There is an old and extremely important distinction between the rule of law and rule by law.

The first protects civilisation.

The second can destroy it.

Under the rule of law, the law stands above politics. It applies equally to the fashionable and unfashionable, the powerful and powerless, the popular and unpopular.

Under rule by law, something rather different happens.

The institutions remain. There are still judges, courts, officials, hearings, warrants, agencies and statutes. Everything retains the appearance of constitutional order.

But somewhere along the way the question changes.

Instead of asking, What does justice require?, people begin asking:

What can we use against him?

That distinction is worth considering in the extraordinary case of Milo Yiannopoulos.

Milo is not an easy man to defend.

That is precisely the point.

Free societies are not tested by how they treat people everybody likes. They are tested by what happens to the awkward man, the offensive man, the dissident, the troublemaker and, above all, the man who has accumulated powerful enemies.

Milo has spent much of his adult life collecting them.

For more than a decade he has made a profession of saying things other people considered unsayable. He has offended the Left and the Right, liberals and conservatives, journalists and politicians, activists and institutions.

At various moments he has even managed to offend many of his own friends.

One need not approve of everything Milo has ever said — I certainly do not — to recognise something infinitely more important.

He has a right to be treated justly.

And justice ceases to be justice the moment it depends upon whether we approve of the defendant.

THE ADMINISTRATIVE STATE HAS TEETH

In late August Milo Yiannopoulos was detained by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The government’s stated position was straightforward: Milo had remained in the United States beyond the period authorised by his visa, had failed to appear at an immigration hearing and had consequently become subject to a final order of removal. He was subsequently detained and deported to Britain.

Those facts matter.

If somebody breaches immigration law, holding controversial political opinions does not magically exempt him from it.

But neither does that dispose of the wider question.

It raises it.

Why does the machinery of government descend upon some people with extraordinary efficiency while apparently passing others by?

That question becomes especially important whenever private political disputes and personal vendettas begin intersecting with the coercive machinery of the state.

There is an enormous difference between enforcing the law and encouraging the state to investigate one’s political or personal opponents in the hope that something can be found against them.

The first is government.

The second is potentially something much darker.

And anyone who believes in constitutional government ought to recognise the difference.

FIRST THEY CAME FOR THE SPEECH

Milo’s story did not begin with immigration.

Years before his deportation, his appearances on American university campuses had become battlegrounds over whether controversial political speech should be permitted at all.

At Berkeley in 2017, protests surrounding one of his scheduled appearances descended into violence and the event was cancelled.

Consider the extraordinary inversion.

A speaker is controversial.

Opponents threaten disorder.

The authorities fear disorder.

And therefore the speaker disappears.

It is the ancient mechanism known as the heckler’s veto.

You do not actually have to censor somebody if you can make the consequences of allowing him to speak sufficiently unpleasant.

And the modern mechanism extends far beyond universities.

Publishers, payment processors, social-media platforms, banks, employers, professional organisations and government agencies collectively possess an astonishing capacity to make somebody disappear from respectable public life.

Each institution may insist that it acted independently.

Perhaps it did.

But the cumulative result can nevertheless resemble something very different from ordinary disagreement.

It can resemble civic erasure.

THEN COME THE COURTS

There is another characteristic of modern political warfare that deserves considerably more attention.

The legal process itself can become punishment.

A person does not necessarily need to be convicted of anything to have his life profoundly damaged by law.

Lawyers must be hired.

Documents produced.

Hearings attended.

Depositions endured.

Deadlines observed.

Money spent.

Years disappear.

Reputations become permanently associated with litigation merely because litigation exists.

None of this means courts should not function. Of course they should.

Nor does it mean that every case involving a political figure constitutes persecution. Plainly it does not.

The danger arises when citizens begin to regard the legal system not principally as a means of obtaining justice, but as another battlefield upon which political enemies can be exhausted.

That is the phenomenon sometimes called lawfare.

And it is corrosive because it retains all the outward appearances of legality.

No dictator is required.

No secret police are necessary.

The paperwork is perfectly in order.

“BUT HE BROKE THE LAW”

There is a sentence increasingly heard in modern politics:

“But he broke the law.”

Sometimes that settles the matter.

But sometimes it does not.

Modern states have accumulated enormous forests of statutes, regulations, administrative requirements, tax provisions, immigration rules and reporting obligations.

Consequently, the mere existence of a technical violation cannot always answer the question of selective enforcement.

The deeper question is whether the same machinery would have moved with the same determination against somebody politically useful, fashionable or protected.

That is where equality before the law becomes meaningful.

It does not merely mean that the same statute exists on paper for everybody.

It means that the coercive attention of the state must not be allocated according to friendship, faction, influence or ideology.

If my friend commits an offence, the law should apply.

If my enemy commits precisely the same offence, the law should apply precisely the same way.

Anything else is not justice.

It is politics wearing a judge’s wig.

THE RIGHT SHOULD KNOW BETTER

There is an especially uncomfortable aspect to Milo’s case for conservatives.

Milo himself has advocated tough immigration enforcement.

His opponents can therefore laugh and say that he has merely received the policies he wanted imposed upon others.

Perhaps there is an irony there.

But schadenfreude is not a constitutional principle.

If conservatives genuinely believe in borders, courts, police and strong institutions, then they carry a greater responsibility — not a lesser one — to ensure those powers are exercised impersonally.

Otherwise the conservative argument for strong institutions quietly becomes an argument for strong institutions provided our people control them.

That is not conservatism.

It is factionalism.

And eventually the faction changes.

This is the lesson political movements repeatedly refuse to learn.

Every weapon constructed for your enemy will eventually be inherited by somebody who considers you the enemy.

THE PERFECT TEST

Milo is therefore almost the perfect test of whether we actually believe the principles we claim to believe.

Not because he is always right.

Not because he is always wise.

Certainly not because he is always polite.

He matters precisely because he is difficult.

It requires virtually no courage to defend the liberties of somebody whose opinions are approved by every respectable newspaper.

The real test comes when the individual is outrageous, embarrassing, unpredictable and capable of saying things one desperately wishes he had not said.

Civilisation means that even that man receives justice.

Especially that man.

The political weaponisation of institutions rarely announces itself with trumpets.

Nobody hangs a brass plaque outside a government department reading:

OFFICE OF POLITICAL PERSECUTION.

It arrives bureaucratically.

A complaint.

A referral.

A subpoena.

An investigation.

A hearing.

A regulation.

A missed deadline.

A removal order.

Every individual step may be lawful.

Every official involved may believe he is simply doing his job.

And yet citizens must retain the courage to ask whether the immense coercive power of government is being applied consistently — or whether political and personal warfare has somehow found its way inside the machinery.

That question is not an attack upon the rule of law.

It is essential to preserving it.

Because the law must punish conduct, not opinions.

Government must administer justice, not revenge.

Courts must resolve disputes, not become weapons through which the wealthy, powerful or politically connected can exhaust their enemies.

And political factions must resist the intoxicating temptation to summon the power of the state against people they dislike.

The moment we abandon those principles because the person concerned is Milo Yiannopoulos, we have established something considerably more important than what happens to Milo.

We have established that the principle itself is negotiable.

And once equality before the law becomes negotiable, the only remaining question is who controls the machinery.

Today it may be Milo.

Tomorrow it may be someone you despise.

And the day after that—

it may be you.

No. 4 — When Europe’s Political Thinkers Meet

One of the great advantages of travelling is that you never quite know whom you are going to meet.

And St Tropez, for all its yachts, restaurants and occasional absurdities, remains one of those places where interesting people have a habit of appearing.

A few days ago, I had the great pleasure of meeting Leo Lugner, one of the emerging figures in Austrian politics.

and I has just been discussing Europe.

Not the Europe of directives, committees and carefully prepared statements.

The real Europe.

The Europe of nations, history, families, businesses, borders, traditions and people trying to work out what sort of continent they wish to leave their children.

Something is changing.

You can feel it.

Across Europe, assumptions which appeared immovable twenty years ago are being questioned.

People are asking whether decisions should be made closer to home.

They are asking what sovereignty means in the modern world.

They are asking whether prosperity can continue to be taken for granted.

They are asking how nations preserve their identities while cooperating with their neighbours.

And increasingly, they are asking whether the political language of the last generation is capable of answering the problems of the next one.

These are legitimate questions.

They are also interesting ones.

Leo belongs to a younger generation entering European politics as many of the old certainties are being reconsidered.

What interested me about meeting him was therefore not simply electoral politics.

It was the conversation beneath the politics.

This is something I think we have lost.

Politics has become a spectator sport in which two sides are encouraged to shout at one another while everybody else chooses a team.

I find this terribly dull.

The most interesting political conversations I have had rarely begin with:

“Here is why I am right.”

They begin with:

“What do you think?”

That small distinction matters.

Civilisations advance through the exchange of ideas.

Some ideas survive examination.

Others collapse almost immediately.

Occasionally two people approach the same problem from entirely different directions and discover that they have arrived at much the same conclusion.

This is why conversation matters.

And Austria is a particularly interesting place from which to consider Europe’s future.

For centuries it has stood near the geographical and cultural crossroads of the continent.

East meets West there.

Germanic Europe encounters Central Europe.

Empires have risen and disappeared around it.

Borders have moved.

Political systems have come and gone.

Vienna has witnessed enough history to make anyone suspicious of the suggestion that today’s arrangements are necessarily permanent.

Perhaps that is why I enjoyed our conversation.

There was also something wonderfully European about discussing the future of the continent in St Tropez.

No conference room.

No lectern.

No television studio.

No row of little national flags.

Just conversation.

There is a lesson in this.

We have become so accustomed to politics being conducted through institutions that we sometimes forget where political ideas actually begin.

They begin between people.

Over dinner.

Walking through a town.

Beside a river.

In a drawing room.

Occasionally, even in St Tropez.

Someone asks a question.

Someone else challenges the premise.

An assumption which appeared obvious suddenly doesn’t.

A different possibility emerges.

And an idea begins to travel.

That is how many of the ideas which eventually changed Europe started—not as government programmes, but as conversations.

It is one of the reasons I intend The Mappin Letter to introduce its readers to interesting people encountered along the way.

Some will be politicians.

Others will be fishermen, entrepreneurs, artists, writers, hoteliers, adventurers or people who fit no convenient category whatsoever.

They need not agree with me.

That would rather defeat the purpose.

What matters is that they have something interesting to say.

Because when thoughtful people meet and are prepared to speak freely, something becomes possible that no algorithm can manufacture.

A genuine exchange of ideas.

And every so often, one of those ideas changes the world.

The conversation is only beginning.

No. 3 — The Great Hotel Is One of Civilisation’s Finest Inventions

There are few inventions more civilised than a great hotel.

I don’t mean merely an expensive hotel.

Expensive hotels are quite common.

Great hotels are extraordinarily rare.

A great hotel is not really a building at all. It is a stage upon which thousands of lives briefly intersect.

People arrive.

People leave.

Some fall in love. Some make fortunes. Some lose them. Deals are conceived over breakfast. Friendships begin at the bar. Marriages are proposed. Arguments erupt. Families return year after year until eventually their children arrive with children of their own.

And all the while the hotel remains.

I have spent a considerable part of my life thinking about hotels, not least because I have had the privilege—and occasionally the ordeal—of owning one.

Hotel ownership teaches you something very quickly.

The public has absolutely no interest in your problems.

Nor should it.

The boiler may have exploded.

A chef may have disappeared.

The roof may be engaged in an argument with the Atlantic.

Three members of staff may have telephoned simultaneously to announce mysterious illnesses.

None of this matters to the gentleman arriving at four o’clock.

He would like his room.

And he would like it to be warm.

This is an excellent lesson in reality.

Hospitality is the art of making enormous effort appear effortless.

The guest should never see the machinery.

He should simply feel that everything is somehow as it ought to be.

The fire is burning.

The room is ready.

Someone remembers his name.

The drink appears.

For a few hours the world becomes slightly more agreeable.

That sounds simple.

It isn’t.

Perhaps this is why the truly great hotels develop personalities.

You can feel them.

Walk into Claridge’s, the Ritz in Paris, the Gritti Palace in Venice or one of the great old Swiss hotels and you immediately understand that you have entered somewhere rather than merely checked into something.

There is memory in the walls.

Modern hotel designers occasionally forget this.

They spend extraordinary sums creating buildings of impeccable taste in which absolutely nothing has ever happened.

Everything is beige.

The chairs are beige.

The carpets are beige.

The walls are beige.

After twenty-four hours the guest begins to suspect that he too may have become beige.

Give me eccentricity.

Give me the slightly ridiculous staircase.

Give me the enormous fireplace.

Give me the portrait whose subject nobody can quite identify.

Give me the barman who has been there for thirty years and knows considerably more about international affairs than most ambassadors.

Perfection is overrated.

Character is priceless.

This is true of people too.

The individuals we remember most fondly are rarely the most perfectly polished.

They are the ones with stories.

Hotels collect such people.

That is what makes them fascinating.

At Camelot Castle, overlooking the Atlantic at Tintagel, I have watched this process for years.

People arrive from every corner of the world.

Some know precisely why they have come.

Others have simply followed the road until they reach the sea.

They walk through the door carrying their histories with them.

For a short time, all these separate stories occupy the same building.

This is one of the things I love about hospitality.

A hotel is one of the few remaining places where strangers are still permitted to speak to one another.

The modern world has become strangely suspicious of spontaneous human contact.

We travel with headphones.

We eat while looking at telephones.

We conduct business through screens.

Algorithms increasingly decide whom we encounter and what opinions we hear.

But sit beside somebody at a hotel bar and none of that applies.

You don’t know his algorithm.

He doesn’t know yours.

So you talk.

And every so often the person on the next stool turns out to be extraordinary.

This has happened to me often enough that I no longer regard it as accidental.

Put interesting people in an interesting building and interesting things happen.

It is practically a law of nature.

The great hotels understood this instinctively.

They weren’t simply selling bedrooms.

They were providing meeting places.

London clubs understood it.

The old European cafés understood it.

Country houses understood it.

Civilisation requires places in which human beings can encounter one another without knowing precisely what the outcome is supposed to be.

This is increasingly important because efficiency, for all its virtues, is slowly removing chance from our lives.

We book the car through an app.

We order the food through an app.

We meet people through an app.

We are entertained by an algorithm which has calculated what we enjoyed yesterday.

Everything becomes frictionless.

But some of the greatest events in life begin with friction.

A missed train.

The wrong table.

An unexpected invitation.

A stranger saying hello.

A hotel is a machine for manufacturing these accidents.

That is why I think they matter.

And there is another reason.

Hospitality is an ancient human virtue.

Before there were hotel corporations and loyalty programmes there was the simple idea that the traveller arriving at your door should be welcomed, fed, warmed and protected.

Civilisation begins with such gestures.

Here is a bed.

Here is some food.

Sit beside the fire.

Tell us where you have come from.

These words are thousands of years old in spirit.

Perhaps that is why the best hotels produce such powerful loyalty.

We don’t merely remember the mattress.

We remember how the place made us feel.

We remember the Christmas there.

The summer there.

The person we met there.

The dinner which went on far too late.

The morning we opened the curtains and saw the mountains, or Paris, or Venice, or the Atlantic.

Eventually a building becomes a container for memory.

And that is when a hotel becomes something greater than a business.

It becomes an institution.

The accountants may find this difficult to place on a balance sheet.

But it is probably the most valuable asset the hotel possesses.

Of course, one must still fix the boiler.

Civilisation has its limits.

No. 2 — How to Catch a Salmon — and Why It Has Almost Nothing to Do With the Fish

There are easier ways to obtain a salmon.

One can go to a fishmonger.

This is considerably cheaper, requires no waders and has the enormous advantage that the salmon is already there.

Yet for centuries otherwise rational men and women have travelled hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles to stand in cold water waving a line at a creature which may have absolutely no intention of cooperating.

Why?

Because salmon fishing has almost nothing to do with the salmon.

I have been fortunate enough to fish some wonderful rivers, and the longer I do it, the more convinced I become that catching the fish is merely the excuse.

The real attraction is everything surrounding it.

The journey north.

The lodge.

The ghillie who has known the river for forty years and can detect a change in the water which is entirely invisible to you.

The ridiculous optimism at breakfast.

The equally ridiculous explanations at dinner.

The dram afterwards.

And above all, the river itself.

A salmon river has an extraordinary ability to put human affairs back into proportion.

The telephone stops mattering.

The news stops mattering.

The petty crisis which appeared absolutely essential at nine o’clock in the morning becomes rather less important when you are standing waist-deep in a river beneath a Scottish mountain.

You begin to watch the water.

Not glance at it.

Watch it.

And this is where salmon fishing becomes interesting.

Modern life teaches us to demand immediate results.

Press the button and the machine responds.

Order something and it arrives tomorrow.

Send a message and become mildly irritated if the answer has not appeared within three minutes.

A salmon river offers no such arrangement.

You may possess the finest rod ever made.

You may have the correct fly.

You may have paid handsomely for the privilege of standing on precisely the right piece of Scotland.

And the salmon may simply say:

No.

This is extremely good for the human character.

The fish is unimpressed by your bank balance, your title, your follower count, your political opinions or the size of your motor car.

Indeed, the salmon is probably the last genuinely incorruptible creature in Britain.

You cannot bribe him.

You cannot negotiate with him.

You cannot sue him.

You cannot even persuade him to follow you on X.

All you can do is present your fly as well as you know how and hope.

And then occasionally something extraordinary happens.

The line tightens.

For a fraction of a second the brain refuses to understand what has occurred.

Then the reel begins to turn.

Suddenly the river that appeared peaceful a moment earlier becomes electrically alive.

There is a salmon at the other end.

At that moment, nothing else exists.

Not London.

Not politics.

Not business.

Not tomorrow.

There is simply you, the river and a wild Atlantic fish which has travelled thousands of miles through the ocean and has somehow encountered the tiny object you have just swung across the current.

This is why fishermen remember salmon.

Ask a man about a business meeting twenty years ago and he may struggle.

Ask him about the salmon he caught in 2006 and he will tell you the river, the pool, the fly, the weather, the height of the water and probably what he ate for lunch.

But there is another part of fishing which matters even more.

The people.

Fishing creates friendships in a peculiar way because it allows long periods of silence.

This is an underrated quality.

You can walk beside somebody for several hours without feeling obliged to entertain them.

Then, sitting on the riverbank with a sandwich and perhaps something medicinal from a hip flask, a conversation begins.

Those conversations can travel anywhere.

Families.

Business.

History.

Love.

War.

Money.

God.

Death.

The absurdity of politicians.

And occasionally fishing.

Some of the most interesting conversations of my life have taken place in places where there was no mobile signal.

Perhaps that is not a coincidence.

We have built a civilisation in which almost everybody can contact everybody else at any moment, yet genuine conversation sometimes seems harder to find.

A fishing lodge reverses the arrangement.

The world outside becomes distant.

The people immediately around you become important.

Breakfast matters.

Dinner matters.

Who caught what matters enormously for approximately twenty minutes and then becomes the excuse for another bottle to be opened.

Stories are told.

Some of them are even true.

And tomorrow morning everybody begins again.

This is the great secret of the sporting life.

The sport is only the framework.

The real subject is friendship.

It is the accumulation of mornings and rivers and journeys and characters and stories which eventually become a life.

Of course I still want to catch the salmon.

Very much indeed.

Anyone who tells you otherwise has probably just had a blank day.

But as the years pass, one begins to understand that the fish was never really the prize.

The prize was being there.

Standing in a beautiful river.

Among interesting people.

Doing something mankind has done for centuries.

Waiting for a creature that owes you absolutely nothing.

And perhaps that is why, when somebody asks whether the fishing was good, I increasingly think there are two possible answers.

There is the number of salmon caught.

And there is whether you would give anything to be back there tomorrow morning.

The second is the one that matters.

No. 1 —

There is another Britain.

It does not spend its life arguing on television. It does not particularly care what is trending on social media. And it has somehow survived the determined efforts of modernity to make everything faster, uglier and more ordinary.

You find it at six o’clock in the morning on a Scottish salmon river.

You find it in a country-house kitchen after everybody else has gone to bed.

You find it in old hotels, fishing huts, gun rooms, stables, village pubs and around enormous fireplaces where conversations take place which could never possibly occur on Zoom.

It is a Britain of friendship, adventure, eccentricity and tradition.

And, contrary to popular belief, it isn’t dead.

I have been fortunate enough to spend a considerable part of my life wandering through this world.

I have met politicians and fishermen, billionaires and ghillies, actors and entrepreneurs, princes, rogues, philosophers and the occasional person who appeared to be all of these things at once.

One discovers something rather important along the way.

The most interesting people are seldom the people one is told are interesting.

The best places are seldom the places everybody is visiting.

And the most valuable conversations are almost never the ones conducted in public.

That is the purpose of The Mappin Letter.

I intend to take you with me.

One week we may be standing waist-deep in a Scottish river attempting to persuade an Atlantic salmon to take a fly.

The next we may be at Camelot Castle discussing the future of civilisation with somebody who has spent his life thinking about it.

There will be journeys, houses, hotels, rivers, dogs, horses, sporting adventures, history, extraordinary characters and occasionally politics—although preferably the sort discussed over dinner rather than shouted about on television.

There will also be ideas.

I remain convinced that civilisation advances because individuals are prepared to think independently.

Great things rarely begin with a committee.

They begin with somebody saying:

Why not?

Why not build the hotel?

Why not buy the castle?

Why not fish the river?

Why not invite the extraordinary person to dinner?

Why not attempt the apparently impossible?

The world has become terribly good at explaining why things cannot be done.

I am much more interested in the people who do them anyway.

This letter will therefore be about more than Britain.

It will be about living adventurously.

Not recklessly.

Adventurously.

There is a considerable difference.

Money can buy comfort. It cannot buy adventure.

Status can obtain invitations. It cannot produce friendship.

And technology can connect almost everybody on Earth while somehow leaving millions of people feeling that they are spectators at somebody else’s party.

I would like this to be the opposite.

A letter from inside the party.

There will be places I think you should visit, books worth reading, people worth meeting and traditions worth preserving.

Sometimes I shall be completely wrong.

That is part of the fun.

But I promise you one thing.

It will never be boring.

So welcome to The Mappin Letter.

There is still another Britain.

And there is an enormous world beyond it.

We had better get going.

It is great news that Harry and Meghan Windsor are coming home.

And perhaps, after everything that has been said, written, shouted and televised over the past few years, Britain might surprise everyone by doing something rather unfashionable.

We might simply welcome them.

Warmly.

There has been quite enough warfare.

The Sussex saga has become one of those modern disputes in which everybody is expected to choose a side, construct a trench and remain there indefinitely.

Harry versus William. Meghan versus the Palace. California versus Windsor. Netflix versus the newspapers.

Enough.

Families fall out. They say things they regret. They misunderstand one another. Pride enters the room. Friends take sides. And before anybody quite knows how it happened, people who once loved one another find themselves communicating through newspapers.

This is not particularly royal.

It is particularly human.

And that is precisely why Harry and Meghan’s return should be viewed as an opportunity rather than another instalment in a national soap opera.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

Harry is, after all, the King’s son.

He is William’s brother.

He is Diana’s boy.

Whatever mistakes have been made—and undoubtedly mistakes have been made on all sides—those facts are rather more important than the latest grievance.

And Meghan should be welcomed too.

She married into perhaps the most complicated family institution on Earth, while becoming one of the most scrutinised women on the planet. Whatever one’s view of her decisions, it requires little imagination to understand that the experience cannot always have been easy.

Britain is at its best when it is generous.

We have a wonderful national habit of grumbling about people and then, when the moment matters, opening the door and putting the kettle on.

That instinct would serve us well now.

There is something rather attractive about coming home.

America can offer sunshine, swimming pools and enormous refrigerators, but it cannot provide Windsor Great Park on an autumn morning. It cannot manufacture the smell of England after rain. It cannot reproduce an English pub fire, a Gloucestershire hedgerow or the extraordinary continuity of a family that has inhabited the centre of British life for generations.

Harry belongs to that story.

And his children belong to it too.

Perhaps the greatest beneficiaries of reconciliation would be Archie and Lilibet. Children should know their family. They should know their cousins, their grandfather and the country from which half their inheritance comes.

One hopes the adults can make that possible.

Reconciliation does not require anyone to pretend that nothing happened. Nor does forgiveness require rewriting history.

It simply requires the wisdom to decide that the future matters more than the argument.

There is an old-fashioned nobility in allowing somebody to come home without demanding that they crawl through the door.

The Royal Family has survived abdications, divorces, wars, scandals and revolutions. It can certainly survive a family reconciliation.

Indeed, it might be strengthened by one.

Harry has lived a little. Meghan has lived a little. Britain has lived through the drama with them.

Perhaps everybody knows rather more now than when this extraordinary adventure began.

So when Harry and Meghan return, let us resist the temptation to restart the trial.

No rotten tomatoes.

No scorecards.

No demands for ritual humiliation.

Open the gates.

Put the kettle on.

Welcome Meghan.

Welcome the children.

And welcome home, Harry.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

Especially family.

As the months have passed, we have found ourselves reflecting on something rather curious about the official narrative surrounding Charlie Kirk.

Not simply whether one agrees with it or disagrees with it.

Something more fundamental.

Its extraordinary fragility.

When a public explanation appears, to many observers, unable to answer obvious questions or withstand obvious scrutiny, an intriguing possibility presents itself.

Perhaps the objective was never to persuade everyone in the first place.

Perhaps belief was never the primary goal.

What if, after the public execution of its founder, the real objective became the public humiliation of what he created?

Not merely the removal of one man, but the transformation of his life’s work into a cautionary tale.

A permanent lesson to those who dare to exercise genuine freedom of thought and speech.

If that proposition sounds unsettling, consider the observable consequences.

If Charlie’s removal from the geopolitical chessboard was only the first move, perhaps the second was something far more calculated: placing those entrusted with preserving his legacy in the impossible position of publicly defending propositions that large sections of the public simply do not accept—and then requiring them to continue doing so.

Day after day.

Month after month.

Whether one agrees with those public criticisms or not is almost beside the point. Reputations are rarely destroyed by a single event. They are eroded when legitimate questions appear to be met not with openness, but with insistence.

That is how trust evaporates.

An organisation’s greatest asset is never its buildings, its donor lists or even its leadership.

It is credibility.

Once credibility begins to fracture, everything else becomes immeasurably harder to preserve.

There is another development that deserves careful consideration.

Turning Point increasingly presents itself not merely as a conservative organisation but as an explicitly Christian one. Faith has become a more central part of its public identity.

There is, of course, nothing inherently wrong with that.

Indeed, Christianity has shaped Western civilisation more profoundly than perhaps any other force.

But that also places a greater responsibility upon those who invoke it.

Christianity does not ask believers to suspend their moral judgement.

It asks them to sharpen it.

The Christian tradition is built upon truth, repentance, justice and the courage to stand against falsehood, even when doing so is personally costly.

The prophets challenged kings.

The apostles challenged empires.

Christ Himself challenged religious authorities whenever institutional preservation took precedence over truth.

If Christians come to be perceived—fairly or unfairly—as defending what many ordinary people regard as implausible simply because loyalty demands it, they risk damaging not only an organisation but also the public reputation of Christianity itself.

That would be a profound tragedy.

For Christianity is not a religion of blind acceptance.

It is a religion of conscience.

The willingness to ask difficult questions is not the enemy of faith.

It is often the beginning of it.

Whether history ultimately vindicates today’s official account is a matter for evidence, not emotion.

History, however, has one enduring habit.

It is remarkably unforgiving of institutions that mistake loyalty for truth.

For truth possesses one inconvenient quality.

It has an extraordinary habit of surviving.

Provision, Stewardship, Freedom and the Forgotten Foundations of Civilisation

A Note to the Reader

Every family possesses its own history.

Some of it survives in deeds, parish registers, business ledgers and official records.

Some of it survives because generation after generation considered it too important to forget.

The House of Mappin is no different.

What follows is drawn from documented family history, traditions faithfully preserved within our family by my late father and my late aunt, together with my own reflections on their wider significance.

History is not preserved only in archives.

It is also preserved in families.

There comes a point when a tradition has been carried faithfully across enough generations that it deserves to be recorded—not as idle folklore, but as part of a family’s inheritance.

This essay is an attempt to do exactly that.

The House of Mappin

There are families remembered for conquest.

Others for titles.

Others for great military victories or political influence.

The House of Mappin remembers something rather different.

Bread.

That may sound almost disappointingly ordinary.

It is anything but.

For bread was civilisation long before civilisation acquired its cathedrals, its universities or its parliaments.

Before there could be philosophy, there first had to be harvests.

Before there could be liberty, there first had to be life.

Before men could concern themselves with rights, constitutions and governments, someone had to ensure there was still bread upon the table when winter arrived.

That simple truth lies at the heart of one of the oldest traditions preserved within my family.

For generations, the House of Mappin has understood its origins not principally through wealth or status, but through stewardship.

The story handed down to me as a child was remarkably consistent.

Our ancestors first established themselves in France.

They became associated with farming, wheat production, baking, brewing and notably with the provision of bread during the harsh winters that periodically descended upon medieval Europe.

When harvests failed and hardship spread across the countryside, they ensured that those who depended upon them continued to eat.

Whether tenant, labourer or neighbour, no distinction was made where genuine need existed.

Bread came first.

Life came first.

Everything else followed.

As a boy, I accepted this story simply because it was the history of my family.

As I grew older, I came to realise that, whether one viewed it as history, inheritance or philosophy, it contained something profoundly important.

It described a civilisation built not upon entitlement, but upon obligation.

Not upon extracting from society.

But sustaining it.

There is a tendency today to assume that wealth has always existed principally for private enjoyment.

Our ancestors would have found that idea rather strange.

Across much of medieval Europe, property carried responsibilities as naturally as it carried privileges.

Those entrusted with abundance were expected to preserve the communities around them.

The successful harvest was never entirely their own.

Neither was the full granary.

Civilisation depended upon stewardship.

The House of Mappin understood this instinctively.

Indeed, I have often thought there is a quiet symbolism in one of the earliest documented occupations of the family after its arrival in Britain.

Brewing.

Once again, grain.

Once again, cultivation.

Once again, transforming the ordinary into something capable of sustaining human life.

There is poetry in that continuity.

Bread and beer have accompanied European civilisation for thousands of years.

They nourished not merely the body, but the village itself.

Around them, communities formed.

Commerce flourished.

Friendships developed.

Peace was negotiated.

Families endured.

The more I have reflected upon our family history, the more I have come to believe that bread represented something far greater than food.

It represented trust.

A village whose ovens remained lit through winter possessed more than nourishment.

It possessed hope.

And hope, perhaps more than anything else, is the first duty of civilisation.

The principles endured.

Families change their trades.

Few change their character.

As the centuries unfolded and branches of the family established themselves in Britain, the outward expression of that stewardship evolved.

The ovens gave way to workshops.

Grain gave way to silver.

Bread gave way to craftsmanship.

Yet the underlying purpose remained recognisable.

To serve.

To create.

To be relied upon.

One of the remarkable lessons of history is that civilisation advances not merely through ideas, but through trust.

Trust is accumulated slowly, over generations, through keeping one’s word, producing work of enduring quality and understanding that reputation is a form of inherited capital.

The House of Mappin came to understand that lesson well.

In time, the family became associated with one of Britain’s great commercial names: Mappin & Webb.

To the casual observer, the journey from bread to jewellery appears extraordinary.

I have never thought so.

Both occupations required precisely the same virtues.

Patience.

Precision.

Integrity.

The baker understands that a poor loaf is immediately apparent.

The jeweller understands that poor workmanship is eventually discovered.

Both trades depend upon trust.

Neither survives for long without it.

The material changed.

The philosophy did not.

The family found itself entrusted not simply with precious metals and gemstones, but with objects that marked the most important moments in the lives of nations and families alike.

Royal households.

Statesmen.

Military leaders.

Diplomats.

Great families of Britain and, increasingly, of Europe.

To serve such people was not merely to conduct commerce.

It was to become part of a network built upon confidence and discretion.

The finest craftsmen have always occupied a curious place in civilisation.

They stand close enough to power to observe it, yet their true loyalty is not to transient governments, but to excellence itself.

Kings come and go.

Ministers rise and fall.

Dynasties flourish and decline.

But craftsmanship, honour and reputation outlive them all.

It is perhaps no surprise that families devoted to enduring standards often found themselves welcomed across Europe.

Commerce has always carried more than goods.

It carries conversation.

It carries manners.

It carries ideas.

Long before newspapers reached every household, and long before electronic communication collapsed distance, merchants, craftsmen and travellers quietly transported philosophies from one capital to another.

Ideas crossed borders disguised as ordinary commerce.

Within our family another tradition has been preserved with equal consistency.

It was always said that later generations of the House of Mappin quietly supported circles of thinkers, printers and patrons associated with the great intellectual awakening that became known as the Age of Enlightenment.

Whether through commerce, patronage or personal friendship, the family believed that the defence of reason, liberty of conscience and the free exchange of ideas was every bit as important as the provision of bread itself.

Those same ideas would, in time, find powerful expression across the Atlantic in the founding principles of the United States.

That is one of the least appreciated truths of European and Modern American history.

The civilisation we inherited was not created solely by monarchs or parliaments.

It was woven together by thousands of relationships built upon mutual respect, professional excellence and personal confidence.

In that sense, the workshops of Europe became every bit as important as its palaces.

The House of Mappin understood that influence is most durable when it is exercised quietly.

The family tradition has always been that relationships were valued not for advantage alone, but because enduring friendships between responsible men and women strengthened the civilisation they served.

Power seeks attention.

Influence rarely does.

That distinction has become increasingly important to me.

As I have reflected upon the traditions of my own family, I have come to believe that the greatest contribution any family can make is not merely commercial success, but the patient transmission of principles from one generation to the next.

Stewardship.

Responsibility.

Religious freedom.

Respect for conscience.

The dignity of honest work.

The understanding that prosperity carries obligations as well as privileges.

These are not fashionable ideas.

They are, however, remarkably durable.

Perhaps that is why they have survived.

History moves in long cycles.

The institutions change.

The names upon the doors change.

The technologies change.

Human nature changes very little.

Every civilisation must eventually answer the same questions.

What is wealth for?

What is power for?

What is freedom for?

What do we owe one another?

Those questions are no less urgent today than they were in medieval France or Enlightenment Britain.

In many respects, they are more urgent.

It is here that my own story intersects with the older story of my family.

Camelot Castle was never intended to become merely a successful hotel.

Nor was it acquired simply because of its extraordinary position overlooking the Atlantic.

Camelot is an idea before it is a building.

For centuries, the legend of Camelot has represented something greater than Arthur himself.

It represents the aspiration that civilisation can be ordered around honour rather than fear, service rather than selfishness, courage rather than convenience, and truth rather than fashion.

Whether King Arthur was history, legend or a fusion of both is, in one sense, beside the point.

The ideals have outlived the debate.

That, surely, is the true measure of civilisation.

When I look back across the traditions of the House of Mappin—from bread to brewing, from craftsmanship to commerce, from service to sovereigns to the enduring relationships that connected families across Europe—I do not see a sequence of unrelated occupations.

I see a single thread.

The thread is stewardship.

The form changes.

The principle endures.

If Camelot has any purpose in our own age, it is to continue that thread.

Not by attempting to recreate the past, but by recovering those principles that enabled free societies to flourish in the first place.

To encourage reason over hysteria.

Dialogue over division.

Responsibility over entitlement.

Liberty anchored by conscience.

Prosperity guided by service.

These are not merely political ideas.

They are civilisational ones.

And civilisation, in the end, is sustained in exactly the same way it has always been sustained.

One family.

One friendship.

One act of trust.

One generation at a time.

That, at least, is the inheritance we received.

It is also the inheritance we hope to leave behind.

One of the more persistent misconceptions about our family is that we are somehow “political.”

We are not.

Not a little political. Not privately political. Not secretly political. We simply are not.

Those who know us personally know that our interests have always centred on something very different: rationality, religious freedom, humanitarian causes, conservation, education, mental health reform, the environment, and the restoration of sanity and civility.

Politics, for us, has never been an end. Humanity has.

This distinction matters because, from time to time, our actions have been interpreted through a political lens when our motivations were entirely different.

Whenever we have publicly supported, defended or encouraged an individual, it has never been because of party allegiance. It has been because we believed that person was acting, in that particular circumstance, with reason, compassion, integrity or humanitarian purpose.

That has often confused observers who see the world exclusively through tribal political categories.

We do not.

Our family has consistently applied the same standard regardless of where a person sits on the political spectrum.

If someone seeks reason over ideology, we are inclined to support that effort.

If someone defends freedom of conscience or religious liberty, we are likely to applaud it.

If someone attempts to reduce suffering, encourage honest dialogue or replace hysteria with thoughtful discussion, we naturally wish them well.

If, however, those same individuals later abandon those principles, our support does not automatically continue. Our loyalty has never been to politicians. It has always been to principles.

There are numerous examples.

When we supported Charlie Kirk, it was not because he was a conservative activist. It was because we believed he was increasingly seeking dialogue, encouraging thoughtful discussion and exploring ways to reduce conflict rather than inflame it. That aspiration—not partisan politics—was what mattered to us.

Similarly, our friendship with Candace Owens has never been about endorsing every opinion she has ever expressed. It has been rooted in her willingness to ask difficult questions, defend freedom of speech and challenge prevailing narratives.

When we publicly thanked Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for resisting pressure to involve Britain more deeply in military action against Iran, some assumed we had suddenly become supporters of the Labour Party.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Our appreciation had nothing whatsoever to do with Labour. It had everything to do with what we believed was a rational decision that reduced the likelihood of further bloodshed. Had the identical decision been made by a Conservative Prime Minister, a Liberal Democrat Prime Minister or someone with no party affiliation at all, we would have expressed exactly the same gratitude.

The principle was rationality.

The individual was incidental.

Likewise, our respect for President Donald Trump has never been about Republican politics. It has rested largely on occasions where he has sought negotiation rather than escalation and argued that ending wars should take precedence over starting them. We have welcomed those moments because they reflected what we considered rational statesmanship—not because they advanced a political party.

The same principle explains why we have spoken positively about figures from entirely different political traditions whenever they have acted with courage, independence of thought and a commitment to reason over tribalism.

To some commentators this appears inconsistent.

To us, it is perfectly consistent.

Our compass has never been Left versus Right.

It has always been rationality versus irrationality.

The same approach has guided Camelot Castle throughout its history.

The hotel has welcomed guests from every conceivable political, religious and philosophical background.

That has never troubled us.

Indeed, it delights us.

Civilisation advances when people who disagree can still think together, dine together and remain friends.

It declines when they cannot.

Perhaps this outlook comes from our own family history.

Our family has long believed that freedom of belief and freedom of conscience are among civilisation’s greatest achievements. History repeatedly demonstrates the terrible consequences when societies abandon reason and divide humanity into hostile political tribes.

That lesson has stayed with us.

It explains why our instinct is almost always to look first for truth, common ground and rational solutions rather than ideological victory.

Some readers will still insist on placing labels upon us.

That is their prerogative.

But labels rarely survive contact with reality.

If we praise one public figure for acting rationally while criticising another for acting irrationally, it is not because of party politics.

If tomorrow those positions were reversed, our conclusions would also reverse.

Principles remain.

Parties change.

Personalities change.

Governments change.

Our position does not.

We support rationality over hysteria.

Dialogue over hatred.

Evidence over ideology.

Freedom over coercion.

Human dignity over political tribalism.

Everything else is secondary.

If those principles occasionally lead us to stand beside people from different political traditions, so be it.

We are not joining their politics.

We are supporting rationality.

That is the distinction.

It always has been.

Every generation produces one.

Not a great statesman.

Not a gifted organiser.

Not even a competent public relations man.

Something far more remarkable.

A man who could set fire to a swimming pool.

He arrives with extraordinary confidence and absolutely no self-awareness. His curriculum vitae consists largely of having been catastrophically wrong in several previous organisations, though somehow each disaster is presented as evidence of visionary leadership.

He speaks endlessly of strategy, messaging, narrative and stakeholder management—those marvellous modern phrases which almost always precede catastrophe.

He insists he is there to protect the organisation’s reputation.

Within six months, the reputation requires life support.

The remarkable thing about these people is that they possess an almost supernatural ability to identify every possible wrong decision and then march towards it with absolute conviction.

If there are two doors...

...they choose the one marked “Do Not Enter.”

If there are ten journalists...

...they pick a fight with all eleven.

If there are loyal supporters who have devoted years to building the organisation...

...they conclude those are precisely the people who should be alienated first.

There is, after all, no point making enemies of strangers while friends remain available.

Their understanding of public relations resembles a man attempting delicate brain surgery with a garden spade.

Nuance is weakness.

Courtesy is surrender.

Humility is for lesser mortals.

Everything must become a battle.

Every disagreement becomes a declaration of war.

Every criticism demands a thermonuclear response.

Every tiny molehill is painstakingly converted into a Himalayan mountain range before breakfast.

One begins to notice a curious pattern.

The founder leaves.

The donors disappear.

The volunteers quietly drift away.

The journalists become hostile.

The membership declines.

The board resigns.

The public lose confidence.

The bank manager develops chest pains.

Yet somehow our hero concludes that all these events prove he is doing an outstanding job.

It never occurs to him that when every room he enters eventually empties, the problem may not be the furniture.

These people possess another extraordinary gift.

They mistake attention for admiration.

A newspaper article—even a disastrous one—is interpreted as success because “people are talking about us.”

Quite.

People also talk about train crashes.

That does not make them an effective transport policy.

The old masters of public relations understood something modern practitioners often forget.

Reputation is accumulated in teaspoons and lost in buckets.

Trust is slow.

Destruction is instantaneous.

One foolish email can undo ten years of careful work.

One unnecessary feud can erase a decade of goodwill.

One arrogant interview can destroy relationships that took generations to build.

Yet our modern communications genius remains blissfully convinced that another press release, another social media outburst or another legal threat will surely reverse the damage.

It never does.

There is an old military maxim that an incompetent enemy should never be interrupted whilst making a mistake.

The same rule applies to dreadful public relations officers.

Stand well back.

Resist the temptation to interfere.

Given sufficient time, they will accomplish what no rival, hostile newspaper or determined political opponent could ever achieve.

They will demolish the organisation entirely by themselves and then issue a triumphant press release announcing that everything has gone exactly according to plan.

There is a special place in history reserved for such people.

Not amongst the builders.

Nor amongst the reformers.

Nor even amongst the villains.

They occupy a category all of their own.

The demolition experts who genuinely believed they were architects.

And the truly exceptional ones?

They don’t merely lose arguments.

They don’t merely lose elections.

They don’t merely lose public confidence.

They somehow manage to lose the people who were already on their side.

That is not merely incompetence.

That is performance art.

One almost has to admire it.

There is a moment on the time line of great significance.

It lasted little more than a week.

Yet, viewed from the perspective of history rather than headlines, those few days deserve careful examination.

Some events seem insignificant when they happen. They are noticed only by those paying close attention. Later, however, they reveal themselves to have been inflection points.

This, we believe, was one of them.

21 April 2018 – The Tweet

The spark was astonishingly simple.

Ye (then Kanye West) wrote just seven words:

“I love the way Candace Owens thinks.”

For many, it looked like nothing more than another celebrity tweet.

It was anything but.

The statement instantly signalled that perhaps the world’s most influential musician intended to step outside the accepted cultural script.

That was enough.

Within hours Candace Owens replied publicly.

“I’m freaking out... please take a meeting with me...”

The conversation had begun.

29 April – The Meeting

Only eight days later, Ye met Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk in Los Angeles.

The discussion reportedly centred on politics, education, culture, media and what became known as the “free thinking” movement.

Photographs from the meeting spread rapidly.

The following day Ye published the now-famous whiteboard listing ideas including:

• Family

• School

• Education

• Culture

• Media

• Politics

Those who understood strategy recognised something significant.

A coalition was beginning to form.

Freedom was on the rise and the enslavers were terrefied.

We Noticed

On 29 April, before we had ever met Charlie Kirk, we posted publicly.

We wrote about Camelot, freedom, truth seekers and what we believed represented a remarkable moment.

The following day we compared Ye with Cecil Beaton—not because of politics, but because both possessed the willingness to challenge convention.

A few days later my thoughts became even clearer.

We wrote that mental enslavement was the deepest form of slavery.

Whether people agreed or disagreed, we believed a new conversation had begun.

The Telephone Call

Then came an unexpected phone call.

Around 4–5 May 2018, a mutual friend contacted us.

His message was simple.

He believed Charlie Kirk should know us.

He had observed how we had worked alongside others supporting Donald Trump’s election campaign during 2015–2016 and felt we would understand Turning Point’s larger purpose.

An introduction was made.

Charlie replied enthusiastically.

Candace Owens was copied into the earliest correspondence with Charlie. They were planning a visit to London.

That was the moment our acquaintance which led to our friendship began.

Jerusalem

On 14 May 2018, Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens travelled together to Jerusalem for the opening of the United States Embassy.

History was moving quickly.

Yet looking backwards now, one can see that many of the relationships which would shape the following years had already been formed during those remarkable days at the end of April and beginning of May.

Looking Back

With hindsight, pause for just a moment.

Forget today’s arguments.

Forget personalities.

Forget the noise.

Simply consider the convergence.

A globally recognised cultural figure.

A rising political commentator.

A young activist building one of America’s fastest-growing youth organisations.

New friendships forming.

Ideas spreading.

Connections being made.

History often turns not through one event but through the convergence of many seemingly unrelated events occurring within days of one another.

What Followed

Following our introduction to Charlie Kirk, our friendship developed rapidly.

Together we discussed strategy, communications, long-term vision and perhaps most interestingly and importantly what later became plans for a substantial new media platform intended to challenge what were regarded as harmful legacy media narratives.

The meeting in London marked the conceptual start and inception point of Charlies larger media platform.

Introductions were made.

Relationships were built.

Donors were introduced.

As a consequence of those relationships, friends of ours committed many tens of millions towards Charlie Kirk and Turning Point funding, with much more additional support following later. But much more than money was the convergence of bright minds.

Those introductions were made freely.

There were no contractual obligations.

No demands.

No conditions attached from our side.

To appreciate the scale of that support and relative increase of funding for Turning Point at that time and what it meant, it is worth remembering that Turning Point USA’s annual revenue at the time was approximately $6 million.

The resources being assembled represented, in our view, a transformational opportunity Charlie felt so too.

Which may be why in 2019 Charlie wrote this.

But we doubt that any other this would have happened - in the way that it did certainly for us - without that SEVEN WORD TWEET of Ye’s.

And while it has been well reported but is no less significant in its import, Candace’s chance or providentially inspired meeting in London with George who became her husband and her spiritual and intellectual partner in a life lived in the fulness of Christ’s love, also in part occurred as a direct consequence of these motions.

Anyway that is what we saw and what we see.

Why This Matters

People often ask when history changed.

Most search for elections.

Wars.

Financial crashes.

Presidential inaugurations.

Sometimes the answer is much smaller.

Sometimes history changes because one individual writes seven words on a social media platform.

Those words lead to one meeting.

That meeting leads to one introduction.

One introduction becomes lifelong friendships.

Friendships become ideas.

Ideas become institutions.

Institutions influence nations.

Looking back now, I do not see merely a celebrity tweet.

I see one of those rare moments when multiple paths converged and the future quietly chose a different direction.

Whether one agrees with every individual involved is almost beside the point.

The sequence itself deserves study.

Because sometimes eternity whispers before history shouts.

It is always a mistake to imagine that benign spiritual purposes die with the death of the body.

On the contrary. One of the laws of power and affluence is that those factors and vectors that contributed to a motion, if validated and acknowledged, can always recreate that motion again and can indeed take that motion to even greater heights and levels of achievement if accurately spotted.

Once one begins to look at the world through that lens, many of the great struggles of our age become remarkably simple.

Order versus chaos.

The financial system that has dominated much of the modern world increasingly resembles the latter rather than the former. It rewards proximity to political power instead of productive endeavour. Whether one attributes this to incompetence, vested interests or something darker, the practical effect is the same: confusion.

Confusion is the natural habitat of corruption.

A confused population is easier to manipulate.

Many people continue to think of Bitcoin merely as another investment, another technology company, another speculative asset or another payment mechanism. They fundamentally misunderstand what has been created.

The more people understand Bitcoin and the blockchain, the more difficult it becomes for obsolete financial structures to maintain their monopoly over trust.

The implications extend far beyond finance.

Technology itself is becoming one of the most powerful forces shaping human consciousness.

Artificial intelligence, digital media and increasingly sophisticated communication systems possess an unprecedented ability to influence thought, emotion and behaviour. They can elevate civilisation or degrade it. They can cultivate sanity or manufacture confusion.

Technology itself possesses no morality.

Its effect depends entirely upon the degree of sanity of those who design, govern and deploy it.

The tool is neutral.

Its operator is not.

This places an enormous responsibility upon those building the next generation of technological civilisation.

If these systems are built upon integrity, transparency and respect for human freedom, they have the potential to make mankind wiser, healthier and wealthier.

If they are built upon manipulation, censorship and deception, they may become instruments of unprecedented psychological control.

The choice remains ours.

The ancient maxim “As above, so below” reminds us that order begins first in thought before it manifests in society. Civilisations ultimately become reflections of the ideas that govern them.

Restore clarity and institutions follow.

Restore truth and prosperity follows.

Restore sanity and civilisation itself becomes capable of flourishing once again.

Bitcoin should therefore be understood not simply as a financial innovation, but as one manifestation of a much broader movement towards transparency, integrity and verifiable truth.

It is one example of what happens when understanding replaces confusion.

When sanity replaces insanity.

And when human beings choose creation over corruption.

It is a wiser civilisation, a healthier society and a freer humanity.

That is a future worth building.

There is a rather uncomfortable truth about the modern world that many people instinctively understand, even if they rarely articulate it.

There are moments when a man’s life ceases to be a matter of biography and becomes, instead, a question.

The Iran war crisis provided precisely such a moment. It was, in every meaningful sense, the first true test of Charlie Kirk’s legacy and, more pointedly, of those who claimed to stand closest to him.

For it is one thing to speak of restraint in private, and quite another to uphold it when the machinery of escalation is already in motion.

By the time of his death, Charlie had made his position unmistakably clear. He had warned that a war with Iran would be a catastrophic mistake, and urged those within the system to prevent such a course.

Marjorie Taylor Greene broke from the gravitational pull of loyalty to state plainly that such a war was “not what we voted for,” pairing sentiment with the more tangible prospect of congressional constraint.

Many grass roots MAGA loyalists expressed the same conclusion in more forceful terms, framing the issue as a direct betrayal of “America First” and rejecting the return to regime-change wars.

Within government, Thomas Massie sought to impose constitutional discipline through War Powers mechanisms.

Joe Kent, in perhaps the most tangible act of dissent, resigned rather than lend his name to a policy he believed unjustified.

Beyond these American figures, the response was not confined within national borders.

International voices like Piers Morgan and others merged not merely as participants, but as amplifiers of the same common sense sane essential truths across a wider international stage.

People who could not in good conscience live to see a civilisation wiped from the face of the earth.

As long-standing supporters of Trump and the movement, their intervention carried the authority of continuity rather than departure.

Through sustained public commentary and media platforms, they highlighted civilian consequences, economic destabilisation, and the widening divergence between principle and policy. They articulated, clearly and repeatedly, that one could oppose the Iranian regime while rejecting the destruction of its people; that to stand against war was not to abandon the movement, but to defend its core.

Each of these people’s role was not peripheral.

It was catalytic to a peaceful outcome.

An Absence of a Different Kind,

Yet if this moment revealed the strength of certain friendships, it also revealed something else.

An absence.

For while individuals stepped forward, often at personal or political cost, the institutional voice most closely associated with Charlie Kirk was, by contrast, notably restrained.

The organisation he founded, nurtured, and helped to build, Turning Point USA was not at the forefront of this defining moment.

Its messaging, at a time when Charlie’s final position might reasonably have been expected to find its clearest institutional expression, was conspicuously muted.

This is not to suggest opposition.

But absence, in such moments, carries its own meaning.

For institutions are not merely judged by what they say.

But by what they do not say when it matters most.

Across different platforms, constituencies, and geographies, a single underlying truth emerged: the trajectory toward war was neither inevitable nor justified, and could not withstand sustained scrutiny.

And in that scrutiny, something shifted.

For facts and truth, clearly stated, repeatedly articulated, and widely distributed, have a peculiar power. They do not merely challenge narratives; they dissolve them.

They make it harder to sustain illusion, harder to claim consensus, harder to proceed without question.

What had been presented as settled began to appear contingent.

What had been framed as necessary became debatable.

Momentum slowed.

And it is in moments such as these, that slowing is everything.

The Test

For if a legacy means anything, it must be capable of surviving the individual.

It must pass, altered perhaps, but recognisably intact, into the hands of others.

The same man stands before you.

The same history reassures you.

But the presence, the choosing and resisting core, is absent.

The end of the age of innocence was not the loss of trust.

…but in Plymouth.

The Birth of a Doctrine: The Plymouth Brethren

In the early 19th century, a small and austere Christian movement emerged in Britain: the Plymouth Brethren.

It was here that John Nelson Darby, an Anglo-Irish clergyman of formidable intellect and rigid conviction, began to articulate a new reading of scripture — one that would fracture Christian theology and, in time, reshape geopolitics.

Darby’s central innovation was deceptively simple, yet utterly transformative:

He divided history into distinct “dispensations” — epochs in which God interacts with humanity according to different rules.

More importantly, he separated Israel from the Church — insisting that the Jewish people retained a unique, prophetic role that must be fulfilled in history.

This was no longer theology as moral guidance.

It was theology as timeline.

A script.

A schedule.

And crucially — an unfinished one.

From Doctrine to Distribution: The Scofield Bible

Ideas alone do not change the world.

Enter the Scofield Reference Bible, first published in 1909 by Cyrus I. Scofield — a text that did something unprecedented.

By the mid-20th century, a significant portion of American evangelical Christianity had absorbed — often unknowingly — a worldview in which:

• Israel’s restoration was prophetically required

• Middle Eastern conflict was inevitable

• Global crisis was a precursor to divine intervention

In short:

History was not to be guided — but fulfilled.

The Americanisation of Prophecy

As the United States rose to global dominance, it did not merely export democracy, capitalism, or culture.

It exported belief.

Dispensationalism, once a niche theological system born in British dissent, became an American political force.

Through televangelism, political lobbying, and the emergence of the Christian Right, it embedded itself within the bloodstream of public life.

This gave rise to Christian Zionism — not as a fringe idea, but as a powerful electoral reality.

A worldview in which:

• Support for Israel is not strategic, but sacred

• Opposition to Israel is not political, but heretical

• Conflict in the region is not tragic, but prophetic

Politicians, ever attuned to the currents beneath them, adapted accordingly.

Not always consciously.

Not always cynically.

But inevitably.

From Jerusalem to Tehran: The Logic of Escalation

Once one accepts the premises of dispensationalism, the logic unfolds with chilling clarity:

If Israel must be central to the end-times narrative…

If conflict in the region is foretold…

If great war precedes divine resolution…

Then tension is not something to defuse.

It is something to expect.

Perhaps even to facilitate.

And so the political posture hardens:

• Diplomacy becomes delay

• De-escalation becomes denial

• War becomes, quietly, the unfolding of destiny

Iran, in this framework, is not merely a nation-state.

It is a character in a script.

The Nuclear Threshold

And now we stand where all such thinking ultimately leads:

At the threshold.

The distance between conventional conflict and nuclear exchange is not measured in miles — but in minutes.

Miscalculation.

Retaliation.

Escalation.

In a world already primed by ideological certainty, the margin for error collapses.

What is most unsettling is not that leaders desire nuclear war.

It is that some among the influential strata of belief may view catastrophic conflict not as the ultimate failure…

…but as the final confirmation.

When war is seen as prophecy fulfilled, restraint becomes philosophically fragile.

And when restraint weakens, catastrophe ceases to be unthinkable.

The Quiet Capture of the West

This is not a conspiracy in the vulgar sense.

It is something more subtle — and more powerful.

A cultural capture.

A migration of ideas:

From a 19th-century sect in Plymouth…

To annotated scripture in the Scofield Bible…

To American pulpits…

To political platforms…

To foreign policy…

Until, finally, it sits — largely unexamined — at the edge of nuclear decision-making.

Not declared.

Not debated.

The Great Inversion Revisited

What we are witnessing is not merely political failure.

It is theological inversion.

Christianity, at its civilisational best, tempered empire.

Dispensationalism, at its political worst, can inflame it.

Where once faith urged humility, it now risks underwriting certainty.

Where once it sought peace, it now risks accommodating war.

The Final Reckoning

And so we return to the question that now presses upon us with existential urgency:

How did we come so close to the unthinkable?

Not by accident.

Not by a single decision.

But by a chain of ideas —

quietly adopted,

widely disseminated,

politically absorbed —

until they began to shape the very framework through which decisions are made.

Conclusion: Stepping Back from the Edge

To question this influence is not to attack faith.

It is to defend reason.

To insist that policy must be guided by reality — not by apocalyptic expectation.

To reassert that the role of statesmanship is not to fulfil prophecy…

…but to prevent catastrophe.

For if we fail to disentangle belief from power —

if we allow theology to script geopolitics —

then the next step beyond this present moment…

may not be rhetorical.

It may be irreversible

Dear Friends, Followers and Subscribers, our dear Americans,

Seeing as one and all are reminiscing about Charlie Kirk today in light of the Iran war, I thought I would make something that happened crystal clear.

We had dinner with Charlie Kirk in London last May 2025, and when Charlie I walked privately after dinner in Hyde Park, Charlie told me then that in his view Bibi Netanyahu was a psychopath and that the actions taken by his government in Gaza were psychopathic.

We already knew that, so it was no shock to me, but it was good to see that his evaluation and capacity to observe the obvious was present and sane.

Charlie had completely changed his mind and his position on Israel from when I first met him in Dec 2018, and in May 2025 he did not support their actions in Gaza or many of the actions of their government, particularly their growing destructive influence in America.

Previously he had been one of Israel’s biggest champions, so this was indeed a complete change. We had witnessed his support of Israel previously as we had visited Israel with him in spring 2019 when he had held almost completely the opposite view.

Charlie was also totally against any military engagement with Iran by America. And he told me in London that he had written a few days previously to Israeli leadership to express his disappointment.

Erika, Charlie’s wife, shortly afterward on June 17th and 18th, communicated to us that she suported Charlie completely concerning his view of the insanity of involving the US in a war with Iran and the importance his attempts to achieve a peaceful resolution.

And she communicated that directly to us in writing.

She also, and most importantly, indicated that she did not agree with how biblical scripture was being used and was being twisted by pastors and politicians to justify their support of military action.

This discussion is historically important in the light of discussions about dispensationalism* (see definition below) and how the Bible is being interpreted today by many politicians and military leaders to justify the current war.

She stated very clearly that “the pastors” in Charlie’s orbit were “hungry for war.”

That was her worry at that time, and Erika was VERY disturbed by it.

Charlie was not alone in his views.

Many feel the same way today.

The elderly in America and the boomer generation seem to be somewhat unconscious on the subject of harmful Israeli government action and how it affects the entire future of America and the world.

Charlie’s view was that most of the youth of today will never forgive Israel for the needless slaughter of innocent children in Gaza, and he suspected that they would not forgive Trump for a future war with Iran either.

Charlie did his best to warn President Trump about this and what voters and the Trump base were telling him on June 18 last year.

He did this knowingly at great personal risk to his personal relationship and friendship with the President.

Today, the youth of the world and young voters in America, on the whole, have recognised that Trump’s actions in Iran are insane and that they have been encouraged by psychopaths.

I personally believe that there is a possibility that Charlie was executed for his efforts to prevent the Iran war.

This is my opinion.

This matter and Charlie’s execution should be completely investigated.

If an American citizen was executed by a foreign power for expressing their opinion, then we should be aware of that.

I am not alone in that thought either.

Charlie was one of my best friends; we communicated directly (often daily) since April 2018. We achieved a tremendous amount together.

I have strong reason to believe that there is a possibility that he has been betrayed by several of those around him.

In our work together Charlie, Irina and I quietly helped to prevent the USA from involving itself in at least four other military engagements and wars. And together we helped to calm down and pacify a few others.

We discussed various religious principles with Charlie and his wife, and he applied them liberally and often, very effectively, to resolve conflicts, to create peace in the world, and for peacemaking purposes with those he advised.

We also helped him to expand Turning Point and Turning Point Action into an election-winning machine.

He trusted me and I trusted him as a friend.

Charlie trusted Candace and always had her back. Even when others tried to cut their line and valuable connection, he always protected it.

Sadly, freedom-fighting groups and governments do get infiltrated by psychopaths and psychopathic philosophies and ideas. The same is true of religions and of political parties.

Entire religions can be destroyed by mis informed or deliberate alteration of their scriptures.

It destroys their workability. It can change history forever.

We all saw this clearly during Covid and have seen it on other occasions.

Well-intentioned beings do sometimes get unjustly attacked.

And sometimes, as is apparent, they do get killed.

I have no doubt that were Charlie here and had he not been betrayed and not been publicly executed, we would not now have a war in Iran.

I certainly would never tell you what to think, but as I have first-hand knowledge of these matters that are relevant to the current state of the world, I thought we should share them.

I am sharing them here because, left unchecked, the psychopaths that have encouraged and engaged in the Iran war can destroy all the hopes of freedom that we have.

Millions can die.

The depth of the evil that Charlie was aware of may be way too much for the world to confront at this time.

It is extremely hard to confront.

But the alternative is not to confront it, and that, my friends, is why he withdrew his support from the psychopaths that were trying to control him.

It is also why we support Candace Owens in her pursuit of truth.

When I drove home from Oxford University, where Charlie last spoke in England in May 2025, I had the odd perception that it would be the last time I would see him. He had been privately talking like a dead man walking.

It was as if he was talking his obituary over supper. Another person present noticed that too and commented on it.

Charlie had noticed what was occurring in the USA at its heart, and it seemed that he knew his fate.

I hope this helps you understand what is shaping and happening in America this week.

I am disclosing this at this time as it is vital in the history and future of America and as several American servicemen have already lost their lives in this Iranian war. There is a high probability that many more will do so, and I know that Charlie would expect me to do what we can to prevent any further loss of life.

* Dispensationalism is a system of interpreting the Bible which teaches that God has governed human history through a series of distinct “dispensations” — different periods in which God relates to humanity under particular rules or covenants.

The word dispensation simply means a way God administers His relationship with mankind during a particular era of history.

The Basic Idea

Dispensationalism says that history unfolds in divinely organised stages. In each stage:

• God gives humanity a particular responsibility.

• Humanity eventually fails that responsibility.

• God judges or resets the situation.

• A new stage begins.

This framework is primarily used to interpret biblical prophecy, especially books like the Book of Daniel, the Book of Revelation, and the Book of Ezekiel.

The Classic Seven Dispensations

Most dispensationalists divide history into seven periods:

1.Innocence – From Adam and Eve before the Fall.

2.Conscience – After the Fall until Noah’s Flood.

3.Human Government – From Noah to Abraham.

4.Promise – From Abraham to Moses.

5.Law – From Moses and the Ten Commandments until Jesus Christ.

6.Grace (the Church Age) – From Christ until the future Second Coming.

7.Millennial Kingdom – The future 1,000-year reign of Christ, described in the Book of Revelation.

A Key Feature: Israel and the Church

One of the defining ideas of dispensationalism is that God has two distinct programs:

• Israel — God’s covenant nation in the Old Testament.

• The Church — the spiritual community beginning after Christ.

Dispensationalists usually believe that many biblical prophecies about Israel are still to be literally fulfilled in the future.

Origins of the Doctrine

The modern system was developed in the 1800s by John Nelson Darby, a leader of the Plymouth Brethren.

It spread widely through the influential Scofield Reference Bible, which included dispensational notes explaining Scripture.

Why It Matters

Dispensationalism strongly influences:

• Evangelical interpretations of prophecy

• Beliefs about the Rapture

• Views about the modern state of Israel

• End-times expectations

It is particularly common in American evangelical Christianity.

In short:

Dispensationalism is a way of reading the Bible that sees history as a sequence of divinely planned eras, each revealing a different stage in God’s relationship with humanity.

History has a habit of whispering warnings to those who care to listen.

Unfortunately, power has an equally persistent habit of ignoring them.

If the United States under Donald Trump chooses to march into conflict with Iran, the shadow that stretches across the centuries is unmistakable: the disastrous campaign of Marcus Licinius Crassus, whose invasion of Persia ended in catastrophe at the Battle of Carrhae.

The parallels are not perfect — history rarely repeats so neatly — but they are instructive enough to give any statesman pause.

The Original Western Invasion of Persia

In 53 BC, Crassus, the richest man in Rome and one of the three rulers of the Roman Republic, sought military glory to rival that of Julius Caesar and Pompey.

He marched east with approximately seven legions — roughly 40,000 men — intending to conquer the Parthian Empire and seize its wealth.

He ignored the warnings of allies, rejected safer routes, and advanced deep into hostile territory.

The Parthians responded with a style of warfare Rome scarcely understood.

At Carrhae, a small Parthian force commanded by Surena used mobile cavalry and horse archers to surround the Roman legions in the desert. Roman heavy infantry — formidable in European battlefields — proved helpless against a fast-moving enemy that could strike from distance and disappear before counterattack.

The result was catastrophic:

• Around 20,000 Roman soldiers killed

• 10,000 captured

• Crassus himself dead

• Roman prestige shattered across the East.

The Euphrates became the effective boundary between Rome and Persia for generations.

Rome had learned a painful lesson: Persia is not easily conquered.

Persia: The Graveyard of Western Ambition

From Crassus onward, the story repeats.

Roman emperors invaded Persia again and again — with mixed success, but rarely decisive victory. Later empires would learn the same lesson:

• Alexander succeeded briefly but his empire collapsed after his death.

• Rome and Persia fought for centuries without decisive conquest.

• The British Empire failed to dominate the wider region.

• The Soviet Union failed in nearby Afghanistan.

• The United States struggled for two decades in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The geography itself fights the invader: vast distances, mountains, deserts, and a civilisation accustomed to resisting foreign domination.

Iran is not merely a state.

It is a civilisation over 2,500 years old.

And civilisations fight differently than regimes.

The Psychology of Great Power Overreach

Crassus did not invade Persia because he had to.

He invaded because he wanted glory.

His colleagues Caesar and Pompey had conquered Gaul and the East. He needed a triumph of his own.

Ambition, prestige, domestic politics — these are ancient forces in statecraft.

Modern superpowers are not immune to them.

Military planners can calculate missiles and logistics. But the deeper calculation is psychological: pride, perception, and the intoxicating belief that power guarantees victory.

Crassus possessed the finest army of his age.

It did not save him.

The Lesson Carrhae Still Teaches

The true tragedy of Carrhae was not simply military defeat.

It was strategic blindness.

Rome assumed that because it dominated the Mediterranean world it could dominate Persia as well.

That assumption proved fatal.

Every empire eventually confronts this moment — the moment when power mistakes itself for inevitability.

Persia has historically been the place where that illusion dissolves.

If Washington today contemplates war with Iran, the desert plains near Carrhae still whisper their warning across two millennia:

Great empires are not destroyed by weak enemies.

They are destroyed by overconfidence.

And somewhere in the sands of Mesopotamia lies the skull of Crassus — a relic of the last man who believed Persia would be easy.
