Hello friends! It’s time for the Sunday Night Check-In. Thanks for spending a few minutes with me. It feels like things have been extra busy lately (thus no Check-In last week!). This seems like a season of medical tests and follow-ups for both Maggy and me. Everything seems to be going along ok so far, but just taking care of some issues that have arisen for both of us. Many people have far worse health issues. I will be taking a week of vacation (staycation) this coming week. I guess you’re getting old if you are taking time off to go see doctors in specialty clinics out of town! Still, we are thankful for your prayers.

A new series of devotional posts is coming before long. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m looking forward to sharing those. They will come a couple of times a week during the series.

The whole world is talking about the loss of Dolly Parton. Always one of my favorites. Many people have written in profound ways about her compassion, the way she used her gifts to bless others. I can’t really add to that. I have a CD of old hymns recorded by Dolly, and I have enjoyed that over the years since I bought it at Dollywood. She was as comfortable with a rock cover, a country standard, a movie soundtrack, or a song about Jesus.

STILLWELL CROSSING - A NEW STORY!

For those who have been following my stories from Stillwell Crossing, a short story is going live on Amazon HERE. Just to let you know, it is short (I’m charging the lowest price Amazon will allow. Kindle Unlimited subscribers can read all of my books for free!). In addition, a compendium paperback/hardcover will be available with all three Stillwell Crossing novellas and the short story as a bonus! I will send out a notice when those become available. But if you’re anxious to know what Mason and Jeremy are up to, the short story is available as an ebook. I hope you enjoy it!

That makes 20 books! I’m so thankful to everyone who has read and encouraged me. My latest book, Hope Travels, will be given to all of our guests in the welcome bag at Forsythe. I hope that many will read it and hear the gospel within the story! I don’t think there will be another book this year. I’m working on a few, but they’re not nearly complete. I’m looking forward to a new full-length Stillwell Crossing book, maybe by Summer 2027 if the Lord wills!

AT FORSYTHE CHURCH this morning, we presented a message on the topic of stewardship. If you’d like to read the notes, they are available HERE. READING lately has mostly been limited to the Chronicles of Narnia, aside from my Bible reading. I’m reading The Silver Chair now. Yes, I’m Johnny-come-lately on these, but every book has been fantastic! After The Silver Chair, The Last Battle is the final one in the series. Aslan is on the move! I’m waiting anxiously for a few books to become available. Joshua Powell is one of my favorite authors! His new book, Nine Years Lost: A Christian Novel About Legacy, Contentment, and Lost Time, will be out mid-September. William Paul Young’s sequel is on the horizon: Return to the Shack: A Journey into Redemption. And Louise Penny’s Miss Wolcott’s Ghost: A Novel (Chief Inspector Gamache Novel Book 21) - coming in October - and which I pre-ordered in March if that tells you anything. So, I need to get busy with the books I have so I can dive into those when they arrive!

LISTENING. Well, I’m listening to songs about September, aren’t you? Sirius XM has a channel I never noticed before. The Message Worship plays mostly worship songs instead of just contemporary Christian music. Enjoying that a lot. It’s on channel 79 if you are a subscriber to that service.

WATCHING. I’m awaiting the return of my favorite shows. I’ve tried to pick out some interesting series on Netflix and other services. My daughter says I am officially banned from picking shows (I didn’t like them either! ha!). Watching anything great?

I got overwhelmed with Substack. There are fabulous writers here, but I can’t keep up with the flood of posts and notes … and I just kind of chilled on it for a bit. I miss a lot of the writers and am going to have to try to find a way to at least peek in … and I’m going to have to cull down the number of subscriptions… but I hate to … just torn about that. I don’t want to discourage anyone. I see some complaining about the service, but I still find it a great place to hang out, learn, be inspired, and enjoy. I do want to get back to recommending posts that I liked. To do that, I have to get back to reading them.

Greetings from North Louisiana, where we are setting records daily with the heat and trying to stay hydrated and cool! Welcome to new subscribers. The Check-In is just that—a moment where I share what’s going on with me. I invite you to share what’s happening in your world in the comments. This usually comes out on Sunday night, but I’ve missed the past two weeks. It’s been a flurry of activity, and I just couldn’t make myself sit down to write. Maybe the “end” of summer is supposed to be like that.

Last Sunday afternoon I enjoyed spending a few hours at the Sterlington Church of Christ talking about grief. We had four sessions: Getting Acquainted with Grief, The Journey Through Grief, Grief and the Holidays, and How to Help My Grieving Friends. I appreciate the privilege of speaking into the deep hurts that we carry in our losses. I was especially appreciative of the kind words of their preacher, Don DeLukie, and the receptive audience gathered.

Wednesday, August 19th, I’ll be speaking at the Ruston Church of Christ on the subject, “Stewardship that Glorifies God.” Little did I know months ago that I would be speaking two days after surgery (more on that in a minute!). If you are in the area and would like to visit the Ruston church, services begin at 6:30. I know they will welcome you. Their minister, Casey Clement, is doing an outstanding job.

Monday morning, I had outpatient surgery at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Two stents were placed in my left femoral artery. I felt pretty rugged for about 24 hours afterward, but started to feel better this afternoon. I appreciate the many prayers for my health—and for Maggy who is a superstar at taking care of me.

FORSYTHE

At Forsythe Church of Christ this past Sunday, we concluded our series through the letter to the Colossians. Connected to that, we will study Philemon this coming Sunday, Lord willing. It’s a Third Wednesday at Forsythe this week, so we will be enjoying a meal together. If you’re local, come enjoy some good food and conversation. READING

After reading The Magician’s Nephew and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, I have completed the next two books in The Chronicles of Narnia. The Horse and His Boy and Prince Caspian were as engaging as the first two books. I am looking forward to starting The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. What a gift C. S. Lewis was to the world. This week I picked up Casey Clement’s new book Raising Faithful Generations: Building a Biblical Foundation for Children in a Changing World. I look forward to getting his other new book, Running the Field: Guarding the Heart of the Preacher. Another new book that I acquired is Your Labor Is Not in Vain: 30 Christ-Centered Meditations Throughout Scripture by Luke Dockery.

LISTENING

Right now I’m listening to Integrity’s Still Worship & Andrew Osenga. This is ambient worship guitar music that is engaging enough to enjoy but not distracting when one is reading or thinking.

WATCHING

We watched the popular Ride or Die on Amazon Prime. Great story, great cast, terrible language (seems to be the description of most shows these days). This season of Alone is, I think, about to come to an end. This is the 13th season, and I have enjoyed them all, but this season is pretty boring. I think the participants are extra good at what they do, and there haven’t been any harrowing mistakes or scary episodes. But I know I couldn’t be a survivalist like this. It will be interesting to see who walks away with the cash. We had never watched Rob Lowe’s trivia-driven game show called The Floor, but we watched the first season, and I would say it was pretty entertaining! Finally, in desperation to find anything fun to watch, we watched two Bond films. Sean Connery in Goldfinger and From Russia With Love, followed by The Spy Who Loved Me with Roger Moore. We didn’t watch all of that this week, of course. What are you watching that you really enjoy?

This coming Sunday, August 16th, I am going to be speaking about grief recovery at the Sterlington, LA Church of Christ from 2-4 in the afternoon. Everyone is invited to attend.

What I like most about August is that it serves as a gateway to September, and then my favorite months of the year follow. But for now, we roast.

I enjoyed so much our time in Mississippi last week. We enjoyed our lodging at The Inn on Whitworth. It was our third time staying there, and it never disappoints. OK, this time, the elevator was out…but… it was still a super place to stay.

It was enjoyable in many ways, but it was still nice to get home to Louisiana. I was happy to be back with my church family at Forsythe.

It’s past time for the Sunday night Check-in! Thanks for taking a minute to catch up with me. Welcome new subscribers! This week Maggy and I are in Brookhaven, Mississippi. I am speaking six times in a series of messages on the theme “Walking With Jesus,” emphasizing daily discipleship at the Mount Zion Church of Christ. Sunday we talked about Bible study, Grace, and Prayer. Tonight I’ll be speaking on leaning ln the Lord during times of grief. Tuesday is temptation and repentance. I will finish the series Wednesday night with some thoughts about the return of Christ.

The people here are warm, hospitable, and welcoming. Mt. Zion is the oldest church in this county with over 125 years of service and spreading the gospel. The current preacher is Zach Fleming and it is easy to see how much the church here loves him and his family. We have spent a good amount of time with the former minister, who remains a member, Ronnie Lofton. Ronnie and Sharon have been great hosts, coming to pick us up and sharing great conversation. Ronnie was a close friend of Maggy’s brother, Dickie, when they were young and single many years ago. If you are in the area, come visit Monday - Wednesday night at 7pm!

Sunday at Forsythe Church, Daniel Kirkendall presented the morning message. I have heard that he did his usual great job! I appreciate the study and effort Daniel puts into his messages. Next Sunday we will have a meal together following Bible class. If you are in the Monroe area, come visit and stay for good company and great food!

My new book, Hope Travels, made its debut last week. It is the story of a Bible and the various people who owned it across the years. It has a ‘true story’ element to it, but it is fiction. There is a discussion guide included. It would make a great read for a book club or even a Bible class to read together and discuss. I enjoyed writing this story so much and I hope you enjoy reading it. It is free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers - and not expensive for everyone else! If you liked the story a nice rating and review on Amazon goes a long way in helping me get the word out!

August is around the corner and that means no let up in the summer heat. I hope all you summer people are enjoying yourselves. Hello everyone! It’s time for the Sunday Night Check-In. Welcome, especially new subscribers. I’m glad you’re here and invite you to say howdy in the comments. It is summertime, so no surprise that we are writing from the fiery furnace of North Louisiana. Projected highs in the 100s this coming week have us being mindful of staying hydrated.

Yesterday was my wedding anniversary. Thirty-nine years ago, I married my favorite girl, and she has remained by my side. Like most men, I married way above myself. No one knows how many days they have left on this earth, but I hope all of mine will be spent together with Maggy.

This coming Sunday, I will begin a series of sermons at the Mt. Zion Church of Christ, located near Brookhaven, Mississippi. I will be offering some lessons under the theme of Walking With Jesus. If you are in the area, I hope you’ll come out and visit. Sunday times are 9:30, 10:30, and 5 pm. Weeknights at 7 pm. Zach Flemming is their preacher.

HOPE TRAVELS is my newest book that will become available (I hope) later this week. I have a few early readers, but would be happy to have one or two more. It is a short story, I believe, rich in meaning and encouragement. Either send me an email or let me know in the comments if you’d like to read it and write a few sentences in review.

What’s happening in North Louisiana is HEAT. It’s so hot that the workers down at Popeye’s are jumping in the fry vat to cool off! What other “It’s so hot…” jokes can you put in the comments?

I’ve been enjoying the Whatnot app and, honestly, have bought some things I didn’t need just for the fun of it. I am going to have to rein that in. Whatnot is kinda like Ebay on steroids. I also bought some things to sell on Marketplace. I won’t get rich, but it’s a fun hobby (unless I end up with a bunch of stuff nobody wants!). If you wanted to give it a try, use this link, and we’ll both get credits to spend!

Instagram has, for the most part, been something I looked at here and there. I’ve been using it a bit more lately. I look for humor (of course - there’s plenty) but also, there are so many great devotional videos that have been a blessing. When I first got Insta, I only subscribed to family. I didn’t realize it would become the main social media for a lot of people. Like all social media, it’s a mixed bag. Follow me HERE if you are interested. Reading

This week I finished The Bones at Point No Point by D.D. Black. This is the first of 14 books featuring fictional P.I. Thomas Austin. I enjoyed it a lot. The crime featured in this book is gruesome, but not overly exploited. In our Bible reading group this week, we will finish 1 Chronicles and then read Hosea.

Also, I was an early reader for Gary Roe’s new book called Walking With God Through Grief: Devotions and Affirmations for Grieving Hearts. It was just released this past week. Gary is a Christian counselor in Texas who has several books on grief available. This one has 90 devotions. I think it would be a great gift for someone suffering through a loss. Gary is gentle, faithful, and helpful.

Listening

With the death of Bonnie Tyler this past week, I found this medley of her hits with Ben Zucker. There’s a German language introduction, but the songs are in English. This was from 2017.

Watching

Last week, I mentioned that The Agency had a new season uploaded. I watched the first episode, and I was not very enchanted. The intense profanity and confusing plotline were a turnoff for me. I did spend almost an hour cruising around the different streaming services and came up empty-handed. I did watch the first episode of Downton Abbey - at least I knew I would enjoy it! READING

In the past few weeks, I finished a few books. ALL SYSTEMS RED: THE MURDERBOT DIARIES, BOOK ONE by Martha Wells was interesting! I mostly listened to the audiobook. I enjoyed the read! I was unaware of this science fiction series until I saw an ad for the show it spawned on Apple TV. Since I do not subscribe to Apple TV, I haven’t seen it. At some point, a new season of Severance will be available, and I’ll subscribe to watch that and maybe catch up with the murderbot series. I also read LOST IN WILDERNESS by A. Viegar. It is a short read, but highly repetitive, about a group of boys who head out on their own to explore the interior of an island, not realizing the danger they would face. It’s a good setup for a story, but I can’t recommend it. It is not vulgar nor violent; it’s just boring. I also read Axel Shrugged: The Misadventures of a Runaway Teen (A Christian novel). About a third of the way into this book, I was ready to put it on the DNF shelf (Did Not Finish!). But I persevered and, actually, by the end of the book, I was so glad I stuck it out. This book has heavy Christian themes, and that was not a problem for me, of course. I ended up enjoying it after all. In our Bible reading program, we are in 1 Chronicles this week.

LISTENING

This week I’ve been listening to a new video podcast called Faith in Five. It features brief conversations between my friend Cecil May III, and his son, Cecil May IV (and, yes, there is a Cecil May V - see episode three!). These are not highly produced and fancy - they are just faith conversations that are appealing and encouraging. That makes it a special podcast to me.

WATCHING

We are almost at the end of the two seasons of NCIS: ORIGINS. It’s not my favorite show ever, but the characters have grown on me. I’m looking forward to Michael Fassbender in a second season of THE AGENCY on Paramount+. ALONE on the History Channel, Season 13, is well underway. Winter is coming. How long will the contestants be able to survive on their own? Two have already tapped out. Eight remain!

I’ve been in a photography slump lately. I attribute it to the heat and not taking the time to get out in nature. That’s something I need to fix (nature, not the heat!).

In 1938, Irving Berlin was America’s most successful songwriter. At 50 years old, he had lived through a world war and could see another coming with the rise of Nazi Germany. He wanted to write a great song about peace, but he had trouble getting the words to come. He remembered a lyric he wrote while he was serving in the Army in 1918. He found the song in a trunk where he stored song remnants and ideas. He made a few changes and searched for the right singer to introduce the song to America.

A singer with her own radio show that millions listened to was a natural choice. Kate Smith sang “God Bless America” on November 11, 1938, as part of her Armistice Day broadcast. Within days, it was being hailed as the new national anthem. Kate Smith was booked to sing it at major league baseball games and the 1939 World’s Fair. In 1940, both the Republican and Democratic parties adopted the song as their theme. Berlin set up a trust, and all proceeds from the song went to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.

In the wake of 9/11, the song took on new life. Celine Dion performed it on television and her version climbed into the top 40. Irving Berlin lived to be 101, passing away in 1989. His daughter, Mary Ellin Barrett, said, “I understood that that song was his ‘thank you’ to the country that had taken him in. It was the song of the immigrant boy who made good.”

Today we are grateful for the freedoms to worship, to serve in the name of the Lord, to proclaim the gospel, to read our Bibles, and to share the story of Jesus. While the world writhes hopelessly in the mud of isolation, polarization, racism, injustice, and propaganda, Christians have light to shine into the darkness. It is appropriate to pray for God to bless America (and every nation). But it is also appropriate for us to take advantage of our freedoms to broadcast the gospel of grace and the wonder of Jesus —both in our country and abroad. As our country celebrates 250 years, let us be reminded of the greatness of the mission these freedoms present.

It’s time for the Sunday Night Check-In! I’m glad you are here, especially new subscribers. I spent this week trying to get back in the swing of things after being on vacation for a week. We have had some stormy weather in North Louisiana, but nothing like the deluge across South Louisiana and Mississippi. Having been through a flood, it is hard to watch others go through that kind of suffering.

Happy Father’s Day to everyone. Like a lot of people, Father’s Day is a little complicated for me. I’m grateful that God blessed me with many fathers of the faith in my life. Still, I’m glad there is a Father’s Day because I love seeing dads embrace their role and lead their families through service and grace.

I’m hearing from those who have read the third entry in the Stillwell Crossing series that they are enjoying it! That makes me happy. I certainly enjoyed writing them. If you have read it, a rating and brief review on Amazon would make a huge difference in helping me get the word out. This morning at Forsythe, I spoke about Hezekiah’s Heart. You can find the notes to that sermon HERE. Everyone’s invited to come out and be encouraged by these young voices lifting up the name of the Lord! Our collection this month is for the St. Francis Cancer Center. We are collecting grippy socks and hard candy to offer some comfort to the patient. Hello friends! It’s time for the Sunday Night Check-In! Welcome to new subscribers - so glad you’re here. Our family enjoyed the past week in Ellijay, Georgia. It was made even more special by the presence of our granddaughter, who was able to take a week off and spend the time with us. Ellijay is a beautiful place in North Georgia. Our cabin had a large deck. We enjoyed watching the deer wander by and being able to be outside without being swarmed by mosquitoes! A favorite part of our week there was a visit to Amicalola Falls State Park. The lodge there is spectacular, but we did not stay there. Beautiful part of the country!

I haven’t processed my photos from the trip yet, but I look forward to sharing them when I have a chance to do that. We are glad to be home and looking forward to getting back in the flow of things here.

My editor has sent me the corrected version of Stillwell Crossing, Book Three! I have some work to do before I can release it, but I am looking forward to sharing it with readers. READING

This week, I read Axel Shrugged: The Misadventures of a Runaway Teen by Mark Geiser. This book is presented as a Christian novel, and it is. I’m not sure why I downloaded this book (free with Kindle Unlimited), and I almost didn’t finish it. For the first half of the book, I found no characters I really liked. But I kept reading, and I am really glad I did. As it ended up, the story brought some tears to my eyes, and I appreciated the buildup of the plot after all. Goodreads says that I have read 36 books this year, but I see a couple of duplicates in the list for some reason. In our Bible reading program, we finished 1 Kings, Jonah, Philemon, and now we are in 2 Kings.

It’s time for the Sunday Night Check-In! Welcome to new subscribers. We will be brief tonight, as we have a road trip tomorrow. Please pray for our safe journey to North Georgia for a week away.

One of my blessings this week has been the reviews for The Heavenward Trail. I think most authors publish their books and wonder if they will be meaningful to anyone else. At Forsythe Church this morning, I offered a message on “The Priesthood of Believers.” Notes and audio can be found HERE. We had a great fellowship meal after class today. (My friend Steven Clark Goad calls them ‘bellyship’ meals…which is triggering if not accurate!). We have a crew headed to Honduras for a mission trip tomorrow. We gathered them up and prayed for them this morning - and will keep on praying for them.

This week, I finished The Last Mandarin by Louise Penny and Melissa Fung. Outstanding international intrigue and a twisty plot involving US/China relations and Artificial Intelligence. It’s a great read. I also finished L. A. Dobbs’ Telling Lies: A Sam Mason K-9 Dog Mystery Book 1. Lucy the dog plays a pivotal role in this story that launches a series. I loved this story and especially that it was not graphic or filled with profanity. There are nine books in the series, so I’m ready to engage Book 2 - maybe while on vacation!

At Forsythe Church today, we talked about the Parable of the Sower/Soils under the question, “What Kind of Heart Do I Have?” The notes and audio are HERE. We have a fellowship meal this coming Sunday after Bible Class. If you are local, we would love to have you come see what we are about. Keep our mission team in your prayers as they prepare to travel to Honduras. They are leaving on the 8th and have a packed schedule to keep while they are there.

READING

When a mentor met his friend at the coffee shop, he didn’t know that this would turn into a weekly meeting of four. This is a delightful and interesting story of those meetings and how lives were changed when there was a renewed focus on calling, gifting, and discovery. The mentor leading this little group of interested young adults helps them find new pathways forward. An interesting feature is that the material the mentor uses is available in the back of the book. David Blanchard, in Coffee at Angie’s, has constructed a useful, readable, helpful resource that I think especially young adults would find a blessing. As an old adult, I still found it enjoyable, and with plenty of great leadership wrapped in a fictional story that delivers a great experience. David is on Substack HERE, but does not appear to be active.

I didn’t know much about writing and publishing books almost exactly two years ago when I put JESUS LIKES YOU out there for folks to read! It has eighteen reviews and thirty-four ratings! Thanks to everyone who helped run it up the Amazon charts to #1 more than once! Now that I have twenty books on Amazon (LINK), there is a little less excitement when a new one goes live! I certainly understand.

My foray into fiction has been a lot of fun. I loved writing the story of Mason and Jeremy and their investigations in fictional Stillwell Crossing. Books one and two are out, and book three is in the hands of my editor right now. Book Two just became available a few days ago (LINK). Since I never intend to make a living selling books, my main goal is to make back my expenses in getting the book out there. So, thank you to everyone who buys my books! It gives me the ability to work on the next one!

I buy advertising in email lists that often have qualifiers. The book has to be free or on sale (I often offer one or more of my ebooks free of charge around the first of the month). The book usually has to have five reviews for them to run the ad. So, as you can see, it is vitally important to have ratings and reviews—things I did not know a few years ago when I started this author journey!

• The Heavenward Trail: A Devotional Companion to Colossians is live and has two excellent reviews, but I would love to have a couple more. I received paperback copies this week, and they look so nice! The hardcovers arrived today, and I’m very pleased. This is a study of a book that is often overlooked, but it is power-packed!

• Stillwell Crossing, Book Two currently has no ratings or reviews. Amazon does not permit me to pay for reviews. Truthfully, I only want those who have read the book and who can honestly leave a positive review and rating to do so. I have five available if someone would like a free ebook to read, with the understanding that you will leave a review and rating. I have only had one person ask for this one, so four are available.

• Stillwell Crossing, Book Three is the finale of the trilogy of novellas. An ebook that is currently undergoing edits is available. Again, if five people were interested in reading and rating/reviewing, that would be awesome.

• Hope Travels is my next fictional novella. It is a short read, a story based on the life of an old Bible and those who owned it across the years. I will make five available as well. This one is unedited, and you will encounter grammatical errors, but the story is readable and relatable.

What else is going on? I learned this week that one of my professors at Magnolia Bible College passed away. Don Taylor was always a prince of a man. He was a missionary, writer, teacher, husband, father, and grandfather. I have several of his books that he sent me after a long conversation on the phone a few years ago. After leaving Magnolia Bible College, he spent twenty years teaching at Freed-Hardeman University. One of my favorite memories of Don was when we drove from Kosciusko to Greenville, Mississippi so that he could teach his class on Revelation. I enjoyed those trips so much and the study as well. Much love to his wife, Virginia, and his three children and their families. His obituary is HERE.

At Forsythe Church this morning, I offered a message on “Ten Ways to Get More Out of Your Bible.” Notes and audio can be found HERE. This past week, we were able to return to our tradition of having a meal together on the third Wednesday of each month. It was not only delicious, it felt so nice to be able to all eat together in a newly expanded facility. Next week is a “Fifth Sunday,” which means all of our contribution goes to paying down our expanded fellowship hall. This week I finished a couple of books.

Michael Whitworth’s Life in the Shadow of Death: A Biblical and Experiential Guide to Grief. This little book about grief is packed with information about the experience of grief, how to speak to and love on those who are hurting, and what to expect of yourself in times of loss. Michael shares his own personal experiences with grief. He also deals with some areas of grief we do not often recognize as grief, such as divorce and miscarriage. Filled with Scripture and faith, this is an excellent guide and informational source to help us navigate an area we will all face. Follow Michael on Substack HERE and his podcast HERE.

Mike Sprouse’s Words to Live By: Reflections for a Better Life. I loved reading through Mike’s thoughts about having a better life. He draws from the wisdom of a wide variety of thinkers to cultivate a resource that is valuable for everyone. I think it would be a great book for a college graduate just embarking on the journey of life, a couple that is just married and starting their family, or even someone old like me! With more than just positivity, Mike accumulated wisdom from his own personal experiences, well-known writers, and the Bible, resulting in an excellent guide for living. Dean Jarvis’ Aunt Sally’s Gnomes was a fun and delightful read about a young man with a special aunt who leaves him with a surprising inheritance! I enjoyed the joyful discoveries that he makes as he grows in understanding that a wonderful colony of entertaining creatures is found in Aunt Sally’s backyard! Obituary for Ronnie D. Teague

Remembrances

My earliest memories of Forsythe Church of Christ will always be associated with four men in particular: White Graves, Micah Harper, Mike Riley, and Ronnie Teague. These four men were the elders who called me to serve as a preaching minister over eighteen years ago. From the beginning, I had confidence in this team of leaders—each one gifted, and that certainly included Ronnie.

If I had to select a verse that described Ronnie, it would be Ephesians 4:2, which says, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” That is Ronnie.

Because he was retired, Ronnie spent a good deal of time at the church building. As others have mentioned, he had special skills as a “Mr. Fix-it.” If I ever even hinted at needing help, he immediately set out to solve the problem. When it came to repairs and upkeep, Ronnie had a partner in crime, Donnie Franklin. “Ronnie and Donnie” could fix just about anything, and they did so with smiles, joyful conversation, and happy spirits. Their deep friendship was a joy to observe.

Ronnie had his sayings he liked to use. Whenever something was funny, he would laugh and say, “What a boy!” When we talked about working with a community business that might not have done a good job, he urged us to find someone who could do the job right. His saying was, “This is not romance, it’s business.” When I told him it was good to see him at church, he always said, “You’re the important one, not me.” He was wrong.

Ronnie was also a friend to many others in the church. He spoke to everyone and made each person feel loved and welcomed. The Teagues and the Solleys share a friendship that spans many years. I’ve heard plenty of stories about the fishing exploits of Ronnie and Kenny—though I’m not sure I believed all of them! But I never doubted their love for each other as brothers. That much was clear.

Ronnie loved his sons, his daughter, and their families. He spoke of them often and with great pride. When they visited for services at Forsythe, his smile never seemed to leave his face.

Above all these relationships, Ronnie loved Billie. He often called her “Bill,” and I never heard him speak of her with anything but kindness and affection. You can learn a lot about a man by how he speaks of his wife when she is not around.

Ronnie was completely devoted to Billie, and it’s easy to see why. Her outward beauty is only surpassed by the inward beauty of a woman devoted to God and to caring for others. Together, they were quite a team for many years, working in countless ways to serve and care for others. After 62 years of marriage, this will be a difficult road ahead.

The last few years have been hard. I commend this family for the way they gave everything to support, love, and care for Ronnie as his health declined. They helped him maintain his dignity and, even in the most difficult moments, never lost their respect for the man he has always been in their lives. That is a powerful legacy for his grandchildren to have witnessed.

So while I hate to say goodbye to my friend Ronnie, I am grateful for where he is now. He has stepped into glory, saved by the blood of Jesus. I can imagine him saying, “I’m just glad to be here.” And if there are any repairs needed on the streets of gold, I imagine he and Donnie are already hard at work. However long it may be, I know he will be watching for his sweet Bill.

Our tears are for ourselves and for the empty place that will remain for some time. The Psalmist reminds us that our tears are not wasted. “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book” (Psalm 56:8-9 NLT).
