Why We Set the Lights

There is a wonderful simplicity to candle magic.

You need a candle.

You need fire.

You need a reason.

Technically, that can be enough.

People have been lighting candles with prayers and petitions for longer than any of us can trace. A flame in the darkness is one of those symbols humanity seems to understand instinctively.

See me.

Hear me.

Help me.

Bring this.

Take this away.

Protect this person.

Open this road.

There is power in that.

But there is also a difference between lighting a candle and setting a light.

And since setting lights is a significant part of what we do at Crossroads Occult, I thought we’d talk about it this week.

What Does “Setting a Light” Mean?

In conjure and Hoodoo traditions, candle work is often referred to as setting lights.

The candle isn’t merely decorative, nor is it a birthday-candle wish where we think very hard about something we want and hope the Universe was paying attention.

It is work.

The candle is selected for a purpose.

It may be dressed with oils or herbs appropriate to that purpose. A petition may be written. Prayer, scripture, spoken intention, spirit work, or other components may accompany it depending upon the practitioner and tradition.

Then the candle is burned and carefully observed.

The light has been given a job.

That’s an important distinction.

A Candle Is a Tool

I sometimes think modern magical culture puts so much emphasis on having the right stuff that we forget what the stuff is for.

A green candle doesn’t create money because green wax possesses an irresistible attraction to twenty-dollar bills.

A red candle doesn’t make somebody fall in love.

A black candle doesn’t automatically banish your dreadful coworker to a distant continent.

Pity, really.

Color, herbs, oils, incense, petitions, symbols, timing, and other correspondences help us construct a magical language around the work.

They support and direct intention.

They help tell the story of what we’re asking the work to accomplish.

The practitioner supplies the other part.

That’s why two people can buy exactly the same candle and perform very different work with it.

The magic isn’t hiding inside the wax waiting to be activated.

The candle is where we give the magic somewhere to happen. We put the magic in the candle.

Dressing the Work

This is where things get fun.

Suppose I’m preparing a candle for prosperity.

I might choose a candle appropriate to drawing and abundance. Then I can select an oil formulated for prosperity, herbs traditionally associated with money and good fortune, and incense that reinforces the same intention. I use our handcrafted loose incenses and oils to dress the candles we burn for or send to clients.

Sometimes, I write a petition beneath it.

Perhaps I surround it with corresponding items.

Perhaps I include coins.

Another practitioner may construct the work differently.

That’s one of the beautiful things about magical practice. Over time, we develop relationships with particular tools, ingredients, spirits, prayers, symbols, and methods.

We learn what speaks fluently in our own magical vocabulary.

Develop your craft.

When You Hire Me to Set a Light

You’re not paying me to strike a match.

You’re hiring me to construct and perform magical work around your intention.

I consider what you’re trying to accomplish and choose the work accordingly. The candle is prepared and dressed for its purpose, the appropriate magical components are incorporated, and the light is tended as it burns.

Then I pay attention.

Candle work can be wonderfully expressive.

The flame, wax, soot, residue, burn pattern, and other behaviors sometimes give us useful information about how the work progressed.

That’s why many of my candle services include a report afterward.

I want you to know what happened.

Did the work burn cleanly?

Was there resistance?

Did something unusual occur?

What remained when the candle finished?

Those observations don’t constitute an infallible supernatural telegram announcing exactly what will happen next Tuesday at 3:17 p.m.

They are part of reading the work.

And after more than four decades of magical practice, I’ve watched an awful lot of candles burn.

Do You Need a Candle Right Now?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

I’m not going to tell you that everybody reading this newsletter desperately needs magical intervention this week.

Sometimes life is behaving itself.

Enjoy that.

But if something in your life does need attention, ask what you’re actually trying to accomplish.

Do you need to draw something?

Remove something?

Protect something?

Heal something?

Reconcile something?

Open a road?

Increase prosperity?

Strengthen work already underway?

Once you know the job, you can decide whether you want to do the work yourself or have someone do it for you.

One of the questions I often hear is some variation of: “What spell should I do?” My irritating practitioner answer is usually: “What exactly are you trying to accomplish?”

Because magic isn’t one thing. You wouldn’t walk into a hardware store and announce, “I need a tool.” Well...you could. But somebody is eventually going to ask whether you’re hanging a picture, unclogging a toilet, or demolishing a wall.

Magic works much the same way.

It’s surprising how often people come to me wanting magic to “fix” whatever problem they have without having explored what exactly they want to have happen. I will receive an email that spends several paragraphs describing what is happening with them, but they have no destination in mind. They just want their life fixed.

Magic needs a destination. It needs to know what you want it to do.

Sometimes we need to draw something toward us. Sometimes we need to remove something standing in our way. Sometimes nothing needs to be drawn or banished—we simply need to strengthen something already underway.

Sometimes the first magical thing we need is enough clarity to figure out what the hell is actually going on.

So let’s raid the magical cabinet together.

“I Need Something to Come to Me”

This is drawing work, attraction, manifestation: Money. Customers. Employment. Love. Friendship. Opportunity. Luck. A buyer for the house. The right apartment. The right connection.

Drawing magic is about creating attraction and encouraging movement toward you.

This is where corresponding candles, oils, herbs, incense, petitions, charms, rituals, and traditional attraction work can shine.

The important part is specificity.

“I want my life to get better” is certainly understandable, but it’s awfully difficult to give that job to a candle. The candle might look at your life and have no clue where to start because there is so much that needs to be managed. Use triage. Decide what needs help first and work from there.

I need additional income.

I want qualified customers to find my business.

I want to attract a healthy romantic relationship.

I need the right employment opportunity.

Now we have something to work with.

“Something Is in My Way”

This is a very different problem.

Maybe you’ve been trying to move forward and continually encounter obstruction. Maybe the atmosphere around you feels heavy. Maybe an unhealthy connection keeps pulling you backward. Maybe you’re dealing with gossip, hostility, unwanted attention, crossed conditions, or circumstances that simply need to go.

That’s when I start looking at clearing, uncrossing, cleansing, reversing, banishing, protection, road-opening, or obstacle-removing work.

Those aren’t interchangeable, either.

Cleansing removes accumulated spiritual debris.

Protection helps establish boundaries against unwanted influence.

Reversing work turns harmful energy or circumstances away.

Banishing removes.

Road-opening addresses obstruction and helps create movement.

That’s why I don’t recommend grabbing whatever black candle happens to be handy and shouting, “BEGONE!” at it. Although I’ll admit there are days…

Maybe your original magical work appears to be gaining traction and you simply want to feed it.

And sometimes we’re so emotionally tangled up in what’s happening that we can’t even see the situation clearly anymore.

That’s when divination can be more useful than immediately reaching for spell supplies.

Tarot isn’t just for asking, “What’s going to happen?”

Some of the most useful questions are:

What am I not seeing?

Where is the resistance coming from?

What can I influence?

What should I leave alone?

What action gives me the best chance of changing this situation?

Is magical intervention appropriate here?

A reading can sometimes save you considerable time, money, and energy by helping you understand the problem before you start trying to magically solve it.

You don’t always need another candle. Sometimes you need information.

Crossroads Occult Store

There is a peculiar thing people sometimes do after planting a seed.

They dig it up to see if it’s growing.

Not literally, usually. Most of us understand that if we plant a tomato seed on Tuesday, digging through the dirt on Thursday to check its progress is probably not an effective gardening technique.

Magic, however?

Oh, we’ll dig that sucker up six times before lunch.

We light the candle. We speak the petition.

We dress the work. We pray over it.

We send it out into the world with every bit of focus, emotion, skill, and power we can muster.

And then...

Did it work? I wonder if it’s working.

Maybe I should pull some cards.

Maybe I should light another candle.

Maybe I should do another spell.

Maybe I didn’t use enough oil.

Maybe I used too much oil.

Maybe Mercury looked at me funny.

And before the magical equivalent of that poor little seed has even had time to crack its shell, we’ve dug the entire garden up looking for evidence.

There Comes a Point When You Have to Trust the Work

Magic requires participation. I don’t subscribe to the idea that we can light a green candle, sit on the sofa, and expect the Universe to slide a bag containing $10,000 underneath the front door.

If I’m doing work for employment, I’m also submitting applications. If I’m doing prosperity work, I’m also looking for opportunities. If I’m doing healing work, I’m also taking the practical steps available to me.

The magical and mundane work together. As above, so below.

But there is a difference between supporting your magic with action and continually poking at your magic because you’re afraid nothing is happening.

One is participation. The other is anxiety wearing a witch hat.

The Waxing Moon Understands This

We have just come through the dark of the New Moon, and now the first sliver of light is returning.

This is one of my favorite lessons of the lunar cycle: The Moon doesn’t go from dark to full overnight.

First there is the tiniest crescent. Then a little more. Then more.

Night after night, light accumulates. That’s a beautiful model for drawing work.

Prosperity. Opportunity. Love. Confidence. Creativity. Healing. Success.

We establish the intention. We feed it. We take appropriate action. And then we allow it to grow.

You don’t have to demand a harvest from something that has only just sprouted.

Feed It. Don’t Smother It.

There are ways to support ongoing magical work without starting over every three days.

You can burn incense appropriate to your intention.

You can dress and burn a small candle periodically to feed the work.

You can pray.

You can refresh an altar.

You can carry a mojo or charm associated with your goal.

You can use a Booster Candle when work needs additional strength and momentum.

You can keep taking practical action in the mundane world.

What you don’t necessarily need to do is completely reinvent the spell because nothing dramatic happened in 48 hours.

Some magic moves like lightning. Some magic moves like water wearing away stone. And some magic moves underground for a while before you see anything at all.

What feeds a spell the best and make it fat, happy, and successful? Faith. I saw a church sign once that stuck with me and is the impetus for this post: “Don’t dig up in doubt what you planted in faith.” Yeah…that.

The First Harvest

August carries another reminder of this.

We’re moving through the beginning of harvest season.

The harvest is wonderful—but the harvest isn’t actually where abundance begins.

It begins months earlier.

Someone prepares the soil. Someone plants. Someone waters. Someone weeds.

Someone protects tender plants from things that would happily eat them.

Someone keeps showing up when there is still absolutely nothing to harvest.

Then comes the basket. We tend to celebrate the basket.

Magic asks us to respect everything that happened before it.

So this week, take a look at the things you’re trying to grow in your own life.

Where are you seeing the first tiny signs of progress? What needs feeding? What needs practical attention? And perhaps most importantly:

What have you already planted that you need to stop digging up?

Give Your Work What It Needs

There is something wonderfully primal about incense.

Long before we had pretty glass prayer candles, printed Tarot decks, commercially bottled magical oils, or witchy shops filled with every conceivable tool, our ancestors had fire.

They had plants.

They had resins.

And they had smoke.

Across cultures and centuries, people discovered that when certain plants were placed upon fire, something happened that felt like more than combustion. Fragrance filled the room. Smoke curled upward. The atmosphere changed.

And humans being humans, we immediately started talking to the Gods through it.

We fumigated sacred spaces. We cleansed homes. We honored the dead. We carried prayers upward. We called spirits closer and drove unwanted things away.

Thousands of years later, we’re still doing it.

Maybe our ancestors were onto something.

The Magic of Smoke

I think incense sometimes gets treated as the background music of magical practice.

Light the candles. Arrange the altar. Put out the offerings. Burn a little incense because that’s what witches do.

But incense can be the spell.

In folk magic and conjure traditions especially, the plants themselves matter. What are you burning? What does that plant do? What are you asking it to accomplish?

You aren’t just making the room smell nice. As my friend, Hexeba, says, “This ain’t aromatherapy, Kid.”

You’re putting something into the air.

That distinction matters.

When I burn incense for magical work, I want its purpose aligned with mine.

If I’m cleansing, I want cleansing plants.

If I’m drawing prosperity, I want herbs traditionally associated with abundance and good fortune.

If I’m creating sacred space, I want the smoke to help establish that threshold between ordinary time and ritual time.

And if I’m trying to get something—or somebody—the hell out of my energetic space?

Well, I want the plants to fully understand the assignment.

What Are You Sending Into the Air?

Here’s a little magical practice for this week.

Before you light your next incense, hold it for a moment.

Don’t light it automatically.

Ask yourself:

What do I want this smoke to carry?

Maybe it’s a prayer.

Maybe it’s gratitude.

Maybe it’s a request for prosperity.

Maybe you’re cleansing yesterday out of the house.

Maybe you’re preparing for divination and asking the mundane world to quiet down for a while.

Maybe you’re sending a very firm spiritual eviction notice.

Whatever it is, name it.

Then light your charcoal, add your incense, and watch the smoke rise.

Magic does not always require an elaborate ritual.

Sometimes it begins with simply remembering that the little things we do are the ritual.

The Dark Moon Is Coming

We’re also moving toward the New Moon on August 12, which means our next New Moon Hearth Circle is almost here.

I love the days leading toward the New Moon because they have their own peculiar kind of magic.

The Moon appears to disappear.

The night grows darker.

Things become quiet.

But nothing has actually stopped.

The next cycle is already forming where we cannot yet see it.

That makes these final days before the New Moon wonderful for clearing, cleansing, finishing, releasing, and deciding what we do—and do not—want to carry into the next lunar cycle.

Then, on August 12, we gather around the Hearth again.

The New Moon Hearth Circle isn’t about cramming more information into your head or giving you another spiritual assignment to complete.

It is an opportunity to deliberately cross the threshold from one lunar cycle into another through cleansing, reflection, divination, ritual, and intention.

CROSSROADS OCCULT

There are seasons in life when it feels as though every step requires extra effort. Conversations become tangled. Plans stall. Progress slows. We find ourselves wondering if we’re pushing against an invisible current.

• The Ritual: To honor this central spirit, light a candle (our Home Blessing candle is great for this) in a color that feels resonant to you and burn a small amount of incense in this “heart” space to offer a blessing to the building itself. (Of our stick incense, Witches’ Brew and 5 Blessings are great choices for this. Of our loose incense, Sacred Space is a wonderful choice).

• The Intent: Speak to the home. Thank it for its protection and for providing a space where your magic can flourish.

Feeding the Thresholds

If the heart is the soul of the home, the thresholds are its “mouth.” This is where energy enters and exits and you regularly need to brush your house’s “teeth.”

Crossroads Occult Store

Two weeks ago, I will admit that I gave into ego. A friend of mine suggested that my prices for card readings were too low and not in keeping with the current market. I reflected on the fact that we have not raised any of our prices on the website since 2018 and wondered if I might be devaluing what I do. Because I do that sometimes.

I am not given to fits of ego as a rule, but now and then, it feels nice to indulge. After conferring with another friend whose opinion I trust, I raised the prices on my readings.

A week or so later, another friend approached me rather hesitantly and suggested that maybe this was not the best time to raise prices when people are struggling to such a degree. I deeply appreciated her candor and willingness to broach what could have been a difficult conversation.

Within a day or so after that, I had some traumatic experiences to work through. Not anything untoward. Just that whole “getting old” and “being human” thing that sometimes gets in the way, so while I was healing from that, I considered the valuable input I received from everyone. These were all people I admired and respected and as I reflected on what they’d said, I realized that none of them were wrong.

I am good at reading cards and have done it for over forty years. I wrote a pretty good book on the subject. That experience has value. The other side is that Crossroads has always prided itself on providing quality magical goods and services at affordable prices. We do not want to appeal to maybe only 10% of our client base who can afford the higher prices. We want to help the people who are like us: regular people leading regular lives who need an energetic boost sometimes.

I made the critical mistake of thinking like a businessperson instead of thinking like a healer. It seemed right, but it felt wrong.

So here we are, two weeks later, and I am dropping the prices to make them more affordable. I am keeping some of the changes I made. The newly introduced readings will stay around because they are solid offerings. They will just cost less. The choice of a “video add-on” option for the mid-ranged reading is still there, so if you want to pay a $10 upgrade fee, you can have a recorded video reading instead of an emailed reading. It is the same reading either way and depends on whether you want to read the reading or hear the reading.

In all transparency, I am a much better writer now than I was when I first wrote this book in 2014. I keep intending to rewrite it and bring it up to date, correct any mistakes, and reframe some of the ideas based on things I’ve learned in the interim. It just hasn’t happened, but there is still good information in here and I hope you will benefit from it.

All of the other prices on crossroadsoccult.net are the same as they were in 2018 except for our prices for mail ordered prayer candles. We recently had to raise those prices by $3.00 each because shipping (included in the price for all of our mail order products) has gone up eight times since 2018 and is now 67-89% more expensive (depending on the package size) than it was then. Other than that, our prices, which were competitive even in 2018, are a wayback machine for you… exactly as they were then.

I’m sorry the economy sucks. We are ourselves trying hard to help our adult kids navigate this mess. All of you deserve better than this. I’m tired. I’m sure you’re tired. The best we can do is keep walking each other home. Life is still beautiful. Good things still happen. We just have to lean into the energy of that rather than immersing in despair.
