It was groundbreaking when it was created. Rather than simply teaching more skills or extending a diver’s depth limit, it concentrated on the foundations that make all other diving work: buoyancy, trim, propulsion, stability, equipment configuration, teamwork and situational awareness.

However, the course was also trying to be too many things for too many people.

It had to serve relatively inexperienced recreational divers who wanted to improve their core skills, experienced divers encountering GUE for the first time, and divers preparing for cave or technical training. Those people did not necessarily need the same course—or need to reach the same outcome in the same amount of time.

GUE have therefore adapted their training pathway. Certified divers now have three principal options: Performance Diver, Basic Fundamentals and Technical Fundamentals. There is also a Doubles Primer for divers who need to develop experience in doubles.

These courses overlap, but they are not simply easy, medium and hard versions of the same class.

The right choice depends on where your diving is now—and where you want it to go next.

Performance Diver

Performance Diver is the most accessible introduction to GUE training.

It is normally conducted over two days and focuses heavily on the platform upon which everything else is built: balance, trim, buoyancy, stability and propulsion. It also introduces GUE’s standardised equipment, procedures and team-based approach.

The course includes gas sharing and ascent training, as well as the theory and use of nitrox. Depending on the course and the instructor, it may also include an experience dive in which the new skills are used during a normal dive rather than as isolated exercises.

Performance Diver can suit two apparently different groups.

The first is a diver who is relatively new, or who knows that their core skills need work. Perhaps you are still moving your hands to maintain position, struggling to stop precisely or finding that task-loading quickly disrupts your buoyancy.

The second is an experienced diver who wants focused coaching without immediately committing to a longer Fundamentals course. You do not need to be struggling to benefit from detailed feedback on how you move, think and control yourself underwater.

Performance Diver is therefore not “Fundamentals for people who aren’t good enough.” It is a valuable course in its own right, as well as a possible step towards further GUE training.

It can be completed using a single tank or doubles, although previous doubles experience—or a Doubles Primer—is required if doubles are used.

Choose Performance Diver if:

• You want a focused introduction to GUE’s approach.

• Your main priority is improving buoyancy, trim and propulsion.

• You want a shorter course before deciding what to do next.

• You would benefit from developing a stronger platform before taking Technical Fundamentals.

• You want access to GUE’s recreational training without needing the longer Basic Fundamentals course.

Basic Fundamentals

Basic Fundamentals is a broader and more intensive course, normally conducted over three days.

It develops the same foundational platform but provides more training time and adds skills including valve management and deploying an SMB. Like Performance Diver, it also includes gas sharing, ascent training, nitrox and GUE’s approach to equipment and teamwork.

It can be completed using either a single-tank or double-tank configuration.

Basic Fundamentals makes sense for a diver who wants the fuller Fundamentals experience but does not need the technical rating. You may be primarily interested in recreational diving but want more time, a wider set of skills and a more demanding assessment of your foundational diving.

It is important not to manufacture a progression advantage that does not really exist. Most GUE recreational courses available after Basic Fundamentals are also available after Performance Diver. The reason to choose Basic is therefore the additional training and broader course content—not because Performance Diver leaves you unable to continue within recreational GUE diving.

Basic can also suit someone who may consider cave or technical diving eventually but is not yet committed to that route. It develops a strong base without requiring the diver to enter Technical Fundamentals before the goal, equipment or experience is appropriate.

Choose Basic Fundamentals if:

• You want a more complete Fundamentals course than Performance Diver.

• Your goals are primarily recreational.

• You want more training time and a broader collection of foundational skills.

• You want to use a single-tank configuration.

• You may consider technical training eventually but are not yet ready to pursue it.

Technical Fundamentals

Technical Fundamentals is intended for experienced divers preparing to enter GUE cave, technical or CCR training.

The course is conducted in doubles and is normally four days long. It includes the same underlying attention to buoyancy, trim, propulsion, stability and teamwork, but the entry requirements, course intensity and expected level of performance are higher.

This distinction matters: Technical Fundamentals is not intended to teach someone how to dive doubles from the beginning.

Applicants need substantial overall diving experience, experience at depth and meaningful experience using doubles. The complete prerequisites are available on the official GUE Technical Fundamentals page.

Meeting the numerical requirements does not necessarily mean that Technical Fundamentals is the right immediate choice. You should arrive comfortable enough in doubles that the equipment is not consuming most of your attention. The course should be about developing your diving—not discovering for the first time how the cylinders affect your balance and movement.

Choose Technical Fundamentals if:

• Cave, technical or CCR training is your clear objective.

• You meet the formal experience requirements.

• You already have meaningful experience in doubles.

• You are prepared for a demanding four-day course.

• You want your foundational skills assessed against the standard needed for further technical training.

Where does Doubles Primer fit?

Doubles Primer is a one-day course designed to introduce divers to the safe and comfortable use of a double-tank configuration.

It covers equipment configuration, buoyancy and trim, familiarity with doubles and basic valve management. It is preparation, not a replacement for Fundamentals.

For a less-experienced diver who ultimately wants to progress towards cave, technical or CCR diving, Performance Diver followed by Doubles Primer will often be the best route.

Performance Diver allows you to concentrate first on your basic control, propulsion and teamwork. Doubles Primer then introduces the new equipment without requiring you to learn everything simultaneously. You can subsequently gain real diving experience in doubles before beginning Technical Fundamentals.

Depending on your circumstances and the available courses, the order may sometimes be reversed or the courses may be completed using different configurations. That is worth discussing with the instructor before booking.

Completing Doubles Primer also does not mean you should move immediately into Technical Fundamentals. You still need to complete the required non-training dives and become genuinely comfortable with the configuration.

That experience matters. A diver who has used those dives thoughtfully—adjusting equipment, refining balance and learning to move naturally—will be better prepared than someone who has merely accumulated the required number as quickly as possible.

So which course should you choose?

Start by asking what you want the training to achieve.

If you want focused coaching on the essential mechanics of diving, or a shorter introduction to GUE, choose Performance Diver.

If you want the fuller Fundamentals experience, with additional time and a broader set of skills, but do not need the technical rating, choose Basic Fundamentals.

If cave, technical or CCR training is your definite goal, and you already meet the experience requirements and are comfortable in doubles, Technical Fundamentals is the appropriate route.

If technical training is your eventual goal but you are relatively inexperienced or new to doubles, Performance Diver and Doubles Primer will probably provide the best preparation. You can then consolidate those skills through ordinary diving before taking Technical Fundamentals.

The best course is not necessarily the most advanced one you can enter. It is the one that gives you the most useful development from where you are now.

If you are unsure, speak to an instructor before booking. Tell them honestly about your experience, present equipment, current strengths and weaknesses, and what you eventually want to do. That conversation should identify the route most likely to help you—not simply the shortest route to the next qualification.

And it’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask:

Why?

If you’ve already got hundreds of dives, perhaps a Rescue Diver, Divemaster or even instructor qualification, why would you need another course covering things like buoyancy, trim and propulsion?

The honest answer is that you might not need it.

But if your goal is to become a better diver, rather than simply collect another certification, I think Fundamentals can be one of the most useful courses you take.

The important thing is understanding what the course is actually trying to achieve.

Fundamentals isn’t really about the fundamentals

Yes, Fundamentals covers trim, buoyancy, propulsion, equipment configuration, awareness and teamwork. These are all important skills, and they form the foundation for more complex diving.

But if you think the purpose of the class is simply to teach you how to frog kick or hover, you’re missing the bigger picture.

For me, the most valuable thing Fundamentals gives a diver is the ability to critically evaluate their own diving.

Most divers learn a technique, practise it until they can perform it reasonably well, and then move on. Once something is good enough to get the job done, there isn’t necessarily much incentive to question it.

Fundamentals gives you a framework for doing exactly that. It teaches you how to look at your own diving, identify weaknesses, understand why they’re weaknesses, and then work out how to improve them.

More importantly, those skills don’t disappear when the course finishes.

The most important skill you learn may not be a diving skill at all. It may be learning how to recognise what you need to improve next.

Learning a skill isn’t the same as understanding it

Take buoyancy as an example.

Many recreational divers aren’t really taught how to use their breathing to support stable buoyancy. Instead, they can end up using their lungs as a kind of secondary buoyancy compensator, holding themselves up with their lung volume and then using their BCD or fins to compensate for changes.

It can work perfectly well for normal recreational diving.

Until something goes wrong.

When a diver becomes stressed or task-loaded, conscious control starts to disappear and subconscious responses take over. Breathing changes, the carefully controlled lung volume disappears, and suddenly the buoyancy that seemed perfectly stable isn’t stable at all.

The problem isn’t simply that the diver doesn’t know how to hover. They haven’t necessarily understood why their buoyancy was working in the first place.

That distinction matters as diving becomes more complex.

Experienced divers can have the hardest time

This is one of the reasons I find Fundamentals particularly interesting.

I’ve taught divers with everything from a handful of dives to thousands of dives, including technical instructor trainers from other agencies. The course can be challenging for everyone, but not necessarily for the same reasons.

A diver with very little experience is often uncomfortable because almost everything is new. They haven’t had years to develop habits, so they can be surprisingly receptive to learning a different way of doing something.

A diver with a few hundred dives can be a different story.

They’ve become comfortable. They’ve developed techniques that work for them and repeated them hundreds of times. Asking them to change those techniques can feel like asking them to unlearn something they’ve already spent a lot of time learning.

And then there are the very experienced divers.

They may be more comfortable being challenged because they’ve learned that there is always more to learn. But they can also have another obstacle to overcome: ego.

Being an experienced diver doesn’t mean you have perfect skills.

Fundamentals isn’t about telling you that everything you’ve done is wrong

This is perhaps the biggest misconception I encounter.

Fundamentals isn’t about saying:

“Everything you’ve learned so far is irrelevant. Now we’ll teach you how to dive properly.”

If you already have excellent buoyancy, great. Let’s find something else to improve.

Maybe your backwards kick isn’t as good as your forward propulsion. Maybe your task loading could be better. Maybe your team awareness could improve. Maybe you have excellent personal skills but aren’t as good at recognising problems developing in another diver.

The point is to take the experience you already have and polish it.

That’s why I’ve had technical instructor trainers with thousands of dives come out of Fundamentals having learned new things and identified areas where they could improve. I’ve also had divers with only a handful of dives come away with dramatically better control and comfort in the water.

The starting point is different.

The process of improvement is the same.

But can’t I just practise these skills myself?

Of course you can.

A good diver can improve enormously through deliberate practice, video analysis, diving with people who are better than them and honestly evaluating their own performance.

In fact, that’s exactly the sort of behaviour Fundamentals should encourage.

The difficulty is knowing what you don’t know.

Having somebody watching you who can give you honest, specific feedback can accelerate that process enormously. And this is where instructor choice matters.

If you take Fundamentals, you should be prepared for honest feedback. Sometimes it will be uncomfortable. It shouldn’t be insulting, but it should be honest enough to tell you where you’re falling short and give you something useful to work on.

The objective isn’t to make you dependent on the instructor.

It’s to give you the tools to keep improving once the instructor is no longer there.

Who doesn’t need Fundamentals?

There is one obvious group of divers who probably don’t need it: people who have no interest in learning the GUE approach.

That’s perfectly reasonable.

Fundamentals isn’t a magic course that every diver needs to take. If you’re happy with your current approach to diving and have no interest in GUE’s approach to personal and team diving, there are plenty of reasons not to take the course.

It also isn’t a course for someone who simply wants another badge for their logbook.

Fundamentals is hard work. You have to be prepared to be challenged, receive criticism, practise things repeatedly and potentially change habits you’ve spent years developing.

If you’re looking for an easy certification, this probably isn’t it.

What if you’re not ready for Technical Fundamentals?

Not everyone who wants to improve their diving is ready for GUE Technical Fundamentals.

That’s one reason GUE’s Performance Diver course is interesting. It’s aimed at divers making the transition from recreational diving and focuses on improving foundational skills while remaining relevant whether or not you eventually move into technical diving. It can also be combined with courses such as Doubles Primer and Drysuit Primer where appropriate.

For some divers, that’s exactly the right next step.

For others, Technical Fundamentals is the natural progression towards technical, cave or CCR training. GUE describes Technical Fundamentals as preparation for its technical, rebreather and cave programmes, while also emphasising that the course can benefit divers who don’t intend to continue into advanced training.

The important thing is to choose training that matches where you are now, rather than where you want to be six months from now.

So, do you actually need Fundamentals?

No.

But that isn’t really the most useful question.

If you want to become a better diver, would you benefit from having someone critically evaluate your diving, challenge your assumptions and give you the tools to continue improving long after the course has finished?

That’s a much more interesting question.

Fundamentals isn’t valuable because it gives you a list of new skills. It isn’t valuable because it gives you another certification. And it isn’t about telling you that everything you’ve done before was wrong.

Its real value is that it gives you a framework for understanding your own diving and continuing to improve it.

For me, that’s the real point of Fundamentals.

It doesn’t give you an end point. It gives you better tools for working out what you need to improve next.

For me, technical diving isn’t really defined by the equipment you use or the depth you reach. Twinsets, stages, rebreathers, helium and decompression are all tools that allow us to do more complicated dives, but none of those things, on their own, make someone a technical diver.

What matters much more is the mindset and process behind the diving: taking responsibility for the dive, understanding the risks, planning appropriately, managing your gas and equipment, and being able to deal with problems as part of a team.

If that’s what we’re trying to develop, then the number of dives in someone’s logbook is a pretty poor measure of whether they’re ready.

So, how many dives do you need?

If someone asks me for a number, I don’t really have one.

I’ve seen divers with relatively few dives who are excellent learners and progress very quickly. I’ve also seen divers with hundreds of dives who struggle to change habits that have become deeply ingrained.

In fact, one of the things I’ve noticed over the years is that divers with around 200–300 dives can sometimes find learning new techniques particularly difficult. This isn’t a rule, but it is a pattern I’ve seen repeatedly.

At that stage, divers are usually comfortable and confident in the water. They’ve developed a way of doing things that works well enough for the diving they’ve been doing, and they’ve repeated those techniques hundreds of times. The problem comes when technical training asks them to change those habits.

Something that has been automatic for the last couple of hundred dives suddenly has to be done differently. A technique they thought they had mastered now requires conscious thought again. That can be surprisingly uncomfortable.

At the other end of the scale, divers with 1,000 or more dives will often find it easier to accept that there are things they can still learn or approaches that might be better than their existing ones. They’ve had enough experience to know there isn’t necessarily one way of doing everything.

Of course, there can be another problem at that level: ego. Being very experienced doesn’t automatically make someone open to being told that they could do something differently.

And then there are divers with fewer than 100 dives, who are often uncomfortable simply because so much of diving is still relatively new to them. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. If they have the right attitude, that unfamiliarity can actually make them very receptive to learning.

More dives aren’t necessarily better

I’m a big believer in getting more diving experience, but simply adding dives to your logbook isn’t necessarily going to make you more prepared for technical diving.

If you do the same dive, in the same conditions, with the same equipment, following the same guide, and make essentially the same decisions every time, you’re gaining experience, but you’re not necessarily developing the range of skills and judgement you’ll need when the diving becomes more demanding.

I’d much rather see a diver deliberately use their diving to develop. Dive in different locations and temperatures. Experience different visibility and environmental conditions. Work on buoyancy, trim and propulsion. Practise navigation. Understand your gas consumption. Become comfortable with your equipment and, if you’re going to progress into technical diving, start taking responsibility for planning and executing your own dives.

The point isn’t that 50 dives is better than 200. It’s that the value of those dives depends on what you’re doing with them. A thousand repetitions of essentially the same experience may be less useful for your development than a much smaller number of dives where you’re deliberately working on the things you need to improve.

There’s another trap: guided diving

Guided diving is fantastic, particularly when you’re visiting an unfamiliar location. A good guide can introduce you to sites you couldn’t easily explore yourself and make unfamiliar diving much easier.

But if almost all of your diving involves following somebody else, you can miss an important part of becoming a technical diver: taking responsibility for the dive.

Technical diving doesn’t mean becoming completely self-sufficient and never diving with anyone else. In fact, good teamwork is fundamental to technical diving. But you need to understand what is happening around you, make decisions, manage your own equipment and gas, and contribute to the team.

You can’t simply wait for the guide to tell you what to do.

One of the important transitions towards technical diving is moving from being taken diving to being responsible for diving. That means understanding why you’re doing something, rather than simply doing it because the person in front of you told you to.

The biggest indicator isn’t your dive count

If I had to choose one thing that tells me whether someone is likely to progress well in technical training, it wouldn’t be their number of dives.

It would be their attitude.

Are you open to doing things differently? Can you accept that something you’ve been doing for years might not actually be the best way of doing it? Are you prepared to be uncomfortable while you learn? Can you take criticism without becoming defensive? And are you willing to practise something repeatedly until you can do it reliably rather than simply getting it right once?

Those characteristics are far more important to me than whether someone’s logbook says 100, 200 or 500 dives.

Technical diving requires commitment. There isn’t really a quick option where you can learn a few new skills, buy some new equipment and suddenly be ready to do complex dives. The more complicated the diving becomes, the more important it is that the underlying skills and decision-making are solid.

That doesn’t mean you have to be an exceptional diver before you start technical training. Training exists to help you develop. But you do need to have the right attitude towards that process.

So when are you ready?

I’d turn the original question around.

Instead of asking “Have I done enough dives?”, ask yourself:

“Have I used the dives I’ve done to become the kind of diver who is ready to take on more responsibility?”

If you’ve got 75 dives and are still developing the basics, that’s fine. If you’ve got 300 dives and are extremely comfortable with your current way of diving, that’s fine too. Neither number tells me very much on its own.

What matters is whether you’re ready to learn.

For divers who aren’t quite ready for technical training, a course such as GUE’s Performance Diver can provide a structured way to develop foundational diving skills without immediately moving into technical training. For those who are ready to take that next step, GUE Technical Fundamentals is designed to develop the personal and team skills needed for technical diving.

The important thing is not to treat either course as a shortcut, but as part of a longer process of developing competence and experience.

Ultimately, technical diving doesn’t start when you buy a twinset, a rebreather or a collection of expensive equipment. It starts when you begin taking greater responsibility for your diving and deliberately developing the skills, judgement and mindset that allow you to deal with more complex situations.

So, how many dives do you need?

Enough to have developed the experience you need, but not so many that you’re unwilling to change.

And there’s only one way to find out what that means for you:

Go diving, and make every dive count.

As soon as someone books onto a Cave 1, Tech 1 or CCR Fundamentals class, I almost always get the same question:

“What should I be practising before I arrive?”

The answer is probably not what you expect.

The students who get the most from these classes aren’t the ones who’ve been trying to teach themselves new skills. They’re the ones who’ve spent a little time polishing the skills they already learned on GUE Fundamentals.

Every GUE class builds on the same foundation. If those core skills are automatic, you’ll have far more capacity to learn the new material.

Stability is everything

If I could ask every student to practise just one thing before arriving, it would be stability.

Can you hold your position mid-water without drifting?

Can you hover just above the bottom without disturbing the silt?

Can you stay completely stable while performing another task?

Whether you’re laying line in a cave, running a valve drill or managing a rebreather, your ability to remain stable makes every other skill easier.

When stability becomes automatic, your attention is free to focus on what you’re actually trying to learn.

Make your backwards kick dependable

Your backwards kick doesn’t need to be fast.

It doesn’t need to look beautiful.

It just needs to work every single time.

Being able to move backwards without changing your depth or trim is an essential control skill. If you’re still relying on your hands, finning forwards before reversing, or changing depth every time you back up, it’s worth spending some time refining it before your class.

Don’t forget unconscious diver recovery

This is one of the most valuable skills taught during Fundamentals, and it’s also one of the first to be forgotten.

Recovering another diver successfully demands buoyancy, trim, propulsion, communication and teamwork all at once. If you’ve not practised it since your Fundamentals class, find a teammate and spend an hour refreshing it.

You’ll be surprised how quickly it comes back.

The biggest mistakes I see

There are a few patterns that appear again and again.

The first is students trying to practise skills they’re about to learn on the course. I’ve seen people trying to teach themselves line laying, decompression gas switch procedures or CCR drills before they’ve even arrived.

Don’t.

That’s what the class is for.

Instead, spend your time refining the Fundamentals skills that those new skills are built upon.

Another common mistake is ignoring the basics because they aren’t exciting. Hovering, propulsion, buoyancy and trim aren’t glamorous, but they’re the skills that determine how easily you’ll progress throughout the course.

Equipment is another area where people unintentionally make life difficult for themselves.

If your equipment is working well and you’re comfortable with it, resist the temptation to make changes just before the class. A new harness, different regulators or a different drysuit can all introduce unnecessary distractions when you should be concentrating on learning.

Finally, make sure everything is properly maintained before you arrive.

Leaking drysuit seals, sticky inflator valves, free-flowing regulators or other avoidable equipment problems don’t just interrupt dives—they consume mental bandwidth that would be far better spent learning.

Remember why you’re coming

You’re not coming to Cave 1, Tech 1 or CCR Fundamentals to prove how good you already are.

You’re coming to learn.

The better your Fundamentals have become, the more time we can spend developing new skills instead of revisiting old ones.

The students who make the biggest leaps forward aren’t usually the most experienced divers in the class.

They’re the ones whose buoyancy, trim, propulsion and teamwork have become second nature.

Everything else builds from there.

“Which GUE rebreather should I buy?”

The short answer is that there isn’t a wrong answer.

GUE currently supports both the JJCCR and the Symbios CCR. Both are excellent rebreathers, capable of taking you from your first CCR class all the way to the most demanding exploration dives. More importantly, both are backed by the same training philosophy, procedures and standards that make GUE CCR so effective.

So how do you choose?

Why choose the Symbios?

The Symbios is the newer of the two systems, and it’s immediately obvious that it was designed with simplicity in mind.

It’s compact, lightweight and much easier to travel with than many traditional CCRs. If you’re someone who spends a lot of time getting on aeroplanes, that’s a significant advantage.

For divers already using a GUE single-tank or twinset setup, the Symbios also integrates naturally with much of your existing equipment. You don’t need to reinvent your entire kit configuration.

Another area where the Symbios really stands out is its breathing performance. The entire design has been optimised to minimise work of breathing, making it feel remarkably effortless underwater. While it’s hard to quantify in a short article, it’s something that many divers notice from their very first dive.

In short, the Symbios is an elegant, modern design that prioritises simplicity, travel and outstanding ergonomics.

Why choose the JJCCR?

The JJCCR has one enormous advantage: experience.

It has been used on thousands upon thousands of dives over many years, in every environment from recreational diving to some of the world’s most ambitious exploration projects.

That long history means the unit has earned a reputation for reliability. Problems have been identified, refined and solved through years of real-world use, giving many divers confidence in the platform.

It also has one of the largest communities of CCR divers anywhere. That means it’s easy to find instructors, teammates, spare parts, advice and people with extensive experience on the unit.

For many divers, that mature ecosystem is a compelling reason to choose the JJCCR.

So... which would I recommend?

I’d be happy diving either.

If you value a lightweight, streamlined system that’s easy to travel with and integrates neatly into existing GUE equipment, the Symbios is a fantastic choice.

If you like the reassurance of a platform with an exceptionally long operational track record and a huge user community, the JJCCR remains an outstanding option.

The good news is that whichever you choose, you’re learning the same GUE CCR system. The skills, procedures and mindset are identical, and you’ll be training to exactly the same standards.

In the end, the best rebreather is the one that gets you out diving.

Every GUE Fundamentals graduate reaches the same point. You’ve built a solid foundation, you’ve caught the cave diving bug, and now you have a decision to make.

Where should you take Cave 1?

Ask around and you’ll get plenty of opinions. Florida has a rich cave diving history. France offers incredible exploration opportunities. Sardinia has become an excellent destination for GUE cave training. None of them are bad choices.

But if someone asks me where I’d recommend they take their first cave course, my answer is usually Mexico.

Not because it’s the easiest.

Because I think it’s one of the best places to learn.

For me, Cave 1 isn’t about ticking a certification box. It’s about building the habits and mindset that you’ll carry into every cave dive afterwards. As GUE divers, we’re striving for precision: buoyancy, trim, propulsion, communication and awareness. The more attention you can devote to those skills, the more you’ll get out of the course.

That’s where Mexico really shines.

The cenotes offer remarkably consistent conditions. Warm water, exceptional visibility and minimal environmental distractions allow both instructor and student to focus on what really matters. Those conditions don’t lower the standard—they simply create an environment where learning can happen more effectively.

The logistics help too. Many of the best training sites are only minutes apart, so you’re spending less time driving and more time diving, debriefing and refining your skills. Over the course of a week, that extra time really adds up. It’s not unusual to dive two or three completely different cave systems during a training week, each offering its own character and learning opportunities.

I’ve spent years diving, exploring and teaching in Mexico, and I still think it’s one of the most rewarding places to introduce people to cave diving. Watching a student progress from their first tentative cavern dive to confidently planning and executing Cave 1 dives is one of the best parts of being an instructor.

One misconception I still hear is that Mexico somehow makes Cave 1 “easy.”

It doesn’t.

Anyone who’s completed GUE Fundamentals knows that standards don’t change because the visibility is better. Good buoyancy is still good buoyancy. Precise propulsion is still precise propulsion. The course is just as demanding—it simply removes unnecessary distractions so both you and your instructor can focus on developing the skills that really matter.

Could you become an excellent cave diver by training somewhere else?

Absolutely.

But if you’re looking for a destination that combines world-class caves, consistent conditions and an environment that lets you get the absolute most from your Cave 1 course, I think Mexico is hard to beat.

That’s why, when someone asks me where they should take Cave 1, my answer is usually Mexico.
