Summer has come early here, with temps already into the 100s. Thank god for coconut coffee! Otherwise, I’d be as grumpy as this cat.

It’s also time to start thinking about summer trends. Given the current geopolitical situation, the rising price of airline fuel and the cost of living, more Americans will be staying close to home this summer rather than jaunting off to places like Europe.

3 Topics to Focus On

1. Brainstorm new hotel, restaurant and bar trends with a summer angle (think tied to current events like space travel or a seasonal ingredient growing in popularity like pandan).

2. Unique road trips (skip Route 66, it’s already oversaturated) and focus on other notable road trips with clickable headlines. Fake example: This stunning 300-mile road trip through Montana is like a mini-safari.

3. Think less SEO listicle and more unique, people-driven stories. AI and Google are rendering stories like 5 best things to do in Cape Cod a bi’ a bit obsolete. So instead, focus ideas on more creative and innovative angles that AI wouldn’t have easy answers for. Basically, stay ahead of the trends!!

For me, this year has brought many big changes, personal and professional.

I made the super exciting/stressful decision to buy a house abroad and turn it into an Airbnb (coming soon) and part-time home. I also added Formula 1 to my writing niches, one of the most fun professional decisions I’ve ever made, which led to seeing some incredible races live.

But, in the spirit of honesty, it hasn’t been my most lucrative year for writing. Perhaps a sign of the AI-related times and with many editorial teams let go and budgets slashed, it felt like the most difficult year for freelancers since the pandemic. To see what I mean, here is my annual year-in-review.

I’ve been spending months in the Faroe Islands since first visiting on assignment in 2018. After falling for this special country I’ve been looking for a home here for the past three years. It’s been a long process, and buying a home in a foreign country is definitely not as easy as it looks in Under the Tuscan Sun.

But I’m so excited to make this Faroese home from the 1910s into a very special place. Renovations are currently happening!! I’ll be spending several months a year here with my partner, and then renting it out on Airbnb the rest of the year.

Trend Pitch MUSTS!

Editors and pubs always seem to be interested in these kinds of stories, and I’m a sucker for a good trend story, so please, send your ideas over!

BUT for me to pitch a trend story, they always need to have a few key things:

• Numbers data or evidence that this is, in fact, a growing trend (the most important thing!)

• Multiple examples of this trend around the world, or wherever the trend is happening (for example, the US or Europe)

• A “why now” angle, why is this important now or what is the reason behind this new trend

These three things are vital for me to write a pitch for a trend story, so double-check your pitch includes all these things before hitting send!
