But his customers disagreed.

Mr. Goldman owned a chain of grocery stores in Oklahoma. And like any good businessman, he paid attention to what his customers were doing. And by doing that, he noticed something a little odd.

People would walk through his stores carrying small wire baskets. They’d fill them with canned goods, vegetables, flour, milk—whatever they needed.

And then, at some point, they’d stop shopping.

Not because they’d bought everything they wanted. Because the basket had become too heavy.

A customer with two free hands might have bought more groceries. A customer struggling with a heavy basket was thinking about getting to the cash register.

Sylvan saw the problem everywhere.

The question was what to do about it.

The solution came from an unlikely place: A folding chair.

And he began to wonder. What if you could create a folding frame that held shopping baskets? And what if you put wheels underneath it?

The idea that would eventually become the modern shopping cart began taking shape.

There was just one problem.

Nobody wanted to use it.

A Solution Looking for Customers

Sylvan thought shoppers would immediately see what he saw.

No more lugging heavy baskets around the store. No more cutting a shopping trip short because your arms hurt.

You could simply push your groceries around.

What wasn’t to like?

Apparently, quite a lot.

Men reportedly thought pushing one of his contraptions made them look weak. They could carry their own groceries, thank you very much.

Women weren’t enthusiastic either. They were already pushing baby carriages and weren’t particularly interested in pushing something that reminded them of one while they shopped.

Sylvan had solved a genuine problem. However, his customers preferred the problem. That’s the part of the shopping cart story I love.

Because we tend to tell invention stories backward.

Once something becomes successful, its success seems inevitable.

Of course people wanted shopping carts. Of course Post-it Notes were useful. Of course somebody needed to invent the safety pin.

Except that’s rarely how it happens.

The people standing at the beginning don’t know how the story ends.

Sylvan Goldman certainly didn’t.

He just knew he’d created something useful that his customers were refusing to use.

So he tried another idea … one that just might catch the attention of shoppers. And one that might like.

Sometimes People Need to See the Future

Sylvan hired people to push his carts around the store.

Not employees stocking shelves. Shoppers. Or at least people who looked like shoppers.

They walked around the store putting groceries into Goldman’s new carts as though this were the most normal thing in the world.

He also reportedly stationed someone near the entrance encouraging customers to try them. And something began to change.

Customers saw other people using the carts. Then they tried them. And eventually, something strange and unfamiliar became ordinary.

So ordinary, in fact, that today you probably don’t give the shopping cart a second thought.

You walk into a grocery store, pull one from a long line of carts and start shopping.

You don’t wonder who invented it. You don’t wonder why. You certainly don’t imagine there was ever a time when shoppers looked at one and said, essentially:

No thanks. I’ll carry my groceries.

But there was.

And that is why I keep coming back to stories like this.

The Things We Stop Seeing

A few weeks ago, I asked readers a question: What ordinary thing have you always wondered about?

The responses came pouring in.

• Pens.

• Paper clips.

• Ziploc bags.

• Toilet paper.

• Potato chips.

• Highlighters.

• Shoelaces.

• Staplers.

• Tweezers.

• Q-tips.

• Keys.

• Frozen food.

• Fire hydrants.

• And plenty more.

What struck me wasn’t simply the number of suggestions. It was what the suggestions had in common.

Almost everything people named was something we encounter so often that we’ve stopped seeing it. And I realized that was exactly what I’d been doing for years.

Looking at ordinary things and wondering:

How did that get here?

Because behind almost every ordinary thing is a moment when it wasn’t ordinary at all.

Someone had to notice something.

A problem. A frustration. An inconvenience. A mistake. A possibility. Something everyone else had learned to live with.

That’s where the story usually begins.

And once you start looking at the world that way, something rather wonderful happens.

Ordinary things stop being quite so ordinary.

The $15 Debt

Take the safety pin.

It’s so simple that it seems as though it must always have existed.

But the version we recognize today was patented in 1849 by Walter Hunt. And Hunt wasn’t sitting around dreaming of changing the way the world fastened things together.

He needed money. He reportedly owed a $15 debt. So he began fiddling with a piece of wire.

He twisted it, worked with it and eventually created a pin with a spring at one end and a clasp that protected the sharp point at the other.

A tiny invention. Created because of a tiny debt. And more than 175 years later, we’re still using it.

Then there’s the coffee filter.

Melitta Bentz was tired of grounds ending up in her coffee and began experimenting with ways to filter them out.

Her eventual solution involved blotting paper.

The Post-it Note?

That story begins with an adhesive that didn’t behave the way its inventor expected.

Again and again, the pattern repeats.

Something bothers someone. Something doesn’t work. Something works incorrectly. Someone sees what everybody else has stopped noticing.

And one good idea begins.

So I Put Ten of Them Together

As your suggestions came in, I kept noticing that many matched stories I’d already collected. So I pulled ten of my favorites together.

• The shopping cart nobody wanted.

• The $15 debt that helped create the safety pin.

• The unusual adhesive that eventually became the Post-it Note.

• The household frustration that led to the coffee filter.

And six more.

But I don’t think it’s really a guide about ten things. It’s about ten moments of noticing. Ten instances when somebody looked at something the rest of the world had accepted and saw a possibility instead.

The Contradiction That Gave Me the Story

There are several ways I could have started this story.

I could have told you that Sylvan Goldman introduced the shopping cart in 1937. I could have described the folding-chair design. I could have started with the problem of shoppers carrying heavy baskets.

All of those things are important to the history.

But none of them gave me the story.

This did: Goldman invented something that made shopping easier—and shoppers refused to use it.

That’s a contradiction. And contradictions are wonderful places to look for stories.

Something happened that shouldn’t have happened.

If the shopping cart solved a genuine problem, why wouldn’t people use it?

Now I had a question the reader wanted answered.

That’s very different from simply telling someone what happened.

One gives you information.

The other gives you a reason to keep reading.

Why I Told You the Ending Almost Immediately

Notice how early I gave away what happened.

Within the first few paragraphs, I told you: Nobody wanted to use it.

Normally, we’re taught to hold back the answer.

Create suspense. Make the reader wait.

But sometimes revealing what happened creates a better question.

The mystery here wasn’t: Did the shopping cart succeed?

You already knew that. You’ve probably pushed one through a grocery store hundreds of times.

Trying to create suspense around whether the shopping cart eventually became successful would have been artificial.

The interesting question was:

Why would anyone reject something so obviously useful?

And then:

How did Goldman change their minds?

That’s where the tension lived.

This is something I think about often when writing stories about things whose endings we already know.

You don’t necessarily need to hide the outcome.

Sometimes you need to find the question hiding inside the outcome.

The Detail I Couldn’t Leave Out

Of all the details in Goldman’s story, the one I knew had to stay was his decision to hire people to push the carts around his stores.

Why?

Because it does more than tell us what happened. It shows us something about people.

Goldman had already solved the practical problem. What he hadn’t solved was the human problem.

His customers needed to see other people behaving differently before they were willing to behave differently themselves.

That’s the moment the story becomes about more than a shopping cart.

It’s about resistance.

Social proof.

Habit.

How strange something can look before enough people start doing it.

And perhaps even how difficult it can be to recognize a good idea when we’re standing too close to the old way of doing things.

Those are the details I look for when I’m researching.

Not simply:

Is this interesting?

But:

Does this detail open a door into something larger?

Where I Stopped Telling the Shopping Cart Story

There is much more to the history of the shopping cart.

Goldman’s original design wasn’t the cart we use today. Other inventors contributed improvements. Designs evolved. The carts became larger as supermarkets changed. Eventually they became so ubiquitous that stores had to deal with an entirely different problem: people taking them.

All interesting. None of it belonged here. That’s one of the temptations of research. You find something fascinating and immediately want to give it to the reader.

But every fascinating fact you add creates another direction the story can travel. Eventually, the story isn’t traveling anywhere. It’s wandering.

So I kept coming back to the same thread:

A man noticed shoppers had a problem, invented a solution, and discovered they didn’t want it. How did he get them to change their minds?

Once that question had been answered, this particular story was finished.

Research asks:

What else happened?

Story asks:

What does the reader need?

Those are not the same question.

The Story Beneath the Shopping Cart

When I began, I was writing about an ordinary object. By the end, I realized I was writing about something else.

How does something unfamiliar become ordinary?

Think about that.

There was a day when pushing a shopping cart through a grocery store looked strange. Today, refusing to use one when you have a week’s worth of groceries might look strange.

Somewhere between those two moments, behavior changed.

That’s the deeper layer I want in a JOGI story.

The history gives us the events. The human behavior gives us the meaning.

And finding that second layer is often what turns an interesting piece of trivia into a story worth telling.

The Seeing Layer

But there’s another part of this story that matters to me.

Before I could tell you the story of the shopping cart, someone had to look at a shopping cart and wonder about it.

That’s easy to underestimate.

We tend to think storytellers need extraordinary experiences. Travel somewhere remarkable. Meet someone famous. Witness something dramatic.

But there are stories sitting on our kitchen counters, hanging in our closets, parked in our garages and rolling through the grocery store.

We’ve simply stopped seeing them.

That’s why I’ve become increasingly interested in the space before writing.

Before structure. Before openings. Before pacing. Before beautiful sentences.

There’s noticing.

Someone looks at something familiar and asks:

• Why is it this way?

• Who decided this?

• What happened before this existed?

• What problem was somebody trying to solve?

Or my favorite:

There’s got to be a story behind this.

That’s how this one begins.

Not with Sylvan Goldman. Not in 1937. Not even with a shopping cart.

It begins with noticing something we’ve all seen thousands of times and deciding to look again.

Because before you can tell the story everyone else missed, you first have to see it.

Sometimes several times an hour.

“OK.”

“Is that OK with you?”

“OK, let’s go.”

“Everything’s OK.”

It slips off the tip of your tongue without a second thought. It taps across glowing phone screens, hums through noisy conference rooms, settles quiet domestic arguments, and seals silent nod agreements.

It’s one of the most recognized and frequently spoken sounds on the planet.

People who barely share a word of language still grasp its cadence.

It’s short, crisp, and somehow feels permanent—like it was chiseled into human speech from the start.

Most of us never stop to wonder where it came from. We just use it. It feels as ordinary as the rise and fall of your chest.

But “OK” was never supposed to last.

It should have disappeared like so many other linguistic quirks born from an era of ink-stained newsprint, coal smoke, and fast-moving city chatter—a fleeting decade straddling the quiet world of horse-drawn carriages and the frantic, clattering dawn of the industrial age.

A Silly Fad Nobody Expected to Survive

In the late 1830s, America had a strange little habit.

Newspapers and young clerks in cobblestoned cities like Boston developed a playful craze for deliberately misspelled abbreviations. They took common phrases, butchered the spelling on purpose, and shortened them into initials.

It was a kind of linguistic wink—a way to sound clever over a tavern ale or a dry cup of coffee.

For instance:

• “No go” became “KG” for “know go.”

• “All right” turned into “OW” for “oll wright.”

• “No use” became “KY” for “know yuse.”

These abbreviations popped up in smudged newspaper columns, folded hand-written notes, and casual street-corner chatter.

They were trendy, a bit silly, and very much steeped in the damp wool and whale-oil light of their moment.

Most of them flared up quickly and then faded just as fast.

They were the linguistic equivalent of a seasonal coat cut—fun while they lasted, forgotten as soon as the weather shifted.

Among this short-lived fad was one particular abbreviation that stood for “oll korrect.”

O.K.

It first appeared in print on March 23, 1839, buried in the dense, ink-heavy columns of the Boston Morning Post. The editor used it casually, almost as a private joke meant to elicit a dry chuckle from his readers.

At the time, it was just one more entry in a crowded field of misspelled initials.

Nothing about it suggested permanence. It was lightweight, temporary, and thoroughly unremarkable.

That should have been the end of it.

How a Joke Quietly Connected to Everything

The link between that silly newspaper joke and the word we use today is so faint it’s almost impossible to believe.

“OK” literally stood for “oll korrect”—a deliberately sloppy spelling of “all correct.” It was never meant to bear weight. It was the kind of thing a bored editor might scratch into paper with a steel-nibbed pen on a slow, drizzly afternoon to amuse himself and his readers.

The fad itself was already starting to cool by the early 1840s. In fact most of its creations were drifting toward the linguistic trash heap.

Yet “OK” had one quiet advantage the others lacked: it was short, versatile, and easy to roll off the palate. Two quick syllables. A hard throat stop and a soft vowel release.

It could mean agreement, approval, or simple acknowledgment. In a young country full of wooden storefronts and fast-moving commerce, that flexibility mattered more than anyone realized at the time.

Still, flexibility alone rarely saves a fad.

Something else had to give it a push.

When a Presidential Campaign Gave It Legs

The push came from politics.

In 1840, Martin Van Buren was running for re-election.

Van Buren had been born in the Hudson Valley town of Kinderhook, New York, and his supporters began calling him “Old Kinderhook.” They formed noisy political clubs—the OK Club—and painted the abbreviation on broadside posters, brass buttons, and parade banners that snapped in the autumn wind.

The timing was perfect.

The existing joke abbreviation “OK” suddenly gained a second, heavier meaning.

What had started as a scribbled “oll korrect” now also stood for a presidential candidate. The two meanings tangled together in the public mind. Editors who had once used “OK” as a lighthearted filler now heard it shouted down torch-lit streets.

Van Buren lost the election.

But the abbreviation did not lose its momentum.

Over the following decades, “OK” slowly shed its original jokey skin. It stopped feeling like a deliberate misspelling and started feeling like a real word.

Union and Confederate soldiers scratched it into campfire journals during the Civil War. Businessmen sent it humming across copper wires in telegraph clicks—a short, unmistakable pulse. Ordinary people penned it in letters home on yellowed paper.

Each new generation inherited it without knowing—or caring—about the silly Boston fad that had birthed it.

By the early twentieth century, the transformation was complete. “OK” no longer needed an explanation.

It simply worked.

The Other Jokes That Quietly Died

Almost every other abbreviation from that 1830s fad vanished without a trace.

You will not hear anyone today say “KG” for “no go” or “OW” for “all right.” Those jokes died with the generation that invented them, buried alongside their top hats and pocket watches.

The entire playful misspelling craze faded into obscurity, remembered only by a handful of linguistic historians digging through fragile archives.

“OK” should have disappeared with them.

Instead, the opposite happened.

As the other abbreviations evaporated, “OK” kept spreading. It crossed the Atlantic on steamships. It seeped into foreign dialects. It survived the crackle of the telegraph, the staticky receiver of the early telephone, radio broadcasts, black-and-white television, and the glowing blue glow of the internet.

Each new technology only made it more useful. In a world that increasingly valued speed and brevity, a two-letter phrase that could signal receipt, approval, or simple survival was nearly perfect.

The original joke was forgotten. The newsprint offices where it first stained a page were demolished. The young men who once thought deliberate misspellings were hilarious grew old, turned grey, and passed away. The political campaign that had given it a second wind became a quiet footnote in dusty history books.

What remained was the word itself—stripped of its playful origins and standing alone.

The Two Letters That Refused to Disappear

Today “OK” is one of the most successful linguistic survivors in history.

It is understood in sunbaked markets, sleek glass skyscrapers, and high-speed train cars across every inhabited continent. It appears in leather-bound contracts and informal text bubbles. It has been borrowed, adapted, and absorbed into dozens of languages. In some places, it has even morphs into a verb or an adjective.

People who have never heard of the Boston Morning Post or Martin Van Buren still reach for it dozens of times a day.

It’s quiet dominance is almost eerie.

Most slang from the nineteenth century smells dusty the moment you encounter it on a page. “OK” does not. It feels neutral, modern, and strangely inevitable—as if language itself had decided it needed a simple, friction-free way to say, “yes, that’s fine” and refused to let the idea go.

The original fad that created it is long dead. The other abbreviations that shared its birth year are forgotten. Even the political campaign that helped it spread is remembered mainly by specialists.

Yet the two letters remain.

They sit on our lips and under our thumbs, so familiar we barely notice them. They carry no lingering scent of 1839 Boston print shops or 1840 campaign banners. They simply work.

The Lasting Legacy

And that may be the most surprising part of all.

A deliberate misspelling, born as a joke among a handful of bored newspapermen and amplified by a losing presidential campaign, somehow outlasted nearly every other artifact from its era.

While its contemporaries disappeared into dust, “OK” kept moving forward—quietly, steadily, and without asking permission—until it became one of the most universal expressions human beings have ever created.

And there it is again.

One good idea—or in this case, one playful little joke—became something no one who first printed those two letters could possibly have imagined: a word that crossed borders, languages, technologies, and nearly two centuries of human history.

No one planned it. No one owned it. No one set out to change the way the world communicated.

Someone simply wrote “O.K.”

And the world kept it.

The next time the word leaves your mouth, you might pause for half a second.

Somewhere behind those two ordinary letters is a forgotten joke, the sharp smell of fresh printer’s ink, and a political banner snapping in the breeze that refused to stay in the past.

Most linguistic jokes die young.

This one grew up and took over the world.

The Question That Gave Me the Story

When I started researching “OK,” I had a problem.

There was almost too much to tell.

Its origin in a strange abbreviation craze. Martin Van Buren. The telegraph. Its spread into other languages. Competing theories about where it came from. The countless variations it eventually produced.

All of that was interesting. But interesting information isn’t necessarily a story.

I needed a question.

And eventually I found it:

Why did this particular abbreviation survive when almost all the others disappeared?

That changed everything.

Now I wasn’t writing the history of “OK.”

I was following the unlikely survival of a joke that should have vanished nearly two centuries ago.

That’s an important distinction.

Research gives you facts.

Story gives those facts somewhere to go.

Finding the Thread

Once I knew the question, I could see which details belonged in the story.

The Boston newspapermen mattered because they created the joke. Martin Van Buren’s supporters mattered because they gave it another life.

Telegraph operators mattered because usefulness helped push it beyond the joke that created it.

Each development answered another piece of the same question:

How did this thing keep surviving?

That’s the thread.

And once you find it, something else becomes easier.

You know what to leave out.

The Hardest Part of Research May Be Letting It Go

I could have taken you in dozens of other directions.

The competing theories about the origin of “OK.” Its spread into other languages. Its use in technology. The variations it eventually produced.

I found plenty of fascinating material. But adding more history wouldn’t necessarily have made this a better story.

That’s one of the hardest lessons for a storyteller who loves research.

Just because you discovered something doesn’t mean the reader needs to know it.

Every detail has to earn its place.

For this story, I kept coming back to one test: Does this help explain why a joke that should have disappeared didn’t?

If it didn’t, I was willing to let it go.

What the Story Was Really About

Here’s something else I often don’t know when I begin researching.

I don’t always know what the story is really about.

On the surface, this one was obviously about a word. But the deeper I went, the more I realized I was writing about survival.

“OK” wasn’t necessarily the cleverest abbreviation of its time. Nobody designed it to last. There was no grand plan.

People simply kept finding uses for it. And every new use gave it another reason to survive.

That deeper layer matters because facts may satisfy curiosity.

Meaning is what makes a story stay with us.

The Seeing Layer

And then there’s the reason I noticed this story at all.

“OK” is almost invisible.

We say it without hearing it. Type it without seeing it. Encounter it so often that we’ve stopped wondering about it.

I think storytellers can become obsessed with looking for extraordinary subjects.

I’m increasingly convinced we should become better at noticing ordinary subjects that contain extraordinary stories.

That’s a different skill.

Before you can write the story, you have to see that there’s a story there.

And sometimes the best place to start is with something everyone else has stopped noticing.

In this case, it was only two letters.

Turns out, there was a small glitch.

You know … the thing with the small plastic stem, the bright character head that tilts back with a soft mechanical click, the neat stack of colored brick-shaped candies that slide forward one by one.

Children have pressed those heads for generations—Santa Claus, Mickey Mouse, superheroes, cartoon characters, limited-edition celebrities. Collectors hunt rare early versions the way others chase baseball cards.

The candy itself is chalky-sweet, fruit-flavored, and instantly familiar. PEZ feels like pure play, pure nostalgia, pure childhood.

That is the PEZ the world knows.

Yet beneath that cheerful, plastic exterior lies an origin story almost unrecognizable today.

Long before superhero heads and fruit flavors existed, the candy was designed not for children, but for adults trying to kick a daily habit. It carried no novelty, no bright colors, and no cartoon faces—just a sleek, clinical promise meant to replace a vice that held half the continent of Austria in its grip.

Its journey from a serious Viennese health product to a global toy is one of the most unexpected pivots in candy history.

But to understand this journey, we must step back to 1927—a year vibrating with a frantic, electric energy. Across the globe, cities were caught in the clash between old world and new.

Early neon signs flickered against wet cobblestones, casting a buzzing glow over street corners where sleek automobiles rattled alongside lingering horse-drawn carriages.

Radios glowed warm in living rooms, silent film theaters packed in crowds on the cusp of sound, and jazz spilled from basement clubs, filling the night with the syncopated blare of brass and piano keys.

It was the peak of the Roaring Twenties, a world moving at a breakneck pace.

The air was a rich, chaotic rhythm—the metallic screech of streetcars on iron tracks, the sharp chatter of typewriters from high-rise windows, and newsboys shouting extra editions on sidewalk curbs.

Men in sharp wool suits and fedoras brushed past women in loose, drop-waisted dresses, all caught up in an era defined by speed, modern machinery, and bold new habits.

Yet for all its electric modernization, one overwhelming reality bound the era together. Every bustling street, grand café, and high-rise office shared the exact same atmosphere—a lingering, inescapable haze.

Smoke In the Air

In Vienna, the air was thick with the rich scent of dark-roast coffee, the pungent bite of coal smoke, and the heavy, clinging fog of cigarettes.

Smoke drifted through lit-up cafes, curled around velvet curtains, and settled deep into wool coats. Smoking was fashionable, almost obligatory in certain circles—the faint scrape of a match, the flicker of a lighter, and the quiet hiss of exhaled smoke formed the background rhythm of daily life.

Eduard Haas III, a young Austrian businessman from a successful baking-powder family, watched the habit with quiet disapproval. He was an anti-smoking advocate who believed people needed something better to put in their mouths—something that freshened the breath and occupied the restless oral habit without the tar, the rasping cough, and the bitter ash

Traditional candy making relies on giant copper kettles, bubbling hot syrups, and sweet, sticky vapor. But heat was the enemy of Haas’s vision; boiling heat cooked away the volatile, soothing essence of premium peppermint oil, leaving behind a dull, faint sweetness.

Instead, Haas and his chemists pioneered a dust-dry, purely mechanical process. They blended ultrafine confectioners’ sugar with pure, unheated essence of peppermint. The mixture was fed into heavy industrial presses where steel dies slammed together under thousands of pounds of sheer force.

With a sharp, metallic thud-clack, the immense pressure fused the loose, aromatic powder into a rock-hard, perfectly crisp brick—locking the icy, piercing oils inside without ever applying a single flame. The result was an intensely cold, medicinal burst that exploded on the tongue the moment the chalky tablet began to dissolve

He called his creation PEZ, pulling the first, middle, and last letters from the German word for peppermint, Pfefferminz.

The crisp, chalk-white bricks were packed into sleek pocket tins, marketed not as a playground treat, but as an indispensable accessory for the polished adult. Glamorous magazine ads featured suave couples lingering close beneath the promise of “Deliciously fresh breath!”, while bold slogans declared, “Smoking prohibited—PEZing allowed!”

On the bustling city streets, uniformed PEZ Girls stepped out of sleek, custom-painted vehicles, instantly drawing crowds with their bright, pristine caps and tailored brass-buttoned suits. They moved through the morning chill with poised efficiency, opening heavy leather satchels to reveal neat rows of polished silver tins.

As they handed them out, the cold metal clicked softly in the palms of suited commuters and hurried shoppers, giving off a subtle, icy wisp of pure peppermint that cut right through the heavy, damp exhaust and lingering cigarette smoke of the boulevard.

That small, satisfying click of metal soon became a familiar pulse of European urban life. What began as a local health alternative quickly spread across train platforms, theater foyers, and high-end tobacconists, seamlessly weaving itself into the daily routines of a generation.

For over twenty years, PEZ was precisely this: a chic, austere European mint designed for grown-ups navigating an age choked in smoke.

No Fingers Needed

After the ruin of the Second World War, as crowds returned to packed streetcars and busy sidewalks, the old metal tins suddenly felt clunky and unhygienic—fingers digging into shared candy was an unwelcome relic of the past.

Haas turned to inventor Oscar Uxa to build a sleeker, cleaner solution. What Uxa engineered was a marvel of post-war plastics: a slim, spring-loaded column that tucked effortlessly into a vest pocket, delivering a single mint at a time with a quick, thumb-operated flip.

Debuting at the 1949 Vienna Trade Fair, the sleek white box was unmistakable in its design—it looked, felt, and operated almost exactly like a high-end cigarette lighter. It held precisely twelve rectangular tablets stacked in a taut vertical column, a number that remains unchanged to this day.

The weight and silhouette were entirely intentional.

In a society where flicking opens a lighter was second nature, the smooth, matte plastic settled with familiar ease into an adult palm. Drivers could push up the top with a single thumb, feel the faint recoil of the internal spring, and slide a sharp peppermint onto their tongue without ever taking an eye off the road.

When closed, it snapped shut with a crisp, metallic-sounding clack—a sharp, decisive sound that echoed the cool sophistication of the world it belonged to.

That core mechanics—the tight-stacked candy bricks and the bulletproof spring-action dispenser—was a masterpiece of industrial design. Unbeknownst to anyone in 1949, this austere adult gadget was about to become the hidden bridge to a completely different world.

Hello America

As the 1950s dawned, PEZ set its sights across the Atlantic, landing in an American market bursting with post-war optimism, booming suburbs, and television sets glowing in suburban living rooms.

But the sleek, austere Austrian mint hit a wall: American adults weren’t interested in a bitter, medicinal peppermint tablet designed to replace a cigarette. They already had their own lighters, their own habits, and a preference for much sweeter treats.

Faced with dismal sales, Haas was now stuck with a product that could only be sold in his own country. He was ready to return home, bring his anti-smoking mint dispenser with him. But not everyone back Vienna agreed Haas should give up on the American market.

It fact it triggered an intense clash of philosophies in corporate headquarters. At the center of the dispute was Curtis Allina, a sharp, forward-thinking executive who Hass hired to spearhead PEZ’s American operations.

Allina fired off urgent dispatches to Vienna, demanding a radical three-part overhaul:

• Ditch the Bitter Peppermint: Replace the sharp, icy mint with sweet, aromatic fruit flavors—bright strawberry, sun-ripened orange, tangy lemon, and rich cherry.

• Pivot the Audience: Stop marketing to nostalgic European adults and turn PEZ into an unabashed children’s treat.

• Turn Dispensers into Toys: Mold colorful, iconic character heads onto the top of the stems to transform a dull pillbox into a whimsical mechanical puppet.

In Vienna, Eduard Haas III bristled at the suggestions.

To Haas, PEZ was a proud life’s work—a sophisticated, health-minded product born out of a noble anti-smoking mission. Capping his sleek, lighter-inspired invention with cartoonish plastic heads felt like a cheap gimmick that degraded the elegance of his brand.

Yet as American inventory sat untouched on warehouse shelves and financial losses mounted, Haas had no choice but to go along with Curtis Allina’s new strategy.

Out went the medicinal bite of pure peppermint, replaced by sweet, fragrant bursts of strawberry, orange, lemon, and cherry. The chalky white bricks took on pastel hues, sending off a sugary aroma the second a pack’s thin foil wrapping was peeled back.

The true stroke of genius, however, was crowned atop the stem. In 1955, Haas signed off on Allina’s plan to place a three-dimensional character head right over the thumb-rest, starting with a full-body Santa Claus, followed by a simple space ray gun, a green Halloween witch, and the candy’s first major pop-culture license—Popeye the Sailor.

Suddenly, pushing back the plastic head wasn’t just a motion—it was an interactive event. A child’s thumb hooked under a vibrant, painted chin—Popeye’s pipe, or Santa’s glossy red hat—and tilted it backward.

Inside, a tiny steel spring compressed with a light, hollow snick-pop, pushing the plastic neck forward like a protruding tongue to offer up a single candy brick.

Children didn’t just eat the candy; they worked the mechanism over and over, mesmerized by the tactile rhythm of the tilt, the slide, and the snap.

And with that one single decision, the sleek adult lighter had transformed almost overnight into an iconic, pocket-sized mechanical puppet—a global pop-culture toy born from a Viennese anti-smoking mint.

Lost to Memory

Within a single generation, the candy’s original identity completely vanished from public memory.

Few people who grew up snapping back the head of Mickey Mouse, Batman, or Santa Claus ever realized that PEZ began as a high-minded European alternative to cigarettes. The fierce peppermint bite, the pocket tins, the sleek lighter-shaped “regulars,” and the catchy slogan “PEZing allowed!” quietly dissolved into corporate footnotes.

The transformation was absolute.

The original Viennese mint became virtually invisible beneath layers of brightly colored plastic and sugary fruit flavors. Though the underlying mechanics and brick-shaped candies remained identical, the world embraced a new story—one that began in the sunlit, toy-filled aisles of post-war America, while the smoke-filled cafés of 1920s Vienna faded into total obscurity.

The Lasting Legacy

The playful version that emerged from that reinvention proved far larger than the original ever was. Character dispensers multiplied into the thousands. Licensing deals brought every major cartoon, movie, and cultural figure onto the little plastic stems.

Collectors formed clubs, held conventions, and paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars for rare early examples. A factory in Orange, Connecticut, still presses millions of tablets a day for the North American market.

PEZ survived because it was willing to abandon its first purpose almost completely while keeping the essential physical heart of the product. The forgotten adult mint supplied the candy shape, the dispensing mechanism, and the brand name. The children’s version supplied the joy, the collecting passion, and the cultural staying power.

Today when a child tilts back a bright plastic head and a colored brick slides forward with that familiar soft click, they are holding both products at once—the serious European breath freshener that wanted to replace cigarettes, and the exuberant American toy that replaced the memory of that ambition.

The original design remains hidden inside the modern collectible, quiet and almost forgotten, yet still making the whole thing work.

The Men Behind the Story

In the end, both men lived long lives and watched their reluctant compromise turn into a massive global empire.

Curtis Allina ran PEZ’s North American operations for nearly three decades. His gamble on character heads and fruit flavors completely transformed the brand’s trajectory, making PEZ a staple of American pop culture and a worldwide collecting craze.

After a long, successful career guiding the company’s shift into the toy-and-candy juggernaut it is today, Allina retired to Washington state, where he passed away in December 2009 at the age of 87.

Eduard Haas III saw his anti-smoking health mint evolve into one of the world’s most recognizable playthings. Though he had initially resisted turning his creation into a children’s toy, the staggering international success proved impossible to deny.

Haas remained a celebrated figure in Austria and the international confectionery industry, living to see PEZ dispensers become prized cultural artifacts. He passed away in Vienna on October 13, 1986, at the age of 89, leaving behind a company that succeeded far beyond his original anti-smoking vision.

What This Story Is Really About

It would be easy to describe the PEZ story as a pivot.

The product wasn’t selling in America, so the company changed the flavor, changed the audience, added character heads, and suddenly found success.

But that explanation misses what made the decision so difficult.

Eduard Haas III hadn’t simply created a peppermint candy. He had created PEZ for a reason.

He was an anti-smoking advocate who believed people needed an alternative to cigarettes. The peppermint flavor, the adult advertising, the sleek dispenser that resembled a cigarette lighter—all of it supported that original purpose.

PEZ wasn’t supposed to be playful. It certainly wasn’t supposed to be childish.

So when Curtis Allina suggested transforming it into a children’s candy, he wasn’t asking Haas to make a minor adjustment. He was asking him to reconsider what PEZ was.

And Haas resisted.

That resistance makes perfect sense.

Creators become attached to more than the things we make. We become attached to our original intentions for them.

We know what the idea is supposed to be.

Who it is supposed to serve.

What it is supposed to become.

And because we created it, we can easily assume that our first interpretation of the idea is the correct one.

But sometimes the idea has possibilities we can’t yet see.

PEZ only found them when Haas finally allowed his creation to become something other than the thing he had imagined.

The Hidden Dynamic

Here’s what I find most interesting about the PEZ transformation:

The company changed almost everything people could see while preserving almost everything that made the product work.

The peppermint became fruit flavors. Adults became children.

A sophisticated breath mint became candy. A sleek dispenser became a toy. Character heads appeared on top.

The entire emotional experience of PEZ changed. Yet underneath all of that, the essential architecture remained remarkably familiar.

The little rectangular candies were still stacked inside a narrow dispenser. A spring still pushed them forward. The familiar mechanical action still delivered one piece at a time.

Even the product name survived.

PEZ didn’t really abandon its original invention. It changed the meaning surrounding it. That’s the hidden dynamic.

We often think preserving an idea means protecting its current form.

But form and essence aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Sometimes the most important creative decision is figuring out which is which.

Haas could let go of peppermint. He could let go of adults. He could even let go of the anti-smoking identity that had inspired the product in the first place.

But the small mechanical heart of PEZ remained.

And once everything around it changed, that same mechanism suddenly produced an entirely different experience.

What had once imitated the ritual of flicking open a cigarette lighter became something children wanted to operate again and again simply because it was fun.

Same mechanism.

Different meaning.

And that difference changed everything.

What Creators Can Learn From This Story

1. Protect the core, not necessarily the form.

When an idea isn’t working, it’s tempting to think there are only two choices: keep pushing the original version or abandon it altogether.

PEZ suggests a third.

Find the part worth preserving.

It may be the underlying idea. The mechanism. The insight. The promise. The particular way you solve a problem.

Once you know what that is, everything surrounding it becomes much more flexible.

2. Pay attention to what you’re most reluctant to change.

Haas thought character heads would cheapen PEZ.

From the perspective of the sophisticated adult product he had created, he wasn’t wrong.

They did fundamentally change the identity of the brand. They also helped create the PEZ generations remember.

That doesn’t mean every idea we resist is secretly brilliant.

But resistance can reveal where we’ve become especially attached to our own assumptions. And sometimes that’s exactly where we need to look.

3. A disappointing response may be information, not a verdict.

PEZ struggled in the American market.

Haas could easily have concluded that Americans simply didn’t want his product and gone home.

Instead, poor sales forced the company to reconsider the product itself.

That’s a useful distinction for creators.

When something doesn’t connect, the question isn’t always:

How do I make more people want this?

Sometimes the better question is:

What is this response trying to tell me?

The answer might point toward a different audience, a different presentation, or an opportunity hidden inside the original idea.

4. The audience may see a possibility you didn’t.

PEZ began with Haas deciding what adults needed.

Its second life emerged when the company began thinking about what children might enjoy.

Sweet flavors. Bright colors. Characters. Collecting. Play.

The physical product hadn’t suddenly become more ingenious.

The context around it had changed. And that new context allowed people to experience the product differently.

That’s worth remembering whenever people use, respond to, or become interested in our work in ways we didn’t anticipate.

They may be showing us something about the idea that we can’t see from the creator’s side of the table.

5. Your first idea may be the hidden ancestor of your best one.

This may be my favorite part of the PEZ story.

The original product didn’t really disappear. It’s still hiding inside every modern PEZ dispenser.

The candy shape. The stacking system. The spring mechanism. The little movement that pushes one piece forward.

All of it reaches back to a very different product created for a very different person in a very different world.

The anti-smoking mint became the hidden ancestor of the childhood toy.

Creators sometimes assume an idea has failed when it doesn’t become what we originally imagined.

But perhaps that isn’t always failure. Sometimes the first version exists to reveal the piece that belongs in the next one.

An idea can outgrow its original purpose without losing the thing that made it special. And perhaps that’s one of the hardest creative lessons of all.

We spend so much time trying to make our ideas become what we imagined that we can miss the moment when they begin showing us what else they could be.

But what you might not know is that back in the 1920s, St. Louis was also the footwear capital of the United States. Giant regional companies like the International Shoe Company and Brown Shoe Company operated massive factories along the Mississippi River, producing millions of pairs of shoes for mail-order catalogs and retail stores across the country.

And if you happened to be driving along Route 66 as it passed through the city, you would have seen countless roadside billboards competing for your attention.

Most people never gave them a second thought. But one of those signs would eventually help name one of the most recognizable snack cakes in American history.

Around those billboards, however, the larger world was growing heavier.

The Great Depression was tightening its grip. Factories cut hours. Families stretched every nickel. At the Continental Baking Company’s Hostess plant near Chicago, specialized shortcake pans sat idle for most of the year.

They were used only during strawberry season to bake Little Shortcake Fingers—small sponge cakes filled with strawberry cream. The rest of the year, the equipment collected dust while the economy darkened.

The pressure was the same everywhere: find something that could sell steadily. Something inexpensive. Something that could turn unused capacity into income.

Something that would keep the ovens warm, employees working, and the nickels rolling in—day after day, long after strawberry season had ended.

What Only A Delivery Boy Sees

James Alexander “Jimmy” Dewar was born on February 5, 1897, in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, Canada. As a young man he worked demanding manual labor jobs on boats shipping timber and limestone before moving to the Chicago area.

In 1920 he began at the Continental Baking Company as a delivery boy, peddling pound cakes from a horse-drawn cart. He was practical, steady, and observant. Thanks to his strong work ethic and operational eye, by 1930 he had risen to plant manager.

Jimmy watched the idle shortcake pans and felt the weight of unused machinery in a shrinking economy. So he adapted the machinery to pump banana cream filling into cheap, two-pack sponge finger cakes.

Then he created several test batches, which he shared with employees and mid-level supervisors. The reaction was always the same … they loved this newly concocted tasty treat.

Now right around the time Jimmy was finalizing his finger cakes and preparing to pitch the item corporate-wide, he was sent on a business trip to St. Louis.

Just as thousands of other drivers had done, Jimmy drove past one of the many roadside billboards outside St. Louis.

It advertised Twinkle Toe Shoes.

There was something about the playful name that lingered in his mind. Days later, as he searched for a name for his new snack cake, he remembered it.

A Baker’s Delight

Jimmy Dewar’s solution to the shortcake pans busy year round was simple and resourceful. Keep the same golden sponge-cake pans and elongated shape but fill the cakes with a cream that could be made any time of year instead of seasonal strawberries.

And since the cakes were small, they could easily be priced as a two-pack for a nickel—suited to Depression budgets.

At this point in the processing, the only left to do was name this new cake. And that’s when he thought back to the billboard advertising Twinkle Toe shoes.

Borrowing from that, Jimmy shortened the name, making it stand out too little kids. So he named his new confectionary delight Twinkies. Now that he had a name, Jimmy took his concept to the corporate board and received their approval.

The product went straight into mass production and hit store shelves fully branded as Hostess Twinkies on April 6, 1930.

Were the new cakes successful?

You bet they were.

The initial run sold out through local grocers and street vendors rapidly enough that Continental Baking immediately expanded production from a single plant to regional bakeries across the Midwest within its first few months.

While specific unit counts from day one is lost to history, early plant records indicate production quickly scaled into tens of thousands of cakes per week during the summer of 1930 to keep pace with route deliveries.

Even though the original recipe used real eggs, milk, and butter, the cakes stayed fresh only about two days. Salesmen had to restock constantly. But nonetheless, Twinkies was a hit. The nickel price and the cheerful name helped boost sales.

During World War II a banana shortage forced the switch to vanilla cream filling—the version that became permanent and iconic. The little cakes grew familiar on store shelves and in lunchboxes.

What began as a way to fill empty pans and a name inspired by a roadside shoe advertisement became a recognizable American snack.

As for Jimmy, he rose through the company, eventually becoming a regional vice president, and was later known with pride as “Mr. Twinkie.” He would later say the invention was “the best darn tootin’ idea I ever had.”

Not Quilty by Twinkie

Twinkies moved far beyond the bakery.

They entered popular culture—comics, television, and movies. But perhaps their greatest moment was the so-called “Twinkie defense.”

Let me take you back to November 27, 1978, when Dan White, a San Francisco City Supervisor assassinated Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk at City Hall.

Dan White’s trial took place roughly one year later in 1979. White’s defense attorneys argued a legal concept known as diminished capacity. They claimed White suffered from severe, untreated clinical depression, which rendered him incapable of the premeditation and deliberation required for a first-degree murder conviction.

To establish that White was in a state of severe mental breakdown, defense psychologists presented evidence of drastic changes in his normal behavior:

• White was normally a health-conscious, clean-cut former police officer, firefighter, and athlete.

• As his depression deepened in the weeks leading up to the murders, he quit his job, abandoned his usual exercise routine, withdrew from his family, and began consuming massive amounts of high-sugar junk food and soft drinks (including Hostess Twinkies and Coca-Cola).

Psychiatrist Dr. Martin Blinder testified that this sudden shift to a high-sugar diet was a symptom of his underlying depression, not the cause of it. However, he also noted that consuming large amounts of sugar might have worsened his chemical imbalance and aggravated his mood swings.

Following the trial testimony, Paul Krassner (the founder of the underground satirical publication The Realist) and San Francisco Chronicle coined the phrase “Twinkie Defense” in his satirical coverage of the proceedings. The media quickly latched onto the phrase, transforming Mr. White’s depression into a sensationalized headline: Man blames Twinkies for double murder.

The defense strategy worked. The jury acquitted White of first-degree murder and instead convicted him of voluntary manslaughter, finding that his diminished capacity prevented premeditation.

Dan White was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison (he served five years before being paroled). Of course that set off a huge public debate on whether the sentence was too short and if the “Twinkie Defense” was legitimate.

The brand survived the outrage and continued selling in big numbers.

In fact hundreds of millions are still sold each year. A practical solution to idle equipment, sparked in part by the cheerful name of a children’s shoe brand on a billboard near St. Louis, became an enduring symbol of inexpensive American sweetness and nostalgia.

When Ideas Collide

Jimmy Dewar didn’t invent the word. He recognized it.

Jimmy Dewar wasn’t searching for the perfect name.

He was paying attention to the world while solving an entirely different problem.

More often, they arrive when two unrelated ideas finally recognize each other.

Every design decision carried the weight of lives at sea.

That’s because American vessels pitched and rolled through storms and combat. Sensitive instruments—meters, gauges, navigational tools—had to remain steady no matter how violently the decks moved.

Engineers were ordered to invent ways to isolate those instruments from vibration and shock. The problem was pure physics under pressure: how to absorb motion without losing precision.

The only goal was control—control over the ocean’s chaos so that ships could keep fighting. The solution the Navy needed would eventually change millions of childhoods, filling them with laughter and joy.

But first, it needed someone who noticed what everyone else overlooked. Someone who couldn’t help but tinker with things … some with a curious mind.

A Curios Mind is Born

Richard Thompson James was born on March 27, 1918, in Philadelphia. He grew up curious about how things worked. As a teenager during the Depression he once found an abandoned 1923 Buick in the woods, restored it enough to run, and sold it.

He attended the Westtown School, a Quaker boarding school, graduating in 1935, then earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1939.

After graduation he entered the workforce as an engineer. By 1943 the war had placed him at the William Cramp & Sons shipyard in Philadelphia, a vast complex employing thousands. His assignment was practical and urgent: develop a tension spring system that could suspend and stabilize sensitive instruments aboard naval vessels even in rough seas.

At home he and his wife, Betty Mattas James were building a family. They would eventually have six children. Money was never abundant but somehow, they made it work. Their children didn’t go hungry, were clothed and enjoyed gifts at birthdays and Christmas.

But Richard was the kind of person that carried unfinished calculations in his head even at the dinner table. He was precise, intense, and restless—the kind of man who noticed the smallest, unexpected motion.

Walking Coils

One day in 1943, while working with torsion springs, Richard accidentally knocked one from a shelf or workbench. Instead of simply falling and lying still, the coil stepped—end over end—in a series of arcs.

The spring unexpectedly moved from the shelf to a stack of books, across a surface, and finally to the floor, where it settled upright as if it had decided to stop.

Richard watched, fascinated.

That evening he went home still reeling with the discovery. He told Betty, “I think if I got the right property of steel and the right tension, I could make it walk.” He was clearly excited.

Over the following months he experimented at home with different wires, thicknesses, and tensions, treating the kitchen table and nearby surfaces as a laboratory.

He showed the improved coils to the children in the neighborhood. They gathered around, laughing and chasing the spring as it walked down steps or across the floor. Their delight confirmed what Richard already felt: this motion was special.

Betty remained cautious at first, but she too began to see the possibility. In 1944 she leafed through a dictionary searching for a word that captured the graceful, sinuous movement and the soft sound the coil made. She settled on “Slinky.”

The idea was still fragile.

The early versions tangled. The ends were sharp. Producing consistent coils required money and machinery they did not yet have. Retailers were skeptical of a simple metal spring.

Yet the neighborhood children’s reactions and Richard’s own excitement kept the experiment alive.

Just Show Me

With a $500 loan from a friend, Richard and Betty formed what became James Industries.

In November 1945 they persuaded Gimbels department store in Philadelphia to let them demonstrate the coil. Richard set it at the top of an inclined display and let it do what it always did–walk.

Crowds gathered, completely amazed by what they saw.

In ninety minutes they sold all 400 units they had brought, each priced at one dollar. The Richard’s invention just made the couple $400 richer.

By the end of the 1945 Christmas season, roughly 20,000 to 22,000 Slinkys had been sold. Demand continued to surge. Over the next year (into 1946), sales exceeded a quarter-million units.

Some accounts claim that within the first two years the company sold as many as 100 million units (though this figure is sometimes viewed as optimistic).

A Smooth Operation

The first batches had been made by an outside piston-ring manufacturing shop in Philadelphia (about 450 units for the initial run). Once demand exploded, Richard designed specialized coiling machinery himself.

These machines could take roughly 80 feet of high-carbon steel wire and form it into a finished Slinky (about 98 coils, 2½ inches tall) in roughly 10 seconds. The couple rented factory space, first in the Germantown section of Philadelphia and later in the suburb of Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania.

At the peak of early production they ran multiple machines (reports mention six machines capable of turning out around 100 Slinkys per hour). Richard handled the engineering and production side; Betty managed orders, packaging, and much of the day-to-day business.

Packaging evolved from simple paper wrapping to a clean black box that proclaimed it “the famous walking spring toy.”

In 1946 the Slinky was shown at the American Toy Fair in New York, where retailers placed large orders after seeing live demonstrations. In 1948 a smaller version, the Slinky Jr., was introduced.

Richard filed for a patent in 1946; it was granted in January 1947 (U.S. Patent 2,415,012), protecting both the design and the manufacturing process.

Get Me Out of Here

Richard and Betty were running a lean, hands-on operation. Richard eventually quit his engineering job to work on the Slinky full-time. The company was essentially a family enterprise with a small workforce.

Cash flowed in quickly, but so did the pressures of scaling: securing steady supplies of wire, maintaining quality, filling retail orders, and protecting the idea from imitators.

The postwar baby boom and the novelty of a simple, mechanical plaything that required no batteries helped fuel demand. By 1950 the Slinky was established as a national success, with production running smoothly in Pennsylvania and a growing reputation.

The next decade would bring product extensions (Slinky Dog in 1952, trains, and other variations) and, eventually, the personal and financial strains that would test the company in the late 1950s.

Richard, once focused on engineering, grew increasingly restless and spiritual. In 1960 he announced he was leaving—leaving the company, leaving the country, leaving Betty and their six children—to join a religious mission in Bolivia with Wycliffe Bible Translators.

He offered Betty a choice: liquidate everything or take full responsibility herself. Betty stood at the edge of collapse.

She was a single mother of six (the children then ranging from age 2 to 18), with no formal business training, facing creditors and a product that had lost momentum.

The easy path was to walk away.

Instead she chose the harder one. She mortgaged the family home, took control of the company, and refused to let the spring stop walking.

A Fresh Start

Under Betty’s leadership the company found new life.

She moved production to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, her hometown, where costs were lower and community ties ran deeper. She improved safety by crimping the ends of the coils and leaned into the quality that had always mattered: pure, simple motion that required nothing but gravity and a staircase.

A catchy television jingle in the early 1960s–“It’s Slinky, It’s Slinky–lodged the name in the minds of a new generation. Sales recovered, then soared. Betty paid off the debts. She kept the factory running with the same machines Richard had designed years earlier.

What had nearly vanished became durable again.

The world began to notice not just the walking spring, but the quiet determination of the woman who had refused to let it disappear.

Not Just A Toy

The Slinky refused to stay confined to its original purpose.

It became a teaching tool in physics classrooms, demonstrating waves, potential energy, and gravity. Astronauts later took versions into space to play with in zero gravity.

In 1995 it walked into popular culture as Slinky Dog in Pixar’s Toy Story, introducing the spring to millions of children who had never seen the original.

Over the decades more than 300 million have been sold. The factory in Hollidaysburg still produces them today—roughly three million a year—using methods that have barely changed since the 1940s.

The metal coil remains one of the rare classic American products still made in the United States. Plastic versions, giant versions, and licensed characters have appeared, but the original walking spring endures.

What began as a wartime engineering problem became a symbol of play that needs no batteries, no screens, and no instructions—only a staircase and a little curiosity.

Leaving a Legacy

This is not primarily a story about invention or even commercial success. It is about the difference between creating something and sustaining it. Richard James had the spark of discovery and the initial excitement.

Betty James had the endurance. One person can notice a surprising motion in a falling spring. Another person, facing loneliness, debt, and the ordinary weight of raising six children alone, can decide that the motion is still worth protecting.

You no doubt are familiar with the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Ben Franklin but not so much with the other three. Ada Lovelace was gifted in mathematics, poetry, computer science and mechanics. Ibn Sina’s skill was in the fields of medicine, astronomy, geology and logic.

As for Joseph Priestly … he was gifted in grammar, theology, philosophy, politics and chemistry. And we can thank Joseph for inventing carbonation.

You see, Joseph just happened to live near a beer brewery in his hometown of Leeds, England. One day he noticed a heavy layer of gas hovering above the beer vats—what chemists then called “fixed air.”

Fascinated by what he saw, Joseph suspended a bowl of water over the vat and poured it back and forth between two glasses to trap the gas. When he tasted the water, it had a pleasant, acidic tang and a light fizz.

In 1772, he published a scientific paper, Impregnating Water with Fixed Air. To Joseph this was more than a scientific breakthrough, it was a chance to use carbonation to cure scurvy–something sailors often developed on long ocean journeys.

Of course it didn’t because the ailment is caused by a lack of vitamin C.

A New Kind of Drink

However Joseph’s invention set off one of the biggest shifts in the beverage history. What started as a laboratory experiment in gas chemistry turned into a global obsession with sparkling drinks.

But this intense attraction with bottled soda water had major drawbacks back then: early heavy glass bottles frequently exploded under gas pressure, corks leaked, and distribution was limited. Heavy soda fountains were expensive and restricted to urban drugstores.

So chemists created powered versions of sodas made of tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate. When dissolved together in a glass of water, the acid reacted instantly with the bicarbonate base, releasing carbon dioxide gas () directly in the glass.

Then manufacturers added sugar, citrus acid, and flavor essences to create instant at-home lemonades and flavored tonics.

The invention of carbonation and powered drinks is what also gave birth to the frozen summertime treat that children all over the world love: popsicles.

And while you probably know the flavors and the brands like Good Humor, Nestle, and Blue Bell you might not know who actually invented them. And that Dear Reader is what we’re going to explore in this issue of Just One Good Idea.

A Small Town Boy

Established in 1891, the town of Willows California was a railroad stop surrounded by wheat fields, ranches, and emerging irrigated farmland.

Some of the roads were still dirt while others were freshly paved. Look left or right and you’d see modest wooden homes, store fronts, and the occasional brick building, all of which formed the downtown area.

Willow trees (which gave the town its name) dotted the landscape, offering shade along creeks and sloughs. Dust kicked up from horse-drawn wagons and buggies. In spring, orchards and wildflowers added splashes of color; in fall, harvest machinery and stacked grain sacks filled the fields.

The town was always busy and noisy.

Roosters crowed at dawn, cattle lowed in distant pastures, and children’s laughter mixed with the hammer of blacksmiths or the chatter of merchants. And of course you would hear train whistles that pierced the air as the Southern Pacific Railroad brought goods, passengers, and news from Sacramento or Redding.

This is the town where Francis William Epperson, also known as Frank, was born on August 11, 1894. His father was Henry Thorpe Epperson and made a living as a farm hand or sometimes a day laborer. His mother Hetty Cray was a stay-at-home mom who spent her days taking care of their rather large family.

Frank’s family wasn’t wealthy and they lived modestly. Yet they were a true representation of everyday, hardworking Americans.

While little Frank might have helped his parents out with chores around the house, he was an inquisitive kid. I can’t really tell you much about his education because there’s not much written about it, but I do know that he didn’t have any advanced formal science training or knowledge of chemistry.

But he was curious to know how things worked and why. And that curiosity led him to create what he called a “frozen ice on a stick.”

Oddly enough, it all happened by accident.

A Child’s Delicious Delight

It was one of those rare, biting winter nights in the Sacramento Valley when the usual mild California dampness gave way to a sharp, unexpected cold. The air carried the clean, earthy scent of recent rain mixed with the faint, dry sweetness of harvested fields and the smoky tang of wood fires from neighboring homes.

Frank had been outside playing but as dusk fell, he made his way inside the house. He ate dinner and then was getting ready for bed but before doing so, he decided to make a glass of soda water using the powdered mix version.

He poured the water in with the mix and stirred the mixture with a small wooden stick.

But for some unknown reason he didn’t drink the beverage. Instead he put the glass, with the small stick still inside, out on the front porch. The temperature in the area that evening dropped to an unusually low number.

In the morning when young Frank opened the door to retrieve his drink, he found that it was frozen solid. Wanting to know how this now frozen drink would taste, he ran the glass under hot water, pulled out the frozen block by the stick and licked it.

It was refreshing and delicious—a handheld, mess-free frozen treat. So over the next few nights he made more frozen treats. He gave them to his siblings and his friends. And each time he heard the same thing, “these are delicious.”

Frank continued making the treats informally for several years. It wasn’t until he was as an adult with his own family to care for that he saw the commercial potential for magical tasting treat he had created as a child.

So Frank began selling the treats at local spots like Neptune Beach (the “West Coast Coney Island”) for a nickel each. And they were a huge hit. They were so popular, Frank was selling thousands in a single day at times. Some records report that he sold as many as 8,000 in one day.

Because of the growing popularity for his treat, in 1923–1924 he pursued a patent. On June 11, 1924 (granted August 19, 1924, as U.S. Patent 1,505,592), he protected his “frozen ice on a stick.” The patent even specified suitable woods for the stick, such as birch or poplar.

Call It What It Is

For the longest time, Frank called his treats Epsicles (a blend of Epperson and icicle.”) But his children called them something different.

Whenever they wanted one, they would ask for Pop’s sicle. And when other kids asked what they were eating, they would answer the same way – Pop’s sicle.

So it was only naturally that Frank changed the name to Popsicles.

Although the treats were selling well, Frank operated his business on a small scale. He sold the treats at local beaches, amusement parks and a few stores. He never built a massive manufacturing facility even though the popsicles were extremely popular. However, demand was growing faster than he could manage alone.

Not unlike many small business owners, Frank began to run into money problems. He needed cash to keep up the pace at which he was selling the popsicles. He was no longer freezing glasses of the mixed soda on his front porch.

The truth is making frozen treats on a bigger scale in the 1920s was expensive. You needed reliable refrigeration (ice houses or early mechanical systems), molds, packaging, and distribution networks.

The financial pressure had been building like a slow tide. With ten children to feed, clothe, and house, the modest profits from beach sales covered daily life but left almost nothing for the kind of expansion that would secure their future.

You can just image how Frank lay awake at night, staring at the ceiling, the distant sound of waves mixing with the soft breathing of his children in the next room. The invention that had started as a boy’s happy accident now carried the hopes—and fears—of an entire household.

Then came the offer from the Joe Lowe Company. Representatives from the New York-based bakery and ice cream firm had taken notice of the buzzing popularity on the West Coast. They saw national potential in this convenient, handheld frozen treat.

They made Frank an offer: a lump sum for the patent and rights, along with the infrastructure and capital to turn his creation into something much larger. It was tempting—a chance to wipe the slate clean, pay off debts, and provide security for his family.

But it also meant letting go.

This thing he had nurtured from a frozen glass on a cold porch, the treat his own children had nicknamed “Popsicle,” would no longer be fully his.

Frank wrestled with the decision in the quiet hours. Selling felt like surrender, like admitting he couldn’t carry it forward himself. Continuing alone risked everything—losing the house, the business, the stability he had worked so hard to build.

The broader economy was showing cracks; agriculture in California was volatile, and personal finances were stretched thin. “I was flat,” he would later say, “and had to liquidate all my assets.”

In the end, the turning point came not with a triumphant expansion, but with a painful choice. Frank signed the papers. The Joe Lowe Company took ownership, and the Popsicle began its journey toward becoming a national sensation.

For Frank, it brought immediate relief but also a lingering ache—the inventor who sparked a cultural icon, yet watched it soar under someone else’s wings.

From Frozen Treat to Beyond

After Frank Epperson sold the rights, the Popsicle did not simply survive — it exploded into a cultural phenomenon under the stewardship of the Joe Lowe Company. What had been a promising local treat from the beaches of Northern California became a nationwide sensation almost overnight.

The Joe Lowe Company with deep experience in baked goods and frozen novelties, immediately recognized the potential. They invested in modern production facilities, professional marketing, and a national distribution network that Epperson could never have built on his own.

Within a few years, Popsicles were being manufactured in multiple flavors (cherry remained the perennial favorite), packaged appealingly, and shipped across the country. The treat found its way into amusement parks, corner stores, ice cream trucks, and soda fountains from coast to coast.

One of their smartest moves came during the darkest days of the Great Depression. Joe Lowe introduced the twin-bar Popsicle — two sticks connected in one package. For the same nickel price, families could share one treat between two children.

It was a stroke of marketing genius and empathy that perfectly matched the economic hardship of the era. Sales soared. Children across America grew up licking the sweet, icy fruit flavor while the wooden sticks became makeshift toys or bookmarks. The company expanded the line with single bars, juice-filled varieties, and creative flavors, always keeping the product affordable and fun.

By the mid-1930s, the Popsicle brand had become a household name. The Joe Lowe Company (and later corporate successors) turned the humble ice pop into a multi-million-dollar business. While exact early profit figures are not publicly detailed, industry reports and brand histories show that Popsicles generated tens of millions of dollars in revenue over the following decades.

At its peak under corporate ownership, the brand was selling hundreds of millions of units annually. Today, under Unilever, the Popsicle brand produces billions of units worldwide each year and remains one of the most recognized frozen treat names globally.

Here, the air didn’t smell like ocean salt; it smelled of scorching coal, rendered lard, and caramelized sugar. In 1871, a civil war veteran named William Russell Frisbie took over a local bakery, christening it the Frisbie Pie Company.

To transport these heavy, molten desserts without them collapsing, William designed a specialized container: a rigid, circular pie pan pressed out of heavy tin, stamped boldly at the bottom with the words: Frisbie Pie Co.

The magic of the Frisbie tin wasn’t discovered by corporate executives, but by the consumer friction of hungry, bored college students at nearby Yale, Dartmouth, and Princeton.

By the early 20th century, delivery trucks were dropping off stacks of Frisbie pies at campus dining halls. Once the students devoured the sweet contents, they were left with a heavy, perfectly balanced tin disc.

On the front lines, Allied soldiers were using heavy artillery and long-range rifles equipped with clunky, primitive sighting mechanisms. If a soldier could not aim accurately through the smoke, rain, and chaos of a muddy trench, the battle was lost before it even began.

The pressure from Washington was immense: give our soldiers an optical edge. The military issued an urgent mandate to defense contractors and industrial laboratories across the country, demanding the creation of a perfectly crystal-clear, shatterproof plastic.

This material was not meant for consumer comfort; it was destined for the assembly of precision military gunsights. The material needed to be easily molded, optically flawless, and entirely unyielding under the punishing vibrations of combat.

In research laboratories across the United States, chemists worked late into the night, mixing polymers, measuring light refraction, and testing chemical bonds. They were hyper-focused on visibility, clarity, and structural resilience.

The goal was sight.

No one within the military high command, and certainly no one sitting in a corporate boardroom, was looking for a way to bind the physical world together.

They wanted to see through the glass, completely blind to the fact that the greatest breakthrough of the era would come from a substance that refused to let go of anything it touched.

Crushing Deadlines

Standing at the center of this high-stakes industrial scramble was Dr. Harry Wesley Coover Jr.

Born in Newark, Delaware, Coover was a young, brilliant organic chemist who had earned his master’s degree and PhD from Cornell University. He approached science not with the detached abstraction of an academic, but with the practical, dogged curiosity of a true industrial inventor.

By the time the war reached its pitch, Coover was working as a research chemist for the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York, a major supplier for the war effort.

Coover was struggling under the relentless, crushing pressure of wartime production deadlines. Every day, his team was tasked with evaluating exotic chemical compounds to see if they could be cast into pristine optical lenses.

He was a man deeply embedded in the physical reality of the laboratory—he understood the volatile behavior of monomers, the delicate balance of chemical synthesis, and the frustration of failed experiments.

While his contemporaries looked at the war through the lens of macro-logistics and heavy machinery, Coover was a micro-observer. He was intensely attuned to the strange, unexpected anomalies that occurred at the bottom of a test tube, always watching for the one bizarre detail that everyone else was too busy to notice.

Just Too Sticky

The discovery of the idea did not arrive with a celebratory toast or a neat presentation; it began as a frustrating, destructive mess that threatened to ruin an entire afternoon of laboratory testing.

While experimenting with a highly volatile class of chemicals known as cyanoacrylates, Coover and his team synthesized a specific formulation designed to be molded into clear gunsight components.

They poured the liquid compound into their expensive, precision testing equipment to measure its light refraction.

The result was an immediate disaster.

The moment the liquid touched the laboratory apparatus, it did not form a smooth, clean plastic lens. Instead, it bonded instantly and fiercely to everything it contacted. The optical equipment was locked tight, frozen solid by a chemical reaction that occurred without any added heat, pressure, or curing catalysts.

They tried to pull the components apart, but the bond was unyielding; the expensive machinery was permanently ruined, transformed into a useless block of fused glass and metal.

Coover’s assistants were deeply annoyed, wiping their hands and tossing the fouled materials into the trash bin. The substance was deemed a total failure for the military project because it was simply “too sticky” to be handled on an assembly line.

The chemical reacted aggressively to the microscopic layer of moisture present on virtually every physical surface, polymerizing into an unbreakable chain in a matter of seconds. Because it failed to solve the specific problem of the wartime gunsight, Coover had no choice but to shelve the compound.

The fragile idea was cast aside, a forgotten footnote in a wartime archive, labeled as nothing more than an inconvenient lab hazard.

Bonded Together Forever

The moment the story could have died completely came nine years later, in 1951. The war was long over, and Coover had been transferred to an Eastman Kodak chemical plant in Kingsport, Tennessee.

The corporate landscape had shifted; America was now entering the jet age, and the military was facing a new crisis: designing supersonic aircraft.

Dr. Harry Coover was overseeing a team of Kodak chemists researching heat-resistant polymers capable of enduring the extreme friction experienced by jet airplane canopies.

During a series of routine evaluations, a colleague named Fred Joyner took a sample of the old cyanoacrylate monomer composition and spread a thin layer between two expensive glass refractometer prisms to test its heat tolerance.

History repeated itself with brutal precision. The two prisms bonded instantly, cementing themselves together with such ferocity that the scientists realized they had just destroyed another costly piece of laboratory equipment.

Joyner came to Coover’s office, dejected and preparing to apologize for the expensive mistake. This was the ultimate turning point. A rigid manager would have reprimanded the chemist for wasting resources, thrown out the ruined prisms, and demanded the team return to the jet canopy guidelines.

But Coover froze.

He looked at the fused glass prisms and had a flash of profound insight: this wasn’t an annoying failure. It was the strongest, fastest-acting adhesive the world had ever seen—a substance that required no heat, no clamping, and no drying time to create a permanent bond.

Coover made a bold, incredibly risky pitch to the conservative executives at Eastman Kodak. He argued that the company should step completely outside its traditional photography comfort zone and enter the industrial adhesive market.

The corporate board was highly skeptical; they were in the business of film and cameras, not household chemicals. But Coover was persistent, demonstrating the compound’s surreal strength by bonding everyday items together in front of the executives.

He fought through the corporate red tape, secured patent number 2,768,109, and convinced the company to back his sticky anomaly.

I Have a Secret

The breakthrough finally gained momentum when the product hit the market in 1958 under the unassuming industrial name “Eastman 910”. Initially, the public and industrial manufacturers didn’t believe the marketing claims; a glue that bonded things permanently in three seconds sounded like science fiction or a carnival trick.

To break through the wall of consumer disbelief, Coover became a brilliant, unexpected showman. He secured a spot on the popular, nationally televised game show I’ve Got a Secret.

In front of a live studio audience and millions of viewers watching at home, Coover placed a single, tiny drop of his liquid adhesive onto a steel cylinder, pressed it against a matching metal plate for a few brief seconds, and then used a crane to lift the show’s host, Garry Moore, completely off the ground.

The jaw-dropping television demonstration ignited a national obsession. The world began to realize that this “failed” gunsight material was an absolute household necessity.

Eastman Kodak rebranded the compound into a catchy name that would define an entire industry: Super Glue. Suddenly, manufacturing plants were using it to assemble automobiles, electronics, and appliances.

Everyday consumers rushed to buy the tiny tubes to rescue broken coffee mugs, torn shoes, and fractured toys. The accidental compound had officially conquered the global market.

The Battlefield Glue

The true consequences of Harry Coover’s melted lab equipment traveled far beyond the borders of household repair and corporate profit. The ultimate ripple effect occurred on the bloody, humid battlefields of the Vietnam War.

As combat medics struggled to treat soldiers deep in the jungle, they faced a horrific reality: young men were rapidly bleeding to death from shrapnel and bullet wounds before they could ever be transported to a proper field hospital.

Conventional needles and sutures were too slow and impossible to apply cleanly while taking enemy fire in a muddy swamp. Coover had previously realized that cyanoacrylate could bond living tissue, securing a separate patent for its use as a human hemostat.

Militaries quickly capitalized on this trait, issuing combat medics a special, modified spray version of Coover’s super glue. When a soldier suffered an open, catastrophic abdominal or chest wound, the medic would simply wipe away the excess blood and spray the liquid adhesive directly onto the torn internal organs and skin.

The glue reacted instantly with the moisture of the human body, sealing the lacerations shut and stopping the fatal bleeding in a matter of seconds. It kept the soldier alive long enough to make it to a surgeon’s table.

This saved thousands of lives, eventually forcing the medical establishment and the FDA to rethink wound care entirely. Today, advanced derivatives of that exact same formulation are used globally in suture less surgeries, ophthalmic procedures, and emergency rooms.
