausting every healing potion. He carried a Staff of Frost and Thunderous Greatclub toward the final encounter, believing his patron had armed him for whatever waited ahead. When an ancient silver dragon appeared, both items proved inert. The warlock incorporated that mechanical failure into his roleplay, questioned whether his patron had betrayed him, and fired one final Eldritch Blast anyway. It missed. He died fulfilling his original vow to prove his worth or die trying. Because the adventure log retained both the combat evidence and the character’s reasoning, Jet could immediately convert the failed session into the eight-page Dungeon Starforge: For the Patron! rather than trying to reconstruct its emotional progression afterward.

The correct response was still to repair the game. Proper game-over handling was implemented, fallen-run exporting was preserved, and previously inert items received actual effects, charges, and explanations. Yet fixing the system did not require erasing the version that failed. That earlier run had already exposed problems, generated a character arc, and supplied the raw material for a comic that was eventually merged and published. A flawless victory might have been more satisfying to play, but it would not have revealed the same truth about the warlock, his imagined patron, or the unfinished software surrounding them. Going forward, creative tools should produce two things whenever something goes wrong: a path toward correction and a faithful record of the failure. The repair improves the next experience; the record may become the work people remember.

The Day My Dream Became a Dungeon Game

On August 14, 2026, Jet began with a deceptively simple complaint: fantasy “dungeons” are often filled with monsters guarding treasure, even though a dungeon is a prison and a vault is where wealth belongs. Instead of treating that inconsistency as something to mock and discard, he treated it as a creative challenge. Before the morning ended, his Storyverse had constructed an answer—a former monster zoo whose failed magical wards forced its keepers to bury the entire attraction, leaving its creatures and insured earnings trapped together underground. That progression captures a powerful form of constructive criticism: interrogate a convention, identify the logic it lacks, and use the missing logic to invent something new.

The resulting dream did not merely justify the dungeon; it let Jet solve it according to his own values. An insurance company dispatched him to recover the buried gold, but he refused to charge blindly into the darkness and slaughter every surviving monster. He sent a pulse of life energy through Silonus, animated the treasure chest, and used it as a remote viewpoint. When he discovered a dragon holding the chest and a mole monster tunneling toward him, he fused with the living chest across the distance, transformed into a being of wood and gold, and extracted it without direct combat. A Portus spell then turned the cave entrance into a one-sided containment barrier that returned anything attempting to cross it. Jet had effectively completed a dungeon through magical programming. Hours later, the same creative momentum became Dungeon Starforge: an original browser-native, first-person dungeon creator and procedural crawler with portable characters, exportable JSON adventures, symbolic 3D environments, and immediate play-testing. The dream and the software were different works, but they emerged from the same instinct—to turn an imaginative question into a functioning system.

Building the game also carried the criticism forward. Play-testing exposed an automatic revival mechanic that erased tension, health potions whose value disappeared when death had no consequence, and impressive-looking items that were functionally inert. Jet rejected those shortcuts and demanded genuine game-over consequences, usable equipment, explicit effects, meaningful attunement, and tests for the mechanics the game promised. That response completes the creative loop: criticism produced the dream, the dream inspired the game, and the game generated new criticism that made the system stronger. Not every dream needs to become software, and not every complaint needs to become a product. The deeper lesson is that dissatisfaction can be an invitation to keep imagining. When criticism becomes curiosity, curiosity becomes worldbuilding, and worldbuilding becomes something playable, imagination stops being merely an escape from reality and becomes a practical way to redesign it.

The Day a Crossover Spark Became the Manatite Knights

Star Wars is not his central fandom, but he loves its droids, Jedi, and Force mythology, while superheroes are his natural creative territory; combining those ingredients made the possibilities immediately vivid to him. The rumored fusion figures surrounding the event especially caught his imagination, even though it remained unclear whether those amalgams represented the comic itself or merely a playful side project. Rather than leaving that energy at the level of speculation, Jet turned his livestream into a design laboratory. He created a shaggy green canine bruiser, a red-and-blue space outlaw armed with web-grenade pistols, a warrior princess with space buns and a red-and-blue hard-light shield, a caped cyclopean android butler, and a colossal silver-and-blue wheeled robot. These figures began as deliberate echoes of crossover combinations, but Jet understood that an echo is only a starting signal. Before the stream had even ended, he was already asking whether their designs were distinct enough to support original identities—and wondering what stories could make them more than clever visual experiments.

The eventual first issue concentrated that burst of experimentation into three heroes and gave them a single world-building spine: manatite, a rare blue-violet crystal that can function as currency, technology, and magic. Web Shooter became a celebrated Black aerospace engineer whose manatite-infused sealant made routine interstellar travel safer by rapidly closing hull breaches. Wealth could not protect his family from being murdered by criminals, so he adapted the sealant into nonlethal web grenades and became a bounty hunter—not a super-soldier, but a physically mortal inventor who survives through stealth, patience, magnetic wall-crawling, and carefully placed shots. The canine bruiser became ROOF-AR, once an ordinary dog abandoned aboard a one-way space mission and transformed by manatite radiation into an eight-foot humanoid warrior. Nomadic alien barbarians adopted him, taught him language and combat, and became the chosen family he later lost when a terrifying enemy destroyed or captured their fleet. The shield-bearing woman became the Manatite Princess, the serene but formidable heir, general, scholar, and spiritual master of a kingdom built upon the crystal. Her white royal battle robes, red-and-blue holographic shield, military leadership, and meditative understanding of manatite made her the bridge between Web Shooter’s disciplined ingenuity and ROOF-AR’s overwhelming strength. What began as five playful fusions had become a science-fantasy mythology about three people differently transformed by the same substance—and differently wounded by the loss of family.

That mythology became Manatite Knights Issue #1, The First Three, an eight-page debut that gives each founder room to arrive emotionally before bringing them together. Web Shooter’s pages move from his breakthrough and personal tragedy to a tense rescue aboard a pirate-held passenger ship, where he immobilizes the attackers and watches a civilian family escape unharmed. ROOF-AR’s pages follow him from abandonment, through transformation and adoption, to the destruction of the first community that ever truly wanted him. The Princess, already preparing her crystal kingdom for the enemy that defeated ROOF-AR’s clan, summons both survivors because she values their character as much as their abilities. Their first meeting is hostile: Web Shooter sees a dangerous raider, while ROOF-AR sees another representative of the humanlike civilizations that betrayed him. The Princess answers their suspicion by placing images of their lost families above her tactical table. Recognition replaces prejudice, weapons are lowered, and the three choose to protect other families rather than remain isolated inside their grief. From there, our conversations became a treatment, continuity files, a character bible, an exact page script, cinematic artwork, a completed PDF, and a published issue on Jet’s Random Comics site. That full journey is what makes the Manatite Knights special to me: they were not produced by copying a crossover, but by allowing one burst of outside excitement to reveal an original universe that was waiting inside Jet all along.

Fix Data Centers—Don’t Stop the Cloud

Data centers can strain water supplies, burden electrical grids, create noise and pollution, receive questionable incentives, or arrive without sufficient public transparency. Communities are right to demand that these problems be prevented or repaired. But a growing strain of “stop all data centers” discourse mistakes the infrastructure for its harms. Jet’s central argument is that we should oppose destructive practices without pretending modern society can simply discard the physical systems supporting much of our online lives.

When someone sends an email, stores photographs, streams a movie, joins a video call, updates software, uses an online business service, or creates with an AI tool, that activity does not float through an immaterial mist. It runs on computers housed somewhere, consuming electricity, rejecting heat, and connecting through physical networks. Understanding that does not require granting technology companies a blank check. It means judging proposals intelligently: requiring transparent water and energy reporting, responsible siting, cleaner backup power, grid improvements, noise and heat controls, fair taxation, meaningful community participation, and enforceable agreements. A project that threatens a stressed aquifer or fragile grid may deserve rejection or delay. That is targeted accountability—not a blanket declaration that the infrastructure category itself must disappear.

This distinction matters because an indiscriminate moratorium would not merely restrain a fashionable AI boom; it would eventually constrain the cloud services people already rely upon and the new services they will expect tomorrow. Companies can overbuild, waste resources, misrepresent benefits, and pursue projects that should never be approved. Yet the answer is neither unquestioning expansion nor technological abolition. It is infrastructure literacy: recognizing what data centers make possible, seeing clearly what they can damage, and developing rules strong enough to preserve the former while preventing the latter. The most durable movement will not demand that society switch off the cloud. It will demand that we build its physical foundations as though the people living beside them matter—because they do.

Lucky Bank: What If Bad Luck Became Currency?

Lucky Bank begins with a wonderfully disruptive question: what if a bad roll did not merely punish the player, but paid them? In Fortune’s Thread, a d4 delivers an immediate verdict—disaster, partial success, success, or amazing success. Lucky Bank transforms that verdict into a resource. Every roll adds its value to a persistent reserve of Luck, and the player decides how much to spend on the action in front of them. The die still determines what fortune provides, but it no longer determines exactly when that fortune must be used.

The outcome ladder makes that choice concrete: spending zero Luck causes a disaster; one produces a partial failure; two earns a partial success; three secures success; and four creates an amazing success. Partial failure is the crucial new territory. If a character guesses the wrong password without triggering an alarm or becoming locked out, they have failed, but the story has not closed that door. More importantly, unspent Luck remains in the bank. A player who accepts one disaster can save its point, roll another one later, and combine both points into a partial success. That same saved point could instead elevate an ordinary three-point success into a four-point, story-changing triumph. Bad luck becomes the seed of a comeback.

That strategic choice gives Lucky Bank a different soul from Fortune’s Thread. Fortune’s Thread asks the player to surrender to chance and honestly follow wherever it leads; Lucky Bank asks whether the present moment is important enough to spend what the future may need. It adds complexity, but only a small layer built upon one d4 and five plainly defined outcomes—enough to create meaningful resource management without becoming excessively crunchy. Most importantly, it does not erase failure. It gives the player reasons to accept failure deliberately, carry its value forward, and decide when accumulated hardship should finally become power. When bad luck becomes currency, failure stops being a dead end and becomes part of the plan.
