year, when children return to classrooms and families settle back into familiar routines. Perhaps it is the return to work after vacations and slower summer days. For businesses, it can feel like the beginning of a new season, a time to revisit goals, rethink priorities, and consider what comes next.

September has always felt like a beginning to me.

This year, I have been thinking a lot about the idea of success. Not simply how we achieve it, but how we define it. More specifically, I have been thinking about what happens when we look at success through a Disability Lens.

For much of American history, success has been deeply connected to the idea of the individual. We celebrate the person who works harder than everyone else, overcomes every obstacle, and makes something of themselves without relying on anyone else. The self-made person is one of our most powerful cultural stories.

But disability complicates that story.

The lived experience of disability has never fit particularly well within the mythology of rugged individualism. Disability can make something visible that many of us would rather not acknowledge. Human beings need other human beings.

As someone who has lived with a disability my entire life, I have had to learn this lesson personally.

Asking for help has not always been easy for me. Accepting help has sometimes been even harder. There is something deeply ingrained in many of us that says needing assistance means we are somehow less capable.

Over time, however, I have come to understand that asking for help is not a sign that we have failed.

Sometimes it is a sign that we understand what growth requires.

That is why a recent New York Times guest essay by Angela Duckworth, a professor at the Wharton School and the author of Grit, caught my attention. Her essay, titled “I Study Successful People. They Have One Habit in Common,” challenges one of our most familiar assumptions about achievement.

The habit she identifies is asking for help.

Duckworth describes an experience in which she and her mother were caught in the ocean and needed assistance. Her instinct, like the instinct many of us have, was to try to solve the problem herself. Eventually she recognized that her own efforts were not enough and called for help. Other people brought knowledge and capabilities that she did not possess.

The lesson is simple, but profound.

Sometimes success begins with recognizing that we cannot do something alone.

That idea resonates deeply with the lived experience of disability.

Disability often requires us to navigate a world that was not necessarily designed with us in mind. We learn to ask questions. We learn to find another way. We learn to accept assistance. We learn that sometimes the person beside us sees something we cannot see or can do something we cannot do.

I have come to prefer the word collaboration to interdependence.

Interdependence describes the reality that we need one another. Collaboration describes what we can create because we need one another.

That distinction matters.

It matters in our personal lives, but it matters enormously in business.

Think about the workplace. How often do we reward the person who always has the answer? How often do we equate confidence with competence? How often do we admire the leader who appears to have everything under control?

Now consider what might happen if we valued something else.

What if a leader saying, “I need help,” was understood as an expression of self awareness?

What if an employee asking for an accommodation was not viewed simply as a request to be managed, but as information that could help an organization design work differently?

What if bringing a different perspective into a conversation was seen not as a disruption, but as an opportunity?

This is where the Disability Lens becomes much bigger than disability.

It challenges our assumptions about what a capable person looks like.

It challenges our assumptions about how work should be done.

It challenges our assumptions about leadership.

And ultimately, it challenges our definition of success.

For too long, we have often associated success with independence. The person who needs nothing from anyone is considered strong. The person who figures everything out alone is considered exceptional.

But perhaps we have misunderstood the equation.

Perhaps the most successful people are not those who need the least help.

Perhaps they are the people who understand when they need help, know where to find it and are willing to accept it.

That is a very different definition of strength.

It is also a very different definition of leadership.

The Disability Lens asks us to relinquish assumptions and bias and become curious about possibility. Instead of asking whether someone can fit into the way things have always been done, we can ask what might become possible if we approached the problem differently.

That question is incredibly powerful in business.

Innovation often begins when someone challenges an assumption.

Leadership often grows when someone admits they do not have all the answers.

And progress often happens when different people bring different experiences into the same room.

This is why I believe disability has something important to teach the business world about success.

Not because people with disabilities have some special ability to overcome adversity. That is another stereotype we should be careful about.

It is because disability can make the reality of human connection impossible to ignore.

None of us succeeds entirely alone.

We may tell ourselves that we do. We may build stories around individual achievement. We may celebrate the entrepreneur, executive, athlete or student who appears to have done it all independently.

But behind almost every meaningful accomplishment is a network of people, relationships, knowledge, opportunity and support.

The question for this new season is whether we are willing to acknowledge that reality.

As summer ends and another work year begins, perhaps success deserves a new definition.

Success is not simply about accomplishing more.

It is not about proving that we need no one.

It is about understanding ourselves well enough to recognize what we bring to the table, what we do not know, when we need help and who can help us see what comes next.

Perhaps the future belongs not to those who can do everything themselves, but to those who know how to bring the right people together.

That is not dependence.

That is collaboration.

And perhaps collaboration is one of the most powerful forms of success we have yet to fully appreciate.

A New Season. A Broader Definition of Success.

At J Kaufman Consulting, I work with leaders and organizations that are ready to challenge conventional assumptions about leadership, disability, innovation, and human potential.

Through Executive Coaching, Speaking, and Strategic Advisory, I help leaders see possibility differently, develop more inclusive and innovative approaches to leadership, and recognize how collaboration can become a source of organizational strength.

Because the question is not simply, “How do we succeed?”

The better question may be:

“What becomes possible when we stop believing we have to succeed alone?”

Capital’s Uncharted Opportunity:

y2="14"></line>

As summer begins to wind down, I have been thinking about change.

Not simply the change that comes with a new season, but the larger shifts taking place around us in business, demographics, technology, and the way we understand human potential.

One of the areas I believe deserves far more attention is the emerging Disability and Longevity Economy, particularly the role capital will play in determining which ideas become companies, which companies become markets, and ultimately, which innovations become part of everyday life.

There is already a meaningful community of investors and accelerators working in this space. Enable Ventures, for example, has built an investment thesis around disability as an economic asset and focuses on early stage companies using universal design to create products and services with broader market potential. Samaritan Partners has developed a public benefit venture fund focused on early stage companies serving the disability sector while pursuing sustainable financial returns. Its portfolio reaches across accessibility, employment, financial services, mobility, travel, and technology.

Remarkable has built one of the more comprehensive global ecosystems in Disability Tech, providing training, capital, networks, and accelerator programs for companies working across disability, aging, and health.

This is important progress.

But I do not think it is nearly enough.

The opportunity is too large, and the implications are too important, to remain primarily within a specialized investment ecosystem.

We need to bring the larger capital markets into the conversation.

That means private equity. Venture capital. Family offices. Corporate venture groups. Incubators. Growth equity. Institutional investors.

And I think there is an important shift in perspective that needs to happen.

The question should not simply be, “How big is the disability market?”

The better question is, “What happens when we design for disability and discover that we have designed something better for everyone?”

That distinction changes the investment thesis.

Consider a product initially created to address mobility, communication, vision, cognitive accessibility, or aging in place.

It can be tempting to categorize that innovation as serving a niche population.

But what if the underlying human problem is much larger?

A product that makes something easier for a person with a disability may also make it easier for an older adult, a parent, a traveler, an employee, an athlete recovering from an injury, or simply someone navigating a different stage of life.

The disability community can be the starting point for innovation without being the limit of the market.

That is the power of universal design.

And this is where capital needs to become more thoughtful about its own assumptions.

Investors are trained to recognize patterns. Pattern recognition is essential to evaluating businesses. But it can also create blind spots when the next opportunity does not resemble the opportunities that came before it.

Malcolm Gladwell’s work in Blink helped popularize the idea that we often make rapid judgments before we consciously understand why we are making them.

In investing, that instinct can be powerful.

It can also be limiting.

If an investor sees a founder with a disability and unconsciously categorizes the company as a “disability company,” the market may already have been narrowed before the business model has even been fully understood.

If an investor sees an aging population primarily through the lens of healthcare and decline, they may miss the much larger opportunity around longevity, independence, consumer behavior, housing, technology, financial services, travel, work, and quality of life.

And if an investor sees accessibility as compliance rather than innovation, an enormous part of the value proposition may disappear.

This is not an argument for lowering investment standards.

Quite the opposite.

It is an argument for becoming better investors.

The business case needs to be rigorous. The market needs to be real. The economics need to work. The path to scale needs to be credible.

But the lens through which those questions are asked also matters.

The Consumer Technology Association and CES have played an important role in expanding that lens. CES has become a place where accessibility, AgeTech, AI, robotics, health technology, and consumer innovation increasingly intersect. That visibility helps demonstrate that disability and aging are not isolated categories. They are part of the larger innovation economy.

The next step is to move that conversation into the investment committee.

Look at firms such as Blackstone and KKR. These organizations understand technology, healthcare, growth, infrastructure, consumer markets, and operational transformation at extraordinary scale.

The opportunity is not necessarily to create another specialized disability fund inside every major financial institution.

It is to develop greater fluency.

To recognize disability and longevity as dimensions of virtually every major investment thesis.

Technology is a disability issue.

Healthcare is a disability issue.

The future of work is a disability issue.

Consumer products are a disability issue.

Housing is a disability issue.

Artificial intelligence is a disability issue.

And increasingly, longevity is a business issue that touches all of them.

That is why I think the Disability and Longevity Economy should be viewed less as a sector and more as a lens.

A lens through which we can see unmet demand, overlooked consumers, new forms of design, new business models, and new sources of human capital.

The specialized investors are helping build the foundation. Enable Ventures, Samaritan Partners, Remarkable and others are demonstrating that capital can pursue both financial performance and meaningful economic inclusion.

Now the ecosystem needs to grow.

More founders need access to capital.

More investors need exposure to founders with lived experience.

More family offices need to see disability and longevity as investable themes.

More incubators need to incorporate inclusive design into how they identify opportunity.

And traditional private equity and venture capital need to look beyond the familiar.

Because some of the most important companies of the next decade may not initially look like the companies investors are accustomed to funding.

They may look smaller.

They may appear more specialized.

They may emerge from communities historically positioned as consumers rather than creators.

But within those companies may be solutions capable of reaching millions of people.

That is the opportunity I see.

Not simply funding the Disability and Longevity Economy.

Expanding our understanding of what the economy itself can become.

The future belongs to organizations willing to see possibility before it becomes obvious.

And perhaps the greatest investment opportunity is not simply discovering the next big market.

It is learning to recognize the markets that have been in front of us all along.

A Conversation Worth Having

At J Kaufman Consulting, I spend much of my time thinking about the intersections of business, disability, longevity, innovation, leadership, and human potential.

If these questions are becoming part of your organization’s strategic conversation, I would be glad to continue the dialogue.

The Leadership Lens Session 3

The Premium Monthly Audio Series brought To You By J Kaufman Consulting

Jonathan J. do: make decisions, manage people, solve problems, execute strategy.

But what if leadership also depends on how we think about the work itself?

That is the focus of Session 3 of The Leadership Lens: Cognitive Job Crafting and Leadership.

Cognitive job crafting is the process of changing how we mentally frame our work without necessarily changing the work itself.

A leader who thinks, “I spend my day putting out fires,” may approach the role reactively.

A leader who thinks, “I identify patterns, remove barriers, and create the conditions for others to succeed,” approaches that same work strategically.

The tasks may be similar.

The leadership is not.

This distinction matters because leaders are not simply task managers. They are meaning-makers. The way we interpret our responsibilities influences how we allocate our attention, where we invest our energy, and how we create value for the organization.

In this session, I explore how cognitive job crafting can help leaders:

Move from task execution toward strategic leverage

Reframe challenges without falling into “positive thinking”

Strengthen engagement by connecting work to purpose

Identify where their time is creating—or limiting—organizational value

Think differently about what leadership actually requires

And I include three practical exercises designed to help you examine your own leadership role and identify where a cognitive shift could create greater impact.

The Leadership Lens

The Leadership Lens is my premium monthly audio series for executives, founders, professionals, and emerging leaders who want to think more deeply about leadership, human potential, organizational culture, and the changing world of work.

This isn’t leadership theory for theory’s sake.

It’s designed to give you a different way of seeing the challenges you’re already facing, and practical ways to act on them.

Annual premium membership is $99.

If you’re ready to look at leadership through a broader lens, I’d love to have you join me.

Jonathan J. continuing to explore the question that has been at the center of this column: What does the growing Disability and Longevity Economy mean for business?

The global Disability and Longevity Economy is now estimated at roughly $60 trillion and continues to expand. Its growth is being shaped by forces that few industries can afford to overlook. People are living longer. Disability is increasingly understood across the lifespan. Technology is changing what is possible. Work is being redefined. Consumer expectations are evolving. And the boundaries between healthcare, technology, financial services, housing, work and everyday life are becoming increasingly blurred.

The size of the opportunity is significant.

But as we enter Q4 and look toward the year ahead, I want to move beyond the headline number and begin exploring what comes next.

Where are the markets developing? Which industries are being reshaped? Where is investment likely to follow? What are founders building? And where are established companies still overlooking opportunities because they continue to think about disability and aging through traditional categories?

One idea will increasingly guide this exploration: disability and aging are design challenges.

That framing changes the business conversation.

Rather than asking how a company can accommodate a particular population, we can ask how products, services, workplaces, technologies and environments might be designed around the reality of human variation from the beginning.

That is a very different proposition.

For years, many of our systems have been designed around an assumed average consumer, worker or customer. Yet there is no truly average human experience. People move through different stages of ability, health, work, caregiving, and longevity throughout their lives.

That creates both complexity and opportunity.

Technology will be one of the first areas I explore more deeply. Assistive technology remains an important and growing market, but the opportunity extends into artificial intelligence, robotics, wearables, voice interfaces, smart environments, digital accessibility, and increasingly intelligent products. AI raises particularly interesting questions about how technology might become more responsive to individual needs rather than requiring individuals to continually adapt to technology.

The future of work presents another significant frontier.

Longer careers, aging workforces, disability inclusion, caregiving and changing expectations around flexibility are forcing organizations to reconsider how work itself is structured. Job crafting, workplace technology, talent development and leadership are increasingly interconnected. For business leaders, this is not simply an inclusion issue. It is a question of talent, productivity, retention and organizational resilience.

Healthcare and longevity will remain central as well. Home-based care, digital health, rehabilitation, prevention, chronic condition management and caregiving all point toward a broader transformation in how we think about health over the course of a longer life.

Financial services offer another important area of exploration.

Longer lives change the assumptions behind retirement, wealth management, insurance, estate planning, and intergenerational wealth. For private equity firms, venture capital investors and family offices, the question is not simply how aging affects existing markets. It is where changing demographics may create entirely new categories of demand.

Housing and the built environment offer another compelling example. Smart homes, adaptable housing, universal design, transportation and community development are becoming increasingly important as people seek greater independence throughout longer lives. The home of the future may need to adapt to its occupants rather than requiring its occupants to adapt to it.

Travel and hospitality will also be worth watching. Airports, hotels, cruise lines and tourism companies are beginning to recognize that accessibility is not merely a compliance requirement. It is part of customer experience, market reach and potentially competitive differentiation.

Retail and consumer products offer another window into this evolution. Adaptive clothing and fashion are obvious examples, but the broader opportunity extends into beauty, food, automobiles, entertainment, recreation and everyday consumer products. Designing for people whose needs have historically been overlooked can lead to products that are ultimately more intuitive and useful for everyone.

And beyond these sectors are insurance, mobility, robotics, real estate, education, fitness, wellness, home services and caregiving.

What interests me most, however, is not simply what happens within each industry.

It is what happens between them.

The Disability and Longevity Economy is not a single market. It is a constellation of markets connected by demographic change, technology and changing human expectations. A development in AI can influence healthcare. Healthcare can influence housing. Housing can influence financial planning. Caregiving can influence employment. Longer working lives can influence wealth management. Accessibility can influence consumer experience.

These intersections are where I believe some of the most interesting opportunities will emerge.

And this is where the ideas explored in Through A Broader Lens: Insights connect directly to my work through J Kaufman Consulting.

This is the work of J Kaufman Consulting: helping leaders, founders and investors translate emerging shifts across disability, longevity and innovation into strategy, leadership and action. If these questions intersect with your organization, I welcome the conversation.

That applied perspective will increasingly inform this column in the year ahead.

I will be exploring the markets, technologies, investment themes and business models emerging across the Disability and Longevity Economy, while also asking the harder questions: What should leaders be paying attention to? What assumptions need to change? Where is the opportunity being underestimated? And how can organizations move from recognizing a trend to designing for what comes next?

Because the opportunity is no longer simply about creating solutions for disability or aging.

It is about understanding how disability, longevity and human variation are reshaping the economy itself.

That is where I will be looking in Q4 and throughout 2027.

The Economy We Haven’t Learned to See Yet

Through A Broader Lens: Insights Companion Podcast Curated By J Kaufman Consulting

Jonathan J. down. Fall brings the calendar back into focus. Meetings return, budgets tighten, strategy conversations become more urgent, and companies begin looking beyond the current quarter toward what comes next.

For investors, it is a useful moment to step back and look beyond the headlines.

The headline tells us what happened. The trend line tells us where things are going.

And one trend line deserves considerably more attention: the convergence of disability and longevity.

For years, we have tended to talk about longevity as a demographic issue and disability as a healthcare, accessibility, or social issue. That framing misses the larger business story. Longer lives are changing how people work, consume, invest, live, travel, use technology, and participate in the economy. Disability is part of that same story.

As people live longer, the likelihood that they will experience some form of disability or changing physical, sensory, or cognitive capability also increases. This is not a marginal phenomenon. It is becoming a defining characteristic of the consumer and workforce markets businesses are trying to understand.

The economic scale is enormous. The broader Disability and Longevity Economy has been estimated at roughly $60 trillion globally. In the United States, AARP estimates that Americans age 50 and older generated $12.5 trillion in economic activity in 2024, representing 43% of U.S. GDP.

Those numbers should change the conversation.

The question for investors is no longer simply how companies will serve an aging population. It is how companies will create value for people living longer, working differently, and navigating changing needs throughout their lives.

That opportunity reaches far beyond healthcare.

Consider housing. Aging in place will create demand for homes and technologies designed around independence rather than institutional care.

Consider financial services. Longer lives change how people save, invest, insure themselves, plan for retirement, and manage wealth.

Consider consumer products. A product designed to be easier to open, navigate, wear, see, hear, or use may begin with accessibility but ultimately reach a much larger market.

Consider transportation, travel, technology, and artificial intelligence. The companies that understand changing human capability may discover markets that traditional demographic segmentation overlooks.

This is why investors should stop thinking about accessibility solely through the lens of compliance.

Accessibility can be a product-development strategy.

When companies design for people with different abilities, they are forced to confront friction. What makes a product difficult to use? Where does a customer drop off? What assumptions has the company built into its design? Who has been unintentionally excluded?

Those questions can lead to better products for everyone.

Some of the most interesting companies in the Disability and Longevity Economy may never identify themselves as disability companies. They may simply be solving problems created by a changing population.

That distinction matters for capital allocation.

Investors often look for the next category. But sometimes the better opportunity is found at the intersection of categories.

Disability intersects with longevity. Longevity intersects with technology. Technology intersects with workforce participation. Workforce participation intersects with productivity.

Follow those lines far enough and the investment thesis becomes considerably larger.

The workforce may be one of the most important places to watch.

The old model of work assumed a relatively predictable sequence: education, career, retirement. Longer lives are disrupting that sequence. People are working later, changing careers later, starting businesses later, caring for family members while remaining employed, and navigating different capabilities throughout their careers.

Companies that can adapt to this reality may have an advantage in talent retention and productivity.

That means investors should be asking different questions when they evaluate a business.

Can the company retain experienced workers? Can it redesign jobs as technology changes? Can it accommodate changing employee needs without lowering expectations for performance? Can technology help more people remain productive?

Artificial intelligence makes those questions even more interesting.

The AI conversation has understandably focused on automation, efficiency, and job displacement. But there is another opportunity hiding underneath it: participation.

AI could potentially help people with disabilities work more independently. It could make information easier to navigate. It could reduce administrative friction. It could allow experienced workers to remain productive longer.

If technology can expand the number of people able to participate fully in the economy, the economic value extends well beyond the technology itself.

That is the trend line investors should be watching.

Not disability as a niche.

Not aging as a cost.

Participation as growth.

The companies positioned to benefit may be found across financial services, real estate, healthcare, consumer products, insurance, transportation, travel, technology, AI, and workforce platforms.

The common denominator is not an industry.

It is a changing human reality.

As summer comes to an end and businesses begin thinking seriously about 2027, investors have an opportunity to look at their portfolios through a different lens.

Look at the customer. Look at the product. Look at the workforce. Look at the technology. Look at accessibility.

Then ask one deceptively simple question:

Are we investing in companies designed for the population that exists today, or for the population the economy is becoming?

That question may reveal more than another list of emerging sectors.

The biggest opportunities rarely announce themselves all at once. They build through demographic change, consumer behavior, technology, labor markets, and shifts in capital.

Those are the trend lines.

And when they begin converging, investors should pay attention.

Summer is ending. A new business season is beginning.

The question is whether we are prepared to see what is already changing.

The Disability Discount: What Investors May Be Missing

Through A Broader Lens: Insights Companion Podcast Curated By J Kaufman Consulting

Jonathan J. rarely obvious. If they were obvious, markets would have already recognized their potential and priced them accordingly. Throughout business history, some of the greatest returns have come from places where conventional wisdom was incomplete, where assumptions became so familiar that they were rarely questioned.

This leads to an important question that has stayed with me following Disability Pride Month.

Why do so many founders building companies connected to disability innovation continue to struggle raising capital from venture capital firms, private equity investors, and family offices?

The common explanation is that disability represents a niche market.

But perhaps the deeper question is whether investors are accurately seeing the opportunity in front of them.

Behavioral economics has fundamentally changed how we understand decision making. Traditional economic theory often assumes that people make rational choices based on available information. Behavioral economics tells us something more complicated and more human. Even highly sophisticated decision makers rely on mental shortcuts, previous experiences, emotional responses, and unconscious assumptions when evaluating uncertainty.

Investing is one of the clearest examples of this reality.

Investors spend their careers developing pattern recognition. They learn what successful founders look like, what scalable companies look like, and what industries appear positioned for growth. This expertise is valuable. It allows investors to identify opportunities quickly.

But there is also a risk.

We can only recognize patterns we have learned to see.

Malcolm Gladwell explored a similar concept in Blink, examining how people often make rapid judgments based on limited information. These immediate impressions are not always wrong. In many situations, intuition reflects years of experience and expertise. However, those same instincts can also reinforce assumptions that have never been fully examined.

For investors, the question becomes whether their first impression reflects genuine insight or simply familiarity.

When a founder with a disability enters an investment conversation, or when a company is focused initially on solving disability related challenges, investors may unconsciously begin evaluating the opportunity through a narrower lens. They may focus first on the size of the disability population rather than the size of the human problem being solved.

This is where what I call the Disability Discount emerges.

The Disability Discount is the tendency for markets to undervalue companies because disability becomes the primary frame through which investors evaluate opportunity.

It is not necessarily intentional.

It is psychological.

It happens when investors confuse the original users of a product with the ultimate size of the market.

A company developing adaptive technology may be viewed as serving only people with disabilities. But what if that company is actually addressing larger human needs related to independence, mobility, communication, aging, productivity, or quality of life?

The investment thesis changes dramatically when the question changes.

Instead of asking, “How many disabled people need this product?”

Investors should ask, “What universal human challenge has this company identified better than anyone else?”

History repeatedly demonstrates why this distinction matters.

Many technologies that began by addressing disability related needs eventually became products used by everyone. Closed captioning supports people who are deaf or hard of hearing, but it is also used by millions of people watching videos in airports, offices, and homes. Voice recognition technology has helped people with disabilities communicate and interact with technology, but it has become a standard feature across consumer devices. Accessibility features frequently become mainstream innovations because they improve experiences for all users.

The lesson is not that disability innovation eventually becomes something else.

The lesson is that disability innovation often reveals something universal about being human.

Another behavioral economics concept helps explain why investors may continue overlooking these opportunities: the availability heuristic. People tend to judge probability based on examples that easily come to mind. Investors can quickly identify successful software companies, healthcare companies, and consumer brands. But when asked to identify major disability led companies that have achieved significant scale, many struggle.

The absence of familiar examples can create the impression that extraordinary outcomes are unlikely.

But sometimes a lack of examples does not indicate a lack of opportunity.

Sometimes it indicates a lack of investment.

This creates a self reinforcing cycle. Limited capital leads to fewer visible success stories. Fewer visible success stories reinforce the belief that the market is limited. Those assumptions then influence future investment decisions.

Over time, perception begins shaping reality.

The challenge is that disability is often viewed as a category rather than a lens into the future.

Yet disability intersects with some of the largest economic shifts taking place today. Aging populations, longer life expectancy, healthcare transformation, artificial intelligence, workforce changes, and evolving consumer expectations are increasing demand for products and services built around accessibility, adaptability, and human centered design.

What appears to be a niche opportunity may actually represent one of the most significant market transitions of the coming decades.

For venture capital firms, private equity investors, and family offices, the opportunity is not simply to invest differently.

It is to think differently.

The first step is recognizing that the size of a market should not be defined only by who uses a product today, but by the broader problem the company solves tomorrow. Many category defining companies begin by serving overlooked communities before expanding into much larger markets.

The second step is becoming more intentional about understanding cognitive biases in investment decisions. Investment committees should ask whether concerns about a company are based on financial evidence or whether they are influenced by unfamiliarity. Recognizing concepts such as framing, confirmation bias, and representativeness can lead to better decisions.

The third step is expanding where investors look for opportunities. Traditional networks often reproduce traditional outcomes. Building relationships with disability entrepreneurs, innovation hubs, universities, and founder communities can reveal companies that may never enter conventional deal flow.

The fourth step is recognizing lived experience as a competitive advantage. Founders who personally understand complex challenges often possess insights that traditional market research cannot replicate.

Finally, investors should view disability innovation within the larger context of demographic and economic change. Accessibility, longevity, healthcare, and inclusive design are not temporary trends. They represent fundamental shifts in how people will live, work, and interact with the world.

The greatest investors have always understood that opportunity often exists before consensus.

Behavioral economics reminds us that even experienced decision makers are influenced by how they frame problems and interpret uncertainty. Business strategy reminds us that overlooked markets can create extraordinary value.

Perhaps the Disability Discount exists not because the opportunity is too small.

Perhaps it exists because we have been measuring the opportunity through too narrow a lens.

The investors who recognize this shift early may discover that disability innovation is not simply a conversation about inclusion.

It is a conversation about where the future of business is heading.

Thirty-Six Years Later: Why the Americans with Disabilities Act Matters to Every Business Leader

Through A Broader Lens: Insights Companion Podcast Curated By J Kaufman Consulting

Jonathan J.
