My plea to Democratic Socialists and the far left. America’s diversity makes ideological purity a terrible national electoral strategy if you want Democrats to win the House and Senate and state offices. I am ideologically far-left, but in this political environment and with two more years of Trump, being pragmatic and winning are the most important things to me.

One of the biggest mistakes some make is assuming that what wins elections in New York City, Denver, San Francisco, Boston or other overwhelmingly blue communities will win elections across America. The United States is not one electorate. It is hundreds of electorates shaped by geography, religion, ethnicity, culture, economics and history.

”All politics is local”

A progressive voter in Brooklyn may view “Democratic socialism” very differently from a Cuban-American voter in Miami whose family history is tied to Castro’s Cuba. A Jewish voter in South Florida may have very different political priorities from a young progressive on a college campus. A Black churchgoing voter in Georgia, a Latino Catholic voter in Arizona, a union household in Michigan, a suburban mother in Pennsylvania, and a white evangelical voter who might occasionally be persuadable in the Midwest are not interchangeable voters.

Yet I hear people living in the deepest-blue parts of America talk as though their particular version of Democratic politics represents what “the people” want. It doesn’t. It represents what a particular constituency wants. That is the danger of the political bubble.

Democratic socialists can win overwhelmingly in districts where the electorate already embraces progressive politics. That proves they can win those electorates. It does not prove that the same candidates, rhetoric and labels can win Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada or other competitive congressional districts scattered across the country.

A national political party has a fundamentally different job. It has to build a coalition among people who don’t agree on everything. That means progressives. Moderates. Labor. Black voters. Latinos. Jewish voters. Asian-American voters. Young voters. Older voters. Urban voters. Suburban voters. Rural voters. Straight voters, LGBTQ voters, Religious voters, and secular voters. College graduates and people who never attended college.

And here’s the uncomfortable reality: if you insist that everyone in that enormous coalition must embrace your particular ideology to qualify as an “actual Democrat,” you aren’t building a movement. You’re making the coalition smaller. Moderate Democrats are not fake Democrats. Progressive Democrats are not fake Democrats. They represent different constituencies within a very large and complicated party.

The question isn’t which faction can prove that it is the purest. The question is: How do Democrats assemble 50% plus one in purple places where elections are actually competitive? Because America isn’t Brooklyn. It isn’t San Francisco. It isn’t rural Alabama either. It’s all of them.

Anyone who forgets that may win the ideological argument inside their own bubble, while Republicans win the election.

The United States has repeatedly defined “desirable” immigrants as white, Protestant, European, politically acceptable, economically exploitable, and culturally preferable, while excluding, policing, detaining, deporting, or criminalizing people of color and other religions.

This is the historical record. The names of the targeted groups have changed over the years; Chinese, Irish, Italians, Jews, Japanese, Mexicans, Muslims, Arabs, Haitians, Venezuelans, Palestinians, and others, but the political playbook has remained remarkably consistent: manufacture fear, portray immigrants as a threat to white Protestant culture, and promise “security” through exclusion.

• 1790 – Citizenship restricted to “free white persons.”

• 1798 – Alien and Sedition Acts expanded deportation powers.

• Early 1800s – Restrictions aimed at limiting the migration of free Black people following the Haitian Revolution.

• 1850s – The Know-Nothing movement targeted Irish and German Catholic immigrants.

• 1875 – The Page Act effectively barred many Chinese women from entering the U.S.

• 1882 – The Chinese Exclusion Act became the first federal law banning immigration based on race and nationality.

I will make this short, direct, and to the point. I oppose the policies of the State of Israel. I oppose AIPAC’s influence on American politics. I support Palestinian self-determination and basic human rights, and I denounce in the strongest of terms Israel’s slaughter of innocent civilians in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. Israel’s abuse of the Palestinians has fueled many decades of chaos and death in the Middle East. It has created Iran. It has created Hamas. It has created Hezbollah. It laid the ground for the unspeakable, unjustifiable terrorism and horrors of October 7th. That can never be condoned, but thinking people should look at the big picture, at the history of the region, and at least understand desperation while condemning it in the strongest of terms.

Often, people act like the current turmoil in Iran and the Middle East came from nowhere. As if millions of Palestinians being occupied, bombed, starved, displaced, and denied basic rights for more than half a century is somehow unrelated to literally every horrific act of terrorism, explosion, proxy war, and regime tension today. As if our attacking Iran was not because we knew Israel was going to. Marco Rubio said exactly this today. Look at what’s happened.

Israel’s repeated assaults on Gaza, with the United States help, killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, including children, and reduced entire cities and neighborhoods to rubble. United Nations-backed experts have documented credible allegations of sexual violence, disproportionate attacks on civilians, and destruction of health infrastructure. Palestinians have testified about horrific abuses in Israeli custody, including beatings, starvation, and humiliation. International legal bodies have raised serious concerns about violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territory.

This isn’t “ancient history.” This is a current, continuous injustice, and it has consequences. You don’t create two generations of people living under blockade, occupation, and daily violence without generational trauma. You don’t explode schools, hospitals, and civilian infrastructure without deep, long-term rage. You don’t treat an entire population as disposable without feeding every extremist ideology in the region. And don’t pretend this doesn’t link to Iran:

Israel’s broader militarized posture and drive to exert dominance across the region, whether through Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, or now direct attacks on Iranian territory, hasn’t reduced conflict. It has expanded it. Every time Israel bombs civilian infrastructure, arrests Palestinians without fair process, or imposes collective punishment, it sends a message: might makes right, and Palestinian lives don’t matter. That’s not security. That’s sowing the seeds of perpetual war.

And now this has spiraled into open warfare with Iran, causing more destruction, more deaths, and more suffering across the Middle East, all because the underlying injustice was never addressed. If you think Iran’s hostility is unrelated to decades of Palestinian suffering, if you think you can ignore the carnage in Gaza and elsewhere and still wonder why the region explodes, then you’re part of the problem.

Children deserve safety. Civilians deserve dignity. Entire nations deserve an end to occupation and discrimination, not endless war. And until we confront the root causes, not just the headlines, there will be no peace, no stability, and no end to the bloodshed. Wake up. Stand up. The cycle of violence didn’t start yesterday, and it won’t end tomorrow unless we demand justice for all. Including the Palestinian people, who no one seems to care about!

All of the following hostile actions have been ordered by Trump; in between his aggressive lobbying for the... wait for it. Nobel Peace Prize. Since taking office on January 20, 2025, the Trump administration has authorized military action in multiple regions across the globe. This summary includes confirmed uses of U.S. military force abroad: airstrikes, naval engagements, and sustained military campaigns. This is not a partisan accounting. It is simply a factual inventory of force resulting in thousands of deaths.

It is not a polling bump. It is human blood.

An Undeclared War:

Congress did not debate this. The American people did not vote on it. There was no formal declaration of war. The Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war for a reason: because sending young Americans into lethal danger is supposed to require public accountability. It is supposed to be slow, deliberate, and visible. When military escalation happens without that process, it should alarm every citizen, regardless of party. Because once war becomes something a president can initiate unilaterally, the threshold for using it inevitably lowers.

Without transparent answers, suspicion grows and justifiably so. Especially given the repeated attempts at detraction by President Trump.

Even if one argues that military action was strategically necessary, civilian deaths carry moral consequences. Hundreds of Iranian civilians, if those numbers hold, are not abstractions. They are shopkeepers, students, parents, and children. When civilian casualties mount, America’s claim to moral leadership erodes. And when moral authority erodes, long-term strategic costs follow. We cannot condemn violence abroad while casually accepting it as collateral damage when it is politically convenient and self-serving to the administration.

If war is ever used, even implicitly, to shift headlines, suppress scrutiny, boost approval, or reward political allies, that is not merely cynical. It is immoral.

The lives of service members and civilians are not bargaining chips. The lives of foreign civilians are not acceptable distractions. The presidency is not a shield against accountability — despite what rulings come from the Trump Supreme Court.

What This Moment Regarding Iran Demands:

This is not about partisan outrage. It is about constitutional responsibility and moral gravity. We should demand:

• Immediate congressional hearings

• Full transparency about the decision-making process

• A clear articulation of objectives

• An honest accounting of civilian casualties

And we should refuse to normalize the undeclared Trump war as just another news cycle.

Final Thought:

If three American service members are dead, we owe them more than hashtags. We owe them a country that does not treat war as a political instrument. If hundreds of Iranian civilians are dead, we owe them the honesty to confront what that means about us.

And if escalation happened in the shadow of a domestic political crisis, we owe ourselves the courage to ask why. Because once war becomes a tool of distraction, democracy itself becomes collateral damage.

They say those who ignore history are guaranteed to repeat it. In the context of Trump's actions in Venezuela and threatening Cuba and Greenland, does anyone with a modicum of awareness and intellect think Russia, China and North Korea and going to do nothing? A new Axis power coalition could result; with the threat of WWIII staring us all in he face. I am NOT an alarmist; I think that I am a realist that looks to history for lessons.

Soldiers in the Streets

This has been on my mind for quite a while now. I’ve made every attempt to convince myself that I was worrying needlessly, but I can no longer entertain that mindset. The United States is witnessing a dangerous drift toward the militarization of domestic life.

Lately, we have seen armed troops, tactical units, and militarized police deployed into American neighborhoods under the justification of “restoring order.”

But let us be clear: when citizens see soldiers in fatigues standing at intersections, rifles raised, or armored vehicles rolling past their homes, the government is not “protecting freedom.” It is conditioning the population to fear dissent.

Trump’s presidency normalized this. In 2020, peaceful demonstrators in Washington D.C., were forcibly removed with tear gas and rubber bullets so Trump could stage a photo-op with a Bible in front of St. John’s Church. The symbolism was chilling: a president using armed force against his own people to create a propaganda image. That moment should have burned into our collective memory as a warning.

The Authoritarian Playbook

Every authoritarian regime follows a similar script:

• Delegitimize the press — call them “enemies of the people.”

• Undermine elections — claim fraud and erode public faith in voting.

• Deploy force domestically — present dissenters as enemies of the state.

Donald Trump has executed all three with precision. He has attacked journalists relentlessly. He continues to push the lie that the 2020 election was stolen. And he has openly called for the use of the Insurrection Act — an extraordinary measure intended for rebellion — to unleash the U.S. military on American cities.

History offers grim parallels. From Franco’s Spain to Pinochet’s Chile, leaders who turned their armies inward were not defending democracy. They were dismantling it.

Police or Occupying Army?

The militarization of local police is another piece of this puzzle. Trump loosened restrictions on the Pentagon’s “1033 Program,” which funnels surplus military equipment to civilian police departments. The result? Small towns now possess armored personnel carriers, grenade launchers, and battlefield gear.

These weapons are not meant for community policing. They are designed for war. And when police view citizens as combatants, the result is predictable: escalation, violence, and the erosion of trust between the public and law enforcement.

We are told this is “safety.” In reality, it is occupation.

When Civilian Control Erodes

One of the bedrock principles of American democracy is civilian control of the military. The Founders understood the danger of soldiers being turned inward against the people. That’s why the Posse Comitatus Act, passed in 1878, forbids the use of the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement.

Trump has repeatedly pushed against these norms. His calls to deploy active-duty soldiers in U.S. cities mark a dangerous step toward normalizing military involvement in civilian affairs. Retired generals, alarmed, have spoken out. But their warnings are being drowned out by political theater and the steady drip of normalization.

The Cost of Normalization
