Not the stillness of someone waiting for something to happen.</p><p>The stillness of listening.</p><p>She thought about Elias at the anvil.</p><p>The way he had stood with the hammer at rest and his head slightly tilted, not looking at the metal but attending to it. She had noticed it without understanding it at the time. The quality of his attention. How it was not focused in the way concentration is usually focused, narrowed and directed like light through a lens. It was wider than that. Softer around the edges. Not guttered. Not gone. Just shorter than it had been, its wax pooled in a slow ring around the base, its flame burning with the same steady patience as before.</p><p>Juniper looked at it for a long time.</p><p>She did not know how much time had passed.</p>

Not with the momentum of decision. Just one foot and then the other, the stone smooth beneath her boots, the light from the hall growing warmer with each step until she could feel it against her face the way you feel sun through a window in winter.</p><p>She stopped at the edge of the arch.</p><p>Not inside. Not outside.</p><p>The threshold itself.</p><p>The stone of the arch rose above her, wide and unhurried, its curve generous rather than imposing. Up close she could see the detail of it. Carvings along the inner edge, shallow and worn, figures she could not fully make out but which suggested movement. People at tables. Hands reaching. Cups lifted. The same gesture repeated in variation along the full length of the curve above her head.</p><p>She did not reach up to touch them.</p><p>She stood and looked at what was in front of her.</p>

The light through the tall windows. The movement of figures inside. The arch of the entrance with its warm unguarded opening.</p><p>The footsteps slowed behind her.</p><p>Then stopped.</p><p>&#8220;You found it,&#8221; Elias said.</p><p>Juniper turned.</p>
