As someone trained since childhood to think in terms of maritime rules of the road, seamanship and civic/ecological stewardship, it seems our best course of action for reaching out to latent allies in the current stew of corrupt simulated reality, is to first find common ground through word, art and action that reaches people’s hearts before attempting to change their minds on what is real and who is working in our national best interest. We need to foster and illuminate attractive alternative ways of working towards sociopolitical and ecological regeneration and equitable balance, in contrast to being cyclically manipulated baitfish in an extractive system that will ultimately grind us up.

We can look towards the humane guidance drawn from collective centuries of experience and rigorously formed perspectives offered daily through The Steady State and we can participate in the process of defending decency and, the necessary reform and strengthening of democracy. Our constitution was created with the intent of it being a living document. It is still our freedom and obligation to constructively aid the process.

Thanks and gratitude goes out today to Bill Piekney for having the courage to continue sharing his clear, objective insight on the nature of the real threat to democracy that the Trump maladministration is, and to Professor Heather Cox Richardson for her current Letter From An American, where-in she further dissects and labels the network and nodes of criminality that our corrupt congress & SCOTUS are enabling. Their two current, excellent - public notice essays are being shared here as my civic duty to help amplify their warnings with fellow democracy defenders and people of good will.

The brazen & perverse abuse of power - machine that is Trump’s domination of The Republican Party is a metasticized cancer that has rapdily consumed most of our federal governance framework. Dissenting federal judges, opposing states & individuals that will not comply with being extorted are all that is preventing USA from becoming a fully made-partner with fascist mafia state - Russia. It’s up to clear eyed democracy defenders to save and reform democracy now, much like the Minutemen started the American revolution against tyrany in 1776. Our commitment to freedom is based on the same natural rights expressed by James Otis in defense of colonist’s resistance in the Kings Court in Boston in 1761. His clarification of native, natural rights were expressed in his speech to the King’s court and the written document, “Against Writs of Assistance”. As in 1761 we are not requried to assist in the dismantling of democracy and decency now.

The shambolic & diseased mess that is the Trump Republican party doesn’t have the energy or ability to realize their goal of hegomony over the Western hemisphere unless we allow them to do it. Ample resilience exists within USA to stop their coup d’etat. Mr. Piekney’s analysis of extortion as the terminal stage of corruption (linked below) resonates deeply with something I’ve been watching unfold most of my life across multiple domains; politics, media, economics, ecology, and culture. What we are living through now is not just a crisis of governance; it is a crisis of dramaturgy. Trump’s 2015 second attempt at the presidency began with, and continues to rely on, the production mechanics of fake reality television he was allowed to indulge in on NBC. Chaotic and disruptive spectacle has replaced civic purpose. Dramatic performance has replaced the institution of governance, and the metastasis of extortion Bill Piekney clearly describes is the predictable outcome of that collapse.

Just yesterday, NPR interviewed two TMZ reporters who have set up shop in Washington and joined the White House press pool. They said, without irony, that politics “already behaves like reality television,” and therefore they are appropriate narrators of our civic life. That felt like a blaring cultural inflection point to me - not because TMZ arrived, but because the political system has already become the stage they specialize in; cognitive soveriegnty dissolving bullshit. Fake reality tv dramaturgy has consumed democracy, something many objective observers have been pointing out since 2015.

This is the pattern Goethe warned about in Der Zauberlehrling, and that Disney animated so vividly in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice: an inexperienced figure imitates mastery, unleashes forces he cannot control, and mistakes escalating chaos for power. The broom keeps multiplying. The flood keeps rising. The apprentice insists he is in command. And similar to the void of silence in space where real national leaders should be providing stability and positive direction, the stabilizing authority capable of restoring order and productive direction is nowhere to be found. This has been engineered by militant, neo feudal hegemonic oligopolists over the last fifty five years.

Our modern broom is partially the extractive political media ecosystem: outrage cycles, algorithmic amplification, serving oligarchic capture of resources, means of production, and people’s attention. We’ve been colonized by oligarchs who’ve normalized manufactured spectacle as civic understanding. Extortion is not an aberration; it is the logical next step when dramaturgy replaces deliberation. A kakistocracy metastasizes when the worst actors learn to weaponize spectacle more effectively and faster than institutions can defend against it.

What feels missing from our public discourse is not diagnosis. We have plenty of that from historians, journalists, and scholars. We need more positive, regenerative paradigms that offer people a vision of civic life beyond extraction, fear, and spectacle if we are to prevent extractive oligopolists from starting a new cycle of manipulation. This Thunderdome total war all the time exercise by Trump & Co. will not last. We need to show new alternative paradigms now, rooted in peace not as passivity, but as coexistence, reciprocity, stewardship, ecological belonging, and cultural continuity based on true ethical and spiritual common ground. Positive new paradigms are emerging in new economic thinking, in science, in community ecology, in the arts, and in the work of people quietly building sustainable and regenerative alternatives to the extractive cycle at replicable small scale in neighborhoods.

Mr. Piekney’s piece helps illuminate the danger. The next step, for all of us, is to notice who in our culture is already articulating the antidote; the people creating meaning, beauty, and regenerative civic imagination in a time when the neo feudal oligopolist’s broom, amplified by AI deployed without wisdom or stewardship, continues its autonomous and destabilizing march. We don’t have to comply with the planned distruction of our commons and our ability to defend ourselves.

A final note: There are many well researched and put-into-practice, workable alternatives to the entrencehed extractive capitalism model that is accelerating the Anthropocene and socio-political stress resulting from it. I show links to the history of positive paradigms and how they are applicable to resilient and sustainable reform. What is missing today is more, rapid self-organizing defense of democracy and ecology that is seriously needed. Americans still have a broad base of shared values. We can use well-shaped AI and smart politics message framing to help steer through the complexity of quickly developing new ivisions of possibility and their clear logic of new postive and sustainable paradigms.

In this section they noted the documented - fast corrosive effect on individual and cohort cognitive sovereignty resulting from even brief reliance on AI for help / research in establishing initial paths of inquiry. They noted that for a lot of people, it’s hard to think in the manner necessary to start productive consideration about it. Our collective cognitive sovereignty, intellectual habits, and epistemic foundations have been significantly degraded by the prevalence of algorithmic manipulation throughout mainstream media, social media, and just the process of using the internet. In my view, our consciousness has been colonized and commodified for the use of increasingly hegemonic owner/operators of data, power (both compute and governance), and resources.

The comments section of this Futurology post are valuable. One commentor references Blake & Gilman’s Children Of A Modest Star - Planetary Thinking For An Age of Crises; a crucial book (IMO) that highlights subsidiarity as a major basis for civic & governance organization. I agree with her. In my logic it leads to foundational small groups organized around the geography of drainage basins focusing on care for nature & each other to achieve maximum practical mutual benefit, with earth as equal partner.

By necessity it would start on relative microscale basis, scaling up to neighborhood, town/city, state, & region. Reality of good governance & economics in this framework depends on ditching extractivive capitalism & developing new paradigms based on regenerative & recipricol systems (1); how nature self-organizes for balance & sustainability, ie the Planetarity element of the concept.

Governance based on natural rights & self-reliance in the context of social responsibility scales up parallel to stewardship of the commons. (For reference see William James clarification of RW Emerson self-reliance as self-reliance in the context of social responsibility) (2) Progressive scaling up essentially recreates indigenous pre-industialization & pre-colonization micro-scale and meta-scale governance frameworks that existed in the Western hemisphere for about 10,000 years. All of this is my attempt to capture something vaguely implied near the end of the conversation; speculating on what then must we do? The following is in relation a commentor’s observation / question on the absurdity of some kind of competent & benevolent form of governance magically precipitating out of Chernoble-like, or more existential AI megalomania induced crisis. In my view, enough sober-minded people of good will and influence are engaged in current events to head off magical thinking. We can collectively evaluate the reality of our governance and culture to appropriately fix our operating paradigms. It takes a lot more grassroots education and motivation to achieve more than critical mass level to succeed. AI will be needed to weave the duality of complexity & simplicity into maximum practical mutually beneficial systems - based on regenerative, equitable, resilient & sustainable frameworks for both people & earth. We need to cool and quiet down the scene to keep our heads straight enough to stick to the task.

Diagnosis is not enough. The question that matters is the one they left open: What can ordinary people do?

The answer isn’t in Washington or Silicon Valley, but in neighborhood drainage basins, the smallest competent unit of democratic life. And it begins with a concept older than the Republic, older than the Enlightenment, or our colonial era: regenerative civic ecology.

This essay argues that the future of American democracy will be shaped by how we repair our places, our drainage basins, our streets, our soils, our waters, our associations, our shared responsibilities. It argues that ecological repair is democratic repair. And it argues that the United States can regain moral and ecological leadership not through extractive and monopolized dominance, but through example, striving to become a regenerative, democratic republic.

To understand how, we must begin with the ground beneath our feet.

I. Neighborhoods: The Smallest Competent Scale

Subsidiarity, the principle that decisions should be made at the smallest competent scale, is not an ancient Roman Catholic organizational concept alone. It is a democratic idea, an Indigenous idea, a Jamesian idea, and a practical idea. It is how communities solve problems, how trust is built, how civic competence is learned and individual & group cognitive sovereignty is built with bedrock foundations.

Neighborhoods are where:

• people know one another and solve common problems together to find maximum practical mutually beneficial solutions

• ecological conditions are visible and objectively understood

• flooding, heat, and pollution are felt

• effective civic associations form and actively shape their neighborhood as essential partners in town and city governance

• democratic habits are practiced and continually reinforce shared cognitive sovereignty

• shared identity emerges

A neighborhood can plant trees, native underbrush and food gardens, restore soil, manage stormwater, build resilience hubs as integral parts of essential green infrastructure, and form associations that become the backbone of civic life, and / or worker owned community wealth building enterprises. This is not nostalgia. It is the foundation of democratic resilience. It’s based in our history of pulling ourselves out of catastrophe created by unrestrained extractive capitalist domination.

II. Drainage Basins: Ecology as Civic Architecture

Drainage basins are the natural unit of ecological reality and sociopolitical organization. Water, soil, vegetation, pollution, and climate do not respect municipal boundaries. When neighborhoods coordinate within a basin, they create:

• shared hydrological planning

• green infrastructure networks

• ecological corridors

• community driven climate adaptation

This is the heart of the Port Dorchester civic ecological framework and proposal, ecological repair as civic repair.

A basin is not just a hydrological feature. It is a civic commons.

III. Cities and States: Regeneration Scales Up

When basins organize, cities gain:

• reduced flooding

• improved water quality

• cooler microclimates

• healthier soils

• stronger civic associations

• lower emergency costs = lower insurance and bonding costs

When cities organize, states gain:

• coordinated watershed management

• equitable infrastructure investment

• ecological restoration economies

• democratic renewal focused on environmental and social justice through civic participation

This is how subsidiarity becomes Planetarity in practice.

IV. Regions and the Nation: A Regenerative Republic

When states coordinate across bioregions, the nation gains:

• ecological stability

• democratic resilience

• community competence

• fair economics

• reduced inequality

• restored trust

• cultural renewal

This is how the United States builds new democratic organizing structures and earns the credibility and respect to regain global leadership:

Not through extraction, but through regeneration, not through rhetoric, but through equitable practice, not through corrupt extractive dominance, but through solidly verifiable and replicable example.

V. The Moral Foundation: A Quilt of American Traditions

This regenerative vision is not sectarian. It is not ideological. It is not countercultural. It is American.

Across the country, a handmade quilt of religious, spiritual, and secular communities share a common intuition:

• human dignity matters

• community matters

• stewardship matters

• solidarity matters

• ecological responsibility matters

• democratic participation matters

Catholic social teaching is one thread in this quilt, offering concepts like solidarity, subsidiarity, and the common good. Magnifica Humanitas adds a modern critique of techno utopianism and the reduction of humans to data objects. Querida Amazonia echoes Indigenous ecological wisdom.

But these insights resonate equally with:

• Black church traditions

• Jewish social justice

• Indigenous ecological stewardship

• Protestant civic theology

• Muslim ethics of care

• Buddhist compassion

• secular humanism

• neighborhood mutual aid

This is the moral foundation of regenerative civic ecology.

VI. A Quiet Historical Backbone: Jesuit Relations and the American Revolution

The idea that ecological stewardship and democratic self determination are linked is not new. The Jesuit Relations of the seventeenth century documented Indigenous models of consensus governance, ecological responsibility, and community autonomy. These texts influenced Enlightenment thinkers, Montesquieu, Diderot, Rousseau, and helped shape the American Revolution’s commitment to self determination.

This lineage matters because it shows that regenerative civic ecology is not a new invention. It is part of the original American political imagination.

VII. Extractive Systems Fail, Regenerative Systems Work

We see the consequences of extractive systems today in the private equity takeover of agriculture, where weakened inspection regimes and profit driven consolidation have led to food contamination crises, petrochemical waste contaminating our environment and the bloodstreams of all mamals. These failures are not accidents. They are symptoms of systems that ignore ecology, community, and the common good for the benefit of and ever smaller pinnacle of financial elite oligopolists and their mercenaries in government, the news media, and in some cases religious and civic groups.

Regenerative civic ecology offers a different path, one rooted in subsidiarity, Planetarity, and shared responsibility.

VIII. Cultural Imagination: Ginsberg, Hoffman, and Democratic Improvisation

Allen Ginsberg understood that democratic resilience requires cultural imagination, the ability to see beyond the narratives imposed by power. Abbie Hoffman understood that authoritarianism thrives when people stop believing they can’t act together for the commons.

Their insights matter today because they remind us that democracy is defended through improvisation, creativity, and community competence, the same ethos that allowed John Sebastian to step onto the Woodstock stage by impromptu necessity after the heavy rains came. He was qualified, available and rose to the occasion to gently and simply sing and play his message of solidarity. His natural response to circumstances was a poignant lesson in how Democracy survives when people step forward.

IX. A Humane and Essentially Simple Path Forward: Regeneration as Democratic Practice

We have:

• the ecological science

• the moral frameworks

• the democratic theory

• the cultural lineage

• the neighborhood models

• the basin based planning

• the regenerative economics

• the American moral quilt

• the AI boost needed to weave the duality of complexity and simplicity into practical civil ecological frameworks

What we need now is shared motivation.

The future of American democracy will not be saved by courts and valid info sharing alone, nor by elections alone, nor by technology alone. It will be saved by communities that repair their places, restore their waters, restore their soils, renew their associations, and reclaim their agency; our individual and shared cognitive sovereignty as Americans. It takes human energy and solidarity focused on environmental and social justice.

This is how we can become a regenerative republic, objectively qualified to lead again. It’s where we stand and how we can begin.

The destabilizing political moment the United States now faces did not arise suddenly; it is the predictable outcome of a long historical arc shaped by extractive capitalism, racialized systems of White male dominance, and the instrumental use of religion to sanctify oligarchic power. These forces have been accumulating for generations. They normalized corruption in business and government; eroded institutional guardrails; and created a cultural environment where dangerous leadership could flourish. For many Americans, especially those who came of age after the Cold War, the present crisis feels abrupt. Yet for anyone who has lived inside the long shadow of organized crime, political patronage, and the steady corrosion of public ethics, the trajectory is painfully familiar.

My own family’s experience in New York City and the metro region over five generations illustrates how organized crime became woven into everyday life; how its logic migrated into business practices; and how political actors eventually absorbed the same norms. What began as illicit enterprise gradually became a tolerated feature of the urban economy. The intimidation, loyalty, impunity, and transactional morality of organized crime seeped into legitimate business; from there, it entered politics. By the mid twentieth‑century, ethical resistance to this normalization had become a generational project. Figures such as Estes Kefauver and Robert Kennedy spent decades building the rationale for what eventually became the RICO statutes; laws designed to confront systemic corruption rather than isolated criminal acts. Yet today, Congress has allowed the spirit of those laws to be weakened; regulatory capture and bipartisan acquiescence have hollowed out the guardrails that once constrained dangerous actors. The country now faces the consequences of that erosion.

Within this landscape, the rise of a leader with a long public record of business cheating, personal exploitation, civil fraud findings, and a civil judgment for sexual assault is not an anomaly; it is a symptom of systemic decay. Public health experts such as Dr. Bandy X. Lee have shown how dangerous leadership operates as a collective psychiatric emergency; how hubris syndrome, shared psychosis, and the Dark Tetrad traits create escalating cycles of threat, grievance, and reality distortion; and how followers become psychologically enlisted to shield the leader from accountability. Neuroscientific research indicates that prolonged, unchecked power degrades empathy and risk awareness; political psychology studies show how authoritarian figures personalize power, purge institutions, and weaponize chaos to stay ahead of consequences. These patterns are not partisan interpretations; they are documented behaviors that emerge when individual pathology meets weakened democratic infrastructure.

The psychological dynamics at play are not abstract. Dangerous leaders do not simply resist accountability; they experience it as an existential threat. Hubris syndrome describes the acquired personality change that occurs when power is held without constraint; reality becomes distorted, criticism becomes intolerable, and overconfidence becomes a governing principle. Shared psychosis explains how followers adopt the leader’s paranoia and alternative reality; the leader’s personal delusions become a collective identity. The Dark Tetrad traits provide the behavioral fuel: narcissistic entitlement; Machiavellian manipulation; psychopathic risk‑seeking; and sadistic gratification in domination. When these traits are expressed through political power, the result is a public health crisis; a destabilizing force that corrodes institutions, fractures communities, and undermines democratic norms.

The political system’s complicity is central to understanding how this crisis became possible. These human networks create trust, legitimacy, and shared ecological knowledge. They are resistant to manipulation because they are embodied, relational, and place‑based. My take on Ambassador Ray’s consistent clear descriptions of the ongoing coup d’etat by malign corporate entities is that he posesses big picture perspective and reports it unambiguously. Sociopolitical writer Mike Madrid has a current essay on his Substack page titled The Great Transformation. His current essay titled Why Conservatism Imploded is very much in synch Ambassador Ray’s. Mr. Madrid highlights how & why Big Tech has subsumed so many government functions that were designed to preserve freedom. The legal pushback restraining this administration has come primarily from what might be called an archipelago of democracy‑defending states. These states are absorbing the financial and administrative burden of corrective action while the federal executive floods the zone with disinformation, procedural sabotage, and institutional chaos. Our constitutional mechanisms are intentionally slow, designed to prevent rash action. That slowness becomes a vulnerability when confronted with actors eager and now enabled by corrupted 6/9 SCOTUS and Republican Party controlled congress to exploit every gap in the system. State‑level “Little RICO” statutes offer one tool for documenting and countering organized efforts to subvert democratic governance. It’s necessary but can never catch up and stop the crazy train of democracy demolition underway in the US now.

Ukraine’s experience offers a different kind of lesson. Faced with existential threat, Ukraine reorganized itself with admirable speed and civic cohesion, resisting Russian aggression while simultaneously building a globally recognized defense‑technology sector. NATO and the EU now pursue joint ventures with Ukraine not out of charity but because Ukraine has demonstrated competence, innovation, and democratic resolve under extreme pressure. There is inspiration here for American states: not in militarization, but in strategic coordination, economic realignment, and the formation of new commercial alliances with fellow democracies around the world. Simultaneously, economic boycotts and divestment strategies can be powerful tools for isolating anti‑democratic funders and reducing their influence, as can massive and prolonged demonstrations as we see happening in Albania now. We also need to educate more Americans about the immediate domestic threat posed by authoritarian movements operating under what used to be the Republican Party. Millions of newly disillusioned former Trump–Vance voters have a unique moral standing to clearly alert others to the danger. Their voices can help shift public perception, possibly encourage accountability within the party, and remind fellow citizens of what is being lost through the ongoing demolition of democratic norms. Civic mobilization; peaceful, massive, and sustained, remains one of the most effective tools available to free people.

What Trump–Vance hegemonic intransigence makes plain is that they represent the persistent dark current in human political behavior; the drive toward domination, extraction, and colonization whenever access to power is unsecured by civic norms. Countering that requires more than resistance; it requires changing the underlying paradigms that have allowed wealth supremacy and racialized hierarchy to masquerade as inevitabilities in American life. For effective and sustainable reform of our democracy we need to shift toward regenerative economics concurrently with regenerative civic and environmental frameworks; systems that align human flourishing with ecological balance and democratic self‑governance. These approaches don’t merely avoid harm; they generate shared resilience, shared capacity, and shared prosperity. Regeneration doesn’t shrink the wealth of a society; it broadens it, placing prosperity in the hands of many rather than the few. It’s what we claim to be in our pledge of allegiance.

Yeats’s phrase “mere anarchy” uses mere in its older sense as pure, singular essence but also a paradox where the minimal becomes a hegemonic singularity of chaos. It’s a perfect description of the hybrid system we’re living through: a fusion of criminal extraction, mythic authoritarian politics, and engineered unreality; a kind of criminal spectacle authoritarianism expressing as a toxic sociopolitical excrescence that Hungarian voters just rejected.

Professor HCR’s essay also points toward something deeper: extractive capitalism and neoliberalism externalized the cost of their toxic waste onto nature and society until the toxicity returns to the surface and/or through the food chain. We see this in nature. Migratory birds, blinded by urban glow caused by unrestrained petrochemical industtry power, lose their celestial navigation and fall into disorientation and predation. In old industrial harbors, when a heavily laden ship docks, the pilot’s final maneuvers: tugs pushing or pulling perpendicular to the dock or wharf, rudder hard over, minimal astern power, the bottom gets churned. Decades of petrochemical waste mired in harbor bottom sediment rises in a fluorescent, multicolored, nauseating swirl with toxic polyaromatic hydrocarbons released into the atmosphere and through the lungs and sinus passages of mariners and dockworkers, into their bloodstreams, just like so many waterfowl absorb petrochemical toxins and microplastic. It’s gradual death caused by unrestrained greed and malevolence.

These are not just metaphors. They are structural analogues for what happens in a society with long buried toxins of resentment, grievance, and extremism are resuspended by endemic and cyclical economic stress, media distortion, and political destabilization. The externalized costs of extractive capitalism always return, whether in poisoned water & air or poisoned socioeconomic / civic life.

Yeats, in 1919, having lived through the human grinding and earth despoiling horror of WW-I may have presaged what we see and experience today; the gyre widening and the loss of honest, direct communication and cognitive sovereignty. We could be metaphorical sitting ducks living inside the turbulence he described. Or we could choose, as evidenced by rising collective consciousness and willingness among democracy defenders to take action as we’re able, collectively pull the plug on the fecal matter - apocalypse horror show. Boycott the producers into oblivion and build new, regenerative, resilient, and sustainable paradigms that respect humanity and the earth as symbiotic partners in real life.

Together we can turn away from toxicity toward regneration.

Paid, hands‑on, incremental, technically skilled work is therapeutic. It builds confidence, competence, and community. It gives people a place to stand.

The initiative proposes a city‑wide network of micro‑scale green‑infrastructure and urban‑food‑production sites; green roofs, rain gardens, bioswales, pocket parks, rooftop beds, compost hubs. Each site is both a functional piece of public infrastructure and a training ground for people in recovery or re‑entry.

The following is a template for building civic ecology.

II. The Partnership Architecture: A City‑Wide Civic Institution

The model rests on a distributed ecosystem of partners in which no single institution carries the burden alone. The examples below are Boston‑based, but every major city has equivalents. Note: The institutions listed have not been approached. They’re used as examples.

• Haley House (a Catholic Worker institution) anchors the mission, culture, and daily training environment.

• Pine Street Inn (a homeless shelter +) provides wraparound support: housing, behavioral health, case management.

• UMass Boston (School for the Environment) leads ecological monitoring, curriculum development, and research.

• Wentworth Institute of Technology develops engineering templates and design standards.

• City and state agencies help align the work with climate‑resilience mandates and stormwater obligations.

• Philanthropic partners provide early‑stage capital under strict accountability.

• Industry partners, contribute technical expertise, equipment, and potential future employment pathways.

This is intended as a public‑private‑civic‑environmental institution.

III. The Micro‑Site: The First Unit of Regeneration

A professional Program Manager serves as the operational backbone: Maintaining partner relationships, enforcing template fidelity, coordinating funder reporting, supporting cooperative development, and guarding the mission’s Catholic Worker grounding.

This governance structure ensures that no single institution can dominate, dilute, or redirect the mission.

VIII. Why This Model Works Anywhere

The Port Dorchester model is portable because it is built on universal principles:

• Start small.

• Grow only as fast as your systems can support.

• Build work templates before you build sites.

• Treat people as contributors, not clients.

• Distribute authority.

• Align with government mandates.

• Build cooperatives, not dependencies.

• Document everything and maintain a public lessons‑learned archive.

Any city with stormwater challenges, food insecurity, heat islands, or environmental‑justice disparities can adapt this model.

IX. The Work Ahead

The only major component still needed is a full three‑year financial projection model; a task well‑suited to university partners once potential anchor institutions decide to move forward.

Everything else is already here: The mission, the structure, the partners, the base templates, the training pipeline, the cooperative pathway, the governance architecture.

What remains is for communities to recognize what is possible — and decide to begin.

Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is often remembered for its stylized violence, but its real subject is the attempt to manufacture obedience. The Ludovico Technique; a form of aversion therapy that forces the protagonist, Alex, to associate violence with physical sickness. It is the state’s effort to create a “good citizen” by destroying free will. It is a metaphor for authoritarian systems that treat people as raw material to be shaped, conditioned, and controlled. This is the logic of extractive governance. It is the logic of systems that see human beings not as agents but as instruments; tools to be disciplined, directed, and deployed.

But Kubrick does something subtle at the end of the film. The state’s coercive system collapses under its own contradictions. Alex regains agency. The possibility of a different society, one not built on conditioning flickers into view. It is not a utopian ending, but a threshold moment: the point where extractive control fails and regeneration becomes possible.

II. Aunty Entity and the Architecture of Extractive Capitalism

If A Clockwork Orange is about the psychology of control, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is about the political economy of control. Aunty Entity, played with charismatic ferocity by Tina Turner, is the first fully political figure in the Mad Max universe. She is not a warlord; she is a state‑builder. Bartertown is her creation; a city‑state built on scarcity, ritual, and spectacle.

Aunty Entity embodies the core features of what I call extractive political ecology:

• She builds a society on manufactured scarcity.

• She uses identity, ritual, and myth to maintain loyalty.

• She controls information through Master/Blaster.

• She enforces order through spectacle (the Thunderdome).

• She creates a closed‑loop economy with herself at the apex.

She is the charismatic authoritarian modernizer; the person who says, “Civilization requires discipline, and I will impose it.” She believes she is saving the world, and in her mind, she is. But her order is brittle. Her civilization is a performance. Her power depends on constant threat.

Bartertown is not a functioning society. It is a theater of control.

And yet, like Kubrick, Miller ends his film with a glimmer of regeneration. The children, the next generation, escape Bartertown and begin telling a new story. They form a new community. They begin building something cooperative, relational, and hopeful. It is the faint outline of a regenerative civic ecology.

III. Manufactured Scarcity: The Srnicek–Scafaria–Allen Triad

To understand why these films resonate so strongly today, we turn to three contemporary thinkers whose work illuminates the deeper forces at play.

Nick Srnicek: Scarcity as Political Technology

Srnicek argues that scarcity is not a natural condition but a political strategy. In late‑stage capitalism:

• Scarcity is engineered, not discovered.

• Scarcity is maintained, not solved.

• Scarcity is profitable, not accidental.

• Scarcity is the precondition for mass compliance.

Scarcity is the operating system of extractive capitalism. Without it, the system loses leverage, obedience, and control.

Vince Scafaria: Narrative Scarcity and Culture‑War Myths

Scafaria shows how scarcity myths, especially those deployed in culture‑war narratives, are used to manipulate the public. Scarcity becomes a psychological weapon:

• “They are taking what’s yours.”

• “There isn’t enough for everyone.”

• “You must defend your identity.”

This is identity‑protective cognition weaponized.

Danielle Allen: Civic Scarcity and Democratic Breakdown

Allen’s work on democratic equality shows how scarcity (economic, social, and civic), erodes the foundations of democracy. When people lack:

• economic security

• civic belonging

• shared agency

• epistemic stability

…they become vulnerable to authoritarian drift.

Together, these three thinkers form a triad:

• Srnicek diagnoses economic scarcity.

• Scafaria diagnoses narrative scarcity.

• Allen diagnoses civic scarcity.

All three point to the same conclusion: Extractive systems depend on scarcity. Regenerative systems depend on abundance; the kind that emerges from holistic planning grounded in planetarity, subsidiarity, and regenerative capitalism organized around drainage basins and scaled outward. (1)

IV. Extractive Dramaturgy in the Contemporary United States

This brings us to the present moment. Many analysts have noted that the Trump presidency uses spectacle, grievance, identity fragmentation, and manufactured scarcity to create a political environment that resembles Bartertown more than a functioning democracy. From my perspective, the Trump era is not simply mismanagement: It is an active form of extractive dramaturgy well established in the bad fake reality teevee industry.

It’s time to go to confession, Mark Burnett.

Bad fake reality teevee is using:

• fear

• division

• identity capture

• institutional erosion

• and reality‑TV theatrics

…to create a sense of crisis and dependency. It redirected national wealth and weakened democratic institutions. It created a closed information loop. It turned governance into spectacle.

This is the same logic as Aunty Entity’s Bartertown and the Ludovico Technique: control through scarcity, fear, and performance.

Note: The reference to A Clockwork Orange and the irony of USA being shaken down by an orange, dirty diaper wearing nepo-fascist mafia extortionist is not lost on the majority of Americans who do not identify as death cult followers.

V. The Regenerative Alternative: Civic Ecological Regeneration (CER)

If extractive systems run on scarcity, regenerative systems run on abundance and self‑reliance within a framework of social responsibility, not material excess,but the right, balanced scale of material necessities and civic abundance:

• abundance of relationship

• abundance of meaning

• abundance of agency

• abundance of shared knowledge

• abundance of civic belonging

This is the foundation of Civic Ecological Regeneration (CER).

CER is:

• slow

• relational

• basin‑based

• ecological

• distributed

• resilient

It is the civic equivalent of the mycorrhizal network; the underground “wood‑wide web” Paul Stamets describes. It is a system where communities share information, support one another, and build resilience through interconnectedness.

CER is the opposite of extractive capitalism. It is the antidote to scarcity.

VI. Port Dorchester: A Regenerative Model for a Coastal Community

Port Dorchester is my attempt to translate CER into a practical framework for a real place; a coastal neighborhood facing sea‑level rise, intensified storms, and massive infrastructure expansion. It is a curated distillation of old and new ideas, working models, and ecological principles that can help communities reclaim agency, rebuild trust, and create systems resilient enough to withstand both environmental and political storms.

Port Dorchester is:

• a civic biome

• a basin‑based governance model

• a regenerative economic framework

• a cultural narrative

• a community‑rooted identity

It is the opposite of Bartertown. It is the opposite of the Ludovico Technique. It is the opposite of extractive dramaturgy.

It is a regenerative story; the kind the children tell at the end of Thunderdome.

VII. The Cultural Turn: Why Art Matters

If extractive systems use dramaturgy to maintain control, regenerative systems must use culture to break the spell. Artists, educators, and public intellectuals are the “aerosolized antihistamines” that neutralize the allergen of manufactured scarcity.

Voices like:

• Bruce Springsteen

• Heather Cox Richardson (especially her “250 to 250” project)

• Bette Midler

• Stephen Colbert

…help puncture the dramaturgy of fear and spectacle. They create openings for people: especially newly disillusioned former Trump–Vance supporters ,to reassess what they are seeing and experiencing. Understanding the abuse imposed on them is the first step in turning anger into constructive and powerful self-motivated participation in the counter-revolution.

Culture is not decoration. It can be medicinal for the vascular system and cognitive sovereignty of democratic renewal.

VIII. The Call to Action: Boycott as Civic Jiu‑Jitsu

If extractive systems depend on scarcity, then one of the most powerful democratic tools available is strategic and sustained, peaceful boycott. Boycotts redirect economic power away from monopolized colonizing oligarchs and toward regenerative grassroots and regional alternatives. They are a form of civic jiu‑jitsu; using the system’s own mass and momentum to create openings for constructive and sustainable change.

The goal is not to punish people who were swept into a manipulative system. The goal is to restore cognitive sovereignty, rebuild civic agency, and create the conditions for CER to take root.

IX. Conclusion: The Children at the End of Thunderdome

Both A Clockwork Orange and Beyond Thunderdome end with the same message: extractive systems collapse, and regeneration begins with a new emotionally attractive story.

The children at the end of Thunderdome tell the story of how they escaped Bartertown. They build a new community. They begin again.

That is the work before us.

Civic Ecological Regeration is a new story to share and help bring into reality. Port Dorchester is one possible chapter. The regenerative future must be written into our civic DNA, and ultimately into our amended constitution if we are to prevent cyclical recurrance of the fascist mafia hijacking that is in progress now.

We must write it together.

The United States reached its peak combination of industrial output and broadly shared prosperity between 1947 and 1973, with the high‑water mark around 1965–1968. This was the era when industrial production, union density, wages, productivity, and wealth distribution were most aligned in favor of the broadest slice of Americans. When Nixon took office in 1968, we had already been lied into Vietnam by the same class of industrial oligarchs who have since morphed into today’s toxic stew of Dark Enlightenment tech bros, petrochemical barons, and monopolized capital — the forces that paved the way for a mentally unstable Donald Trump to wreak havoc on the world. “Ha ha ha, boy, ain’t we having fun now, fellers!”

Justice Lewis Powell’s 1971 blueprint for restoring a new Gilded Age for just the “best” people has brought us to this moment, funded by fascist‑mafia‑state oligopolists. They can be boycotted into oblivion. We can do better than let these creeps steal our national wealth and wreck the world so they can hide in their sheltered “network states.”

Port Dorchester XVII described the work of repair; the slow, coordinated, intergenerational labor of restoring a damaged basin. But repair alone is not enough. A community that understands the truth of its harm must also design the structures that prevent that harm from recurring and use best practices to strengthen democracy and the basis of our economic system; from extractive capitalism to regenerative capitalism. This next step is not theoretical. It is practical, grounded in the lived experience of Dorchester Bay and the civic traditions of Massachusetts. Port Dorchester XVIII offers a civic ecological recommendation: a framework for basin scale stewardship rooted in subsidiarity, local knowledge, and the shared responsibility to protect the commons.

This is not a new idea. It is the continuation of a lineage that stretches from the earliest Indigenous governance of the Massachusett and Neponset peoples, through the maritime exchanges of the 16th century, into the Enlightenment debates that shaped James Otis’s arguments for inherent rights, and onward to the Minutemen’s local readiness and the Transcendentalist insight that self reliance is inseparable from social responsibility. Organizing for environmental and social justice in the context of regenerative economics, around the geography of geological drainage basins, is the modern expression of that inheritance.

1. The Basin as a Civic Unit

Dorchester Bay is not simply a geographic feature. It is a civic unit — a living system whose health determines the well being of the communities around it, and vice versa. The basin’s boundaries are ecological, not political. Water does not respect precinct lines, departmental jurisdictions, or budget categories. The basin is the map. We need to use the ethos and frameworks of Planetarity and Subsidiarity to plan the work and work the plan.

In the 1830s, President Andrew Jackson defied the Supreme Court’s ruling in Worcester v. Georgia, refusing to enforce the Court’s protection of Cherokee sovereignty. [3] That defiance cleared the way for the forced removal of Native peoples from their homelands — a policy Jackson championed and set in motion. [4] The Trail of Tears that followed under his successor was not an accident. It was the predictable result of a president who believed legal limits did not apply to him and who acted without restraint or empathy. [5] It’s something governors and legislatures in MAGA aligned states want to ban from public school curriculums. [6]

Jackson’s legacy is a stark reminder of what happens when a president’s impulses override the rule of law. The consequences were catastrophic for ordinary families — and they reshaped the nation’s trajectory for generations. [7]

Andrew Johnson: When Power Is Used to Dismantle Democracy

Three decades later, after Lincoln’s assassination, President Andrew Johnson used presidential power in a different but equally destructive way. The parallels to today are not limited to mass- psychological. They are behavioral and structural:

• Jackson: impulsive, vengeful, defiant of legal limits

• Johnson: reckless, destabilizing, destructive to constitutional order

• Trump: impulsive decisions, disregard for legal constraints, escalation of conflict, personal grievance driving national policy [11]

This is the pattern we must recognize:

Unchecked presidential power + impulsive decision making = existential danger to ordinary people and the earth. Eisenhower warned us about the dangers of unchecked military power. [12] Kennedy reminded us that citizenship means asking what we can do for our country. [13] Those warnings were meant for moments exactly like this.

The Polling That Shows Americans Are Waking Up

While pundits argue over national horse race numbers, the most consequential polling of 2025–2026 has gone almost unnoticed because oligarh owned mainstream media hides it. In a polarized country, 1 in 10 defectors in this short a time span, from a former president’s coalition is enormous. It is historically rare. [22] And it is politically decisive in the constitutional sense. These are the only voters Republican members of Congress still fear losing. They are the only voices that can shake the majority of Republican and small % of Democratic congresspeople to correct their failure to defend the constitution. There already is well greater than 3.5% of Americans who can force a reckoning. [16] It’s past time we organize and activate our power, working together to defend and reform democracy.

The shift in ranks of former Trump-Vance voters is not ideological. It is moral and civic. They are responding to the same pattern that defined Jackson’s and Johnson’s most destructive decisions: a president who treats restraint as weakness and legal limits as inconveniences. [17]

Why Disillusioned Conservatives Are the Key

This is why the movement among former Trump–Vance voters matters so profoundly. Their awakening is not a betrayal. It is an act of patriotism. It is the modern expression of Eisenhower’s warning and Kennedy’s call to service. [18] It is the recognition that whatever our politics, none of us wants a president who can start wars on impulse. That’s not conservative. That’s not American. It’s dangerous, fascist mafia state aggression. [19]

And here’s the truth:

The people with the most power to stop this are the conservatives who once trusted him. [20]

If lifelong conservatives say “enough,” Republicans in Congress will have to listen. Their voices could be the difference between catastrophe and course correction. [21]

This moment is not about left or right. It is about preventing harm as medical professionals like Dr. Gardner and Dr. Bandy X. Lee have been doing, and restoring leadership worthy of the country we all love. It is about learning from our own history — from Jackson’s defiance to Johnson’s sabotage — and refusing to repeat the mistake of letting one man’s impulses override the rule of law. [22]
The question now is whether we will act.

It’s sober observation & analysis of tragic but real criminal capture of our government, being run as a mad cap mystery / bad fake reality TV show. Regarding Mr. Bruce’s question, “what if this US President continues to repetitively betray his oath of office by acting outside the law” and bizzaro, new nobility BS, my take is the following: It is psych-war conditioning that maintains capture of oligopolist’s essentially needed % of population, congress, & SCOTUS to fulfill their aims of destroying democracy in the USA, to start. If our democracy fails it may precipitate more rapid accpetance among peope in our traditional allies to slack off and turn away from the ethos of The enlightenment era and democracy as we know it.

It seems democracy defending states, if they intend to sustain sovereignty must organize and use RICO statutes against the rogue Trump & affiliated fascist mafia state hegemonic regime. Build cases that will fail in the corrupt system but establish essential historic record. The Trump crime family & their funders are setting up our economy to crash and wreak more environmental damage on the commons. For reference on my suggestion to file legal cases that will be shot down by our corrupted judicial system, Christopher Armitage has a current essay in Substack that addresses the how and why radical so-called conservatives have unconstitutionally subverted and distorted the meaning of our founding documents. The so-called conserveative majority on SCOTUS have given Republican presidencies expanded range of power that is clearly not allowed in the constitution. Reference this sentence about 1/2 through the article: “The doctrine o’ (Unitary Executive Theory) functions as a replacement for the Constitution rather than an interpretation of it, offered by a political movement that could not amend the document through Article V and decided to install its preferred version through judicial appointments instead.’

Chris’s esssay is an excellent and timely supplement to Mr. Adolphs points. Imo, it backs up my point that despite the recklessness of Republican unconstitutional aggression, we still have the due dilligence requirement of forcing their illegality into the historic, public record.
