Far from it.

When I was young, speaking up did not come naturally to me.

Then something changed.

I got involved in acting in high school. I participated in speech competitions. And somewhere along the way, I had a communications teacher named Mrs. Wallick.

Those experiences began teaching me something I wouldn’t fully understand until much later:

Communication is not a personality trait. It is a skill.

That distinction matters more today than it ever has.

Because I meet far too many intelligent, capable adults who have decided that the way they communicate is simply “who they are.”

“I’m an introvert.”

“I’m not good at speaking.”

“I get nervous in meetings.”

“I ramble.”

“I don’t think quickly on my feet.”

“English isn’t my first language.”

“I’m just not a confident person.”

We turn communication behaviors into identities. Then we live inside those identities.

I could have done that too. I could have decided I was the shy girl. Instead, I realized that communication is a behavior. And, behaviors can be learned.

So I did. I learned. I practiced. I performed. I competed. I watched other people.

I discovered what happened when I changed my voice, my words, my timing, my delivery, and eventually my thinking.

None of it happened overnight.

That is precisely the point.

Great communicators are developed.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Because one person has learned how to make their intelligence visible. Communication does that.

Test Your Communication Skills Here

AI Is Making This More Important

There is another reason I believe communication development deserves much more attention now.

AI can help almost anyone produce impressive information.

It can give you the research. It can organize your thoughts. It can write your presentation. It can even suggest exactly what you should say.

Wonderful.

BUT… now YOU have to say it.

That is where things get interesting.

YOU still have to walk into the meeting. YOU still have to answer the unexpected question. YOU still have to respond when someone disagrees with you.

You still have to sound like a human being worth listening to.

You still have to establish credibility. You still have to read the room. You still have to know when to speak and when to stop speaking.

AI can improve the quality of your communication product. But it cannot automatically make you a great communicator.

In fact, I think AI is about to make the difference between those two abilities painfully obvious.

This Is Especially Important for Global Professionals

I see another version of this with professionals who speak English as a second language.

Many assume their biggest communication problem is their accent. Usually, it isn’t.

An accent tells me where you came from. It does not tell me whether you are intelligent, competent, strategic, or capable of leadership.

The bigger problems are often clarity, organization, pacing, pronunciation, confidence, word choice, and the ability to make an idea easy for another person to understand.

Like all communication, those are behaviors. Behaviors can be learned… and improved.

Perfect English isn’t the goal. Effective communication is.

The professional who spends years worrying about eliminating an accent may be working on the wrong problem. “Can I sound like a native English speaker?” is not the right question.

The better question is: “Can people easily understand my ideas?”

That question applies to native English speakers too. I have heard plenty of native speakers make a perfectly pronounced mess of a perfectly good idea.

Clarity is critical for all people.

Stop Treating Communication Like Talent

One of the reasons I have become so passionate about teaching communication is that I know what happens when people believe good communicators were simply born that way.

They give themselves permission not to improve. They assume confidence belongs to someone else. They watch a powerful speaker and think, “I could never do that.”

Maybe you couldn’t do it today. That doesn’t mean you couldn’t learn.

Learn Here For Free

I am living proof.

The shy girl did not disappear because someone handed her confidence. She developed skills. The skills created better experiences and evidence that she could do it. That evidence created confidence.

And eventually communication became a career. That progression matters.

We often wait to feel confident before we act.

Communication frequently works in the opposite direction.

You practice the behavior first. Confidence catches up.

Your Current Communication Style Is Not Your Final One

This is what I want more people to understand.

The way you communicate today is not a permanent condition.

If you ramble, you can learn to organize your thoughts. If you freeze under pressure, you can learn how to respond without panicking. If people interrupt you, you can learn how to hold the floor.

If you sound defensive, you can learn to regulate your response. If your presentations lack authority, you can learn executive presence.

If English is your second language, you can become dramatically clearer without erasing who you are. If you are invisible in meetings, you can learn how to contribute in a way people remember.

These are behaviors. Behaviors can change.

I wish more professionals understood that before they spent years believing they simply weren’t “good communicators.”

The Next Communication Divide

I believe we are entering an era in which communication ability will become more valuable, not less.

AI will make knowledge easier to access and make competent writing easier to produce. It will make polished information abundant.

That means being able to stand behind that information becomes more important. Can you explain it, defend it, and simplify it?

Can you adapt it when someone doesn’t understand? Can you discuss it without reading a script? Can you make another human being trust you?

Those are human communication skills. They are learnable.

I know because I learned them.

And after decades of working in communication, I am still learning them.

Maybe that is the real secret of becoming a great communicator. You never actually finish. You simply keep getting better.

The shy child that was me would probably be rather surprised by where all that practice eventually led.

Mrs. Wallick might not be.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. I see it as a challenge.

Not a challenge to compete with AI. A challenge to become more human.

The professionals who thrive over the next decade won’t simply know more than everyone else. Knowledge is becoming available to everyone.

The professionals who thrive will know how to connect and explain complex ideas simply. They will know how to reduce fear during difficult conversations and build trust before asking for commitment. They will know how to help people feel respected, even when they disagree.

Those skills are difficult to automate because they require something uniquely human… Judgment. Empathy. I had prepared carefully. My slides were polished. My examples were relevant. I answered every question.

On paper, it was a success.

Afterward, someone approached me and said something I’ll never forget.

“I don’t remember much of what you said, but I remember how confident and calm you were. You made me feel like I could do this too.”

At first, I wasn’t sure how to take that. Part of me wanted people to remember every point I made.

Then I realized something important. They remembered the part that mattered most.

Communication isn’t measured by how much information you transfer. It’s measured by the impression you leave behind.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. You probably don’t remember every conversation. You probably can’t repeat every piece of advice they gave you. But you remember how you felt after being with them.

You felt respected. Encouraged. Seen. Capable. Safe enough to ask questions. Confident enough to take the next step.

That is influence.

We spend so much time worrying about the words we use that we forget another message is being delivered at the same time.

Our tone communicates. Our patience communicates. Our curiosity communicates. Our facial expressions communicate. Our willingness to listen communicates. Even our silence communicates.

Long after your words have faded, those messages remain.

I’ve coached professionals who were technically brilliant but left people feeling intimidated.

I’ve coached others who occasionally searched for the right word but consistently made people feel valued.

Guess which ones people wanted to work with. Fortunately, it’s also a skill.

It’s developed one interaction at a time.

This is especially encouraging for professionals who speak English as a second language.

Many worry that people notice every pronunciation mistake. Most people don’t remember your small mistakes. They remember whether you were thoughtful.

Whether you listened. Whether you respected their ideas. Whether you helped solve a problem.

Clarity matters. Pronunciation matters. But connection matters even more. Good communication helps create that connection.

The next time you walk into an important meeting, don’t make your goal to impress everyone. Make your goal to leave people feeling heard.

Leave them feeling respected. Leave them feeling more confident than when they walked in. Ironically, that’s when people begin to see you as a stronger communicator.

I’ve spent my career teaching communication. I don’t believe that anymore.

The most influential people I’ve met ask remarkable questions.

Not because they don’t know enough. But because they understand that every great conversation begins with understanding someone else’s world.

Curiosity is one of the rarest communication skills today.

We live in a culture that rewards quick opinions.

People interrupt. They assume. They prepare their response while someone else is still talking. They confuse waiting with listening.

Real curiosity is different.

It slows you down. It forces you to notice. It reminds you that every person is carrying experiences you cannot see.

When people feel genuinely understood, something changes. Their shoulders relax. Their defenses lower. They become willing to share more.

Only then can real communication begin.

I’ve watched this happen hundreds of times in coaching sessions.

A manager arrives frustrated because an employee “just doesn’t get it.” A husband believes his wife isn’t listening. An executive thinks her team lacks motivation. An entrepreneur feels customers don’t appreciate the value of the service.

Often the breakthrough comes from one simple question: “What am I missing?”

That question changes the direction of the conversation.

Instead of proving your point, you begin discovering theirs.

That doesn’t mean you always agree. It means you understand before you respond.

There is enormous power in that sequence.

Many people mistake curiosity for weakness. The opposite is true.

Defensive people rush to conclusions. Confident people investigate.

Weak communicators assume. Strong communicators explore.

The best leaders I’ve worked with rarely enter a meeting believing they already know everything.

They arrive with opinions. They leave with perspective. Those are not the same thing.

This matters even more in the age of artificial intelligence.

AI can answer almost any question. What it cannot do is replace genuine human curiosity. It cannot notice subtle emotions. It cannot recognize hesitation in someone’s voice. The difference was psychology.

Great communicators understand that emotion arrives before logic.

People decide whether they are open to hearing you long before they evaluate your evidence. That’s why influence begins with curiosity instead of certainty.

Instead of saying, “Here’s why you’re wrong,” they ask, “Help me understand how you reached that conclusion.”

One sentence lowers defenses. Many ESL professionals assume they need more vocabulary to become influential.

Vocabulary helps. They rarely remember the person who used the biggest words.

Influence is not a language competition. It is a human connection.

Artificial intelligence can produce flawless reports. It can organize research in seconds. It can summarize books, meetings, and data almost instantly.

What it cannot replace is your ability to understand another human being.

That is becoming your competitive advantage.

The future belongs to professionals who know how to reduce defensiveness, build trust, and help people think more clearly.

Facts still matter. They don’t lecture. They don’t try to prove how smart they are.

Yet when they speak, people stop talking. People listen. People remember.

That isn’t an accident.

It’s a communication skill.

Learn The Skill Here

For years, I believed influence came from having better ideas. If I could gather enough facts, prepare enough examples, or explain something thoroughly enough, people would naturally agree with me.

Reality taught me something very different.

People are rarely persuaded by the person who says the most. They are persuaded by the person who creates the most clarity.

Those are two very different things.

The strongest communicators understand that every unnecessary sentence weakens the important ones. Every side story competes with the main message. Every extra explanation asks the audience to work harder.

Most people don’t notice when they are doing this. They believe they are being helpful.

The human brain loves simplicity. It remembers patterns. It remembers contrasts. It remembers short, meaningful statements. It forgets long explanations almost immediately.

This matters more today than ever before.

We are surrounded by information. Artificial intelligence can generate reports, presentations, emails, proposals, and endless pages of text in seconds.

Information is becoming abundant. Attention is becoming scarce.

The professionals who thrive will not be the ones who know the most. They will be the ones who help other people understand the fastest. That is influence.

Influence isn’t talking people into something. It is removing confusion.

Every leader should ask a simple question before speaking: “What is the one thing I want them to remember tomorrow?”

Not ten things. One.

When you identify that one idea, everything else becomes easier.

You know what to include. You know what to remove. You know when to stop talking.

That last one is surprisingly difficult. Silence often feels uncomfortable. Many people rush to fill it.

Confident communicators don’t. They make a point. They pause. They allow people to think.

The pause gives your message room to breathe. It gives your audience time to absorb what you just said.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. Everything changed about how they delivered it.

The same principle applies outside the boardroom.

Parents. Teachers. Sales professionals. Entrepreneurs. Podcast hosts.

Anyone who wants to change minds must first earn attention. You earn attention by making thinking easier, not harder.

Learn How Here

This is especially important for professionals who speak English as a second language.

Many ESL professionals worry that their accent is the reason people don’t remember what they say.

Sometimes pronunciation needs work. More often, the bigger opportunity is message design.

A clear, organized message delivered with confidence will outperform a complicated message delivered with perfect pronunciation almost every time.

Your audience wants to understand you. They often leave wishing someone had been clearer.

The next time you prepare for an important conversation, don’t ask yourself how much you should say. Ask yourself what deserves to be remembered.

That single question can change the way people hear you.

When people hear you differently, they begin to trust you differently. wasn’t strong enough. Sometimes that’s true. Often, it isn’t.

I’ve noticed something fascinating after years of coaching professionals.

People usually don’t evaluate your idea first. They evaluate your thinking. That judgment happens almost instantly.

Long before someone decides whether they agree with you, they’re asking themselves a different question.

“Does this person think clearly?”

We make that decision remarkably fast.

If someone’s explanation wanders, we assume their thinking wanders. If they jump from one point to another without connecting the dots, we assume they haven’t organized their thoughts. If they overcomplicate a simple question, we begin to wonder whether they really understand the subject themselves.

None of those assumptions are necessarily fair. But they happen every day.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. It’s about revealing how your mind works.

Think about the people you immediately respect in meetings. They don’t always have the most creative ideas. They don’t always speak the longest. They rarely speak the loudest.

But when they do speak, everyone follows. Why?

Because their thinking feels organized. They begin with the big picture. They explain one point at a time. They build ideas logically.

By the time they reach their conclusion, everyone has arrived there with them.

That’s not luck. That’s structure.

One of the biggest misconceptions about communication is that speaking well means speaking smoothly. It doesn’t.

Speaking well means helping people think with you.

Imagine giving someone directions. You wouldn’t begin with the last turn. You wouldn’t mention five landmarks before explaining where to start. You naturally organize the journey.

Great communicators do the same thing with ideas. They guide people from uncertainty to understanding.

I’ve coached executives who believed they needed a larger vocabulary. In reality, they needed a clearer sequence.

Their ideas were excellent. Their organization wasn’t.

Once they learned to introduce the topic, explain the reason, support it with one example, and finish with a recommendation, everything changed.

Their meetings became shorter. People interrupted them less. Their recommendations were approved more often.

Nothing changed except the way they organized their thinking.

That tells us something important.

People trust organized minds. Not because organization sounds impressive. Because it reduces uncertainty.

When listeners know where you’re going, they relax. They stop trying to figure out your message and begin paying attention to it.

This is especially encouraging for professionals who speak English as a second language.

Many believe they’re judged primarily by pronunciation or grammar. Those things matter. But they’re rarely the biggest issue.

If your ideas are organized, people naturally become more patient with your language. They can see your thinking. And when people respect your thinking, they usually overlook small language mistakes.

Clarity has a remarkable way of increasing credibility.

Before your next important conversation, don’t ask yourself: “What should I say?”

Ask yourself: “What’s the simplest path from my first sentence to my conclusion?”

That one question can transform your communication.

Your goal isn’t to impress people with everything you know. It’s to help them arrive at the same conclusion you’ve already reached.

When that happens, your ideas become easier to remember. Your recommendations become easier to support. And your leadership becomes easier to trust.

People don’t judge your ideas in isolation. They judge the mind that delivered them.

Fortunately, clear thinking is something you can learn to communicate. One conversation at a time.

Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. because they lack communication skills. Because they know too much.

At first, that sounds impossible. Shouldn’t expertise make communication easier?

Actually, it often does the opposite.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. That’s when communication begins to break down.

I’ve seen it countless times.

An engineer explains a technical problem. A physician describes a diagnosis. An executive outlines a strategy. A software developer demonstrates a new product.

Halfway through the explanation, the audience is lost.

Not because the speaker isn’t intelligent. Because the speaker has forgotten what it feels like to be hearing the information for the first time.

The goal of communication isn’t to demonstrate expertise. It’s to transfer understanding.

Those are two very different goals.

I once coached a brilliant executive who couldn’t understand why his presentations received such little enthusiasm.

“They’re packed with information,” he told me.

He was right. They were.

Every slide contained detailed charts. Industry terminology. Acronyms. Technical explanations.

He wasn’t hiding information. He was overwhelming people with it.

We changed only one thing.

Instead of asking: “What do I want to tell them?”

He started asking: “What do they need to understand?”

That single question transformed every presentation.

He removed unnecessary details. Defined unfamiliar terms. Used simple examples. Paused more often.

By the next quarter, people described his presentations very differently.

“They’re so much easier to follow.”

“I finally understand where we’re going.”

“He’s become one of our best communicators.”

His expertise hadn’t increased. His clarity had.

One of the greatest compliments you can receive isn’t, “You’re brilliant.”

It’s, “You made that easy to understand.”

Unfortunately, many professionals believe simplifying an idea makes them sound less intelligent.

I’ve found exactly the opposite.

The clearest communicators are almost always the most knowledgeable.

Why? Because they understand the subject well enough to remove what doesn’t matter.

Albert Einstein is often credited with saying: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

Whether or not he said those exact words, the principle is remarkably true.

Complexity often hides confusion. Clarity demonstrates mastery.

Think about the teachers who changed your life. They didn’t impress you with difficult vocabulary. They gave you confidence. They took something that seemed impossible and made it understandable.

That’s influence.

Training For ESL Professionals

This lesson is especially important for professionals who speak English as a second language.

Many believe they need a larger vocabulary to sound more intelligent. I usually recommend the opposite.

Choose familiar words. Shorter sentences. Simple structure. Clear examples.

Your goal isn’t to impress people with English. Your goal is to make your thinking impossible to misunderstand.

The most respected leaders I know have learned an important lesson.

People don’t admire complexity. They admire clarity.

They don’t remember every detail you shared. They remember whether your explanation helped them think differently.

Before your next meeting, presentation, or difficult conversation, ask yourself one simple question: “What does this person know that I can safely assume?”

Then ask a second question: “What might they need me to explain?”

Those two questions can completely change the quality of your communication.

Intelligence isn’t measured by how much information you can deliver. It’s measured by how much understanding you create.

Because your knowledge has value. But your ability to share that knowledge clearly... That’s what creates opportunity.

The smartest people in the room aren’t always the ones who know the most. Very often, they’re the ones who make everyone else understand the most.

That’s the psychology of great communicators.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. problem.

Impressive people are often admired. Respected people are remembered.

There’s a difference.

I’ve met executives with remarkable résumés who struggled to earn the respect of their teams.

I’ve also met quiet professionals with no impressive titles who were deeply respected by everyone around them.

The difference wasn’t intelligence. It wasn’t experience. It wasn’t charisma.

It was one habit.

They made other people feel respected first.

That may sound simple.It isn’t.

Learn How Here

Respect is one of the rare things in life that cannot be demanded. It can only be earned.

Yet every day I watch people unintentionally weaken the respect they’re trying so hard to gain.

They interrupt. They finish other people’s sentences. They dismiss ideas before fully hearing them. They check their phones while someone else is talking. They respond before they understand.

None of those behaviors are usually intentional.

They’re simply habits.

Unfortunately, habits become reputations.

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned as a communication coach is this.

People remember how you made them feel long after they forget the details of the conversation.

Did they feel heard?

Did they feel rushed?

Did they feel judged?

Did they feel dismissed?

Or did they leave thinking: “That person genuinely cared about what I had to say.”

That’s respect.

Respect begins with attention.

Real attention.

Not waiting for your turn to speak. Not pretending to listen while mentally preparing your response. Not searching for the perfect comeback.

Just listening.

Listening has become surprisingly rare.

In a world filled with notifications, distractions, and constant interruptions, giving someone your complete attention has become one of the greatest compliments you can offer.

It communicates something words never can.

“You matter.”

Think about the people you respect most.

Chances are they don’t dominate every conversation. They don’t always have the last word. They don’t need to prove they’re the smartest person in the room.

Instead, they create conversations where everyone feels comfortable contributing. That’s leadership.

I’ve coached professionals who wanted to appear more executive.

They asked about posture. Eye contact. Vocabulary. Presentation skills.

Those things certainly matter.

But one habit consistently made the biggest difference.

They stopped trying to impress people. They started trying to understand people.

That single shift changed everything.

Meetings became more collaborative. Clients became more loyal. Teams became more engaged. People naturally began treating them with greater respect.

Why?

Because respect tends to be reciprocal. When people feel valued, they naturally value you in return.

This is especially important for professionals who speak English as a second language.

Many worry that respect depends on sounding like a native speaker. It doesn’t.

Some of the most respected professionals I’ve worked with had noticeable accents.

What earned them respect wasn’t perfect pronunciation. It was their preparation. Their humility. Their curiosity. Their consistency.

And above all, the respect they showed others.

Here’s a challenge for today.

In your next conversation, focus less on what you’re going to say. Focus more on making the other person feel fully heard.

Don’t interrupt. Don’t rush. Don’t assume.

Simply listen with genuine curiosity.

You may be surprised by what happens.

People don’t always remember the smartest person they met. They remember the person who made them feel like they mattered.

That’s why I believe respect isn’t something you ask for. It isn’t something you announce. It isn’t something your job title automatically gives you.

Respect begins with one simple decision.

Treat every conversation as though the other person’s voice deserves to be heard.

Because it does.

And in the end, that’s one of the defining habits of every truly great communicator.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. become someone people trust?”

Because confidence without trust has very little value.

We’ve all met people who were incredibly confident. They spoke with certainty. They had an opinion about everything. They rarely admitted they were wrong.

At first, they seemed impressive. Eventually, they became exhausting.

Confidence may get people’s attention. Trust keeps it.

One of the biggest myths about communication is that trust comes from saying the right thing. I don’t believe that.

Trust comes from making people feel safe. Safe to ask questions. Safe to disagree. Safe to admit they don’t understand. Safe to share an idea that isn’t fully formed.

The moment people feel they have to protect themselves, trust begins to disappear.

Think about the best boss you’ve ever had. Or the best teacher. Or the best friend.

What made them trustworthy?

It probably wasn’t their ability to give speeches. It was how you felt when you were with them. You knew they would listen. You knew they wouldn’t embarrass you. You knew they would tell you the truth, even when it was difficult.

That’s trust.

The good news is that trust isn’t mysterious. It’s built through habits.

Simple habits. Keeping your word. Arriving prepared. Following through. Listening without interrupting. Being honest when you don’t know the answer.

Those habits may not seem dramatic. But together they shape your reputation.

I’ve coached professionals who spent years trying to sound more authoritative. They worked on vocabulary. Body language. Voice. Presentation skills.

Those things matter.

But something more important changed their careers. They became easier to work with.

People stopped worrying about whether conversations would become defensive. Meetings became more productive. Clients became more loyal. Managers gave them greater responsibility.

Not because they suddenly became brilliant. Because they became dependable.

Dependability is one of the most overlooked communication skills.

People trust what they can predict.

If your reactions are unpredictable...

If your promises are inconsistent...

If your mood changes every day...

People naturally become cautious.

Consistency creates psychological safety. Psychological safety creates trust.

There’s another habit I encourage every client to develop.

Assume positive intent.

Instead of asking yourself: “Why are they criticizing me?”

Ask: “What problem are they trying to solve?”

That one question changes the emotional direction of almost every difficult conversation.

Curiosity replaces defensiveness. Understanding replaces assumptions. Respect replaces conflict.

I’ve noticed something interesting over the years.

The professionals who earn trust the fastest aren’t necessarily the smartest people in the room. They’re the people who make everyone else feel smarter.

They explain ideas clearly. They invite opinions. They give credit generously. They make complex conversations feel simple.

That’s a rare skill.

For professionals who speak English as a second language, this is especially encouraging. You don’t have to sound exactly like everyone else to become highly trusted. You don’t need a perfect English accent. You don’t need an advanced vocabulary.

People remember reliability far longer than pronunciation.

If they know you’ll prepare, listen carefully, communicate clearly, and follow through, they’ll trust you.

Trust has very little to do with sounding impressive. The difficult conversation. The major presentation. The crisis. The high-stakes negotiation.

Those moments certainly matter.

But I don’t think that’s where trust is built. I think trust is built long before anyone notices. It’s built in the hundreds of ordinary conversations that most people forget.

Every time you say you’ll call and you do. Every time you admit you don’t know something. Every time you arrive prepared. Every time you explain something clearly instead of making people work to understand you.

Every one of those moments sends a message: Can I count on this person?

Over the years, I’ve coached professionals from every industry. Some were senior executives. Others were just beginning their careers. Some spoke English their entire lives. Others spoke it as a second language.

One pattern never changes.

The people who earn trust the fastest aren’t necessarily the most charismatic. They are the most consistent. Their words and actions match. When they make a mistake, they acknowledge it. When they make a commitment, they keep it. When they don’t have an answer, they say so.

Ironically, those moments don’t make them look weaker. They make them look believable.

Learn How Here

Too many people think credibility comes from sounding perfect. It doesn’t.

Credibility comes from sounding authentic.

We’ve all met someone who always seemed to have the right answer. Every story made them look successful. Every decision was the correct one. Every opinion was presented as fact.

At first, that can sound impressive. Eventually, it begins to sound rehearsed.

People trust honesty more than perfection.

They trust people who are willing to say, “I made the wrong call.”

Or, “I hadn’t considered that.”

Or, “That’s a great question. Let me think about it.”

Those simple sentences communicate confidence. Only insecure people believe they must appear flawless.

Confident people understand they don’t have to win every conversation to earn respect.

There’s another mistake I see frequently.

People assume trust comes from talking more. The opposite is often true.

Some of the most trusted leaders I’ve worked with are exceptional listeners. When someone speaks, they aren’t waiting for their turn. They are genuinely trying to understand.

That changes everything.

People feel heard, valued, and respected. Those feelings become trust.

Trust is emotional before it is logical.

You can have impressive credentials, decades of experience, and remarkable technical knowledge. If people don’t feel safe communicating with you, much of that expertise remains hidden behind a wall of uncertainty.

That’s one reason communication matters so much. It isn’t just about transferring information. It’s about creating confidence in the person delivering it.

Think about someone you trust completely.

Chances are, it isn’t because they always say brilliant things. It’s because they’ve shown you, over time, that their words match their actions.

Consistency is persuasive. Reliability is persuasive. Kindness is persuasive. Clear communication is persuasive.

Trust grows quietly.

Then one day people begin recommending you for opportunities. They ask for your opinion. They include you in important conversations.

Not because you demanded their trust. Because you earned it.

For professionals who speak English as a second language, this lesson is especially encouraging.

Many believe trust depends on speaking flawless English. It doesn’t.

I’ve seen professionals with noticeable accents become the most trusted people in their organizations because they were prepared, dependable, honest, and easy to understand.

People rarely remember every word you say. They remember how dependable you were. Whether you listened. Whether you followed through. Whether they felt respected.

That’s why I believe trust is built in ordinary conversations. Not one dramatic moment. Hundreds of small ones.

Every conversation is an opportunity to strengthen your reputation. Or quietly weaken it.

The choice usually isn’t made during the biggest moments of your career. It’s made in the small moments that nobody else thinks are important.

Those moments become your reputation. And your reputation becomes your opportunities.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. Less willing to engage.

We won the argument. We lost the relationship.

For years, I thought the goal of communication was to be understood.

Today, I believe that’s only part of the story.

The real goal is to create understanding without creating resistance. They change because they feel safe enough to consider another perspective.

That’s why influence is so different from persuasion. Persuasion often focuses on proving. Influence focuses on connecting.

Think about the people who have changed your life.

Was it because they always had the smartest answer? Probably not.

It was because they listened. They respected you. They challenged your thinking without attacking your dignity. The other shuts it down.

Ironically, the strongest leaders I know aren’t obsessed with being right. They’re obsessed with getting it right.

That’s an important distinction.

When your goal is to get it right, you welcome new information. You ask better questions. You become less defensive. You collaborate instead of compete.

People trust you because your ego isn’t leading the conversation. Your curiosity is.

I’ve coached professionals who believed they had to defend every decision to appear competent.

What actually happened was the opposite.

The more they defended themselves, the less confident they appeared.

The moment they started asking thoughtful questions instead of rushing to justify their choices, people began to see them as stronger leaders.

Executive presence isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about remaining composed when you don’t.

It’s about staying open when someone disagrees with you. It’s about making other people feel respected, even when you have different opinions.

That’s where influence begins.

This matters in every part of life. At work. At home. With friends. With clients. With your children.

The conversations you remember most probably weren’t the ones where someone defeated you with a better argument. They were the ones where someone helped you see something differently. That’s influence.

If you want to become a more influential communicator, try this simple habit.

The next time you disagree with someone, resist the urge to prove your point immediately.

Instead, ask one sincere question: “What led you to that conclusion?”

Then listen. Really listen.

You may still disagree. But you’ll understand more.

And understanding creates opportunities that winning arguments never can.

For professionals who speak English as a second language, this is especially important. Many worry that admitting uncertainty or asking questions will make them appear less capable. In reality, thoughtful questions often increase credibility. They show confidence, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Those qualities are remembered far longer than perfectly chosen words.

The best communicators don’t measure success by how many arguments they win. They measure it by how many people continue wanting to have conversations with them.

Influence isn’t built by defeating people. It’s built by earning their trust.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. I don’t.

Over the years, I’ve worked with executives, engineers, physicians, entrepreneurs, and professionals from around the world. Many of them are exceptionally intelligent. They are thoughtful, accomplished, and highly capable.

Yet I often notice something surprising.

The smartest people in the room are sometimes the quickest to become defensive.

That sounds backwards. Shouldn’t intelligence make us more open to feedback? Not necessarily.

The more we identify with being competent, knowledgeable, or capable, the more uncomfortable it feels when someone questions us. Our brain doesn’t simply hear criticism. It hears a potential threat to our identity.

Communication changes the moment that happens.

Instead of listening, we begin preparing our defense. Instead of asking questions, we explain. Instead of becoming curious, we become convincing.

Most of us have done it.

Someone offers a suggestion. Before they’ve even finished speaking, we’re already explaining why we made the decision we did.

We interrupt. We justify. We over-explain. We defend our intentions instead of listening to the impact.

Ironically, this usually happens because we care.

We care about doing good work. We care about being respected. We care about being seen as intelligent.

The problem isn’t that we’re bad people.

The problem is that our brain confuses disagreement with danger.

Psychologists have long understood that people naturally protect the parts of their identity they value most. If being intelligent has become part of how you define yourself, even a simple question can feel surprisingly personal.

Imagine someone says, “I’m not sure that’s the best approach.”

There are two possible reactions.

The first is defensive: “Well, here’s why I did it.”

The second is curious: “Tell me what concerns you.”

One response protects your ego.

The other protects the conversation.

Guess which one earns more respect.

Act Like A Great Communicator is a reader-supported publication. By seconds.

Those few seconds create space between emotion and response. That tiny pause is where executive presence lives.

Calm communicators aren’t people who never feel defensive. They’re the people who notice the feeling without allowing it to control the conversation.

I’ve coached professionals who believed people were constantly judging them. Sometimes they were native English speakers. Sometimes English was their second language.

The interesting part was that language wasn’t the biggest obstacle. The real obstacle was fear. Fear of looking uninformed. Fear of making mistakes. Fear of disappointing others. Fear of losing credibility.

Fear often disguises itself as defensiveness. When we recognize that, everything changes.

We stop trying to win every conversation. We start trying to understand it.

Curiosity is one of the greatest antidotes to defensiveness.

Curiosity asks:

“What am I missing?”

“What are they seeing that I’m not?”

“Help me understand your perspective.”

Those questions don’t make you weaker. They make you wiser.

The strongest leaders I’ve worked with have one habit in common. They don’t rush to defend themselves. They gather information first.

That simple difference changes how people experience them.

They appear thoughtful instead of reactive. Confident instead of insecure. It’s about creating an environment where people can think together instead of fighting to be right.

If you find yourself becoming defensive this week, don’t criticize yourself. Just become aware. Notice the feeling. Pause. Take one slow breath. Ask one question before giving one explanation.

You may discover that your greatest communication breakthrough isn’t learning to speak better. It’s learning to protect the relationship instead of protecting your ego.

That is one of the defining habits of great communicators.

For professionals who speak English as a second language, this lesson is especially valuable. Many ESL speakers assume that every question or request for clarification is a criticism of their English. In reality, most questions are simply part of good collaboration.
