THIS WEEK: the lunar eclipse is on Thursday, and the lead-up can feel really challenging. (yep, I know that the image above is a solar eclipse, but the lunar eclipse images I found were pretty much just a very dark sky)

LUNAR INFLUENCE: Our moon directly influences all of the water on planet earth: the tides, the weather, the ground water, all living plants and animals including us humans (even our bones are 31% water they say)

And when the moon’s reflected shine is blocked out, we notice the lack of that influence: stuckness or a lack of flow, emotional stifles, disconnect from our feelings.

So this week’s Mental Monday session is especially for emotional support and for a peaceful heart.

COSMIC CONTEXT:

This fall “eclipse season” is the time between and including the eclipses: Aug. 12 (solar) and Aug. 27 (lunar).

A window in the calendar when the moon's tilted orbit brings it briefly into position to allow for an eclipse of the sun (the new moon lands between us and the sun, obscuring the sun), and an eclipse of the moon (we are between the sun and the full moon, casting our shadow across the moon).

This time can feel:

• Disruptive or confusing mentally

• And/or like stuckness or blockage in the body (or mind)… like you’re somehow being held back

This Sunday evening sound session on 23rd August at the lovely ETNA Community Centre in St Margarets will focus on sonic combinations and sequences which ease the mind and deeply relax the body, allowing for opening up to flow.

HOW IT WORKS: Lie back and let the specially designed Sound Bath take you into a state of deep, therapeutic, restorative relaxation. Our brain waves relax gently into the THETA brainwave frequency, which only usually happens when we are in deep sleep (which a lot of us don’t even reach these days).

And it is the brainwave state where the body releases into healing.

Dear sound friends,

This week (Weds, 12th Aug) the UK (especially across the south) will experience a dramatic almost-full solar eclipse—the deepest solar blockage since 1999.

Last experienced 27 years ago.

Approximately 90% to 96% of the Sun’s light will be blocked between 18:00-20:15 BST.

~~~

What causes it? The moon moving exactly between the earth and the Sun near sunset… so the Sun is sort of hiding behind the moon from our perspective.

~~~

Later the same night (and the following night, so 12th and 13th August) the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak under this month’s “dark” new moon between midnight and 5:00am. You can see it in the early mornings until Aug 24, but now is peak.

What this all can feel like:

ECLIPSE: During an eclipse it can feel like you’re being blocked, literally. That your energy is depleted, the things you are trying to accomplish are just stuck, your thoughts just won’t line up.

DARK NEW MOON: An especially invisible (“dark”) new moon can really plumb your emotional depths… again with the stuckness feelings, like you can’t lift yourself out.

METEOR SHOWER: This particular cosmic shower is quite pronounced. Any one-off cosmic activity, even if it is stunning visually, awe-inspiring, and predicted, can feel like it’s rattling your cage a bit. Again with the difficulty catching a thought.

HELP FOR THE SEASON:

Awareness is often enough to help you relax and ride it out.

The visuals are STUNNING, truly.

And to help mitigate the feelings often accompanying these things, use sound or music that makes you exhale, sigh, or smile to yourself.

Engage that one sense (hearing) that doesn’t require you to “do” anything, just close your eyes, rest your bones, and receive the music.

It will centre you

and the sound will ease the spiralling and foggy mental states, and release the associated tension in your body.

Hi Sound friends,

This time in the calendar has a very specific feel to it.

Very tied to the movements of the earth (and the sun).

You can jump straight to the take-aways at the bottom, or read on for a bit about the historical and cosmic contexts of the beginning of August.

The WHEEL OF THE YEAR

The Celts (and just about everybody else on planet earth) used to divide up their year into four major parts which were marked by the Summer and Winter Solstices (the lightest and darkest days) and the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes (the days when light and dark were exactly the same length).

Then the Celts took the logical next step and split each of those four seasons in half, called the day exactly half-way through each quarter a “cross-quarter day”.

Basically another reason to party. (I jest, but only partly… celebrating nature and how she changes was BIG. Especially because whether you ate or didn’t eat depended on whether you understood when to plant, when to harvest, etc etc)

Lammas / Lughnasadh

Right about now, the beginning of August, is the cross-quarter time between Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox.

“Lughnasadh” is the older name - and it means the wedding of the Sun god and the Earth goddess which caused the ripening of the crops at this time. It’s the time when the grain is harvested, so one celebrates the good harvest and the hard work that went into making it happen.

“Lammas” is the Christian-ized name for the festival, which comes from “loaf” “mass” meaning feast of bread (not kidding) when people would bring the first loaves from the new grain to mass as an offering. The “first fruits” idea.

I remember my grandfather staring out at the flat Texas horizon this time of year, hour on hour, day after day, trying to intuit how long he could let the wheat and maize stand and continue to get plump. Harvest too soon and the grain was puny; wait too long and you ran the risk that rains would take you by surprise and destroy everything.

The metaphor is metaphoring, as they say.

The take-away:

NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME in the year, cosmically speaking, to consider what your “HARVEST” means to you.

• What did you plant 6 months ago, and is it ready to harvest? Or does it need a bit more time in the ground?

• Do you need to water and nurture something with more intention for a bit?

• Do you need to take the brave step and start reaping something NOW?

• (your own thoughts here)

SOUND BITE THIS WEEK:

In the intro as we are settling in, I talk about (and demonstrate… so keep one eye open for the first bit) a TCM method I learned this week which triggers your nervous system to drop down into the restful state.

Well, maybe trigger is the wrong word, lol, but you know what I mean.

I tried it the night before, and dang if it didn’t actually work.

Essentially, you hold both palms up facing you, then clasp your left wrist with your right fingers so that they line up along the channel that runs directly under your left thumb.

TCM recognises superficial meridians and deep meridians … you are shooting for the deep meridian, so you will press a bit stronger, but not so it hurts or anything.

Only for about 60 seconds.

Then release. That’s it. Vagus nerve reset.

So simple, do it when you lie down to go to sleep for the night.

Worked for me, anyway. xo

Sound healing brings our mind (brainwaves) and body (cells) into balance through a process called “entrainment”, unique to sound therapy.

Our brain waves relax gently into the THETA brainwave frequency, which only usually happens when we are in deep sleep (which a lot of us don’t even reach these days).

And it is the brainwave state where the body releases into healing.

Give it a try.

A sound bath immersion is a beautiful way to gain clarity, release racing thoughts, and simply find deep, therapeutic relaxation.

In the intro as we are settling in, we talk about the moon’s nodes shifting today, first time in 18 months.

The take-away:

Moon = emotions = water element

And when the moon does a major shift, we can feel it in our heart and soul. Can feel disrupted, unsteady, out of kilter.

So this sound bath is especially crafted to bring calm to the emotions, allow the mind to settle, and give your body some peace.
