I moved my hand. The pendulum moved with it. I never touched it. Three other people were watching. What happened next forced me to reconsider where consciousness ends and the physical world begins.

Even now, I do not know exactly what transpired.

I have experienced many anomalous and non-ordinary phenomena throughout my life, but I have never considered myself to possess any special psychic or paranormal abilities. Nor have I been particularly interested in proving their existence. My intellectual temperament tends in another direction: I am less interested in prematurely categorizing extraordinary experiences than in understanding what they might disclose about the relationship between consciousness and reality.

But occasionally, an experience strains the very frameworks through which we ordinarily make sense of reality.

The incident I am about to describe was one of them.

A Room Without Wind

It happened during a San Pedro retreat. Three other participants and I were gathered in a hermetically sealed room specifically designed for silent meditation and intensive inner work. It was winter, with the doors and windows shut tight, leaving no discernible stray drafts or other obvious physical disturbances.

As the plant medicine reached its peak, my perception became exquisitely sharp. I began seeing what appeared to be energetic phenomena around several objects in the room: luminous fields, subtle textures, and shifting contours of light. None of this was entirely unprecedented for me. Psychedelic states can radically transform perception, and I had encountered comparable phenomena before.

Then, my attention settled on a quartz pendulum suspended from the ceiling.

Around the stone, I perceived a multicolored aura extending a few inches into the surrounding space. Driven by an inexplicably strong impulse to interact with it, I reached toward the pendulum.

But I stopped short of touching the stone.

Instead, I hovered my fingers approximately two inches from its physical surface and gently clasped what appeared to me as its aura. Then, I slowly pulled that luminous field to one side.

The Motion

The pendulum moved.

Not randomly, or so it appeared. It followed my hand in striking synchrony, swinging in the same direction and at approximately the same speed as my gesture.

Before I could dismiss this as a trick of my mind, one of the other participants suddenly broke the silence.

“Look—it’s moving!”

I froze. My first response was not excitement but analytical skepticism.

I tried it again.

I moved my fingers in another direction. The pendulum instantly followed.

I changed the angle. Again, it followed.

I repeated the gesture several times while desperately searching for some mundane explanation. Was there an air current I had somehow failed to notice? Had I inadvertently vibrated the ceiling hook? Was my body movement disturbing the air enough to drag the pendulum along?

No obvious explanation presented itself at the time.

More importantly, I was not the only witness to the pendulum’s movement. The three other participants watched the sequence unfold and later described a similar sense of astonishment.

Was It Telekinesis?

The obvious word came immediately to mind: telekinesis.

But the more I reflected on the experience, the less satisfactory that description felt.

Telekinesis normally refers to the purported movement of physical objects through mental intention alone. Yet I had not been concentrating on the pendulum or actively attempting to move it with my mind. During that first gesture, I had no conscious expectation that the pendulum would move whatsoever.

Phenomenologically, something entirely different seemed to be happening.

I was interacting with what appeared to be an energetic field surrounding the physical object—and the object seemed to respond to my manipulation of that field.

I eventually found myself entertaining a new term: energy-kinesis.

I use the expression tentatively. It does not name an established scientific or even paranormal phenomenon, nor do I intend it as a definitive explanation. It simply describes the experience more accurately than telekinesis. Here, embodied consciousness appeared to interact with an energetic medium that, in turn, appeared capable of influencing physical matter.

The distinction matters.

Because the most crucial question may not be whether the mind can somehow push matter around at a distance. The deeper question concerns whether the boundaries we ordinarily draw between consciousness, energy, and matter are as impermeable as we assume.

The Trap of the Binary

When confronted with experiences like this, modern culture often pushes us toward two ready-made stories.

The first says: It was subjective. You were under the influence of a psychedelic and hallucinated the entire thing.

The second says: It was objectively real. You perceived an invisible energetic reality and physically influenced it.

Choose your metaphysics.

I find both responses premature.

Certainly, psychedelic states can generate extraordinary perceptual phenomena. Memory is fallible. Expectation sculpts experience. Human beings are exceptionally talented at finding meaningful patterns where none exist. Any serious inquiry into anomalous events must take these possibilities seriously.

But simply invoking hallucination does not explain what happened either—particularly when an experience appears to involve observable physical consequences witnessed by several people.

The honest answer is perhaps less satisfying, but far more interesting:

I don’t know.

Perhaps the experience reflected some unusual but ultimately ordinary physical process that escaped our notice. Perhaps it involved an anomalous psychophysical interaction. Perhaps we participated in some form of collectively reinforced, shared perceptual construction. Perhaps there are dimensions of energetic causation that our prevailing scientific models do not yet adequately describe.

Or perhaps the categories through which we are asking the question are themselves part of the problem.

Beyond the Cartesian Divide

This is precisely where the participatory approach to consciousness becomes useful.

For several centuries, Western thought has trained us to view perception through a deceptively simple model. There is an objective world “out there,” a subjective mind “in here,” and our task is to determine whether the mind accurately represents what exists independently of it.

But what if experience refuses to conform to this neat division?

Contemporary embodied and enactive approaches to cognition increasingly emphasize that organisms do not simply passively absorb a pre-given world. Perception emerges through a dynamic interaction between the nervous system, body, environment, history, expectation, attention, and action.

The participatory perspective pushes this insight further.

It asks us to consider whether some extraordinary states of consciousness might disclose—or actively help bring forth—phenomena and dimensions of reality that defy classification as either purely objective or merely subjective.

This does not mean that whatever we experience becomes ontologically real simply because we experience it. That would simply mistake individual experience into metaphysical truth.

It means something more modest, yet far more radical: reality and experience may co-create each other through participation, in ways more complex—and perhaps more mysterious—than our current scientific models allow us to grasp.

A More Responsive Cosmos?

The pendulum episode was not an isolated incident. During other psychedelic encounters, I have perceived energetic fields that seemed to respond to touch and movement in ways that felt strikingly interactive. At times, two or more of us interacted with these fields in synchrony and reported seeing the same responsive movements.

Taken together, these experiences have left me wondering whether the relationship between the experiential, energetic, and material dimensions of reality is more continuous than our conventional categories allow.

I emphasize that word: wondering.

I do not know whether the energetic fields I perceived existed independently of consciousness. I do not know whether our interactions with them somehow participated in their apparent responsiveness—or, in the case of the pendulum, its physical movement. I do not know whether these phenomena involved some combination of perception and participation, or some third possibility that our present conceptual vocabulary cannot yet capture.

And perhaps that uncertainty is not a failure.

Perhaps one of the mistakes we repeatedly make when confronting anomalous experiences is demanding metaphysical certainty too quickly.

The skeptic knows it was a hallucination.
The believer knows it was a paranormal phenomenon.
Both have closed the door.

A participatory approach asks us to keep it open.

It allows us to investigate extraordinary phenomena without collapsing them prematurely into either naïve supernaturalism or reductionistic dismissal. It asks us to remain rigorous about what we know, precise about what we experienced, and genuinely curious about what remains unexplained.

The pendulum moved.

I perceived myself interacting with something surrounding it.

Three other people saw it move.

Beyond those three statements, certainty becomes progressively more difficult.

But sometimes the edges of knowledge are precisely where wonder becomes philosophically fertile.

Experiences like these do not require us to abandon science or critical thinking. Perhaps they invite us to practice them more radically—to resist confusing our present maps with the full territory of what is possible.

And perhaps the deepest implication is not that human beings possess some hidden paranormal power.

It may be something infinitely stranger—yet not necessarily incompatible with the possible existence of such capacities.

The world itself may be more participatory, more continuous, and more responsive than we have yet learned to imagine.

Every scientific revolution begins in much the same way.

An anomaly appears.

At first, it is dismissed. Then ridiculed. Then carefully explained away.

Only much later—sometimes decades or centuries later—does something remarkable begin to happen. The anomaly itself may not have changed at all. What changes is the collective architecture through which society decides what counts as reality.

Whether Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) ultimately prove to be advanced terrestrial technologies, extraterrestrial visitors, interdimensional phenomena, or something entirely different remains an open question. Yet regardless of their eventual explanation, they are already teaching us something profound about how consensual reality evolves.

While we naturally ask what UAPs ultimately are, the phenomenon itself poses a different question: What do these anomalies—and their increasingly undeniable reality—reveal about the nature of knowledge itself?

The Anatomy of an Anomaly

Our evolving cultural and institutional response to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) provides a striking contemporary case study of how reality itself becomes socially stabilized. In previous decades, these phenomena were more commonly termed UFOs, or Unidentified Flying Objects.

For decades, within both the scientific establishment and mainstream discourse, reports of UAPs were comfortably categorized using familiar dismissive frameworks. Although a small but growing number of researchers—including Garry Nolan, Avi Loeb, and several multidisciplinary scientific initiatives—have argued that these phenomena deserve careful investigation, reports of UAPs were long relegated to optical illusions, misidentified atmospheric phenomena, wishful thinking, or the perceptual or psychological errors of individual witnesses. The boundaries of consensual reality remained largely intact because the anomalies were successfully confined within the unreliability of the individual psyche.

In recent years, however, the geopolitical and technological geometry of this consensus has undergone a notable disruption.

The official release of military sensor data, radar telemetry, cockpit videos, and related documentation by the Pentagon and other defense-related agencies has introduced a different tier of evidence into the public domain. Millions of people have now watched officially released military footage documenting objects whose reported behavior—including instantaneous acceleration, trans-medium movement, and other anomalous flight characteristics—continues to be investigated and, in a significant number of cases, remains unexplained. Several scientists studying these incidents have noted that, if the reported performance characteristics are accurate, they would be difficult to reconcile with our current understanding of propulsion, aerodynamics, and, in some instances, established physical models.

The significance of this shift is epistemological before it is ontological. This is because the reality status of an anomaly is inextricably bound to the scale and institutional stabilization of its consensus. Nothing in this shift establishes the ontological nature of the reported phenomena. While intelligence agencies have reportedly long taken these anomalies seriously behind closed doors, what has changed is something prior: the standards governing what is now officially considered worthy of serious public investigation.

Whether these phenomena will ultimately receive a satisfactory explanation remains entirely unsettled. Their true origin—be it terrestrial, non-human, interdimensional, or something else altogether—is still unknown. Definitive conclusions regarding who or what is behind them are, at this stage, premature. They must await hard physical evidence—such as anomalous artifacts or biological materials—subjected to rigorous, transparent, and fully independent peer-reviewed scientific analysis.

Yet even in the absence of an explanatory origin story, the cultural lesson is already profound. A phenomenon once declared impossible and exiled to the furthest margins of respectable discourse is gradually being integrated into institutional reality.

Even before the ontological question is resolved, their epistemological significance is already becoming clear. It is not simply our empirical data that have changed—reports of these anomalies have existed for generations—but also our mechanisms of social validation. The UAP enigma demonstrates that when the architecture of consensus expands to include military instrumentation and credible witnesses, the dominant worldview is forced to widen its perceptual bandwidth. What was once dismissed as an “impossible delusion” consequently becomes an unexplained but increasingly accepted phenomenon.

When the Anomaly Became Personal

Moving from these macro-level architectures of institutional consensus to the raw immediacy of lived experience introduces an entirely different register of challenge—one that brings us directly to the catalytic crucible of nonordinary states of consciousness.

For most of my life, I had little sustained interest in UAPs. Like many people, I found the subject mildly intriguing but never central to either my scholarly work or my personal life. My intuition was simply that, in a universe containing well over two trillion galaxies and hundreds of billions of trillions of planets that may have formed over cosmic history, it would be surprising if sentient intelligence had arisen only once. After all, the basic chemical ingredients from which life eventually emerged—including hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen—have been present since the earliest epochs of cosmic evolution. Beyond that broad cosmological intuition, however, I devoted little attention to the subject.

That changed unexpectedly during an ayahuasca retreat in the Amazonian rainforest.

Years after the healing encounter with the “astral doctors” described in my forthcoming book The Participatory Way, another anomalous experience unfolded that permanently broadened the range of possibilities I was willing to entertain. Although I was vaguely aware that UFO-like imagery appears in some of Pablo Amaringo’s visionary paintings reproduced in Luis Eduardo Luna’s Ayahuasca Visions, I entered the ceremony with absolutely no expectation of encountering anything remotely similar.

At the height of the experience, while my eyes remained open, an oval, metallic-looking craft materialized inside the ceremonial maloca. Its surface was perfectly smooth and seamless, without visible windows, engines, rivets, or any recognizable means of propulsion.

Moments later, a rectangular opening appeared in its side. A ramp slowly extended to the earthen floor, and several seemingly non-human entities began to descend into the ceremonial space. They appeared slender and elongated, with large oval heads and broadly humanoid form, though I retain few detailed memories of their anatomy.

What remains most vivid is not their appearance but my own response: a surge of excitement at the possibility of genuine contact.

Before any interaction could unfold, however, a powerful wave of nausea overtook me and I purged intensely. When I recovered sufficiently to look again, both the craft and its occupants had disappeared.

At the time, I wondered whether the purge had interrupted my visionary perception or whether, quite simply, I was not yet prepared for whatever encounter might otherwise have taken place. I also found myself wondering whether, even though I could no longer perceive them, these beings might somehow still have been interacting with—or perhaps even assisting—other participants in the ceremony.

Needless to say, such reflections remain entirely speculative.

The Lasting Lesson

The lasting significance of this experience was not that it convinced me of the existence of extraterrestrial or interdimensional beings. Rather, it permanently expanded the range of possibilities I could responsibly entertain.

In particular, it made me more open to the hypothesis that at least some reported encounters with non-human intelligences may involve dimensions of reality not ordinarily accessible to everyday waking consciousness. Importantly, this possibility does not exclude a physical extraterrestrial origin. If advanced civilizations exist elsewhere in the cosmos, what appears “interdimensional” from our perspective could simply reflect technologies—or modes of travel—that transcend our current scientific understanding.

From a participatory perspective, experiences of this kind also invite us to consider a more radically plural ontology—one in which conscious agencies may inhabit dimensions or bandwidths of reality ordinarily unavailable to waking awareness. Whether such encounters disclose autonomous realities, emerge through participatory co-creation, or involve some combination of both defies definitive resolution. What they do reveal is the possibility of a cosmos alive with forms of intelligence beyond the narrow bandwidth of ordinary perception.

In my own case, I remain genuinely uncertain about what occurred. Its enduring value, however, lies not in providing an answer but in transforming the questions I was prepared to ask. It reminded me that the deepest obligation of both science and spirituality is not to defend yesterday’s certainties, but to remain genuinely available to whatever reality may yet disclose. That stance of intellectual openness, I believe, is precisely what the unfolding UAP question requires.

To confront the UAP enigma is to prepare ourselves for the possibility that we may not be alone, and that reality itself may prove far more intricate, densely inhabited, and astonishing than our present consensus paradigms have thus far dared to imagine.

Beyond Certainty

Ultimately, the true significance of the unfolding UAP question may have surprisingly little to do with what UAPs ultimately prove to be. This is not to minimize the extraordinary implications that any eventual explanation might carry. If these phenomena ultimately prove to reflect previously unknown terrestrial technologies, evidence of non-human intelligence, or capabilities that radically expand our understanding of physics, such a discovery would rank among the most consequential in human history. Indeed, if these entities possess an independent, objective reality, they would fundamentally shatter the anthropocentric assumption that humanity occupies a privileged place as the sole—or at least the highest—intelligence on Earth, or perhaps even in the cosmos more broadly.

But regardless of how this mystery is ultimately resolved, it has already begun transforming something equally important: our understanding of how knowledge itself evolves. Persistent anomalies remind us that scientific and cultural worldviews evolve not only through the accumulation of new facts, but also through the expansion of the conceptual frameworks that render those facts intelligible. Long before a phenomenon is fully explained, it can expose the hidden assumptions through which a civilization defines what counts as real, possible, or worthy of serious investigation.

This, in turn, points toward the broader contribution of a participatory perspective. It does not ask us to abandon skepticism in favor of belief, nor to replace scientific rigor with metaphysical speculation. Rather, it invites an even more disciplined form of epistemic humility: the willingness to distinguish what we know, what we do not know, and what we do not yet know how to investigate.

The greatest obstacle to discovery is rarely mystery itself. More often, it is our premature conviction that we already know the boundaries of the possible. If that humility is sustained, reality itself may prove far stranger, more creative, and more participatory than we have ever imagined.

“One has to cross out that old word ‘observer’ and put in its place the new word ‘participator’. In some strange sense the universe is a participatory universe.”

In the midst of our busy lives and endless cultural noise, we easily forget that we are hurtling at over 1.3 million miles per hour on a minuscule but miraculous planet—racing through a vast, ever-expanding cosmos whose origins, limits, and future remain profoundly unknowable. Rarer still is the realization that we are not separate onlookers peering into this dark expanse. We are participatory expressions of this mysterious unfolding—a universe that has somehow become capable of knowing itself from within.

A sense of awe and vital curiosity permeates every page of this book, accompanied by a commitment to an undefended form of love in the face of existential uncertainty. As the opening epigraph of this book suggests, our shared ignorance does not have to lead to nihilism, cynicism, or narcissism. Instead, it can lead to a radical softening of the heart. It is precisely this vulnerable condition we all share that can foster a deep kinship not only among human beings, but with all life.

Yet when we turn our gaze from the luminous horizon of the cosmos back to the immediate realities of our collective life, we find a radically different picture. The human soul is currently caught in a metaphysical crossfire. For centuries, our civilization has been shaped by competing visions of reality: is the universe an accidental byproduct of dead matter, the projection of an absolute mind, or something even more enigmatic? This tension does not remain confined to philosophy departments; it secretly shapes how we love, how we heal, how we build culture, and how we experience ourselves.

When we look closely at the modern landscape, the fractures of this divide appear everywhere. They shape a medical system that treats the body as a biological machine to be optimized. At the other extreme, many spiritual subcultures regard both the body and the physical world as ultimately illusory or inferior realities to be transcended. They condition our approach to psychedelics, which oscillates between corporate medicalization and reductive New Age universalism. They appear even in our most intimate spheres—our relationships and our understanding of gender—where we struggle to reconcile enduring archetypal patterns with the complexities of lived experience.

This book offers a way through this cultural and philosophical impasse. It is neither a new dogma nor another metaphysical system, but a different way of inhabiting the world. It invites you into the Participatory Way.

As you navigate the chapters ahead, you will notice a recurring pattern: the consistent dismantling of rigid binaries. Whether we are examining materialism and idealism, autonomous individuality and participatory belonging, the mystical summit and the spiritual forest, or monogamy and polyamory, the same integrative impulse is at work. This repetition is deliberate. The modern mind has been conditioned to force existence into these stark either/or extremes. By repeatedly exposing the limits of these false dichotomies across different domains of life—from the nature of consciousness to the intimacy of the bedroom—we begin to recognize a deeper coherence. The habit of polarizing experience may itself be one of modernity’s structural flaws. Our task in this book is not to resolve particular debates. It is to retrain perception itself, learning to inhabit a participatory “third way” that breathes between and beyond the extremes.

To walk this path, we first need to become familiar with three foundational concepts: metaphysics, ontology, and epistemology. Although often regarded as abstract philosophical ideas, they are directly relevant to the questions explored throughout this book.

· Metaphysics is the broad branch of philosophy concerned with the fundamental structure and nature of reality. It asks what the universe is ultimately like, how it is constituted, and how its physical and nonphysical dimensions may relate, interact, or interweave.

· Ontology is a central branch of metaphysics, focusing more specifically on what exists. It asks: What kinds of things are fundamentally real? Are minds, values, mathematical entities, and perhaps even the subtle realms described in contemplative and shamanic traditions ultimately reducible to the physical world, or do they possess a reality of their own? In short, ontology explores the different modes and categories of being.

· Epistemology is the branch of philosophy concerned with knowledge. It asks: How do we come to know what is real? It examines the lenses through which we perceive reality and the methods by which we evaluate our beliefs and knowledge claims.

In the dominant modern worldview, ontology and epistemology are treated as strictly separate. The prevailing assumption is that there exists an objective reality “out there”—one that exists independently of us. Ontology asks what that reality consists of. Meanwhile, our task is thought to be simply to observe that reality as accurately as possible through the telescope of our minds—the domain of epistemology. The participatory perspective begins by questioning this separation, asking whether being and knowing may be more deeply intertwined than we have long assumed.

More specifically, a participatory vision suggests that the world is neither a collection of inert objects nor a purely subjective construction. Instead, consciousness and world participate in a living process of mutual co-creation. Our ways of knowing help shape the realities that come to be disclosed. The cosmos thus appears less as a finished structure than as an ongoing process of participatory becoming. That process includes human cognition, the wider community of life, and perhaps even more-than-human dimensions of the cosmos, such as nature’s diverse intelligences, possible subtle realms, or forms of being we have yet to imagine. When we engage the world through this lens, spiritual practice is transformed from a ladder of ascent into an ecology of arrival. Psychedelic experience shifts from either chemical optimization or abstract mystical universalism toward an open-ended dialogue with a living, multifaceted reality. And our relationships move beyond the binary of traditional versus alternative, emerging as laboratories of mutual becoming.

The architecture of this book is not accidental. It is organized as a balanced four-by-four lattice: four parts, each containing exactly four chapters. In Jungian psychology, the quaternity symbolizes the integration of disparate elements into a more balanced whole. A trinity moves; a quaternary stands, establishes a field, and inhabits space. The exploration is anchored in four foundational pillars: Consciousness, Psychedelics, Embodiment, and Culture. Together, the sixteen chapters form an archetypal grid that invites us to step away from a fragmented, linear view of existence and enter into an unbroken, multidimensional circle of inquiry. The geometry of the book is designed to hold the very integration it champions.

The chapters are designed to be self-contained and may be read independently. Even so, the book has an intended inner architecture. Parts I (Consciousness), II (Psychedelics), and III (Embodiment) form sequential arcs. Later chapters build upon earlier ones, progressively developing and applying the participatory vision across increasingly diverse domains of human experience. Part IV, by contrast, is more exploratory and non-linear in its internal organization, inviting readers to enter its chapters in any order. Readers are therefore encouraged to follow each part sequentially where possible, while remaining free to navigate the book as a whole as a field of exploration.

At their core, all of the chapters point in the same direction: away from the impulse to hack, control, or escape our lives, and toward arriving more fully within them. This orientation should not be mistaken for a closed metaphysical doctrine. It is offered as a generative hypothesis—an evolving cartography of experience. I used to believe teachers were supposed to be miles ahead of everyone else.

More disciplined. More integrated. Less confused.

Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed the same silent rule: never let people see the part of you that is still struggling.

Whether you are a university lecturer, a psychotherapist, a coach, or a retreat leader, the pressure is often the same: appear certain, composed, evolved. If your work involves guiding people through the messy terrain of the human condition, this reflection is for you.

For me, the shift away from that silent rule happened in my late twenties. Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to receive this teaching at such an early, formative age, before the habits of professional mastery could fully harden. Deep in the waters of Buddhist practice in California, Roshi Joan Halifax said a single sentence that shifted my internal compass forever.

“Jorge,” she told me, “we teach what we need.”

I do not remember the specific question I asked Joan that afternoon, but I remember the weight of the silence before she spoke. And the feeling of recognition that followed—as if a sudden draft had cleared a smoke-filled room. As if someone had finally named the secret engine beneath almost every authentic form of teaching.

Her words have stayed with me since that day.

The End of the Guru Mask

Impostor syndrome thrives wherever people confuse teaching with perfection.

We assume that to guide others, we must first become flawless ourselves. So we hide our contradictions. We curate wisdom. We perform certainty.

We learn to wear what I have come to think of as the “guru mask.”

But the teachers who have helped me most were never performing invulnerability. They were simply a few—or many—steps deeper into the same terrain. They remembered the valleys because they still carried traces of them.

Knowing our shadows and unresolved anxieties does not make us frauds.

It makes us human.

And often, it is precisely that humanity that allows others to trust us.

Roshi’s maxim invites us to flip the script: if we teach what we need, then teaching stops being an act of subtle superiority and becomes an act of shared exploration. It frees us from the pedestal.

I have found that my work on the integration of sexuality and spirituality, for instance, is rooted precisely in the blocks I navigated in my own youth. My workshops on embodied spirituality were born partly from the necessity of learning how to inhabit and ground my own highly mental nature. And my writings about intimacy and relationships do not emerge from mastery (far from it), but from an ongoing engagement with the questions themselves.

Some teachings emerge less from arrival than from this kind of active wrestling with what we have not yet fully integrated. I am not teaching from a place of completion, but from the front lines of my own evolution.

Perhaps this is why impostor syndrome is so common among sincere teachers: they are acutely aware of the distance between what they teach and what they have fully embodied. But teaching is not invalidated by incompletion. Often, it is animated by it.

You are not a fake for teaching what you have not fully “solved.”

You are a guide because you are still willing to learn alongside those you lead.

A Brief Lineage of Reluctant Messiahs

The idea itself is ancient. Seneca wrote that “while we teach, we learn.”

Centuries later, Richard Bach gave the insight its modern spiritual phrasing in Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah:

“We teach best what we most need to learn.”

In the book, the protagonist discovers a “Messiah’s Handbook” suggesting that we are drawn to certain teachings not because we have mastered them, but because we are being shaped by them.

Even George Bernard Shaw’s cynical jab—“He who can, does; he who cannot, teaches”—accidentally reveals something true. Teaching is often the domain of people still navigating the fires of becoming.

Perhaps this is why we trust people who have survived something.

Not because they are perfect.

But because they are real.

Why Vulnerability Scales

When we speak honestly about our struggles, people feel it immediately.

Not because suffering itself is wisdom, but because lived experience creates a different kind of authority. You cannot truly map a territory you have never walked. Knowing the valleys of a subject allows you to guide others through them with genuine discernment and compassion.

When you are honest about your past and present struggles, your teaching becomes “real” in a way that academic or psychospiritual “perfection” can never replicate.

But an important distinction must be made: vulnerability is not confession for its own sake—nor is it a performance of false modesty. There is a critical distinction between an open wound and a healed scar. Effective teachers do not bleed their unprocessed trauma onto their students; instead, they teach from the scars that prove survival and integration are possible.

And something else happens too: when we teach a lesson—forgiveness, embodiment, courage—we reinforce it within ourselves. Teaching becomes less a performance of expertise and more a form of ongoing practice.

People can feel the difference between wisdom and performance.

Performance creates distance.

The wisdom of vulnerability gives others permission to be human too.

It is the willingness to remain human while guiding others.

The Archetype of the Wounded Healer

This relationship between teaching and inner need finds some of its deepest expressions in the archetype of the wounded healer. This concept suggests that a person is often drawn to the healing arts precisely because of their own deep-seated wounds.

The roots of the “wounded healer” archetype stretch back through Greek myth, shamanic initiation traditions, and ancient healing cults. But Carl Gustav Jung gave the motif its modern psychological form, arguing that the healer’s authority emerges not despite their wounds, but partly through a conscious relationship with them:

“It is his own hurt that gives the measure of his power to heal.”

In many shamanic traditions, the “call” to become a healer often begins with a “shamanic illness”—a profound personal crisis or near-death experience that the individual must navigate alone. It is not the avoidance of pain that makes the shaman powerful, but their ability to transform that pain into a map for others.

The wound becomes not just a source of suffering, but a form of apprenticeship.

The healer does not stand outside the circle of suffering. They lead from within it.

Healing becomes possible because the wound in the teacher resonates with the wound in the student, creating a bridge of recognition rather than a hierarchy of power. Here, authority emerges not from being fully “healed,” but from remaining consciously engaged in the process of transformation itself.

The healer is not someone untouched by suffering. Often, they are someone who became intimate with suffering and refused to let that intimacy turn into bitterness.

Embodying the Path

Over time, something surprising happens.

The thing we began teaching in part out of necessity slowly becomes embodied wisdom. Not perfection—never that—but a lived intimacy that opens into insights capable of helping others.

The wound becomes a doorway instead of a source of shame.

As educator Parker J. Palmer noted in The Courage to Teach, “we teach who we are.” We do not merely dispense information; we transmit our inner reality and our ongoing attempts at wholeness.

And maybe that is what real teaching actually is:

not standing above others as an expert,

but standing beside them as someone still practicing,
still failing,
still learning,
and still willing to remain open.

In a world obsessed with mastery and performance, that kind of honesty is quietly revolutionary.

The Psychedelic Renaissance Has a Delivery Problem

We know how to have the experience.
We do not know yet fully how to become it.

Heroic doses. Breakthrough journeys. Carefully curated retreats.

We have become experts at Autumn—planting powerful seeds.
And then we expect Summer—clarity, integration, a new life—to arrive almost immediately.

But in our rush to harvest results, we tend to skip the two seasons that actually grow them: Winter and Spring.

That is why integration has become the central challenge of the contemporary psychedelic movement. Not because the experiences fail to work, but because we often misunderstand the organic rhythms through which transformation unfolds.

When integration falters, the consequecnes are rarely neutral. We do not simply lose insights. More often, we encounter:

• ego inflation and spiritual bypassing
• ontological shock and pyschological destabilization
• compulsive pursuit of experiential highs

While individual predispositions certainly play a role, they do not fully explain these issues. The deeper problem lies less in the medicines themselves than in our integrative approaches.

We have been treating integration like a task to be checked off.

It is not a task.
It is a life process—one that unfolds in seasons.

Nature Already Solved This Problem

We are not detached observers standing outside natural processes.
We are participants within them.

Biomimetics—the practice of learning from living systems—has already reshaped entire industries. Architects have modeled buildings on termite mounds to regulate temperature without air conditioning. Engineers have studied birds to redesign high-speed trains, reducing noise and energy consumption while increasing speed.

What if psychedelic integration required the same humility?

Nature never rushes transformation.
It cycles it—season after season.

Integration, too, is a seasonal process. And each season invites a different aspect of our being—the body, the vital world (instinct and life-force), the heart, and the mind—to take the developmental lead.

Autumn — Prepare the Body, Plant the Seed

In nature, Autumn is the season of labor.
The soil is turned. Old roots are cleared. Seeds are planted in faith, long before any visible fruit appears.

It is the season of preparation, structure, and action.

In psychedelic work, Autumn includes both the preparation phase and the session or ceremony itself. It is the moment when the ground of the body and the wider field of one’s life are readied to receive the seed of transformation.

Integration begins before the medicine touches your lips.

Preparation is itself already a form of participation. The way we arrive shapes, in part, the world that becomes available to us.

We can support this season through:

• Somatic Grounding: Nourish the body through diet, rest, movement, and nervous system regulation.

• Environmental Alignment: Prepare your home space as a sanctuary capable of supporting your transformation when you return.

• Energetic Readiness: Reduce noise—digital, emotional, relational—so the organism can become more receptive, coherent, and available to change.

• Psychological Orientation: Hold your intentions lightly. The mind’s role is not to control the journey, but to support and then gracefully step into the background.

The ceremony itself is the act of planting—or perhaps more accurately, awakening—latent life-seeds. It can be approached as a kind of energetic conception: the activation of potentials already present within us.

As with any seed, what matters most is not the moment of planting, but the conditions that allow it to unfold over time

Autumn is decisive. But no seed becomes a tree without first passing through the hidden work of Winter.

Winter — Enter the Dark, Trust the Process

In nature, Winter appears as stillness.
Fields look barren. Growth seems absent. Yet beneath the frozen surface, unseen processes continue in silence.

It is the season of darkness, gestation, and hidden transformation.

After a powerful psychedelic experience, our modern instinct is to demand immediate understanding: We need to process this. Or we begin speaking before the experience has found its deeper place within us.

But Winter asks something different: silence before interpretation.

Not every experience must immediately become a story. Some revelations deepen precisely because they are allowed to remain wordless for a time. Shared too soon, the experience can lose its transformative depth—like a seed exposed before it has taken root.

Indigenous traditions such as the Huichol remind us that hasty articulation can dissipate—or even distort—the visionary potency of an experience. Expression before maturation risks flattening a living process that has not yet completed its work.

The seed first grows downward. Roots take shape in darkness before anything reaches toward the light. What has been activated now turns inward—deepening, reorganizing, and slowly assuming form.

We might think of this as a kind of energetic pregnancy: a period of gestation in which the medicine is no longer an external event, but a living process quietly unfolding within.

Integration in this season means learning to trust what is still becoming.

We can support this gestation through:

• Somatic Listening: Rest the hands on the belly (the vital hara), cultivating deep bodily receptivity and inward attention, much as pregnancy itself invites profound listening to the unseen growth.

• Dream and Symbolic Awareness: Attend dreams, synchronicities, and subtle imaginal movements without forcing immediate interpretation

• Receptive Stillness: Practice non-doing, deep rest, and contemplative forms of meditation.

• Contact with the Earth: Spend time in nature, attuning to the soil, roots, and stones as reminders of slow, unseen transformation.

In Winter, nothing appears to happen—yet everything is already underway.

To force clarity now is like digging up a seed to check whether it is growing. The very interruption becomes the injury, and may itself abort the process.

Winter asks for humility.
Trust life—and the unknown.

Spring — Let the Heart Bloom

In nature, Spring is a season of fragile emergence.

Tender shoots break through the soil. Blossoms appear before fruit. Everything is vibrant, vulnerable, and not yet stable.

It is the season of first expressions.

In psychedelic integration, what was gestating in darkness begins to take emotional and relational form.

A new feeling.
A shift in perception.
An unexpected tenderness.
A burst of creative insight.

Something is being born into experience.

These are the blossoms of integration. They are precious precisely because they remain unfinished.

The task is not to decide too quickly what they mean, but to discern which are passing Spring flowers and which may eventually ripen into the more enduring fruits of Summer.

We can support this blooming through:

• Heart-Centered Awareness: Rather than trying to intellectually determine your next steps, breathe into feeling and allow emotions to reveal their own intelligence.

• Creative Expression: Use nonlinear forms such as music, movement, free-flow writing, or visual art to allow the experience to begin taking tangible shape before asking it to translate into clear behavioral action.

• Erotic Intelligence: Honor eros, desire, vitality, and sexuality as primordial expressions of life-force and creative becoming.

• Relational Reflection: Share your experience within trustworthy, non-judgmental relationships capable of holding vulnerability without the pressure to prematurely define exactly what everything means.

Here, the mind becomes less an analyst than a gentle gardener.

Too much interpretation, too soon, and the bloom can collapse. This is not the season for evaluation or major life-decisions.

It is the season of curiosity, expression, and careful tending.

Not every blossom becomes fruit, yet every fruit begins as a blossom.

Summer — Harvest Meaning, Build a Life

In nature, Summer is the season of ripening.

What survived the storms, rooted itself in darkness, and bloomed in Spring now matures into fruit.

It is the season of harvest, shared abundance, and fruition.

In the integrative process, Summer is the season in which insight ripens into embodiment—when the fruits of the journey are translated into words, choices, commitments, and ways of being. What was conceived, gestated, and gradually born now seeks to find enduring expression in everyday life.

Only after the blossoms of Spring have been given the time and curiosity they need to ripen can the mind step in to discern which have matured into the more enduring fruits of Summer.

We can support the harvest through:

• Insight Articulation: Give language to what has genuinely become known—through writing, conversation, or other forms of expression.

• Translation into Action: Establish new habits, make decisions, and initiate projects that anchor transformation in lived reality.

• Offering to the World: Share what has been learned with humility and gratitude, recognizing that no transformation is ever the achievement of an isolated self.

• Celebration and Rest: Pause to inhabit the fulfillment of the journey with joy and ease, allowing the organism to rest before the next seasonal cycle begins.

Here we recognize that we have been both the gardener and the garden of a profoundly participatory process. The harvest is not simply something we produce. It is also something that has been producing us.

Like every living process, transformation unfolds through the collaboration of multiple dimensions of being: body, instinct, heart, mind, and consciousness; personal history and collective inheritance; relational worlds and wider communities; and the mysterious depths of creativity that exceed our capacity to plan or control.

This is where transformation becomes visible.
Not as insight—but as a way of life we embody.

And within every fruit, another seed is already waiting.
The cycle does not end. It only deepens.

Why We Get Stuck: A Cultural Imbalance

Modern culture is structurally imbalanced.

It rewards:

• Autumn (action)

• Summer (results)

And tends to overlook:

• Winter (gestation)

• Spring (birth)

In other words, we are trained to produce rather than to become.

In a psychedelic context, this bypass creates what produces what I have called integrative arrest: the attempt to extract lasting change before the cycle that sustains it has fully matured.

A balanced integration requires both:

• the “masculine” drive to act and build

• the “feminine” capacity to hold, gestate, and give birth

That said, there are exceptional moments when the process appears to compress.

Certain psychedelic experiences can catalyze such a complete death-and-rebirth that one appears to move directly from Autumn to Summer—embodying a new way of being almost immediately.

Even then, however, what appears to be an immediate arrival is rarely the end of the journey. It marks the beginning of a deeper phase of stabilization in lived reality. The new way of being must still become embodied in action, relationship, and time.

Without Winter and Spring, there is no sutsainable Summer.

Only the appearance of transformation before it has become fully embodied.

Small Changes, Real Transformation

Even the smallest shift matters.

A profound transformation does not need to look like a new career or identity. It can be as subtle as:

a deeper breath,
a slightly different bodily tone,
a new way of inhabiting a single moment.

Some of the greatest evolutionary innovations began with microscopic variations—like the minuscule duplication of a gene that shifted our ancestors from two-color to three-color vision.

That seemingly modest change transformed perception, enabling our ancestors to better recognize ripe fruits and detect subtle changes in facial coloration. This enriched the biological foundations of empathy, emotional attunement, and romantic love.

Transformation works the same way.

Small, repeated shifts, when sustained over time, gradually reshape our lives from within—without requiring any abrupt change in external form.

Integration Is Not Complete Until It Is lived

Not thought.
Not even felt.
Lived.

We cannot simply think our way into a new life.

Transformation is not something we extract from an experience.
It is something we gradually grow into.

And genuine growth cannot be rushed.

The problem is not that our experience was not powerful enough. It is that we attempt to convert an unfolding realization into a fixed result too quickly. Transformation does not happen at the peak. It unfolds in the seasons that follow.

So let us stop chasing the next breakthrough.

We do not need another Autumn.
We need to stay with your Winter,
nurture our Spring,
and allow our Summer to emerge organically.

The invitation is simple, but not easy:

Plant the seeds.
Trust the darkness.
Protect the bloom.
Then—only then—harvest.

This is how nature works.
This is how we work.

And when we finally stop chasing the next experience,
we may discover something quieter—and far more radical:

Our life itself has become the place of integration.

Because in the end, integration is not what we understand.
It is what we become.

An Important Note on the Roadmap

This seasonal framework is a heuristic, not a rigid sequence. Integrative processes vary widely across individuals, medicines, and contexts. The seasons may overlap, repeat, or unfold at different rhythms depending on factors such as the type of medicine, the developmental timing of the individual, and broader archetypal or contextual dynamics.

The four-season cycle is likewise not intended as a universal ecological template. Many regions of the world organize life through different climatic rhythms—such as wet and dry seasons, monsoon cycles, or other locally meaningful patterns of growth and renewal. The present model simply draws upon the temperate seasonal cycle as one particularly accessible illustration of a more general developmental principle: living systems tend to move through recurring rhythms of preparation, gestation, emergence, and fruition.

Most fundamentally, human beings are not linear systems, but self-organizing ecologies in continuous transformation. All dimensions of the human being—body, vital world, heart, and mind—remain active throughout the entire process. Accordingly, although the model reflects recurring patterns observed in both natural systems and human development, it is best understood as an orienting map—not a schedule to be followed, but a field to be attuned to. It invites to participate in the living rhythms of transformation rather than conform to fixed stages or prescribed timelines.

For decades, the culture war around relationships has forced people into a false choice: monogamy or polyamory. Pick a side. Build an identity around it. Defend it.

In my last essay, I argued that the long-running Mono-Poly Wars are finally coming to an end.

But as the smoke clears, a deeper question emerges:

If there is no single “correct” way to love… how do we choose?

If we are entering a new relational landscape, we will need orienting principles to navigate it—a framework that moves beyond the forced binary of singular devotion and plural expansion while still fully honoring the conscious choice of monogamy or polyamory.

Whether you identify as monogamous, polyamorous, ambiamorous, or something entirely unnamed, these ten signposts offer a practical compass for the modern relational terrain.

Consider this a working manifesto for relational sovereignty.*

1. There Is No “Gold Standard” of Love. Monogamy is not more “mature,” and polyamory is not more “evolved.” No relational structure is intrinsically superior—or more psychospiritually “advanced”—than another. Each is simply a different architecture through which love can take form.

2. Every Relationship Style Has a Shadow. There are higher and lower versions of every style. You can be mindfully monogamous or reactively polyamorous—or vice versa. The question is not what you are doing, but how and why: Is it life-enhancing or fear-based? Does it honor the dignity of all involved, or does it quietly exploit the emotional labor and vulnerability of those with less power? Structure alone cannot justify behavior; integrity is a practice, not a label.

3. Beware the Narcissism of “My Way Is the Only Way.” The moment you believe your way of loving is the only—or universally superior—path, a personal preference has hardened into an ideology. Genuine sovereignty never requires the devaluation of any other consensual, non-harmful path.

4. Honor Your Relational “Soul-Print.” We are born with diverse dispositions. Some of us thrive in the focused intensity of a singular bond; others need the broadee field of multiple connections; and still move fluidly between both. Pay attention to your own relational temperament rather than following any cultural script.

5. Relationships Move Through Seasons. There is no single linear path to relational fulfillment. You might need the stability of monogamy in your 30s and the expansion of non-monogamy in your 50s—or the other way around. Your biography is not a straight line; it’s an evolving landscape.

6. Your Motives Matter More Than the Structure. Are you choosing your relational style from a commitment to wholeness, freedom, and self-knowledge? Or are you compensating for unrsolved wounds, responding to external pressure, or performing a “lifestyle” that does not actually fit your heart? Structure alone cannot sanctify a relationship; motivation and intention do the deeper work.

7. Context Matters. A relationship style is only “better” insofar as it serves the specific needs for intimacy, healing, and happiness—yours and those of your partners—within the actual conditions of your lives. What works for a digital nomad in Bali may not work for a parent in the suburbs. Acknowledging that our choices are often shaped by our socioeconomic safety nets is essential to relational honesty.

8. Step Into the “Novogamy” Space. If you feel constrained by the prevalent mono-versus-poly choice, consider moving fluidly between relational styles, integrating their strenghts, or creating entirely new ways of relating that do not yet have names. This exploratory middle ground is one living laboratory of novogamy—an open space to forge a relational identity that truly nourishes your soul.

9. Relational Freedom Picks No Favorites. Cultivating Relational Freedom does not enthrone novogamy as the new orthodoxy. True sovereignty is the agency to choose your location on the relational map—whether that means dwelling in the experimental “novogamy” space or consciously embracing monogamy or polyamory. Freedom is not a doctrine; it is the growing capacity to choose without coercion, whether internal or external.

10. The Ultimate Task: Know Yourself. At the end of the day, your task is simple—but not always easy: be honest with yourself. Stay open to life’s changing invitations and live the relational form that best fits your evolving potential, while remaining deeply mindful of your impact on others and the invisible privileges you may carry into every relationship. Self-knowledge is the quiet soil from which every honest relationship grows.

For decades we have been told there are only two ways to love.

You can choose monogamy—the promise of security built around “The One.”
Or you can choose polyamory—the freedom to love “The Many.”

But for most of modern history, only one of these options was socially acceptable.

If you ever felt a deep inclination to love more than one person intimately—if you even entertained the possibility—the cultural script was clear:

Something was wrong with you.

But what if the real problem is not monogamy or polyamory?

What if the problem is the binary itself?

The Binary Problem

Human love has never been as simple as the categories we use to contain it. Yet modern relational culture increasingly pressures to take sides in what has become a strange and deeply polarized ideological conflict: the Mono-Poly Wars.

But what if this entire debate is asking the wrong question?

What if the future of love is not about choosing between The One and The Many, but about learning which relational form best enables everyone involved to flourish?

My Journey Toward Relational Freedom

Every cultural revolution begins with a question the status quo cannot comfortably answer. For me, that question arrived during a bright Mediterranean walk in Barcelona when I was barely twenty.

I was in love, yet I was struck by a sudden realization: Why should loving this extraordinary person prevent me from also loving others intimately? In a world of billions, the cultural mandate of total exclusivity seemed, to my young and searching mind—and heart—less a self-evident truth than a source of profound perplexity.

The thought startled me—not because I loved my partner any less, but because I discovered that my capacity to love seemed capable of expanding without diminishing the depth of any particular bond.

When I shared these concerns, I was told I simply had not found my “soulmate” or that I should seek psychotherapy. After years of struggling with traditional monogamy and the quiet shame of internalized polyphobia, I spent a decade living a committed polyamorous life—navigating it with as much sincerity and relational integrity as my younger self could muster.

Then the journey took an unexpected turn: three years of spontaneous celibacy—understood here in the fuller sense of brahmacharya, involving complete erotic containment—followed by another decade of serial monogamous relationships.

Eventually, I arrived at a surprising realization: the question “Are you monogamous or polyamorous?” no longer made sense to me and started to feel constraining.

I was neither—and somehow, I was both.

I found that I could inhabit either relational for without being driven by significant fear, ideological attachment, or inner conflict. Whether exclusivity or openness was appropriate seemed less a matter of identity than of context, developmental timing, and the unique needs of the people involved.

The Mono-Poly Wars

Before we move further, we must address what I call the Mono-Poly Wars—a curious cultural conflict that pits two relational models against one another not merely as lifestyle preferences, but as competing moral worldviews.

Like many cultural debates, the disagreement quickly escalates into identity politics. Monogamy becomes framed as “the mature path” of commitment and devotion, while polyamory is cast as “the more evolved expression” of freedom and abundance. Over the years, I have witnessed a growing poly-dogmatism that can feel every bit as rigid as the monocentrism it purports to transcend. Within this mindset, monogamy is viewed as a “less evolved” or “fear-based” relic rather than as a valid relational orientation. Conversely, many defenders of monogamy continue to portray polyamory as little more than emotional immaturity, an inability to commit, or a sophisticated rationalization for self-centered gratification. When this happens, each side begins to see its own model not simply as one legitimate possibility, but as the enlightened way to love.

At that point, the debate ceases to be about relationships and becomes a struggle for moral legitimacy—and sometimes even moral superiority.

We see it in the familiar barbs traded between the two sides:

• The True Love Argument: Monogamists claim that polyamorous people “just have not found the right one,” while polyamorists counter that monogamists have not yet tapped into the expansive, nonpossessive essence of true love.

• The Sex Obsession Charge: Monogamists portray polyamory as thinly disguised hedonism—or even sexual addiction—while polyamorists regard the elevation of sexual exclusivity to an almost sacrosanct status as tits own form of obsession.

• The Patriarchal Trap Accusation: Monogamists see polyamory as a rebranded harem structure designed primarily to benefit men, while polyamorists interpret monogamy as a historical technology for regulating female sexuality and domesticating women’s autonomy.

Both sides fall into the common fallacy of judging the other by its most dysfunctional expressions while overlooking the full spectrum of its healthier possibilities.

The truth is simpler: there are both “lower” and “higher” expressions of every relational style. Lower forms emerge from fear, insecurity, coercion, or unexamined motivations. Higher forms arise from honesty, self-awareness, and a commitment to relational growth and mutual freedom. Most real relationships involve a shifting—and often messy—interplay of both.

The problem, then, is not that one side is right and the other wrong, but that each mistakes its own relational path for a universal prescription and reduces the other to its worst caricature.

Enter Novogamy

Returning to my personal journey, after moving through monogamy, polyamory, and back again, I realized that what I needed was not another position in the debate, but an entirely different map of relational life.

I eventually began to describe this orientation as novogamy (novo, “new,” and gamos, “union”).

At its core lies a simple insight: although some people experience monogamy or polyamory as deep relational dispositions, relational forms themselves need not harden into fixed identity categories.

At its deepest level, novogamy is not another relational model, but a new way of relating to such models. Rather than functioning as another alternative relationship style, novogamy is a meta-orientation toward intimacy that treats relational forms as flexible, context-sensitive frameworks rather than permanent identities.

It is essential to clarify that the prefix novo does not imply a hierarchy, nor does it situate novgamy as “superior” to existing relational models; it refers simply to their more recent historical emergence. Just as cisgender, transgender, and nonbinary identities are not inherently “better” or “worse” than one another, being novogamous is not, in principle, more evolved than being mono or poly. Rather, it describes a different relationship to the categories themselves.

From this vantage point, novogamy is less about prescribing how many people one should love and more about reclaiming the freedom to shape relationships according to individual dispositions, relational context, developmental pulls, and the ongoing evolution of one’s identity.

This perspective also differs from Relationship Anarchy. Unlike some interpretations of Relationship Anarchy that reject all forms of hierarchy, novogamy recognizes that consciously co-created structures—including primary–secondary configurations—can foster profound safety, clarity, and growth. We must be careful not to throw out the “bones” of commitment in our search for relational freedom; for many, a clear relational architecture is precisely what allows the heart to feel secure enough to open.

In this sense, novogamy shifts the central question from “How many people can or should we love?” to “What relational form best serves the flourishing of everyone involved at this particular moment in their lives?”

Three Pathways of Novogamy

Novogamy does not describe a single way of loving, but a family of pathways through which relational freedom can be cultivated.

1. Fluid Novogamy: The Seasonal Heart

Here we move between relational styles in response to life’s changing rhythms, transitions, and developmental phases.

We might shift based on psychosexual development, cultural contexts (practicing openness at festivals like Burning Man while choosing monogamy in everyday life), or the unique relational dynamics that emerge with a particular partner.

Crucially, this fluidity does not imply a lack of depth; countless examples throughout history show that profound love can flourish within nontraditional or open relational structures.

2. Integrative Novogamy: The Plural Psyche

Integrative novogamy holds multiple relational impulses within a single, consciously negotiated framework. Rather than viewing the human person as a monolithic entity, it embraces the reality that “we contain multitudes,” recognizing a multiplicity of inner voices, needs, and desires that are rarely aligned at any given moment.

It seeks to honor both the capacity for stability and devotion and the longing for expansion and variety—impulses that often coexist, however quietly, within us all.

Examples include “monogamish” partnerships with “free passes,” primary-secondary bonds, emerging technological hybrids involving AI companions or VR-mediated intimacy, and what I call the Consciousness Frontier. Here, lucid dreamers and psychedelic practitioners explore whether relational vows extend into intimate encounters with subtle beings.

3. Transcendent Novogamy: The Transbinary Frontier

Along this pathway, relational identity itself begins to dissolve as a meaningful organizing category.

Some individuals experience themselves as neither monogamous nor polyamorous, but as fundamentally beyond that binary. Some adopt terms such as ambiamorous to describe this flexibility. Others decline all labels altogether—not out of confusion, but as a deliberate effort to preserve the living ambiguity of relational life from premature conceptual closure.

Here, the binary itself dissolves. Love is no longer organized around fixed relational presets but around the evolving needs, values, and agreements of those involved.

In light of these options, are you mono or poly?

The answer may become less a question of identity than of context: when it is asked, at what stage of life, and from which layer of the self it is answered.

Further, you may be both simultaneously in different experiential settings, or have stepped beyond the need to define yourself by these labels entirely.

Relational freedom begins the moment we stop treating relational identity as fixed. In other words, it flourishes when the binary itself no longer governs our imagination of intimacy.

The Shadow Side of Intimacy

As our relational freedom expands, we must remain vigilant against what I call relational spiritual bypassing—the use of spiritual beliefs or relational ideals to avoid confronting unresolved psychological wounds in the intimate realm.

Examples include:

• Energetic Puritanism (The Monogamous Shadow): In certain spiritualized forms of monogamy, sex outside of the relationship is said to “pollute” the sacred container of the partnership or compromise the energetic integrity of the bond. Some individuals may indeed be more sensitive to these energetic dynamics, and for many, sexual exclusivity is essential for cultivating a deep relational field—especially during a relationship’s initial stages. However, we must be careful that the language of purity does not become a sacralized mask. It can easily conceal deeper fears of abandonment, unprocessed attachment wounds, or unacknowledged jealousy.

• The “Liberationist Harem” (The Polyamorous Shadow): Conversely, the language of polyamory can sometimes be misused to justify unequal relational dynamics. In some cases, charismatic people—most often men—deploy spiritual rhetoric to cultivate multiple lovers while subtly discouraging, restricting, or even policing their primary partners’ autonomy. In such situations, the language of “freedom” becomes a mask for unresolved insecurity and covert dominance patterns.

Like energetic puritanism in monogamy, this dynamic represents a shadow expression of an otherwise valid relational choice. In both cases, idealized spiritual language is co-opted in the service of unresolved psychological patterns.

While monocentrism can foster stagnation, poly-dogmatism can generate a “horizontal flight”—a restless pursuit of novelty that avoids the deeper vertical labor of remaining present with oneself or a partner when tension, boredom, or conflict arises. In this sense, novogamy is not an invitation to avoid the shadow work of intimacy, but rather but rather a flexible container in which to engage it more honestly.

At the same time, novogamy is not immune to these distortions. Without a foundation of integrity, transparency, and self-awareness, any relational framework—whether monogamous, polyamorous, or novogamous—can become a vehicle for avoiding genuine intimacy or unconsciously reenacting unresolved psychological patterns.

Attachment and Relational Choices

To be truly free, we must examine our attachment patterns.

Research suggests there are no major differences in attachment styles between monogamous and polyamorous populations. Yet our upbringing deeply shapes how we inhabit these relational models—or how they end up inhabiting us.

• Anxious Attachment: Some individuals gravitate toward monogamy as a protective container against abandonment fears. Others may move toward polyamory for the very same reason, creating a “relational diversified portfolio” of partners so that no single bond carries the full weight of potential loss.

• Avoidant Attachment: Highly avoidant individuals may prefer polyamory to preserve autonomy and avoid emotional engulfment. Yet avoidance can also manifest as within rigid monogamy, producing a distanced form of partnership in which commitment exists but emotional walls effectively prevent true intimacy.

• Secure Attachment: A secure foundation can support any relational structure. Security allows for both deeply rooted monogamous commitments and the “poly-capability” to witness a partner’s external connections without collapsing into jealousy, fear, or control.

Ultimately, self-awareness and emotional maturity matter more than relational structure. They allow us to navigate the relational landscape with integrity rather than being unconsciously driven by attachment wounds and adaptations.

Freedom Without Discernment is Chaos

Relational freedom is not a neo-liberal cafeteria model where partners become items on a menu.

It requires discernment across several key dimensions:

• Social Justice: Relational freedom cannot be separated from gendered, racial, and socioeconomic realities. In many Western circles, for example, polyamory is practiced within a “bubble of privilege.” For those already marginalized by class, race, or gender, the “freedom” to be non-monogamous often comes with a much higher social and safety tax—reinforcing stereotypes associated with their “hyper-sexuality.” Freedom without justice quickly becomes privilege disguised as philosophy.

• Contextual Value: Polyamory can be re-traumatizing for a survivor of sexual abuse, yet profoundly healing for someone whose relationships and sexuality were previously controlled by a patriarchal partner. Monogamy can be an oppressive institution, but in its most conscious and egalitarian forms, it can also provide a stabilizing container for sexual-emotional healing and psychospiritual growth.

• Health and Maturity: There are more and less mindful ways to practice any relational style. A traditional patriarchal monogamist may feel entitled to cheat—viewing his own affairs as a masculine prerogative—while forbidding their partner any outside contact with other men. In many cases, even platonic friendships are viewed as potential threats to the man’s sexual and emotional monopoly. Conversely, a polyamorous individual may use the language of openness to ·mask narcissistic entitlement, coercing partners into unwanted relational configurations while outsourcing the emotional complexity of the transition to those they claim to love.

Relational styles, therefore, cannot be evaluated as monolithic ideologies.

They must be understood in context, in practice, and within the broader structural fields of patriarchy, heteronormativity, racism, and monocentrism. A relational style is only as healthy as the awareness, consent, and power dynamics that sustain it.

The Relational Revolution

The 21st century is witnessing a quiet but profound transformation.

Across contemporary culture, relationship models are rapidly diversifying. Open relationships, monogamish partnerships, ambiamory, relationship anarchy, and other hybrid forms are increasingly entering public consciousness. Surveys show that younger generations are beginning to view monogamy and polyamory not as opposing camps, but as points along a dynamic relational spectrum.

These developments suggest that the monogamy-versus-polyamory debate may be less about reaching a final resolution than a transitional phase within a broader expansion of relational possibility. In time, the Mono–Poly Wars may come to seem as dated as earlier conflicts over rigid gender roles.

What is emerging in their place is something far more interesting and emancipatory: a pluralistic landscape of relational possibility.

Within this landscape, I propose I propose a guiding principle: The freedom to enter into the loving relationships one freely and responsibly chooses—including their number and form—is a fundamental human right. Importantly, that freedom must remain bounded by consent, honesty, mutual care, and shared flourishing.

Any normative cultural framework—whether monocentric or poly-dogmatic—that constrains this freedom risks impoverishing the legitimate diversity of human relational life.

An Invitation

This essay comes partly from my own longings and dreams.

In the ashes of so much relational confusion, I glimpse the possibility of a wiser love—but no single person can invent the future of love.

We can only discover it together.

To borrow—and gently reword—Rumi:

“Beyond monogamy and polyamory there is an open field.
I will meet you there.”

Gossip has a bad reputation—and often for justifiable reasons. At its most shadow-bound, it can be weaponized to ruin lives or shatter the sacred confidentiality of a friend’s most vulnerable transitions, from early pregnancy to private grief.

Yet, whenever patriarchal culture attaches a despicable attribute to women—and especially to lower-class ones—a deeper power dynamic is usually at play. This is certainly the case with gossip. In Spain, the archetype of the wicked meddler is the portera (the concierge); in England, it is the “fishwife.” Historically, these were often women past their reproductive years—widows or working-class elders often portrayed as obsessively interested in others’ lives because they “had no life of their own.” By labeling their talk “gossip,” the establishment dismissed laboring female communication as coarse, unreliable, and inherently “shrewish.”

This reflects an “intelligence double standard” born at the intersection of ageism, classism, and misogyny. When low-income elders share information, it is derided as “rumor-mongering.” When high-status men exchange the same social currency, it is rebranded as “networking” or an “insider briefing.” When the state does it, it is “intelligence.” The vice lies not in the act of sharing information, but in the perceived status of the speaker.

But what if gossip is the original “participatory glue” of the community?

From Sacred Talk to Malicious Vice

As so often happens in the history of ideas, etymology unveils the hidden truth. “Gossip” comes from the Old English god-sib (God-sibling), referring to women gathered around a mother during childbirth—her “sisters in God.” It was a term of deep spiritual intimacy and collective care, not trivial chatter.

During the rise of the early modern state, the god-sib underwent a violent transformation into the “malicious scold.” This was not a mere historical accident; it was a deliberate maneuver by the state and the landowning classes to break the informal information networks that allowed the marginalized to organize, warn, and protect one another.

Silvia Federici argues in Caliban and the Witch that the transition to capitalism required a counter-revolution—against the communal autonomy and peasant revolts of the late Middle Ages—designed to break resistance to the enclosure of lands. A central pillar was the criminalization of women’s speech. By stigmatizing female networks as “satanic” or “vile gossip,” the state successfully isolated women within the emerging nuclear family—ensuring silent, obedient, and unpaid reproductive labor.

The most visceral symbol of this shift was the Scold’s Bridle—an iron muzzle designed to physically silence women. It functioned as a strategic dam for the information flow of the portera class.

To break the gossip was to break the community’s defensive line, replacing horizontal bonds with a vertical order of institutional control.

The Portera: Gatekeeper and Social Librarian

This strategic silencing remains a potent force today. Even as the portera becomes a vanishing figure in the modern cities—replaced by the sterile efficiency of electronic doorways—the stigma attached to her role, and the communal networks of intelligence she once anchored, persists. This decline is more than a shift in labor or technology; it is the convenient dismantling of an informal justice system. By automating the entryway, the propertied classes have successfully traded human witness for digital privacy, ensuring that no eyes remain to archive the transgressions that occur out of public sight.

By labeling the portera’s information-sharing as “vile gossip,” the dominant class has long attempted to discredit the only horizontal network capable of holding them accountable from the bottom up.

In this sense, the portera is a Social Librarian of the Unspoken. From her liminal threshold—at the intersection of the private and the public—she sees the reality that the “higher classes” wish to keep hidden: the clandestine affairs, the domestic abuses, and the performative hypocrisies that unfold behind closed doors.

Because her testimony could shatter carefully curated reputations, it must be delegitimized. This devaluing of the witness is what philosopher Miranda Fricker calls “testimonial injustice”—a systemic prejudice that silences information based solely on the speaker’s social standing.

Branding the portera’s work “low-class gossip” is a modern form of epistemic censorship—an attempt to burn the “library of the people” before its contents can spark a moral reckoning.

The Architecture of the Whisper: Gossip as Survival

If the portera is a librarian, her collection is what political scientist James C. Scott calls a “hidden transcript.” For the marginalized, gossip is a weapon of the weak—a way to enforce justice where the legal system is indifferent or hostile. Researcher Nicole Hess suggests that, for modern women, gossip developed as a low-risk competitive strategy to deter exploitation and influence social standing without the physical dangers of direct conflict.

In spaces where the law stops at the front door, gossip becomes the law. The fear of being “talked about” often checks domestic violence more effectively than distant legal threats. In the barrios of Caracas, mothers use “circulating gossip” to shame gang members into “coexistence agreements,” protecting children through social pressure rather than force.

This Whisper Network also serves as a surveillance of care. Historically, it disrupted the isolation required for domestic abuse through intentional “unannounced” visits or watchful windows. Moreover, it is a laboratory for epistemic justice: before terms like “sexual harassment” or “marital rape” entered the legal lexicon, they lived in the whispered conversations of women.

By sharing stories, victims realize private pain is a shared political condition, allowing them to morally re-author their lives against patriarchal narratives. Today, the #MeToo movement stands as a digital Whisper Network, creating bottom-up accountability and an early warning system where institutions fail.

Crucially, this is not a static record of rumors. The Whisper Network operates—ideally—as a self-correcting archive; stories are constantly weighed and cross-referenced against the community’s shared experience in a collective process of social “fact-checking.”

In this light, modern “cancel culture” emerges as a complex, double-edged development. At its best, it is the digitized version of communal defense—a blunt instrument used to enforce consequences when institutions fail to provide justice.

At its worst, however, it can succumb to manipulation and exclusion, bypassing the slow, careful weighing of context in favor of immediate, irreversible social execution. When the digital speed of the “call-out” outpaces the self-correcting nature of the archive, the line between horizontal justice and testimonial injustice becomes dangerously thin.

Biologically, we are wired for the participatory exchange of social information. Robin Dunbar famously argued that as human groups outgrew physical grooming rituals, gossip evolved as a more efficient “vocal grooming” to maintain social bonds.

Supporting this view, Matthew Feinberg found that pro-social gossip—warning others about unreliable or selfish behavior—serves as a vital physiological release that lowers heart rates and reduces stress. This process releases oxytocin and serotonin, alleviating the individual weight of trauma through the act of being witnessed, while simultaneously applying pressure on bullies to reform.

A Taxonomy of the Tongue: From Weapon to Wonder

Reclaiming gossip requires honesty about its versatility. Above all, we must distinguish between the talk that tears down and the talk that builds up:

• The Shadow Pulse (Manipulation and Exclusion): This is the gossip that seeks to diminish or isolate. It includes defamation used for revenge, self-promotion disguised as concern (”She’s great, but...”), and the strategic use of secrets to signal who is “in” and who is “out.”

• The Protective Pulse (Survival and Justice): The Whisper Network in action. It provides a communal alarm for predators, creates horizontal justice when courts fail, and shares vital intelligence about exploitative landlords and bosses.

• The Connective Pulse (Care and Norm-Testing): The god-sib root. It manifests as empathetic reflection (”How can we help Maria?”), ethical calibration to negotiate community values, and praise-gossip that builds reputational wealth for those who serve the collective.

• The Philosophical Pulse (Insight and the Human Theater): The highest participatory level. Here, stories become living myths—a narrative weaving of communal experience. Gossip transforms into curiosity-driven inquiry, marveling at the kaleidoscopic diversity of human character, destiny, and contradiction.

The Mask and the Mirror: Privacy in a Hyper-Public Age

We live in a paradox: social media exhibitionism blended with a fierce, almost neurotic hyper-privacy. While some people are naturally more private, the wider the gap between the “curated self” and the “shadow self,” the more one fears the portera’s gaze. An addiction expert, for instance, may feel paralyzed by the idea of others discussing their own private battles with sobriety; a relationship expert may feel compelled to hide their marital struggles.

Hypersensitivity to gossip is often a symptom of an inner fracture—the frantic protection of a persona that cannot survive the light of the Librarian’s records.

However, this is not a justification for invasive “doxing” or the violation of private dignity. The portera’s purpose is not the indiscriminate exposure of the private, but the preservation of the “hidden transcript” to protect the vulnerable.

To rightly reclaim gossip, we must also distinguish between the silence of fear and the silence of respect. When we hide information because we are out of integrity, we are protecting a lie. Here, gossip acts as the social friction that wears down the hypocrite’s mask.

Conversely, sacred containment provides a “womb-time” for pregnancies, new ventures, or pivotal life transitions. Broadcasting these prematurely risks a dispersal of energy—a symbolic “abortion” before the process is strong enough to survive the world’s gaze. And yet, life rarely offers clean binaries; an abused woman concealing an affair to engineer a safe escape requires secrecy for survival.

Context always overrules tidy moral definitions.

Toward a Participatory Ethics of Gossip

To inhabit the god-sib tradition without falling into its shadow, we need robust ethical guidelines:

1. Confidentiality Through Explicit Consent: Confidentiality is not a telepathic agreement. If you want information to remain private, you must explicitly state it. We cannot accuse others of breaching a boundary we never drew. Sacred talk requires clear containers.

2. The “Hot Stone” Effect: Dumping volatile information about third parties onto a friend is what I call the Hot Stone effect. It relieves your tension by burning another’s hands. Ask for consent first: “I have difficult information regarding a mutual friend—are you in a space to hold this?” Passing a hot stone without permission is not community-building; it is a form of emotional offloading that traps the recipient in an ethical bind

   

   3. The Ethics of Connection: The goal is not to stop talking about one another—which is biologically and socially impossible—but to ensure that our talk is participatory rather than predatory. When we share sensitive information, are we strengthening the surveillance of care, or simply trying to cool our hands by burning someone else’s?

Ultimately, holding the hot stone of shared social intelligence requires an active commitment to treating relationships as a sacred trust. When our words are grounded in explicit consent, mutual readiness, and genuine care, the ancient practice of gossip ceases to function primarily as a weapon of exclusion. Instead, it recovers its deepest vocation: an enduring architecture of communal memory, participatory wisdom, and collective care.

A Personal Disclaimer

I do not mind confessing that I have been called a “gossip” all my life. The truth is that I always favored talking about people’s joys and tribulations over sports, pop culture, or even politics—that is part of why, I think, I became a clinical psychologist. While most of my narrative curiosity has been rooted in communal care, appreciative praise, or inquiry into the human condition, I am not proud—at all—of the times my past self has faltered. Even though I never intentionally engaged in malicious gossip, I have at times stumbled—passing hot stones to relieve my own tension or simply being careless about the impact of my words.

Needless to say, the boundaries of my professional practice are a different country entirely. In the counseling room, confidentiality is not a social choice but a sacrosanct vow; that space is a sealed vessel where the “Social Librarian” never enters. In the informal geography of my personal life, mindful speech is a work in progress. I write this essay not from above these questions, but from within them. It is, in part, an act of self-clarification—to better understand where I should speak with greater care, where I must honor the “womb-time” of others, and when I ought first to seek an explicit agreement of confidentiality before speaking.*

Conclusion: Reclaiming the God-sib

To rescue gossip from internalized patriarchy is to recognize that our so-called “idle chatter” forms the very thread that mends the social fabric. When we speak with care, witness with honesty, and listen with the ears of a god-sib, we are no longer merely “gossiping”—we are tending to the library of the human spirit.

The iron muzzle of the Scold’s Bridle is gone, but its ghost remains in modern self-censorship. By reclaiming the portera within, we stop being passive subjects of “vertical” institutional truth and become active participants in a “horizontal” communal reality. We must stop apologizing for our curiosity about one another; it is the biological and spiritual pulse of a species that cannot survive in isolation. If we can handle hot stones with ethics and shadow pulses with awareness, we transform gossip from a weapon of division into a tool of liberation.

The portera’s library remains open. It is time we stop trying to burn it—and start learning how to share the stories that keep us safe, keep us honest, and keep us human.

For decades, the Western world operated on the assumption that we had finally outgrown the rigid scripts of the past. Since the 1960s, the advent of the “pill,” the mass entry of women into the workforce, and the intellectual shifts of the 90s—notably Judith Butler’s theory of gender as a “performance”—seemed to effectively decouple biology from destiny.

We celebrated a new era of gender fluidity, viewing ourselves as finally emancipated from the heavy hand of patriarchal tradition.

Yet, today, we are witnessing a vigorous “New Gender Essentialism.” For those who rely on traditional structures and the modern seekers drawn to clear archetypal roles for a sense of grounding, the rapid deconstruction of gender norms has translated less as freedom and more as “ontological homelessness”—a state of cultural and psychological vertigo where many feel increasingly adrift.

In this vacuum, millions are retreating to the perceived “truth” of the physical body and the anchor of ancient archetypes. This is not a simple nostalgic withdrawal; it is a modern reconstruction of gender as an immutable biological and spiritual law.

The New Architects of Gender: Peterson and Swan

While this resurgence spans a spectrum from the hyper-masculine polemics of figures like Andrew Tate to the biological traditionalism of Matt Walsh, I have chosen to focus on Jordan Peterson and Teal Swan. Though they operate in vastly different intellectual registers—Peterson through the lens of academic psychology rooted in the Western canon, and Swan as a voice for popular “New Age” spiritual principles—both provide more than mere reaction. They appeal to universal archetypal or spiritual principles to ground their claims, offering frameworks that aim to explain the very structure of human reality.

For Peterson, the masculine and feminine are the primary maps for navigating existence. He defines the “masculine” as Order, the consciousness that explores the unknown, builds structures, and establishes hierarchies through competence and active leadership. Conversely, he frames the “feminine” as Chaos—the “maternal” source of all potential life and destruction.

Here, Peterson views the masculine as the “savior” of the feminine: the heroic Order that tames a threatening Chaos. In his view, men are biologically predisposed toward “things” and active protection, while women are drawn toward “people” and nurturance, making traditional roles a reflection of deep-seated, cross-cultural realities.

Teal Swan offers a metaphysical mirror to this, defining men and women as embodiments of distinct “energetic blueprints.” She posits that femininity is defined by Receptivity and “being-ness”—representing the “internal” world, emotional fluidity, and a magnetism that draws energy toward a center. In contrast, masculinity is defined by Projection and “doing-ness”—representing the “external” world, linear focus, and the drive to penetrate the world with purpose.

Where Peterson sees a savior, Swan views the masculine as the “container” for the feminine: the steady Direction that provides banks for a shapeless Flow. For Swan, these are immutable spiritual laws; she suggests much of modern suffering and mounting social issues stem from “polarity imbalances,” often arguing that a woman’s “natural” state is to be led by the masculine’s directional drive.

While Peterson anchors his claims in evolutionary biology and Jungian mythology and Swan relies on vibrational energy and a metaphysics of polarity, both are gender essentialists. They share the conviction that “equality” is not “sameness” and that deviating from these supposedly innate natures inevitably leads to psychological or spiritual “dis-ease.”

The Error of Denial: Bridging Essentialism and Fluidity

While in this essay I refute the universalist claims of the new essentialists, I am reminded of the maxim by the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz: “Most sects are right in a good part of what they affirm, but not so much in what they deny.”

This insight builds a bridge across our polarized gender divide. The New Gender Essentialists are right in what they affirm: that there are deep, archetypal, and biological polarities that provide a sense of “home” and meaning for a vast number of people.

Many men, in rightly rejecting “macho” toxicity, have inadvertently stifled their own healthy initiative; similarly, many women, in reacting to patriarchal subordination, may have lost contact with the profound power of their receptive depths.

There is a legitimate yearning for a grounded sense of “being a man” and “being a woman” that the “blank slate” theories of the 90s failed to satisfy. These are the “pearls” of the essentialist tradition: the deep psychological resonance found in archetypal belonging—even if, as we will see, those archetypes should be understood as radically diverse cultural inheritances rather than universal laws.

By the same token, the proponents of gender fluidity are right in what they affirm: that gender roles have been used as tools of oppression, that the binary is largely a cultural construct, and that the human spirit possesses a capacity for creative hybridization and transcendence that no binary can fully contain.

The error of both camps lies in what they deny. The essentialist is wrong to dismiss the lived experience of those who transcend the binary; the fluidist is wrong to dismiss the essentialist’s “pearls” as mere “internalized patriarchy.” Both sides falter the moment they claim their specific perspective as the sole or superior truth. Our task is not to crown a winner in the new gender wars, but to create a culture wide enough to hold the truth of both the anchor and the wing.

A participatory approach suggests that these are not mutually exclusive truths, but different ways of enacting the “energetic breath” of being human—ways that may be deeply resonant for some while entirely foreign to others.

The Biological Mirage and the Genetic Fallacy

To move forward, we must first address the genetic fallacy: the error of assuming that the evolutionary origin of a trait must dictate its ultimate value, meaning, or limitations. A woman’s biological capacity for gestation does not “destine” her to a passive social role any more than a man’s physical strength “destines” him to be an aggressor.

Already in the 70s, the myth of innate “biological passivity” fell apart. While gestation is primarily centripetal (inward), Adrienne Rich reminded us that childbirth is one of the most intensely active, world-shaping forces in human experience—a centrifugal power that is anything but passive.

Modern biology further reveals that even “sex” is not the simple binary essentialists claim. The biologist Anne Fausto-Sterling demonstrates that biological sex exists on a continuum of hormonal and chromosomal variations that defy rigid categorization. If the biological foundation is a spectrum, any archetypal mandate built upon it—the claim that gender must strictly follow a binary script—rests on shifting sand.

Furthermore, the neuroscientist Cordelia Fine’s research on “neurosexism” challenges the idea that “male” and “female” brains are hardwired for specific behaviors, showing our brains are far more plastic than biological determinism allows.

Essentialists often counter that while biology may not be “destiny,” it creates a “path of least resistance”—a bimodal distribution of traits that makes traditional roles more “natural” or efficient. However, this ignores the uniquely human capacity for creative adaptation. Just as we have used technology to “overcome” the friction of gravity or the limits of our natural vision, our cultural evolution allows us to transcend biological “defaults” in favor of higher psychological complexity.

To prioritize the “path of least resistance” is to choose stagnation over the active, participatory work of self-authorship.

The Cosmic Mirage: Heavenly Reversals

The New Essentialists claim that their definitions of “active” masculine and “receptive” feminine are universal truths. Whereas systems like Chinese cosmology—with its framework of Yin (receptive) and Yang (active)—appear to support this assignment, a global perspective reveals that these supposedly “eternal” attributes are frequently reversed

· Hinduism: The Masculine (Shiva) is the passive, still witness, while the Feminine (Shakti) is the kinetic, active energy that creates and destroys universes.

· West African (Fon) Traditions: Mawu (Feminine) is the initiator and creator, while Lisa (Masculine) provides the structural support.

· Ancient Greece: Hestia (Feminine) represents the active internal center and hearth, while Hermes (Masculine) acts as the receptive messenger.

· Mesopotamia: Inanna/Ishtar represents a feminine archetype of intense centrifugal initiative—the goddess of both sexual desire and the “storm” of war—defying any notion of innate female passivity.

Furthermore, the “New Gender Essentialists” often point to the heavens to justify their claims, yet a broader view reveals that our celestial gender assignments are far from universal. While the modern West inherits a Greco-Roman framework that identifies the Sun as masculine and the Moon as feminine, this is merely one cultural lineage. In Nordic, Germanic, Australian Aboriginal, and Japanese Shinto traditions, the Moon is often masculine (Máni, Tsukuyomi) and the Sun is feminine (Sól, Amaterasu).

Even our bedrock assumption of “Mother Earth” is a localized Greco-Roman inheritance (the Greek Gaia). When we look beyond the Mediterranean, that “innate” connection dissolves. In Ancient Egypt, the Earth was represented as masculine (Geb), reclining as the foundation, while the Sky was the feminine canopy (Nut), the active vault that gives birth to the sun. Similarly, in Sumerian mythology, the Earth was often embodied by Enlil, a masculine force of the grain and the soil.

Even where the feminine assignment remains, the character of that energy is transformed: in Maori cosmogony, the primal separation of Rangi (Sky Father) and Papa (Earth Mother) is not a story of “active vs. passive,” but of two massive, equal forces of longing and creation.

In the ancient Hittite tradition, we further find the “Sun Goddess of the Earth,” a figure who disrupts the binary entirely by merging solar brilliance with the subterranean depths. In these Middle Eastern and Oceanic myths, the earth/sky roles are far more fluid than our current parochialism suggests.

If these “spiritual laws” were truly baked into the structure of reality, we would not see such radical reversals across human history. These are not universal mandates; they are mythic constellations.

These examples strongly convey that gendered archetypes are not fixed blueprints, but potentials that can be enacted in different—even opposite—ways.

Associating activity solely with the masculine and receptivity with the feminine is not a universal law; it is cultural provincialism. It ignores the vast diversity in how humans have mapped the energetic forces of the cosmos

The Energetic Breath: A New Perspective

I propose a different lens: that of energetic polarity—a “breath” existing far beyond gendered roles. Physicists Ruth Kastner and Andreas Schlatter theorized that space and time, the very fabric of reality, emerge from an interplay of quantum emission and absorption—an “inward” and “outward” pulse at the most foundational level.

Beyond the quantum hypothesis, the biological reality is clear: life itself breathes. Our lungs inhale and exhale. Our hearts contract and expand. We all participate in these polarities across every dimension of our being—the centrifugal “outward” movement and the centripetal “inward” return.* In any given moment, we are either Leading the flow of energy or Following its lead:

1. Physical: Assertive Force vs. Restorative Nurturance.

2. Vital/Sexual: Directing Initiative vs. Receptive Surrender.

3. Emotional: Expressive Vulnerability vs. Empathic Attunement.

4. Mental: Vocal Speaking vs. Deep Listening.

5. Social: Proactive Leadership vs. Supportive Following.

When we “gender” these forces—labeling activity as male and receptivity as female—we engage in a form of psychological and social confinement.

As the sociologist Raewyn Connell suggests, these rigid structures reward narrow versions of identity while marginalizing the “receptive” or “active” traits that don’t fit the script. When we believe we must only embody one pole to be “authentic” to our gender, we unwittingly amputate half of our existential repertoire.

This is also central to the health of our society. A flourishing, participatory community is not built by delegating “activity” to men and “receptivity” to women. Rather, it is sustained by individuals who are capable of both listening deeply and speaking their truth.

A vibrant life arises from the ability to “breathe” between these states. A person who can only act (centrifugal) without resting (centripetal) burns out; a person who can only receive without ever initiating becomes a spectator of their own life. To be truly alive is to inhabit the full cycle of the breath.

The Shadow of the Breath: When Polarity Becomes Pathology

When divorced from balance, these forces curdle into pathology:

1. The “Masculine” Shadow (The Tyrant): Centrifugal force without a receptive center becomes aggression and dominance. This leads to hyper-competitive isolation, objectification, and the “Toxic Macho” archetype—the shadow feminist critiques rightly identify as the engine of patriarchal violence.

2. The “Feminine” Shadow (The Martyr): Centripetal force without assertive boundaries becomes stagnation and self-erasure. This leads to the “Self-Depleting Vessel” who dissolves her identity into the needs of others—socially conditioned to receive everything and initiate nothing.

By acknowledging these shadows, we recognize that the goal of human evolution may not be to conform to a gendered pole, but to master the creative rhythm between these two primal forces. If a community is over-centrifugal, it becomes a site of “speaking over,” noise, and competition. If it is over-centripetal, it degenerates into silent compliance where important truths are never birthed into the collective space.

Authentic participation is not about becoming more “manly” or “womanly” according to a tradition, but about becoming more humanly integrated—in ways that can freely play with the old polarities without allowing them to become cultural or psychological imperatives.

Conclusion: The Lesson of the Sky

As we survey the ruins of the gender wars, the question remains: Can we participate in the archetypal depths of the psyche and the cosmos without splitting ourselves into gendered partitions? If the history of world mythology teaches us anything, it is that the particular “laws” we thought were written in the stars are often the reflections of our own cultural mirrors.

Yes, if we look beyond our own reflections, nature teaches us that dynamic balance is the ultimate goal. It is a striking “coincidence” that the Sun (400x larger) and the Moon (400x closer) appear the exact same size from our vantage point on Earth—an extraordinary equality of influence in our celestial theater. While modern cosmology dismisses this as a mere accident of geometry, its symbolic weight remains undeniable.

When we open ourselves to an imaginal experience of the Anima Mundi—the meaningful interiority of the world—we begin to see that the cosmos itself may be configured to guide the human soul.

As James Hillman suggested, the “soul of the world” is not a theological concept but a way of enacting the world as inherently alive and expressive. In this mythopoetic register, the sky becomes a mirror. It suggests that the balance between these energies, however we label them, is vital to our unfolding.

In this light, the task of the modern human is to enact these forces creatively: a man may find his greatest strength in the receptive silence of “lunar” consciousness, just as a woman may find her wholeness in the “solar” fire of action—recognizing that these are not gendered destinies, but cosmic languages we are all invited to speak.

We are all the Sun and the Moon. The goal is not to choose a side, but to learn how to shine with both.

There is a scene in the 2005 film Cinderella Man that haunted me for years—not because of its cruelty, but because of its relatability. It is the height of the Great Depression. An officer from the electric company arrives at a freezing tenement to cut the power. The mother pleads for her three children, who will likely die without heat. The officer retorts that if he doesn’t do his job, he will be fired—and his own children will suffer the same fate.

Watching the cinema’s audience, I saw heads nodding in poignant understanding. The consensus was absolute: Of course. What else could he do?

We are biologically and culturally conditioned to view the privileging of our own offspring as morally beyond reproach. From the frantic protective violence in Taken to the recent hit series All Her Fault and His & Hers, the message is clear: unethical behavior—even killing—is empathically “excused” when performed in the name of our children.

But we must ask a question that feels sacrilegious to utter: At what point does the love for our own children become a form of structural violence against everyone else’s?

The Depth of Genetic Selfishness

I call this impulse Genetic Selfishness. It is distinct from Richard Dawkins’ “selfish gene” theory (which reduces us to survival machines for DNA replication); it is far more intimate. Genetic selfishness is the biologically engrained tendency to privilege our own progeny over any other human being—an invisible default setting ruthlessly governing our moral landscape.

The logic feels justifiable one-on-one. But stretch the canvas: What if saving my child condemns ten others? A thousand? A million? If we follow “my child at any cost” to its terminal point, how many children are we willing to sacrifice to preserve our genetic line? Where is the limit?

Social psychology confirms this “blind spot.” In “Trolley Problem” scenarios, participants must choose between letting a runaway trolley kill a group of people or diverting it to kill just one. In the context of kinship, the results are stark: when the life of one’s own child is at stake, our utilitarian ideal of the “greater good” invariably collapses.

Research by April Bleske-Rechek and collaborators found that the willingness to sacrifice the “Many” for the “One” becomes nearly absolute as genetic relatedness increases. For a parent, the child’s value is perceived as infinite, rendering the lives of strangers mathematically irrelevant.

This reflex is rooted in the “Oxytocin Paradox.” While oxytocin facilitates bonding, Carsten De Dreu’s research revealed its darker, “parochial” edge. It drives a “tend-and-defend” response, upregulating altruism for one’s own family while triggering cold indifference—or even preemptive aggression—toward strangers and their offspring.

Genetic selfishness is not a “bug” in our moral software; it is a hard-wired feature that ensures the survival of the lineage at the potential cost of the species.

We do not accept raw aggression or the unchecked pursuit of every bodily impulse simply because they are “natural” urges. We recognize that civilization requires the regulation of our biology. Yet, strangely, we continue to accept the hoarding of resources for our children as a biological imperative, rather than an evolutionary impulse we must now outgrow.

From Alpha Instincts to Modern Plutocracy

In nature, alpha males of many species kill the progeny of rivals to ensure the survival of their own genes. Research by primatologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy confirms that primate investment is almost always a calculation of genetic certainty.

As humans, we have learned to “sublimate” our violent instincts into civilized behavior. Yet, this ancestral drive for lineage prioritization has not vanished; it has simply evolved, manifesting today through our obsession with patrilineage, inheritance, and the competitive structures of our modern sociology.

This transition from raw instinct to social strategy is best captured by Annette Lareau, who describes how “genetic selfishness” manifests as “Concerted Cultivation”—a relentless, resource-heavy competition for the success of one’s own children.

Sociologist Margaret Hagerman further notes a “moral gap”: even parents who profess to value social justice and equality often make private decisions—regarding segregated schooling or opposing local low-income housing—that prioritize their own child’s “competitive edge” over the collective good of the community.

Today, genetic selfishness has moved from the savanna and the neighborhood to the boardroom, fueling a Plutocratic Capitalism that scales this biological bias into a global crisis of inequality.

The Systemic Mechanisms of Genetic Selfishness

To understand how, we must look at what economist Branko Milanovic calls “homoploutia”—a state where the same elite occupy the top rungs of both labor income and capital ownership. This isn’t the meritocracy it claims to be; it is a self-perpetuating cycle of intergenerational transmission of privilege, one where the wealthy use their power to rewrite the social contract under the guise of “family protection.”

For the average family navigating the precarious pressures of modern capitalism, prioritizing a child's education or financial safety is an act of genuine survival. But as this natural impulse scales up the economic ladder into the realm of the ultra-wealthy, it mutates from basic provision into a weapon of mass exclusion. This structural insulation through three primary mechanisms:

• Inheritance Laws: Lobbying to ensure financial capital remains a “birthright.”

• Instrumentalized Education: Funneling massive capital into elite schooling and legacy admissions to transform money into “cultural capital” for the next generation.

• The Dynastic Veil: Utilizing offshore havens and complex trusts to shield wealth, rebranding tax evasion as a “parental duty” to protect the bloodline.

This is “genetic selfishness” at a systemic scale: it creates a durable, self-contained upper class—one increasingly detached from the rest of society and deeply invested in resisting any redistributive measures that might dilute their offspring’s competitive advantage.

The Numbers of Exclusion

While the electric company officer in Cinderella Man was protecting the immediate need for heat, the modern global elite use the same justification to shield staggering sums for a hypothetical future. According to economist Gabriel Zucman (updated in the World Inequality Report 2026), an estimated $8.7 trillion—roughly 10% of global GDP—is stashed in offshore tax havens.

Offshore entities like the “Isle of Man trusts” or “dynastic foundations” are explicitly designed to ensure that a family’s capital remains untouched by the “interference” of national taxes or social contributions. In these circles, tax evasion is marketed as “Succession Planning” and understood as a parental duty—a moral obligation to ensure that the “bloodline” remains financially fortified against an unstable public world.

The cumulative impact of these “private” decisions is a staggering public deficit:

1. Taxation: Genetic hoarding results in approximately $200 billion in annual tax losses globally.

2. The Education Caste: The gap in education spending between the world’s poorest and wealthiest regions has reached a ratio of 1 to 40.

3. Capital Bottleneck: The top 1% now holds more wealth than the bottom 90% combined.

Ultimately, we are witnessing the transformation of a deeply human micro-duty—the protection of one’s own—into a devastating macro-harm.

From Private Virtues to Public Vices

In short, those understandable—and apparently benign—clichés regarding a parent’s love for their children often mask a darker systemic reality. When scaled to a global level, these private virtues become public vices with tragic consequences:

· The imperative of “protecting my children’s future” through the shielding of assets creates an astonishing drain on the social contract, directly threatening the survival of millions of other people’s children.

· The justification of “giving my child the best start possible” has institutionalized a new form of caste system, effectively dismantling the ladder of opportunity for everyone else.

· The drive to “build a family legacy” succeeds in creating bloodlines fortified against the whims of fate, yet does so by withdrawing essential capital from the common good.

While the internal logic of genetic selfishness views these behaviors as a “victory” for the lineage, the external reality for our species is a terminal bottleneck that stifles the flow of human progress.

The Boardroom Myopia

I saw this dynamic firsthand while serving on a coaching team for the top global leaders of a ubiquitous consumer goods corporation—a company denounced for depleting local aquifers and marketing sugary drinks to vulnerable youth. Among the executives I personally coached were a soon-to-be global CEO and the President of the North America Operating Unit.

Against my prejudices, I found these men were not “villains.” They were caring fathers. Painfully aware of the volatile future their children could face, one executive confessed: “I am very afraid for my family.” Their intimate anxiety for their offspring functioned as a psychological shield.

By focusing on their micro-duty—the immediate protection and provision for their own children—they were able to screen out the macro-harm their corporation inflicted on millions of other people’s children. Their “goodness” as fathers provided a moral cover for their negligence as global citizens.

It is crucial to understand that the internal experience of this selfishness feels like love. It is not malicious; it is simply myopic. But in a globalized world, myopia can be as deadly as malice.

To the wealthy and influential: If you secure your child’s inheritance but help burn down the planetary house they must live in, you have not protected them; you have merely sentenced them to a life of defensive anxiety.

By insulating them within a fortress of privilege while the surrounding world decays, you leave them with a grim inheritance: the exhausting necessity of defending their walls against those your own lifestyle has marginalized.

As the health economists Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett demonstrated in their landmark research—most recently in The Inner Level—extreme inequality is a "lose-lose" scenario where even the winners suffer from poorer health and diminished well-being.

It is a dangerous fiction to believe your family can be truly well while the majority of families are not. In such a world, your children don’t inherit peace—they inherit a fortress that is also a prison.*

A Call to Expand Our Circle of Identification

Though I am not a father myself—despite the deep admiration I feel for parents—I have long felt that this lack of “skin in the genetic game” allows for an arguably clearer view of this taboo.

After introducing this controversial notion two decades ago, I was reassured to find that Marcia Angell—former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine and a mother herself—shared these very concerns. She argues that when parents view the world exclusively through the lens of their own children’s projected needs, social solidarity collapses. Why fund public schools or healthcare when those resources could instead give my child a private edge?

The circle of empathic identification shrinks until it is no larger than the family tree.

We are at a crossroads. Our archaic “tend-and-defend” reflex is now at odds with our survival. True parental responsibility in the 21st century requires a shift toward Participatory Care:

• For the Individual: Ask: In what ways is my “care” for my child actually a justification for my indifference toward others?

• For the Wealthy: Champion policies that prioritize the Human Family—and the wider raft of Life—over the Dynastic Bloodline. Close offshore loopholes and fund a global “floor” for all children. Crucially, this is not a call for unilateral financial disarmament—which would only punish the conscientious—but for the enforceable systemic floors that free parents from the prisoner’s dilemma of hoarding.

• For the Culture: Stop romanticizing the “parent who will do anything” as the ultimate hero. We need stories of those who hold the tension between love for their own and solidarity with the stranger.

The question must shift from “How do I insulate my children from a failing world?” to “How do I help build a world that is stable enough for my children to thrive in—and what must I contribute today so they can be proud of the legacy I leave behind?”

What if the “hallucinations” we experience on psychedelics aren’t just solo trips inside our skull? Most modern scientists operate under the untested assumption that only the physical, spatiotemporal world exists. From this perspective, any vision of a subtle dimension of reality is immediately dismissed as a biological glitch or nothing more than an absurd supernatural fantasy.

This rigid stance creates a massive blind spot. In my work, I have long challenged the artificial wall between the natural and the supernatural. I find the term “supernatural” unhelpful; it evokes ghostly folklore and acts as a scientific “junk drawer” for anything modern naturalism isn’t ready to face.

By deciding in advance that these dimensions are impossible, we risk ignoring a mountain of evidence and the profound impact that these realms may have on our lives. Shared psychedelic visions offer a compelling case.

Meeting the “Astral Doctors”

In 2008, during an ayahuasca ceremony in the Peruvian jungle, I witnessed something that shook my scientific training to its core. As the healer began an icaro (healing song), I saw a thick thread of white light emerge from his mouth. Following the light, I watched several tall, humanoid entities made of “fuzzy white light” enter the room.

These beings, known as “astral doctors,” moved with clear intent, performing tangible energetic adjustments on the participants. When they reached me, I felt an extraordinary finesse—a series of precise, microscopic recalibrations within my energetic centers, accompanied by a sense of deep healing and instinctive trust in their benevolent nature.

When I later spoke to the healer, he corroborated the vision with total nonchalance—as if it were perfectly ordinary that these entities would frequent some ceremonies but bypass others. In fact, Indigenous healers often “compare notes” after ceremonies to search for intersubjective agreement, much like scientists look for replicability in a lab.

The Red Spiderwebs: A Case for “Real” Visions

Years earlier, during a San Pedro ceremony in Peru, I saw intricate, red, energetic spiderwebs in the space before my eyes that snapped back elastically when I touched them. With my researcher hat on, I asked another participant—a woman who had never tried the medicine before—what she saw in that direction, careful not to lead her.

To my shock, she described the exact same red webs.

For the next two hours, this woman, the healer, and I shared breathtaking external visions: blue and green energies entering our bodies and vortices of color spinning around the healer’s “power objects.”

This wasn’t a vague “vibe.” We were seeing and interacting with the same energetic shapes and movements in real-time—a shared environment of synchronized actions and observations that functioned as far more than a mere parallel broadcast.

This level of intersubjective consistency suggests that the medicine wasn’t merely a “hallucinogen” in the sense of creating something from nothing. Instead, it seemed to act as a chemical bypass for the brain’s evolutionary filters—temporarily retuning our sight to perceive “subtle dimensions” that are normally invisible to us.

A Pattern of Shared Reality

These aren’t isolated incidents. Indigenous peoples across the world claim that their medicines grant access to “True Seeing” (Matsigenka), “Second Sight” (Thonga), or “Stargazing” (Navajo).

Western culture is equally full of these “glitches” in the standard narrative:

• The Greys: Visionary artists Alex and Allyson Grey simultaneously shared a vision of interconnected energetic fountains and drains in 1976—a vision that defined their life’s work.

• The McKennas: Terence and Dennis McKenna’s Amazonian experiments were famously built on shared entheogenic “downloads.”

• The “Gray Blob”: Anthropologist Edith Turner, during a Zambian healing ritual, saw a “large gray blob” emerge from a patient—a vision shared by three healers and the patient simultaneously.

My own experiences belong to this wider, often hushed, global pattern. Since I began sharing these stories, I have been inundated with compelling accounts from others who have experienced similar experiences. It is becoming increasingly clear that we are not dealing with mere anomalies, but with a consistent human capacity.

Why “It’s All in Your Head” Falls Short

Skeptics easily dismiss inner individual visions as private brain hallucinations. But what about shared outer visions? As the late neurologist Oliver Sacks noted, the “shareable” nature of a sensory claim is exactly what separates a successful perception from a hallucination.

In both science and philosophy, intersubjective agreement is the gold standard for reality. If multiple people see the same “spirit” externally, the “private hallucination” model collapses.

Furthermore, our existing models for “collective hallucination” fail to account for these experiences:

1. Shared Psychosis: Involves long-term delusions in the mentally ill, not clear-eyed, temporary visions in healthy people.

2. Mass Suggestion: Usually involves expected events (like a weeping statue). These psychedelic visions often take participants by total surprise.

While simple geometric patterns might be caused by the visual cortex reacting to chemicals, that “bottom-up” explanation cannot account for people seeing complex landscapes, autonomous entities, or mythological reenactments. Pioneer Stanislav Grof views these initial patterns as a “sensory layer” one must cross before encountering truly archetypal and transpersonal realms.

Beyond the Filter: The “Perfect Storm” of Enaction

To understand these visions, we must reconsider a crucial brain function. Henri Bergson and William James famously proposed the “Filter Theory”: the brain acts as a “reducing valve,” filtering out a massive amount of data to prevent being overwhelmed by information irrelevant to survival. For example, we see less than 0.0035% of the electromagnetic spectrum; we are, by biological necessity, partially blind.

Contemporary neuroscience supports this. Studies show that substances like LSD inhibit the “gating function” of the thalamus, allowing an inflow of data into the cerebral cortex—the primary seat of conscious awareness—that is usually blocked. As neuroscientist Anil Seth remarked, “perception is controlled hallucination and hallucination is uncontrolled perception.” However, filtration is only half the story.

My hypothesis is that these visions emerge from a “perfect storm”: the reduction of the brain’s filters combined with an “empowered imagination.” This isn’t imagination as “make-believe,” but a creative, participatory faculty that allows us to shape and interact with subtle data—a realm the great scholar Henri Corbin called the mundus imaginalis.

The Co-Creation of Worlds

While cognitive scientists like Donald Hoffman argue that our evolution has gifted us with a simplified perceptual interface—one that hides a complex, user-independent reality—to keep us focused on survival, my approach goes a step further into participatory enaction.

Extending the enactive paradigm of cognition beyond its original confinement to the natural world, I suggest that we do not simply “discover” these subtle realities, nor do we invent them. Instead, we co-create them.

Our knowing participates in the generative force of the cosmos—together with the knowing of possible subtle entities—to “bring forth” a world. Even when we may be accessing autonomous dimensions of reality, a form of creative enactment always takes place. Spiritual and visionary knowing is not about finding a pre-existing object, but about the enactment of a shared reality.

This stance is both constructivist and realist. It recognizes our role as participants while entailing a genuine engagement with a “Protean” (ever-changing) reality.

These enacted worlds are not “mere” hallucinations; they can be real.

From One Nature to Many Worlds

This approach challenges the “mononaturalism” of modern science—the idea that there is only one world we all just look at differently. Instead, it suggests a “multinaturalism.”

As Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro explains, different “hardware” (bodies and minds) doesn’t just perceive the same world differently—it actually brings forth ontologically distinct worlds.

Consider the honeybee: while we see a simple yellow flower, the bee’s ultraviolet-sensitive eyes bring forth a world where that same flower radiates “landing strips” of hidden light to guide its flight. The bee isn’t seeing a fragment of our world, nor is it simply perceiving a different slice of a pre-given reality—it is enacting a different nature entirely.

In a participatory universe, our reality is not a static object—it emerges in relationship. However, this is not an “anything goes” subjectivism. Just as physical reality resists us when we walk into a wall, these subtle realms offer their own resistances, ensuring that our encounters stay grounded in the logic of those domains.

Toward a New Cartography

Instead of a “closed” science, we need an Open Naturalism—an approach that does not impose preconceived restrictions on what may exist and accepts as “true” everything we must accept in order to make sense of our experience.

Contemporary scientists, from biologist Michael Levin to AI experts, are already hypothesizing other dimensions of reality. Levin’s work on the “bioelectric code” suggests that agency and intelligence exist in spaces we are only now beginning to map.

Furthermore, neurobiological research suggests the brain’s structural complexity can operate in high-dimensional manifolds, leading some to hypothesize that our neural architecture possesses a latent capacity to interface with a reality far vaster than daily survival requires.

Ultimately, we could turn these perceptual reports and dimensional hypotheses into a formal research program: teams of scientists and Indigenous healers using mind-expanding means to systematically map shared visions in real-time. We cannot predict what we will discover, but we will never know until we commit to this kind of collaborative inquiry.

Let’s bring the full range of our ways of knowing—and our diverse validity standards—to bear on the results. Let’s engage with both an open participatory heart and the full critical power of the scientific mind. After all, as Terence McKenna used to say, “If it’s real, it can take the pressure.”

And if we are able to consistently enact shared data, we could finally move past the “it’s all in your head” trope and begin a serious cartography of a multidimensional cosmos.

We aren’t just observers of the world; we are participants in its ongoing creation. Are we living in a simple, physical box—or a vaster reality where the material doesn’t exhaust the potencies of the real?

“We live in a participatory universe,” wrote the eminent physicist John A. Wheeler, to whom we owe the term black hole. Whether we look at quantum physics, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy of mind, or even psychedelic research, it has become clear that human existence and knowledge are thoroughly participatory.

We are not just spectators watching a pre-made world; we are active participants in the co-creation of everything we perceive and the very pulse of cosmic unfolding I term the mystery.

I am calling this approach The Participatory Way. It is born from my life’s work and the recognition that we are always partaking in the universe’s self-disclosure simply by existing. This essay outlines the foundations of this path, starting with three primary observations about our shared human situation.

Our Shared Human Situation

My participatory thought is founded on three basic observations:

1. Existence: The undeniable fact that “something” exists rather than nothing.

2. Creative Diversification: This “something” undergoes a discernible process of complexification and interiorization—from particulate to galactic, biological to mental, and cultural to contemplative.

3. Self-Conscious Participation: Human beings are not mere observers but creative participants in the mystery of life and reality.

Metaphysical Openness

Rather than viewing the world as a “dead machine” or a “nostalgic playground” for spirits, I propose a Metaphysical Openness. This means:

• Open Naturalism: Recognizing that Nature is far deeper and more multi-dimensional than our current scientific understanding suggests.

• The Primacy of Mystery: Acknowledging that no single map—scientific or religious—can claim to be the whole territory.

• The Right to Inquire: Affirming that you have the autonomy to explore the nature of existence free from the constraints of any dogmatic authority.

Bringing a World to Life: Participatory Knowing

In this context, we move past the idea that knowledge is just a neutral “fact” in our heads. Instead, knowing is an act of bringing a world to life through three dimensions:

1. Embodied: It involves your whole person—body, heart, and mind—not just your intellect. Cognitive and creative powers reside as much within our somatic and emotional depths as they do in the mental.

2. Relational: Truth emerges from our interconnectedness with others and the world; we are all students and teachers to one another. The pursuit of knowledge is a collective process that gains its strength when our diverse perspectives meet and find common ground.

3. Enactive: We don’t just receive the world; we “enact” or bring forth the reality we participate in. Historically enacted worlds become, in a way, “given” to future knowers, but we can always co-create with what we encounter in mutually transformative ways.

Three Tests for Real Growth

Since our knowing shapes the worlds we inhabit, we must be accountable for the fruits of those enactments. To ensure our orientation to life stays grounded, I suggest three guiding tests to assess the quality and impact of our beliefs and practices:

• The Dissociation Test: Does a perspective or practice help you become a whole, integrated person, or does it create “splits” and repression?

• The Eco-Socio-Political Test: Does this way of knowing contribute to social justice, political freedom, and the well-being of the planet?

• The Egocentrism Test: Does this path move you toward self-transcending participation, or does it reinforce subtle forms of narcissism?

Crucially, these tests should be applied with keen contextual and cultural sensibility; they offer a compass for evaluating the integrity of our insights and their real-world consequences, including how we approach the uses of new technology and AI.

Celebrating Diversity with Discernment

The Participatory Way eschews one-size-fits-all rankings—the belief that there is a single universal hierarchy that can judge the superiority of one path over all others.

Whether we are looking at spiritual systems, relational styles, or diverse ways of knowing, we move away from rigid, “top-down” hierarchies in favor of a critical pluralism. This provides tools for discernment without falling into the trap of “anything goes” relativism.

As the philosopher Isaiah Berlin stressed, pluralism should be sharply distinguished from relativism. A river can be crossed in many places and ways, but this does not mean that all crossings are equally effective or that every method (such as crossing it over the dead bodies of our enemies) is morally acceptable.

We can recognize a plurality of valid paths while remaining committed to critical discernment and ethical integrity.

Moving Beyond Old Conflicts

The Participatory Way offers a “third way” to get past the binaries that have limited our thinking for centuries. We will explore:

• Science & Spirit: Moving beyond the choice between “disenchanted materialism” and “blind faith” or “subjective delusions”.

• Self & Society: Balancing our unique individuality with our need for collective communion.

• Relational Diversity: Applying these ideas to human intimacy, exploring the spectrum between monogamy and polyamory with relational accountability and mindfulness.

This Substack is an invitation into a co-creative dialogue with the participatory worldview and the mystery itself. You can expect essays that transform deep philosophical concepts into actionable tools for your life.

While I draw on a rich history of thinkers like Isaiah Berlin and Richard Tarnas, this is not a scholarly journal—it is a community for those with an interest in engaging this way of being.
