You absolutely do not need an expensive lifestyle to have an incredible sex life. Some of the best things for intimacy are completely free: presence, time, communication, touch, curiosity.

But after 15 years working as a sexologist - and 44 years being a woman - there are a few things related to sex that I genuinely think are worth spending money on.

Here are mine.

1. Anything you want

Okay, slightly tongue-in-cheek. 😏 But I also mean it!

There’s something incredibly liberating about knowing what you want and allowing yourself to have it, rather than constantly questioning whether you should want it.

I think we could all benefit from becoming a little more honest about our desires - sexually and otherwise.

2. Really, really good quality bedding

I’m a 100% flax linen woman.

We spend a huge portion of our lives in bed. It’s where we sleep, rest, cuddle, talk, make love, reconnect and sometimes have the conversations that change everything.

I want my bedroom to feel like a sanctuary and my bed to feel beautiful against my skin. Good linen gets softer with age, lasts for years and makes the everyday ritual of getting into bed feel a little more luxurious.

3. Premium lube

Your intimate products are not the place to cheap out!

I’m always surprised by how little attention people pay to the ingredients in products they’re putting on some of the most sensitive tissue of their body.

Good lube can make sex more comfortable, pleasurable and playful - whether you need it or not. And needing lube is certainly nothing to feel embarrassed about.

4. Anything that helps you embrace + accept your true sexual essence

This might be books. Courses. Workshops. Sexology. Tantra. Retreats. Working with a practitioner or learning from a great teacher.

People often ask me what destroys relationships. They’re expecting me to say affairs, or poor communication, or children, or mismatched libidos - and sure, those things can create real challenges. But after more than 14 years working as a sexologist and relationship coach, the biggest mistake is way simpler than any of that: people stop investing in their relationship.

We live in a world that constantly encourages us to improve ourselves. We invest in our careers, we hire business coaches, we go to the gym, we listen to health podcasts, read books about money, spend thousands of dollars renovating our homes. And yet the relationship we say is one of the most important parts of our life often gets whatever energy is left over at the end of the day.

And often, we assume love will carry us. But it won’t. Love is the foundation - but it isn’t the whole house. A thriving relationship requires attention, skill, curiosity and devotion. That’s why I highly recommend couples to stop doing these six things:

Stop putting your relationship last.

Your children matter. Your career matters. Your friendships matter. But if your relationship is always at the bottom of the list, don’t be surprised when the connection starts to fade. Relationships don’t thrive on leftovers. Full stop.

Stop waiting until something feels broken.

Most couples seek help when they're barely having sex, constantly arguing, or one person is already halfway out the door. But a musician doesn't wait until they've forgotten how to play before they pick up the instrument again. They practise consistently and master it, even when nothing feels urgent - because that's what keeps mastery alive. Your relationship deserves the same devotion!

Stop expecting sexual chemistry to maintain itself.

One of the biggest myths we’ve been sold is that chemistry either exists or it doesn’t. I don’t believe that’s true. Attraction is something you create - through presence, through play, through novelty, through curiosity. It isn’t passive.

Stop having the same conversations. 🥱

Many couples spend years discussing logistics: who’s picking up the kids, what’s for dinner, have you paid the electricity bill. Important conversations, yes - but they’re not the conversations that create intimacy. Talk about your fantasies, your fears, your dreams, the version of yourselves you’re both becoming. That’s where relationships become alive again.

Stop expecting your partner to read your mind.

They’re your partner, not your psychic. One of the sexiest skills you can develop is learning to clearly communicate what you desire - not through criticism, not through hints, but through honesty.

Stop thinking love is enough.

Love matters deeply, but so does communication, emotional maturity, self-awareness, erotic intelligence, and the willingness to keep learning. Long-term love isn’t sustained by feelings alone. It’s sustained by the choices you make every day.

Which brings me to one final point: please stop hoping your sex life will magically get better. It won’t. Not because anything is wrong with you, but because great sex, like anything worthwhile, is a craft. You learn it. You practise it. You devote yourself to it. The couples with the deepest intimacy aren’t necessarily the most compatible. They’re the ones who never stop learning each other.

We started out as besties and soon fell in love. It was the kind of love that builds a whole life around it - we shared similar values, we laughed constantly, which has always mattered to me. We moved in together, adopted a dog, parented my daughter together, and started planning a family of our own. She was charismatic, generous and intelligent.

And for a long time, I told myself that was enough.

But if I’m honest - something always felt like it was missing. Right from the start.

At the time, I explained it away. I miss men, I told myself. And there was truth in that - my erotic attraction, as the years unfolded, kept turning back toward men. But three years into the relationship, I could see a second truth I wasn’t ready for at the beginning. The way we had sex wasn’t actually so different from every relationship before hers. It was goal-oriented. Touch always had a destination. Pleasure had an objective. Orgasm sat at the centre of everything, whether either of us admitted it or not.

And honestly, I didn’t know there was another way to do sex. I hadn’t experienced Tantra yet. I’d rarely experienced conscious lovemaking - never slowed down long enough to discover that intimacy could be an exploration instead of a finish line. Back then I believed great sex was something you either had or you didn’t. You found the chemistry, or you spent your life accepting that something would always be a little missing.

I could not have been more wrong.

Years later, when the relationship was at its end and in turmoil, I found Tantra - and it cracked my understanding of intimacy wide open. It was an absolute life-saver and BLEW MY MIND. It was like a doorway opened that I hadn’t known was there. And everything I found on the other side of it eventually became the Sexual Artistry framework I now teach. But looking back, most of it fell into what I now call takeaway sex. Tasty. Fast. Hot. Gone as quickly as it came.

We prioritise what we believe matters.

1. Eat well & eat fresh. Full stop.

2. Eat organic. The shit they spray on fruit and veggies is poison.

3. Get regular therapy. Even if you love your life. Get regular therapy.

14. Eat collagen and tremella every day.

15. Eat quality animal protein and fats. No doubt I’ll get slammed for this, but switching from being vego 10 years ago changed my health in the best possible way.

16. Work with a naturopath. Natural practitioners trump GPs any day.

17. Stay away from most things the government suggests for your health. I feel strongly about this and I’m not up for debating it in comments, so please don’t start. 💁🏻‍♀️

BEAUTY 🪞

18. Stop buying into the beauty industry’s bullshit lies about “anti-ageing.” You’re allowed to age. Age naturally and gracefully. Ageing brings wisdom and life experience. Wisdom is sexy.

19. Ditch all your shit skincare and makeup loaded with toxic ingredients. Choose natural skincare that nourishes you. People ask me why my skin glows. It glows because I don’t load it with toxins. Less is more.

20. Make vitality your priority. A vital woman is a sexy woman.

21. Wear hot lingerie every day. Doesn’t need to be lacy and uncomfortable — can be sexy, cute, and functional.

22. Sleep naked.

23. Don’t over-wash your hair. I wash mine max 1-2x a week and use minimal product.

24. Do not use synthetic perfume. It’s full of poison. If you want scent, use quality essential oils.

ENVIRONMENT & PEOPLE ✨

25. You’re a product of your environment. Live somewhere that inspires you.

26. Ditch friends who don’t lift you up and make you feel alive. Doesn’t matter how long you’ve known them - if you don’t enjoy their company, you owe them nothing.

27. Start saying no way more often. No, no, no.

28. Declutter your home. Let go of old memories and old stuff. Clutter isn’t sexy.

TECH & BOUNDARIES 💻

29. Take your work emails off your phone. Less distraction. Work emails on your phone are a killer.

30. Turn off unnecessary notifications on your phone.

31. Clean out your inbox. Unsubscribe from anything that isn’t strictly necessary. Get it down to zero.

32. Do not sleep with your phone in your bedroom. Put it on silent. Do not scroll in bed. Full stop. Bed is for sleep and s*x.

33. Unfollow anyone in your feed who doesn’t inspire you. Follow max 100 people on IG.

SEX 🔥

34. Do not tolerate anything sexually. If you’re tolerating, it’s a no deal.

35. If your partner isn’t choosing you with two feet in, you deserve better. Move on.

36. Make way more eye contact during sex.

37. Take the goal of orgasm out of the equation. Trust me - it’s a game changer.

38. Quality over quantity. Always.

I did it on a Tuesday. Home alone with no particular reason and no dramatic buildup. I just walked to my bedside drawer, looked at everything in it, and knew.

Something had to change.

I’m a sexologist. A drawer full of vibrators was basically a professional requirement - or so I’d told myself. I loved pleasure and loved exploring my sexuality. I thought I was doing everything right!

But for a while, something had been nagging at me. I could orgasm quickly, efficiently even. Get the job done and move on. But afterwards I’d lie there feeling strangely empty. Like I’d eaten fast food when I was craving a gourmet meal.

I wasn’t broken and I wasn’t depressed. I just wasn’t arriving anywhere that felt truly amazing. All the stimulation, all the intensity - and I was somehow feeling less connected to my body than ever. Less present and less me. Which was a red flag I couldn’t ignore.

And that’s when crystal wands entered my life. And the experience was nothing like what I’d had before. More intense emotionally and physically…more real and authentic.
