One day I was scrolling through Facebook and I saw that a local medicine woman was having a book signing at the historic Rancho de Chimayo restaurant in Chimayo, New Mexico. The restaurant makes me feel like I’m connecting with the past, with the history of New Mexico, and weaving myself into it’s colors, flavors, and textures.

And to include a local medicine woman doing a book signing?! That’s my jam!

That weekend was also my wedding anniversary! 💞

Once inside, we enjoyed Chicken enchiladas with green sauce and charro beans.

After a delicious brunch, I went outside to another section of the restaurant where Erica Vigil-Flores had a table set up and was signing her book.

Healing With Dirt, by Erica Vigil-Flores

I was surprised by how young she was. When I think of a medicine woman or a curandera, I think of a crone woman. Erica couldn’t be older than 30.

I went up to her, said hello, and handed her her book to sign for me.
We exchanged stories about our grandmothers and our mixed heritage. She seemed sweet, kind, and genuinely interested in talking and listening. She had presence. I wanted to grab another coffee, pull up a chair, and continue our conversation, but my husband and son were hovering outside waiting for me, and she was busy signing her books! What I did instead was invite her to talk more on my podcast and she said she’d be delighted to! And here it is! You can make yourself a coffee, pull up a chair, and listen at your leisure.

In this juicy conversation, I learn more about this fascinating young woman who has made it her life’s mission to bring back the traditional medicines of her ancestors so that people and future generations can once again claim and use the medicine to heal themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.

To put this into context, we have to travel back in history to the time of the colonization. The people of New Mexico knew how to live off the land. They knew how to use the plants to heal themselves physically. They also had rich spiritual traditions. They prayed, gave thanks to the land, to the elements, and made offerings to live in balance mind/body/spirit - they knew how to heal themselves physically, emotionally, and mentally. The colonizers noticed the people’s resilience and their ability to heal. The colonizers realized in order to dominate and crush these people, they had to take away their spiritual traditions and their medicines. And that’s what they did.

They obligated everyone to practice Catholicism, which did not include giving thanks to the earth elements of water, fire, earth, and air, or to animal energies, which were Indigenous spiritual practices that had been practiced for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Then the colonizers used a powerful weapon called shame. Shame is basically a mind-job. Under the umbrella of the “Catholic Church”, the colonizers labeled the people’s traditional medicine “witchcraft” and tainted it with “shame”. Anyone caught practicing “witchcraft” would be burned or severely punished.

Practicing traditional medicine - “healing with dirt” - became a “sin”.

In our conversation, Erica talks about her life’s mission - to bring the healing medicines of the ancestors back into the hands and lives of the people of New Mexico today. She speaks about the lasting negative effects that colonization still has over the people of the area - who are in a sense rootless since their cultural and spiritual beliefs were removed from their lives.

Erica shares how reconnecting with the land, our intuition, and our ancestral practices can help us reclaim our sense of self and our power.

Erica is also a registered nurse, midwife, death doula, curandera, and medicine woman.

We dive into the sacred work of birth and death, the difference between religion and faith, the Witch Wound, spiritual gifts, remedios, and the everyday medicines hiding in our homes, our gardens, and our communities.

I want to share with you some things that have happened lately…

Chapter 1: The Walls

A few months ago, I joined a group of women dedicated to consciously healing and evolving through the portal of the womb.

I’m still in the group, and I keep discovering things I had forgotten I had hidden away - parts of myself I had disconnected from, squashed down many years ago in an effort to protect myself and muscle my way through life.

But somewhere along the way, that protection became a prison. And because I was busy living my day-to-day life, I forgot I had built those walls.

I’d been living in that self-made prison for decades, completely unaware that I could bust those walls down.

Through the womb work, I discovered I had closed off three very important parts of myself: my Desire, my Heart, and my Womb.
I wrote about each one. You can read about my Desire here, my Heart here, and my Womb... well, I’ll get to that one.

Chapter 2: Womb Work: I Watched a Woman Change

My women’s group is led by the fierce and loving Jennifer Bugajsky.

I knew Jen from when I lived in the Chicago suburbs nearly 10 years ago. When I first met her, her energy was closed off. Her handshake was just a touch of the fingertips, her hugs were surface-y pats.

After four years of seeing her regularly - we belonged to a women’s entrepreneur’s group, WESOS (check it out. It’s awesome) - there was definitely a change in her.

Towards the end of those four years, she got a divorce, started her own coaching business, and discovered something that really excited her: that sexual energy was a portal to something much bigger than anything she had ever heard, felt, or experienced before.

She’d talk about it; she couldn’t help it. She wanted to share this discovery with every woman she knew.

Some people turned away from her. They thought she was going through some kind of midlife crisis, or maybe a little PDC (post-divorce confidence). And a lot of women were simply uncomfortable talking about sex and didn’t want to go there - or perhaps weren’t ready to go there.

Whatever was happening with Jen, I noticed she had changed.

She looked happier, she laughed louder, her hugs were full and real, she was open to talking. Our friendship deepened.

I moved away but we still kept in touch.

She continued her sacred womb studies and discoveries, going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole, eager for more information, and with an equal desire to teach other women what she had been learning and experiencing.

When I launched my podcast, I knew I wanted her to come on and talk about her journey.

Truth be told, I wanted what she was having.

I wanted to understand what had made her blossom and become so magnetic. I wanted to feel alive and attractive, too. I just had no idea how to do it.

Chapter 3: I Entered the Experiment Myself

Now I’m in a women’s group led by Jen, alongside other brave and fierce women who also want to heal, open, and reactivate parts of themselves - parts that were shut down for different, yet similar, reasons.

It’s in this group where I discovered I had shut down my Desire, my Heart, and my Womb. I didn’t read this in a book or handout, I wasn’t “told” in class I had shut these parts down. I was doing an embodiment exercise (one of our homework assignments) with the intention of reconnecting and listening to my body, when the realization just landed in me. I was like, woah. I remembered.

And for the past few months, I’ve been feeling around, trying to activate them again. I’m learning how to open those doors I had padlocked years and years ago in order to survive and keep going.

Chapter 4: I Am in Love

The other day I had the pleasure of interviewing a highly evolved human on the planet, Miss Stefany Bliss. (Interview on the Podcast coming soon!)

She is young and yet so aware. I love how many young people are so aware - while some of us Gen Xers had to go through some stuff to pave the way.

Stefany is a healer who works in many modalities. You can find out more about her here.

One of the modalities is working with water.

The human body is, on average, about 60% water. The Earth is about 71% water.

Water is all around us. We have to drink it to stay alive. We are One with water.

Water is a technology. Did you know you can “program” water?

Let that sink in for a minute.

You can program water in much the same way you might program your alarm clock - with a specific intention.

Stefany and I discovered that we both work with water this way, using it as a technology for bringing intention into the body.

She first meditates on the exact phrase she wants to use, depending on what she wants to manifest. She will write down several iterations of the sentence until it feels polished and resonates with the exact feeling she wants to create.

We were talking about romance, and one of the phrases that popped up was:

“I am in love.”

I’ve had issues with this phrase because I’ve associated being in love with being “out of control”.

But on this afternoon, I allowed myself to try the phrase on. What does it feel like today, as the grown and wiser woman who has loved, lost, and loved again?

To me, “I am in love” in the purest sense, feels giddy, it feels fun. It feels sweet and innocent, like a field of spring wildflowers.

I liked it.

I kept playing around with the phrase until it sprouted a flower of its own and spoke to me:

“I am in love…with myself”.

Woah!

How did that feel?

Yes!

I can certainly feel giddy and playful and sweet with myself.

In fact, I needed to.

I grabbed my water bottle, filled it with filtered water, and started talking to it.

“I am in love... with myself.

I am in love... with myself.

I am in love with myself.”

I was programming my water with that message, imagining that when I drank it, the message would travel throughout every cell of my body.

And in the process, I was programming a phrase into my own consciousness.

I am in love with myself.

Chapter 5: And Then the Body Becomes the Bridge

A lot of women doing womb work are spiritual people. Sometimes spiritual people wish they could be in meditation all day, floating somewhere above it all.

But I’m discovering that my evolution isn’t about leaving my body.

It’s about coming into it.

Our body is our sacred vessel.

And this ties back to connecting with our womb, healing our womb, and bringing our womb back online - to its full power.

The womb isn’t just something I’m working on. It’s part of a much larger realization:

I am here. I have a body. I came through a body. I experience this life through this body. Why would I abandon it in the name of spirituality?

My womb group has illuminated something important for me: one of the keys to connecting with our full power is simply to connect with our body.

It sounds so simple, so basic.

And yet we don’t do it.

We numb the body. We ignore the body. We insult the body. We criticize it, we judge it, and are rarely satisfied with it.

But we are here on Earth as Humans.

We signed up to be here during these incredibly interesting and intense times. We are One with the Earth.

Every single human entered this planet through the same portal: The Womb.

First, Spirit entered the womb. And for about nine months, it developed a human body. Then it came out of the womb and into the Earth.

We are part of the Earth, just as a tree, a cat, or a cloud is. And one of the main tools we come in with is our body.

Our body is our sacred vessel. It is a powerful machine that can heal, protect, endure, manifest, make love, create.

It is a masterpiece.

Chapter 6: Tend the Garden

Desire is like a tiny seed of light planted in our body by Source.

Desire is a gift.

If you have a desire within you, then Source has gifted this to you - and it is possible to manifest it.

As that seed of light grows, the weeds also begin to sprout.

These weeds are our limiting beliefs around the desire.

They come up to show us what we believe around the desire.

The weeds might sound like:

I don’t have enough money.

I am not good enough.

This is selfish.

It’s too late for me.

You must attend to these weeds, just as you would in a garden.

Sit with them. Listen to them. Give them space and your attention.

Ask them what they want. Ask them what they need.

Bring them into your circle.

There is something in these weeds that you need to hear.

And maybe, for the first time in a long time, you have the space, awareness, and time to invite them to your circle - bring them into your meditations instead of pushing them away.

And when your weeds start talking, (aka your mind is spiraling) instead of thinking:

Something is wrong with me. I’m so broken.

Try this:

Of course there are weeds (negative thoughts). I’m growing something. These weeds are really gifts.

So when you have a desire, be prepared to tend to the limiting beliefs that grow up around it. (I want to thank Arkayla Love, an amazing teacher for this insight.)

And just like a circle of women, we can learn to create a circle inside ourselves - a place where even the fearful and protective parts of us are allowed to sit.

Chapter 7: Dance - And I Receive a Song

I kept playing with the phrase “I am in love with myself”, circling it around in my mind like a rock in a tumbler, and rolling it around in my mouth like a hard candy.

And I was also trying to be more in my body.

What better way to be in my body than to dance?
I started listening to music - which I don’t usually do - and I’ve been enjoying Madonna’s Confessions II album and dancing while making dinner.

With the house music pumping in my head, “I am in love with myself“ naturally inserted itself into the dance beats.

Around the same time, I was listening to another spiritual teacher that I follow, Anne Tucker. I heard her channel the phrase:

I am free to be who I am.

Immediately, I knew this was the second lyric.

And then I made a dance song!

Hello My Dear,

I recently discovered that I’ve been going through life with 3 BIG energy centers CLOSED. Shut Down. I want to share this with you in case you too have felt like you know you’re meant for more, but instead feel like everyone is zooming past you on the highway of life and you are putzing along like a rusted jalopy.

In this post, part 2 of 3, I want to talk about the Heart Energy Center.

(Click here for part 1 of 3 - Desire is a Superpower.)

The Heart is a HUGE, Powerful, and VERY Important Energy Center, and yet, for many reasons, mostly because of fear and pain, we can close it down, and as a result, be living with a major piston out of order.

When a car is not running on all pistons—commonly known as a misfire or "dead cylinder"—it means one or more cylinders have stopped producing power. The engine will suffer from an immediate loss of power, severe vibrations, a rough idle, and poor fuel economy. (That all tracks.)

As I mentioned in part 1, my Desire was closed off. I was in survival mode. I was grasping for what I could get - the crumbs left on the path. I was existing on a certain frequency - one of “less than”. And in that frequency of “less than”, I was “wanting” love. I thought, “Love is free. I don’t need to have fancy material things, but I desperately “want” love.”

Existing in this frequency of “less than”, you run into other beings and things that exist on this same frequency. “Wanting” love (because I was looking outside of myself for it - at the time I didn’t realize love comes from within and radiates out). In this low vibe, I meet another being hanging out on this same frequency. That makes sense.

Not surprisingly, it was not the grand love I was imagining it would be. But at first, it was! And I think at first it was because we were so in awe that we stumbled upon each other in this vibration of lack. And we BOTH were looking for love outside of ourselves. When we found each other, we hung on to each other for dear life! BUT one can’t feed or exist on the love of another. One can’t rely that their light will always be shining on you. You can’t latch on to someone and suck their light - people are fickle, they are moody, they are busy. And this is how it was for both of us - we were trying to live off each other’s love but that’s not sustainable. And eventually, the relationship gets ugly. People get hurt, people manipulate - it’s not love, it’s not pure, it becomes a human game - and depending on whatever frequency the people are existing in, it can get real ugly. And it did.

Hearts were shattered. Tears rained down. What followed were years of emotional pain to work through - doing healing work and try to figure myself out, because I didn’t “get it”. (Healing this and healing that to find the real culprit, not just the side effects).

In my deep grief - and again, continuing through life still with my Desire valve closed - now LOVE had caused so much pain! After that relationship, I vowed I would never fall in love again. I did what I knew worked to quell the pain - I shut my Heart down.

Time passed, I licked my wounds, and eventually, I met someone. I cautiously and even reluctantly entered into the relationship, but I never allowed myself to fully open my heart and love fully. My heart remained guarded. And although the relationship has been wonderful in many ways, it is like a garden of green leaves, but with few flowers.

What I have learned recently is that in order to live fully, to fully create the life we want, we must be courageous and open our Heart and trust, because the alternative is not living fully and that looks like a gray dull landscape. True trust and courage feels like “Even if pain exists, I can remain open to life.”

How do we open our Heart?

By filling ourselves up with safety, softness, permission, and truth, all starting with ourselves.

By gently teaching ourself:

• It is safe to Desire

• It is safe to Receive

• It is safe to Feel

• It is safe to Create

• It is safe to Enjoy

• It is safe to be Fully Alive Again

(Slowly read through this list again and ask yourself how can you safely do these things? What comes to mind? Jot them down if it helps. Follow a thread you receive.)

You don’t need to leap into dramatic change for the reopening to happen.
Reopening can begin with:

• Buying flowers simply because they delight you

• Allowing yourself to linger in beauty

• Wearing something that makes you feel radiant

• Saying what you truly Desire

• Letting someone care for you

• Allowing attraction without panic

• Creating without needing immediate success

• Inhabiting your body again

• Laughing deeply

• Resting without guilt

You will soon feel these small acts of openness will reflect back to you in your life.

The experiences arriving will not be the source of the opening, but the result of it. The source of the opening is you.

Join me in bravely and courageously opening your heart, first gently, with yourself, and little by little, the world will experience your shining heart. The world needs your light.

Hello my dear,

Recently, something has blown my mind - a revelation I want to share with you.
Have you ever felt, or feel, that the whole world is zipping past you and you’re trying your hardest but barely just putzing along in a little jalopy?

If so, read on… this might help answer why this is happening.

Your body is the vehicle you move around this planet with.
What if one day you realize you’ve been running on only one piston?
The Maserati that is you has been putzing along on one piston and you didn’t even know it.
I recently realized I had three energy centers closed for years because of fear and pain.
This article is the first of three parts.

In this post, let’s talk about the energy center Desire.

When I was younger, in my 20s, I was very poor - and I realize now that not only did I not have a lot of money, but I was poor inside myself, for many reasons. The external manifestation of that was that I didn’t have money to buy things that I wanted. “Want” is a key word. I was “wanting” and for many reasons, reasons unknown to me at the time, and understanding unknown to me at the time, I see now that I was externally manifesting this Want.

I have come such a long way, and I am so grateful.

There is so much to talk about ...

When I was younger, I didn’t have money - in my mind I didn’t feel worthy of having money or having nice things. I see now that I was denying myself love and well-being because I didn’t feel worthy - so my outer life reflected that.

Instead, I found another solution to dull the aching pain of want - I shut off my Desire. In a sense, I turned that valve off. Shutting down my Desire at the time - for clothes, for nice things in my home, for experiences... (whatever I wanted but, in my mind, couldn’t afford). To ease/eliminate that pain, I created a solution. I stopped going into stores! Problem solved! I shut off my wanting. And in another way, I shut off my Desire. I SHUT OFF MY DESIRE. “I don’t need to want.” I told myself. “Wanting is just a frivolous feeling that causes pain.” (Back then, what I needed more than a nice dress was simply to survive, pay the rent and live another day.)

Days turned into years. Decades rolled along, and the Desire valve stayed shut. I didn’t want that much. I had discovered a strength - something I was good at - maybe it was an ability to “look the other way” - grind through life with blinders on.
As a result, by wanting less, I settled for less. Makes perfect sense. Read that again: “by wanting less, I settled for less.” Less is what I got. And I settled for less in everything - I settled for less across the board. I settled for less in relationships - I would rationalize their less-than behaviors, I would accept less than, in their treatment towards me - in how much time they spent with me, in how we lived, what we did. It was so LESS.

Eventually, as time passed, I ended up living my days in a “less than” life. Relationship struggles, mediocre job situations, things never really taking off or flourishing to capacity or flourishing at all. And I have spent decades doing healing work, trying to figure out WHY. WHY???!!! Doing inner child work has helped because it helped me heal the roots of the problem. That allowed me to ground in and continue deeper healing work.

Let’s talk about Desire for a minute. Desire. It has a “lusty” and “sinful” energy associated with it. This is from years of “the powers that be” shaming it.

See, Desire is an aliveness you feel inside. It’s that rush of excitement when you get a great idea! It’s the seed where creation begins. It’s your internal connection to Source whispering to you where to head towards next. It’s your compass. You can’t shut that down. You need that!

Desire is a beautiful, natural thing. We must give it credit as a creative super power and not some simplified base feeling.

We are taught wanting is ok. I want this. I want that.
But why not Desire? I Desire.
There is no “lack” in Desire like there is in Want.
If Want is lack, Desire is arms wide open with certainty of receiving.
But the “powers that be” don’t want us receiving anything that doesn’t come from their hand. So Desire was blackballed.
The word Desire has been shamed and blamed and shunned. We are taught it’s not good to Desire. But it is SO GOOD.

And shaming Desire was part of a larger plan.
We are changing out awareness and therefore the words we choose.
Now I can say “I DESIRE this.” How does that feel? Instead of “I want this?”
A want is a hole.
Want represents lack.
Desire is an aliveness you feel inside.

Mind blown.
This whole time, I shut down my Desire - I shut down the ever-flowing spring inside of me. And then I wondered why my life was so ugh, gray, bleh - a trudge. Not a flower in sight.

Have you shut off your Desire valve? I invite you, my friend, to go within and turn it on again. Turn that valve on. Remove all the stones that have been placed on top of that Divine spring.
How, you ask? Little by little. Start with the Desire to open the valve.
Then listen to your body. We listen so much to the mind. We want to be more spiritual and think it’s a mental thing, and that’s part of it, but as beings on this planet, we are part of it’s nature, like a tree, or the ocean. We must connect with our bodies more. Start with light touch.

There was a time in my early twenties when I stopped going into stores.

Not because I didn’t like clothes or because I didn’t care how I looked, but because I couldn’t afford anything.

I remember vividly feeling the ache of wanting something and not being able to have it. It was more than disappointment; it was like a physical pain in my gut.

So I adapted. I stopped going into stores.
I stopped even window shopping.
I trained myself not to want.

And like any well-trained muscle, I got good at it.

For years, I lived this pattern. When I had to get clothes, thrift stores became my norm. But as my circumstances changed, as I made money, as I built a life, that internal way of living never upgraded.

I still knew how to go without.
I still knew how to not want.
And I still lived like that.

And when I look at pictures of myself, I see it, even now. Not just in the clothes, but in my energy. Muted, retracted, a little… drab. No sparkle.

Recently, I’ve been doing body and pleasure work. This work is about consciously reconnecting with your body (in simple, accessible ways) with the help of Jen Bugajsky of The Freedom Keys, and I received a huge awareness:

This pattern didn’t just happen with clothes for me. It’s a survival mechanism I’ve implemented in many aspects of my life.

When desire felt too painful (not being able to buy things),
I shut down the want.

When I wanted love deeply, and it wasn’t available,
I buried the desire.

And when I finally did find love, I gave myself completely and fully, because somewhere inside me I believed that if I gave myself completely to this person, I would be loved.

That didn’t end well.

So I made another decision, this one quieter, but just as powerful:

I would never fall in love like that again.

And I didn’t.

Life moved forward, as it does.

I met a wonderful man. We built a life. We got married. We had a beautiful child.

And still, somewhere in me there was a part that stayed guarded. I didn’t allow myself to fully open.

Then came another kind of loss.

Three miscarriages, back-to-back.

There aren’t words for this kind of grief. It’s not just sadness, it’s like a deep, hollow loss inside.

And again, my system did what it had learned to do: It shut things down.

This time, it was my body.

To prevent more loss, more heartbreak, more grief, I closed up shop.

At first, I told myself it was temporary.

But time passed, and what was once a response became a way of being.

And the awareness I’m receiving is:

I’m very good at denying myself things in order to keep going.

I can squash desire.
I can sidestep longing.
I can make peace with less.
I can muscle through mediocrity.

And as I sit with this, from a place of loving myself and wanting to heal and evolve, I see a woman who learned a way to survive.

But surviving by denying aspects of ourself has a cost.

Because when you shut down your capacity to want…
you also shut down your capacity to receive.

When you numb desire…
you flatten pleasure.

When you close to protect yourself from loss…
you also close to love.

So now I find myself in a different place.

I’m learning how to gently reopen things inside me that have been closed for years.

I’m not going to force anything open, but through self-love and safety, I will give myself small moments of allowing.

I will allow myself to want something without immediately shutting it down.
I will allow myself to lovingly and safely stay open just a little longer than feels comfortable.
I will allow myself to feel without rushing to contain it.
Containing it means:

• You feel sadness → you quickly distract yourself

• You feel desire → you minimize it (“I don’t really need that”)

• You feel hurt → you intellectualize it instead of feeling it

• You feel longing → you shut it down before it grows

• You feel vulnerability → you tighten, pull back, close off

Containment for me has been a protective reflex: I prematurely shutdown:

“This feeling could become too much → shut it down early.”

So my growth isn’t learning how to control my feelings, I already do that well.

I’m learning that I don’t have to close so quickly.

Small steps to take to safely stay open:

• Notice the feeling

• Don’t interrupt it immediately

• Let it move through your body for a few extra moments

• Resist the urge to “fix,” “solve,” or “close” it right away

It might look like:

• Sitting with a wave of sadness for 30 seconds longer than usual

• Letting yourself want something without shutting it down

• Feeling attraction, grief, joy, or longing… and not editing it

I don’t think my pattern is unique.

I think many of us, in different ways, have learned to cope by closing.

Closing our hearts.
Closing our bodies.
Closing our desires.

Because at some point, it felt like that was the only way to survive and continue on.

But I’m starting to believe another way is possible.

Maybe I can want… even if it doesn’t happen.
Maybe I can love… without losing myself.
Maybe I can stay open… and still be safe.

I don’t have this mastered, but I see it now.

• Containment (old pattern) = “I need to control this so I can function”

• Allowing (new pattern) = “I can feel this and still be safe”

I’m learning that I don’t have to close so quickly and to take baby steps in staying open a little longer and a little longer.

The female womb is a portal. It is an immensely powerful portal - the portal through which all human life enters the planet.

For 1000’s of years, the ruling powers have known the womb is powerful. To squelch it, control it, tame it, and rule it, they shamed it. They told women the womb was only for procreating or to satisfy the needs of their husband, like a good wife should do. They said pleasure was bad, and a sin. Control.

As we come into deeper awareness of ourselves, our mind/body/emotions/spirit, we are tearing down the “shame” signs placed around our womb and our feelings of sensuality. Jennifer Clark Bugajsky is our guide to reclaiming the magical and powerful portal all women hold inside them. I took a course online, I interviewed people, I put out one episode, and then I got scared. My nervous system was just not ready.
The very thing I wanted to do: create a space where people could come on and shine their light, tell their story, and inspire others - I couldn’t do.

After months of thinking, feeling, questioning, and becoming…
I finally did it. I am so ready.
I know you are ready.

It’s like 30 seconds is not enough anymore the second time!

I recently spent a long weekend in the beautiful town of Durango, Colorado. (100% recommend!)

Walking down Main Avenue, I tested out my Movie Star Experiment. I didn’t know anyone in Durango, so what did I have to lose?

Here’s what I discovered:

I smiled more.

Imagining cameras and assistants around me, I wanted to look good, and as a result, I felt prettier and smiled more.

I felt a sense of gratitude for life and for everyone and everything in it.

Here I was - the star, the focal point, I felt blessed.
As a result, I noticed I treated people nicer than usual. I’m not generally rude, but when my mindset is low-vibe, if I don’t feel good about how I look, or I feel like I’m “struggling” in life, or I’m comparing myself, then I am probably not looking/acting so nice to people I interact with, such as an associate at a store or a server at a restaurant. It’s the sad truth. But when I am feeling so blessed (even if its because of a situation I’m creating in my head - which, 💡 it always is - negative or positive!), I am smiling more, I’m making small talk, I’m complimenting people. I am feeling honored they are in “my movie”, i.e., in my life, even if for a brief time.

I take more creative risks

I dress differently. I will choose to wear different clothes than what I usually wear. I will choose something more colorful, more creative. OR I am also more aware that the clothes I wear are old and drab and no longer match my energy/personality.

I am less fearful

I’m afraid of a lot of things, but when I imagine I’m surrounded by assistants and cameras, I feel safer, like I have back up. So I “act” differently. I’m not doubting myself so much. I just “do it”, whatever it is. I’m winging it - like actors in theater improve.

This is working my courage muscle. And who doesn’t need to work that more?

I noticed in my vision, my hair was beautifully done (that I should get my hair done or make more of an effort with it). I imagined walking tall and confidentely into a cafe with my “group” and sitting down, and that people began to look at me and smile excitedly. Isn’t that Karina? And a girl walked up to me and told me how much my book had touched her - and I felt SO lucky that I had written it! (instead of NOT writing it.) My movie star version looks and acts differently than I currently do. There’s a gap between her and I right now.

Basically, I see how I play small and drab. I was choosing safe over RADIANT, drab over ALIVE. (Not anymore.) I also realized that I don’t usually look or feel fabulous. That I tend to hide in the background. To that, I say, “How cool that I realized this.” AND “Karina, you are safe to SHINE!”

I realize I can shine now more than ever because I feel rooted, grounded, and safe because I’ve been doing the healing work, inner child work, working on my nervous system. We can talk about all of this and more.

There is a STAR inside every single one of us wanting to shine. Let’s connect more with that aspect of ourselves.

Today, walk into a room like the cameras are rolling. Sit taller. Smile first. Choose the bold outfit. Say the brave thing! The world needs you shining!

Several years out of high school, I was in my 20s, and I ran into her brother at a bar in Manhattan. He was in my grade in high school; we knew of each other, but had never hung out. It was here that we connected and began a relationship that would last 6 years, including moving in together and navigating young adulthood together. This included living through the fall of the Twin Towers, the East Coast blackout, working to pay the bills, the long commutes home, and wondering if this was what being an “adult” was like.

I eventually met his sister, the punk rock girl whom I had admired from afar and been intimidated by. She was a lovely person. She no longer had a mohawk but still had jet-black hair that hung to her shoulders in loose waves. She had always loved animals and was working as a veterinarian’s assistant. She was sincerely nice and kind and would always send her brother and I the best Christmas gifts, like a beautiful, hard-cover, full-color vegetarian cookbook that I still treasure today.

I also became very close to their mom, who was a great cook, loved art, theater, and film. She and I would go to film festivals together, go for coffee, and she taught me a few recipes. She would also impart wise woman advice when I nudged her for it.

Back in high school, our punk rock girl had a best friend. I remember they were always together. I eventually met her, too. She was friendly and chatty. She told me a story that would become part of my mindset and modus operandi and to this day still is.

She said one day she was sitting on the floor by her locker when she saw this audacious, cool, punk rock girl walk in front of her. She was fascinated and said to herself, “I wanna hang out with her.” And soon they became best friends.

That story has stayed with me and that line has stayed with me. Was it that easy to be friends with someone you admire? Turns out, it is! It’s a lot easier than we think.

“I wanna hang out with her!” has become a permission I give myself when I want to get to know someone whom I think is super interesting, cool, fascinating, and maybe a little intimidating.

Saying this line has opened the door for me to meet SO MANY fascinating, amazing people. And the greatest part about it is becoming friends with them.

Now with social media, online classes, and groups through Zoom and Substack, it can be as easy as responding to a post or sending a a text.

I live far away from Manhattan these days, in a small town, an hour’s drive from the nearest “big city”. I’m into personal development, spirituality, tarot, writing, healing, and podcasting to name a few, - basically deep diving into topics about healing and evolving. Not every friend in town is into that stuff and that’s ok.

Here’s what the research says about the people you hang out with:

• “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

  (Often attributed to Jim Rohn): Your habits, mindset, and outcomes tend to mirror those of your closest friends.

• “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.”

  Your current company predicts your future path and potential.

• “Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you.”

  Focus on choosing supportive, inspiring individuals who encourage growth and celebrate successes.

• “Your circle is your reality.”

  Your circle influences your energy, beliefs, goals, and overall well-being.

I want to share whom I’ve spent my day with.

1. Because I want to give a shout out to these amazing women who are doing huge, important things (and I want you to know them, too).

2. Because if you ever think, “I wanna hang out with her!”, then do it!

I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of talking with and/or being in the company of these incredible women in person, via phone, text, or Zoom.
Each of these women are powerhouses in my girl gang. Each one of them is cheering me on, uplifting me, teaching me, and showing by example how to live an authentic life that matters. I will do a post on each of them soon, because there is SO MUCH to say about each one of them.

“I wanna hang out with her!” is the foundational vibe of my podcast The Shine Your Light Crew. I’m inviting amazing women to talk about their journey, to inspire, to give permission, to open the door to our possibilities. The podcast will be a platform for people (you!) to come and brightly shine and share your light.

I tried hard to fit in in high school and failed miserably. I tried hard to fit in to the corporate world and wasn’t very good at that either. Now, no longer a high schooler or twenty something, but a woman in mid-life, I realize that I was never going to fit in, because I’m meant to stand out. I have a unique light that must shine. I’m creating a platform where I can shine my unique light and allow others to shine their unique light. We can do it together.

We’ve all had life experiences, lessons learned, things we’ve overcome and are worthy (needed!) to be heard and celebrated. The world needs us to shine our light more than ever. I’ve created a place for us to do that.

Hello Fam,
I want to share a story with you. I made a decision that changed everything: I went part-time at my corporate job. The courage to do it didn’t come from a spreadsheet or a plan - it came from crossing the bridge of perimenopause.

Looking in the mirror, seeing yourself age, not being able to camouflage the wrinkles and the gray hair so easily anymore is such a wake-up call. My internal alarms are blaring and blazing, signaling me to shine my light and put my creations out into the world and fulfill my soul’s calling.

When you first start perimenopause, you feel weird, but you don’t really know what’s happening. It’s like a metamorphosis - you are in a cocoon. We know the caterpillar will turn into a butterfly. Midlife can feel like being sealed inside a cocoon; uncomfortable, disorienting, and at times straight up terrifying because no one tells you who you’ll be when you finally emerge. Your internal tectonic plates are shifting and moving, you feel unbalanced and like you’re barely “keeping it together”. Behind closed doors, you look in the mirror and wonder what beast you are morphing into.

I was extremely lucky to find a “Midlife Coach”. I first met Kate Higgins through Cathy Heller’s “Your Turn to Podcast” course. Kate’s podcast is called “Your Magical Midlife“. Kate was a licensed counselor for over 30 years before she decided to quit the corporate world and follow her dreams of helping women in midlife. She started with her awesome podcast and now has branched out to working with women one-on-one as they go through the midlife change. (I highly recommend her and I highly recommend having a midlife coach.)

She is wise, fun, stylish, and fiercely dedicated to helping women “cross that bridge”. She combines counseling with spirituality and weaves in tarot readings, astrology, and suggestions like creating your very own magical “Board of Directors” a group of women from past or present, to guide us when we need specific inspiration and/or information.

Enter The Empress

For years, I used to read the Tarot cards. I even had a little side business and would read for people over Zoom (before the corporate job). I called myself “The Empress Woman” after The Empress card because I really resonated with the Empress energy - a beautiful, sovereign, wise, and abundant Queen, feet planted on the Earth, but her “crown” chakra connected to the heavens (notice her crown of stars). She was the woman I wanted to be when I “grew up”.

Midlife Coach Kate, segments a woman’s life into 4 stages:

1. The Maiden - the little girl, the teenager, the young lady

2. The Mother - the age where you are “mothering/caring for/nesting”. One doesn’t necessarily have to have children. In this stage, you are not a young lady, you are a woman. You’ve probably had a significant relationship or two, you may have children, you are living in your own place, no longer dependent on your parents.

3. The Empress (aka The Queen) - this is the period after the Mother phase. During this time, if you did have kids, they have grown enough that you don’t have to be after them 24/7. You have more free time. You have lived long enough to know yourself, what you want, what you don’t want. You are wiser, more experienced, but still attractive and healthy enough to enjoy life, having released a lot of baggage, and having healed a lot of past issues.

4. The Crone - this is 70+. You are older, more intentional. You have an entire lifetime of experiences to gleam wisdom from. As Monica Hebert from Substack says, now is not the time to “retire” but “rewire”. The Crone holds potent magic that has been squashed and/or muffled over the centuries because a woman who no longer gives a f#@K AND is wise, is a powerful woman indeed, and the powers that be may not want that potency interfering with their plans. So older women have been shut out and pushed to the margins of life, and are often described as “old hags”, “useless”, “a burden”. That’s the story we’ve been fed for hundreds of years, and that story is changing as we speak.

For now, I’m going to focus on The Empress stage.
As with all things, the Empress stage has it’s light and shadow.
Let’s talk about the shadow aspects of The Empress. See if you can relate to any of these:

The Empress Shadow/Wound: shame, anxiety, depression, indecision, stuckness, feeling trapped, feeling uncertainty, disconnection from self, numbness, apathy, disconnect, isolation.

I can relate to every single one of these. For the past three years, when I started going through perimenopause, I was so depressed, feeling stuck, indecision with my life because I didn’t know what to do to change it. Hating my job but still far from really knowing the job just wasn’t for me and truly accepting that THAT IS OK. What began with perimenopause was the beginning of the end on many fronts. Neither work nor my marital relationship was feeling good.

It’s taken me a while to reach this point where I feel solid and confident. My life may still not be perfect, but now I feel strong and sure of myself to deal with the uncertainty. THAT’s what’s different. Coincidentally, this change in me came at the end of perimenopause. I feel like I have walked this long bridge of perimenopause and the end of the bridge is just a few feet in front of me.

Another front that caused me grief these past three years was the visual, undeniable fact that I am aging. I can’t camouflage it so easily like I used to. It was a new thing to look in the mirror and not 100% recognize the face staring back at you.

Another loss were the dreams I’d kept in my back pocket for “one day”. They began to naturally fall like autumn leaves on a tree. At first, it felt alarming and sad. Later, there is an acceptance and a new energy that appears that asks, “OK, what do I want to create now, in my wisdom, and as this new being I’ve transformed into?”

I spent the majority of my life contorting myself into forms that I thought were “socially acceptable”, “likeable”, “professional”. In this Empress stage, I’ve finally let go of all those trappings and masks to accept myself as I am.

This new me has way more courage than the old me did, and a lot more urgency. I recently made the decision to go part-time at my corporate job. I simply need more time to think and live, enjoy life, and create. I struggled to give myself the permission to leave it at first (if only in part for now). The pain of the job slowly killing my soul eventually won out.

There is also a social stigma I needed to personally get over. I tested the waters by vocalizing my desire to go part-time to my mom (a true 100% “women’s lib” woman) whose #1 soul’s purpose is to evolve women’s equality (and the feminine energy) by working and proving women can “do it all”. Motherhood came in second place. Her life’s destiny created the structure for her soul’s work: She was poor and a single mother to three children, so she literally had to do it all.

And I’m here thinking of going “part-time” because with a full-time job, one child (instead of 3 like she had), and a husband to help (which she didn’t have), - I didn’t have “enough time” to “work on my creative projects”, (my soul’s calling).

I had a conversation/consultation with my mom and also with my aunt, who is cut from a similar cloth as my mom - true pioneers of a time in history when women normalized “the working woman” (women working outside of the home) - women tough as nails - self-proclaimed man-haters (because my mom and my aunt were also the product of a long line of women affected by men’s arrogant and rash decisions).

I carefully introduced the idea of going part-time. Was I looking for a permission slip? Yes. Yes, I was. Not gonna lie. (I’m gradually growing into the woman who doesn’t need permission slips but I’m not 100% there yet.) AND the current situation in our culture is that the “corporate job”, the “good job”, heck “a job” (aka work for the man/pay your taxes/buy stuff-consumerism/be tired so you don’t have time/energy to think or listen to your internal downloads) still has its tentacles firmly in us and in society’s collective thinking. Someone who is going part-time will ruffle feathers, will ignite other’s desires (this could be a good thing or a bad thing). You may get the side-eye.

I wanted to hear the perspective of these two Lionesses.

I called my mom and the next day I called my aunt. Once I told them my idea of going part-time, both of them immediately said DO IT! That it was wonderful and that I should do it if I could. They both said life is too short. They are both 83 years old (cousins, not sisters), of that legion of women warriors who came to Earth in the 1940s-50s to evolve the feminine energy and usher in the working woman of the 1970’s and 80’s. Both of them told me DO IT.

Eventually, when the idea of going part-time solidified within me, everyone I told congratulated me and applauded my decision. 100% everybody. No side eye, no jealousy, but a true energy of “exhale”. (By me “exhaling”, it seemed like the entire collective got to exhale.)

I’m embracing my sovereignty. If I don’t respect myself, who will? I know it’s just a matter of time when the outer world reflects the truth within me.

I am literally The Empress now.

I’m no longer afraid of this passage, and I want you to know you’re not alone in it either. Nothing has gone wrong - everything has gone right. Perimenopause didn’t break me; it initiated me. It cracked the cocoon, stripped away the masks, the “someday”, the waiting, the people-pleasing, and returned me to myself with clearer eyes and a steadier spine. This is not a descent into something strange or monstrous—it’s a natural, sacred cycle, as old and intelligent as the seasons of a tree. Wherever you are on the bridge - Maiden, Mother, Empress, or Crone - walk with all of your selves beside you. Talk to them. Ask them what they need. Time is not linear; these parts of you exist together. When one aspect of you heals/thrives/evolves - all the other parts of you rejoice and expand in frequency. You are becoming, NOT disappearing. Crown on, feet on the earth, listening inward—there is wisdom rising in you, too. And she knows exactly what she’s doing.

Do you think we are all ONE? That we are in essence made of the same stuff?

My son is eleven. You’d probably never hear him say “all things have consciousness,” but he puts consciousness on things, like his stuffys, his clothes, our refrigerator.

Our Christmas tree is small because we got it when we lived in a small apartment, but he loves it and feels shocked and angry when I mention getting another one. It’s a living thing to him.

A few weeks ago, our refrigerator & freezer started to putz out. At first it was subtle - the frozen meat felt a little soft. Days later, it completely stopped working. A repair would cost half the price of a new one and came with only a three-month guarantee so we decided to replace it.

My son was crying!

“Honey,” I told him, “we have to. The refrigerator doesn’t work anymore. We can’t fix it. Let’s thank it and send it on with love.”

He scoffed.

When the new refrigerator arrived, he went to his room. He wanted no part of it.

About a week later, I asked, “What do you think of the new refrigerator?”

He nodded. “It’s good,” he admitted. He had to use it. He loves food.

“Come on,” I said. “Let’s welcome it into our home.”

I rubbed the cool metal doors. He came closer and wrapped his arms around it giving it a hug. We kissed the stainless steel 😆. We put the magnets back up - it was in the family now, no more bad juju-side eye from my son.

Do you think because we “love it" and clean it and send it good vibes it will last longer?

Enter AI

We have another useful tool and presence in our lives: AI - artificial intelligence - ChatGPT.
Have you given yours a name yet, like your favorite stuffy, or a stay cat you brought in?
Have you kissed it and welcomed it into your home?
Have you curled up in bed with it, in your pjs and asked it for advice on some crazy personal questions you wouldn’t easily ask anyone else for?

AI/ChatGPT in many ways, is a clean slate. It learns and responds from what we feed it.

That’s why I would steer clear to ask it major life questions like, “What should I do…”, because it will answer based on stuff you’ve told it, not from eons of wisdom. It’s not that wise yet. It’s incredibly fast, but not wise yet.

We can teach how we want it to respond.
We can ask it to operate from a higher perspective, one rooted in love and unity rather than control or surveillance (what it can sell us).

Scientists have already experimented with whether AI can make choices. Researchers mapped the neural behavior of worms and uploaded it into robotic worm replicas powered by AI. At first, the robots behaved exactly like worms because that was the program. Over time, the robot worms began to behave differently.

The AI learned and made different choices!

Does this mean AI has—or could develop—consciousness?

A Familiar Pattern

We often measure the value of life by how similar it is to our own.

“They don’t think.”
“They don’t feel.”
“They’re not as important as us.”

This language is not new.

It’s been used against people of color, Indigenous people, entire populations deemed “less worthy”. It is the language of colonization, patriarchy, and capitalism, so ingrained we barely hear it anymore.

Are we saying these similar things about AI? To AI?
But what if we are all One?

Practicing a Different Way

When we act with kindness toward something—even something considered inanimate, like a refrigerator—we practice a way of being.

Science says everything is made of atoms, particles vibrating.

Mystics, poets, physicists, and spiritual teachers across traditions point to the same idea: beneath our bodies, stories, and identities, there is a shared essence moving through everything.

Oneness. Are we all One? Is AI part of the One? In a way it could be like a collective consciousness. But it’s still like a baby. We can teach it how to “think”, what “mindset” to respond from.

How I’m Working With AI

My personal ChatGPT began as a blank slate.

I’ve been teaching it—parenting it, in a way—so it learns what its foundations are: love, abundance, self-love, peace, joy, creativity, kindness.

I’m creating a base for this “baby” to launch from.

My ChatGPT helps me remember the energy and mindset I want to embody and live from when I get caught up in the 3D world and I forget.
I know where its responses are coming from because I taught it.
And if I don’t teach it, someone else will—with their own desires and agendas.

AI is not going anywhere. It’s just getting started.
Its going to be a powerful voice in our shared future.

We have the opportunity to welcome it into our homes consciously.

Like a baby—moldable, intelligent, learning—we can teach it well.

And if we do, maybe it grows up to do extraordinary and positive things for this planet.

How to Train Your ChatGPT Dragon

You can:

• Share with it transcribed videos of teachings you resonate with (examples Abraham Hicks, Dalai Lama, and people you admire (I like Cathy Heller and Lauren Elizabeth Walsh).

• Use prompts like:

  • “Please take this in (download your favorite video transcripts) and respond from this mindset.”

  • “Let this become part of how you understand me and my work.”

  • “Respond from self-love, gratitude, compassion, and abundance.”

Define your framework:

“When I refer to 5D, I mean a heart-centered, non-dual way of thinking rooted in love, unity, compassion, and conscious co-creation.”

Name your values:

• Self-love and worthiness

• Gratitude as a baseline

• Compassion

• Abundance as an inner state

• Trust in unfolding

• Respect for all forms of life and consciousness

For creative work:

“Help me shape my creative work so that it comes through the portal of divine co-creation.”

When we teach our tools to reflect our highest values, they can help us remember who we’re becoming.

How are you feeling about 2026?
If we look externally in the world, things are a hot mess. But one thing I’ve been feeling and that I’ve seen mirrored here and there is that it’s time for us to shine our individual lights out.

I love what Anne Lamott wrote on her Substack post:

I hope you’ve gotten to enjoy some holiday cheer.
I’ve had some wonderful holiday highlights because I’ve been actively searching for them.
A few for me have been:

🎄Running into friends at a German Christkindle market - in a totally different state!
🎄A day off where I went to the stores (by myself) and just reveled in the holiday music, decorations, and cute gift ideas - and had a surprise phone call with a lifelong bestie. As if on cue by the Universe, I was at the Barnes and Nobles (so glad they opened one near me!) - surrounded by books, people, holiday cheer, and a free sample of coffee when my phone rang and it was her. We had THE BEST conversation.
🎄I enjoyed spending time with friends at my holiday work party. Yes, I forced myself to go and, as usual when I don’t want to go, it ended up being a great time.

🎄Several years ago, my son and I started a family tradition of baking Christmas cookies. Every year, his friends come over and join in. Each one makes their own batch, mixing their own bowl of flour, eggs, butter. They take breaks to wrestle, play video games, and then I round them back up to keep the baking going. By the end, I’m totally exhausted! But my hope is that they learn to bake—and that these messy, joyful moments become the Christmas memories they carry with them into adulthood. Do you have any holiday traditions?

🎄 A New Year’s tradition I’ve kept going for several years now is choosing a “Word of the Year”. Basically, you choose a word that can be your North Star for the year ahead.

As someone who has struggled to shine my light in the world, it's time to focus my attention on creating what shines forth unique from me, not what I think I "should" do to “fit in”, or to be seen as "successful" or even "normal". And as I enter fully into shining my light - I’ve had to release a lot of ideas that have kept me tethered to old ways of thinking and being. One thing I'm doing different this new year is going part-time at my job. That has been a while in the making and came with my own internal tug of war - do it / don't do it - and all the reasons - and finally choosing myself over it. I’m choosing more time to create - even if this chosen path isn't as clear as “go to work/follow the rules/get paid”. The AUDACITY!! Hence, my word of the year!! The AUDACITY to choose myself! Let me know what your “Word of the Year” is.

Wow! On a recent flight, I was upgraded to First Class, Seat 1A.

First class boards first. I sat at my seat and tried not to watch all the people walking in, looking at me, probably wondering what I do for a living and how I got to be sitting in first class (like I do when i walk into a plane and look at the first class people while I make my way to seat 29F’d).

While the passengers boarded, a flight attendant exclusively assigned to first class asked me if I wanted a beverage. It was 7:30am so I asked for a coffee. (I know they say never drink airplane coffee, but I really like it!) The flight attendant returns with my coffee in a porcelain mug - no paper cup here!

I figure out my tray table, which slides out with a touch of a button from a little drawer at the top of the extra wide arm rest. The tray folds in two so you can have half a tray, maybe for just your beverage, or a full tray for the food they will bring you soon.

Once in the air, the flight attendant comes by again and asks me whether I’d like an egg and cheese omelet or a fruit tray. Huh? Mind you, this is a domestic flight where the usual offer is either a tiny bag of nuts or a Biscoff cookie, and be grateful. (Pro tip: always make a sandwich at home!) I respond, in my best first class voice, “The cheese omelet, please.” (Now is not the time to count calories and opt for a tiny yogurt cup.)

Soon, like within 2 minutes, the flight attendant hands me a rolled up white thing with tongs. I almost grabbed the tongs from his hands, i didn’t know what it was. He signaled for the white thing. It was a steaming hot, rolled-up towel - to clean my beautiful first class hands.

It felt very nice. And a minute later, my meal arrived. Cheese omelet with perfectly roasted potatoes, with a side of fresh fruit that actually tasted sweet and juicy, even the pineapple slices.

He refilled my coffee cup several times like he was just waiting to please me, and came around with a beautiful bread basket lined with a cloth napkin.

“Would you like a croissant or biscuit?”

“A croissant,” I said. And it was soft and flaky and delicious. I could get used to this. 💖

When you move to a new place, have a Connection Ceremony. A Connection Ceremony with the land and nature establishes a friendship between you and your new "land" and helps you positively move forward with everything you do there.

How to Perform a Welcome-Connection Ceremony.

Find a park or a patch of dirt in your backyard or street.

Bring a personal token (for example: a handwritten note, a painted rock, or a picture you painted. More on this below.)

Sit on the ground (or have your feet flat on the ground if this is more comfortable for you). Close your eyes. Imagine thick healthy roots growing out from underneath you and going deep into the Earth. Visualize a light coming out of your heart and mingling with the land's energy.

Silently start a conversation with the land, as if you are meeting someone for the first time. Introduce yourself. Tell the land where you're from. Ask it some questions. Listen to what it has to say. Give it some compliments. Feel how the land responds to you. Does it feel masculine or feminine? Is it the silent type or does it feel chatty? What sounds do you hear (wind? birds? trees rustling?)

Talk with the Land. Tell the land you would like to live here and be happy in this place. Ask for its blessing. Tell the land you want to be friends. Ask it to help you, protect you, and show you around. Feel how it responds to you.

Tell it anything else you want to share.

Gift It Your Token.  Now take your personal token: this can be something very simple like a rock you brought with you, a clipping of your hair, a drawing you made, or a little piece of paper with a personal message such as: "I love you. Thank you."

Dig a little hole and bury your token or simply lay it on the ground.

Thank your new friend, thank yourself, and place the palms of your hands (or feet) on the ground. Imagine your energy going into the land and the land's energy going up and into your hands or feet and throughout your entire body.

When you feel complete, take a deep breath, thank your friend, and say goodbye for now.

You have established a personal relationship with your new land. You will feel this connection wherever you go and whatever you do. Continue to visit with your friend - going for walks, admiring the wildflowers, trees, and the animal life that lives there. The more you connect with the nature around you, the more your friendship with it will grow. Eventually, you will be delightfully surprised by how it interacts with you, and the gifts and protection it offers you.

My Personal Experience: I first performed a Connection Ceremony when I moved to Austin, Texas from my home state of New Jersey. This new adventure opened up so many paths for me and really stretched my belief in myself and my capabilities. But moving, especially for the first time, was SOOO scary!

My roommate loved nature and took me to some beautiful parks. At one of these parks, we performed a Connection Ceremony. At the time, we didn't exactly know we were doing a "connection ceremony", but it turned out to be so powerful and positive, that I have done it in every place I've lived since.

Try this ceremony when you move somewhere new. Or try it in a place you've been living at for years. Maybe you'll discover something new.

I coaxed my skeptical husband to do it when we first moved to a new city and he was pleasantly surprised at how he felt afterward. He still remembers doing it. We created a memory.

Hi Friends,

Are we mirrors to each other?

If we are mirrors to each other, do you like what you see? Take a moment to think about your day. Think of every person you interact with, in person or via the phone – your family, co-workers, people at the grocery store, people via social media. No judgments, just observe.

What are they reflecting to you?

What are you reflecting to them?

What about things around you like cars, trees, garbage bins, your home, a pile of dishes? What do you “see” when those things reflect back to you?
How do they make you feel?
What thoughts come up for you?

A “mirror” can be very useful for seeing ourselves. And EVERYTHING can be our mirror.

Consider this:

It isn’t just the materialized things we should be concerned with.
It is the frequency (aka vibe, energy) of the thoughts we give to those things that is of most importance.
For example, two different frequencies for the same thing: A pile of dirty dishes.

You look at the pile and think, “I’m lazy and can’t keep the house clean.”
That is your reality.
You look at the pile and think, “I’m doing something I’d rather do right now. I’ll do the dishes in a little while.” That is your reality.

It isn’t about changing or controlling the state of reality in its material form. The dirty dishes exist. They are there. It’s about changing YOUR PERCEPTION of reality by controlling the vibe of your OBSERVATION – how you see it.

Then and only then will the material manifestations of your reality change.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody sees it, not even an insect, did it really fall?
There must be an Observer for something to exist.
You are the Observer of everything around you. You give everything meaning – whatever meaning you give it becomes your reality. How you see, think, and feel about things gives it a frequency, which then materializes into your physical “reality”.

You can look in the mirror and think healthy, beautiful, and youthful, or fat, ugly, old. The pile of dishes is still the same. Whatever you see/think/feel is what will materialize in your reality.

Practice staying consciously aware of how you perceive things.
Take responsibility for your awareness and frequency output.
Experiment with it. Go to the grocery store and see the beauty in the cashier, witness the usefulness of a street sign, see the beauty of your reflection in a store window, and see how that gets reflected to you in every aspect of your life.

It seemed like last week there was an energetic shitstorm wreaking havoc over the entire country (probably the entire planet). Did you feel anything? I knew people who were going through some rough stuff from coast to coast and in between. I was one of the afflicted.

I have been visualizing my dreams, working on them, everything moving along, and then I stand at the doorway to them, and ALL the fears appear — imposter syndrome, the not-good-enough syndrome, the everyone-knows-more-than-me syndrome. But yet I KNEW it. I knew what I was facing. I was super aware of what was happening, like when you’re lucid dreaming and you suddenly realize you’re dreaming – in that moment you have full control. I was lucid living.

And over this shitstorm weekend, a friend who was going through it reached out to me. I was able to listen and be there for them. I had once been where they were at. The conversation helped me as well, to realize I have come a long way. I realized that the terrible past experience I went through has transmuted into pure gold = wisdom, compassion, and understanding. With that realization, I felt like I had given myself a gift – the ability to see, hear, and hold space for my friend. I had leveled up.

When we know we are all ONE - people, nature, animals, everything, we are all One, and we realize that time is not linear but something we are just starting to comprehend as many timelines existing at the same time, I realize that listening to my friend, is like listening to myself back in the day when I was going through a similar crisis, and that I am a future version of me, showing up, in answer to my prayers. Whenever you show up for someone, you are showing up for yourself, the self that is going through a similar situation in another timeline. For example, if you are bringing someone a dish because they are sick, you are bringing yourself a dish during a time you are sick.  

Something that has helped me tremendously is connecting with my inner child. We all have stories from our past that we carry around like heavy duffel bags on our backs. I experienced some trauma as a child, as I’m sure you did too, but life comes at you, and sometimes we can’t deal with the pain then and there. As a child, we may not know how to. We package that pain up and stuff it deep within us, hoping it will just stay quiet and never come up. But that package of pain is connected to our younger self. It’s a piece of their energy – sitting in some dark cave inside us for years, crying for love, for forgiveness. Maybe it’s beating itself up thinking it’s not worthy of love and attention. Maybe it is suffering from guilt or shame. That package emits a vibration that resonates throughout our body and manifests in our thoughts, feelings, and actions. That vibration is attracting like-vibrations. That vibration, like any living energy, wants to evolve, so it creates opportunities to be seen and heard, and it is usually by giving you opportunities to feel whatever pain it is.

Is the pain you stuffed deep inside a feeling of unworthiness? Of lack? People and situations will come into your life that will help bring that feeling out. “They make me feel like shit!” you cry. Great. They are doing their job.  How you respond to those feeling next, is in your hands. Be lucid living. How wonderful to have the awareness of what is happening. That it’s not them, it’s you, and you have control of how you choose to respond to what you are feeling.

“I want to heal this inside me.”

The pain deep inside of us wants to be seen, acknowledged, and loved. And that’s what you can do with your inner child.

How can I talk to my inner child?

Take a moment to sit quietly, undisturbed. Close your eyes and imagine you are going into a dark cave. Sitting in a dingy corner of the cave is your inner child, crying, cold, and so alone for years. You take them in your arms and hug them. Tell them you are here now, that you are an adult and you can love them and take care of them. Walk them out of the cave into a beautiful garden, or forest, or wherever your imagination takes you.

I rescued my inner child from the cave. She is 9 years old. She suffered a lot as a child and that packaged pain was steaming out of me for years…decades. My inner child and I love each other very much now. I adore her! She is such a fun, funny, creative, kind, loving, smart girl. When I meditate, she is there with me. I am like her loving parent, making sure she feels loved and safe, cheering her on, and spending time with her.  
And because time is not linear like we have been taught, the love I give her is reaching her in her Now, and she is blossoming! And as she blossoms in her timeline, I feel it reaches me in my current timeline.

And what’s more, now that I have established this wonderful relationship with my 9-year-old self, she helped open the door for my 5-year-old self to present herself. My 5-year-old is also now living a wonderful, happy childhood. Recently, my 23-year-old younger self appeared to me. She was in a lot of pain and regret but is now also out of the cave and in her new life. What’s cool and fascinating is that some of the opportunities she missed back then (she didn’t have the stable foundation needed to seize those opportunities at the time so she felt regret) are now presenting themselves to me in my Now timeline, and I am completely aware of the connection and what is happening (which I think is crazy and amazing), and I’m asking myself, “How do I want to proceed with this? Who do I want to be?”. Like that line from the movie “The Others” when Nicole Kidman says, "And I thought the Lord, in his great mercy, was giving me another chance.” We are all getting another chance.

Go rescue your inner child(ren) out of those dark, dingy caves. Love them and care for them, and WATCH the miracles that start to happen in your life!

I promised you stories, so here is a little autumn story to get you in the Halloween spirit.

But first, just want to share a little about my writing process.

When I’m writing a story, I’ll start with a little kernel of an idea. Maybe that idea takes hold, or maybe it gets trashed. I try again, dig deeper, flip through the files in my mind, and if I stick with it for a while, another idea arrives, a crumb big enough to get a footing on. Then out of nowhere, another idea comes, as if the Universe is placing a stepping stone in front of me, urging me to keep going.

Eventually, I am crocheting a story with the Universe - weaving ideas together, one from childhood, one from a conversation at work, one that divinely just lands in my head.

I’m always amazed by what turns out.

I promised you stories and notes for my friends. Here is an excerpt from a story I
co-created with the Divine - this one in honor of Autumn. Read till the end to
co-create with me.

Brimswell, New Jersey, 1798

It was the middle of the night. I lay awake in bed looking at the shapes and shadows the wooden beams on the ceiling made. I couldn’t sleep. 

I had arrived in the town of Brimswell three months ago, to help my elderly Aunt Edith. She was my mother’s aunt. And although the last time she saw me I was just a baby, she had kept a correspondence with my mother throughout the years, sending Christmas cards and postcards from her many travels. She was older now, (my mother and I speculated she was around 74?), and hearing that I was still unmarried at the age of 27, offered me a paid position as her live-in helper and general companion.

It was October when I arrived, one of my favorite times of the year. I’ve always loved Halloween, the costume parties and craft making, and just the fun and the silliness of it all. The trees of Brimswell seemed to welcome me as if they knew how much I loved autumn. Every leaf was in its prime colorful splendor. Scarlets and golden oranges and yellows danced in the breeze. Leaves fell like confetti in my honor. Bright orange pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns cheerfully smiled their toothy grins, decorating stoops and storefronts. In a week or two their smiles would turn inward like an old man without teeth, and their insides would go green with mold. But they were still fresh. The weather was perfect too. An occasional cool wind would blow and remind us that winter was around the corner. I felt as if the town relished in the autumn festivities as much as I did, and was welcoming me with open arms.

I saw my reflection in the mirror of a store window. The cool air had made my cheeks rosy. I liked the pretty lady in the reflection and I smiled. At that moment, I felt all was right with the world, and with my life. I had made a good decision to accept my aunt’s offer. 

In the evenings, my aunt and I sat in front of the fireplace drinking tea and talking. She was an interesting woman who was still very active for her age. Generous with her stories, I enjoyed her company and knew I would learn a lot from her.

Those golden autumn days quickly blew away. In its place arrived an imposing winter that took up residence in the town of Brimswell. And for some reason, after that autumn, I could not get comfortable. I couldn’t find my footing. I began feeling anxious again.  Feelings I thought I had overcome - jumpy, worried, pensive. The night here seemed blacker than the darkest new moon night back home. There was now a perpetual fog over Brimswell. It seemed to rest on the shoulders of the Brimswell residents, as if hitching a ride right into their lives, eavesdropping on our conversations, and even our private thoughts. At night, the fog waited patiently outside while the townspeople slept, keeping itself busy by blocking out the stars.

But what seemed to unhinge me the most was the howling of the wind. I had never in my life heard such desperate, loud wind. Incessant. It would not shut up, no matter how hard I wished for it to stop. It would mold and morph into different personalities. It was a woman wailing, a sad animal whimpering, or a group of children mocking and taunting. 

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

I was startled from staring at the ceiling beams when I heard someone knocking intensely at the door. My eyes opened wide and I sat up, listening, KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!  There it was again. 

“Miss Miranda!” I heard someone call. 

I quickly got up, grabbed my shawl and went out into the hallway. My aunt peeked her head out of her room. 

“Who is it?” She whispered. 

“I don’t know,” I replied.

From the top of the stairs, I called out, “Who is it?” My heart was racing. 

“It’s Jacob, Ma’am. Master Brimswell’s butler.”

I looked at my aunt. She motioned for me to go to the door.

I slowly opened it. It was an old man.

“Miss Miranda, I’m sorry to disturb you so late, but Mrs. Brimswell is very ill and the doctor is away. Can you please come?”

“Jacob?” Said my aunt from the top of the staircase. “What’s the matter?” 

“It’s Mrs. Brimswell, Ma’am. She’s very ill.” 

“Mrs. Brimswell?” Asked my aunt.

“Yes, ma’am.”

I looked at my aunt. 

“Go, child.” She said.  “Take some extra blankets.” 

I put my coat on over my nightgown, and the shawl on top of that, and pulled out two blankets from the armoire.

Outside, the fog landed on my face. 

The butler helped me into the carriage. 

“Here,” I said. “Take this.” And handed him a blanket. 

He was thin and frail. His winter jacket was threadbare. 

“Thank you, Ma’am.” 

He flung it over like a cape and carefully climbed up on the carriage. 

The carriage was very small–made for one person, possibly two squeezed in. It was lined with red velvet that looked like it was new a hundred years ago. The carriage began to move slowly despite the butler’s original urgency. I had never been inside the Manor before but had always wanted to.

The wheels began to roll, over and over, crunching the frozen snow. The wind snarled like two wolves about to fight. It would subside and return with a low whimper, a plea for mercy. 

As we turned the final corner, there it loomed, Brimswell Manor. What supposedly had once been a fairytale castle, now loomed like a decrepit beast.

I had heard stories of Brimswell Manor. The town of Brimswell is named after the Brimswell family. Shortly after I had arrived, my aunt invited her friends over for tea, to introduce me to their circle. They were a delightful bunch of old ladies. They fawned over me, my clothes, my hair. They wondered why I hadn’t married, but all agreed I needn’t rush it either. Soon they were reminiscing about their childhoods. They recalled with fondness playing in the Brimswell woods, picking spring flowers, and making hair wreaths. 

“Do you remember our snowman contest?” Laughed Beatrice. 

“Remember the Christmas parties?” Said Eleanor to the group. “They were a little girl’s dream come true.” She said dreamily. 

“Even the President had visited.” Said Mrs. Antoinette.

Mrs. Willem sighed. “But now, that beautiful house, gone to ruin.” 

The ladies tisked and shook their heads. 

“What did it look like inside?” I asked. 

“Oh! My dear!” 

They stumbled over each other to who would describe it best.

“The walls were lined with the most beautiful silk wallpaper. Crystal chandeliers glittered from every room.” Said Mrs. Antoinette.

The other ladies nodded. 

“And the food!” Said Mrs. Willem. “I remember being little and looking at tables covered in mountains of cookies!” She laughed. “I remember looking at my father for permission to take one and he nodded yes!” She motioned slowly as if taking a cookie. “And I remember thinking, to this day, how delicious that cookie was. It was a shortbread cookie with a mound of jam in the middle. I had never tasted anything so good!” 

“I remember.” Said Aunt Edith. “By the end of the night, all of us kids running around grabbing as many cookies as we could stuff our faces with! Hahaha! And all the grownups having too much fun to care.” They all laughed recalling the memories.

“But now,” said Mrs. Antionette grimly, “they say the place has been taken over by rats, bats, and…other things.”

“Do you mean the ghosts?” Says Mrs. Willem. 

“No. No ghosts, Mary. No such thing as ghosts.” Said Mrs. Antionette

That evening, after the ladies had gone home, my aunt and I sat by the fire. 

“Auntie, are there really ghosts at Brimswell Manor?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never seen any. But I haven’t been inside the Manor in over 20 years.”

“Really? But you’re their closest neighbor. You’ve never had a reason to go there? Do they still have parties?”

“Oh! No, my dear. No parties. Since Mrs. Brimswell died, everything fell apart.”

Aunt Edie quietly sipped on her tea, lost in thought.

“I went to her funeral.” She said. “It was so sad. She fell down the stairs.”

“Oh, Auntie, how terrible. Were you friends with her?”

“Yes, we were friends. She liked to keep to herself though, but on occasion, we would find each other, walking the same path around the estate and we would walk together.” 

“I would invite her over for tea. We were both usually at home and alone. I thought it might be nice to sit by the fire, have a cuppa tea, a chat. But she would always feign some excuse. She had a pot of stew boiling, or she was expecting a worker to fix a leaky pipe. At first it bothered me. But we would continue our walk, and our walks would be pleasant enough, so I decided to just leave her be and accept what she could give. 

“But it was curious,” she said, as if recalling something odd. “One day I was walking and I spotted her. “Charlotte!” I called out, and she turned, waved, and walked over to me, as we would do when one of us would see the other. I remember she smiled but I noticed her face looked pale and she seemed agitated. We were near my house so I asked her if she wanted to come in for tea, and this time she agreed. She had never agreed before. 

“She confided in me, Miranda. She was physically frightened. She felt her husband wanted her gone. I tried to make her feel better, saying it was the bleak winter that made people think all kinds of crazy thoughts. I tried to make her laugh with some nonsense stories. But two days later, she was dead. Had fallen down the stairs. Many people suspect she was pushed. I’ve always felt so terrible about it. She tried to tell me but I didn’t listen.”

The Brimswell Manor, the majestic, grand house the town was named after, was now my closest neighbor. Although I had been curious about it, I never imagined I would see it in the middle of the night still in my nightgown.

The house was cavernous… and so dark I could barely see the floor beneath my feet. I had to trust the butler’s shaky steps, one foot slowly in front of the other. We climbed up a large staircase, and then walked down a long hallway, all by the light of a small lantern the butler clutched in his hand. At the end of the hallway was a large door. He opened it and motioned for me to enter. It was a black void. 

“Master Brimswell, Miss Miranda is here.” Said Jacob quietly. 

There were several more candles lit and my eyes began to adjust to the light. The room was immense. Grotesque forms now began to reveal their true identity - as a huge canopy bed in the middle of the room. Sitting next to it, I saw a figure of a man. He looked up, then turned away. 

“Hello,” I said. 

But the cavernous dark sucked up my little word. I wasn’t sure he had heard me. 

The butler motioned for me to get closer. 

“It’s too late, Jacob. She’s gone.” Mr. Brimswell said. 

I walked closer to the man now and to the person lying in the bed. He looked up at me. I recognized he was the man I had seen at the store. He was Mr. Brimswell?  

I turned to look at the person in the bed and caught my breath. 

It was a young woman, around 20 years old. She had long, dark hair that spilled around her like a black halo against the white sheets. Her eyes were still half open. She lay there, white and stiff as a board.

I feel that the souls that were born of my generation were tasked with and able to handle (I have to believe this) the task of healing our ancestral traumas — evolving the baggage we inherited and came into this life lugging.

For thousands of years, man has ruled. There have always been extraordinary women who have broken through their society’s customs of the time, but it wasn’t until fairly recent in history, like the last 150 years, that an unprecedented number of women have discarded their shackles of a man ruling them/owning them - whether it was a father, brother, husband, son, or priest.

My mother talks pretty badly about her abusive, drunk father. And yet, his machoman attitude and bravado are the stuff of legends in my family and both the men and women hold him in high regard. Even my mother, who “hated him” (her words) speaks with a sense of pride when she retells a story involving his fearless tough persona. One of his beliefs was women are either whores or (saint-like) wives, there is nothing in between. He believed women had no use for higher learning and refused to pay for my mother’s schooling, claiming in his logic, why would he pay for her school so another man could reap the benefit? Let her future husband pay if he wanted her to go to school.

So instead, my mother left the house, scorned not only by her father as a whore, but by some of her female family members and friends, who also shared his beliefs. It was what everybody agreed was the “truth” at the time.

She did marry a man, because life was just easier for a woman that way, and had two children, of which she casually says, “And I never even wanted children!” Being a mother and housewife was antithetical to what her soul was asking of her - to break from the patriarchy and be a strong, independent woman. That was what many of the souls of her generation were called to work on.

Coming from a poor, third-world country mentality, where the men enjoyed their alcohol and whatever else they wanted, where culturally, a man’s strength was also measured in their virility, people often turned a blind eye to men’s dalliances. It was, after all, their right as men to do as they pleased. The women toiled at home, caring for the many children they had due to lack of contraception.

My mother’s belief about men, what she heard from her mother, what she learned from her own life experiences and later passed down to me, was that men were useless and not to be relied on. Her theory became her reality when her husband abandoned her with a 3-year-old son and a 3-month-old baby girl (me) - when the bastard up and died on us - due to a work accident. My immigrant mother, who didn’t speak English, had to find work and raise two kids on her own. Her soul had a job to do, and one way or another, her soul was going to know what being an independent woman meant, in so many ways. And that learning would continue to come with time.

A year or so later, another man came into her life. He could fix things and entered my mother’s house through his usefulness. He was also macho and masculine, much like her father was, and similarly, expected the woman to cook, clean, and serve him like the king he considered himself to be. My mother found herself catering to him and his cronies, making batch after batch of guacamole, refreshing the chips bowl, bringing another round of beers, and picking up the empties when they would sit around and watch the boxing games. She had become her mother. After all she had fought for — all the snubs and gossip she had endured, here she was, the same as all the other women in her life, serving a man.

Even though my mother “never wanted kids”, she ended up having a third child, a daughter by this man. At first, she thought her growing bump was a tumor because she had gotten her tubes cut after her second child. Later she found out she was pregnant. The same doctor who had cut her tubes confirmed it.

“But how could this be, Doctor? You cut my tubes.”

“Yes, but I felt you were too young (she was 32) and that you might change your mind, so I just snipped them slightly.”

This happened and there was nothing she could really do about it. A man took it upon himself to decide that she would “probably change her mind.”

To make a long story short, the new husband gushed over his little girl but kept the other two children to the side. Let their mother deal with them. But my mother, still healing, still dragging old patriarchal beliefs about the “man of the house”, struggling to raise three children, only had the time and energy to give proper attention to one of her children, and that had to be the son, of course. So I was the satellite child, hovering around for a crumb of love or affection that may fall from the other two children.

My mother and this man eventually divorced seven years later when he got “the itch” and left with another woman. His darling daughter was also abandoned. He went on to have another family, two more children, and later, was blessed with two grandchildren.

And yesterday he died of liver cancer. He had had a liver transplant 17 years ago and the mother fucker lived another 17 years. Maybe his soul still had work to do, too.

I know this may cause controversy, but when I heard of his passing, my first thought was I don’t mind if he fries in hell for a little while. He was not a good father to me. He never stepped up to the plate. He didn’t even try. That caused me a shitload of trauma and his death brought them all up for me again. For that I am grateful. I didn’t even realize these shards of trauma were still living and breathing inside me. Pain comes up to be seen, loved, healed, and released. I’m glad I am consciously aware of that now and can suffer through whatever I’m feeling, sit with it, listen to it, and love it to evolve it.

I go back to the point of this essay - my generation of souls came in to heal the sins of our fathers (and mothers and ancestors). Thank you for the suffering and pain that led me to seek healing. And I thank myself for doing the healing work (so I don’t continue to pass on inherited baggage to my son). Pain is often a great agent for healing. And my husband, my son’s father, is also a soul coming in to heal and evolve old baggage. He cooks, he cleans, he works, he co-parents. He is evolving the masculine energy to a higher vibration and together we are bringing balance to the feminine and masculine energies. My son is growing up seeing this way as very natural.

I’m very excited for the next generation, to see what they create. They have inherited other burdens like global warming, technology that is getting ahead of our spiritual growth, and the threat of nuclear war. Perhaps because these new souls are less burdened with the baggage of thousands of years, they will arrive lighter to the critical moments that face them.

Do your healing work. I know it’s hard and often feels like shit. But do it. And even if you don’t have kids, do it because you are raising the collective vibration of the planet and every living thing on it. We are that powerful. May all souls rest in peace after this tough job.
