But if you own stocks, especially growth and technology stocks, what is happening in the US bond market could matter to you.

Over the past two weeks, yields on the 20-year and 30-year US Treasury bonds moved above the psychologically important 5% mark.

The interesting part?

This wasn’t triggered by a Federal Reserve rate decision.

It happened after a US Treasury bond auction.

And that tells us something important about what is happening beneath the surface.

First, what exactly is a bond yield?

Let’s keep this simple.

When the US government needs money, it borrows by selling bonds to investors.

In return, investors expect to earn a return on that money.

That return is broadly reflected in the bond yield.

So, when we say:

“The US 10-year Treasury yield has risen”

it simply means investors are demanding a higher return to lend money to the US government for 10 years.

And this is where things get interesting.

Why did yields suddenly move above 5%?

The trigger was an auction of $16 billion worth of 20-year US Treasury bonds.

The bonds were sold at a yield of 5.047%, which was higher than the market had expected.

There was another important signal in the auction:

Foreign buyers were noticeably less enthusiastic than usual.

Think about it this way.

The US government is selling bonds and investors are the buyers.

If there are plenty of buyers, the government doesn’t have to offer a very high return.

But if buyers become less willing to buy, the seller has to offer a better deal.

In the bond market, that better deal comes in the form of a higher yield.

So weak demand → higher required yield → bond yields move higher.

And that is essentially what the market was telling us.

But why should a stock market investor care?

This is the most important part.

You might be thinking:

“I invest in equities. Why should I care about US government bonds?”

Because US Treasury yields influence how investors value almost everything else.

Think of US government bonds as the benchmark for a relatively risk-free return.

If investors can earn around 5% from lending money to the US government for the long term, they may become less willing to pay extremely high prices for riskier investments.

This becomes particularly important for growth stocks.

Why?

Because a large part of a growth company’s value may come from profits that are expected several years into the future.

When interest rates and bond yields rise, those future profits become less valuable when converted into today’s money.

You don’t need to understand the mathematics behind this to understand the basic idea:

Higher long-term yields can put pressure on equity valuations, particularly expensive growth stocks.

And there is another reason.

If a government bond is offering a much higher return, some investors may decide:

“Why take a lot of equity risk when I can get a relatively attractive return from government debt?”

That can pull money away from equities.

So the simple transmission mechanism is:

Bond yields ↑ → Equity valuations come under pressure

And the pressure can be greater in the expensive, high-growth parts of the market.

So what did Washington do?

This is where the story gets interesting.

The headlines may make it sound like the Federal Reserve stepped in.

It didn’t.

This was the US Treasury Department, under Secretary Scott Bessent.

The Treasury announced that it would at least double the size of its buyback operations in longer-dated bonds, from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation, through early November.

Sounds complicated?

Here’s the simple version.

Imagine a shopkeeper has a lot of goods to sell, but suddenly there are fewer customers willing to buy them.

One way to support demand is for the shopkeeper himself to start buying some of that inventory.

That is broadly what the Treasury is doing.

The US government is buying back some of its own longer-term debt from the market.

Why?

To create additional demand for those bonds.

More demand can help push bond prices higher.

And remember the important relationship:

Bond prices ↑ → Bond yields ↓

So the Treasury is essentially trying to put downward pressure on long-term yields without changing the Fed’s policy rate.

Did it work?

Initially, yes.

Yields dipped after the announcement.

But the relief didn’t last very long.

Within a day, yields started moving back above where they had been.

Why?

Because investors immediately started asking a very reasonable question:

“Is $4 billion per operation really enough?”

The US government’s debt pile has now crossed $40 trillion.

Against a debt mountain of that size, a $4 billion operation may not look like enough to fundamentally change the supply-demand equation.

The Treasury is reportedly considering using its nearly $1 trillion general account for additional firepower.

That tells us one thing:

This battle isn’t over.

This is the distinction investors need to understand

This is not the same thing as the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates.

A Fed rate cut is a monetary policy action.

It can influence borrowing costs and financial conditions across the economy.

What the Treasury is doing here is different.

It is trying to influence the demand for its longer-term bonds.

Think of it as:

Fed rate cut = addressing financial conditions more broadly

Treasury buyback = trying to support demand for specific government bonds

That’s why I would look at the Treasury’s action as more of a patch than a cure.

It may help control the symptom — rising long-term yields.

But it doesn’t necessarily address the underlying issue:

How much government debt does the market have to absorb, and at what price?

If the underlying supply-demand imbalance remains, the market may eventually demand higher yields again.

What does the chart tell us?

The macro story is one side of the equation.

Price action is the other.

The US 20-year Treasury yield is currently around 5.212%, but the chart shows a potentially important resistance zone near 5.388%.

That level deserves attention because if yields approach this resistance and fail to break above it, we could see a reversal in yields.

In simple terms:

The story may be about rising yields — but the chart is telling us not to assume that the rise will continue indefinitely

If yields move towards 5.388% and face strong selling, the next move could potentially be lower.

And that would change the interpretation for equity markets.

Instead of:

Yields ↑ → Equity valuations under pressure

we could potentially see:

Yields hit resistance → Yields ↓ → Pressure on equity valuations eases

This is where the macro and technical pictures become particularly interesting.

And the same setup appears in the US 30-year yield.

What makes this even more interesting is that the US 30-year yield is showing a similar technical setup, with a major resistance zone overhead. So while the bond market is currently flashing a warning about rising long-term yields, the charts are also telling us to watch for a potential reversal. The next few sessions could therefore be less about the absolute level of yields and more about how price behaves around these resistance zones.

Why should an Indian investor care?

Now we bring this back home.

Global markets are connected.

When US long-term yields rise sharply, the impact can travel through several channels.

One of the first places to look is the US dollar.

A stronger dollar can make global investors more defensive.

That can influence foreign institutional investor flows into emerging markets such as India.

And when global investors become more cautious, some of the expensive or globally sensitive parts of the Indian market can feel the pressure first.

Nifty IT, for example, is one segment worth watching because of its global earnings exposure and relatively high valuations in parts of the sector.

This doesn’t mean:

US yields rise → Nifty falls.

Markets are never that simple.

Instead, think of it as a macro backdrop.

When US long-term yields remain elevated, the environment can become less friendly for expensive growth assets globally.

So what should you watch?

The question isn’t simply:

“Are US yields above 5%?”

Instead, watch what they do around 5.4%.

If US long-term yields continue moving higher, the pressure can eventually find its way into global equity valuations.

And that is why a bond market event that initially appears completely unrelated to Indian equities deserves our attention.

The bond market doesn’t usually make front-page news in India.

But this time, it’s worth looking at.

Not because there is a specific target to hit.

But because understanding why yields are moving can help us understand what to watch next.

Most traders already know the greatest hits. Engulfing candles, hammers, shooting stars, morning and evening stars, dojis — these get taught early, and for good reason: they work. We’ll come back to the nuances of some of these in this space at some point. But today, I want to talk about one that doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves — the kicker formation.

Why I Keep Coming Back to This Pattern

Here’s the thing about the kicker: it’s a high-probability signal that most retail traders have simply never been taught to look for. That alone makes it worth your attention — a pattern fewer people are watching for is a pattern the market hasn’t fully priced discovery into. Add to that: it works across daily, weekly, monthly, and even quarterly timeframes. It tends to produce high-conviction reversals rather than the wishy-washy kind that fail half the time. And unlike many patterns that need three other confirmations to mean anything, the kicker can stand on its own as a setup worth studying — something we’ll get into a little further down.

First, though, the formation itself.

The Bullish Kicker

Picture two candles. The first is a strong bearish candle — bears fully in control, sellers pressing the close lower with conviction. Then, overnight or across the next session, sentiment flips. The second candle opens with a gap up and closes strongly bullish, often with barely any wick to show for it.

That’s not indecision. That’s a sudden, forceful change of hands. Bears owned the tape on day one; bulls dominate from the very open on day two. You’ll typically spot this setup forming near demand zones — exactly where you’d expect fresh buying interest to step in hard.

The Bearish Kicker

Flip it. A strong bullish candle — bulls confident, price closing near the highs — followed by a gap-down open and a strong bearish close. Confidence evaporates overnight, replaced by a supply shock sellers are all too happy to press. This one tends to show up near supply zones, where the crowd that was chasing the move suddenly finds itself trapped.

What to Look For on the Chart

A genuine kicker isn’t just “a red candle followed by a green one.” A few conditions separate the real thing from noise:

• Two strong, opposite candles — not indecisive ones

• A clear gap between the previous close and the current open, though see the note below

• A second candle with a strong body and minimal retracement — no long wicks eating into conviction

• Appears near a defined demand or supply zone, not in the middle of nowhere

This works best on the daily timeframe, and it tends to lose reliability in sideways, low-conviction markets — the kind where every pattern throws off false signals.

The Gap Isn’t Actually Mandatory

Here’s the nuance most explanations skip: a clean gap makes the kicker stronger, but it isn’t the strict requirement. The real condition is simpler — for a bullish kicker, the open of the green candle needs to sit above the open of the prior red candle. For a bearish kicker, the open of the red candle needs to sit below the open of the prior green candle. A visible gap is the best version of this, but the pattern remains valid without one, as long as that open-to-open condition holds.

Based on my own study of this pattern, here’s the broader structure I look for before treating it as meaningful: a minimum of three consecutive candles in one direction or a broad uptrend/downtrend, followed by an opposite candle whose open clears the prior candle’s body, closing with strong conviction — not a doji, not a spinning top, not a long-wicked hesitation candle. The cleaner the open gap and the stronger the closing body, the more weight the signal carries.

Entry – On close of the Kicker formation or next days open

Closing Thoughts

The kicker formation won’t show up every week, and that’s exactly the point — infrequency is what keeps it honest. In a market full of setups that trigger constantly and fail just as often, a pattern that only speaks up occasionally, and speaks with this much conviction when it does, deserves a spot on your watchlist.

What Is It, Really?

Here’s the part that surprised me while digging into this: there isn’t one official “AI Adoption Index” the way there’s one Nifty 50. It’s a category of frameworks, each built by a different institution to measure the same thing — how deeply a company or economy has actually integrated AI into its operations, versus just announcing a pilot project.

The most India-relevant version is the NASSCOM AI Adoption Index, built with Microsoft, EY, Capgemini and EXL. Globally, IBM’s Global AI Adoption Index tracks enterprise uptake across markets. More recently, growth-equity firm ICONIQ launched its own version focused on operational outcomes — ticket resolution rates, headcount efficiency, sales cycle compression — the kind of granular detail that tells you AI is actually changing how a business runs, not just its investor deck.

When Was It Formed, and Why?

NASSCOM’s version launched in 2018 and was rebuilt as Index 2.0 in 2024, expanding from four sectors to seven, covering 500 companies and roughly 75% of India’s GDP. The objective was straightforward: give policymakers and investors an objective, survey-based score — India currently sits at 2.47 on a 4-point maturity scale — instead of relying on anecdote or marketing language to judge how “AI-ready” the economy actually is.

How Investors Can Use It

This is where it gets interesting for us. Think of it the way ESG scoring worked a decade ago. ESG started as a compliance checkbox, then slowly became a factor serious investors screened for. AI adoption scoring is following the same arc — right now it’s mostly sector-level and macro, but the direction of travel is toward company-level scoring that feeds into stock selection.

For a retail investor, the practical takeaway isn’t “buy the AI adoption leaders.” It’s sharper than that: use adoption data as a filter for durability of a company’s competitive edge. A company with genuine AI integration in its cost structure — not just a slide about it — is one where margin expansion has a real driver behind it, not just a re-rating story.

How Fund Managers and Analysts Use It

Analysts are increasingly splitting AI-exposed companies into two buckets — enablers (building the infrastructure: chips, cloud, data centers) and adopters (companies using AI to cut costs or grow revenue in their existing business — retail, financial services, logistics). Adoption indices help place a company correctly in that bucket, because the market often prices “AI enablers” aggressively while overlooking quiet “adopters” whose earnings are already benefiting.

Some research desks are also going a level deeper — using NLP models to scan 10-K and annual report filings, scoring companies by how often and how substantively they discuss AI engagement, rather than trusting management commentary at face value. That’s a meaningfully more rigorous approach than a checkbox survey.

What the Index Can’t Tell You

Here’s the honest caveat worth sitting with. If you’re a fund manager trying to answer a specific question — is this company using AI to cut costs, and is that showing up in its margins — a sector-level index like NASSCOM’s won’t get you there directly. It tells you BFSI as a whole scores 2.42 on AI maturity, or that CPG and Retail companies are broadly leaning on AI for demand forecasting. It doesn’t tell you whether a specific stock in your portfolio has actually converted that into a cost advantage.

That work still falls to old-fashioned diligence: specific, numbers-backed AI commentary in earnings calls versus vague “digital transformation” language; checking whether margin trends actually shift in the quarters after a company claims to deploy AI in a cost center; and using the index as a benchmark rather than a verdict — if a company claims to be ahead of the curve in a sector the index still shows at an early “Enthusiast” stage, that’s a reality check worth running before you believe the story.

The One Thing Worth Remembering

An adoption score is a fundamental signal — it tells you why a company might re-rate. It’s not a timing tool. That’s exactly the kind of input that should inform your fundamental view of a stock, while your technical read still tells you when the market starts pricing that story in. Why versus when — same framework, new data source.

That’s what the chart is for. Two weeks ago, the US and Japan stepped in with a rare, coordinated intervention to prop up the yen — the kind of move meant to cool a carry trade before it gets out of hand again. On the surface, that should have weakened the dollar against the yen. It hasn’t. USD/JPY is back near 159.31, closing in on its worst week against the dollar since mid-May, as traders use every bout of yen strength as a chance to rebuild short positions rather than a reason to stay out.

What the Chart Is Actually Saying

This is where the chart adds something the intervention headlines can’t. USD/JPY has been testing its 200-day moving average — a widely watched long-term trend line, currently at 157.80 — and rather than breaking down, it’s holding. The candles around this level are showing consecutive lower wicks, meaning every attempt to push price below 157.80 has been rejected within the same session, with buyers stepping in before the close.

The monthly chart tells the same story from a different angle. The pair found support at its 20-month EMA and is bouncing from there too. Two different timeframes, converging on the same message: sellers keep testing this level, and it keeps holding.

The Framework From Here

This setup gives an unusually clean framework to work with. As long as 157.80 holds, the path of least resistance for the dollar against the yen is strength — the intervention notwithstanding. A decisive break and close below it is what would change that picture, opening the door to the next support zone at 152, and 145 below that if the selling extends.

It’s a level worth watching precisely because it’s binary. Recall from Part 1 that the real danger in a carry trade isn’t the currency move itself — it’s the crowded, leveraged unwind that follows once a level like this actually breaks. A hold at 157.80 says that unwind isn’t imminent. A clean break says the trade discussed in Part 1 could be entering exactly that phase.

What This Means for Indian Markets

So why should a Nifty or BankNifty trader care about a Japanese moving average? Because as Part 1 laid out, yen carry unwinds don’t stay contained to Japan. When the trade unwinds hard, as it did in August 2024, leveraged funds don’t just sell yen positions — they cut risk everywhere, including emerging market equities. India, as one of the more liquid EM markets, tends to feel that de-risking even when nothing has fundamentally changed domestically.

The reassuring part of the current setup is the muted reaction so far. Broader emerging market carry trades have barely moved since the intervention began, a far smaller wobble than the shock in 2024 — consistent with what we noted in Part 1 about the trade being funded more broadly across the euro and Swiss franc this time, not just the yen. That doesn’t remove the risk. It just lowers the odds of a violent, indiscriminate unwind hitting Indian markets out of nowhere.

The practical takeaway: this isn’t a level Indian traders need to track daily, but it’s worth keeping on the radar alongside your usual Nifty and BankNifty levels. A clean break of 157.80 on USD/JPY would be an early signal of renewed carry unwind stress — the kind of macro trigger that shows up in FII flow data and index volatility before it shows up in any domestic headline.

Putting Both Parts Together

Part 1 explained why the yen carry trade works until it doesn’t. Part 2 is the chart telling you, in real time, whether “until it doesn’t” is close or still some distance away. Right now, 157.80 is the line doing that job. As long as it holds, the story is orderly. If it breaks, watch for the same crowded unwind dynamic from Part 1 to start showing up — not just in USD/JPY, but in how global risk assets, India included, start trading around it.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series on the yen carry trade — a story that’s been quietly driving global market moves for years, and one that’s back in the headlines right now. Part 1 breaks down what the trade actually is, in plain terms, for anyone who’s heard the phrase without quite knowing what it means. Part 2 picks up from there with the current setup on USD/JPY — what the chart is showing, the key levels in play, and what it could mean for Indian markets.

What Is a Carry Trade, Really?

Strip away the jargon and a carry trade is a simple idea: borrow money where it’s cheap, invest it where it earns more, and pocket the difference. Currencies work like any other loan — some come with near-zero interest, others come with meaningfully higher rates. If you can borrow in the cheap one and invest in the expensive one, the gap between the two is yours to keep.

The yen has been the funding currency of choice for this trade for decades, simply because Japan kept interest rates near zero long after most major economies moved off it. That made yen the cheapest money in the world to borrow — and cheap money, once available at scale, always finds its way into higher-yielding bets elsewhere.

An Analogy That Makes It Click

Imagine a friend lends you ₹1,00,000 at almost no interest, because he’s happy to lend cheaply. You convert that into dollars and put it into a US instrument paying 5% for a year. A year later, your dollars have grown, you convert back to rupees, repay your friend his ₹1,00,000, and keep the difference. Free money — as long as the rupee doesn’t get expensive again by the time you need to convert back.

Now replace rupees with yen and dollars with US treasuries, and you have the actual trade. Borrow ¥1,000,000 at roughly 0% interest. At USD/JPY around 150, that converts to about $6,667. Park it in a bond paying 5%, and a year later it’s grown to roughly $7,000. Convert back at the same rate of 150, and you get ¥1,050,000 — repay the ¥1,000,000 loan, and you’ve pocketed ¥50,000, essentially for free, funded entirely by someone else’s cheap money.

That’s the trade working exactly as intended. The trouble starts the moment the assumption underneath it breaks.

What Happens When the Yen Strengthens

Say the yen strengthens sharply while your money is still invested, and USD/JPY drops from 160 to 140 — a real move, roughly what played out in July-Sept 2024. Your $7,000 now converts to only ¥910,000. You still owe the lender ¥1,000,000. Despite earning a clean 5% return on the dollar side, the currency move alone has put you ¥90,000 short of what you owe. The trade didn’t fail because the investment was bad — it failed because the currency it was funded in moved against you faster than the return could offset.

Why a Currency Move Turns Into a Market Crash

Here’s the part that matters most, and the part that’s easy to miss: a single investor losing money on a currency swing doesn’t move global markets. What moves markets is scale and leverage. Thousands of funds ran this exact trade for years, and many of them borrowed far more yen than they held in collateral — turning a modest currency move into an outsized loss on their books. When the yen strengthens, all of them face the same problem at the same time, and all of them rush to do the same thing: sell their dollar assets and buy back yen to close the gap before it widens further.

That simultaneous, crowded unwind is what spilled into equities and bonds far beyond Japan in August 2024 — the Nikkei alone fell over 12% in a single session, its worst day since 1987. The currency move was the spark. The leverage built on top of it is what turned a spark into a global sell-off.

One More Thing Worth Knowing

The yen isn’t the only funding currency in play. This year, a meaningful share of carry trades have shifted to being funded in euros and Swiss francs instead, precisely because investors got burned by how sharply the yen can move. That diversification matters — it means the next yen wobble may not carry the same shock value it did in 2024, simply because less of the world’s leverage is sitting on that single trade. It doesn’t remove the risk. It just means the size of the crowd that could get caught off guard has changed.

That’s the mechanism. In Part 2, we’ll look at where USD/JPY actually stands right now, the level it’s currently defending on the chart, and what that could mean for Indian markets if it breaks.

What Exactly Is an Upthrust?

Price pushes above a well-tested resistance level. Short sellers get stopped out. Breakout buyers pile in, convinced the level has finally given way. And then, without warning, price fails to hold the move and slides back below resistance.

The level didn't break. It absorbed the crowd that believed it would.

The Confirmation Rule

The same objective test from Part 1 applies here, just flipped. If price breaks above a resistance level and reverses back below it within 2 trading sessions on the daily chart, or within 2 weeks on the weekly chart, it qualifies as a probable upthrust. Beyond that window, treat it as a genuine breakout, not a trap.

This is what separates chart reading from chart guessing — a rule you can apply the same way every time, not a story you tell yourself after the fact.

Why Upthrusts Are Easier to Spot Than Springs

Here’s something that stood out while going through chart after chart for this series: upthrusts show up more often, and more visibly, than springs do.

The likely reason isn’t that greed overpowers fear. It’s simpler than that — uptrends attract a bigger crowd. More participation, more attention on new highs, more FOMO-driven entries piling in exactly when a level is being tested. Downtrends, by contrast, tend to thin out participation well before price reaches support, so a spring has a smaller crowd left to trap.

Same trap. Different crowd size. That’s why the upthrust tends to leave a louder footprint on the chart.

Low-Volume vs. Volume-Climax: Two Ways an Upthrust Forms

Not every upthrust looks the same on the tape. The volume behind the break tells you almost as much as the price action itself — and it tends to show up in one of two ways.

Low-volume upthrust: price pushes above resistance, but volume doesn’t confirm the move — it stays flat, or even contracts. That’s the tell. A breakout without participation is a breakout without conviction; the level is being tested by a shrinking pool of buyers, not a growing one. This variant is often the easier of the two to read early, because the absence of volume is itself the warning sign.

Chart 2: Low-volume upthrust example

Volume-climax upthrust: the opposite scenario — price pushes above resistance on a visible surge in volume, often the largest bar on the chart in weeks. This looks like conviction, but usually isn’t. A climax spike that size tends to mark exhaustion rather than strength — the last wave of buyers rushing in exactly as the move runs out of sellers willing to keep pushing higher. Once that buying gets absorbed, there’s nobody left to sustain the level, and price reverses.

What This Means for Positioning

An upthrust also creates a specific window in the options chain worth understanding. While price is still extended above resistance and sentiment hasn’t turned, call premiums tend to stay elevated — the crowd is still positioned for more upside. Puts, meanwhile, stay cheap, because very few participants are prepared for a reversal at that point.

That pricing gap between what the crowd expects and what the chart is actually signalling is exactly the kind of setup options-focused traders study closely — not as a trigger to act on blindly, but as a structure worth understanding before the reversal is confirmed.

Spring and Upthrust, Side by Side

Line the two up and the pattern is obvious. A spring cracks support, traps the sellers who believed it was gone, and reverses higher within the confirmation window. An upthrust cracks resistance, traps the buyers who believed it had finally broken out, and reverses lower within that same window. Different ends of the range, same underlying move — price dipping just far enough beyond a level to trigger stops and pull in a crowd, before snapping back to where it started.

That’s really what this two-part series has been about: training your eye to wait for the sweep, not just the break. A level breaking is only half the story — what happens in the two sessions after is what tells you whether it’s a genuine shift in structure or a trap dressed up as one. Apply that lens consistently, at support or resistance, on the daily or the weekly, and false breakouts stop being surprises. They start being setups you can actually plan around.

There’s a specific kind of frustration every trader knows. You buy near support, place your stop just below it, and for a while the trade behaves. Then, without warning, support gives way. Your stop gets hit. And within a session or two, the stock turns around and runs — without you.

Most people write this off as bad luck. Richard Wyckoff didn’t. He noticed this pattern was common enough, and specific enough, that it deserved a name: the spring. Not every break of support qualifies. That distinction is really the whole ballgame, and it’s where this piece begins.

What a Spring actually means?

A spring is a false breakdown. Price dips below an established support level, looks convincing enough to shake out existing longs and pull in fresh shorts, and then fails to hold. Instead of extending the move, it reverses and climbs back into the range it just left.

The part worth sitting with isn’t that price went below support. Plenty of breakdowns do that and simply keep going. The part worth sitting with is that the selling below support didn’t produce any follow-through. That failure to continue is the actual signal — not the break itself.

Context decides everything

This is where most people jump the gun. They see a support level give way and immediately start hunting for a spring, regardless of what came before it.

A spring doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It shows up after a stock has spent real time building a base — a defined range, following a decline, where supply has visibly been getting absorbed. Only once that groundwork exists does a break below the range low become worth a second look.

If a stock is simply making lower highs and lower lows in an established downtrend and slices through another support level, calling that a spring is wishful thinking. It’s probably just a breakdown. A spring is a terminal event — it closes out a period of preparation. It isn’t one more leg in an ongoing decline.

Why would the market even go there

It helps to think about who’s positioned where by the time a range matures. Traders who spotted the setup early are already long, and a large share of them have stops parked just under the obvious support line, because that’s where everyone places them.

When price finally trades through that level, several things happen at once. Existing longs get stopped out. Breakdown traders initiate shorts. Fear shows up fast. And all of that selling has to be absorbed by someone on the other side. Whether or not you picture a single “operator” behind it, the mechanism is straightforward supply and demand: a move below an obvious level generates exactly the kind of forced selling that lets stronger hands take stock off weaker ones.

That’s the real use of the spring as a concept. The move below support isn’t the interesting part. What the market does with the selling it generates — that’s the interesting part.

The volume tells you how, not just what

Price tells you what happened. Volume tends to tell you how it happened, and with a spring, that distinction matters.

Spring on low volume

Here, price pushes into new low ground but volume barely moves. If a breakdown were genuine, you’d expect real selling pressure to show up as price enters territory below the range. When it doesn’t, the read is fairly direct: there isn’t much supply left at these levels. Sellers simply aren’t showing up in size. On its own, light volume doesn’t confirm anything — it becomes meaningful only alongside the context and, crucially, what price does next.

Spring on high or climactic volume

This looks bearish at first glance — a sharp expansion in volume as price breaks down. But the volume alone doesn’t tell the story; the result does. If that heavy selling marks the low, and price stabilises and climbs back above the old support, the read changes completely. That volume spike likely represented a final wave of selling being absorbed rather than fresh distribution.

Confirmation is the whole point

If there’s one idea to take from this piece, it’s this: the spring itself is not the signal. The reaction after it is.

A break below support tells you nothing on its own. What matters is whether price reclaims that level quickly, moves back inside the range, and shows that the selling had no follow-through. A genuine spring shouldn’t spend much time below the old support. It shouldn’t repeatedly test the underside of that level and fail to get back above it.

If price breaks down and simply stays down, there’s no need to force a bullish story onto the chart. It’s probably just a breakdown, and the chart is telling you that plainly.

To keep this objective rather than a judgment call, here’s the rule I use: if price breaks an established support level and climbs back above it within two trading sessions — two days on a daily chart, two weeks on a weekly chart — it qualifies as a probable spring. Beyond that window, the benefit of the doubt runs out, and the move is better treated as a genuine breakdown until proven otherwise.

The mistake worth avoiding

The most common error here is acting on anticipation instead of confirmation — seeing price approach support, expecting a spring, and reacting the moment support breaks. That’s a bet on a hypothesis, not a response to evidence. Sometimes the hypothesis is simply wrong, and the stock keeps falling.

Separating anticipation from confirmation is worth the discipline. You can watch for a possible spring without acting on it. Once price reclaims the old support and demonstrates that the breakdown failed, the setup becomes something worth evaluating — and often, the first pullback after that recovery offers a cleaner reference point than trying to catch the exact low.

A four-question checklist

When a possible spring shows up, four questions cover most of what matters:

1. Context — has the stock built a genuine range after a prior decline, or is this just another leg down in a trend?

2. Penetration — did price meaningfully break the range low, or was this a minor intraday wick?

3. Volume — was the break on conspicuously light volume, or on a climactic surge?

4. Reclaim — has price moved back above the old support within two trading sessions (two days on a daily chart, two weeks on a weekly chart)?

If the answer to all four is yes, the setup is worth watching closely. If price simply stays below the old support, the spring interpretation isn’t earning its place — and that’s fine. Not every breakdown is disguising something.

Before Part 2

If you checked your terminal twice thinking it was a data error, you weren’t alone. It wasn’t a glitch. It was SEBI’s new Closing Auction Session (CAS) — live since August 3 — doing exactly what it was built to do, just not in the way anyone expected on day one.

Here’s the decode.

What Happened

For decades, the closing price of a stock was simply the VWAP — the volume-weighted average price — of the last 30 minutes of trading. From August 3, that changed for every stock that has an F&O contract. Instead of an average of scattered trades, the closing price is now decided by a single auction: all buy and sell orders in the last few minutes are pooled and matched at one equilibrium price. That becomes the official close.

Crucially, this auction applies only to the cash market price of F&O stocks. Futures and options keep trading on the regular order book, untouched by the auction. That single design choice explains the entire spectacle of the last two days — a cash index (Nifty) moving on auction dynamics while futures reflect plain continuous trading.

What It Means

Think of the old system as a moving average — easy to nudge with a well-timed burst of orders in the final seconds. Traders called this “banging the close,” or more colourfully, a hero-zero trade: a small, sharp push near 3:30 PM that could shift the settlement price enough to matter for MTM, options expiry, or index levels.

CAS closes that door. The close is no longer about who trades last — it’s about who reflects genuine demand across the whole pooled order book. Add a random cutoff between 3:28-3:30 PM, a ±3% band on auction orders, and the auto-cancellation of stop-losses before the auction begins, and last-second manipulation becomes structurally difficult.

The side effect: on a brand-new mechanism’s first sessions, genuine large orders in a few heavyweight stocks can move the auction price more than the old VWAP ever would have. That’s not manipulation — it’s price discovery finding its feet. It’s also precisely why Nifty and Sensex, which carry different stock weights, produced a rare 90 basis-point gap between them on launch day — the second-widest such divergence since March 2020.

Implications

The mechanical shift runs deeper than the headline number:

• Continuous trading for CAS stocks now ends at 3:15 PM, not 3:30 PM — 15 minutes earlier than what the market is used to.

• Intraday (MIS) square-offs on these stocks now happen earlier too, around 3:00 PM.

• Your stop-loss orders are auto-cancelled at 3:15 PM. Any GTT or SL order still open when continuous trading stops gets pulled — it will not carry into the auction window. If you’re holding a position into the close, that safety net disappears for the last 15 minutes unless you re-place it as a fresh limit order within the ±3% auction band.

• The closing print, for now, carries more noise than it used to — at least until order flow adapts to the new window.

What to Watch

Over the next 1-2 weeks, track whether the Nifty-Sensex closing divergence compresses back toward historical norms, and whether cash-futures gaps at the close start narrowing. Both are the tell that the market has learned to place orders within the new auction band rather than reacting to it.

Perspective Call

This is a plumbing change, not a market-direction signal. For long-term investors, the mechanism behind a stock’s closing print rarely changes the investment case — a fairer, harder-to-game close is, if anything, a quiet structural positive.

What this means for traders is simple: your clock has changed, so your habits need to change too. Continuous trading for these stocks now stops at 3:15 PM instead of 3:30 PM, intraday positions get auto-squared off around 3:00 PM, and — this is the one to remember — your stop-loss won’t protect you into the auction, since it gets cancelled at 3:15 PM. If you’re not comfortable with how much the closing price can move in these early days of the new system, the safer approach is to exit or adjust your position before 3:15 PM, while normal trading is still on, rather than waiting for the auction to decide your price. Give the system a few weeks to settle before trusting the closing print the way you used to.

That question sits at the heart of one of the more useful ideas I picked up while working toward my CMT — Martin Pring’s “Curse of the Cover Story.” The observation is simple. When a theme becomes big enough to dominate the cover of a business magazine or the top of every news feed, the story hasn’t just arrived. It has, in most cases, already played out. The market doesn’t reward the people who read the headline. It rewards the people who were positioned before it was written.

Why the Timing Works Against Latecomers

Financial media exists to describe what’s already happening. Markets exist to price what’s coming next. That mismatch is the whole mechanism.

By the time a theme earns mainstream coverage, the sequence has usually run most of its course: early positioning is done, estimates have been revised upward, institutional flows have built, and retail money is only now arriving. Optimism is high enough that even good news struggles to move price further. Run the same sequence in reverse at a bottom — despair dominates the headlines, selling is largely exhausted, and valuations often look better than sentiment suggests.

None of this means the underlying story is false. AI is a genuine structural shift. Gold’s appeal amid geopolitical uncertainty is real. The problem was never the narrative — it’s that everyone already knew it.

The Cover Story Has Gone Digital

Pring wrote this before social media existed, but the mechanism hasn’t changed — only the medium. Today’s equivalent isn’t a magazine cover; it’s a Google search spike, a viral post on X, a flood of similar reels on the same theme, record SIP or ETF inflows, or a prime-time debate that treats a trade as a foregone conclusion. These are just faster, noisier versions of the same signal: attention concentrated in one place, usually near an inflection.

The Evidence Is Everywhere, If You Look for It

NVIDIA and the AI trade offer the cleanest recent case. The long-term thesis remains intact, but every stretch of extreme, magazine-cover-level enthusiasm was followed by a sharp 15–30% correction — not because AI stopped mattering, but because expectations had simply run ahead of the fundamentals. Closer to home, Indian defence and PSU stocks turned into dinner-table conversations through 2024, right as valuations stretched furthest. Small and mid-caps saw the same pattern late in the year — record SIP flows, breathless coverage, and regulators openly flagging froth, just ahead of a healthy correction.

Adani in 2022–23 shows the mirror image. The narrative flipped overnight from unstoppable growth story to existential collapse — and that extreme pessimism, not the earlier optimism, is what coincided with the recovery in several group stocks. Extreme enthusiasm deserves caution. Extreme despair often deserves attention.

This Isn’t a Call to Fight Every Trend

Contrarian doesn’t mean automatically betting against whatever’s popular — strong trends can run far longer than logic suggests they should. The point isn’t to short the crowd. It’s to ask, whenever a narrative feels universally accepted: has the market already priced this in? If the answer is yes, the odds of disappointment start rising, and that’s exactly where technicals, valuation, and sentiment indicators earn their keep.

The Takeaway

Successful investing has less to do with reacting to the loudest headline and more to do with knowing where expectations stand before the next one gets written. The next time a magazine cover or a trending feed declares a theme unstoppable — or finished — resist the urge to ask if the headline is correct. Ask instead: if everyone already believes this, who’s left to buy? Or who’s left to sell? Often, the more revealing part of a cover story isn’t the headline at all. It’s the sentiment sitting quietly behind it.

Where the Numbers Come From

Leonardo Fibonacci was a 13th century Italian mathematician who introduced a sequence of numbers to the West — 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, and so on, where each number is the sum of the two before it. Markets don’t care about Leonardo. What they care about is the ratios that fall out of that sequence: 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, and 61.8%. Divide any number in the sequence by the one before it and you land close to 1.618 — the golden ratio. Divide it by the one two places ahead and you land close to 0.382. These ratios show up in shells, galaxies, and — for reasons that are debated more than proven — in the way prices retrace before resuming a trend.

Whatever you believe about why it works, this much is observable: prices tend to pull back to one of these levels before starting the next leg of the move. That’s the setup we’re trading.

Drawing the Retracement

The process is mechanical. Identify an impulse move — a clean, sharp rally with minimal overlap between candles. Connect the retracement tool from the low of that move to the high, and the platform plots the rest. For a short setup, reverse it: connect from the high to the low.

Too Many Numbers? Here’s the Filter

Here’s where most people get lost. A standard retracement tool throws five, sometimes seven levels at you, and it starts to feel like price can “react” from almost anywhere — which makes the whole tool feel unreliable. The real question isn’t which levels exist. It’s which ones deserve your attention. We narrow it down to three: 38.2%, 50%, and 61.8%. Everything else is noise. And even at these three, we don’t act on the level in isolation — we wait for a bullish or bearish candlestick confirmation around it, using the same pivot candle logic from Part 1.

Why This Tool Earns Its Place

This is the part that makes the effort worthwhile. These retracement levels frequently line up with moving averages you’re already tracking. A 38.2% retracement often coincides with the 20 EMA. A 61.8% retracement often lines up with the 50 or 200 EMA. When a Fibonacci level and a moving average agree, that’s not a coincidence worth ignoring — it’s confluence, and confluence is what separates a hopeful trade from a high-conviction one.

Steps for a Long Setup

1. Identify a clean impulse move.

2. Plot the retracement from low to high using the retracement tool.

3. Watch for a reversal signal at the 38.2%, 50%, or 61.8% level — ideally where it meets the 20 or 50 EMA.

4. Enter on a bullish confirmation candle. Stop loss below the pivot low. Target at a minimum 3:1 reward-to-risk.

For a short, reverse the logic: plot the retracement from high to low, watch for bearish confirmation at the same three levels, and place the stop above the pivot high. The pivot candle logic stays exactly as it was in Part 1 — it’s the confirmation trigger regardless of which framework brought you to that price.

Whether you’re using the Stochastic and the 50 EMA, an EMA crossover and retest, or a Fibonacci retracement, you’re solving the same problem — entering a trend after it has paused, not chasing it after it has already run. The tool changes. The discipline behind it doesn’t: wait for structure, wait for confirmation, define your risk before you’re in the trade. That’s what turns a pullback from a guessing game into a repeatable process.

Part 2 keeps the question the same but changes the toolkit. Instead of an oscillator and a single moving average, this setup runs entirely on two EMAs talking to each other: the 20 and the 50.

Why the 20-50 EMA Band Works

The 20 EMA moves fast — it hugs price and reacts almost immediately to short-term momentum. The 50 EMA moves slower — it filters out the noise and reflects the broader trend. When the 20 crosses above the 50 and price prints a new high for the move, you have confirmation that momentum and trend are aligned in the same direction.

What happens next is the part that matters. Price rarely runs in a straight line after that crossover — it pulls back, and more often than not, it pulls back into the space between the two EMAs. That band isn’t an arbitrary zone. It’s roughly where recent buyers are sitting on their average cost, which is exactly why it tends to act as dynamic support in an uptrend, and dynamic resistance in a downtrend.

So how do you actually trade that band without jumping in the moment price touches it?

The Setup Rules — Long

1. The 20 EMA crosses above the 50 EMA, and price makes a new high for the move — this confirms the uptrend is intact.

2. Price pulls back into the 20-50 EMA band.

3. Within that band, wait for a pivot low candle to form — the same concept from Part 1, where the candle marks a potential turning point rather than just guessing a bottom.

4. Confirmation comes when price closes above the high of the pivot candle. That close is your entry.

5. Stop loss sits below the low of the pivot candle.

6. Target: a minimum of 2:1 reward-to-risk, with 3:1 as the level worth watching for a fuller move.

The Setup Rules — Short (Mirror Image)

The short side is simply the long setup flipped. The 20 EMA crosses below the 50 EMA and price makes a new low for the move. Price then pulls back up into the 20-50 band, where you wait for a pivot high candle instead of a pivot low. Confirmation is a close below the low of the pivot candle — that’s your entry. Stop loss goes above the high of the pivot candle, and the same 2:1 to 3:1 target framework applies.

Which Timeframe Should You Use?

This setup scales cleanly across holding periods. Swing traders can apply it on the 60-minute or 120-minute charts, where the EMA band forms and gets tested within a few sessions — useful for those who want a faster read on the trade. Positional traders can run the identical logic on the daily chart, accepting a longer holding period and typically a wider stop in exchange for capturing a bigger move.

One Tool Among Several

It’s worth repeating what we said in Part 1: this framework isn’t superior to the Stochastic and 50 EMA approach, and it isn’t inferior either. They’re two different lenses pointed at the same problem — identifying whether a pullback is healthy continuation or early reversal. Some charts will show a cleaner pivot against the 20-50 band; others will show it more clearly against the Stochastic. The edge isn’t in picking a favorite — it’s in recognizing which lens the chart in front of you is offering, and in some cases, using both together for confluence.

There’s a third lens still to come. Part 3 of this series moves away from moving averages entirely and looks at Fibonacci retracement — a way of mapping the same pullback zones using ratio-based levels instead of price averages. The question it raises is simple: does the market really respect these ratios, or do enough traders watching them create the effect themselves?

Start where trends are made and broken — the larger time frames. The quarterly chart of Nifty IT is sitting at a crucial support zone, and the monthly chart confirms the same area around 26,184–26,189. When two higher time frames agree on a support zone, it deserves respect.

One level lower, the weekly chart has done something more interesting: it has produced bullish reversal signals along with positive divergence. Momentum stopped confirming the fall in price — often the first whisper of a trend losing steam.

So why not call the bottom?

Because structure still outranks signals. The sequence of lower highs and lower lows remains intact, and until Nifty IT closes above 31,290.95 on the weekly time frame, this remains a downtrend that has paused, not one that has reversed. Even a move above that level would argue for a pause in the decline — a full-blown reversal is far harder to predict. Two factors keep the caution alive.

First, the quarterly chart, despite sitting at support, still shows enough room for price to travel toward the lower Bollinger Band. A bounce that runs into fresh selling pressure is a live possibility — bear market rallies are precisely how downtrends refuel.

Second, distance from the mean. The 200-day EMA sits at 31,982, while Nifty IT trades near 29,226 — substantially below it. Sustainable uptrends are built above this line, not this far beneath it.

The Nasdaq shadow

What does an index in Mumbai have to do with a screen in New York? Almost everything, in Indian IT’s case. The sector’s revenue engine runs on US technology spending, which makes Nifty IT unusually sensitive to how the Nasdaq behaves. And the Nasdaq is flashing its own warnings: the monthly chart has given a negative divergence signal, while the weekly chart shows bearish price action with negative divergence in overbought territory. Even the daily chart is carving out a descending triangle — a pattern of sellers pressing lower with every bounce. With the Nasdaq under pressure across time frames, a free-flowing rally in Indian IT is difficult to sustain.

The question charts cannot answer

Beneath the technicals sits a harder debate: is Indian IT’s challenge cyclical or structural? The market’s fear is not last quarter’s numbers — it is whether a headcount-led services model can transition to AI-led value fast enough. Encouraging order books and AI-branded deal wins are early evidence that the transition is underway. Whether it resolves the structural question is something a single earnings season cannot settle.

Final takeaway

1. More evidence is needed before concluding that Indian IT has bottomed out.

2. Quarterly results across most large-cap IT names have been encouraging — but one good season is too early to confirm a reversal.

Why pullbacks beat chasing

Think about what a pullback actually gives you. First, a better price — you’re buying strength on a discount, not at a premium. Second, a defined risk — the pullback creates a logical level to place your stop, so you always know what you’re risking before you enter. Third, a cleaner reward-to-risk ratio — entering closer to support means your stop is tight and your potential target is wide.

Chasing gives you none of these. Your entry is stretched, your stop is either too far away or too arbitrary, and your reward-to-risk is upside down before the trade even begins. For newer traders especially, this is the single most important shift to make: stop asking “how do I get in now?” and start asking “where will this come back to?”

What this series covers

Over the next three Tech Talks, I’ll walk you through three rules-based pullback strategies:

Strategy 1 — Stochastic + 50 EMA with candlestick confirmation (today’s piece)

Strategy 2 — The 20-50 EMA crossover and retest

Strategy 3 — Fibonacci retracement at the 38% and 50% levels

No strategy here is better or worse than the others. All three are mechanical, all three define risk before entry, and all three are built around a healthy reward-to-risk ratio. Pick the one that fits your temperament — but follow its rules completely.

Strategy 1: Stochastic + 50 EMA

This setup combines three layers of evidence: trend (the 50 EMA), timing (the stochastic oscillator), and confirmation (price action). Here are the rules for the long side, on the daily timeframe:

1. Find the trend. Scan for stocks in a clear uptrend that have pulled back to the 50 EMA. Give preference to stocks that recently made new highs or 52-week highs before pulling back — strength that just proved itself tends to repeat.

2. Check the timing. As price tests the 50 EMA, the stochastic should be in oversold territory. An oversold reading inside an uptrend isn’t weakness — it’s a spring being compressed.

3. Wait for the pivot candle. At the 50 EMA, price must form a swing-low candle — a candle whose low sits below the low of the candle before it and the candle after it. This is your mechanical proof that sellers ran out of steam at the average. Then, within the next two trading sessions, you need a close above the high of that pivot candle.

4. Execute with defined risk. Entry is on the close of that confirming green candle. Stop goes below the low of the swing-low candle. Minimum target: three times your risk (3:1).

The short side — same logic, mirrored

Everything reverses cleanly for downtrends:

1. Stock in a downtrend, retesting the 50 EMA from below with a bearish candle.

2. Stochastic in overbought territory at the retest.

3. A pivot-high candle forms (a high above the highs on either side of it), followed within two sessions by a close below the low of that pivot candle.

4. Entry on the close of that confirming candle, stop above the pivot high, minimum 3:1 target.

The variation that works even better: the Trap Setup

There’s a subtle twist on this setup that we like even more. Sometimes price doesn’t just touch the 50 EMA — it breaks below it for a day or two. Weak hands panic, stops get triggered, and the chart looks broken. Then price forms a pivot candle and closes back above the 50 EMA.

That’s the trap. The brief break below the average shakes out impatient sellers, and the swift reclaim tells you demand absorbed all of it. Every other rule stays identical — same pivot candle, same two-session confirmation, same entry, stop, and 3:1 target. The only difference is that the failed breakdown adds one more layer of conviction to the trade.

Why this suits working professionals

This is a daily-timeframe setup, which means it doesn’t demand screen time during market hours. Run your scan over the weekend, shortlist stocks sitting at their 50 EMA with oversold stochastics, and then simply wait for the pivot candle and confirmation. Once the rules trigger, place your order with the stop and target pre-defined. No intraday stress, no second-guessing — the system does the deciding.

That’s the real point of this series. Not theory, not indicator trivia — practical, rules-based setups you can actually run alongside a full-time job.

So we did what we always do here — put the headline aside and opened the charts. And the honest answer is: nothing has materially changed.

The bigger picture first

On the monthly timeframe, crude shows signs of falling away from a resistance zone, and the next meaningful support sits only around the $58–60 region. That is the zone worth watching — not the intraday war premium.

The weekly chart adds weight to the same story. Crude is carving out a lower-low, lower-high structure, pointing to the same $60 support. More importantly, price has broken below the 200-week EMA — and history suggests this average is not a line to ignore.

The last time crude reclaimed the 200-week EMA, in February 2021, it travelled from $60 to over $130 in about a year. When it slipped below the same average in July 2024, it fell roughly 33% — from $80 to $60. By that same logic, a further bearish move from current levels cannot be ruled out.

Bounces, yes. Trend, no.

Will crude give intermittent bounces? Almost certainly — headline-driven markets always do. But multiple indicators are confirming the same thing: the sustainable uptrend has been punctured, and lower levels remain the path of least resistance.

There is also a historical pattern worth remembering. Crude has fallen more than 40% from its top — in just three months. Moves of this speed and depth have historically been followed by long, drawn-out sideways phases and frustrating price action. That environment rarely rewards trend-following; rangebound approaches have historically worked far better in such phases.

The confirmation nobody watches: the stocks

Stocks discount things first. We flagged the fall in crude well before it happened — through a bearish trendline break in ONGC. If you missed that piece, you can catch it here:

By the same token, look at what correlated equities are saying now. Oil exploration names (ONGC, Oil India) continue to give bearish indications. Oil consumers (IndiGo, HPCL, BPCL), on the other hand, are printing higher lows and higher highs — exactly what you’d expect if the market believes crude stays soft.

If the weight of evidence changes, so will our view. But for now, price action across timeframes — and across correlated stocks — suggests a sustainable rally in crude is unlikely.

One line on a chart. That’s the entire toolkit for today. But that one line answers three questions every trader wrestles with, on every instrument, on every timeframe.

Why 20?

Twenty periods on a daily chart is roughly one month of trading sessions — one month of collective price memory. Long enough to filter out daily noise, short enough to catch a trend while it still matters. The same logic scales: a day trader applies it on the 60-minute chart, a swing trader on the daily, a positional trader on the weekly. The instrument doesn’t matter either — equities, crude, gold, silver, currencies. Price memory works the same everywhere.

Three questions, one line

The 20 MA earns its place on the chart because it answers:

• What is the current trend of the instrument?

• When is that trend changing?

• And therefore — do conditions favour participation right now, or is standing aside the higher-percentage decision?

The reading itself is mechanical. Price closing above a clearly rising 20 MA: the underlying trend is up. Price below a clearly falling 20 MA: the trend is down. Price oscillating around a flat 20 MA: the market is sideways, and sideways markets are where this tool — and most trend tools — lose their edge. More on that at the end.

Note the two conditions in each rule: where price closes, and which way the line slopes. Either one alone is half a signal. Both together are the pulse.

EMA or SMA?

On my charts you’ll see the 20 EMA — the exponential version. A simple moving average weights all 20 sessions equally; the exponential version leans towards recent price, which makes it respond faster when the trend actually turns. In practice the difference between the two is marginal. Pick one, stay consistent. I use the EMA.

Case study: Voltas, 2021–2023

One full cycle — rally, consolidation, breakdown, reclaim — on a single daily chart. This is why the example is worth studying end to end.

The rally. On 1 September 2021, Voltas closed above the 20 EMA near ₹1,045 with the line turning up. Over the next six weeks the stock ran nearly 30%. The close above a rising 20 EMA wasn’t the cause of the rally — it was the earliest readable evidence that one was underway.

The chop. From October 2021 to March 2022, price crossed the 20 EMA repeatedly in both directions. Taken individually, each cross looked like a signal. But the slope told the real story: the line was flat. Flat slope, crossing price — that’s the textbook signature of a sideways market. And this is exactly what strong uptrends tend to produce: an extended pause before the next directional move.

The breakdown. On 2 May 2022, the stock slipped below the 20 EMA near ₹1,200 — and this time the slope confirmed, turning clearly down. Both conditions aligned. The correction that followed extended all the way to roughly ₹920.

The reclaim. On 2 February 2023, price closed back above the 20 EMA near ₹821, slope pointing up again. The stock recovered to the ₹920 zone in the weeks that followed. For anyone tracking the position, the logic was self-contained: as long as price held above the rising line, the uptrend argument stayed intact. The moment it didn’t, the chart itself said the thesis needed rework. That is the discipline the 20 EMA enforces — the chart tells you when you’re wrong, so you don’t have to negotiate with yourself.

Where the pulse check fails

Two honest limitations, because every tool has them:

• Timeframes matter. Moving averages carry real information on the daily, weekly and monthly charts. On 5- and 15-minute charts they mostly carry noise.

• Sideways markets break them. A flat 20 EMA generates crossing signals that mean nothing — you saw six months of it on the Voltas chart. Experienced traders pair the MA with support-resistance zones and pivot structure to filter those false signals.

That second point — combining the 20 EMA with support and resistance — deserves its own piece. That’s the next Tech Talks.

Until then, pull up any chart you follow and overlay the 20 EMA. Check the close, check the slope, name the trend. It looks almost too simple. So does taking a pulse — and doctors haven’t stopped doing it.

Every week in Decoding the Headline, we dissect one market-moving story to find the “news beneath the news.” This week, the headline above screamed about the crash in gold prices — and asked the question every investor is now asking: is this the time to step in?

Here’s my take on the yellow metal, purely through an investing lens. As always, we start from the top and work our way down.

The Quarterly Chart: Every Rally Needs to Breathe

On the quarterly timeframe, gold was stretched along the upper Bollinger Band with RSI above 90. In a strongly trending instrument, overbought RSI readings are often immaterial — but only until price refuses to budge. The moment price shows fatigue, RSI cools off, and prices correct. No asset rallies relentlessly in one direction without taking a breather. Gold is now in exactly that phase — taking its breather.

The evidence sits on the chart. The quarterly candle that closed in January 2026 printed a large upper wick — a classic footprint of selling pressure at higher levels. The candle that closed in June 2026 followed it with a bearish engulfing pattern. Two back-to-back quarters of supply is the market’s way of saying the rally is paused for the time being.

The Weekly Chart: 4,917 Is the Line in the Sand

Drill down to the weekly chart and the structure is unambiguous: lower highs, lower lows. The last lower high at 4,917 is the level that decides everything from here. A weekly close above it would tell us gold is genuinely attempting a trend change. Until then, every rally is likely to run into sellers.

And if the downtrend extends? The 3,520–3,540 zone is worth watching — a change-of-polarity level, where what was once resistance typically turns into support.

The Daily Chart: A Matured Downtrend

The daily chart is in a matured downtrend, with a clean series of lower lows and lower highs. Price trades below the 200 DMA, and the 50 DMA is on the verge of crossing below it — the phenomenon popularly called the “Death Crossover.”

In the shorter term, a break above the last lower high at 4,403 could trigger a temporary bounce. But a bounce and a reversal are two very different things. The structural upswing becomes a serious conversation only above 4,917 — on a weekly closing basis.

The Dollar in the Room

No gold analysis is complete without the Dollar Index (DXY). The two have historically shared an inverse relationship — a firm dollar is a headwind for gold. And right now, DXY has given a Golden Crossover (50 EMA crossing above the 200 EMA) for the first time since April 2025, with declines finding buyers. In such an environment, a stellar gold rally looks unlikely anytime soon. The best-case scenario? Gold trades sideways in the upcoming months and corrects through time rather than price — a “time correction.”

Zoom Out: Why the Long-Term Case Stays Intact

So the short-term picture is heavy. Does that break the long-term thesis? Not even close. Strip away the noise, and the structural case for gold rests on five pillars:

1. De-dollarization is no longer a theory. The freezing of roughly $300 billion of Russia’s reserves in 2022 taught every central bank the same lesson: paper assets held abroad can be frozen overnight; gold in your own vault cannot. BRICS+ nations now hold about 17.4% of global gold reserves, up from 11.2% in 2019. In late 2025, gold overtook US Treasuries to become the world’s largest reserve asset by value — the first time it has held a larger share of reserves than Treasuries since 1996.

2. Central banks are relentless buyers. They bought over 1,000 tonnes a year in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and added another 863 tonnes in 2025 — the fourth-largest annual expansion on record and nearly double the 2010–2021 average of 473 tonnes. In the World Gold Council’s latest survey, 95% of central banks expect global gold reserves to rise further. When the world’s most conservative institutions accumulate an asset this consistently, it is a signal, not a coincidence.

3. The demand-supply mismatch is structural. Mine supply grows slowly and known reserves are depleting, while demand — official, institutional, and retail — keeps expanding. Scarcity is a feature of this asset, not a phase.

4. Geopolitics keeps the safe-haven bid alive. With most major economies raising defence allocations and flashpoints multiplying, the world is structurally more uncertain — and uncertainty is gold’s natural habitat.

5. The zero test. Gold can fall, consolidate, and frustrate. What it cannot do is go to zero. Individual equities can — and do.

The Bottomline

This looks like a consolidation period for gold — a phase where it likely underperforms in the short term while the larger structure repairs itself. For long-term investors, the real question isn’t whether gold deserves a place in asset allocation; the data above settles that. The question is what to do with phases like this one. Historically, time corrections in structurally strong assets are exactly the periods patient capital has used to build positions gradually and with discipline — while impatient capital loses interest. With global demand rising against constrained supply, many allocators argue that gold — alongside silver — has earned a meaningful, permanent seat in a portfolio’s asset-allocation framework. The investing case for silver deserves a piece of its own. That one is coming soon.

Let’s go further.

3. Supertrend as Dynamic Support and Resistance

Static support and resistance levels are useful. But they have one fundamental limitation — they don’t adapt to changing volatility. A horizontal line drawn at 500 means the same thing in a low-volatility consolidation as it does in a high-volatility breakout phase. Which is to say, it means very different things depending on market conditions.

The Supertrend line doesn’t have that problem.

In an uptrend, a rising Supertrend line acts as dynamic support — a level that moves with price, adjusting to the prevailing volatility through its ATR foundation. Every retracement back toward the line is a test of trend health. As long as price closes above it, the trend is intact.

In a downtrend, a falling Supertrend line acts as dynamic resistance — every bounce back toward it is a potential opportunity for the trend to reassert itself.

This is clean and widely known. What most traders don’t know is what happens at the edges.

The Band Approach — A Research Finding

Here’s something I’ve observed consistently across multiple market cycles that isn’t in any textbook.

The default Supertrend setting is 10,3. Most traders use this as a single line. The problem is that in trending markets with moderate volatility, price frequently slips below the 10,3 line intrabar or even on a daily close — only to recover and continue the uptrend. A trader using only the 10,3 line gets stopped out. The trend continues without them.

The fix: plot a second Supertrend line alongside the default — same ATR period of 10, but with a multiplier of 4 instead of 3. This creates a band between the two lines rather than a single line.

Instead of treating the 10,3 line as a hard stop, treat the zone between 10,3 and 10,4 as a dynamic support band in an uptrend. A close below 10,3 is a warning. A close below 10,4 is the actual signal.

This one adjustment significantly reduces premature exits caused by volatility spikes that aren’t genuine trend reversals — what traders call whipsaws.

The logic is straightforward: the multiplier controls how far the Supertrend line sits from price. A higher multiplier means a wider buffer. The band between 10,3 and 10,4 is essentially a volatility-adjusted tolerance zone — it absorbs noise without abandoning the position.

This works best on daily timeframes for positional traders and weekly timeframes for investors. On intraday charts, the band can become too wide relative to the move and lose its utility.

4. Confirming Pivots with Supertrend Reversal Points

Every trader marks support and resistance levels. The question that rarely gets asked is: which ones actually matter?

A price level that has been tested multiple times looks significant on a chart. But not all tests are equal. A level that was tested during low-volume, low-volatility conditions carries less weight than one that held during a high-momentum move.

Here’s what I’ve observed: when a key horizontal support or resistance level coincides with a Supertrend reversal point — the exact candle where the Supertrend flipped from green to red or red to green — that level deserves significantly more weight.

Why? Because a Supertrend reversal isn’t just a price event. It’s a volatility-adjusted confirmation that momentum has shifted at that level. The ATR component means the reversal is happening with enough force to overcome the prevailing volatility buffer. That’s a stronger statement than price simply touching a horizontal line.

When a horizontal resistance level aligns with the point where Supertrend flipped from bullish to bearish, that resistance is reinforced. Price didn’t just fail at a level — it failed with enough momentum to trigger a trend change. That’s a level worth respecting on subsequent tests.

The same logic applies in reverse. A horizontal support level where Supertrend previously flipped from bearish to bullish is a level where buying momentum was strong enough to reverse the trend. On a retest, that level carries a different quality than one that merely held price.

The March 2025 low coincides almost exactly with a Supertrend reversal from red to green — and that same zone has acted as a high-probability support region since. The resistance band near 26,400 shows the same pattern on the upside. When price level and Supertrend reversal align, the level carries more weight.

The practical application

When you have multiple support or resistance levels on a chart and you’re unsure which one to anchor your trade to — check which one aligns with a prior Supertrend reversal point. That’s your level. Not because it’s guaranteed to hold, but because it carries more information than a line drawn at a round number or a prior swing high.

Putting It Together

Across both parts of this series, we’ve covered five distinct applications of a single indicator:

What’s happening, and why did the charts warn us before the news did?

The Structure Broke First

Look at the weekly chart. From its 2023 lows, Nasdaq built a clean sequence of higher highs and higher lows — the textbook anatomy of an uptrend. That structure held through 2024 and into 2025. But in recent weeks, price carved out a lower high followed by a lower low. The HH-HL sequence is broken.

When price breaks structure on the weekly timeframe, it’s not noise — it’s a signal.

The daily chart adds confirmation: a death cross, where the shorter moving average crosses below the longer. Crossovers alone don’t make a case. But in the context of a broken weekly structure, this one carries weight. Momentum has shifted, not just price.

Why Is This Happening?

Two forces are converging.

First, investors are now demanding proof that billions poured into AI infrastructure will translate into actual profits — and the evidence so far is thin. Only about 3% of bank customers pay for AI services. Valuations priced in a future that hasn’t fully arrived yet.

Second, the macro backdrop is turning hostile for growth stocks. The Fed has opened the door to rate hikes in 2026, driven by accelerating inflation — partly a consequence of the Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz disruptions. Higher rates compress valuations on long-duration assets. Tech stocks feel this first.

Sandisk, Micron, and Arm fell over 10%. Nvidia dropped over 4%. Marvell, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments — all down around 9%. This isn’t a sector rotation footnote. This is broad-based institutional repositioning.

The Rotation Is Already Underway

The Dow held. Money isn’t leaving the market — it’s moving within it. Industrials, utilities, financials, and small-caps are absorbing flows that were previously locked in Nasdaq mega-caps. The top 10 names drove roughly 83% of year-to-date index performance. When that unwinds, the exit is crowded.

Even within tech, selectivity is sharpening. Investors are moving toward AI infrastructure suppliers — the picks-and-shovels plays — and stepping away from expensive AI leaders whose monetization timelines remain uncertain.

What the Chart Is Pointing To

The Nasdaq chart has a reference level worth watching closely: the 64-66 zone — the base from which the entire April 2025 rally originated. In technical terms, that’s where the move began. It’s also where the most significant support cluster resides.

Until price finds acceptance above broken structure, every rally in between is likely to attract selling pressure. The path of least resistance, for now, points lower.

What to do next? - tighten your belts & get ready to grab this opportunity!

Near-term, caution is warranted. But here’s where human psychology becomes the real risk.

When stocks are rising, most people say: “I’ll wait for a dip.” When the dip actually arrives, they say: “I’ll wait for it to fall a little more.” And then the market reverses — and the opportunity is gone!

Don’t fall into that trap.

The AI theme is structural, not cyclical. What the internet did to the global economy, AI is beginning to do now. The companies building this infrastructure are not going away. Medium-term pain does not invalidate the long-term thesis.

If quality names approach levels that were previously out of reach, that’s worth paying attention to. Setting up or increasing a SIP in fundamentally sound tech names — systematically, not emotionally — is the kind of discipline that separates investors from spectators.

The charts told the story early. They usually do. The question now is whether you’re positioned to act when the setup completes — or still waiting for one more dip.

What is Supertrend, briefly

Supertrend is built on ATR — Average True Range — which measures price volatility. The indicator plots a dynamic line above or below price depending on trend direction. Default parameters: ATR period 10, multiplier 3. We’re keeping those defaults throughout. The focus here is application, not parameter tweaking.

Simple rule: price above the line = bullish. Price below = bearish.

What you do with that is where it gets interesting.

1. Reading Trend Direction — Beyond the Colour

Yes, this is the starting point. But most traders stop at the wrong place.

The Supertrend line doesn’t just tell you what the trend is — it tells you how committed price is to it. There’s a material difference between a stock that crossed above the Supertrend line yesterday and one that has been consistently closing above a rising line for 15 sessions without so much as touching it.

The first is a signal. The second is a trend in motion.

Three things worth tracking as you read the line:

Distance from the line. Price pulling away from a rising Supertrend signals momentum. Price compressing back toward it signals exhaustion — or a potential retest before continuation. Neither is automatically bullish or bearish, but both are worth noting.

Slope of the line itself. A steeply rising Supertrend in an uptrend tells you volatility is expanding in the direction of the trend. A flattening Supertrend — even if price is still above it — often precedes a directional decision. Watch for it.

Consistency of closes. One close below the Supertrend in an uptrend is noise. Two consecutive closes below it are a conversation worth having. This is where most premature exits happen — traders treat a single candle as a reversal signal and exit a perfectly valid trend.

Two things worth noting — the momentum expansion as price pulls away from the rising Supertrend line in April, and the May retest that held without a close below. The trend never gave a valid exit signal.

Importance of consistency of closes. The arrow marks a close above the Supertrend line that looked like a reversal — it wasn't. One close doesn't confirm a trend change. What followed told the real story.

2. Trailing Stop Loss — Letting the Trade Breathe

This is where Supertrend earns its reputation among serious traders — and where most traders still manage to get it wrong.

The most common trading mistake isn’t picking the wrong stock. It’s exiting the right stock too early. We book profits at 8% because we’re afraid of giving back gains — only to watch the stock run 40%. This isn’t a knowledge problem. It’s a psychological one.

Supertrend addresses it by removing the emotional variable entirely. The rule is mechanical: stay in the trade as long as price closes on the correct side of the Supertrend line on your chosen timeframe. Exit when it doesn’t. No deliberation, no “let me see one more candle.”

Timeframe selection is where this gets nuanced. The trailing stop must match your holding period — not your anxiety level:

• Intraday traders: 30-minute chart

• Swing traders: 4-hour chart

• Positional traders: Daily chart

• Investors: Weekly chart

A positional trader using a 15-minute chart to trail their stop will get shaken out of every meaningful move. A swing trader using a weekly chart will sit through drawdowns their capital can’t support. The mismatch between timeframe and intent is one of the most common — and most costly — execution errors.

The close matters more than the breach. Price piercing the Supertrend intrabar is routine in volatile markets. What counts is the closing price relative to the line. An intraday wick below the Supertrend on a daily chart means very little. A daily close below it means reassess.

Used correctly, this approach doesn’t just protect capital — it keeps you in trades long enough to capture the kind of moves that actually change your returns for the year.

The Setup

US-Iran peace talks are looking shaky, and that uncertainty is likely to keep Monday’s opening volatile until clarity emerges. Technically, Nifty could drift toward closing the open gap at 23,645-23,817. On the upside, 24,400-24,500 is the zone to watch — it’s where a prior resistance point converges with the 200 EMA. Markets typically test a 200 EMA at least once before deciding their next move; this could be that test.

The silver lining is Bank Nifty. It’s trading above all its key moving averages and showing a buy-on-pullback structure — the kind of setup that historically draws dip-buying interest. It too has an open gap to contend with, in the 57,120-57,867 zone. Both weekly and monthly timeframes are decisively bullish, and the index continues to show meaningfully stronger relative strength than Nifty.

Five Factors to Watch This Week

1. US-Iran talks — Is this a temporary stall or a real breakdown? Views are split on whether the Strait of Hormuz is actually closed. That ambiguity alone is enough to keep markets on edge.

2. Crude oil — A failure in talks would typically spike crude. But with prices already below $80, even a 5-6% move from here isn’t large enough to move markets meaningfully. Crude is trading near its 200 DMA, so a bounce wouldn’t be surprising — though technically, that bounce looks more like a level to fade than one to chase, unless fundamentals shift.

3. IT sector — The bellwether names are showing clear weakness, and there’s no major technical support visible nearby. The question worth asking: how much further does this leg lower extend before buyers step in?

4. The rupee — Strengthening, helped by RBI measures and softer crude. That trend looks likely to hold for now.

5. FII flows — FIIs turned net buyers last week, a small but notable shift in sentiment. Whether this becomes a sustained reversal in flows is the bigger question traders will be watching.
