One of the essential teachings of the Christian faith is the doctrine of salvation by faith alone in Jesus Christ. This is the teaching that we are saved by faith alone in Jesus, and not because of any good deeds that we do. Ephesians 2:8-9 puts it this way, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

One passage of Scripture that seemingly contradicts this doctrine is James 2:14-26. In verse 24 James states, “You see that a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone.” At face value, this is a contradiction between James and Paul—Paul teaches salvation by faith alone, while James teaches salvation by faith plus works. But this apparent contradiction is easily resolved when we consider the different ways the Bible uses the word justification.

Defining Terms

Just as we can use the English word bat to refer either to a baseball bat or to an animal, words in biblical times could also have multiple meanings. Consider a few biblical examples:

Just as in the examples above, the word justification has multiple senses in Scripture. Rather than creating a contradiction between James and Paul, this distinction demonstrates two compatible truths taught throughout Scripture.

Lest someone say this is special pleading or an attempt to avoid a clear contradiction, let’s look at some examples from Scripture that clearly demonstrate the different meanings of justification.

Justification in Paul

When Paul speaks of justification, he uses the term in a judicial sense, referring to the act of a judge declaring a person innocent or righteous.

Justification, as Paul uses it, answers the question: How can I be right before a holy God? Paul’s answer is: faith. In Romans 3:28, he says, “For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.” What Paul means is that a person is declared righteous before God through faith. When a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ, the perfect righteousness of Christ is counted to him, and he therefore receives a righteous standing before God.

If justification were dependent upon our own righteousness, no one would ever be right before God because the requirement is perfection. But the good news of the gospel is that we can be declared righteous with a righteousness not our own, namely, the righteousness of Christ, which comes through faith in him. As Paul says in Philippians 3:8-9, “In order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”

This forensic or legal meaning of justification can be seen in the following passages:

The Hebrew verb translated as justify has the same judicial sense found in Paul. The Hebrew verb means to acquit or pronounce somone to be in the right. The Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) translates it with dikaioō—the same Greek verb Paul regularly uses for justification.

Justification is again used in a declarative sense here. This cannot mean to infuse someone with righteousness or grace, as the Roman Catholic Church defines justification. God would then be saying, “I will not make wicked people morally righteous.” That would make no sense since morally transforming them would be a good thing. Rather, it means that God will not acquit or declare a guilty person innocent.

This passage describes a corrupt judicial verdict. The guilty remain morally guilty, but corrupt judges declare them to be in the right. Again, this must be a declarative judicial statement because human judges cannot make anyone righteous or guilty, they merely declare a person innocent or guilty.

As in the previous passage, justification and condemnation are opposite judicial declarations. Neither verdict morally transforms its object: condemning a righteous person does not make him wicked, and justifying a wicked person does not make him righteous.

This clearly refers to declarative justification because God justifies the person who is still described as “ungodly,” and his faith is “counted as righteousness.”

Paul places justification in an explicitly courtroom setting: accusation, justification, and condemnation. God’s justification is the verdict opposite to condemnation—the believer is declared righteous and free from condemnation.

We can see that one of the definitions of justification in the Bible is a legal declaration of righteousness given by God or a human judge. This is the sense of the word that Paul uses in his letters. But what about James?

Justification in James

The meaning of justification in James is not “to be declared righteous before God” but rather “to be proven or demonstrated as true before others.” James means that our works prove, show, or demonstrate to others (and to ourselves) that we have genuine saving faith. In other words, Paul is speaking about justification before God, while James is speaking about justification before men.

James asks in James 2:14:

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?”

The question that James is answering is “What type of faith saves a person?” Most translations rightly translate the sense of the article before the word faith as “that faith.” The question is not, “Shall faith be able to save him?” (so the Douay-Rheims translation), but rather, “Can that faith save him?”

The faith under discussion is not genuine saving faith but the inadequate self-declared faith from the first half of verse 14. James refers to this as an actual kind of faith, but not one that saves. He calls it a “dead” faith and a faith that even demons have (vv. 17,19). It is merely intellectual assent to the truths about Christ, rather than personal trust in Christ.

How can someone determine whether he has this “dead” faith or a true saving faith? James says “by works”. In verse 18 we read:

“But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”

In other words, the way we show or demonstrate our faith is by good works. We are saved by faith alone, but true faith is not demonstrated by simply claiming to have faith. True faith is demonstrated by works. This is what James means when he says: “You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone” (v.24).

In the Bible, we see the word justification being used in the sense of “to demonstrate or vindicate” in many places. For example:

What does Jesus mean by “justify”? Does he mean that wisdom is declared righteous by God and forgiven of sin? Of course not. Jesus is simply saying that wisdom is vindicated by its result. Wisdom is shown to be wisdom by what it produces.

This is Luke’s parallel to Matthew 11:19.

The lawyer who questioned Jesus wanted to show himself to be in the right. He was attempting to defend his conduct and prove that he had adequately obeyed the commandment to love his neighbor.

James says our good works justify us before men. But the Pharisees attempted to justify themselves before men without good works by putting on an outward appearance of righteousness.

Paul, quoting Psalm 51:4, says that God is shown to be right, or vindicated as right, in everything he has said whenever he is judged.

The word translated “vindicated” is dikaioō, the same word used for justification. In this sense, it means that Christ was proven to be who he claimed to be when he was raised by the Holy Spirit. As Romans 1:3-4 says: “concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead.”

Justification in the Early Church

These two uses of the word justification can clearly be seen in Scripture, but even outside the Bible we see the word used in these two different senses. One great example can be seen in the early Christian writing 1 Clement. The bishop Clement writing in the 2nd century uses these two meanings of the word justification within only a few paragraphs of each other.

In 1 Clement 30:3, Clement exhorts his readers to be justified by works, saying:

“clothe yourselves in concord, being lowly-minded and temperate, holding ourselves aloof from all backbiting and evil speaking, being justified by works and not by words.”

Then a few paragraphs later in 32:4, Clement states that we are justified by faith and not by works:

“And so we, having been called through His will in Christ Jesus, are not justified through ourselves or through our own wisdom or understanding or piety or works which we wrought in holiness of heart, but through faith, whereby the Almighty God justified all men that have been from the beginning; to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

So, for Clement, believers are “justified by works” (30:3) and yet are not justified by works (32:4). It would not be reasonable to assume that Clement is contradicting himself in the same letter only a few paragraphs apart. More likely, like Paul and James, Clement expects his readers to recognize the different way in which the word justified is being used in each context.

A Hermeneutical Principle

One of the most important rules of the interpretation of Scripture is this: Scripture interprets Scripture. The greatest interpreter of Scripture is Scripture itself. One of the ways we apply this principle is by interpreting the unclear in light of the clear. Whenever there is a difficult passage of Scripture that is hard to understand, look to other places in Scripture where the same subject has been addressed in a clear, explicit, and more thorough manner.

Paul addresses the issue of justification thoroughly in Romans and Galatians, and he makes it clear there that we are justified by faith apart from works. So when we come to a book like James, which is a practical book on Christian living and not a theological treatise on salvation like Romans or Galatians, we should seek to understand James in the light of those books, rather than the other way around.

Hay una diferencia entre las preguntas «¿Cómo puedo ser salvo?» y «¿Cómo puedo estar seguro de que soy salvo?». Una ilustración que me gusta utilizar para explicar esta diferencia es la que existe entre las preguntas «¿Cómo se llega a ser médico?» y «¿Cómo podemos saber si alguien es médico?».

¿Cómo se llega a ser médico? Obteniendo una licenciatura, estudiando medicina y completando un programa de residencia. Pero esto es diferente de cómo determinar si alguien es médico. Se puede determinar si alguien es médico viendo sus títulos o su licencia médica, o viéndole ejercer como médico en un hospital. Del mismo modo que hay una diferencia entre cómo convertirse en médico y cómo saber si alguien es médico, hay una diferencia entre cómo convertirse en cristiano y cómo saber si alguien es cristiano.

Verás, no basta con que alguien afirme ser cristiano o que diga creer en Jesús. Una profesión de fe no significa que una persona posea verdaderamente la fe. La fe no es visible a simple vista; cualquiera puede afirmar que tiene fe, pero ¿cómo sabemos si nosotros —o cualquier otra persona— poseemos la fe? La respuesta principal que da la Biblia sobre cómo podemos saber si somos verdaderamente cristianos es esta: una vida transformada.

Cuando alguien se convierte en cristiano, en el momento en que pone su fe en Cristo, ocurren dos cosas que transforman su forma de vivir: recibe el Espíritu Santo y recibe una nueva naturaleza. Su nueva naturaleza cambia su corazón y sus deseos, haciendo que ahora ame lo que Dios ama y odie lo que Dios odia (Juan 3:3-8; 2 Pedro 1:4). Y el Espíritu Santo también produce en él el fruto del Espíritu: amor, alegría, paz, paciencia, amabilidad, bondad, fidelidad, mansedumbre y dominio propio (Gálatas 5:22-24). Como dice Ezequiel 36:26–27:

«Además, les daré un corazón nuevo y pondré un espíritu nuevo dentro de ustedes; quitaré de su carne el corazón de piedra y les daré un corazón de carne. Pondré dentro de ustedes Mi espíritu y haré que anden en Mis estatutos, y que cumplan cuidadosamente Mis ordenanzas».

He aquí algunos pasajes de las Escrituras que enseñan que a un verdadero creyente se le reconoce por una vida transformada:

• 1 Juan 2:3-6: «Y en esto sabemos que lo hemos llegado a conocer: si guardamos Sus mandamientos. Él que dice: «Yo lo he llegado a conocer», y no guarda Sus mandamientos, es un mentiroso y la verdad no está en él. Pero el que guarda Su palabra, en él verdaderamente se ha perfeccionado el amor de Dios. En esto sabemos que estamos en Él. El que dice que permanece en Él, debe andar como Él anduvo».

• 1 Juan 3:4-10: «Todo el que practica el pecado, practica también la infracción de la ley, pues el pecado es infracción de la ley. Ustedes saben que Cristo se manifestó a fin de quitar los pecados, y en Él no hay pecado. Todo el que permanece en Él, no peca. Todo el que peca, ni lo ha visto ni lo ha conocido. Hijos míos, que nadie los engañe. El que practica la justicia es justo, así como Él es justo. El que practica el pecado es del diablo, porque el diablo ha pecado desde el principio. El Hijo de Dios se manifestó con este propósito: para destruir las obras del diablo. Ninguno que es nacido de Dios practica el pecado, porque la simiente de Dios permanece en él. No puede pecar, porque es nacido de Dios. En esto se reconocen los hijos de Dios y los hijos del diablo: todo aquel que no practica la justicia, no es de Dios; tampoco aquel que no ama a su hermano».

• Mateo 7:15-23: «Cuídense de los falsos profetas, que vienen a ustedes con vestidos de ovejas, pero por dentro son lobos rapaces. Por sus frutos los conocerán. ¿Acaso se recogen uvas de los espinos o higos de los cardos? Así, todo árbol bueno da frutos buenos; pero el árbol malo da frutos malos. Un árbol bueno no puede producir frutos malos, ni un árbol malo producir frutos buenos. Todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y echado al fuego. Así que, por sus frutos los conocerán. »No todo el que me dice: “Señor, Señor”, entrará en el reino de los cielos, sino el que hace la voluntad de Mi Padre que está en los cielos. Muchos me dirán en aquel día: “Señor, Señor, ¿no profetizamos en Tu nombre, y en Tu nombre echamos fuera demonios, y en Tu nombre hicimos muchos milagros?”. Entonces les declararé: “Jamás los conocí; apártense de Mí, los que practican la iniquidad”».

• 1 Corintios 6:9-11: «¿O no saben que los injustos no heredarán el reino de Dios? No se dejen engañar: ni los inmorales, ni los idólatras, ni los adúlteros, ni los afeminados, ni los homosexuales, ni los ladrones, ni los avaros, ni los borrachos, ni los difamadores, ni los estafadores heredarán el reino de Dios. Y esto eran algunos de ustedes; pero fueron lavados, pero fueron santificados, pero fueron justificados en el nombre del Señor Jesucristo y en el Espíritu de nuestro Dios».

• Efesios 5:3-6: «Pero que la inmoralidad, y toda impureza o avaricia, ni siquiera se mencionen entre ustedes, como corresponde a los santos. Tampoco haya obscenidades, ni necedades, ni groserías, que no son apropiadas, sino más bien acciones de gracias. Porque con certeza ustedes saben esto: que ningún inmoral, impuro o avaro, que es idólatra, tiene herencia en el reino de Cristo y de Dios. Que nadie los engañe con palabras vanas, pues por causa de estas cosas la ira de Dios viene sobre los hijos de desobediencia».

• Juan 14:15, 21: «Si ustedes me aman, guardarán Mis mandamientos…El que tiene Mis mandamientos y los guarda, ese es el que me ama; y el que me ama será amado por Mi Padre; y Yo lo amaré y me manifestaré a él».

La Biblia enseña en los pasajes anteriores y en muchos otros lugares1 que la obediencia, las buenas obras y una vida justa son pruebas de que alguien ha confiado en Cristo y ha sido salvado. No somos salvados por las buenas obras ni por la obediencia, sino solo por la fe en Jesús; sin embargo, las buenas obras son el fruto de la fe. La fe se expresa a través del amor (Gálatas 5:6). Como dice el libro de Santiago:

«¿De qué sirve, hermanos míos, si alguien dice que tiene fe, pero no tiene obras? ¿Acaso puede esa fe salvarlo?... Así también la fe, por sí misma, si no tiene obras, está muerta. Pero alguien dirá: “Tú tienes fe y yo tengo obras”. Muéstrame tu fe sin las obras, y yo te mostraré mi fe por mis obras» (Santiago 2:14, 17-18).

La fe y las obras son como el fuego y la luz, o el ejercicio y el sudor. Siempre van de la mano porque una produce la otra. Así como el fuego produce luz y el ejercicio produce sudor, también la fe produce buenas obras. Pero, al igual que el sudor no es la causa del ejercicio y la luz no es la causa del fuego, tampoco las buenas obras son la causa de la salvación. Invertir el orden supondría un grave malentendido y una distorsión del evangelio.

Esta transformación en la vida de un cristiano no significa que ya no peque o que se vuelva perfecto tras aceptar a Cristo (1 Juan 1:8). Sin embargo, habrá un cambio evidente en su vida (2 Cor. 5:17). El creyente sigue pecando, pero la diferencia entre el creyente y el no creyente es que el creyente ahora odia el pecado, lucha contra él, se aflige por él y se arrepiente de él. Mientras que antes se lanzaba de buen grado al pecado, ahora tropieza con él a regañadientes (Romanos 7:14-20).

En 2 Corintios 13:5, Pablo le dice a la iglesia de Corinto: «Pónganse a prueba para ver si están en la fe. Examínense a sí mismos. ¿O no se reconocen a ustedes mismos de que Jesucristo está en ustedes, a menos de que en verdad no pasen la prueba?».

Aquí hay algunas preguntas que puede hacerse para comprobar la autenticidad de tu fe:

• ¿Forman parte de una iglesia local, como Dios nos ha mandado (Hebreos 10:24–25)?

• ¿Están viviendo en inmoralidad sexual (1 Tesalonicenses 4:3–8)?

• ¿Aman a Dios más que a cualquier otra cosa, incluso más que a sus seres más cercanos (Mateo 10:37)?

• ¿Aman a su prójimo como a sí mismos (Mateo 22:39)?

• ¿Guardan amargura o falta de perdón en su corazón (Mateo 18:34–35)?

El verdadero creyente se esforzará por obedecer estos y todos los mandamientos de Dios (Hebreos 12:14). Lo hará de forma imperfecta, pero sincera, porque ha sido transformado.

Si te declaras creyente y no ves evidencia de esta transformación en tu vidas, es posible que no seas verdaderamente salvo. Esto no significa que hayas perdido tu salvación — eso es imposible — sino más bien que, para empezar, nunca fuiste verdaderamente salvo. Si ese es el caso, Dios quiere que reconozcas tu verdadera condición y llegues al arrepentimiento y a la fe en Jesucristo (1 Corintios 6:9). Pero si hay evidencia de transformación en tu vida, ¡Dios quiere que tengas la seguridad de tu salvación y que te regocijes en ella (1 Juan 5:13)!

La pregunta más importante que una persona puede plantearse es: «¿Cómo puedo ser salvo?». Y la segunda pregunta más importante está estrechamente relacionada con ella: «¿Cómo puedo estar seguro de que soy salvo?». Jesús enseñó que, en última instancia, nada en esta vida tiene importancia si no somos salvos: «¿De qué le sirve a un hombre ganar el mundo entero y perder su alma?» (Marcos 8:36). Si perdemos nuestras almas en el infierno, entonces nada en esta vida tiene importancia. Por lo tanto, es de suma importancia que sepamos, en primer lugar, cómo ser salvos y, en segundo lugar, cómo estar seguros de que lo estamos. En este serie de dos, analizaremos las respuestas de la Biblia a ambas preguntas. En primer lugar…

¿Cómo puedo ser salvo?

La salvación significa ser salvado del juicio de Dios en el infierno. Recibimos la salvación al arrepentirnos y creer en el evangelio—la buena nueva de lo que Jesús ha hecho para salvarnos. Romanos 1:16 dice: «Porque no me avergüenzo del evangelio, pues es el poder de Dios para la salvación de todo el que cree». Jesús llamó a la gente a «arrepiéntanse y crean en el evangelio» (Marcos 1:15). A continuación se ofrece un resumen del evangelio utilizando la presentación «Dios, Hombre, Cristo, Respuesta»:

1. Dios: Dios es el Creador y Soberano del universo.

«En el principio Dios creó los cielos y la tierra» (Génesis 1:1). En otras palabras, Dios lo creó todo, incluidos nosotros. Nos creó para disfrutar de una relación con él y para glorificarle por su bondad hacia nosotros. Como Dios es el Creador de todas las cosas, merece nuestra adoración y obediencia. Apocalipsis 4:11 dice: «Digno eres, Señor y Dios nuestro, de recibir la gloria y el honor y el poder, porque Tú creaste todas las cosas, y por Tu voluntad existen y fueron creadas».

2. Hombre: somos pecadores y merecemos el juicio

¿Cuál es el mayor problema de la humanidad? Todo lo que va mal en nuestras vidas y en el mundo tiene su origen en nuestro problema más profundo: la rebelión contra Dios. Hemos rechazado a Dios como nuestro gobernante y hemos decidido adorar a la creación en lugar de al Creador. No honramos a Dios, ni le damos las gracias, ni le obedecemos como deberíamos. En cambio, hemos elegido vivir según nuestros propios deseos y valores, en lugar de los suyos. La Biblia llama a esto «pecado», y todos somos culpables de él. «Por cuanto todos pecaron y no alcanzan la gloria de Dios» (Romanos 3:23). El castigo por el pecado es el infierno: un tormento eterno y consciente. ¿Por qué es este el castigo? Porque Dios es infinitamente santo y, por lo tanto, el pecado contra Él merece un castigo infinito. La ira de Dios es proporcional a Su valor.

3. Cristo: Jesucristo es el único Salvador del pecado y del infierno

Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, vino a la tierra para salvarnos del pecado y del infierno. Él es a la vez Dios y hombre: plenamente humano y plenamente divino. Se hizo hombre para pagar la pena por el pecado en nombre de la humanidad, y tenía que ser Dios para que su muerte satisfaciera el castigo infinito que merecemos. Jesús murió en la cruz como nuestro sustituto, pagando la pena que merecemos por nuestra rebelión contra Dios. Luego, tres días después, resucitó de entre los muertos, demostrando que era quien decía ser: el Salvador del mundo. Como escribe Pablo: «Porque yo les entregué en primer lugar lo mismo que recibí: que Cristo murió por nuestros pecados, conforme a las Escrituras; que fue sepultado y que resucitó al tercer día, conforme a las Escrituras» (1 Cor. 15:3-4).

4. Respuesta: Debemos arrepentirnos y creer en Jesús

¿Cómo recibimos la salvación que Jesús nos ha proporcionado? Arrepintiéndonos y poniendo nuestra confianza en él. El arrepentimiento significa cambiar de rumbo, apartarnos de nuestra rebelión contra Dios. Cuando nos apartamos del pecado, nos volvemos hacia Jesús con fe, confiando en su muerte y resurrección para nuestra salvación. No podemos ganarnos la salvación con nuestras buenas obras —Jesús lo hizo todo—; simplemente la recibimos con las manos abiertas de la fe. En el momento en que te arrepientas de verdad y confíes en Jesús, serás salvo, ¡y entonces podrás vivir una vida de alegría y obediencia a Dios, en agradecimiento por lo que Él ha hecho por ti! «Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que cree en él, no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna» (Juan 3:16).

Justificación

Lo anterior es una breve explicación del evangelio de Jesucristo, el cual nos salva. Para comprender más plenamente cómo este evangelio nos salva, es necesario entender el concepto bíblico de la justificación.

La justificación está en el corazón del evangelio y significa ser declarado justo ante Dios. Nadie puede presentarse ante un Dios santo en su pecado. El pecado nos hace culpables ante Dios y merecedores de juicio. ¿Cómo entonces puede un pecador ser declarado justo? ¿Cómo puede Dios justificar a los pecadores? La respuesta está en lo que Jesucristo ha hecho por nosotros a través de su vida y muerte.

Cuando Dios nos perdona, no simplemente pasa por alto nuestros pecados ni los ignora. Tampoco nos perdona simplemente porque se lo pedimos. Eso sería injusto. Más bien, en su justicia, Dios envió a Jesús para pagar la penalidad por el pecado en nuestro nombre, satisfaciendo así las exigencias de la justicia. Y Dios no nos declara perfectamente justos basándose en nuestra propia justicia. Eso sería una mentira. En cambio, Jesús vivió la vida perfecta, cumpliendo la ley de Dios en nuestro lugar y ganándonos la justicia (Romanos 5:18-19). Por lo tanto, dice la Escritura, Dios puede ser a la vez «justo y el que justifica al que tiene fe en Jesús» (Romanos 3:26).

Otro término relacionado con la justificación es la imputación — un término teológico que se refiere a algo que se acredita o se cuenta a favor de otro. En la justificación, la vida y la muerte de Jesús son imputadas al creyente. La penalidad por el pecado que Jesús pagó en la cruz se cuenta a nuestro favor como si nosotros la hubiéramos pagado, y la vida perfecta que Jesús vivió se cuenta a nuestro favor como si nosotros la hubiéramos vivido. Por lo tanto, Dios puede justificar al que tiene fe en Jesús — declararlo justo — sobre la base de la perfecta justicia de Jesús y su muerte sustitutoria. Como dice 2 Corintios 5:21, “Al que no conoció pecado, lo hizo pecado por nosotros, para que fuéramos hechos justicia de Dios en Él.”

La fe Sola

La manera en que una persona recibe la justificación es a través de la fe en Jesucristo. Romanos 5:1 dice: “Por tanto, habiendo sido justificados por la fe, tenemos paz para con Dios por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.”

Pero no solo enseña la Biblia que la justificación es por la fe, sino que también enseña que somos justificados por la fe sola. No somos justificados por nuestras buenas obras, por el bautismo, ni por ninguna otra cosa que hagamos. La fe es el único medio instrumental por el cual somos justificados. Romanos 4:1-5 dice:

«¿Qué diremos, entonces, que halló Abraham, nuestro padre según la carne? Porque si Abraham fue justificado por las obras, tiene de qué jactarse, pero no para con Dios. Porque ¿qué dice la Escritura? «Y creyó Abraham a Dios, y le fue contado por justicia». Ahora bien, al que trabaja, el salario no se le cuenta como favor, sino como deuda; pero al que no trabaja, pero cree en Aquel que justifica al impío, su fe se le cuenta por justicia».

En resumen, somos salvos al arrepentirnos y creer en el evangelio de Jesucristo: su vida, muerte y resurrección. There is a difference between the questions “How can I be saved?” and “How can I be sure that I am saved?” An illustration I like to use to explain this difference is the difference between the questions “How does someone become a doctor?” and “How can we know whether someone is a doctor?”

How does someone become a doctor? By earning a bachelor’s degree, going to medical school, and completing a residency program. But this is different from how to determine whether someone is a doctor. You determine whether someone is a doctor by seeing their diplomas or medical license, or by seeing them working as a doctor in a hospital. Just as there is a difference between how to become a doctor and how to know whether someone is a doctor, there is a difference between how to become a Christian and how to know whether someone is a Christian.

You see, it isn’t enough that someone claims to be a Christian or claims to believe in Jesus. A profession of faith doesn’t mean that a person truly possesses faith. Faith isn’t visible to the eye, anyone can claim to have faith, but how do we know whether we — or someone else — possess faith? The primary answer the Bible gives for how we can know whether we are truly Christians is this: a transformed life.

When someone becomes a Christian, the moment they place their faith in Christ, two things happen that transform the way they live: they receive the Holy Spirit and they receive a new nature. Their new nature changes their heart and desires, causing them to now love what God loves and hate what God hates (John 3:3-8; 2 Pet. 1:4). And the Holy Spirit also produces in them the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal. 5:22-24). As Ezekiel 36:26-27 says,

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

Here are some passages of Scripture that teach that a true believer is recognized by a transformed life:

• 1 John 2:3-6: “And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”

• 1 John 3:4-10: “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”

• Matthew 7:15-23: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

• 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

• Ephesians 5:3-6: But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.”

• 2 Corinthians 13:5: “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”

The Bible teaches in the previous passages1 and many other places that obedience, good works, and righteous living are evidence that someone has trusted in Christ and been saved. We are not saved by good works or obedience, we are saved by faith alone in Jesus, but good works are the fruit of faith. Faith expresses itself through love (Gal. 5:6). As the book of James says:

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?...So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2:14,17-18).

Faith and works are like fire and light, or exercise and sweat. They always go together because one produces the other. Just as fire produces light and exercise produces sweat, so faith produces good works. But just as sweat is not the cause of exercise and light is not the cause of a fire, neither are good works the cause of salvation. To reverse the order would be a serious misunderstanding and distortion of the gospel.

This transformation in the life of a Christian doesn’t mean that they no longer sin or that they become perfect after they accept Christ (1 John 1:8). However, there will be an evident change in their life (2 Cor. 5:17). The believer still sins, but the difference between the believer and the unbeliever is that the believer now hates sin, fights against sin, sorrows over sin, and repents from sin. Whereas before they willingly dove into sin, now they reluctantly stumble into sin (Romans 7:14-20).

In 2 Corinthians 13:5, Paul says to the Corinthian church, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to test the genuineness of your faith:

• Are you involved in a local church, as God has commanded us to be (Hebrews 10:24-25)?

• Are you living in sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8)?

• Do you love God more than anything else, even those closest to you (Matthew 10:37)?

• Do you love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39)?

• Are you holding onto bitterness or unforgiveness in your heart (Matthew 18:34-35)?

The true believer will strive to obey these and all of God’s commandments (Hebrews 12:14). They will strive imperfectly, but genuinely, because they have been transformed.

If you are a professing believer and do not see the evidence of this transformation in your life, then you may not be truly saved. This does not mean that you have lost your salvation—that is impossible—but rather that you were never truly saved to begin with. If that’s the case, God wants you to recognize your true condition and come to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:9). But if there is evidence of transformation in your life, God wants you to have assurance of your salvation and to rejoice in it (1 John 5:13)!

The most important question a person can ask is “How can I be saved?” And the second most important question is closely related: “How can I be sure that I am saved?” Jesus taught that nothing in this life ultimately matters if we aren’t saved: “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36). If we lose our souls in hell, then nothing in this life matters. Therefore, it is of first importance that we know, first of all, how to be saved and, secondly, how to be sure that we are saved. In this two-part series, we will look at the Bible’s answers to both of these questions. First…

How Can I Be Saved?

Salvation means to be saved from God’s judgment in hell. We receive salvation by repenting and believing in the gospel—the good news of what Jesus has done to save us. Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Jesus called people to “repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Below is a summary of the gospel using the God, Man, Christ, Response presentation:

1. God – God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). In other words, God created everything – including us. He created us to enjoy a relationship with him and to glorify him for his goodness toward us. Because God is the Creator of all things, he deserves our worship and obedience. Revelation 4:11 says, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

2. Man – We are sinners, deserving of judgment

What is mankind’s greatest problem? Everything wrong in our lives and in the world stems from our deepest problem: rebellion against God. We have rejected God as our ruler and have decided to worship the creation rather than the Creator. We don’t honor God, thank him, or obey him as we should. Instead, we have chosen to live according to our own desires and values rather than his. The Bible calls this sin, and we are all guilty of it. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The punishment for sin is hell — eternal conscious torment. Why is this the punishment? Because God is infinitely holy, and therefore sin against him warrants infinite punishment. God’s wrath is proportional to God’s worth.

3. Christ – Jesus Christ is the only Savior from sin and hell

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to save us from sin and hell. He is both God and man — fully human and fully divine. He became man to pay the penalty for sin on behalf of mankind, and he had to be God in order for his death to satisfy the infinite punishment we deserve. Jesus died on the cross as our substitute, paying the penalty we deserve for our rebellion against God. Then, three days later, he rose from the grave, proving that he was who he claimed to be — the Savior of the world. As Paul writes, “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3-4).

4. Response – We must repent and believe in Jesus

How do we receive the salvation Jesus has provided? By repenting and putting our trust in him. Repentance means changing direction, turning away from our rebellion against God. When we turn from sin, we turn to Jesus in faith, trusting in his death and resurrection for our salvation. We cannot earn salvation by our good deeds - Jesus did it all - we simply receive it with the open hands of faith. The moment you truly repent and trust in Jesus, you will be saved, and you can then live a life of joy and obedience to God out of gratitude for what he has done for you! “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Justification

Above is a brief explanation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which saves us. In order to understand more fully how this gospel saves us, it is necessary to understand the biblical concept of justification.

Justification is at the heart of the gospel and means to be declared righteous, or just, before God. No one can stand before a holy God in their sin. Sin makes us guilty before God and deserving of judgment. How, then, can a sinner be declared righteous? How can God justify sinners? The answer is because of what Jesus Christ has done for us through his life and death.

When God forgives us, he doesn’t simply sweep our sins under the rug or wink at them. Nor does he forgive us merely because we ask him to. That would be unjust. Rather, in his justice, God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for sin on our behalf, satisfying the demands of justice. And God doesn’t declare us perfectly righteous on the basis of our own righteousness. That would be a lie. Instead, Jesus lived the perfect life, fulfilling God’s law on our behalf and meriting righteousness for us (Romans 5:18-19). Therefore, Scripture says, God is both “just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26).

Another term related to justification is imputation—a theological term that refers to something being credited to or counted toward another. In justification, Jesus’ life and death are imputed to the believer. The penalty for sin that Jesus paid on the cross is counted toward us as if we had paid it, and the perfect life Jesus lived is counted toward us as if we had lived it. Therefore, God can justify the one who has faith in Jesus – declare them righteous – on the basis of Jesus’ perfect righteousness and substitutionary death. As 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Faith Alone

The way a person receives justification is through faith in Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1 says, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

But not only does the Bible teach that justification is by faith; it also teaches that we are justified by faith alone. We are not justified by our good deeds, by baptism, or by anything else we do. Faith is the sole instrumental means by which we are justified. Romans 4:1–5 says:

“What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.’ Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.”

Through faith, we receive all of the benefits of what Christ has accomplished. On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished,” meaning that the work of redemption had been completed. We do not add to salvation by our good deeds; we simply receive it by faith alone. In fact, the Bible teaches that anyone who relies on their works for salvation nullifies the grace of God and cannot be saved:

• “Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.” Galatians 2:16

• I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” Galatians 2:16

• “You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.” Galatians 5:4

In summary, we are saved by repenting and believing in the gospel of Jesus Christ: his life, death, and resurrection. When you put your trust in what Christ has accomplished, his work of salvation is applied to you and you are justified before God. If you have never repented of your sins and trusted in Jesus alone for your salvation, then do so today before it is too late. Jesus offers salvation freely to all.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”” ‭‭John‬ ‭11‬:‭25‬-‭26‬

Hay aproximadamente 1.200 millones de católicos y 1.000 millones de protestantes en todo el mundo. En los Estados Unidos, aproximadamente el 40% de los estadounidenses se identifican como protestantes y el 20% como católicos. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre estos dos grupos cristianos?

La diferencia entre ellos se puede ver en el significado de la palabra protestante en sí misma. Protestante viene de la palabra protestar, y se refiere a la Reforma Protestante, cuando muchos miembros de la Iglesia Católica Romana protestaron contra ella porque creían que había comenzado a distorsionar el evangelio de Jesucristo. Entonces, ¿qué enseña la Iglesia Católica sobre la salvación y qué cree la iglesia protestante? La diferencia se puede resumir de esta manera: los católicos creen que una persona es salva por la fe en Jesús más las obras (el bautismo, los sacramentos, las buenas obras). Los protestantes creen que una persona es salva por la fe sola en Jesucristo.

Los protestantes y los católicos están de acuerdo en muchos temas importantes como la deidad de Cristo, la Santa Trinidad, el nacimiento virginal, y la muerte corporal y resurrección de Jesucristo. Pero cuando se trata del evangelio — el camino de la salvación — están en fuerte desacuerdo. Y digo fuerte porque ambos lados consideran que la comprensión del evangelio del otro es un evangelio falso.

Por ejemplo, esto es lo que dice el Concilio de Trento de la Iglesia Católica con respecto a la visión protestante de la justificación:

“Si alguno dijere que la fe justificante no es otra cosa que la confianza en la misericordia divina que perdona los pecados por amor de Cristo; o que esta confianza sola es la que nos justifica; sea anatema.” (Canon 12, Concilio de Trento).

Entonces, según el Concilio de Trento, los cristianos protestantes son anatema — es decir, condenados al infierno — ya que creen que son justificados por la fe sola. Y los protestantes, a su vez, creen que si una persona cree en la enseñanza católica de la salvación por obras, no puede ser salva. ¿Entonces quién tiene razón?

Esta es una pregunta muy importante — una que todo cristiano que lo profesa debería considerar cuidadosamente. No es suficiente que alguien diga que es católico simplemente porque creció siendo católico, ni tampoco debería alguien ser protestante simplemente porque creció siendo protestante. Debemos examinar las Escrituras para ver si las cosas que creemos están de acuerdo con ellas. Cuando uno examina fielmente las Escrituras, creemos firmemente que verá que la doctrina católica romana de la salvación por fe más obras no es el verdadero evangelio.

Aquí hay algunos pasajes de la Escritura que enseñan claramente que somos salvos por la fe, aparte de las obras:

• Efesios 2:8-9: “’Porque por gracia ustedes han sido salvados por medio de la fe, y esto no procede de ustedes, sino que es don de Dios; no por obras, para que nadie se gloríe.”

• 2 Timoteo 1:8-9: “Por tanto, no te avergüences del testimonio de nuestro Señor, ni de mí, prisionero Suyo, sino participa conmigo en las aflicciones por el evangelio, según el poder de Dios. Él nos ha salvado y nos ha llamado con un llamamiento santo, no según nuestras obras, sino según Su propósito y según la gracia que nos fue dada en Cristo Jesús desde la eternidad.”

• Tito 3:4-5: “Pero cuando se manifestó la bondad de Dios nuestro Salvador, y Su amor hacia la humanidad, Él nos salvó, no por las obras de justicia que nosotros hubiéramos hecho, sino conforme a Su misericordia, por medio del lavamiento de la regeneración y la renovación por el Espíritu Santo.”

• Gálatas 2:16: “Sabiendo que el hombre no es justificado por las obras de la ley, sino mediante la fe en Cristo Jesús, también nosotros hemos creído en Cristo Jesús, para que seamos justificados por la fe en Cristo, y no por las obras de la ley. Puesto que por las obras de la ley nadie será justificado.”

• Romanos 4:1-8: “’¿Qué diremos, entonces, que halló Abraham, nuestro padre según la carne? Porque si Abraham fue justificado por las obras, tiene de qué jactarse, pero no para con Dios. Porque ¿qué dice la Escritura? «Y creyó Abraham a Dios, y le fue contado por justicia». Ahora bien, al que trabaja, el salario no se le cuenta como favor, sino como deuda; pero al que no trabaja, pero cree en Aquel que justifica al impío, su fe se le cuenta por justicia. Como también David habla de la bendición que viene sobre el hombre a quien Dios atribuye justicia aparte de las obras: «Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades han sido perdonadas, y cuyos pecados han sido cubiertos. Bienaventurado el hombre cuyo pecado el Señor no tomará en cuenta».”

• Romanos 11:5-6: “Y de la misma manera, también ha quedado en el tiempo presente un remanente conforme a la elección de la gracia de Dios. Pero si es por gracia, ya no es a base de obras, de otra manera la gracia ya no es gracia. Y si por obras, ya no es gracia; de otra manera la obra ya no es obra.”

Contraste esto con la enseñanza católica de la salvación por buenas obras, el bautismo y los sacramentos:

• Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, párrafo 2027: “Nadie puede merecer la gracia inicial que está en el origen de la conversión. Movidos por el Espíritu Santo, podemos merecer para nosotros y para los demás todas las gracias necesarias para alcanzar la vida eterna, así como los bienes temporales necesarios.”

• CIC, 2068: “Los obispos, sucesores de los apóstoles, reciben del Señor... la misión de enseñar a todos los pueblos y de predicar el Evangelio a toda criatura, para que todos los hombres alcancen la salvación mediante la fe, el Bautismo y la observancia de los Mandamientos.”

• CIC, 1129: “La Iglesia afirma que para los creyentes los sacramentos de la Nueva Alianza son necesarios para la salvación.”

• CIC, 1263: “Por el Bautismo son perdonados todos los pecados, el pecado original y todos los pecados personales, así como todas las penas debidas al pecado.”

• CIC, 1861: “El pecado mortal... entraña la pérdida de la caridad y la privación de la gracia santificante, es decir, del estado de gracia. Si no es rescatado por el arrepentimiento y el perdón de Dios, causa la exclusión del reino de Cristo y la muerte eterna del infierno.”

La enseñanza católica romana de la salvación por obras es contraria a lo que la Biblia enseña sobre la salvación por la fe sola en Jesús. Y no solo es contraria a lo que la Biblia enseña, sino que la Biblia enseña que si una persona depende de sus obras para la salvación, no puede ser salva. El libro de Gálatas fue escrito para abordar un problema muy similar al que vemos en la iglesia católica. En las iglesias de Galacia, algunos enseñaban que la salvación requería la fe en Jesús más la obediencia a la ley del Antiguo Testamento de la circuncisión. Miren lo que dice Pablo sobre este “evangelio” en el que estaban siendo llevados a creer:

• Gálatas 1:6-9: “Me maravillo de que tan pronto ustedes hayan abandonado a Aquel que los llamó por la gracia de Cristo, para seguir un evangelio diferente, que en realidad no es otro evangelio, sino que hay algunos que los perturban a ustedes y quieren pervertir el evangelio de Cristo. Pero si aun nosotros, o un ángel del cielo, les anunciara otro evangelio contrario al que les hemos anunciado, sea anatema. Como hemos dicho antes, también repito ahora: Si alguien les anuncia un evangelio contrario al que recibieron, sea anatema.”

• Gálatas 2:21: “No hago nula la gracia de Dios, porque si la justicia viene por medio de la ley, entonces Cristo murió en vano.”

• Gálatas 3:10-11: “’Porque todos los que son de las obras de la ley están bajo maldición, pues escrito está: «Maldito todo el que no permanece en todas las cosas escritas en el libro de la ley, para hacerlas». Y que nadie es justificado ante Dios por la ley es evidente, porque «El justo vivirá por la fe».”

• Gálatas 5:3-5: “Otra vez testifico a todo hombre que se circuncida, que está obligado a cumplir toda la ley. De Cristo se han separado, ustedes que procuran ser justificados por la ley; de la gracia han caído. Pues nosotros, por medio del Espíritu, esperamos por la fe la esperanza de justicia.”

Al igual que las iglesias de Galacia, la Iglesia Católica Romana ha distorsionado el evangelio de Jesucristo al añadirle los méritos y los logros humanos. El asunto que divide a los católicos y a los protestantes no es un asunto menor. Es la diferencia entre el verdadero evangelio y un evangelio falso, entre el cielo y el infierno.

Si eres católico romano y has estado confiando en tus obras para la salvación, arrepiéntete de tu autosuficiencia y apóyate completamente en Jesucristo para tu salvación. Nunca podríamos ser lo suficientemente buenos para ganarnos el favor de Dios, y no tenemos que serlo. Jesús ha logrado todo lo necesario para nuestra salvación en su vida, muerte, y resurrección. Jesús dijo en la cruz: “Consumado es,” porque la obra de la redención ha sido completada. Lo único que tenemos que hacer es recibir el don gratuito de la salvación por la fe.

¿Qué hay de las buenas obras? ¿Qué papel desempeñan en la vida cristiana? Cuando una persona verdaderamente confía en Cristo, hará buenas obras como gratitud por su salvación y amor por Dios. Hace buenas obras porque ha sido salva, no para ser salva. Esa es una diferencia crucial. Esa es la diferencia entre el legalismo y el evangelio de la gracia. Si un cristiano que lo profesa no hace buenas obras, eso muestra que nunca ha puesto verdaderamente su fe en Cristo y no es verdaderamente salvo, porque la fe genuina produce buenas obras. Las buenas obras son el fruto de la fe (Mateo 7:15-23; Santiago 2:14-26).

¡Qué buena noticia es saber que no tenemos que ganarnos la salvación sino que Cristo la ha ganado por nosotros! Él es nuestro Salvador. “Por tanto, habiendo sido justificados por la fe, tenemos paz para con Dios por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo” (Romanos 5:1).

The two largest Christian groups in the world are Catholics and Protestants. There are approximately 1.2 billion Catholics and 1 billion Protestants worldwide. In the United States, about 40% of Americans identify as Protestant and 20% as Catholic. What is the difference between these two Christian groups?

The difference between them can be seen in the meaning of the word Protestant itself. Protestant comes from the word protest, and refers to the Protestant Reformation, when many members of the Roman Catholic Church protested against it because they believed it had begun to distort the gospel of Jesus Christ. So Protestants, then, are those who broke with the Catholic Church over its teachings, especially its teachings concerning salvation and the gospel.

It should be noted that Protestantism has within it many denominations, such as Baptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, etc. But the reason they can all come under the umbrella term Protestant is because they all share an understanding of salvation/the gospel. They may disagree on secondary issues, but when it comes to “how to be saved” they are in agreement.

So then, what does the Catholic Church teach about salvation and what does the Protestant church believe? The difference can be summarized this way: Catholics believe a person is saved by faith in Jesus + works (baptism, the sacraments, good deeds). Protestants believe that a person is saved by faith alone in Jesus Christ.

Protestants and Catholics agree on many important issues like the deity of Christ, the Holy Trinity, the virgin birth, and the bodily death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But when it comes to the gospel—the way of salvation—they sharply disagree. And I say sharply because both sides consider the other’s understanding of the gospel to be a false gospel.

For example, this is what the Catholic Council of Trent says regarding the Protestant view of justification:

“If any one saith, that justifying faith is nothing else but confidence in the divine mercy which remits sins for Christ’s sake; or, that this confidence alone is that whereby we are justified; let him be anathema.” (Canon 12, Council of Trent)

So according to the Council of Trent, Protestant Christians are anathema, that is, condemned to hell, since they believe they are justified by faith alone. And Protestants, in turn, believe that if a person believes in the Catholic teaching of salvation by works, they cannot be saved. So who is right?

This is a very important question—one that every professing Christian should carefully consider. It is not enough for someone to say they are Catholic simply because they grew up Catholic, nor should someone be Protestant simply because they grew up Protestant. The Bible repeatedly warns against false teaching and instructs believers to test all things against the Scriptures (Acts 20:29-30; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). This is what the noble Bereans did when Paul came to them preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” (Acts 17:10-11)

We must examine the Scriptures to see if the things we believe are in agreement with Scripture. When one faithfully examines the Scriptures, we strongly believe that they will see that the Roman Catholic doctrine of salvation by faith plus works is not the true gospel.

Here are some passages of Scripture that clearly teach that we are saved by faith, apart from works:

• Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

• 2 Timothy 1:8-9: “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.”

• Titus 3:4-5: “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.”

• Galatians 2:16: “Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.”

• Romans 4:1-8: “What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

• Romans 11:5-6: “So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.”

Contrast this with the Catholic teaching of salvation by good works, baptism, and the sacraments:

• Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2027: “No one can merit the initial grace which is at the origin of conversion. Moved by the Holy Spirit, we can merit for ourselves and for others all the graces needed to attain eternal life, as well as necessary temporal goods.”

• CCC, 2068: “The bishops, successors of the apostles, receive from the Lord ... the mission of teaching all peoples, and of preaching the Gospel to every creature, so that all men may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the Commandments.”

• CCC, 1129: “The Church affirms that for believers the sacraments of the New Covenant are necessary for salvation.”

• CCC, 1263: “By Baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin.”

• CCC, 1861: “Mortal sin ... results in the loss of charity and the privation of sanctifying grace, that is, of the state of grace. If it is not redeemed by repentance and God’s forgiveness, it causes exclusion from Christ’s kingdom and the eternal death of hell.”

The Roman Catholic teaching of salvation by works is contrary to what the Bible teaches about salvation by faith alone in Jesus. And not only is it contrary to what the Bible teaches, but the Bible teaches that if a person relies on their works for salvation, they cannot be saved. The book of Galatians was written to address a problem very similar to the one we see in the Catholic Church. In the churches of Galatia, some were teaching that salvation required faith in Jesus plus obedience to the Old Testament law of circumcision. Look at what Paul says about this “gospel” they were being led to believe:

• Galatians 1:6-9: “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.”

• Galatians 2:21: “I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.”

• Galatians 3:10-11: “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”

• Galatians 5:3-5: “I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.”

Just like the churches of Galatia, the Roman Catholic Church has distorted the gospel of Jesus Christ by adding human merit and achievement to it. The issue that divides Catholics and Protestants is no minor matter. It is the difference between the true gospel and a false gospel, between heaven and hell.

If you are a Roman Catholic and have been trusting in your works for salvation then repent from your self-reliance and lean wholly on Jesus Christ for your salvation. We could never be good enough to earn God’s favor and we don’t have to be. Jesus has accomplished everything necessary for our salvation in his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished,” because the work of redemption has been completed. All we have to do is receive the free gift of salvation by faith.

What about good works? What role do they play in the Christian life? When a person truly trusts in Christ, they will do good works out of gratitude for their salvation and love for God. They do good works because they have been saved not in order to be saved. That is a crucial difference. That is the difference between legalism and the gospel of grace. If a professing Christian does not do good works it shows that they have never truly put their faith in Christ and are not truly saved, because genuine faith produces good works. Good works are the fruit of faith (Matthew 7:15-32; James 2:14-26).

What good news it is to know that we do not have to earn salvation but that Christ has earned it for us! He is our Savior. “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

Una crítica común a Sola Scriptura es: «Los protestantes deben basarse en tradiciones extra bíblicas para saber qué libros pertenecen a las Escrituras; por lo tanto, no dependen únicamente de las Escrituras».

El argumento es que, dado que la Biblia no contiene un índice con la lista de sus propios libros, los protestantes deben basarse en algo ajeno a las Escrituras para saber qué escritos están verdaderamente inspirados. Los críticos sostienen que ese «algo» es la tradición de la iglesia primitiva, que reconoció, recopiló y transmitió los libros canónicos. Jonathan Edwards lo explica bien: «¿Qué razón se puede ofrecer en contra de esto, a menos que argumentemos que Dios no se distingue notablemente en gloria de los hombres?… Cuando un hombre sabio habla en el ejercicio de su sabiduría, hay algo en todo lo que dice que se distingue mucho del habla de un niño pequeño. Así que, sin duda, y mucho más, el discurso de Dios se distingue del de los hombres más sabios, de acuerdo con Jeremías 23:28-29: «El profeta que tenga un sueño, que cuente su sueño, pero el que tenga Mi palabra, que hable Mi palabra con fidelidad. ¿Qué tiene que ver la paja con el grano?», declara el Señor. «¿No es Mi palabra como fuego», declara el Señor , «y como martillo que despedaza la roca?».

Además de esto, el Espíritu Santo da testimonio de la inspiración de las Escrituras abriendo nuestros ojos a sus atributos divinos. Esto se conoce como iluminación, o el testimonio interior del Espíritu Santo. Esto no significa que el Espíritu nos susurre al oído: «Estás leyendo la palabra de Dios». Tampoco se trata de mero subjetivismo, como si la fe se basara en una cálida sensación difusa. Más bien, significa que cuando escuchamos o leemos la palabra de Dios, el Espíritu Santo nos abre los ojos a la sabiduría, la belleza, el poder y las perfecciones divinas verdaderas y objetivas que contiene.1

Vemos esto claramente enseñado en las Escrituras. He aquí algunos ejemplos:

2 Corintios 3:15-18: «Y hasta el día de hoy, cada vez que se lee a Moisés, un velo está puesto sobre sus corazones. Pero cuando alguien se vuelve al Señor, el velo es quitado. Ahora bien, el Señor es el Espíritu; y donde está el Espíritu del Señor, hay libertad. Pero todos nosotros, con el rostro descubierto, contemplando como en un espejo la gloria del Señor, estamos siendo transformados en la misma imagen de gloria en gloria, como por el Señor, el Espíritu». El Espíritu quita el velo de nuestros ojos para que podamos contemplar la gloria del Señor en la Palabra.

2 Corintios 4:4,6: «El dios de este mundo ha cegado el entendimiento de los incrédulos, para que no vean el resplandor del evangelio de la gloria de Cristo, que es la imagen de Dios…Pues Dios, que dijo: «De las tinieblas resplandecerá la luz», es el que ha resplandecido en nuestros corazones, para iluminación del conocimiento de la gloria de Dios en el rostro de Cristo». Dios nos quita las vendas, rompe las tinieblas, para que podamos ver su gloria en el evangelio como si estuviéramos contemplando la majestad del mismo Dios.

1 Corintios 2:13-14: «De lo cual también hablamos, no con palabras enseñadas por sabiduría humana, sino con las enseñadas por el Espíritu, combinando pensamientos espirituales con palabras espirituales . Pero el hombre natural no acepta las cosas del Espíritu de Dios, porque para él son necedad; y no las puede entender, porque son cosas que se disciernen espiritualmente». Las cosas del Espíritu —«verdades espirituales» (v. 13)— solo pueden ser entendidas y aceptadas por aquellos que son «espirituales», es decir, aquellos que han sido habitados por el Espíritu Santo.

Juan 10:27: «Mis ovejas oyen Mi voz; Yo las conozco y me siguen» (Juan 10:27). El Espíritu Santo nos concede oír la voz de Jesús en las Escrituras, y por eso creemos y le seguimos. Esto es similar a cómo el Padre concedió a Pedro creer la verdad de que Jesús era el Cristo en Mateo 16:13-17.

Juan 1:14: «El Verbo se hizo carne, y habitó entre nosotros, y vimos Su gloria, gloria como del unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad». Así como los discípulos vieron la gloria de Jesús en el Verbo vivo, nosotros vemos la gloria de Jesús en la palabra escrita y creemos.

Así, la Biblia se prueba a sí misma por sus propias cualidades y atributos divinos, y el Espíritu Santo confirma aún más esta realidad al creyente. Y así como aquellos que no perciben los atributos invisibles de Dios en la creación no tienen excusa (Romanos 1:18-20), tampoco tendrán excusa aquellos que niegan la majestuosa gloria y los atributos divinos de su palabra. «El que tiene oídos para oír, que oiga».

A common critique of Sola Scriptura is: “Protestants must rely on extra-biblical tradition to know which books belong in Scripture; therefore, they don’t depend on Scripture alone.”

The argument goes that since the Bible itself does not contain a table of contents listing its own books, Protestants must rely on something outside of Scripture to know which writings are truly inspired. Critics argue that this “something” is the tradition of the early church, which recognized, collected, and passed down the canonical books. Therefore, they conclude that Protestants can’t consistently hold to Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) because their very knowledge of which books are Scripture depends on trusting the authority and reliability of the church’s decision.

However, this is not true, because Scripture is self-authenticating. Scripture attests to its divine origin and inspiration through the divine attributes contained within it. Just as creation (natural revelation) attests to God being its Creator (Rom. 1:18-20), so Scripture (special revelation) attests to God being its Author. God’s fingerprints both in creation and Scripture point to their divine origin.

Jonathan Edwards explains it well: “What reason can be offered against this, unless we would argue that God is not remarkably distinguished in glory from men?…When a wise man speaks in the exercise of his wisdom, there is something in everything he says that is very distinguishable from the talk of a little child. So, without doubt, and much more, is the speech of God to be distinguished from that of the wisest of men; agreeably to Jeremiah 23:28-29: ‘Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord. Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?’”

In addition to this, the Holy Spirit further testifies to the inspiration of Scripture by opening our eyes to its divine attributes. This is known as illumination, or the inner testimony of the Holy Spirit. This doesn’t mean that the Spirit whispers in our ears, “you are reading the word of God.” Nor is this mere subjectivism, as though faith were based on a warm fuzzy feeling. Rather, it means that when we hear or read the word of God, the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the true and objective wisdom, beauty, power, and divine perfections contained within it.1

We see this clearly taught in Scripture. Here are just a few examples:

2 Corinthians 3:15-18: “Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” The Spirit removes the veil from our eyes so that we can behold the glory of the Lord in the Word.

2 Corinthians 4:4,6: “The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God…God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” God takes the blinders off, he shatters the darkness, so that we can see his glory in the gospel as if we were gazing upon the majesty of God himself.

1 Corinthians 2:13-14: “And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” The things of the Spirit — “spiritual truths” (v.13) — can only be understood and accepted by those who are ‘spiritual,’ that is, those who have been indwell by the Holy Spirit.

John 10:27: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). The Holy Spirit grants us to hear the voice of Jesus in Scripture, and that's why we believe and follow him. This is similar to how the Father granted Peter to believe the truth that Jesus was the Christ in Matt. 16:13-17.

John 1:14: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” As the disciples saw the glory of Jesus in the living Word, we see the glory of Jesus in the written word and believe.

Thus, the Bible proves itself by its own divine qualities and attributes, and the Holy Spirit further confirms this reality to the believer. And just as those who fail to perceive God’s invisible attributes in creation are without excuse (Rom. 1:18-20), so too will those be without excuse who deny the majestic glory and divine attributes of his word. “He who has ears to hear let him hear.”

Esta pregunta es válida y convincente para muchos. De hecho, una de las principales razones por las que las personas se convierten al catolicismo o a la ortodoxia oriental es porque les resulta inverosímil que la Iglesia haya podido desviarse tanto durante tanto tiempo. Sin embargo, como protestante, este argumento no me convence por las siguientes razones:

𝟭. Sola Scriptura

La palabra de Dios es la autoridad suprema, no la tradición humana. Jesús reprendió a los líderes judíos por poner la tradición por encima de la Escritura: “Dejando el mandamiento de Dios, ustedes se aferran a la tradición de los hombres” (Marcos 7:8).

Asimismo, Pablo advirtió que incluso si un ángel o un apóstol predicara un evangelio contrario a la Escritura, deberían ser rechazados: “Pero si aun nosotros, o un ángel del cielo, les anunciara otro evangelio contrario al que les hemos anunciado, sea anatema” (Gálatas 1:8).

Los bereanos fueron elogiados por examinar la enseñanza del apóstol Pablo con la Escritura: “Enseguida los hermanos enviaron de noche a Pablo y a Silas a Berea, los cuales, al llegar, fueron a la sinagoga de los judíos. Estos eran más nobles que los de Tesalónica, pues recibieron la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando diariamente las Escrituras, para ver si estas cosas eran así.” (Hechos 17:10-11).

La historia bíblica muestra que, debido a la corrupción, el pueblo de Dios ha atravesado períodos sin acceso completo a la Escritura —como los aproximadamente 75 años en que el Libro de la Ley se perdió en el Templo (2 Reyes 22–23). De manera similar, la Iglesia Católica Romana históricamente restringió el acceso de los laicos a la Biblia, contribuyendo a la prolongada distorsión del evangelio. Los Reformadores buscaron terminar con esto al traducir la Biblia al idioma vernacular, liberando la verdad de Dios en el mundo.

Como declaró Isaías: ““¡A la ley y al testimonio! Si ellos no hablan conforme a esta palabra, es porque no hay para ellos amanecer” (Isaías 8:20).

𝟮. La claridad de la Escritura

Alguien podría responder: “No confiamos en la tradición, también confiamos en la palabra de Dios, pero es difícil de entender, por lo tanto tenemos obispos, concilios y tradición que nos ayudan a clarificarla.” A eso decimos: ¿Acaso Dios no puede comunicarse claramente? El Creador del lenguaje es capaz de usarlo clara y efectivamente.

Jesús creía esto, por eso su pregunta más frecuente en los Evangelios era: “¿No han leído?” (Mat. 12:3, 5; 19:4; 21:42; 22:31; 9:13; Juan 3:10; 22:29; Lucas 24:25). Jesús esperaba que quienes leyeran las Escrituras con fidelidad las entendieran. Nunca culpó a la Escritura por malentendidos; más bien, la culpa la atribuía a quienes la malinterpretaban. Creer en esto no es una sobreconfianza en la capacidad humana para interpretar, sino confianza en la capacidad de Dios para comunicar.

𝟯. Numerosas advertencias sobre falsos maestros

No debemos sorprendernos de que a lo largo de la historia de la iglesia hayan surgido falsos maestros e iglesias. La Biblia advierte y predice esto repetidamente, y ya vemos muchos ejemplos en tiempos de los apóstoles: “Amados, no crean a todo espíritu, sino prueben los espíritus para ver si son de Dios, porque muchos falsos profetas han salido al mundo” (1 Juan 4:1).

La prevalecencia de falsas enseñanzas no es un fracaso inesperado en el plan de Dios, sino el cumplimiento de sus advertencias, mostrando nuestra necesidad constante de “examinarlo todo” con la Escritura (1 Tes. 5:21; véase también Deut. 13:1-3; Jer. 5:30–31; 14:14–15; Mat. 7:15–20; 24:4-5, 11, 24; Hechos 20:28–31; Rom. 16:17–18; 2 Cor. 2:17; 11:3–4; 11:13–15; Gál. 1:6–9; 2:4; Efes. 4:14; Fil. 3:2; Col. 2:8; 1 Tim. 1:3–7; 4:1–3; 6:3–5; 2 Tim. 2:16–19; 3:13; 4:3–4; Tito 1:10–16; 3:9–11; Heb. 13:9; 2 Ped. 2:1–3; 3:16–17; 1 Juan 2:18–26; 4:1–6; 2 Juan 1:7–11; Jud. 1:3–19; Apoc. 2:2; 2:14–15; 2:20; 13:11–18).

No solo hay fuerzas humanas malignas en acción, sino que Satanás mismo concentra sus mayores esfuerzos en destruir la iglesia de Cristo: “Porque no tenemos lucha contra sangre y carne, sino contra principados, contra potestades, contra los gobernadores de las tinieblas de este siglo, contra huestes espirituales de maldad en las regiones celestes” (Efesios 6:12).

La Biblia habla de las “enseñanzas de demonios” (1 Tim. 4:1). Una de las maneras principales en que Satanás trabaja para destruir la iglesia es causando error doctrinal, división y confusión en ella. Un ejemplo sorprendente de esto—y uno de los engaños más exitosos de Satanás—se encuentra en la Iglesia Católica Romana (con la Iglesia Ortodoxa Oriental no muy lejos detrás).1 Sin embargo, no debemos sorprendernos de un engaño tan grande, porque Satanás hizo lo mismo en los días de Jesús cuando corrompió todo el establecimiento religioso de Israel. Pablo describió esta trágica realidad:

“¿Qué diremos entonces? Que los gentiles, que no iban tras la justicia, alcanzaron justicia, es decir, la justicia que es por fe; pero Israel, que iba tras una ley de justicia, no alcanzó esa ley. ¿Por qué? Porque no iban tras ella por fe, sino como por obras. Tropezaron en la piedra de tropiezo, tal como está escrito: ‘Miren, pongo en Sión una piedra de tropiezo y roca de escándalo; Y el que crea en Él no será avergonzado’. Hermanos, el deseo de mi corazón y mi oración a Dios por ellos es para su salvación. Porque yo testifico a su favor de que tienen celo de Dios, pero no conforme a un pleno conocimiento. Pues desconociendo la justicia de Dios y procurando establecer la suya propia, no se sometieron a la justicia de Dios. Porque Cristo es el fin de la ley para justicia a todo aquel que cree.” (Rom. 9:30-10:4; véase también Mat. 5:20, 16:5-12, 23:13-15; Luc. 18:9-14).

𝟱. Dios siempre ha preservado un remanente fiel

¿Por qué deberíamos creer algo que nadie o muy pocos creyeron durante 1,500 años? La respuesta es sencilla: Dios siempre ha preservado un remanente fiel que cree el evangelio verdadero. Jesús prometió: “Edificaré mi iglesia, y las puertas del Hades no prevalecerán contra ella” (Mat. 16:18). Cristo garantizó la edificación y preservación de su iglesia, y podemos confiar en su palabra de que lo ha hecho a lo largo de la historia.2

¿Significa esto que los verdaderos creyentes siempre fueron la mayoría? No. El pueblo de Dios a menudo ha estado en minoría. Pablo, hablando del endurecimiento de Israel en su tiempo, señaló la época de Elías: “Digo entonces: ¿Acaso ha desechado Dios a Su pueblo? ¡De ningún modo! Porque yo también soy israelita, descendiente de Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamín. Dios no ha desechado a Su pueblo, al cual conoció con anterioridad. ¿O no saben lo que dice la Escritura en el pasaje sobre Elías, cómo suplica a Dios contra Israel: ‘Señor, han dado muerte a Tus profetas, han derribado Tus altares; y solo yo he quedado y atentan contra mi vida?’. Pero, ¿qué le dice la respuesta divina?: ‘Me he reservado siete mil hombres que no han doblado la rodilla a Baal’. Y de la misma manera, también ha quedado en el tiempo presente un remanente conforme a la elección de la gracia de Dios” (Rom. 11:1-5). De igual manera, a lo largo de la historia de la iglesia Dios ha preservado un remanente por su gracia.

Pablo también comparó el remanente de judíos creyentes en su tiempo con los que fueron salvados físicamente de la destrucción en tiempos de Isaías: “Isaías también exclama en cuanto a Israel: ‘Aunque el número de los hijos de Israel sea como la arena del mar, solo el remanente será salvo; porque el Señor ejecutará Su palabra sobre la tierra cabalmente y con brevedad’. Y como Isaías predijo: ‘Si el Señor de los ejércitos no nos hubiera dejado descendencia, Hubiéramos llegado a ser como Sodoma, y hechos semejantes a Gomorra’” (Rom. 9:27-29).

Ya sea que nos encontremos en la minoría, como a lo largo de gran parte de la historia, o en la mayoría, como hoy en día, nuestra confianza descansa en la palabra de Dios: “Que Dios sea verdad, aunque todo hombre sea mentiroso” (Rom. 3:4).

This question is valid and compelling to many. In fact, one of the main reasons why people convert to Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy is that they find it implausible that the Church could have strayed so significantly for so long. However, as a Protestant, I find this argument unconvincing for the following reasons:

𝟭. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮

God’s word is the supreme authority, not human tradition. Jesus rebuked the Jewish leaders for placing tradition above Scripture: “You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men” (Mark 7:8).

Likewise, Paul warned that even if an angel or an apostle preached a gospel contrary to Scripture they should be rejected: “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8).

The Bereans were commended for testing the apostle Paul’s teaching against Scripture: “The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:10-11).

Biblical history shows that due to corruption God's people have endured seasons without full access to Scripture - such as the roughly 75 years when the Book of the Law was lost in the Temple (2 Kings 22–23). Similarly, the Roman Catholic Church historically restricted lay access to the Bible, contributing to the prolonged distortion of the gospel. The Reformers sought to end this by translating the Bible into the vernacular, reforming the church according to God’s truth.

As Isaiah declared, “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn” (Isaiah 8:20).

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

Someone might respond, “We don’t trust in tradition, we also trust in God’s word, but it is hard to understand, and therefore we have bishops, councils, and tradition to help clarify it for us.” To that we respond: Can God not communicate clearly? The Creator of language is able to use it clearly and effectively.

Jesus believed this, which is why his most frequent question in the Gospels was: “Have you not read?” (Matt. 12:3, 5, Matt. 19:4; Matt. 21:42; Matt. 22:31; Matt. 9:13; John 3:10; Matt. 22:29; Luke 24:25). Jesus expected that those who read the Scriptures faithfully would understand them. He never blamed Scripture for misunderstanding; rather, he placed the fault on those misreading it. Believing in this is not an overconfidence in human ability to interpret, but confidence in God’s ability to communicate.

𝟯. 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀

We should not be surprised that false teachers and churches have appeared throughout church history. The Bible repeatedly warns of this and predicts this, and we see many examples already in the time of the apostles: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone into the world” (1 John 4:1).

The prevalence of false teaching is not an unexpected failure in God’s plan but a fulfillment of His warnings, showing our need to constantly “test all things” by Scripture (1 Thess. 5:21; see also, Deut. 13:1-3; Jer. 5:30–31; 14:14–15; Matt. 7:15–20; 24:4-5, 11, 24; Acts 20:28–31; Rom. 16:17–18; 2 Cor. 2:17; 11:3–4; 11:13–15; Gal. 1:6–9; 2:4; Eph. 4:14; Phil. 3:2; Col. 2:8; 1 Tim. 1:3–7; 4:1–3; 6:3–5; 2 Tim. 2:16–19; 3:13; 4:3–4; Titus 1:10–16; 3:9–11; Heb. 13:9; 2 Pet. 2:1–3; 3:16–17; 1 John 2:18–26; 4:1–6; 2 John 1:7–11; Jude 1:3–19; Rev. 2:2; 2:14–15; 2:20; 13:11–18).

𝟰. 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻

Not only are there evil human forces at work, Satan himself focuses his greatest efforts on destroying Christ’s Church: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

The Bible speaks of the “teachings of demons” (1 Tim. 4:1). One of the primary ways that Satan works to destroy the church is by causing doctrinal error, division, and confusion among her. A striking example of this—and one of Satan’s most successful deceptions—is found in the Roman Catholic Church (with Eastern Orthodoxy not far behind).1 Yet we should not be surprised by such a massive deception, for Satan did the same in Jesus’ day when he corrupted the entire religious establishment of Israel. Paul described this tragic reality:

“What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’ Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (Romans 9:30-10:4; see also, Matt. 5:20, 16:5-12, 23:13-15; Luke 18:9-14).

𝟱. 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁

Why should we believe something that no one or few people believed for 1,500 years? The answer is simple: God has always preserved a faithful remnant who believe the true gospel. Jesus promised, “I will build my church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18). Christ guaranteed the building and preservation of his church, and we can trust his word that he has done so throughout history.2

Does this mean true believers were always the majority? No. God’s people have often been in the minority. Paul, addressing the hardening of Israel in his day, pointed to Elijah’s time: “I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? ‘Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.’ But what is God’s reply to him? ‘I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’ So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace” (Romans 11:1-5). In the same way, throughout church history God has preserved a remnant by his grace.

Paul also compared the remnant of believing Jews in his day to those physically saved from destruction in Isaiah’s day: “And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: ‘Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved,’ for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay. And as Isaiah predicted, ‘If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring, we would have been like Sodom and become like Gomorrah’” (Romans 9:27-29).

Whether we find ourselves in the minority as throughout much of history, or in the majority as we do today, our confidence rests in the word of God: “let God be true though every man be found a liar” (Rom. 3:4).
