Russia is pounding Ukraine night after night as Kyiv’s air-defense stocks tighten. China is extending the contest far beyond Taiwan. North Korea is building nuclear weapons while leaving the door cracked for Trump. And from Niger to the Gulf of Aden, Russia and terrorist organizations are exploiting instability. These conflicts are increasingly connected by one critical question: how much military, economic and political pressure can the international system absorb at the same time?

Iran: An Exit Ramp in the Middle of an Escalation

The most important development in the Iran war may not be another missile launch. It is an offer. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Tehran will reciprocate immediately if the United States returns to its commitments under the June interim agreement intended to halt the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

That comes immediately after the first direct U.S.-Iran military exchange in roughly a month. American forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island after U.S. officials said the IRGC was preparing rockets carrying sea mines for use in Hormuz. Iran responded with ballistic missiles against two facilities used by American forces in Jordan. President Trump has threatened another response.

So Iran is communicating on two tracks. Militarily, its message is that attacks on Iranian territory will produce retaliation. Diplomatically, Tehran is saying there is still a deal available. That is both encouraging and extraordinarily dangerous.

For weeks, Hormuz has been Iran’s most powerful bargaining chip. Tehran knows it does not need to defeat the United States militarily if it can impose sufficient economic costs through one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. Only a fraction of normal commercial traffic is currently moving through the strait, and oil has climbed back above $90 a barrel.

The question now is whether Washington sees Pezeshkian’s statement as an opening—or another attempt to extract concessions under military pressure. Both sides have reasons to stop. Neither wants to appear to be the side that backed down. That is precisely how limited wars become larger ones.

Ukraine: Russia Is Trying to Exhaust the Defense

Russia has now attacked Kyiv and surrounding areas for six consecutive days. At least 12 people were killed in the latest attacks, including six railway workers, as Russian missiles and drones struck residential areas, transportation infrastructure and other targets. Russia also attacked the Odesa region, threatening infrastructure vital to Ukrainian agricultural exports.

But the most important number may be six. The tempo suggests Russia may be moving beyond periodic mass attacks toward something more systematic: a sustained campaign designed to exhaust Ukraine’s air defenses. Moscow is mixing ballistic missiles with enormous numbers of drones, including faster jet-powered systems.

Ukraine confronts a brutal calculation. Russia can manufacture or acquire relatively inexpensive drones in enormous numbers. Ukraine sometimes has to use far more expensive—and much scarcer—interceptors to destroy them. Even a Russian drone that never reaches its target can therefore accomplish something strategically important: it can force Ukraine to spend. Patriot interceptors are increasingly precious.

Russia is also widening its target set to railways, warehouses, ports, food distribution and energy infrastructure. These are not simply military targets. They are the machinery that allows Ukraine to function.

Kyiv’s answer is increasingly asymmetric: attack Russia’s economy. Ukrainian drones continue hitting Russian refineries, fuel facilities and export infrastructure, disrupting production and forcing Moscow to absorb growing economic costs.

And then there is Narendra Modi. The Indian prime minister—one of Vladimir Putin’s most consequential international partners—has publicly told the Russian president that the war needs to end. That matters precisely because India is not part of the Western coalition trying to isolate Moscow. It is one of Russia’s biggest oil customers and maintains a longstanding strategic relationship with the Kremlin.

Modi is not abandoning Putin. But when a partner helping sustain Russia economically begins publicly arguing that the war should end, Moscow has to listen differently. Diplomatic pressure for an end to the war is growing at exactly the moment the military campaign is intensifying.

Europe: Preparing for the Long War

Europe increasingly appears to be planning for a confrontation with Russia that will outlive the Ukraine war. Poland is building what could become Europe’s largest army while shifting more defense production toward Polish and Central European companies. Greece is moving toward a multibillion-dollar Israeli-built air-defense system. Baltic nations are developing coordinated defenses against drones, and NATO’s military presence in the Arctic is expanding sufficiently that Moscow now calls it a direct threat. Here’s what that means.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s lightning trip to Moscow this week looks increasingly like the latter.

Ratcliffe flew into the Russian capital Tuesday aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 after stopping in Riga, Latvia. He spent roughly eight hours on the ground and met Sergei Naryshkin, director of Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence service. The Kremlin says President Vladimir Putin did not meet Ratcliffe, although Putin was briefed on the talks.

President Trump has called the mission “semi-routine.”

Historically, it was anything but.

CBS News, citing multiple people familiar with the matter, reports that Ratcliffe carried a warning to Moscow not to attack NATO members amid U.S. intelligence assessments that Russia could attempt to test the alliance. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports the warning was particularly concerned with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Neither the White House nor Kremlin has publicly confirmed that account.

That qualification is important. So is the reporting.

Because if the NATO warning was indeed central to Ratcliffe’s mission, Washington apparently decided the risk had become serious enough that the message should not be delivered by an ambassador, special envoy or State Department official.

It sent the director of the CIA.

The arrest of a former intern at NATO’s military headquarters in Belgium is a reminder that espionage is not always about stealing one classified document. Access itself has value. An intern can observe people, routines, security habits, office layouts, communications practices and organizational weak points. That kind of information can help a foreign service build targeting files, identify future recruitment prospects, map sensitive offices and understand how NATO functions under pressure. The danger is not just what the suspect may have taken — it is what she may have seen.

This spy case began moving publicly on July 25, when Belgian authorities announced that a Canadian woman of Chinese origin who had worked as an intern at SHAPE — NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium — had been arrested on suspicion of espionage for an unnamed “third country” and participation in a criminal organization.

The public record remains thin. Authorities have not identified her name, age, school, assigned office, clearance level or alleged sponsor state. That matters. “Chinese origin” is background, not proof of Chinese intelligence control. It should not be treated as evidence by itself. It’s unfolding inside the institutions that govern the West.

According to multiple intelligence sources, European officials are increasingly concerned about Chinese influence and intelligence activities operating across European institutions. The concern is significant enough that the European Commission is reportedly strengthening internal security measures amid growing worries about Beijing’s ability to shape conversations surrounding technology, trade, sanctions, security policy, and strategic decision-making.

For years, Europe viewed China primarily as an economic opportunity. That era appears to be ending.

What intelligence officials increasingly see is a sophisticated network of influence operations, political access, technology acquisition efforts, and long-term strategic positioning designed to shape future outcomes in Beijing’s favor.

The story matters because Brussels sits at the center of decisions involving NATO, Ukraine, sanctions, defense procurement, artificial intelligence regulation, and transatlantic security cooperation.

But this is not peace.

What exists today is a ceasefire framework designed to stop a war that neither side appeared capable of decisively winning. The agreement lowers the immediate risk of further escalation, but it leaves unresolved virtually every major strategic dispute that caused the conflict in the first place.

The most important reality is that the nuclear issue—the stated reason the United States entered the conflict—has been deferred rather than resolved.

Under the emerging framework, Iran reportedly agrees not to pursue nuclear weapons. Yet negotiations over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, future enrichment activities, inspections, sanctions relief, and verification mechanisms will occur later. In effect, Washington and Tehran have agreed to stop shooting first and tackle the hardest problem afterward.

That creates a fundamental vulnerability. If negotiations stall, the same dispute that helped drive the war could reemerge within weeks or months.

Military briefings provide one perspective. Intelligence assessments provide another. Satellite imagery, battlefield maps, think tank reports, and government statements all contribute pieces to the puzzle. Together, they help explain troop movements, weapons systems, strategic objectives, and the shifting dynamics of the battlefield.

But they often miss something equally important: the people.

That is why my recent conversation with retired Swedish Ambassador Lars Freden was so striking.

Freden, a veteran diplomat who served in senior positions across Europe and Asia, including postings in China, Mongolia, Croatia, and Russia, has spent much of his life trying to understand how nations behave and how conflicts unfold. Yet when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he concluded that traditional sources of information could tell him only part of the story.

He wanted to understand the war at ground level.

“I wanted to do something for the war effort against the Russians,” Freden told me during an interview in Stockholm. “But I’m too old to fight.”

At 75, military service was not an option. Instead, he chose a different path.

He got on a bicycle.

In the summer of 2024, Freden traveled to Ukraine and rode approximately 1,600 kilometers—about 1,000 miles—along the front lines and through areas that had experienced some of the war’s fiercest fighting. In 2025, he returned and rode hundreds of additional miles, revisiting communities affected by the conflict and expanding his understanding of conditions along the front.

His journey was not designed as an adventure. Nor was it a publicity stunt.

It begins with pressure.

It begins with access restrictions, lawsuits, regulatory threats, ownership changes, financial strain, political intimidation, and campaigns designed to convince citizens that journalists themselves are the enemy. It begins with attacks on credibility rather than attacks on buildings. It begins with making independent reporting more difficult, more expensive, more dangerous, and ultimately less effective.

That is why the current moment in the United States deserves the attention of journalists, scholars, policymakers, and citizens everywhere.

Across the country, newsrooms are shrinking. Hundreds of journalists have lost their jobs. Investigative teams have been reduced. Foreign bureaus have been cut back. Veteran reporters with decades of institutional knowledge have been shown the door. Entire sections devoted to public accountability reporting have been diminished or eliminated. Ownership changes and corporate restructuring have transformed news organizations that once viewed aggressive reporting as central to their mission.

These developments are often presented as business decisions. Some undoubtedly are. The economic challenges facing journalism are real and substantial. But focusing only on the financial explanations misses the larger danger.

Every journalist who leaves a newsroom takes something with them that cannot easily be replaced. They take years of expertise. They take trusted sources. They take knowledge of institutions, governments, agencies, and communities. They take relationships that took decades to build. Most importantly, they take reporting that will never be done.

There are stories that will never be investigated. Documents that will never be requested. Sources who will never receive a phone call. Corruption that will never be exposed. Waste that will never be uncovered. Abuses of power that will never be challenged.

This matters because journalism is not simply another industry. It is one of the few institutions in a democratic society whose primary purpose is to examine power on behalf of the public. When journalism weakens, the public’s ability to understand what those in power are doing weakens with it.

The consequences extend far beyond the newsroom.

A weakened press creates a weakened citizenry. Citizens cannot make informed decisions if reliable information becomes harder to obtain. Voters cannot effectively hold leaders accountable if they do not know what those leaders are doing. Communities cannot solve complex problems if they can no longer agree on basic facts.

At the same time, the information environment is becoming increasingly polluted. Disinformation, propaganda, manipulated content, and conspiracy theories move across digital platforms at extraordinary speed. Falsehoods often travel farther and faster than verified reporting. Emotional narratives frequently outperform factual ones. Entire communities now consume radically different versions of reality.

This creates a dangerous combination.

History offers repeated warnings about this process. Democracies do not usually collapse because citizens suddenly reject freedom. What happens to those institutions will not remain confined within American borders. If independent journalism can be weakened in one of the world’s oldest and most influential democracies, the lesson will not be lost on leaders elsewhere.

The methods being employed are also globally relevant. Modern information control rarely requires outright censorship. It does not require governments to shut down newspapers or ban broadcasts. It can be achieved through financial pressure, ownership influence, strategic litigation, regulatory intimidation, access restrictions, public delegitimization, and the creation of alternative information ecosystems designed to replace independent reporting.

The objective is not necessarily to silence every journalist. The objective is to weaken journalism’s ability to function.

That distinction matters.

A newsroom can remain open while becoming less effective. A journalist can remain employed while facing increasing pressure to avoid difficult stories. A media organization can continue publishing while losing the resources necessary to investigate powerful institutions. The appearance of a free press can survive long after its capacity to perform its democratic role has been diminished.

That is why the warning signs should not be ignored.

The destruction of a free press rarely arrives as a single dramatic event. It unfolds gradually, through a series of decisions that seem isolated when viewed individually but reveal a pattern when viewed together. A layoff here. A lawsuit there. An ownership change. An access restriction. A threatened investigation. A newsroom closure. A self-censored story. A reporter who decides the fight is no longer worth it.

Then another.

And another.

And another.

Until one day a society discovers that one of its most important democratic safeguards has become too weak to perform the function it was designed to serve.

The question facing Americans—and increasingly the world—is whether enough people will recognize that danger before the damage becomes irreversible.
