#1 Clippy Mics

Starting this week, I will be traveling a lot.

And one thing, that I always bring with me when I travel, is a recording kit to capture sounds of that new place.

I do that to remind myself of these places in the future.
Kinda like an auditive photography to store a memory.

The recording kit cannot be very large in size though.
So I assembled a kit that is both small, but simultaneously also sounds good.

Here you can see what the setup consits of.

#2 Ordinary Abundance

This website / essay definitely lets you deeply appreciate all the things and objects you have in your house.

It’s and ode to inventors and people who break the boundaries.

Definitely worth a visit.

#3 Snarky Puppy

Snarky Puppy is still one of my favourite music groups.

And this song in particular gives me goosebumps every time i listen to it.

#1 Stéphane Pigeon

Lately i’ve really the works of sound designer and field recordist Stéphane Pigeon.

He has a site called MyNoise where he shares his field recordings as customizable and adjustable soundscapes.

One that I found particularly interesting and soothing to listen to is:
In Utero

Sounds, that a fetus hears during his time in the womb.
A sound we all heared a long time ago.

#2 Isolated Sounds

Beyerdynamic sent me their new DT 275 Pro On-Ear monitoring headphone to test for my usecases such as field recording and music production.

It’s a headphone that seals really well against outside sounds.

You can watch me test and make my conclusion in this video.

#3 Sirenes

Watched The Odyssey the other day and the soundtrack really moved me.

Ludwig Göransson’s work is great as always, and the following song really stuck with me. It carries a lot of emotions in the movie and i walked out of the cinema with this song in my head.

#1 Follow your taste (and do a lot of work)

Such a banger video I have totally missed out until now.

It’s basically a short masterclass for anyone who is (or wants) to follow a creative pursuit.

The key takeaways:

1. You already have taste - and know what’s good and what’s not.

2. So at the beginning, you’ll notice that your work is not the way it should be.

3. Only by repetition and doing more work your craft becomes better.

#2 Some make mistakes (and I did all of them)

A benefit of doing loads of repetitions, is that you will eventually rule out all mistakes that you are making in the process.

The following video sheds light on 15 of them in the world of field recording.

My favourite one:
Mistake #11 - Confusing Vision with hearing

Happens to me all the time.
I see a beautiful view and think: “Oh here I want to record!”

But the sounds are not interesting at all.

The small hidden things that look boring - are often the things that sound best.

#3 From the start till the very end

The repetitions only really help, when you also finish them.

Thats one reason i challenged myself to produce one track every week for a whole year in 2024.

To go through the whole process every week, has taught me a lot about the one thing I struggled with the most.

Calling something done.

That last bit - the finishing something - is what allows you to start your next itteration.

#1 How I Remix

Remixing a track is something I REALLY enjoy.

The canvas is still empty at the start -
yet the colours have already been chosen.

This gives me a direction already from the start.

The challenge remains to keep the original visible through my interpretation.
Not sure if I fully managed to do that on “Suspiro” though.

But still, i felt inspired to give it the twist it now has.
A bit of adventure and freedom.

#2 Field Recording → Music

The Zoom H5 is like the Swiss Army knife for field recording.

It was my first field recorder I bought over 10 years ago - and I still use it to this day.

So I made a video - a homage of sorts, to honour this little fella.
By turning the sounds around me into music.

Ps: You might hear some field recordings in “Suspiro” as well.

#3 The Most Satisfying Chord

I always hunt for new chord progressions that move me.

An important part of why I love to compose.

This video puts it together very beautifully.

#1 My Ableton Extensions

Last newsletter I already talked about Ableton new Extension function, that lets you programm parts of the software yourself.

Since then, I built three small tools with the help of Claude Code that I now use in my creative sampling workflow for field recordings.

The tools are:

A Poly WAV Splitter
A Transient Sample Slicer
A Batch Exporter

Together, they let me import multichannel field recordings, chop them into samples, and export everything in one go — all inside Ableton.

These tools solve actual problems I had in my workflow. Before, I often had to jump between different DAWs or do it manually. Now I can keep the whole process inside Ableton. You can download them now for free.

#2 Ultrasonic Coffee

This guy invented a new method to brew coffee.

Instead of boiling water, this method uses Ultrasonic Sound Waves, which reduces the amount of energy needed to make coffee by 75%.

Pretty interesting stuff — and it combines two of my muses: sound and coffee.

#3 Abdullah Ibrahim

This last bit is in remembrance of Abdullah Ibrahim.

Abdullah Ibrahim was a South African jazz pianist and composer.

He passed away on June 15th 2026 at the age of 91.

His music is very important to me and I want to share a piece of him with you that always moves me when i listen to it.

I had the pleasure to see him play live 2020 in Geneva, at that time already a very old man who climbed on stage with his walking stick. But as soon as he started to play he was like a young man again.

He filled the room with his music and it was beautiful.

Very thankfull for this experience.

#1 The BAROm1

How does atmospheric pressure actually sound like?
Well, the following microphone actually tries to capture that!

Even though we cannot hear these very low frequencies, the inventor of the BAROm1, Yasushi Utsunomiya, wanted to do exactly that - record and perserve those low frequenices down to 0.1 Hz.

I got in touch with Elias from Sounding Story, and he was kind enough to write a few sentences that i can include in this newsletter. Thank you Elias!

”I came across a very few limited amount of recordings online which i found particularly immersive, present, and detailed. I noticed these recordings were made with a very unique, never before seen to my eyes, style of microphone: The BAROm1.
A pressure-type microphone that responds to changes in atmospheric pressure — all the way down to 0.1Hz. I quickly discovered the mastermind behind this beautiful microphone, Yasushi Utsunomiya, and was able to get in contact with him to try one out.
From the little i know about him, Yasushi has vast experience in music theory, music production, and sound technology. He was very humble and willing to send me one, and this was the result.”

#2 Radio Waves

And now lets go into the oposite direction…

Instead of very slow waves, this guy build a very immersive lamp that visualizes WIFI and Bluetooth waves that are around us at all time.

A very moving and artistic engineering video.

#3 SONOSAX

Had the pleasure to go recording with a swiss made pocked sized preamp which let’s you record in very high quality to your smartphone.

There aren’t many audio equipment manufacturers in switzerland, and I was happy they reached out and I got the chance to test this delicate product.

#1 Ultrasonic Birds

Have you ever heard birds chirping, but REALLY pitched down?

It sounds absolutely fascinating.
And with the help of ultrasonic microphones, this is possible.

Ben Jordan did a whole video about this topic and I learned a lot and it inspired me to dive deeper into ultrasonic recording.

What a huge hidden world is out there that we humans are unable to percieve!

#2 Visual Vibrations

Sounds are basically vibrations traveling through our world.

If they hit an object, the object starts to vibrate.

And if you film those movements, you can re-create the sound that was there in the first place.

Love the idea.

#3 Contact Sounds

Another way to capture hidden sounds is with a contact microphone.

Got quite a few very surprising sounds on my last recording session and turned it into a full video.

Including the whole transformation process inside of Ableton.

My first single release of the year is out now everywhere.

#2 Spring Reverbs

I’ve recently fell in love with the sound of spring reverbs.

A spring reverb is a little audio device. (see image)

On the top of the device are metal springs attached, through which the audio signal starts to vibrate. This creates a very unique and distinct sound - you might have heard it on some surf rock or dub reggae tunes.

I also used a spring reverb emulation on the guitar in my new song ‘Wasteland’.
In particular I used the Primavera by Pulsar.

(I’m not getting paid to share this. I share it because i truly love the sound of this plugin.)

#3 The Flexaton

If you played GTA San Andreas, you’ll know the reference.

Otherwise you just learned about a new instrument.

Today I want to do a very short recap of the year 2025.
I picked and reviewed three of my favorite projects.

#1 100 Strangers → 1 Choir

I don’t approach strangers on the streets that often.

But for this video I did, and it was SO worth it.

This video is important to me because I believe with my whole hearth, that most of the people on this planet, are good people.

Behind every stranger, there’s a story.

#2 Real Choir!

Next to my 100 people choir I conducted, I also had the chance to compose for a real choir this year.

The process of writing, the recording in the studio with all those singers and the post-production of the song was an intense experience that taught me many things and I am proud of what we all achieved together!

Last but not least I created and released my first full sample pack this year.

It was a great process, I learned a lot during the creation of it and I now use it regularly for my own productions.

Ableton Live is the software that I am using for music production.

And so it was very fascinating for me to read a bit more about two of the founders of Ableton in a rare interview with Gerhard Behles and Robert Henke.

When they first met, they didn’t like each other so much…

Robert Henke:
”To paint a totally cliche picture, I was at that time the kind of totally lost goth punk person. And Gerhard pretty much looked the same as he did now...

*laughter*

... nice white scarf and a very stable demeanor. Like the type of people I hated at school.”

#2 Robert Henke

I was even more pleased to find a podcast with Robert Henke where he talks about the beginnings of Ableton. (Don’t know why it only has 475 views!)

He also explains why he created a whole album without compression (very refreshing) and how he created one of the most influencial synths in Ableton Live - Operator.

His blog is also a great read.

#3 Ableton Live 12.3

Just a few days ago Ableton released their new 12.3 update for Live.

It has now it’s own Stem Separation engine and other very great features that i love.

I made a full review talking about the new features and how I will be using them in my workflow.
