This one is different, and I want to set it up properly for those of you outside India.

I left India in 2003, when I was seventeen. Growing up there, we did not have that many concerts. Barely any stadium tours, not many festival circuits, none of the live entertainment infrastructure kids elsewhere took for granted. Weddings were it. That was the season everything happened. You saw cousins you had not seen all year, you made new friends, you stayed out late, you danced. The entire social calendar was built around somebody else’s marriage.

Then two films changed the shape of it entirely. Hum Aapke Hain Koun in 1994 and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995 did not just fill theaters, they rewrote the ceremony itself. Families started lifting songs, games, and whole rituals straight off the screen into their own weddings. The shoe-stealing tradition that half the world now thinks is ancient? That is Hum Aapke Hain Koun. What the world pictures as the classic big Indian wedding is, in large part, a Bollywood invention an entire country adopted as tradition.

Three decades later, weddings are the fourth largest economic sector in India, worth over $130 billion. The average couple hires at least fourteen vendors. The industry sustains up to 10 million full-time jobs and roughly 20 million seasonal ones. And coming off my own brother’s wedding a few weeks ago, sitting inside all of it again as family rather than a guest, this episode landed differently than I expected.

For Volume 8 of The Learning Lounge, we sat down with Shrey Bhagat, founder, photographer and creative director of Raabta Studios. Vogue had named them one of India’s top five wedding photographers.

Shrey is a master of his craft, and I mean that in the old sense of the word. For his first full year assisting Jatin Kampani, one of the most respected fashion photographers in India, he was not allowed to touch a camera. His only job was to watch the light. The camera, he was told, is just a medium to capture what you see. The real art is learning to see. Year two he was handed a Hasselblad. Year three was about how you carry yourself, how you talk to people, how you make a room comfortable enough to be honest in. Four and a half years of that before he built anything of his own.

Over the last 14 years, that training has become more than 450 weddings across 20 countries, from palaces in Rajasthan to the coastlines of Greece. In 2022, he and his wife Manveen founded Raabta Studios. Raabta is a Punjabi and Urdu word meaning cosmic connection, chosen out of a shortlist of 215 names, because out of billions of people, two of them find each other. They launched with three clients and ten team members who left a previous company alongside them, no office, no equipment, renting chairs and machines for the first six months. By year two, Vogue had named them one of India’s top five wedding photographers.

This one hit close to home. Shruti and I know what it takes to build something with the person you love. Manveen spent fourteen years in advertising strategy before she came over to run the business side, and the way they split it, she owns everything before and after the wedding, he owns every creative call on the day, is the cleanest version of that arrangement I have heard. She is also, in his words, his biggest critic. Sitting across from him felt less like an interview and more like looking in a mirror.

One line stayed with me after we wrapped.

“The first one chooses you. After that, every one is chosen by you.”

He was talking about how a photographer lands their first wedding, a leap of blind trust from a friend who believed in him before he believed in himself. But it applies to every creative career. The first break finds you. Everything after that, you build.

A few reasons to watch:

• If you are building a business with your partner, Shrey and Manveen are a case study in dividing creative and operations without stepping on each other, and why their honesty with each other is the reason the work is good.

• If you are early in a creative career and feel behind, he is proof there is no correct timeline. The first job is hard to get. Everything after is on you.

• If you are scared to bet on yourself, his advice is refreshingly practical. Take the leap, but build the cushion first, because you cannot make good work with the stress of unpaid bills in your head. He carried ten salaries through Raabta’s first six months.

• If you lead a team, his five Rs, read, react, respond, relate, remember, are one of the cleanest field philosophies for creative work we have heard.

• If you are choosing between scale and quality, Raabta caps at 25 to 30 weddings a year with a founder always on site. He talks openly about why saying no is what earned him respect.

• If you are wrestling with what AI means for craft, he is clear-eyed. He will use it for mood boards, but every edit stays in-house, because only he knows why he took the shot.

Aria made an appearance in this one too, wandering in during the tea segment looking for the film for her camera. The same curiosity about the same magic that started Shrey’s entire journey.

This week my brother Utsav married Julia. Across the sangeet, the temple ceremony, and a reception none of us will forget, it was the kind of joy that reminds you what all the work is for. Julia has been part of the DANG family long before the wedding made it official, and we could not be happier to have her. The entrance and their first dance are burned into my memory.

Picture this. Two months into the biggest job of your career, and the internet turns on you.

It was June 12th. The anniversary of the Grimace birthday campaign from the year before. Fans had decided that date was now his birthday, and they expected McDonald’s to celebrate it. She did not post about it. She did not know it was a thing. By the end of the day, media outlets were calling about McDonald’s snubbing Grimace on his birthday, and she was sitting there thinking she had put her job in jeopardy before she had even settled in.

What happened next is the reason this episode exists.

That same day, Grimace threw the first pitch at a Mets game. The Mets went on a winning streak, and fans crowned him their good luck charm. Instead of hiding from the misstep, she chased the moment. The Empire State Building lit up purple to close out his birthday month. She called the Mets and asked if they could put a purple seat in the stadium to commemorate him. They did. And when fans started talking about the 7 train, the purple line that runs up to the stadium, as the Grimace train, she put him on it for the playoffs. Every single move came from listening to what fans were already doing and following them there.

Amanda and I met at Walmart, where she was second in charge of social. Since then I have watched her go on to run social for one of the most recognizable brands on the planet. The Grimace effect. McNugget Caviar, the free Valentine’s Day drop that pulled 2 million people to the site before it even launched, sold out immediately, and broke through Grammys and Super Bowl weekend. If it went viral with golden arches behind it, there is a good chance Amanda had something to do with it.

And then there is the part of her story almost nobody in corporate America talks about out loud. Four years before she got the McDonald's job, Amanda wrote it down in her manifestation journal. Director of social media at McDonald's. Word for word. She found the paper while packing for her move to Chicago. She thinks writing something down is how it starts becoming real. Given where she is sitting, it is hard to argue. I have mentored Amanda for years, so watching her step as head of social media role at McDonald's was a genuinely proud moment. The journal entry did not just come true. She outgrew it.

One of the questions I get asked most as a founder is how I spot talent early. My honest answer: look at what people build when nobody asked them to.

Nine years ago at Disney, I hired a Brazilian Senior Creative. What I did not know at the time was that she was quietly taking script writing courses at night and building her directorial chops as a side hustle. Today she is an Executive Creative Director at The Walt Disney Company, an award-winning filmmaker, and the founder of a platform that has helped hundreds of women build careers abroad.

The hidden thing was never the distraction. It was the signal.

There is another detail about her I have always found fascinating. She grew up in a family where everyone worked for the most beloved cartoon company in Brazil, founded by her grandfather, a man they call the Walt Disney of Brazil. Her mother is the real-life inspiration behind the most famous character in the country, more popular there than Mickey Mouse.

Except her.

She wanted a path that was fully her own. And in one of those turns life writes better than fiction, that path led her to the actual Walt Disney Company.

Carol was ranked the third most awarded copywriter in the world by the Cannes Global Creativity Report. Her Bald Cartoons campaign for a children’s cancer hospital, where beloved cartoon characters appeared bald to normalize what kids with cancer experience, won 13 Cannes Lions over two years and changed her life. She was recently named one of Ad Age’s creatives to watch in 2026. Her films have screened at festivals across LA, and her short film Johnny Malibu was a UCLA film festival official selection. She is a TV Academy and Emmy member and voter, and the founder of Elas na Gringa, a platform that has helped hundreds of Brazilian women build careers abroad.

Carol and I worked together during my Disney days, and this conversation felt like family from the first minute. She also co-directed the film for my DANG x Welcoming America collaboration, so we have created together outside those walls too.

And this episode carries a first for us too. Aria joined Shruti and me on the show for her Learning Lounge debut, serving tea in our tea segment. It has been quite a week for her. This past Sunday, she also took the mic to host our FIFA Final edition of the Sunday Reset, the four-hour sound bath livestream our team runs every week before the new week begins. One story earned the whole edition.

I published something I’ve been carrying for a long time: an open love letter to the advertising industry, in two parts. I want to be clear about what it is.

I’m a student and a fan of the advertising business. I grew up in it, won in it, judged in it, and I love it too much to pretend it’s fine. This isn’t me throwing rocks. This is me holding up a mirror, and you only do that for the things you love. Judging by the messages coming in from young creatives who read the article, it hit a nerve. The recurring reply: this is hard feedback for people who refuse to change, and it’s true.

Before you read it, let me tell you what triggered it.

The signal we couldn’t ignore:

I didn’t go to Cannes this year. I didn’t even seek it out. It came to me anyway. The festival showed up in my feed as creator content, filmed by people who don’t work in advertising, made for audiences who never will. And not one of those creators was talking about the work the industry spent a year building to celebrate.

Read that the way we’d read any signal for a client:

• The signal: the industry’s most prestigious week reached more people through outsiders than through its own channels.

• The behavior: audiences engaged with the festival as culture and skipped the work being awarded inside it.

• The force underneath: creative authority changed address. Culture stopped waiting for our industry to define the word “creative,” and started trusting the person over the institution.

That force is what the open love letter is about. I wrote it in two parts, because the diagnosis and the answer each deserved their own room.

And I'll be honest, the shift didn't surprise me. Shruti and I went to Cannes on creator passes years ago, before "creator" was even a category there, and covered the whole festival from our own channels. We were early to the address change.

PART 1: The Diagnosis

Part 1 is the mirror. It’s about how we became the only people left still grading our own creativity, why that happened, and what it’s costing us. The culture stopped checking what our industry thinks, and the reasons have less to do with talent and everything to do with pride.

A few threads to pull:

• Entries fell by roughly a quarter this year. The official story is a “reset.” The real story involves revoked Lions, results that were never real, and a decades-old practice the industry has its own nickname for. Part 1 names it.

• In 2017, I sat on one of those juries. What actually happens in that room isn’t corruption. It’s something more human, and in some ways more uncomfortable.

• And it ends on the question I still can’t put down: if the culture has already moved on, what, exactly, are we for?

PART 2: The Answer

Part 2 is the good news buried in the bad. The creativity didn’t die. It didn’t even leave. It changed address. This is where it went, why the smartest brands are already there, and what the next era actually asks of the people running this industry.

A few threads to pull:

• The most talked-about campaign at Cannes this year wasn’t invented in a brief. It came from the audience, and it outsold the brand’s core line by 466 percent. Part 2 explains why that number should keep every agency CFO up at night.

• Nearly four in ten adults under thirty now get their news from creators. The displacement that gutted the newsroom is coming for the agency next, for the same reason. Part 2 tells you what the survivors will have in common.

• And a test I run in my own living room: my seven-year-old, a remote, and the most awarded film of the year. She wins in under three seconds. If you have kids, run it with yours. Same result, I promise.

Here’s what I realized while writing it: I’ve already been having this exact conversation, on camera, in The Learning Lounge.

And that is partly why this week’s conversation felt so right. Marc Simons has been building things at a scale most people only read about. Our teams first overlapped during my Walmart days when Giant Spoon created Black and Unlimited, a platform giving young Black Americans a space for self-expression at scale only Walmart could provide. The work spoke for itself. A few months ago, Marc reached out. He had been following what we were building with DANG, and then The Learning Lounge. That is how this episode came together.

And when you look at what Marc has built, the scale of it is hard to process.

In 2013, four people walked out of a holding company with no safety net and no clients. This is what they built.

A 270-foot dragon coiled around the spire of the Empire State Building. Visible from every corner of Manhattan. 8 billion impressions. A single campaign. 90,000 feet of Texas dirt turned into HBO’s Westworld, a real walkable town with 60 actors. 15 landmarks across 14 countries cracked open into the Stranger Things upside down on the same night. 400 drones in formation over Austin forming a scannable QR code 300 feet tall in the sky for Paramount Plus and Halo.

One agency. All of it.

Over the next 13 years, he built Giant Spoon into one of the most celebrated independent agencies in the industry. In 2015, Giant Spoon was acquired by W Promote, forming a 700-person agency built on the idea that brands should never have to choose between love and money.

Marc was honest in a way that stayed with the room. The loneliness of building. The sleepless nights. The moment in March 2020 when four multi-million dollar activations disappeared overnight and Giant Spoon became one of the first agencies in the industry to lay off a significant part of its team within a week. He talked about all of it like someone who has made peace with what it cost.

One line stayed with me after we wrapped.

“The obstacle is the way.”

That is also the book he brought to the show. It came to him during the pandemic, at the exact moment when the business he had spent years building was facing the most existential threat it had ever seen. It became a framework for how he moved through that period and everything that came after.

This newsletter runs bi-weekly, and we try to be intentional about when we show up in your inbox. But some people deserve a special moment, and Jean Batthany is one of them.

Jean spoke at Cannes Lions on June 22nd. Terrace in the Palais. 1:30pm. And honestly, it felt like the most Jean thing she could possibly do. Standing in front of the creative world and talking about the importance of slowing down. At a festival built entirely on speed, noise, and who is loudest in the room.

She has been in Shruti and my life since 2017. She hired me at Disney. She threw us a baby shower at the office. The kind of person who tells you the truth not because it is her job but because she respects you enough to.

Last week I joined my fellow board members at Welcoming America at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.

We were there to celebrate Baltimore earning its 2-Star Certified Welcoming City status, but what stood out most was the people in the room. Leaders, organizers, advocates, and community builders all working toward the same idea: that opportunity should feel accessible, and belonging should not be something people have to earn.

That word stayed with me on the flight home. Belonging.

And it felt like the right frame to walk into Episode 4 of The Learning Lounge.

Because this one is about belonging too. To yourself. To your work. To the people who help shape who you become along the way.

Jean Batthany and I have known each other since 2017. She hired me at the Walt Disney Company, and our paths have stayed connected ever since, through Walmart, through building DANG, through becoming parents, through all of it. She hosted our baby shower. She has shown up in the moments that mattered, professionally and personally, in ways that are hard to put into a single introduction.

My Disney days brought a lot of things into focus, and Jean was one of several people there who shaped how I think about leadership. Not just the professional kind. The human kind. She helped me see things I had not been trained to see, about what it means to show up with awareness and not just ambition, about the weight people carry that you cannot always see, and about what it actually takes to build something that lasts.

So when we finally sat down to record this conversation, it did not feel like an interview. It felt like a long overdue reckoning with everything she has taught me that I am still unpacking.

The conversation was so rich, so layered, so full of things worth slowing down for, that we made a decision. We are releasing it in two parts. Part one is here today.

Jean is the founder of The Art of Pause, a practice and philosophy built around one idea that goes against almost everything hustle culture tells us. Stillness is not the opposite of great work. It is the engine of it. She has been the first Chief Creative Officer at Walmart, VP of Creative at Disney, and has spoken at TEDx, Cannes Lions, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She is now in her entrepreneurial era, building The Art of Pause and partnering with mission-driven leaders to create cultures that are psychologically safe, brave enough for big ideas, and built to last.

But the credentials, as impressive as they are, are not why this conversation matters.

And it starts with a line that stayed with me long after we wrapped.

“You can do anything, but you cannot do everything. And you can have it all, but you cannot have it all at once.”

That is not a productivity hack. That is hard-earned permission from someone who has lived it.

• If you are a working parent carrying guilt, Jean talks honestly about what it felt like to go back to work after having her daughters. The redeye flights. Being torn between two worlds at once. The years of parenting from guilt before she gave herself the grace to simply be present where she was, and then move.

Dear community,

I write to you from Baltimore, where I have come for the board meeting of Welcoming America, more on that in our next edition. Lots happen last few weeks. First some great news. Two weeks ago, I received the Innovator Award from the AD Club of New York.

I am incredibly grateful for the recognition, but more than anything, it got me thinking about what innovation actually feels like.

Most of the time, it is not glamorous.

It means moving forward without having all the answers. It means being questioned, taking risks, and building toward something that does not fully exist yet.

As an Indian immigrant, this moment carried a lot of meaning for me.

My father was a ship captain, and growing up, many of our conversations came through stories about the ocean.

One lesson always stuck with me: you do not wait for perfect conditions to set sail. You read what is in front of you, adjust your course, and keep moving.

The older I get, the more I realize that building a company, leading a team, and navigating a career work much the same way.

I am grateful to Madhu Malhan for the nomination, to Shruti and my family for the journey, to Odie and Trisha for showing up that night, and to everyone in this community who continues to build alongside us. Thank you for being part of it.

This week, the conversation slows down. On purpose.

Episode 3 is about something the first two only hinted at. The craft underneath the work. The long game. The unglamorous repetition that nobody posts about but that quietly shapes almost everything someone becomes capable of later in their career.

This week we sat down with Andrew McKechnie, currently part of the creative team at OpenAI. Before that, over two decades building work across some of the most defining advertising eras of the last 25 years. FCB Singapore, BBDO, JWT, Modernista, Apple, and Verizon, where he became their first Chief Creative Officer. The path from that first agency in Singapore to a creative leadership seat at OpenAI was built almost entirely on repetition, mentorship, and a willingness to do the unglamorous part of the work for longer than most people are willing to.

What made this one personal was the ground we both came up on.

We both trained in Singapore. I came up at Grey, BBDO, and JWT under legends like Joji Jacob, Juggi Ramakrishnan, Valerie Cheng, Jun Fukawa, and Tay Guan Hin. Andrew came up at FCB under Chris Kyme, Rob Sherlock, and Rob Gax. Different rooms, same era, same discipline. The kind that broke you down before it built you back up.

“You are not coming back until you have a hundred ideas.”

That line stayed with me because it captures something the modern creative environment is quietly losing. The discipline of going past the first five ideas, then the next ten, then the next twenty, until you actually start to surprise yourself. Singapore taught both of us that talent is mostly hard work showing up as repetition. And that idea does not just apply to creative work. It applies to founders. Operators. Anyone trying to build something that lasts longer than a season.

Fun fact: In 2012, I was an Art Director at JWT Singapore. I had heard about Andrew, put together my portfolio, and sent him a cold linkedin asking if he would look at my book.

Fourteen years later, we are sitting across from each other doing a podcast.

A few reasons to watch:

Kushal is an engineering leader and technology executive who has spent his career building large-scale data systems, AI infrastructure, and the kind of technology most people never see, but almost every major brand depends on.

He came to the U.S. from India to pursue his master’s in computer science at USC with a clear intention to build something meaningful. Over the last 15 years, he has done exactly that.

Today, at Feedonomics, he has helped build a platform that processes over 1 trillion product data rows every month, powering Fortune 500 companies, global brands, marketplaces, and advertising ecosystems around the world.

But beyond the scale, this one is personal.

Kushal and his wife, Himani, were some of our earliest friends in LA. We have seen each other grow through different phases of life, career, family, and everything in between.

It is about staying useful when the systems around you are changing faster than the old playbook can keep up.

That line stayed with me because it applies to almost everything right now. Careers. Companies. Technology. Leadership.

The moment you think you have figured it out is usually the moment you need to evolve again.

But the conversation also had its lighter moments, the kind that only happen when you are talking to someone you actually know.

At one point, I turned to Kushal and asked, half joking, half serious: “Can an AI agent get my daughter ready for school and send her on time?”

Right now? No. Not until the robotics catch up.

But here is the thing: I was not really joking. Because when the robotics do arrive, AI agents combined with them will be able to do exactly that. The timeline is the only thing still uncertain.

And that is also what we took from this episode internally.

Over the weekend, inspired by the conversation with Kushal, we built a Claude agent to support part of our distribution workflow. The first episode of The Learning Lounge is officially here.

I wanted to begin with a conversation that felt genuinely valuable. One that gives you something real to take with you on leadership, culture, confidence, and growth.

And it also feels like the right moment for it.

At a time when even companies like Meta, Disney, Microsoft, Omnicom, etc. are reshaping teams and cutting roles as they reorganize around AI, the need to keep learning, adapting, and building with intention feels more real than ever. This is not about reacting to headlines. It is about recognizing what this moment is asking of all of us.

That’s why we’re starting with Leslie Ferraro, former President and CEO of QVC and HSN.

Leslie has led some of the most iconic brands in the world at extraordinary scale. At QVC and HSN, she ran a $9 billion business, helping shape retail through storytelling and live commerce. Before that, she spent nearly two decades at Disney, where she served as President of Disney Consumer Products and later as Co-Chair of Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, helping drive growth across Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars while also playing a key role in expanding Disney experiences globally.

She is also known for breaking through the glass ceiling and helping make it easier for those who came after her to do the same. As a female leader, mother of three, and someone in a dual-career marriage, she overcame incredible obstacles to build the career she did.

She now teaches at NYU Stern, serves on several respected boards, advises new ventures, and continues to invest in the next generation of leaders.

She is also someone who has mentored both Shruti and myself professionally and personally, which made this first episode even more meaningful to record. She has shown up for us in the moments that mattered most, from urgent client crises late at night to the times when we did not know how to handle our daughter’s abundance of energy. Having mentors in our life, like Leslie, has taught us that we can’t do this alone, nor were we ever intended to do so. That’s why we are bringing The Learning Lounge to you.

And that came through immediately in the conversation.

“Culture is one of the most important long-term competitive advantages that any company can have.”

She shared clear, practical, and deeply earned advice that often no one talks about.

• “You do not need to do the job the way the last person did it. Shape the role around your strengths, your season of life, and the outcome you need to deliver.” — 01:03:54

• “Athletes often make strong hires because they understand discipline, repetition, teamwork, listening, and resilience.” Leslie had told Shruti and me early on to hire athletes because those qualities often show up not just in strong employees, but in strong leaders. That same thinking led her to encourage us to put Aria in gymnastics early, which has been tremendously helpful as she has grown." — 01:11:06

• Curiosity is a career superpower. A strong path is often built by staying open to learning, not by following one rigid plan. — 01:48:41

• Product-market fit starts with honesty, not ego. Loving an idea does not automatically mean there is a real market for it. — 01:33:55

• Mentorship matters, but sponsorship matters too. Guidance helps, but advocacy in rooms you are not in is often what changes trajectories. — 01:21:52

• Women are often stronger advocates for others than for themselves. Great leaders recognize that and actively pull people forward. — 01:18:41

• Great leaders listen, explain decisions, and stay accessible. People do better work when they feel heard and respected. — 01:41:36

• Trust your gut, but do the homework first. Get to good enough, move, and adjust. Perfection is often just “delay” in another form. — 01:11:36

That is exactly why Leslie was the right person to begin with.

And through this experience of building The Learning Lounge, I am realizing something else too: I am becoming the Chief Learning Officer at DANG.

Not in a formal sense. In a real one.

The work is not just to share these conversations with our audience. It is to decode them, apply them, and let them sharpen how we think, build, and lead. I have learned so much through this process already.

One of the biggest lessons we took to heart right away was the need to stay obsessively focused on the customer. So we went back to the data and sharpened six audience archetypes we are building The Learning Lounge for:

The Career Upgrade Seeker
The Builder in Motion
The Identity-Forward Leader
The Creator-to-Founder
The Parent-Builder / Life Integrator, and
The Mid-Level Switcher.

These are the mindsets we are now thinking about more clearly as we shape the conversations, the content, and where this platform goes next.

And if I’m being honest, I was nervous going into this one.

When it’s the first episode, you want everything to feel right. The conversation. The energy. The format. The tone.

A lot goes into that before the cameras even start rolling.

We begin with a real briefing. We think carefully about the segments. Even something like the chai segment is intentional. Chai in India is a cultural cornerstone, serving as a social equalizer, daily ritual, and gesture of hospitality that fosters conversation and community. Chai acts as a conversation starter and “social lubricant,” bringing together friends, family, and strangers for conversations, gossip, or political debate.

We take a moment to meditate before we begin. It helps ground the room. It helps everyone arrive fully. And I think you can feel the difference in the conversation.

Because what you see is the episode.

What sits behind it is a lot of care from our production team, our social team, and everyone helping bring this to life in the right way.

And as part of that same momentum, Shruti spoke at the Own It Conference in Chicago last April 16. It gave us a strong platform to talk about vision and the kind of work we’re building toward. It also gave us a chance to celebrate two years of DANG. Shruti and the team were able to have celebratory cheers to honor the two year anniversary and all the work that has gone into getting us here.

And before we get into more below, a few shifts we’ve been paying attention to this week: The Devil Wears Prada 2 and what it says about legacy media losing authority, the Met Gala and how attention is structured into value, and the Bezos boycott as a reminder that community action is now designed for visibility too. Different stories, same pattern: culture, commerce, and community now move inside the same system.

That is what feels meaningful about this moment.

The Met Gala is often described as a cultural moment, but the numbers tell a different story.

In 2026, the event generated a record $42 million in a single night, reinforcing its position as one of the most powerful fundraising and brand platforms in the world. That level of output doesn’t come from visibility alone. It comes from structure.

Everything about the Met Gala is designed. Access is limited, attendance is controlled, and participation is curated. The result is a system where scarcity, attention, and meaning compound over time.

What makes this model effective is not scale, but precision.

The event concentrates cultural relevance into a single moment, then extends it outward through media, conversation, and institutional value. It drives immediate outcomes, funding, visibility, partnerships, while also sustaining long-term impact through exhibitions, brand alignment, and continued public attention.

At the same time, that concentration of attention creates exposure.

This year’s backlash around Jeff Bezos didn’t sit outside the event. It became part of it. The same system that amplifies brands also amplifies criticism. Visibility works in both directions.

That’s the trade-off.

The more controlled and high-profile the platform becomes, the more it attracts both commercial interest and public scrutiny.

Ahead of the event, activists projected boycott messages directly onto Jeff Bezos’s Manhattan residence, calling out Amazon’s labor practices and his role as co-chair. The action was part of a broader campaign that included street posters, staged visuals, and coordinated messaging across the city.

It was designed.

The timing, the location, the format, everything was built around the moment when attention would be highest. The Met Gala concentrates visibility. The campaign inserted itself directly into that same stream.

First of all, apologies for the long hiatus. It’s been a whirlwind… in all the right ways. And today feels like the right moment to come back.

Because today is special. Shruti and I complete two years of DANG.

If I had to sum it up in one word, it would be simple: learning.

Learning business. Learning legal. Learning how to sell, how to build, how to lead.

How to write contracts. How to build creds. How to pitch and how to lose. How to win our first AOR. Learning how to launch a streetwear brand, scale globally, and build fandom from the ground up.

A lot of late nights. A lot of unknowns. A lot of figuring it out in real time. No playbook. Just progression.

And that’s the thing I’ve come to appreciate most… learning isn’t a phase. It’s the system.

Everything we’ve built has come through it. Across careers. Across countries. Across entirely different chapters of life.

But more importantly, it’s come from people.

Mentors. Peers. Voices who showed up at the right time and shared perspective when we needed it most. The kind of learning that doesn’t live in books or frameworks, but in conversations… in rooms… in moments that stay with you.

And that realization has been sitting with me for a while.

So to mark two years, and to stay true to that spirit, we’re ready to share what we’ve been building.

The Learning Lounge.

A podcast, yes. But more importantly, a third space for ambitious creatives, executives, and entrepreneurs who are navigating growth in real time.

This platform is our way of paying it forward.

Turning lived experience into something others can grow through too.

At its core, it’s rooted in a simple belief:

learning shouldn’t be gatekept, and growth shouldn’t happen alone.

Still a student. Always will be.

DESIGN

From day one, we knew this couldn’t just be another set.

Everything had to be intentional.

We commissioned an Indian artist to hand-sew a tapestry inspired by Emperor Akbar’s court. Behind our guests, we’re building a living wall of Indian craftsmanship…zardozi, phulkari, chikankari, each piece carrying its own story.

Even the chai set was sourced from India… A Blossoming Garden on a Tea Mug, inspired by the Mughal Nishaat gardens overlooking Dal Lake in Srinagar.

This isn’t decor.

It’s context.

PRODUCTION

We’ve been deep in production and post-production over the past few weeks.

Filming the first five episodes has been a learning curve in itself. Different muscle, same principles. Story, structure, timing, flow.

We’ve built an 18-step production system, fully mapped and automated through Airtable with our operations team. Every stage, from guest prep to post, is designed for scale without losing depth.

And we’ve locked in our first live day: April 29th.

GUEST EXPERIENCE

At the heart of everything is one philosophy:

Atithi Devo Bhava - The guest is sacred.

From the moment someone walks in, the pace shifts. The environment softens. There’s a moment of stillness before anything begins… a chance to arrive fully, not perform.

Because when the environment changes, the conversation changes.

In India, some of the most meaningful conversations happen over tea. Mentorship. Life advice. Big decisions.

Tea slows things down. It creates honesty.

So we’ve built that into the format.

At a certain point, we pause. Pour chai. And invite our guest to “spill the tea”… the most valuable piece of wisdom they’ve learned along the way.

And that’s when things open up.

As you can probably tell, I’m nerding out a bit here.

But I’m genuinely excited. It feels like everything I’ve learned across entrepreneurship, social media, marketing, and leadership over the past two decades is being poured into this.

From filming the first few episodes… to stepping into something that’s been a long time in the making…

To taking a quick pause in Waikiki for Aria’s birthday (and somehow getting an entire room to sing “6-7”)… which, in its own way, gave us clarity on everything we’re building.

There’s a rhythm to all of this.

On the agency side, we’ve also hit an exciting milestone with a new partnership. I can’t share much yet, but let’s just say it sits right at the intersection of where we’ve been building our expertise… and where culture is headed next.

At the same time, the world of social media and artificial intelligence continues to evolve at a pace that feels almost absurd. Every week there’s a new standoff, a new model, a new policy shift. I’m sure many of you have been tracking the ongoing tension between AI companies and the U.S. government… debates around regulation, power, ownership, and who ultimately shapes the systems shaping us.

And then, in the same scroll, you have the CEO of McDonald’s being mocked on social media for struggling to eat the Big Arch burger in a viral clip… followed almost immediately by the Burger King president taking a theatrical bite of an oversized burger in what felt like a perfectly timed, culturally fluent response. Corporate rivalry now plays out as meme warfare. Brand positioning happens in comment sections. Culture is no longer downstream from marketing, it is the marketing.

This is the paradox we’re living in.

High-stakes geopolitical tension on one end.

Algorithmic arms races on another.

And in between, executives becoming punchlines in real time.

It’s fast. It’s reactive. It’s performative.

And it pushed us to design for something more grounded.

For the past few months, we’ve been working n the podcast but the last few weeks especially, we’ve been immersed in building out the set for what we’re calling The Learning Lounge. A sanctuary. A sound stage. And honestly, a happy place for both of us.

For a long time, Shruti and I had talked about creating a meditation room in our home. A high-frequency space. Somewhere intentional. When we began designing the in-person experience for The Learning Lounge, those two ideas merged. The studio became more than a backdrop. It became a room with energy.

No shoes allowed. Not as a rule, but as a reset.

We were raised with the idea of Atithi Devo Bhavo… the guest is God. It’s not branding. It’s cultural memory. In Indian households, hospitality is spiritual. When someone enters your home, you don’t ask what they do. You ask how they are.

As our guests arrive, they are welcomed with a small ritual of grounding and gratitude. A non-alcoholic spritzer is placed gently in their hand.

Ayurvedic incense lingers in the air. A humidifier carries warmth. High-frequency music hums beneath the room. The walls tell stories before we do… where I come from, where Shruti comes from, where we began, and how far we’ve traveled together. Before a single camera turns on, the space communicates something simple: you don’t have to perform here.

Because this isn’t about extraction. It’s about inquiry.

We’ve been building The Learning Lounge not as a show, but as a system. A room designed for deeper thinking in a world that rewards velocity. A place where operators can speak honestly about decisions, trade-offs, mistakes, and recalibrations without compressing it

into a soundbite.

Soon, we’ll open the doors.

Two of our first guests are former senior executives from Disney and Walmart, leaders who didn’t just participate in culture, but helped shape it at scale. People who have lived through cycles. Who have built through tension. Who understand that fundamentals don’t disappear, they evolve.

But before we release, it’s worth pausing to explain what this really represents.

Because this isn’t about adding another podcast to the feed. It’s about building a room worth walking into.

And interestingly, even the name of that room became a small experiment in itself.

Shruti and I had been going back and forth between two possible directions for the show. One leaned more toward personality. The other leaned more toward purpose. Instead of debating endlessly, we decided to test it the way any modern builder would.

We mocked up two simple static posts and put $100 of paid media behind each on Meta to see how the market would respond.

The first concept: The Creativepreneur Couple.

Reach: 3,812,441

The second concept: The Learning Lounge.

Reach: 3,629,913

On the surface, both performed incredibly well. The reach numbers were almost identical.

But when we looked deeper at the behavior metrics, something interesting emerged.

The Learning Lounge saw an average click-through rate north of 90%.

Not just impressions. Actual curiosity. People wanting to learn more.

Which confirmed something we suspected.

“The Creativepreneur Couple” functions as an entity. It describes people.

But The Learning Lounge communicates a benefit. It describes a place people want to enter.

And when we’re building something rooted in learning, mentorship, and conversation, the signal felt pretty clear.

So the name we’re moving forward with is:

The Learning Lounge.

That said, this community has been part of shaping this from day one.

The last few weeks have been full in ways that don’t always show up publicly.

Before I get into what’s been brewing behind the scenes, I want to start with something that genuinely inspired me this past week. Huge congratulations to my mentor and friend Ross Martin and the Known team on the launch of the McDonald’s All American Games documentary in partnership with Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios, and Roc Nation. It’s a powerful reminder of what happens when culture, sport, and storytelling collide the right way. The energy in the room was next level. Jalen Rose brought the gravitas. And when Fat Joe and Jadakiss started recording live for their podcast, it shifted from premiere night to full cultural moment. That’s the kind of layered execution I always talk about, where content becomes event, and event becomes culture.

As DANG continues to grow, I’ve been thinking a lot about trust. About what it means when brands, founders, and operators choose to work with us not just because we understand culture, but because they trust our vision for where culture is going. That kind of trust is not built on decks. It’s built on pattern recognition. On showing up consistently. On being willing to see around corners before others do.

At the same time, I’ve also been reminded that not everyone sees the paradigm shift the same way. Some people are comfortable optimizing the present. Others feel compelled to redesign the future. That tension is real. And navigating it requires something deeper than tactics. It requires taste. It requires discernment. It requires learning.

Which brings me to what’s been sitting quietly in the background of my mind.

For all the talk about content, growth, AI, social-first everything, I’ve realized that the most transformative moments of my career did not come from campaigns or conferences. They came from conversations. Private ones. The kind that happen after the meeting ends. The debrief in the hallway. The car ride after a pitch. The quiet unpacking of how a decision was actually made and why.

That’s where I learned how power really moves. How leaders think through risk. How to read the temperature of a room. How to balance ambition with restraint. How to protect long-term credibility over short-term applause.

And if I’m honest, I didn’t figure that out alone.

I have been incredibly fortunate to have mentors at pivotal moments in my life. From a young age, I had people who showed me that taste matters. That discernment is a skill. That how you carry yourself often matters more than what you say. But it was during my Disney years that mentorship took on a different dimension. A few guardian angels (you know who you are) took me under their wing and showed me that hard skills get you in the door, but soft skills determine whether you’re invited back.

Shruti and I often talk about this. In very different industries, in very different contexts, we both rose through the ranks not just through hard work, but through guidance. Through leaders who trusted us early. Through sponsors who opened rooms we weren’t yet qualified for on paper. Through mentors who were generous with context, not just opportunity. Neither of us built in isolation. We were shaped by people who chose to share what they knew.

That lesson never left either of us.

Over the last five years, I’ve mentored more than 40 individuals across wildly different paths. Creatives who’ve gone on to win multiple Grand Prix. Executives running hundreds of millions of dollars for global brands. Entrepreneurs building from zero. People pivoting careers entirely. Hairstylists. Strategists. Founders. Operators. Builders trying to make sense of their next chapter.

In every case, the pattern is the same. What people are hungry for is not information. There is plenty of that. They are hungry for context. For clarity. For someone to explain the room.

I’ve experimented with building structured programs. I’ve tried Discord-based mentorship models. I’ve tried informal cohorts. And while reach is scalable, depth is harder. Sustaining real mentorship requires infrastructure, intention, and time.

At the same time, I’ve watched how the broader ecosystem has shifted. Institutions feel less stable. Career paths are less linear. AI is accelerating everything. And yet mentorship…the one thing that actually shapes long-term trajectories, has quietly become more scarce.

That tension has been sitting with me.

We are living in a moment where more people than ever want to build something. A company. A creative career. A personal brand. A body of work that matters. But the language around building has fractured. It’s either overly abstract and filled with jargon, or overly motivational and stripped of substance. There is very little that sits in the middle… grounded, practical, emotionally honest.

And I keep coming back to one question: what if access to how real builders think didn’t have to depend on proximity or access?

Not highlight reels. Not keynote speeches. Not perfectly packaged “origin stories.” But real conversations about how decisions are made under pressure. What gets unlearned. Where people were wrong. How they recalibrated. What they protected. What they sacrificed.

That question has been slowly turning into something tangible.

Shruti and I are building a new platform centered around learning. Working name: The Learning Lounge.

Not as content for the algorithm, but as a container for depth. Long-form, research-driven conversations with people who have lived through cycles and adapted in real time. People who understand that fundamentals don’t disappear, they evolve.

This is not about launching “another podcast.” It’s about creating a space where experience can be translated, not just admired. Where ambition meets wisdom. Where frameworks are unpacked, not just quoted. And where two operators who have lived inside different systems can sit at the same table and ask better questions together.

I’m writing this from a very real middle seat on a Southwest flight. First time flying them. Did not realize seat assignments were… vibes-based. It’s been a few weeks since CES, and it feels like a lot has shifted. In marketing. In creativity. In fashion. In how people are paying attention. Valentino passed. Icons are leaving us. New voices are rising. The industry feels like it’s quietly shedding skin again.

The past few weeks at DANG have been full in the best way. New talent joining. New roles opening. New systems getting tightened behind the scenes. And moments that feel like signals that the work we’ve been doing is resonating beyond our walls.

I was invited back as a returning judge for The Webby Awards this year, one of the most respected global stages for internet culture, creativity, and digital excellence. The Webbys aren’t about trends for trend’s sake; they’re a pulse check on where the internet is actually going. What gets awarded there often becomes the blueprint a year later.

And in what feels like a very on-brand household moment: Shruti was invited to serve as a jury member for the prestigious Shorty Awards. So between the Webbys and the Shortys, I think it’s fair to say we’ve got the internet covered from both sides of the feed. Different lenses, same obsession: culture, community, and what actually moves people.

I was also invited to contribute to the Social-First Trends 2026 report, a deep dive compiled with insights from the world, mapping what’s next for social as it becomes even more embedded in commerce, culture, and behavior. The report digs into things like the post-trend era, the death of the traditional funnel, and how social is no longer a channel, it’s the operating layer. The last few weeks have been a strange collision of beginnings and scale. A new year. A new chapter for the company. And, at home, a brand new human being. Our son Blue Vir Dang arrived in December, and with him came that familiar recalibration that only a newborn can bring. Nights stretch longer. Days feel sharper. Everything that once felt urgent starts sorting itself into what matters and what does not.

Around the same time, another chapter quietly came to a close. Our Welcoming America initiative officially wrapped, and I want to pause here to say thank you. To everyone in this community who showed up, shared the work, spread the message, donated, or simply took the time to listen—your support carried that movement further than we ever could have alone. What started as a personal story became a collective one, and that’s the part I’ll carry forward. The work of welcoming doesn’t end. It just moves into new hands, new rooms, new conversations.

We also closed the year with a small holiday drop - 50 only. Matcha green. Quarter zip. No noise. Built with intention, guided by clarity.

I held a handful back for the inner circle, and released the rest quietly through our Discord. No blast. No countdown. Just those who were paying attention.

There is something about holding something fragile while also carrying something ambitious that changes how you see the future. You stop chasing speed. You start designing for durability. That shift has quietly been happening inside DANG too. We are building with more intention now. Less noise. More signal. More care for what lasts.

In the middle of all this, we welcomed Utsav Dang as our Head of Client Strategy. Utsav has built his career inside complex organizations, helping leaders move forward without breaking the systems or trust that already exist. He’s worked across markets, industries, and institutions, partnering closely with executives to turn ambition into durable growth.

What sets him apart is his ability to modernize from the inside out, bringing clarity to complexity, structure to scale, and momentum without disruption. He understands that real transformation isn’t just about new ideas, it’s about building the right operating models, teams, and partnerships to sustain them. That kind of thinking feels especially important in the moment we’re in.

Everything feels like it is being reassembled. Family. Company. Culture. Even the way we relate to technology. You can feel it in the air if you slow down enough to listen.

And when you do, you start to notice that the world is not getting louder. It is getting more layered.

Feels good to be back here with you all. The past three weeks have been a whirlwind of life, work, and everything in between. Shruti and I have been juggling a few big chapters…some deeply personal, others foundational for the next phase of DANG.

Since the last issue, we’ve been waist-deep in building new systems, tightening the backend, and standing up infrastructure for a series of initiatives that will shape where we’re headed next. At the same time, we’re preparing our home and our hearts to welcome our little one. Our third baby if you count the company as the second, which honestly feels accurate most days.

It’s been a season of expansion. Quiet, meaningful, structural expansion.

And in the middle of all of that, I’ve been reminded of something I tell every team, every client, every student:

Great creative doesn’t begin with a brainstorm. It begins with listening.

During my lecture at NYU Stern School of Business last week, I shared how digital anthropology shapes every project we take on at DANG.

You immerse yourself in the digital spaces where identity is formed and performed….subreddits, Discords, niche group chats, fandom forums, private feeds. You don’t go in to judge or to extract. You go in to observe.

You watch how people reveal themselves through jokes, rituals, aesthetics, collectives. You study how emotion, belonging, aspiration, and anxiety show up in the smallest signals…an edit, an upvote, a stitch, a meme.

Patterns emerge. Codes reveal themselves. You begin to understand culture not as content, but as behavior.

Then, and only then, do you look back at the brand. What does it stand for What does it protect? What can it meaningfully contribute? Where does it naturally intersect with what culture is already saying?

That intersection becomes the creative brief.

And the brief becomes work that resonates. Patterns emerge. Motivations become clearer.

You understand not what people say they want, but how they behave when no one is watching. Then the real work begins. You map those patterns back to a brand’s mission, values, purpose.

You find the intersection point between what culture is craving and what the brand can meaningfully add. That intersection becomes the brief. And the brief becomes work that resonates.

But then, this happened and it reinforced everything I’ve been saying:

An AI artist just hit #1 on the Billboard Country Chart.

Not a novelty. Not a stunt. A genuine chart-topper.

Depending on who you ask, this is either the end of authenticity or the beginning of opportunity.

To me, it’s neither. It’s a signal.

A signal that the creative ecosystem is expanding. That talent is decentralizing. That the gatekeepers are shifting.

That new voices, synthetic or not will shape new genres, new audiences, new worlds.

This moment isn’t about replacing human creativity. It’s about multiplying who gets to participate in it.

That is the world we’re building for at DANG. A world where culture is not a broadcast, but a network.

Where influence is not a metric, but an infrastructure. Where creativity belongs to more people, not fewer.

Before I wrap, I want to share something I’ve been quietly diving into over the past few days.

Every December, I write my Top 5 Predictions for the year ahead. It began as a personal reflection years ago, but it has grown into something that gets shared across continents, from CEOs and creators to universities and agencies.

I write them the same way each year: late at night, in full focus, stitching together what I’ve learned from clients, students, subcultures, and the internet’s hidden corners. It’s the most meditative part of my creative year.

And I’ve just begun the 2026 edition.

I won’t give away too much, but I will say this: the shifts taking shape are seismic.

In all honesty, this is me putting this newsletter together last minute. I’m finally catching my breath after what’s been a blur of two very full weeks at DANG.

We’ve had incredible new talent join the team, new roles opening up (if you know a brilliant in Social Art Director, Social Creative producer and a Social media Manager, please send them our way), and the kind of momentum that reminds me why we started this thing in the first place.

But the highlight of these past two weeks? ComplexCon. I got the invite while i was in New York and knew I had to make it happen.

Booked a 16-hour sprint to Vegas…flew in, hit the floor, flew back the same night. There’s something about that city. It’s loud, cinematic, unapologetically excessive.

And ComplexCon matched that energy beat for beat. The lines? Wild. The fits? Surgical. The air? Electric.

But beyond the noise, there was something deeper happening. Because ComplexCon isn’t just an event, it’s a living pulse check on culture. It’s where content becomes commerce, and commerce becomes connection.

Pop-ups weren’t stores….they were statements. Every booth was its own micro-universe. Stainless steel builds. LED-lit sanctuaries. Soundtracked shopping. World-building wasn’t the backdrop—it was the product.

One of the best pop-up was by my friends for the Walmart X Dickies Collab…fully raw, stripped-down, all steel. Inside, you could take original Dickies and fully customize them embroidery, patches, your personal spin.

And that became my biggest takeaway of the weekend: Customization is the new status. People don’t just want to own the drop…they want to author it.

That energy echoed everywhere I looked.

From Adidas to Espolòn to Born x Raised….every brand was telling a story bigger than product. It was identity, nostalgia, and narrative stitched into fabric. What struck me most was how intentional it all felt. No hard sells. No shouting. Just spaces built to make you feel something.

Experience was the currency. Complex has always understood that the real flex isn’t hype….it’s harmony. Bringing content, commerce, and community into one shared rhythm.

Standing there in a crowd of sixty-plus-thousand people, I couldn’t help but think: this is what the internet feels like when it finally steps into the real world.

But beneath the surface outrage lies something deeper: a cultural shift. For years, nostalgia has been the safest emotional button in marketing. It’s comfort, it’s warmth, it’s guaranteed virality.

But next-gen is over it when it feels manufactured. They can tell when you’re celebrating culture versus using it. What’s happening now is a form of nostalgia fatigue…. when feel-good memories get stripped of meaning by over-commercialization.

Dear Community,

Okay, it’s 6:36 p.m. somewhere in the middle of America and I’m up in the air, flying back from New York to L.A. after nearly three weeks on the road. Which also explains why I’ve been a little quiet here.

There’s a lot to catch you up on. All good things.

First off, I turned 40 last month and Shruti threw the most incredible backyard bash: a private omakase dinner party curated by Chef Michelle and the Starlight Sushi team. It was intimate, soulful, filled with friends, music, and a few too many spritzers (well, for everyone else more on that in a second).

Leading up to that night, I set myself a challenge: lose 20 pounds in 7 weeks. I wanted to start this next decade feeling lighter… mentally, physically, spiritually. And I did it.

But what meant even more was using that milestone to give back. Instead of gifts, I asked friends and family to donate to Welcoming America, the organization behind our E Pluribus Unum collaboration. We even transformed part of the backyard into a small walk-through exhibit photos of my grandparents, my father, and our refugee lineage, alongside sketches and fabric swatches from the capsule. It was a celebration of life, legacy, and purpose… past, present, and future stitched together. Oh and by the way, we got shoutouts from some industry bigwigs for our campaign..

And speaking of turning 40, to mark the milestone, I set myself a challenge: 40 sets in 40 minutes. And we did it.

Huge gratitude to my trainer Johnny Vong for pushing me past my limits, to Shruti for being my constant support + motivation, and to my brother Utsav for showing up in solidarity and grinding it out with me until the very last rep. This wasn’t just about fitness, it was about discipline, resilience, and stepping into this next decade with purpose and strength. No alcohol since July 1st, and honestly, it feels incredible. Here is a little sneak peak of the 40 challenge…

Now for the highlight of these past few weeks, something deeply special for both Shruti and me.

Back in April, Shruti was looking for a birthday gift for our daughter something physical, playful, and family-centered. She stumbled on a new console on Amazon called NEX Playground. We bought it instantly, and our Friday family nights haven’t been the same since.
