Comfort for Critters was created to help animal shelter pets, and clearly this remains our overriding mission. As a goal, it doesn’t get much simpler, and it hasn’t changed a bit since the first blanket was stitched in 2007. We endeavor to comfort all the pets we can’t adopt, but wish we could!

However, it’s become clear that God had more blessings in mind when the seed for CFC was planted. I’ve heard numerous stories from volunteers over the years about how “crafting to comfort pets” has brought comfort to the person on the other end of the yarn. I’m not sure if “fiber therapy” is actually a thing, but after doing a bit of research, it seems its effects are real!

I always like to share what I learn with volunteers as a way of validating what they already know. I also want to share them with those considering helping CFC, or any similar group. The desire to help others is to be applauded and listened to. Or maybe you know someone who could benefit from a bit of “fiber therapy”. If they love animals, it may be a sneaky way of securing for them some of these blessings!

These studies are available in their entirety on the internet, but each one has a bottom line that’s heart-warming, and applicable, to us crafters.

· A study published by the Journal of Positive Psychology (Dr. Tamlin Connor, lead author) showed that students who participated in calming exercises, like knitting and crocheting, were happier on the days after they completed these exercises. They were more enthusiastic, in general, too.

· The Mayo Clinic has reported that senior citizens who participate in crafts (in this case, knitting) are 30–50% less likely to experience “mild cognitive impairment,” or memory loss, than those seniors who did not. A different study showed that the two-handed and repetitive aspects of knitting, combined with the tactile and visual stimulation, make it an especially helpful therapy for the brain.

· Another study, this one in 2013 by Cardiff University, questioned over 3,500 knitters worldwide. It found that the more frequently people knitted, the happier and calmer they felt!

· Other important research comes from Carrie and Alton Barron. They explain in their book, The Creativity Cure: Building Happiness With Your Own Two Hands, how crafting is a great tool for alleviating anxiety and depression. “The rhythmic, mathematical nature of knitting and crocheting keep the mind absorbed in a healthy way, providing an escape from stressful thoughts but allowing for internal reflection,” says Barron.

· A study in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences showed that cutting down on TV time and increasing time spent on crafts (such as crochet or knitting) decreased the odds of memory loss, later in life, by 30–50%. It also promoted the development of new neural pathways in the brain.

· Herbert Benson, a leader in mind/body medicine, reports that the repetitive nature of needlework creates a “relaxed state” in a person. This state is similar to what’s achieved by meditation and yoga.

What Our Volunteers Have Taught Me

I’ve personally heard from many volunteers that the act of knitting or crocheting has helped them tremendously in a few of the challenges they have faced. They may be trying to lose weight (crafting, instead of snacking, in front of the TV) or to quit smoking (can’t “light up” after a meal).

Often, it’s dealing with the struggles we all face at one point in our lives. Crafting, for many, has been a way to “keep busy” during times of high-stress, recovery from illness or injury or a way to feel productive after a job loss or even a much-anticipated retirement. For me personally, creating something beautiful, at the end of the tough day, has gotten me through some of the most difficult times in my life.

Maybe the most common feedback, on how creating blankets helps ones mental health, is when someone finds themselves in the valley of grief. A simple project can be a way to focus your mind on something productive, and something that simply distracts you for a much-needed moment in time.

The Greatest Blessing

So even though CFC started as a way to help pets, helping people is apparently in our DNA too. The blankets surely comfort the pet, but the person making the blanket can find comfort as well.

Maybe it happens because the repetitive motion of the needlework helps quiet a busy mind. Maybe it’s the satisfaction of creating something full of vibrant colors. Maybe it’s the feeling of accomplishment that comes from finishing a project. Or maybe it’s simply knowing that the time spent with a simple ball of yarn is helping another living creature.

Whatever the reason, I’ve heard enough stories to believe there is something special happening on both ends of the yarn. In this crazy world, crafting a pet blanket may put you on the road to feeling better, even if you already feel great. I’d humbly suggest you forget the “apple a day” and try a row or two a day. In the end, crafting may just be what the doctor ordered.

“If you whisper your wish to that butterfly on your arm,” it’s sure to come true. Those words, from a long-time friend, began a recent hike in the woods. Really? I thought. Since work nearly had me at the breaking point, I had many wishes to share. However, before I did, I had to know more. I also had to share what I coincidentally learned just that morning about the “Butterfly People” said to inhabit a region of the US. I was confident it would be an interesting hike in the woods indeed.

As our walk commenced, it was explained to me that the Native American Zuni Tribe, believe butterflies can carry our prayers to the gods. Apparently, if you whisper your wish to a butterfly, they will silently and dutifully carry it up to heaven. This sounded amazing to me, though by then the beautiful Monarch was done visiting, and likely a few towns over.

I wondered, as I pondered the prayer list I keep on the Notes section of my iPhone, if I was trying to take the place of these butterflies? As I remember people in my prayers, and ask that they “find direction in retirement,” or “see a return to full health,” am I silently and dutifully carrying messages as well? Maybe the Zuni Tribe foresaw the value of whispering your greatest wish to a trusted friend? Maybe it’s my own hubris, thinking I could be the one to deliver a message to the heavens on my friends’ behalf.

I do think the Zunis were wise in identifying a butterfly as the messenger. I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone who did not stop dead in their tracks, with the sight of one. I certainly do, and this morning was no exception. I wonder though if people realize, or even think about, just how impressive these flying critters are?

Yes, they are beautiful, but even the plain ones can impress us with their flying. The dazzling ones, some as large as 12 inches across, completely captivate us as they wander by. As with all creatures though, there’s always more to their story, some of which may be unpleasant. Consider yourself warned.

Telling their story will of course, not accurately describe all butterflies. In the US alone there’s over 700 distinct species to consider. Expand that to the planet, and you’d need to cover 20,000 different types, each with their God-given and unique characteristics.

One thing they all do share is their ability to complete the most dramatic transformation ever seen in the animal kingdom. Their metamorphosis transforms a creepy crawly caterpillar into a flying work of art. And all that effort, and energy, is spent for the measly four weeks they will exist. I suggest, on their behalf, that it’s worth it.

The butterfly that emerges is astounding in many ways. To start, they have taste sensors in their feet! They use these to determine if a plant is suitable for them to deposit their eggs. They also boast the ultimate protection from predators, since many species are toxic to birds. In addition, verified research has amazed scientists by demonstrating that they can retain memories from their days as a caterpillars. Maybe their resilient memories are the reason they can be trusted with our wishes.

Impressive insects to be sure, but with a darker side as well. While these creatures are admired for their beauty, as they flow from flower to flower, you may be surprised to learn some of the other things they feast upon. Some species will never visit a flower for sustenance, but prefer rotting fruit, animal dung and even the decaying corpse of an animal. Some even embrace their craving for mud, human sweat, and urine (including their own).

Despite their dark side, they are an important critter in all of our lives, being important pollinators. Second only to bees, they play a key role in plant reproduction, making them responsible for much of the food we take for granted and enjoy. However, if you’d like to give them a thankful embrace, you’d better be outside when it’s warm. Despite a sweet nature, they are cold-blooded critters, needing temperatures of at least 86 degrees to fly. On cool days, you will certainly not see them out and about.

If you are lucky enough, as I was, to come face to face with these winged creatures, do take a minute embrace the surprising things you have in common with a simple butterfly. They may all look alike, but for those who pay attention, they’ll find that the pattern on their wings is as unique to the butterfly, as a fingerprint is to a human. They’ll see them flap their wings in specific patterns and wiggle their bodies in specific ways, all to communicate with other butterflies, win over a mate, or try to scare off a predator. It’s eerily similar to a human’s facial expressions or gestures!

As we continued our hike, looking out specifically for any additional butterflies, I unfolded the story, actually folklore, I had read that morning about the Butterfly People of Joplin, Missouri. In May of 2011, a devasting EF5 tornado tore through this small town, destroying thousands of buildings and sadly taking the lives of 150 people. As one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history, it also gave birth to the Butterfly People legend.

Witnesses to these unique people were primarily children, aged 12 years or younger. They reported seeing angelic, glowing beings with large, colorful “butterfly” wings. The Butterfly People, as they were later called, had a clear purpose of protecting and comforting the children as the tornado struck. These young witnesses saw them shielding people from falling debris all while they exuded calm, as they radiated a peaceful, nonverbal, sense of security to those around them.

People were convinced that they were spared death because these supernatural creatures surrounded them with protection, even as their home was swept away. They hovered over them and moved quickly to stand between children and flying wreckage. Some individuals just experienced an invisible, protective force, while others were able to describe the butterflies.

The folklore continues to this day, as a tale of resilience and hope, even as the town has rebuilt itself. If you wander the downtown area of Joplin, you’ll see more than a few murals that include vibrant, beautiful butterflies. I like to think that if protectors were visiting the town that day, the choice of a butterfly form was a good one. The most endearing and hopeful thing we can learn from butterflies is their message of transformation. Consider the egg, then larva, then pupa, then butterfly. It’s miraculous growth, steadfast resistance and unending renewal, all wrapped in a tiny, glorious body!

I recently poured through a report by Michael’s on the crafting industry in 2026. Honestly, I never knew such a report existed, but they produce this yearly and I found it just fascinating. That interest is likely because I’m seeing more than ever before how crafting, or more specifically crafting our comfort blankets for pets, is benefiting the person, as much as the pet. Much of Michael’s report, seemed to back this up, often in surprising ways.

One of the fastest growing trends, they identified is what they call “Main Character Maintenance.” As Michaels explains, “Consumers are curating their personal lore in physical form, turning junk journals, vision boards and personalized keepsakes into tangible archives of identity.”

The numbers are impressive. Michaels reports that junk journaling searches are up 63% year-over-year and vision board searches have increased 61%, reflecting a growing desire to preserve memories and tell personal stories through creativity. So, what does this all have to do with pet blankets? Actually, a lot.

In 2026, at a time when so much of our lives exist on screens, we’re often passive spectators of the world around us. I’m reminded of a quote by Annie Dillard, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” It actually gives me hope to know people are rediscovering the satisfaction of creating something tangible, which represents who they are and what matters most to them.

At Comfort for Critters, we see this same impulse to express what matters most. Every blanket donated to a shelter tells a story. Some are made by retirees looking for a meaningful way to spend their time. Others are created by students learning to crochet. Still others come from volunteers who are navigating grief, illness, or major life transitions and find comfort in creating something both tangible and meaningful. They are spending their days, or their time, creating comfort. This becomes part of their identity, as the “main character” in their story.

When volunteers create blankets, they aren’t simply making a craft project. They are creating a tangible expression of compassion. When that blanket is placed beneath a frightened shelter dog or wrapped around a nervous kitten, it becomes part of that pet’s story as well. Comfort for Critters exists because stories matter. Every blanket connects two stories, one human and one animal, in a way that often brings comfort, hope, and healing to them both. There are so many aspects of CFC that I just love, but finding out that as we work to comfort pets, we are in fact comforting ourselves just blew me away. I receive emails every week from new volunteers expressing how much crafting has helped them cope with loss, anxiety and especially the news of the day.

More and more now, this news cycle doesn’t seem to slow down. Not even for a day! Between the constant alerts, demanding jobs, and the weight of everyday responsibilities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. I for one, am always on the lookout for ways to push back on the negativity and simple ways we can all try to make things a bit better.

That’s exactly where Jazmin A. from Torrance, California found herself. She wasn’t searching for a new hobby, she was searching for a way to help. “I’m not able to provide every homeless cat and dog in the world a loving home,” she shared, “but at least I can make them comfy blankets, full of love so they feel safe and at ease.” She sounded like a perfect addition to the CFC team.

That simple idea led her to Comfort for Critters, and to a new sense of purpose and a new passion. Jazmin actually taught herself how to knit with one goal in mind. She wanted to make blankets for shelter animals! What she discovered along the way was something many of us are searching for without even realizing it. “I really enjoyed watching my knitting improve with each and every blanket I made,” she said. “I found a new hobby I enjoyed doing during this difficult year. Knitting helped me stay busy and do something productive while at home.” In a world that often feels chaotic, knitting and crochet offer something rare. They offer a calming, focused activity and the quiet satisfaction of creating something meaningful with your own hands.

Why This Hobby Works—Even If You’ve Never Tried It

I find it amazing that she learned to knit, just to help! I know that often starting something new can feel intimidating, so I’m impressed. But I must say that making blankets for shelter pets is one of the most forgiving ways to learn! As I often explain to those getting started, unlike large, complicated projects, pet blankets are small, quick and manageable. Even a beginner can complete a pet blanket in a couple of days, which means you get that wonderful sense of accomplishment quickly!

I always remind new volunteers that the pets will notice the softness and the warmth. They won’t see a dropped a stitch or an uneven edge. Even after all these years, I find that reassuring. In fact, to me those “imperfections” are part of what makes each blanket unique.

Another huge benefit, even to crafters with a lot of experience, is that it’s easy and fun to try new techniques and stitches (with minimal commitment). Each blanket becomes a chance to explore, without pressure. And at the end of this exploration, you actually have something to show off!

Small Acts, Real Impact

When Jazmin started knitting, she was looking for a way to cope with a difficult time. What she found was a way to create comfort in a world that often feels uncomfortable. Her blankets now do exactly what she hoped. As she recalls, “I think these blankets will help the pets feel happy and safe while they are in the shelters. Hopefully the blankets help them adapt to their forever homes once they are adopted.” I can assure her they will.

As Comfort for Critters moves through its twentieth year helping pets, I remain amazed that a simple blanket, can make such a difference. I spend time every day managing CFC, but it can be frustrating that as we’ve grown, I am no longer able to visit all the shelters with a bag full of blankets, as I did back in 2007. At that time, I would see firsthand how the blankets were being used and how they were making a difference. The challenge now is that even as we ship out over a thousand blankets a month, we don’t get to personally see what happens after a blanket leaves our hands. But then an email arrives to remind us all of exactly why we do this work.

Recently, Michael Incopero, a foster volunteer with Safe Haven Dog Rescue, shared a heartfelt message about the role Comfort for Critters blankets play in the lives of the dogs they save. His words were a powerful reminder that every blanket tells a story.

More Than a Blanket

Michael began by congratulating Comfort for Critters on our 19th anniversary, writing: “Nothing short of amazing how you are closing in on a quarter of a million handmade comfort blankets distributed free of charge to shelters and rescues around the USA.” A quarter of a million blankets is certainly a milestone worth celebrating, but in the end it’s just a number. What matters is what happens when those blankets reach frightened, homeless animals.

Safe Haven Dog Rescue primarily rescues dogs from rural shelters in Tennessee and Arkansas. These are often dogs with few resources and limited chances. Michael described how rescues like theirs step in during crises, including a massive effort in early 2025 when homeless camps in Texas were closed and thousands of dogs suddenly faced euthanasia.

In the midst of all these challenging situations, I feel grateful to Michael that our blankets accompany every dog entering a foster home. According to Michael, “In every kit that goes to a foster home with a dog in Safe Haven hands, is a comfort snuggle.” For many of these dogs, that blanket is the first thing they have ever owned. “Many of these dogs have never had a soft place to sleep much less a blanket and nothing to call their own,” he adds.

A Dog Called a “Mistake”

The story that touched me most was that of a little dog named Romeo. A Chihuahua-Yorkie mix, this pup had been discarded by a breeder in Tennessee. Michael shares, “He was called a mistake. At just over 12 months his value to the breeder dropped every day he got older and beyond the ‘puppy’ state. A mix of Chihuahua and Yorkie and all of 12 pounds, he was so much garbage to the breeder to be tossed out.” Romeo was surrendered to a high-kill shelter, where his future looked bleak, but fortunately volunteers intervened. He was rescued just before his time ran out and eventually transported nearly 950 miles to Illinois, where Michael agreed to foster him.

Not surprisingly, when Romeo arrived he was terrified. Michael recalled, “When Romeo got here he came off the transport van and would not move. This little guy was highly stressed.” He was afraid of doors, didn’t know how to climb stairs and wouldn’t walk on a leash. “I’m not sure in his 12 months on this earth he had ever been free to roam around a yard, much less go on a walk.” He had likely spent much of his life confined and isolated. “This is where the comfort blanket became essential,” says Michael.

A Safe Space

Michael described how he prepared Romeo’s crate. “His crate was set up to be his safe space. He had his snuggle to sleep with, some handmade chew toys (also courtesy of Comfort for Critters) plus his food and water,” says Michael. This safe haven and a blanket to snuggle with gave Romeo all the security he needed.

“He ate with his blanket, slept with his blanket” adds Michael. When thunder struck or unfamiliar noises frightened him, Romeo could retreat to his crate and curl up beside the blanket that had become his own. Day by day, he grew more confident. He explored the house, learned to play, and began to trust. According to Michael, after only three weeks “he transformed from a scared, nervous little dog who wouldn’t eat into a highly confident one who charged around the yard playing with the resident dogs and zooming all over the inside the house.”

Then came the day every foster hopes for - Adoption Day! I was thrilled to learn that Romeo did get adopted by a wonderful, loving family. Best of all, Michael assures us “his blanket went with him to his furever house!” The blanket carried the scents of his foster home, his foster family, and his canine friends - helping ease yet another transition.

The Impact We Don’t See

One of the most meaningful parts of Michael’s letter was his encouragement, even though volunteers rarely witness the results of their efforts firsthand. He wrote, “While you all don’t get to see the impact in person these blankets make - we the fosters do.” The stories he has shared are always remarkable. “Some of these pups become so attached to their blanket they insist that it go everywhere with them – in the car to help with their car anxiety or to the vet or even just going to another room in the house.”

One foster’s security camera captured a dog trying to drag his blanket into another room. When the blanket became tangled in the crate door, the dog simply dragged the entire crate across the house because he wasn’t willing to leave his blanket behind.

Michael also described situations where frightened dogs escaped during walks. Unable to find their way home, they were eventually guided back by the familiar scent of their crate, housing their Comfort for Critters blanket, placed strategically outside.

It Takes a Village

Near the end of his email, Michael reflected on the many people involved in every successful adoption. “It truly takes a village to save a homeless dog,” he says. He listed shelter workers, transport volunteers, veterinarians, foster families, food suppliers, donors, and countless others who each play a role in helping a dog reach a loving home.

Then he included Comfort for Critters volunteers among those essential contributors. “You are an important part of the village it takes to save these pups.” That sentence means more than I can express. Every volunteer who has ever crocheted a square, knitted a blanket, sewn a quilt, packed a box, or donated supplies is part of that village. You may never meet Romeo, or even know the name of the dog who curls up on the blanket you made. You may never witness the moment a frightened animal finally relaxes, or the joy of Adoption Day. But those moments happen thousands of times every year. I for one, feel so blessed that Michael shares these stories from time to time with me, and to know about the amazing work he is doing!

So, as you start your next Comfort for Critters blanket, I hope you’ll remember Romeo. A little dog once called a “mistake,” but who now has a family. That transition was made possible by a village of caring people. In that village, for at least part of the day, is where you and I get to live.

Sometimes I feel like I just wander through life wondering where all the empathy and compassion has gone. Does everyone just think about themselves first, second and third? I certainly know I’ve been guilty of this, but at least I’m trying and that must count for something. I hope it does anyway.

One place I do find those elusive qualities is when working with one of the shelters in our program and hearing about their daily acts of kindness, which aren’t random at all. It helps me to stop complaining for a bit, and actually want to do more.

I doubt I’m alone in finding animal shelter workers to be amazing, but I probably have a bit of a unique perspective on them, since I get to hear their stories so often. I hear about the times they receive a big box of blankets, and feel like it’s Christmas morning. I hear how they often pour over the blankets, matching them to the perfect pet. I hear about how much they enjoy watching the cats knead their new blanket or how cute it is when the dog drags their blankie everywhere they go throughout the foster home.

Words will never be able to capture just how happy this makes me. To hear that the pets are enjoying our blankets, but to also know that each creation can be a drop of sunshine in a foster mom’s, or shelter volunteer’s, day. It’s an amazing thing, to be able to package up sunshine and ship it across the country, but every box we send, or bag that’s dropped off, can be exactly that.

So it’s easy to admire these people who dedicate their lives to helping pets, but it’s harder to wrap your mind around the emotional cost of doing this work. Some of that cost shows up as Compassion Fatigue, which is why I say it just sucks to care sometimes.

Compassion Fatigues is more than being tired, it’s more than needing a vacation, it’s more than being burned out. It’s complete emotional exhaustion, from the constant exposure to the suffering of others and the never-ending demand for empathy. Of course all caring people deal with this as part of life, but we can usually tune it out by changing the channel or putting down the smartphone for an evening. When you’re caring for a host of little lives, with wagging tails and amazingly big eyes, it’s a whole level harder.

Compassion Fatigue is also specific to caretaker roles. It affects people who are constantly giving, without their emotional tanks being refilled by either themselves or those they care for. “I just can’t keep doing this, I haven’t had a full weekend off in, well years” or “it’s the 24/7 nature of it, I’m constantly and forever ‘on’”, are all things I’ve heard directly from shelter workers.

Over the years, I’ve partnered with organizations of all sizes, from large, fully staffed municipal shelters to small foster care groups run by one or two women. And yes, they are almost always women. The worst cases of this fatigue sadly show up in the smallest of groups. It’s the ones started by a single, passionate caregiver who becomes the founder, medical liaison, social media manager and custodian. Walking away, taking a break, is simply not an option. Trust me, I’ve seen this in my own mirror, but I don’t have the lives of innocent critters in the balance.

Since I have battled this fatigue myself, I can honestly tell you what makes a huge difference, and that’s the smallest of gestures. Small kindnesses that say simply, “we see you, we support you.” I find these so helpful to my mental health that I actually have what I call a “smile file” for the times I need encouragement just to open up the email and start a new day.

So how can we begin to address this for shelter workers? In that respect, we’re ahead of the game. When a box of our creations shows up, comforting the pets is just the start of the story. These blankets, your blankets, are a tangible reminder to the people who open the boxes and bags that what they are doing, the sacrifices they are making, really do matter. It matters so much in fact, that there are strangers out there spending hours meticulously crafting blankets. We give of our time, because we care deeply.

Shelter workers can see the effort and time put into each creation and I hope they experience a moment that’s free of the sadness and stress they may be facing that day. I had one shelter manager tell me “when your box shows up, it’s like someone reminding us we’re not alone.” I think we all need that reminder more often than any of us realize and more often than any of us receive it. Ah, the reality of the world.

Over the many years at CFC we’ve included with our blanket shipments a thank you card at top of the box, small angel ornaments for the staff and coloring pages that are filled out to express gratitude to the shelters. Small gestures to be sure, but if CFC has taught me anything it’s that small gestures can have big impacts. The next time you are packing up your creations to help the shelter pets, remember the people who care for them as well. Remember, when you comfort the caregiver, you’re also helping every pet they touch.

There are days when the world can feel unbearably heavy. You turn on the television, scroll through social media, or glance at the headlines, and it can seem as though every story is filled with anger, fear, cruelty, or division. The constant flood of bad news has a way of wearing me down, and I don’t think I’m alone. Over time, it can leave us wondering if kindness still matters… or if there is any way for ordinary people to push back against all the ugliness.

That is one of the reasons Comfort for Critters means so much to me. I see every blanket we send out into the world as a quiet (and beautiful!) act of defiance against hopelessness. This same idea rang true, in a thank you note I received from one of the shelters we support, Harley’s House of Dreams. It read, “thank you so much. The little dogs we rescue often come from sad and neglectful situations. When they arrive, scared and unsure of the world, something as simple as a soft blanket can mean everything. We are so incredibly grateful to the wonderful people at Comfort for Critters who generously create these beautiful blankets. The kindness brings comfort to our dogs who have been through so much. It tells them that love still exists!”

That final sentence meant the world to me, and I hope it warms your heart as well. “It tells them that love still exists.” What a powerful thing for a blanket to say. When a shelter opens one of our boxes, they are not simply unpacking yarn and fabric. They are unpacking proof that strangers still care and are willing to spend hours crafting for an animal they will never meet. In a world that can sometimes feel cold and disconnected, those boxes remind shelter workers that compassion, goodness and yes, love still exists.

This is also felt by the families, adopting their newest cuddle-buddy. They remind these families that their pet mattered to someone long before adoption day. That someone carefully chose colors and stitches, in hopes of comforting a frightened dog or cat somewhere far away.

I like to think though that the most important message is the one sent to the pets themselves. Many of these precious pets have known neglect, abandonment, fear, or worse. I’m sure some arrive uncertain whether the world is safe at all. Then suddenly, they are wrapped in softness, given warmth and treated gently. Though they do not understand where the blanket came from, I truly believe they can feel what it represents: safety, comfort, care, love. I like to think that the blanket quietly tells them, “What happened before is not the whole story. There is kindness here now, and there is hope ahead because love still exists.”

In a simple way, one of the best techniques to push back against the ugliness in the world is to create things of beauty and simply give them away. Not for recognition, or profit, or because someone demanded it. Every stitch made for Comfort for Critters is a small refusal to give in to cynicism. Every finished blanket, and every donated box, reminds the world that goodness is still alive in ordinary people. Perhaps that is why these thank you notes mean so much to all of us. They remind us that what we do matters more than we realize.

To every single volunteer who has ever made a blanket for Comfort for Critters, I say thank you. You are doing far more than you may realize. You are reminding shelter workers, families, and frightened animals that love still exists.

When I started Comfort for Critters, almost 20 years ago, the vision was simple. I just wanted to provide soft, handmade blankets to comfort dogs and cats who were waiting in shelters for their forever family. The idea was a small act of kindness and a way to ease a difficult time for these pets. What I didn’t fully realize then, and what the volunteers I work with continue to show me every single day, is a much bigger lesson I never could have anticipated. I’ve learned through the years that when you follow what you feel called to do, the impact rarely stays small. It grows, stretches and finds its way into nooks and crannies you never could have imagined.

Yes, the blankets you make line kennel floors and are snuggled into crates, giving shelter pets a soft place to rest. That alone is meaningful beyond words. However, that’s just the beginning. Your blankets go home with adopted pets, becoming a comforting connection between their past and their future. I hear this from shelters and foster care systems alike – when a frightened dog or cat enters a brand-new home, surrounded by unfamiliar sights, sounds, and people, it helps immensely to have something that smells like where they came from. The shelter or foster home kept them safe, when their world fell apart, and having a piece of that to hold close can remind them that they are safe still.

Shelter workers have also shared how often your blankets travel along with the pets, and provide reassurance. Whether it’s a trip to the vet or a ride to an adoption event, your blanket becomes one small piece of “home” they can take with them. In a carrier that might otherwise feel cold and confining, your blanket truly softens the experience. It’s something that belongs to them, in a world where so little does.

At adoption events, your work takes on yet another role, and one that I honestly never considered. A cat or dog wrapped in a handmade blanket simply looks loved and cared for – and like it or not, that visual matters. It helps potential adopters see a companion already worthy of affection, rather than a stray. Your blanket quietly tells a story before anyone even opens the cage door.

Often, over these many years, there have been moments when comfort becomes something even more tangible. Early on, shelters told me how they used blankets to help animals recovering from surgery. They would wrap them around warming discs to keep pets warm without risking burns. Some shelters even asked for uniquely designed blankets that incorporated pockets, or pouch-like openings, to safely hold the heating elements. That kind of adaptation wasn’t something I had planned at all, but it was something you made possible. Your willingness to be adaptable and creative meant shelters could care for their pets in more thoughtful, gentle ways during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Even the journey home, the happiest ride of all, often includes your work. New adopters sometimes arrive with a carrier, but little else. Suddenly, your blanket becomes the perfect lining for that hard plastic box. It turns an unfamiliar space into a cozy one. It makes that first trip into a new life just a little softer. All of this from a blanket and all of this from you.

There’s something powerful about following a calling, even when it seems simple. You picked up yarn, fabric, needles, or thread because you wanted to help. In doing so, you’ve created comfort in ways none of us could have fully predicted. So keep going, keep experimenting and keep creating. Try new patterns, new sizes and explore every single idea that comes your way. The truth is, you never quite know where your blanket will end up, or precisely how it will be used. You can however, be certain that it will matter and it will help. I’ve known for a while that your blankets carry kindness into the world, in ways you may never see. I hope that now, you know this too.

There’s something every dog owner senses without needing science to explain it. It’s that the bond we share with our dogs feels steady, ancient, and almost written into who we are. Now, new research highlighted by National Geographic magazine (3/25/2026) gives us a glimpse into just how far back that connection really goes. Amazingly, it goes much farther back than we thought.

“Buddy-buddy” for Over 14,000 Years

Two major genetic studies, published in Nature, have revealed that dogs were already clearly distinct from wolves and living closely with humans more than 14,000 years ago. As researcher Lachie Scarsbrook put it, once humans had dogs, “these dogs are attached to human populations through time.”

That phrase, attached through time, feels especially meaningful. It suggests this wasn’t a temporary alliance, but something enduring. In fact, scientists now believe dogs were part of everyday human life long before agriculture even began. They weren’t just nearby, they were integrated into human culture. Scarsbrook even described them as a kind of “Swiss Army Dog,” adapting to many roles including guarding, hunting, companionship, and maybe even participating in rituals. Sound familiar? It does to my family!

Old Bones, New Meaning

One of the most fascinating parts of the research is how scientists figured this out. For years, it was a challenge to distinguish early dogs from wolves. As one researcher explained, “something dog-like buried next to a human does not a dog make.” People have buried wild animals alongside humans for thousands of years.

By analyzing genetic material from over 200 ancient canine remains (from Belgium to Scotland) researchers were finally able to clearly identify which ones were truly dogs. The oldest confirmed dog was from Switzerland, dating back about 14,200 years. Importantly, these weren’t isolated cases. Across regions and cultures, dogs showed up again and again. They were shown to be widely and clearly connected to human life.

Not Just Useful, But Loved

Here’s where the story becomes especially moving. Across very different ancient cultures, dogs weren’t used as disposable tools, but were treated with meaning. In what is now Turkey, people buried puppies alongside humans. People weren’t just living with dogs, they were grieving them, honoring and remembering them.

In other regions, dog remains were treated in symbolic ways, often mirroring how human remains were handled. As researcher William Marsh noted, “they all seem to treat these dogs in a very, very symbolic manner, similar to how we treat our dogs.” In other words, the love we feel today for our companion animals is not at all new to the human heart.

A Bond That Shaped Both Species

Another remarkable discovery was how enduring this bond was, even when human populations changed dramatically. When early farmers migrated into Europe and replaced much of the human population, they didn’t replace the dogs. “They actually incorporated them into their own dog populations,” one researcher explained. Out of everything people carried forward, including tools, crops, and traditions, they chose to bring dogs along too. That tells you everything.

Why Your Dog Feels Like Family

Scientists emphasize that domestication wasn’t a single moment, but “a long process and a multi-generational thing.” Over thousands of years, humans and dogs shaped each other. What began as cautious coexistence, became something entirely different. As Scarsbrook described it, humans eventually found themselves “in cahoots” with dogs. Not surprisingly, that partnership changed us. It’s why your dog reads your emotions and why they wait by the door. It’s why their presence feels like comfort, not just company. This isn’t just affection, it’s our history, living and breathing at your feet.

The Dogs Still Waiting

And that’s where this story gently turns toward something closer to home. Because while many dogs today are curled up on couches or at our feet, there are still thousands sitting in shelters. They are patiently waiting for their own person, their own place in this long, shared story.

At Comfort for Critters, we think about those dogs often. If dogs have been loving us for over 14,000 years, offering loyalty, comfort, and companionship, then the least we can do is make sure they feel safe, warm, and cared for while they wait.

That’s why every blanket matters. It’s more than yarn and stitches, it’s a small reminder to a shelter dog that they haven’t been forgotten. There are many moments that have kept me going through the past almost 20 years at Comfort for Critters, but few warm my heart quite like seeing young people getting involved. In a world that can often feel heavy, uncertain, and overwhelming, there is something incredibly hopeful about watching a child sit down with a piece of fleece, a crochet hook, or a pair of knitting needles, and decide they want to help a homeless pet. It reminds me that kindness is something that is being passed down.

Over the years, I’ve had the joy of working with scouting groups (both boys and girls) who gather together to make tied-fleece blankets. There’s always laughter, a little bit of chaos, and a whole lot of enthusiasm as they knot each edge, knowing their work will comfort an animal in need. I’ve visited local middle schools, helping out in their home economics classes where students learn to sew by making simple pet blankets. It’s the perfect first project, both easy and impactful. I saw it click for them, way beyond their sewing skills, “I made this… and it’s going to help.”

And then there are the messages I receive from mothers, and grandmothers, who are looking for a way to introduce the young people in their lives to volunteering. They tell me, “My kids love cats and dogs, so I just wanted to find a way for them to help.”

What they discover is that this simple act of making a blanket turns into something much more. It becomes an afternoon of shared purpose and a quiet moment side-by-side. It’s a lesson in compassion that doesn’t require a lecture, just a few inexpensive supplies and the intention to care. Some grandmothers have shared that while babysitting their grandchildren, they’ll sit and work on blankets together. Of course, the trip to deliver their creations to a shelter, is an added bit of fun!

Making CFC blankets is a great project, because for many young people, this is something they can do. As one of our youngest volunteers, Kyri from Lombard, Illinois, so beautifully expressed, “I have always loved to help shelter pets, because I adopted a rescue dog, and she is my best friend in the whole world.” But like so many kids, Kyri ran into a barrier. “The one thing is that I am only 11 years old, too young to volunteer at any of my local shelters.” That’s a reality we don’t often think about, but one I ran into with my own two sons. There are countless young people who want to help, but simply aren’t old enough for most volunteering opportunities.

Fortunately for Kyri, she found Comfort for Critters! “When I found the CFC organization, I jumped at the opportunity to help! I even learned to knit! I hope my blankets make an impact on some animals’ lives!” I’ll admit, I was stunned when I first read her letter and realized she was only 11 years old. Kyri didn’t just make one blanket, she made four, which she donated to the West Suburban Humane Society in Downers Grove, Illinois.

She shared with me, “I love donating! I can’t volunteer yet, so I find it very fun to donate to rescue dogs like mine, because they are so worth it!!!” Her insight into what these blankets mean to animals is just as powerful. “My dog has her own security blanket at home. It keeps her calm and helps her feel safe. I know that a shelter can be a stressful place for any animal, and sometimes the animals need a friend to keep them safe, or even just to cuddle with! I think that my donation will help an animal feel secure in a shelter environment.”

There it is, the heart of it all. A child understanding comfort, empathy, emotional safety, and choosing to put in the hours to offer it to another living being. Kyri even shared how she got started. “I received a kit at Christmas that helped me learn how to knit and to create my first knitted shelter blanket. I went on to knit a second one right away!”

Her story is a reminder of how accessible this kind of giving can be. There are beginner “learn to knit” and “learn to crochet” kits available for those who want a structured start. But you don’t need anything fancy or expensive, a simple crochet hook or pair of knitting needles, a skein of yarn, and a quick stop at YouTube for a tutorial can open the door just as easily.

As I read back through her letter, earlier today, I realized why this part of Comfort for Critters means so much to me. When young people get involved, it’s not just about the blankets, it’s about shaping who they become. It’s showing them that even when they feel “too young” or “too small,” they still have the power to make a difference. Even at my ripe old age, I often feel “too” something. I’ve learned to not let that stop me, but wish I had that lesson decades ago!

A Simple Invitation

If you have children, grandchildren, or young people in your life, consider inviting them into this work. Sit down together, pick up some yarn, fabric, or fleece. Teach them a simple stitch or how to tie a knot. Make a blanket, not just for a shelter pet, but for the experience you’ll share. Because long after the blanket is delivered, what remains is something even more lasting. A memory of kindness, a habit of helping and the understanding that even the smallest hands can change a precious life in a big way.

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion I’m carrying right now, and I know I’m not alone. It’s not just physical exhaustion, it’s emotional, mental, and deeply cumulative. The news cycle never slows. Our responsibilities don’t pause. Even in our homes, true rest can feel out of reach. But one Comfort for Critters volunteer, Hazel, has quietly built something remarkable. To her crafting isn’t just a hobby, it’s a daily ritual of restoration. It’s also something we can all learn from.

“I make time to knit every day…”

Hazel doesn’t wait for relaxation to happen, she creates space for it. “I make time to knit every day, usually in the evening, after I’ve stopped working and after dinner.” That intentional boundary, crafting after work or other obligations, is powerful. Research consistently shows that creating a clear transition between work and rest helps reduce stress and improve overall well-being. According to studies in occupational health, even small, consistent rituals can signal to the brain that it’s safe to unwind. Hazel doesn’t just hope for calm, she schedules it.

A Room of Her Own

Hazel has taken things a step further, by designing an environment that supports her peace. “I set up a knitting room in the smallest of our three bedrooms. No animals allowed, since my kitties will try to steal the yarn! The door is always closed. I plop down on the couch, stretch out my legs, and knit. Often, I listen to an audiobook on my Kindle. Usually, I’ll bring a mug of decaffeinated or herbal tea in with me.” To me that sounds like an oasis I usually only find on a vacation! This helped me realize it’s something I too, can create for every day.

Not elaborate, not expensive, but intentional

Environmental psychology tells us that dedicated spaces for relaxation can significantly improve our ability to mentally “switch off.” Even simple cues - a closed door, a specific chair, a favorite drink - train the brain to associate that space with calm. Hazel has created what so many of us are missing, myself included, a boundary between the noise of the world and the quiet she needs.

Process Over Product

In a culture obsessed with productivity, Hazel offers a radically different perspective. She explains, “I’m not a project knitter. It normally doesn’t matter when I finish a project. Instead, I’m a process knitter. I just enjoy the feel of the needles in my hand. I love the feeling of the yarn. If a yarn is unpleasant to the touch, I won’t use it! The repetition of the stitches, the flow of a particular pattern, leave my mind free to float.”

There’s science behind this. Repetitive, rhythmic activities like knitting and crochet have been shown to induce a state similar to meditation. Studies published in journals like the British Journal of Occupational Therapy have found that knitting can reduce anxiety, lower heart rate, and even decrease symptoms of depression. What Hazel describes, a mind free to float, is what psychologists call a “flow state,” where the brain is both focused and relaxed at the same time. “Sometimes I don’t believe I think about anything. Sometimes ideas and plans come to me when I’m that relaxed.” In other words, stepping away from constant input doesn’t dull the mind, it restores it.

Crafting Through Crisis

Hazel’s practice didn’t just help her unwind, it carried her through one of the most difficult seasons of her life. “Some years ago, I came down with Bell’s Palsy. It paralyzed three-fourths of my face completely. I had difficulty eating and my speech was barely comprehensible. I couldn’t do anything. I’m not used to being helpless, and this was the most helpless I’d ever felt in my life.”

But Hazel’s kind heart spoke. “I wondered if perhaps I could knit.” What followed is a testament to the healing power of creating. “I dug through my patterns to see if there was something ultra-easy, and found a knitted blanket pattern created with circular needles.”

“The pattern said to take out all of your odds and ends of yarn and throw them into a bag you couldn’t see through, then knit with whichever yarn came out, no matter what the color was. I cast on over 300 stitches. I knitted on, with a wildly colored and cozy blanket forming around me.”

There’s something profoundly moving about this image, someone in the midst of physical and emotional limitation, still choosing to create. “The ability to actually create something when I felt so impaired helped me to feel better about myself and my ability to actually do something constructive during that miserable time.”

Modern research in art therapy supports exactly this. Creative expression can restore a sense of control, identity, and purpose, especially during illness or trauma. Hazel wasn’t just passing time. She was choosing to reclaim herself.

What I Learned from Hazel

Hazel’s routine isn’t complicated and that’s what makes it so powerful. When the world feels overwhelming, I try very hard to keep these five things in mind.

Create/craft daily, even for short period of time. Consistency matters more than duration. To me, ten minutes of intentional calm is better than none.

Create a dedicated space. It doesn’t have to be a whole room. A chair, a corner, a basket of supplies will suffice. It just needs to signal, “this is where I rest.” I personally appreciate having my “art” area, even when I can’t use it. Just passing through the area on my way to work, reminds me that “rest” is waiting for me.

Engage your senses. Soft yarn, warm tea and a favorite audiobook. Follow Hazel’s lead and let your environment support your nervous system.

Let go of productivity. You don’t need to finish anything. You don’t need to be efficient. As Hazel shows us, the process is the point.

Use your hands to quiet your mind. Repetitive motion, from activities like knitting, crocheting and stitching, can gently guide your brain out of stress mode.

Hazel’s story is both deeply personal and universal. In a world that constantly asks us to do more, know more, worry more… her practice is a quiet act of resistance. It says to the world, and the news cycle, “I will make space for peace anyway.”

At Comfort for Critters, we often talk about the comfort these blankets bring to shelter pets, but stories like Hazel’s remind us of something just as important: The act of creating them can comfort us, too. When I started Comfort for Critters, my goal was honestly pretty limited. I simply wanted to make some blankets and bring some comfort to a handful of pets at my local shelter. I instinctively knew that the overwhelming environment of a shelter could benefit from something soft and cuddly. I sensed that a handmade blanket could provide at least a small sense of safety to the pets I couldn’t adopt.

What I didn’t fully understand at the time was that the comfort wouldn’t stop with the animals, it would rebound to the very people working to comfort others. This realization hit me fully when I received a treasured note from a volunteer. This volunteer is now in her sixth year of making blankets to comfort shelter pets. Her words stopped me in my tracks, because they so perfectly captured something I’ve been seeing for years… and still find hard to fully put into words.

She wrote, “I wanted to thank you for creating Comfort for Critters. Being part of the Comfort for Critters team has helped me so much in finding meaning outside of my home and has helped me find a way to contribute to the world.” She shared that she’s currently on disability and unable to work. For many people, that kind of life shift can feel isolating. It can quietly take away not just routine, but identity and the sense of being part of something bigger than yourself.

So many of us want to give, we want to help, we want to matter. But life doesn’t always make that easy. Circumstances change and paths we expected to walk disappear altogether. However, sometimes another path opens, one we never could have predicted.

For this volunteer, that path came in the form of yarn, a hook, and the simple act of creating a blanket for a shelter animal she will never meet. She went on to write, “I love animals, and being able to help has really helped my self-esteem and has helped me find purpose in life.”

For many of us “purpose” is something we wrestle with, long for, and pursue through big, bold life decisions. But more often than not, it shows up quietly and in small acts which often go unnoticed. It shows up in something as simple, and as powerful, as making a blanket.

Over the years, I’ve heard versions of this sentiment again and again. Volunteers who began making blankets to help animals, soon found themselves healing from grief. People who picked up crochet hooks during times of illness or uncertainty, and discovered joy and peace in each stitch. Others who simply wanted to do something good, and ended up being welcomed into a new community of volunteers with a renewed sense of hope.

Truly, this was never part of the original plan. Comfort for Critters was created to comfort to shelter pets, and that remains at the heart of everything we do. But along the way, the act of giving comfort, began to comfort the giver.

Along the way, I also learned that you don’t have to know where something is going to begin. When I started Comfort for Critters, I didn’t have a roadmap for what it would become. As I’ve said more times than I can count, it all began with a simple pull at my heart and a tap on my shoulder. I simply sensed that this was something I needed to do.

If there’s something calling out to you, something you keep thinking about, something that tugs at you in a quiet but persistent way, I hope you’ll listen to it. Rest assured, you don’t need to have it all figured out (I’m still figuring things out every day). You don’t need to know the ending. You just need to take the first step.

One of our volunteers, Melissa M. from North Carolina, shared a story that has stayed with me for years now. It’s about a dog named Barry, a “fur nephew,” as she lovingly calls him, who was adopted from a rescue group into what should have been his happy ending. But as anyone who has worked in animal welfare knows, the transition from shelter to home isn’t always easy.

In Barry’s first few weeks with his new family, he struggled. While his pet parents were at work, he would pull blankets and sheets off their bed, leaving a trail of destruction behind him. It wasn’t mischief, but anxiety. The kind that lingers in animals who are still learning that they are safe, and that they are home, and that they are loved.

Melissa recognized what so many of us have come to understand - sometimes, comfort isn’t something you can explain, it’s something you can feel. This prompted her to pick up her crochet hook. She made Barry a small granny square blanket that was simple and handmade with care. When the blanket was given to Barry, something remarkable happened. Within just a few days, he stopped tearing apart the bedding. The chaos quieted, but the story doesn’t end there.

Over the next few months, Melissa made him a couple more blankets. Gradually, the deeper signs of separation anxiety began to fade as well. The nervous energy softened. The fear loosened its grip. Even years later, Barry still sleeps with one of those blankets every single night. His family describes him as “quite the character,” but also, and importantly, a “very happy beagle”.

It’s easy to underestimate something as simple as a blanket. After all, it’s just yarn, right? But those of us in this community know better. A blanket can carry scents, warmth, and familiarity. It can become a constant in a world that has been anything but stable for some pets. For animals coming out of shelters, everything is unfamiliar, loud, and uncertain. Providing a sense of security, in the form of a blanket, can make all the difference.

What Melissa created for Barry is the same kind of comfort our volunteers send into shelters every day. We may never meet the animals who receive our blankets. We may never hear their stories. But every once in a while, a story like Barry’s finds its way back to us. Reminding us why this work matters so deeply. Because sometimes, healing doesn’t come from grand gestures. Sometimes, it comes from a single, lovingly made blanket and the quiet message it carries.

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, two retired women sit down together with yarn, hooks, and a shared sense of compassion. Their hands are busy learning something new (making blankets for animal shelter pets), but their hearts are focused on the “little fellas” waiting in shelters for a family of their own.

Their first group of blankets was made especially for the Capital Area Humane Society in Lansing, Michigan. It mattered to them that these blankets would go to animals nearby, as they are often overwhelmed when they first arrive at a shelter. These pets experience new smells, sounds, faces, and more….all at once.

As they explained it to me, “We feel for the little fellas waiting to be adopted.” These ladies understood how hard those first days can be for shelter pets. They know the shelters do the best they can, but they also know that a blanket, as something soft, warm, and personal, can make a real difference. They talked about how much better it must feel for an animal to lie on a blanket instead of a cement floor! I couldn’t agree more.

Like so many of us who have loved animals, they’ve noticed that pets will curl up on just about any piece of fabric, if given the chance. That observation convinced them that these blankets must matter. “If a small piece of fabric can bring calm in a home, how much more important might it be in a shelter?” they wondered.

What makes their story especially meaningful is that the blankets aren’t only helping the pets, they are helping the people making them, too. In retirement, they found themselves wanting more than rest. They wanted purpose and to feel useful. They wanted to contribute, even in a quiet way, and crafting these blankets gave them exactly that.

As they put it, “We are retired but we still feel like we are contributing to society in some little way, while doing what we love to do.” That “little way” is anything but little. Each stitch is an act of empathy. Each finished blanket is a reminder to a scared animal that comfort exists, that kindness exists, that someone was thinking about them long before they were chosen.

Stories like theirs are a powerful reminder that volunteering doesn’t end when a career does. It simply changes shape. Sometimes it looks like yarn and hooks. Sometimes it looks like learning something new for the sake of pet you’ll never meet.

Stories like theirs are exactly why Comfort for Critters exists. Our mission has always been about more than blankets. It’s about recognizing that animals in shelters are deserving of comfort, especially in the moment they need it most. It’s also about providing a way for kind hearts to reach out to hurting hearts, and feel that sense of satisfaction that only comes from helping others.

These two women in Grand Rapids remind us that comfort heals in both directions. A blanket can steady a frightened animal, and the act of making it can restore purpose, joy, and belonging in the person who creates it. That shared healing is at the very core of Comfort for Critters. We strive to connect people and pets through simple, intentional acts of kindness that make the world a little gentler for everyone along the way.

In 2007, I was a middle-aged, overworked mom with two kids under ten, a job, and not much free time. But I did have a crochet hook, a love of animals, and one big idea that wouldn’t let go of me.

I had just adopted a cat named Anna from the DuPage County Animal Control shelter, close to my home. While there, I noticed how bare the kennels were, lacking a single soft item to provide a sense of comfort for the pets. That image stayed with me.

I knew I couldn’t adopt them all, but I could comfort them. I crocheted a small, colorful granny square blanket, made in the very pattern my mother taught me when I was a child, and I donated it to the shelter where I adopted Anna. That shelter became the first to join a brand new program I called “Comfort for Critters”.

At that point, the questions started. “You can’t possibly make a difference…” People didn’t mean to be unkind, but they were skeptical. “There are millions of shelter pets,” they’d say. “You’re making blankets? Just you? What good will that do?” It was a fair question, since it occurred to me as well.

I continued on, spreading the message that Comfort for Critters could be a program that would provide handmade blankets for homeless pets waiting in shelters. I was repeatedly explaining to people that while we couldn’t save every animal, we could at least offer them some comfort while they waited.

But it often felt like too much of an undertaking. Of course I didn’t have a warehouse or certainly a staff. It was just me, my crochet hook, and a belief that animals deserve love, especially if they waiting to find their forever home. That’s when I came across the story of The Star Thrower.

If you’re unfamiliar with the story, it goes like this: A man sees a boy throwing starfish into the sea. The tide had washed them ashore, and the sun is now rising, putting them in grave danger. The man tells the boy, “There are miles of beach and thousands of starfish, you can’t possibly make a difference.” The boy gently tosses another one into the surf and says, “I made a difference to that one.”

That story landed in my life like a thunderclap. It put into words the very tension I was feeling, and gave me permission to keep going. I decided to do what I could, even if it was just one pet at a time. That story became a cornerstone of Comfort for Critters. A quiet mantra I still repeat to myself when the need seems overwhelming.

Since that first granny square blanket, I’ve lost count of how many blankets I’ve personally made. Volunteers have joined me from all over the country and together we’ve donated hundreds of thousands of comfy blankets to shelters in all 50 states.

Often, the shelters write back. They send notes of thanks, sometimes with a photograph of a cat or dog snuggled up on their new blankie. But the messages that bring me to tears tell me more. They will tell me about how a particular blanket helped a particular animal.

Maybe it’s the anxious dog who finally laid down to sleep on a blanket, or a scared kitten who began to knead the blanket like it was their mother. Maybe it’s an older cat who found her forever home and got to take the blanket with her. These notes remind me that we are truly making a difference “to that one”.

I’ve come to believe that the world isn’t changed by grand gestures nearly as often as it’s changed by small, faithful ones. A handmade blanket. A moment of compassion. A decision not to give up.

That’s what the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam means to me—not fixing everything, but repairing something. Wedge your act of kindness into your already full life, however you can. Keep going, even when it feels like you’re throwing one starfish into a sea of need.

I believe that when you make a difference to one, you’ve done something sacred indeed. So, here’s my challenge to you. The world is hurting. Animals are waiting. It’s way too easy to feel like your effort is too small, your time too limited, your skills not enough.

But here’s what I’ve learned over 18 years of comforting critters - small kindnesses multiply. Please make the blanket, send the donation, volunteer for the hour you have. Say yes to the one thing you can do, even if you can’t do everything. Because there’s another starfish just ahead. And you, yes you, can make a difference to that one.

For over 18 years, I’ve been working in the animal sheltering space, sending our beautiful handmade blankets to shelters across the country. These creations aren’t just about warmth, they’re a message to each and every pet that they are not alone, and that they matter. It’s a tangible way they, and the shelters, can see that someone cares.

But not long ago, I was faced with a painful question from a volunteer. They asked, “Why are we donating to shelters that euthanize animals?” Another said flatly, “I don’t want my blanket going to a shelter that kills pets.” It wasn’t the first time I’d heard that, but it stung all the same.

There’s no doubt that the no-kill movement has done wonderful things. It’s helped lower euthanasia rates, promoted adoption, and has drawn attention to the value of every animal life. Of course, I support that goal with all my heart.

But here’s what people often miss: no-kill shelters don’t, and can’t, take in every animal. Many have limited space and very specific criteria. That means when they’re full, or when an animal is too sick, too old, or too scared, those animals can be turned away.

Where do they go? They go to the open-admission shelters. The ones who need to say yes, no matter what. The ones who take in the litters of kittens found in a cardboard box. The dogs dumped in the middle of the night. The injured, the abandoned, the forgotten. It breaks my heart to know that sometimes those shelters have to make the hardest call of all. They do this because they’re overwhelmed, underfunded, and often unfairly judged.

I remember one open-admission shelter in the Midwest that changed the way I thought about this issue forever. They had one full-time vet, one part-time tech, and a building that was falling apart. Yet the love those animals received was undeniable. Every dog had a blanket. Every cat had a name. Every volunteer knew the stories, the quirks, and the needs of each animal in their care.

When they reached out to Comfort for Critters, it wasn’t just for blankets, it was for hope. They told us that having a soft, handmade blanket to hand a new adopter was “the first time they felt like they had something beautiful to give, along with the pet.” That stuck with me.

Our blankets soften a kennel floor but also bring a message of support to shelter workers who may feel like they’re drowning. If you’re someone who believes in no-kill shelters, please keep believing. Keep fighting for more adoptions, more fosters, and more support. But please, don’t turn your back on shelters that still have to make hard choices. Don’t assume they don’t care. In my experience, they care deeply.

They are doing the work that few want to talk about. They need our support, our blankets, our funding and our understanding. They need a community that doesn’t abandon them for not being perfect.

At Comfort for Critters, we exist to promote the dignity of every shelter animal. That’s a big part of our mission. It means giving comfort to a pet, no matter how long an animal has, no matter what label the shelter wears. So yes, I will keep supporting shelters that aren’t no-kill by sending blankets, hope and love. To me compassion shouldn’t draw lines, and kindness should never ask for credentials.

I am always personally touched when I get to interact with Comfort for Critters volunteers. The concern over the perfect blanket size, the softest yarn to use, and ensuring a box has made it safely to me reveals the heart of the person. I’m always impressed. I’ve also heard from numerous volunteers that they pray for the pets, as they create the blankets, or offer a blessing over their creations once they are finished. Given the state of our world and country, I wonder if this is the perfect time for this idea.

The concept of praying for the pets as the blankets are created, and then blessing the blankets when finished, comes from the “prayer shawl” idea many churches embrace. I’ve seen the beautiful shawls created and have been part of the church service when they are blessed. It’s quite moving. I think both practices are worth considering.

The blankets we make for pets go beyond the physical comfort and warmth they provide. They’re a gesture of love that we hope the pets, the families, and the shelter workers all feel. Just like the prayer shawls, they are meant to bring peace to the recipients. More than anything, they are a tangible reminder that they are loved and not forgotten. They become special “blankies” that the pets get to take home, and the families often keep them for many years, even after the pet has passed away.

Marilynn, a friend of mine and long-time CFC volunteer, has told me how she pictures the pet who will receive her blanket as she chooses colors and the design. She’ll create a strikingly bright red blanket for a jet-black cat who might otherwise disappear into the back corner of the enclosure. So, praying for the pet can be as simple as holding them in your thoughts as you create your blanket.

Blessing the finished blankets can be another practice you choose to embrace. Whatever prayer you’d like to come up with will “work” just fine. I’m thankful for a God who clearly sees our intentions, even as we stumble over our words. If you’d like a few ideas to get started, try one of these:

• God, make this blanket something that will be warming and comforting to the pet who receives it. Help it provide a sense of security and well-being. As I’ve seen You do, cradle this pet, and all of Your creation, in a blanket of joy, peace, and love.

• Heavenly Father, use this blanket to create a warm and comforting environment for the shelter pet. I hope the pet will enjoy and find comfort in this creation, but I pray my simple handiwork does more. I hope the shelter workers find encouragement as they care for the pets. I hope those around the pet feel the love I put into its creation and will spread that love to others.

I believe that adding this extra touch of caring to our blankets will make a difference in a world that truly needs it. Beyond choosing the softest yarn or fleece and making them the perfect size, the emotional value added to each item is immeasurable. A huge note of thanks goes to the many volunteers who have been doing this “blessing of the blankets” for years. They, and I, know that every kind thought and every prayerful stitch has made a difference.

For one Comfort for Critters volunteer, every blanket is more than yarn and stitches. It’s a quiet act of gratitude, shaped by love for two rescue dogs who changed her life—and by a deep belief that comfort, in all its forms, has the power to heal.

Today, her dogs are confident, affectionate companions who fill her home with joy. But she has never forgotten the first days after their adoption. She remembers how scared they were, and how confused they seemed to be in a brand-new environment where nothing felt familiar.

“It took a couple weeks of real tender love and care,” she shares, “before they came out of their shells and started to show who they really were.” With patience and gentleness, her dogs slowly learned they were safe. In that safety, their personalities blossomed.

One of the small but meaningful comforts during that transition was the blankets they came with when they were adopted. Those blankets became a source of familiarity in a time of enormous change. Even now, her dogs seek out something soft wherever they rest.

“My dogs love their blankets and in fact won’t sit or lay anywhere without something soft to put their heads on,” she says. That simple truth says so much. Comfort matters. A soft place to rest is not a luxury. It is a way of telling a nervous heart, you are safe here.

That understanding is what drew her to Comfort for Critters. When she makes blankets for shelter pets, she is thinking about frightened dogs and cats waiting in kennels, surrounded by unfamiliar sounds and smells, unsure of what tomorrow will bring. She imagines how overwhelming that waiting can be, and how one handmade blanket can turn a cold space into something warmer and more hopeful.

She (as with many CFC volunteers) hopes every shelter pet can have a soft item to lay on and snuggle with. She believes those small comforts can help animals “feel more comfortable which hopefully will lead to them being less stressed while they wait for their forever home.” And when adoption day finally comes, she loves that these pets will carry their Comfort for Critters blanket with them, bringing a piece of comfort from the shelter into the next chapter of their lives.

She is also passionate about encouraging people to adopt, not shop. Her rescue dogs are living proof of the love, loyalty, and joy that shelter pets bring. “They’ve brought a ton of love into my life,” she says. Through Comfort for Critters, she is paying that love forward, one blanket, one animal, one family at a time.

She chose to support a local shelter because comforting animals in her own community makes the mission even more meaningful. These are not abstract stories. These are dogs and cats nearby, waiting for someone to see them, care for them, and offer them a soft place to land.

In a world that often feels divided, rushed, and unkind, her blankets are a gentle form of resistance. They are a reminder that comfort still matters. That small acts of care still ripple outward. That whether it’s a scared shelter pet or a hurting human heart, what we all need, sometimes desperately, is something soft, something familiar, and someone willing to say (through action), you are not alone.

As with most Ted Talks I listen to, I was enthralled. The recounting of an act of compassion, not for another human, but for a creature that could swallow a human whole, and likely not notice. As it was told by the main hero, marine researcher Michael Fishbach, it was a tale that could hardly have been believed, except of course for the video evidence.

Fishbach and his family stumbled upon what they imagined was a deceased Blue Whale, in the Sea of Cortez in 2009. Upon closer inspection, an act of bravery in and of itself, signs of life appeared. And what a tremendous life it was.

Blue Whales are the largest creature to have ever roamed the Earth. Larger, by a good measure, than even the largest dinosaur either us, or Hollywood, have ever imagined. Blue Whale babies, or calves, are born 23 feet in length and can weigh up to 8,000 pounds at birth. Being a mammal like us, they nurse from their mother, putting on 200 pounds a day, for up to six or seven months. Once fully grown they reach 100 feet in length (the size of a basketball court) and weigh 400,000 pounds. If that’s not impressive enough, their tongue alone weighs as much as an elephant (400 pounds) and their heart would be the size of your car.

In a demonstration of God’s sense of humor, these greatest of all creatures, consume only the smallest in response. Blue Whales are classified as Baleen whales, so they lunge through massive swarms of Krill (tiny, shrimplike crustaceans), sucking in the ocean, straining out the water, and leaving a feast of Krill to enjoy. During feeding season, no less than 4 tons of Krill a day will be needed to maintain a healthy whale!

To say they are magnificent creatures does not begin to do them justice, and their immense size is their least impressive quality. Not surprisingly, they are also the loudest animal on earth. Their vocalizations can surpass that of a jet engine, at 188 decibels. The alluring sound they make can travel well over 1,000 miles, even underwater. This amazing ability helps their navigation, as they migrate thousands of miles each year from their breeding grounds in warm, tropical waters to their feeding grounds in the polar regions.

I don’t honestly know how much of the soft side of whales Michael knew when he donned a snorkeling mask and entered the water, but enter he did. What he found was a whale struggling to breath, struggling to hang on a bit longer, struggling to free herself from massive fishing lines that were dragging her to her slow death. It was obvious she had been battling these lines for a while, and equally obvious she didn’t have much longer to fight.

With the combination of his family on the boat, and him in the water, they worked for over an hour to cut the lines that encircled her massive tail and pinned her fins securely, sadly, to her side. With small pocket knives they were able to cut and detangle, cut and detangle, cut and pull, cut and pull, until the whale was free. To watch the video that captures the rescue is to root joyously for the good guys, comforted by the fact that the ending has been revealed. Without that knowledge, I’m sure my heart would not have allowed me to watch. I’m glad I did watch though, since I was treated to a post-ending surprise, that even I didn’t expect.

Early in the Ted Talk, Fischbach shares, “never has there been any record of a Blue Whale harming a human being,” though it would be easy to do given their massive size and daily interaction with boats in their habitats. The magnificence of their size, coupled with the gentleness of their spirit, puts them squarely in the crosshairs of a world that sees their value only in what they bring to the marketplace. That attitude is clearly the world’s loss.

While they have swam in every ocean, except the Arctic, for tens of millions of years, the future remains uncertain for these whales. They were hunted to near extinction in the 20^th century, but through some protections provided by international law, they are now considered “only” Endangered. Estimates put their population at 10,000 to 25,000 currently making their home in the Earth’s oceans. I like to imagine they all will raise their 188-decibel voice in protest as they are hunted, tangled, and run down. I’m a dreamer, so I also like to imagine we will listen.

Michael and his team named the whale they saved Valentina. Once she was freed from the massive amount of netting, she surprised everyone by circling their boat for almost an hour, repeatedly surfacing, breaching, and slapping her tail on the water. I would never have guessed this would be Valentina’s response. I would not have blamed her, and likely encouraged her, to bolt away from these humans and yet another boat. To watch Valentina’s reaction, is to see a physical manifestation of gratefulness and joy. It’s not hard to believe her heart is the size of a Volkswagen, I hope humankind can enlarge their collective hearts, before it’s too late.

My simplest answer should be, “Because these animals deserve them.” Every Comfort for Critters volunteer would say the same. But the writer in me resists short answers when there’s a deeper truth asking to be told.

The real discomfort, I think, isn’t about blankets at all. It’s about our culture’s fixation on new, perfect and blemish-free. The things I cherish most in this life are softened by use, marked by time, and a little rough around the edges.

There is a Japanese philosophy called Wabi-sabi, and it names what my heart has always known: beauty lives in the imperfect, the worn, the used. Perfection is sterile. It tells no stories. Scars, on the other hand, are proof that something mattered enough to be lived with, loved hard, and held onto.

Wabi-sabi isn’t just an aesthetic; it’s a way of seeing the world. It honors the handmade over the mass-produced, the human over the flawless. An assembly line can create a perfect blanket in seconds. But a blanket with uneven stitches, one that betrays the hands of a beginner, has a pulse. It carries intention and love, which no machine can replicate.

I see Wabi-sabi every day in one of my most treasured possessions: a hairbrush nearly as old as I am. My mother used it to brush my waist-long hair when I was a child. It’s lost a third of its bristles, and I clean it carefully, hoping it will survive just a little longer. By any modern standard, it’s past its prime. To me, it is flawless.

My books tell the same story. I instinctively side-eye anyone who calls themselves “a reader” yet owns only pristine volumes. Mine are dog-eared, cracked-spined, and occasionally drooled on. Their pages hold crumbs, coffee stains, and the evidence of being read repeatedly. My most precious book is my father’s Bible, covered in notes, arrows, underlines, questions. The binding is failing, the cover nearly gone, and the scent of age rises from its pages. It was alive in his hands. Its mess is its holiness.

And so it is with our blankets. Yes, they will fray and likely get stained. They will be dragged down hallways, slept on, clawed, and loved into something unrecognizable from their original state. And that is exactly the point. Those are the blankets my dog claims as treasure. Those are the blankets my cats knead into comfort. They are no different from my sons’ favorite t-shirts—softened not by time alone, but by devotion.

A worn blanket tells the truth. It says, I was chosen. It wears its holes and stains not as flaws, but as earned badges of belonging.

If we want a better world, for animals, for people, for ourselves, we must stop worshipping perfection. We must learn to honor what is used, what is scarred, what has been trusted enough to be worn down. The imperfect blanket is not a failure. It is Wabi-sabi.
